We made this place a priority to visit based upon comments of previous reviewers and were not disappointed. It is excellent value in all respects. Staff are friendly enough but hae to be functional to deal with popularity. The place very soon fills up.we both had pizzas, with side salad and they were.very good. House wine is cheap and drinkable. We loved it.

October 2016 was my first visit here since March 2014. This time I ate there on two
consecutive evenings. There are just over thirty covers but on both evenings only
four people dining – myself and the same couple with a child. This contrasted with
my experience two years ago when the place was very lively.
The food is good quality but the proprietor (Mario) has clearly pared down on staff
and so there is a wait for his personal attention. I had supa de marisco and gambas
con ajillo as starters with a goodly portion of fresh fish as the main course. All came
nicely prepared and were a joy to eat.
My one criticism was the wait at the end of the evening. It seemed to take a very
long time to prepare Cafe Americano and to deliver the final bill.
This is a sole proprietor making valiant efforts to survive in the capital town of
his home island (having Agulo as his earlier locale). I do not know is the rundown
in economic activity relates just to his place or more widely on La Gomera or
the Canary Islands generally. I would hope that travellers can support these
home-grown enterprises. Other reviewers have mentioned the place being
full or nearly so – perhaps I chose the wrong two nights. The regular ferry
service between El Hierro (my home) and La Gomera has been withdrawn
and so I will need to await the next “special timetable” to make my next visit.

I expected much more from a restaurant like this. There was neither music nor WiFi. No salt and pepper on the table. The service seemed to be stressed and not very friendly. White wine “blanco afrutado” was only by bottle; they have forgotten my starter; the desert was with red fruits instead of advertised fig confit and typical “Gomeran” biscuit. .. The food was mediocre, the prices for the portions rather high. An experience I don’t have to repeat.

Everyone we spoke to said this was the one restaurant to visit so against our better judgement we booked an evening meal. First impessisons were the total lack of ambience. The staff were just trying too hard and it didn’t come off.
Having said that however, my wife’s rissotto was apparently absolutely delicious. The two fresh fish I was offered were what I’d eaten elsewhere so I chose the lemon sole; big mistake. The texture of the fish and the flavour were most peculiar and this was confirmed when I was woken in the night with griping stomach pains. I think ‘been there dunnit’ is the phrase. Not again.

Trying to find a place for dinner on a Sunday night is not so easy on Gomera. So we stepped into this welcoming looking place which seduced us with a cozy decoration in old local style. The Cress soup for starter was very good but the main dish (octopud salad) was a bit disappointing. The octopus way “chewy” and the promised mango was replaced by apples. Typical dishes of La Gomera that you will want to try
Although La Gomera is the second smallest island of the Canary Islands, it has a great gastronomic richness based on local products that have given rise to one of the tastiest cuisines of the archipelago, such as potatoes, Canarian cheese, gofio or guarapo. Among its most typical dishes we can highlight:
- The almogrote: It is a kind of pate of aged cheese and mojo canario, slightly spicy that is very tasty as its texture melts in the mouth. Perfect as an appetizer to enjoy it spread on bread and with a glass of Gomeran wine.
- Papas arrugadas: It is the star dish of the Canary Islands made with boiled and unpeeled potatoes served as a tapa or as an accompaniment to a meat or fish dish with the traditional sauces of mojo picón and mojo verde.
- Watercress stew: A simple but very tasty stew that everyone likes. Eating it in winter is wonderful. It comes with or without meat (pork ribs), corn and accompanied by a little gofio, an essential ingredient in Canarian cuisine.
- Gofio escaldado: It is actually a typical dish of Tenerife, which is prepared with great art in La Gomera and tastes great. It is made with meat or fish broth over which gofio is poured and then kneaded. You can add extra pork ribs, green mojo or onion to transform it into a main dish as it is usually served as a starter.
- Guarapo: some dishes such as fried eggplants are seasoned with guarapo, the sweet sage extracted from the Canary Island palm tree and reminiscent of honey. It can also be used on meats and the result is delicious.
- Torta de vilana: It is a typical dessert from La Gomera, which has a texture between pudding and sponge cake made with potatoes, almonds and raisins, among other ingredients. It is very appetizing!
- Gofio mousse: It is a simple dessert made with gofio, almonds and guarapo that will delight the sweet tooth. Try it!

Unlike in other countries, tipping in restaurants at the end of a meal is not mandatory in Spain as it is included in the price of the service.

Where to eat in La Gomera: 5 charming places to eat
La Gomera, the quiet island
The island of La Gomera, that jewel in the Atlantic, is not only a pleasure for the eyes, but for all the senses. Its lush vegetation, whitewashed houses and black sandy beaches are much more than the Garajonay National Park, one of the four National Parks of the Canary Islands. Less than half an hour from the island of Tenerife by sea, it still has the charm of the places without tourist overexploitation, and where the landscapes, villages and streets offer us tranquillity and beauty, and if we recently told you in this blog what to see in La Gomera we told you about places to visit on the island, today we tell you where to eat in La Gomera.
A getaway to this Canary Island is an experience on every level, and its delicious gastronomy is one of its great attractions. It is not difficult to find a good place to eat in La Gomera, which has some magnificent restaurants all over the island.
Casa Efigenia is a reference among the restaurants of La Gomera.
Typical dishes of La Gomera that you must try
The gastronomy of the Canary Islands is as intense as its orography. Among the most emblematic products of this fortunate island is almogrote, a mojo that resembles pâté and mixes cured cheese, oil, pepper and sometimes tomato. Its spicy touch makes it ideal with potatoes and bread.
The fish cannot be missing in an island cuisine, and in La Gomera the corvina, the cherne and the vieja are common in a great number of dishes, and in the restaurants we have chosen where to eat in La Gomera they are very well represented.
Mojos, especially pepper mojo and coriander or parsley mojo, are a common accompaniment to many recipes and snacks (simply spread on bread and they are delicious) in the best restaurants on La Gomera.
The wide gastronomy of La Gomera can be tasted in all these restaurants.
The canary gofio was already a fundamental part of the ancient inhabitants of the Canarian archipelago before the Canarian conquest, and continues to be so today. Gofio gomero is characterised by its intense flavour and its mixture of cereals.
The watercress stew is also very popular among the people of Gomera, as well as the extraordinary white wines of Gomera, which go so well with the most typical products of the land.
Finally, we must not forget the desserts, among which the wonderful palm honey. Other highlights of the menus are the leche asada (roast milk), the tortas de vilana and cuajada (curd cakes) and the rosquetes.
After eating in La Gomera, it is always a good idea to rest the meal with a good digestive, such as mistela or gomerón, a wonderful liqueur made from palm honey and grapevine.

Restaurant located in Agulo, its picturesque cobbled streets, and stunning mountain views, are the ideal aperitif to enjoy the flavour of the island of La Gomera with a cuisine based on natural and fresh ingredients from the land and the sea. Fresh fish, prawns with garlic, goat’s meat, almogrote, tuna in mojo sauce, veal cutlet, roast milk or Pantana jam are all sure to please. Traditional and island cuisine in a unique place, as this restaurant is located in what used to be the old school of Agulo, founded in 1927, a perfect place to eat in La Gomera, without a doubt.
Casa Efigenia La Montaña, in Las Hayas
Casa Efigenia La Montaña
Created in the sixties, the restaurant located in Las Hayas is run by Efigenia, a woman born in the land of Gomera, raised among fruits, vegetables and greens, who would later take her from the garden to the kitchen with the best techniques, and from the kitchen to the table with her friendly character and her people skills. Thanks to her, a small corner lost in this dream island has become a reference point for traditional Canarian gastronomy. It is one of the most authentic and traditional corners of the island, and there is no doubt that a good vegetable stew, a gofio escaladón and a fruit salad, accompanied by almogrote, mojo rojo, bread and a warm homemade lemonade, made with so much love, tastes like heaven.
Trattoria Club Laurel, one of the restaurants of the Hotel Jardín Tecina in La Gomera.
Hotel Jardin Tecina
Hotel Jardín Tecina is located in the quiet village of Playa Santiago, on an impressive cliff overlooking the Atlantic. This luxury resort is located in an idyllic spot, from where you can go on excursions to the Garajonay National Park to enjoy its flora and fauna. Crossing its gates means enjoying a unique combination of nature, sport, relaxation and leisure. And no wonder: 70,000 square metres of botanical garden where you can stroll and contemplate the more than fifty plants from all over the world that coexist here. It has five swimming pools, two solariums, four bars and no less than six restaurants to choose from: Restaurante Principal, Club Laurel, Restaurante Gara, Trattoria Club Laurel, Barbacoa Piscina and Tasca Fandango.
El Parador de La Gomera, local produce in delicious dishes
Parador of La Gomera
This Parador Nacional is located in San Sebastián de La Gomera, with an island architecture that takes you back to other times, to the times of the Columbian era. With views of the city and the island of Tenerife, the cosy rooms, the swimming pool and a garden with subtropical species form an ideal setting for tranquillity and enjoyment. With breathtaking views over the ocean, beach, nature and history at hand, the restaurant, rustic and beautiful, offers above all local products such as Gomeran cheese, black potato, black wreckfish, black pig, in updated recipes that will certainly not leave anyone indifferent, such as watercress stew, almogrote, boiled old women and roasted milk with honey from Palma.

Eating in La Gomera – Culinary delights and Restaurants
Eating in La Gomera is a treat by itself. During our visit to this beautiful island, we got to try out some awesome restaurants. There are several specialties that the island is known for and we got to try those too. Join us as we eat our way through the island and visit different restaurants and stores. What does La Gomera have to offer when it comes to food?
Table of Contents
Eating in La Gomera – try these things
The island has some of the same specialties as the other Canary Islands have. One example is the Mojo (a spicy sauce with garlic). And La Gomera also offers some really mean Almogrote and not to forget – the original Palm Honey is made here. Here is a list of our favorite restaurants and the things that you should not miss out on while being on the island. If we are missing something traditional on our list, please let us know so that we can update the list.
No, sorry – if you are looking for amazingly plated food that will look picture perfect on Instagram, you will be disappointed. The food in La Gomera is super good but it does not photograph well. A lot of soups and pastes and stews don’t look great on photos but we can promise you that they are really tasty.
Almogrote – Cheese paste with garlic
This is one thing that needs to be eaten in restaurants. We bought some with us in a gift shop and it tasted nothing like the once that we were served in restaurants. Sure, you can buy it but we recommend that you buy the cheese in La Gomera and then you make it yourself. Almogrote is a paste that you spread on bread. To make the paste, you will need to use a mortar and pestle. Well, if you have a strong blender that can mix the cheese, you can use that too.
We recommend that you always order Almogrote in each restaurant that you visit. You will be surprised that the same dish tastes different every time. We found a recipe for Almogrote so that you can make it yourself.
Almogrote – ingredients
- 500 grams of hard cured cheese.
- 1 chili pepper or chili powder if you can’t find fresh chili.
- 4 tablespoons of pepper.
- 1,5 glasses of olive oil.
- 10 garlic cloves.
- 300 grams of tomatoes (ripe).
This is how you do Almogrote
Mix or mortar all the ingredients together. It’s easier if you first cut the cheese in smaller pieces. Mix it until it becomes a paste. Serve it with bread and a glass of wine. If you want a stronger taste of your cheese paste, leave out the tomatoes. So what does Almogrote taste like? Somewhat like a cheesy tomatoey paste with a kick. We both loved it when we ate it in restaurants. However, we didn’t like the once that we bought in stores. While eating in La Gomera, we ended up trying Almogrote every day!
Gofio – Great to mix into dishes
Gofio is a mixture of roasted corn flour and barley. It’s a sort of Canarian flour made from roasted grains (typically wheat or certain varieties of corn) or other starchy plants (for example beans) and a little salt. It is not only served as an accompaniment to most dishes but also sprinkled into coffee and wine by the people living in La Gomera.
We got to eat Gofio several times during our stay on the island. It’s a really good accessory to food but it’s not that good to eat just the gofio. Probably because it’s like flour. You can buy Gofio in most stores and mix it into most of the dishes that you make. In La Gomera, they use it in almost everything – chocolate, on bread, energy bars and much more. For the islands best Gofio cookies you need to visit Idelina that sells her cookies in the Garajonaj National Park. Read more about it in our previous post.
Papas arrugadas – Canarian Potatoes
This is something special for all of the Canary Islands and not only La Gomera. Papas arrugadas is usually served with a chili pepper garlic sauce, called mojo rojo, or as an accompaniment to meat dishes. The dish is made from small potatoes that are boiled in saltwater. I always liked potatoes and these salty treats are awesome with mojo added to them.
What makes them so special is that they are boiled in saltwater taken from the sea. We liked them in all kinds of dishes and we have also said that we will try to boil our fresh potatoes in saltwater taken from the ocean. We will be back with a verdict.
Palm Honey – a special thing for La Gomera
A visit to La Gomera must include a tasting of the famous Palm Honey. No, it’s not honey that is made out of bees. It’s called palm honey but it’s really palm sap from special palm trees. They harvest the palms and then boil the sap for lots of hours. The result is a syrup that is really sweet.
If you get a chance, try to find a place where you can try the fresh sap. This is not an easy task since it gets ruined really fast and needs to be in a freezer. However, the taste of the fresh sap is somewhat like coconut water. You can visit the Palm honey museum and learn more about harvesting and everything about how they make the palm honey. Read more about our visit to the Casa de la Miel here.
La Gomeran wine
Did you know that “traditional” La Gomera wine is a lot stronger than what we are used to? Unfortunately, most places offer regular wine from La Gomera and not the stronger version. Winemaking in La Gomera started already in 1531. In 2012, they started to study the grapes and today they produce some really high-quality wine. There are about 200 acres of vineyards and about 150 people work with wine production. In all, there are 19 bodegas and 13 of them sell their wines in their bodegas.
You can get great local wine in all of the restaurants around the island. If you want to be part of something more special and learn more about the wine, make sure to be at the visitor center each Friday. On Fridays, there is a new bodega each week that presents their wine. The winemaking is really important and helps to keep the fires in check on the island. Read more about the visitor center and their wine tastings here.
Restaurants to visit while in La Gomera
During our days in La Gomera, we got to try out some really good restaurants. They all had one thing in common – they serve local specialties and they focus on sustainable tourism. Some do it better than others but at least they are all trying. By serving fresh fish and seasonal vegetables, we ended up eating a lot of fish. La Gomeran food is good even if it doesn’t always present itself in a nice way on the plate. A lot of focus in their cooking is to have fresh herbs and spices in their dishes. Eating in La Gomera is a delight that we enjoyed.
Here are the restaurants and places that we visited during our trip to La Gomera. Eating in La Gomera when it’s best!
Try out a Gourmet tasting at the PEG Los Telares
PEG Los Telares is an Ethnographical Park but it is also a shop and a place that offers gourmet tastings of their locally produced products. Here, you will be able to drink local wine and eat goat cheese, figs, Gofio with honey and other treats. You will not get full here, this is a tasting and not a complete dinner.
They also have a gift shop and there they have several of their organic products that you can try out. Try their Almogrote, palm honey and Mojo. This is a great place to stock up on the gifts that you want to bring back home or buy some spices for your own kitchen. Read more about our visit to PEG Los Telares Here.
Restaurant Las Chacaras in Hermigua
Our first evening in La Gomera, we got to try out this awesome restaurant. Las Chácaras is located in Hermigua and it is a popular place for the locals. César was there to take care of us. Unfortunately (in this case), we had one in our party that spoke Spanish. Due to that, I didn’t get all the information on what we were being served.
I do know that we started out with Almogrote and a cheese platter. After that, we got a salad that was mixed with vegetables and fruits. The balsamico on the salad was incredible. Then we got to try grilled goat cheese. I love, love, love cheese and this was incredible. The saltiness from the cheese and some sort of honey sauce in the perfect combination. The next dish was some kind of soup (didn’t get the name of that one). Well, first if it was a soup and then César added Gofio and the soup turned into a stew. They were both equally good. Ok, the soup (and stew) didn’t photograph well but the taste was great!
Sharing dishes at Las Chacaras
We were four people in the restaurant. Since this was our first evening on the island, we let César choose what to eat. After the soup that turned into a stew, it was time for fish. And after the fish, it was time for goats meat and Papas arrugadas. When we were all really satisfied with all the food it was still time for dessert.
The desert was made out of Gofiomousse with popcorn. It was a totally different dish but we all liked it! The whole experience was great and César was such a gracious host. The only thing I was missing, was to get all the dishes names in English. I hade a hard time to get it translated and I’m not sure how good the translation was. But we all agreed that this restaurant is great. The name “Las Chacacas” translates something like castanets. This family place is well worth a visit. And we liked to share all the dishes with our newfound friends.

Restaurant Gastro Tasca Estadio
A really nice restaurant in Hermiuga. Here we got to start our meal with a lentil soup. No, like most traditional food in La Gomera, it doesn’t look that good but the taste was perfect. After the warming soup, we got to try the rabbit. It was ok but I wish that there had been some more sauce or something that went with the rabbit. The rabbit came with a little bit of gravy. Another thing that I was missing was vegetables.
After the rabbit, we got fish with onions and mussels. And finally, we got dessert. As always they serve a lot of food in La Gomera and restaurant Gastro Tasca Estadio is no exception. If you enjoy a lot of food, you will be eating in La Gomera like crazy!
Address: Ctra. General, 129, 38820 Hermigua.
Opening hours: Monday – Friday 06:00 – 10:00. Saturdays and Sundays 10:00 – 22:00.

La Casa Creativa / Bar Terraza Pedro
If you are lucky you will meet Carmen during your visit to this Tapas place. Carmen is the owner of this place and you can feel hear warmth an friendliness from far away. Here, we ended ut eating the best seafood salad and the Almogrote was really good. We decided to sit outside but first, we went inside and looked at the display of foods so that we would know what to choose.
We ended up ordering several different tapas dishes and we all enjoyed them really much. This was also the one and only time where we didn’t get completely stuffed during a restaurant visit but that was because we ordered the tapas (small dishes). This is one of our favorite restaurants of all that we tried on the island.
Address: Ctra. General, 156, 38820 Hermigua.
Opening hours: Monday – Friday 09:00 – 23:00. Saturdays and Sundays closed.
Phone number for reservations: +34 922 88 09 91
Restaurante La Vieja Escuela
This restaurant serves food that is traditional to La Gomera. We started out with a soup that was really good (even if it didn’t look so tasty). After the soup, we were served white fish with Papas Arugadas and it tasted like a real home-cooked meal. One thing that we noticed was that there was so much food that it would be impossible to eat it all. Apparently, the locals always serve so much food because it’s not supposed to be finished.
If you would eat all the food that they are serving, it means that they didn’t give you enough food and that’s not ok. I get the point but at the same time, it feels like a lot of food gets wasted. And after eating all that food – in came the dessert. If I remember it correctly none of us was able to finish the dessert even if it was good. Eating in La Gomera is awesome!
Address: Calle Poeta Trujillo Armas, 2, 38830 Agulo.
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 11:00 – 21.00.
Phone number: +34 922 14 60 04.
Hotel Bar Sonia
This restaurant is located in Vallehermoso and some of the people that joined the press trip got to stay at the hotel too. This place is like walking into someone’s home. And the food tastes like it’s homemade. Here we ate a really good soup. I went bold here and added some Gofio into it and it became more like a stew.
And then the food just kept coming. We got a stew with Canarian potatoes and a fresh salad. This restaurant is also a bar and it seemed like it was a popular place for the locals. The vegetarian option was a pasta dish and it had a lot of flavors. When looking at the reviews of this place – everyone says that the food is good and that the people working here are awesome. We can’t do anything else but agree with the rest of the reviews.
Address: Plaza de Chipude, s/n, 38840 Vallehermoso.
Phone number: +34 922 80 41 58
Restaurante Abisinia in Valle Gran Rey
A restaurant in the popular town of Valle Gran Rey. Restaurante Abisinia serves some really great dishes. This was our first time where we got a great steak during our trip to La Gomera. Mine was served with a pepper sauce and Mini chose one with mushroom sauce. Both of them were great!
With the steak, we were served both potatoes and rice. I didn’t think that I would like the combo – I mean don’t you choose between one or the other? Apparently not because this combo was good! We also got the cutest dessert ever! Talk about creativity – they wrote their restaurant’s name in chocolate! Abisinia was one of the best places that we visited while eating in La Gomera.
Address: Calle La, Calle Cuesta de Abisinia, 38870 Valle Gran Rey.
Opening hours: Monday – Saturday 17:00 – 23.00. Sundays are closed.
Phone number: +34 922 80 58 93.
Hotel Gran Rey
This was the only place that we visited that served an all you can eat buffet. There was so much to choose from that it was impossible to try it all. They had a huge selection with vegetarian alternatives and that’s awesome. Hotel Gran Rey is, like the name says, also a hotel where you can spend some time. For people that want to be close to the beach, this is a good option.
I do think that their restaurant has a “regular” menu too but the buffet was tasty so there’s no need to eat anything else. The size of the buffet was so big that you can eat it for one week straight and still not try it all. We recommend that you check this place out when you are eating in La Gomera.
Address: Av. Marítima, 1, 38870 Valle Gran Rey.
Phone number: +34 922 80 58 59.

Fans of meat dishes should try local Ropa Vieja restaurants. The recipe for this dish was also invented in the Middle Ages. A dish is prepared from beef or pork, these types of meat are often combined with poultry meat. It is very reminiscent of vegetable stew, in which onions, tomatoes and other types of vegetables are necessarily added during the cooking process. Sometimes vegetables are served as a separate side dish, and fried bananas are considered the most unusual side dish for a dish.
Vegetarians and everyone who loves vegetable soups will be interested in trying potaje vegetable stew. Despite the fact that the dish is prepared exclusively from vegetables, it turns out to be very satisfying. Today, there are dozens of ways to cook this popular soup on the island. The main feature of the stew is that it is cooked for a very long time, so it turns out to be very thick.

Highlights
The round islet of La Gomera is part of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The area of the island is 378 km², and the population is 16 thousand people. This is a rather mountainous island, along which long winding roads are laid. On the coast there are picturesque steep cliffs. There are few beaches on the island, but deep green valleys are found in abundance, bordered by narrow fields rising to the slopes of the mountains. These valleys are often shrouded in clouds driven by the trade winds. A third of the island is divided into 17 nature reserves created on the initiative of UNESCO.
You can get to La Gomera by ferry or plane from neighboring islands. The airport is located in the southern part of the island, near Playa de Santiago, and the port is in the capital San Sebastian.
San Sebastian
San Sebastian (population – 6200 people) – a small town on the island of La Gomera, where in September 1492, Columbus’ ships stopped to stock up on water and food. Everything here reminds me of Columbus. On the main square – Plaza de las Americas – a mosaic is laid out, which depicts the route of the Columbus expedition. Under the big tree is the customs building. It is believed that Columbus drew water from the local well and went to the New World. From the square departs the only more or less extended street, Calle del Medio, also associated with the name of the great navigator. The Virgen de la Asuncion church was built between 1490 to 1510. It seems so old that it is easy to imagine how Columbus prayed in its gloomy nave in 1492 – this, by the way, is reminiscent of a memorial plaque. A little further is the modest home of Columbus (open: Mon-Fri 10.00-13.00, 16.00-18.00, admission is free), where the navigator lived during a stop on La Gomera. The local authorities have restored the house, and today a collection of pre-Columbian ceramics from Latin America, as well as items related to the Columbus expedition, are on display here.
North
The road from San Sebastian goes up steeply and the views are just amazing. At 1,487m, La Gomera’s highest mountain, Alto de Garajonay, is not too big by Canarian standards. However, the whole island will seem to you a frightening labyrinth of fantastic gorges. The small town of Hermingua is the largest in La Gomera after San Sebastian. Take a look at Los Telares Craft Center. From here you have a beautiful view of the green, fertile valley. Taste the local liqueur “Mistela”, watch how women weave blankets and rugs on old looms. Then you will get to Agulo, a pretty little town located right on the cliff. Its main attraction (in addition to the picturesque location) is the church of San Marco, crowned with a dome. This church was once a mosque. A mighty laurel tree grows on the square in front of the church.
In front of the town of Las Rozas, turn away from the sea and enter the Garajonay National Park. In 1986, UNESCO included this region in the list of the World Heritage of Humanity. In the tourist center of Juego de Bolas (open: daily 9.30-16.30) there is a small ethnographic museum and a garden of local herbs. Here you can get all the necessary information.
The road continues through a 3984 hectare park and leads you to a restaurant near La Laguna Grande. This is a cozy, hospitable place, which is very popular with tourists. The restaurant cannot boast of a beautiful view – thick fog almost constantly hangs here, enveloping old, moss-covered trees. Homer is almost constantly shrouded in thick fog driven by the trade winds. Due to the high humidity, subtropical plants feel great here – laurel, cedar, juniper and olives, ferns and epiphytes (non-parasitic plants that live on other plants).
South
If you head south from San Sebastian, you will pass three mighty volcanoes and come to the winding road of Degollada de Peras. It offers magnificent views to the north and south. Follow the road to a fork and then turn left instead of right towards Garajonay and take a very winding road to Playa de Santiago (and the airport).
This is the second seaside town on the island besides San Sebastian. There is a small port and a small pebble beach. But the main attraction is the picturesque cliffs located to the east of the town. Here, the Norwegian shipbuilder Fred Olsen created the magnificent Tichina Garden resort, where guests live in Canarian-style villas.
On your way back you pass the airport. At Igualero turn left (west). A small path leads you to Las Ayas. Stop in the town of El Sercado, where traditional pottery is still made in a unique way – without the potter’s wheel. Here you can see the masters at work, and then purchase the results of their work. The prices will surprise you – they are as steep as the cliffs of La Gomera.
From Las Ayas head towards Arura. In Arura, turn left and you will come to a small wine cellar selling wines from La Gomera and other Canary Islands. Homer has about 300 hectares of vineyards. Grapes are grown here on steep slopes and small terraces. Stop at the highest point where the observation deck and Escuela restaurant, built by Cesar Manrique, are located. From here you have a magnificent view of the green valley of Gran Rey. The locals have built many terraces in this deep fertile gorge and grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
Europeans who come to the Canary Islands in search of peace and quiet love to relax here.
Where the valley goes to the sea, there is a small town of La Calera with many boutiques and restaurants. The small town of Balle Gran Rey has a black sand beach, several bars and restaurants, and a diving center. Returning to the valley, follow the Arure and turn right at the T-junction. This road passes through the southern part of the national park and will take you to San Sebastian.
Island delicacy
Guarapo is a La Gomera delicacy. For its preparation, the juice of the Canarian palm is boiled down over low heat until it turns into a thick, dark, honey-like syrup.

Getting to know Homer’s island. Useful information for tourists
La Gomera looks like a baby compared to other islands of the Canary archipelago. But believe me, in this large family, the baby grows up as a beloved child. It is located in the western part of the Canaries, and, as it should be for the family of these islands, it is surrounded by the ocean.
The main thing about the island of Gomera
The harbor of San Sebastián de la Gomera.
This is a place for true connoisseurs of unbeaten hiking trails.
Climate
You can relax here all year round – the weather conditions allow, although the period from May to October is considered a resort. The average annual temperature on the island fluctuates within 25 °C, in winter it is a little cooler – about +20 °C, in summer +26..+28 °C. The ocean water temperature rarely drops below 20°C. From September to April, most of the precipitation falls, mainly in the highlands of the island.
Now the island of Gomera is a corner of primeval nature, with preserved traditions of the tribes living here for many centuries. There is not much land suitable for accommodation with comfort: the island is dissected by mountains that converge almost in the center. Such a division brings confusion to the plant world: in the southern part it is poor – during the summer everything dries up a lot. But in the north – a sea of \u200b\u200bgreenery. The center of the island went to impenetrable forests.
How to get there
By air: there is an airport on the island of Gomera, but it does not accept international flights – it is small and not suitable for this. Only local Binter Canarias flights fly to Tenerife.
By boat: you can get to Gomera by ferry from other Canary Islands: Tenerife, La Palma and Hierro. Most tourists come from Tenerife. Ferries leave from the port of Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife. Currently, the islands of Tenerife and Gomera are connected by ferries of such companies as:
- Fred Olsen Express
- Naviera Armas
Both companies offer several flights daily on weekdays to the capital of Gomera – the city of San Sebastian – they also carry tourists back. Travel time one way takes from half an hour to an hour.
The price of a round-trip ticket for an adult ranges from €60-65. And yes, take your children with you, preferably from 4 to 11 years old. A ticket for them will cost almost two times cheaper – €35. There are other discounts as well. You can check the information on the official website of the Fred Olsen company.
By car: of course, you can travel around the island on your own, but then you can not do without a car – it is usually hired in Tenerife. The minimum price for round-trip tickets for two adults with a car on a ferry from Tenerife to Gomera is around €140. Keep in mind: without a rented vehicle, it will be impossible to see the entire island in a few days.
Where to stay
Currently, there are more than 100 hotels and apartments on the island where tourists can stay, although even 5 years ago they could be counted on the fingers. It is clear that the cost of living in hotels varies quite widely: rooms in 1-3 star hotels will cost from €50 and more for 1 day. Four stars are even more expensive: something like €200 per day. Most of the hotels are concentrated in the town of Playa de Santiago, the sunniest area of the island.
Local cuisine
Gourmets, you will be welcome here! National cuisine on Homer is beyond praise. Local chefs skillfully prepare rice and potato dishes, paying tribute to cultural traditions. Cheese lovers will certainly be offered different types of goat cheese, delicious cheese buns. It is worth trying special, unique dishes:
- Cuban rice with fried bananas;
- almogrote – a spicy appetizer made from cheese and tomato with spices;
- guarapo is palm syrup boiled until thick to make delicious palm honey, locals add it to most dishes; and if you mix palm honey with moonshine, you get a Homeron cocktail;
- well, and so that all this is absorbed faster, and the measured island life sparkles with new colors, the local strong wine is Mistella.
Where to eat
One of the best restaurants on the island is the Mango Restaurant. You can also find the whole variety of national cuisine in the La Tasca restaurant, lovers of evening solitude will appreciate the romantic atmosphere reigning here: if you are going to invite your companion to try on a diamond ring – you are definitely here!
Vegetarians should visit the La Montana restaurant, where gourmet dishes are prepared from simple vegetables and fruits. There is also an international restaurant – Habibi. Here you will be offered barbecue, a juicy steak, a variety of seafood dishes, and, of course, a large selection of alcoholic beverages.
If you are traveling with your family, you will love the Tagoror restaurant, where visitors with children are offered a special menu, and during the day there is always an assortment of special budget lunches. The El Descansillo restaurant is recommended for lovers of fish dishes. For those tourists who save money and also love simple and hearty food, you should look into the La Molina restaurant.
Entertainment
The island is dotted with a network of hiking trails. But if walking is too slow and tiring for you, then you can hire a bicycle, a horse, or even, if anyone cares about the poor animal, a donkey.
All you need to know about the fauna of the island is that you will not find poisonous animals and insects here. Or, more importantly, they won’t meet you.
Tired of moving on the ground – go to the skies. Comfortable and safe gliders and hang gliders are at your service. Empty and lonely in the sky in the company of clouds and birds? Employees of the local company Fisch & Co, which specializes in working with divers, will organize an excursion to the depths of the sea for you: you will definitely have a great rest there – numerous local residents are unobtrusive and laconic. Moreover, you can later try to catch the fish you like from the shore – after all, all conditions have been created here for fishing enthusiasts.
Well, if you still decide to spend time on solid ground, away from extreme sensations, well-groomed golf courses are at your service.
Attractions Gomera
Garajonay National Park: Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. At this point, the peak of Garajonay rises above the island – the highest point on the map of Gomera. The amazing flora in the park is due to unique weather conditions: in the central part of the island there is very high humidity and constant light fog. And even if you were not lucky enough to be born in the Mesozoic era, in Garajonay Park you can correct this unfortunate misunderstanding: the local nature looked like this many millions of years ago.
In the south of the island is the natural park of La Caldera, which is a large crater of an extinct volcano. In the southwestern part there is one of the most beautiful landscapes of Gomera – the Gran Rey Valley or, as it is also called, the “Valley of the Great Kings”. Here, it will be interesting for tourists to look at the huge groves of palm trees and terraces carved into the slopes of the rocks, which resemble steps of stairs.
On the coast of Vallehermoso, in the northwestern part of the island, it is worth noting another attraction – basalt columns – the rocks of Los Organos, they rise from the sea like organ pipes. But you can only see them from the sea, on land this part of the island is prohibited for visiting.
The capital of San Sebastian de la Gomera is a small cozy town with colorful houses, narrow streets and a population of about eight thousand inhabitants. It is one of the starting points for tourists who visit the island for one day. They come here on a ferry from Tenerife, and at this time there is a real hell of social phobia – hundreds of people fill the streets and a minute ago the calm streets are seething from the ubiquitous travelers.
Special attention in the city should be paid to Plaza de las Americas, where there are numerous cafes. A little to the west you can see the Gothic Count’s Tower – a symbol of the capital of the island. In general, they make good money here on the name of Columbus, so be prepared to buy souvenirs. Such sights as the church of Iglesia de Asuncion are also associated with him, where he was blessed to discover America and the Pozo de Colon well, from where they allegedly drew water for long-distance navigation. Architectural sights are not limited to these objects. Surely you will be interested to look at the authentic monastery of San Pedro and the equally majestic Cathedral of San Salvador.
Beaches
The coast of Gomera Island is mostly steep and rocky, so it is not the best place for tourists who like to wallow on the beach. But, nevertheless, the sun-warmed sand and salty ocean water is enough for everyone. The sand here is volcanic, black, but for those who like to leave pebbles in the waves, there are also places strewn with pebbles.

P.S.
It cannot be said that La Gomera is strikingly different from the other islands of the Canary archipelago. The same water, sun, rocks, beaches and abundant vegetation. The only thing, oh Homer is less visited by tourists, and staying here is conducive to a calm, measured rest. This means that this is one of the best places on earth in order to take a short – and whoever has the means and a long one – a respite from the stresses of the modern civilized world. Meet me on the island of Gomera?;)
La Gomera in the Canary Islands, photo
To the southwest of Tenerife is the most mysterious and atmospheric island of the Canary Islands – La Gomera. Covered in a mysterious haze, Gomera Island attracts thousands of tourists and is especially popular in winter.
The island owes its name not to cartoon dad Simpson, and not even to the ancient Greek poet, but to the grandson of the famous Noah, who built a giant ark. Gomera Island is located 30 kilometers from Tenerife and, thanks to such a favorable location, attracts crowds of tourists every day who cross to the island, both independently and in excursion groups.
Getting to Gomera Island is easy. Passenger-and-freight ferries operate from the port of Los Cristianos, representing three independent carriers at once. The fastest of them is the ferry from the Fred Olsen company, which will take you to Homer’s Island in just half an hour. Several flights go to the island at once, but in order to have enough time to explore Homer Island, we recommend using the very first morning flight. The exact timetable and ticket prices can be found on the official website of the carrier.
Without a car or without an organized excursion program, there will be nothing to do on the island of Gomera. On foot, you will not have time to get around all the sights of the island, and an attempt to explore the island, based on the knowledge of the Internet or a guidebook, will be something like an embrace of the immense. Only by moving by car, you will have a chance to see everything in one day. A little trick. If you decide to rent a car, then pay attention to flexible discount systems under the programs “car + 2 tourists”, “car + 3 tourists” and so on. It will be much cheaper than buying individual tickets for each tourist.
The attractions of La Gomera welcome you as soon as you arrive at the capital’s port and main town of San Sebastian de la Gomera. Sounds good, looks even better. All roads in the city lead to the Count’s Tower – the most important point in the tourist route of any excursion. The tower is famous thanks to Christopher Columbus, who, back in 1492, made an appointment with his mistress Beatrice de Bobadilla within its walls. A sultry woman, the dream of not only a poet, but also a navigator, and concurrently also the ruler of the island of Homer. Every stone, every crack in the facade remembers Christopher Columbus. There is even a well preserved here, in which the famous navigator drew water. And the water in the well is not easy. As the inscription on the tablet says, it was with this water that Christopher Columbus christened America. Here is the Church of the Ascension, where Senor Columbus prayed before the conquest of America.
If we talk about the climate of the island of Gomera, then it does not differ from Tenerife. The island is also surrounded by high mountains, which easily hold back the clouds and the weather on Homer is dry and hot (For the information of tourists, excellent photos come out on the island of Homer!). The north of the island is covered with dense laurel forests – the largest in all the Canary Islands. The forest is protected by the state and officially given the status of a national park. Many tourists make a trip to the island of Gomera just for the sake of walking through this unique forest. Several hiking trails lead to another national park – Garahanay. The walk will give you a lot of pleasure, especially if you take into account that entry by car is prohibited there.
And the local cuisine will certainly not leave anyone indifferent. The island cuisine of Homer should be separated from the rest of the Canarian treats. What is only worth local palm honey, which is used as a sweet addition to a wide variety of dishes. In fact, distant Latin America had a huge impact on local food. The fact is that a large number of Canarians left for permanent residence in Venezuela and Cuba. Therefore, it is not surprising that when they returned, they brought with them samples of local cuisine. Here you can taste real Cuban rice with fried banana and other Caribbean delicacies.
Be sure to visit the Palmarejo restaurant, located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, perched on top of a cliff. The view from there is unforgettable, and the dishes served in the restaurant are the most delicious on the entire island of Gomera. Here you can order the usual European dishes or Homeric delicacies.
Basalt pillars are located in the north of Gomera Island. In another way, they are also called giant organ pipes. Indeed, if you fantasize, you can find a certain similarity. True, you can watch the fabulous landscape only from the water. It is enough to order a short excursion or rent a boat, and then swim up to the basalt formations as close as possible.
The locals speak excellent Spanish, a little worse English and not very good Russian. But best of all they manage to communicate in silbo. This is a unique and one-of-a-kind means of communication based on a whistle. And now attention, the lesson of the Homeric language: put two fingers in your mouth and try to blow as you should. Use part of your hand as a sound resonator and part as an amplifier. It’s not very clear, but, therefore, native speakers will explain it to you best by whistling a couple of lessons. The vocabulary of silbo has several hundred words, and if you “speak” this language correctly, then the interlocutor will hear you, being at a distance of 5 kilometers or even more. Why mobile communications, if there is a free way to communicate.
All detailed information about the island of Gomera can be found on the official website of the island at www.gomera-island.com.
The information on the site is not presented in Russian or even in the Silbo language, but only in Spanish and English.

La Gomera – Canary Islands
Island La Gomera (La Gomera) tourists appreciate primarily for its primeval nature. Landscapes amaze with the greenery of steep slopes, which are cut by parallel winding lines of terraces. Such a relief of Homera has always made it difficult to communicate between the villages. Until now, many areas of the island have retained their virginity. Most impressive is the unexpectedly dense vegetation on the central plateau, where a thousand-year-old laurel forest stands in eternal fog.
La Gomera is located just 30 km from Tenerife. From here, most tourists come for a one-day tour of the island. Gomera tours start from the southern part of the island of Tenerife. Ferries depart to the island 3-4 times a day. However, a full visit to this island takes more time than a day trip. Due to difficult roads, it is impossible to see all its sights in such a short time. The best way to get to know the beauties of Gomera is to stay there for a few days and walk or bike along the numerous paths and calm roads of the island.
La Gomera a true natural relic. In the preglacial period, laurel thickets occupied a vast territory of the subtropical zone. Today, this type of forest is found only in Macronesia (Madeira Islands, Cape Verde Islands, Wild Islands, Azores and Canary Islands). On La Gomera, unlike other islands of the Canary archipelago, there have been no volcanic eruptions in the last two million years. Therefore, the ancient flora is better preserved here. The highlands of the island have become a giant greenhouse that has given shelter to almost 400 species of plants that disappeared in Europe and Africa millions of years ago. Among them there are some that you will not find anywhere else in the world.
La Gomera is called the island of Columbus (Isla Colombina) – the capital of the island of San Sebastian was the last stop of the famous navigator in 1492 before the famous journey to the shores of the unknown mainland.
Cities and resorts:
San Sebastian de La Gomera is the capital of the island and a small cozy town. Every day, when the ferry from Tenerife arrives and the tourists leave, the city comes to life. The road from the port to the city passes through the Plaza de las Americas, shaded by laurels, with many street cafes.
To the west of the square rises the Count’s Tower (Torre del Conde), built in 1447 by the first Spanish ruler. It is the only surviving fragment of the city’s fortifications and reminds of the tragic events of 1448. Beatriz de Bobadilla, wife of Erman Peraza Jr. (Hernán Peraza “el Joven”), barricaded herself in the walls of the tower after the Guanches killed her husband, who had seduced a local princess. When help arrived from Gran Canaria, Beatrice retaliated by ordering the execution of almost all Guanche men.
The main church of the island is Iglesia de Asunción (Nuestra Señora de la Asunción): as the story goes, Christopher Columbus prayed in this church before continuing his first journey. They say that before sailing to the New World, Columbus stayed in a house on Real 56 Street, which currently bears the name of the navigator (Casa de Colun). Another attraction dating back to the time of Columbus is well (el Pozo de la Aguada), located in the courtyard of the former customs house and has the inscription: “America was baptized with water from this source. ”
Playa de Santiago (Playa de Santiago) This small tourist center is located next to the fishing village in the sunniest and southern area of Gomera. The island’s airport is located a few kilometers from the resort. Here you can taste delicious fresh fish and enjoy a quiet relaxing holiday on the beach.
Attractions and entertainment:
Garajonay National Park (El Parque Nacional de Garajonay) occupies 10% of the island and is the largest area of the oldest woodland in the archipelago. The park was created to preserve relic vegetation. At 1986 was declared by UNESCO as a heritage of mankind. Thanks to the unique weather conditions, the park has an amazing flora. The constant light fog that forms when cool Atlantic winds collide with warm breezes creates very high humidity. This contributes to the rapid growth of about 450 species of trees and plants. Here you can imagine what the Mediterranean forest looked like before the last ice age.
Gran Rey Valley (El Parque Rural de Valle Gran Rey) is a valley of unique beauty in the southwest of the island. It is located in a gorge between two gentle hills. The valley impresses with its man-made terraces and natural ravines.
On the coast of Vallehermoso (Vallehermoso), in the northwest of the island, it is worth looking at the Los Organos basalt columns rising from the sea, similar to organ pipes. Their height reaches 80 meters.
La Gomera is associated with the name of Christopher Columbus, who stayed here three times: in 1492, 1493 and 1498. The island provided his flotilla with food, fresh drinking water and was a convenient starting point for his historical expeditions. There is also a legend about the romance of Columbus with Beatrice de Babadilla. Columbus forever remained the unofficial patron of the island. Fiesta Colombinas on September 6 marks his first trip.
