Spread across its seven main islands, the Canary Islands’ numerous beaches and tourist attractions attract over 12 million visitors per year, with families making up a sizeable chunk of that number. But where are the best places to book your next family holiday to this popular Atlantic archipelago? We round up the best of the bunch, all bookable on Culture Trip.

Costa Adeje

Resort

Vacationing families have been flocking to the sunny resort of Costa Adeje for as long as Tenerife has been a holiday destination. And it’s easy to see why, with some of the island’s best beaches (Playa del Duque and Playa Fañabé), a wide selection of hotels and plenty of family-friendly fun – such as the island’s best water parks, Siam Park and Aqualand. The setting on the south coast of the island also means guaranteed sunshine for most of the year.

Maspalomas

Located on the most southerly tip of Gran Canaria, this is one of the island’s oldest and more popular resorts. While things can get lively at night, it’s perfectly relaxed during the day, and families can find plenty to do here. It’s mostly known for its spectacular dunes, which have been declared a national park and are fringed by long beaches – families with older kids can also experience a camel safari. Children of all ages (and parents) can find all kinds of fun at the Holiday World theme park, which features thrill rides and classic amusements. As if that wasn’t enough, there’s also the Aqualand Maspalomas, offering numerous water slides and splash-based shenanigans.

Corralejo

Natural Feature

© ALAN OLIVER / Alamy Stock Photo

Once a fishing village, Corralejo is now Fuerteventura’s largest resort town. It’s positioned on the north end of the island. While the island is generally less developed than its neighbours, it’s still a great place for families with little ones. Besides the town’s sandy beach, just outside the resort, is the Corralejo Natural Park, a vast swathe of dunes and beautiful coastline that can be explored in dune buggies. There’s even a closed circuit Minnybuggy Safari Park for the little ones. Other kid-friendly destinations include the Acua Water Park. Catch a boat over to the volcanic wilderness and unspoiled nature park of Isla de Lobos, where you’ll find some of the best snorkelling opportunities on the Canary Islands.

Playa de las Américas

Resort

© master2 / Alamy Stock Photo

This Tenerife holiday resort was purpose-built in the 1960s and has remained particularly popular with bucket-and-spade package tourists ever since. Don’t expect much in the way of sophistication, but its big, brash and buzzy vibe is an undoubted draw for hordes of families each year. It has five main beaches (mostly artificial, with sand from the Sahara Desert), some of the island’s biggest resort hotels and – for families wanting to get away from the hubbub – the Central Park of Arona, providing 4 hectares (10 acres) of gardens, featuring native flora and plenty of play areas.

Costa Teguise

Natural Feature

For a calmer alternative to the purpose-built Canarian mega-resorts, head to Costa Teguise. It’s located next to its far louder and more garish neighbour of Puerto del Carmen, but development in this Lanzarote resort has been kept under check. The result is one of the most attractive resorts on the island, with beautiful sandy beaches, numerous family-friendly restaurants and a laid-back atmosphere. There are a few calmer protected bays with shallow waters for smaller kids, while older children can try a range of water sports on the main beach, Playa de las Cucharas. Also worth a visit is the Lanzarote Aquarium, which has an underwater tunnel surrounded by sharks. There’s also the obligatory water park within easy reach.

Puerto de Mogán

Natural Feature

Set at the mouth of a steep-sided gorge on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria, this is probably the most picturesque of all the resorts on the Canaries. Dubbed Little Venice, due to its pretty lanes and canals, the resort has a broad and very protected bay with artificial breakwaters that are great for snorkelling. A marina offers plenty of at-sea adventures, such as the underwater Yellow-Submarine Experience. It’s fancier and far less generic than most resorts, but just a 5-minutes drive away is the Lago Taurito Water Park in the neighbouring resort.

Costa Calma

Natural Feature

© mauritius images GmbH / Alamy Stock Photo

Beautiful white sand runs the length of this relatively remote resort and stretches for about 12 miles (19km) along the coast. As the name suggests, much of the beach is fabulously calm and perfect for kids of all ages (while also being popular with windsurfers in the breezier sections). While a later developer than most, there are now plenty of hotels to choose from for most budgets, from big resort properties to self-catering apartments. While there’s (shockingly) no water park, numerous centres are organising a wide array of water sports. There’s also the Oasis Park Zoo, which is only a short drive away and includes Europe’s largest cactus garden.

seonaidmcgill

21st January 2022

1/5  Canary Islands guide to Tenerife for multi-gen family holidays

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and a great all-rounder for multi-gen family holidays. Kids love the beaches and theme parks, especially in the sunny south. But the balance of lively resorts and more authentic towns and villages, goes a long way to keeping everyone happy, even on the busiest coasts. You’re never far from untamed landscape anywhere in Tenerife and most of it’s amazingly accessible. A wide choice of places to stay, from large holiday villas to five-star resorts is another plus point in the multi-gen mix. Then add in the long, hot summers – or warm winters – and it’s easy to see why it’s top in our Canary Islands guide for bigger than average families.

Why choose Tenerife for multi-gen family holidays?
  • Two airports: Tenerife South and North. Direct UK flights, four hours, year round.
  • Sunny south coast for golden beaches, watersports, lively resorts towns, luxury hotels, and holiday villas and apartments.
  • Slightly cooler north west coast for dramatic, lava beaches; lush countryside, and bustling Puerto de la Cruz.
  • Walking, hiking and stargazing in Teide National Park.
  • The historic and cultured south coast capital, Santa Cruz.
  • Traditional towns and villages like Masca and Garachico.

2/5  Gran Canaria, our recommended island for family activity holidays

Gran Canaria is often called, ‘a continent in miniature’ and it’s not too much of an exaggeration. The number 2 in our Canary Islands guide has over 70km of beaches. It’s home to the mighty Maspalomas Dunes – a top Spanish contender for the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’. And if you tear yourself away from the coast, the interior’s an enormous mountainous playground for climbing and biking, hiking and just about anything else the more energetic than average family can dream up.

Why our Canary Island guide recommends Gran Canaria for active families?
  • Direct UK flights to Las Palmas, year round, four hours, 25 minutes.
  • Over one third of the island is a UNESCO Biosphere, and it has 32 protected areas including the Maspalomas Dunes and Doramas Jungle.
  • Summer temperatures average 32˚, and seldom drop below 22˚ in winter.
  • Excellent for guided hikes, mountain bike tours, and camel trekking.
  • Catch and release cruises are a great intro to deep sea fishing for older kids and teens.

3/5  Lanzarote – pick of the Canary Islands for older kids and teens

Lanzarote is known as the ‘island of eternal spring’ because of the amazing weather. It’s closer to North Africa than it is to Spain and temperatures can easily hit 35˚ in July and August. Heat doesn’t stop play here for a second. The west coast is a magnet for serious surfers and top spot for surf schools and camps. Cyclists rave about the island’s smooth roads – and its challenging climbs – so there’s a pick of biking adventures here. You can even pedal peacefully along car-free coastal paths. And, because much of the island is also a protected biosphere – the part that isn’t immense Timinfaya National Park – it’s a spectacular destination for walking and hiking too.

Why choose Lanzarote for family holidays with teens?
  • Direct UK flights to Arrecife, year round, four hours.
  • Costa Teguise is top Canary Island destination for beginner windsurfing.
  • Surf School Lanzarote on the north west coast is one of the best in Europe.
  • The Risco de Famara range is the island’s highest and criss-crossed with biking and hiking trails.
  • Guided eco-treks in volcanic Timinfaya National Park are fun walking adventures for kids (you can camel trek too).
  • Enormous Famara Beach is fantastic for kitesurfing (and beginner’s lessons).
  • Try unique caving on guided tours of the underground lava tunnels all over Lanzarote.

4/5  La Palma – the cool and eco-friendly island for younger kids

La Palma is said to be the prettiest of the Canary Islands, it’s also the least touristy and more given to unspoiled nature than theme parks. The capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma would look perfectly at home in the 18th century. And the entire island is a biosphere, as well as one of Europe’s Dark Skies reserves. But Palma still keeps up with the rest of the Canaries in terms of remarkable beaches and slightly cooler summer weather makes for easy holidays with younger kids.

Why choose La Palma for family holidays with younger kids?
  • The greenest Canary Island, with over 1000km of marked walking and cycling trails.
  • Roque de la Muchachos Observatory is one of the best in Europe.
  • Hiking in enchanting Los Tilos, the largest laurel forest in the Canaries.
  • Exploring the amazing, colour-changing, salt flats of Fuencaliente.
  • Beaches and seafood restaurants at Port Naos.
  • Touring colourful Santa Cruz de la Palma, the island’s historic capital.
  • Climbing and walking in Caldera de Taburiente National Park.

5/5  Fuerteventura – for best family beach holidays in the Canary Islands

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands and home to over 150km of  beaches – more than any other island in the very beachy Canaries. Just don’t a expect acres of sun loungers and crowded sands. The shores here are wildly beautiful and finding a deserted spot is never difficult. Undeveloped Fuerteventura gives younger kids a lot more freedom than its busier neighbours. Sporty teens love the windsurfing, kitesurfing and plain old surfing here. And soulful families have quaint villages and the charming little city of Betancuria to explore – not to mention the island’s curious collection of ancient windmills.

Why choose Fuerteventura for family beach holidays?
  • Direct UK flights to Fuerteventura take four hours, 20 minutes.
  • A popular day out from Lanzarote: ferry crossing from Playa Blanca is an hour.
  • La Concha Beach is one of the loveliest in the Canaries.
  • Lobos Islet Natural Park is a haven for monk seals and sea lions.
  • Costa Calma golden sand beaches on the south of the island stretch, unbroken, for 10km.
  • The entire island was designated a UNESCO biosphere in 2009.
  • Good for quieter family resort towns, holiday villas and apartments.

Canary Islands with Kids – The Perfect Location for Family Holidays

Visiting the Canary Islands with Kids has something for every mini traveller. I have been to three out of the four Islands as a child and have very fond memories of our adventures. Each Island has something just that little bit different to offer. I personally don’t think children are ever too young to start exploring the world and at 18 months, the twins started their worldwide adventures too. Last year we visited Lanzarote. We went in February and the weather was ideal for little ones, not too hot but warm enough for plenty of paddling and splashing about in the sea! This year we are are returning to the Canary Islands, but this time, Tenerife. I will keep you updated on our holiday! The Canary Islands have lovely weather all year round so are perfect whenever you plan on travelling, if you fancy some sun for Christmas, the Canary Islands at Christmas are a great option as it isn’t a long haul flight from the UK.

  • March and April, the temperature increases a few figures to 19 degrees.
  • May has an average temperature of around 20 degrees across the Islands.

Travelling with twins and multiples can be daunting and many get anxious at the thought of flying. With flight times being between 4-41/2 hours, it is the perfect time for your little people to travel. If you want some advice about surviving a flight with twins, Take a look at my article here. Let’s face it, being in a confined space is not the easiest thing in the world!

  • Glorious beaches

There are countless beaches to choose from across the Islands. From dramatic black sands, to dazzling golden dunes, your little ones will love spending hours digging and building sandcastles. Beaches in the Canaries also have the perfect sea shallows for tots to paddle in and enjoy splashing about. Or older children can take advantage of the water sports and activities that are available. Many also have lifeguards on duty for your own reassurance.

  • Family attractions

There is a huge range of attractions to suit all family needs on the Islands. From Marine parks, zoos, theme parks, splash parks to museums, cycling and golf. They really do have everything to keep your family busy for days. But of course, if you prefer a spot of relaxation, then settle down with a book by the pool in your child friendly hotel whilst the children are in the kids club. We put the girls into the kid club and they loved it. It gave them a chance to play with everyday toys and us a chance to be adults!

Before you go

Ok so there are probably a few questions that you have at the back of your mind before you go. Here are a few tips to help make things even easier.

  • Car seats

You are able to hire car seats from most reputable car hire companies in the Canary Islands. When booking, just make sure you get these included then. Don’t risk waiting until you arrive as often they only have a certain amount for hire.

  • Cots

Most hotels will supply cots and bedding and have them ready for arrival. Just make sure when booking you make clear how many you will need and what is included.

  • Health precautions

There are no health precautions across any of the Canary Island but do be sure to take sun protection for all the family.

  • What to pack

If you are wondering what to pack for your week away, then Popitha have put together a packing list to help you. Click here.

Always make sure that when booking any holiday, that the company you are booking with is ATOL protected for your own protection. Holiday Gems has many child friendly hotels that will suit all family’s needs. Take a look on their website to see the great selection that they can offer. www.holidaygems.co.uk.

GO ON, PIN IT!

which Canary Island holiday is for you?

LoveEXPLORING’s family travel expert (and dad of two) Robin McKelvie, explains why Spain’s seven Canary Islands makes for an ideal break with the kids.

What if there was an archipelago of islands that work brilliantly for a family holiday, whether you’re looking for world class theme parks and luxury resorts, or low-key activities such as wandering upon miles of deserted white sands and hiking in the wilds?

Well the good news is that there is: and that oasis is the Canary Islands, whose seven main isles I have, as a travel writing dad, properly roadtested with the hardest to please reviewers around – my two daughters. Here is why each of the main islands works so well for a family holiday.

1. Tenerife

Slava296/Shutterstock

Let’s start with the most famous, and justifiably so, as the largest Canary Isle ticks all the family boxes and more. The south is home to a trio of big resorts. Of these, Los Cristianos is the most family friendly, while the Costa Adeje has the best hotels (although the Playa de las Americas can be a little bit too lively for some families).

READ MORE: Check out our full guide to Tenerife here

The island is also home to two great family attractions. Loro Parque is so much more than a zoological park, with its animal hospital (where vets come from over the world to study and work) and unique range of animals from dolphins and red pandas through to white tigers and lions. Siam Park, meanwhile, is quite simply the best water park in Europe. Make sure to book a cabana and you’ll have a private oasis for your family overlooking a massive wave pool and beach that is used for surf competitions.

TOP TIP: For a blow out special occasion, the Villa comes with its own hot tub!

2. Fuerteventura

Elitravo/Shutterstock

For me the second largest Canary Isle is home to the finest family resort in the region. Corralejo is a real mix of proper Spanish town and tourist hub, with great beaches and a seriously welcoming and friendly vibe. There are also top-notch watersports with the chance for kids to have a go.

It’s a great base for exploring the island too and the epic sand dunes of the Corralejo Natural Park await just on the outskirts of town. Here you can walk for mile upon mile without any development and then ease back into the resort for all the usual trimmings afterwards.

There is a brilliant coastal walk for energetic families to El Cotillo (pictured above), though you can take just take the bus or drive to enjoy its family friendly seafood restaurants.

3. Gran Canaria

Laszlo Halasi/Shutterstock

Often eulogised as a ‘Continent in Miniature’ Gran Canaria stacks up very well for families and is the closest Tenerife has to a rival as an all-rounder. It already boasted a swathe of golden sand beaches and fun resorts, but things stepped up a notch further earlier this year when the Poema del Mar flung open its doors.

The most modern and sophisticated aquarium in Europe is epic in scale and ambition – it needs at least a day to explore properly – and you may well come back for more. Think everything from cute turtles and rays, through to scarily hulking sharks. Real thought has gone into this gem for families right through to the restaurant with views back towards the marine life, which helps keep wee ones enthralled.

4. Lanzarote

Dziewu/Shutterstock

This is the isle for families with a sense of style thanks to one man, Cesar Manrique, the visionary Canarian artist who brilliantly fashioned this volcanic island with his tasteful Modernist designs.

He was committed to working organically with nature rather than blighting it, a lesson for any schoolchild in these times when environmental issues are to the fore.

He fought against high rise buildings, and instead built gorgeous public lidos, spectacular mountain viewpoints and his own studio (built on a lava flow), which is now a museum and foundation dedicated to this mercurial man.

Swirl in the best wines in the archipelago and mums and dads are happy here, as well as design conscious teenagers.

5. La Palma

IndustryandTravel/Shutterstock

It’s easy to see why this glorious Atlantic island is known by Canarios as ‘La Isla Bonita’. It really is jaw-droppingly pretty.

It’s also world class when it comes to hiking and I recommend it for families who love getting their boots on.

READ MORE: 6 essential experiences you must have in La Palma

Trails vary from coastal scrambles to the remote Fuencaliente Lighthouse (pictured) through to the volcano-hopping adventures along the legendary Ruta de los Volcanes. Wee ones can walk in subtropical rainforest and dream of dinosaurs as they enjoy the bountiful flora and fauna of an island that is like one giant geography lesson.

The Caldera de Taburiente National Park is more Jurassic Park than theme park and is crisscrossed by a lush network of trails, which skim by its tumbling waterfalls and scythe through its thick forests.

6. La Gomera

Mikadun/Shutterstock

When you arrive in San Sebastian de la Gomera it’s hard to believe you are so close to Tenerife. The short ferry hop over is more like a time machine.

Fling off your shoes and slip on some sandals as you and your family come down several notches on this ultra laid-back isle. It was the last place Columbus is said to have stopped on his way to the New World and I’m surprised he didn’t stay. This may not be the best island for resorts laden with facilities –  though Valle Gran Rey has been attracting a steady stream of holidaymakers looking for something different since the Seventies –  but for a relaxed break it’s a real tonic.

And if you’re staying on Tenerife you needn’t miss out on La Gomera’s charms either, simply pop over for a day trip.

7. El Hierro

Acongar/Shutterstock

This is the hideaway for mini adventurers and budding Robinson Crusoes. The most remote Canary Isle is set adrift all on its own – wow kids by telling them that the first sailors to pass by were literally sailing off the map.

Wherever you are now, ask around you and I bet no one will have been to El Hierro. So if you want to inject a bit of the pioneer spirit into your wee ones bring them here to holiday on what feels like an island set adrift at the end of the world.

Again we are not talking big resorts here – there is scarcely a town to speak of – but the all too rare chance to really get away from it all. This virginal corner of the planet was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2000 and a Geopark by the same global body in 2014.

You really need a car to explore, though there are some brilliant hikes and also the chance to learn about Europe’s newest volcano at the Volcanic Interpretative Centre near Restinga.

Family Holiday in the Canary Islands

As a huge fan of islands who has visited Hawaii, Fiji,
the islands of Thailand and the Caribbeans, I decided it
was time to explore another set of islands that are
great to visit during the winter for people living in
the northern hemisphere.

I decided to visit the Canary Islands. The Canary
Islands belong to Spain, but are geographically located
closer to Morocco.

They are an excellent destination for any time of the year. In
the winter, the maximum temperature is between 20-25
degrees Celsius, and in the summer it does not go above
30 degrees. Most of the islands – especially their south
sides – are blue-skied and sunny. In short, perfect
weather!

The atmosphere of the islands is also wonderful
and traquil. The locals are friendly, most speak at
least some English, and most of the tourists are
Europeans (English, Scandinavian, Icelandic, etc)
escaping from the winter cold.

Anyone could enjoy a
visit to the Canary Islands. There is something for
everyone: People who love relaxing, fancy hotels,
charming swimming pools, beautiful beaches, and water
sports; people who love nature, hiking and biking;
people who like old towns and markets; and even people
who like big cities and shopping. The connoisseurs among
you will also enjoy every minute. The islands are full
of restaurants serving typical local food, sea food, and
tapas. There are plenty of coffee shops, and meals in
most hotels are also very high quality.

The
islands feature varied plant life, including cacti on
the one hand and tropical rainforests on the other. Some
of the plants are unique to the islands, such as the
interesting Dragon Tree.
The Canary Islands are made
up of seven main islands, connected by airports and
ferries. Some are quite small and a day trip is enough
to see them, but some are big enough to require several
days to see the best they have to offer. I chose to
focus on the two largest and most well-known of the
islands: Gran Canaria and Tenerife, which are both
particularly suitable for a family vacation.

You can travel between the two islands by
ferry (which can take your rented car between the
islands as well) or by flight – a short (30 minutes) and
inexpensive one. The ferry trip between Gran Canaria and
Tenerife takes 45 minutes in the fast ferry and two
hours in the slower, inexpensive one.

Gran Canaria

In Gran
Canaria I recommend staying in the south of the island,
where the weather is sunny and pleasant and where there
is a variety of family lodging options.

There are
beautiful resorts with pools, beaches, water parks, gym
facilities, and plenty of activities for children and
adults alike; less extravagant hotels at great prices;
and a wide selection of apartment hotels. It’s important
to note that many three-star or three-and-a-half-star
hotels in the Canary Islands would receive a much higher
rating were they in many other countries (due to lower
taxation, many hotels prefer to keep a lower rating than
their hotels actually deserve).

The best resort
area for families is Taurito, where, besides a beautiful
beach, there are plenty of family attractions. A highly
recommended all-inclusive hotel chain is Paradise Hotels
and Resorts, which has three lovely resorts in Taurito
with a joint water park. The one most suitable for
families is
Hotel Paradise Lago Taurito.

The
south has plenty of options for active vacationing and
water sports including parasailing, banana boats, water
scooters, kayaks, pedal boats with slides in them, and
more. You can also go biking, horse riding, and even
camel riding.
It is worth noting that lodging, food,
and even shopping in the Canary Islands are relatively
cheap compared to Europe. This is mostly thanks to low
sales taxes on the islands. It is also handy to know
that entry to all beaches on all of the islands is free,
including entry to beaches right next to the most
luxurious hotels. Entry to national parks is free as
well.
Thanks to the relatively small size of the
islands, they are an ideal destination for ‘star trips’.
You can spend several days in the south side of the
island and include some day trips to other parts of the
island, with no car trip taking over an hour and a half.

Las Palmas city

In Gran Canaria, a car trip from the resorts in the
south to the capital, Las Palmas, takes 40-60 minutes.
The drive from the resorts in the south to the mountains
in the east and north of the island is just over an
hour.
Las Palmas is a bustling, lively city which
requires a full day to see. It has a long promenade
along the beach called Las Canteras Ave which is full of
restaurants, coffee shops and souvenir shops, and has a
beautiful view of the sea. Not far is a big and busy
shopping mall called Las Arenas. Nearby are many
pedestrian malls full of brand-name stores and a branch
of the famous department store, El Corte Ingles.

A short drive away, not far from the harbor, is the old
city of Triana. It has a food market, typical Canarian
houses with charming balconies, shops, and Colombus’
House – Casa de Colon – now a museum about the travels
of the Spanish explorer who stopped at the islands to
repair his ships. Some say he had a secret romance with
the wife of the governor of the island La Gomera.
Columbus is very popular in the Canary Islands. There
are streets named after him and many places connected to
him: The church he attended, the tower he used to
frequent with his lover, his house, etc. In the museum
there are also paintings and sculptures from his time
and before his time, as well as parrots that walk around
freely in the beautiful inner courtyard of the house.

 A
short walk from Casa de Colon through a pretty street
leads to the government building, which faces a big
church.
I also recommend visiting the “Canary
Village” where there are typical Canary houses, as well
as the nearby botanical gardens. Wrap up the trip with a
visit to the nearby sports harbor, full of yachts and
coffee houses overlooking the water.

Exploring the island

You would do
well to dedicate another full day to the towns and
villages in the mountains in the north and centre of the
island. The town nearest to the south is Aguimes,
located in the east of the island. It has a beautiful
square full of statues and greenery and lovely brick
houses. It is fun to walk through its streets and
alleys, discover more statues of donkeys and camels and
people, and visit the visitor centre, which has a small
museum that explains the history of the place and even
has a couple of mummies of the aboriginals of the
islands.

Not far from there you can visit caves
where the aboriginals used to live hundreds of years ago
and today, after some renovation, serve as houses.

In
the town of Arucas stands the island’s big rum factory,
where you can take a tour to learn about the rum-making
process and see the machines that fill and package the
bottles at work. Adults can also visit the tasting room
and try various flavours of the local rum for free. The
factory’s shop is very cheap! All visitors leave happy
and giddy…

The town Firgas features a big,
beautiful artificial waterfall surrounded by the emblems
of the various counties of Gran Canaria and beautifully
painted benches. There are also large three-dimensional
maps of the seven Canary Islands a little further up the
same street.

Another lovely village up in the
mountains with a name that may seem unwelcoming to
English-speaking tourists is Teror, known for its
colourful marketplace and its narrow alleyways. From
there you can go on to the highest point of the island,
Cruz de Tejeda, which overlooks the entire island. On
clear days you can even see some of the neighbouring
islands in the horizon. You can go on guided jeep tours
in the mountains, ATV tours and even donkey-riding
tours.
You should dedicate the rest of the days of
your trip to the south side of the island, where there
are many lively towns with beautiful beaches and myriad
options for activities. Don’t miss out on the dunes of
Maspalomas: enormous, sprawling sand dunes that go all
the way to the shoreline which you can climb, sit on and
slide down.

The loveliest town in the south is
Mogan, nicknamed “the Venice of the Canaries” because of
all of its canals. It has a fishing harbor, a beautiful
beach, and plenty of souvenir shops, restaurants and
coffee shops. The houses are very cute and built in the
same style. There is a popular market which is on every
Friday.

You can get to Mogan by car on a winding
scenic route or via the sea on a sort of aquatic bus
that travels between several holiday towns in the
southwest side of the island. Another great way to see
the towns of the south is by sailing in a yacht or
catamaran along the picturesque shores. You can watch
jumping fish and wild dolphins, As well as stop for a
swim in the clear, quiet waters of the sea not far from
the shore. Something kids especially will enjoy is a
‘pirate ship’ cruise which includes activities and
adventures.

The island has plenty of golf and
mini-golf courses, a karting track, a zoo, a crocodile
park, an aquatic animal park and a water park. However,
if you are looking for the best zoos and parks you
should visit the neighboring island to the west,
Tenerife, which has the biggest and best zoos and parks
of all the islands.

Fuerteventura island

You can go on a day drip to the
neighboring island to the east, Fuerteventura, known for
its wonderful beaches (which are considered to be the
best beaches in the islands) and its market. Faro de
Jardia lighthouse is also worth visiting, as well as a
local farm called Gran Tarajal, which produces cheese.
The ferry ride takes less than an hour each way.

Tenerife island

Tenerife is the island most suitable for those seeking
active vacationing, nature hikes, and family parks; less
so for those looking for the best beaches. There are
plenty of beaches on the island, of course, but most of
them are not as good as those of Gran Canaria and have
grey or black (volcanic) sand, unlike the golden sands
of Gran Canaria’s beaches (with the exception of a few
beaches whose sands have been imported from elsewhere).
Here, too, are many resorts and hotels of every shape
and size. An excellent chain of hotels with many hotels
and resorts all over the islands, including several in
Tenerife, is h20.

Like in Gran Canaria, in
Tenerife the south side of the island is sunnier and
warmer than the north side and most of the hotels and
resorts are there, including the newest and most
beautiful ones. Lodging prices in the north side of the
island are generally cheaper and the hotels are older,
but most are still excellent quality hotels. Tenerife
has two airports; one in the north and one in the south.
Both airports have flights from various destinations in
Europe as well as the neighboring islands.

Loro Park

The best
family attractions in Tenerife are Loro Park, a
beautiful, well cared for park which is a combination of
a zoo, botanical gardens, and Sea World-style animal
shows. There are aquatic animal shows – dolphins, sea
lions and killer whales – as well as bird shows, an IMAX
film, an aquarium with a walk-in “shark tunnel” and
plenty of colourful fish, a great penguin house,
crocodiles, and plenty of other animals, including
gorillas, tigers, and lots of birds. The park has
several good restaurants and shops. You can take a
guided tour through it for an additional fee.

The
park is located in the town of Puerto de la Cruz in the
north side of the island, known for its fishing harbor,
its seaside promenade, its black beaches and the
collection of excellent swimming pools between the
beaches. The town has a variety of restaurants and
shops. I recommend spending a full day in the park and
town altogether.

Siam Park

In the south side of the island
is the popular Playa Las Americas, a lively area full of
pedestrian malls, shopping centres, restaurants, beaches
and hotels (including some great apartment hotels).
Close to it is the best and biggest water park in the
Canaries and in Europe in general, Siam Park. It is
modeled to look like a Thai village and has plenty of
fantastic water slides, a big wave pool, a tubing river,
and a great water playground for younger children. The
park is suitable for all ages and all levels of bravery.
Here too there are several places to eat, including – of
course – a Thai restaurant. I recommend spending another
full day in this park and Playa Las Americas.

National park of Teide

For
those who love nature, the highlight of a visit to
Tenerife is, without a doubt, the National park of
Teide. It is located in the centre of the island and
named for the tallest peak on the island. The road to
the park is beautiful and scenic, passing by towns and
villages in the mountains. The park has hiking trails of
varying difficulty, impressive viewpoints, and a visitor
centre with a small museum where you can watch an
interesting film about the park.

 Entry to the park, like
all national parks on the islands, is free of charge. I
recommend returning to the south side of the island by a
northwestern road and stopping at a viewpoint to see the
cliffs of Los Gigantes.

Natural park Monte de Las Mercedes

Another lovely natural
park is Monte de Las Mercedes, located in the northeast
of the island. It offers beautiful hiking trails and
many viewpoints. I suggest combining a visit to this
park with a visit to the old capital of La Laguna.

A visit to island of La Gomera

A
visit to the small island of La Gomera makes for a
wonderful day trip from Tenerife. A 40-50 minute ferry
ride from Los Christianos harbor in the south of
Tenerife will get you there. The island has a national
park called Garajonai with a beautiful rainforest and
plenty of hiking trails running through it. Half of the
island, including its tiny capital of San Sebastian, is
mostly desert with a view of cliffs and cacti, while the
other half is green and tropical. The island is full of
beautiful viewpoints. An especially great one is La
Degollada de Peraza. The island is famous for its old
whistling language, which was a way of communicating
over long distances in the island for many generations
that has been preserved until today. It is nice to visit
the villages of Agulo and Rosas and eat at a local
restaurant where the whistle language will be
demonstrated to you. The best way to see the island is
on a guided tour that starts in Tenerife and includes
the ferry ride and all of the popular destinations of
the island.

Tenerife also offers yacht cruises,
bike tours, jeep tours, ATV tours, and Segway tours.

An excellent and reliable travel agency in the
Canary Islands with branches in most of the islands is
Tamadaba Tours.

Through them you can
order lodging of every kind at great prices, as well as

Which Canary Island is best for families?

By Nadine Mellor

Q: Which Canary Island is best for you and your family?

A: All of them!

The Canary Islands, a volcanic 7-island archipelago off south-west Morocco, is a near-perfect holiday destination. Their subtropical climate brings year-round sunshine, plus you get super natural attractions including beautiful coastlines, national parks, and lush topiary. Families come for the glorious beaches and great-value accommodation. Bonus: there’s no jetlag as you’re on European time! No wonder they’re known as the Fortunate Islands! So which will you take your kids to?

The ‘Island of Eternal Spring’, Tenerife is the largest and most touristy of the Canary Islands, and is served by the most flights. While some areas are been over-developed (in the south), half is protected for its astonishing biodiversity across 6 different vegetation zones. In its centre, UNESCO-listed Teide National Park holds Spain’s highest mountain, the Pico del Teide volcano, and an observatory (there’s great stargazing on the Canary Islands). Expect ravines and valleys in the interior, whereas the craggy coastline has plentiful beaches; those in the north come with black volcanic sand.

Where to Stay

Best Fly and Flop

Families will love apart-hotel Baobab Suites, an immaculate coastal resort just 20 minutes from the international airport. It has spacious suites (some with private pools or Jacuzzis), big main pools with splash areas, a sports centre, free kids club and family-friendly eateries. A safe, sandy beach is 15 minutes’ walk away (or there’s a shuttle bus), and you’re in the popular Costa Adeje, which has restaurants, shopping and waterparks.

Best Self-catering

La Malvasia is a trio of pretty stone cottages on the outskirts of a small village, 6km from the South-east coast. They each sleep 4-6, share a glorious pool and sun-deck with shaded chill-out area, and have views out to the Prussian blue sea.

More tropical than its cohorts, Lanzarote, the most easterly of the archipelago, has extraordinary lunar volcanic landscapes, such as the Mountains of Fire craters in the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya. Contrary to popular belief, the island is wonderfully undeveloped – no high rises! Beaches are fewer but offer golden sands and surfing.

Where to Stay

Best Eco

Quirky Finca de Arrieta is a great-value eco-resort set among peach and mango trees in the north of the island. The accommodation suits every size and shape of family, including stone cottages and Mongolian yurts, all with great kitchens and Balinese furniture. Kids will adore the fabulous adventure playground complete with trampoline, giant chess set and boat-turned-play structure. There are farm animals to meet, and a solar-heated pool, plus a sandy beach a short walk away.

Best Cottages

Stylish Finca Malvasia is a charming oasis of whitewashed stone cottages and a sub-tropical garden, set amongst vineyards. There’s a sparkling pool, well-equipped kitchens for easy self-catering, and welcoming owners who help you get the most out of your stay. You’re 15 minutes from the airport; beaches are even closer.

Best Villa

Beautifully restored farmhouse Villa Guatiza sleeps up to 4-6 in 2 bedrooms (+ sofa bed for kids). Pleasingly, you get an idyllic pool area, a walled garden and generous kitchen leading to a veranda with views to the hills.

‘Micro-continent’ Gran Canaria is the one with the most varied ecosystems. From sweeping sand dunes to lush valleys, a 1/3 of the island is protected as a Biosphere Reserve. Tourist development is mostly confined to the warmer and sunnier south; head to the cooler north for dramatic cliffs and mountains. There’s diving, hiking, and the best beaches are found on the east coast.

Where to Stay

Best Rural Hotel

Twenty minutes north-east of the airport lies tranquil Hotel El Mondalon surrounded by farmland. There are 10 rooms, hiking trails from the front door and a delightful restaurant. Parents will love the solar-heated pool with its Jacuzzi; kids will enjoy the playshed’s toys, books and games. There are also farm animals to meet, a children’s entertainer at weekends, and a small playground. The beaches are 10km away and you can horse-ride nearby.

Wanting to get off the beaten track? Head to the most north-westerly island, La Palma, the least developed and most scenic in the pack. There’s a premier observatory at its summit, much of the terrain is National Park, it’s still geologically active, and it has the most diverse plant life, including lots of pine forest. Wild black-sand beaches contrast with pastel-coloured colonial villages. Kids will be fascinated by the water tunnels (minas galerias) which transport water collected by condensation at altitude to the villages and plantations below.

Where to Stay

Best Value

Traditional Canarian residence Casa Los Geranios is in the sunnier south, perched on a hillside with superb views over vineyards and banana plantations out to the shining sea. Old-school in style, and great value, it can sleep up to 8 in 3 bedrooms. There are gardens for playing hide and seek, plus beach toys to take to the black beaches. The wonderful owner greets you with a welcome hamper and homemade cake, there are supermarkets and restaurants nearby.

Canary Islands for real estate buyers: resorts, prices, income

Gran Canaria stands out from other regions of Spain with higher rental yields. If the owner of an apartment in Barcelona earns an average of 5% per year, then in Las Palmas – 8%. And of course, here you can have a great rest, and all year round. In this article, we will talk about local resorts and real estate prices. Let’s say right away: the entry threshold is from €1000 per sq. m.

A tour of the island of Gran Canaria and local real estate is conducted by the realtor of the company Best House Maria Shurupova, who has been working in this region of Spain for many years.

The Canaries are an archipelago of 7 large and 6 small islands in the Atlantic Ocean. And also – an autonomous community in Spain. Administratively, it is divided into two provinces – Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. This material is devoted to the first of them.

Gran Canaria is a popular tourist region. Especially for guests from the northern part of Europe (Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, Norway). In 2016, 4.2 million people rested here. And yesterday’s tourists, as you know, often turn into real estate buyers.

Foreigners buy property all over the island, from the beach to the most remote mountain areas. Many Europeans, tired of the bustle of the city, prefer solitude with nature. However, property in coastal areas is in great demand, which is easy to rent out for short-term rentals, receiving a decent investment return. In addition, this scheme allows you to use housing at any time on your own.

Capital and suburbs: Las Palmas

The capital of the island Las Palmas is the largest and most multinational city with a developed infrastructure. Next to it are famous beaches (Las Canteras and Las Alcaravaneras) and a busy port (Puerto de la Luz), one of the most active ports in the world.

Las Palmas is suitable for those who want to move to live in the Canaries, as well as for tourists – lovers of city and beach holidays. The coastal part is located on a plain, equipped with a network of bicycle paths, which allows you to move around the center with health benefits.

The 3.1 km long Las Canteras beach has several quality marks, half of the beach is protected by a natural two-kilometer reef that protects it from waves and is ideal for families and seniors, the other half is a place for swimming in the waves and surfing. The beach is equipped with a slope for the disabled, showers, there are several playgrounds in the area.

For young people in the area there are several sports schools (surfing, diving, yoga…) that offer various summer courses with the possibility of budget accommodation. At night, there are a few but decent discos in the city.

The capital is one of the most expensive, but also the most promising areas for investors.

Especially in the last few years, due to the growth of tourism and the popularity of Gran Canaria, the demand for short-term rentals has increased significantly. The most sought after areas are beach areas, between the lower streets of the La Isleta peninsula, Las Canteras beach and Alcaravaneras beach.

The first and second coastlines with direct or side ocean views are the most expensive. Each “square” here will cost €3500-5000. The price depends on the year the building was built, the availability of an elevator, parking, terraces and finishing of the housing itself.

Luxury apartments are located mainly in the city, close to the beach, houses and villas in the nearest suburbs, 15 minutes from the center of Las Palmas, such as Tafira and Santa Brigida.

Apartment within walking distance from the beach, with no particular view costs €2000-3500 per sq. m. m. For example, a small studio (25-55 sq.m.) in the center can be found for €80-180 thousand. You can rent such an object for €40-55 per day.

Examples of properties in the capital of Gran Canaria

A 60-meter apartment in the area of the Reina Isabel hotel, near the beach of Las Canteras, can be bought for €160,000. Suitable for renting out. Luxurious estate with garden, swimming pool and panoramic views, 5 minutes drive from the capital, for sale for €990,000.

If you don’t have enough money to buy real estate in Gran Canaria, you can use a loan. Banks are willing to work with foreigners. Issue 50-60%, sometimes up to 65-70% of the assessed value of the property. Loan term from 10 to 30 years, depending on the age of the borrower. Interest rates 4-5.5% per annum. The conditions for changing the lending rate are fixed in the contract. As a rule, payments occur monthly.

North Shore: Agaete, Galdar, Sardina del Norte

Trade winds blow from the northeast, the prevailing winds of the islands, bringing atmospheric stability and low clouds. It is to them that the region owes its lush vegetation.

The development of the island began from the northern coast, this is its cultural and historical center. The climate in the area is slightly cooler and more humid than in the southern coast, and precipitation is more frequent, especially from January to May. There are rocky steep coasts, small towns with a Spanish flair, fishing ports and natural black sand beaches.

From the north coast, there is a picturesque view of the mountains, the ocean and the island of Tenerife.

The northern coast is located 25 kilometers west of the capital. It is chosen by lovers of solitude, nature, combined with local flavor. The most important advantage of the region prices, here they are several times lower than any other coastal zone.

Agaete is a small town in the northwest of Gran Canaria with traditional Mediterranean style houses. There are many interesting historical buildings, archaeological sites, authentic restaurants, natural swimming pools with ocean water and the charming fishing village of Puerto de Las Nives, from where inter-island ferries ply.

Galdar is a city of about 25 thousand people at the foot of the extinct volcano Pico de Galdar. In the past, it was an important cultural center and residence of the rulers of the indigenous population of the Canary Islands. Today’s Galdar is a popular tourist center of the island. Guests are attracted by its rich history and architecture. There are many beautiful old buildings and interesting museums in the historical center. The urban fishing port of Sardina is distinguished by a special local flavor and privacy.

The cost per square meter depends on the location, proximity to the ocean and the condition of the building. On average, real estate on the North Coast near the ocean is valued at between €1,000 and €2,500 per square meter. In the northern regions, there is the possibility of buying land for the construction of a family residence, a rural hotel or an apartment complex.

Examples of properties on the north coast of Gran Canaria

200m village house with “private” waterfront can be yours for €125,000. Luxurious villa with 5 (!) terraces and ocean views, located near Agaete beach, is for sale for €599,000.

South Coast: San Augustine, Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés, Meloneras

The southern part of the island is the warmest and driest, there is practically no rain here, and seasonal changes are hardly noticeable. South of Gran Canaria Mecca for lovers of warmth and beach holidays. The south coast is located 15 minutes from the airport and 35 minutes from the capital. Its central part the dunes of Maspalomas with an area of 325 hectares and the Playa del Inglés beach, almost three kilometers long.

It is hard to imagine that until the 60s of the last century the coast was practically uninhabited due to lack of moisture for crops. With the beginning of the rapid growth of tourism, the coast has turned into a developed area for beach lovers in two decades.

Now it is the most extensive and populated tourist area of Gran Canaria.

The area is divided into several zones. Meloneras is an exclusive area adjacent to the western side of the dunes of Maspalomas, consisting of villas, luxury housing and 5 star hotels. On the east side of the dunes are Maspalomas/Playa del Inglés , a flatter and wider, densely built-up area. In the continuation of Playa del Inglés isolated narrow areas San Augustin and Bahia Feliz, with small beaches and a more relaxed pace of life. All areas have everything you need – supermarkets, restaurants, shopping centers.

Prices vary between districts. First of all, real estate is valued in the immediate vicinity of the ocean, the presence of a terrace and parking. The type of property and the features of the complex are very influential, the cost starts from €2,500 per sq. m and can reach up to €7,000.

When choosing a property for subsequent rent, it is very important to consider the cost of maintaining the territory of the complex. In the presence of swimming pools, parking, gardens and surrounding areas, the price can vary from €60 to €300 per month.

Examples of properties on the south coast of Gran Canaria

Bungalow with terrace, private garden and views of Maspalomas and the ocean can be bought for €177,000 Chalet with ocean views and a spacious garden in one of the elite areas of the south of Gran Canaria San Augustin is for sale for €850,000.

Do not forget that the purchase of luxury real estate in Spain – worth from €500,000 – entitles you to obtain a residence permit. Read more about the latest changes in the Golden Visa investment program read here .

Southeast Coast: Arguineguin, Puerto Rico, Tauro, Amadores, Mogan

The southeast has the same warm and dry climate as the southernmost point of the island. Tourist towns are located in small gorges along the coast. Almost all residential real estate is located on the slopes of the mountains and has a stunning open view of the ocean.

Arguineguin is a small town in the Canaries, not so long ago a fishing village. And today, Arguineguin, while continuing to be a port, has become a tourist resort. This small town has managed to preserve its original old center and local way of life.

Puerto Rico – in just a few decades, a small fishing port has turned into a chic resort. Especially often families with children come here, as Puerto Rico has all the conditions for a family holiday. A small bay is surrounded by rocky slopes, on which hotels and apartments rise. From the fishing village that once was here, not only the name remains, but also the port. Now it consists of two parts and is located on both sides of the beach. There are no large ships here, everything is occupied by catamarans, yachts and boats.

From Puerto Rico to the bay with blue water and golden sand Playa de Amadores leads a kilometer-long promenade, which is simply made for walking. The perimeter of the bay is surrounded by hotels and apartments. Playa de Amadores has been awarded the Blue Flag for the quality of its waters and amenities. For people with disabilities, bathing chairs, walkways and fences for a comfortable stay in the water are offered.

Finally, Puerto de Mogan is a picturesque resort, the latest on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria. For the canals and bridges built on the narrow bays of the sea, this place is called “Little Venice”. There are various restaurants and bars along the pier, while the old town area is lined with quaint Mediterranean houses and cottages clambering up the side of the mountain. Puerto de Mogan is a major port where yachts traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea stop. The streets in the city are small, entwined with flowering plants. A leisurely walk along them will bring a lot of positive emotions.

Due to the limited area and amazing atmosphere, this is one of the most expensive areas to buy real estate. The average cost per square meter is around €3,500.

Examples of properties on the southeast coast of Gran Canaria

Furnished one-bedroom apartment with a large terrace overlooking the ocean can be yours for €121,500. Cozy apartment in a quiet area with stunning views of Anfi del Mar beach is for sale for €140,000.

Maria Shurupova: “The global economic crisis has certainly affected the real estate market in Gran Canaria, especially in non-tourist areas. Prices in some places have decreased by up to 40%. But the cost of housing in the southern regions and in the center of the capital has not changed much, the crisis had little effect on them.

The results of 2016 prove that a positive trend has begun on the market. And in 2017, the trend continues. The total volume of real estate transactions increased by 3.1% compared to the same period last year. The number of newly created companies has increased significantly. From January to May, 1376 firms were registered. This is the highest level since 2008. The Canary Islands government report also indicates that business confidence has grown significantly (and continues to grow). In the first quarter of 2017, this economic indicator reached its highest level since the beginning of 2013.”

British families cancel trips to the Canary Islands due to double vaccination requirement for children

11. 02.2022

UK travel agencies are seeing a notable wave of cancellations and reschedules for short trips to mainland Spain and the Canary Islands that many family travelers have previously booked. Tourists are not satisfied with the requirement that children over 12 years of age must be vaccinated twice to enter .

According to the British travel press, UK travel agencies are noticing a serious flurry of cancellations for short family trips to Spain in February and March.

Many British tourists, fearing the “omicron”, have postponed their Christmas trips to different countries to February and March 2022, choosing Spain: for example, in February, the Canary Islands are traditionally popular with British families who are looking for a holiday destination with good weather, but without a long flight . But now tourists are canceling those bookings.

CHILDREN’S DUAL IMPLICATION REQUIREMENT MAKES FAMILIES REJECT TO TRAVEL

This is due to the fact, British travel agents explain, that in order to enter the Canary Islands and mainland Spain, there is a requirement that all children over 12 years old be vaccinated twice. It is because of the requirements of the Spanish side that up to half of the family clients of several surveyed travel agencies in different parts of the UK have changed their vacation plans.

In Britain, vaccination of children is not mandatory, and many Britons, judging by the available statistics, are not eager to vaccinate their children as soon as possible. By January 2022, about half of children aged 12-15 had received only the first dose of the vaccine, and the percentage twice vaccinated (requirement to enter Spain) is much lower (about 30%). That is, about 70% of British children aged 12-15 did not receive a second injection.

The high percentage of children aged 12-15 who are not vaccinated with the second dose is also affected by the fact that it was only allowed to administer it to teenagers in the UK on December 20: of course, most families, even if they wanted to, would not be able to physically meet the requirement for two vaccinations. In addition, many are now sick and receive a temporary medical exemption.

Most of these families in Britain are now changing their holiday destinations (TUI says Mexico and Turkey are the most popular alternatives) or postponing their holiday plans until Easter (postponing dates, hoping for easier entry conditions).

HOTELIERS IN THE CANARY ISLANDS ASK THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT TO LEAVE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR ENGLISH

Host companies in the Canary Islands, in turn, report that they have lost a significant number of bookings during a critical period of the year for them.

Jorge Marijal, president of the Tenerife Hoteliers Association, says the industry wants the Spanish government to change its rules so that more British families can come to the islands.

According to him, the short-term losses in the Canary Islands due to the requirement to vaccinate children over 12 years old could amount to almost 400 million euros. And this is only the loss of hotels – if you take into account the restaurant sector, they will be much larger. it will have a huge impact.

“For us, the UK market is the biggest. Over 2.5 million Britons visit Tenerife every year. For us, this part of the year is one of the most important, and most of the income will be lost,” he says.

BRITISH TOURISTS RETURN TO TRAVEL OFFICES

Despite the difficulties with their clients traveling to certain destinations with strict entry rules, travel agents in the UK are generally optimistic. The number of tour and hotel bookings is growing rapidly.

Many companies say that in the last week of January, the number of bookings for tours returned to the level of January 2020 (before the pandemic began). At the same time, the average check for a tour has increased by 482 pounds sterling since 2019 – mainly due to the fact that the Britons, yearning for outbound tourism, are increasing the duration of their holidays abroad.

British experts draw attention to another remarkable fact. Tourists who once went on an “independent voyage” return back to travel agents in their offline offices, and do not book online on global platforms.

Such consumer behavior, according to the owner of one of the British travel agencies, is determined by two main factors.

The first is that tourists themselves find it difficult to deal with the existing confusing system of restrictions on flights, entry and stay in foreign countries, and they need the help of a professional in this. The second one is purely human.

“Now they want to talk to a person and not just deal with an electronic system. They want to make sure they get professional and thorough advice where they can ask for details before booking. Plus, they now more than ever need to know that someone will accompany them with advice and advice during their holidays, ”the British press quotes one of the market experts.
