Puerto de la Cruz Beaches

Puerto de la Cruz Beaches

Playa Jardín (Garden beach)

Location: Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of the island

Brief description: Dark coloured sand stretching as far as the eye can see. Lovely sub-tropical gardens back onto the beach, hence the name.

Services nearby: Loads of places to grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink, absolutely loads!

Good for: Easy on the eye, partly due to its creator Lanzarote-born artist César Manrique.

What we like: The lovely palms that line the beach, the ‘sophisticated’ feel to the place and the amazing view of the sea; immerse yourself in the Atlantic and look up at a volcano….pretty amazing! Breakwater protects the swimming area.

What we don’t like: A beach like this is bound to be popular, go early to grab a sun bed.

Driving directions: Take the TF-1 northbound towards Santa Cruz, exit the TF-1 for the TF-5 towards Puerto de la Cruz (a good tip here is to follow signs for Loro Parque) Once you’re in this area, Playa Jardín is signposted.

Playa Bollullo

Location: In the north of the island, in the Orotava Valley region.

Brief description: Gorgeous dark-coloured sand at the bottom of steep cliffs. Frothy waves hit the shore and spill on to the shore.

Services nearby: Just the one cool restaurant right on the beach, which gives this place a good edge in our opinion!

Good for: Getting away from it all, especially the tourists, lounging around with nothing much to do.

What we like: Large expanse of sand, plenty of space to spread out. Blissful isolation.

What we don’t like: The trek just to get to isolated Playa Bollullo is pretty long and a little shaky in places; make sure you travel light.

Driving directions: Head towards Icod de los Vinos. (If you’re coming from the south take the TF-I north, then get onto the TF-5. The beach is signposted.

Playa San Marcos (Beach of Saint Mark)

Location: North coast, close to Icod de los Vinos.

Brief description: More than 500 metres of dark coloured sand fringed by rocks, beach runs just below a lovely promenade, clean calm water.

Services nearby: Good restaurants, typical Canarian dishes and fresh fish and seafood, bars and shops, on-street parking and car park.

Good for: People who don’t like their beaches too crowded and un-manicured.

What we like: No facilities or sun beds, we think this is actually a good thing, makes it feel ‘real’. Authentic Canarian ambience.

What we don’t like: Can a little cloudy in this part of the island.

Driving directions:

Lago Martiánez/Playa Martiánez

Location: Calle de las Lonjas, Puerto de la Cruz

Brief description: Incredible outdoor water park alongside the beach with huge saltwater pool, lakes, waterfalls, islands, bars, restaurants. ..the works!

Good for: A cheap day out for all the family. Fun guaranteed.

Services nearby: Everything you need is on this complex, even more stuff nearby.

What we like: The beach experience is next to the outdoor water park.

What we don’t like: The sea here is a little unpredictable.

Driving directions: From the TF-312, Lago Martiánez and the beach next door are both signposted.

Puerto de la Cruz Beaches – Martiánez

Location: At the eastern edge of town, beyond the Lago Martiánez swimming pools.

Brief description: Sweeping, volcanic sand bay with stunning views over La Orotava Valley – favoured by surfers.

Services nearby: Alongside promenade with its shops and restaurants and in front of Netto supermarket.

Good for: Losing the crowds, chilling out and watching the surfers falling off more often than standing up.

What we like: In easier walking distance from town than the main Playa Jardín, and the lack of sunbed hire deters most visitors.

What we don’t like: Swimming is only for the brave and the foolhardy.

Driving directions: Take exit 32 off the TF5 motorway and stay on the TF31 which ends at the start of the beach. Parking in CC Martiánez or alongside the beach if you’re lucky.

Puerto de la Cruz Beaches – Harbour

Location: On the harbour, alongside Plaza del Charco in the centre of town.

Brief description: Small, sheltered, volcanic, pebble beach with fishing boats pulled up to the wall at one side. The harbour walls are favoured by locals for sunbathing and jumping into the harbour.

Services nearby: Alongside harbour side guachinches, shops, bars, restaurants, children’s play area, public toilets and taxi rank.

Good for: People-watching, swimming in the sheltered waters of the harbour and enjoying the comings and goings of this bustling heart of the town.

What we like: Small, unpretentious beach frequented by locals and, every midsummer morning, by goats.

What we don’t like: Pebbles make for uncomfortable sunbathing, and wearing swimwear in the middle of town feels distinctly odd.

Driving directions: Take exit 36 off the TF5 motorway and follow signs for Town Centre. Park in large, free car park behind harbour or use pay car park alongside Plaza Europa and walk down hill to harbour.

Best destination for you in Tenerife? + holiday guide

Table of Contents

Beaches

How is the beach in Puerto de la Cruz?  Well, there are more than just one.  On one side, you will find the largest beach, the Playa del Castillo, a black sand touristy beach.  On the other side, you will find the Playa Martianez, closer to town but otherwise pretty similar.

The Playa Martianez has some higher waves and often also some more wind and therefore is pretty popular with surfers.  Most often, the one you will go to will be decided by your hotel’s location as they are pretty far from each other. There are many different swimming locations in Puerto de la Cruz, but these are pebble beaches or rocky structures to swim from.

Hotels

There are many great hotels in this area. The only thing you need to watch out for is the location, some are very hard to get to on foot, and it may take a lot of stairs or uphill walking.  In a quick summary:

  • For a family holiday, the h20 Tenerife Playa is a great choice.
  • For luxurious holidays the hotel Botanico.
  • On a budget the Casablanca apartments.

Restaurants and bars

Puerto de la Cruz has an extensive selection of restaurants.  The great thing I find here is that Puerto de la Cruz is also a real town, so not everything is aimed at tourists.  Many of the restaurants offer authentic Spanish traditional dishes and tapas. My advice would be to go where the local population eats as they most likely know where it is best.  Prices are pretty fair in most places, and all the meals I had were well prepared and served.

If you are unsure if Puerto de la Cruz is right for you, look at my where to stay in Tenerife guide covering all the different holiday destinations.

Nightlife

Puerto de la Cruz has a pretty active nightlife, especially in the peak season.  A lot of it is aimed at an older generation who like to come here to do some dancing and drink cocktails, but there are also some clubs for those younger.  Keep in mind that these might only be open on the weekends or be closed for some weeks outside of the school and university holidays. However, the dancing for the older generation is an all year round thing with many live musicians playing to this audience.

How to get to Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is 27 km away from the Tenerife North Airport:

  • Public transport: 5 euro
  • Shuttle bus: Not available if you don’t have a packaged holiday
  • Taxi: 35 euro

Puerto de la Cruz is 88 km away from the Tenerife South Airport:

  • Public transport: 14 euro
  • Shuttle bus: 18 euro
  • Taxi: 104 euro

Have a look here for some essential things you need to know about buses, shuttles and taxis at the Tenerife airports. There you can also find the companies I use when travelling in Tenerife.

There are plenty of shops spread through the resort but not a big shopping centre or shopping street like in some of the other more touristy holiday destinations in Tenerife.  One quick word of advice would be to stay away from some of the more tacky electronics stores here.  They seem to be selling cheap electronics, but the internet is full of stories from tourists getting ripped off when buying here or ending up with fake brands. If you want to do some intense shopping, the bus can easily take you to Santa Cruz, the capital with many shopping streets and centres.

Things to do near Puerto de la Cruz

When staying in Puerto de la Cruz, the main tourist attraction here is the Loro Parque, a great zoo with shows here in the area.  There are even little yellow trains going around from the zoo that can take you there for free.  This zoo is often visited by people from the other side of the island, about 60 km away, so if you are staying so close by, you should go and look.

If you are looking for something free to do in the resort, Taoro Park is a beautiful park with loads of flowers, waterfalls and nature just behind most of the hotels.  I would advise having a quick look here as well.

Here you can find a complete list of things I advise you to see and do in Tenerife.

MINI-GUIDE – Places to swim

MINI-GUIDE

Lago Martiánez

Bathe in contemporary art

“El Lago”, a place that the locals are very proud of, is one of the most admired examples of coastal landscape transformation for leisure in the world; A museum of contemporary outdoor art, built with basalt rock, emerald waters, gardens and sculptures, with imposing views of Mount Teide in the backdrop.

The Costa Martiánez tourist complex was designed by the painter, sculptor and designer César Manrique – World Ecology and Tourism Award Winner 1978 – using elements of traditional Canarian architecture and endemic flora. Within the enclosure are six of its sculptures: Los Alisios, La Jibia, Barlovento, Raíces al Viento, a tribute to William Reich and Monumento al mar. The large lake has about 27,000 cubic metres of sea water and is surrounded by four swimming pools for adults and three children’s pools. In its interior there are 5 islands with bars, restaurants, steak house and rooms of celebrations and gatherings.

The first swimming pools were inaugurated in 1971, on a beach and natural pools in Llanos de Martiánez, and was the place where the first tourists bathed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Years later, in 1977, its final phase was completed and in 2005 it was declared a place of Cultural Interest and categorised as an historical garden.

On the stretch of the promenade that leads up to San Telmo Chapel you will come across three gates, inspired by the one that guards the chapel, that control the access to the pools.

This piece of art is a lively place, which hosts concerts and all kinds of events throughout the year. Find out if there´s anything going on during your stay.

Address: Avenida de Colón, nº 1

Telephone: 922 378 400 ext. 3902

Opening hours: 10am-5pm everyday with the option of stay in the complex up until 6pm.

Price: General rate € 5.5

Playa Martiánez

Surf on the cliff´s edge

In the heart of the tourist area, at the entrance to the city, on the cliffside, you will be welcomed by black sand and pebbled. This is surfers’ paradise and the local surfers favourite place to ride the waves. It is also a habitual landing place for paragliders.

Not only do the cliffs and hillside have an enormous ethnographic value, due to archaeological remains of a large Guanche necropolis being found in the area, but it also boasts enormous geological and ecological value.

Fishing Port

The heart of the city

It is the place where you can observe the most authentic Puerto de la Cruz: fishing boats, youngsters diving into the sea, stalls selling fresh fish, terraces that smell of squid. It is the Heart of the city, close to Plaza del Charco; A place where ships loaded with bananas would start their journey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the doorway of the arrival of new ideas of the Enlightenment; Today a place of meeting and celebration of traditions.

Puerto de la Cruz was during the 18th century, it was one of the most dynamic ports in the archipelago and, along with Santa Cruz´ port, the most important in Tenerife. The commercial activity of the “new quay” and the other port Penitente, disappeared in the summer of 1936, coinciding with the Spanish civil war and the death of the last founder of the fruit and shipping company Yeoward Brothers.

Nowadays the pier is a calmer place, a place to have a swim and berth for small fishing boats. The fishermen continue to go out every morning to fish in their small artisanal fishing boats, bringing fresh fish, which is sold on small counters on the pier.

Look out for: The only public water stream that is still in operation. On the eve of San Juan (June 23rd), it is decorated with flowers, branches and fruits, just like the other six jets of the city.

Also in the festivities of San Juan, in the month of June – the arrival of the summer or Beñesmén, the name given by the Guanche, – the waters of the old port are visited by some very peculiar bathers: several herds of goats are guided by their shepherds towards the shore, and are submerged, one by one, in the purifying water (June 24rd).

And it is in the month of July, when Puerto celebrates its most beloved party: la Embarcación de la Virgen del Carmen. Tens of thousands of visitors congregate in this place, to pay tribute to their Patron, in a religious festivity that lasts several days and transforms this maritime city into a colourful place, decorated with flowers.

Not far from the pier and overlooking the sea, on the historic Calle Las Lonjas, is the Eduardo Westerdahl Contemporary Art Museum; A valuable legacy and great insight into history of the city: The Old House of the Royal Customs. The Tourist Information Office is found there.

Playa Jardín

El Teide from the shore

Its name says it all: A fine black sand beach, with easy access through a seafront promenade with 17,000 m2 of recreational areas, comfortable trails, gardens of canary plants, waterfalls and stone caves awaits you. Ideal for bathing, doing sports or taking a stroll at dusk.

It was designed in the nineties by the renowned Canarian artist César Manrique and is one of the most famous beaches in the north of the island, with magnificent views of the volcano Teide with 3,718 meters.

It is divided into three sections: Playa del Castillo, Playa del Charcón and Punta Brava Beach. You can swim here almost all year round thanks to its breakwater, or surf in the open zones. A path connects the beach with the gardens, children’s areas, terraces and cafeterias and there is even a stand in the form of a temple for musical performances.

It also has services for renting sunbeds and umbrellas, showers, locker rooms and wheelchair access.  There are itineraries available leading down from the roads to the beach and to the sea, and the pieces of urban furniture have also been adapted. There is a single continuous route from the car park to the beach, linking areas that comply with all the parameters of universal accessibility.

In addition to the removal of physical barriers, there are two accessible entrances from Avenida Francisco Afonso Carrillo which are connected to the parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility.

Visit the Castle of San Felipe, a small 17th century fortress converted into a cultural space, which usually hosts contemporary art exhibitions, small scale concerts and other cultural events.

Every June 23rd the bonfires of San Juan are lit on the beach; A festival of pagan origin, on the shortest night of the year, which uses fire as a purifying element to welcome the summer. Thousands of people gather on the sand, to dance to the sound of live music and enjoy the traditional spectacle of fireworks.

San Telmo

The small lava flow

Located on the central promenade of San Telmo, this picturesque cove is also one of the favourite places for the locals to enjoy a swim in the sea. Depending on the height of the tides, small puddles are formed which are natural pools, very crowded at certain times of the year.

It has special accesses for people with reduced mobility and there is an accessible itinerary from the Paseo San Telmo to the beach. This is possible thanks to the ramps that connect the two without the presence of stairs, steps, etc.

Sometimes it is prohibited to swim due to strong waves, so be very careful before diving into the water. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals. Enjoy this wonderful space and … borrow a snorkel mask and discover an underwater world as spectacular as the beauty on land.

Things to do and see in Puerto de la Cruz

Know the History of Puerto de la Cruz

Although as we have already mentioned Puerto de la Cruz was founded in 1502, it is recorded thanks to archaeological remains, that the area was previously inhabited by the guanche village. However, it is not known exactly at what historical moment the Guanches began to spread across Tenerife and other islands of the Canary Islands, although one of the most widespread theories, points to the desertification of the Sahara as a possible trigger that would have started the arrival of the first inhabitants of the island more than two thousand years ago.

With the Spanish conquest in the 15th century the port activity would soon arrive and with it the foundation of the town that would result in the present Puerto de la Cruz.

In 1706 an eruption destroyed one of the most important ports on the island at that time, that of Garachico, a fact that caused Puerto de la Cruz to acquire great importance.

This importance increased over time and in the nineteenth century Puerto de la Cruz had become an important international commercial port, which in turn prompted the visit of European scientists and artists, thus starting one of the first tourist centers of Europe. Something that reached a much greater dimension with the popularization of tourism in the 50s of the twentieth century.

Currently Puerto de la Cruz is one of the places on the island of Tenerife that welcomes the most tourists, who choose this town to stay due to the wide range of hotels and its location that allows good access by car to many of the most interesting places in Tenerife..

Beaches of Puerto de la Cruz (Puerto de la Cruz playas) in Tenerife

Local beaches can be characterized very capaciously – they are red-brown. Beach flags are painted red in these places (swimming is prohibited), and the sand instead of the usual yellow is black.

The sea is rough

In the competition of the southern and northern coasts of Tenerife, the score is three zero in favor of the south. The first indicator by which the north loses is the lack of sunlight, the second is the restless ocean and the third is the capricious climate. The coast in the town of Puerto de la Cruz loses in only two indicators, unlike the rest of the north, everything seems to be fine with the weather here, however, there are very few chances to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean. And some days they are even zero.
The beaches in Puerto de la Cruz are excellent, but huge waves spoil the whole picture, and more and more often a red flag is flying on the coast. Yes, and with traditional tourist attractions here, too, not everything is in order: bananas, parachutes, jet skis are absent, as a class, in view of the restless ocean. But what a savings! All these things you will not need in view of the fact that you will get a sufficient portion of extreme sports just by frolicking in the noisy waves of the local ocean.

Puerto de la Cruz beaches on the map of Tenerife:
Beach 1: Playa de Punta Brava

Punta Brava Beach is part of the large Jardin Beach, which extends to the west of Puerto de la Cruz. This beach is perceived as independent due to the stone embankment, which visually separates it from Hardin. Its main characteristics are volcanic sand and a red flag, reminding tourists that swimming is still not worth it. Playa de Punta Brava is a typical representative of the red-brown beaches of the north of Tenerife. Although, some tourists sometimes tell amazing stories about seeing a green flag on Punta Brava. This legend is passed from mouth to mouth. The length of this beach is only about 200 meters, the width is 50 meters. Renting a sun lounger and umbrella will cost 5 euros. On the beach of Punta Brava there are showers, toilets and many cafes.

Beach 2: Playa Jardin

Playa Jardin is the most popular and, according to tourists, the best beach in Puerto de la Cruz. In 2013, Jardín Beach celebrated its 20th anniversary since the well-known Canarian artist Cesar Manrique designed a holiday destination here. From the picture, pleasing to the eye, one can note a small garden spread along the entire coast, on the territory of which the most exotic plants grow, and even a small waterfall is located in its depths. The surroundings of the beach are also famous for their fish restaurants. An exemplary and very well-maintained beach, however, again painted in the red-brown colors of the north of Tenerife. Most of the time it is intended for sunbathing, but not for swimming. Calm in the local area is a rare phenomenon. Hardin Beach is 400 meters long and 80 meters wide. Renting a sun lounger and umbrella will cost 5 euros. There are cafes, toilets and showers along the beach.

Beach 3: Playa de Puerto

The name of the Puerto beach scares away the locals, because it translates as a port beach, which means the water will not be the cleanest. But there is no cause for concern, because according to the good old northern Tenerife tradition, it is dangerous to swim in these places. True, now, really, it’s not about the deadly waves, but about the purity of the water. Puerto Beach is located in the area of the old fishing harbor. A normal, not sea-starved tourist should not have a desire to swim. The beach itself is only 50 meters long and no more than 15 meters wide. Sun loungers and umbrellas all for the same 5 euros.

Beach 4: Playa San Telmo

Tiny, twenty meters long beach of San Telmo, and equally stretching, both in length and in width. A piece of square space is securely hidden from the waves by a special breakwater, and instead of sand on the beach, there are pebbles. Despite external unattractiveness, San Telmo beach is the only place in the whole city where you can swim without fear. Thank the piers, all two-meter waves reliably break against them. True, and here the red flag is not uncommon.

Beach 5: Playa de Martianes

This beach (Martianes) is perfect for all those who like to get their feet wet. The maximum that you have enough is to go into the ocean ankle-deep. Huge by local standards, but completely useless beach. Outwardly, it also does not look very attractive: there is not enough entertainment, and in itself it is a little run down. Apparently, the larger the beach, the more difficult it is for municipal services to take care of it. True, as the locals say, the project for the improvement of Martianes Beach, after all, exists, though so far only on paper, since the city does not have the funds for this. True, for all the unattractiveness for ordinary tourists, all lovers of extreme sports will rejoice here. The beach is full of surfers waiting for a high wave. The largest beach in the city is 400 meters long and 40 meters wide.
Renting an umbrella and sun lounger will cost 5 euros.

Puerto de la Cruz Attractions

Charco Square

Author: RaSlaMa @ Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 3. 0

In our view, the square is a large space rolled up in tiles, or, in extreme cases, in asphalt. The inhabitants of Tenerife looked at the concept of the square from a different angle and planted the main city square with trees. Then they still remembered the rules and installed a fountain in the middle. Benches were set up around and a children’s playground was installed. It turned out very cute and homely.

Around the square are historical buildings , where cozy cafes with outdoor terraces and souvenir shops with colorful trinkets await their visitors. There is a small shopping center near Charco Square, and a couple of minutes walk there is information center where you can take a map of the city and figure out where you can go. At the information center, you will certainly be advised to visit the Loro Park Zoo, the largest water park in Europe, Siam Park, or the mysterious Teidu volcano.

Charco Square is especially nice in the late afternoon, when the whole city is immersed in magical pre-sunset bliss. Soft music is heard from the cafe, musicians are playing Spanish tunes, children are running around, adults are not in a hurry and it becomes clear that life is good.

The best hotels near Plaza del Charco

Plaza Charco is a great area for those who want to live in the city center and at the same time near the beach . As we have already said, you can walk to the beach from here in 5-10 minutes, and the ocean splashes in a minute’s walk. In general, you can walk to any city attraction from the square, and if you need to go somewhere, the bus station is also nearby. And, of course, a lot of restaurants, cafes, shops and everything that Puerto de la Cruz can offer you.

The 4-star HC Hotel Magec is located in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz, a short walk from the beach. It offers spacious rooms with classic-style interiors. The three-star My City Hotel is located near Piazza Charco. You can walk to the ocean in a few minutes. It offers comfortable rooms with wonderful views of the old part of the city, a restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine, as well as a small rooftop swimming pool.

Paseo de San Telmo

Promenade Paseo de San Telmo connects Jardin Beach and Martianez Beach and Pools. There is also a beach on the embankment itself, but none of the locals can explain why people sunbathe and swim there, because the water there is dirty, the situation is not the most comfortable and there is no infrastructure. Therefore, for a comfortable swim, go to Jardin Beach or the Martianez pools, for cool surfing – to Martianes Beach, and for long walks along the ocean – to the San Telmo embankment.

The embankment stretches for two kilometers and runs along the water all this time. People come here to listen to the waves and cries of seagulls, breathe in the fresh ocean breeze, sit in coastal cafes and have fun. The San Telmo promenade offers a classic set of pleasures – Mediterranean cafes and restaurants, souvenir shops, small shops or kiosks where you can buy a swimsuit or glasses, and a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean and mountains in the distance.

The best hotels on the Paseo de San Telmo

If you want to enjoy the ocean every morning, have the beach right next to you and have breakfast in a cafe in the city center – choose a hotel somewhere in the waterfront area. You can walk to Loro Parque in 15-20 minutes, to the Botanical Garden in 15 minutes, and to Charco Square in general in ten.

The four-star Hotel Vallemar is located near the promenade, and the beach can be reached in a couple of minutes. Guests are offered comfortable rooms with comfortable beds, two restaurants, an ocean-view swimming pool and a spacious sun terrace.

The three-star Hotel Marquesa is located in a historic building near Paseo de San Telmo. You can walk to the beach in 10-15 minutes. The hotel building was erected in 1712. The reception hall has preserved the authentic atmosphere of the 18th century. It offers cozy rooms with views of the city, the ocean or the Teide volcano. The hotel has two restaurants, a small swimming pool and a panoramic sun terrace on the roof.

Loro Parque Zoo

Today Loro Parque is one of the most famous zoos in Spain. In Spanish, “Loro” means “parrot”, but not only these bright birds live here, but also penguins, dolphins, sea lions, sharks, tigers and lions, red pandas and lemurs and many other animals. The history of Loro Park began 60 years ago with a single parrot, which the German boy Wolfgang Kiesling decided to get himself. And then somehow it went off and on and he opened a parrot park in Tenerife, and now it is the largest collection of parrots in the world. And then marine inhabitants were added to the parrots, a dolphinarium and penguinarium opened, lions, tigers and smaller animals settled in spacious enclosures. As a result, Loro Parque Zoo has become the most popular entertainment venue in Tenerife. Only the Siam Park water park can compete with him, but since it belongs to the same already grown up boy, this is not competition at all.

Loro Park, like Siam Park Water Park, is decorated in Thai style , and here you can spend the whole day and not get bored. But if in order to get to Siam Park you need to go to the neighboring city of Costa Adeje, then Loro Park is located right in Puerto de la Cruz, not far from Jardin Beach.

In Loro Park you will find 150 species of parrots, total 4 thousand birds, a large dolphinarium and penguinarium, a huge aquarium with an underwater tunnel, enclosures with orangutans, as well as red pandas, sloths, meerkats, monkeys, jaguars, tigers and many birds.

On the territory of the park there are several cafes where you can relax and have a snack, as well as children’s playgrounds.

How to get to Loro Parque

If you do not live in the city of Puerto de la Cruz, from the center of which you can walk to the entrance to the park in 15 minutes, then the most convenient way to get to is by taxi or bus .

Bus number 343 travels from Los Cristianos to Puerto de la Cruz. Travel time 1 hour 45 minutes. The schedule can be viewed here.

Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden

The entire city of Puerto de la Cruz resembles a tropical garden, but there are several smaller gardens in this garden. For example, the city Botanical Garden, located one and a half kilometers from the sea.

The Puerto de la Cruz Botanical Garden was organized in 1788 by order of the Spanish King, who wanted to recreate the flora of all of Spain, as well as Latin America, Australia and Mexico in Tenerife. As a result, not in every metropolitan garden you can find such a plant diversity.

The garden is small, but very well maintained, so that walks turn into pure aesthetic pleasure.

This is a small botanical garden, which is primarily known for its orchid collection, palm trees, a friendly iguana that lives in the bush, and a pretty cafe that stands by a water lily pond.

Locals say that is the oldest garden in Tenerife . In 1730, a mansion was built here, around which a garden was erected. And later the garden was opened to the general public. Rumor has it that the famous naturalist Alexander von Humboldt, and later Agatha Christie, visited this mansion.

Sitio Litre looks more like a shady courtyard than a botanical garden. If you have already tried all the entertainment in the city and just want to have lunch in an unusual place, come here, order coffee and dessert and feed the carps in the pond – they will be very happy.

Where to go from Puerto de la Cruz

Teide Volcano

The most important decoration of the island of Tenerife is the great and mighty volcano Teide. Except that it is the highest point in Spain is also the third highest volcano in the world. The height of the Teide is 3718 meters and all this beauty can be seen with your own eyes not only from the balcony of your room, but also up close.

The last time the volcano erupted was in 1909, and then no one was particularly hurt. But in 1706, during the eruption, the city of Garachico and a couple of surrounding villages completely burned down. The locals rebuilt Garachico and have since called it “risen from the ashes”. Since we are talking about this, then you have the opportunity to get to know the city better, because here there are not only memories of the disaster, but also ancient monasteries, lava baths, snow-white villas and a picturesque ocean shore . You can admire this vibrant resort during the tour of Garachico – the Canary bird Phoenix.

Let’s go back to our volcanoes. Local natives named Guanaches believed that inside the volcano there was a portal to hell and the home of evil spirits. Another legend, of a later origin, says that the Guanaches themselves were descendants of the Atlanteans, and Atlantis in its best years was located not just anywhere, but on the Canary Islands.

Be that as it may, the Teide volcano is a succession of natural areas, space landscapes, rocks of bizarre shapes and incredible panoramas .

During the ascent to the top of the volcano, before your eyes, sprawling pines are replaced by low shrubs, and they, in turn, give way to lichens, and then the lichens give up, leaving only scorched earth, on which marvelous flowers and herbs miraculously grow. In addition to plants, several species of reptiles, hedgehogs, sheep and rabbits can be found here.

Visit the water park for adrenaline rush, steep slides, wave pools and delicious cocktails at the pool bar. If you like all this – consider yourself lucky, because Tenerife has the largest water park in Europe.

The water park is decorated in Thai style and was opened by the Princess of Thailand. In principle, Thailand itself has little to do with the water park, but the style is very cool – beautiful pagodas, huge dragons, sacred Thai symbols, many Thai restaurants where you can try many unusual dishes and drinks, as well as a high level of service and, of course , a lot of cool slides for adults and children.

The water park is located in the resort town of Costa Adeje, 70 km from Puerto de la Cruz.

Siam Park Infrastructure

Let’s start with the slides. In Siam Park you will be entertained by 15 slides of different difficulty levels, a sandy beach with a wave pool, artificial river that runs through the entire water park, wave slides with surf simulation, children’s entertainment complex and several pools. Shows, competitions, concerts are constantly held on the territory of the water park, in general, a lot of additions to extreme recreation.

The most popular slides are Tower of Power which teaches you what 28 meters of free fall is, Dragon which makes you understand what the state of weightlessness is, 235-meter slide Datong Rapids with a lot of unexpected turns , ups and downs, and water roller coaster La Singha .

Well, in addition to the slides, spacious sun terraces are waiting for you , planted with tropical greenery, cute cafes and bars where you can dine in an authentic Thai setting, as well as all sorts of must-haves such as showers, toilets and lockers.

Opening hours and cost of visiting

The water park is open every day.

From May 1 to October 31, the water park is open from 10.00 to 18.00.

From November 1 to April 30, the water park is open from 10.00 to 17.00

Entrance ticket costs from 38 euros for adults, from 26 euros for children.

Beaches of Puerto de la Cruz, attractions of the island of Tenerife, Spain

Puerto de la Cruz is a city with an interesting, centuries-old and diverse history. Firstly, the first resort site built in Tenerife (and still attracting crowds of tourists). Secondly, it contains the main percentage of the indigenous population of the island, who have retained their amazing national flavor. In Puerto de la Cruz you will find the best beaches of the island of Tenerife, and the city itself is filled with a special atmosphere that compares favorably with other Tenerife resorts, because thanks to the combination of rich history and the hospitality of the locals, tourists can feel in an absolutely homely and warm environment. The city is located in the north of Tenerife, in the Orotava Valley, 37 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 25 km from the airport.

The best beaches in Puerto de la Cruz

The beaches in Puerto de la Cruz are characterized by black volcanic sand. The northern part and the ocean are extremely harsh, the waters are colder and the waves reach enormous sizes, for this reason there are no natural beaches in a large city, only artificial ones (there are two main ones).

The first beach of Puerto de la Cruz is called Playa Martianez , located in the east of the city. People who are ready to get an unforgettable experience and cut through the huge sea waves, this place will be to their liking. Since the beach is not safe, the city administration took into account the “extreme” specifics of this area and built a complex of artificially created lakes, which became an attractive feature of the city: huge pools filled with sea water Lago Martianez . The main part of this unique place is a giant man-made lake with a total area of 15,000 square meters, painted with a scattering of fountains and tiny atolls of volcanic lava. Snow-white pools filled with turquoise water, against the backdrop of a dark raging ocean and dark volcanic rock, this contrast attracts the attention of every vacationer. Entrance -5.5 euros.

However, tourists prefer the beach Playa Jardin , which is located in the opposite part of the city of Puerto de la Cruz. For technical reasons, it is much safer than Playa Martianez beach. Playa Jardín was created from a costly project by artist and architect Cesar Manrique. The vast territory of this beach is divided into three parts by huge rocks. The beach is protected from the raging elements by a powerful concrete breakwater. It is located twenty minutes leisurely walk from the center and ten minutes from the bus station. The beach is free. There are paid sun loungers, free changing rooms and showers.

Attractions Puerto de la Cruz

Walking through history, you can see Puerto de la Cruz’s early fame as the most important port on the north coast of Tenerife. The end of the 19th century was characterized by a significant interest of tourists from England, it was thanks to this influx that the first hotel “Grand Hotel Taoro” was built in this period of time. Since 1979, the hotel has become available to the public more as a casino and entertainment center, but in 2006 the casino was moved to the Lago Martianes complex, so at the moment the hotel area is a park and walking area where you can enjoy the splendor of the Orotava Valley, since the Grand Hotel Taoro located on a hill of volcanic origin.

Also among the interesting sights of Puerto de la Cruz are places such as:

  • Charco Square – the city center. Construction using black volcanic stone. A place that exudes the aromas of history.
  • Church of Nuestra Señora de la Pena de Francia is one of the most beautiful buildings in which the ancient icon of the Madonna is kept.
  • Castle of San Felipe – a unique building, made in the Spanish colonial style, preserved to this day.
  • Miranda’s House is a dilapidated building that is currently a restaurant with a gift shop inside.
  • Fiesta Canaria is a huge concert hall that beckons with its amazing show using Canarian folklore.
  • Loro Parque the most remarkable place of the island of Tenerife, it invites us to meet and make friends with a variety of animal species.
  • Botanical Garden – created in the middle of the XVIII century to acclimatize tropical plants from overseas colonies, which pleases the eye with a rare and exceptional collection. Entrance – 3 euros.
  • Winery Casa del Vino – equipped with a tasting room, a wine museum, and a restaurant that can delight you with the unusual culinary delights of Canarian cuisine.

How to get to Puerto de la Cruz

The bus station is located in the west of the city, between Calle del Pozo and Calle de Cupido. There is a permanent bus service with the capital of Tenerife, with the south of the island, as well as with the northern and southern airports.

Distance from Puerto de la Cruz to:

  • capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife – 30 km
  • resort Playa de las Americas – 110 km
  • young airport – 95 km
  • North Airport – 25 km

Puerto de la Cruz is a city that can share the spring mood and tranquility. The tropical climate, the stability of the water temperature throughout the year (+20 °С to +25 °С), as well as the vast expanses of the Orotava valley will make it possible to dilute your life with pleasant and warm memories.

Tenerife Travel Guide: Puerto de la Cruz

Weather and Ocean

A very important point. This is of interest to all tourists who are eyeing Puerto de la Cruz, but trying to find answers to questions on the Internet often causes only confusion in the head. So, let’s try to separate the flies from the cutlets.

The climate in the north of the island is significantly different from the south, objectively not for the better. Especially in winter. Cooler, cloudier, rainier. But Puerto de la Cruz, although located in the middle of the northern coast, lies in a lowland, therefore it is fair to talk about a special microclimate in the city.

Compared to the south in Puerto, the air temperature is usually slightly lower. In summer, this is not important, and it can feel even hotter due to high humidity. In winter, the difference sometimes reaches four or five degrees, which is quite noticeable. Significantly less sun, higher chance of precipitation.
And if you don’t compare, then in general it’s not bad, if you didn’t sunbathe here and came to swim in the ocean. There is no need to take felt boots and mittens with you, no matter what would-be travel agents say. By the way, and in cloudy sunburn lays down very much even anything.

Pay attention to one more thing. On weather websites, the forecast for Tenerife is in most cases given for the capital – Santa Cruz. This misleads many and has absolutely nothing to do with either Puerto or the south. the capital itself. In the conditions of different climatic zones on the island, the weather must be looked at in a particular place. Below we provide the forecast for Puerto de la Cruz for the coming days.

Weather in Puerto de la Cruz for 5 days

About swimming in the ocean: most likely it will only be possible to wet your feet. There are beaches, as you can see for yourself, the water temperature differs slightly from the south, but there are almost always strong waves. This is a feature of the entire northern coast.
Tourists and locals bathe in the Lago Martianes swimming pool complex on the waterfront in the eastern part of the city.

History of the resort

It is located in the Orotava Valley in the north of the island, 25 km from Los Rodeos airport and 37 km from the capital of Tenerife – Santa Cruz. The rich and varied flora with evergreen forests (monteverde), extensive banana plantations outside the city is due to the influence of the trade winds, which maintain the resort’s humid climate.

Here life passes at its unhurried pace. It seems that elderly seniors, playing dominoes in the shade of numerous palm trees brought from Cuba, office workers rushing to work, children playing on playgrounds, do not notice the numerous tourists at all.

Puerto de la Cruz began its existence in the 16th century as the port of the community of La Orotava. Soon a square and a church were built in the port, but Puerto de la Cruz remained an inconspicuous fishing village until the eruptions of Mount Teide, the highest point in all of Spain, destroyed the main port of the island of Garachico in 1706.

Thus, Puerto (as the inhabitants call it for short) became the most important port of the island. The settlement grew and soon became an important trade center for wine, the production of which was facilitated by fruitful vineyards.

At the end of the 19th century, the city with full municipal autonomy came to the attention of moneybags from Foggy Albion, who chose Puerto as a place to relax.

Healthy ocean air and mild climate increasingly attracted guests, for whose accommodation the first Grand Hotel Taoro was built and the old mansions Monopol and Marquesa were converted into hotels. After the development of the island of the sunny south by the government in the 80s of the XX century, numerous tourists rushed there, and the city became the second most important.

Getting there

Puerto de la Cruz resort is located on the other side of the southern airport Tenerife, which receives charter flights from Russian cities. With him, the town combines an established bus service. The ticket price will be about 15 EUR.

Approximate distances from the resort of Puerto de la Cruz to other areas: the closest is the northern airport – 38 km, a little further the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. South Airport – 95 km way, and to get to the resort of Las Americas, you need to cover a distance of 110 km.

Tenerife has direct flights from Domodedovo Airport, from where they operate twice a day – day and night, but only on Fridays. They fly back without delay, on the same day, which determines the duration of the standard tour – 7 days. Additional flights are usually organized in the summer, as well as on holidays and school holidays.

    For children

Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife) is attractive for families. Children can visit the following places:

    1. Loro Parque was created in 1972 by local resident W. Kissling with his own savings, and currently the site receives 1.5 million visitors annually. Puerto de la Cruz – volcanic sand and lava islands .

    ..

Puerto de la Cruz is one of the largest resorts in the northern part of Tenerife. Rest here, definitely, has its own specifics. It is characterized by slowness, regularity and immersion in a typical provincial environment for these places …

    Figures and facts

Puerto de la Cruz is the sixth largest city in Tenerife. Its population is 32 thousand people. In total, in the agglomeration, which also includes Los Realejos, La Orotava and a number of other towns, there are 140 thousand people.

Puerto de la Cruz is located in the Orotava Valley, about 40 kilometers from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. From the northern airport of the island to the resort 25 kilometers.

The first herald of tourism here was the construction by the British at the end of the 19th century of the Grand Hotel Taoro. With her, by and large, it all started. However, Puerto de la Cruz has managed to retain its flavor despite the intrusion of Turbine. .

    Leisure style

Unlike the southern coast of Tenerife, where there are traditionally a lot of tourists, in the Puerto de la Cruz area, as they say, “peace and quiet.” So fans of a relaxing holiday, focused on communication with nature, will feel very comfortable here.

As mentioned above, the “crown” of this resort is in the unique atmosphere that reigns in it. Nothing violates the foundations of a leisurely philistine life, which can be observed just wandering through the streets of the city. There is no frank admiration for tourists and flirting with them, as in many other resorts. At the same time, guests are treated with great respect. This, in fact, is the “corporate style” of Puerto de la Cruz.

Beaches of Puerto de la Cruz

The beaches of the resort are what many tourists actually go here for. The fact is that on two local beaches there is surprisingly sparkling, dark, volcanic sand.

One beach, Puerto de la Cruz, is located in the eastern part of the city. It’s called Playa Martianez. This beach cannot boast of solid equipment, it is rather wild. So, as they say, not for everyone.

Another beach – Playa Jardin is located at the opposite end of the city. It is much better equipped and ennobled. This beach consists of four natural bays, around which there is a lot of greenery and even a waterfall. Not far from the coast there is a beautiful park and numerous cafes. In general, the infrastructure is in full order!

If suddenly the sea is a little stormy or you just want to change your location, there is always the opportunity to go for a swim in the pool complex, which is also located next to the Playa Jardin beach. The water in the local pools is sea. But the most interesting thing is that they have artificial islands of volcanic lava. Beauty, and more! It is no coincidence that these pools have long been the hallmark of the resort of Puerto de la Cruz.

We are sure that your stay in Tenerife will give you great pleasure.
