How to get to la gomera: Getting to La Gomera: A Complete Guide
How to get to La Gomera
How to get from Tenerife to La Gomera? The journey to La Gomera has become relatively easy compared to the past, although it still takes a little while to get to the island. Some transport companies offer a comfortable shuttle transfer from Tenerife South Airport to La Gomera, so you don’t have to worry about anything in advance and the holiday can immediately start.
If required, we will be happy to book the comfortable transfer service which will pick you up at the airport and drive you to your accommodation on La Gomera.
Most holidaymakers land at Tenerife South Airport (TFS). From there you have to get to the port of Los Cristianos (Tenerife) and then transfer by ferry or fast ferry to La Gomera. It takes roundabout 30 minutes by taxi or rental car from Tenerife South Airport to the port of Los Cristianos (Tenerife). The public bus takes about 45 to 60 minutes. It leaves right in front of the Tenerife South Airport building. All major bus lines stop here, including line 111, which will take you to Los Cristianos. However, the bus does not directly connect to the ferry port. You have to walk 10 to 15 minutes from the bus stop, so we recommend this way of travelling to the experienced Gomera holidaymaker.
The ferry crossing from Los Cristianos (Tenerife) to San Sebastian (La Gomera) takes another 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the ferry company. From the port in San Sebastian you will have various onward travel options in the holiday resort you booked on La Gomera. You see, getting to La Gomera is still not that easy – but it is worth it!
From Tenerife to La Gomera
Does Tenerife also have a direct ferry to La Gomera? Yes, there are two ferry companies that guarantee regular and direct connections between the two islands. When it comes to flight times, make sure you don’t arrive too late, otherwise you might miss the last ferry to La Gomera and then you would have to spend a night in Tenerife. As a rule, the last ferry to La Gomera (San Sebastian) departs around 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm, so that the plane should land no later than 5:00 pm!
Since the end of 2017, the FRED OLSEN ferry company directly runs from San Sebastian via Playa de Santiago to the popular holiday resort of Valle Gran Rey, which is located in the sunny west of the island of La Gomera. However, this is a passenger ferry, cars unfortunately cannot be transported. The car ferry of the ARMAS company, which also drove directly to Valle Gran Rey, was discontinued in June 2019. To the best of our knowledge, it is driving again, but very irregularly.
If you are affected by seasickness or a sensitive stomach, you should, for example, use the services of “Autobuses Mesa”, which organises a direct transfer service from Tenerife South Airport to your holiday resort on La Gomera. The journey from Tenerife airport to La Gomera usually takes place in air-conditioned and modern coaches and the price is often cheaper than booking every service individually.
As a rule, there are always enough taxis available at the ferry port of San Sebastian (La Gomera) and some car rental operators have also stationed their offices there. The public bus from La Gomera also stops directly on the harbour area. As a rule, the buses are roughly based on the ferry times, so that a good connection is usually guaranteed. Those who travel to the particularly well-developed holiday regions of Playa Santiago, San Sebastian or Valle Gran Rey have a particularly easy going. You can download the current bus timetable of La Gomera here free of charge as a PDF file: Bus timetable La Gomera
La Gomera Airport
La Gomera has its own airport, but it cannot be served directly from mainland Europe. The Canarian airline “Binter Canarias “ offers regular flights from Tenerife North to La Gomera. However, this is often more expensive and time-consuming and the connection to other holiday resorts on La Gomera is a bit more complex from the airport in Playa Santiago. However, once the plane has landed two regular buses regularly run on time and except on public holidays, in direction San Sebastian and another to Valle Gran Rey. From the capital you have access to all other places on the island of La Gomera.
Our Tip
Sometimes for organizational reasons you are forced to spend the first or last night in Tenerife, because the ferry times are unfavourable or the flights are significantly cheaper. In this case we recommend the small and cheap accommodation of Ernstl and Elke. The lovingly managed guesthouse is situated in a rural and quiet area in the southeast of Tenerife, 15 minutes by car from the southern airport (Abades district). On request they also offer an airport transfer, so you don’t have to worry about anything. A delicious breakfast can also be booked.
No responsibility is taken for the correctness of all details and information regarding the individual arrival options, times and prices. The times of ferries and buses in particular can change at short notice at any time! Please bear this in mind when planning your holiday and inform yourself in advance on the websites of the individual ferry and bus companies.
Autobuses Mesa La Gomera
The comfortable transfer with “Autobuses Mesa” is a popular alternative to start your holiday in a relaxed manner. You can easily and quickly book the transfer from Tenerife airport to La Gomera on the internet. We would also be happy to book the cheap transfer from Tenerife Airport to La Gomera for you – including ferry tickets. If you are interested just send us an email.
Autobuses Mesa has a small ticket counter at the end of Tenerife South Airport, which you can simply go to after your arrival and show your printed reservation. The amount will be paid in cash to the driver if you haven`t paid with your credit card on the Internet previously.
From Tenerife South Airport you will be driven directly to the port of Los Cristianos (Tenerife), the journey takes about half an hour. In some cases there may be waiting times, as the ferries to La Gomera usually only run 3 times a day. Arriving in Los Cristianos, take the Fred. Olsen fast ferry to San Sebastian, the capital of La Gomera. The waiting time varies depending on the landing time. Until then, you can store your suitcases in Fred. Olsen’s designated storage vagons in the port of Los Cristianos. Please provide 1€ per suitcase compartment in small money. The trunk scar is driven by the ferry staff and parked on arrival at La Gomera at the local port. The crossing takes about 45 – 60 minutes. Once you arrive at La Gomera, a local driver from “Autobuses Mesa” will be waiting for you at the exit of the ferry. This can be seen by the clothing that refers to the company “Autobuses Mesa” or a sign with the company name in their hand. After you have taken your suitcases out of the ferry vagon, you can place them directly in the bus assigned to you.
The company mainly cooperates with the ferry company Fred Olsen. As a rule, ferries depart 3 times a day to La Gomera, with slightly more limited ferry times on weekends or (local) holidays.
BOOKING AUTOBUSES MESA
Fred Olsen Ferry La Gomera
The Fred Olsen ferry “Benchijigua Express” departs from the port of Tenerife (Los Cristianos) to La Gomera (San Sebastian) within 45-60 minutes. It is a large fast ferry that can also transport cars. As a rule, the ferries only run 3 times a day and it makes sense to adjust the flight time according to the ferry times, otherwise you have to spend one night in Tenerife. On (local) holidays, the ferry often only departs twice a day.
From San Sebastian, Valle Gran Rey and other resorts are easily accessible by bus, taxi, or the “Autobuses Mesa” buses. For example, the journey to Valle Gran Rey takes about one and a half hours.
Since 2017 there is a regular and direct connection from San Sebastian to Playa Santiago and then Valle Gran Rey with the small fast ferry “Benchi Express“. Since it is a relatively small ferry, the approach can get a little more shaky, especially if the sea is stronger. This small ferry, designed for a maximum of 250 people, doesn`t carry cars. But bicycles and motorcycles can be transported without any problems.
Fred Olsen owns a ticket counter at the port of San Sebastian and in Valle Gran Rey. However, we recommend that you get your ticket in advance, as there can often be waiting times or long queues at the counter.
If required, we can also book ferry tickets for you with the shipping company Fred Olsen.
Armas Ferry La Gomera
The ferry company “Naviera Armas” also offers regular services from Tenerife (Los Cristianos) to La Gomera (San Sebastian). Their timetable is similar to those of Fred Olsen. Often the ARMAS ferry is a little cheaper than Fred. Olsen, but it also takes 30 minutes longer to cross. There also is a ticket office in San Sebastian de La Gomera and in the port of Valle Gran Rey.
Since the end of 2017, the ARMAS company also offers a direct connection from Tenerife to Valle Gran Rey. The large car ferry also runs the Los Cristianos – San Sebastian – Valle Gran Rey route 3 times a day. The boat, which is almost 100 metres long, can accommodate a maximum of 870 passengers and can carry up to 220 cars.
Armas has a ticket counter at the port of San Sebastian de La Gomera and Valle Gran Rey. However, we recommend that you get your ticket in advance, as there can often be waiting times or long queues at the counter. However, it is also possible that ARMAS makes a stopover in Playa Santiago, please check the ARMAS website for more information.
In June 2019, the direct ferry service from Los Cristianos to Valle Gran Rey was stopped.
The connection was recently resumed, but the ARMAS only runs very irregularly from Los Cristianos to Valle Gran Rey. The regular traffic from Tenerife to San Sebastian de La Gomera is not affected. Therefore we recommend to continue your journey from San Sebastian de La Gomera, as you are on the safe side and can take a bus or a taxi if necessary.
Binter Canarias
Binter Canarias is a regional airline based on the Canary Islands (Gran Canaria) since 1989. With small, often very modern machines, holidaymakers can fly easily from island to island. At the beginning Binter Canarias flew only to the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Fuerteventura and La Palma, later Lanzarote and El Hierro were added.
La Gomera was included as a travel destination in 1999 after the airport was completed. Funchal in Madeira, El Aayún in Western Sahara, Lisbon, Milan and Paris are also on the Canarian airline’s schedule.
The Binter company also cooperates with the provider TUIfly, whose guests are booked on connecting flights of Binter Canarias in order to reach the smaller islands without own airport.
For example, the village of Valle Gran Rey has a perfect connection to La Gomera Airport (IATA code: GMZ), as a scheduled bus departs there 2 hours before departure. The small airport is located in the municipality of Alajeró and is about 35 kms from the capital San Sebastian.
You can fly from Tenerife South or Tenerife North to La Gomera. However, we don´t recommend this travel possibility, as it often takes longer than by bus, taxi or shuttle transfer.
Taxi La Gomera
Of course each municipality on La Gomera has its own taxi service.
In the ports of San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey there are usually enough taxis available when a ferry arrives from Los Cristianos (Tenerife).
In order to get a rough orientation, it is always useful to ask in advance for the approximate price to the desired destination.
You should always make sure that the taximeter is switched on while driving. Of course there is a surcharge to the normal fare on weekends and public holidays, as well as in the late evening.
If posible the formation of a taxi carpools is often worth it. For example, a trip from San Sebastian de La Gomera to the resort of Valle Gran Rey costs around 60. 00-70.00€ during the day, so sharing with other travellers can be profitable.
But beware, La Gomera is a little different than Britain and the rest of Europe. For example, you may not find a car at the taxi rank or the driver may not adhere to the agreed time or meeting point. However, these are only exceptions, in general everything works quite well and the drivers are very helpful people.
Please note that many taxi drivers only speak Spanish or just a little English.
If you want to explore the island by taxi, the drivers will also take you on a tour around La Gomera. Some drivers have worked out special routes and offer quite attractive prices for an island tour by taxi.

Bus La Gomera
The public buses on La Gomera are called “GuaGua”. GuaGua Gomera to be exact.
The route network on La Gomera is now quite well developed, with a total of eight different bus lines running on the island. Almost all tourist-accessible places are regularly approached. Since June 2018 new, very modern and air-conditioned coaches are running.
The prices are still relatively cheap and vary between 2€ – 6€ per person and route. The bus ticket is paid in cash directly to the driver (attention, the drivers do not change large bills).
Times can also change at short notice due to the many national and local holidays. Please inform yourself shortly before arrival. As a rule, the buses are based on the ferry times, so that a good connection is guaranteed.
Especially during the busy times and during the high season, we recommend that you get in directly at the first stop to get a seat. It may well happen that the buses do not stop at all when they are already full. Usually a second bus is used, but you can’t always rely on it. This notice applies mainly to the resort of Valle Gran Rey.
During the journey, the drivers often switch on the air conditioning, which is why it can get a little cooler during the bus journey, especially on the longer distances. Therefore, it is recommended to always take a jacket or a (hood) sweater on the bus, even in midsummer.

Rental cars La Gomera
Here you can find our car rental offers
Of course, we can also arrange a rental car from Tenerife or La Gomera in order to offer you a free independent travelling. The streets on La Gomera are well developed and the individual places are visibly signposted. It gets more complicated when you spend your holiday in a very small place. Here the journey could get a little trickier, as there are many small, winding roads away from the larger towns. In this case, printing the directions at home and take it with you, nothing can go wrong.
Take advantage of the good personal contacts between “Canarianfeeling” and the car rental company “Mulagua” and book your rental car on La Gomera online. Further information about the different vehicles, prices and services can be found on our website in the category “car rental”.
We strongly advise against the so-called “cheap offers” on the internet! Our reservations include all kilometers driven, you don´t have to pay a deposit and an accident and repair service is available.

How to Get to La Gomera
Getting to La Gomera from Tenerife is very easy if you know how. To make your getaway perfect, I’ll tell you all the ways to get there.

Discover La Gomera | ©Werner B.
Visiting La Gomera on a trip to Tenerife is one of the essential plans you must make on your vacation. It is located only about 40 kilometers away and despite its small size it has amazing landscapes that seem to be from another planet.
So if you have some free time in Tenerife to escape one day to La Gomera, I tell you how to get there so you can start preparing your visit.
1. The most comfortable way: on an organized excursion from Tenerife
Take an excursion| ©Phoenix Trimegisto
If you don’t have much time to see La Gomera in one day, the most comfortable and quickest way is to join an organized excursion around the island from Tenerife.
This type of activity will help you get the most out of La Gomera, since you won’t have to worry about organizing the logistics (finding transportation, hiring the services of a guide, locating tourist attractions, finding a good place to eat. ..) Everything is designed for you to let yourself go, relax and focus on enjoying the experience!
In addition, compared to visiting La Gomera on your own, with an organized excursion to La Gomera from Tenerife you will save time (both in planning the visit and once on the island where the guide will show you the most important things) and also money (the cost of visiting La Gomera on your own is higher because you will have to rent a vehicle to travel around the island).
Depending on your tastes or your budget, there are different organized excursions to explore La Gomera. In this sense, I recommend you to read the article The best excursions to La Gomera from Tenerife to know the best options with which you can explore the island.

2. Travel on your own to La Gomera from Tenerife: Use the Ferry
Ferry to La Gomera| ©Tony Hisgett
The ferry is the most popular option to reach La Gomera from Tenerife. Currently the companies Naviera Armas and Fred Olsen cover the route. If you wish to visit the island on your own by ferry I advise you to buy your tickets in advance.
A detail to take into account when budgeting your trip is that the single adult ticket of the company Naviera Armas (from 40 €) is a little cheaper than the company Fred Olsen (from 41 €) but both ships are large, comfortable and stable.
The ship sails from the port of Los Cristianos, south of Tenerife, to the port of San Sebastian de La Gomera. It has daily routes and in only 50 minutes you will disembark in the capital of the island.
Book an excursion to La Gomera from Tenerife
Board the ferry with or without a car
If you are going to visit La Gomera on your own it will be essential that you have a vehicle to move around the island, so I advise you to rent one to move from one place to another with greater freedom. There are many companies where you can hire this service although if you want to simplify procedures, you can also book it together with the ferry ticket in the same company.
In case you travel to La Gomera from Tenerife and you want to take your car with you, in order to access the ferry with the vehicle, you have to present yourself well in advance to the boarding following the indications of the transport that you can consult in your ticket. However, if you have any doubts about this, it is advisable to contact the ferry company beforehand.
Travel by ferry to La Gomera with the family
If you plan to visit La Gomera as a family and you are traveling with children, they will need to have their own ticket to ride the ferry although the price of the child (4 to 11 years old) or baby (0 to 3 years old) ticket is lower than that paid by adults.
The journey to La Gomera from Tenerife will fly by for the little ones because the ferry has a wide range of leisure activities to entertain them until they reach the Port of San Sebastian de La Gomera: children’s area and playground, cartoons, movies… they will have such a good time on board that they will not want to get off!
Eat on the ferry and continue your route around the island
You can take advantage of the trip to La Gomera to have a snack in the ferry’s cafeteria. This is a good option if you get hungry along the way and want to kill the munchies quickly or if you are traveling with your family and prefer to eat on board so that the kids don’t miss their meal times. This way, you won’t have to worry about finding a restaurant when you disembark and you can continue your route around the island as you had planned.
Where the ferry drops you off and how to get to the center of La Gomera
The ferry from Tenerife arrives at the port of San Sebastian de La Gomera, the capital of the island. To get to the city you can walk, take a cab or bus (lines 3 and 7 stop near the port).

3. Fly to La Gomera: with a flight from the airport
Fly to La Gomera| ©Rob Hodgkins
The fastest option to get to La Gomera is to take a flight from Tenerife. The island has only one airport (located in the town of Alajeró) that receives planes from the international airports of Tenerife South and Tenerife North.
In case your plane from the mainland lands in Tenerife South, taking a boat is the easiest way to get to La Gomera.
On the other hand, if you land in Tenerife North, apart from the ferry, you have the option to get to La Gomera by plane of the airline Binter, which makes two daily flights.
Compared to the ferry, it is not a very popular option, as the plane ticket is more expensive (from 100€). The journey takes about 30 minutes and after landing at La Gomera airport you will have to take a bus, cab or rental car to go to different parts of the island.
How to get from the airport to San Sebastian de La Gomera
The airport of La Gomera is located 34 kilometers by road from San Sebastian de La Gomera. To get to the capital of the island you can choose different means of transport depending on your needs, tastes or budget. Below you will find some ideas:
4. By rental car, to move around more freely
Rent a car| ©Jordi Sabaté
If you do not want to depend on the schedules and availability of public transport to go to San Sebastian de La Gomera from the airport of the island, it is best to book a rental car that allows you to move at your leisure with total freedom.
Some companies that provide this service on the island are Cicar or Avis. Depending on the characteristics and brand of the vehicle you can find options from 30 € per day.
What documents are needed to rent a car in La Gomera?
- To have an identity card or passport
- To have a valid national or international driver’s license.
- To have a minimum of 1 or 2 years of driving license.
- Be 21 years of age or older, depending on the rental company.
5. By bus, the most economical option
Travel by bus| ©secrettenerife.co.uk
If you don’t have a rental car to go to the capital, the most convenient way is to go to the airport bus station and take the bus line 3 operated by the company GuaguaGomera, which costs 4€ and will take you there in about 1 hour.
La Gomera has 7 lines to connect the different localities of the island:
- Line 1 – Valle Gran Rey – San Sebastián de La Gomera
- Line 2 – Vallehermoso – San Sebastián
- Line 3 – Alajeró – San Sebastián
- Line 4 – Vallehermoso – La Dama
- Line 5 – Vallehermoso – Alojera
- Line 6 – Valle Gran Rey – Airport
- Line 7 – San Sebastián – Airport
- Line 8 – Vallehermoso – Valle Gran Rey
6.
By cab, the fastest transport
Take a cab| ©Humphrey Muleba
However, you can also take a cab that will take you to San Sebastián de La Gomera in only 35 minutes. It is the fastest way but compared to the bus is somewhat more expensive since the trip costs between 40 and 55 €.
A piece of advice? Always take the cab at the established cab rank at the airport and avoid those drivers who offer the same service outside that point.
How to travel to La Gomera
The airport of La Gomera (GMZ) has no capacities for international air traffic. Only the Canarian airline Binter Canarias is approaching the small airport. So the straight way to La Gomera is leading via Tenerife-South/Reina Sofia (TFS) and then by ferry. The southern airport of Tenerife lies about 15 kilometres from the ferry port of Los Cristianos.
Getting to La Gomera via Teneriffa
Travelling to La Gomera…
…via Tenerife-South (TFS)
If you make your flight arrangements to Tenerife Sur “Reina Sofía” (TFS), we advise as a rough guide the following flight times, so you will get the ferry to La Gomera the day of arrival, resp. reach the airport the day of departure in time: Your plane should not land after 5.30 p.m. Canary time, and it should not depart before 11 a.m. Canary time.
From the airport Tenerife-South to the ferry port of Los Cristianos it is about 15 minutes by taxi (15 km, ca. 23 Euros). There is also a bus connection between the airport Tenerife-South and Los Cristianos with the two lines of TITSA no. 111 and no. 343. The bus stop in Los Cristianos is situated about 1 km from the ferry port, though. (Some of the buses of the line 111 stop at the ferry terminal of Los Cristianos before they continue to Playa de las Américas – please ask the driver.)
→ TITSA: http://www.titsa.com
…via Tenerife-North (TFN)
The second airport of Tenerife, Tenerife Norte „Los Rodeos“ (TFN), is situated about 8 km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. From the northern airport it is about 70 kilometres to Los Cristianos, where the ferries to La Gomera depart.
The ferry companies Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas offer with their tickets a cost-free non-stop coach to the ferry port of Los Cristianos. The buses depart 90 minutes before departure of the ferries at the central bus station of Santa Cruz de Tenerife („estación de guaguas de Santa Cruz“). So, if you have booked flights to Tenerife-North, it is easiest to take a taxi to the central bus station and then continue with the coach.
Binter Canarias
Alternatively the small planes of the Canarian airline Binter Canarias are heading from Tenerife-North (TFN) to La Gomera (GMZ) two times a day, the flight takes about half an hour. The airport of La Gomera is located close to Playa de Santiago.
→ Binter Canarias: https://www.bintercanarias.com/eng
…via ferry from Los Cristianos to La Gomera
Two ferry companies offer the passage Tenerife (Los Cristianos) → San Sebastián de la Gomera. The ferries for cars and trucks leave about three times a day.
→ Fred. Olsen: https://www.fredolsen. es/en
→ Naviera Armas: http://www.navieraarmas.com
Fred. Olsen and Naviera Armas offer the passage to San Sebastián de la Gomera, Naviera Armas also offers the passsage to Valle Gran Rey (duration 1.5 hours direct).

→ Timetable Olsen: San Sebastián de la Gomera
→ Timetable Armas: Valle Gran Rey
To pick the ferries that suit your flight times best, calculate as follows. You will be waiting for your luggage at the airport, that might take a while, then it takes you about 15 minutes by taxi from the airport Tenerife-South (TFS) to the harbour in Los Cristianos (about 23 Euros), please be at the harbour half an hour before departure of the ferry. The passage to San Sebastián is about 1 hour.

Exploring La Gomera…
…by bus
On La Gomera, the villages San Sebastián de la Gomera, Valle Gran Rey and Vallehermoso offer a good bus connection. At the harbour of San Sebastián de la Gomera the buses of the Servicio Regular Gomera (GuaguaGomera) are waiting for the arrival and departure of the Fred. Olsen ferry from/ to Los Cristianos. The central bus stop („estación de guaguas“) is located in the city centre of San Sebastián de la Gomera right above the market hall.

…by ferry
After a break of several years, Fred. Olsen revived the small passenger ferry „Benchi Express“ (bikes and motor bikes, no cars or trucks), connecting Valle Gran Rey, Playa de Santiago and San Sebastián de la Gomera in just 1.5 hours.
• Valle Gran Rey → Playa Santiago: 40 minutes
• Playa Santiago → San Sebastián de la Gomera: 30 minutes

Finding the way to your holiday home
There are only few roads on La Gomera and even fewer junctions. But watch out! The naming follows creative principles, that (in the eyes of strangers) are hard (if not impossible) to comprehend, and although every street actually has a name, there is hardly any labelling. For non-locals it can be quite difficult to find the booked accommodation. To avoid you getting lost on La Gomera, we will provide you with a detailed description of how to get to your holiday destination without trouble.
How to get to La Gomera in the Canary Islands – Airports and Hotels
The fact that La Gomera is a minor island of the western province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in Spain often leads potential visitors to undervalue it in favour of the major capital islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the ones that are featured in travel magazines more often. Far from the assumption that this smaller island offers less to see and do, La Gomera in the Canaries is a true paradise for nature lovers which was declared World Biosphere Reserve in 2011, boasting nice temperatures all year round, virgin volcanic landscapes, national parks with prehistoric vegetation, breathtaking cliffs and viewpoints, natural pools and beaches. What is more, aside from taking the opportunity to discover and enjoy a rich local gastronomy, travellers may equally join a variety of hiking tours and day boat trips, as well as star gazing gatherings, since this island –just like La Palma– is an excellent spot for observing the sky and so a favourite destination for astronomy enthusiasts.
La Gomera: how to arrive
Whether you choose to catch a flight to La Gomera or opt for reaching the island by ferry boat, it is mandatory that you travel to Tenerife first, as all connections are made from Tenerife North International airport and the Port of Los Cristianos in the south of the island, linked to Tenerife South airport by bus line 343. Since many national and international airlines operate flights to both passenger terminals, Tenerife seems like the perfect layover and a convenient stop before visiting La Gomera.
Flights to La Gomera island in the Canaries
The airport in La Gomera consists of a single passenger terminal whose runway is enabled for the landing of small aircrafts only. Thus, if you want to travel to La Gomera by air, you will need to purchase a plane ticket from the Binter Canarias regional company, operating two flights per day from Tenerife North airport towards the air terminal in Playa de Santiago. The journey takes roughly 30 minutes and ticket fares start from 12 euros. Upon arrival, you can either hire a car from Cicar or PlusCar or use public transportation to commute to Valle Gran Rey (bus line 6) and the capital city San Sebastián de La Gomera (bus line 7).
Travelling to La Gomera by ferry boat
Fred Olsen is the main company in charge of transporting passengers from Los Cristianos to San Sebastián de la Gomera (the capital city of the island). Its express ferry boats cover the distance between Tenerife and La Gomera in only 40 minutes, even though travellers may buy tickets for a larger ferry which takes 70 minutes. In the second case, you will be able to take your car with you, sunbathe on the deck and spot dolphins swimming by. There are five scheduled departures per day and fares range from 8 to 34 euros.
Where to stay in La Gomera, Canary Islands
Are you looking for accommodation for your trip to La Gomera? Let us give you some suggestions:
If you want to stay in the capital and wake up to stunning ocean views overlooking the neighbouring island of Tenerife, we recommend the luxurious Parador de La Gomera, featuring ample guest rooms with lots of natural light and an open-air swimming pool surrounded by tropical gardens.
For a retreat near the beach that will also allow for bike tours, visits to Garajonay National Park and hearty breakfast with views, we suggest staying at Hotel Gran Rey, which also has every amenity a traveller can ask for.
And lastly, for a rural stay, consider Hotel Rural Casa Lugo, located in a charming village and built in a traditional Canarian house with complimentary WiFi, a communal patio, safety deposit boxes and comfortable rooms with private toilet and shower; besides, hiking tours are organised for guests.

Tourism
The hackneyed phrase “time stood still” is so close to reality here that any science fiction writer could envy. A lost paradise, with forests that have existed since the very creation of the world, the depths of the sea through which the Nautilus sailed, and on land with people living in patriarchal foundations and not knowing haste. You experience such sensations when approaching the island of La Gomera, which is part of the archipelago of the Canary Islands.
Deep sea jungle
Descending from the mountains covered with dense laurel forest, in the Garajonay National Park, surrounded by clouds and orchestral sounds made by animals found nowhere else in the world, and approaching the rocky coast of La Gomera, it is like returning to the real pristine nature. Once you reach the sea, you will be able to discover all the treasures of the seabed. Tourist Center Casa Diversa » organizes excursions and dives to get acquainted with the nature of the island.
South Seas
The view from the sea will also make you freeze in admiration. The sheer cliffs of Alahero in the southern part of the island demonstrate the full power of prehistoric nature here. And although the island is of volcanic origin, there have been no eruptions here for about 2 million years. The Speedy Adventure cruise on a small boat offers the opportunity to meet tropical pilot whales or groups of dolphins, enter a cave created by the forces of the sea over thousands of years, and see how the endangered osprey fishing bird hunts.
Black beaches with crystal clear waters
For almost 100 kilometers of the coast of La Gomera, changing landscapes shaped by water and time alternate one after another: dozens of small bays, breathtakingly beautiful rocks, black sand or pebble beaches with crystal clear water. The beach of San Sebastian with its volcanic air or the secluded English beach are equally great for swimming and complete relaxation. Recommended: take a book with you and forget about the time. From now on, only the sun will dictate your daily routine.
Visit to Eden
There are many viewing platforms for contemplating what has been created since the beginning of time by nature and man. But if it is also the work of the famous Spanish architect Cesar Manrique, you should definitely stay. The observation deck in Palmarejo allows you to enjoy views of the watchtower in Valle Gran Rey, terraces located on sloping ledges, villages climbing mountain slopes, and tall graceful palm trees. This is a paradise to which it remains only to get used.
Journey into the rural past
Local gastronomy, ancient ways, pottery, silbo gomero (local whistling language)… In Valle Gran Rey you can learn more about the history of the island, thanks to excursions offered by companies such as Timah or Gomera Activa “. A walk through the Chipude Fortress will reveal one of the most mystical places on the island, the ceremonial center of the ancient autochthonous religion. And in the Information Center “Las Loceras” you can appreciate various handicrafts and attend craft workshops. The combination of history and tradition is the key to understanding why La Gomera is called a magical island.

In addition to Playa de Santiago the best beaches on the island are Playa de San Sebastian and Playa de La Cueva located in the eastern part of the island, as well as Playa de Vallehermoso in the north.
The longest beach is La Calera on the west coast. It stretched for over a kilometer.
San Marcos is good for lovers of water sports and entertainment, as it boasts strong waves at any time of the year.
Those wishing to visit the nude beach will be welcomed by Argaga .
Playa De La Calera is another popular beach.
La Gomera Attractions
As a rule, people come here primarily to wander along impassable paths, see unusual plants and breathe clean air. There is not a single industrial enterprise on the island, so it is not exposed to absolutely any pollution. In that part of the island where the climate is optimal for farming, fruits and vegetables are grown, which are marked with the “Environmentally Friendly Product” label.
The Count’s Tower or Torre del Conde is one of the main attractions of the island. It is the very first building built on the island and for many years it was its main defensive structure.
The island appeared on the map in 1375. And in 1492, it was here that the first expedition of the famous traveler Christopher Columbus made his stop, heading to the shores of America. In the main city of the island, a well has been preserved to this day, from which the great discoverer drew water. In addition, tourists are always offered to visit Church of Iglesia de Asuncion , where he prayed for the successful completion of his campaign.
The main thing that tourists want to see is Garajonay Park (El Parque Nacional de Garajonay) , it covers an area of about 40 km2, which is almost 10% of the area of the entire island. More than 450 species of relic plants grow on its territory, so since 1986 it has been protected by UNESCO.
Garajonay Peak has a height of 1484 meters. Unfortunately, the vegetation of the mountain was destroyed by a fire in 2012, but scientists say that it will soon be restored. The nature of the park continues to be the same as it was millions of years ago, which is facilitated by unique climatic conditions – high humidity and constant fog. It is always quite cool here, so when going on an excursion to Garajonay, tourists are advised to take warm clothes with them. A walk through the park is made incredibly interesting by huge trees, and foliage underfoot, and thickets of ferns, and numerous streams. According to legend, the park is named after a young couple. These were the children of the leaders who fell in love with each other. Due to the anger of their parents, they were forced to hide in the forests of the island, and then, seeing no other way out, they committed suicide on this very spot.
In the southern part of the island is located La Caldera Park , which owes its appearance to volcanic activity and is now an extinct large crater.
In the gorge between the hills in the southwest, there is an amazingly beautiful Valley of the Great Kings or the Gran Rey Valley (El Parque Rural de Valle Gran Rey) . It is very interesting to look at the gigantic palm groves spread here and the steps carved into the rocks, the so-called terraces.
There is also an attraction that can only be seen from the sea, as this piece of land is closed to the public. These are cliffs of Los Organos (Los Organos) – basalt columns towering 80 meters above the sea. Their name is due to the striking resemblance to the pipes of a musical instrument.
Surrounded by rocks with dense vegetation, there is the village of Agulo , where many workshops are concentrated. Experienced artisans are happy to demonstrate their skills to tourists. Here is also Red Wall rock . Climbing it you can admire the village from a height, and in clear weather you can see the volcano located on the island of Tenerife.
