Corralejo Windsurf Holidays

Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands, although one of the least developed. The Island has some stunning topography including vast sand dunes, huge golden beaches and breathtaking volcanic scenery in the interior. Broadly speaking most of the best beaches are along the East coast, the rugged West coast is more rocky and open to the swell of the Atlantic (great for surfing). The North is where you will find the main tourist resort of Corralejo, in the South East you will find some quieter beach resorts (including the windsurf resorts of Costa Calma and Sotavento). Corralejo, being the main tourist hub of the island, has a lot of amenities in the way of restaurants, bars and shopping. In some areas in central Corralejo it can be a little ’18-30′, but these areas are easily avoided. 

You arrive at the airport in Puerto Rosario and head North to Corralejo (25 minutes), by pre arranged private transfer, or car hire. Generally it is a good idea to have car hire although this is not necessary. Fuerteventura and the Canaries are are great year around windsurf holiday destination within easy reach of the UK (around 3. 5 hours flight), and a lot of other European departure points. This is one of the most wind reliable short-haul windsurf holiday destinations from March to September, but it can also be great in the winter months, just not quite as ‘guaranteed’ wind. 

A windsurf holiday to Corralejo in Fuerteventura is suitable for all levels and holiday types, including families, singles and couples, of all windsurf abilities. There is a special windsurf lagoon for beginners, a very long and stunning windsurf beach for improvers, plus some small and easy waves if you want it. This really is a great windsurf holiday location to satisfy a wide range of abilities.

As with all of our location we are meticulous about which accommodation we work with, and will only suggest properties that we have personally inspected and know to be good. In Corralejo we have a superb collection of properties to include a stunning deluxe beach resort, spacious families villas and a ‘cool’ boutique hotel in the centre of town. The Windsurfing At Corralejo

The main windsurfing beach, and where we have our partner windsurf school in Corralejo, is called Flag Beach. This whole beach, and a large part of the surrounding area, is a nature reserve and is stunningly beautiful. The only structure on the whole beach is the windsurf centre and a small beach bar. In this location the wind generally blows side to side on from the left. At low tide some rocks are exposed in-between sandy areas, at higher tides the whole launch area is sand. Generally there are some small waves along this area, although there are also some great flat water sections. The waves are more prevalent in Spring and Autumn, from May to August the whole windsurf beach becomes quite flat.

For beginner and early improvers then the windsurf lagoon is the best place. Our partner windsurf centre offer half day trips to the lagoon, which include pick up from your hotel, rental and lessons if needed. This is great fun, a good way to improve your level in a safe and social environment. This is also perfect for families with kids that want to have a go.

The Wind In Corralejo

The windiest season in Fuerteventura is in the summer, between April and September, when a big high pressure stays over the Atlantic and a low over the Sahara. However, there is generally wind all year around with it just being less reliable outside of this main wind season. For the winter months it is better to head South, to Costa Calma or Sotavento, where the wind is accelerated and can be very strong even in the winter. 

The wind in the North of the island, at Corralejo, tends to be lighter (around 20-30 knots) and much more consistent than in the South of the island, where summer wind conditions can get up to 40 knots + regularly. The wind in the South is also cross-off shore and can be quite gusty at times.

Fuerteventura offers a wide types for the non-windsurfer; don’t forget this is a premier holiday destination for many holidaymakers. The key activities are surfing, diving, horse riding, trekking and cycling. Excursions in and around Fuerteventura are popular, especially round Lobos island, mountain biking and surfing the world class breaks. You can also visit Lanzarote, which is only 45 minutes ferry ride away, travel to Lobos.

Taster

Here we are not talking about a full windsurfing course but an opportunity to try a wonderful sport and test yourself on this reactive board carried by the wind.

Are you in Fuerteventura and want to add some spice to your holidays? Then our taster formula is certainly for you: we offer 3 hours taster lessons during which you can learn the basics of windsurfing: we will start with a quick theory part and then continue practicing what we have learned on the beach in the water.

Taster

Private lessons or in a group (maximun 4 students per instructor)

At the end of the three hours, you may even decide that windsurfing is not for you, but trust me, this happens very rarely! Most likely you’ll discover a fascinating and exciting world instead, and you’ll wonder why did you wait so long to try this sport.

Intermediate Windsurf Course

Private or group lessons (maximun 4 students per instructor)

What you will learn with this course:
If you recognize yourself within this description, participating in this course will improve your skills, so that you can navigate even in the most challenging wind conditions.

It is, therefore, the natural continuation of the beginners course, to acquire greater safety with a medium/strong wind in tacking, jibe and drifting, to start using more powerful sails with the use of the harness – thanks to which you will avoid to tire your arms. During these lessons, you will begin to use boards without drifting, to be able to experience the thrill of the first glides.

The intermediate course is a personalized course: it will then start with a level assessment by our instructors, who will then be able to plan the following lessons according to your real needs.

If you are interested in this advanced course it means that you already have an intermediate level of windsurfing, and that you want to improve yourself and learn new techniques to increase your confidence in medium-strong wind conditions.

Advanced windsurfing course

Private lesson (1 student/1 instructor)

What you will learn with this course:
For our advanced courses we leave the group lessons behind to offer you individual lessons, during which you will be face to face with your instructor. In short, we are guaranteeing the highest level of customization, so that you can get the maximum performance.

With these lessons you will be able to perfect your power jibe and fast turn, you will begin to glide with your feet in the foot straps, you will learn the water start and you will approach the first jumps, forward loop and back loop. Not bad, right?

  3 day windsurf lesson This was my first time windsurfing and everyone from the school helped me with organising/planning of my trip. I had 3 days of lessons and my instructor Paolo was very patient, he explained everything I needed to know from basic wind direction, understand how to balance on the board, repeating multiple times the basics of Jibe and Tack and being on my side in every moment watching on me and giving advise and directions. He is really experienced wind-surfer, very easy going and full of funny jokes. I had the best times learning and enjoying the beautiful island.   Kitesurfing lessons I booked a 4-day kite-surfing course. I’m a beginner and the instructors took me at my own pace, paying attention to safety but also putting emphasis on having fun. I learned lots, building step by step in knowledge and skills and now am keen to get more practice in, using what I learned with them, so that one day I too will sail!
  The organisation and instructors are expert and friendly. and did their utmost to ensure that I had my lessons (which of course are weather dependent). I’d certainly recommend.

  Great surfing lesson! Our instructor Ivo gave very helpful tips and encouragement. We did a warm-up and then incrementally worked our way up to standing. El Cotillo had quite nice gentle waves for beginners and was sandy bottom.

  So much fun! It was my third time trying to learn how to surf (with different schools) and I have to say that Plinio – the instructor was very good at giving lession on the ground and in the water! Despite of not being too much confident in the water I managed to stand up on the board and to catch the wave, more waves! Plinio constantly had eyes on us, making sure we are all safe and prepred for the waves! The best part apart surfing was relaxed atmosphere in the group and a lots of laugh also thanks to Plinio and his approach to “first time surfers”, who dont know even how to put on the surfing shoes :)))

The bay of Matas Blancas is one of the most suitable spots for windsurfing in Fuerteventura. Our watersport station is located right on the beach with an amazing view and lounge area. Lots of newcomers have learned how to windsurf and enjoy the ocean to the full!

We use specific beginner windsurfing boards from BIC and Point 7 sails. Also, our professional instructors will constantly assist and coach you during throughout the lesson. At the end of the day, you will be debriefed regarding the lessons and pointer out what is next for you

– You will be picked up from Fuerteventura airport and taken to the windsurf hostel
– You’ll have time to check into your room, meet your fellow windsurfers and make your own arrangements for dinner in the evening

– This is a modern and well-equipped hostel just 15 minutes from the town centre
– There are 4 bedrooms that include double, twin and mixed dorm rooms with shared bathrooms
– Plenty of social common areas for guests to hang out and relax in; living room, kitchen, upstairs terrace and outdoor dining area
– The kitchen is fully equipped for you to make your own meals but please note there is no dishwasher or washing machine
– This hostel has a small pool and terrace area for cooling off and/or sunbathing

Windsurfing

– Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before getting ready for your windsurf lessons
– Lessons might take place at the lagoon in El Cottillo which is about a 40 minute drive depending on weather conditions
– You will have 4 hours of windsurfing lessons each day for 5 days

Overview of Flag Beach Spot (Corralejo)

Flag Beach Spot is located 2 km from the Corralejo resort in the northern part of Fuerteventura. The beach stretches along the highway, on the other side – the dunes of El Jable (El Jable).
The Corralejo resort itself, where Flag Beach is located, is very popular among outdoor enthusiasts – there are a lot of young people here, and indeed people of all ages who are fond of windsurfing, kitesurfing and diving. In addition, the conditions only contribute to this. The channel between the islands of Lobos, Lanzarote and the island of Fuerteventura accelerates the trade winds, as a result of which a strong wind is constantly blowing here. All this, along with the excellent water conditions available at the spot, makes Flag Beach one of the best places for windsurfing and kitesurfing in the Canary Islands.
True place is more suitable for intermediate level and above. Although training is also carried out here – in an organized manner, beginners are taken a little further from Flag Beach to a more suitable place for this.
Due to its proximity to the coast of Africa, the season here is year-round. The best conditions for windsurfing and kitesurfing are from March to November, when the wind force is at its strongest. The best waves are in winter.

Beach holidays: Island Spain

Black beaches of Tenerife, moon landscapes of Lanzarote, party Ibiza, respectable Mallorca – all this is a beautiful island Spain.

Volcano and butterflies

Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary archipelago. In its south it is slightly hotter and more sunny than in the north. The north is the ideal place for those who like to relax in the bosom of nature, surrounded by lush greenery. The most famous beach of the island with black volcanic sand is Playa Jardin in Puerto de la Cruz. It stretches along the coast for more than a kilometer. And not far from the capital of the island, the city of Santa Cruz, is Las Teresitas – a beach with golden sand, specially brought from the Sahara.

From Puerto de la Cruz, you can reach the highest point of the island, Mount Teide. Frozen lava fields and the peak of the volcano itself (3128 m) will amaze even experienced travelers. Also worth a visit is Icod de los Vinos, where wine and liqueurs are produced. At the same time, you can see the oldest dragon tree in Europe – it is already over 2000 years old. By the way, the Butterfly Park Mariposario del Drago is located next door. Children will surely enjoy looking at the palm-sized colorful beauties that flutter freely around and are not at all afraid of people.

An excellent promenade, colorful houses, palm trees, flowers, cafes hidden in the narrow streets – wandering around Puerto de la Cruz is a pleasure. This is its undoubted advantage. In the southern part – in Playa de las Americas – it is noisy and not so picturesque.

Tenerife’s two main attractions are Loro Park amusement and nature park and Siam Park water amusement park.

Lunar landscapes and windsurfing

East of Tenerife are the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. You must have seen the desert lunar landscapes of Lanzarote in Pedro Almodovar’s film Broken Embraces. This island is suitable for quiet contemplation and secluded beach doing nothing. The coastline – more than 340 km – is entirely white sandy beaches. The best resorts: in the south – Jandia, in the north – Corralejo. But the island of Fuerteventura, blown through by the winds, is a great place for windsurfers. In addition, the strait between Fuerteventura and Lobos Island is great for diving. In between swims and dives, you can visit the La Lajita cactus park or the village of Betancuria, which is located right in the crater of an extinct volcano.

Boutiques and eco-trails

As in Tenerife, the central mountain range divides the island of Gran Canaria into two parts – the dry and sunny south and the humid north. In just a day, walking around the island, you will see the hot desert coast and green valleys, cross the subtropical forest and climb the mountain peaks, which even in summer can be covered with snow.

Most of the beaches are located in the southern part of the island. The largest resort center – Maspalomas – also includes a picturesque dune beach, stretching for 6 km. Another increasingly popular resort – Meloneras – will especially please connoisseurs of shopping. Its streets abound with designer shops and fashion boutiques. The only “but” of Gran Canaria is the abundance of noisy compatriots on the local beaches, be prepared for this. Gran Canaria will delight those who like to wander through the museum halls. Among the must-see places is the Canario Museum with a large collection of artifacts from the pre-Columbian era, mummies, tools and jewelry of the Guanches – the tribes that once inhabited the Canaries. In addition, the House of Columbus and the Atlantic Center for Contemporary Art in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

From May to September it is warm and dry in the Canary Islands. The air temperature does not drop below +27 °C, and the water in the Atlantic Ocean warms up to +23 °C

Attractions and Blue Flags

The largest and most popular of all the islands of the Balearic archipelago is, of course, Mallorca. The main flow of tourists rushes to Magaluf.
