Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote – Price, Opening times & How to Get There

View of the White Pool – supposedly only the King of Spain can take a swim in it!

Jameos del Agua is a MUST SEE when visiting Lanzarote and it’s probably the place that shows best the vision that Cesar Manrique had for the entire island.

The white pool is what ties everything together and creates a contrast in the space. We can’t say for sure, but it’s said that only the King of Spain has the right to swim in the pool inside Jameos del Agua.

What is Jameos del Agua

The word Jameos refers to the large opening in the lava tubes, that were formed the roof collapsed during the last volcanic eruptions.

Jameos del Agua is part of a 6 – 7 km long lava tube, along with another attraction on the island called Cuevas de los Verdes.

Cesar Manrique designed the place around the two large caves found on site, one of which hides a natural lake, with crystal clear water.

The other cave is a concert hall, and if you wish to attend an event here, there are special tickets available for night visits, which include dinner and the concert afterwards.

The albino crabs at Jameos del Agua

Right from the first steps you can see the lake hidden inside the grotto, and on the bottom of the lake live thousands of albino crabs, a species native only to Lanzarote.

This type of crabs are actually very small and also blind and they are the symbol of Lanzarote, since this is the only place on Earth where they can be found.

When visiting Jameos del Agua, please respect this one of a kind place and do not throw coins in the lake. The rust from the coins harms the crabs and although there are several signs asking people to stop throwing coins, it seems that they keep getting ignored quite often. Cleaning the lake is difficult, it requires specialized divers and costs a lot of money, so keep this in mind if you visit Jameos del Agua.

The white “dots” on the bottom of the lake are actually the albino crabs

Jameos del Agua Concerts

One of the caves is designed to function as a large concert hall and you can enjoy a magical night out in this beautiful location.

The tickets for events usually include a dinner and also the concert, so this could be a good choice if you’re looking for something special to do for a celebration.

The concert hall at Jameos del Agua was reopened for the public in 2009, after the reconstruction work was completed. Volcanic caves are very fragile and the workers had to use innovative techniques in order to complete the job and maintain the initial aspect intact.

This place has great acoustics and it is a one of a kind event hall, which makes the experience all the more interesting and special.

The auditorium has a maximum capacity of 600 people.

The volcano house – La casa de los volcanes

This is the newest addition to Jameos del Agua, a space designed to inform tourists about the volcanic origin and volcanic activity in all the Canary Islands.

In my opinion there’s much room for improvement here, in order to make things more interactive and interesting, but it’s a place to start.

You can find out more about the latest volcanic eruptions and there’s also a nice 3D model of the islands and the placement of the volcanoes.

  • The individual ticket is 9 euros for adults; children, 7-12 years, 4,50 Euro; Resident in the Canary Islands: Adults, 7,20 Euro; Childs, 3,60 Euro
  • You can also buy the multi-tickets available at each center, if you plan on visiting more than one center in Lanzarote.

How to get to Jameos del Agua

The cultural attraction Jameos del Agua is situated in the north of Lanzarote and there are plenty of road signs indicating the direction.

Address: Carretera Arrecife-Orzola, S/N, 35520 Haria, Las Palmas, Spain

After visiting Jameos del Agua, we recommend that you also go to Cueva de los Verdes and then to Mirador del Rio for the simply amazing view.

When to visit – Schedule

Opening hours: 10:00 to 18:30 h

If you’re planning an individual visit, without a group tour, then it’s best to come in the afternoon.

Especially in the summer months in gets really busy in the morning, so it’s best to visit after 2 PM/ 14:00.

There’s also a restaurant and a cafe on site, so you’ll be able to enjoy a cup of coffee or lunch in this amazing place.

Day tours to Jameos del Agua

There are lots of trips available on the island and many of them are centered around the works of Cesar Manrique, which is understandable given the fact that he was born in Lanzarote.

After going through a small entrance, we walk down an ingenious spiral staircase made up of volcanic stone and wood that allows us to slowly discover from the height, the first interior stage: “Jameo Chico”. Here, the abundant vegetation and ornamental elements that nourish the structure of the Jameo stand out.

Inside the cave, we discover a natural lake of clear and transparent waters that has more than a dozen endemic species of great scientific interest, the famous blind crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) standing out at the rocky bottom of the lake. The darkness of the grotto makes this rare specimen unique in the world, without pigmentation, they are white in color and do not even measure one centimeter.  Colloquially known as “Jameitos”, they are the Jameos del Agua symbol. Mixed with the environment, we find a walkway that allows us to cross the lake on one side and, after climbing a landscaped wall, we access the “Jameo Grande” which, among other charms, has a spectacular Auditorium that takes advantage of the interior of a volcanic cave . The auditorium becomes an architectural epilogue to this journey.

Jameos del Agua, an inland Lanzarote excursion

The Jameos del Agua was the first Centre of Art, Culture and Tourism created by César Manrique on Lanzarote. The artist’s creative genius and his passion for his native island led him to design a series of remarkable architectural creations from the elements so generously granted to him by Nature.

For this attraction, Manrique focused on the volcanic tunnel formed after the eruption of the Corona Volcano and chose the sections of the tunnel nearer the coast for the creation of the Jameos del Agua. This tunnel, over 6 kilometres in length, extends from the crater of the volcano itself to the sea, and continues for a further kilometre and a half under the sea (this last section is known as the Túnel de la Atlántida). These types of tunnel are not usually as long as this: in fact, this is one of the longest in the world.

The first thing we notice when we hear about the Jameos del Agua is its strange name. The word ‘jameo’ (a word from the original inhabitants) actually means the hollow produced by the collapse of the ceiling of a tunnel formed by volcanic lava, while ‘del agua’ refers to an interior lake, created by water filtering through because the hollow is below sea level. In this installation, which bears the hallmark of Manrique, can be found at least three ‘jameos’: the Jameo Chico (Small Jameo), just after the entrance, the Grande (Large) and the Redondo (Round).

Exploring a geological wonder

Cactus Jameos del Agua

Although initially (in 1966) designed as a performance auditorium, the Jameos del Agua now constitute one of the most fascinating attractions Lanzarote has to offer. To best appreciate this installation, it is worth bearing in mind that it is basically a geological phenomenon, but that through the creative genius of César Manrique it can now be enjoyed as another of Lanzarote’s attractions.

A leisurely tour of the Jameos del Agua takes no more than an hour, or perhaps a little more to allow for the host of photogenic nooks and crannies where it is difficult to resist the temptation of a selfie. Families with children to be aware that strollers and buggies are not allowed inside. For very small children, the use of a baby sling is recommended, to allow parents greater freedom of movement.

During your tour of the Jameos del Agua, you will discover awe-inspiring spaces and features such as a natural lake with clear waters, and a barrel vault, resembling a cathedral nave with a hole in the top which allows in what appears to be a remarkable beam of heavenly light. Crossing the bridge from one side of the lake to the other brings you to the Jameo Grande, where a breathtaking garden is filled with imperious-looking plants. The palms, cactus and fig trees appear to watch over the undulating white swimming pool that dominates the space. The green of the plants, the pure white of the pool, the blueness of the water and the blackness of the volcanic rock make for one of the loveliest scenes at the Jameos del Agua. This is one place that leads us to believe that human intervention really can at times make Nature even more beautiful.

If you continue beyond the Jameo Grande, you will come to an impressive auditorium integrated into a volcanic cave. This is a unique place, thanks to its geological characteristics and its acoustic features. Once again, Manrique succeeded in making use of a gift from Nature to offer a gift of his own to the human race.

Jameos del Agua cave

The blind crabs of the Jameos del Agua

Apart from the importance of Lanzarote’s Jameos del Agua as a tourist attraction, the centre is also regarded having a particular ecological significance. This is because the place is home to an endemic species of crabs. Their scientific name is Munidopsis polymorpha, and they are very small (barely a centimetre across), albino and blind. These tiny arthropods are very sensitive to changes in their environment, and they are affected by sound, light and rust, which is why throwing coins into the water is prohibited. The temptation to make a wish can be very strong, but in this particular instance, it is best resisted.

Other things to see in Lanzarote

The Jameos del Agua belong to the Island Council’s series of Centres of Art, Culture and Tourism on Lanzarote. Other exceptionally beautiful centres are the Montañas del Fuego, the Cueva de los Verdes, the Jardín del Cactus, the Monumento al Campesino [Monument to the Farm Worker]—a typical Lanzarote dwelling—and the Mirador del Río. Because of its amazing location, another highly recommended visit is to the Museo Atlántico, an undertaking by the artist Jason deCaires Taylor. The Museum is situated at a depth of 12 metres, in the Bahía de las Coloradas, and covers an area of 2,500 m2.

More tips on my article about where to stay in Lanzarote

Crab Symbol of the Lava caves

César Manrique has designed symbols for each of the sites he has envisioned.
For Jameos del Agua, it is a version of the crab that looks more like a lobster…
You can find the sculpture right by the entrance.

Jameo Chico – Access to Jameos del Agua restaurant

Once inside, the reach the floor of the lava tube, you walk down a staircase inside the first cave: Jameo Chico.
You arrive at the level of the Jameos del Agua Restaurant.

You can have a drink or a meal and enjoy the unique atmosphere of the lava tunnel.
I personally enjoyed a lunch break there. The caesar salad and the cake were tasty. Of course, because of the location it is a bit more expensive but the experience was enjoyable.

Underground lake and Jameos del Agua crabs

After the restaurant, you have to walk down a few more steps and to reach a section of the lava tube that has not collapsed.
Inside is the salt lake with clear water.

You can seat by the shore of the lake and spot the very tiny white crabs, sometimes refer to as Jameitos.
The Munidopsis Polimorpha is around 1cm long and blind.
The Lake is regulated by the Atlantic ocean and its water is really clear.

Note that they are very sensitive to oxide, so don’t throw anything (especially coins) in the lake.

To reach the next section of the visit, you walk along the lake and climb a few steps up.

Most famous Swimming pool in Lanzarote – Jameo Grande

You arrive at the next big opening in the lava tube. This cave is really large, so it is called Jameo Grande.
It is home to the most famous swimming pool in Lanzarote. It is so inviting!!! Yet nobody can swim in it. I’ve heard that only the King of Spain can, but I can’t confirm it.

The pool is surrounded with palm trees and other tropical plants. It is really a unique sight contrasting with the dark lava rock.

I recommend to spend some time here. Sit down and enjoy the contrasts imagined by César Manrique. Even with many tourists around, it is quite peaceful.

Auditorium and Jameos del Agua Concerts

At the end of the cave is an auditorium. It is the only one in the world is such a lava cave.
It can host 550 people.
For information about concerts and events, scroll down on this page.

Upper level

Once you are ready to leave this eldorado, you can enjoy the white staircase to the upper level, back on normal ground.

From there you can walk around and find many great angles to admire the pool the trees, the lava and the architectural pieces.

Museum – Casa de los Volcanes

You end the tour with a visit of the museum Casa de los Volcanes which means House of the Volcanoes.
It provides information about the volcanoes in Lanzarote, the Canary islands and the world.
To be honest, I did not find it fascinating, I preferred the Timanfaya Visitor center.
The most interesting pieces are all the equipment measuring the earth temperature and movements.

And then you reach the exit via this beautiful corridor.

Nearby Lanzarote cave – Cueva de los verdes

And just across the main road you can visit Cueva de los Verdes. It is another section of the lava tube that is more enclosed and natural.

How to Visit Jameos del Agua, Lanzarote

Last Updated on 19th February 2022 by Sophie Nadeau

If you ask anyone what to do on Lanzarote, then no doubt Jameos del Agua will be near the top of their lists. After all, the unique opening in the lava tube is home to a blind lobster species that is only found in the cave and has since become a symbol of Lanzarote. Here’s how to visit Jameos del Agua, as well as things to know before visiting.

Contents

  • What is the Jameos del Agua?
  • Munidopsis polymorpha (Blind Squat Lobster)
  • César Manrique and creating a tourist attraction
  • Facilities and things to do at Jameos del Agua
  • Tickets for Jameos del Agua
  • Jameos del Agua or Cueva de los Verdes: Which should you visit?

What is the Jameos del Agua?

Between 3000- 5000 years ago, the lava tube was formed when hot molten magma flowed down from the volcano of Monte Corona all the way to the sea. The lava stream cooled and formed a crust before draining away into the sea and leaving behind a tunnel.

The lava tube which houses Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua (they are different openings of the same tube, of which Jameos del Agua is the part closest to the sea) stretches for 6 km above sea level before reaching the sea and extending a further 1. 5 km below sea level.

There are around two dozen sections where the roof of the tunnel has collapsed, thus forming caverns which are known as jameo. The Jameos del Agua is formed of three jameos; Jameo Chico (the entrance), Jameo Grande, and Jameo la Cazuela.

One particularly unique ‘jameo’ is where a natural seawater lake has formed, which has given rise to unique conditions for an endemic crab species.

Munidopsis polymorpha (Blind Squat Lobster)

The most magical part of the cave with the natural seawater pool is indeed being able to see the blind lobster species for the first time. These little white lobsters are completely blind and are around 1 cm in length.

They are endemic to Lanzarote, meaning that this is the only place in the world where they can be found. So iconic are the little squat lobsters that they are now the animal symbol for the island and their image can be found on flags, advertisements, and signs.

Munidopsis polymorpha have adapted so perfectly to the lighting and water conditions of the sea cave that even the slightest change in the environment can damage or kill them. For this reason, it’s absolutely forbidden to throw coins into the water and the area is considered to be ecologically fragile!

César Manrique and creating a tourist attraction

The entrance to the Jameos del Agua, as well as a number of other architectural features were designed by late acclaimed Lanzarote artist, César Manrique (it was his first of such projects).

The entire complex comprises of a restaurant, the seawater cave lake, gardens, a museum, and a pool (though visitors are not allowed to bathe). Parts of Jameos del Agua was opened to the public for the first time in 1966, prior to the full opening in 1977.

Facilities and things to do at Jameos del Agua

Upon entering the complex, visitors head down a fairly steep flight of steps before entering into a semi open-air café that overlooks the cave. We didn’t have time to stop for a coffee in the café but it’s fairly well-reviewed and is a relaxing way to enjoy the unique ambiance of the complex.

Visitors can then follow down more steps to reach the fringes of the lake that the squat crabs call home. Lighting is very unusual in the cave, so it’s hard to take photos, but the complex truly is quite magical.

You’ll then walk around the fringes of the lake before emerging into another café area that’s also home to a manmade swimming pool. The visit to Jameos del Agua took us around 40 minutes in total.

Tickets for Jameos del Agua

Much like many other tourist attractions in Lanzarote, even if you’ve purchased your ticket to visit Jameos del Agua through a different vendor, you’ll still have to wait in line with everyone else to enter the complex.

We personally opted for one of the ‘bonos’ (vouchers) option which gives you a slightly reduced entrance rate if you opt to buy a ticket that includes several island attractions (you can apparently save up to €5, depending on which option you choose).

You have to know which attractions you want to visit at the time of purchasing the tickets as these monuments are printed on the ticket you receive. We personally bought a combination ticket for the Cuevea de los Verdes, the Jameos del Agua, and the Jardín de Cactus.

Jameos del Agua or Cueva de los Verdes: Which should you visit?

Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes are located within a few hundred metres of one another and, as of 2022, both cost €10 each to visit. I would highly recommend heading to both, so I personally preferred the Cueva de los Verdes, which I found to be better value for money.

With this being said, whereas with the Cueva de los Verdes there is a strict number of people who can enter at one time due to the unique nature of this part of the lava tube, meaning that you can be waiting upwards of an hour to visit.

In stark contrast, due to the steady stream of flow of people in Jameos del Agua, we only had to wait a few minutes to visit. However, as I said previously, I did truly find the Cueva de los Verdes to be much better value for money as there was more to see.

All in all, I would preference seeing Cueva de los Verdes, though ideally see both attractions during your Lanzarote stay! The Jameos del Agua is located close to the town of Arrieta and is also not far from the town of Haría.

Jameos del Agua – Lanzarote Information

Julie

General

The Jameos del Agua was the first site to be created by César Manrique as a cultural centre in Lanzarote which opened back in 1966 and is part of the volcanic tunnel formed with the eruption of the Volcán de la Corona. The Túnel de la Atlántida stretches from la Corona to the sea a distance of 6 km in length and one of the longest tunnels of its kind in the world. Its name “Jameo” refers to the sections where the roof of the tunnel has collapsed leaving an opening in the ground, there are three such openings at the Jameos del Agua they are Jameo Chico, Jameo Grande and Jameo Redondo.

The Jameos del Agua is part of the Monumento Natural del Malpaís de la Corona which protects the site which is also listed as one of scientific interest, only recently a new species was discovered living in the tunnel that was named after César Manrique.

From the entrance you descend into the Jameo Chico by a spiral staircase that allow you glimpses down into the café bar area with vibrant orange sails, bright green plants a contrast against the dark volcanic rock.

The café bar is built into the walls with some tables out in the open and others set further inside the cave, there is a dance floor and a balcony at the back where you see the lava tunnel disappear towards the sea.

Heading deeper into the ground we arrive at the natural lake, the water is clear and tidal the tiny blind albino crabs (Munidopsis polymorpha) are visible dotted against the black lava rock bottom. These crabs are are at most 1cm in size and very rare, unique to Lanzarote.

Passing carefully along the volcanic path at the side of the lake we emerge into the daylight again and some fabulous plants layered within the rocks and pathways.

The Jameo Grande has a kidney shaped swimming pool that is a vibrant blue against the white painted sides with a lone 100 year old Canarian palm tree stretching out over the water, this is a backdrop for many visitors photos. I loved the staircase with white concrete steps and planks of wood inset leading to the upper level.

The auditorium is situated at the far end of the swimming pool, here we sat and enjoyed the atmosphere, there are rows of white long bench style seats leading down to the stage area with dramatic under lighting and mirrors.

Manrique was incredible with his use of textures, he would take the natural elements such as wood and pebbles, set them into concrete and create a wonderful blend of art and nature.

The Casa de los Volcanes is situated at the Jameos del Agua and contains lots of facts and information about vulcanology, the exhibition is spread though a number of rooms.

The first room contains images above and below ground of the Túnel de la Atlántida.

There are some interesting interactive features, this volcano bubbles when you walk past, the various mirrors are good fun, there was video and a map that highlighted the active volcanoes around the world.

There is a display of all the different colours of sand on the beaches in Lanzarote and the final room has a film of a volcano erupting with different images of a lava flows.

From the balcony during the tour of the Casa de los Volcanes you can see the Jameo Grande with the Corona in the background. We stopped and enjoyed coffee on the upper terrace before wandering through the gift shop and making our exit. If you have time I recommend walking around the front of the Jameos del Agua and taking the path down to the coast, if you head to the right towards Punta Mujeres you can normally find windsurfers, kite surfers and surfers enjoying the waves.

The opening hours are from 10am to 6.30pm but also in the evenings on Tuesday, Friday & Saturday from 7pm to 2am. Entry is €10 per adult and €5 per child (aged 7-12) with a 20% discount after 1530 each day. Residents are entitled to discounted prices with proof of residencia and ID.

Insólita Tour

In addition to the standard visit described above, you can now do a premium tour of Jameos del Agua.

The visit is in a small group and guided, and lasts about 1.5 hours, finishing with an aperitif and tapas, and will take you to parts of the Jameo the public never see, including exclusive access to the stage and dressing rooms of the Auditorium and the Jameo de “La Cazuela”.

Tapa y vino

We did the Insólita tour in December 2020 and would highly recommend it. We were given a detailed commentary of the history  of Jameos del Agua and we were shown details we’d never noticed before. The tour can be done in English or Spanish, or both. We visited several parts most people never get to see – backstage, the dressing rooms and the area where artists can wander privately before or after performances.

The price is €35 for adults and €17.50 for children. There are discounts for Canarian and Lanzarote residents.

In the northern part of Lanzarote, one of the first projects by César Manrique, the Jameos del Agua Cave, can be seen. This is the place where nature meets art.

White lagoon in the Jameos del Agua cave complex

In the northern part of the island of Lanzarote is the Jameos del Agua cave complex, a place where nature meets art.

You can find a guide to Lanzarote here.

In this volcanic cave complex, every detail of the landscape and the interior of natural halls and tunnels is thought out and not accidental. The feeling of harmony and consonance between nature and art does not leave visitors for a second.

Origin

Stone slab at the entrance to the cave complex

If we translate the phrase “Jameos del Agua” from the language of the natives of the island of Lanzarote, the Canary archipelago, we get “Emptiness with water.” Many years ago, when the Corona volcano did not doze, as it does today, but violently erupted, the flowing lava was cooled by sea water, solidifying in a bizarre form. Over time, voids formed in this huge pipe. As a result of this centuries-old natural activity, one of the most unusual natural and cultural centers on the planet has been created on the island of Lanzarote.

At the time of the great geographical discoveries, the seizure of new territories and the slave trade, the tunnel served as a refuge for local residents hiding from conquistadors greedy for foreign wealth or pirates who visited the island under a variety of flags. Then the natural miracle was empty, occasionally pleasing the eyes of rare researchers. Finally, in the late 60s of the XX century, the “emptiness” became a popular tourist attraction.

In fact, Jameos del Agua is a continuation of the large volcanic tunnel Cueva de los Verdes. You can read more about it here. But the ideas of Cesar Manrique and Jesús Soto, who led the “water voids” project, made this part of the tunnel a separate attraction and a unique place where nature and contemporary art do not conflict, but organically complement and reveal the beauty of each other.

Science Center Museum – “House of the Volcanoes”

Jameos del Agua Art and Cultural Center is divided into two main areas: Hameo Chico (Small Void) and Hameo Grande (Great Void). Each part offers visitors something special. In addition, visitors will not miss the beautiful snow-white lagoon, and those who want to learn more about the origin of lava caves and volcanoes in general can visit the Museum of the Science Center – “House of Volcanoes” (Casa de los Volcanes). In the very center from 19For 87 years, important scientific and educational work in volcanology has been carried out.

Jameo Chico

Jameo Chico begins with stone steps leading to a beautiful volcanic grotto. Black rock, created by nature, is enlivened by carefully selected living plants and original ornaments created by contemporary artists.

Behind the grotto is a salt lake. The purest water, albino crabs, artistic lighting create a unique and exotic atmosphere of this part of the cave tunnel. The depth of the lake changes, depending on the ocean tides, but this does not affect the transparency of the water, and all the inhabitants of this reservoir are perfectly visible at any time. Sometimes the water level is so high that visitors have to wet their feet.

Jameo Grande

Cave Concert Hall

Visitors to Jameo Grande reach Jameo Grande via a footbridge that passes the lake. The main thing in the “big void” is a concert hall with unique acoustics. Concerts are often held here, visiting which will leave vivid and unforgettable memories.

Artificial lagoon

The cave complex of Lanzarote is decorated with an artificial lagoon that contrasts with the black volcanic landscape of the white bowl and the bright blue color of the water. Despite the attractiveness and aesthetic impeccability of this object, created according to the sketch of César Manrique, swimming is not allowed here. But this is probably the only thing that somewhat upsets many visitors.

Restaurant Hameo Chico

An unforgettable dinner will be at the cave restaurant Hameo Chico, which works as a bar during the day, where amazingly aromatic coffee is prepared, and in the evening it turns into a full-fledged restaurant with local cuisine.

Cave of Jameos del Agua0001

Canary Islands, Spain

Description

Jameos del Agua is the lower part of a large complex of volcanic caves Cueva de Los Verdes formed about 3 thousand years ago. This is the most interesting place in Lanzarote, a natural wonder, which, with the help of a brilliant architect, has turned into one of the most striking sights in the Canaries.

The caves of Jameos del Agua owe their name to the natural lagoon inside.

Contents:

architecture He turned the caves into a work of art. The project was started in 1965 and completed in 1987. In the caves there is a unique concert hall for 600 people with fantastic acoustics, an underground restaurant with a bar and a dance floor, and a giant cave of Hameo Grande.

The cave complex consists of two grottoes connected by an open gallery with an artificial lake.

The Jameo Grande Cave is 62 meters long, 21 meters high and about 20 meters wide. Stone steps lead to it. Also in the cave is an internal lagoon with sea water, where unique blind albino crabs live.

There is a real tropical garden around the man-made lake.

Entertainment and restaurant

The underground concert hall is famous for its acoustics and regularly hosts concerts and music festivals.

Relax and unwind in the underground bar or restaurant Hameo Chico, serving international cuisine. We recommend trying grilled octopus with Mojo sauce, grilled smoked cheese with tomato jam, sea delicacies, washed down with Malvasia.

The average cost of a dinner per person is 30-40 euros.

On Saturdays after 19-00 in the cave complex there are parties with famous DJs and musicians.

Also next to the cave complex is a division of the scientific institute that studies the local fauna, flora, geology. The exposition, created by the Institute’s staff, introduces visitors to interesting facts, finds and other useful information about the caves.

Jameos del Agua

In principle, let’s assume that the word “ Jameo ” is of local origin and refers to a hole that has formed in the ground as a result of volcanic activity: an underground volcanic pipe descends and thus causes the subsequent subsidence of the soil.

Los Jameos del Agua, so They are a product of the Corona volcano. , a 600-meter-high volcanic cone that is already 21,000 years old. In fact, its volcanic chimney flowed into the sea, and part of it sank at some point, forming caves or chameos. There are two very popular ones, Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes . The other part was hollow but submerged and this underwater beauty is known as the Atlantic Tunnel.

In the case of Jameos del Agua, they are closer to the coast and there are three of them: Jameo Grande, Jameo de la Cazuela and Jameo Chico. where we can enter the interior. But the truth is that these “caves” did not remain the way nature created them, and scientists turned to them because they hide a great interest for science. And not only scientists, but also an artist: Cesar Manrique.

Cesar Manrique had already died, in the 90s, but it was a local painter and famous sculptor. All his work was focused on protecting the natural beauties of the islands. Based on idea 1968 years old, he gave rise to the intervention of the artist jameos. Work began at the end of that decade, but as the work progressed and the terrain began to show its characteristics, the project changed.

Around 1977 the general structure was completed, and Art, Culture and Tourism Center . Ten years later, the auditorium was opened to 600 people and by the same date, and since then, some works have continued to serve as a home for the scientific community dedicated to Vulconology.

Visit Jameos del Agua

To Jameos del Agua you enter through Jameo Chico , through a small door. We then descend a spiral staircase carved from volcanic stone and reinforced with wood as we contemplate the characteristics of this small cave. This is not a naked cave, is a cave with vegetation and some decorative elements that fascinate the view. There is also a bar and a restaurant overlooking the lake.

Well, here too there is a natural lake with crystal clear water endemic fish and blind crabs for example in the background. Because the cave is dark, there is no pigmentation, so this white crab is unique in the world and very small, only one centimeter long. They are affectionately known as “Hameitos”.

There are not one plank, but two, using cracks in the rocks, as well as dance floors Well, a nightclub can work. The route continues on a footbridge disguised as the environment, which allows us to cross the lake and climb the green wall. This path leads us to Jameo Grande, where the Auditorium with 600 seats is located. . The artist took advantage of the shape of the cave to create it with an oblique cut and good acoustics, and it is the perfect end point for the walk.

This hall was closed for many years, until 2009, but since then it has been open and they are represented here. classical music concerts and film screenings . When the stage ends, at the foot of the next and final bubble that we can access is Jameo de la Casuela. At its end, like a spring, salty water beats.

Can you imagine enjoying these shows in this fabulous setting? Wonderful! Then, once you get out of these three caves, you can visit the House of Volcanoes. The modern building houses information related to the island of Lanzarote. There is a lot of volcanology, for example, elements of measurement, and this is where specialists in this field from all over the world usually meet from time to time.

We thank Elena for a very interesting tour of the island, the tour time flew by. We saw a lot of things, especially liked the Timamfaya Park and the magnificent creations that Cesar Manrique, the artist who gave the world the island of Lanzarote, created in the natural volcanic landscape. We fell in love with it and the island too :). Unfortunately, it was not possible to see all the creations of Cesar Manrique during one excursion, but in the following days, on Elena’s tip, we visited all the objects that she recommended to us. We thank her for the recipes of the most interesting dishes and practical tips for tourist life! With nostalgia we remember the wonderful island of Lanzarote.

She made a very cool itinerary, taking into account the weather and the composition of the group, and took into account our wishes to visit the Caesar Manrique’s house-museum, a tasting room, etc.
Elena introduced us to the history, archeology and geography of Lancerote:.
the island is extraordinary and this was our last stop on the cruise ship itinerary and by far the best!!!
Elena is very punctual and very easy to contact via email and whatsapp.
The only pity is that we had much less time than we would like.
Thank you from all our company and we would like to see you again!

BEWARE: the phone shop is a scam.

    Overall very nice shopping mall…

The exception is the phone accessory store in the basement. The guy scams you with very high prices for low quality goods, shady discounts, and when paying he still puts higher prices than he told you. This store really makes the mall feel unsafe is an absolute scam. This store is very bad for the reputation of the shopping mall and the other stores, which are really very nice. We hope the mall management quickly takes action against this scam.

From the other stores, we can recommend the kind people, quality goods, and good prices. We visited the Intersport for various swimming goods, the supermarket is really great in its offering of foods, drinks, and various beach products. The manicure / pedicure place is clean and the staff is skilled.

    Review of: Aloha Canary Islands

    Very happy customer

What a fabulous shop. Ibought 2 dresses and a hat from this shop in Fanabe, Tenerife, unfortunately I had to return the hat as my husband did not like it. I was not looking forward to returning this for a refund as I do not speak Spanish. I can’t tell you what a pleasant experience it was with the man who refunded me with NO problem at all. I hope this review helps people wishing to buy from Aloha in the future. thank you so much. I will be back 👍
