how New Year’s holidays are celebrated in Spain

Friends New Year is coming to us again with snow and frost. In any case, Santa Claus timely throws characteristic New Year conditions to most regions of our country. And how is this winter holiday celebrated on the warm Spanish shores, where in winter the temperature does not drop below +10 degrees? nine0003

Suppose you decide to celebrate the New Year in Valencia, Benidorm or Alicante. These are all popular tourist destinations. I myself visited all of them and could not get enough of the mild climate and comfortable weather for a beach holiday in October. Therefore, I became interested in how the New Year is celebrated in Spain, for example, in charming Valencia.

In the photo you see the main square of Valencia with an elegant city hall. This is what the square looked like in mid-autumn. And for Christmas and New Year’s holidays, it changes. Plane trees, framing a spacious area around the perimeter, act as living fir trees and sparkle with garlands. The classic pyramid is also required, denoting the main New Year’s attribute. nine0003

Note that the Spaniards do not install a local pine – pineda. By the way, its crown looks more like a plane tree than our Christmas tree. The pyramidal analogue of our green beauty in Valencia Square is “woven” from hundreds of lights.

Festive illumination shines invitingly with colorful lights, attracting people to the main squares not only on Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

Santa Claus in Spain is called in their own way – Papa Noel. This is a modern character and they show him nothing more than curiosity. However, accepting gifts from Noel at Christmas. nine0003

The Spaniards have a more significant tradition. They celebrate the so-called “Holy Twelve Days” – a magical period that begins with the onset of Catholic Christmas and lasts until January 6th. The evening of January 5th is a particularly desirable holiday for children, as it guarantees the receipt of gifts. This is a special “Day of the Three Wise Men”. Accompanied by the carnival procession, the wizard-kings (magi) appear and present gifts to the children.

Some rituals of the New Year’s Eve also appeared long ago. In the country of grapes, such a delicious berry could not be ignored. For more than a hundred years, the Spaniards consider it their duty eat 12 grapes under the chiming clock. Each berry is associated with a month of the year. Eating one at a time to the accompaniment of the chimes, the Spaniards take care of their own health, prosperity and, of course, the fulfillment of desires.

The construction of skating rinks is one of the modern traditions in Spain. You can ride on the ice on the same square of the City Hall in Valencia:

The ice rink is also flooded in Alicante. Of course, also on the main square Pl. Ayuntamiento in front of the facade of the city hall. There is such a rectangle protected from all sides – a convenient place for a festive tree and a skating rink next to it. nine0003

We need snow for the winter holidays, and many Spaniards have never seen it. They come to the festively decorated squares to celebrate the New Year, congratulate each other and set the tone for the coming year.

Staying at home on New Year’s Eve is not recommended in Spain.
