Introduction

In the Cape Verde Archipelago, the climate is very unusual, in fact, it is tropical arid, with temperatures generally not too high despite the latitude. This happens both because of a cool sea current and because of the trade winds, which steadily blow from the northeast, especially from November to May.

The islands are divided into two groups: in the north, the Barlavento or Windward Islands (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Ilha do Sal, Boa Vista), which have a more arid climate, and in the south, the Sotavento or Leeward Islands (Maio, Santiago, Fogo, Brava), which are a bit more rainy. The Barlavento Islands to the north are definitely desert, since they receive less than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain per year, while the southern islands receive between 200 and 300 mm (8 and 12 in) of rain, so their climate is semi-desert.

In both groups of islands, in lowland areas and along the coasts, there are rare rains concentrated in the period from August to October (and sometimes also in July), which is also the warmest time of the year. The rains are quite irregular, which means that during certain years, the rains are very scarce or absent, while during other years, there may be heavy rainfall, usually concentrated in a few days (or even just one), which may result in landslides and flooding, also because of the scarcity of vegetation, as occurred for example in September 2012 in Sal and Boa Vista.

As for the temperature in Cape Verde, there is a hot and muggy period from July to November, and a more temperate and dry period from December to June, during which the north-east trade winds constantly blow. During the coolest season, from January to March, daytime temperatures are around 23/24 °C (73/75 °F) on the Barlavento islands and around 26/27 °C (79/81 °F) on the Sotavento islands, while night minima are a few degrees lower, around 19/20 °C (66/68 °F).

In Cape Verde, the weather is rarely very hot, however, the temperature can sometimes reach 35/37 °C (95/99 °F) from May to October, when the wind blows from the African continent.

The north-east trade winds begin to blow in November and gradually lower the temperature; the wind attracts fans of windsurfing and kitesurfing especially on the eastern islands (Santa Maria, Boa Vista), from November to May. Sometimes, weather conditions change and the trade winds are replaced by the Harmattan, a dry wind that blows from the Saharan desert, and can bring dust and sand storms, reducing visibility and hampering human activities.

Even during the dry period, from December to June, on the northern slopes of hills and mountains, a bit of cloudiness can form, and a bit of rain or drizzle can fall. In fact, Cape Verde is a volcanic archipelago, and in some of them, we find mountains, the highest of which is Pico de Fogo, 2,829 meters (9,282 feet) high, on the island of Fogo: on the northern slopes of the island, there is even a bit of greenery. On the island of Santiago, where Praia is located, we find Pico da Antónia, 1,394 meters (4,573 feet), while in Santo Antao, we find Topo da Coroa, 1,979 meters (6,493 feet), and Pico da Cruz, 1,585 meters (5,200 feet), and finally, in São Nicolau, we find Monte Gordo, 1,312 meters (4,304 feet).

Barlavento Islands

As we mentioned, the northern islands (Santo Antão, São Vicente, Santa Luzia, São Nicolau, Ilha do Sal, Boa Vista) are a little cooler and more arid than the southern ones.

Mindelo

In Mindelo, on the northern (Barlavento) island of São Vicente, only 85 mm (3.3 in) of rain fall per year, with a maximum of 35 mm (1.4 in) in September. Here is the average precipitation.

In Praia, between July and September, the amount of sunshine drops to 6/7 hours per day, while on the northern islands, less affected by cloud banks, it remains a little higher (7/8 hours). Hurricanes

In the ocean to the south of Cape Verde, we find the area where hurricanes, the tropical cyclones of the Atlantic, start to form; after they are formed, they move towards the west or the northwest and head to the Caribbean. Some of them can brush the islands of Cape Verde, or they can directly hit them, especially the southern ones, although when they hit them, they are usually still in the stage of tropical depression, and typically reach hurricane intensity when they are in the open ocean. However, the period when Cape Verde has been affected by tropical depressions and cyclones in the past goes from early August to September 20 (once, it also occurred in early October), with a maximum from August 25 to September 15.

Best Time

Since they have a good climate, in theory, you can visit Cape Verde throughout the year, but it is necessary to make some clarifications. Lively breezes often blow, giving a feeling of cool in the winter months, especially during the days when the temperature is lower, and those who are sensitive to cold could need a jacket; moreover, the brisk wind can make the sea rough. This mainly occurs from January to March, and more often on the Barlavento than on the Sotavento islands. In winter, the Sotavento islands are therefore preferable.

Although there is often little rain even in the period that is in theory the wettest, from August (and sometimes July) to October, during which it might not rain for weeks, occasionally, there can be torrential rainfall, though short-lived, so this period can be avoided for safety. In addition, in this period, the sky is often cloudy, especially on the Sotavento islands. In August and September, the Barlavento islands are therefore preferable (also because of the lower risk of hurricanes).

So, all in all, you can choose the months of May, June, the first half of July, and November.

At noon, the sun is directly overhead twice a year, in late April and in mid-August, and it remains high in the sky from April to September: care must be taken to avoid sunburn, since cool breezes can prevent you from perceiving the intensity of the sun’s rays.

What to pack

In winter: bring light clothing, but also a light scarf for the wind, a sweatshirt or sweater, and a light jacket for the evening. When going to the mountains, bring sunscreen, hiking shoes, and a sweatshirt and a jacket for the evening; a warm jacket and a beanie for Pico de Fogo.

In summer: bring summer clothes, a light sweatshirt for the evening, comfortable shoes for excursions, and possibly a light raincoat in August and September. When going to the mountains, bring sunscreen, hiking shoes, and a sweatshirt and a light jacket for Pico de Fogo.

We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

Praia experiences extreme seasonal variation in the perceived humidity.

The muggier period of the year lasts for 9.3 months, from March 25 to January 2, during which time the comfort level is muggy, oppressive, or miserable at least 48% of the time. The month with the most muggy days in Praia is August, with 31.0 days that are muggy or worse.

The month with the fewest muggy days in Praia is February, with 9.4 days that are muggy or worse.

The beach/pool score (filled area), and its constituents: the temperature score (red line), the cloud cover score (blue line), and the precipitation score (green line).

Methodology

For each hour between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM of each day in the analysis period (1980 to 2016), independent scores are computed for perceived temperature, cloud cover, and total precipitation. Those scores are combined into a single hourly composite score, which is then aggregated into days, averaged over all the years in the analysis period, and smoothed.

Our cloud cover score is 10 for fully clear skies, falling linearly to 9 for mostly clear skies, and to 1 for fully overcast skies.

Our precipitation score, which is based on the three-hour precipitation centered on the hour in question, is 10 for no precipitation, falling linearly to 9 for trace precipitation, and to 0 for 0. 04 inches of precipitation or more.

Our tourism temperature score is 0 for perceived temperatures below 50°F, rising linearly to 9 for 65°F, to 10 for 75°F, falling linearly to 9 for 80°F, and to 1 for 90°F or hotter.

Our beach/pool temperature score is 0 for perceived temperatures below 65°F, rising linearly to 9 for 75°F, to 10 for 82°F, falling linearly to 9 for 90°F, and to 1 for 100°F or hotter.

Definitions of the growing season vary throughout the world, but for the purposes of this report, we define it as the longest continuous period of non-freezing temperatures (≥ 32°F) in the year (the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere, or from July 1 until June 30 in the Southern Hemisphere).

Temperatures in Praia are sufficiently warm year round that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss the growing season in these terms. We nevertheless include the chart below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures experienced throughout the year.

Praia is further than 200 kilometers from the nearest reliable weather station, so the weather-related data on this page were taken entirely from NASA’s MERRA-2 satellite-era reanalysis . This reanalysis combines a variety of wide-area measurements in a state-of-the-art global meteorological model to reconstruct the hourly history of weather throughout the world on a 50-kilometer grid.

The temperature and dew point estimates are corrected for the difference between the reference elevation of the MERRA-2 grid cell and the elevation of Praia, according to the International Standard Atmosphere .

All data relating to the Sun’s position (e.g., sunrise and sunset) are computed using astronomical formulas from the book, Astronomical Algorithms 2nd Edition , by Jean Meeus.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

Monthly weather in Cape Verde

CLIMATE, WEATHER

The Republic of Cape Verde is an archipelago in West Africa, located in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean and about 500 km west of Senegal. The archipelago includes 10 large islands (of which 9 are inhabited) and several uninhabited islets. The total land area is 4,033 km 2 . Also, the country covers more than 58,000 km 2 of the ocean, and the length of the coastline is about 1050 km. The population of the islands is 415,000 people. The main language is Portuguese.
Flat desert landscapes and white sandy beaches predominate in the east (Salom, Boavista and Mayo), while the western archipelago (Santo Antao, San Vicente, San Nicolao, Santiago, Fogo and San Antonio) has rugged mountain ranges with green valleys and volcanoes. The highest peak of the islands is Pico de Fogo on Fogo Island, at 2829 meters, which is still an active volcano. The shores on the eastern islands are shallow, with a gentle entry into the sea, while on the western islands coastal cliffs border the ocean, sometimes reaching 800 m in height.
The climate of the country is dry tropical. Instead of the classic 4 seasons, the Cape Verde Islands have only two. The sun shines 350 days a year, and the temperature ranges from +21°С to +29°С. Reviews of tourists about the weather in Cape Verde

Rested in Cape Verde at the end of July. It was my first trip to the ocean, and I was afraid that the water would be cold. As it turned out, I was afraid for nothing.

As soon as I got off the plane, I immediately noticed the dry air, it was somehow unusual, but interesting. There was no intense tiring heat. Yes, it’s hot, but not critical. The wind often blew and it seemed that the sun did not burn, but this is only at first glance! In no case should you forget to use a strong sunscreen, you can easily get burned.

The ocean water is gorgeous, surprisingly very warm.

I haven’t been there at other times of the year, but I liked my July vacation, the weather didn’t let me down.

We base comfort level on dew point, as it determines whether sweat will evaporate from the skin, cooling the body. A lower dew point makes you feel more dry, while a higher dew point makes you feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between day and night, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while temperatures may drop at night, a wet day usually gives way to a wet night.

Mindelo experiences extreme seasonal fluctuations in perceived humidity.

Temperature and dew point

There is only one weather station in our network, Cesária Évora Airport, suitable for use as a proxy for historical temperature and dew point data for Mindelo.

Being 10 kilometers from Mindelo, closer than our threshold of 150 kilometers, this station is considered close enough to be relied upon as the primary source of temperature and dew point data.

The station data have been corrected for the difference in altitude between the station and Mindelo in accordance with the International Standard Atmosphere, as well as the relative change in MERRA-2 satellite-era reanalysis between these two points.

Note that the station data themselves may have been subsequently supplemented by other nearby stations or MERRA-2 reanalysis.

Other data

All data related to the position of the Sun (such as sunrise and sunset) are calculated using astronomical formulas from Jean Mius’ Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd Ed. .

All other weather data, including cloudiness, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar energy flux, are taken from the MERRA-2 New Time Retrospective Analysis. This reanalysis combines various measurements over a wide area in a modern global meteorological model to reconstruct hourly weather history around the world on a 50 km grid.

Land use data are from the SHARE Global Land Cover Monitoring Network database published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Altitude data is from the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM), published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The names, locations and time zones of places and some airports are from the GeoNames Geographical Database.

We pay special attention to the fact that for a number of important data types we rely on reconstructions based on the MERRA-2 model. With huge advantages in temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have typical model errors, (2) use coarse sampling on a 50 km grid and therefore cannot reconstruct local variations in many microclimates, and (3) experiencing particular weather difficulties in some coastal areas, especially on smaller islands.

We also caution that our travel points are only as accurate as the data on which they are based, that the weather conditions in any particular place and at any time are unpredictable and changeable, and that points calculation reflects a certain set of preferences that may not coincide with preferences of the individual reader.
