Sports port of La Caleta Velez Malaga Costa del Sol

The small Mediterranean town of Veles Malaga was founded by Phoenician navigators in the 8th century BC as a seaside trading post engaged in fish processing. Veles Malaga received the main development, like other small settlements in the province of Malaga, at the time of its entry into the ancient Muslim state of Al Andalus, from the 9th to the 15th centuries AD. Its ancient status as a walled city can be judged by the Arab castle, from the Nazari era, towering over the city.

From the moment it was built in 1972 until the end of the 90s of the XX century, the Port of La Caleta de Velez Malaga was a fairly large fishing port on the east coast of the Costa del Sol. The construction of the tourist infrastructure of the eastern part of the province of Malaga began later than the western one.

At a time when such resorts as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Marbella, Velez Malaga and other cities of the eastern part of the Costa del Sol were already well known, it was in the shade. With the exception of the resort of Nerja, where at 19In 59, they discovered one of the largest caves in Europe, Nerja, which has become one of the main attractions of Andalusia.

However, at the end of the 70s of the XX century, investment companies paid attention to this part of the coast. Gradually, with the development of tourism, hotels and modern residential complexes began to be built here, and a tourist infrastructure was formed. Along with the development of the resort, the function of Porta La Caleta de Velez Malaga has also changed. From purely fishing grounds, its internal structure has been modernized to accommodate sports boats, although small fishing boats still moor here.

Today, the sports port of La Caleta de Velez Malaga, capable of receiving modern sea yachts up to 25 meters long, has 227 convenient modern berths, about 50 of which are intended for rent to sea travelers. Berths are equipped with electricity, drinking water, telecommunications. In addition to gas stations, car parking, a ship repair dock with a 150-ton gantry crane is always at your service, the territory is guarded around the clock by the security service.

Today, the fishing fleet of the port of La Caleta de Velez Malaga is considered one of the largest in Andalusia. It has 83 fishing trawlers, the main catch of which is: anchovies, sardines, mackerel, squid and other seafood. More than 6 tons of fresh fish worth more than 10 million euros are sold annually at the port’s fish market.
