Costa Calma is a small tourist resort in the south of Fuerteventura, which is close to some of the island’s most beautiful beaches. The Jandia Peninsula is the perfect place to go and explore massive unspoiled beaches and many locals will tell you that here you’ll find the best beaches in Fuerteventura. Costa Calma is mostly preferred by German tourists, but of course, you’ll meet here other nationalities as well. You’ll see that many signs here will say German bakery, German doctor etc. and even the radio is in German. So yes, this is an area preferred by German visitors, as opposed to the north of the island which is preferred by British tourists. 

But even if you choose another place to stay in Fuerteventura during your holiday, Costa Calma is well worth a visit and the area around it as well.

What To Do in Costa Calma – Places to visit and activities

The Jandia peninsula is renowned for its amazing beaches, and it’s for a very good reason. This area is also usually popular among surfers and kite surfers, as some of the best beaches for kite surfing are located in this part of the island.

1. Sotavento beach

Playa Sotavento is probably one of Fuerteventura’s best beaches and you can see it on many postcards and images depicting the island. With the high tide, it forms a massive lagoon that represents the main attraction of this place. It’s a kitesurfer’s dream as well as a photographer’s dream because the entire landscape is fascinating, the water has a turquoise color and it’s truly a unique sight. If you want to see Sotavento beach at it’s best, keep in mind that you should try to visit during high tide.

2. The African Market in Costa Calma

This market is on Wednesdays and Sunday and it’s worth going only if you are in the area. You will find the usual fake bags and watches, souvenirs and other objects that repeat themselves from stall to stall. Don’t forget to bargain if you want to buy something and be careful with your belongings.

3. Take Kitesurfing and Windsurfing Lessons 

If you’re a beginner, this is the perfect place to practice and take lessons. There are several schools in this area and you can have group lessons as well as private lessons, depends on your budget.

4. Fuerteventura Windsurfing World Championship 

As we said, the south of the island is the perfect place for water sports, which is why The Windsurfing championship takes place here on Playa Barca every July. Costa Calma is a great place to stay in the area if you want to be here during the competition.

5. Visit Oasis Park

If you’re on a family holiday, we have an entire list of things to do with the kids, but Oasis Park is probably the best place to visit and it is situated very close to Costa Calma. The kids will enjoy this day to the max, as the park is beautiful and well maintained, a really great day out for both adults and kids of all ages.

Oasis Park offers a free shuttle so it’s easy to get there even if you don’t have a rental car.

6. A visit to Morro Jable

Morro Jable is just a short drive away further south, about 30 km.

If you have a rental car you can stop at other amazing beaches on your way like Playa Mal Nombre and Playa Esquinzo.

7. A trip to Cofete

Cofete is our favorite beach in Fuerteventura

From Morro Jable, you can take a bus or you can drive yourself, although be warned that most rental cars don’t have insurance on dirt roads like the one that goes to Cofete. But the beach is well worth the effort of getting there, as it’s one of the most beautiful views you’ll ever get to see.

8. Mirador Punta Junquillo

This is a lookout point with a beautiful view of the beach and the ocean, although it is usually very windy. It is located next to the h20 beach Hotel in Costa Calma and it can be the destination for a nice walk in order to explore the resort.

The south of Fuerteventura is home to some of the island’s most famous and amazing beaches, so honestly, there are lots to explore in the area if you’re a person who loves spending time in the sun.

Besides Playa Sotavento, which we already mentioned, make sure to also visit Playa Mal Nombre and Playa de Esquinzo. Out of all the things to do in Costa Calma, exploring the coastline is always our top choice. There’s simply nothing better or more amazing than seeing those lovely landscapes and the way the beaches change with the tides.

We believe that Costa Calma is suited for people who love water sports and quiet & relaxing holidays, with a focus on nature. The best beaches are the ones outside the urban areas, so we encourage you to go out and discover all the beautiful treasures of the Jandia peninsula.

Each year, there’s a carnival organized in several towns in the municipality of Pajara, among which in Costa Calma as well. In 2020, the carnival in Costa Calma is happening on March 5th, under the theme Advertising.

Costa Calma

Costa Calma is the second largest holiday town in the south of Fuerteventura. One attraction of Costa Calma is the beautiful sandy beach, which is very suitable for families with children since the water is very flat. The town is quieter than Jandía or Corralejo but nevertheless there are many apartments, holiday flats and hotels. Costa Calma is a popular place with German tourists. You will meet almost no other nationalities.

Information about Costa Calma

“Costa Calma” means “quiet coast”; it is called like this due to its offshore winds and the low waves resulting from them.  

Costa Calma is situated at the northernmost point of the peninsula “Jandía”. (Attention – Jandía is the name for the tourist centre near Morro Jable but also for the entire peninsula of Fuerteventura!) Costa Calma lies on an isthmus; it’s only 4 km beeline to the west coast and thus to the other side of the island.   

The wind turbines of the wind park near Costa Calma are particularly remarkable. Due to the isthmus, there is a constant wind during the whole year.

If you go to Costa Calma, you will immediately notice the large wood of palm and pine trees on the left and right side of the road – especially since such a green oasis outside of hotels and holiday resorts is rare on Fuerteventura. The main road leads right through this palm forest and thus keeps a large part of the noise off from the rest of the town. The wood divides the town into two parts. On some road signs, you can still read Costa Calma’s former name “Cañada del Río”.

The town of Costa Calma consists of holiday flats, apartments, hotels, shopping centres and restaurants and is thus a pure holiday resort, built from about 1970. There is no historic town centre. In fact, no real centre is to be found at all – a “small town centre” is the small square opposite to the Taro Beach hotel.

Costa Calma belongs to the municipality of Pajara. The town is rather quiet – a fact which is not always negative.

The buildings in the central district, behind the “main beach”, are flat. In the newer districts in the south and north of Costa Calma, higher hotels have, unfortunately, been built.

The town’s main attraction, and probably the main reason for visiting Costa Calma, is the large, quiet bay with its clean sandy beach. The bay is about 1.5 km long and is the centre of the town.

From Costa Calma beach, you can hike along the beach to the south (Morro Jable) for about 21 km. Not far from Costa Calma beach starts Playa de Sotavento – a breath-taking beach scenery and at the same time an excellent surfing area. -> see beach hike

The beach is very suitable for children – mostly low waves and a clean beach with flat water. Behind the beach, there are apartments and hotels, which are not separated from the beach by an esplanade.

Shopping and restaurants

In Costa Calma, there are numerous shopping centres (Centro Comercial), which are spread throughout the whole town. In the shopping centres, you will find a mix of restaurants, supermarkets and different shops (souvenirs, clothes, drugstores, etc.).  

Some of the shopping centres are: C.C. Sotavento, C.C. El Palmeral (next to the petrol station), C.C. Botanico, C.C. Canada del Rio, C.C. Bahia, C.C. Bahia Calma, C. C. Costa Calma, etc.

There are just a few real top restaurants but those who are looking for one will find one. One of them is the “Galeria” with its sun terrace with sea view. 

For a small lunch bite we recommend the beach bars, which offer delicious starters and small main dishes.

Furthermore, there is a weekly market every Sunday from 12 noon. It is situated at the northern town exit.

Nightlife in Costa Calma is rather quiet. It takes place mainly in the shopping centres or in the hotels. After 10 p.m. you should not expect too much – nevertheless, there are some discos (e. g. Bounce in C.C. El Palmeral) which start at midnight. In the holiday flats, you will probably prefer sitting on your own balcony or patio and enjoy the evening mood.  

In Costa Calma, you will have no language difficulties (even if you don’t speak Spanish) since German is understood and spoken in most restaurants and shops. Many owners are Germans themselves. 

Bus/Taxi

There are sufficient bus stops. Bus schedules are to be found in island magazines, amongst others, or just ask the bus driver. From Costa Calma, there are bus connections to Esquinzo, Jandía/Morro Jable, La Lajita, La Pared, Tarajalejo, Gran Tarajal, Puerto del Rosario, Flughafen, Antigua, Tunieje and Pajara.

There are many taxi stands: there is a large taxi stand at the resort “Rio Sol”; another one is directly next to the police station.

History

Around 1970, the first houses were built along Costa Calma. Before that, the landscape was uninhabited and desert-like. Since 1984, when the bumpy road to Morro Jable was asphalted, tourism has developed quickly. From this time on, many hotels and apartment resorts have been built.

the gateway to the Sotavento beaches

Located in the southern municipality of Pájara, the Costa Calma resort is now one of Fuerteventura’s most important tourist destinations. Set at the top of the Jandía Peninsula—formerly an island in its own right, separated from Fuerteventura—Costa Calma is one of the island’s youngest inhabited areas, built during the tourism boom of the early 1970s.

Nowadays, with around 5,000 registered residents (and a floating population of 15,000 people all year-round), Costa Calma is an internationally renowned holiday destination. The resort is blessed with a series of surrounding beaches—commonly referred to as the Costa de Sotavento—and the beauty of the Jandía Natural Park in which it lies. On the other hand, owing to the constant trade winds that batter its coastline, the area is home to a large number of windsurfing and kitesurfing schools. Meanwhile, the Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura, a huge zoo located in the neighbouring town of La Lajita, is a guaranteed hit with the little ones.

For the icing on the cake to your time in this charming and isolated slice of southern Fuerteventura, we recommend a spot of stargazing from one of its several viewpoints or sampling authentic local cuisine in one of its many restaurants.

What to see and how to get to Costa Calma

The name Costa Calma—not to be confused with Majorca’s ‘Costa de la Calma’—ironically derives from the sea winds that batter the coastline throughout the year, creating small waves and the constant coming and going of sands from the nearby Jandía dunes.

Costa Calma lies 67 kilometres from Puerto del Rosario, the capital city of Fuerteventura. Easily reached along the main FV-2 motorway, Costa Calma is surrounded by palm trees, sand dunes and extensive white sandy beaches. The centre of the resort, meanwhile, offers a heterogeneous mix of imposing tourist apartments and hotels and a residential area of whitewashed bungalows. Whereas prior to 1970 Costa Calma was only home to disperse sets of humble houses, the area’s popularity amongst foreign tourists—particularly from Germany and United Kingdom—has done nothing more than increase the area’s accommodation options. The area’s leisure offerings are completed by a series of beachfront bars and restaurants, shopping centres and surf schools.

Costa Calma beaches, Sotavento

Without a shadow of doubt, Costa Calma’s beaches are its main attraction. In fact, many claim that these are some of Fuerteventura’s most beautiful beaches. Lying at the feet of the desert landscape of the Jandía Natural Park and facing out to the lashing winds of the vast Atlantic Ocean, the Costa Calma beaches are wild, changing and diverse.

Sotavento Beach

• Playa de Costa Calma: Lying alongside the resort of Costa Calma, this beach, which is approximately 2 kilometres long, is lined with hotels. It is the most accessible of all the Sotavento beaches, and therefore offers the widest range of services. The waves are pleasant despite the constant wind, lending itself to a peaceful swim. This makes the beach ideal for adults and children alike. However, as is the case with the area’s other beaches, these waters are often scattered with surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers, many of whom rent equipment from the surf school at the end of the beach. There are also two beachfront restaurants on this main beach.
• Playa Esmeralda (North and South): Heading south, the next beach along the coast is the Playa Esmeralda. As its name might suggest, this beach’s waters are awash with turquoise tones. This beach, which can be reached in under ten minutes by car, is surrounded by cliffs and the odd remote hotel. Depending on whether the tide is in or out, you may find the beach divided into two small bays. Lastly, a sunbed rental service and a small elevated beachfront restaurant allow us to continue watching the windsurfers from afar.

• Playa de la Barca and Playa del Risco del Paso: These two beaches are found even further south, combining to form the Sotavento beach. Notable for their special meteorological conditions, both beaches lend themselves particularly well to sailing-based water sports. The conditions are so favourable, in fact, that the Playa de la Barca has held the World Windsurfing and Kiteboarding Championship during the months of July and August since 1986. There are also small tourist resorts consisting of accommodation options and beachfront bars. However, these beaches are mainly famous for the way in which their appearance changes in accordance with the lunar tides. While they are usually long and deep, comprising kilometres of sand that can be enjoyed by walkers and runners alike, the fortnightly high tide leads to the formation of a small, wave-free lagoon in the middle of the sand bank. At the Playa del Risco del Paso there is a viewpoint from which you can clearly observe this fascinating phenomenon. Also, if you’re looking for a nudist beach, the southernmost part of the Playa del Risco del Paso is well secluded, and very popular amongst nudists.

Other things to do in Costa Calma

However, Costa Calma’s leisure activities are not limited to its beaches. As we mentioned earlier, the neighbouring town of La Lajita—just a 12-minute drive away—is home to Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura: one of the largest zoos in Spain, not to mention the Canary Islands. What originated in 1985 as a modest camel-back safari has gradually consolidated itself as an authentic tribute to savannah fauna: first with parrots, kangaroos and primates, and later with elephants, giraffes, hippos and sea lions. That’s without even mentioning the gigantic botanical garden, which holds various paths that allow you to explore Fuerteventura’s most exotic flora for yourself.

If you’re looking for nature in its purest form, behind us lies the Jandía Natural Park: home to 15,000 hectares of walkable terrain. This is formed by an arc of mountains open to the north, including the Pico de la Zarza: the island’s tallest mountain, standing at 800 metres above sea level. This is also the best stargazing location in all of Fuerteventura, with its isolation and altitude ensuring magnificent visibility of the Canarian skies.

The hotel was more like a 3*.
I have never seen internet for a fee.
All-inclusive meals remain the same.
flesh resembled plastic. Only one piece of cutlery was placed on the table.
when you were served a drink and you wanted another one, no one served you.
If everyone could promote their own drinks, that would be better.
staff in the restaurant were few and I rather felt sorry for them, they had a lot of work. The two managers at the door couldn’t help them and just looked at them.
I would like to give a big shout out to the waiter Edgar, great performance for his age. I feel like I’m not very good with the team. Compared to the Barcelo Hotel in Castillo, this was a very below average hotel and staff performance. Managers should learn from them. Fuerteventura is a terrible place, but I cannot recommend the hotel.

animation doesn’t do anything wrong and there should be more solo singers instead of bands just exploding. Disco more than 60s 70s 80s music is not just an actual thing.

Very nice place, the staff is very friendly and the rooms are very clean and the beds are super comfortable. The hotel has great gardens and great pools! What I liked is that it is also very cat friendly and that there is a feeding place for a controlled cat colony from El Capitan (TS Association in place)!
Food and breakfast were consistently good and varied for the size of the hotel. The only downside is that you have to pay for Extra Wi-Fi, which isn’t too bad in itself, but you expect it to run smoothly. But this is whining at a high level 😉
We will definitely be back!

Overall a great holiday, especially since only a few hotels were open due to the lockdown. If you want peace and quiet, more of an adult hotel advertised, but for families it’s really great! For us it was only an alternative hotel, but we were still very satisfied. The room and cleanliness are excellent, the food is unfortunately not great. But a week is always possible!

We stayed from 9.7. — 16.7. In this hotel and it was just wonderful. We had a nice double room with an extra bed for a child and a beautiful sea view. The Corona concept was implemented in an exemplary manner and we felt very comfortable. Very attentive friendly staff who tried to beat the thin ceiling of the staff. Nice all inclusive, good drinks, unobtrusive animation, good service even in rental car delivery, delicious food, wifi in lobby and ground floor is sufficient, fabulous well maintained well maintained facility with mega pool. We knew it wasn’t right on the beach, but the 2 minute walk to Costa Calma beach was no problem. The beach is a hammer and you had it almost to yourself. We will return and recommend it. If you are looking for sun, pool and beach this is the place to be.

Traveling as a couple on the 12th day of stay. The hotel as a whole could use a refurbishment to fully deserve a 4* otherwise just a 3* hotel. Rooms are comfortable with good mattresses but twin beds for couples without any “connector” so they don’t fall apart not 4* level. The view from the room to the ‘right wing’ is not spectacular when in front of the entrance. If you get 1st floor, don’t take them, you will end up in the basement with no view at all. 2nd floor is not much better anyway. The last day we had a little surprise outside the hall, see the photos, I hope this was an isolated incident. Fuerteventura is all about luxury hotels, so don’t count on elaborate meals and also to cater to the masses of people in the hotel, so you won’t avoid a repeat in a few days. Charging people for drinks at dinner is outrageous and insulting to guests. I could understand paying for expensive wines or other alcoholic drinks, but drinks and juices or coffee? Funny. As usual in hive hotels, the number of sun loungers and umbrellas was not enough, which resulted in no place to relax at the pool and I’m not the type to run to the pool at 6am to “reserve” a spot for an after breakfast. Important: during our stay, the lower level “beach” and water cascades were closed, so even less space to relax on site. Nearby beaches make up for this, but this is within walking distance of the hotel.

It seems that some of the servants are simply not satisfied with their work, and the rest of the physical ones do not have time to serve everyone. The service staff is clearly not enough for such a number of guests. Plus, a day before departure, a message came that the lagoon with sea water was being closed for repairs. The hotel looks good, but drinks are not included in half board, hardly power sockets, internet is paid extra and also safe. The personal in the restaurant is mostly busy with being busy, not customer oriented. Tables are not cleared while you are eating, tea has to be repeated twice for a joint shutdown, coffee is hardly consumable, bacon is baked very poorly (black or doubled), even the coffee machine cannot make even an average quality cappuccino. The staff is always friendly and competent, although the working conditions in the Canary Islands and accommodation in the SAR are rather catastrophic. It should be made one pool for year-round operation also once clean, it should be clear. There are fairly evasive water surfaces. I didn’t like that they wanted to charge us $25 for using the small safe that was in our room. I have never been accused of using that before, this was a first for me.
I also don’t like that they have a dress code for men but not the same for women in the restaurant. In the evenings, men are only allowed in the restaurant with long pants, but women are allowed with shorts (a bit discriminatory).
This hotel looks very nice and the food is kind of very good, but the atmosphere is very dead and hospital like.
This hotel does not have access to a swimmable sandy beach. Very noisy air conditioner.
Most of the restaurant staff could learn to be a little more polite when speaking to guests. Some of them sounded quite rude and aggressive (could be related to the language).
I like the piano bar in the reception area. This is the only place we could hang out for an hour or so after dinner (wish it was longer).

Nice hotel with very good services.
The restaurant is varied and very good. During meals, you can dine on the terrace.
There is no access to the beach as the hotel is facing the rocks. So they created an artificial lagoon and a beach of all beauty!
One of the two outdoor pools heated to 27°.
The rooms are very clean but the style is a little dated. This is largely offset by good bedding.
I highly recommend this hotel as it is very quiet and very beautiful.

Stayed here 5 times. We won’t be back unless they improve their entertainment from a so so pianist who doesn’t sing or play any new songs, also evening entertainment for kids only. The food at the hotel is excellent. The gardens are spacious and beautiful and kept prestine. The hotel is also kept impeccably. Don’t pay for wifi as it only works intermittently, although there is one place you can get it under flag of convenience, outside of the restaurant. The walk to the village is not worth the effort, it’s the pits. It needs to be leveled and rebuilt.

Good hotel with a beautiful outdoor area. Best hotel on this side of the island. The food is 50/50, everyone will find n to eat. Cons: for sports activities like mini golf, volleyball, tennis you have to pay. Also for wifi you have to pay if you want to have a signal everywhere your number also. The rooms are different but I have one of the worst in the entire hotel with no view and no balcony…
A big plus for a live piano concert every evening and the possibility to rent a car at the hotel.

Excellent hotel , very good staff. The object is excellent design. Unfortunately no shopping facilities in the area (only reachable by bus) the environment is very dry, only this hotel is in the middle of nowhere. A bus and a small supermarket are about 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel.
Dad’s hotel is great, but the style and furnishings are very good.
Salt water lagoon is an excellent analogue for a non-existent sandy beach.
With the right shoes, you can also get into the sea.

The room we had was nice, clean, with a sea view and a balcony.
There were only 2 chairs in the room, but who is already sitting in the room in the weather?!
The staff is very friendly and very helpful.
The waiter at the bar was top notch.
Unfortunately only free access to the room, which is not at all in this day and age!
When you take a shower in the afternoon there is a strong fluctuation between the skin hardened and undercooled, which can become really dangerous for children!
The pools are also very well maintained but not heated, too bad.
It was really too boring at the pool after half a day… Anyone who likes this is in good hands here.
The food was ok but lacked the sophistication of the Canary Islands.

Good hotel with great pool and outdoor facilities.
Varied buffet breakfast and dinner. Every evening there is another culinary theme here. The food I have found is always delicious. Drinks in the evening buffet and in the bar are not favorable, but still good (eg 4, €10 yeast wheat, 2, €5 KL. Bottle of water) the rooms and the entire hotel complex are always very clean and well maintained.
2-3 animators make 5 assignments during the day for about 45 minutes of animation. (water gymnastics, archery, air rifle shooting, tennis, beach volleyball, etc.)
WiFi and safe included in the Extra room (secure €17 and WLAN €7 per week).
However, both are not absolutely necessary as free Wi-Fi is available in the hotel lobby and the room doors make for a fairly secure impression (solid check card blocking).
The little shop has everything you need – of course, more expensive than a 20-minute walk from the Costa Argument (1 liter bottle of water 1, €65, in the village depending on the supermarket 0, €65 oder0, €35) .
There are two completely passable artificial turf/quartz sand tennis courts (€8 hour, €3 racket) a very good minigolf course with 2x 18 hours of artificial turf (€3/person) and beach volleyball courts.

Great hotel, beautiful grounds and pools. Friendly staff, food was amazing and it comes from a very fussy eater.
The rooms are a good size, cleaned on a daily basis and the hotel, grounds, pools etc were all cleaned to a high standard.
Guests can relax in the spa or work out in the gym, then unwind in the piano bar or dance in the entertainment bar.
Location is distance from the center but why should you leave they have everything you need in a hotel.

Very good hotel. I recommend to anyone heading to Fuerteventura, Costa Calma. Excellent location. It has small issues such as no direct access to the beach and so many tourists cooking is a bit ridiculous. The rooms are clean and done every day and the animation is done by the most positive and strongest girl I have ever met. I give four because there is room for improvement and I am sure that the hotel staff will try to improve them.

Very good stay. The front desk staff are welcoming, as are the bartenders and the women of the room. The waiters are not very attentive. We eat very well, the buffet varies with fruits, vegetables and many other things. Pools are the best! Might be missing animations.
