Exploring the beautiful landscapes of Tenerife
15 awesome things to do in Tenerife
Explore Teide National Park
Mount Teide is an active volcano in Tenerife. Its peak is at 3,715 metres, making it the highest post in Spain and one of the tallest volcanoes in Europe. No visit to Tenerife would be complete without a visit to Mount Teide.
Teide National Park covers a surface area of 190km squared, and encompasses a vast variety of landscapes. If you love hiking, you need to dedicate at least a couple days exploring the beauty of this volcano.
Teide tours worth checking out:
Mount Teide: Cable Car Ticket – This is the standard cable car entrance for those who want to see the peak of Mount Teide.
From Playa de las Americas: Full-Day Teide Jeep Safari – For the most adventurous who want to properly explore all of Teide National Park!
Tenerife Teide National Park Stargazing – When you’re 3,700m above all light pollution sources, you can rest assured that the night sky views are incredible!
Hiking in Teide National Park, Tenerife
One of the most popular hikes is without a doubt Roque de García. This is a 3.5km circular trail, with a 170m elevation change.
The trail is well marked and easy to walk on, making it a fairly easy hike for all levels. It will take maximum 2 hours to do.
Sitting at 2,000 metres, this hike has excellent views of the summit of Mount Teide, as well as the surrounding rocky landscape. There are unique rock formations dotted all alongside the trail, which ensure the views never get boring.
The start of the Roque de Garcia trail, with the Teide peak in the back, Tenerife
The incredible rocky landscapes of Teide National Park
Another must-see hike is the one at Mirador de Sámara. Despite being at a similar height as Roque de García, the landscape and views here are completely different.
This hike is famous because of the distinctive view of the pine trees growing out of the black lava field, with the summit of Mount Teide on one side and the view over the sea on the other.
The trail is around 10km long, with an elevation change of 400m and takes around 2.5 hours. It was unlike anything I had ever seen, and one of the things that fascinated me most about Tenerife.
On almost every Spain bucket list you will also find visiting the summit of Mount Teide. Standing at 3,700 metres, high above the clouds with views of the sea and surrounding islands is an experience like no other.

Go hiking in the Parque Rural de Anaga
The Parue Rural de Anaga is without a doubt one of the best places to visit in Tenerife. The natural landscape here is completely different from the south of the island and from the areas surrounding Mount Teide.
Here you will find a jagged green coastline, with dramatic peaks and cliffs directly over the sea.
I spent much of my time exploring Anaga playing the soundtrack of Jurassic Park in the background, and once you get here, it will be easy to see why.

The panoramic views and mountains of Parque Rural de Anaga
There are lots of hiking trails in Anaga, which will allow you to thoroughly explore this part of Tenerife. My personal favourite is the one leading to the Semaforo of Igueste.
Starting at the small town of Igueste, this 4.5km trail has spectacular views everywhere you look. The hike is very steep (470m gain) and will take around 2.5 hours.
During the hike you will be able to admire the steep green mountains on one side, and the sea on the other.
The white houses of Igueste are perched along the mountainside, creating a beautiful contrast with the lush green vegetation.
Enjoying the view while hiking at the Semaforo of Igueste
There are lots of gorgeous hikes also on the northern coast of Tenerife, such as the ones at Roque de Taborno and Benijo. You can find all the hike specifications on the official Tenerife tourism website.
Whatever hike you choose, make sure to pack your hiking essentials and be ready for a fun day exploring stunning natural landscapes!

Relax at Playa de las Teresitas
There are many beautiful beaches all over the island, but Playa de las Teresitas was without a doubt one of my favourites.
Located in the north of the island, beyond Santa Cruz de Tenerife and nestled along the coastline of Anaga, it’s one of the most scenic beaches I’ve ever seen.
Playa de las Teresitas is 1.3km long and 80m wide, meaning there is plenty of space to go around! The beach is characterised by white sand, turquoise water and the dramatic cliffs of Anaga that surround it.
There is a viewpoint over the beach that I highly recommend visiting when you go there, as it will allow you to really admire the beauty and size of Playa de las Teresitas.
You can pair a visit to Playa de las Teresitas with one of the hikes in the Parque Rural de Anaga. After spending a few hours hiking and observing the beautiful views, you can relax on this white sand beach and cool down in the clear turquoise sea.

Enjoy the waves at Playa de Benijo
On the northern coast of Tenerife, also nestled amongst the cliffs of the Parque Rural de Anaga, you will find Playa de Benijo. Playa de Benijo is a black sand beach, surrounded by steep cliffs.
This beach is famous for its scenic surrounding and huge waves. You can usually find children (and adults alike) jumping in the waves, and others relaxing and tanning on the black sand.
It has a wilder and more rugged feeling than Playa de las Teresitas, and it’s the perfect place for a relaxing stop after a hike on the northern side of Anaga.

Learn to surf in Las Americas
Surfing in Tenerife was one of my absolute favourite things to do. I had previously been surfing in Bali, Fuerteventura and Costa Rica, but the surf in Tenerife was especially good.
Here you can find consistent waves for all levels. Playa Las Americas is the main surf spot, but as a beginner, I often found it too crowded and too close to the rocky reef for my liking.
I took regular classes with Surf Life Tenerife, and I loved that they always take you surfing to a different spot just along the coast. Here the waves are smaller, the reef isn’t as close and it’s nowhere near as busy.

Admire the view from Mirador Cruz del Carmen
As you may have guessed there are many gorgeous views all over Tenerife, but Mirador Cruz del Carmen deserves a special mention. Located on the outskirts of Anaga, you can combine this viewpoint with some easy hiking trails.
From the main parking area and tourist information desk you can do two easy trails that go through the surrounding laurel forests, and admire the view over the valley below.
On clear days you can see also the Teide summit. When I was visiting it had recently snowed on the Teide peak, which created the beautiful contrast you see in the photo below!

Discover the village of Masca
Masca is one of the most unique places in Tenerife, and one you simply must visit while you’re on the island. This small mountain village is nestled amongst the Macizo de Teno mountains, and offers views like no other.
It was originally a Guanche settlement, before Spain took conquered the Canary Islands, and is now home to around 90 inhabitants.
The road to reach it is very narrow and with numerous bends, but the view while driving are well worth the slight motion sickness you might get!
There are a number of viewpoints that you can stop at while driving, to better admire the surrounding mountains and small town of Masca.
Once you reach the town itself you can spend some time walking around, soaking in the calm beauty of Masca.

Explore the Teno mountains
Located on the north-western side of the island, the Teno mountain range often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Here you will find many incredible hikes, views and cute towns.
We did a hike with Anaga Experience in the Teno mountains and despite the cloudy weather, it was a great experience.
Starting in Teno Alto we hiked for 10km all the way down to the Punta Teno lighthouse, crossing all sorts of different landscapes throughout the hike. The Punta de Teno hike has an elevation change of 900m, but it’s mostly all downhill.
Once we reached the bottom we even went for a swim in the sea, it was much needed after the long trek! Other popular hikes in Teno are those surrounding Masca.
For the proper trekking lovers, you can do an awesome Teno Mountains half-day hike to Masca.

Admire the cliffs of Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes is a town on the west coast of Tenerife, famous for the huge cliffs that surround it.
The Acantilados de Los Gigantes are giant rock formations that reach up to 500-800 metres in height, towering above the sea and town.
Los Gigantes means “The Giants”, an apt name! There is a beautiful viewpoint just before reaching the town, where you can enjoy the view over the cliffs and sea.
There is also a small beach in town, where you can relax while enjoying the surrounding scenery of Los Gigantes.
A popular way to admire Los Gigantes is from the sea; there are many boat tours that will take you sailing along the coast of Los Gigantes. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some whales and dolphins!

Join a whale watching catamaran cruise
Doing a whale watching cruise is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Tenerife, which is why it’s such a popular Tenerife shore excursion.
I didn’t get round to doing one until after a year of being in Tenerife, and I wish I’d done it sooner! Did you know that Tenerife was the first place to be nominated Whale Heritage Site in Europe?
Thanks to the warm weather and water all year round (even in winter!) and the conformation of the seabed between Tenerife and La Gomera, here you’re almost guaranteed to spot whales and dolphins.
When I did the whale watching cruise they told me there was a 99% chance to spot whales and 60% to spot dolphins, pretty good odds if you ask me!
Whale watching boat tours worth checking out:

Dolphin & Whale Eco-Cruise with Food & Drinks – An environmentally friendly experience with dolphins, food and drinks, what more can you ask for?

Visit San Cristobal de la Laguna
San Cristobal de la Laguna, commonly known as just La Laguna, is a city in the northern part of Tenerife. It used to be the capital city of the island, and even if it no longer holds that title, it’s still a must-see in Tenerife.
The historical centre of the city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
You can easily spend a few hours walking around the historical centre, admiring the colonial architecture and feeling like you stepped back in time.

Go paragliding!
For the real adrenaline junkies out there, this is a must-do bucket list activity! The mountains of Tenerife make for excellent set off spots, and the views are second to none.
You set off from the tall Jurassic Park style mountains, soaring high above the trees and rock formations, flying towards the sea.
Paragliding is always a thrilling experience, but with such a gorgeous landscape it becomes even more special.

Go to a beach bar for sunset drinks
While the stunning natural landscapes and fun activities are what made me fall in love with Tenerife, the sense of normalcy that comes with enjoying drinks on the beach at sunset is one of the things I’m craving the most, and can’t wait to go back to.
The west coast of Tenerife is lined with fun beach bars, for all sorts of budgets and tastes. Some have a more club and dancing vibe, while others have a more laid back and chilled surfer vibe.
Some of my favourites were Roca Negra Sunset Club and Coqueluche Beach Bar. Here you can sip on a mojito while nibbling tasty snacks, and watching the sun set in the ocean.

Taste the local cuisine
Spanish cuisine is amongst my favourite in the world, and in Tenerife there are plenty of restaurants where you can taste it. I especially love tapas and pinchos, since with their little dishes they allow you to taste lots of different plates in one meal.
Some of my favourite restaurants in Tenerife were El Jardin de la Abuela and La Cuevita del Mar. You can try all the traditional Canarian dishes like papas arrugadas, pimientos del padron and almogrote cheese.
Eating delicious Canarian food after a long day of exploring Tenerife, hiking or surfing is the perfect ending for a day in Tenerife. I can’t wait to go back to Tenerife and taste the flavoursome Canarian cheeses again.
An awesome platter of fresh fish that we had at Delicias del Mar in Tenerife
Hike the Rambla de Castro trail
This coastal walk was amongst my favourite trails in Tenerife. With its steep cliffs and palm trees, Rambla de Castro will give you some serious Bali vibes.
You can also hike down to Playa de Castro, a black rock beach surrounded by tall cliffs. Here you will also find a waterfall that you can stand under and cool down, it’s easily one of the most scenic waterfalls I’ve ever seen!
There isn’t much elevation and the path is well kept and easy to walk along. It’s a fairly easy hike with stunning coastal views, which I think should feature on any Tenerife bucket list.
Enjoying the coastal views during the Rambla de Castro hike

Visit the natural pools of Garachico
Given the rocky coastline and powerful sea of Tenerife, it shouldn’t surprise you that there are countless natural pools all over the island. My personal favourites were the natural pools of Garachico.
Located in the town of Garachico, the Piscinas Naturales de El Caleton are natural salt-water rock pools that you can swim in. There are also man made additions where you can sun bathe and chill between swims.
Personally I really enjoyed these pools as we were visiting on a day when the sea was very big, and we spent the afternoon diving in the huge waves and playing in the current.

Where to stay in Tenerife
When deciding where to stay in Tenerife, you need to take into account your personal preferences. Tenerife is an incredibly varied island, which can accommodate many different type of travellers.
If you’re a young traveller looking to party and meet new people you would have more fun staying in Las Americas, if you’re a family looking for a peaceful beach holiday you will prefer Costa Adeje, or if you’re a hiking fan you would probably prefer staying in Puerto de la Cruz or La Laguna.
However it’s always handy to remember that Tenerife is a small island, and regardless of where you’re staying you can easily drive around the whole island in around one hour.
So while you might prefer staying close to the lively nightlife of Las Americas, you could be hiking up Mount Teide after just a 1.5 hour drive.

I listed below some accommodation options for every budget in different parts of the island.
Budget: Banana Surf House – This cute surf house is perfect for those looking for a cosy stay in a great location, without breaking the bank. It also has a huge rooftop with great sea views.

Mid-range: El Dorado Residence – I spent my first two months in Tenerife in an apartment in this residence, and loved every day of it. My apartment was spacious, in a great location (close to both the beach and supermarket) and had awesome sea and sunset views. I can highly recommend it.

Luxury: Hotel Rural La Correa Del Almendro – This hotel is set in a traditional Canarian barn from the 1720s, and it still retains the rugged look, while having modern comforts like a pool. Final thoughts on the top things to do in Tenerife
There you have it, the ultimate compilation of best things to do in Tenerife! I hope you find this guide useful in planning your trip to Tenerife, and that it has inspired you to head straight to the island once we’ll be able to travel freely again!
Spain has always been one of my favourite countries in Europe. I spent time in Barcelona, Seville and many of the Canary Islands, but Tenerife has a special place in my heart.
Thanks to the huge variety of landscapes and things to do, you never run the risk of being bored. Even after spending two months living there, I always found a new hiking trail or surf spot I hadn’t yet explored.
With its warm temperatures it’s one of the best winter sun spots in Europe, and a place that I absolutely adored living in for a winter.
So while Spain is without a doubt on my mind, it’s mostly Tenerife I’m thinking about, and I can’t wait to go back there!
This post was brought to you as a result of the #SpainOnMyMind campaign, created and managed by iambassador in partnership with the Spain Tourist Office. Greta’s Travels maintains full editorial control of the content published on this site.

Most people come to Tenerife seeking sun and sand in the south, but there are so many other parts of the island to discover. As the largest and most geographically diverse of the Canaries, there are endless fun things to do in Tenerife.
From stunning mountains hikes to stargazing over volcanoes, be sure to add some of these top Tenerife activities to your itinerary.
Getting around Tenerife
Before I tell you about all the amazing Tenerife attractions, you should know that getting around without a car can be a challenge.
If you want to visit many places, I highly recommend renting a car for at least a portion of your trip – especially if you plan to travel between the north and south.
There are buses in Tenerife that go between most places, but they are time-consuming. Traveling between the north and south on the express bus takes almost two hours, and you’ll still likely need to make transfers for where you actually want to go. It’s not impossible, but it’s going to add a considerable amount of time to your day.
Otherwise, many of the tours recommended include pickup, so that’s another way to get around without a car. Still, there’s no better way to see the island than with your own vehicle. Is there anything better than the freedom of a road trip?
Car rentals in Tenerife vary considerably between rental agencies. To find the best price, look on Discover Cars which quickly searches all car rental agencies to find you the best deal.

Arco de Tajao
The landscapes in Tenerife are a dream for photos. From the black-sand beaches to lava-carved forests and snowy top of Mount Teide; there are so many different scenes to explore here. You’ll definitely want some beautiful vacation photos to take home with you!
While I used to rely on my friends or those around me for photos, I’ve realized the value of getting them done by a local, professional photographer.
They know all the best spots for photos and can take stunning pictures of you in several locations, so you can then just enjoy the rest of your trip without worrying about trying to capture everything.
I did a Tenerife photoshoot with Andy Cannon, a UK photographer based between Tenerife and Barcelona. He knows the island quite well and can take you to some really unique places in Tenerife that you wouldn’t otherwise find on your own.
During our photoshoot, we went to Arco de Tajao, a fascinating natural arch formation in the east side of the island.
It’s one of those landscapes in Tenerife that made me feel although I had been transported to another continent!
Aside from showing you the best spots on the island, Andy is a joy to work with.
He’ll talk with you first to understand the look and feel of the images you want and then combine those ideas with the stunning natural landscapes of Tenerife. He’s a visual storyteller, and you’ll end up with some breathtaking images to remember your time in Tenerife (or even use professionally).
As a reader, you can get an extra 5% off and 5 extra photos if you book a shoot with Andy. Just mention my name or Explore with Lora when you reach out to him.

Things to do in Tenerife South
Whale watching Tenerife
Tenerife does not have much going on in terms of wildlife experiences when it comes to land mammals, but what it lacks, it makes up for it in marine life.
The warm ocean waters are home to an abundant variety of animals, including over 25 species of dolphins and whales. Pilot whales are the most commonly sighted, as they live here year-round.
If you love wildlife, don’t miss the chance to go on a whale-watching cruise in Tenerife. There are tours departing from Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Los Gigantes every day.
Your chances of seeing whales and dolphins are excellent in Tenerife. I went on five boats and saw pilot whales every time. But by far my favorite memory was seeing pilot whales on my friend’s sailboat, swimming by the side of it at sunset.
Please choose an accredited dolphin watching tour that respects the animals and the local laws which protect them.
This tour from Costa Adeje goes with a biologist to respectfully observe the whales and dolphins in the Teno-Rasca Marine Protected area of Tenerife. They even bring a hydrophone so you can listen to the whales!

Los Gigantes Natural Pools
Tenerife has many natural pools, but my favorites are the ones by The Acantilados de Los Gigantes, towering 600m cliff formations formed by volcanic rock.
From the natural pool, you get a great view over the towering cliffs. There’s also a ridge you can sit on and feel the ocean water splash up over you. I could have sat there for hours! It’s one of the most beautiful things to see in Tenerife.
Surfing
One of the main reasons so many digital nomads come to Tenerife is for the surfing opportunities.
One of the best things to do in Playa de Las Americas is go surfing, where you can find plenty of surf lessons and board rentals readily available.
Some other popular beaches for surfing in Tenerife south are Las Conchas, Punta Blanca, and Las Galletas.

Tandem Paragliding

You’ll take off from a hillside and soar in the sky, getting an incredible birds-eye view. Enjoy the scenery as you descend into the golden beaches for a soft landing.

Tenerife Horse Rescue
One organization that is making a difference in the lives of animals here is the Tenerife horse rescue.
While they started out rescuing horses, the center now provides a safe home to dozens of animals in Tenerife, including donkeys, dogs, cats, guinea pigs, birds, and more.
What’s even more impressive is that they are 100% sustainably run! They feed all the volunteer sand animals using food waste from the local supermarkets, and everything there is powered with renewable energy. It’s an amazing place to see in Tenerife and talk with the volunteers who are so passionate about what they do.
They are only open for tours by donations, so be sure to contact them in advance to arrange.
Go windsuring in El Medano
El Medano is the official windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of Tenerife, so this is the place to go if you’re into those sports!
After spending some time in the water, fuel back up at one of the town’s bohemian-inspired cafes. I loved Bliss Cafe, which has delicious and healthy bowls.

One of the best things to do in Costa Adeje is visit Siam Park. It’s an epic waterpark full of adrenaline-packed rides, an enormous wave pool, and a mile-long lazy river. There are also lush gardens around that make this park feel like paradise.
Get skip-the-line tickets to Siam Park here
Visit Playa Las Amarilla
Okay, I know I said besides the beach in the title, but Playa Amarilla is so beautiful I can’t leave it out.
Just a couple of minutes’ walk from the parking lot you’ll see the sparling turquoise water against sandstone cliffs. But you can walk along them further to get an up-close look at their unique carvings. At the end, there’s a place you can go cliff diving into the water!
Go sea kayaking with dolphins
One of the best ways to see Tenerife is from the coast! On this kayaking tour, you’ll get the chance to paddle through marine reserves in search of dolphins and turtles.
Tenerife is home to five species of dolphins, including bottlenose, striped, and common dolphins. After watching the dolphins play in the water, you’ll then jump in to snorkel with sea turtles.
Visit underground caves
Did you know Tenerife is home to the 4th longest lava tubs in the world? And you can go inside them on a guided tour!
Visiting La Cueva de Los Vientos (the Cave of the Winds) is a Tenerife must see. Tours are limited in size and number per day, so you’ll want to book this one in advance.
Join a sailing tour
There’s no better way to spend a day in Tenerife than on a sailboat
We joined a private sailboat for the day and watched pilot whales, swam in the warm water, and enjoyed a fantastic seafood lunch before taking in the breathtaking sunset. It was one of my most memorable days in Tenerife!
Check prices of sailing tours here
Rent a jet ski
With so much ocean around to play in, renting a jet ski is one of the best ways to go Tenerife sightseeing.
On this tour, you can choose to ride a single-seater or a double-seater jet ski with a friend, bouncing over the Atlantic past cliffs and beaches.
Check prices of jet ski rentals here
Go diving
There’s a whole other world in the waters of Tenerife! While the diving here wasn’t as spectacular as the Galapagos or Malaysia, it’s probably the best you’re going to get in Europe. You can see marine life like sea turtles, stingrays, eels, and colorful fish.

Swim with sea turtles
I will never get tired of swimming with sea turtles, and Tenerife provides a great place to do with its rich marine habitat
This snorkeling trip from Costa Adeje takes you to the best sea turtle viewing spots and includes snorkeling gear, so you don’t need your own equipment.
Barranco Del Infierno Hike
Many people say that there isn’t any good hiking in the south of Tenerife, but clearly, they haven’t seen Barranco Del Infierno. This nature preserve is just a 10-minute drive from Playa Las Americas.
The trail takes about three hours round-trip, taking you through a stunning canyon with a small waterfall at the end.
Permits must be booked online in advance here as space is limited to 300 people a day, and you are required to wear a helmet.
Visit Masca Village
Masca Village is one of the best places to visit in Tenerife and my personal favorite place on the island.
Nicknamed the “Machu Picchu” of Spain, this quaint village is nestled in the Toro mountains. It’s where residents used to hide out when they were being attacked by pirates!
As you drive down the curvy road into the village, you’ll want to pull over constantly to soak in the spectacular views (and luckily, there are a few places to do so safely).
Masca is also one of the best places to go hiking in Tenerife. The most popular hiking trail, Masca Gorge, requires a permit that gets booked up well in advance. This 7km trail begins at the village and descends to the rocky beach below, with gorgeous views along the way.
But if you can’t get a permit, don’t worry. Check out some of the other trails on WikiLoc. We did this one, and the views were breathtaking.
Visit Punta de Teno lighthouse
Punta de Teno lighthouse is the most westerly point on the island. There’s a small lighthouse there you can see, but what I loved most about this area was watching the waves crash over the jagged cliffs.
Yoga class
Tenerife is a very spiritual place and has a huge yoga community. You can find yoga retreats and classes all over the island, and many people visit for that reason alone.
I did classes regularly with Sandrita at Playa Del Duque, which was a great way to start or end my day.
Things to do in Teide National Park
Teide National Park is one of Tenerife’s top attractions, so it’s worthy of its own section with so many exciting activities to do within the park.
Designated a UNESCO world heritage site, Teide is Europe’s most visited national park, with around three million visitors every year! It’s a hub for outdoor adventure, with endless hiking trails and rock climbing areas.
Climb the highest point in Spain
Tedie Nationa Park is most famous for Mount Teide, an epic volcano with a height of 3,718 meters. It’s Spain’s highest peak and can be spotted from all over the island.
It’s free to climb to the top of Teide, but you must obtain a permit in advance if you want to climb it in the day. For this reason, many people climb it at night and watch the sunrise from the top.
Take the cable car to the top
If you want to see the highest point without breaking a sweat, you can get (almost) to the top by taking the cable car up.
It’s a dramatic ascent up to 3500m, and if you want to get to the highest point, you’ll have to hike another 200m (and you need the permit).
The Teide cable car is one of the most popular Tenerife tourist attractions, so be sure to book your tickets online in advance.
They are also canceled often due to weather (sadly this happened to me), so leave some flexibility in your travel plans or add this to the start of your Tenerife itinerary so that you don’t miss out. Make sure to bring a jacket to the top, as it can be quite cold.
Watch the Sunset at Teide
One of my most memorable experiences inside Teide national park was watching the sunset over the clouds.
As you’re driving along the windy roads (which is an experience in itself), you’ll gain thousands of meters of elevation, putting you above the clouds.
And if you’re driving along around sunset, you’ll see many people parked off the side of the road to watch the spectacular sunset. Be sure to join them; it’s incredible.
Go stargazing
Due to the lack of light pollution around the park and geographical location, Teide offers some of the best stargazing in the world. You can see 83 of the 88 officially recognized constellations!
If you have a car you can go stargazing on your own, but if not, you can join a guided night tour.
This one combines two tours in one – a romantic sunset experience followed by stargazing. And it comes with a glass of Cava to go with the view! At night comes, your guide will provide you with information about the constellations and night sky.
Go Hiking Inside The Park
Aside from Mount Teide, there are several other excellent hiking trails inside the park.
One of my favorites is the Chinyero Volcano Loop, an easy two-hour loop with epic views of Tenerife’s newest volcano. This hike also takes you through pine forests, which are interesting to see in contrast to the desolate landscapes.
Another place you must see in Teide National Park is the Roques de García, which are fascinating 3000m+ rock formations created by millions of years of erosion.
ATV tour
For an adventurous alternative to exploring Teide by bus or car, check out this ATV tour.
You’ll get to enjoy the sun, breezes, and unobstructed views as you drive through rolling forests, with the chance to get off the paved road and discover dirt tracks inside the park.
Fun things to do in Tenerife North
Visiting Tenerife north is like going to a new country. After Teide, the landscapes completely change, and everything becomes much more green and lush. If you want to spend your Tenerife trip hiking, the north is the place to stay.
Anaga Rural Park
Covering the north of the island, Anaga rural park is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Tenerife. Here you’ll find green, jagged mountain peaks descending into volcanic black-sand beaches.
Anaga is accessible from Santa Cruz and La Laguna, so if you want to do multiple hikes within the park, it’s best to book a few nights’ accommodations in one of those places. Otherwise, you’ll be doing a lot of driving. From Playa Las Americas, it’s an hour+ drive to hiking trails within the park.
Known as the “enchanted forest,” Anaga is also one of the best places to see Laurel forests in Tenerife, which you can see driving through the park.
Another must-see place in Anaga is the black sand beach of Playa Benijo. It’s a popular place for surfing and has one of the best views of the Roques de Anaga. It’s also a nudist beach!
If you’re driving out of the park to La Laguna, be sure to stop at Mirador Cruz del Carmen viewpoint on the way out. It’s right off the road, and you’ll see many people pulled over admiring the stunning rolling hills and quaint villages.
See the Drago tree
While there used to be a lot of Drago trees in Tenerife, few remain today. However, you can still see one of the oldest known Drago trees in the world in Tenerife at Icod de los Vinos in the 15th-century historical quarter. It’s estimated to be over 1,000 years old!
San Cristobal de Laguna
San Cristobal de Laguna is one of Tenerife’s most charming Spanish towns. This UNESCO world heritage site is one of the best places to go if you’re interested in learning more about the island’s history; it was the island’s original capital.
Walking through the well-preserved 15th-century colorful buildings made me feel although I’d been transported back to Colombia!
You’ll also find many of Tenerife’s top cultural attractions here, including The Cathedral of La Laguna and Plaza del Adelantado. As La Laguna is also a university town, you’ll find plenty of trendy cafes and bars here.
Visit the island’s capital Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is the capital of Tenerife and the largest city. It’s full of history, with architecture dating back to the 15th century.
There are many things to do in Santa Cruz Tenerife, as it’s home to the top museums and architecture including the Tenerife Auditorium and the stunning Tenerife Espacio de las Artes.
Another must-see place is The Museum of Nature and Man, which contains an extensive collection of native tools and carving related to the history of the Canary Islands.
For one of the most local experiences, time your Tenerife vacation with Carnival in February. It’s considered the second largest in the world after Rio in Brazil and has been a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 1980.
Eat at a local Guachinche
Guachinches are local Canarian restaurants, and they are one of the best places to eat on a budget. Go with a group, as you’ll want to order several items and share.
Typical foods include potatoes with spicy sauce, fried goat cheese, grilled peppers, and lots of meat and seafood (it’s not great for vegans).
They will also serve you a liter or so of homemade wine to go with your meal. It’s extremely satisfying and will leave you feeling full for hours, and each person’s bill shouldn’t be more than 10 euros. To find one, just put ‘ Guachinche’ into Google Maps – they are mainly in the north of the island.
Visit Puerto de la Cruz
I spent my first three weeks living in Puerto de la Cruz which is a lovely seaside town. If you’re visiting the north, stop in for an afternoon and take a stroll along the palm-fringed promenade and through the town’s square. It has some nice restaurants, shops, and many street art murals thanks to the ongoing Puerto Street Art Project.
Some of the top things to do in Puerto de la Cruz are the castle of San Felipe, stroll along the boardwalk, the Botanical Gardens, and Plaza del Charco.
Go wine tasting
The rich volcanic soil in Tenerife provides the right environment to produce delicious wine that you can try on a wine tasting tour.
On this guided tour, you’ll visit a family-owned winery in the North of Tenerife surrounded by rolling hills.
The passionate sommelier will tell you all about the traditional production methods used on a tour of the cellars and vineyards, followed by a wine tasting paired with an aperitif.
Take in the views of Playa de las Teresitas
Ok, I’m making another exception about the beach because I can’t leave this one out. It’s not just black-sand beaches in the north; this part of Tenerife is home to one of the most beautiful golden sand beaches – Playa De Las Tersitas.
The sand was imported from former Spanish colonies in the Sahara. To truly appreciate it, head up the road that goes to Anaga to get a viewpoint from above. The contrast of the turquoise water next to the beach with the mountains in the distance is stunning!
Garachico Natural Pools
Garachico is one of the prettiest towns in the north of Tenerife. Many people visit for the natural salt-water rock pools that you can swim in. It’s a fun place to spend the afternoon in Tenerife, playing in the natural currents and chilling in the sun between swims.
Bonus: Take a day trip to La Gomera
La Gomera is the closest island to Tenerife and well worth a day trip. You can take a ferry there with Fred Olsen, which takes just under an hour. I recommend joining a day tour to maximize your time, as there is a lot to see.
The views of Teide from here are epic as you drive up the windy road from the port. Head up to the highest point on the island, Alto de Garajonay, where a quick 30-minute hike takes you up to sweeping views over the island. La Gomera is also home to some of the best-preserves Laurel forests in the Canary Islands.
End your day walking around the charming town of San Sebastian. It’s so colorful and cute!

- The 10 Best Things to do in Playa de las Americas, Canary Islands
September 24, 2021 Rebbecca Marino
Playa de las Americas, near Tenerife’s southwestern tip, is a lively, upbeat resort built in the 1960s. Today it’s crammed with British restaurants, bars and hotels and North European tourists. Its white sands attract hordes of sun worshippers, while nearby El Medano is famed for its windsurfing. Top attractions include sailing, golf and dinner theater shows, but it’s the nightlife on Veronica’s Strip that is the top draw for the crowds of young tourists who flock here to party around the clock.

ESCAPE ROOMS or ESCAPE GAMES are interactive games which you can come across in real life. Locked up in a room with a group of 2-4 people, you’ve got 60 minutes to fight through a maze of puzzles and mysteries and to open up the final exit door. In a room, designed to challenge your mind, creativity and logic, you need to work together with your team mates to get out in time. Using and combining the objects that can be found inside the escape room it takes the skills and thinking of the whole group to find the way out.

This sport is one in a million. So, if you are looking for a Playa de las Americas excursion or acivity that gives you a total freedom feeling, this one is the perfect one for you!
Paragliding is one of the most incredible sports ever. The principle is to use a canopy similar to those used in skydiving and gathering the thermal wind currents in order to stay as long as possible flying. This sport is normally practiced in mountainous regions as wind currents are affected by the orography, creating optimal conditions for the practice of this incredible aerial sport.
So, we bring you the opportunity of soaring the wide open sky over the stunning landscape of Tenerife in our tandem paragliding activity. It doesn’t matter if you are traveling with your couple, your family, and your friends, or even on your own — come what may, we have the perfect plan for you!
Playa de las Americas excursions — Teide National Park
The Teide National Park is a Little bit far from Playa de las Americas, but if you are going to stay in Tenerife, then you should for sure see the Teide Volcano at least once. El Teide is the biggest representation of the Canarian Island and locals are very proud of it. For them, it is the soul of the island.
To plan your visit to the Teide National Park from Playa de las Americas you should prepare everything in advance. It is about 4 hours away in public transport (342 bus line) and about an hour away by car. We insist, even though it may seem too far away, you should totally dedicate one day to explore all the different activities you can do in the Teide National Park.
Once you are there, you can hop on the cable car and enjoy the views or walk along some of the different trekking trails that they have made available for the visitors.
Flyboard – Playa de las Americas flying over the sea excursions and activities
Do you want to feel like Ironman? The flyboard is one of people’s favorite water sports. It is basically a board with water propulsion, attached to a Jet Ski that supplies the power needed to propel itself. It can be controlled with an optional remote control kit so you can be on top of the board controlling the power, but it can also be controlled from the Jet Ski by someone else.
And don’t worry if you haven’t tried it before, experience is not required and you will be guarded all the time by a monitor that will always take care of your safety. It is one of the most amazing things to do in Playa de Las Americas, so experience the coolest craze in water sports. Don’t miss it!
Playa de las Americas excursions — Loro Park
This is an excursion though for everyone, but above all, if you are looking for things to do in Tenerife with kids. Don’t you know Loro Park yet? It is one of the most famous and beloved animal parks in the Canary Islands. It is a must if you want to enjoy the Canarian wildlife with your family or friends. It houses an iceberg with more than 200 penguins.
The huge and impressive aquarium along with the shark tunnel will allow you to be face to face with the terrific and magical creatures that inhabit the oceans and rivers. Other performances that you cannot miss are the sea lions or the flying of amazing brightly coloured parrots around you.

Siam Park is considered to be one of the best water parks in the world due to its great combination of strong emotions and relaxing activities. Siam Park is an incomparable place where the whole family has its exclusive place for excitement, adventure and fun.
Siam Park is a must among the things to do in Tenerife. If you want to get out for a while of the typical touristic activities, here you have the chance to let yourself go and enjoy as much as you like.
If you go there, we recommend you to get the Fast Pass bracelet to avoid all the queues and lines because it can be sometimes a little crowded. So make sure you make the best out of your visit and save up some time skipping the waiting line for each ride.

Its waters are perfect for observing these animals because they are the most biodiverse waters in Europe.

Among these species, you will find different types of dolphins, killer whales or pilot whales. Watch them swimming on the loose in their habitat — we assure you that it is an extremely amazing experience.

Catamarans are also very stable boats, perfect for avoid getting sea sick. So, enjoy this amazing and unique experience watching whales and dolphins!

Teide National Park has been declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. It is a natural protected area and definitively a must for anyone who is visiting Tenerife. The unmovable Teide is waiting for those who dare to crown its top and behold its magic. Hike up to the 3,718 meters of the dormant volcano — and if you do it on a clear day, you will be able to see the seven islands of Canary Islands from its summit.
The adventure begins at the Cable Lift Base Station, from where you will go up to the Upper Station, which is about 3,500 meters above the sea level. When the hike begins, the trail will lead you to the crater of the volcano where you can still smell the harmless scent of sulphur. Do not miss this unique experience, and keep in mind that places are very limited!
Playa de las Américas excursions and activities — Parascending
Haven’t you tried parascending yet? If you are a lover of strong emotions and you die to feel how is it like to touch the sky, you should go on and try it. Parascending is a water sport in which you wear a parachute while you are connected to boat by a long rope. The rope pulls you up into the air as it moves forward on water.
Parascending is one of the experiences we believe you should do at least once in your life. In addition, you will get the best views of Tenerife while you relax and breathe in the salty air. If you are afraid of heights or you have vertigo, there is nothing you should worry about. At first you will feel nervous, but then, once you are in the sky, you will love so much the feeling of flying that you will forget all your worries.
Tenerife is known for their water sports activities, and there are thousands of alternatives. Since in Overfly we are in love with the sky, we believe that parascending is the best way to truly enjoy your time in Tenerife. You will get two of the best things of our island: the deep navy ocean and the clear blue sky.
Playa de las Américas excursions — Descent of the Masca gorge plus boat trip
Spectacular cliffs, deep ravines and a boat trip on the same excursion. This is what the descent of the Masca gorge offers! Hiking lovers will find the Masca gorge descent as one of the most beautiful routes in the Canary Islands.
The descent starts at Caserío de Masca, where you will also enjoy some of the best examples of traditional Canarian architecture. From this point, you will go into the ravine, whose huge walls of stone were used as a pirate hideout — at least, that is what the legend says.
The downhill walk takes approximately three hours. Three hours of pleasure while you enjoy those absolutely stunning views. This breathtaking landscape has been formed by the natural elements, both adverse and beautiful.
Once you approach the end of the descent, you will begin to hear the crashing sounds of the waves.
That sound will give you a preview of the beautiful beach that is waiting for you at the end of the path. There you will have the chance to have a refreshing and regenerating swim surrounded while you are surrounded by the stunning cliffs of Los Gigantes. After a little rest, you will go on board in a boat headed towards Puerto de Los Gigantes.
At the same time that you appreciate the beauty of the cliffs, don’t forget to look at that mysterious sea. Furthermore, if you pay attention, you will probably see some dolphins due to they are very common in these waters! If you decide to descend this natural canyon, don’t hesitate to admire the uniqueness of the landscape surrounding you. Its gorgeous cliffs and deep ravines are absolutely a must for serious nature lovers.

Playa de las Américas excursions — Communications and accommodation
In general, there are different options when it comes to transport in Tenerife. We believe the best one is to rent a car since it will give you much more freedom and you will be able to move all over the isle without worries.
However, the public transport is also a great option and also you will reduce carbon footprint (what is also great). You can use the “guagua” or buses to move from one part of the island to the other.
From the South Airport Reina Sofia you can take the bus line 450 which will take around 40 minutes to arrive. Then, Playa de las Americas has also connections with the bus lines 467 and 473. If you are coming from further away (the North part of the island, for example) you should keep in mind that going to Playa de las Americas in public transport will take you around 2 hours, so you should plan your trip in advance.
Playa de las Americas counts on luxury Hotels that will allow you to fully enjoy the excursions and activities. Some of the top picks for us are the Hotel Cleopatra Palace, the Iberostar Las Dalias or the Sol Tenerife Hotel. All of them offer really good services and the installations could not be better. But these are just some of our suggestions.
If you are planning to spend your next holiday in the south of Tenerife, don’t hesitate to enjoy the best Playa de las Americas excursions and activities — contact us and let us help you! We will be pleased to provide you all the information you need.
Las Americas – Tenerife, the best beaches and attractions
Holidays in Tenerife – Las Americas, Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, the three main resorts of Tenerife. Let’s try to understand their essence, find the best beaches in Tenerife and have fun.
You can relax, or you can travel, and this fully applies to Tenerife.
To rest means to stay in a good hotel, go to the beaches, go shopping, have fun in the evening, walk along the promenade, visiting bars, cafes, restaurants. With small nuances that everyone has their own, but something like this, do you agree?
Traveling involves frequent changes of location, car rental and more active pastime.
Las Americas is better suited for recreation, but you can also choose it as a location for 2-3 days to explore the surroundings and go further, for example, north to Puerto de la Cruz .
I will not impose the format, I will tell you about our impressions, best beaches and attractions area Las Americas in Tenerife.
Where is Las Americas
Las Americas is a popular resort in the south of Tenerife, 20 km. from the airport Tenerife SUR (Tenerife South).
It is also adjoined by Los Cristianos on one side and Costa Adeje on the other, forming a single tourist cluster. All three parts are roughly similar, the difference is in the details, which are decisive when choosing a place to stay.
Las Americas is the most budgetary of this trio. Here is the focus of inexpensive apartments, 3-4 * class hotels, surfer beaches and party places.
Los Cristianos – quieter than Las Americas, slightly more expensive, a little more respectable, although there is no noticeable difference. This part of Tenerife is preferred by couples or older people who passed the stage of passion for clubs and night bars 20-30 years ago.
Costa Adeje – the most respectable area of Tenerife, here is one of the best beaches in the south of Tenerife, expensive restaurants on the coast, five-star luxury hotels and no drunk tourists. An ideal resort for those who love peace, a beautiful promenade and a beach without waves, comfortable hotels and cozy restaurants overlooking the ocean and can afford it all.
However, no one bothers to live in one area, and go to the beach or restaurants in another.
The length of the coast from the first beach in the area of Los Cristianos to the beach del Duque in Costa Adeje is 9 km., A pedestrian promenade runs through the entire coast. Las Americas is located in the middle and is very convenient if you plan to explore the area on foot.
Getting to Las Americas
You will most likely arrive at Tenerife South Airport (Tenerife SUR). From here to Las Americas – about 20 km. and the cheapest way to get there is by bus 111, 450, 343.
If you arrive at the North Airport, which is 85 km away, then you need to take bus 343 through the capital of Tenerife – Santa Cruz.
If you are planning a vacation in the south of Tenerife, pay attention to the airport of arrival when buying a ticket. You need Tenerife South (Tenerife SUR).
Bus station is located on the border of Costa Adeje and Las Americas.
The second way is to take a taxi, you can order it online now , the driver will meet you in the arrivals hall with a sign with your name and take you to your destination.
The third way is to rent a car. Relevant if you plan to devote part of your vacation to exploring the rest of the island.
We use the Rentalcars car search and booking site. It’s the same as Booking.com only in the car rental world.
Things to do in Las Americas, where to go
Las Americas is a long promenade along the ocean, for hikers – an activity for the whole day. There are a lot of beautiful locations and viewing platforms.
Las Americas has an incredible number of restaurants of all world cuisines, you can try any dishes except for the real Canarian cuisine. Behind them you need to go to the north or inland.
Bars, discos and casinos open in the evening. The most famous green quarter is Las Veronicas, if you want adventure or hang out, you are here. It is located near the youth beach of Las Americas – Troy.
Children can go to entertainment centers – Siam Park and Aqualand water parks, animal parks – Monkey Park, Jungl Park eagle park, cactus park.
If shopping is considered entertainment, then a great place to shop is Siam Shopping Center, in the center of Las Americas. Another place for shopping and entertainment is Avenida de las Américas, also called the Golden Mile. It is located on the border with Los Cristianos.
If your soul asks for more – go to see the best sights of Tenerife with a rental car or with a tour from the locals. The obligatory program is the Teide volcano, Loro Park, the village of Masca, the town of Garachico, the main city of the north – Puerto de la Cruz, Anaga Park.
The best beaches of the coast near Las Americas
I will list all the best beaches from Los Cristianos to Costa Adeje, and at the end I will name my favorites, on some we spent the whole day – time allowed.
Playa de Las Vistas There is a port next to this beach – ferries from neighboring islands come here. Water circulation is good due to waves, so the water is clean. Long with a comfortable entry into the water and yellow sand.
Playa del Camison – 400 meters of quality beach for a family relaxing holiday, there is all the infrastructure.
Playa de Las Americas – the beach is more suitable for surfers or for watching them, there are no breakwaters and constantly high waves. That is what makes him attractive.
Playa Troya (Troya beach) – the main party beach of Las Americas, a lot of cheap housing around and young people. If the goal is a budget vacation and partying, then you are here.
Playa de Puerto Colon ( Playa de la Pinta) There is a yacht marina nearby, and on the beach itself, poor water circulation is the main drawback of the beach. There are no showers, but there are a lot of children’s beach activities. As for me, you can come here to relax with children, and swim on other beaches.
Playa del Bobo – the beach of one Gran Tinerfe 4 * hotel, the hotel was one of the first in Tenerife, therefore it is located right on the beach, there is a restaurant, sunbeds, showers. Nothing outstanding if overall.
Playa Fanabe (Fanabe beach) is the longest beach in Tenerife, also divided into two parts. Here are the most expensive sunbeds and umbrellas, but also the best water activities. If you like to spend time on the beaches – you are here. There are plenty of places to eat and drink along the beach. The entrance to the water is comfortable, there are waves, but not as big as on Las Americas beach.
Playa del Duque is the best beach in Las Americas, territorially belongs to the more respectable Costa Adeje. Golden sand, cleanliness, smooth entry into the water with a quick increase in depth. The beach is an oval bay, which was slightly lengthened due to breakwaters, there are practically no waves. There are viewing platforms on both sides of the beach. Along the beach there are expensive restaurants and cafes.
Now our favorite beaches in Las Americas.
9 favorites0007 Playa de l Duque (El Duc) on Costa Adeje, in which absolutely everything is beautiful and I hope it will remain so.
The second and third place are divided by the beaches of Los Christianos – Playa De LAS Vistas and Playa Camison , they are next to the promenade, good sand, inexpensive and cozy cafes on the beach, easy parking nearby.

When to go to rest in Las Americas
In the south of Tenerife you can relax all year round: water temperature 21-23, air +22-25. From March to November, both water and air are slightly warmer. Therefore, if the emphasis is on swimming and beach holidays, plan your vacation in Tenerife from March to November. If you are interested in hiking in the mountains, go to the north of Tenerife, visit villages and small coastal towns – all year round.
There are fewer tourists from mid-January to mid-March, then the number of tourists increases gradually. Traditionally, there are many tourists in May, during the May holidays.

what to see and do
Tenerife is very diverse, so the tourist immediately has a question – where to go and what to miss. I have collected all the most interesting in one place, and I will advise what you should pay attention to. Use my tips for visiting Tenerife attractions.
The most important thing is to rent a car. Only in this way you will be able to visit the maximum number of interesting places in the minimum time. It will also significantly save your budget – rent and gasoline are inexpensive here, and roads are free.
CONTENTS
What are the must-sees in Tenerife?
- Go to the Teide volcano.
- Drive along a winding road to the village of Maska and the gorge of the same name.
- Look at penguins, hippos and parrots, visit the killer whale show in Loro Park.
- Take a ride on the water slides of Siam Park.
- Burrow into the black volcanic sand and swim in the refreshing ocean.
- Watch whales and dolphins on a boat trip.
- Drive to the town of Los Gigantes, be impressed by the majestic rocks and swim in the natural pool.
- Walk through the forests of Anaga and see for yourself how different nature can be on a small island.
- Drive to the Teno lighthouse, walk around Garachico on the way back.
- Take a ride to the capital of Santa Cruz, walk around the city, swim on Las Teresitas beach, look at its panorama from a height.
In what order should I visit the sights?
The island has a huge number of beautiful places and vivid impressions. To truly experience Tenerife, it is important to plan your visits correctly. Then you will have time to see all the most interesting, and the impressions will be more vivid day by day.
- Cities in the northwest of Tenerife (Masca, Garachico), Teno National Park.
- Cities of the north of Tenerife (Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Bahamar).
- Teide National Park and Volcano.
- Forests of Anaga, cities of La Laguna and Santa Cruz.
I recommend to stick to the following scheme: 1 day of active excursion – 1 day of quiet rest (beach, amusement parks, zoos). And do not plan anything for the day of arrival and departure.
Natural attractions
Mount Teide
Address | Parque Nacional del Teide, Santa Cruz de Tenerife |
Cost per visit | Free |
Cable car price | Adult 27 EUR
Child EUR 13.50 |
Opening hours of cable car | 9:00 – 16:00 |
Important to know! | Warm clothes and comfortable shoes are required.
A permit is required to visit Mount Teide. Without it, you can climb to the top station of the cable car and go to the observation decks. |
Road to Mount Teide
Teide is the island’s most visited attraction and is the first place tourists come to visit. Surrounded by Martian landscapes of lava fields, almost in the very center of Tenerife, Mount Teide rises to more than 3 kilometers.
On the way to the volcano, you will pass through completely different worlds – amazing dense forests will replace sparse desert vegetation, a narrow winding mountain path will turn into a straight highway crossing a lifeless lava desert.
Clouds and fog in the mountains will hide the sun, but when you rise above two kilometers, you will see the clearest blue sky.
There are a lot of bizarre lava formations in the park itself, the views are fantastic.
Sign to the Teide cable car
The easiest way to get here is by car, or with a group or individual tour. There is an option to take public transport, but it is extremely inconvenient.
There is parking near the lower station of the cable car, where you can leave your car and move on to the top.
A cable car leads to the very top, but if you have the desire and strength, you can try to climb on foot.
You can get there quickly by cable car, but quite expensive, and walking is long and difficult – not everyone can get there.
Climbing to a height, do not forget about the elevation difference and lack of oxygen, which can make you feel bad. Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with heart and vascular diseases should be careful. It is advisable to exclude alcohol.
Cable car to the top of Teide
To save time on landing, it is better for independent travelers to buy a cable car ticket in advance. Most of the visitors are in the morning and in the afternoon – at this time the main sightseeing buses come.
Due to weather conditions, the cable car may be closed, especially in winter.
At the top station there are several observation decks from where magnificent views of the whole of Tenerife and neighboring islands open up. Keep in mind that there is nothing at the top but mountains, wind and a tiny cafe at the station.
Much colder at altitude, strong winds, snow and ice, so dress warmly.
View from the top of Mount Teide
To climb even higher, to the Teide crater itself, you need to obtain a special free permit in advance. Their number is limited, so order well in advance, at least a few months.
The permit is for a specific day and time, so book multiple permits for different dates. This will insure in case the cable car is closed.
Teide National Park
Address | Parque Nacional del Teide, Santa Cruz de Tenerife |
Cost | Free |
Road to the Teide National Park
Teide Park is the place where all tourists pass on the way to the volcano. The national park is considered the main natural attraction of the island, and the second most visited national park in the world. Located in the crater of the Las Cañades del Teide volcano.
There is a huge lava field with bizarre rock formations, the landscapes are completely alien.
Teide National Park
From mid-spring to autumn, summer reigns in the park – desert vegetation turns green, amazing flowers bloom. The contrast of bright colors of plants and lifeless lava fields is striking.
There are many hiking trails in the park, detailed information and maps for them can be obtained from the park information centre.
Anaga
Address | Macizo de Anaga, 38139 Las Casas de la Cumbre, Santa Cruz de Tenerife |
Cost | Free |
Important to know! | There are several protected areas with restricted access, a separate permit is required |
Forests of Anaga
This magnificent natural reserve, Rural de Anaga Park, is just a short drive from the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
You will see rocky mountain ranges, ravines and green valleys stretching all the way to the sea and turning into small cozy beaches where you can swim and relax.
There are several interesting hiking trails in the mountains that attract hikers and trekkers.
Forest road to Anaga
Streams and lakes along the way will refresh you even on the hottest day.
The mountain slopes are covered with the famous laurel forests. This is a real relic forest over 40 million years old. Dracaena and Canarian palms grow in the coastal zone.
There are a lot of birds in the park, including such endemics as the Canary and Laurel pigeons. Rare species of animals can be found in the water: the Canary eel, the Canary whiting and a very beautiful stingray – the sea cat.
Moonscape
Address | 38616 Villaflor, Santa Cruz de Tenerife |
Cost | Free |
Important to know! | Accessible only on foot |
Lunar landscape in Tenerife
You don’t need a trip to the moon or a telescope to see the lunar landscape. It is enough to visit the Corona Forestal park near the village of Vilaflor.
The landscape really seems extraterrestrial, just look at these photos.
You can get here on foot with three routes ranging from 2. 2 km, 3.7 km and 9 km – choose the one that suits you according to the time available and your fitness. Plan on visiting at least a couple of hours.
Los Gigantes Rocks
Address | Los Gigantes |
Cost | Free |
Important to know! | Bring your bathing suit – there are great beaches and the best natural pool in Tenerife. |
Cliffs of Los Gigantes, view from the observation deck
The highest cliffs of Los Gigantes on the coast of the Teno Natural Park protect the resort town of the same name. They rise 600 meters above the water and go to a depth of 50 meters.
The best view of the mighty mountains is from one of the many viewpoints and Los Gigantes beach right under the rocks. Another attraction is also visible from the lookouts – the Teno lighthouse on the western tip of the island of Tenerife. In good weather you can see the island of La Gomera.
Access by car or public transport. There are usually no problems with parking on observation decks, but it is much more difficult near the beach. An alternative is paid parking at the port, from where it is a few minutes walk to the beach.
Highly recommend to visit – the views are magnificent.
Hell’s Gorge – Barranco del Infierno
Address | Barranco del Infierno, 20-24 38280 Tegueste |
Cost | Adult – 8 EUR
Child – 4 euros |
Operating hours | 08:00 – 14:30 |
Important to know! | No more than 300 people per day are allowed on the route, so it is better to book tickets in advance.
Children under 5 not admitted, under 16 with parents only |
Infernal Gorge Tenerife
The gorge is not scary at all, rather very picturesque. It is considered the deepest gorge on the island. Located in a mountain range, there is a good cafe.
The area is only accessible on foot, so comfortable trekking shoes are recommended. For added security, everyone is given a helmet at the entrance.
The route ends at a waterfall 200 meters high.
The easiest way to get there is by car. A visit is highly recommended.
Black volcanic sand beaches
Cost | Free |
Important to know! | Fine sand clogs into the fabric of swimsuits and clothes, so I recommend not to wear light-colored |
The small beach of La Arena is located in a picturesque bay near the resort of Los Gigantes. Very fine volcanic sand gets very hot in the sun, so flip flops are a must.
Volcanic beaches covered with black sand are the visiting card of Tenerife. I recommend the beach in Los Gigantes (at the same time combine with the rocks of the same name) and in Playa de la Arena. There are still plenty of black sand beaches on the north and east coasts, but getting there from the south is much longer than Los Gigantes.
It is believed that such sand has a beneficial effect on health. To believe it or not is a personal matter for everyone, but the sensations from the sand are really unusual.
To choose the right beach, I recommend my article.
Natural pools
Cost | Free |
Important to know! | Some pools may be closed due to strong waves. It is advisable to have comfortable shoes for swimming – there are sharp stones in the water. |
Volcanic natural pool in Tenerife. The water in them is usually very clear and slightly warmer than in the ocean.
Tenerife’s volcanic natural pools are a real miracle of nature. They were formed during volcanic eruptions – hot lava formed bizarre bays on the coast, which are filled with the purest ocean water. Many pools are additionally landscaped – comfortable slopes, stairs, benches are made. Entrance is free everywhere.
In my opinion, the best pools in the southern part of Tenerife are in the town of Los Gigantes and Alcala. There are a lot of pools in the northern part, but lay the time for the road from the south – about 1-2 hours.
In any case, it is worth visiting at least 1-2 lava pools, because there are very few such places on our planet.
For a selection of the best natural pools in Tenerife, see my separate article.
Corona Forestal Pine Forest
This place is perfect for leisurely walks, relaxing holidays and a family picnic in nature. Canarian pines grow here, which are much higher than usual. Their height is up to 57 meters, and the needles are huge, up to 35 centimeters. The same big cones can be taken as a souvenir from Tenerife.
How to get there? By bus: from Costa Adeje No. 342; from Puerto de la Cruz No. 348; from Guia de Isora No. 492.
But it’s easier and faster by car. Can be combined with a visit to the Teide volcano.
Cave of the Wind Cueva del Viento
Address | |
Cost | Adults – 16 euros
Children – 5 euros |
Important to know! | Wear comfortable shoes and comfortable, windproof clothing.
Children under 5 years old are not allowed. The duration of a standard tour is 2 hours. |
The Cave of the Wind was formed 27,000 years ago in basaltic lava during the first eruptions of the volcano Pico Viejo, brother of Teide. The name of the cave is associated with the air currents passing here. The length is about 18 kilometers – this is the fifth largest in the world and the first in Europe among the caves of volcanic origin.
Wind Cave is a network of labyrinths and passages with numerous branches. Some of them have not yet been explored, and the exact dimensions of the cave have yet to be known by scientists. The network of galleries is arranged in three overlapping levels, making the cave unique in the world. In addition, there are many lava stalactites, lava cascades and lakes in the cave, there are side terraces.
For security reasons, there is a limit on the number of visitors, helmets and flashlights are issued at the entrance.
Worth a visit if there is no fear of enclosed spaces. Most likely, good photos in the cave will not work, but the impressions received will last for a long time.
Parque del Drago and Dragon Tree
Address | Parque Del Dragó, 38430 Icod de los Vinos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. |
Price (high / low season) | Adults – 5 EUR / 4 EUR
Students and pensioners – 3 euros / 2.5 euros Children €2.5 / €2 (up to 6 years free) |
Operating hours | April to September: 09:00 to 20:00
Other months: from 10:00 to 18:30 |
Important to know! | It can get chilly, take windproof clothing. |
Parque del Drago is located in the quiet town of Icod de los Vinos, just behind the Plaza de la Constitution, which is lined with traditional Canarian houses. It is in this park that you can see the main local attraction – the giant dracaena, or the Dragon Tree.
The El Drago tree is considered the largest and oldest dragon tree in the world and the oldest in the Canary Islands, surrounded by a small pleasant park.
El Drago Dragon Tree
Most guidebooks say that the dracaena is a thousand years old, but the real age is estimated by scientists at about 800 years. With a height of more than 16 meters and a trunk diameter of about 20 meters, the Dragon Tree really stands out from its relatives.
Despite all the popularity, I cannot definitely recommend the Parc del Drago for a visit. You can go here by combining a trip with a visit to other attractions in the north of the island – the Butterfly Park, Garachico, Cape Teno.
However, the town of Icod itself is very nice and pleasant, there is usually no heat here, but a pleasant coolness reigns. If you have time, take a walk around the city, sit in one of the many street cafes and admire the historic Canarian architecture.
Maska Gorge and village of the same name
Address | La Masca, 38489 Masca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain |
Cost | Free |
Operating hours | The village is available for visiting at any time.
The gorge is temporarily closed. It is planned to open in the summer season of 2020 (previously, the opening date has already been postponed by 2 years) |
Important to know! | It can be chilly, take windproof clothes and comfortable shoes. |
Tucked away in the mountains far from the tourist resorts, on the slopes of Masiso de Teno, is the small and picturesque village of Masca. Until the 70s of the 20th century, no roads were built into the village, so its inhabitants – mostly descendants of local aborigines (Guanches) – lived isolated from the rest of the island.
View of the village and the Maska gorge
But with the construction of the road, tourists began to visit here. They are attracted by the quiet unhurried life, legends about pirate treasures hidden nearby, and the gorge of the same name with steep cliffs, caves and waterfalls, descending to a black sand beach right on the ocean.
Since the gorge itself is temporarily closed to the public (due to security issues), I recommend driving to the village of Masca. The road is very steep and winding, be careful. If you go slowly, you will get great pleasure even from the route itself. You will park in a free parking lot, walk around the “lost” village, take many beautiful landscape photos.
I strongly do not recommend taking a group tour here – a lot of people, typical stories and jokes, the bus is very sick. If possible, book an individual tour, get much more impressions.
Masca Beach can be reached by boat from the port of Los Gigantes. Do not forget to ask about the return time, otherwise there is a risk of staying on the beach overnight.
Tenerife’s Miradors
Miradors are specially equipped viewing platforms with allocated parking spaces. Some miradors have cafes and tourist information. From here you can take stunning photos of the surrounding landscapes.
There are many Miradors in Tenerife, so I tried to mark on the map the best ones recommended for visiting.
The most convenient way to get to the Miradores is by car, but even with group tours, stops are provided at the best points.
Tenerife Zoos
Loro Parque
Address | Avenida Loro Parque, s/n
38400, Puerto de la Cruz. Spain |
Cost | Adults – 38 euros
Children from 6 to 11 years old – 26 euros (up to 6 years old – free of charge) |
Operating time | Daily 8:30 – 18:45 |
Important to know! | Reserve a whole day for a visit.
Tickets purchased online are only valid from the next day – buy in advance. It is profitable to buy a double ticket to Loro and Siam parks with a significant discount – 66 euros for an adult and 45.50 euros for children. The killer whale attraction is paid separately, the cost is 1 euro. |
Loro Parque has been named the best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor for many years. Loro means parrot in Spanish, and Loro Parque means parrot park. This is not surprising, because more than a thousand species of these beautiful birds are collected here.
Tiger in Loro Park
But parrots are just one of the many species of living beings represented in the park. Here you will find both a red panda and a flock of pink flamingos, lions and tigers, monkeys and even penguins, for which a real penguinarium has been built, imitating the conditions of Antarctica.
New animals are constantly appearing, recently pygmy hippos have settled here.
The huge aquarium contains sharks, rays and other marine life.
A real snowy country has been made for the penguins in Loro Park, with a large pool and ice slides
The territory is very large, well thought out infrastructure, there are various cafes and fast food at affordable prices. There are picnic areas, so you can take food with you.
Lots of greenery. Despite the huge number of visitors, everyone is dispersed throughout the park, so the feeling of a crowd is rare. There are also quite secluded corners.
Entertainment shows are held – with parrots, sea lions, dolphins and even huge killer whales.
At the killer whale show, pay attention to the “splash zone” – choose these places only if you are not afraid to get wet. Before the start of the show, a warning about the consequences of “splashes” is broadcast on a huge screen, because these are not just some kind of splashes, but a real stream of water that can douse you from head to toe.
You can buy a special rain cover (sold locally). Be sure to put away equipment and documents in a waterproof place.
Killer whales in Loro Parque surprise with wonders of dexterity
All shows are free for park visitors.
Separately, I want to mention the so-called nursery and kindergarten for animals and birds, as well as the hospital. For the very young inhabitants of the park, a whole zone has been allocated (Animal Embassy), where the future inhabitants of Loro Park are gradually growing up and preparing for adulthood.
Plan at least a few hours to visit Loro Park. It will be interesting for both children and adults. All the inhabitants are kept in excellent conditions, they are well cared for and fed. After visiting, there is no feeling of guilt towards animals and hopelessness, which, unfortunately, arises after Russian zoos.
Tip: If you enjoy the park, buy a return ticket at the box office before leaving. It is valid for a month and costs significantly less than a regular ticket at the box office. Please note that it is assigned to a specific person – when buying, they will take your fingerprint.
How to get to Loro Parque
You can get here by car or by Loro Park’s branded bus. Parking in the park is paid, it costs 4 euros. You can park for free in the streets nearby. You can buy a ticket with a transfer here.
If you are traveling on your own, I recommend booking a ticket in advance via the Internet. So you save time at the entrance, because there are usually long queues at the box office.
If you plan to visit Siam Park, then take a Twin ticket with a significant discount.
It is important to remember that tickets purchased online are valid for a year, but only from the day after the purchase. Therefore, you need to take care of the ticket at least on the eve of the trip, it will not work to buy via the Internet directly at the box office today.
Jungle Park, or Orlov Park
Address | Urbanización Las Águilas del Teide s/n
38640 ARONA-TENERIFE SUR. Spain |
Online price | Adults and children over 10 years old – 28 euros
Children from 5 to 10 years old – 20 euros Children from 3 to 4 years old – 11 euros Up to 3 years free of charge |
Operating hours | Daily 10:00 – 17:30 |
Important to know! | Book a few hours for a visit.
Tickets purchased online are only valid from the next day – buy in advance. Bobsleigh attraction is paid separately. |
Before the opening of Loro Park, Jungle Park was the largest zoo in Tenerife. Now most tourists prefer the hyped Loro Park, but personally I think both are worth a visit, and here’s why.
Eagles in the Jungle Park
Previously, the park was positioned as an eagles’ park – a lot of winged inhabitants from the hawk family are gathered here, several daily performances are held with these amazing predators. Huge birds fly over the very heads of the spectators, fly away into the distance and return again. The eagle show is free for visitors.
Now the park is gradually being repositioned as a Jungle Park, because it really looks like a real jungle. A particularly striking contrast is the lush vegetation in the park with the semi-desert landscape of the southern coast of Tenerife. In Loro Park, this is not felt.
The decline in the popularity of the park, in my opinion, only added to its attractiveness – there are no crowds of tourists, there are also no queues to enter. You can wander almost completely alone, not meeting a soul for a long time.
The main amphitheater hosts free shows with sea lions and parrots. There is also a cafe, so during the show you can have a bite to eat. Prices in cafes are much higher than in Loro Park, lay down about 20 euros per person. But you can take food with you, the main thing is not to take glass bottles.
Lemurs bask in the sun in Tenerife’s Jungle Park
There are other activities in the park, such as swimming with fur seals. It is very exciting, children will definitely like to cuddle with these cute creatures. Lemurs are very popular – these cute animals familiar to us from cartoons bask in the sun, funny spreading their paws to the sides, and even let themselves be stroked.
The territory of the jungle park is much smaller than Loro Park, but still large in area, and no less interesting. Just walking around the park will take more than an hour, but you also want to see the inhabitants. Having visited these two places, it is hard to give preference to one of them, each park is original and amazing in its own way.
You can get here by car or by Loro Park’s branded bus. Parking in the park is paid, it costs 4 euros. You can park for free on the street nearby. You can buy a ticket with a free transfer along the south coast here.
It is important to remember that tickets purchased online are valid for a year, but only from the day after the purchase. Therefore, you need to take care of the ticket at least on the eve of the trip, it will not work to buy via the Internet directly at the box office today.
Monkey Park
Address | Urbanización Las Águilas del Teide s/n
38640 ARONA-TENERIFE SUR. Spain |
Online price | Adults – 10 euros
Children from 5 to 12 years old – 5 euros Up to 5 years free of charge |
Operating hours | Daily 9:30 – 17:00 |
Important to know! | Allow 1-2 hours for a visit.
Tickets purchased online are only valid from the next day – buy in advance. |
Tourists who have settled in Los Cristianos are lucky to find nearby Manchi Park. It contains not only monkeys, but also other cute animals. Visitors can not only look at the hospitable little inhabitants, but also feed them and even pet them.
Tip: If you want to pet a fluffy and affectionate lemur, don’t forget to bring a treat in the form of carrots, cabbage or corn. They are very fond of begging and may not come up if they do not have something tasty in their hands.
These animals will give indescribable emotions and cheerful mood not only to children, but also to adults. Watching tailed creatures is a pleasure.
From the main resorts of the southern coast of Tenerife, the road will take no more than 20 minutes, so you can come here on any convenient day when you have a couple of hours of free time. Interesting, exciting, but not necessarily to visit.
Butterfly Park
Address | Av. de Canarias, s/n, 38430 Icod de los Vinos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife |
Online price | Adults – 8.5 euros
Children from 2 to 12 years old – 5 euros Up to 2 years free of charge |
Operating hours | Daily 10:00 – 18:00 |
Important to know! | Book about an hour for a visit.
Combine with an overview of other sights of the north. Recommended to visit in sunny warm weather. |
Located in Icod de lo Vinos, next to the famous Dragon Tree. It doesn’t make sense to go here specially, but to look on the way to the northern beauties is quite.
More than 800 butterflies from all over the world are collected here in one place, and all of them can be seen in the open area of the park. The species of these winged insects presented to visitors change with the season, as butterflies usually live no more than three days, and each species prefers its own climate and season.
For visitors there is a cinema hall, a lecture hall and a laboratory where you can see the birth of a butterfly from a cocoon.
The park is small, so the visit will not take long. Highly recommend for visiting with children – they will be delighted.
Man-made attractions Tenerife
Pyramids of Guimar
Address | Calle Chacona, s/n, 38500 Güímar, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain |
Cost | Adults:
Children aged 7 to 12:
Children under 2 free of charge |
Operating time | Daily 09:30 – 18:00
Weekends December 25 and January 1 |
Important to know! | Plan a couple of hours for a visit. |
Guimar Pyramids is one of the most controversial sights of Tenerife. There are different opinions about the age and purpose of the pyramids. Someone believes that the pyramids appeared a long time ago, even before the Guanches – the natives of Tenerife. Others believe that the pyramids were built by farmers from the stones collected on the land, and served as a fortification of the terraces. Some believe in the magical powers of the pyramids, considering them to be ritual structures where you can get a boost of positive energy.
Pyramids of Guimar in Tenerife: the great pyramid
Whatever it is, the pyramids are still worth seeing.
The Pyramids of Guimar, like the pyramids of Central and South America, have a regular stepped shape, but they are much smaller in scale. With a height of up to 12 meters and a length of faces from 15 to 80 meters, built from processed pieces of lava, six surviving pyramids are located on the territory of the Guimar reserve. They are clearly oriented to the cardinal points, and to climb to the top, a stone staircase was made in the direction from west to east.
In addition to the pyramids, there is an ethnographic museum and a photo exhibition by Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian archaeologist, traveler and chief researcher of these mysterious structures.
The museum houses a copy of the legendary Kon Tiki papyrus boat, on which Heyerdahl made his legendary journey across the Atlantic Ocean.
Worth a visit if you have free time. I wouldn’t go specifically.
Teno Lighthouse
Address | Punta Teno Lighthouse
38480 Buenavista del Nte., Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain |
Cost | Free |
Operating hours | Daily |
Important to know! | It gets cold and windy – bring windproof clothing.
Be careful on the road – it is narrow and sometimes blocked due to landslides. |
View of Teno Lighthouse from Cape
The Teno Lighthouse is visible from afar. It attracts vacationers in Los Gigantes with its mystery, but getting to it is not so easy. It is located on the westernmost point of the island of Tenerife – at Cape Teno.
There are two lighthouses here: an old lighthouse of the 19th century, built of stone, and a new lighthouse – red and white, towering above the old one. There are also several observation decks that offer beautiful views of the surroundings.
Teno Lighthouse
To get to the lighthouse from the southern resorts, you need to lay at least 1-1.5 hours on the road.
I recommend combining a visit to the lighthouse with other northern sights – the Dragon Tree, the town of Garachico and the village of Masca.
Be prepared for the fact that you won’t be able to get here by public transport – only by your own car or with a guide. The road in some places is very narrow, there are landslides, so the road can be blocked.
Before the final stretch of the road there is a warning that traffic is prohibited – do not take it literally, the road is decent enough, but you need to be careful and look at the situation.
Definitely recommend for romantics.
Lighthouse Anaga
Address | Punta de Anaga Lighthouse, 38129 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain |
Cost | Free |
Operating hours | Daily |
Important to know! | Access to visitors inside is closed.
Plan a few hours for your visit, preferably the whole day. Bring food, water and comfortable clothing. |
Another lighthouse, Punta de Anaga, is located on the northernmost point of Tenerife, where the Anaga Mountains meet the Atlantic Ocean. Built in 1863, having undergone a complete reconstruction, it is now fully automated and regularly performs its function – it warns passing ships.
Anaga Lighthouse in Tenerife
The easiest way to get to the lighthouse is from the sea, but there are also hiking trails. It is best to leave the car in the village of Charmorga (arrive no later than 10-11 am), and choose a route. The average distance is 3-4 kilometers of winding descents and ascents along mountain paths.
The views are absolutely fantastic, there is silence and clean air around.
Relatively close to the pleasant wild beach of Roque Bermejo, where you can recuperate after a walk.
I recommend bringing plenty of water, snacks and comfortable clothes with shoes. Visit is optional.
Historic towns
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
Cesar Manrique Water Park is located right off the coast of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, near the Auditorium. Don’t forget sun cream and hat
Capital of the island and major port. There are many well-preserved buildings in the colonial style, beautiful squares, cozy streets, museums, exhibitions. There are even several skyscrapers – the status of the capital obliges.
The hallmark of the city is the building of the Opera Auditorio de Tenerife.
Be sure to check out the local Nuestra Senora de Africa market (open in the first half of the day), take a leisurely stroll through the center, have a bite to eat in one of the many cafes.
Then head to Tereistas Beach, which is a short drive from Santa Cruz.
Puerto de la Cruz
The Lago Martianez pool complex is one of the main attractions of Puerto de la Cruz
A major port in Tenerife, located on the northwest coast of the island.
The city began to develop after the destruction of the port of Garachico by a volcano, and since then has become one of the largest ports of the Canary Islands.
Famous for its natural black sand beaches, Loro Parque and the Lago Martianes complex.
Remains of the 18th century Santa Barbara Fortress and the 17th century customs house remain in the old harbor.
Garachico
View from the ocean to the town of Garachico
Formerly the main port of Tenerife, now it is a small town with natural lava pools, pleasant Canarian houses and magnificent views of the mountains and the ocean.
The town has preserved a small fort of San Miguel, which protected the port from pirates (the entry fee is a symbolic 1 euro).
Combine your trip to Garachico with a trip to Cape Teno or other towns in the north of Tenerife.
La Orotava
Small town with typical Canarian architecture and winding cobblestone streets. Tourists even came up with their own name for this place – the city of a thousand balconies. The most famous building is called the House of the Balconies (Casa de los Balcones), entrance is 5 euros, for an additional 2 euros you can get a glass of local wine.
San Cristobal de la Laguna
La Laguna is considered the cultural capital of Tenerife. Included in the UNESCO list because of the well-preserved architectural monuments of the colonial era. It is worth seeing the building of the oldest university in the Canaries, the lush Adelantado Square, and the monasteries of St. Catherine and St. Clara. The entrance to the Cathedral of San Cristobal is paid, about 5 euros.
The city has practically merged with the capital city of Santa Cruz.
Candelaria
People come here to see the famous Basilica of the patroness of the Canary Islands, Our Lady of Candelaria. Twice a year, on February 2 and August 15, there is a city festival dedicated to the Virgin of Candelaria with torches, festivities and colorful fireworks.
Icod de los Vinos
This town is the center of Tenerife’s winemaking, so many shops offer wine and various liqueurs. To make a good purchase, check out a free tasting at Malvasia Casa de Los Reyes. If you wish, you can buy a bottle with you at a price of 5 euros.
Icod de los Vinos is famous for its giant dracaena (dragon tree) and butterfly park, I wrote about them above.
Water parks
Siam park
Address | Avda. Siam Park s/n. Adeje |
Cost | Adults – 38 euros
Children from 3 to 11 years old – 26 euros Children under 3 free of charge |
Operating hours | Summer 10:00 – 18:00
Winter 10:00 – 17:00 |
Important to know! | Reserve a whole day for a visit.
It is better to come in the morning, on a weekday there are fewer visitors. In sunny weather it is very hot, there is a risk of getting burned. Not recommended for visiting with small children. |
The largest in Tenerife, the best in the world, the most popular and in many ways the best water entertainment center Siam Park is located on the south coast of the island. It will be fun for both children and adults, everyone can find entertainment to their liking. The water in the pools is warm all year round, so if the weather is bad at sea, feel free to go here.
The park has several world records:
- Giant dragon on the ride of the same name
- Lazy river with 8 meters rise
- Artificial waves up to 4 meters high
- The greenest of the water parks
But popularity has a downside – there are many visitors here, especially on weekends. Queues form, which is not at all comfortable in the heat and with children. It is best to come to the opening, preferably on a weekday – and there are no queues, and there is still no daytime heat.
It is important to note that the water park is not intended for recreation of very young children. Although there are children’s pools, there are much more entertainment for adults, and children are not allowed there. Therefore, with children under 7 years old, it is better to go to Aqualand.
I recommend bagel riding, preferably with a cheerful company. If you love water parks, you must visit!
Aqualand
Address | Avd. Austria 15, San Eugenio Alto, 38660 Costa Adeje |
Cost | Adults – 29 euros
Children from 5 to 10 years old – 21 euros Children from 3 to 4 years old – 12 euros Children under 3 free of charge |
Operating hours | Summer 10:00 – 18:00
Winter 10:00 – 17:00 |
Important to know! | Focused on families with small children.
Paid sunbeds. |
Aqualand, unlike Siam Park, is more focused on a relaxing family vacation. The ticket price is slightly lower, but there are much fewer people, no queues and a lot of entertainment for children of small stature and age. A dolphin show is held, which is considered the best in Tenerife.
If you are vacationing with small children, I definitely recommend visiting.
Food and entertainment
Cuisine
Thanks to the influx of tourists from all over the world, chefs have learned to cook almost any dish in order to please every foreigner. Therefore, the cuisine of Tenerife can be called international.
Canarian potatoes boiled in sea water and served with mojo sauces
You can eat in hotels by purchasing an all-inclusive package, but this is quite expensive and not the most interesting option.
Spending a little time searching for a restaurant and cafe of your choice will result in a much better result than in a hotel. Take a stroll through the streets near the hotel, there will surely be an Italian, Spanish or Chinese restaurant.
Be sure to visit the local Guachinche – local establishments on the island, offering culinary delights and wines of their own production. They can be found in small towns. The owners usually cook themselves, so the dishes are homemade and traditional.
Carnival
Carnival in Santa Cruz de Tenerife
The annual carnival in Tenerife is held in the capital of the island, in the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Festivities last from February to mid-March. All events are free, except for the culmination of the holiday – the choice of the carnival queen, a ticket here costs 10-15 euros.
In terms of scale, the carnival is second only to the Brazilian one. Many participants in original carnival costumes perform incendiary dances, have fun and sing songs.
If you want to attend the Queen’s Choice Ceremony, make sure you book your tickets in advance – they sell out quickly.
Flamenco show
Spain is traditionally associated with passion, its calling card is flamenco dance. In the concert hall of the Pyramid of Aron in Las Americas, incendiary dances with the participation of professional dancers last 2 hours, and the impressions remain for a lifetime.
Knightly tournaments in a medieval castle
In the evenings, a very unusual costume show is held in San Miguel Castle – a knightly tournament, where the audience actively participates in choosing the winner. The price includes an authentic dinner with chowder, chicken and drinks in metal mugs.
Activities
Boat trips
One of the most popular entertainments in Tenerife is boat trips to whales and dolphins.
Many sightseeing boats depart daily from the ports of the resort towns of Tenerife to the ocean, in search of whales and dolphins
Daily, many ships depart from the main ports in the resort towns for boat trips lasting from one to several hours. There are a huge number of options, so it is important to decide on your desires and expectations from the tour.
There are large and small ships, catamarans and trimarans, fast and not so fast.
There are even themed ships – the Viking Drakkar Ragnarok, the pirate ship Flipper Uno, the Oriental-style schooner Shogun, the fabulous Peter Pan.
You can go with a group tour or order an individual charter by renting the entire ship.
I have been on several boat trips and my favorite is the small catamaran “Bonadea 2” which departs from the port of Adeje Puerto Colon. It is very close to Pinta beach.
Dolphins in Tenerife
What did I like about it? The catamaran is small, there are few tourists, usually about 10-15 people. The duration of the boat trip is 2 hours, for me it’s not necessary anymore, during this time you will have time to see whales, dolphins, and even turtles if you’re lucky.
At a cost compared to competitors, it turns out to be inexpensive – 29 euros for adults and 14.5 for children under 11 years old. There is no free shuttle, but that’s a plus for me. Usually, additional expenses are included in the ticket price, plus there are no extra people from afar.
Jet ski safari
Ocean jet ski safaris are very popular in Tenerife. Sweep across the endless ocean at high speed, meet dolphins and turtles, swim in secluded bays – all this is possible on a sea safari. I recommend one of the largest companies in Tenerife for organizing outdoor activities, you can order directly here.
Yellow Submarine
In the port of San Miguel there is a real submarine, where anyone can explore the mysteries of the ocean. An hourly dive takes place to a depth of 30 meters, inside there are comfortable seats and large windows for each passenger. The submarine is absolutely safe both for children over 2 years old and for people of age and in “position”. Normal atmospheric pressure is maintained, no special training is required.
You are guaranteed to see many different species of fish and other marine life, because a diver swimming next to the submarine lures fish especially for this attraction.
Cost €53 for adults and €32 for children, 10% off when buying directly online.
Sea fishing
In addition to sea trips, there are many more activities in the ocean. Sea fishing is quite popular among compatriots. There is also a solid catch in the form of tuna and marlin, but no one can guarantee this. Often you can leave completely without a catch. In such a case, a lot depends on the captain, who must be chosen in advance. In the near future I will prepare an article on the best options for fishing in Tenerife.
Price of pleasure from 60 euros for a fisherman and 10-20 euros cheaper for guides.
Diving
The center of diving in Tenerife is the south, especially the southeast coast of the island. There are many dive centers here. Rays, moray eels, cuttlefish and octopuses are found all year round, and the lucky ones can see the angel shark. The best time for diving is from May to September, when the amount of marine life reaches its peak.
Paragliding (paragliding)
Paragliding in Tenerife
Tenerife is considered one of the best places in the world for paragliding.
No matter your experience, there are plenty of options for paragliding while enjoying breathtaking bird’s-eye views of the island.
Karting
For lovers of high speed and adrenaline, we can recommend karting, the track of which is located in Costa Adeje. It will be fun for children and adults.
Short summary
If you think about going or not going to the Canary Islands, definitely go. There is a place on the shore for any lazy and active thrill-seeker. A variety of services at the resort towns, local cuisine and much more that have not yet been tried and not seen.

Puerto de la Cruz
Tenerife’s original resort, Puerto de la Cruz, still retains its Canarian culture and roots. Admire the millennial dragon tree
The dragon tree in Icod de los Vinos is the oldest dragon tree in the Canary Islands, making it one of the main tourist attractions Tenerife. Its height is 18 meters, and the diameter of the base is 20 meters and it can be seen from San Marcos Square. However, if you want to see it up close, you will need to visit Drago Park.
At 19In 17, it was declared a National Monument and became one of the symbols of Tenerife. There are more dragon trees in other parts of the island, although none are as old as this one. Rugged with deep ravines, dotted with white-walled villages, and covered in lichen-drenched laurisilva forests, life in Anaga has changed little over the centuries. You will be in awe of the complex and dramatic viewsAll of Tenerife and Anaga Natural Park in one day – Popular and secret corners of the island, circular panoramas, relic forest and stories about conquistadors Tour of Las Cañadas National Park and El Teide volcano most visited Mysterious Teno Natural Park – Explore the beauties of the northwest coast of Tenerife and visit the pirate village of Masca
- Soak up the culture in Candelaria
Away from the tourist routes, charming Candelaria is the spiritual capital of Tenerife. Its iconic basilica is definitely worth a visit and is most notable for its frescoes and the statue of the Black Madonna. Plaza de la Patrona is another attraction with its majestic bronze statues representing the nine kings who ruled Tenerife before
Spanish conquest. Tapas bars and excellent bakeries make the city even more attractive
What can you do to make your vacation memorable?

I recommend Alexander, we went on a sightseeing tour with him. Excellent organization – everything was on time, everything was interesting, all our wishes were taken into account. Alexander talks about the history and plants of the island, answers questions of interest.
The next day they took another boat trip through it – everything was just as impeccable.

Review: Unexplored Tenerife
We arrived in Tenerife for the first time with my husband and two teenage children. We planned to spend 5 days in Costa Adeje and 5 days in Puerto de la Cruz. Since we are not experienced drivers, we decided not to rent a car, but to order a tour of the island. We found several options on the Internet, but we settled on “Unexplored Tenerife” with a guide Konstantin, because:
1. The tour covered the sights that we wanted to see (Santa Cruz, Teresitas Beach, Anaga Park, etc.)
2. The cost of the tour included 1-4 people. Many other options for a similar price were designed for 3 people + approx. 50 euros for each track. people
3. Possibility to change the place of the end of the tour. It was very convenient for us to combine sightseeing of the island and moving to the north of the island.
4. Many excellent reviews about the Russian-speaking guide Konstantin, as an interesting storyteller and a careful driver.
8 hours flew by unnoticed and comfortably, we often stopped to take photos, had a delicious lunch in one of the fish restaurants, learned a lot of new and interesting things about the functioning of the island, its history and features. The whole family was happy! I recommend!

This is due, firstly, to stunning landscapes, and secondly, to many fascinating museums, fortresses, churches, monuments, and entertainment centers. The famous Teide National Park, the beaches of the black volcanoes and several other attractions make the island a true holiday paradise that attracts tourists from all over the world.
The island covers an area of 2,034 km2. For comparison, the smallest island of the Canary Islands, El Hierro, covers only 269 km2, which is less than one seventh of the area of Tenerife. Mild temperatures, long beaches and diverse landscapes make Tenerife the most popular Canary Island in any case. The island is divided into districts and resorts. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the lively and culturally rich capital of the island that offers bars, museums, shops and serves as a launching pad for day trips to La Gomera, the unspoilt Canary Island with Garagione National Park and Masca Valley. In the Playa de la Americas area, you can watch whales and dolphins, while Costa Adeje is the perfect place for snorkeling with turtles or diving in caves.
The popular resorts of Los Cristianos and Los Gigantes attract travelers who want to relax with beautiful marinas and golden beaches. You can also explore the picturesque town of Puerto de la Cruz. No matter how and where you explore Tenerife, the island will impress you.
It is more convenient to see the sights of Tenerife on a rented car, and it is best to rent through Rentalcars.com and Myrentacar. com brokers. The first is a search engine for international rentals (from the well-known Booking.com), and the second works only with local rentals, where prices are lower. Both have been checked repeatedly, all rental conditions are known in advance when booking.
What to see in Tenerife — TOP 20
The special charm of the island and recreation in Tenerife comes from its nature, which is largely due to the volcanic origin of the Canary Island. Therefore, we advise you to start your trip with an acquaintance with the Teide volcano, along with the red rocks and landscapes of the national park of the same name, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Also visit the entertainment Siampark, Loroparc, Drago Park with the unique Dragon Tree, Cave of the Winds, Las Teresitas Beach, Puerto de la Cruz, Martianez Pools, Auditorio de Tenerife, Los Gigantes Rocks, Rural de Anaga Park , La Laguna, Palmetum, Casa de los Balcones, Nuestra Señora de Africa Market, Museum of Nature and Man, Hell’s Gorge, Aqualand, Monkey Park, El Caleton Natural Pools.
Teide National Park
Teide National Park
We invite you to get acquainted with one of the main attractions of the island – the 3718 meters high Teide volcano and its national park of the same name, which is the center of the island. Pico del Teide is the largest mountain in Spain and one of Tenerife’s most popular attractions. The Teide cable car, which runs at an altitude of 2356 meters to 3555 meters, will take you to the top of the volcano, from where you can enjoy a fantastic view. The cable car ride is truly breathtaking.
The stunning scenery has repeatedly been the backdrop of science fiction films such as Planet of the Apes and Star Wars. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007, Teide National Park has a total of 38 different hiking trails that can take anywhere from two hours to a full day. If you feel like taking a walk, it’s worth wrapping up in warm clothes to explore the rocky paths of the volcano. It is especially beautiful to walk along the Teide volcano in the evening, when you can admire the sunsets. You should definitely visit this unique natural site if you come to Tenerife!
Observatory del Teide
Observatory del Teide
Teide National Park is one of the best stargazing areas in the world. To study the starry sky in 1964, a huge observatory was installed in the park. The del Teide Observatory is the world’s largest solar observatory and has already been able to learn many astronomical features about the Sun. You can visit the observatory as part of an excursion and look at the stars through different telescopes: night, solar or microwave. I am glad that the tours are available in different languages, including Russian.
Siampark
Siampark
Siampark is one of Tenerife’s most popular attractions, especially with families. The famous water park in the town of Costa Adeje, located on the island, has been voted the best water park in the world for 6 times in a row, and, of course, not without reason. In total, 17 different attractions await you here, including a giant 28-meter slide, as well as a water jungle.
If you are not a fan of extreme sports and like quieter rides, then you can swim in the tropical May River or relax on the Siampark beach. And for younger visitors there is a special children’s area, consisting of towers, slides and bridges. The entire park is decorated in Thai style and the exotic vegetation will make you feel like you are in a fairy tale place. There are also five restaurants on the territory of Siampark, serving original and delicious dishes.
Costa Adeje is a cheap place to stay, here are the options:
- Fañabe Apartments. Rating – 9.4 based on 48 reviews. Price 35 €.
- Royal Bonanza Villas. Rating – 9.3 based on 28 reviews. Price 40 €.

- Flamingo Suites Hotel. Rating – 9.2 based on 86 reviews. Price 35 €.
Drago Park
Drago Park
The dragon tree in Icod de los Vinos, or Drago Milenario as the locals call it, is another attraction of Tenerife. With a height of 16 meters, a circumference of just under 20 meters at the base and an exceptional shape, it is a real tourist magnet. Surrounded by the green Drago Park, next to the parish church of San Marcos, the Dragon Tree is one of the most significant natural, cultural and historical attractions of the Canary Islands. It is believed that this tree, which is about 800 years old, is the oldest in the archipelago.
Drago Milenario is featured on most postcards, so every visitor to Tenerife should see him live at least once. Around this imposing plant, which is actually not a tree, but an asparagus, many fairy tales and legends wind. The red juice of this plant has healing properties. Visitors to Tenerife can buy Drago Milenario offshoots anywhere on the island, as well as grow and care for them at home. If you are planning your visit here, you should pay attention to the opening hours of Drago Park, which vary in summer and winter.
Cave of the Winds
Cave of the Winds
Not far from Drago Milenario you will find the next fascinating attraction in Tenerife. We are talking about the Cave of the Winds, or Cueva del Viento, as the Spaniards call it. At 17 kilometers long, the cave is the longest lava cave in Europe and second only to the lava caves in Hawaii worldwide. The volcanic tunnel is located in the same area as Drago Park, Icod de los Vinos. According to archaeologists, the cave originated over 27,000 years ago.
Only a small part is open to the public, where daily exciting excursions take place, where you can immerse yourself in the cave system. Stunning geomorphological formations create a labyrinth of winding passages that meander towards the center of the Earth. Exploring this place is very exciting! Interestingly, the government has introduced strict rules regarding the frequency and number of visitors so as not to lead to the alteration and destruction of special flora and fauna. So, excursions are held only for 16 people during the day, so you should take care of tickets in advance.
Puerto de la Cruz
Puerto de la Cruz
Next, we suggest you go to Puerto de la Cruz – the tourist center of the northern part of the island of Tenerife. The center of Puerto de la Cruz is the Plaza del Charco, a beautiful square adorned with a fountain and old laurel trees, and surrounded by numerous restaurants and cafes. It is also worth looking at the small church of Nuestra Senora, located right on the square and not far from the waterfront. Don’t forget to visit the Old Town of Puerto de la Cruz – which awaits you with colorful streets, historic colonial houses and many excellent typical Canarian restaurants.
Puerto de la Cruz has the best accommodation options for the price and reviews, here they are:
- El Palacete del Puerto Apartments. Rating – 9.2 based on 58 reviews. Price 25 €.
- Guest house “Materdei”. Rating – 9.3 based on 28 reviews. Price 30 €.
- The Cool Apartment. Rating – 9.8 based on 68 reviews. Price 20 €.
- Hotel Tigaiga. Rating – 9.2 based on 286 reviews. Price 40 €.
Martianez pools
Pools of Martianez
If you ever visit the resort of Puerto de la Cruz, you should definitely go to the pools with sea water on Lake Martianes. The unique outdoor pool was built back in the 70s by the famous architect and artist Cesar Manrique and has since become one of the favorite places for locals and tourists alike. Lake Martianes covers a total area of about 33,000 square meters, making it Europe’s largest natural seawater pool.
Visitors can enjoy an artificial lake, seven swimming pools, sun loungers under palm trees and plenty of water activities. There is also a huge offer of bars, restaurants and casinos where you can try your luck in the evening with a round of blackjack or poker.
Masca Valley
Masca Valley
Masca Valley, located on the northwest coast of Tenerife, is the island’s next attraction. The wild scenery of the Masca Valley, marked by rocky cliffs, wooded paths and waterfalls, is one of the most beautiful in Tenerife. The secluded gorge is perfect for hiking – the trail winds its way through steep mountain roads and ends at a black sandy beach, so you might want to bring a swimsuit. Against the backdrop of a green valley, you can take beautiful photos. Recommended!
Pyramids of Guimar
Pyramids of Guimar
Next, we invite you to learn about the history of the six mysterious lava stone pyramids in the Ethnographic Park of Guimar. The pyramids are located on the southeast coast of Tenerife, about 25 minutes from the capital of the island, Santa Cruz. Of course, these pyramids are much smaller than the Egyptian ones. Their height is only 4 meters and dates back only to the 19th century. Here you can also explore the only exhibition of poisonous plants in the Canary Islands at the Poison Garden. There is a children’s playground, a cafe and a gift shop on site.
Basilica of Candelaria
Basilica of Candelaria
Since Tenerife belongs to Spain and is therefore Catholic, the island is rich in beautiful churches. The Basilica of Candelaria, or also called the Basilica of Nuestra Senora, is definitely one of the most attractive buildings in Tenerife. The church stands on the seashore in the town of Candelaria, about 20 kilometers south of Santa Cruz. Its location right on the open sea even reminds a little Piazza San Marco in Venice. The interior of the church should also be given special attention: the basilica is richly decorated with gold ornaments.
Las Teresitas beach
Las Teresitas beach
Tenerife has more than 40 magnificent beaches. So it is simply impossible to single out one of the most beautiful here. But, of course, some of the beaches made it to the list of the island’s top attractions, including the famous Las Teresitas. Less than two kilometers long, this sandy beach in the northeast of Tenerife is the perfect place to relax.
To meet the high standards of beauty, Las Teresitas beach has been covered with golden yellow sand and additionally planted with palm trees. Cozy sun loungers are perfect for sunbathing, snacks and cocktails are available at the various beach bars, and fresh seafood is served at the restaurants. On the artificial beach of Las Teresitas, you can also enjoy various water activities or play on the sand with your children.
There are many affordable apartments near Las Teresitas beach, here are the best ones:

The rocks are one of the main attractions of the Teide National Park, protected by UNESCO in Tenerife. Rocks created by years of volcanic activity are mostly known for their spectacular growth and special shapes. Each rock has its own nickname.
Among the most famous rocks are the “Rock of Chinchado”, known as the “Finger of God”, and the imposing La Catedral – the highest and most popular rock with a height of 200 meters among climbers. The best way to enjoy the incredible view is to go hiking in the valley, which will take about 2 hours.
Los Gigantes Rocks
Los Gigantes Rocks
In the area of Santiago del Teide, in the west of Tenerife, you will find the amazing Los Gigantes Rocks, which are part of the Teno Landscape Park. People come to this picturesque place to enjoy the incredible views. And on the rocks themselves, even the eponymous seaside resort of Los Gigantes is located.
During the boat trip, if you’re lucky, you can even watch whales and dolphins in their natural environment, which can be seen here almost throughout the year. And passionate divers love to come here to dive to a depth of 30 meters and admire the impressive underwater world with their own eyes.
Parque Rural de Anaga
Parque Rural de Anaga
If you miss the rocky volcanic landscape of Tenerife, be sure to take a trip to the Anaga Mountains, where the Rural de Anaga Biosphere Park is also located. Here in the east of Tenerife you can go hiking or climbing, explore the idyllic villages along the trails and admire the rich flora and fauna, including the huge laurel forest of the Tertiary period, which, due to its value, is one of the most important natural treasures in Europe. Tourist routes have different lengths, so they are suitable for both beginners and experienced hikers.
