Caldera de Bandama, Gran Canaria. The Caldera de Bandama is one of a number of small calderas to found on Gran Canaria. This caldera of 1km in diametre and 200 metres depth has been dated at 20 BC. Originally a double cinder cone, the caldera was formed later.

Caldera de los Marteles, Gran Canaria. Situated close to the summits of Gran Canaria (Pico de Las Nieves) and at the head of the Guayadeque canyon, the Marteles caldera was formed some 100,000 years ago by a phreatomagmatic explosion.

Caldera del Corazoncillo, Lanzarote, Canary islands. The Caldera del Corazoncillo is located close to the Timanfaya volcano and is one of a number of strombolian cones to have been formed during the 1730 to 1736 eruptions

Chinyero volcano, tenerife, Canary Islands. The “Volcan Chinyero” was the last eruption to have occured on the island of Tenerife in recent history. The Strombolian type eruption of 1909 lasted for 10 days emiting basaltic pyroclastic material and aa lava flow.

Pico Viejo; Tenerife, Canary Islands. Crater of the Pico Viejo (Old peak) volcano. Pico Viejo last erupted in 1798, an eruption lasting 92 days, during which basaltic lava flows and pyroclastics were emited from a flank fissure vent.

Duraznero volcano, La Palma, Canary Islands. The Duraznero volcano forms part of the larger San Juan Volcano, a fissure vent system situated along the summits of the “Cumbre Vieja” the island’s southern half and most active volcanic edifice.

Hoyo Negro crater, La Palma, Canary Islands. The Hoyo Negro (Black Hole) forms part of the San Juan Volcano, a fissure vent system situated along the summits of the “Cumbre vieja” the island’s southern half and most active volcanic edifice.

It used to be my dream to visit the Canary Islands. Thirteen islands of volcanic origin located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest coast of Africa, seven of them are large and inhabited, the rest are small and uninhabited. The islands belong to Spain and are an autonomous region of this state. There are two capitals: Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, they perform their functions alternately, transferring powers to each other every 4 years. The main and largest islands are Tenerife and Las Palmas. There is an opinion that the islands got their name from canaries, but this is not true – these birds were named after the islands.

The very name Canary Islands is translated from Latin as the islands of dogs. There are several versions of the origin of the name of the Canary Islands. So in one of the ancient documents it is reported that the inhabitants of Mauritania who sailed to the islands saw many large dogs there. According to another version, the first sailors who visited these islands saw huge rookeries of sea lions there, translated from Latin as “sea dogs”. There is another version, according to which the Canary Islands got their name in honor of a deity with a dog’s head, which was worshiped by the ancient inhabitants of the islands.

The weather in these places is warm, sunny and comfortable, it is due to a mixture of hot and dry winds blowing from the African continent from the Sahara desert and moist cool oceanic air masses. The temperature of water and air on the coast very rarely falls below 21 degrees Celsius. The Canary Islands are mountainous, some peaks reach a height of up to two kilometers. The slopes of the mountains are covered with a variety of vegetation, most often there are coniferous trees under which porcini mushrooms grow.

Before the arrival of Europeans, the islands were inhabited by the Guanches, who were engaged in primitive agriculture and cattle breeding. They wore skins and were able to mummify their leaders. After them, an amazing architectural monument, the pyramid of Guimar, remained. The modern inhabitants of the islands are the descendants of the Guanches and the Spaniards, there are about two million 112 thousand people, they live in small, quiet, cozy towns.

All in all, the Canary Islands is one of the most beautiful places on our planet. But, alas, my dream was not destined to come true for many reasons, the main of which is my vision, I wanted to see all this beauty !!!, and not imagine it, turning on my imagination. And I can also fantasize on hot summer days in my village, putting a cot in the garden and imagine that it is a sunbed on the Pacific coast, and having a swim in a rivulet, think that you are swimming in ocean waves. And yet, if I could visit the Canary Islands, I would like to meet kind, friendly people, make friends with them, as well as listen to local folk music and songs, try national cuisine and just breathe in the fresh sea air. That’s what I would expect from this trip.
