La gomera, Spain – October Weather

La Gomera is part of Spain’s Canary Islands, sitting between Tenerife and La Palma. At just 370km², it is one of the smallest islands and retains a quiet, peaceful ambience, with mountains and walking trails rather than mass tourism. Travelers come here to relax and revel in the beautiful natural surroundings.

The island of La Gomera is basked in sub-tropical Mediterranean weather all year round thanks to its location in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Africa. The month of October, while the middle of autumn in continental Europe, is still warm in La Gomera. This makes it a popular holiday destination for those wishing to escape the cooling climate of other countries

What’s The Weather Like In La Gomera In October

Temperature

Visitors to La Gomera can enjoy an average temperature of around 23°C in October, though highs can still reach a pleasant 26°C on some days. Low temperatures are beginning to fall during this month, but hardly ever drop below 19°C, which is still warm enough to enjoy all of La Gomera’s outdoor attractions in comfort. Walkers should take into account the colder temperatures experienced in the mountains though, and dress accordingly.

Sea Temperature

If you’re planning to visit the beach, you can still swim in the sea around La Gomera in October. The Atlantic Ocean remains warm and swimmer-friendly at 24°C.

Sunshine Hours

Sunbathing is still an option too, as the island enjoys ten hours of sunshine each day and there’s a 51% chance of a sunny day.

Rain

While the weather is still great in October, there is an increased chance of rainfall, which holiday makers should take into consideration. October sees an average of 145mm of precipitation with 14 wet days throughout the month. However, there’s only a 13% chance of rain on average, so many days will be dry and bright.

October is often said to be one of the best times to visit La Gomera, with temperatures that are warm but not as hot as the sizzling temperatures of the peak summer season. Weather conditions in October are perfect for a walking holiday.

La Gomera Hotels In October

Pension Candelaria

For a truly budget-friendly lodging option, the Pension Candelaria in Valle Gran Rey is a natural choice. The rooms at this house are both spacious and modern and each has a balcony to enjoy the sunny days in La Gomera. Alternatively, the common terrace is available to relax and meet other travelers. While the hotel is located in the city, it is quiet and relatively undisturbed, especially when compared to the other Canary Islands.

Residencial El Llano

Residencial El Llano is also located in Valle Gran Rey, one of the most beautiful parts of the island. This hotel is set among lush gardens and benefits from its own pool. Rooms here are elegantly decorated and well-equipped for a self-catering stay, with kitchens and cooking facilities. Nearby are plenty of shops, restaurants and bakeries while the beach is just a short walk away.

La Gomera Beaches For October

While many areas of Europe are too cold to hit the beach in October, La Gomera still has perfect beach weather. La Gomera locals tend to only visit the island’s beaches during the summer, so they should be relatively quiet at this time of year too.

Playa de la Caleta

Visitors to La Gomera will be delighted by the peaceful bays and relaxed stretches of sand. One of the nicest beaches on the island is Playa de la Caleta on the north shore. The beach lies in a wind-protected bay backed by rugged cliffs and features picnic areas where visitors can enjoy lunch.

Bars And Restaurants

La Cabana

The lively town of San Sebastian is one of the best places for food and drink on the island of La Gomera. For genuine Canarian food, head to La Cabana which is located just outside of the town centre. The walk will build up your appetite for the delicious dishes on offer here, which include rabbit and squid. There’s also a great selection of wine.

El Pajar la Gomera

If you’re on a budget, El Pajar la Gomera is a great value option in the town centre, just a short walk from the Museo Arqueológico de La Gomera. Though it looks rather unassuming from the outside, this restaurant has a wonderfully traditional feel with a beautiful terrace area that’s decked with plants. With an owner that’s passionate about fishing, the seafood and fresh fish dishes are a must-try here.

Tasca Restaurante El Carraca

Further north, in the area of Vallehermoso, Tasca Restaurante El Carraca is a fabulous choice for dinner. The menu here is large and varied, with many typically Spanish dishes such as paella and local tapas dishes. After a tasty meal, guests can retire to the bar for a glass of wine or a beer.

Things To Do In La Gomera In November

Virgin of Guadalupe San Sebastian

In August, the Canary Islands often celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe San Sebastian.  The city of San Sebastian has its own patron saint and celebrates largely at sea, with a statue of the Virgin Mary being moved via boat along the coast. Interestingly, this celebration is only observed every five years, but you might be lucky enough to witness it if you time your visit right. If you miss out on the celebration, don’t worry; the picturesque village of San Sebastian de la Gomera itself has attractions that merit a visit. This small town is filled with quaint, winding streets where you can wander and find historic towers and buildings.

Boating Organisations

If you’d like to enjoy the view of La Gomera from the sea, consider booking an excursion on one of the local boating organisations. These companies offer tours and boats for hire that include fishing as well as dolphin and whale watching.  Whale and dolphin watching is usually best during the spring, but there is no time of the year that isn’t worth your time.

We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The chance that a given day will be muggy in San Sebastián de la Gomera is very rapidly decreasing during October, falling from 42% to 20% over the course of the month.

For reference, on August 29, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 56% of the time, while on January 14, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 0% of the time.

We draw particular cautious attention to our reliance on the MERRA-2 model-based reconstructions for a number of important data series. While having the tremendous advantages of temporal and spatial completeness, these reconstructions: (1) are based on computer models that may have model-based errors, (2) are coarsely sampled on a 50 km grid and are therefore unable to reconstruct the local variations of many microclimates, and (3) have particular difficulty with the weather in some coastal areas, especially small islands.

We further caution that our travel scores are only as good as the data that underpin them, that weather conditions at any given location and time are unpredictable and variable, and that the definition of the scores reflects a particular set of preferences that may not agree with those of any particular reader.

For all data based on historical data, we’ve averaged the data from the past 11 years (2010-2020). For example, for the hourly temperature at 10am, we’ve looked at the temperature at 10am on every day in October (e.g., October 1, October 2, etc. in 2010, 2011, etc.) and took the arithmetic mean. We did not smooth the data, so for example, our daily temperature line will have some randomness due to the fact that weather is random in the first place.

La Gomera is located in the Atlantic Ocean and belongs to the Canary Islands. With a population of almost 20,000 people and an area of about 230 miles², it is significantly smaller than its neighbouring islands La Palma and Tenerife. Of the seven main islands of the Canary Islands, only El Hierro is smaller in area than La Gomera.

The main town is San Sebastian de La Gomera. The distance to the Spanish mainland is 810 miles, about 190 miles to the African mainland. The highest mountain on the island is the Garajonay, whose natural reserve makes up around ten percent of the island.

Like all Canary Islands, La Gomera is volcanic in origin and consists mainly of old lava, rocks and tuff. The flora of the island is quite varied and varies considerably depending on the altitude.

In the centre of La Gomera lies the Garajonay National Park with a dense cloud forest, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Climate on La Gomera

La Gomera, like the rest of the Canary Islands, enjoys a very mild climate. In the year La Gomera comes on more than 2900 sun hours, so that the yearly average temperature lies between pleasant 18 °C to 25 °C. It is not for nothing that the Canary Islands are considered to be the place with the highest number of hours of sunshine in Europe. The maximum temperatures in summer are 29 °C, at night they only fall below 17 °C in January and February.

Especially the mild evenings are ideal for exploring beautiful restaurants and beach bars. In the months January to April the sea hardly cools down, so one finds super bathing temperatures almost the whole year round. The month with the most precipitation of the year is December, here it can come to rainfalls of up to 1.06 in.

When to go to La Gomera?

The best time to visit La Gomera is between July and November. In the spring months of March, April and May the temperatures begin to rise to 23 °C to 25 °C, where the bathing season on the beautiful Canary Island begins. The northern regions of the island are more suitable for hiking and trekking. The many hiking routes lead through a breathtaking landscape, for example in the Garajonay National Park.

In these months you have the perfect conditions for extensive hiking tours. Also in autumn the temperatures are still pleasant, but the probability of precipitation is a little higher than in spring. However, you should have warmer clothes in your luggage, as it could get colder in the mountains.

For holidaymakers who want to enjoy the sun, the best time to travel is of course from July to October. Nothing stands in the way of extensive sunbathing and bathing.

Highlights and Attractions

Like La Palma, La Gomera has been spared from mass tourism and is the perfect island for nature lovers. An absolute must for all La Gomera vacationers is the visit of the Garajonay National Park. Here you can make wonderful walks and be impressed by the silence and beauty of the place.

Also a tour on the Garajonay is worthwhile, since one has a fantastic view over the island from here. We also recommend a visit to the “Valley of the Great King”, the municipality of Valle Gran Rey. The valley offers an exotic view thanks to a terraced cultural landscape with a multitude of banana plantations. For beach lovers, a visit to the beach of San Sebastian de La Gomera is also recommended.

October Weather in La Gomera, Spain – 2022 – Winter Sun Expert

If you know of the autonomous community of the Canary Islands, Spain, then you may have heard of La Gomera. This island is the second smallest among these groups of islands which lie off the African coast in the Atlantic Ocean. The island has a small population with roughly 22,000 inhabitants who have a unique means of communicating with one another from miles away.

Before the Spaniard settlers arrived on these islands, they were inhabited by indigenous people called Guanches who had a rich and amazing culture. They worshipped their god at a sanctuary in the highest point of the island. Archeological explorations into the sanctuary have found altars, pyres, and other ceremonial constructions. This mountainous island has steep slopes and an interesting half-cut orange shape.

      Other data

All data related to the position of the Sun (such as sunrise and sunset) are calculated using astronomical formulas from Jean Mius’ Astronomical Algorithms, 2nd Ed. .

All other weather data, including cloudiness, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar energy flux, are taken from the MERRA-2 New Time Retrospective Analysis. This reanalysis combines various measurements over a wide area in a modern global meteorological model to reconstruct hourly weather history around the world on a 50 km grid.

Land use data are from the SHARE Global Land Cover Monitoring Network database published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Hotel in San Sebastian de la Gomera

Torre Del Conde is located in the center of San Sebastian de la Gomera, 200 meters from the marina.
In all of the reviews that I have done, I think that this hotel has been the most harshly rated.
It is way above low 8’s and, in my opinion, is worthy of 9.5+ as I can not fault in any way (booking.com does not facilitate subtleties in ratings any more).
The location could not be more central, the price was great value and all of the staff at reception and breakfast were lovely.
The room was pristine and spacious, breakfast was fine and I had a lovely ovely view of the Torre with the sea to the side.
