Puerto Calero is a marina located on the island of Lanzarote, world famous for being one of the most prestigious destinations in the world of sailing. It was built in 1986 and became the first marina on the island.
Puerto Calero is an ideal destination to rest with a very familiar and close atmosphere that stands out for its security, modernity and exclusivity. Its location of volcanic origin makes it an idyllic place to spend a special day or an unforgettable stay.
The marina has 438 moorings for boats from 8 metres to 80 metres in length. It has a minimum draught of 7 metres, making it accessible at all tides. Each of the moorings has a water point and electricity connection as well as Wifi access.

Where is Puerto Calero located?

Puerto Calero is located on the south west coast of Lanzarote. Its location serves as a natural shelter for the harbour. As it is situated to the southwest, it is protected from the winds coming from the northeast. On the other hand, the mountains known as Punta Gorda and the proximity of the islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos protect it from winds and waves from the south-west.

What to see in Puerto Calero?

Puerto Calero is a residential complex and marina perfect for all those who love water sports, but that is not the only thing it has to offer its visitors.

Its main attraction is its Marina. This port offers shelter to small boats and yachts, as well as being the headquarters of numerous companies offering water activities and maritime routes. At the end of the main breakwater of the harbour there is a charming lighthouse, no more than three storeys high, attractive to visitors with its mix of red and black colours.

In the marina itself is the most commercial area of the municipality. A string of shops escort the inner part of the marina, with some first class firms. Meanwhile, in the exterior sector, and with views of the boats themselves, all the restaurants are located, with a wide gastronomic offer perfect for all tastes

But Puerto Calero is not all about water. From the village itself there are also several routes that can be done on foot or by bicycle. One of them is the one that links Puerto Calero with Puerto del Carmen along the coast. To the south there is another trail that connects with Playa Quemada. Both routes are perfect for the whole family.

For those looking for a deeper connection with nature, you will have to go a little further away from the municipality. The volcanic craters of Caldera Riscada and Montaña Tinasoria are just over ten minutes drive inland. Following the coast to the south we come across Los Ajaches, a natural monument formed by volcanic eruptions and which has given rise to small, hidden coves such as La Fuentecita or La Casa.

An oasis of peace and tranquility, this is the opinion of tourists choosing tours to Spain in Lanzarote in Puerto Calero. The natural beauty of the seascapes blends with the volcanic scenery, all perfectly complemented by modern tourist facilities. Puerto Calero is located just 10 kilometers from Arrecife airport and 20 kilometers from the capital of the island, occupying a small area on the southwest coast of Lanzarote.

The construction of the port, the first of its kind in Lanzarote, was undertaken by José Calero in 1986, and about 15 years later, Puerto Calero has managed to become one of the most modern and exclusive ports in all of Spain. Around the same period, luxurious resort villas were erected.

In 1989, the first sea vessels moored at the port of Puerto Calero. In 1997, a decision was made to double the capacity of the harbor and in just two years the port expanded to 420 berths for boats from 8 to 75 meters.

Lanzarote Canary Islands: resort Puerto Del Carmen

Aviamania will tell and show EVERYTHING about the island of Lanzarote!!! The topic of the article is Lanzarote Canary Islands: the resort of Puerto Del Carmen!

Few people in our country even know about the existence of the Martian landscapes of the island of Lanzarote. But it is not so far from the well-known island of Tenerife … To broaden your horizons and replenish your knowledge base, I suggest reading my article Canary Islands on the world map , in which I will talk about all the existing islands and even about the island around whose existence they go legends…

Let’s return to our topic — Lanzarote Canary Islands.

Lanzarote on map

This is the most famous resort of my favorite island in the Canary archipelago. Such popularity is due to the fact that the resort has a central location relative to the main attractions and it is located in a fairly large settlement by the standards of Lanzarote.

In my article today I want to talk about places that are definitely worth a visit if you are staying in Puerto Del Carmen.

Puerto Del Carmen on the map

Let me start by saying that I was lucky not only to live in the resort at one time, but also to live almost in the best place on the island – Villa Alondra.

Villa Alondra

The complex of villas and bungalows 5 * is located 10 minutes walk from the noisy life of the resort. Everything is here!!! This is not an advertisement, I sincerely enjoyed staying at the villa. If you want to know more, then go to my article and see the price information on the official website of the hotel:

https://alondravillas.com/
But! In 2017, I decided to stay somewhere else.

If you haven’t subscribed to my YouTube channel Aviamania , then do it as soon as possible, because I am flying to the island to shoot so many videos that in one of them I will certainly tell and show the new location and explain the reasons for choosing!

Have you ever watched a movie in the Canary Islands, lounging on a comfortable sofa with a cocktail in your hand?! Oh, well, it’s unlikely, but like me) Although I have a great desire to correct this situation, and if I visit this super place, then you, my dear viewers of the YouTube channel Aviamania, will be the first to know about it!

There is a rooftop cinema in Biosfera shopping plaza. Every night at sunset, films in English are shown here. 20 minutes after the end of the film, the next one begins.

The repertoire is posted on the site for the current month. Places can be booked in advance. There is also a cafe on the roof where they sell drinks and food. They let you into the auditorium an hour before the start of the film, and it is better to come not before the screening in order to take good seats. If you buy a VIP ticket, then you reserve the seats at the time of purchase.

Lanzarote – the Canary Island of Volcanoes in Bright Photos

Contents

Island of Volcanoes

The fourth largest island of the Canary archipelago Lanzarote is called the “island of volcanoes” . It is complex, like a bizarre mosaic, of unique multi-tiered caves, beaches, plantations of vineyards, cacti and, of course, the sun. Scientists suggest that the age of the island is approximately 15 million years. This is the easternmost island of the Canarian archipelago, located about 125 km from the coast of Africa and 1000 km from the Iberian Peninsula.

The island got its name from the name of the Genoese merchant Lancelotto Malocello, who arrived on the island in the 14th century. The coastline of the island stretches for 213 km, of which 10 km are covered with sand, and the rest is a rocky coast. The beach is located at 16.5 km. Extravagant mountain ranges were formed after numerous eruptions and lava flows that spread along the slopes, giving them bizarre shapes.

The demon is the emblem of the island . This is explained by the fact that the first inhabitants of the island perceived the volcanic eruptions as the work of the devil. The largest recorded eruptions occurred between 1730 and 1736.

During 2.053 days of eruptions, lava covered ¼ of the surface of the entire island, including the most fertile soil, and buried 11 villages under it. The island was actually deprived of forest cover and only succulents and lichens managed to take root in Lanzarote. The drought that affected the island in 1768 and the lack of rain during the winter led to the emigration of the population to America and Cuba.

The next volcanic eruption occurred in 1824, but in terms of its strength it was less destructive than the main one. But it also led to the exodus of the indigenous population. Today, the island has about 140,000 inhabitants, 73.9% of which are Spaniards.

Detailed guide to the Canary Island of Eternal Spring – Tenerife we have prepared here.

The flight to the Canary Islands is quite long and not all parents want to tire their kids. A good alternative is a vacation on mainland Spain. Where it is better to relax in Spain with children tells our review.

The capital of the island Arrecife owes its name to the mountain reef , which is why Aressife is translated from Spanish as “reef”. The streets of the city reflect the unique maritime character and literally breathe history.

The first mention of Arrecife dates back to the 15th century, when this city was still a small fishing village. Black volcanic reefs, behind which boats hid, protected fishermen from sudden pirate attacks. In the XVI century. the settlement began to grow actively, and the first church dedicated to the first bishop of San Gines was erected on its territory.

The city became the capital in 1852, and such major industries as tourism and agriculture are actively developing on its territory.

Arrecife is home to the city beach of Reducto, a castle of San José built in the 17th century. and which today houses a collection of modern art, as well as the castle of San Gabriel.

The tallest building on the entire island, the Gran Hotel Arrecife is located in the town next to the harbour. The city has several malls and the main street of the shopping district.

Of course, not the capital of the island is attractive for tourists, but resort centers :

  • Costa Teguise;
  • Puerto del Carmen, in the suburbs of which the resort village of Puerto Calero is located;
  • New tourist center in the south – Playa Blanca.

PUERTO DEL CARMEN

The tourist center is located on the southeast coast of the island and stretches along the ocean for 7 km.

You can get to Puerto del Carmen from the airport by bus . Arrecife Bus provides regular transport links.
The ticket price is negligible – about 1.50€.

You can also use the services of the competing company Bono Bus, with which the journey to the oldest resort will cost 1. 20€.

By purchasing Bono Bus magnetic cards you will be able to save 20% on trips.

Taxi service for visitors. The fare depends on the time of day . So from 6:00 to 22:00 you can get to Puerto del Carmen for approximately 15 €, from 22:00 to 6:00 – for 18 €.

What used to be a small resort village in just 20 years has turned into a resort town that welcomes over 30,000 tourists annually. A significant part of the city is occupied by natural spacious sandy beaches.

Puerto del Carmen beaches

Playa Grande or Playa Blanca

Ideal for families with children. Its length is 900m, maximum width – 100m. On the beach there is a rental of umbrellas and sun loungers, a shower and a wide range of water activities.

Playa de los Pocillos

The golden sandy beach is just above sea level, so the tides leave small “lakes”. Previously, sea salt was mined here by the old method of evaporation in the sun.

This is the longest and widest beach in the resort. Its length is 1.600m, the maximum width is 170m (at low tide it can reach 200m). Because of the winds, it is not so attractive for families with children. On its territory there is a rental of sun loungers and umbrellas, a shower, but there are no water activities here.

Playa Matagorda

The golden sandy beach starts gently from Playa de los Pocillos and ends at the Beatriz Playa hotel. It is also windy, its length is 1.000m, the maximum width is 60m. Umbrellas with sun loungers and showers are provided for vacationers. There are no water activities.

Playa Fariones and Playa Chica

They are not intended for beach lovers, as the entrance to the water is blocked by stones. But is a favorite spot for divers . There is a dive center that teaches mainly beginner divers. The beach is 140m long and 25m wide. On the beach, covered with light sand and stones, there are no sun loungers with umbrellas and water activities, but the shower works properly.

Attractions, entertainment and shopping in Puerto del Carmen

The resort area has many restaurants, including fish restaurants, offering exquisite Canarian cuisine, bars that entertain visitors every evening with simple show programs, discos and casinos. The port offers an exciting boat trip or fishing in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Around the harbor is the “Old Town”, which has retained the atmosphere of a fishing village.

In the evening, tourists stroll along Avenida de las Playas, the resort’s main thoroughfare. There are many small shops offering mainly beach assortment and souvenirs.

But the resort town also has more significant stores, as well as branded boutiques Diesel, Lacoste, etc. The largest new shopping center on the entire island, Biosfera Plaza, is located in Puerto del Carmen.

In the evening you can visit the Music Hall Tavern – an eccentric cabaret with a vulgar but funny program . The bulk of visitors are tourists from foggy Albion.

In the second half of May, international triathlon competitions are held annually in Puerto del Carmen. Marching athletes arriving on the island to compete in cross-country, cycling and swimming are solemnly greeted by numerous spectators on Avenida de las Playas. An important sporting event is covered in all local media.

At the end of July, the Fiesta de Carmen is celebrated on a large scale – a holiday honoring the heavenly patroness of the city. The city is festively decorated with garlands, colorful banners, flags and balloons.

The fun lasts until the morning, introducing numerous tourists to traditional folklore performances, dances and other entertainment. For this holiday, fishing boats are festively decorated so that at the climax they go to the ocean in a long line. Residents of the city at the end of the holiday pray for good catches next year.

Hotels Puerto del Carmen

There are few hotels on the vast territory of the resort. Mostly apartments are offered, of which there are over 200.

Among the 4-star hotels noteworthy:

  • Seaside Los Jameos Playa;
  • Las Costas;
  • ClubHotel Riu Paraiso Lanzarote.

Among the 3 stars you can stay at:

  • Apartamentos Barcarola Club;
  • Costa Sal Apartments;
  • La Penita Apartments and others

2-star hotels are also ready to offer neat rooms and good service:

  • HG Guacimeta;
  • Jable Bermudas Apartments;
  • Plaza Azul and many more.

COSTA TEGUISE

The second most important tourist center is located in the east of the island.

From Lanzarote Airport you can reach the resort in just 15 minutes by using the bus (ticket price 1.15€, travel by Bono Bus will cost 0.92€) or taxi (from 6.00 to 22.00 – 20€, from 22.00 until 6.00 – 24€).

The resort has no history of turning a fishing village into a beautiful city. It was created artificially on an uninhabited stretch of coast about 40 years ago. The coast is always windy, so Costa Teguise has become a favorite destination for windsurfers and kiters.

Beaches of Costa Teguise

There are 5 beaches in Costa Teguise:

Las Cucharas

In Spanish, the name translates as “spoons”. The length of the beach, covered with fine light sand, is 700m, the width is 60m. On the beach, guests can rent umbrellas and sun loungers, showers.

There are no water activities, so for the impressions of walking on the ocean and catching exotic fish, you will have to go to the nearby Puerto del Carmen or its suburb – Puerto Calero. The beach was chosen by windsurfers, as a moderate wind does not stop blowing even for a minute.

But near the Melia Salinas, the wind is calmer, so the waves are calmer, and beach lovers are already basking in the sun on a wider beach.

Playa de los Charcos

Windy beach with fine light sand. Entry into the waters of the ocean is hampered by stones. But the beach, with a length of 310m and a width of 30m, is protected from the waves. There are water activities, umbrellas with sun loungers and showers.

El Jabillo

The rocky beach is 180m long and 20m wide. The waves are low here. Near the beach is the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel. There is no entertainment and soul, only the rental of sun loungers and umbrellas works.

Playa Bastian

It differs from the rest in darker sand. There are few vacationers here, since entry into the ocean is difficult due to the rocky descent. The length of the western beach is 300m, its maximum width is 35m.

Playa Ancla

Small nice and cozy beach with a length of 120m and a width of 30m, visited mainly by guests of nearby hotels. There are no water activities, a shower, and even rental of umbrellas with sun loungers. Nearby is the residence of the King of Spain.

Attractions and entertainment Costa Teguise

The center of Costa Teguise is centered around Pueblo Marinero, an ornamental fishing village designed by Cesar Manrique. Also, according to the project of Manrique, ordered by King Hussein of Jordan, one of the four residences of the King of Spain, La Mareta, was built. She was presented by Hussein to the Spanish king Juan Carlos as a wedding present.

La Mareta is a rather modest building with a helipad on its territory. The residence is carefully guarded, and curious tourists are not allowed to enter here.

In Costa Teguise there are numerous bars and restaurants , and once a week on Fridays there is a market selling clothes, cheap jewelry and souvenirs. Those who wish can go with specially organized flights from Costa Teguise to a huge market in the city of Teguise, which takes place on Sundays.

In the market you can buy original handmade souvenirs by craftsmen. After shopping in the administrative capital of the coast, you can stroll around the city – the old capital of the island with a long history.

The settlement was named Teguise after the daughter of the last native king who lived in the 15th century. One of the streets of the city is called “Bloody” in memory of the events when most of the inhabitants were brutally killed in one of the numerous raids of pirates.

Also, the fortress on Mount Castillo de Santa Barbara is named after its owner, who was canonized for the fact that she was martyred without giving the pirates the place of refuge of her servants. She is the patroness of the city, and Spanish Catholics always commemorate her day in churches.

Among the objects of interest is Spinoza’s palace, which was originally the residence of the governor-general, and then passed to later owners – merchants from Genoa.

The palace is now a museum and its richly decorated interior impresses visitors. It is also worth visiting one of the oldest churches in the Canary Islands, the Nuestra Señora de Guadelupe church, and then strolling along the stone-paved streets with numerous sights.

The most popular resort in Tenerife is Playa de las Americas . We talk about the history of the resort, hotels, beaches, shopping and entertainment in this article.

But even in the resort of Costa Teguise there is still a lot of entertainment. This and is an excellent golf course for fans of golf , which has become the first on the entire island of Lanzarote.

This and the aquarium, which attracts visitors with a glass shark tunnel and 33 separate tanks, the last of which is an almost instructive visual picture of how human waste pollutes the ocean. Filled with a variety of garbage, it makes people think about a more careful attitude to nature.

In the largest 400,000 liter aquarium you can scuba dive on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00 to 14:00, swim with a 2-meter cat shark and other inhabitants of the ocean.

Experienced instructors provide detailed instructions, and the dive itself takes 20 minutes. Pleasure is not cheap – approximately 130 €.

Those who did not find enough water activities in Costa Teguise can go to Aquapark Costa Teguise .

It provides entertainment for visitors of all ages, but especially the organizers focused on entertainment for children.

So, in Zona Infantil – “Children’s Zone” you can frolic on a huge inflatable “Castle of Games” (Castillo de Juegos) and have fun sliding down colorful slides of various colors and shapes in El lago infantil – “Lake for Children”.

The Children’s Park (Ocio Infantil) is decorated with all sorts of funny caricatures and equipped with innumerable trampolines.

Adults can compete in car races on the 8 sendas (“8 tracks”) attraction, appreciate the steep turns of the Turbolancha diapositiva tubular high-speed tube, and extreme sportsmen can feel the adrenaline rush into the blood after descending the Kamikaze slide.

The water park is open all year round from 10:00 to 18:00, but it is not recommended for children to visit in winter, as the pools are not equipped with water heating systems. Entrance for kids under 2 years old is free, for children under 12 years old a ticket will cost 16 €, for adults – 22.5 €.

Hotels Costa Teguise

On the coast of Costa Teguise there is a worthy choice of hotels of all categories.

Among the 5-stars, mention should be made of Gran Melia Salinas & The Garden Villas – an icon of the cultural heritage of Lanzarote, designed by the architect Fernando Higueras and the famous artist Cesar Manrique, where the minimum cost per night per room will start from 129€. The territory of the exclusive luxury hotel is equipped with sports fields, high fashion boutiques, SPA and much more.

Among the 4 stars you can opt for:

  • Barcelo Lanzarote Resort;
  • Beatriz Costa&Spa;
  • Luabay Lanzarote Beach Family Hotel with many activities;
  • Marinas Club Resort and others.

3 star hotels such as:

  • Barcelo La Galea;
  • El Trebol;
  • Galeon Playa;
  • h20 Lanzarote Gardens, located 200m from the Playa de las Cucharas beach, and many others offer high service at quite attractive prices.

PLAYA BLANCA

The third largest resort center in was once a quiet fishing village.

You can reach the resort, which stretches along the ocean for several kilometers, in 35 minutes by bus (ticket price € 3.15, with Bono Bus company € 2.52) or taxi (estimated cost from 6:00 to 22:00 – 30 €, from 22:00 to 6:00 – 36 €).

You can also rent a car directly at the airport. But we advise you to book a car in advance, so there will be fewer unpleasant surprises upon arrival.

May not be the right model, or will only be on a manual box when you’re used to an automatic. In addition, online booking almost always has good discounts .

There are numerous restaurants and bars in the resort area. There are 2 ports, from one of which you can cross with a car on the Fred Olsen Express high-speed ferry to the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. It will take only 12 minutes, and now you can enjoy the sights and beauties of another Canary island.

Marina Rubicon is the second port of the Playa Blanca resort, which even has its own emblem. The most expensive and luxurious snow-white yachts moor here.

Playa Blanca Beaches

Next to the new elegant and promising resort are Playas de Papagayo – the most beautiful wild beaches of the island . Picturesque landscapes around bays with emerald water, light fine-grained sand attract local residents from all over the island.

Playas de Papagayo is a chain of beaches with such names as Playa del Congrio, Playa del Pozo (closest to Playa Blanca), Playa de Papagayo, Playa de la Cera, etc.

Since they are all located in the national park, if you travel by car, you have to pay 3€.

Playa Blanca is translated from Spanish as “white beach” , which is confirmed by the pleasant, like silk, white sand. There are 3 main beaches within the city limits.

Playa Blanca

Small natural beach with a length of only 100m and a maximum width of 20m, located in the very center of the resort, just a step away from the busy promenade. On its territory there are no sun loungers with umbrellas and water activities, but the shower works properly.

Playa Dorada

Spacious beach, which is 330m long and 35m wide, is located in the eastern part of the resort and is perfectly protected from high waves by breakwaters. Everything is provided for a wonderful beach holiday: sun loungers, umbrellas, showers and numerous water activities.

Playa Flamingo

Located in the western part of the spa center. Length – 225m, width – 40m. Low waves are caused by breakwaters, and the beach has everything you need for a good rest.

In addition to these beaches, there is also Playa Las Coloradas and 3 undeveloped beaches, where sand alternates with stones.

Hotels in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca offers the widest choice of hotels.

Among the 4 stars you can choose:

  • One of the largest hotels in the city – h20 Rubicón Palace;
  • Aparthotel Rubimar Suite;
  • Hesperia Playa Dorada.

There are a lot of 3-star hotels, among them the most popular are:

  • Elba Lanzarote Royal Village Resort;
  • Boutique Hotel h20 White Suites – adults only.

Closest to Playa Blanca than to the other resorts of Lanzarote, in the south is Timanfaya National Park . At the entrance to the park, those who wish can ride on camels. On the territory of the park you can see magnificent creations of nature – many volcanic grottoes and various tectonic structures.

If fate gave you the opportunity to come to rest in Lanzarote, then you should definitely visit the north of the island, where a special microclimate has developed that has turned the zone into the greenest place on the island – the Valley of a Thousand Palm Groves .

Unique fire palms with leaves resembling flames grow in the Grove, as well as beautiful tropical plants. There are two grottoes in the mouth of the volcano, the cave of Los Jameos del Agua and de Los Verdes.

Worked again in Jameo del Agua the great master Cesar Manrique , having built steps into the cave and places for visitors from the remnants of lava. The rest of the interior is adorned with cacti and green ferns, creating a fantastic setting for this place.

Tourists also visit La Geria, where they are given the opportunity to taste sweet wines produced from grapes that grow in fields with solidified lava .
Only in the Canary Islands you can taste real malvasia .

The sun and sandy beaches, the whisper of the Atlantic Ocean and the fresh sea breeze create a unique holiday in Lanzarote and encourage you to return to the island again …

Things to do in Lanzarote | Red Star Surf

NATURE, BEACHES & PARKS

MUSEUMS AND EXTREME SPORTS

Theme museums, art galleries, natural beauties and national parks, beaches and other interesting attractions – find out what to do in Lanzarote and choose what you like!

On days when there are no waves, or if you need to recuperate after intensive surf sessions, you will have a great opportunity to get to know the island better and see in it a masterpiece of nature and art. Below are ideas for things to do in Lanzarote in your off-surf time, whether you prefer museums and galleries, or more of an exploration of natural beauty. In Lanzarote, everyone can find something to their taste.

A visit to the César Manrique Foundation is one of the many things to do in Lanzarote in your spare time. The César Manrique Foundation, located in the artist’s house, where he lived for about 20 years, is located in Taro de Taich. It is an impressive building built directly into the volcanic rock, designed by Manrique himself. This amazing place invites the visitor to get to know the artist’s lifestyle, among lava and fruit trees, and some of Manrique’s paintings exhibited in the author’s former studio.

In the quiet town of Arria there is another house, which also became an example of Manrique’s amazing ability to harmoniously combine nature and architecture. It was in this house that the artist lived until the end of his days in 1992 , surrounded by high-style objects, high-quality materials and an extensive collection of plants.

Lagomar Museum

If you are looking for something to do in Lanzarote, consider a trip to the Lagomar Museum. This is an impressive place, built with volcanic rock and at the same time built into it. Formerly a quarry and today a private property, Lagomar includes natural labyrinths and caves. Lagomar is both a museum and a bar-restaurant and a unique venue for events.

Bahia, Las Coloradas. The Jason deCaires Taylor statues that are part of the museum have a neutral ph for good reason. Thus, the author expressed his concern and call for the preservation of the purity of the oceans.

You can discover Europe’s only underwater museum by scuba diving in this amazingly beautiful place on the south side of Lanzarote.

El Grifo Winery / Wine Museum

The small town of San Bartolome is home to the oldest winery in the Canary Islands and one of the oldest in all of Spain. If you are planning things to do in Lanzarote and you love the wines and traditions associated with winemaking, we recommend visiting La Geria. The Wine Museum, which is a family business, is located in a protected area. This part of the island was once completely covered in lava as a result of volcanic eruptions.

Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk through the vineyards, wine tasting and authentic artifacts from the 19th and 20th centuries, such as grape presses, pumps, grinders, etc.
