City tours, excursions and tickets in Lanzarote and surroundings

Moving around in Spain – transportation

In addition, traveling on a personal or rented car is also possible in Spain. Although the quality of roads here are not the best in Europe, it is quite acceptable for comfortable travel. The price of gasoline in Spain is quite expensive and there are a lot of toll roads. This should be taken into account in advance when planning your budget. There are also systems of strict fines, so it is advisable not to violate the traffic rules. The fine on an average car is about $ 40 per day. It is therefore not advisable to travel by cars in large cities, as it is very easy to get a fine of 85 Euros for incorrect parking. There is also the likelihood of traffic jams ruining your vacation plans. Bicycles which are available for hire are a good option in Madrid and other cities. There are chic bike trails in all regions. You can also rent a motorcycle or a scooter. Taxi in Spain is quite expensive. A ride on a taxi costs a minimum of 2 Euros. A kilometer costs around 1.2 Euros, excluding baggage fee.

Economy roadmap of Spain

About 2.5% of the country’s total population is engaged in agriculture. The main focus is on growing grapes for wine, citrus, olives (for conservation and production of olive oil). About 20% of the entire crop area has wheat cultivated on it and 60%, vegetables. On the rest of the territory is cultivated rice, almonds and tobacco. Spain also has a huge fishing fleet which is considered the largest in Europe. The country holds a leading position in the top ten countries for the extraction and processing of seafood and fish. Livestock breeding is also developing successfully. The annual production of cars, spare parts and accessories is 49 billion Euros, which is about 6% of the country’s total GDP. It is worth noting that the country ranks first in the world market for the production of commercial vehicles.

3 Most Scenic beaches in Lanzarote

Since I prefer photographing scenery over sunbathing, I am starting with the most scenic beaches to admire in Lanzarote which I have also included in my top things to do in Lanzarote.

1. Papagayo Beach

Why visit Papagayo beach?

Among the most scenic beaches in Lanzarote is the famous Playa de Papagayo. Located in the wild area in the South of the island, it is a beautiful cove with golden sand and emerald water. Thanks to the steep cliffs around, you are sheltered from the wind.
It is the oldest part of the island, geologically speaking and it has fascinating colours.
According to many website it is the best beach in Lanzarote, well the most beautiful. I agree that it has something special, probably due to its age and desert-like landscape.

Good to know:

  • Good for sunbathing and floating
  • Not easy to access – 40min walk from East Playa Blanca or boat or bumpy dirt track
  • 2 bars at Papagayo, no other facilities
  • Very busy in peak season from mid-day
  • Easy parking (once you have driven the dirt track)
  • See more photos and info on my article about the Papagayo Beaches

Staying near Papagayo beach:

Papagayo is a wild beach. There are no hotels at the beach
The closest places to stay are in the resort town of Playa Blanca. Check out the best rated accommodations in Playa Blanca.

2. Famara Beach

Why visit Famara beach?

Famara Beach is one of the rare beaches on the West Coast of Lanzarote, because it is either covered with lava or with cliffs. Famara is at the foot of the cliff, a large expanse of sand with small sand dunes. It is considered a photographers’ paradise, especially at sunset when the cliffs are hit by the sun, changing colour and reflecting on the wet sand.
It is said that Famara was one of César Manrique’s favorite places. And it is definitively one of the best Lanzarote beaches

Good to know:

  • Not good for swimming
  • Many surfers and windsurfers
  • Many photographers at sunset – this is the place to be!
  • Lots of parking spaces along the sand dunes
  • There is nothing right on the beach but the Village of La Caleta de Famara at the South end has some restaurants.

Staying near Famara beach:

Famara has a little village and a “holiday village” with rental options. Check out the best rated accommodations in Famara.
I stayed just a few minute drive from Famara in a quiet and isolated guesthouse. Loved it! Check out Finca Las Laderas.

3. El Golfo

Why visit El Golfo beach?

This one is definitively not for swimming and sunbathing, but it is one of the most fascinating places in Lanzarote. The half volcano crater meets the ocean and inside, a lagoon has formed and turned green due to the combination of Sulfur and an algae.
The colours are spectacular as well, especially at sunset, with the black sand, red and yellow rocks and green lake. They have set up a platform for you to admire the scenery.

Good to know:

  • Not for swimming
  • Easy parking
  • Restaurant at the bottom of the carpark and in the town nearby
  • Learn more about the Green lagoon

Staying near El Golfo beach:

The village of El Golfo on the West coast is considered one of the most romantic places to stay in Lanzarote because you can watch sunset every evening. Check out the accommodations in El Golfo.

All my favorite beaches are including in my Travel Guide eBook that helps you easily plan your trip:

3 Most Dreamy Lanzarote beaches – pictures

Now I am going the cheat a little. Because my selection of the next 3 beaches are not technically on Lanzarote. They are on a smaller island North of Lanzarote called La Graciosa.
As I said, Lanzarote does not have a lot of sand so the beach there are not the dreamier. If you are looking for fine sand and turquoise water, I recommend taking the ferry from Orzola to get to La Graciosa and hire a 4WD taxi to reach one of its amazing beaches.
Book your ferry ride here

4. Playa Francesa

Why visit Playa Francesa beach?

It is the most visited beaches on the island because it can be reached on foot from the ferry pier. It is a beautiful round beach with Montana Amarilla in the background. Quite a dreamy location to spend the day, isn’t it?

Good to know:

  • To reach the beach, you can either walk for under 1 hour (partly in the sand) along the water and lagoon like area or take one of the 4WD taxis
  • There are no roads on La Graciosa
  • There are no facilities and nothing at the beach. Take all you need
  • Bring plenty of water, there is absolutely no shade there or on the way.

5. Playa Amarilla

Why visit Amarilla beach?

This is the most sheltered beach on La Graciosa. IT is right at the foot of Montana Amarilla with its yellow/orange rocky side shaped by the wind and water.
The contrast of the water and the volcano is mesmerizing.

Good to know:

  • You have to walk up and down from Playa Francesa to reach this beach. Wear proper shoes because the walk down is a little slippery
  • No facilities at all
  • Bring plenty of water, there is absolutely no shade there or on the way.
  • The 4WD cannot take you there. It stops at Playa Francesa

6. Playa de las Conchas

Why visit La Conchas beach?

If you are looking of an even wilder beach with lots of space, I recommend going to La Conchas at the North West end of La Graciosa.
Hire a 4WD taxi to get you there.
There is a vast expanse of golden sand facing Isla de Montana Clara.
Photographers will love the sand dunes and the intense colours.

Good to know:

  • For those looking for a peaceful environment
  • No facilities at all
  • If you don’t take the 4WD taxi, the walk will be very long under the harsh sun!

Staying in La Graciosa

If you want peaceful holidays, far from the crowds and easier access to those beaches, you can spend the night in La Graciosa; There are a few accommodation options to choose from. Check them out.

2 Quietest secluded beaches in Lanzarote

Don’t like the big crowds? Looking for the quietest beaches in Lanzarote?
Well, because of the low number of beaches, there is always people everywhere, especially in high season. But below are a few options where you can feel a bit more quite.

7. Quemada Beach

Why visit Quemada beach?

Quemada is a small fishing village on the East Coast of Lanzarote, South of Puerto del Carmen.
The main area is black peeble, but if you walk of the South side, under the hills, you can find some black sand to settle on.
The area is great for a lunch break with good fish and tapas rich by the sea.

Good to know:

  • The sandy are is sheltered from the wind, which is a great bonus in the Canary islands
  • No facilities but there are restaurants in the small village

8. North Caletones

Why visit the North Caletones?

On the North shore of Lanzarote, is an area mixing white sand with black lava rock. It is quite fascinating. There are several areas where you can park and walk down by the water. The contrasts of colours are great and there is hardly anyone.
Most of them are not really practical to lay down or swim because of the volcanic rock, but you can stop at Caleton Blanco where you can find a shallow lagoon which is great to refresh on a hot day.
A hidden gem off the beaten track (see my list).

Good to know:

  • Small parking areas by the road on the way to Orzola (often opposite the sea) and a large carpark at the lagoon
  • The GPS coordinates of all those spots are in my eBook: Explore and Photograph Lanzarote
  • No facilities
  • Shallow waters at the lagoon great for soaking

2 Best beaches in Lanzarote for Sunbathing

If you are looking for sandy area ideal for sunbathing and without the people walking around in the middle of the town, the best beaches in Lanzarote would be the neighbours to Papagayo (which I mentioned in #1): the main one is Playa Mujeres, and then you have a series of other coves

9 & 10. Playa Mujeres,  Playa del Pozo and neighbours

Why visit Playa Mujeres beach?

Playa Mujeres is a long stretch of golden sand with great emerald waters.
It is between Playa Banca and the famous Papagayo Beach.

Next to it are another sandy coves. The biggest one is Playa del Pozo

Good to know:

  • There is a carpark at Playa Mujeres, but none for the other beaches until Playa de Papagayo
  • You have to pay to reach it by car
  • You can easily walk from Playa Blanca to this beach
  • No facilities
Not much shade of protection from the sun
  • Those beaches are shared with nudists
  • Learn more on my Papagayo beaches article

Staying in Lanzarote near the Papagayo Beaches

Papagayo is a wild beach. There are no hotels at the beaches

4 Best Lanzarote beaches with facilities

If you want to have all the facilities nearby and don’t mind the crowds, then the best beaches in Lanzarote for you are the ones in the resort towns.
I thought the most beautiful ones were in Playa Blanca, which is one of the great places to stay in Lanzarote

11. Beaches in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca has a few sandy areas, some are really not big.
The most famous ones are Playa Flamingo and Playa Dorada.
They are right by the promenade that goes all the way along the waterfront to the Rubicon Marina.
And then you can walk to the Papagayo beaches

See best rated accommodations in Playa Blanca

12. Beaches in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is the largest resort town in Lanzarote. It has the biggest beaches right in town.
It is very crowded at high season but you can find some great options at other times.
You can opt for big sandy area that is Playa Grande, or little rocky coves depending on your preferences.

  • Playa Grande is 1.2km of sand with normally calm water and amenities
  • Playa Chica is a very small coves with volcanic rocks on each side, so it is great for snorkelling
  • Smaller coves, just walk along the water front and take side streets
  • To the North of Puerto del Carmen is a large expanse of sand: Matagorda Beach I did not find it very enjoyable, but it might be better during high season

See best rated accommodations in Puerto del Carmen

13. Beaches in Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a smaller town resort North of the Capital City. It is a great location to explore the whole island. And it has a couple of enjoyable beaches with large carparks.

  • Playa Cucharas is the main beach – you have all amenities and restaurants around. Nice sand and easy swimming area. It is also appreciated by windsurfers
  • Los Charcos is another cove to the North. It has no facilities but that means it is less crowded…
  • Playa Jabillo is protected by volcanic rock, so it feels almost like a natural pool

See best rated accommodations in Costa Teguise

14. Beaches in Arrecife

I would not go to Arrecife just to go to the beach. But if you are staying there, the central beach is really great with shallow waters and fine sand.

15. The Best lanzarote beach for sunset – Famara

Beach + Sunset is really fantastic.

So let’s go back for a minute to Famara beach, our #2. I want to show you why it is worth visiting at sunset time, especially at low tide.
If you look towards the North, the cliffs are reflecting on the sand and turning pink and orange

And if you look towards the South, you can see the sun setting on the volcanoes….

Lanzarote Beaches – Map & video

Lanzarote is actually not the best of the Canary Islands for beaches since a lot of the coast is covered by volcanic soil and sand is not prominent on the island.
But it is a great place to combine beaches with nature, architecture and art. This is why I love Lanzarote.
Below is a map to help you understand the location of most of the main beaches in Lanzarote:

Nudist beaches in Lanzarote

Apart in the towns, most of the wilder beaches in Lanzarote are shared with naturists : Papagayo area, Famara,…
There is one 100% nudist resort in Charco del Palo in the North East coast: Finca del Mar.

Dangers

There are no animal dangers on the Lanzarote beaches. Jellyfishes are a rare occurence.
Your main danger is the sun, any time of the year. Lanzarote is often windy, so you don’t always realise how harsh the sun is. Protect yourself and don’t spend all day on the beach. And keep hydrated!

Beaches in Fuerteventura

You can have never ending discussions about going to Fuerteventura or Lanzarote.

My opinion is that for an overall great time with nature, architecture and beaches, Lanzarote is the best destinations.
But if you want a pure beach holiday, then Fuerteventura has the best beaches. Below are a few:

Jandia Lagoon (South)

In the South east coast is the impressive Jandia area with large expanse of fine sand and a beautiful lagoon.

El Cotillo (North West)

North West are the popular beaches of El Cotillo. Great sand and safe area to stay with the kids. Close of a small town with restaurants.

Corralejo Sand dunes (North East)

And you also have, of course, the famous Corralejo sand dune park in the North East. The road goes though the dunes. Sometimes you have to walk to reach the sea, but sometimes (as in the photo above), the beach is right by the road.

Want to see more of the CANARY ISLANDS?

Inspired? Share it on your favorite platform!

Lanzarote’s Lunar-Like Landscape

Off the northwestern coast of Africa, small clusters of land dot the Atlantic Ocean. The archipelagos include the Canary Islands, a Spanish-colonized island chain located just over 100 kilometers (60 miles) west of Morocco. Of the chain’s main islands and numerous islets, Lanzarote is one of the closest to the African mainland. It is also one of the driest and most barren, with rugged terrain that has compelled space agencies to train there.

The Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 acquired these images of the island on October 2, 2019. They show a landscape that is the result of an active volcanic history.

One notable eruption event started in 1730 and spanned six years, during which lava erupted from a 14-kilometer (8 mile) long fissure. Lava ultimately spread across 225 square kilometers, or one-third of the island. Another, shorter eruption in 1824 lasted 86 days, but still altered the landscape with new lava flows.

At times, the eruptions on the island have turned explosive when magma came into contact with cold groundwater. These explosive “phreatomagmatic” eruptions can produce small volcanic cones. One of these more prominent “tuff cones,” Caldera Blanca, measures 1140 meters (3740 feet) across and 450 meters (1500 feet) high. Its name is derived from its white color, a consequence of a colony of lichens that have taken up residence on its slopes.

Caldera Blanca and other volcanic structures are the centerpieces of Los Volcanes Natural Park. With a surface similar to that of the Moon and Mars, the park has been used to train astronauts and to test Mars rovers. It’s an outdoor classroom where astronauts and engineers can learn the techniques of field geology and geo-microbiology.

The island’s unique landscape has also been shaped by its desert-like climate with sparse rainfall. Because Lanzarote is flatter than the central and western islands in the archipelago, the cool, moist trade winds blowing pass right over it. In contrast, high mountain systems elsewhere in the Canary Islands trap moisture, producing rainfall on their northern coasts and a rain shadow on the leeward side.

Despite the dry climate and rocky landscape, some areas can support vegetation—mostly with human help. Since the eruption in the 1700s destroyed most of the fertile farmland, people have adapted by digging shallow basins and bordering them with half-circles of stacked lava rock. The figs, grapes, almonds, and other crops planted in the center of these basins receive some protection from the wind and harsh sunlight, and they stay hydrated with the help of mulch—in this case, a moisture-absorbing ash.

Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands formed from a chain of volcanoes in the Tyrrhenian Sea north of the island of Sicily. Geologists and volcanologists have studied the islands since the eighteenth century, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared them a World Heritage Site in 2000 because of their value to the study of volcanic processes.

Interactive Map Shows You Exactly What’s On The Other Side Of The World

Left: Pixabay, Right: Wikipedia

Think back to your childhood at the beach or playing in a sandbox and you likely wondered “What if I kept digging through the entire world, where would I end up?” I recall as a kid my dad telling me to point to where we are on a globe and to find the exact opposite location on the other side of the globe.

For some reason it’s akin to a long-lost pen pal, many of us have wondered what or whom lives on the other side of this massive earth. With a nifty tool called the Antipodes Map you can now know exactly where you’d end up on the other side of the world.

For instance, what if I took a shovel and dug through the entire earth starting in my backyard here in Houston, TX? I would find myself under a whole lot of water, smack dab in the center of the Indian Ocean directly west of Australia.

To calculate where you’d end up Antipodes finds the point furthest from the seed point which you can adjust interactively. You simply click a point on the left map and you see a guy’s head pop out on the exact opposite location on the other side of the world on the right-hand map.

By using the exact longitude and latitude of your seed point, the tool can accurately measure the farthest point on earth from that seed. This is a much more convenient way to determine what’s on the opposite side of the world than digging through the earth. If you were to dig, you would face the impossible task of digging through: continental crust, mantle, outer core, inner core, outer core, mantle, and crust once again. All that to likely end up in the middle of an ocean somewhere.

What if you did want to dig to the other side of the world? You’d probably want to take a look at the Kola Superdeep Borehole in Russia. This borehole was drilled as an attempt to drill as deep as possible in the earth’s crust. The well, which began drilling in 1970 finished in 1989 at 40,230 feet and is the deepest man-made hole on in the world. Unfortunately, they were hardly able to skim the surface of earth’s crust, let alone drill into the mantle. I’d suggest sticking with a more theoretical approach to digging through to the opposite side of the world.

The name Antipodes refers to two antipodal points that are situated on the exact opposite side of the world from one another.

Curious to calculate your antipode by hand? First, figure out the latitude and longitude of your current location. Then, take the latitude and convert it to the opposite hemisphere. For instance, if you’re located in New York City your latitude is 40.7128°N simply flip that to -40.7128°S. For longitude, you will have to subtract the longitude of your current location from 180°. In the case of New York City again, you would subtract 74.0059° W from 180°, leaving you with 105.9941°E.

Antipodes/Google Maps

If curious, below is a list of antipodal locations, both exact and approximate. This will give you a sense of what lies on the opposite side of the world from many cities that you’ve either visited or have heard of.

10 Recommended Things to do in Lanzarote

Want to explore this wild, arid landscape in the Canary Islands?

The best things to do on Lanzarote are exciting, fun and unique.  Take a trip outside more developed areas like Puerto del Carmen or Costa Teguise. You will find that Lanzarote transforms into an unspoiled, deserted paradise that’s waiting to be explored. Discover this beautiful volcanic Canary Island filled with whitewashed homes, wide beaches and friendly local places to order fresh fish while marvelling at the surroundings.

Here are some top tips of places to see during your adventures:

Timanfaya
National Park

  • What
is it? You won’t be fleeing from bubbling lava but then again none of these dormant volcanoes
have erupted since 1824. Between 1730 and 1736 it was a very different scenario. More than 100 of these wonderous volcanoes
erupted to create the basalt, lunar landscape that now covers
about a quarter of the island. This remarkable national park had been an inspiration to much of Cesar Manriques work which, in turn, has influenced the identity of ‘modern’ Lanzarote.
  • The spectacular moonscape is too vast and rugged for you to
explore on foot. Coach tours offer a fascinating overview of the
sea of lava with 25 craters. You can see guides dropping straw into
a hole at the Montanas del Fuego center for it to burst into flames. It is a land of fire and barely contained fury, where dishes are prepared using geothermal heat at El Diablo, as if cooked by the devil himself.

Jameos del
Agua Caves

  • What are they? Although the clue is in the title the are more than just holes in the ground. The aforementioned Cesar Manrique, Lanzarote’s most well-known artist,
gave rise to the island’s funkadelic look. This underground location is definitely it’s
crowning glory. Here you will find a cave system that opens to the blue Lanzarote sky,
while housing a restaurant, a very retro and very curvy swimming pool, as well as an auditorium. Indulge in a cooling drink while ferns
cascade from the walls as you sit on bar seats that are built into the rocks.
  • Imagine a dream party hosted by James Bond, Barbarella, and
Twiggy in sixties. This venue will blow your mind. After dark,
live music and gastronomic delights are on offer

Caleta de Famara for Beach, Surfing, Scenery and Food!

  • What’s This?
Famara is popular for its epic beaches, reef breaks and renowned surf schools. However, the 5km stretch of sand makes it a delight even for those
who aren’t so keen taking on some surfing. It is surrounded by a
cool, but still traditional small town with many bars, hostels and surf cafes.
  • Go for a swim or paddle, run along the beach, make a sandcastle or wonder at the colour changes that drift over the sharp rising cliffs as the sun begins to set. Take a table outdoors at Restaurante Sol to enjoy the dramatic scenery along with a delicious fresh fish meal. That alone can even revitalise your soul.

Haria

  • Where? The drive to the hilltop village of Haria is a scenic one and not too far from Jameos del Agua Caves. Although only slightly further inland, it’s peaceful atmosphere transports you to another world or perhaps another time yet again. This small enclave with it’s towering trees and tropical plants is reminiscent of times one by and is a real jewel to experience.
  • The laid back atmosphere of Haria is far more relaxing than the resorts of the south. Here you will also find another home that belonged to Cesar Manrique, which is open to the public. Check out the artist’s more personal artifacts and even unfinished works from his old studio, untouched since the day he passed. The weekly artisan market Haria is a more intimate affair than it’s more famous Teguise counterpart and is well worth a visit.

 Jardin de
Cactus

  • What
is it? It is a beautiful garden filled with cacti from all
sizes, shapes, and varieties, set up like an amphitheatre within an
old quarry. This ultra-Instagrammable attraction is once again
to be credited to Mr Manrique.

  • Why
not? This could be the most exotic and spikiest spot on Earth in
this era of succulent obsession. There are 4,500 species of 450
species living in this sun-trap in an arid environment. This
chic cafe/bar offers fresh juices as well as green-tinged Cactus
Burgers made with potato and prickly pear.

The Natural Piscinas (Swimming Pools) of Lanzarote

  • What
is it? You can find outdoor swimming pools on Lanzarote’s
eastern and southern coasts. These are most likely natural formations
made from rocks and have only steps and ladders. Some are built,
but have an opening to the ocean.
  • These seaside lidos offer a calmer swimming area than the
ocean, but are more wild than a chlorinated pool. You can do
laps at Los Charcones, near Playa Blanca and Punta Mujeres to the
    north

.

El Golfo

  • It
is what? Many paper tablecloth cafes offer ringside seating at
the coast where powerful Atlantic breakers batter the volcanic
coast.  Enjoy fresh fish and Canarian potatoes while you feel the
    sea spray on your face.

  • Why
not? It is energizing to see the dramatic action of waves
crashing onto black rocks just a few feet away and seabirds flying
above. You will scream when a huge wave hits. Los
Hervideros’ jagged rocks are a great spot for photos.

Teguise

  • What
will I see? Teguise was founded in 1402, and it is the oldest
settlement of the Canaries. It was Lanzarote’s capital for over 450
years due to its elevated location. You will find beautiful
white buildings, squares, and palm trees here. There is also a Sunday
market where you can buy local cheese and leather bags.
  • This charming spot is perfect for pottering among craft
shops and bars. Lagomar is another Manrique creation. This
home is made from lava and caves and decorated with bits of
shipwrecks. Then, visit the museum restaurant.

Arrieta

  • It
is a small village in the northeast of the island. It is a small
village located in the northeast corner of the island. This is
where you will find the unspoiled white beach Playa de La Garita, and
a harbor where fishing boats bob. You can enjoy a relaxed,
simple lunch at one of the many lovely restaurants.

  • Why
not? Marisqueria el Charcon is a great place to eat. The harbour
juts out to the sea, and people fish from the steps. Although it
looks like a boring, cheerful, cheap caff with plastic chairs and
fresh fish and chips, you will be happy.

Marina
Rubicon

  • What
is it? It is a busy marina with yachts and cafes along the coast
of Puerto del Carmen. This area is very popular with tourists and
well worth the trip for the duty-free shopping.
  •  Although it may seem a little tacky despite the high-end
stores, it is a great place to go if you are looking for a retail
experience but don’t want to travel to Arrecife.  For bargain
prices, you can find designer clothing at the stores located behind
the seafront, including Lacoste and Tommy Hilfiger.

Now, even though the title said 10 things to do on
Lanzarote we couldn’t just stop there!
So whether you are living in Lanzarote or enjoying a visit, here are some more highly recommended things to do and see also:

Cesar Manrique Foundation, Tahiche

  • What
is it? Manrique’s Las Palmas home/studio is a must-see. It was
built in an old lava flow with five underground caverns in natural
volcanic bubbles. These rooms are interconnected by tunnels.
  • It is such a clever mix of architecture, volcanic rock and art. The bubbly black
rocks walls offset the curvy swimming pools that are set in white
terraces, surrounded by palms and features incredible mid-century furniture.

Need a Spanish Mortgage to Secure your Dream Home in Lanzarote? Mortgage Direct S. L can help you get the most suitable Mortgage for your needs AND at the Best possible Spanish Interest Rate’s available

Playa de
Papagayo

  • It is a beach beauty. Actually,
seven. The pale yellow streaks are located on a hill in the
south and separated by lava rocks. They are protected from any
    undertows and currents.

  • Why
should you go? Playa del Charco de los Clicos is for its black
sand, redcliffs, and green lagoon. Playa Chica, on the other hand, is
known for its vibrant seabeds. This beach is the best for safe and
    easy swimming.

Museo
Atlantico

  • What
is it? The first European underwater sculpture museum is located
in the ocean near Marina Rubicon. It features sculptures and cement
figures by Jason deCaires Taylor. These sculptures are slowly being
    colonized by marine life.
  • This gives them an even more errie ghostlike presence as you drift through the though provoking pieces 12 metres below the surface.
  • Why Go? Well, it’s another world to discover in this already unique location called Lanzarote

Canaries on the world map: which island to choose and why with video!

Aviamania knows a lot about the Canary Islands, as it has not just traveled around, but studied! For example, to my favorite island Lanzarote , we have already flown twice. The topic of our today’s article is the Canary Islands on the world map: which island to choose!

Canary Islands on the world map

Canary Islands flight

We will tell you in detail how to move between the islands of the Canary archipelago for little money, how much it costs and how to buy air tickets with step-by-step instructions and, of course, we will present you with a photo. You will not need an interpreter or knowledge of Spanish, as we will try to describe the entire procedure in the most detailed and understandable way, that is, in Russian, from choosing a date and direction to making a purchase and checking your booking on the airline’s website.

Canary Islands which island to choose?!

Do not forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel Aviamania !

Before you go on a trip to the Canary Islands, you need to decide, no matter how trite it sounds, with the island. After all, in fact, in addition to the popular Tenerife, there are 7 large islands in the archipelago and there are still smaller ones, but no less beautiful.

Canary Islands on the world map where holidays are so different, but in any case unforgettable:

If you read about each island one by one and just can’t choose which one to go to, then don’t despair, because AIRLINE advises you to visit not one, but at least two islands to get twice as many impressions from rest.

Binter Canarias

This is the name of the airline reorganizing flights between the islands of the Canary archipelago. Since these are domestic airlines in Spain, covering a certain small area, Binter Canarias has not received wide distribution. But independent travelers who know that the Canary Islands are not only the island of Tenerife can make a fascinating and inexpensive route by organizing a vacation not on one island, but on several.

Binter Canarias fare types

Why are ticket prices different?

Tariffs for air tickets

Promo tariff:

By purchasing an air ticket at this tariff, you will not be able to change anything.

Cambio de Fecha y Hora – Change of date and time – Forbidden

Cambio de Ruta – Change of route – Forbidden

Prioridad en Lista de Espera – Priority on the waiting list – Forbidden there is no such service in one economy class tariff

Upgrade a tarifa superior – Upgrade a tarifa superior – Forbidden

Reembolsos – Refund of tickets purchased online – Forbidden – Changing the date and time – Can be changed for 12 euros, by the way, this is an important point

Upgrade a tarifa superior – Upgrade a tariff to premium – Can be upgraded for 12 euros, but is it necessary?

Disabled fare:

Please do not confuse it with the disabled fare, as Google translate can do a disservice and you will think that a healthy person does not have the right to buy tickets for this fare. This is not true! The restrictions in this case do not apply to the tourist, but to the ticket, namely:

Cambio de Fecha y Hora – Changing the date and time -Can be changed for 6 euros, that is, half the price of the previous option

Upgrade a tarifa superior – Upgrade a fare to premium – Can be upgraded for 6 euros

Reembolsos – Refund of tickets purchased via the Internet – Allowed for 12 euros!!! This is an almost unprecedented case, since cheap flights are almost always non-refundable. Another plus in favor of Binter Canarias.

Obtiene puntos BinterMás – Earning award miles for a flight – 100 miles (well, this is information in case you frequent the airports of the Canary Islands)

Tourist tariff:

Everything is possible without fines, except Prioridad en Lista de Espera – Priority on the waiting list, and without fines and surcharges.

Here you have the return of air tickets purchased via the Internet, or rather money for them and changes in the date and time, and even direction. You can completely change the route and reschedule it to another period, as the route allows it.

Well, of course, such different tariffs cannot be offered at the same price. As the saying goes, the less you pay, the more you risk.

The cost of a flight to the Canary Islands

First, I will tell you about the order of prices and the difference in price for residents and non-residents. Yes, yes, again, injustice, ticket prices are noticeably different for residents of Spain and foreigners …

If the buyer is not a resident:

First of all, on the welcome page of the site, on the left in the header, select the name of the island from which you want to fly and to which. There should be no difficulties, the names should be known to you if you started buying a ticket between the islands.

There are 2 more lines under the names and you are asked to tick one of them.

Sólo ida — one-way flight

Sólo vuelos directos — round trip

Select dates to the right. Even if you haven’t chosen the exact dates yet, put any date of the expected month, or rather the week of the trip, as the next step will be the opportunity to compare prices and see the low price calendar.

To the right of the date there are important fields:

Residente – Resident

No Residente — Non-resident

It is important to check the box honestly, because without documents confirming citizenship, even if you buy tickets, you will not be able to fly.

If only adult passengers make the flight, then opposite Adulto (adult) we put the number of people.

If there will be children on your trip, then click on viajo con ninos (I travel with children) and in the window that appears, depending on the age of the child indicated by numbers, select the number of children. (from 2 to 11 years or up to a year)

For example, in the photo below, I have chosen a flight for 1 non-resident adult from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria on January 4, 2015.

In order to display the whole month instead of a specific date, click on Visualiza todo el mes (displays the month), which is located at the top right above the table with times and fares.

Before us is a screen with prices by day for the whole of January 2015.

The prices differ because on some dates all 4 tariffs are available to choose from, on some 3.2 or even only the tourist tariff:

If the buyer is a resident

Prices for residents are much more humane. Well, judge for yourself, the same flight from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria on January 4, 2015, but for 20.5 euros instead of 41.

who can’t change anything at all.

How to buy tickets at a discount

There is one trick to buying tickets from this airline: the full tourist fare is available to everyone long before the date of travel, but the appearance on sale of tickets at Promo and Basic fares must be caught in the literal sense of the word for 2 – 3 months before the trip. In this interval, at any time, but not for all dates, tickets go on sale and sell out literally in days, a week and a half maximum, since the number of places for them is limited.

About pricing and tariffs, I think I’ve told enough, let’s move on to buying. As you understand, the topic of the Canary Islands article on the world map was revealed in the first part, so I will share useful information with you.

Buy tickets on the website of the airline

Air ticket to the Canary Islands is already in your hands since you are planning to buy a ticket for an internal flight between the islands)

I will tell you the process of buying from and to using the example of my ticket purchase.

January 5, 2015 3 adults and a child of 11 years old must travel from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria.

The screenshot below shows which fields you need to select for this:

By the way, to the right of choosing the number of children and adults, there are 4 options for ticking. If you are entitled to any benefits provided by the airline.

Todos menores de 29 – all passengers under 29

A similar fare is offered for passengers over 60 years of age.

Todos mayores de 60 – all passengers over 60 years old.

There are also discounts of 5 and 10% for large families (kinship must be documented at the time of registration):

Familia numerosa – large family be denied)

We continue to purchase tickets and proceed to the next step.

Choice of flight time

Since departure from the hotel is usually before 12 o’clock, and check-in to a new one, but already on another island, after 15 o’clock. In this case, the optimal time for the flight will be 14 hours 30 minutes. This is due to the fact that the duration of the flight is only an hour, you need to arrive at the airport in advance (2-2.5 hours). And you need to have time to have breakfast and get to the airport.

For the date we need, tickets are offered only at two rates: a limited travel fare and a full travel fare. I was quite satisfied with this state of affairs, since there is no 100% certainty that the flight will take place. And for 12 euros you can return the money for tickets.

So, making sure that the time and date are correct, and the correct number of adults and children, and not residents, is indicated in the box to the right, click on the Continuar button:

By the way, please note that if I had booked a hotel in Lanzarote not before January 5, but before January 4, and the date of arrival at the hotel in Gran Canaria could also be moved a day earlier, then the flight would have cost 67 euros cheaper. Since from January 2 to January 4 and from January 9, in addition to the two proposed tariffs, there are also cheaper ones.

But it doesn’t matter anymore, because I need tickets for January 5th.

Go to the next step and fill in the passenger data

Please note that the price for three adults and a child is EUR 231. However, the screenshot below shows that it has increased by 34. 36 euros.

Tasas – 10.36 euros for 4 people and
Cargos de Emisión (emissions fee) – 24 euros for 4 people

Our flight costs 265.36 euros in total.

Datos pasajero 1 | Adulto No residente – Data on the first passenger / Adult Non-resident

Título – address – Sr (male, i.e. sir) and Sra (woman, i.e. madam or mademoiselle)

Nombre – First name

1er Apellido – first surname / current surname (not maiden name)

2do Apellido – second surname / surname in the past

Documento – document – select from the list Pasaporte (passport)

– passport number Nú mero

Tarjeta de fidelización – loyalty card, if you are

Next, uncheck the box Indicar los datos de contacto de un familiar o allegado del pasajero según UE 996/2010 if you do not have a resident relative or close friend.

We have sorted out the form for an adult passenger, so let’s move on to the child.

Everything is the same until you reach the date of birth column (it must be selected)

Further, if the child has his own passport, then put down the data and do not put a checkmark next to Documento padre, madre o tutor (parent document or guardian) . If you don’t have your passport, then we put and fill in the data from the parent’s document.

Proceed to payment

There are 2 options to choose from:

By filling in the bank card details or via PayPal.

If there are any difficulties with paying by card and you are registered with PayPal, then it is easier to pay this way.

If the payment does not go through, it is better for you to contact the bank.

If the payment is made, then move on

On the airline’s page, a window appears with the completed booking, which contains all the necessary information, including ticket numbers. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to the e-mail you specified (on the previous step before payment).

It is better to print this confirmation and take it with you on your trip, as the airline staff will better deal with the document without your intervention and knowledge of the language is not required.

The ticket contains all the necessary information on your fare:

If you have lost your letter or forgotten your email password, you can get the data on the Binter Canarias website at any time by writing down the booking code in advance.

In the Mis reservas section, you enter the reservation code and your last name and receive comprehensive information.

So we figured out the purchase, and now for those who still have the strength to read

Which island is better to go to and how much does the flight cost

Airfare between the Canary Islands:

How to get from Gran Canaria to Tenerife

Tenerife has 2 airports: North and South. In more detail, those who wish can learn about the names, distinguishing and location in the article devoted to this issue.

Below is the cost of a flight to the island of Tenerife at the airport located in the North of the island, it is he who concentrates most of the domestic passenger traffic.

As you can see, prices range from 32 to 63 euros depending on the tariff.

If we consider the south airport of Tenerife, then the choice is very small, only one morning flight and almost 2 times more expensive. Much when choosing will depend on where you are heading upon arrival, since the size of the island of Tenerife is not very small. And the cost of a taxi ride from north to south will hit the pockets of many. Well, if a rented car is already waiting for you at the airport, then it is not so important which airport to land at, since you will only win in terms of money.

How to get from Gran Canaria to Fuertoventura:

Tickets are plentiful and reasonably priced, if you want to visit the island of Fuertoventura, adored by surfers, where year-round winds contribute to an active pastime, then go for it:

You will want to fly to the endless beach of the neighboring island, then it is quite possible to buy a ticket from Teneriye to the island of Fuertoventura:

In general, as you probably already guessed, there are a great many combinations. Go to the site and choose. It is possible for a vacation, if its duration allows, to fly around 3-4 islands, and then return back.

Canary Islands You can explore for years and each time you find new interesting things to do and be inspired by the breathtaking views of the mountains and the power of the ocean.

If the article seemed interesting to you or perhaps helped you organize a dream trip, write about it in the comments and this will be the best gratitude to the author for the work done.

We wish you unforgettable adventures in the Canaries!!!

125 km from the coast of Morocco and 2000 km from mainland Spain, Lanzarote is the fourth largest island in the Canary archipelago. This island of volcanic origin is also called the “island of fire-breathing mountains” – three hundred volcanoes are located on its territory.

Local unusual picturesque landscapes that appear before the eyes of travelers are fascinating – here are truly “lunar landscapes”. Most of the island is covered with solidified lava with multi-colored volcanic cones of various sizes rising between the lava fields.

My Lanzarote report

What time to go to Lanzarote?

The climate of the island is subtropical, mild, without large temperature fluctuations. The average annual temperature ranges from +20 °C in winter to +26 °C in summer. You can swim in the ocean water here all year round – its temperature is 20-23 °C.

Beaches of the island

Caleton Blanco sandbar (photo: Joseba Palacios Sáez)

Of the 250 km of coastline, 30 km of white, black and red sand beaches cover. All of them are municipal and free. The best beaches with crystal clear water and white sand are in Papagayo Bay on the south coast of the island. Windsurfers will love the Playa de Famara beach with its constantly blowing winds.

Sandbar Caleton Blanco
on the north coast is great for families with children. Nudists can sunbathe near Playa Blanca at Playas de Papagayo
.

Cities and resorts of Lanzarote

Arrecife

Capital of the island Arrecife

Arrecife is the capital of the island. The city is located in the eastern part of Lanzarote. It is a commercial and passenger port where commercial ships and cruise liners moor. The city grew up on the site of a settlement founded in the 14th century by the Genevan merchant Malosello. Arrecife has long been a haven from storms for travelers and pirates.

Here are the main historical sites of Lanzarote – the old fortresses of San José and San Gabriel. The coast of Arrecife has several excellent EU Blue Flag beaches. In the restaurants of the city, you can taste dishes from fresh fish caught by local fishermen, and taste wine from a vine grown on volcanic lava.

Costa Teguise

The resort town of Costa Teguise (photo: zbiada)

Costa Teguise is a cozy resort town 10 kilometers from Arrecife. This resort was built specifically for tourists in the seventies of the XX century. Cesar Manrique participated in the architectural project of Costa Teguise. His main creation is the center of the town – the stylized fishing village of Pueblo Marinero with restaurants, bars and a traditional weekly fair. In Costa Teguise is one of the residences of the Spanish king. From entertainment there are golf courses, tennis courts, water sports training centers, a water park.

At the end of February, a wonderful carnival takes place here with processions in medieval costumes.

Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen – the tourist capital of the island (photo: belperskelter)

The tourist capital of Lanzarote is the city of Puerto del Carmen (Puerto del Carmen). It stretches for seven kilometers along the southeast coast of the island. Lined with restaurants, nightclubs, hotels and shops, its main street, Avenida de las Playas, is bustling day and night. Around the harbor is the old city center with a labyrinth of streets. This area retains the atmosphere of the small fishing village of La Tiños, from which the current resort began. In the vicinity of Puerto del Carmen, you can visit the Rancho Texas Zoological Garden.

At the end of July, the Fiesta de Carmen is held here – a bright holiday dedicated to the patron saint of the city.

Puerto Calero

Puerto Calero resort (photo: Robert)

Puerto Calero is a quiet and peaceful resort town. There are no crowded beaches, there are no evening entertainments usual for European resorts. This is an exclusive village built for respectable vacationers. Port of Puerto Calero serves as a marina for private yachts, a starting point for sea excursions and recreational dives in a yellow submarine. The city has a Whale and Dolphin Museum (Museo de Cetáceos de Canarias).

Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is located on the south coast of Lanzarote. This is the newest and actively developing resort of the island. Playa Blanca is ideal for family holidays: its beaches are suitable for both small children and active water sports enthusiasts. The developed infrastructure of the resort will appeal to vacationers of any age. From the local port you can make an excursion to the island.

Las Coloradas

Las Coloradas resort village (photo: darekw)

Las Coloradas is a village located near Playa Blanca. A 400-meter strip of beach, covered with volcanic sand, stretches along the coast. A monument of military architecture rises above the beach – the 18th-century fortress Castillo de las Coloradas. Along the coast of Las Coloradas there is a beautiful romantic promenade with hospitable bars and restaurants. Within walking distance from Las Coloradas are the most beautiful wild beaches of Lanzarote – Playas de Papagayo.

La Santa Sport

La Santa Sport Resort (photo: Smithal)

In the northwest of Lanzarote, by the picturesque La Santa lagoon, there is a sports resort called La Santa Sport. This place is a real paradise for active people. Regardless of age and abilities, everyone here will find something to their liking. The resort has all the necessary conditions for practicing numerous water sports, martial arts, sports games (badminton, tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball, handball, football). In addition, there are areas for lovers of athletics, fitness, aerobics, Pilates, and yoga. Numerous hiking and cycling routes are offered. And of course, in La Santa Sport there are all the necessary entertainments of the resort area: shops, restaurants, pine forests, swimming pools, discos, beaches, spa centers.

Map of Lanzarote resorts and attractions

Lanzarote attractions

In the western part of the island is the main attraction – Timanfaya National Park (Parque nacional de Timanfaya). Its unusual landscapes delight every visitor. An obligatory point in the program is a visit to the unique El Diablo restaurant, which is located at the top of an active volcano, where mouth-watering dishes are cooked on a volcanic grill.

Lake Charco de los Clicos

South of the village of El Golfo is an amazing lake of unnatural acid green color – Charco de los Clicos (Charco de los Clicos). Like frozen waves, it is surrounded by bizarre rocks. On the black pebble beach there are tourists who are keen on searching for the olive-green semi-precious stone – olivine (chrysolite).

The volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua

The volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua are an extraordinary landscape that consists of underground passages and grottoes. This complex has become an excursion object thanks to the initiative of the artist Cesar Manrique. The first cave with a luxurious tropical garden and an artificial reservoir is called Jameo Grande. A little further is Jameos del Agua, a concert cave with unique acoustics and the entrance to a crater called Jameo de la Cazuela. The fauna of Jameos del Agua is interesting, the most famous representative of which is the white blind crab, which has become a symbol of this cave complex.

Cueva de Los Verdes

Los Verdes cave, more than 6 km long, appeared several thousand years ago. At one time, local residents fled from pirates in its intricate galleries. Now a kilometer section of the tunnel with winding corridors and spacious high halls is open for tourists.

César Manrique House Museum

Amazing house of the famous artist, built and decorated by himself, is now the office of the César Manrique Foundation (Fundación César Manrique) and a museum of the eminent master, which houses the works of the artist himself, as well as his personal collection of paintings Tapiesa, Miro, Picasso.

You can appreciate the beauty of the Chinijo archipelago from the observation deck of Cape Mirador del Rio (Mirador del Rio) – 470 m above sea level.

The vineyards of La Geria (photo: Ciska)

La Geria is a well-known wine-growing region with vineyards that even climb the slopes of volcanoes. Now it is a protected zone, positioned, at the initiative of Cesar Manrique, as an example of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature. From the Malvasia grown in these places, they make amazingly tasty and aromatic wine, which you can try and buy in local wineries.

Cactus Park (photo: tartandart)

Cactus Park (Jardin de Cactus) is an extraordinary amphitheater park in a former volcanic ash quarry. It is located in the village of Guatiza. Many unique representatives of the cactus family of various shapes and colors grow here.

Rancho Texas Park (photo: Ute & Hans)

Rancho Texas Park is a wild west-themed zoological garden featuring a variety of animal species kept in enclosures. Of particular interest to visitors is the show of raptors with huge birds spectacularly diving into the pond.

Aqua Park Costa Teguise

Aqua Park Costa Teguise (photo: pipol)

The Aqua Park Costa Teguise in the resort town of Costa Teguise is the favorite of the kids. Bright trampolines, inflatable “Castle of games”, “Lake for children”, which brought together slides of various shapes and colors, captivate children for the whole day. There are also water activities for adults, for example, the Eight Tracks attraction. There are also souvenir shops, cafes and a cozy restaurant on the territory of the water park.

The unique atmosphere of Lanzarote is fundamentally different from the tropical paradise reigning on other islands of the Canary archipelago. Its volcanic landscapes evoke strong associations of being on another planet or in a fantasy world inhabited by unknown inhabitants. And most of the attractions of Lanzarote
only reinforce the initial impressions.
The most famous place on the island is Timanfaya – a national park that amazes tourists with lunar-Martian landscapes and an incredible number of volcanoes located in a small area. Few people will be left indifferent by a lunch in a restaurant above the mouth of a volcano and a fire show arranged for visitors. The legacy of ancient eruptions are the inimitable galleries of the underground caves of Los Verdes and Jameos, whose bizarre forms frighten and fascinate. The skill of the legendary architect Cesar Manrique turned one of them into a unique natural and architectural complex with an artificial lagoon and an underground concert hall. No less interesting are other creations of the master: the Mirador del Rio observation deck, a luxurious cactus garden and the former architect’s house, harmoniously integrated into the volcanic landscape.

There are no direct flights to this amazing island from our country, but if you get to Madrid or Barcelona and take the time to fly to the capital of the island of Lanzarote – Arrecife, your efforts will be fully rewarded. Possible inconvenience during the transfer and the time spent in the airliner’s seat – everything will be erased as soon as you find yourself in this fabulous place.

“Moon” landscapes will captivate you from the first moments.

The fact is that Lanzarote is a reserve of volcanoes.
The combination of beaches, modern civilization and a range of volcanic cones cannot leave indifferent even the most sophisticated travelers.

So, after landing, getting to your destination will not be difficult – bus service between the resort places of Lanzarote is well established.
It is also convenient to get around the island by renting a car.

Cuisine and restaurants

Island cuisine is a combination of Spanish spice and Mexican spiciness, seafood and British breakfast rolls. For every taste you can find a menu in Lanzarote. If you want to taste traditional Canarian dishes, the best choice is to visit the restaurant “Volcan de la Corona”.

Grilled fresh meat and fragrant vegetables, all kinds of stews – all with a view of the Corona volcano.

Cozy, homely, with a patio – you will return to this establishment more than once.

For lovers of Mediterranean cuisine who want to taste luxuriously prepared seafood, dinner at Isla de Lobos will be a real gastronomic shock. But don’t forget to book a table at this exclusive venue and make sure you dress appropriately.

If you’re staying in Puerto del Carmen or on a tour, stop by for a pizza bite at Caffe Italia Pizzeria – you won’t regret it.

Attractions Lanzarote

The island itself is an attraction. As a result of numerous lava eruptions, it is completely devoid of flora, but three hundred volcanic peaks and colored fields of solidified lava make such a strong impression that you can be sure that you will not forget this place in a lifetime.

You can enjoy these views to the fullest in the Timanfaya National Reserve, which is located in the western part of the island.

The cave Cueva de los Verdes is a must to visit.
Formed as a result of an eruption and having a depth of 6 km, it is a unique monument of nature. And in one of its halls there is a concert hall – natural acoustics strikes the imagination of visitors.

The cactus garden will be interesting for both children and adults. You will not see such bizarre plants anywhere in the world.

Entertainment

As on any island, all kinds of water sports are popular on Lanzarote. Windsurfing, snorkelling, scuba diving, as well as other types of active pastime: hang gliding, karting, golf, horseback riding – all these and other types of recreation are developed in Lanzarote.

And if you are lucky enough to visit Lanzarote at the end of June, on International Surfing Day (24.06) an unforgettable performance awaits you.

In addition, the island has four large entertainment centers where you can spend time with the whole family.

The Canary Island of Lanzarote is a unique place, and if you happen to be there, the desire to return there will not leave you until you realize it.

Lanzarote – an island in the Canary Islands, the province of Las Palmas

A place that combines fascinating volcanic landscapes, innumerable opportunities for outdoor activities, amazing Mediterranean cuisine – this is one of the islands of the Canary archipelago – Lanzarote.

The Canary Islands have long been rightfully considered a place of elite recreation. The islands are washed by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and consist of 7 large and several small islands.

Island of Volcanoes

The fourth largest island of the Canary archipelago Lanzarote is called the “island of volcanoes”
. It is complex, like a bizarre mosaic, of unique multi-tiered caves, beaches, plantations of vineyards, cacti and, of course, the sun. Scientists suggest that the age of the island is approximately 15 million years. This is the easternmost island of the Canarian archipelago, located about 125 km from the coast of Africa and 1000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.

The island was named after the Genoese merchant Lancelotto Malocello, who arrived on the island in the 14th century. The coastline of the island stretches for 213 km, of which 10 km are covered with sand, and the rest is a rocky coast. The beach is located at 16.5 km. Extravagant mountain ranges were formed after numerous eruptions and lava flows that spread along the slopes, giving them bizarre shapes.

The demon is the emblem of the island
. This is explained by the fact that the first inhabitants of the island perceived the volcanic eruptions as the work of the devil. The largest recorded eruptions occurred between 1730 and 1736.

During 2.053 days of eruptions, lava covered ¼ of the surface of the entire island, including the most fertile soil, and buried 11 villages under it. The island was actually deprived of forest cover and only succulents and lichens managed to take root in Lanzarote. The drought that affected the island in 1768 and the lack of rain during the winter led to the emigration of the population to America and Cuba.

The next volcanic eruption occurred in 1824, but in terms of its strength it was less destructive than the main one. But it also led to the exodus of the indigenous population. Today, the island has about 140,000 inhabitants, 73.9% of which are Spaniards.

The capital of the island Arrecife owes its name to the mountain reef
, which is why Aressife is translated from Spanish as “reef”. The streets of the city reflect the unique maritime character and literally breathe history.

The first mention of Arrecife dates back to the 15th century, when the city was still a small fishing village. Black volcanic reefs, behind which boats hid, protected fishermen from sudden pirate attacks. In the XVI century. the settlement began to grow actively, and the first church dedicated to the first bishop of San Gines was erected on its territory.

The city became the capital in 1852 and such major industries as tourism and agriculture are actively developing on its territory.

Arrecife is home to the city beach of Reducto, a castle of San José built in the 17th century. and which today houses a collection of modern art, as well as the castle of San Gabriel.

The tallest building on the island – Gran Hotel Arrecife
is located in the city next to the harbour. The city has several malls and the main street of the shopping district.

Of course, not the capital of the island is attractive for tourists, but resort centers
    :

    • Costa Teguise;
    • Puerto del Carmen, in the suburbs of which the resort village of Puerto Calero is located;
    • New tourist center in the south – Playa Blanca.

    PUERTO DEL CARMEN

The tourist center is located on the southeast coast of the island and stretches along the ocean for 7 km.

You can get to Puerto del Carmen from the airport by bus
. Arrecife Bus provides regular transport links.
The ticket price is negligible – approximately 1.50€.

You can also use the services of the competing company Bono Bus, with which the journey to the oldest resort will cost 1.20€.

    Buying Bono Bus magnetic cards
    , save 20% on travel.

Taxi service for visitors. The fare depends on the time of day
. So from 6:00 to 22:00 you can get to Puerto del Carmen for approximately 15 €, from 22:00 to 6:00 – for 18 €.

What used to be a small resort village has turned into a resort town in just 20 years, receiving over 30,000 tourists annually. A significant part of the city is occupied by natural spacious sandy beaches.

    Puerto del Carmen beaches

    Playa Grande or Playa Blanca

    Ideal for families with children
, as it is covered with golden sand, there are no winds here, the waters of the ocean are calm and the shore canopy. Its length is 900m, maximum width – 100m. On the beach there is a rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, a shower and a wide range of water activities.

    Playa de los Pocillos

The golden sand beach is just above sea level, so the tides leave small “lakes”. Previously, sea salt was mined here by the old method of evaporation in the sun.

This is the longest and widest beach in the resort. Its length is 1.600m, the maximum width is 170m (at low tide it can reach 200m). Because of the winds, it is not so attractive for families with children. On its territory there is a rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, a shower, but there are no water activities here.

    Playa Matagorda

The golden sandy beach starts gently from Playa de los Pocillos and ends at the Beatriz Playa hotel. It is also windy, its length is 1.000m, the maximum width is 60m. Umbrellas with sun loungers and showers are provided for vacationers. There are no water activities.

    Playa Fariones and Playa Chica

They are not intended for beach lovers, as the entrance to the water is blocked by stones. But is a favorite spot for divers.
. There is a dive center that teaches mainly beginner divers. The beach is 140m long and 25m wide. On the beach, covered with light sand and stones, there are no sun loungers with umbrellas and water activities, but the shower works properly.

Attractions, entertainment and shopping in Puerto del Carmen

The resort area has many restaurants, including fish restaurants, offering exquisite Canarian cuisine, bars that entertain visitors every evening with simple show programs, discos and casinos. The port offers an exciting boat trip or fishing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Around the harbor is the “Old Town”, which has retained the atmosphere of a fishing village.

In the evening, tourists stroll along Avenida de las Playas, the resort’s main thoroughfare. There are many small shops offering mainly beach assortment and souvenirs.

But the resort town also has more significant stores, as well as branded boutiques Diesel, Lacoste, etc. The largest new shopping center on the entire island, Biosfera Plaza, is located in Puerto del Carmen.

In the evening you can visit the Music Hall Tavern – an eccentric cabaret with a vulgar but funny program
. The bulk of visitors are tourists from foggy Albion.

In the second half of May, international triathlon competitions are held annually in Puerto del Carmen. Marching athletes arriving on the island to compete in cross-country, cycling and swimming are solemnly greeted by numerous spectators on Avenida de las Playas. An important sporting event is covered in all local media.

At the end of July, the Fiesta de Carmen is celebrated on a large scale – a holiday honoring the heavenly patroness of the city. The city is festively decorated with garlands, colorful banners, flags and balloons.

The fun lasts until the morning, introducing numerous tourists to traditional folklore performances, dances and other entertainment. For this holiday, fishing boats are festively decorated so that at the climax they go to the ocean in a long line. Residents of the city at the end of the holiday pray for good catches next year.

    Hotels Puerto del Carmen

There are few hotels on the vast territory of the resort. Mostly apartments are offered, of which there are over 200.

Among the 4-star hotels worthy of attention:

    • Seaside Los Jameos Playa;
    • Las Costas;
    • ClubHotel Riu Paraiso Lanzarote.

Among the 3 stars you can stay at:

    • Apartamentos Barcarola Club;
    • Costa Sal Apartments;
    • La Penita Apartments and others

2-star hotels are also ready to offer neat rooms and good service:

    • HG Guacimeta;
    • Jable Bermudas Apartments;
    • Plaza Azul and many more.

    COSTA TEGUISE

The second most important tourist center
is located in the east of the island.

From Lanzarote Airport you can reach the resort in just 15 minutes by bus (ticket price 1. 15€, travel by Bono Bus will cost 0.92€) or taxi (from 6.00 to 22.00 – 20€, from 22.00 until 6.00 – 24€).

The resort has no history of turning a fishing village into a beautiful city. It was created artificially on an uninhabited stretch of coast about 40 years ago. The coast is always windy, so Costa Teguise has become a favorite destination for windsurfers and kiters.

    Beaches of Costa Teguise

There are 5 beaches in Costa Teguise:

    Las Cucharas

Translated from Spanish, the name translates as “spoons”. The length of the beach, covered with fine light sand, is 700m, the width is 60m. On the beach, guests can rent umbrellas and sun loungers, showers.

There are no water activities, so for the impressions of walking on the ocean and catching exotic fish, you will have to go to the nearby Puerto del Carmen or its suburb – Puerto Calero. The beach was chosen by windsurfers, as a moderate wind does not stop blowing even for a minute.

But near the Melia Salinas, the wind is calmer, so the waves are calmer, and beach lovers are already basking in the sun on a wider beach.

    Playa de los Charcos

Windy beach with fine light sand. Entry into the waters of the ocean is hampered by stones. But the beach, with a length of 310m and a width of 30m, is protected from the waves. There are water activities, umbrellas with sun loungers and showers.

    El Jabillo

The rocky beach is 180m long and 20m wide. The waves are low here. Near the beach is the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel. There is no entertainment and soul, only the rental of sun loungers and umbrellas works.

    Playa Bastian

It differs from the rest in darker sand. There are few vacationers here, since entry into the ocean is difficult due to the rocky descent. The length of the western beach is 300m, its maximum width is 35m.

    Playa Ancla

A small nice and cozy beach with a length of 120m and a width of 30m, visited mainly by guests of nearby hotels. There are no water activities, a shower, and even rental of umbrellas with sun loungers. Nearby is the residence of the King of Spain.

    Attractions and entertainment Costa Teguise

The center of Costa Teguise is concentrated around Pueblo Marinero, a decorative fishing village designed by Cesar Manrique. Also, according to the project of Manrique, ordered by King Hussein of Jordan, one of the four residences of the King of Spain, La Mareta, was built. She was presented by Hussein to the Spanish king Juan Carlos as a wedding gift.

La Mareta is a rather modest building with a helipad located on its territory. The residence is carefully guarded, and curious tourists are not allowed to enter here.

Costa Teguise has numerous bars and restaurants
, and once a week on Fridays there is a market where they sell clothes, cheap jewelry and souvenirs. Those who wish can go with specially organized flights from Costa Teguise to a huge market in the city of Teguise, which takes place on Sundays.

The market offers original handmade souvenirs
craftsmen. After shopping in the administrative capital of the coast, you can stroll around the city – the old capital of the island with a long history.

The settlement was named Teguise after the daughter of the last native king who lived in the 15th century. One of the streets of the city is called “Bloody” in memory of the events when most of the inhabitants were brutally killed in one of the numerous raids of pirates.

Also, the fortress on Mount Castillo de Santa Barbara is named after its owner, who was canonized for the fact that she was martyred without giving the pirates the place of refuge of her servants. She is the patroness of the city, and Spanish Catholics always commemorate her day in churches.

Among the objects of interest is Spinoza’s palace, which was originally the residence of the governor-general, and then passed to later owners – merchants from Genoa.

Now the palace is a museum and its richly decorated interior impresses visitors. It is also worth visiting one of the oldest churches in the Canary Islands, the Nuestra Señora de Guadelupe church, and then strolling along the stone-paved streets with numerous sights.

    – plan your vacation time correctly to get the most out of your vacation.

    Pro Canarian cuisine
with an abundance of the freshest seafood and vegetables.

Tenerife’s most popular resort – Playa de las Americas
. We talk about the history of the resort, hotels, beaches, shopping and entertainment.

But even in the resort of Costa Teguise there is still a lot of entertainment. This and is a great course for golf fans
, which became the first on the entire island of Lanzarote.

This and aquarium, which attracts visitors with a glass tunnel with sharks
and 33 separate aquariums, the last of which is an almost instructive visual of how human waste is polluting the ocean. Filled with a variety of garbage, it makes people think about a more careful attitude to nature.

In the largest aquarium with a capacity of 400,000 liters, you can dive on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 14:00, swim with a 2-meter shark cat
and with other inhabitants of the ocean.

Experienced instructors provide detailed instructions, and the dive itself takes 20 minutes. Pleasure is not cheap – approximately 130 €.

Those who did not find enough water activities in Costa Teguise can go to Aquapark Costa Teguise
    .

It provides entertainment for visitors of all ages, but especially the organizers focused on entertainment for children.

So, in Zona Infantil – “Children’s Zone” you can frolic on a huge inflatable “Castle of Games” (Castillo de Juegos) and have fun sliding down colorful slides of various colors and shapes in El lago infantil – “Lake for Children”.

The “Children’s Park” (Ocio Infantil) is decorated with all sorts of funny caricatures and equipped with innumerable trampolines.

Adults can compete in car races on the 8 sendas (“8 tracks”) attraction, appreciate the steep turns of the Turbolancha diapositiva tubular high-speed tube, and extreme sportsmen can feel the adrenaline rush into the blood after descending the Kamikaze slide.

The water park is open all year round from 10:00 to 18:00, but it is not recommended for children to visit in winter, as the pools are not equipped with water heating systems. Entrance for kids under 2 years old is free, for children under 12 years old a ticket will cost 16 €, for adults – 22.5 €.

    Hotels Costa Teguise

On the coast of Costa Teguise there is a worthy choice of hotels of all categories.

Gran Melia Salinas&The Garden Villas should be mentioned among 5 stars
, an icon of the cultural heritage of Lanzarote, designed by the architect Fernando Higueras and the famous artist Cesar Manrique, where the minimum cost per night per room will start from 129€. The territory of the exclusive luxury hotel is equipped with sports fields, high fashion boutiques, SPA and much more.

was once a quiet fishing village.

You can reach the resort, stretching along the ocean for several kilometers, in 35 minutes by bus (ticket price 3.15€, with Bono Bus – 2.52€) or taxi (estimated cost from 6:00 to 22:00 – 30 €, from 22:00 to 6:00 – 36 €).

You can also rent a car directly at the airport. But we advise you in advance, so there will be fewer unpleasant surprises upon arrival.

It may not be the correct model, or it will only be on a manual box when you are used to an automatic. In addition, there are almost always good discounts for online booking
    .

There are numerous restaurants and bars in the resort area. There are 2 ports, from one of which you can cross with a car on the Fred Olsen Express high-speed ferry to the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It will take only 12 minutes, and now you can enjoy the sights and beauties of another Canary island.

Marina Rubicon is the second port of the Playa Blanca resort, which even has its own emblem. The most expensive and luxurious snow-white yachts moor here.

    Playa Blanca Beaches

Next to the new elegant and promising resort are Playas de Papagayo – the most beautiful wild beaches of the island
. Picturesque landscapes around bays with emerald water, light fine-grained sand attract local residents from all over the island.

Playas de Papagayo is a chain of beaches with such names as Playa del Congrio, Playa del Pozo (closest to Playa Blanca), Playa de Papagayo, Playa de la Cera, etc.

Since they are all located on the territory of the national park, if you travel by car, you must pay 3€.

Playa Blanca is translated from Spanish as “white beach”
, which is confirmed by the pleasant, like silk, white sand. There are 3 main beaches within the city limits.

    Playa Blanca

Small natural beach with a length of only 100m and a maximum width of 20m, located in the very center of the resort, just a step away from the lively promenade. On its territory there are no sun loungers with umbrellas and water activities, but the shower works properly.

    Playa Dorada

The spacious beach, which is 330m long and 35m wide, is located in the eastern part of the resort and is perfectly protected from high waves by breakwaters. Everything is provided for a wonderful beach holiday: sun loungers, umbrellas, showers and numerous water activities.

    Playa Flamingo

Located in the western part of the resort center. Length – 225m, width – 40m. Low waves are caused by breakwaters, and the beach has everything you need for a good rest.

In addition to these beaches, there is also Playa Las Coloradas and 3 undeveloped beaches, where sand alternates with stones.

    Hotels in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca offers the widest choice of hotels.

Among the 4 stars you can choose:

    • One of the largest hotels in the city – h20 Rubicón Palace;

. At the entrance to the park, those who wish can ride on camels. On the territory of the park you can see the magnificent creations of nature – many volcanic grottoes
    and various tectonic structures.

If fate gave you the opportunity to come to rest in Lanzarote, then you should definitely visit the north of the island, where a special microclimate has developed that has turned the zone into the greenest place on the island – the Valley of a Thousand Palm Groves
    .

Worked again in Jameo del Agua Grand Master Cesar Manrique
, building steps into the cave and places for visitors from the remnants of lava. The rest of the interior is adorned with cacti and green ferns, creating a fantastic setting for this place.

Tourists also visit La Geria, where they are given the opportunity to taste sweet wines produced by from grapes that grow in fields with solidified lava
    .
