Shopping in Fuerteventura – A guide for all you need to know

El Campanario on market day in Corralejo

The shopping experience in Fuerteventura has changed a lot in the last few years, with more big brands  coming to the market and new stors opening all over the island. From shopping center, to local shops and markets, now the locals and tourists as well have access to various products and brands, some at better prices compares to mainland Europe.

Shopping in Corralejo

Corralejo offers a good shopping experience espcially for tourists, but remember that prices for food items can be higher in tourist resorts compared to the rest of the island.

Supermarkets

Corralejo has several supermarkets: Hiperdino, Supermercados Inpescasa and Eurospar. It should be easy to find one close to where you are staying. There is also a big Mercadona in the south of the resort, near the Bahia Azul villas.

Shopping centers in Corralejo

C. C. Las Palmers

This commercial center is located on the main shopping street in Corralejo and it has a free underground parking.

There are some clothing brands: Zara, Mango etc, a sports shop, a Padilla supermarket and a few smaller shops.

Las Palmers is open every day of the week, including Sundays, from 10:00 to 22:00.

El Campanario

This shopping center is further from the town center, but it’s really popular especially on Sundays, when there’s a craft market going on.

El Campanario, true to its name, has a bell tower where you can go up to admire the view. Just avoid going to the top on the hour (for example 12:00, 13:00 etc) because the bell rings at that time and it can be really noisy.

El Campanario has an underground parking as well and there’s a Hiperdino supermarket inside, as well as around 30 other shops (both local shops and international brands), plus some cafes and restaurants, some with really nice food.

Markets in Fuerteventura

Every resort in Fuerteventura and almost every bigger town/village has its own market day and you can go and visit some of them to buy souvenirs, jewellery or just to look around. You can see more details in our dedicated article to markets in Fuerteventura

Shopping in Puerto del Rosario

The capital of Fuerteventura offers also the best opportunities for shopping, but it always depends on what you after to buy.

CC Las Rotondas

Las Rotondas Shopping Center is the largest commercial center on the island, with a large Hiperdino supermarket and 2 floors full of shops, plus one floor serving as a food court.

You can find here the usual Spanish clothing brands: Zara, Bershka, Stradivarius etc, plus C&A also a cinema (good if you understand Spanish).

Las Rotondas is closed on Sundays.

In Puerto del Rosario you can find also the only Lidl in Fuerteventura, which is easy to get to if you have a car. Across the street from Lidl there’s an industrial park and a large Chinese shop, where you find a lot of knick knacks at good prices.

Puerto del Rosario also has the pedestrian street with some local shops, but these shops usually close during the lunch hours (siesta) and then reopen in the evenings and the restaurants on the street as well.

Puerto del Rosario is the best place to come for shopping especially for residents in Fuerteventura, because here you will find also furniture shops and other types of specialized shops that you can’t find the resorts.

Shopping in Caleta de Fuste

Since Caleta de Fuste is located very close to the capital it is fairly easy to go to Puerto del Rosario if you have to do some major shopping. But for visitors the shops that you will find in the resort will be just enough for most things you’ll need: some groceries maybe, toiletries and snacks.

CC Atlantico

Atlantico Shopping Center may seem rather small, but it has a few clothing shops and jewellery stores. There’s also a good Spar supermarket, which is rather useful for grocery shopping. It is open every day of the week, including on Sundays.

Caleta de Fuste also has 2 weekly markets, so if you’re interested in in that please check our dedicated article linked above.

Besides the commercial center you will also find a lot of small shops with the usual souvenirs and a lot of chinese and indian merchandise, so look carefully before buying somethings, as most things you will be able to find repeatedly in many shops but at drastically different prices: example – the same beach towel can range between 3 to 6 euros, depending on where you buy it.

Shopping in Morro Jable

Unfortunately in the south of the island you won’t find as many shopping opportunities compared to Caleta de Fuste or Corralejo.

There were a few shopping malls built, but some of them where abandoned during the financial crisis and haven’t recovered yet.

There’s also a weekly market and some local shops and souvenir shops in the old town and the pedestrian area of Morro Jable.

Shopping for perfumes and cosmetics in Fuerteventura

Perfumes and brand cosmetics can be cheaper in the Canary Islands compared to the UK and the rest of mainland Europe.

Fundgrube is a popular store chain that sells perfumes, make-up and cosmetics and you will find their shops in all the large Canary Islands.

Fundgrube stores in Fuerteventura:
  • Palm Garden in the town of Jandia
    Avda. del Saladar s/n
    Locales 2-9
    Jandía, 35625
  • Las Palmeras in Corralejo
    Centro Comercial Las Palmeras
Avda. Nuestra Sra. del Carmen, Local 5
    Corralejo
  • Campanario inside the El Campanario shopping Center in Corralejo
    Calle Hierro, 1
    Centro Comercial El Campanario
    Corralejo
Shopping for electronics in Fuerteventura

We would advise that you don’t buy expensive electronics products while on holiday on the island, as sometimes the prices are larger compared to mainland Europe and there’s also the question of authenticity.

Don’t buy electronics such as phone, cameras etc from Indian shops or small street shops. Many of the products are not authentic and you should be suspicious if their price is much lower compared to the usual price elsewhere.

Cosmo Shopping Centre is located in Morro Jable, Fuerteventura.

Morro Jable is located in the south and is one of the most popular tourist resorts on Fuerteventura. It’s very picturesque, the buildings are white and residential houses stretch from the town centre down to the beach. It’s also home to a port, where you can take a ferry to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, or Santa Cruz in Tenerife. Primarily a fishing village, each July the locals celebrate the festival of La Virgen del Carmen the patron saint of fishermen. Morro Jable is home to the annual international wind surfing championships, and has some amazing beaches.

Playa del Matorral is one of Fuerteventura’s protected natural spaces. It is located close to Morro Jable, and the northernmost part of this area attracts attention because of its salt marshes. It is home to the unusual plant known as Suaeda vera. Rare bird enthusiasts will be thrilled to see the Canary Houbara Bustard here.

The beach here is simply stunning, it is perfect for swimming and an array of bars, cafés, and restaurants are located close by.

In general Playa del Matorral makes for the ideal holiday destination.

Costa Calma on Fuerteventura – Topography including position plan and island map

Costa Calma

Costa Calma is the second largest holiday town in the south of Fuerteventura. One attraction of Costa Calma is the beautiful sandy beach, which is very suitable for families with children since the water is very flat. The town is quieter than Jandía or Corralejo but nevertheless there are many apartments, holiday flats and hotels. Costa Calma is a popular place with German tourists. You will meet almost no other nationalities.

Map of Costa Calma

Information about Costa Calma

“Costa Calma” means “quiet coast”; it is called like this due to its offshore winds and the low waves resulting from them.

Costa Calma is situated at the northernmost point of the peninsula “Jandía”. (Attention – Jandía is the name for the tourist centre near Morro Jable but also for the entire peninsula of Fuerteventura!) Costa Calma lies on an isthmus; it’s only 4 km beeline to the west coast and thus to the other side of the island.

The wind turbines of the wind park near Costa Calma are particularly remarkable. Due to the isthmus, there is a constant wind during the whole year.

View of Costa Calma

If you go to Costa Calma, you will immediately notice the large wood of palm and pine trees on the left and right side of the road – especially since such a green oasis outside of hotels and holiday resorts is rare on Fuerteventura. The main road leads right through this palm forest and thus keeps a large part of the noise off from the rest of the town. The wood divides the town into two parts. On some road signs, you can still read Costa Calma’s former name “Cañada del Río”.

The town of Costa Calma consists of holiday flats, apartments, hotels, shopping centres and restaurants and is thus a pure holiday resort, built from about 1970. There is no historic town centre. In fact, no real centre is to be found at all – a “small town centre” is the small square opposite to the Taro Beach hotel.

Sotavento shopping centre, opposite to Taro Beach hotel

Costa Calma belongs to the municipality of Pajara. The town is rather quiet – a fact which is not always negative.

The buildings in the central district, behind the “main beach”, are flat. In the newer districts in the south and north of Costa Calma, higher hotels have, unfortunately, been built.

Costa Calma beach

The town’s main attraction, and probably the main reason for visiting Costa Calma, is the large, quiet bay with its clean sandy beach. The bay is about 1.5 km long and is the centre of the town.

You can also have a snack on Costa Calma beach

From Costa Calma beach, you can hike along the beach to the south (Morro Jable) for about 21 km. Not far from Costa Calma beach starts Playa de Sotavento – a breath-taking beach scenery and at the same time an excellent surfing area. -> see beach hike

Playa de Sotavento – very close to Costa Calma

The beach is very suitable for children – mostly low waves and a clean beach with flat water. Behind the beach, there are apartments and hotels, which are not separated from the beach by an esplanade.

You will find further detailed information about Costa Calma beach here on our web sites: -> Costa Calma beach

Shopping and restaurants

In Costa Calma, there are numerous shopping centres (Centro Comercial), which are spread throughout the whole town. In the shopping centres, you will find a mix of restaurants, supermarkets and different shops (souvenirs, clothes, drugstores, etc.).

Some of the shopping centres are: C.C. Sotavento, C.C. El Palmeral (next to the petrol station), C.C. Botanico, C.C. Canada del Rio, C.C. Bahia, C.C. Bahia Calma, C.C. Costa Calma, etc.

Entrance to the shopping centre El Palmeral

There are just a few real top restaurants but those who are looking for one will find one. One of them is the “Galeria” with its sun terrace with sea view.

For a small lunch bite we recommend the beach bars, which offer delicious starters and small main dishes.

Furthermore, there is a weekly market every Sunday from 12 noon. It is situated at the northern town exit.

Nightlife in Costa Calma is rather quiet. It takes place mainly in the shopping centres or in the hotels. After 10 p.m. you should not expect too much – nevertheless, there are some discos (e. g. Bounce in C.C. El Palmeral) which start at midnight. In the holiday flats, you will probably prefer sitting on your own balcony or patio and enjoy the evening mood.

In Costa Calma, you will have no language difficulties (even if you don’t speak Spanish) since German is understood and spoken in most restaurants and shops. Many owners are Germans themselves.

Bus/Taxi

There are sufficient bus stops. Bus schedules are to be found in island magazines, amongst others, or just ask the bus driver. From Costa Calma, there are bus connections to Esquinzo, Jandía/Morro Jable, La Lajita, La Pared, Tarajalejo, Gran Tarajal, Puerto del Rosario, Flughafen, Antigua, Tunieje and Pajara.

There are many taxi stands: there is a large taxi stand at the resort “Rio Sol”; another one is directly next to the police station.

History

Around 1970, the first houses were built along Costa Calma. Before that, the landscape was uninhabited and desert-like. Since 1984, when the bumpy road to Morro Jable was asphalted, tourism has developed quickly. From this time on, many hotels and apartment resorts have been built.

The best markets in Fuerteventura

Open-air markets are a great opportunity to discover local products, mingle with locals and purchase an original and traditional souvenir to remind you of your trip to Fuerteventura. Besides offering wonderful beaches and landscapes, the oldest island of the Canary Islands archipelago is also a fantastic shopping destination. The prices are cheaper than in other Spanish cities, and you will unearth handcrafted products and traditional delicacies which only exist in this jewel of the Atlantic.

Hippy flea markets and traditional markets in Fuerteventura

The good thing about markets is that they offer all sorts of products, meaning you will always find something that you like. The only downside is that they don’t usually open seven days a week. As such, you should plan your visit in advance to make sure you go when the market is open. Don’t worry, as you will find markets all over the island of Fuerteventura. We’ve made a list of Fuerteventura’s most authentic markets, allowing you to plan your trip accordingly and take home a fantastic souvenir.

Markets in Corralejo

The town of Corralejo, in northern Fuerteventura, is home to three different markets. The first is held at the Centro Comercial Campanario, comprising a traditional Canarian market selling local products and handcrafted goods. It opens on Thursdays and Sundays, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The same shopping centre holds a flea market every Saturday, where you can browse a selection of second-hand items.

The second market, held in the Acua Water Park (formerly known as the Parque Acuático Baku), sells all kinds of products, handcrafted goods and accessories. It opens every Tuesday and Friday, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

The third market is Paseos del Arte, held in a Bohemian ‘hippy’ setting that is bursting with art. This market is held every Friday on Calle Churruca, and every Saturday in the pedestrianised area outside the church, open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

Lajares artisan market

The town of Lajares, close to Corralejo, hosts the Mercado Artesanal de Los Lajares artisan market. This is an open-air craft market with all kinds of stalls, selling everything from handcrafted items to typical products of the area. You can also find handcrafted jewellery, items made from recycled materials, handbags, accessories and local products. This market holds children’s activities on the first Saturday of every month, with clowns and jugglers. On the second and final Saturday of every month, meanwhile, it also holds live music performances. This market is held every Saturday in the Plaza del Pueblo, open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Mercado de las Tradiciones in La Oliva

The town of La Oliva, located in inland Fuerteventura, is home to beautiful spots of ochre hues and earthy tones. The Mercado de las Tradiciones provides the perfect excuse to visit the area. This market is held in the Casa de los Coroneles, a historic stately home that has been renovated and reconverted into a cultural venue. You can find a huge variety of local goods, although it is famous for its typical calados majoreros (handmade needlework of Fuerteventura), oil paintings of the island’s landscapes, incredible spicy mojo sauces and traditional jams. If you visit this market, you will also find handmade jewellery; products of wood, silver and leather; and a selection of fruits and vegetables. This market is held every Tuesday and Friday, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Markets in Puerto del Rosario

Puerto del Rosario, the capital city of the island of Fuerteventura, is home to several different markets. Firstly, there is a municipal market where locals do their daily shopping. Secondly, there is the Mercado Agrícola de la Biosfera, offering a huge variety of organic products and original and creative handcrafted goods. This market is held every Saturday on the Avenida de la Constitución, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Markets in Puerto del Rosario

Close to Puerto del Rosario is the Mercado de la Vega de Tetir, renowned for its ceramics, typical needlework of the Canary Islands, palm-based products, aloe vera products, etc., and a wide range of typical local dishes. This market is held every three months, on the second Sunday of March, June, September and December in the Plaza Pública de Tetir, open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Markets in Caleta de Fuste

Caleta de Fuste, in eastern Fuerteventura, is home to two markets: a handicrafts market and another market selling a broader range of products. The handicrafts market is held in the Plaza Pública de Caleta de Fuste, opening every Friday from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

The other market is located next to the Caleta de Fuste bus stop, held every Tuesday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It also sells handcrafted products (although it doesn’t specialise in this type of goods), as well as a wide range of jewellery and accessories.

Costa Calma market

If you head to Costa Calma in the Jandía Peninsula, you will find the Mercado Africano de Costa Calma. This market isn’t renowned for selling high-quality products, as it specialises in the sale of counterfeit goods. However, you might be pleasantly surprised! The Marroquinería Africana is a good place to buy a souvenir of your holiday. If you come to this market, you will see how the traders and customers barter like in typical ‘bazars’. It is open every Wednesday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, on the Avenida Hapag Lloyd opposite the P&P.

Costa Calma market

La Lajita artisan market

The town of La Lajita, near to Costa Calma, is home to the Mercadillo Artesano de Oasis Park. All the products are 100% handmade and organic: fruits, vegetables, smoked fish, goat’s cheese and handcrafted products. This agricultural, handicraft and gastronomic market is one of Fuerteventura’s best markets in terms of the variety and quality of its products. This market is held every Sunday from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Morro Jable market

In the town of Morro Jable in southern Fuerteventura, you will find a market that serves everything from handcrafted products to counterfeit goods. We recommend browsing the selection of leather handbags and handmade goods, as you may find something special to take home with you. This market is held in the Centro Comercial Cosmo shopping centre every Monday and Thursday, from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Even if you’re not a massive shopping lover, strolling between the stalls of the markets in Fuerteventura is a hugely gratifying experience. It’s also a great opportunity to talk with the craftsmen and to sample the delicious homemade delicacies sold at the stalls.

      Rest time –

    • Advantages: Unfortunately, I can’t write anything about the hotel itself. When I arrived there, I was informed that due to the rain that had passed the day before, a certain number of rooms were flooded, and there were no vacant rooms in good condition. I was offered to move to another hotel, where a room had already been booked for me. The incident itself is unpleasant, BUT! We must give them their due, they offered me to move to a hotel, which, although located a little further from the center, is in itself a class higher – both in price, and in territory, and in terms of rooms. Moreover, I don’t know if this is a coincidence or not, but in another hotel they gave me a room in accordance with the wishes that I made when booking – a quiet place, the top floor.

      Rest time –

    • Advantages: Pretty convenient location, everything is within walking distance, although the town itself is not big. Near a supermarket. 15 minutes to the beach. We were with a car and drove to the beach outside the city. Gorgeous beaches near Riu.
Parking is free next to the hotel.
A large room with a living-dining room and a separate bedroom, a kitchen, probably convenient for a family with children, dishes, a kettle, a toaster, a stove, a refrigerator with a freezer.

Cons: Everything is old! There was an unbearable smell in the bathroom! The towels are brown so you don’t have to worry about washing.
There is no sound insulation, you sleep like on the street, not to mention opening the window.
Internet, safe, TV remote – for a fee!

      Rest time –

    • Advantages: Qualified staff at the reception. Quite a comfortable apartment complex. For travelers who do not like to go far, there is everything inside the complex for a reasonable fee. Nearby there is a shopping center with shops, restaurants, cafes. City beach fifteen minutes leisurely walk.

Disadvantages: No hot (or even warm) water in the morning!

The island of Fuerteventura owes its name to the almost unceasing year-round
wind, it also made it a favorite destination for surfers from all over the world. He
as if created for a quiet relaxing holiday – there are very few discos
and clubs, but many beaches and options for active entertainment. 3rd by
the largest resort of the island – Caleta de Fuste – is located in the middle of the eastern
coast of Fuerteventura. Due to the proximity of the airport, it is very popular.

    Caleta del Fuste
    – a resort with a developed infrastructure. There is a supermarket, restaurants, bars with
live music, multiplex cinema and bowling alley. Thirteen kilometers from
Puerto del Rosario airport, among the sand dunes, picturesque fishing
villages, in 2002 the Elba Palace Golf hotel was built in a strict
according to the traditional Canarian style. It is part of the Hoteles Elba chain and
is the club house of the Fuerteventura Club, the best golf establishment in the Canary Islands. Exactly
    that’s why he attracts fans
    this aristocratic entertainment.

The refined, aristocratic nature of the game also determined the appearance of the hotel. Foyer
welcomes guests with a magnificent design with solid wooden furniture and
stone walls, tiled floors and a large wrought-iron chandelier. The hotel is a little
more than sixty spacious apartments. Standard rooms are decorated
in the Canarian style with a predominance of terracotta tones. Views from the terraces
ocean and golf course. The suites also offer an exclusive design and
spacious living room. Each of the accommodations has air conditioning, satellite
    television, telephone. Fully
the bathrooms are fitted with double sinks, bidets and hair dryers. AT
depending on the category of the room, a separate bath or shower is installed
    cabin.

There is also a spacious conference room and a shopping centre. If you need to clean up before an important meeting or a romantic dinner, your
services are offered by the beauty salon and hairdresser of the Elba Hotel.

    Outside of play
golf, the hotel offers tennis courts, swimming pools, aerobics classes. Scuba diving is the most popular
entertainment on the island after windsurfing. Both jobs deserve to be
let go of the club for a while, and deep-sea fishing from the side of the boat away from
the shores are a real male occupation, absolutely unpredictable in terms of catch. Never
you never know who will get hooked: shark, barracuda or the most valuable trophy – blue marlin.

The beautiful courtyard of the hotel offers a full
relaxation and a pleasant meal among tall palm trees. The bar is open for breakfast with international cuisine and the same fresh tropical fruits.
It is a pleasure to dine at the Saint Andrews restaurant, which specializes in local and international dishes, has a large collection of Spanish and
other fine wines. Many of them are perfectly set off by the local mahorero cheese from
goat milk, which is produced by hand and has earned worldwide fame for its
unique taste and aroma. The meal is accompanied by the sounds of the piano. in Piano
Bar is a pleasure to sit in good company with original cocktails,
    soft drinks and alcoholic drinks.

    The ocean beckons
guests with their own waves and a chance to soak up the beach, to which the Elba Palace Golf & Vital Hotel provides a shuttle service. Although the coast around the resort is rocky, but
in Caleta del Fuste itself, an artificial and safe gently sloping beach is equipped,
located in a cozy bay, and protected from waves and strong winds
