Visiting four islands in the Canaries presents opportunities to discover some of the greatest sights and experiences that this sun-kissed archipelago has to offer. What’s more, you’ll also get to be part of the ‘Fred. Olsen Fleet in Funchal’ event, joining guests and crew from all four Fred. Olsen ships for an unforgettable day of celebration, on which Balmoral, Borealis, Bolette and Braemar will dock alongside each other in Madeira’s capital. On this very special occasion, you’ll get to enjoy fantastic live entertainment and events; get to take part in exciting activities; tuck-in to delicious, specially prepared menus; visit the other ships in the fleet, to explore and meet up with guests and crew you may know from previous cruises; and much more. Away from all the festivities, there are chances to discover Madeira’s many highlights, from its botanical gardens and picturesque walking trails to natural wonders such as Cabo Girao sea cliff, too.[ReadMore]
During your time in the Canaries, every moment spent exploring ashore will be memorable; plenty of highlights await as you visit four islands on consecutive days. Up first is Gran Canaria, where spectacular beaches such as the oasis-like sands of Maspalomas may tempt you into a few hours of relaxation, before its on to Tenerife, for a chance to explore Mount Teide – the Canaries’ most famous volcanic site. You’ve opportunities to explore verdant forests and seek out volcanic wonders aplenty La Palma and La Gomera, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, too. Uncovering the Olsen family’s links to these islands also makes for an insightful experience, be it at La Gomera’s Hotel Jardin Tecina or the mystical Pyramids of Güímar on Tenerife. Before and after your island-based adventures, discover the delights of mainland Spanish and Portuguese cities too; a visit to Cádiz is a chance to seek-out this Andalusian gem’s ancient highlights, while there’s centuries of rich maritime history to uncover in Lisbon.

Enjoyed cruise, but very disappointed about Kiel Canal’s omission.
We love Fred Olsen cruises, and the crew onboard Balmoral are a total asset to the company.

Superb staff and crew
Can’t fault the service and staff aboard. We were in a disabled cabin due to an accident before our cruise and from the moment we arrived on the ship, nothing was a problem to the staff

A great way to spend my 70th birthday!
The staff on board Balmoral were amazing. Anyone you met gave a smile and a good morning or hello. It was my 70th birthday while on board and they certainly spoiled me. From a champagne breakfast to a cake and birthday wishes at dinner, and a free photo I was overwhelmed! The entertainment team presented fantastic shows and were often around to help during the day. Boogie in the Morning Lite kept us entertained in the evenings too.

Service Rating:
The cruise suffered significant changes to the planned itinerary due to “technical issues” restricting MS Balmoral to sail at half speed. There was a reluctance of the personnel to elaborate on this description at any time when asked.
On our call to Gdansk, the crew member who accompanied the shuttle bus into the city on being asked for directions into the city centre, abruptly responded by stating he hadn’t been in Gdansk for 12 years, pointed vaguely away from the bus then disappeared
The scheduled call at Sassnitz was shortened to half a day instead of a full day. The shuttle bus from Sassnitz’-Mukran where the ship docked into Sassnitz City was shown in the Daily Times to drop off/pick up in Stralsunderstrasse/Bahnhofstrasse. It actually ran to the fishing harbour down at the beach which was 0. 8km away from the town centre.
The most significant disappointment to ourselves and many others was the ommission of the transit of the Kiel Canal. At no time was there any mention of not going to the Kiel Canal made (the cabin TV screen continued to display it ,both in text and on the itinerary map). Instead the ship made a short call at Copenhagen.
Apart from the above the cruise was very enjoyable, entertainment was generally good ,albeit not quite as good as on an earlier cruise in May on Borealis.
I should add that our stewardess Siwapond was excellent and went out of her way to look after us.

Service Rating:
Our departure from Rosyth was so smooth and efficient. We enjoyed all the ports of call, especially Klaipeda and Gdansk, and the lectures were excellent. The staff and crew were so pleasant, friendly and efficient and the food was lovely! The only disappointment was not going through the Keil Canal but we realised that these things happen.

Windy Conditions Prompt Multiple Madeira-Bound Flights To Divert To The Canary Islands

The strong winds reached an estimated speed of 66 km/h.

Easter Sunday was certainly blowing in full force as two flights bound for Madeira Airport had to divert to Lanzarote and Tenerife South instead due to strong winds that reached speeds of up to 66 km/h (41 mph).
Unable to land
TUI fly (Germany) operated the first of the two flights. Flight number X3 2853 was its service from Dusseldorf to Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport in Madeira, which departed Germany at 06:35 and was due to land in Madeira at 09:10 yesterday morning.
Registered as D-AMAX, the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft had circled near Madeira Airport to wait out the strong winds. Unfortunately, it was eventually diverted to Arrecife Airport on the Canary island of Lanzarote, landing an hour after the decision to divert was made.
The plane diverted to Tenerife, but made it to Madeira later the same day. Photo:
FlightRadar24.com
Having waited on the ground for around two hours, the 737 MAX took off from Arrecife to attempt another landing at Madeira. This time around, it was safe and successful, but it cost everyone onboard a total delay of four and a half hours.
A second diversion
Following closely behind the TUI fly aircraft was a Transavia France service, flight number TO 7690 from Paris Orly. Having departed Paris at just after 07:00 that morning, it was due to land at Funchal at 09:40. The flight was operated by a five year old Boeing 737-800, registered F-HTVD.
Like the TUI fly flight, the Transavia service circled for quite some time on the approach to Madeira, completing five full laps before deciding to divert. The landing was not attempted at all, and the aircraft headed straight for a diversion to Tenerife South instead.
The plane held for five circuits then headed for TFS. Photo:
FlightRadar24.com
Having spent just under three hours on the ground in Tenerife, the flight took off again for Madeira at 12:35 local time. It landed successfully in Funchal at 13:39, again around four hours later than the passengers expected to be there.
Known for its notorious weather
The Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, more commonly known as Madeira Airport, is considered one of the world’s more extreme airports.
Don’t let the beautiful island scenery fool you, because being situated on high cliffs has disadvantages. With the airport’s runway being somewhat exposed to the Atlantic Ocean, the northern wind constantly breaks off the cliffs and creates rather aggressive turbulence right above the runway.
Landing at Madeira Airport can be quite tricky as the airport experiences its fair share of crosswinds. Things can get dangerous quickly when strong wind currents are present, which also results in problems for landing aircraft.

This is generally when incoming flights will be diverted to other airports, including Porto Santo Island and the Canaries. Diversions can bring on additional problems of not having sufficient fuel to return, as flights from mainland Europe would have already been flying for about 4 to 6 hours.
In addition to the unfavorable winds, the island’s mountainous areas sometimes paves the way for heavy rain that could be in the form of hail with thunderstorms as well.
Cancellations for the air and sea
With little notoriety for volatile weather, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that flight cancellations happen pretty often at the airport.
Last year on December 5th, approximately 13 departures had to be canceled due to powerful gusts that went up to 108 km/h (67 mph). And the most recent cancellations happened earlier this year in February, three flights operated by TAP Air Portugal and three other flights from Jet2.com had to be canceled due to strong winds.
It’s not just flight cancellations that happen, unfortunately, as the volatile weather affects the sea. Scheduled cruises and ferries on the Porto Santo Line often face cancellations due to bad weather conditions that could jeopardize the safety of the ship and its passengers.

Garden Travel Guide to Madeira and Canary Islands
Madeira and the Canary Islands are favourite holiday destinations for many Europeans for their year-round mild climate and exclusive hotel and beach resorts. Both are home to many indigenous plant species that are grown in gardens around the world, including Madeira’s Geranium madeirensis and Scilla madeirensis, and the Canary Island’s Euphorbia canariensis, Dracaena draco (dragon tree) and Phoenix canariensis (the Canary Island date palm).
Gardens to see and visit in Madeira and the Canary Islands include subtropical gardens of palms, orchids, mature trees and fountains, as well as dry subtropics gardens of cactus and succulents, and many beautiful streetscapes.
Note: although Madeira and the Canary islands are politically part of Portugal and Spain respectively and therefore Europe, they are included in the African region due to their proximity to Africa’s north-west coast
“Madeira made me want to breath deeper, the fresh air a healthy retreat! This beautiful island has dramatic high mountains on one side and the blue of the ocean joins with sky on the other. The roads and paths are steep and windy which forces a slow pace. We walked the levadas, ate local food harvested from small nurtured plots around each village and experienced the warm hospitality of the locals.”

Garden Travel Guide to Madeira and the Canary Islands
Although situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Morocco, Madeira and the Canary Islands are part of Europe as they are island territories of Portugal and Spain respectively. Located in the Atlantic Ocean but in the warm Gulf Stream and about 400km apart, they are islands of volcanic origin with a warm Mediterranean climate and summer daytime average temperatures around 28C, although there will be several days above 35C. In winter, daytime temperatures are about 14C.
Rainfall in Madeira is much higher at about 630mm a year, mostly in winter, while the Canaries has a much lower 125-225mm a year, varying between the islands. However, in recent years Madeira has had severe droughts and subsequent wildfires.
Both Madeira and the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife have mountainous areas, sometimes even snow covered.
Each of the 8 Canary Islands has a distinct microclimate, with those further east – Fuerventura and Lanzarote being much drier than the western islands of Gran Canaria. Tenerife manages to have both, being wet in the north and dry in the south.
Where to see gardens in Madeira and the Canary Islands:
Gardens to visit in the Canary Islands
• Jardin Botanico Canario – Gran Canaria. 27 hectares with a superb collection of indigenous plants from the 7 Canary Islands. Free entry.
• Hotel Botánico – across the road from the Botanical Garden has lush tropical gardens merging into a Japanese garden.
• Jardin de Cactus (Cactus Garden) – Lanzarote. Built in a disused quarry and designed by Cesar Manrique. Over 1100 species of cactus.
• Vineyards in La Geria, Lanzarote – a most unusual landscape as each Malvasia vine is planted in an individual pit and protected by a semi-circular stone wall to protect it from drying winds
• Jardin de la Marquesa (Marquise of Arucas Gardens) – Arucas, Gran Canaria. 5 hectare 19th century garden of palms, dragon trees, ponds and flowers. Open Mon-Sat
• Hijuela del Botánico – La Orotavo, Tenerife
• Santa Cruz de la Palma, La Palma – stroll along the streets of this historic seaside town and admire the colourful window boxes.
• Hotel Rural el Patio – Garachico, Tenerife. Hotel and restaurant set in beautiful gardens alongside a banana plantation
• Gran Hotel Bahía Del Duque Resort – Tenerife. Hotel, spa and 8 restaurants set in more than 6 hectares of grounds and garden
Gardens to visit in Madeira
Madeira is part of Portugal, but located west of Morocco off the African coast. Funchal on Madeira is a paradise for lovers of subtropical gardens.
• Jardim Botânico da Madeira (Madeira Botanical Garden) – Canico. Magnificent topiary gardens, succulent gardens, floral carpet, conservation of native Madeiran plants, abundant birdlife, especially parrots.
• Jardim Orquidea – more than 7500 varieties of orchids
• Jardim Tropical da Quinta do Monte Palace (Monte Palace Tropical Gardens) – accessed by cable car from Funchal. 7 hectares of magnificent woodland gardens, with streams and waterfalls. Significant cycad collection
• Palheiro Gardens – huge camellia collection, many exotic mature trees, colourful foliage and flowers, topiary parterre.
• Santa Catarina Park – mature trees, large lake and fountain, colourful flower beds. Free entry.
• Jardim Municipal – Funchal. Historic and mature trees, flower beds, large lake, sweeping lawns
• Quinta Jardins do Lago – boutique hotel, restaurant and bar surrounded by 2.5 hectares of lush and colourful gardens

It feels like you’ve traveled back in time here, as you stand to look at the tall houses beside the Santa Ana cathedral. Very close by, you can visit the Casa de Colón, a museum dedicated to the famous explorer. The museum is housed in the palace belonging to the island’s former governor. Chances are, you’ll be drawn to the covered Vegueta market to partake in some daily life along with the locals and taste some unfamiliar dishes.

- 1 Breakfast
On the tip of the African continent, the buzzing capital of Senegal stretches along the narrow peninsula of Cape Verde. You may be overwhelmed by its sheer size, but Dakar will win you over with its richly diverse districts, appealing cultural scene, and rich natural surroundings. In the historic center, you’ll enjoy the pell-mell of colors and tasty delights in Kermel market. A visit to the island of Gorée is deeply moving; for several hundred years this island was the largest slave-trading center on the African coast. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you are looking for pristine, unspoiled nature, the wildlife in the heart of Madeleine Islands’ national park will not disappoint.
Disembark after breakfast and transfer to the airport to begin your journey home.

Mega yacht Le Lyrial offers accommodation in 122 cabins and suites with cozy balconies.
The yacht will captivate you with its sophisticated design, inspired by sea voyages and the glow of the Blue Star in the constellation Lyra, which gave the name to the ship, launched in 2015.
Turquoise-blue hues predominate on board, which decorate not only common recreation areas, but also cozy cabins.
Le Lyrial is designed to accommodate 264 passengers who can truly relax in the onboard spa or relax on the sun deck. Despite the fact that the yacht is a kind of analogue of several recent twin ships, it is distinguished by a special French elegance and the presence of more spacious suites, each of which is at least 40 square meters. meters.
There are two restaurants on board, three lounges including an open-air pool bar, theatre, fitness center with steam room and Turkish bath, Sothys spa, and plenty of personal space for rest, reflection and relaxation.
Unique itineraries beyond the reach of large boats and an atmosphere of luxury and elegance await you. According to the canons of the great French traditions, the cuisine on board the ship is comparable to the cuisines of the best restaurants in the world, and the sophisticated attentive service in the restaurant is an obligatory hallmark of the Company.

Are you planning a holiday in Madeira? We have many profitable and last minute tours to Portugal, Madeira, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and other Canary Islands, as these are the main year-round destinations of AVIABALTIC. We bring to your attention a wide range of resorts in Madeira and the Canary Islands. Tours to Madeira and the Canary Islands are available with departures from Vilnius, Warsaw and sometimes Minsk. Stay with us and choose the vacation that suits you best!
AVIABALTIC is a tour operator and travel agency for Madeira
The island is a green subtropical paradise. Due to the constant daily temperature of around 24°C, Madeira is called the region of “eternal early summer”, as the island is attractive for tourists throughout the year. Various flowers and fruit trees growing everywhere, as well as diverse landscapes with breathtaking levadas and picturesque waterfalls, delight here. The magical island is located 500 km. from the coast of Africa and 1000 km. from the continent of Europe. Near Madeira is also the neighboring island of Porto Santo with beautiful sandy beaches.
The World Travel Awards often named Madeira the best island in the world. In the voting of experts and travelers, the Portuguese island is ahead of its “eternal competitors” – Bali and the Maldives. The charming and fabulous island of Madeira, the pearl of the entire Atlantic, is a truly unique destination with direct flights.
Madeira can be traveled in a few days, while visiting several climatic zones – from the tundra to the subtropics. Thanks to the warm Gulf Stream, the island has a pleasant temperature all year round. The hallmark of the island is its stunning nature: breathtaking views of the ocean, waterfalls falling right onto the road, cedar groves, volcanic caves, walks along fabulous levadas. You should definitely rent a car and go on an exciting journey. However, be prepared for extreme driving, elevation changes, and steep drops instead of shoulders. But it’s definitely worth it! One of the points of the mandatory program should be the ascent to the highest point of the island – Peak Ruivu (1862 meters). The surrounding scenery is breathtaking! Also in Madeira you can buy profitable organized excursions and do real trekking. Two-thirds of the island is occupied by a nature reserve, orchids have become a symbol of the island. Madeira is also the birthplace of the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, and the local airport is named after him.
Tourism, along with the production of Madeira wine and agriculture, is one of the main sources of income for the islanders. At the end of summer, the Maderians invite you to taste their own wine products. Funchal, the capital of Madeira, stretches from the coast with a beautiful port to the highlands, which can be climbed by cable car. Many events, festivals and carnivals are organized here. The capital has a huge number of cozy pubs and restaurants. The most colorful of them are located in the old part of the city. The famous Mercado dos Lavradores market is popular among the townspeople and guests, where you can buy exotic fruits, original outfits or seafood.
Hidden in laurel forests, levadas are unique irrigation canals, along which about 1500 km have appeared. trekking and walking routes. The most popular trekking route leads through Madeira’s three highest peaks: Pico Areiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. Also worth a stop is the beautiful Camara de Lobos, a traditional fishing village that was once Winston Churchill’s favorite haunt. Take a whale watching cruise and swim in the natural lava pools in Porto Moniz!
The main component of Madeira cuisine is the delicacy fish espada (saber fish) and octopus stewed in a pot, while the richness of exotic fruits makes you dizzy: passion fruit, mango, papaya, avocado, fragrant bananas and banana-pineapples. Be sure to try the traditional poncha – a drink made from sugar cane, honey and fresh lemon juice, as well as the famous Madeira – a strong and colorful wine that has been produced only here for over 200 years.
Are there beaches in Madeira?
The island has two main sandy beaches – Machico and Calheta, which are made from sand brought from the Sahara. The island is dominated by pebbly beaches, but there are also places for swimming – platforms with a descent into the ocean and artificial terraces with ocean water pools. An excellent beach in the north of Madeira – Seixal beach is very popular. The offer of hotels is characterized by a very high level. Best hotels: VidaMar Resort Hotel Madeira 5* and Savoy Calheta Beach 4*
AVIABALTIC is a tour operator and travel agency for 6 Canary Islands
Canary Islands – a picturesque archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, a region of eternal summer with a unique climate, emerald valleys and sandy beaches. Formally, the Canary Islands belong to Spain, but experts identify the Canaries as a separate region with its own characteristics. The atmosphere here is by no means European, but exotic: magnificent tropical landscapes, soft waves of the ocean, volcanic beaches with useful and unusual black sand, fragrant and ripe Canarian fruits.
AVIABALTIC offers 6 Canary Islands for recreation (Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, Fuerteventura). Tours in Tenerife departing from Minsk, Vilnius and Warsaw are the most popular type of holiday. The second most popular destination is tours to the warm island of Gran Canaria. If Tenerife is considered a family island, Gran Canaria is a youth island, and Fuerteventura is romantic, then Lanzarote is an island with Martian landscapes and unusual beaches.

The main island with Funchal, the capital of the Portuguese region, of course, is Madeira, but besides it, the archipelago includes the large island of Porto Santo and several small archipelagos with uninhabited islands. As in the cities of continental Portugal, Funchal has a historical center and a new part. The old town impresses with its beautiful architecture and captivates with its romantic atmosphere. Interesting buildings, ancient churches, museums and galleries are located on cozy streets. There are several large markets in the city where you can buy a variety of exotic fruits.
The second most important island of Archipelago – Porto Santa. It is located just 43 kilometers northeast of Madeira and has only one city – Vila Baleira. Tourism is the main source of income on the island. The nine-kilometer beach of Porto Santo attracts tourists from all over the world. Most of the tourist infrastructure has already been built in the 2000s, which indicates the novelty of hotels and the fact that this direction is still being developed and in the future may become no less popular than the Spanish Canaries or Mallorca and Ibiza. South of Madeira, the desert archipelago Ilyas Desertas. The three islands are very different from the wooded land of Madeira. They are rocky and deserted, fresh water is only on one island, but it is also muddy and of poor quality, so all attempts to colonize the archipelago were unsuccessful. Now only caretakers and scientists live on the islands-reserves. And, here, there are not many living creatures, but it is very valuable, for example, monk seals, which are under the threat of extinction. In addition to seals, Ilyash Desertash is inhabited by 16 species of birds, goats, rabbits and spiders. One species of spider is unique, found only in this archipelago. The Autonomous District of Madeira, but not in the geographical concept of the archipelago, includes two small uninhabited groups of islands – North and South Selvages. These islands are nature reserves and are rarely visited by tourists because of their remoteness from Madeira – the distance between the archipelagos is 280 kilometers, even the Canaries are 100 kilometers closer to Selvagens. AZORESTERRA NOSHTRA A delightful natural park enchants with its views and diversity of flora and fauna Angra Doezhmu City Tersirera is a pleasant highlight of the island with typically European streets and buildings June 24, The main holiday of the Azores is the concentration of bright colors, fun and friendly atmosphere
Punta Topo Topo Topo Topo 9000 The village on the island of Pico and its surrounding waters have been closed to fishing and diving for 20 years, so the underwater world looks like it has never been visited by a person On the map On the map On the map On the map The Azores are different from their cousin Madeira. There are no interesting city sights, long beaches and entertainment infrastructure here. Azores is a pristine nature of unimaginable beauty. 9 islands of the archipelago are located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and amaze with their landscapes, mountains, forests and lakes. It is not surprising that the highest point in all of Portugal is here – the Pico volcano. Separately, people come to the Azores to see the underwater world that surrounds them. Diving is very developed in the Azores. The southernmost island of the Santa Maria archipelago, also known as the “South Island”. This place was the first to be discovered among the Azores, and Christopher Columbus, returning from America, held mass here in the chapel of Our Lady of the Angels. The hilly city also has natural beauties, but besides them there are a couple of old churches and houses. Car races are held here every year.
The Central Group Azor is included five islands: Fayal, Pica, Pica, Pica, Pica, Pica, Pica, Pico, Pico, Pico, Pico, Peak, Peaks, Pico, Peaks, Pico, Peaks, Pico, peaks, peaks, peaks, peaks, peak Graciosa, San Jorge and Terceira. Every year there are more and more tourists to them, thanks to the vibrant nature and the fantastic sea world. Boats depart from the islands with excursions that take tourists to watch dolphins, sperm whales, and whales. The beauty of diving near the islands is also impressive. In the western group, as well as in the eastern one, there are two islands – Flores and Corvo. They are just beginning to interest tourists. There used to be a French missile range on Florish, but in 1994 they left the island and after that tourism only began to develop here. Winemaking and agriculture are very developed on the islands. São Jorge cheese is very popular throughout Portugal and is often bought as a souvenir. Azores pineapples are known all over the world, they are much sweeter and tastier than usual ones. CANARY and MADEIRA – cruise from FranceSeptember 3, 2019 A member of the NTPP Union, the travel agency “Personal Guide” offers a beautiful and calm, rare route for a relaxing holiday on the MSC Poesia liner “Mediterranean plus Canaries” – this is a 2-week cruise from 30. 09 from Marseille!
