We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

Fuerteventura experiences extreme seasonal variation in the perceived humidity.

The muggier period of the year lasts for 4.7 months, from June 22 to November 13, during which time the comfort level is muggy, oppressive, or miserable at least 18% of the time. The month with the most muggy days in Fuerteventura is August, with 20.5 days that are muggy or worse.

The month with the fewest muggy days in Fuerteventura is February, with 0. 2 days that are muggy or worse.

Methodology

For each hour between 8:00 AM and 9:00 PM of each day in the analysis period (1980 to 2016), independent scores are computed for perceived temperature, cloud cover, and total precipitation. Those scores are combined into a single hourly composite score, which is then aggregated into days, averaged over all the years in the analysis period, and smoothed.

Our cloud cover score is 10 for fully clear skies, falling linearly to 9 for mostly clear skies, and to 1 for fully overcast skies.

Our precipitation score, which is based on the three-hour precipitation centered on the hour in question, is 10 for no precipitation, falling linearly to 9 for trace precipitation, and to 0 for 0.04 inches of precipitation or more.

Our tourism temperature score is 0 for perceived temperatures below 50°F, rising linearly to 9 for 65°F, to 10 for 75°F, falling linearly to 9 for 80°F, and to 1 for 90°F or hotter.

Our beach/pool temperature score is 0 for perceived temperatures below 65°F, rising linearly to 9 for 75°F, to 10 for 82°F, falling linearly to 9 for 90°F, and to 1 for 100°F or hotter.

Definitions of the growing season vary throughout the world, but for the purposes of this report, we define it as the longest continuous period of non-freezing temperatures (≥ 32°F) in the year (the calendar year in the Northern Hemisphere, or from July 1 until June 30 in the Southern Hemisphere).

Temperatures in Fuerteventura are sufficiently warm year round that it is not entirely meaningful to discuss the growing season in these terms. We nevertheless include the chart below as an illustration of the distribution of temperatures experienced throughout the year.

The information on this site is provided as is, without any assurances as to its accuracy or suitability for any purpose. Weather data is prone to errors, outages, and other defects. We assume no responsibility for any decisions made on the basis of the content presented on this site.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

weather by month, temperature, precipitation, when to go

On the island of Fuerteventura, the climate is very mild and desert, with very mild, spring-like winters and warm, sunny summers.

The island is particularly exposed to the northeast trade winds, which blow steadily throughout the year, especially in the afternoon. The waves that are generated by the wind are particularly appreciated by surfers.

The temperature in Fuerteventura is very mild, spring-like much of the year: during the day, it ranges from 21 °C (69 °F) in January to 27/28 °C (81/82 °F) between July and September.

The temperature generally tends to stay around the average, however, from December to March, there can be some cool days, with highs below 20 °C (68 °F). On the coldest days of the year, which typically occur in February, the temperature typically drops to 10/11 °C (50/52 °F) at night, while the maximum remains around 18/19 °C (64/66 °F). The coldest record after 1980 is 8.5 °C (47.5 °F), recorded in March 1988.

On the other hand, a hot, dry wind from Africa can sometimes blow, which can reduce visibility by carrying dust or sand from the desert, and brings abnormally high temperatures, which usually lasts three or four days; this phenomenon has become more frequent in recent years due to global warming. Together with nearby Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is particularly exposed to this hot wind, being close to Morocco.

The heat is felt especially in inland areas. The heat record in the island is 45.5 °C (114 °F), recorded in July 1994 in La Oliva, while in Puerto del Rosario, located on the east coast, the temperature reached 43 °C (109.5 °F) in July 1975 and 41.5 °C (106.5 °F) in July 2012. The same year, the temperature reached 38.5 °C (101.5 °F) in October, while in 2017, it reached 36.5 °C (97.5 °F) in May.

Here are the average temperatures at the airport of Puerto del Rosario.

Along the coast, rainfall amounts to less than 100 millimeters (4 inches) per year, the majority of which occurring from October to March. Unlike other islands of the Canaries, in the interior there are no mountains that can cause a significant increase in precipitation on the slopes exposed to the wind. In the center-north there are hills that exceed 600 meters (2,000 ft), while in the south, in the Jandía peninsula, there is the highest peak of the island, the Pico de la Zarza, 807 meters (2,647 ft) high.

Here is the average precipitation.

The sun in Fuerteventura shines all year round, however, in addition to the low pressure systems that can pass over the island from October to March, in summer, cloud banks can form on the Atlantic Ocean and reach the island. On the northern coast, and especially on the hill slopes exposed to the north, local clouds and mists can form. The south coast is therefore the sunniest one.

Here are the average daily sunshine hours at the airport.

Owing to the cool Canary Current, which flows in the ocean to the west of Morocco, the sea in Fuerteventura is cool: the sea temperature ranges from 18 °C (64 °F) in February and March to 22. 5 °C (72.5 °F) in September and October. This means that you can try to swim even in winter, at least if you are not sensitive to cold, while the sea is still a bit cool in summer.

Best Time

Typically, Fuerteventura is appreciated for beach tourism and surfing, therefore, on the understanding that, owing to the mild climate, you can go all year round, the best time is from May to mid-October. For the low rainfall, however, after all, the island lends itself to this type of activity also in the second half of October and in November, when the sea is still relatively warm, although the first Atlantic disturbances can bring some cloudiness and some rain, which can happen also in winter. On the other hand, in autumn and winter, Atlantic depressions can bring high waves, generated by westerly or southerly winds, which are different from the typical trade winds, and that can be appreciated by surfers.

In winter, there is often the sun and temperatures are pleasant, but it is not always warm enough to go to the beach, in addition, there may be periods with clouds and rain, although they are quite rare.

What to pack in the suitcase

In winter: bring light clothes for the day, a sweater and a jacket for the evening, and possibly a raincoat or umbrella.

In summer: bring summer clothes, but also a scarf for the wind, a light sweatshirt, a light jacket for the evening and for windy afternoons; comfortable shoes for hiking.

Weather in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is the second largest island of the Canary archipelago after Tenerife. The volcanic island will be a great destination for a relaxing, luxurious holiday among unusual landscapes.

Holidays in Fuerteventura are possible all year round – it is never too cold or too hot here, like in other Canary Islands. However, the best time to travel to these parts is traditionally considered the period from May to October, when it is warmest here.

The climatic conditions of Fuerteventura remind many tourists of Florida and Mexico combined – indeed, these famous areas are located at the same latitude. An interesting difference between Fuerteventura and other islands of the archipelago is the local landscapes: huge dunes, unusually long sandy beaches … But there are not so many large green areas here – it’s easier to say, there are almost none. But on the other hand, after the first visit to the local beaches, you will understand that there is simply no better place for sunbathing in Spain!

Tourism began to develop in Fuerteventura relatively recently, so the island is not yet crowded with vacationers, and after dark, life on almost the entire island stops. The busiest nightlife is in the resort of Corralejo, although compared to the Costa del Sol and Ibiza, Fuerteventura is an incredibly calm place with many pubs where peaceful Europeans of age sip beer for the future.

Fuerteventura is a paradise for those who love nature, space, mountains, but there are not so many historical sights here. The natural beauties of the island include the fantastic Natural Corralejo Natural Park and the beautiful Mount Tindaya, which was once considered magical and sacred. No less interesting for tourists are the large Oasis Park Zoo, El Cotillo Fort with a wonderful observation deck, as well as several small museums and ancient majestic buildings in different parts of the island.
