If you’re going on holiday to Gran Canaria, you can expect almost guaranteed sunshine and some truly excellent food. While many holidaymakers are content to lap up the good weather and sangria, more discerning travellers might be wondering what’s on offer in terms of sightseeing in Gran Canaria.
I recently spent four days in Las Palmas, the capital city of Gran Canaria. I stayed at an incredible Royal Hideaway hotel called Santa Catalina but made sure to get out and about and experience some of the best things to do in Las Palmas.
Here, I’ve put together the ultimate list of the 40 best things to do in Gran Canaria including the top Las Palmas tourist attractions, best Gran Canaria day trips and other must-sees. I’ve included links to the best tours and excursions in Gran Canaria to make it easier for you to plan your trip.
BOOK AN AIRPORT TRANSFER! Take the hassle out of travel by booking a private airport transfer between Gran Canaria Airport and your accommodation.
WANT TO SQUEEZE ALL OF GRAN CANARIA’S TOP SIGHTS INTO A DAY? Book a full day Gran Canaria highlights tour from Las Palmas to tick off the main attractions.
FIND GREAT DEALS ON GRAN CANARIA HOTELS ON BOOKING.COM HERE.
1. Sip Coffee at Cafe Regina
The best coffee in Las Palmas can be found at Cafe Regina. There’s one on the promenade of Playa de las Canteras, or you can visit the one further inland on Av. José Mesa y López.
In addition to delicious coffee, they also serve an assortment of mouth-watering cakes and other sweet treats. The lemon meringue pie and cinnamon apple crepes are a must!
2. Visit Vegueta cathedral
No day of sightseeing in Las Palmas is complete without a walk around the old town, Vegueta. Do it yourself or book a guided tour for local insight into the area where you’ll find the first church in the Canary Islands, Santa Ana Cathedral, which also houses the Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro (Sacred Art Museum).
I’d recommend spending some time exploring Vegueta’s cobblestone streets and plazas. It was one of our favourite places to visit in Gran Canaria.
More of the cultural attractions in Las Palmas can also be found there – check out Museo Canario museum, Gabinete Literario club, Casas Consistoriales and Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno gallery.
3. Go dolphin and whale watching
Take to the waves in a glass-bottomed boat to get close to the local marine life in the Atlantic. This cruise departs from Puerto Rico harbour and the company will pick you up from your accommodation or a meeting point in Mogan, Taurito, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, San Agustin, or Bahia Feliz. The ticket price includes unlimited soft drinks.
Check prices and availability here.
4. Try snorkelling
Another way to witness the marina life around Gran Canaria is to head out on a boat on an organised trip. This snorkelling tour departs from Puerto de Mogan and includes a tasty tapas lunch, while this one starts at the diving center in Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria.
Alternatively, book a tour that gives you the option of stand up paddling boarding as well as snorkelling. Check prices here.
5. Learn to scuba dive
Whether you’ve always wanted to try it or you’d like to improve your skills, Gran Canaria has lots of options for scuba diving. This experience in Las Canteras is suitable for beginners, as is this one in Maspalomas. There’s even a scuba diving course for kids!
If you’d like to get qualified in the Canary islands, take a look at this two-day padi course.
6. Watch the sunset from a volcano
The island’s volcanic landscape lends itself to the most romantic thing to do in Gran Canaria. The peak of Pico de Las Nieves is a spectacular place to watch the sunset. If you really want to sweep someone off their feet, book a tour that includes a hike followed by local food and wine which you can enjoy as you observe the last rays of the day paint the sky.
You can check prices and availability here.
7. Learn to surf
Did you know that Gran Canaria is a popular destination for surfers? Sieze the opportunity to try surfing at some of the island’s best beaches with a lesson from a pro. If you’re staying in Playa del Inglés, this class is a great option. If your hotel is in Meloneras, try this one.
8. Expand your mind at the science museum
If you’re looking for things to do on a rainy day in Gran Canaria, look no further than the The Elder Museum of Science and Technology, also known as Museo Elder. It’s located in the harbour of Las Palmas and boasts four levels of interactive exhibitions.
This is a great idea for things to do with kids in Gran Canaria but that’s not to say adults won’t enjoy it too! You can get tickets for the museum online in advance here.
9. Taste the tapas
One of the things I loved most about Gran Canaria was the food! Some of our favourite tapas bars were in Vegueta, along the promenade of Playa de las Canteras (El Tipico Espanol’s fried fish was stunning) and near the market at a bar called La Tapatica.
If you want to make sure you’re really sampling the locals’ favourites, book a sunset tapas tour in Las Palmas.
10. Go canyoning
Those looking for adventurous things to do in Gran Canaria will be pleased to learn that the landscape offers plenty of activities for adrenalin junkies. The most popular canyoning tour includes all the safety gear and takes you through waterfalls, forests and natural slides. Check the reviews and book your spot here.
11. Visit a local winery
Did you know that the island makes its own wine? As well as sipping it in restaurants all over Gran Canaria and picking it up as a souvenir at the airport, you can actually visit the scenic hundred year old winery where the wine is produced. There’s a wine museum there and you can taste the creations along with local cheeses.
The winery is family-run and you can book your visit here.
12. Set sail on a catamaran cruise
Another of the more romantic activities in Gran Canaria is the various cruises you can take around the island. This luxury cruise includes a fabulous buffet and gives you the option of going out on a speed boat – or you can book a half day catamaran cruise instead. Check prices for that here.
13. Swim or sunbathe at Playa de las Canteras
The stretch of coast in the north of the island boasts a beautiful sandy beach that’s perfect for catching some rays or swimming. It’s popular with all ages and you’ll usually find a group playing volleyball or football on the sand.
14. Stroll along the promenade
Playa de las Canteras is lined with a pleasant, clean promenade with plenty of bars and restaurants where you can sit and people watch with a jug of sangria. It’s a lovely walk and while a lot of the island is hilly, this walk is nice and flat!
15. Try Canarian potatoes
I just had to dedicate a whole item on this list of the top things to do in Gran Canaria to these wrinkly little potatoes! Papas arrugadas are a local dish and they’re absolutely gorgeous when dipped or doused in the red and green mojo sauce. Seriously, order them everywhere you go!
16. Shop
As well as Spain’s big department store for luxury purchases, El Corte Ingles, Las Palmas has a number of international shops like Primark, Zara and Massimo Dutti. Of course, there are also lots of beautiful boutiques on the island. If you’re into antiques, you might need to add an extra bag to your return flight home!
17. Visit the rainforest
Gran Canaria’s unique climate means you can be on the beach in the morning and in the rainforest that afternoon! If you’re a nature lover, you can visit the ravine of Barranco de Azuaje, Los Tilos de Moya, Valle de Agaete and Finca-Bodega Los Berrazales, where you’ll be surrounded by fruit trees and coffee plantations.
Book a Gran Canaria rainforest trip here.
18. Dine in style
I was pleasantly surprised to find a great variety of fine dining options in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. Our standout meal was at a restaurant called Triciclo in Vegueta. Triciclo serves a creative menu filled with Canarian and other flavours, the service is fantastic and you can see the chefs at work. it also isn’t extortionate, which is refreshing.
Craving steak? We had a slap-up meal at El Churrasco and I’d definitely recommend.
19. See the Red Canyon
One of the greatest natural attractions in Gran Canaria looks like it belongs in Jordan. The Barranco de Barafonso is a stunning ochre-hued 250 metre ravine that was carved by water many years ago. It’s one of the best photo spots in Gran Canaria.
You can rent a car and drive to La Fortaleza, walk or book a tour to see the canyon.
20. Sip sundowners
My favourite memory from our trip to Gran Canaria was the evening we spent watching the sun set on the roof of our hotel. Santa Catalina Hotel has a stunning rooftop bar with a pool and even if you’re not a guest, you can book a table for drinks. The cocktails are exceptional – we had the best whiskey sour I’ve ever tasted.
21. Visit the sand dunes of Maspalomas
Another of the best activities in Gran Canaria is a trip to the island’s desert. The Maspalomas sand dunes are a sight that’s become synonymous with the destination. The dunes can be reached from Playa del Ingles and there are three walking routes.
Book a tour here.
22. Plan a day at Sioux City Park Gran Canaria
One of the more unique things to do in Gran Canaria takes you back to the Wild West! Sioux City Park is a realistic replica of a Wild Western town that was used to shoot movies. There’s an onsite zoo and a real saloon bar for refreshments during your day out.
The park offers some of the best activities for kids in Gran Canaria, as they can watch cowboy duels, bank assaults and cattle demonstrations.
Buy your entry ticket for Sioux City Park here.
23. Do an off-road jeep safari
Kick your holiday into gear with a jeep adventure in Gran Canaria that takes you from Salobre to Lake Chira. During your trip, you’ll see views of Roque Noblo and drive through the Valley of the Thousand Palms to the quaint village of Fataga.
Check prices for jeep safaris in Gran Canaria here. This tour is for the entire day and includes lunch. Alternatively, book a guided buggy tour.
24. Go abseiling
Only one of the canyons in Gran Canaria actually has water: the Barranco de los Cernícalos ravine in the northeast of the island. Avid explorers can trek through the jungle and abseil down a 12 metre waterfall.
Book your canyoning activity in Gran Canaria here – the fee includes all of your equipment, guide etc. Alternatively, you can book a full day of coasteering that includes rock jumping, zip lining, via ferrata climbing and abseiling.
25. Spend a day at Gran Canaria’s waterpark
Take a break from sightseeing in Gran Canaria and cool off at Aqualand Maspalomas. This family-friendly park is the largest in Gran Canaria and has resident sea lions.
Buy your Aqualand ticket in advance here.
26. Visit the alligator zoo
Did you know that Gran Canaria is home to the largest collection of alligators in Europe? Cocodrilo Park has over 500 animals including turtles, lizards, llamas, monkeys, and chimpanzees.
If you buy an entrance ticket here, you’ll get your transport to the park included in the price.
27. Eat paella
When in Spain, it’s sacrilegious not to tuck into a steaming pan of paella on your holiday. To avoid eye rolls from the locals, order paella at lunch, never dinner. Some of the best paella in Gran Canaria is served at the beachfront restaurants that line Playa de las Canteras.
28. Explore Gran Canaria on horseback
There aren’t many places in the world where you can ride a horse on volcanic terrain, and Gran Canaria is one of them. During your horseback excursion, you can admire views of the island’s sand dunes and Maspalomas Beach.
Choose from a one or two hour horse riding experience at a local ranch here.
29. Go kayaking
Another popular water-based activity in Gran Canaria is kayaking. You can either hire a kayak on the beach closest to your accommodation or book a half day tour which includes a stop at the Los Militares archeological site where you’ll learn about the local culture, then a stop at one of the last remaining untouched beaches on the island, Playa de Montaña Arena.
30. Have fun at the amusement park
The aptly-named Wooland is the only park of its kind in the Canary islands. It has around 30 rides, a dedicated children’s park, roller coasters, carousels, a ferris wheel and live entertainment.
Get your Wooland entry ticket here.
31. Browse at the local markets
Sightseeing in Gran Canaria isn’t just about natural attractions and historic sites. One of the best ways to have an authentic experience in any destination is to dive into its local markets and there are plenty in Gran Canaria!
Pop into the mercado in Las Palmas or pick out handcrafted Canarian souvenirs and other treasures at two of the best markets on the island: the San Mateo and Teror markets.
You can book a day trip to these markets that includes a visit to a traditional village.
32. Wander around Puerto de Mogán
Puerto de Mogán has to be one of the most picturesque places to visit in Gran Canaria. The traditional fishing village has that typical Spanish aesthetic with bougainvillea spilling over its whitewashed walls and is often referred to as ‘little Venice’.
While you’re in Puerto de Mogan, stop at the local market if you happen to visit on a Friday, have drinks at the harbour and snap lots of pictures!
You can book a day trip to this beautiful town that includes a boat trip to Puerto Rico here.
33. Explore the island on an electric bike
One of the most fun ways to get around during a day of Gran Canaria sightseeing is by hiring an e-bike here. The island is relatively large and I was expecting the main attractions in Las Palmas to be a bit closer together, so an e-bike would have been a brilliant addition to our trip.
I’ve previously done an e-bike tour in Benidorm and it was so fun!
34. Stroll around the botanic gardens
Take a moment of calm amid the lush greenery at Jardín Botánico Viera y Clavijo in Tafira Alta. This peaceful botanical garden boasts more than 500 plants, many of which are unique to the island.
35. Hike to Roque Nublo
If hiking is your thing on holiday, you can’t miss Roque Nublo. It’s a volcanic rock in Tejeda that dates back millions of years and visiting it means you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping mountain views. Drive or get a taxi to Degollada de la Goleta and start your hike.
36. Learn about local culture
If you’d like to learn more about Canarian culture, Pueblo Canario is a must-visit in Gran Canaria. It’s great for kids because there are live performances by musicians wearing traditional local costume.
37. Visit Las Palmas’ art galleries
The city of Las Palmas is home to many of Gran Canaria’s cultural attractions and in the old town of Vegueta you’ll find San Martín Centro de Cultura Contemporánea.
38. See where Columbus stayed
Casa de Colón is another important place to visit in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The museum is dedicated to Christopher Columbus, who stayed there while his ship was being fixed en route to the New World.
39. Marvel at the local architecture
Gran Canaria’s architecture is wonderfully diverse, with a clear Spanish influence. Many of Gran Canaria’s most interesting structures hark back to the island’s colonial past.
Nowhere on the island is this better exemplified than in Vegueta, where the cobblestone streets are fringed with an array of beautiful old buildings with wooden balconies.
40. Visit Museo Canario
Also located in the Vegueta district, Museo Canario is one of the best places to go in Gran Canaria to learn more about the destination and its pre-colonial era. The exhibits are mainly archeological artefacts and mummies.
There’s a gift shop at the museum.

Gran Canaria has rightly been called a continent in miniature form. This means that that there are so many things to see in Gran Canaria. It is the most diverse of the Canary Islands giving you plenty of things to do in Gran Canaria.
The roaring Atlantic surf on the West gives way gradually to a lush and verdant north. The Spanish island is therefore an island comprised of many microclimates as well. If you decide to hike around the island you should bring layers that are easy to take off and put back on as you go from one mini region to the next.
Visitors have an abundance of things to do in Gran Canaria. You can tour the cosmopolitan and historic capital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria or dance, enjoy the beach, and be a typical tourist in its various resorts of Playa de Ingles, San Agustin, Meloneras, Maspalomas, Puerto de Mogan, and Puerto Rico – Amadores.
Whatever you are interested in doing while here, Gran Canaria has something to offer everyone from families to couples to individual travelers. Keep reading to learn our top 25 things to do in Gran Canaria.
Table of Contents
1.
Take A Gran Canaria Highlights Tour
As there are so many things to see in Gran Canaria, a visit to the island is not complete without going on a highlights tour. This tour begins by loading up visitors from the tourist resorts of the south of the island then heading to the northeast to Arucas.
It makes a pass through the capital Las Palmas going by the seafront promenade and two of the cosmopolitan city’s beaches. Throughout the tour, participants will pass numerous banana plantations where you will see the world famous Canarian banana growing.
In Arucas the tour visits two important locations. These include the Arehucas Rum Factory where you will learn all about making rum and the neo-Geothic era San Juan Bautista church from the 1900s. Rum was originally invented here in the 1500s and it remains a big island tradition.
The tour continues through Teror to take you to see the famed Basilica of the Virgin of Pino, the island’s patron saint. You will be able to walk the streets to take in the many post-colonial era houses with their traditional Canarian balconies and courtyards.
Here you will also see many lovely fountains, terraces, and landscaped gardens. On the way out of Valleseco village, the tour passes by traditional cave houses actually carved into the mountains. These are mostly inhabited to this day.
On the entire trip, you will see a wide range of contrasting flora. At more than 1,000 meters (over 3,000 feet), the tour will show you uniquely beautiful landscapes covered by the Canary Pine, fennel, ferns, and other native flora.
2. Visit the Aquarium of Poema del Mar
Poema del Mar is the only aquarium that you will find on Gran Canaria. The capital’s latest and most wonderful attraction for tourists is something that everyone should see in Gran Canaria.
Visitors claim that going is something like witnessing a live recording session of Blue Planet. You are able to closely watch their many interesting and rare attractions including the Asian sheepshead wrasse that is able to switch its gender.
The aquarium derives its name from a painting series created by symbolist painter Nestor Martin-Fernandez de la Torre from 1913 to 1924. The paintings are still on display in the Museo Nestor in Las Palmas. Buy your ticket here.
3. Go See Cueva Pintada Museum and the Archaeological Park
For those who are interested in the generally top-rated archeological site of the island, Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria.
The site remains among the most critical pre-Spanish era archaeological sites on the island. The cave is decorated with geometric patterns and shapes. One theory is that these are connected with solar and lunar calendars.
A great feature of this site is that it turns out to be the easiest to get to of the various archaeological sites on the island. The cave is not up a steep cliff, but rather lies right in the middle of town. This cave proves to be the site’s highlight, and you get a guided tour to bring it to life.
As for the museum, this provides reconstructions and videos to illuminate what local island life was like before the Spanish conquerors came. A central exhibit of the museum is the 5,000 square meter excavated area that allows you to see the remains of cave houses that archaeologists have excavated from volcanic rock.
You are able to walk around and explore these. The 90 minute tour of the painted cave is offered in English, Spanish, German, and French. While sadly the triangular shapes and their colors adoring the walls have deteriorated significantly, you can still appreciate them.
4. Take A Cruise Aboard a Turkish Gulet
Aphrodite is a Turkish gulet that has been refitted as a party cruise. From the resort of Puerto Rico you can set sail aboard this chartered vessel.
This cruise will provide you with not only a breathtaking voyage, but also the opportunity to try some of the typical Canarian cuisine. They serve a traditional papas arrugadas y mojo (which is boiled new potatoes served with a zesty sauce) that you can polish off with wine, cava, and beer.
>>> Check this cruise aboard a Turkish Gulet here <<<
5. Tour Casa Museo de Colon (Christopher Columbus Museum)
A famous site that remains among the most important things to see in Gran Canaria is the museum house of Christopher Columbus (Casa Museo de Colon).
In this fascinating place you see a well-documented exhibit on the voyages of Columbus with interesting showcases of the Canary Islands’ important role of the staging port for transatlantic shipping.
A highlight is the model galleons section (which includes “La Niña”) on the first floor. Children are always fascinated by the detail. They have a crucifix believed to be from the explorer’s ship. All three of Columbus ships are modeled in another room.
Other rooms contain various historical maps and reproductions of ancient maps from the 1500s along with astrolabes that were critical in long distance oceangoing navigation. In the upstairs section there is an impressive collection of art.
There are also many exhibits from the various early governors’ of the island who called this lavish residence home.

6. Visit the Catedral de Santa Ana & Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro
Las Palma’s beating spiritual heart is the impressive grey cathedral of Santa Ana. The building is massive and required 350 years to finish from the time they started it in the 1400s.
Its facade is neoclassical while the interior is graced by stained glass that allows beautiful sunlit patterns to shine through. Art historians call this a fantastic example of the Atlantic Gothic style.
The tall columns appear to be a modeling of the palm trees lining the square outside. For art lovers, the cathedral contains a few beautiful paintings of the most respected 1700s era Canarian artist Juan de Miranda.
With your admission you can also go see the museum of sacred art nearby in the Patio de los Naranjos. Here you will see an impressive collection of religious memorabilia and art such as wooden sculptures, hundreds of years old books and manuscripts, ornaments, and sacred art.
The setting of the museum is beautiful and comes with lovely orange blossom scents in the spring. From the bell tower top (accessible by an elevator) you can take in the incredible full view of the encircling city as well as the coast.
7. Shop at the Mercado del Puerto
If you have ever been to the London Borough Market, then you will appreciate Las Palmas’ version of it. Shopping here for vegetables, fruit, fish, seafood, and meat like the locals did here from the 1800s is a great thing to do in Gran Canaria.
The stalls from the original years are still serving locals and visitors today. There are now also food and drink locations here that provide interesting variety. You have a range of choices such as Italian Cachuk, Mexican Ay Carmela LPA, and international cocktails in DO Mercado.
8. Go to Dunas de Maspalomas and Take a Camel Ride
The regular top pick for best nature reserve on the island is found in Maspalomas. The dunes here cover an incredible 400 hectares and earned the status as nature reserve back in the 1990s. This has preserved them from the constantly building hotels.
In order to take in the best angle of the dunes you should view it from Avenida Tirajana at the bottom. You can walk past the arches in the Hotel Riu Palace of Maspalomas to reach the balcony that is encircled by a lovely botanical garden featuring flora original to the Canaries Islands.
Another way to enjoy this top nature reserve to see in Gran Canaria is to access them from a lane that lies immediately east of the Hotel Riu Palace of Maspalomas. From here you can walk right into the dunes.
My recommendation? Take a camel safari trip to fully enjoy the experience and feel like you are riding in the Sahara Desert.

9.
Take A Day Trip to Loro Park
A great way to spend a day at one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria is to go to the Loro Park in Tenerife to see the animals and shows. The park features four different world famous shows of performing animals along with the chance to view many different species of animals.
Transportation can be provided from your Gran Canaria hotel to the Loro Park. Without a doubt this is one of the most popular attractions in the Canary Islands with roughly 1.5 million yearly visitors.
There is a sea lion show where you can watch them jump through loops, juggle balls, and splash and dance in the pool with their trainers to musical accompaniment.
The killer whales show is best seen while wearing one of the park’s raincoats as these huge whales tend to splash the audience as they jump and perform. The dolphin show is also well worth watching.
The park features animals found on all continents of the globe from every species. You can take in a range of monkeys including chimpanzees and gorillas as well as tigers, penguins, crocodiles, jaguars, and a vast array of aquatic life in their aquarium.

10. Shop the Malls and then Party at the Massive Dance Clubs of Playa Del Ingles
By day Playa del Ingles offers several large shopping malls where you can look for all sorts of goods and souvenirs. By night the resort provides unique dance venues in the same shopping malls of this massive tourist complex.
After the sun sets, the malls convert into dance floors and feature some of the largest dance parties in all of Spain, complete with renowned deejays providing the pounding beats.
11. Try the Top Fusion Restaurant Llévame al Huerto in Las Palmas
Las Palmas offers more than simply Spanish and Canarian food. The top-rated fusion restaurant Llévame al Huerto is one not to miss. The place has excellent ambience with oversized lampshades, plants potted in baskets, tables in blonde wood, and uniquely colorful cushions.
The menu is called “flexitarian” and the food is consistently rated as “to die for.” Featured items on the menu include pad thai, vegan corriander risotto, and quinoa falafel.
12. Dine at the Top-Rated Spanish Restaurant Deliciosa Marta in Las Palmas
A classic thing to do in Gran Canaria is to try the local cuisine. Deliciosa Marta is a top-rated Spanish restaurant in the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The restaurant is chic and resplendent with an exposed stone wall. In the last decade the restaurant has gained the reputation as among the most beloved dining locations in the capital.
The owner is Chef Pol who trained while at the famed El Bulli in Barcelona. His menu is constantly evolving and features such delicacies as pork belly, scallops, and truffles (locally sourced whenever possible). You will want to make a reservation to be sure of a table.
13. Take A Dolphin and Whale Watching Boat Tour
No trip to the Canaries would be complete without taking in a dolphin and whale watching boat tour, a must do in Gran Canaria. These tours will allow you to look for over 30 species of sea mammals.
Among these are the whales and dolphins that call Gran Canaria home. The tour is more impressive as it promises a guarantee. If passengers do not see any dolphins while on the tour, the company will provide a free ticket for another tour on a different day.
You only have to sail a couple of miles from the shores of the island to appreciate the various species of whales and dolphins living here. The dolphins will seemingly perform in their natural habitat, hunting, jumping, and playing alongside the catamaran.
Thanks to the glass bottom boat, you can see the beloved mammals of the sea from many angles.
14. Go on a Gran Canaria Fishing Trip
Gran Canaria is famous for its big sport fishing. Some of the tours leave from Pasito Blanco pier found in between the tourist complex stretching from Puerto Rico to Maspalomas. The tours will allow you to charter the entire boat or come alone or with friends and clients.
Because the fish are so abundant here year round, this is one of the things to do in Gran Canaria on any visit. The deep sea fishing in winter and fall yields groupers, snappers, seabass, mackerel, eels, blacktail combers, and morays.
During the spring or summer, the current ushers in white marlin, blue marlin, longfin, yellowfin, bluefin, spearfish, skipjack tunas, big eye, and dorados. All year long you can catch small tuna while large tuna is caught from the months of March to May.
15. Experience the Adventure of the Yellow Submarine
The island offers something fairly unique to see in Gran Canaria in the Yellow Submarine. This appropriately named underwater vessel takes you on a full 45 minute sea adventure to depths of over 20 meters (more than 60 feet).
You enjoy comfortable seats while taking in the sea and its world via large portholes and TV monitors that are linked to video cameras found outside the submarine. Among the beautiful schools of area fish you will see are zebra breams, parrotfish, grey mullets, trumpet fish, bastard grunts, and groupers.
The Yellow Submarine also takes you out to an authentic shipwreck lying on the sea bed. This “Cermona II” is actually a 32 meters long (over 95 feet) fishing boat made with a steel hull. The hull has provided shelter and a habitat for countless shell fish and fish native to Gran Canaria.

16. Take a Buggy Tour Safari of Gran Canaria’s Rugged Interior
Seeing the rugged interior of Gran Canaria by buggy tour is an interesting way to enjoy the nature of this stunningly varied island. The guided tour takes no more than eight buggies through incomparable landscapes and gorgeous ravines.
Participants get to drive the buggies in a safari that covers both off road and asphalt paths for maximum adventure. The tour operators watch closely over the vehicles to ensure that everyone has a safe and good time.
17. Take a Helicopter Guided Tour of the Island
A fantastic way to enjoy the amazing scenery of Gran Canaria is to take it in by helicopter. This panoramic view from above gives you so much to see in Gran Canaria. You have several different route packages from different companies.
Some of these will take you on a flight above the island’s south coast while another will get you on top of the island’s famous Clouded Rock (Roque Nublo) which lies in the heart of the island.

18. Visit Las Palmas the Island’s Capital
You should not come to Gran Canaria and not spend a day exploring the capital. These excursions will take you on a guided tour of the historical center, beaches, and other interesting sites. They provide shopping time during the afternoon in the best commercial districts.
Most tours will start with the historical city center called the Vegueta. This is where the original settlements occurred and the Spanish founded Royal Las Palmas back in 1478.
While strolling along the peaceful streets of the old town, you can see the traditional colonial Spanish architecture of that era, particularly the pine wood balconies adorning the house facades.
This city was the penultimate stop for Christopher Columbus en route to the Indies that actually turned out to be his discovery of America. The Hermitage of San Antonio Abad was constructed where the legendary explorer and his crew prayed before departing for the New World.
You should also make time to see the prior residence of the governors at the Columbus House Museum.
The tours will take you to see the social center of the old city at the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Episcopal Palace, Cathedral of Las Palmas, and the old town hall. From the main square opposing the cathedral you can see the dog statues that epitomize the name Gran Canaria’s origins. In Latin, Cannis means dog.
19. Go See the Volcano Crater and Largest Botanical Gardens in Spain
There are tours that will take you out to see the volcano crater of “Caldera de Bandama” as well as the “Viera y Clavijo” botanical gardens that are the biggest in all of Spain. The enormous volcano crater erupted over 3,000 years ago. It possesses a diameter of a kilometer (over half a mile) and is 200 meters deep (over 600 feet).
The botanical gardens typically referred to as El Jardin Canario are the next stop on the guided tour. This enormous garden covers 23 hectares .You will see more than 570 native to the island species here.
20. Take the Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour of Las Palmas
A great way to see the capital of Las Palmas is via the city’s Hop on Hop Off Bus tour, operated by the Las Palmas tourist bus. This will take you to see the most significant locations in the Gran Canaria capital.
The tour provides 11 individual stops where you can take in at your leisure the museum, monuments, attractions, and beaches of the cosmopolitan city. The upper decks of these two level busses give fabulous views and let you appreciate the balmy climate of Las Palmas that has been named the best in the world.
Some of the stops will take you by the city’s two principle beaches, the west side Canteras Beach called among the finest urban beaches on earth and the eastern side charm-filled Alcaravaneras Beach.
Other stops cover the finest areas for shopping, such as Mesa y López that contains the Corte Ingles primary boutique shops and the city’s top commercial street Triana. You can also access the two primary shopping centers from some of the stops, including Las Arena Shopping Center and Muelle Shopping Center.
Included with your hop on hop off tour is a no additional cost walking tour of the old town that departs from the Vegueta bus stop at 1:15 pm. This will take in all of the most essential locations of the historical quarter and be led by an official city guide.
You will be able to experience the Plaza del Pilar Nuevo behind the cathedral and fronting the Columbus house. It will take you to see the most excellent Las Palmas’ museums including:
- the Columbus House Museum,
- the Canary Museum that concentrates on the aboriginal inhabitants’ history,
- the Elder Museum focusing on technology and science,
- the Perez Galdos House Museum that covers the works and life of one of the greatest Spanish literary geniuses,
- and the Nestor Museum that shows off the great Canarian artist’s paintings.
The bus tour will also show off a number of the most important avenues and main streets of the Gran Canarian capital. You will be able to visit parks and plazas like San Telmo Park, Santa Catalina Park, the Doramas Park, Cairasco Plaza, and the Spanish Plaza.
You will also become acquainted with the two locales for theater and concerts in Alfredo Kraus Auditorium and the Perez Galdos Theater.
21. Visit the Puerto de Mogan Market
Puerto de Mogan is among the most gorgeous developments on the island. The charming village became constructed surrounding an older fishing village during the 1980s through reclaiming land from the sea.
You should take the time to walk the tiny streets that lead to the charming harbor. There are many beautiful Mediterranean styled homes containing color and detail as well as gardens bursting with life in the form of bougainvilleas.
Be sure to walk along the waterways and the tiny beach containing powdery sand as well as the impressive yacht harbor that boasts 225 individual moorings. Friday is market day.
You should not miss the stalls full of authentic Canarian plants, handicrafts, linens, flowers, vegetables, fruits, leather goods, clothes, jewelry, shoes, and Canarian cuisine. The market day is a perfect time to take in the ambience of this idyllic place on Gran Canaria.
22. Take in the Traditional Markets of Teror and San Mateo
Two markets that you will not want to miss are the traditional markets of Teror and San Mateo. There is a Sunday morning excursion that goes to both, allowing you to enjoy the most evocative towns of the north-central region of Gran Canaria while you shop at their beloved markets.
The tour will pass by beautiful ravines common to the island like the Barranco de la Mina and the Barranco de las Goteras. These two towns of Teror and San Mateo lie 600 meters (over 1,800 feet) above sea level in the island’s north.
The villages are encircled by fertile, verdant landscape that is completely different from the desert looking regions of the island’s south.
Each of the markets pulls in literally thousands of individuals each Sunday. The market in San Mateo is covered and found within two huge halls. Teror’s market is an open air street market held on the streets located around the church. The two markets boast stalls containing crafts, textiles, jewelry, food, toys, and locally produced goods.
You should try the traditional Teror sausage, the island’s world famous cheese, and Gran Canaria’s delectable sweets. You can try these delicious edible bites in the stalls as well as the restaurants and pubs nearby these markets.
You can also come learn how to dance the world famous Spanish, Canarian, and international dances played live by area musicians.
The visit to Tenor will also let you experience its charming historic city center that remains among the most gorgeous on the entire island. In the Basilica de la Virgen del Pino you will see the island’s patron saint. The houses contain colorful facades featuring the traditional pine balconies of Gran Canaria.
The beautiful thing about this half day tour to both markets in San Mateo and Teror is that it lets you mix popular traditions, culture, gorgeous landscapes, history, shopping, and cuisine all into one fun filled Sunday activity.
23. Take in the Town of Artenara and View of Mirador de Unamuno
Artenara features a top-rated viewpoint for the island in the View of Mirador de Unamuno. It is only one of several excellent viewing vantage points in the town. This Mirador de Unamuno lets you gaze out into a stunning panoramic vista of the volcanic caldera. It will take your breath away every time.
24. Eat at Samsara in Maspalomas
While in the tourist enclave of Maspalomas, you should not miss the chance to eat at the outstanding Samsara restaurant. It is found directly across from where the Palm Beach hotel sits. You can not miss the enormous Buddha statue setting the mood.
The dishes here merge Spanish and Canarian ingredients with flavors from Asia. Two examples are the island’s famous smoked goat’s cheese served with wasabi and black pasta featuring shellfish and shrimp in lemongrass and lemon sauce. You will want to make reservations to secure a table.
25. Try the Local Brewery and Fusion Restaurant Texada
For a local brewery that is also an excellent fusion restaurant, be sure to try the Texada. Another unique feature is that this fantastic eatery gets its provender directly from its very own farm. They feature three different hand crafted beers as well.
Texada is found in Tejeda. Visitors recommend the fabulous cheese soup and Burger Nublo that comes on a traditional roof tile. You will need reservations to get a table.

They are sand dunes located on the south coast of the island across a 404-hectare area of the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana and the area has been protected as a nature reserve since 1987.
The dunes were formed by sand from the now subdued marine shelf during the last ice age but now makes for a really fun day out and one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria. Nearby you can also visit the lighthouse Faro Maspalomas, where Christopher Columbus started his voyage to discover America.
Defo one of the best things to do in Maspalomas…
4. Visit Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park
Another one of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria is located in the town of Gáldar. The Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park is one of the most important archaeological sites in Gran Canaria.
The museum exists in order to preserve, research and disseminate one of the most unique settlements, the Ancient Canarians.

If you know me, you’ll know I love being outside, which is why a visit to the Tamadaba Natural Park is one of the best things to do in Gran Canaria. The national park is huge and set upon over 7,500 hectares of land, from the highlands down to the coast, within the Unesco Biosphere Reserve.
There are lots of things t do in the national park, including hiking, walking and mountain-biking. You can have a picnic under the canopy at the Llanos de La Mimbre picnic area, before heading to the La Bandera peak. And you can head towards the coast to see El Balcón viewpoint, the sea cliff formation also known as the dragon’s tail.
6. Go and see Roque Nublo
The famous Roque Nublo is a volcanic rock on the island of Gran Canaria and is one of the most recognisable places to visit on the island. The rock is 67m tall and it’s top is 1,813 m above sea level making it the third-highest altitude of the island.

7. Visit the Catedral de Santa Ana
The twin-towered Cathedral of Santa Ana is a Roman Catholic church located in the island’s capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and today is a well-known religious building. It’s one of the best things to do in Las Palmas.
The Cathedral of Santa Ana was the central parish, which was built between 1575 and 1576. Some remarkable pieces of art can still be seen in the chapels of the cathedral including many statues, most of which are from the famous religious sculptor José Luján Pérez.
The church is open Monday – Friday 10.00 to 16.30 and Saturdays 10.00 to 13.30 – access only through the Sacred Art Museum and is around €2-€3 for entry.
8. Go wild at Taurito
One of the most exclusive resort areas in Gran Canaria is Playa Taurito, located on Gran Canaria’s southwest coast, nearby to Puerto Rico. It has a handful of luxury hotels stacked by the rugged volcanic cliffs, with a stunning beach. It’s one of the best Gran Canaria beach to visit.
And the areas most popular attraction is the waterpark Playa Taurito Lido. It includes a lagoon-style swimming pool, tropical gardens, plus lots of waterslides including corkscrews, kamikazes, and children’s pool. It is one of the best place to stay in gran Canaria and offers some amazing accommodation in gran Canaria.

9. Visit the Caves of Valeron
Valerón’s “monastery” is an archaeological site on the Spanish island in Santa Maria de Guia, on Valerón’s cliff.
Here you can see a big cave, where aborigines of the island kept food in the past and it is a very interesting place, where you can see this place, learn a lot about the history of the island and enjoy with the beautiful views of surroundings. Also nearby is the Gáldar Painted cave, one of the emblematic sites of Grand Canary.
It’s worth visiting this place because of its cultural and historical value on Gran Canaria and the granaries at Cenobio de Valerón have been prepared for visitors so they can learn more about the region.
10. Sunbathe at Puerto Rico beach
Puerto Rico is renowned for being the best place in Gran Canaria, for sunbathing, relaxing and enjoying a laid back holiday. The region is busy most of the year, but especially in the summer.
There are so many things to do in Puerto Rico Gran Canaria and it is one of the best areas to stay in gran Canaria, and here are some of the best family hotels in gran Canaria too.
The area has lots of things to do including jet skiing, sailing, diving, big-game fishing and windsurfing, and leisure excursions such as boat trips, dolphin-watching or glass-bottomed boats to discover the rich underwater life of the area.
This is the best place to settle yourself during a week-long holiday if you want an atmosphere, with activities galore and great access to shops and restaurants. I would definitely recommend staying around here if you have kids or travelling with a family, as its the best area in gran Canaria.

11. Go on a Whale Watching Boat Tour
One of my favourite animals on the planet is the whale. And going whale watching with a reputable company, that supports the whales, instead of simply earning profit from them are located on the island.
Seeing whales in their natural environment is incredible and there are many tours on the island that can offer you spectacular experiences.
You may also see the small common dolphin on most cruises, and if you are lucky, you will get to see the largest animal that has lived on the earth; the blue whale. This is defo one of the best places to visit in Gran Canaria.
12. Go and see Caldera de Bandama (volcano)
This journey may be challenging, but the rewards are worth it! The drive to reach Caldera de Bandama can be tough, via winding roads through towns, villages and vineyards.
After around 6 km you’ll arrive at the stunning Caldera de Bandama. The volcanic crater is 1000m in diameter, 200m deep, and 569m high, and the peak also known as the Pico de Bandama, is possible to drive up. There is an observation platform where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the entire north coast. And on a clear day, you might even see Fuerteventura.
If you are more of the adventurous type, you can even climb down into the crater via a steep path, which is about a 30-minute hike. Fancy being brave? I am not sure I’d be brave enough!
13. Try scuba diving
And last but not least, why not try scuba diving on the island of Gran Canaria. With an amazing climate, that means you can dive all year round in wetsuits, and the sub-tropical waters are warmed by the gulf stream.
You can find a variety and colours of marine life can explore wrecks, reefs, caves, caverns and a variety of habitats, as well as sharks, rays, nudibranchs, moray eels, big shoals, and lots of colourful fish.

Fantastic night out!!
Laughed from start to finish, the girls are amazing and put on one hell of a show. .
Lots of costume changes, great songs to sing along to and we had a great night..
The guys do a fab job, running about getting everyone’s drinks..
The cocktails are nice, but if you want something really yummy – try the trifle shot – It was perfection!!
We will be visiting again, as we enjoyed it that much..
This is an adult show, with swearing and sexual themes – If you are offended easily, go somewhere else.. More seats for those of us who enjoy this fabulous art..

The new Mall is a pretty modern place compared to the old commercial and Europa centre and just what the area needs. Great shops and restaurants with a beautiful fountain in the middle. Ate in a few of the restaurants, some still to open. The Covid means masks must be worn however the mall is well equipped with hand sanitizers dotted all around. On the grounds of the former Atlantica water park, next to the old commercial centre (being refurbished) its in a prime site for locals and tourists alike.

Lots of reviews slating this place but don’t be put off! Lots of bars and a wide selection of restaurants and souvenir shops.. yes, you will get invited into every single one but that’s to be expected and a polite “no thank you” is accepted! You can haggle in the souvenir shops and the bars and restaurants offer great service and open til late for those of you out for a good night out! Everyone is warm, friendly and very polite. Highly recommend the new “Turbo” bar. Prices are reasonable and staff go out of their way to please. Supermarket is useful and reasonably priced. Is it high end? No! It’s a tourist area, built for visitors, accept it for what it is and you’ll enjoy it. Oh and for the best full English breakfast, go to Barbacoa! Lol

Review of: Spirit Of The Sea
We saw both dolphins and whales
We immediately decided that we would go on such an excursion – it only remained to choose on which ship. Quite by accident we boarded the Spirit of the sea. The lowest offered price for two adults and two children (the youngest is under 3 years old) is 68 Euros. The ship is not big, but there is more than enough space for everyone. Purely. Non-alcoholic drinks are offered. Water is free. Immediately undressed the packages and warned that we were in the ocean and would rock hard. No one seemed to need it.
Now the main thing is impressions! We were lucky – first we met a female whale with a calf. They swam around the boat for a long time. Then the captain took the ship further into the sea to the dolphins. The children squealed with delight – we met a large flock of dolphins. There were more than 10 for sure. They swam around the ship, jumped. There were super impressions, hundreds of photographs.
To be honest – when we were going, I did not expect that we would meet so many marine animals, so our impressions of the trip exceeded our expectations.
Yes, you need to take warm clothes – the wind blows in the ocean and shakes. It can be difficult for people with a weak vestibular apparatus.

main attractions and driving route
What to see in Gran Canaria in three to five days or in a week, the coolest sights and places of the “must visit” series, Gran Canaria driving route and map.
How to get to Gran Canaria
From dozens of European cities, Gran Canaria can be reached by low-cost carriers WizzAir or Ryanair, in addition, classic airlines such as Lufthansa fly there.
Gran Canaria can also be reached from any island in the Canarian archipelago by ferry Fred Olsen .
We combined these two ways and got to Gran Canaria from Tenerife by ferry, and Ryanair returned to Berlin and then to Kyiv.
I have already written in detail about our winter trip, read it.
Things to see in Gran Canaria
I assume that you will not be limited to the beaches of the island and are going to see at least the main locations. And here there are a little less sights than on the hyped and very popular Tenerife.
Read also: Tenerife or Gran Canaria, which island to choose for vacation
I skip entertainment centers, water parks and other mass tourist things. We are not interested in this and this stuff is enough in Tenerife in the Las Americas region.
All the places listed below and sights of Gran Canaria can be combined into one route and pass it in a couple of days, making one stop in the mountains. As always, I use asterisks for landmarks.
*** – Super places worth visiting in any case and first of all
** – Worth to include in the route
* – worth stopping by if you are passing by and there is time the most can be covered with radial departures from your holiday destination – Las Palmas, Maspalomas, Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogan. These are the top holiday destinations in Gran Canaria .
We arrived from Tenerife on the ferry company Fred Olsen to the port of Agaete, we will start with it.
Cliffs and port of Agaete – Gran Canaria **
Port of Agaete is not just a port where ferries arrive from Tenerife and Fuerteventura, it is one of the attractions of Gran Canaria and a place worth visiting.
Near the port there is a small beach with black volcanic sand, which is beautifully framed by black rocks. These rocks are an analogue of Los Gigantes in Tenerife attract divers, tourists and just relax. There are a minimum of tourists, since most immediately after arrival go to their resorts.
A few hundred meters from the port there is a beautiful deserted embankment with a promenade.
Right next to the port – fish cafes and restaurants overlooking the ocean and the bay. There is also an observation deck on the Playa de Las Nieves beach and rocks Agaete .
From Port Agaete a little less than an hour to Las Palmas . We chose it as a base for exploring the island and started from there. Beach holidays were not a priority, but we visited all the beautiful beaches.
Las Palmas ***
The main city of the island is Gran Canaria and its administrative center is Las Palmas . Located in the east of the island. In addition to its historical component and beaches, it is good that it is convenient to start from here to explore the surroundings.
The city was founded by the Spaniards in the 15th century, and is famous for the fact that Christopher Columbus made the first stop here on his first journey. Columbus House is located in the colonial historic center of the city. There is also a cathedral and many cafes, shops and restaurants on the main pedestrian street – Vegeta.
The best beach in Las Palmas and one of the best beaches in Gran Canaria – Las Canteras (Playa de las Canteras) . Long with golden sand and a pedestrian promenade. You will definitely like it. There are no breakwaters here as in Tenerife, as the coast is protected by a reef and there are no big waves. In any case, spending some time on this beach is definitely worth it.
Las Canteras beach is far from the center, you can get there by bus or by car. Parking is available, but paid underground. For the first time in our trip to the Canary Islands, we did not find a place in free parking lots along the streets. Price – 1-3 euros per hour.
Find hotels in Las Palmas >>
Arucas village **
From Las Palmas, this mountain village is within easy reach, less than an hour by car through beautiful mountain serpentines. It is not yet very twisty and comfortable to drive.
Arucas is famous for its cathedral and small colonial center, there were few tourists here. In general, it was beautiful and unusual to see this on the distant Canary Islands. Although somewhere in Europe they would have passed by, of course.
Firgas village **
We climb a little higher to the village of Firgas. There is also a cathedral here, but smaller. The main attraction is a man-made cascading waterfall that flows along the main street – the historic Gran Canaria Boulevard.
This is really something new, complete with steep panoramas of the island and a nice historical center with cafes and restaurants. I recommend to visit, and you can just drop in to Arucas along the way for the company, it will not be superfluous.
Teror ***
Our goal is the highest point of Gran Canaria – the Roca Nublo peak, but on the way we make a stop in the town of Teror and we are not mistaken. A pleasant historical town with a colonial center and the coolest views and panoramas of the Gran Canaria mountain range. It’s worth coming here just for them.
Teror , despite the name, terrorizes us only with its beauty and lush greenery. Tenk then considers the Canary Islands lifeless, bare and deserted, let them travel to Teror, the mountains capture not only the spirit, but the whole thing. There are many hiking trails in Teror and its surroundings, if you like it, you can safely stop for the night. But it will get even worse, I promise.
Tejeda village ***
This is the very center of the island of Gran Canaria, here you can and should, if time permits, make a stop for the night to thoughtfully wander around the fantastically-looking surroundings, go to the highest point of the island , the peak of Roca Nublo and enjoy the local cuisine.
It was in Tejede that we tasted the most delicious lamb. The cuisine on the coast is mainly fish and seafood, and after three weeks of traveling around the islands, we wanted delicious meat and we got it here in the mountains of Gran Canaria.
The village has several beautiful hotels with mountain views and outdoor pools. If you love mountains, you should make a stop for at least one day. We didn’t have it, which I really regretted, because I love hiking in the mountains no less than the sea coast and beaches.
The road to Tejeda deserves a special mention as is the most beautiful in the Canaries and it is also quite difficult in places with its serpentines. You should not be afraid – everything is passable, although in some places we switched to a narrow dirt road, but in the end we reached our destination. A navigator is required, there are signs, but they do not always orient correctly. We used free maps.me on iPhone. A paper map will also not be superfluous, for clarity and verification of the route. We received the paper map at the car rental office in Agaete port .
Find hotels in Tejeda >>
Roque Nublo Peak ***
The highest point of Gran Canaria (1813 m.), you can walk to it from Tejeda or drive up close to the signs. Then walk 30-40 minutes along the hiking trail. We did just that, miscalculated the time a little and got right to the sunset, returning to the lodging for the night almost in the dark.
Don’t be deceived by the distance and ignore what Google shows right away. Roads – mountain serpentine everywhere in the sections from Arugas to Tejeda, plus many stops at the observation decks. The views around make you hang out for a long time. In a couple of places, we easily spent 40-50 minutes and did not notice how time passed.
Theoretically, you can drive to Roca Nublo from Las Palmas and go down the same day in the evening, but leave early in the morning and plan your stops carefully.
If you want to have a relaxing ride and get the most out of it, plan your overnight stay in Tejeda. This is the most comfortable way to explore Gran Canaria. On the coast it will be easier with movements – there is an autobahn and distances are small.
Aguimes village **
We descend from the mountains towards the ocean. Along the way, there will be several more villages worth stopping by, but in approximately the same format as we have already seen. The most famous of them – San Bartolome De Tirajana and Santa Lucia . We just drive through them without a long stop. Our goal is the small village of Aguimes , famous for its sculptures located in the most unexpected places and completely different in format and size.
You can even take a map of the location of the sculptures and try to find the most famous ones – everything will not work out, because this will take a couple of days for sure.
In addition to sculptures, the village has a cozy green center with cool cafes. I wanted to go to each one, but we sat over a cup of coffee in only three establishments. The rest just went to the museum.
Maspalomas Dunes ***
A small piece of desert in the very south of the island. They were the original reason for including Gran Canaria in the itinerary. As a result of the trip, I would still put it in second place after the mountain range with the Roca Nublo peak in the center of the island.
The dunes are low compared to the dunes in the Sahara desert in Morocco, but just as picturesque and a slightly different color. They are located in the south of the island and occupy several kilometers of area along the Atlantic coast.
For a long time, the dunes and Playa del Ingles (playa del Ingles) have been chosen by nudists and representatives of representatives of sexual minorities. In simple terms, the place is fantastically beautiful, but a lot of naked people roam the dunes. If this does not bother you, then welcome, as they say.
It’s up to you to relax here or not, the beach is open to all winds, without breakwaters, but with a very gentle entrance, so the waves just roll over you when entering the water. Swimming is uncomfortable. But you must come at sunset, it is very beautiful and unusual to see a piece of the African landscape in the middle of the Atlantic.
In the tourist center Maspaplomasa there is a lighthouse, restaurants and other activities nearby. In time, the dunes will take at least half a day or at least 3 hours if running. Plan accordingly.
Find hotels in Maspalomas >>
Puerto Rico resort **
Cozy beach, bay and small port – this is Puerto Rico . They sell tours here, so there are a lot of package tourists, if that’s important to you. That is, the place cannot be called wild and sparsely populated, but everything is not so critical. And if the goal is to have a beautiful rest in a beautiful place – Puerto Rico is what you need.
Find hotels in Puerto Rico >>
There are not so many beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria, so it’s worth coming here. It can be for an hour, or you can hang out for a day or two. Depends on your plans and preferences. We spent a couple of hours and moved on to the famous place in Gran Canaria – Puerto de Mogan .
Puerto de Mogán – cove and beach ***
What used to be called a fishing village is now considered one of the most beautiful beaches and coves in Gran Canaria.
Below is the usual tourist life – an oval of the beach, restaurants, cafes and a small but cozy promenade. And at the top there is a hiking trail along the rocks right above the ocean. You can’t get there by car – the entrance is blocked by a barrier, but you should definitely walk on foot. Again, if time permits.
Find hotels in Puerto de Mogan >>
At Puerto de Mogan I would gladly set aside a whole day, but at least three to four hours will be needed even for a cursory inspection.
Completion of the car route in Gran Canaria
You can go further to La Aldea de San Nicolas, then to the already familiar Agaeta and thereby close the circle of travel in Gran Canaria. You will have to drive along the mountain serpentines of the west of Gran Canaria, there will not be anything supernatural and is suitable only for the sake of sports interest or even more variety of impressions from the trip.
If there is no time, you can simply return back along the autobahn to Las Palmas or your permanent location.
We saw the coolest locations at Gran Canaria . The rest we will leave for a second visit or for the very inquisitive and in love with this island. After the trip, we ourselves became adherents of the Canary Islands after returning and now we are seriously considering returning for a longer time.
