Mogan is a beautiful resort on the southwest coast of the volcanic island of Gran Canaria, and one of the islands that make up the Spainish Canary Islands. Located in southern Europe in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of Africa, this destination experiences gorgeous weather, with long hot summers, mild winters and dry conditions year round. Surrounded on one side by imposing hills and the other by crystal clear, blue sea, the scenery is breath taking no matter what time of year you decide to visit.
The Canary Islands boast one of the best climates in the world, due to the cool trade winds that help keep temperatures warm but comfortable in the summer, while the warming Azores anticyclone prevents temperatures becoming too cold in the winter months. There can also be unusual weather conditions such as the Calima, which is caused hot dusty trade wind blowing from the Sahara in summer or winter, while the Sirocco brings hot temperatures across from Africa.
Summers are a favourite time for visitors to the area, as the days are long and hot, the nights are mild and are perfect for sitting outside enjoying a few drinks with friends. Summer months last from May to September, when average temperatures range from 21°C to 25°C. August is the hottest month of the year as well as being one of the driest. Little rainfall is seen during the summer months, and with sea temperatures of around 23° at their warmest in September, this is the perfect time of year to experience the beaches of the resort. Even during the winter months, from December to February, the temperatures are an average of 19°C, sometimes reaching a high of 21°C in January, the coldest month of the year making this a year-round destination to escape the colder climate of northern Europe. Summer
Summers from May to September are long and warm, perfect for beach activities, exploring the town or just relaxing by the pool.
The warmest month of the year is August when temperatures can reach as high as 28°C, while the months of July and September are also a beautiful time to visit with temperatures climbing up to 27°C. Occasional heat waves can push temperatures to over 30°C when hot, dusty air is pushed over from the Sahara in Africa. Average daytime temperatures stay between 23°C and 25°C during these months. Overnight temperatures are gradually increasing during this season ranging from 18°C in May to 22°C throughout August and September.
June, July and August are the driest months in Mogan, seeing virtually no rain. Rainfall gradually increases later in the season with thunderstorms becoming more frequent in September. There are lovely long days in the summer with up to 12 hours of sunshine each day at the peak of the season. This combined with high sea temperatures of between 21°C and 23°C means it is the best time of year to have a swim in the clear blue sea. Summer months are the busiest in this resort, with visitors flocking to Mogan from across Europe.
This can make for a fun and exciting time to have a holiday here, but the beaches and bars can get very busy.
Autumn
Autumn is still warm in Mogan, with average temperatures only dropping from 24°C in October to 22°C in November. Average high and low temperatures range from 21°C overnight to 26°C during the day in October and 19°C to 24°C in November meaning this season is a good time to travel for those wishing to avoid the larger summer crowds and still get to enjoy the warm beaches and outdoor activities on offer at this resort. The weather is generally consistent and there are often lovely warm sunny days that do not have the high levels of heat of the summer days. It is the best time of year to walk around the town, visiting cafes, museums and galleries without getting too hot in the sun.
The days are beginning to decrease in length to around 9 or 10 hours of sunshine per day, but the sea temperatures of around 22°C are still ideal for an autumn swim or to get involved in some snorkelling or diving.
Rainfall is increasing at this time of year and the occasional thunderstorm might be seen during autumn. The days are still more likely to be dry with only around 10mm of rain expected on average in October and 21mm in November.
Winter
Winter, from December to February, is cooler but not too cold in comparison to northern European winters. It is worth bringing a jacket or jumper if visiting at this time of year, the weather can be unpredictable and rain showers can occur, which bring the temperatures down further. Average daytime temperatures are 20°C in December and 19°C in January and February. Overnight the temperature can drop as low as 16°C at this time of year, so wrap up well when going out in the evening. Temperatures can climb up to 22°C in December and 21°C in January and February so be prepared for all weather conditions.
February experiences the highest level of rainfall in Mogan, with around 22mm of rain falling in an average month. However, it is unlikely that there will be more than one or two rainy days in a row as this is usually caused by cold fronts that quickly cross the island and move offshore without lingering.
Days are a little shorter in winter and see around 8 to 9 hours of sunshine a day. The water temperatures are cooler at 20°C in December and 19°C in January and February, so it may be a little too chilly to swim.
Spring
March and April are spring months in this resort and are characterised by the start of the warmer weather, with average daytime temperatures of 19°C in March and 20°C in April. Overnight the temperatures are still a chilly 16°C and 17°C but can climb up to a lovely 23°C in April. Days are starting to get longer now and visitors can expect around 10 to 11 hours of sunshine each day. Although these are not the hot conditions of the summer, this time of year is great for those wanting to avoid the larger crowds and higher prices of the summer months. When visiting this area in spring, make sure to pack some warmer clothes for the evenings and cooler days.
There is less rainfall during spring as the climate of Mogan becomes drier towards the summer.
Around 10mm of precipitation is expected on average in March, dropping to 6mm in April. This makes spring perfect for visiting the old town and exploring areas of the island other than the beaches. The sea temperatures are at their lowest in March and April, only reaching 19°C, so swimming is only for the bravest or most dedicated swimmer.
This picturesque resort is made up of the old town, the beach and the harbour. Water channels leading from the marina to the fishing harbour pass through the town and flow under arches built through the buildings, giving the traffic-free town the nickname of ‘Venecia de Canarias’ (Venice of the Canaries), and providing a relaxing ambience to the area. The beaches are stunning with plenty of activities for the whole family, and there are many bars and restaurants along the harbour, beach and in the town itself.
This is the ideal destination for visitors who are looking for a beach holiday, as the sea is clear and calm, the beaches are safe for children to play, and there are plenty of sunbeds, shades and food options for beach-goers.
Situated on the leeward side of the island, the main beach is protected from strong waves by being sheltered in a bowl-shaped cove. There are up-market options for those seeking a quality holiday destination with low-rise apartments, a charming village atmosphere and whitewashed houses in attractive narrow, cobbled streets.
