Mind blowing experience

Couples

I can’t even put this experience into words! The way the staff care and love the animals is so genuine! The shows that are on throughout the day such as the orcas, dolphins and seals are just incredible, our cheeks hurt from smiling ear to ear! Our day at loro parque has been the main topic of conversation since we have returned and it’s a day that will not be forgotten about ever! The penguins were my favourite and the addition of the penguin shop was perfect to take home a little souvenir! I loved that the money we pay to enter contributes to on going research.

Contrast to Siam, nicely managed place with pleasant experience

Family

Nice zoo, rare animals, good shows. No big crowd, a huge relief after visiting Siam Park managed by the same company. Siam Park is de facto dead, it is not visitable with so many tickets sold. Happy to see Loro Parque thrives and customers able to enjoy the visit without queuing anywhere for more than an hour.

A brilliant day out for all the family

We’ve visited many zoos and this was by far the most enjoyable.

There are plenty of reviews on here of Loro Parque that I can’t agree with. Some say it was over-crowed; it was busy the day we visited but certainly, we never felt it was crowded and there were no challenges in seeing the animals. We did queue for the penguinarium but once inside I realised why as you board a moving “walk-way” and this ensures everyone gets the best view.

There were 8 in our group and we managed to get seated at a table in one of the many food outlets without any issues. The prices were reasonable for a visitor attraction like this in my opinion and the food was excellent. We stopped for drinks at a few different outlets too and never had any issues.

Some people question the value for money and one even said that the park could be done in 3-4 hours. I suppose you could rush around if you like but if you’re visiting a zoo surely you want to spend time observing the animals and reading about them? We entered at the 9:30 am opening and were one of the last groups to leave at the 5:30 pm closing time.

There are four different animal shows; parrots, sea lions, dolphins and orcas. We went to them all. Each one does 4 shows each day that last about 15 minutes each. They mix educational videos on a big screen with displays of the animals. We found them all to be excellent.

It would be remiss to not address the issue of animal performances given there are some reviews from people who either went along with the strong views already locked-in or simply haven’t actually visited Loro Parque. I am aware of criticism of these shows (not only here) and especially with regards to the orcas. I have to base my view on the fact I would like to see these animals in the wild but these facilities also offer homes to animals that are at risk and educate the public.

Fabulous day out

Great place to spend the day. My favourites are the Sea Lion show and the Penguinarium, but there is so much more to see and the park is well organised and impeccably kept. Well worth it.

Definitely Worth A Visit

Couples

What a fantastic day we had visiting Loro Parque, worth every penny (or Euro). We saw the dolphin and orca shows and they was amazing…. Walking round the park you not only get to see a huge array of animals but you get to learn about them too, and you can tell that every member of staff there really cares about the animals in their care. …..Oh and the penguins are a must to see 😁

All in all this a must for day out.

Cruel place. Animals are not cared for properly and are mistreated. The animals are crammed into tiny cages. It is inhumane. I would encourage everyone to not go here.

This place is amazing, the shows are amazing and worth going too. Seeing how much the handlers love their animals is a beautiful thing to witness. The only downside is the rip off they charge for beer and food in there as you can go 5 mins down the road for half the price. The free train is good if you are staying nearby.

So Sorry for this poor animals 🙁

Friends

This place calls itself an animal embassy. .. the truth is, it is nothing but the prison! The cages and tanks are way to small… some animals look quite unhealthy, very sad and depressed 🙁 It is nothing but a money making machine that feeds you lies how amazing research work they do. MORGAN story is all lies, she isn’t deaf, and she isn’t happy there… she is bullied by her tank mates, and she’s been bred illegally. KETO killed his trainer out of frustration, they starve those poor animals to obey their trainers. Do your research people! Do not go there! Do not support animal cruelty! I feel ashamed and guilty visiting this place!

We are very sorry that your experience did not live up to your expectations. It is important to mention that the killer whales and dolphins that live in Loro Parque receive excellent care and quality food, we care for all the animals that are in the zoo and provide the best care that exists. The shows are part of the routine activities of the orcas, sea lions and dolphins and help them stay in good physical shape and develop natural instincts. The trainers are highly qualified and have specialised in the study of the behaviour of these animals, which allows them to be always aware of everything they need and want.

The Loro Park (Zoo) in Puerto de La Cruz (Tenerife)

One of the most famous and beautiful sights in Tenerife is the Loro Park in the resort of Puerto de la Cruz. This zoo, which was founded in 1972 as a small parrot park, is now part of the most beautiful and best zoos in the world. Loro Parque was not completely unknown to us before our visit, because we already knew it from the german ARD documentary series “Parrots, Palms & Co.” and from the VOX documentary series “People, Animals & Doctors”. All the more we were now pleased to be able to visit the park live.

Table of contents

The Loro Park in Tenerife

The Loro Park is located in the north of Tenerife and advertises with the slogan ‘El “must” de Canarias’ all over the island with countless posters. And this is not by chance, because the Loro Park is one of the strongest tourist magnets in the Canary Islands. Since its foundation in 1972, the park has had an influx of over 50 million visitors.

Things to know, opening hours & admission

Originally conceived as a paradise for parrots (Spanish: Loro), the history of the park began on an area of 13,000 m² and 25 employees. Today, it has the largest and most diverse reserve for parrot species and subspecies in the world and offers a home to about 4,500 animals in 570 species on an area of 135,000 m². In addition to biodiversity, the Loro Park is also characterized by the quality of its near-natural facilities and respect for the environment. As a result, the park was awarded the Travellers’ Choice Award as the “Best Zoo in the World” in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

In 1994, the Loro Parque Foundation was founded, which is committed to animal and species protection as well as education and research worldwide in order to promote the conservation of endangered parrots and marine mammals as well as their habitats. Since the foundation was founded, 10 species have already been saved from extinction. We find it interesting that a German founded the Loro Park: Wolfgang Kiessling is still the owner of the park and has also opened other attractions in the Canary Islands, such as the Siam Water Park in Tenerife and the large aquarium ‘Poema del Mar’ on Gran Canaria, which is one of the largest aquariums in the world.

Currently, the park has – due to corona – limited opening hours and is initially only open from Thursday to Monday from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. with limited visitor capacity. Adults pay an entrance fee of 38 EUR, children 26 EUR and children under 5 years have free admission. Parking on the premises costs 4 EUR for the whole day.

The Zoo facility

The total area of Loro Parque is approximately 135,000 m². Everything is very clear and quick to reach, even with strollers. The complex is very well maintained and always offers great views of the local vegetation. Sometimes you feel like you’re in a jungle 🙂 Over 3,000 palm trees were planted on the entire area.

The Parrots

With the parrots, the Loro Park has become known. They are the namesake of the park and to this day their keeping, breeding and protection is an essential focus of the zoo. A total of 350 parrot species can be found in Loro Park; there are about 800 worldwide. Many of these species are threatened with extinction; some species no longer exist in the wild. It is all the more gratifying that certain species (e.B. spix macaw) have already been bred several times in Loro Park and thus preserved from extinction.

The Aquarium

Opened in 1992, Loro Parque’s “Acuario” consists of twelve thematic exhibitions with a total of 1.2 million liters of water. Whether piranhas, clownfish, moray eel or sharks: the zoo is home to countless species of aquatic animals and aquatic plants and recreates ecosystems from different parts of the world. For example, you will also find a large-scale coral reef here. The highlight of the aquarium is an underwater tunnel in which some sharks and rays can also be seen.

The Penguinarium

The Planet Penguin at Loro Parque is considered the largest penguinarium in the world. Since its inauguration in 1999, about 250 penguins from five different species (king, rock, donkey, rein and Humboldt penguins) have been living on almost 2,500 m² in a lifelike reproduced habitat. Here there is up to 12 tons of real snow per day, a large iceberg and polar climate.

What we really liked: Around the glazed front of the penguinarium runs a treadmill, on which you can simply stand on it and watch the penguins relaxed as you drive by.

The Orca Show

The Orca Ocean is the highlight and flagship of Loro Parque. It is considered the most innovative and modern facility for accommodating orcas worldwide and has been specially designed for well-being and built to raise awareness among animals to the public. Six killer whales live here, which have built up a very close connection with each other as well as with their keepers in the many years of living together: Keto, Tekoa, Kohana come from the USA, Adán and Ula were born in Loro Park and Morgan is a wild orca female who was found completely exhausted in the shallow water near the Dutch coast, half-starved and without an associated orca group and later found a new home here in Loro Park.

Unfortunately, there is no way to see the orcas away from the two shows during the day, as their pools are not accessible. The show takes place 1x in the morning and 1x in the afternoon and lasts about 20 to 25 minutes. Up to 3,000 spectators can watch the show, where you can learn a lot about the animals and marvel at the impressive size of the mammals.

The Dolphin Show

Unfortunately, we could not see the dolphin show due to time constraints; but this should also be a real visitor magnet. Opened in 1987, the dolphinarium is considered one of the most modern facilities in the world. There are currently ten dolphins living in Loro Parque, three of which are already over 39 years old. They all form a large family of bottlenose dolphins.

The Sea Lion Show

We watched the show with the sea lions at the very end of our tour of the park and found that this was a very nice end to our day at Loro Parque. Just like the dolphin show, the sea lion show has an edutainment character, i.e. you try to convey Things to know about the animals to the visitor with entertainer elements. The show was really funny and we had the impression that the animals have great fun with the activities – especially if there is fresh fish as a reward 😉

We really enjoyed the day at Loro Parque

We have to admit that it was very crowded in some places. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the park was completely closed for over 1 year due to the corona pandemic and now, of course, many want to visit the park again. On the other hand, there were also some larger groups of cruise ships in the park at the same time. In the afternoon, however, this had dissolved again and we could stroll relaxed through the zoo.

We recommend taking a whole day for loro park, so that you can watch all the enclosures and the shows in peace and also take a relaxing lunch break in between.

Dead at 17: Skyla the Orca Has Died at Loro Parque

Update: March 18, 2021

At only 17 years old, Skyla, the youngest orca at Loro Parque, has died. In 2006, when she was just a 2-year-old, SeaWorld Orlando in Florida kidnapped her from her mother and shipped her to Loro Parque in the Canary Islands. There, she spent her short life in constant confinement. According to Loro Parque, the results of the necropsy showed that the cause of death was intestinal torsion, which caused her to go septic and die. While the cause of intestinal torsion is elusive in a lot of cases, it has been linked to chronic gastrointestinal disease, dietary indiscretion, trauma, and frantic or erratic behavior in cetaceans and an array of other species. While it’s possible for intestinal torsion to develop suddenly and lead rapidly to death, it’s unlikely that her condition wasn’t precipitated by some other malady (like chronic or acute infection), trauma, or abnormal behavior.

Skyla is one of 21 orcas fathered by Tilikum, the subject of Blackfish. He was abducted from his ocean home in Iceland in 1983 when he was only 2 years old, and he died at SeaWorld Orlando in 2017 after being used to produce over half the orcas born at SeaWorld.

Skyla is the latest orca confined to a wholly inadequate tank to die young, but she certainly wasn’t the first and won’t be the last. SeaWorld has seen more than 40 imprisoned orcas die prematurely—and they’ll continue to die young as long as they’re forced to live in small, barren, concrete tanks.

Original post:

Loro Parque (Spanish for “parrot park”) is a zoo and marine theme park located on the island of Tenerife in Spain’s Canary Islands. Loro Parque displays captive birds, dolphins, and sea lions and, in partnership with SeaWorld, keeps orcas in cramped tanks.

© DigitalGlobe | © GRAFCAN

SeaWorld “loaned” the facility four orca calves to launch Loro Parque’s “Orca Ocean” in 2006. Keto and Tekoa came from SeaWorld San Antonio. Kohana and Skyla—who were taken from their mothers at the young ages of 3 and 2, respectively—were from SeaWorld Orlando. These massive ocean-going animals were flown thousands of miles in a wide-body transport plane, and cranes were used to move them from their plane transport pens into the tanks.

SeaWorld was heavily involved in “managing” the orcas, including overseeing their care and training. A SeaWorld senior trainer was reportedly supervising the training session in which Keto killed trainer Alexis Martinez in 2009. After that, SeaWorld tried to distance itself from Loro Parque. In 2018, SeaWorld finally relinquished ownership of the orcas—leaving Loro Parque to breed more orcas into a life of deprivation, contrary to SeaWorld’s corporate policy to end the practice.

We worked with SeaWorld on every aspect of this program.” —Patricia Delponti, Director of Communications and Public Relations at Loro Parque

Since the launch of Orca Ocean, two orcas have been added. Morgan was found stranded and taken from her ocean home to a Dutch dolphinarium on the promise that she would never be publicly displayed and would be released back into the ocean as soon as she was rehabilitated—but that never happened, and she was ultimately transferred to Loro Parque to suffer in confinement. Two calves both inbred, have been born at Loro Parque: Vicky, who died when she was only 10 months old, and Adán.

Two PETA staffers visited Loro Parque and filmed orcas who had fractured teeth and other injuries, listlessly floated in small tanks, and appeared to have mucus running from their eyes. Dr. Heather Rally, a wildlife veterinarian with experience with marine mammals, reviewed the footage.

Here is what Dr. Rally found:

1. Frustrated orcas bite the sides of the tanks.

Orcas are intelligent animals who work cooperatively, have sophisticated social structures, communicate using distinct dialects, and swim up to 100 miles every day. Being denied the opportunity to engage in such natural behavior leaves orcas frustrated. With little else to do, they neurotically mouth and bite the sides and gates of the tanks.

An orca who was confined to one of the smaller back tanks floated on the surface and was seen rubbing his or her head against the concrete.

2. Many orcas have missing or broken teeth.

The orcas’ worn and damaged teeth were visible when they opened their mouths to accept food. Some orcas have teeth that are completely missing or ground down to the gumline. Many of the orcas at Loro Parque had exposed pulp cavities.

Open pulp cavities were identified by Dr. Rally on the left side of this orca’s mouth. Orcas often fracture their teeth when biting on hard surfaces in their tanks. Fractured teeth are prone to infection, and orcas are often forced to endure drilling procedures that are likely painful because of the presence of nerves and living tissue inside the teeth.

Park workers drill into the teeth in order to open a cavity that allows for daily cleaning.

This daily cleaning is done to reduce the risk of serious infection that can cause illness or even death in captive orcas when their teeth inevitably become fractured or severely worn. However, some orcas still suffer from these complications in spite of the procedure.

Skyla was observed begging for food at the stage. She appears to have a missing tooth.

According to Dr. Rally, orcas in nature don’t typically lose their teeth, so Skyla’s tooth was likely pulled because of trauma or an infection. Several of her other teeth are worn down to expose the pulp cavity. Also, note the blue tint on some of the orcas’ teeth. It may be from the tank’s blue paint.

As a result of unnatural behavior such as biting and chewing on the concrete or other hard surfaces in their tanks, the first three or four teeth on both sides of Keto’s mouth are completely or partially worn down.

After performing a trick, Keto again opened his mouth and revealed exposed pulp chambers on four teeth that are completely worn down to the gum line.

A third orca appeared to Dr. Rally to already have significant wear on several teeth.

Tekoa, confined to the smaller medical tank, opened his mouth, exposing a number of pulp cavities.

3. Orcas float listlessly and exhibit atypical behavior.

Wild orcas are inquisitive, energetic, and almost always on the move. Orcas at Loro Parque often float motionless at the surface, repeatedly bob, or beg nearby trainers for food.

Keto was seen floating at a gate and eventually turned onto his side in what Dr. Rally says may have been an effort to keep an eye on the trainers walking over the bridge.

At the conclusion of one of the shows, this orca proceeded to float lethargically on his or her side and bob up and down.

Apparently prompted by lack of stimulation or a search for food, Adán, the youngest orca at Loro Parque, slid in and out of the water.

This odd behavior was seen repeatedly.

4. Trainers lock orcas in the smaller tanks and ignore them.

Orcas are sometimes kept isolated in holding tanks, and trainers pay little attention to them. From the very beginning of Orca Ocean, SeaWorld officials taught Loro Parque orca trainers, including during sessions at SeaWorld’s San Antonio and Orlando parks. SeaWorld’s corporate mindset and how its trainers view and treat the orcas have driven the trainers’ attitudes at Loro Parque.

Orcas have so little to keep their bodies and minds engaged that they beg nearby trainers for food by opening their mouths. The Loro Parque trainers, who learned from SeaWorld trainers how to interact with orcas, generally ignore them.

These two orcas, Kohana and Keto, were filmed while locked in a medical tank, which is also used as a holding tank. They attempted to get food or attention from trainers, but they were completely ignored.

Without sufficient space to swim around, they continued to float listlessly.

An orca believed to be Morgan was observed by Dr. Rally in the back tank splashing and trying to get the attention of a nearby trainer.

Tekoa was locked in the medical tank for the duration of the second show. According to Dr. Rally, he exhibited signs of agitation and a need for mental stimulation as he bobbed up and down, floated aimlessly, and lingered near the gate.

5. Orcas have “rake marks” caused by aggression and attacks from tankmates.

Rake marks appear when dominant animals scrape their teeth against the skin of less aggressive animals. Lower-ranking members of the forced and unnatural grouping are routinely bullied but have no way to escape. These attacks can result in painful and serious injuries, and some have reportedly been so severe that blood seeped from orcas’ wounds.

This orca, who was locked backstage, has a small rake mark on the side of the body.

Morgan, who slid out of the water during a performance, has two sets of rake marks on her left side.

Tekoa slid out and rotated on stage during a performance. Dr. Rally observed extensive rake marks on both sides of his body that ran from his head to his tail fluke. The orca’s dorsal fin also appears to be collapsing, which is the result of having inadequate space to swim and dive.

Later, Tekoa flipped onto his side, exposing rake marks along his body and fin.

6. Some of the orcas have mucus running from their eyes.

The observers and Dr. Rally saw a clear mucus-like substance hanging from Keto’s left eye, possibly because of irritation from the chemically treated water.

Loro Parque – A birds eye view

Hidden in the Canary Islands, the Loro Park Foundation has created a paradise for parrots, and for parrot lovers.

Its History

In 1972, Wolfgang Kiessling opened Loro Parque, a parrot park of only 1.3 hectares (3.1 acres), in the hamlet of Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast of Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands of Spain.
The location of Loro Parque was well chosen in space and in time because, as tourism has thrived on Tenerife during the past three decades, so has Loro Parque been able to expand to an area of 13. 5 ha (33 acres) and develop into not just the world’s premier parrot park, but also a world class zoological park in all its attributes. Furthermore, the combination of sub-tropical latitude (28oN) and ameliorating effect of a cold current in the surrounding Atlantic Ocean, creates near-perfect climatic conditions for maintaining and breeding parrots. When the Spanish first reached the islands, they dubbed them the “fortunate islands”, especially because of the wonderful climate. This feature, together with the first rate installations established by Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Fundación, have created a paradise for parrots, and for parrot lovers.

The Park Today

Tiger Island – Loro Parque

Nowadays, as many as 1.5 million visitors a year come to Loro Parque to see its parrots and other attractions. Passing through the elegant Thai architecture of the entrance, visitors enter a botanical and zoological paradise. Luxuriant vegetation abounds, cocooning the visitor for the several hours of his or her visit and creating multiple microclimates for the benefit of the animals. For those who want to see parrots, there is no chance that they will miss them. Some 800 parrots are exhibited in the park, representing as large a diversity of forms as can be found on exhibition anywhere in the world. In Loro Parque they form the fabric of the park, being spread throughout almost the entire area and capturing the attention of the visitors as only parrots know how in addition to the other animal attractions. The philosophy behind the exhibition of such a variety of parrots has remained constant throughout the life of Loro Parque.It is that people, by being amazed at their myriad colours, their endearing antics and their great variety, cannot only feel that they have had a great day out at the park, but also that they can better know and respect these charismatic birds. Willingness to support conservation efforts follows on from knowledge and respect, and this has been an ever-increasing outcome, which is the central role of the Loro Parque Fundación. But more on that later.

Their main focuses are: Parrot Park, Breeding, Continued Education and Conservation.

The Attractions

Let us get the full flavour of Loro Parque by looking at what other attractions dwell amidst the greenery. The first encounter is likely to be with the park ́s bachelor group of gorillas, five huge silver-backs living remarkably harmoniously. These animals form part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) for the species and, when there is a need for a new male to assume the leadership of a group of females and youngsters in another participating zoo, Loro Parque is on stand-by to supply the lucky male. Not far away is a close relative, the chimpanzee family, originally formed from some animals which were confiscated by the relevant government authorities in Tenerife after having been used for beach photography with tourists. With the correct care at Loro Parque, these animals are completely integrated into a well-balanced group, where breeding has taken place. The tigers are another attraction where Loro Parque showed its social responsibility by accepting into its superior care animals which had been confiscated from lamentable conditions. The other species of large cat to be found in the park is the jaguar, with both normal pelage and in the black phase.

Penguins

One of the newest complexes is the penguinarium, the largest to be found anywhere and a hi-tech climate-controlled exhibition which duplicates to a high degree the natural environment of these birds. In the polar exhibit co-exist three species, the King, Gentoo and Rock-hopper Penguins which the visitors can see on their snow-covered rocks, or under the water swimming at amazing speed. Just opposite is a group of Atlantic Puffins, northern counterparts of the penguins, and in the most recent section is a colony of threatened Humboldt Penguins, another EEP species, which enjoy the higher temperatures associated with their native coastline of the Atacama Desert.

One of the newest complexes is the penguinarium, the largest hi-tech climate-controlled exhibition to be found anywhere!

 Aquarium

Shark Tunnel – Loro Parque

Another “must-see” is the aquarium, with its shark tunnel and a stunning variety of salt and freshwater exhibits from the tropics to temperate zones. Other aquatic exhibits of note are those of the American Alligators and of the thousands of Koi Carp in a lily-covered lake by the park entrance, which they share with the equally showy Lesser Flamingos. The larger Chilean Flamingos, Crowned and Demoiselle Cranes adorn grassy spaces in other parts of the park, and the visitor will come across oddities such as Rhinoceros Iguanas from the Cayman Islands and Giant Galapagos Tortoises.

However, in the popularity stakes, what surely must be mentioned are the shows, with Bottlenose Dolphins, Californian Sea lions and parrots. The dolphins and the sea-lions each have their own open-air stadium, where shows are presented several times a day. The visitors flock to these presentations to see the spectacular demonstrations of the natural skills and intelligence, which these animals possess. Each stadium has its behind-the-scenes management pools, and the animals never need to do a show if they don’t want to. On the contrary, sometimes it is difficult to stop them from wanting to join in! As its name implies, the Loro Show is where the parrots perform and demonstrate that they are the “primates of the bird world”! As with the dolphins and sea lions, this carefully selected group of parrots has its own team of dedicated trainers who develop a unique bond with the animals.  The Loro Show takes place inside a very large building of Moorish style, dubbed the “Parrot Palace”, where the flying macaws wow the visitors with their colours and grace. The other place which wows the visitors is the Baby Station, where people can watch experienced handlers hand feeding parrots of all ages from day one. The prevailing philosophy is to leave the parent parrots to rear their own young but, in such a large collection, inevitably things will sometimes go wrong and we have to intervene to hand raise the young birds. This we do with a lot of TLC, and people love to see how we do it.

Parrots

The parrots of the Loro Show and all other parrots on exhibition in the park are owned by the Loro Parque Fundación (LPF). When this was created in 1994, Loro Parque donated its entire parrot collection to the LPF, which now loans back a proportion for public exhibition. At the same time, Loro Parque donated a 3 ha (7.2 acres) former banana plantation, at 200 m (660 feet) elevation and a few kilometres south of Loro Parque, for the creation of the LPF breeding centre, and also paid for the entire construction of what is now one of the world’s parrot wonders. This centre is not open to the general public, but can be visited by members of the LPF.

The parrot collection of the LPF currently stands at about 3,500 birds of 349 species and subspecies, and the breeding centre contains more than 1,000 aviaries which are equally divided between two units which are different in character.

One is covered with a translucent light blue mesh, creating conditions more suitable for parrots from more open natural habitats, and the other is covered with dense black mesh for the species normally found in closed forests. Each mesh also has an important function to exclude wild birds, which might transport diseases. Furthermore, any parrot, which might escape from its aviary, is contained within the mesh and can be re-captured. Over the past years, the vegetation in the breeding centre has matured and now creates almost a sense of natural habitat surrounding the aviaries. Many of the trees and other plants in the centre bear edible fruits, such as papayas, oranges and guavas, which can be included in the diets of the parrots.

The Research Facilities

Breeding

The breeding centre forms a very important part of the overall activities of the LPF, which was created with the following mission:

“to conserve parrots and their habitats, through education, applied research, responsible breeding programs, and community based conservation activities that use parrots as ambassadors for nature”.

The responsible breeding programmes contribute to conservation in several ways. Firstly, because the LPF usually maintains several pairs of each taxonomic form, the parrot collection is a substantial genetic reserve or “bank” for the future. Secondly, the collection contains some species of highly threatened status in the wild, and these species are maintained and bred in cooperative programmes to maintain viable “safety-net” populations, which might be suitable for future reintroduction. These programmes can be directly with governments, as is the case with Brazil and the guacamaya spixii-pareja Spix’s Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii, a species now extinct in the wild and only possible to recover by captive breeding and release. A difficult species to breed, this year the LPF has successfully reared a youngster. The programmes can also be with the regional zoo community, in our case with the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, and the LPF participates in 29 European Endangered Species Programmes (EEPs), and European and International Studbooks. The LPF is the international studbook keeper and EEP coordinator for the Blue-Throated macaw Ara glaucogularis, a species with possibly no more than 50 wild birds left in its native Bolivia, and EEP coordinator for the Red-Browed Amazon Amazona rhodocorytha. It is also the studbook keeper for the Red and Blue Lory Eos histrio, the Mount Apo Lorikeet Trichoglossus johnstoniae and the Red- spectacled Amazon A. pretrei.

Thirdly, the LPF sells the young bred each year of commoner species, as many as 1,300 in 2003, with two conservation outcomes. The first is that the LPF supplies captive bred birds to the market, thus under-cutting and diminishing the trade in wild-caught parrots. The other is that it dedicates 100% of the income to its conservation projects, which are spread around the globe. In fact, because all of the LPF administration costs are covered by its principal supporter, Loro Parque, any other income from any source can be directed in its entirety to the conservation and welfare projects. Unsurprisingly, donors appreciate this fact, as well as knowing that the LPF is a registered non-profit organisation. Referring again to the LPF mission, the parrot collection forms an unrivalled research resource, and there is an ongoing programme of investigation in various fields, in collaboration with universities from many countries, and giving the opportunity for students to gain parrot research and management experience. To mention just some subjects, there is strong emphasis on diets and nutrition research, the objective being to constantly improve the nutritional plane, welfare and breeding of parrots not just in the LPF collection, but for all captive parrots. There are studies investigating the causes of feather-plucking and examining growth rates in parent-reared and hand-reared young. Disease and health investigations include Proventricular Dilatation Disease, Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease and Polyoma virus.

Education

The other use of the collection is for education, and the LPF runs the entire Loro Parque education service, creating all the materials and organising the school groups which visit the park in their many thousands each year. Furthermore, to raise awareness and disseminate information, the LPF runs specialist parrot workshops (in various languages), and every four years organizes and hosts in Tenerife the International Parrot Convention, the next one of which will be 27th to 30th September 2006.

Conservation

This account cannot be complete without mentioning what the LPF does for the conservation of parrots in the wild. Since its inception, the LPF has had a portfolio of projects to conserve threatened species of parrots and their wild habitats, through working with governments, NGOs and local communities, to implement protection and restoration measures, research programmes, and awareness and education initiatives.

To date the LPF has, with almost 3 million Euros, financed and implemented 37 projects covering 17 parrot-rich countries and benefiting 58 parrot species. Currently it has 15 active field projects, which it finances with an average of 400,000 Euros per year.

Spix’s Macaw Cyanopsitta spixii, a species now extinct in the wild

Perhaps the best-known, but still most challenging of these is for the recovery of the Spix’s Macaw. Although recovery now must entirely be from captive birds, during the 10 years until it finally disappeared in December 2000, the LPF supported fieldwork on the last wild male and his mate, a female Illiger’s Macaw Propyrrhura maracana. This produced a great deal of biological information which can be applied to the controlled release of captive birds in the future. Also during the same decade, the field team undertook habitat protection and restoration measures, and worked closely with the local community to develop a strong sense of pride in this little blue macaw, such that future efforts can build on this investment already made.

Blue-throated macaw – Ara glaucogularis

The plight of the Blue-throated Macaw has already been mentioned and, since 1993, the LPF has been collaborating with the Bolivian NGO Armonía to bring about its natural recovery. This species is confined to the seasonally inundated grasslands of Beni, north-east Bolivia, where it requires tree and palm-covered islands for nesting and food. This habitat is on private cattle-ranches, and Armonía is working with landowners to persuade them to adopt land management practices less damaging to macaw habitat.

Armonía also mounts education campaigns, and in other ways, it is trying to tackle the continuing hard-to-detect poaching of chicks from nests. In 2003, LPF and Armonia produced the official Species Recovery Plan for the Blue-throated Macaw. Another South American project, this time in Columbia, is for the critically endangered Yellow-eared parrot Ognorhynchus icterotis, which, might be taken off the critical list of the project, continues to enjoy such high success. The Yellow-eared Parrot has a special relationship to the wax palm Ceroxylon for feeding and nesting, and dramatically declined due to the loss of this habitat.

Armonia is working with land-owners to persuade them to adopt land management practices less damaging to the macaw.

However, the field activities by Fundación ProAves, LPF’s collaborator in Colombia, have raised the population from 81 in 1999 to more than 600 now. On the other side of the world there are other LPF projects to mention. One is for the conservation of the Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary, working together with the Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, and with oversight from the Thai Royal Palace. This is a more general bio-diversity and community awareness project, which intends to minimize the impact on the sanctuary of the people who live in the many villages, which surround its border. To be sure, there are interesting parrots to conserve in the sanctuary, such as Finsch’s Parakeet Psittacula finschii, not to mention tigers, elephants and other large beasts.

Another Asian project with LPF involvement is the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program, which is attempting to recover the wild population of Cacatua haematuropygia from an all time low due to deforestation and illegal trade. Centred on Palawan, the remaining stronghold for this species, the project has been successful in enlisting local people to guard the known nests in various localities, and as a result the population seems to be edging-up locally.

Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Fundación will continue with their quest to conserve parrots in the wild, provide the best possible welfare in captivity, and to make a visit to a parrot park in Puerto de la Cruz the most memorable experience ever. Please join us!

Loro Parque, Tenerife – photos, performances, opening hours, location, prices

The most hospitable island of the Canary archipelago is also the most extensive. Tenerife is called the island of eternal spring, for its climatic features and the luxury of tropical nature. Loro Park occupies a special place among the attractions. You can spend a whole day in it without noticing the passage of time.

The island is known as a major Spanish resort. Despite its small size, the number of vacationers on it is large, and the southern regions are more suitable for noisy parties and numerous entertainments, while the northern ones are more suitable for contemplative relaxation and enjoyment of silence. But everyone wants to visit the zoo in Tenerife, known as Loro Parque. 9Ol000 Structure and representations in Loro Parque

If we look at the location of Loro Parque on the map of Tenerife, we can see that it occupies an impressive area of 135.000 m² in the north of the island, shaped like a slightly deformed square, where the protruding part is a pool for killer whales.

The park began with a parrot given to the boy Wolfgang Kiesling for his birthday. He grew up and became a successful businessman. German pragmatism in him successfully coexisted with a whole fountain of unusual ideas. Arriving in Tenerife, he appreciated the wonderful climate and the favorable location of the island, took into account the high attendance by tourists and drew attention to the abundance of birds, among which the vast majority were bright and energetic parrots.

Realizing that an ordinary zoo will quickly lose popularity, he decided to create a whole town where entertaining shows will be held, souvenirs will be sold, catering points will operate and numerous inhabitants from penguins to monkeys will live.

Parrot Park was opened in 1972, it was constantly expanded, rebuilt and improved, turning into a complex, where are located:

  • penguinarium;
  • shark and jellyfish aquariums;
  • zoological garden;
  • killer whale pool;
  • orchid garden;
  • gorilla enclosures;
  • playground;
  • cinema;
  • porcelain parrot museum.

Bearing in mind that interest is supported by a constant change of impressions, the owner took care of organizing spectacular shows. Their peculiarity lies in the fact that each takes place several times a day. In total, there are 4 sites where various animals perform. The show schedule of Loro Parque is designed in such a way that you can visit each of them, taking time between performances for leisurely walks or lunch.

Dolphin and fur seal performances are quite traditional and performed at the highest level. It is interesting to see them, but only once.

Total per day in the park:

  • 5 shows with sea lions;
  • 4 – with dolphins;
  • 6 traditional performances with parrots;
  • 3 – with killer whales.

To visit all the performances, you need to think over the route in advance and check the schedule of performances. It can be found at the general stand or in free booklets at the entrance to Loro Parque. Each show lasts about 20 minutes.

Killer whale shows

They have been held since 2006, when the first killer whales appeared in specially built pools, and a powerful tail between a penguin and a parrot was added to the emblem. While the rest of the shows follow a well-ordered routine and are a bit boring with predictability, the pool with predatory marine life is always lively.

The artists are quite wayward, so they dictate how the performance will go, and the pool staff can only adapt to the difficult character of local stars. There are several shows throughout the day, each one unique and worth watching. Many visitors come back here again, especially since you do not need to pay separately for viewing, this is included in the price of the entrance ticket.

Paradise Refrigerator

Tenerife’s climate is uncomfortable for penguins, but they don’t know it. Penguinarium is considered the best in Europe and one of the largest in the world. For the comfort of the inhabitants, snow cannons are installed, the optimum temperature is maintained and truly royal food is organized.

Inhabitants of the zoo

A unique spectacle opens at the enclosure with gorillas. 7 huge powerful males peacefully spend time in a cozy territory, completely unwilling to find out who is the boss in the house. They are just lazy. There is enough space, plenty of food, so all that remains is to meditate, lazily examining the visitors fussing on the other side of the enclosure.

In addition to gorillas, marmosets, jaguars, tigers, red pandas, sloths, anteaters, meerkats live in the park. Flamingos, cranes and herons, turtles feel at ease. In separately fenced enclosures, you can watch crocodiles. They are also always full and very lazy.

The exception is Japanese carp in the artificial pond at the entrance to Loro Park. It is worth throwing a piece of bread into the water, as a real battle unfolds there. The fish are fed very well, but natural greed wins.

The emblem of the park is the parrot, there are more than 4,000 of them, belonging to 350 species. About 700 individuals are shown to visitors. The performance with them is quite traditional, allowing the older generation to remember their childhood, where a bright bird also pulled out a ticket with fate and obediently swung on a small swing.

Loro Parque ticket prices

Variety of experiences, comfortable layout, colorful shows and snacks allow you to spend the whole day in the park. A ticket is required to enter the territory. The price for an adult is 38 euros, for children it costs 26. Tenerife has another famous entertainment center called Siam Park. It is also made in oriental style and is very interesting to visit.

There is a single ticket for both parks, called the Twin Ticket, which offers a small cost savings.

Address and opening hours of Loro Parque

Official address: Avenida Loro Parque s/n. Knowing where Loro Park is located in Tenerife, getting to it is very easy, especially since the island is relatively small. You can join a tour group or take a taxi on your own.

Work starts at 8.30, entrance to the territory stops at 16.00, the last visitors leave at 18.30. Then the feeding of the inhabitants begins, cleaning the enclosures and other daily activities, where the extraneous presence only distracts.

Reviews of visiting Loro Park

Alina, 29 years old:

My son and I spent the whole day in the park, we realized it only in the evening, it is so interesting and convenient there. There is a playground, small cafes, the menu leaves much to be desired, but it is quite suitable for a snack. I really liked the show of killer whales and fur seals, we noticed the stickers on the seats in time and climbed higher, otherwise we would have left soaking wet.

Maksim, 42 years old:

A solid, well-organized park. Respect to the creator, thought through almost all the details. It was interesting to watch the parrots, they are really very cunning in their own way, they instantly smell the benefits, they have their own character. I spent my time with pleasure, I think that the price of the ticket is quite consistent with the impressions received.

It is located on a hilly area, on an area of 13.5 hectares and almost every corner of the earth is occupied by its needs. The whole area is a large garden of numerous species of tropical and subtropical plants, creating the image of a wild jungle. In order to visit all the exhibitions, shows, entertainment, you need to set aside enough time to explore the theme park area, which is not visible through, at least about 5 hours is worth taking into account.

When you come to the park, do not forget to take a booklet (map) that shows in detail the sights, enclosures with pets, the location of the show and their schedule. Your best bet is to map out an itinerary through the booklet, going from start to finish, paying attention to the start time of each show, and when it ends, jump straight to the next. The peak of visits is at 12, 13 and 14 o’clock in the afternoon, so if you want to have good seats for performances, then you should come early.

History

The founder of Loro Park is German-born Wolfgang Kiessling, together with his father. Previously working as a manager in an airline, Wolfgang visited the island of Tenerife with his wife and could not help but fall in love with the nature of these places, deciding for himself to stay permanently. After exploring the island and going to the beach, the question arose that I needed to do something. At that time, many solutions for starting a business were considered and it was decided to create a small and modest park of parrots, due to the small availability of funds and investments.

Wolfgang was looking for land to host a bird park in Tenerife, but at the time it was necessary to have a Spanish partner to make it official, which didn’t suit them. Then the notary offered them to buy a house and turn it into a hotel, and already in the hotel you can have some additional options, such as a park or a tennis court. A five-star hotel was created with only five rooms.

In 1972 the first show with birds is created, at that time it was the first show with parrots in Europe. Exceptional guests, politicians, film actors came to the hotel. A lot of money and efforts were spent on the hotel, without giving practically any profit, although the park brought more and more money each time, including even having to invest in the hotel from his earnings. At 19In 79, it was decided to close the hotel, as the laws had changed. Now the Kissling family lives in this house, located on the territory of Loro Park.

In 1995, the Kisslings saw fit to reinvest in the hospitality business by purchasing the award winning hotel “Botanico y Oriental Spa Garden”.

Soon, additional investments are made for the penguin pavilion, followed by one of the most expensive investments, the Orka Ocean complex for killer whales. By constantly investing and improving the business, Wolfgang improves the entertainment experience for travelers and locals arriving in Tenerife, making the island richer and more interesting, especially impressing our future generation, children. In 2008, one of the best water parks in Europe opens in the south, initially laying the Thai theme in its design, calling Siam a park, and this is the merit of the Kissling family.

Entertainment show

Killer whale show

The killer whale is the largest species of the dolphin family, an order of cetaceans with teeth, is a marine mammal. Sometimes they are called killer whales at a time when they can be hungry, they attack mostly in packs on whales, sharks, dolphins or penguins. If there is enough food, then they may well coexist with other species of cetaceans.

“Orca Ocean” is a water stadium specially built for killer whales and their welfare. Opened in February 2006, housing 4 new sea pets that arrived from the US and were born there in the pool. They were named Keto, Tekoa, Kohana and Skyla. The stadium is the most modern and innovative in the world, with large viewing windows in depth, cameras are installed that display the image on a large television screen.

In April 2006, the stadium had to be closed for repairs due to its destruction by killer whales, and after 3 months, it starts its work again on June 3. After the restoration work, additional security measures and improvements were made.

Orca Okean currently has six killer whales, four were joined by Adan (born in Loro Parque) and Morgan (rescued off the coast of the Netherlands and brought to Tenerife for survival). Now all living animals have developed a close bond between themselves and between their trainers. Proof of this are the amazing shows with the largest mammals.

The attraction of the show is that killer whales perform various tricks, implicitly obeying the command of tamers, they do many things that they would not be able to do in their normal habitat. After the start of the show, you are initially shown several joke numbers. Be aware that in the lower rows you can be splashed with a large amount of water from the water stadium, for this purpose you need to purchase a raincoat for 3 euros. Many do this in order to experience emotions and joy, but it may be different, having bought and put on a raincoat, but there will be no desired splashes, here for good luck. Who wants to avoid being raw, then rise to the top ranks.

Dolphin Show

Dolphins are mammals from the cetacean order, the dolphin family. The bottlenose dolphin or big dolphin – this species has been living in the water stadium of Loro Park since 1987 and entertaining travelers visiting them. Since then, several offspring have been bred in captivity and trained for performance. Bottlenose dolphins are considered one of the smart and attractive marine animals, which are always a pleasure to admire for children and adults, they bring joy, smiles and good mood.

Of course, for those people who have been in dolphinariums before, you will not see anything new, all the same somersaults, jumping out of the water into a suspended hoop and small entertainment programs, but still, you should be given a good mood and pleasant emotions.

Swimming with dolphins is not allowed, including touching. Some lucky little ones (children) from the audience are lucky enough to ride a boat during the show, which is pulled by sea pets, then they offer to stroke or even kiss him goodbye for the trick with the dolphin.

Sea lion show

Sea lions (a family of eared seals) have their own water stadium, showing high-level shows with elements of comedy and animation. These interesting marine mammals have a great sense of humor and will keep you entertained throughout the show. Loro Park has extensive experience in keeping and raising baleen sea lions. Since their settlement, more than 30 juveniles have been born here.

Show of parrots

They built their own hall for parrots for their performances. You sit in your seats and watch how parrots can ride bicycles, can distinguish the shapes of the Canary Islands in pictures, count numbers, fly over the audience, etc. Not only large birds, but also small ones take part in the show. Comic shows with smart elements will certainly not leave you indifferent to these birds.

Naturavision show

3D cinema – located under the dome of mirrors, which will immerse you in the world of nature and try to convey to you through a documentary – the magic of the living environment around us. Since May 2016, the animated film “Rio” has been shown in 3D as a high-resolution projector.

Aquarium

Coral reefs were exhibited for the first time on such a large scale in the Aquarium of Loro Park. Reefs are the marine ecosystem most endangered. Today, in twelve large aquariums, there are more than a hundred species of aquatic life collected from all over the world, some of them: catfish, colorful freshwater rays, Pacu (Amazon fish), brilliant piranhas, clown fish, jellyfish and majestic tunnels with various species of marine animals and sharks. Everything you see in one place creates a symphony of colors that dazzles visitors of all ages and is not to be missed.

Exhibition – Living Water

AquaViva is a real underwater performance of hundreds of magical jellyfish shimmering in different colors, including up to the emission of fluorescence colors. With an uncanny appearance, these curious jellyfish with amazing and elegant shapes have practically become the protagonists in the new exhibition “Water of Life”, designed not so long ago especially for you. Before your eyes, they reveal to you all the details of their unusual life, which is shrouded in mystery at a time when they are in their familiar environment. In addition, visitors can discover impressive sharks such as Malagasy nocturnal and long-winged sharks, as well as hundreds of tropical multicolored fish.

Medusa is 98% water

Penguinarium

Passing through an ice tunnel, you find yourself in an artificially created environment where temperature and light conditions are practically indistinguishable from the Arctic. This is to ensure that the four species of penguins (Humboldt, King, Northern Crested and Antarctic) can live in comfort and safety for their health.

In Antarctica, these seabirds form huge colonies to take advantage of the fishery in the ecosystem that appears every spring in the Arctic Circle. Unfortunately, this wealth is under serious threat due to changes in the circulation of waters in the oceans, contributing to climate change.

Porcelain Parrot Museum

Porcelain Parrot Museum brings together a unique collection of artistic works created over the past three centuries by the great masters of porcelain art.

Porcelain in the 18th century was called “white gold”, as it was then sold on a par with gold and was previously traditionally Chinese. On January 15, 1708, porcelain was reinvented by Johann Friedrich Böttger in Europe, and in January 1710, the first European hard porcelain manufactory was founded in the empty Albrechtsburg castle in Meissen. Until that time, the production of everyday items was limited, but soon everything changed. In the following years, real famous sculptors produce artistic works such as parrot figures, which will be seen by the founders of Loro Parque and exhibited in this museum.

Orchid

According to Confucius, the famous Chinese philosopher, the orchid is the “Queen of fragrant flowers”, and I think we all agree with this…

Therefore, a real garden has been created for you in Loro Parque from different species of the orchid family, where you could enjoy and appreciate them. Breathe in this sweet fragrance while observing their richness of form and color that these outstanding plants filled with tenderness exhale. There are approximately 200 varieties of orchids in Europe and Tenerife, some of which are terrestrial, others will be epiphytes and lithophytes that cannot tolerate mineralized water, so distilled water is used for irrigation.

Kinderlandia

Kinderlandia is an interesting and entertaining place for children, created in a thicket of tropical trees in a small jungle. This is a small town of large recreated trees, rope tunnels, descent on a serpentine hill. Also nearby is a roller coaster called “Orca Train”, where children and adults can experience the power of gravity. While the kids are frolicking, adults can drink a cup or two at the Bambu Bar, looking at their frolics, who will certainly not remain indifferent to the entertainment.

Katandra Treetops

Opened in September 2009 “Katandra Treetops” park, with the name meaning in the Australian Aboriginal language – “Birdsong” and Treetops – “Treetops”, referring to the uppermost part of the forest.

All this gives us an understanding of a large and grandiose poultry house, specially designed for you, with hundreds of birds of various species and subspecies. Once in it, you seem to be moving into an Australian forest, with stretched bridges leading to the crowns of trees. Along the way, you come face to face with parrots – cockatoos and other bird species. The Katandra Tritops is one of the most impressive free-flying aviaries on the planet.

Baby Station

“Baby Station” is a small area inside the reserve for caring for chicks (incubator), which opens up to visitors the care of baby parrots that are born and raised here.

Baby Station has a modern laboratory that allows you to see the activity of veterinary care, which represents the daily work on the analysis of samples received, both from animals and water samples in the ponds installed in the park.

Thai Village

Tenerife is believed to have the largest Thai village built outside of Thailand. When owner Wolfgang Kiessling planned to create a new entrance to Loro Park, it was decided to construct something in the form of exotic buildings. Having visited several countries, he decided to recreate the traditional architecture of Thailand, but for this he needed to obtain permission from the royal family of the Asian country, find artisans capable of developing all the items and deliver them by ship to Tenerife. Soon Thai laborers took a trip to the island to collect new colorful and great architecture outside of Thailand.

Loro Parque in Tenerife: excursion, how to get there, address, tickets

Loro Parque is the most popular place among tourists on the island of Tenerife. The Parrot Park is a successful commercial project in the Canary Islands with over forty million visitors every year. Loro Parque is located in the suburbs of Puerto de la Cruz. On an area of more than 13 hectares, there is a huge variety of marine and land animals, plants and birds. The word “most” accompanies the park constantly, without any exaggeration. He has many records to his credit.

How Loro Parque was born

The park was first opened to visitors in 1792. It was founded by businessman Wolfgang Kisling, who from childhood felt sympathy for these multi-colored birds. Initially, only 150 parrots lived on one hectare of land. A few decades later, their number increased to 4000, in which 350 species and subspecies gathered. The collection of parrots of Loro Parque is the largest in the world, therefore this place is the most important center for the study and conservation of the parrot population.

With an increase in the number of inhabitants, the park began to expand, and gradually more and more residents began to appear in it. So the Parrot Park grew into a zoo. On the territory now it was possible to meet not only parrots, but also marine life, inhabitants of the jungle, penguins. The entire area of the park was equipped for the living conditions of animals, and the rest of the space was planted with a wide variety of plants.

Loro Parque now

Today Loro Parque is a square, a zoo and a botanical garden, it has become home to thousands of animals and plants. Now you can meet there:

  • tigers, jaguars, African lions;
  • killer whales, dolphins, sharks, sea lions;
  • meerkats, anteaters, sloths;
  • flamingos, pelicans;
  • chimpanzees, marmosets, gorillas.

This is only a small part of the list of inhabitants of the Parrot Park. But it is worth noting that this is not a simple zoo – every day there are various shows with the participation of animals. Sea lions perform five times a day, dolphins four, parrots six, and three Orca shows with killer whales.

In the wild birds zone, birds can be seen outside their cages, almost in their natural environment.

Also definitely worth a walk through the 18-meter glass tunnel, where giant sharks will swim over the heads of visitors.

On the territory of Loro Park there is the largest penguinarium in Europe, which consists of two hundred birds, and a dolphinarium (1,200,00 liters), and the total number of marine life reaches 15,000 individuals. Tourists are invited to take a ride along the moving path and leisurely observe the measured life of penguins, which are so clumsy on land and very dexterous in the water.

In addition, the park has a huge greenhouse with different species of orchids, some of which are very rare.

Don’t miss out on the Thai-style village. There you can find wooden buildings with roofs covered with real gold. In this village there is the largest building outside the Asian kingdom, made in this style, the Queen of Thailand herself came to see it.

Interesting Facts

Such a large park has a lot of things that are ordinary for employees, but will be amazing for ordinary people:

  • to recreate the necessary climatic conditions for penguins per day, the generator produces twelve tons of snow;
  • Loro Parque is the second place in Europe where killer whales live and breed;
  • tourists see only 700 parrots out of 4000;
  • every year 1500 chicks are born there, which replenish the population of rare birds in the natural environment;
  • on 135,000 square meters there are hundreds of exotic plants and 7,000 palm trees.

There are many more such interesting details, but it is better to see once than to read a hundred times.

How to get to the Parrot Park

You can get to the most popular place in the Canaries by car on the highway to Puerto de la Cruz. After that, you will come across signs along the way that will not let you get lost. Loro Park is located in the western part of the suburb. Parking is paid, around 5 euros.

If you leave Playa de las Americas, you can take bus number 343. The journey takes about two hours. Poisoning at 9:00 and at 11:30. It makes no sense to go at a later time, since Loro Parque is open until 18:30, and the entrance is until 17:00. Return bus at 18:00.

If you are coming from Puerto de la Cruz, there is a fake train for adults and children that goes to the park from McDonald’s on the waterfront in the eastern part of the city. Interval 20 minutes.

The distance from the southern resorts is about 120 kilometers. It takes about three hours by bus, and about an hour and a half by car. Taking a taxi for such a long trip will cost much more. Another way to get there is to rent a car. If you do not drive, then it is best to book a transfer through your travel agency.

Loro Park. Spain in Russian – all about life in Spain

The island of Tenerife is famous all over the world for its velvety climate and good weather that reigns here almost all year round. Unlike Ibiza and other party places, couples with children and the elderly prefer to come here on vacation. The infrastructure of the island is ideal for children of all ages, the possibilities for family recreation and recreation are very wide. We will tell you about the best and most interesting for you and your family.

Loro Parque in Tenerife (Loro Parque, Parrot Park)

A must-see wonder of wonders, one of the most popular places on the island, and here’s why. This is one of the largest zoos in Europe, opened in 1954. It was founded by a German entrepreneur who decided to show his collection of parrots for money to everyone. Over the years, other animals settled here, and a vast area was planted with tropical plants. The old part of Loro Park is a real jungle! Today it is both a zoo and a botanical garden with more than 1000 species of orchids, and a show of dolphins, killer whales and penguins, and a huge aquarium. There are no enclosures and cages, unpleasant odors and crowds.

Oddly enough, here, almost at the equator, there is the largest collection of penguins in the world, which feel great in the zoo. Special cannons throw out up to 15 tons of artificial snow per day to the delight of the black-and-white inhabitants of the Planet of the Penguins pavilion. About 200 penguins of various species live here, which you can watch comfortably sitting on a travolator that moves around the entire pavilion.

You will see the world’s largest collection of parrots, some species are no longer found in the wild and are found only here. In total, there are about 3,000 individuals in Loro Park. Children will be delighted to watch the parrot show, where colorful birds fly freely and perform various tricks, and they will also be able to see how the chicks grow, how they are spoon-fed with nectar and other miracles of ornithology. In total, several thousand chicks a year hatch in Loro Park, which then move to the wild nature of South America and Australia, to their natural habitats. Thus, Loro Parque plays an important role in the repopulation of rare birds.

The collection of marine life is, of course, huge. In addition to the local representatives of the marine fauna living off the coast of Tenerife, in the aquarium you can see a huge variety of tropical fish, sharks, killer whales and dolphins, various corals and marine plants of stunning beauty. Your children will remember for the rest of their lives the passage through the glass tunnel that runs under the aquarium. It is as if you are in a sea kingdom, a world hidden from view, where spotted sharks and majestic stingrays will swim overhead. And in 2014, a new Aqua Viva pavilion was opened in the park: an aquarium with jellyfish and a laboratory for their breeding.

Loro Parque is home to alligators and iguanas, tigers and jaguars, gorillas and chimpanzees – many animals and reptiles from all over the world. And the most pleasant and interesting thing in Loro Park is the daily animal and bird shows, organized in such a way that you can see everything possible in one day (the show is included in the ticket price).

Killer whales in Loro Parque

We advise you to pay special attention to the killer whale show, because not every zoo can afford it. These predators arrived here from the USA only 10 years ago. The arena and the pool, corresponding to their size, has a diameter of 120 meters and holds 22 million liters of sea water! Killer whales are capricious and do not want to perform the same tricks over and over again. But this is only to your advantage, because each performance is unique, do not miss it!

Well, if your child is tired of looking at the birds and animals – take him to jump on the Kinderland playground. In the meantime, you need to have time and have lunch! Loro Park guests always have a choice: grill and steak, pizzeria, self-service buffet. The cafe near the playground has a special children’s menu and delicious Canarian baraquito coffee for parents, look for the sign “Bar Bambu”. We strongly advise you to visit the cafe overlooking the volcano, which is called: “Vista Teide”. You can enjoy an excellent view of the symbol of the island, the highest volcano in Europe, by ordering coffee and Spanish snacks, you won’t be able to eat more densely here.

Working hours: from 8:30 to 18:45, without days off and holidays.
