Where to Stay in Tenerife
Tenerife is full of all kinds of amazing neighborhoods, each of which offers its own unique personality and attractions. Costa Adeje is a great choice if you want to surround yourself with beautiful beaches, a fantastic range of restaurants, high-end shopping malls, and some of the most luxurious places to stay in Tenerife. This well-rounded neighborhood is equally perfect for honeymooning couples and families with kids.
Puerto de La Cruz in the north of Tenerife is an excellent choice if you want a more laid-back vacation with a local vibe. Here you’ll find quaint plazas surrounded by bars and cafes, gorgeous botanical gardens, winding streets to get lost in, and remote beaches. It’s also home to the iconic Loro Parque and hosts a huge number of cultural events throughout the year.
El Medano is another top pick for a chilled-out vacation away from the hustle and bustle of major tourist resorts. This bohemian neighborhood is known for its excellent water sports, cool surfer bars, volcanic sand beaches, and quirky shops full of handmade gifts.
If you’re not interested in water sports, Playa Paraiso is also a great place to visit. This once sleepy residential area was brought to life after some of the best hotels in Tenerife set up shop in the area.
With peaceful beaches and pretty coastal walks, this neighborhood invites you to relax and forget about your routine back home! It’s also just a short drive or bus ride away from the lively Costa Adeje.

Bahia Principe Fantasia Tenerife offers a huge range of accommodation options, with something to suit every style and budget. To make your trip one you’ll never forget, reserve one of the Castle Suites. Best 5-star hotels in Tenerife
Five-star doesn’t have to imply imposing facades and legions of starched-collar staff. When it comes to accommodation, both shiny-shoed finesse and barefoot seclusion sit in Tenerife’s lap of luxury. You can chill in sub-tropical gardens within the hills of the lush north, be spa-struck by the award-winning wellness facilities in Puerto de la Cruz, and loiter round private pools in the upper echelons of Costa Adeje hostelries in the sunny south. Here’s our pick of the best five-star hotels in Tenerife, from huge resorts to opulent boutique establishments in areas including Costa Adeje and Puerto de la Cruz.
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama
Tenerife, Spain
8
Telegraph expert rating
This pink palace is distinctive for miles thanks to its Moorish style and the nearby Championship golf course. Facilities are extensive and there’s plenty to do, with extensive spa and fitness facilities, seven pools, a beach, and two Michelin-starred restaurants. The south of Tenerife has a drier landscape and is more touristy than the north, but this is a peaceful spot far from any crowds – with swathes of lush gardens and plenty of tropical foliage around to admire. There are three categories of room but the standard rooms (Deluxe) are the largest in Tenerife and feel really spacious and comfortable, with very private balconies and big marble bathrooms.

Bahía Del Duque
Costa Adeje, Tenerife, Spain

Telegraph expert rating
Modelled like a 19th-century Spanish colonial village, this is one of the top five-star resorts in Tenerife and said to represent an architectural landmark within Spanish territory. This nod to national pride is reflected in the room décor and several of the restaurant menus. For the active-minded there are tennis courts, five outdoor pools, a 24-hour gym, and organised activities aplenty, while junior guests have a kids’ club, splash areas, and plenty of sandy stuff on the doorstep. Not all of the amenities involve expending energy though.
There’s a full-service spa, a star-gazing observatory, and scenic paths through beautiful mature gardens. Service is top-notch.

Royal Garden Villas & Spa

One of the loveliest five-star hotels in Costa Adeje. Unless you were born into palatial surroundings, you can’t fail to be impressed by the level of luxury in the Royal Garden’s villas, each with private pools and scenic views. As it should be in these opulent cocoons of serenity, you’re very much left to your own devices by the staff apart from chocolate deliveries at nightly turndowns, and efficient, friendly interactions in the restaurant. In addition to the private swimming areas, a communal infinity pool flows in front of the palm-shaded reception area and laps at a beach shack-style bar. There’s also a sultry spa, plus a gym and a squash court for those unable to succumb to complete inertia.

Aptly located opposite the delightful Botanical Gardens, this refuge of gentility is set in a residential area one mile above a black sand beach on the Puerto de la Cruz coastline. There’s a definite feel of Monte Carlo in-it’s-heyday: fat cigars are still smoked around the pool, black swans swim in a beautiful, tree-shaded garden pond, an exotic spa has a touch of the James Bond, and deep carpets line both hallways and bedrooms. Amid the western finery, you’ll find exotic hints of the owners’ close relationship with the Thai royal family lining the corridors and marbled lobby. The service is charmingly old-fashioned too, starring white-coated waiters and sharp-suited reception staff.

Facing the greenery of the García Sanabria city park on the north-eastern edge of Santa Cruz, this is a much more cosmopolitan hotel. But that doesn’t mean to say the usual holiday needs can’t be satisfied; palm-studded Las Teresitas beach is just a five-mile ride by complimentary shuttle, and the superbly photogenic Adán Martín Auditorium is two miles away on the oceanfront. The stiff, formal façade and polished marble lobby of the Grand Hotel Mencey hide a softer heart of garden lawns, trickling stone fountains, and quaint wooden balconies. Exceptional dining adds the proverbial cherry on top, and there’s an outdoor pool, gym, spa, casino and paddle courts.

The Luxury Side Of Tenerife
When many people in Europe think of Tenerife, they think of the mass market resorts full of package holidays tourists. Irish bars, full English breakfasts, and restaurants with picture menus also spring to mind rather than fine dining.
However, there is a far more luxurious side to Tenerife, which many people are unaware of. For example, the island has five Michelin-star restaurants and many internationally recognized five-star hotels. Outside the water parks and beaches, there is also a completely different side of Tenerife to explore.
The view in Masca, Tenerife, Spain
getty
The “forgotten” village of Masca is regarded as Tenerife’s most beautiful village set in the Teno Mountains on the western side of the island. It is considered to be the forgotten village primarily due to its inaccessibility. Before 1991 there was no road to the village. Today’s road to the village is not for the faint-hearted, with multiple twists and turns, but the drive is well worth it. On arrival, you can enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery with lush vegetation surrounding the village. Several bars and restaurants have now opened in the village for visitors so you can stop and enjoy a drink while you take in the views or linger over lunch.

No visit to Tenerife would be complete without visiting Mount Teide, which towers over the island. Teide is an inactive volcano that last erupted in 1909 and is the highest point in Spain. If you don’t fancy hiking up, a cable car can take you to the top at 3,718m. From there, it is only an hour’s walk to the summit, where you can see panoramic views over Tenerife’s neighboring islands—La Gomera, El Hierro, La Palma, and Gran Canaria on a clear day. The summit also is an excellent place for some star gazing if you go up at sunset. It’s possible to see 83 out of the 88 officially recognized constellations in the right conditions.

Another scenic viewpoint is the cliffs of Gigantes in the Teno Rural Park, in Santiago del Teide, west of Tenerife. The best place to view the cliffs is from Mirador Archipenque, located further from the coast. You can even see La Gomera from this viewpoint on a clear day. Along the coast of Gigantes, you can see the cliffs from the water on a kayak or take a whale and dolphin spotting cruise.

If you want to get away from it all with a more traditional style, the Hotel Botanico and Oriental Spa Garden may be the best option. This luxury hotel is set in extensive subtropical gardens near Puerto de la Cruz on the north of the island, well away from the tourist masses. The hotel’s Oriental Spa Garden has received numerous awards as the best hotel spa in Europe and the Mediterranean and offers wellness and weight loss programs.

In 2021 the hotel underwent an extensive refurbishment to bring it up to current standards. If you want complete relaxation, everything you need is onsite with various restaurants from Asian to steak and even a healthy eating restaurant. In addition, there’s everything you could need to improve your general well-being with Yoga, Tai Chi, Chi Kung, Pilates, Meditation and an Aqua Gym, and a state-of-the-art gym.
Royal Hideaway Corales Suites pool
Royal Hideaway Corales
If you would rather be somewhere more lively, the Royal Hideaway Corales is situated in the charming La Caleta fishing village. You can stroll to local shops and some of the best seafood restaurants on the island from the hotel.
While many hotels in Tenerife look traditionally Canarian, the Neo-futuristic style architecture of this hotel could have come straight from the futuristic designs of the 1950s, such as buildings seen in Palm Springs in the US. When viewed from the sea-facing side, the hotel resembles a ship, and its interiors are based on the island’s corals. Royal Hideaway Corales even won recognition in the World Luxury Hotel Awards in the Luxury Architecture Design Hotel category in 2020 for its design.

The hotel is divided into two distinctive parts with their own style. The Corales Beach hotel is for adults only and features the one Michelin star restaurant El Rincon de Juan Carlos, which also has three Repsol suns and is led by the Padrón Brothers. The restaurant has stunning views over the sea and offers a Mediterranean-inspired set tasting menu with the option of wine pairings. There is also a beautiful spa with an outdoor hydrotherapy pool amidst lush planting.

Royal Hideaway Corales Suites
The Royal Hideaway Corales Suites is for families, although you can stay on this side as a couple since they feature several room options with a private pool. Rooms on this side are more extensive and feature a kitchen. If you don’t fancy one of the hotel’s many restaurants, a chef can come to your room to prepare dinner.
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama
Finally, one of the best-known luxury hotels on the island with its iconic Moorish architecture is the Ritz-Carlton, Abama which is situated on a large resort with a golf course and residences about 25 minutes from Tenerife South Airport. While still being close enough to the main towns to venture out, the hotel has more than enough on the resort for most of their guests to simply relax at the hotel. The hotel rooms offer views of the gardens, nearby banana plantations, and the volcanic seascape. Next year the hotel will undergo a renovation, even though the hotel is still in excellent condition.
Galician Beef Fillet with Spherical Truffled Gnocchis and cheese foam
Turning Left for Less
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama is the perfect break for a foodie with two Michelin star restaurants. Abama Kabuki has one star and presents dining as a form of theater with a fusion of Japanese and Western culinary techniques. MB has two Michelin stars and offers twists on Mediterranean cuisine with a choice of a classic menu or a more modern tasting menu. Dishes such as Galician Beef Fillet with Spherical Truffled Gnocchis and cheese foam showcase attention to detail with classic flavor pairings in a contemporary format.
The Ritz-Carlton, Abama pool

You can relax at one of the swimming pools or venture to the beach, which has full service for guests with umbrellas and sunbeds. The spa also takes inspiration from Roman bathing, with its water-based treatments and experiences designed to stimulate the body’s metabolism. If you feel more energetic, there are jogging and hiking trails through the botanical gardens, plus the hotel is close to a leading tennis academy and 18-hole championship golf course.

Once you have decided on your hotel, how do you get the best price? It can sometimes work out cheaper to book the hotel and flight together. For example, British Airways Holidays feature all three hotels and can be booked with business class Club Europe seats. As well as often being cheaper, British Airways offer extra Avios on Holidays booking and are currently offering double tier points depending on the dates booked. British Airways restarts flights from Gatwick to Tenerife South from 29 March 2022.
Another option is to book through a specialist luxury agent such as those that offer Select or Marriott STARS benefits These can give extra such as upgrades or complimentary breakfast for the same price as a flexible rate with the hotel.
Finally, you could also look at joining the hotel’s own loyalty program, such as The Leaders Club for the Leading Hotels of the World. With these, you can often get exclusive discounts and extras.
14 best hotels in Tenerife
When it comes to places to stay, Tenerife not only offers variety, but quality too. The island is less Jack of all trades than Renaissance Man, meeting the needs of a host of different holidaymakers with equal panache. The large, south coast resorts hit the mark for both families and couples – here you’ll find big, beachfront properties catering to both markets, and running the gamut from economical to extravagant. Head to the wilder north coast and the rural interior and you can choose between characterful boutique hotels, secluded luxury resorts and sleepy, family-run fincas. Wherever you stay, Tinerfeños are veterans when it comes to hospitality, and your welcome will be as warm as the year-round sunshine.

1. Bahia del Duque, Costa Adeje
Tenerife’s original grande dame hotel bagged a prime location, its 15-acre grounds stretching down to the sugary sands of Playa del Duque. Pastel-coloured Spanish colonial-style buildings and four freeform pools sit in lush gardens of jacaranda and dragon trees. Rooms and suites in soft marine colours are available in both the main hotel and Casas Ducales, an exclusive area closer to the beach with butler service and extra perks. Tucked behind the hotel are villas with private pools. Of the dizzying roster of 21 restaurants and bars, the standout is the Michelin-starred, Latin-European fusion Nub, although children may prefer La Heladería’s giant sundaes. Facilities are just as extensive; clubs for kids and teenagers, tennis, a pitch-and-putt golf course, one of the biggest spas on the island, and even a star-gazing observatory.

Barceló Tenerife
2. Barceló Tenerife, Golf del Sur
Families with older kids will find plenty to keep them occupied at this good-value hotel sandwiched between golf courses and a fishing village on the south coast. There are eight outdoor pools, a lake where you can kayak, a climbing wall and even a small in-house nature reserve and museum. Here, a guided hike through rocky canyons and an interactive exhibition retell the geological and ethnographic history of the island. There’s no beach to speak of, but a complimentary shuttle runs into Playa de las Americas.

Meliá Hacienda del Conde
3. Meliá Hacienda del Conde, Buenavista del Norte
This adults-only hotel in the quiet northwest of Tenerife has all the benefits of a rural location but isn’t the slightest bit rustic. The setting is spectacular, with the peaks of the Teno mountains to one side and the greens of a Seve Ballesteros-designed clifftop golf course to the other. With smart, contemporary rooms, an excellent spa, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean and an atmospheric bar in a converted church, this hideaway has sophistication in spades. For those who come for the area’s excellent mountain biking trails, there’s bike rental and a repair shop on site.

Hovima La Pinta
4. Hovima La Pinta Beachfront Family Hotel, Costa Adeje
The clue is in the name — this bright and cheerful, family-friendly hotel fronts straight on to a golden, sandy beach encircled by a breakwater. Kids can hop easily between the pool and splash park, the beach, the small children’s playground and the apartments, which come with kitchen areas and up to three bedrooms. The kids’ club runs from six months to 12 years, and both on-site restaurants have high chairs and children’s menus. The lobby features a giant “virtual aquarium” with touchscreen displays so guests can learn about Tenerife’s marine life.

Hotel San Roque
5. Hotel San Roque, Garachico
With just 20 rooms and set in the lush, lava-encrusted landscape of the north coast, this adults-only boutique is the antithesis of the south’s huge resort hotels. A converted 18th-century manor house in the island’s prettiest village, its interiors are sophisticated and very grown up, with Bauhaus furniture and modern art complementing the building’s beautifully restored bones. It’s no museum, however, but a welcoming, tactile environment with plenty of corners to curl up in with a book. There’s also a rooftop sundeck and a heated courtyard swimming pool, around which the restaurant tables are set, serving snacks all day and a menu of refined Canarian favourites in the evening.

The Ritz-Carlton Abama
6. Ritz-Carlton Abama, Guía de Isora
This palatial, pink, Moorish-style property sits in its own luxurious, 400-acre enclave high on the west coast cliffs with views over La Gomera. The location is a little isolated, but guests tend to come here looking for a hotel-based holiday, shuttling between the excellent 18-hole championship golf course, the giant tennis academy, the ancient Rome-inspired spa or one of the seven outdoor pools. Rather thrillingly, its sandy beach is reached by a funicular railway running down the cliffs. A property of superlatives, it also has the biggest Ritz Kids Club in Europe and two Michelin-starred restaurants.

Iberostar Grand El Mirador
7. Iberostar Grand El Mirador, Costa Adeje
For something with the same gorgeous setting as Bahia del Duque but on a more intimate scale, this adult-only all-suite hotel hits the spot. The architecture is extravagant — all arches, columns and fountains — and the suites, many with sea views, have four-poster beds. The expansive, two-tiered, heated pool is the heart of the hotel, next to the beach and overlooked by the cocktail bar and the more atmospheric of the two à la carte restaurants. There’s a small gym, but a far bigger spa; guests really just come here to relax.

La Casona del Patio
8. La Casona del Patio, Santiago del Teide
Among wildflower meadows on the edge of a sleepy village in the northwestern mountains, this 20-room rural hotel with unexpectedly sleek rooms caters to an active clientele. It has its own stables and programme of riding excursions, offers bike hire and storage, and is perfectly placed for hiking routes through the Masca Gorge, the Teno Mountains and the Chinyero Nature Reserve. There’s a sauna and hot tub to soak away the day’s exertions, a lounge with a log fire for evening drinks, and a restaurant serving a set menu at dinner. For variety, there are a few other dining options in the village.

Hotel Botánico’s Oriental Spa Garden
9. Hotel Botánico, Puerto de la Cruz
There’s an aura of the Orient at this established property sitting opposite Tenerife’s Jardín Botánico. The hotel’s palm-filled private garden features fountains, a Japanese-style bridge and a freshwater pond that’s home to koi carp and black swans. The gigantic Asian-styled spa has outdoor hydrotherapy pools, a Jacuzzi in a sunken grotto, and a host of treatments hailing from Thailand to Tahiti. Rooms are plush, if a little old-fashioned. The hotel tends to attract older couples, but for families there’s a children’s pool, kids’ club and a special wildlife adventure programme in the school holidays, run in partnership with nearby Loro Parque. The beach is a shuttle bus ride away.

Royal Hideaway Corales Beach
10. Royal Hideaway Corales Beach, La Caleta
In the quiet seaside town of La Caleta, just north of Costa Adeje, this adults-only all-suite hotel has curvaceous, nautical lines, as if a large, white yacht had moored on shore. The spacious suites are designed with couples in mind, with open bathrooms and large terraces with ocean views, many with hot tubs. The look is contemporary rather than Canarian, although the Michelin-starred Maresía restaurant, which sits next to the ever-so-chic rooftop pool, has the local Padrón brothers at the helm. There are two other restaurants, one serving Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, and a 24-hour gym and programme of fitness classes, presumably so you can work off the calories.

You can get a Fender guitar or a record player and a selection of vinyl delivered to the rooms, all of which have a touch of bling. There are pool parties and live music at the beach bar, plus a low-lit spa to recover in. Not just for adults, with a children’s pool and kids’ clubs from six months to 16 years, this rock’n’roll choice is family-friendly too.

Colón Guanahaní
12. Colón Guanahaní, Costa Adeje
In the heart of Costa Adeje, this mid-size adults-only hotel offers a tranquil oasis that’s still deceptively close to all the shops, restaurants and excitement of the busy resort — the beach is also a short walk away. Life moves slowly here, with guests — who tend to the more mature end of the spectrum — basking around the two palm-shaded, heated saltwater pools or on the rooftop sundeck, where there’s also a hot tub. Upgrade to a pool view room to avoid any street noise at night.

La Laguna Gran Hotel
13. La Laguna Gran Hotel, San Cristobal de La Laguna
Those more interested in sightseeing than sunbathing will adore this charming heritage boutique located among the narrow, cobbled streets of Tenerife’s former capital, a Unesco world heritage site. Rooms are handsome and spacious for a city hotel, and breakfast can be served in the restaurant or on the sunny terrace. Guests are spoilt for choice when it comes to locations for drinks — tucked into a velvet chair or Chesterfield sofa in the lofty bar, or with views over the Anaga mountains by the rooftop pool. A tram runs into the capital, Santa Cruz, taking just 15 minutes.

There are kids’ clubs too, so parents can enjoy the grown-up delights, including a suspended glass pool that projects over the edge of the roof, and yoga and Pilates in a Japanese garden. Best hotels in Tenerife: Five star hotels and fun kids club resorts
Tenerife gets a bad rap, although take a look at her and she doesn’t seem to care one jot.
Three million years ago this volcanic island erupted out of the Atlantic swell and today she still stands proudly, her pinnacle the cone-shaped, still steaming Mount Teide – Spain’s highest mountain, no less.
Teide smoulders high above plunging barrancos, towering cliffs and sandy beaches. Cast aside your preconceptions and discover hotels offering everything from Michelin-starred cuisine to sublime spas. And not a full English fry-up or disco bar in sight.
