Santa Cruz de Tenerife Ferry Port

Santa Cruz de Tenerife along with Los Cristianos is the main ferry port on the island of Tenerife, in the Canaries.

The port is very well connected by road to Tenerife North airport. Tourism industry in Tenerife is very well developed and welcomes tourists all around the year.

Connections are available to all the popular destinations of the Canary Islands, with daily crossings to Gran Canaria (Agaete and Las Palmas) and to the Eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

In Tenerife, don’t miss the Teide National Park and don’t forget to taste the local food, the ‘guachinches’ are unbelievable!

How To Get To Santa Cruz de Tenerife Ferry Port

Things to Do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands

Are you looking for tips on things to do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

As part of our city guides series, we interviewed Linda Wainwright who has lived on the island itself for over 25 years.

Linda shares with us her insider tips on the best things to see and do in Santa Cruz, plus recommendations on where to stay, eat, drink, and explore.

Why visit Santa Cruz de Tenerife?

Because Tenerife is very much a tourist destination, I inevitably have to point out to people thinking of visiting that there is more to the island than sun, sea and sangria, and part of what’s here is Santa Cruz and neighbouring La Laguna.

Both are full of history, lovely old buildings and stunning modern ones (the older parts are often compared to South America), and both have lots of good restaurants and bars where you can eat al fresco.

Circulo de Amistad

Very much cities with hustle and bustle, but still a laid-back vibe. There are also museums, art galleries and churches to visit. Yet ten minutes outside of Santa Cruz is the island’s prettiest beach, Las Teresitas, and ten minutes outside La Laguna and you are in rich, verdant farmland.

Things to Do in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

  • The contemporary Auditorio de Tenerife (often compared to the Sydney Opera House) and home to the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, annual Heineken Jazz Festival, a short opera season in Autumn and year-round music and dance performances of every type.

Auditorio

  • The Market of Nuestra Señora de Africa
  • Teatro Guimerá for the architecture but also for a production depending what’s on – plays will be in Spanish, but there are often music or dance performances too.

Teatro Guimera

  • The Museum of Man and Nature for details of how the volcanic Canary Islands exploded from the sea bed, and for the display of mummified bodies of the original inhabitants, the Guanches, who used to mummify their dead.
  • Tenerife Espacio de Artes (Tenerife Arts Center) for photography and art exhibitions.
  • A stroll around the docks which is a frequent stopping off point for tall ships.
  • A stroll around the recently remodelled Plaza de España, including the tiny, underground museum of San Cristóbal, a part of the city’s original fortification and home to the canon which shot off Lord Horatio Nelson‘s arm when he tried to invade Tenerife in 1797.
  • The centre of La Laguna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and walking its streets is like a journey back in time. It’s worth climbing the tower of La Iglesia de la Concepción to take a look over the valley in which it sits and the beautiful Anaga Mountain range behind.

classic La Laguna

  • Check out the Convent of Santa Catalina.
  • Plaza Adelantado
  • Even the tourist information office which is housed in a gorgeous, renovated building, la Casa de los Capitanes, and where you can pick up information about museums and walking tours.

Where to Eat in Santa Cruz de Tenerife,

In Santa Cruz I don’t even have to think about this!

Calle Noria, which extends from La Plaza de la Iglesia de la Concepción is the place to eat, night or day, with its brightly-painted buildings it will remind you of Habana. It’s full of cafés, bars and restaurants, some quirky and all excellent.

Calle Noria houses

My favorite is El Bulan, where they do extraordinary tapas, tastes and combinations I’ve had nowhere else.

Half the street is lined with chairs and tables (it’s pedestrianized) and you can eat lunch outdoors all year round, though dining in winter might be a bit chilly.

Calle Noria

Although it’s pleasant to sit around the city’s main square, Plaza de España, sadly I couldn’t recommend any of the eateries around there, get off the main tourist drag if you want better food.

I don’t know La Laguna’s centre from a foodie point of view, although I’ve had plenty of tapas and cakes in the places around the main streets and never been disappointed.

You can’t visit  Santa Cruz de Tenerife without eating …

Papas Arrugadas with Mojo.

Papas arrugadas translates as wrinkled potatoes, which may sound like a bland thing to recommend, but done right they really are delicious! These
are no ordinary potatoes but special varieties of small, floury tubers, grown in the Canary Islands.

They are served with mojos, Canarian sauces made with cilantro or red peppers.

Where to Drink in Santa Cruz de Tenerife,

No one bar stands out. In Santa Cruz head for Avendia Anaga after dark to cruise the clubs and bars. During the day, shuttered up, they look abandoned, but change character completely when the lights come on.

La Laguna is a university town, so there are plenty of reasonably-priced bars all around.

Where to Stay in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Of course when you live in a place, you don’t often get to stay in hotels or hostels.

The only hotel I’ve stayed in is the very chic Iberostar Grand Mencey, which somehow blends modern, luxury minimalism with a colonial feel, and which I loved! I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

A friend stayed in city-center hotel Silken Atlantida earlier this year and pronounced it excellent too.

Markets and Shopping in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Market of Nuestra Señora de Africa for sure, to buy the best of the island’s produce bananas, tomatoes, papaya and other fruit, not to mention those
wee potatoes and yummy goats’ cheeses.

Market of Nuestra Señora de Africa

For gifts? The Canary Islands has been famous for wine since the 17th century – Shakespeare was a huge fan, no kidding. He mentions “a cup of Canary” in several of his plays!

You can also buy artisan olive oils, those mojo sauces, local honey and jams, and lotions and other beauty products made from aloe vera, which grows all over the island.

The Canary Islands have a special status within the EU. They used to be duty free, and that’s not strictly true now, but you can certainly buy perfumes, booze and tobacco cheaper than on mainland Europe, though obviously you need to check how much you can take into wherever you’re going back to.

Major Events and Festivals in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

No doubting what springs to my mind first – Carnival. It’s claimed that Santa Cruz’s Carnaval in the couple of weeks leading up to Lent is second only to Rio de Janeiro in size. It’s one long, crazy, chaotic, fun-filled party. It would take me an entire post to do it justice.

The best I can say briefly is that it is the colourful, noisy, costumed event you imagine it to be!

Other than that there is the Heineken Jazz Festival in July, which includes some free concerts.

Santa Blues – a free blues festival one weekend in June.

Santa Blues

August is a bit like one long fiesta too, when terrazas de verano (summer terraces) open. These are temporary bars which set up just for hottest weeks of the year, outdoors and with long opening hours to while away those sleepless nights.

In La Laguna there is a famous romeria, a traditional fiesta which is something like a cross between a harvest festival and May Day celebrations.

family trad dress Romeria

Folk groups, singers, dancers, farmers with their huge-eyed oxen, herds of goats, the odd goose or puppy take part, and everyone in traditional dress, including many of the onlookers.

Getting Around Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Both cities are very walkable. Although this is a mountainous island, slopes are fairly gentle, even in La Laguna, which is around 2,000 ft above sea level.

There are excellent bus services to other parts of the island, and a zillion taxis.

The two cities are connected by a modern tramway which blends surprisingly well with the historical surroundings when it passes through those areas.

Is Santa Cruz WIFI friendly?

A huge swathe of Santa Cruz city centre is actually a wifi zone set up by the town hall. You often see folk sitting in a square tapping away. La Laguna, as I said, is a university town, so facilities there are excellent too.

Best Time of Year to Visit Santa Cruz, Tenerife

In one sense – any time. Winters are very mild, shirt-sleeves by day, a jacket by night. Although La Laguna is cooler because it’s much higher, even so, the worst it gets is like an Autumn day in England, say.

If you don’t want all the noise of Carnaval avoid Shrove Tuesday week at all costs.

Low season here is May/June and November/early December and there are cheap flights around, but the trouble with low season is that sometimes you find restaurants have taken the month off.

Hottest time is late July/August/early September when temperatures can get up to 40ºC so if you don’t like it hot avoid summer. It’s also the busiest time, of course, during the school holidays.

Favourite Side Trip Away From the City

The Teide National Park absolutely! Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Park is site of the world’s third largest volcano measured from the ocean bed, at 3,713 m Mount Teide is the highest mountain in Spain and in winter you will often find it covered in snow, despite this being a sub-tropical climate.

The park’s volcanic landscapes are sensational, and although it’s pretty barren-looking, there is flora which grows nowhere else on earth in the wild. I love to see the expressions on people’s face when I take them up there. The most-used adjectives are lunar or surreal.

It’s also an interesting drive, through pine forests. Often you emerge above cloud level, to look down on clouds as you would from a plane, and see Mt Teide rising above it all – impressive.

Getting Here and Away

From Europe is pretty easy. Several low-cost airlines serve the islands now, including Easyjet, which is my favourite, from UK. From further afield it means flying into a main hub, like Madrid and then onwards to Tenerife.

Because I’m English, when I fly, say, to the US, I often stopover in England to visit friends and family. The problem with that is that I have far less baggage allowance on that last leg of the journey than on the previous one, and I’ve been caught out a few times with excess weight, whereas when I book straight
through that doesn’t happen.

Best Insider’s Tip for Travellers to  Santa Cruz

If you’re into history, inquire with the museums – they do themed walking tours, but they’re not well-known.

One takes in the length of the original ortification of the city (of which the Museum of San Cristóbal was once a part), and another La Laguna by night, beginning in the city’s museum after hours – now there’s an eerie prospect.

Tenerife‘s history is on a similar timescale and has a similar background to the Americas, so it ties in with many places across the Atlantic as well as Europe.

Even with so much to see in the cities I would definitely hire a car and visit the mountains, vineyards and villages. There are some marvellous, bars and restaurants to be found in the countryside.

I Love Santa Cruz de Tenerife because..?

It has a city feel but island charm, and it blends the historic with the contemporary beautifully.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife: attractions, beaches, weather

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island of Tenerife, which is also one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands. The area of the city is 150 km², and its population in 2019year does not exceed 208 thousand inhabitants. The government of Tenerife sits in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and every four years the city acts as a platform for the work of the Parliament.

In Spanish, the name “Santa Cruz” is interpreted as “Holy Cross”. The European history of Santa Cruz de Tenerife began in 1494, when the Andalusian commander A.F. De Lugo landed on the northeast coast of Tenerife. With the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, the local fishing village began to develop rapidly and by the 16th century had become a valuable port city. By the beginning of the 18th century, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was recognized as the main administrative center of Tenerife, and a century later – the capital of all the Canary Islands. From 19In 27, the archipelago had a second capital – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, located on the neighboring island of Gran Canaria.

Despite the huge popularity of the Canary Islands among tourists, it would be wrong to call Santa Cruz in Tenerife a prosperous resort, because most visitors choose the more southerly and western directions of the island for their vacation. Nevertheless, the city is in demand among travelers as a historical site with a number of attractive sights. Many people come here for shopping: it is not for nothing that the core of the city’s economy is the trading sector. Among other things, in the vicinity of Santa Cruz de Tenerife there are a couple of picturesque beaches and several good hotels, so the place deserves its share of tourist attention.

            Attractions and entertainment

The attractions of the capital of Tenerife include both urban historical sites and natural locations. It will take at least an hour to inspect some, while getting to know others will take only a couple of tens of minutes. What sights are worth seeing first of all?

            Central Market

One of the most visited sights of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, its Central Market, is located in a historical building of light pink color. The building was erected in the 40s. last century in a classic colonial architectural style. At the entrance you can see two curious sculptures: a boat launched by fishermen, and a woman carrying jugs on her head. Then you are greeted by a spacious arched passage inside the market, within the walls of which you will find a lot of stalls with various kinds of products.

Fresh vegetables and fruits from local farmers are sold on site at very low prices. The tourist eye is also pleased with meat rows with a rich selection of delicacies, including the famous jamon. The fish sector deserves special attention, where fresh seafood is presented, which can be tasted right here for a small fee. Cheese shops, departments with spices and sweets also offer a fairly wide range. Many tourists initially visit the central market of Santa Cruz de Tenerife solely for sightseeing purposes, but eventually leave this colorful corner with bags full of purchases.

            • Opening hours: from Monday to Saturday, the attraction is open from 06:00 to 14:00, on Sundays from 07:00 to 14:00.
            • Address: Av. de San Sebastián, 51, 38003 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

            Plaza de España

In the photo of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, you can often see another important attraction – Plaza de España. It is the main one not only in Tenerife itself, but also in the entire Canary archipelago. The object was built at 1929, and today its dimensions reach just over 5 thousand m². The main attraction of the square is the Monument to the Fallen, built here in 1944 after the Civil War. The memorial is a massive tower, built in the shape of a cross and installed on a pedestal, decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the military.

In addition, the center of the square is decorated with an artificial reservoir with a blue bottom. Every year, landscaping and decoration work is carried out here, so the place will delight you with its colorful flowering flower beds and lush green trees. It is from the Plaza of Spain that the main avenues of Santa Cruz de Tenerife originate. There are several cozy cafes on the territory, in the immediate vicinity there is a small market with souvenirs. Double-decker buses also depart from the square for sightseeing tours around the city.

            Auditorium

One of the most recognizable sights in Tenerife in Santa Cruz is the Auditorium. It is an unthinkable architectural project by engineer Santiago Calatrava, which began in 1997 and was completed in 2003. As a result, the world was presented with an ingenious structure with an incredible interweaving of lines and textures. Subsequently, the building was recognized as a great representative of postmodern architecture. To understand the grandeur of the structure, it is enough to appreciate only its roof, 100 m long and weighing 350 tons.

The Auditorium in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located off the coast on Constitution Avenue and can be seen from almost anywhere, even from the observation deck in San Andres, which is 9 km from the city. Inside the unique attraction there is a theater with two concert halls – opera and chamber. There is also a restaurant with picturesque views of the ocean coast.

            Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden of Tenerife is considered to be a striking attraction of the capital of Tenerife. The complex is spread over an area of 12 hectares and primarily specializes in the maintenance and cultivation of plants of the palm family. Surprising is the fact that earlier there was a garbage dump in the park, which was cleared and transformed into a botanical garden only thanks to the joint efforts of numerous international organizations. Today the institution’s collection is the best in Europe.

Once inside the complex, you realize how rich the palm world is. Here you will meet subtropical plants from different countries and continents – South America, Africa, Asia, etc. This is a very beautiful and well-groomed garden with a lot of observation platforms, from where picturesque panoramas of the city and the coast open up. There are benches throughout the territory, there are signs in several languages, and there are latrines. At the checkout, you can purchase a scheme of the complex, but you can also download a free guide app.

            • Opening hours: the attraction is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00 (last entry at 17:00).
            • Admission fee: adult ticket – 6 €, child ticket – 2.80 €.
            • Address: Av la Constitución, 5, 38005 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain

Historic center of San Cristobal de la Laguna

10 km west of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the tiny town of San Cristobal de la Laguna, which attracts tourists primarily with its historical center. Founded in 149In the year 6, by the conquistador A.F. de Lugo, he became the first capital of Tenerife, which is why many interesting architectural buildings were erected on its territory. The historical center of the city retains its original appearance to this day, which, of course, attracts the attention of tourists.

This Tenerife town is a combination of old churches and neat parks, cobbled streets and ancient residential buildings. Be sure to visit the city’s Cathedral, the Church of the Immaculate Conception and the Royal Temple of Cristo de La Laguna. It is pleasant to take a leisurely walk in the center, relax in one of the squares, enjoying the view of the local fountains and sculptures. It is noteworthy that the most valuable structures here are marked with tablets with their name and date of construction. In the Old Town you will find several cozy cafes and pastry shops, as well as rows of shops.

Military History Museum of the Canaries

The Military History Museum of the Canary Islands in Spain in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a real pride and one of the main attractions in Tenerife. The institution is located on the territory of the former fort and its main exhibits are devoted to the military history of the archipelago. The main exhibition of the museum tells about the famous battle of 1797, in which the Spaniards defeated the British admiral Nelson. Several dioramas of the gallery are devoted to this event, but a large part of them also covers other important historical episodes, for example, the passage of Columbus through the Canary Islands on his way to India.

Among the valuable exhibits of the museum in Tenerife you can see military equipment, weapons, armor, uniforms, orders, swords, etc. One of the most curious items in the collection was the Tiger cannon: it is believed that it was from it that the fateful shot was fired, injuring Admiral Nelson. The complex contains many copies of various ships. Here you can use the audio guide (only in English and Spanish).

            • Opening hours: from Tuesday to Friday the attraction is open from 09:00 to 15:00, Saturday and Sunday – from 10:00 to 14:00.
            • Cost of visiting: free of charge.
            • Address: Calle San Isidro, 2, 38001 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

            Church of the Immaculate Conception

Among the religious sites of Santa Cruz in Tenerife, the Church of the Immaculate Conception occupies a special place. This is an important historical monument that played a big role in the spread of the Catholic faith in the Canary archipelago. The building was erected in 1500, so the church is considered one of the oldest in Tenerife. Initially, the temple was called Santa Cruz, after which, in fact, the future capital of the island was named. However, at the beginning of the 17th century, the shrine was renamed the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

From the outside, the temple looks quite ordinary: the only thing that attracts attention here is its bell tower. But the deceptive simplicity of the external decoration is replaced by luxurious elements of the interior, decorated in the Baroque style. The main place in the church is occupied by a carved wooden altar and biblical sculptures decorating it. Inside, it is also interesting to look at the organ brought to Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the middle of the 19th century from London. The church is located near the Plaza of Spain, and you can go here for free.

            Anaga Mountains

If you are interested in the natural sights of the capital of Tenerife, we advise you to visit the Anaga mountain range. This is a great place for both car trips and hiking. On the way uphill you will have to overcome a picturesque wooded area with rare flora and fauna. There are several routes for tourists to choose from, but each of them has numerous viewing platforms that offer vivid pictures of the valleys, hills and ocean.

If you’re planning on hiking, keep in mind that even the easiest route involves an hour’s uphill climb. Be sure to bring comfortable shoes and a warm jacket, as it can be quite chilly upstairs. It is important to take into account that the Anaga National Park is divided into 3 protected areas, and to visit one of them (the trail called El Pijaral), you must obtain permission in advance on the website https://centralreservas.tenerife.es. You can walk along the rest of the trails (Ijuana and Roques-de-Anaga) without prior agreement.

            Beaches

Calling Santa Cruz de Tenerife a beach resort in Spain would be a mistake. After all, the city is a port city, and it is logical that a significant part of the coast here is occupied by the port. And if you want to arrange a beach holiday, then you will have to travel outside the capital. In the immediate vicinity of the city there are only two beaches – Las Teresitas and Las Gaviotas.

            Las Teresitas

The beach is located 9 km northeast of the city, near the village of San Andrés. The coast is distinguished by a golden sandy coating, smooth entry into the water, and the absence of strong waves. On Las Teresitas you will find all the necessary infrastructure: showers, toilets, changing rooms. It is possible to rent umbrellas and sun loungers. In the immediate vicinity of the coast there are various restaurants, there is free parking.

            Las Gaviotas

The place is located in the northeastern part of Tenerife, 14 km from the capital and 5 km from Las Teresitas beach. The local coast, hidden among the rocks, is primarily distinguished by black volcanic sand and strong waves. This is a wild beach, there is no infrastructure. Nudists are often found among vacationers here. Las Gaviotas is not in a very good location, and you can only get here by car.

            Where to stay

More than 80 hotels open their doors to tourists in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and its surroundings. But it is important to clarify that most of them are apartments and apartments, and 30% are different hotels (mainly two- and three-star hotels). There is only one 5* hotel in the city, the Iberostar Heritage Grand Mencey. Living in it in the summer will cost 113 € for two per night.

It is almost twice cheaper to rent a room in a three-star hotel. The cost of a double room in such establishments starts from 60 € per day and does not exceed 90 €. Some options include free breakfast.

But the best choice of accommodation you will find in the category “Apartments”. Santa Cruz de Tenerife offers about fifty options for apartments of different quality and location. Prices for renting rooms for two people in the high season start from 37 € and vary between 50-100 €.

            Weather and climate

The ideal months to visit the capital of Tenerife are August, September and October. This is the warmest period, when the average air temperature is not lower than 25°C, and there is practically no precipitation. At this time, you will find the most comfortable water for swimming in the ocean (23-24°C).

Rest in this part of Tenerife is quite acceptable in the period from May to July: during the day the air warms up to 21-25°C, and the water in the sea is not so cold anymore – 21-23°C. But from January to March, coming here for a beach holiday is not recommended. These are the coldest months, often accompanied by rain and strong gusts of wind.

            Useful tips

            1. If you want to get to the city’s main festival (Founding Day of the capital), we advise you to plan your visit to Tenerife at the beginning of May. Celebrations take place on the night of May 2 to 3, when local residents set tables on the streets, arrange enchanting processions in costumes, dance, sing and have fun.
            2. If one of the main components of your holiday is shopping, then visiting Santa Cruz de Tenerife is best scheduled for July-August. It is during these months that the capital’s boutiques and shops arrange grandiose sales, when goods can be purchased at a 50-70% discount.
            3. If there is not enough time for a more or less complete inspection of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it is enough to take one day. You can devote the morning to a review of architectural monuments, before lunch you can look into the Military Museum, and after that you can pay a visit to the Botanical Garden.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Canary Islands. Open left menu santa cruz de tenerife Santa cruz de tenerife where is

The capital of the island of Tenerife is the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Translated from Spanish, Santa Cruz literally means “holy cross”, the city got its name in honor of the silver holy cross of the Spanish conquistadors installed on the coast.

By Canarian standards, Santa Cruz is a very large city with more than 200,000 inhabitants. Crowded and noisy, it is unattractive from a tourist point of view, but it is still necessary to stay there for at least a few days and see a lot of interesting things.

Brazilian carnival lovers should visit the capital in February. At this time, the main holiday of the year takes place on the island, namely. Thousands of people take to the streets to celebrate the carnival every year for a week and the same number of people come to take part in this enchanting costume show.

As any capital, the capital of Tenerife has a lot of attractions. The largest is Garcia Sanabria Park. This is a real open-air botanical garden and a favorite vacation spot for locals, besides, admission to the park is absolutely free.

And in the “African market” you can buy all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits and other products, but you can visit it only in the morning.

Playa de las Teresitas, located a few kilometers from the city. The beach is known for its white sand, which was brought from the Sahara desert, palm trees and mountains that hang over the beach.

The city has a well-developed transport system: modern public transport, there are bus stops literally at every step; there is also a tram line, it can be used to get to the city of La Laguna, which is located in the neighborhood; and you can take a taxi.

Large and a huge number of small shops that can satisfy even the most demanding customers can be seen mainly in the center of the capital. Souvenirs made by local artisans can be bought at the square. There are also several open markets where you can try and buy fresh fruits and vegetables.

Although Santa Cruz de Tenerife is not a resort town, any traveler can have a great time there!

Santa Cruz de Tenerife on the map

            Santa Cruz de Tenerife
            (Spanish: Santa Cruz de Tenerife)
) is the capital of the island of Tenerife, and one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands. It has such a long name because there are quite a lot of cities with the name Santa Cruz (Holy Cross), especially in Spanish-speaking countries. But, the locals call it simply – Santa Cruz. In Russian translation, it is often called Santa Cruz.

It was in this place in 1493 that the Spanish conquistadors, after landing on the coast, erected a wooden cross on the east coast of Tenerife, hence the name of the city.

Santa Cruz is home to the Parliament of the Canary Islands, half of the ministries and boards of the government of the Canary Islands, and the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands. Santa Cruz is the residence of the President of the Canary Islands.

As already mentioned, Santa Cruz is one of the two capitals of the Canary Islands, the other is in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on the island of Gran Canaria, and these two capitals periodically replace each other in this role, and every four year, the presidential residence changes its location.

Modern Santa Cruz is the largest city on the entire island of Tenerife, its population is about 200 thousand people. The city is not particularly attractive for tourists, due to the small number of historical monuments and poor tourist infrastructure. In fact, this is an industrial city with a cargo-passenger port and roads crowded with cars, which does not really attract vacationers. In addition, within the city there are no beaches that Tenerife is so famous for.

However, if you’ve already come here, don’t worry – here, too, there is something to look at and there is where to take a walk. This and wonderful beauty Plaza de España
            and Auditorio de Tenerife
huge concert hall, fantastic shape and Obelisk de la Candelaria
, which is one of the main sculptural monuments of the city and the “Church of the Immaculate Conception” and much more. Very beautiful city market Mercado Nuestra Senora de Africa
, which sells flowers, fruits, vegetables and spices. Must visit Garcia Sanabria Park
, the largest urban park in the Canary Islands, in many ways reminiscent of a botanical garden.

And for lovers of the exotic – two monuments to the fascist dictatorship of General Franco, where else can you find something like this. This is the famous Monument to the Fallen
and a monument to General Franco himself.

And of course, it should be mentioned that the Canary Islands, due to their remoteness, have reduced sales tax, and, accordingly, lower prices for certain types of goods (alcohol, tobacco, perfumes, jewelry) compared to mainland Europe. Since we did not use these benefits, I will quote a tourist guide:
“The sophisticated “shopaholic” should go to the north of the island to the capital of Santa Cruz.” Most of the shops and boutiques are concentrated in the area of the central square of Spain.

The Canary Islands attract travelers from all over the world. The most favorite among many is Tenerife – the island of eternal spring. Resting by the sea, you should definitely set aside a day to get to know its capital – the majestic Santa Cruz de Tenerife. At first glance, it may seem that there are few sights here, but a curious tourist will discover many secrets carefully kept by the Spaniards.

In the northeastern part of Tenerife, there is not a metropolis at all, but Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Its history begins a very long time ago. And it is connected with the name of Don Alonso Fernandez de Lugo. He always dreamed of conquering the Canary Island. He wanted to feel the glory of Columbus, discovering unknown countries. One day he landed numerous troops on the island where Santa Cruz de Tenerife later arose.

The conquest was well planned. Prior to the expedition, Fernandez de Lugo received support from Seville bankers and sold his own sugar plantations. Having reached the island, he landed in the northern part. To prove the capture of the area, he immediately installed the Holy Cross, from which the name of the village of Santa Cruz came. Then the conqueror moved inland, and we will stop, consider what happened to the settlement further.

The history of the fishing village, which was not yet called Santa Cruz de Tenerife, begins at 1494 years. Then the first inhabitants settled here. Gradually, the place began to grow, expanded to the city. If not for the occasion, a number of whether he would have managed to become the capital. In 1706, a volcano woke up on the island. The raging Montaña Negra destroyed most of the buildings of the city of Garachico, which was considered the main port in Tenerife. Then Santa Cruz took his place. In 1723, it was decided to move the capital here as well. It remains to this day, although it periodically cedes its role to another city – Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Since its inception, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has never been surrendered to the enemy. The locals courageously withstood all the attacks. The coat of arms tells about victories and the desire for freedom. Three lion heads are symbols of major victories over Roberto Blake, John Jennings and Horatio Nelson. Now Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a quiet, peaceful city with about 250,000 inhabitants. By the standards of the island, it is large.

Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Residents and numerous tourists consider the carnival, which is held annually in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, to be the main attraction of the city. He has been waiting for a whole year, exactly from the day the previous one ended. It will be possible to see the spectacle lasting 2 weeks in February.

The capital gathers guests from all over the world for two weeks. The spectacle is amazing. In terms of brightness of colors, it is in no way inferior to Brazilian carnivals, except that it is a little more modest in scope. Among the main events are the election of the queen of the island, the parade of horses, the burial of the sardine.

Temples of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Anyone who visits the capital of the island can see the Holy Cross, which gave the name Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The shrine is kept in the main city temple – the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. There is a special relationship with her in the city. The locals call it the Cathedral or the Mother Church. A small chapel was opened on the site of the founding of the city at the end of the 15th century. Later it was transformed. A majestic spire appeared, visible from all corners of the city. The ashes of many figures who became famous at different times are buried here.

A little later, in the 17th century, the construction of the Church of St. Francis of Assisi began. It was built in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for almost a century. Now there are many valuable icons, paintings, sculptures.

The sights of Santa Cruz de Tenerife include the Masonic Temple. However, it will not be possible to get into it, because it has been under repair for more than two decades. Many tourists approach the building, take pictures, admire the sphinxes that adorn the facade.

City squares and main streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Walking around the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, many tourists start from the main square – Plaza de España. Previously, there was a fortress of San Cristobal. Now the majestic square, recognized as the largest on the island, is decorated with a high monument in the form of a Cross with an observation deck located at the top. There is also a beautiful fountain and a monument glorifying the defenders of Spain. The composition includes bas-reliefs, several sculptures. Adjacent to the square is the Avenue of the Duchess of St. Helena, the entrance to which is opened by an arch laid out in 1787.

Slightly fewer tourists in Candelaria Square, where the monument to St. Virgin of Canelaria is erected. Next to her are the faithful Guanches guards. There are four of them. There were the same number of angels, who for some reason were removed after another restoration.

Rambla de Santa Cruz is the central street of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. On the surface, she doesn’t stand out. On both sides there are many cozy restaurants and cafes where you can taste national dishes. It is worth going to the end to see the monument to Franco, the general who defended Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
            Modern attractions

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is growing fast. Its newly built objects are in no way inferior in beauty to those that have stood for centuries. The vanguard has reached the city. This is evidenced by a masterpiece, which has no equal in Europe. Acoustico de Tenerife is a modern concert hall built between 1997 and 2003 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The unusual shape is impressive: it seems that there is a huge sail in front of the viewer. An organ is installed here, the sound of which must be listened to. The acoustics of the hall is the best in the world, which is what its authors are proud of. The Symphony and Chamber halls are open, there is a luxurious terrace and a spacious hall.
Several museums open in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

It is proposed to visit at least one of them:
            archaeological;
            military;
            fine arts;
            contemporary art.

            Parks and squares

The capital is surrounded by greenery. Getting acquainted with the city, you need to enjoy the beauty of nature. Local parks deserve admiration:
            Palmetum – a botanical park and a garden at the same time, where 400 species of various palms brought from different countries are grown;
            La Granja is a wonderful holiday destination for children in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where many attractions are installed;
Garcia Sanabria is the central place in the city where everyone meets at the flower clock or next to the sculptures of Dr. Guigo or the mayor Garcia Sanabria.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is an amazing capital, not designed for tourist flows. It is quiet and comfortable here, so in the absence of numerous entertainment venues, you can enjoy the beauty of the capital of the island with pleasure.

We were in Tenerife before the cruise, so we didn’t consider visiting the Teide volcano. This time I was torn between a visit to the Barranco del Infierno gorge near the city of Masca and a trip to Parque Natural de Anaga in the north of the island. As a result, we chose a trip to the mountains of Anaga. We love mountain landscapes very much, and the first day could still torment my husband with a trip along mountain serpentines

We booked Opel Astra on the website cicar.com for 60.28€.
            could have taken
Opel Corsa for 55, but they were afraid that if they didn’t upgrade and give a car of the same class, then it would be difficult to drive it on mountain roads.
After last year’s trip to France, my husband already knew that you can’t take a car of the lowest class for mountain roads.
            As a result, we got
Seat Lion with automatic gearbox. She did an excellent job with her task.

Our itinerary: port – El Bailadero – Chamorga – Taganana – Bajo el Roque – Almáciga – Benijo – El Draguillo – Barranco De Afur, Tamadite – Roque Negro – Mirador Pico Del Inglés – Mirador Cruz Del Carmen – Mirador De Jardina – port. You can look it up on google.

There was also the village of Taborno on the route, but we didn’t stop because time was running out.

I liked the trip, we saw something that is rarely shown to tourists on the island.

In general, Tenerife makes you want to come back and come back. Despite its rather small size, the island has some kind of inexplicable aura of attraction.

If you are interested, there are many photos in my album on Yandex.Fotki.

            The author will be pleased!

            Excellent island of eternal spring

From Los Rodeos North airport to the capital of Santa Cruz about 15-20 kilometers. Every half an hour there is a scheduled green bus to the central city bus station. But this option did not suit us with our luggage. At the exit from the arrivals hall, a separate door with a control desk leads to the taxi. We did not have time to approach, as the manager quickly showed a taxi on the street, ready to serve us. We arrived at the Taburiente Hotel in about twenty minutes. The counter in a taxi at the landing starts counting immediately from 3 euros 20 cents. Upon arrival in the city center, 18 euros with kopecks came up.

There are no quadruple rooms in the hotel, I had to take two double rooms for 56.5 euros per day (without breakfast). Only 113 euros for two double rooms. The hotel is normal, there is a swimming pool on the roof, though the water was cool. We had a good night’s sleep, left our things in the storage room and went for a walk around Santa Cruz.

Park García Sanabria is a favorite place to relax in the city center. There are many flowerbeds, fountains, monuments, alleys, like a botanical garden. Walking around the city, we realized that we simply want to eat. We booked the hotel without breakfast… We spontaneously decide to go to the port for registration, eat on board and continue exploring the city. Taxi to the port cost 9euros, registration went through quickly.

Having tasted delicacies on the first boarding day at the hospitable AIDAsol,
again decided to go on an independent tour of the city
            Santa Cruz.
It was in the afternoon, around 3pm. All aboard at eight o’clock.
There is not much free time – about five hours. We went along the blue line through the ferry waiting room to the city, to the central square of Spain in search of a tourist bass – our main lifesaver. The price of an adult ticket is 16 euros, a child ticket is 8.5 euros.

            Russian audio guide available.
The literary text is normal, the voice of the announcer without an accent.
The interval frequency is 30 minutes.
The total duration of the trip is 1 hour.

What a different city it turned out to be
            Holy Cross on the island
            Tenerife.
House-palaces in the colonial style in the city center.

Glass new building on the former wastelands-outskirts with its twin towers.
            Narrow streets, tunnels, parks.
Unpretentious box houses crawling along the slopes of the mountains.

While exploring the city from the height of the second floor of the tourist bass
we were overtaken by the tramway Tramvia, which connects

            port with town
La Laguna (San Cristobal de La Laguna),
the former capital of the island. The idea was born to ride today and in La Laguna.
The light rail terminus is next to the Auditorio.
There is a large transport hub with a bus station
            intercambiador,
from where buses go to all sides of the island.

We boarded the tram at the Fundacion stop closest to Plaza de España.
It is the second in a row from the Intercambiador bus station.
            Tickets (1 euro 35 cents)
            sold at vending machines.

            B
La Laguna from La Trinidad terminus to the historic center
two hundred or three hundred meters along the pedestrian zone.

Near the terminus of the tram in La Laguna “La Trinidad”
many small shops with good discounts.
            Here we are fully stocked!
            Shoe sizes matched.
6 (six) euros for a pair of boots
Well, where did you see this…
Any shopaholic can get a nervous breakdown at these prices.

Historic center of the former capital of the island – La Laguna (San Cristobal de La Laguna)
gives the impression of peace and tranquility.
Here life flows slowly as usual, even tourists here are not always in a hurry (like us),
and relaxed, enjoying the evening gatherings to the chords of the guitar. I did not want to leave La Laguna, but it was time to return to the port.

Upon returning a week later in Santa Cruz, we booked the Silken Atlantida 4 * hotel for 2 nights – 52 euros (without breakfast) for a standard room. The hotel is really worth it! I recommend it before a cruise.

Taxi at the port was rented for the whole day until 20.00 pm according to the following program: luggage unloading at the hotel, trip to the Teide National Park to the cable car. There, the wait is two hours until we get to the crater. Then a trip to the water park “Siam” on the other most southern end of the island of Tenerife. There again waiting – a couple of hours before the closing of the water park. And return to the port capital of Santa Cruz to our hotel. According to the speedometer, this circle around the island is about 200 kilometers, for about as many euros they bargained with the driver.

The trip through the Teide National Park, up to an altitude of more than 2000 meters to the foot of the volcano, took place in the struggle with sleep, as at the beginning we were driving through a wooded part where eucalyptus grew. This special healing-intoxicating smell of equilipt lulls you better than any lullaby. It’s good that the observation decks here are so frequent that they stopped at all the miradors about a dozen times, dispersing sleep. We climbed above the clouds along the western part of the island and saw the towns of Orotrava and Puerto de La Cruz from above. The weather was clear and our eyes opened two neighboring islands – La Gomera and La Palma.

The central and main point of the serpentine road through the Teide National Park is the bottom station of the cable car to the Teide crater. The slope of the volcano is so steep that there is no road to the crater (no serpentines will help),
and besides, the volcano has been declared a natural monument by UNESCO, where any construction is prohibited.

This is a site at about 2500 meters above sea level. The cable car TELEFERICO DEL TEIDE lifts tourists up another kilometer to 3555 meters. The rest is a little less than two hundred meters to the finish 3718 meters on foot along the beaten path.

The ticket price for the cable car to the Teide crater (round-trip) is insane, robbery in broad daylight. 25 euros per adult and 12.5 euros per child. More expensive only for the Sicilian Etna – there is generally skinning – 60 euros from the nose.

The ascent and descent by cable car is also a tourist attraction. There are stunning views. At the top there are many signs and information stands of the highest miradors in the Canary Islands. There are three observation decks near the crater, on different sides of the island. Volcanic landscapes are quite Martian.

To get to the crater, you need to show the caretaker at the upper station of the cable car “avizo” – a free permit to visit the Teide peak. We didn’t have it, but under the guise of a photo shoot, we “freely” passed the Rubicon.

The weather was so clear that from the other side of the Teide Peak we managed to photograph another island – Gran Canaria!

Having made almost a record number of photographs of all the visited volcanoes on Teide, we hurried down to the lower station of the cable car. There we were given a “Certificate of Visiting the Teide Volcano”. The photo shows that in vain they neglected the advice to smear sunscreen in the mountains. Tan to the face stuck instantly! Well, everything suits the scoundrel …

And here we are at our next destination – SIAM PARK. The ticket price is 33 euros, but it is more profitable to buy a double ticket for two parks:
SIAM + LORO for 56 euros.

The only bummer – the schedule on our day was shortened to 17.00. And we hoped that until 19.00 (as in the high season). On the clock – half past four. For the sake of an hour and a half to give such an expensive price … The toad choked for about five minutes, but I really wanted to. We went and not in vain. There were practically no queues and we managed to ride on all the rides several times.

The mood after extreme water procedures in the water park was 120 points on a hundred-point scale.

The stereotype about the Canary Islands as a warm paradise place, where Europeans warm their bones and get relaxation in the winter-spring time is the purest TRUTH!

The very south of Tenerife, where the tourist enclaves of Las Americas and Los Cristianos are located – only here you can find “bounty – heavenly delight”. Local territorial miracle! In the port of Santa Cruz it can rain and strong winds can blow, in the Teide mountains there is snow, and in Las Americas there is warm water and hot sand.

There are breakwaters here that dampen the ocean waves, and the ocean water on the shallow shore quickly warms up to comfortable temperatures.

The most popular beach here among the party youth is MONKEY BEACH. Here, from evening to morning, non-stop, there is an open-air disco for many hours with hit DJs and go-go performances with freaks.

Oh, it’s a pity – I didn’t immediately think of taking a post-cruise hotel not in the cold-windy port Santa Cruz, but in the party-warm Las Americas. After the water park, we could have stayed here on the beach to relax, and so we just did another photo shoot “Me and a palm tree” on MONKEY BEACH – the warmest beach in the Canaries.

So, those who want to stay for a couple of days in Tenerife after the cruise, choose hotels in the south of the island, near MONKEY BEACH in Las Americas. Of course, it is far from the northern port – 60 kilometers, but the “heavenly pleasure” costs extra money for the transfer. But the water park is nearby. By the way, the continuation of the banquet in the water park on the second day costs – 10 euros, upon presentation of yesterday’s ticket. That is, a two-day entrance to the water park costs 43 euros.

P.S. In fact, the beach is called PLAYA DE TROYA (a triple beach consisting of three small coves separated by breakwaters), and MONKEY BEACH CLUB is the name of the club that hosts discos of the same name. But it is precisely the name MONKEY BEACH that has taken root and now everyone knows where it is.

The next evening after disembarking at 19.30 we bought AirEurope tickets from Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) to Barcelona. I specially took such tickets so that I could devote another whole day of light to rest (excursions) on the island. The plans included visiting the bird zoo with the LORO PARQUE dolphinarium, which is located in the town of Puerto de la Cruz on the west coast of Tenerife, 30 kilometers from the capital.

Buses 102 and 103 depart from the central bus station in Santa Cruz every half an hour according to the schedule. Ticket price – 5 euros.

Our hotel was well located – just one block from the bus station, 5 minutes walk. The largest network shopping center El Corte Inglas was built near the bus station. The day before, we bought a lot of cuts, sauces, etc. in the grocery supermarket. For dinner, for breakfast, and even left what to take with you to Loro Parque for a lunch snack.

Arrived in 40 minutes. From the final stop of the intercity bus to Loro Park, a twenty-minute walk along the promenade.
Pointers will not let you get lost. For those who do not like hiking, a tourist train runs along the embankment.

The air temperature at noon warmed up to 29 degrees Celsius. Local beaches are gradually filled with vacationers. There is an ocean wave and some water compared to Las Americas is cooler.

For very inquisitive tourists who prefer to hear additional information from the lips of guides and guides in Loro Park, there is a paid option “Discovery Tour”, lasting 1 hour 45 minutes and costing 10 euros. And if it weren’t for Aleksey, the host of the discovery tour in Loro Park, our impressions would have been only contemplative, but they also turned out to be meaningful. Thanks to him, we learned a lot of interesting things about the backstage of Loro Parque.

In addition, when Alexei heard that we wanted to leave the Discovery Tour earlier, as we needed to return to Santa Cruz to the hotel for luggage, and then to the northern airport for check-in, he offered to stay until the end of the Discovery Tour. tour” and then use his transfer. So lucky, so lucky! Another transport problem solved itself. We even arrived at the airport check-in much earlier.

Loro Park on the island of Tenerife

This island is unique in its natural beauty and most of the cruisers go towards the Teide volcano. But we decided to dedicate this day to our twelve-year-old son. It was decided – we are going to Loro Park for the whole day. To do this, we need to get to the town of PUERTO DE LA CRUZ on the west coast of Tenerife, 30 kilometers from the capital.

There are two options for bringing the body to the park. The first is a taxi. And the second is a shuttle bus. Buses No. 102 and No. 103 depart from the Santa Cruz Central Bus Station every half an hour. Ticket price – 5 euros. In order to spend more time in the park, we decided to go there by taxi, and back, no longer in a hurry, by bus.

It’s quite a long drive… We cross the whole island. The road is wide and fast. Somewhere in the middle of the way, the taxi driver offers to stop at the mirador – to take a picture. From here you have a beautiful view of the Teide volcano.

LORO PARK is open daily from 8:30 to 18:45. Entrance fee to the park: adult – 33 euros, children (under 11 years old) – 22 euros. Park website: http://www. loroparque.com/default.aspx

At the entrance we buy a branded yellow baseball cap for 1 euro. Taking pictures with two cockatoos. Photos can be picked up at the exit from the park. Price – 8 euros.

As soon as you cross the threshold of the park, you immediately find yourself in a green, blooming paradise.

Four types of performances take place every day in different parts of Loro Parque: seals, dolphins, killer whales and parrots. Each – several times.

            Fur seal show 09:30 | 12:30 | 14:15 | 15:30 | 17:00
            Dolphin show 11:00 | 13:00 | 14:45 | 16:00 | 17:30
            Killer whale show 11:45 | 13:45 | 15:15 | 16:30
            Parrot show 10:30 | 11:30 | 12:30 | 14:00 | 15:00 | 16:00 | 17:00
All performances are approximately 30 minutes long.

In general, the word “most” will always accompany you during your visit to Loro Parque. The penguinarium “Penguin Planet” is no exception – the largest in the world. 180 birds gathered under its roof, for which a special cannon fires 12 tons of snow every day.

Everything is thought out to the smallest detail. To prevent people from crowding, a moving tape was made. You stand on it … and at low speed you go around the entire penguinarium in a circle.

It is very good that you can watch penguins both on the ice floe and underwater. I would never have thought they were so smart. They float like torpedoes.

At 11 o’clock we watched the dolphin show.

And at 12:00 killer whale show. It deserves attention just because not every zoo can afford them. These animals moved to permanent residence in Loro Park from the USA relatively recently – in 2006. And immediately took pride of place on its logo in the form of a large tail drawn between a dolphin and a parrot.

By the arrival of the most human-friendly predators, a new arena has been built, adequate to their size. The pool has a diameter of 120 m and holds 22.5 million liters of sea water!

If you want to watch killer whales from the front rows, take care of a cape in advance (3 €, sold here). Otherwise, you will have to walk around the park wet for the rest of the time. “Dangerous” places are marked with appropriate stickers. By the way, there are no two identical shows even during the day: killer whales are capricious, so trainers adjust to their mood.

Do not miss the aquarium building: it is located near the exit. There, in addition to the many sea and river inhabitants, you will be pleased with the glass tunnel with sharks swimming right over your head. The aquarium in Loro Park is worthy.

Tigers, chimpanzees, jaguars, a couple of sloths, a flock of flamingos, a family of adorable meerkats, crocodiles and huge turtles live in the imposing territory of Loro Park, surrounded by lush tropical vegetation.

Meerkats, it seemed to me, are the most favorite among the children. Watching them is a pleasure. Funny animals. Danila was barely dragged away from them.

Somehow the time has passed imperceptibly and it’s time for us to leave. A taxi driver was already waiting for us at the exit. We reached Santa Cruz without incident.

It can be seen that this is a large and modern city. Apparently, we will have to come here at least once in any way, since apart from Loro Parque we have not seen anything.

We still had a couple of hours to spare, we walked a bit around the city in the port area.

            A successful day in Tenerife!

In Tenerife, I really wanted to go to Loro Parque. The friend didn’t mind. I knew before the cruise that you can take a regular bus, for a long time. We found a married couple from Yaroslavl on the ship, who were knocked out for a taxi ride. The price at the berth is fixed – 50 EUR. For four it is quite normal, because. the bus costs 5.

We arrived in 50 minutes, we also made a couple of stops for photos with beautiful views. Uncle the driver was hospitable. He immediately offered to take us back, but we did not know how long it would take us, incl. refused. Then he offered to call him on his cell, like – Walk as much as you want, I’ll drive up at the right time. Deal.

The park is amazing! This is amazing! Handsome, very well maintained. It is immediately evident that it is kept with love. We managed to do all the shows, though running and running. First, the dolphin show at 11:00, they ran from it to the killer whale show at 11:45, then the fur seal show at 12:30. Parrot show at 14:00. They walked around the entire park. I really liked the penguinarium. And you don’t need to go to Antarctica!

So imperceptibly 4 hours flew by in the park. Called the driver, arrived in 15 minutes. Apparently somewhere here taxied.

Approaching the city, they asked us to drop us off at the Auditorio de Tenerife building. In half an hour we just reached the port along the embankment through the beautiful Plaza de Espana.

A successful day in Tenerife! And the weather was wonderful, a little cloudy, 20 degrees. It is a pity that we did not have time to go to the town of La Laguna, everyone likes it.

            Cruise date – February 2010

            Liner:

            beautiful volcanic island

Traveled around the island in a rented car. IMHO, the best option! In the northwest of Tenerife, there are the remains of an old volcano, which centuries of erosion has turned into a very picturesque mountain range.

In the center of it is the village of Masca, to which a serpentine road leads. Let me tell you right now – not for the faint of heart! But beautiful!

In the center of the island, one of the most massive island volcanoes in the world, Mount Teide, proudly rises, the last eruption of which was only a couple of hundred years ago, that is, just about by geological standards! The peak itself is quite good, even a cable car leads to its top, up to a height of 3600 meters.

The Teide offers sweeping views of a barren world of rust-red craters and black lava flows framed by fluffy ocean clouds. The cold at the top in winter is terrible there, it often snows and the wind just knocks you down!

Molten lava flows, cooling down and shrinking, formed bizarre patterns of cracks. Over time, erosion exposes the basalt and local tourism departments are happy to “unwind” new attractions. Let’s say this miracle of nature is positioned as a “stone rose”…

An undoubted and somewhat unexpected advantage of Tenerife turned out to be that the slopes of the volcanoes are overgrown with a gorgeous pine forest, which is very nice to walk through! There are also steep climbing trails to choose from, as well as gentle foresters’ roads traversing the slopes.

In general, the Canary Islands, by Spanish standards, do not shine with the delights of architecture, and the coast is often ugly, functional and overpopulated. But there are also quite nice places in the old colonial style. In Tenerife, I can recommend La Orotava.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The capital of the Canary Islands

BRIEF INFORMATION ABOUT THE CAPITAL OF THE CANARY ISLANDS

The capital of the archipelago (Canary Islands) Santa Cruz de Tenerife is located in the northeast of Tenerife and is tightly surrounded by the Anaga mountain system.

History of the capital of Tenerife

Founded the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the 15th century on the site where the first Spaniards landed. They were far from tourists, and pursued very specific goals. The empire needed to expand its own territories. A wooden cross was erected at the landing site of the Spaniards, and this became a historical place and a starting point in the growth of the future capital of the Canary Islands. Years passed and Santa Cruz turned from a small port town into a modern metropolis, with many narrow streets in the old center, large squares and green park areas. And of course with gorgeous beaches and developed tourist infrastructure.

The most port city of the island

Even the conquistadors noted the favorable geopolitical position of the future capital of the island, in their time Santa Cruz de Tenerife became the most important port. Moreover, in our time it is considered the third largest and most important port in Spain. It is an important logistics hub in transcontinental trade routes, connecting Europe with Africa and America. Every day in the port of Santa Cruz you can see ships flying the flags of various countries of the world. Small tourist ferries, as well as giant ocean liners, also stop here.

            Attractions Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Of course, the capital of Tenerife does not reach the title of a metropolis: the whole city can be easily walked. Let’s take a walk through the very center of the city and learn about the main attractions of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. All of them are concentrated mainly near the Plaza de España. The central place on the Plaza de España is occupied by a memorial in memory of the bloody Civil War of 36-39 of the last century. Not far from the square is the Church of St. Francis, built in the 17th century. Another of the attractions of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is worth paying attention to the church of Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, dating from the 16th century. Inside it is stored the same wooden cross erected by the first Spanish settlers, and this is not only a symbol of the capital, but of all the Canary Islands. Walking to Plaza Candelaria, you will reach the main pedestrian street of the capital – Calle Castillo. It is full of tourist and commercial life with shops, restaurants and cafes. Nearby is the central market of the city: Mercado de Nuestra señora de Africa. Here you can buy fresh products for dinner or try ready meals. Despite the fact that it is far to the east, local sellers are not averse to haggling.

Museums of the capital of Tenerife

If you have a free moment, be sure to visit the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Here is a unique collection of household items of the Guanches – the indigenous population of the Canary Islands. These include mummies found in the caves of the island, tools for agriculture, weapons, household items, household utensils, jewelry and much more. From the weapons of the Guanches, let’s move on to more recent times and look at the collection presented at the Military Museum of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Armor, weapons from the time of the conquistadors and more modern types of weapons. The museum also has a truly unique specimen: according to legend, it is here that the cannon is located, from which the hand of the famous Admiral Nelson was torn off by a shot. Whoever comes to the Canary Islands with a sword will be left without a hand. We will move from weapons to the world of art and go to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Nature. Each of them has something to see and make an impression of the cultural life of the island, as well as the flora and fauna.

            Modern symbols of the city

Of course, this is a little strange, but this makes the Auditorio Tenerife Opera building, built in 2003, even more mysterious and attractive. The Canarian twin towers look interesting, reaching more than 100 meters into the sky. Out of time in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, another symbol is the largest park in the entire archipelago – Garcia Sanabria. Its area is more than 67 thousand square meters. m. True, I must say that the capital of Tenerife is a very green city in itself. Trees grow on every street in the city.

            Carnival de Tenerife

Once a year, in February or March, the capital of Tenerife hosts the carnival, which is considered one of the largest and most colorful in Europe. Especially for the holiday in Santa Cruz, residents of all the islands and Europeans come, and not just to see the action, but also to take an active part in it. At first glance, it seems that the carnival is a fun and unpretentious pastime, but in fact, preparations for it take many months. The holiday begins with the choice of the carnival queen, after which the traditional parade of horses takes place, and therefore the most stormy fun begins. Tenerife Carnival is even called the little Rio for the similarity of colors and atmosphere. But it is worth saying that the Brazilian carnival – Canary, is inferior in scale.

            Beach capital

To the east of the capital is the village of San Andres, where the most popular and largest beach of this area of the island is located. Tourists from Europe and the inhabitants of the islands come here to bask in the sun, basking on the white sand. By the way, the sand here is real – from the Sahara desert. In 1973, it was brought here in incredible quantities.
In the suburbs of the capital there are several diving clubs, and dives are designed for both beginners and seasoned divers. The underwater landscape is very beautiful and rich: coral reefs, underwater caves and even a real sunken ship. But it’s better not to go there, as local underwater inhabitants have been living there for a long time: sharks, rays and barracudas.

In the vicinity of the capital

The capital of the Canary Islands is also the starting point of various tourist routes. From here, a journey starts for everyone who wants to conquer the highest point of Anaga – a mountain range, at the foot of which the village of San Andres is located. To the north of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the first capital of the island – the town of La Laguna, which, although it has lost the official status of the capital, is behind the scenes the cultural capital.
