The open plan living room opens to a terrace with dining area and there are steps down to a lawn, gardens with citrus trees, covered lounge with BBQ and swimming pool area. There are 3 bathrooms with a mixture of bathtubs and showers.
STYLE NOTES
Contemporary European with a Mallorcan touch. The property has been featured in the Spanish interiors magazine ‘Nuevo Estilo’. With brickwork walls, white and natural colors and stunning black and white photography on the walls, it is art-lover’s dream. Tom Ford books lie on the coffee table; the main bathroom has a gigantic Lee Jefferys painting and Herman Brood, Bettina Nuschei and Sabala paintings hang elsewhere. We love the airy spaces and the clean lines of the garden.
PERKS FOR THE PARENTS
This stunning villa with a pool in the quiet village of Selva in northern Mallorca is beautifully designed with exquisite paintings and sculptures. On a cobbled side street just off the main village square, it offers a taste of local Mallorcan life with weekly markets and summer festivals. It is laid out with bedrooms on the street level and a living and kitchen are on the first floor to maximize the sunshine; there is easy access to the wonderful outdoor area with dining terrace, covered lounge corner with BBQ, lovely garden with citrus trees and the 4x7m heated pool.
WHY KIDS LOVE IT
There is plenty at the house for children, including toys, kids DVDs, a heated pool and space to play in the garden. There are 2 resident tortoises. There is a lovely white wooden crib for babies and a high chair. It is a great location for children, 100m from the main square where all children from the village gather in the afternoon to play together – it is easy to make friends. There is a tennis court, semi Olympic-sized pool and squash court within walking distance of the villa. The closest beaches are around 30 minutes’ drive away.
THINGS TO KNOW
Minimum stay: 7 days. Cleaning and towel change is included twice a week with bed linen changed weekly. Note that small children need to be accompanied outside around the steps and that there are open stairs in the house that are gated. The pool is heated year round and can be closed off from the house for safety. There is also a baby-secure removable fence that can be installed or removed very easily. Small children might need supervision in the house around breakable items. There is an additional charge for electricity (€0,26 per kWh) during the stay – typically €300 is charged on arrival with the difference refunded on check out.
ABOUT THE LOCATION
The villa is in the village of Selva in northern Mallorca, a quiet Mallorcan village, off the beaten track and full of local delights. I´ve lived in the Canary Islands since 2014 and my first home was Tenerife. I´ve lived in both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, and I´ve definitely learned a thing or two about apartment hunting in the islands.
It’s New Year’s in Las Palmas… in August?! For the last 7 years, Las Palmas has been celebrating the New Year in a unique way… or at least at a unique time. In August!
Residents of the Canary Islands (as well as the Balearic Islands and Ceuta) are eligible for a 75% discount on domestic boat and air travel between the Canary Islands and to mainland Spain.
Whether you’re desperately trying to beat the heat in Barcelona, soaking up the sun along the southern Spanish coast, or sitting at home wishing you were living the dream in Spain, chances are you’ll be feeling a bit parched this summer.
While there’s no shortage of cerveza and sangria to be sampled, do as the Spanish do and beat the heat with one of these 7 classic summer thirst-quenchers instead!
La Orotava is easily one of the most charming towns in Tenerife and is worth a visit any time of year, but even more so during its colorful Corpus Christi celebrations held annually from about mid-May to mid-June.
Small as it may be, the sapphire blue water of the Charco Azul (“Blue Pond” – definitely sounds better in Spanish) is worth a visit for anyone who finds themselves near El Risco in the northwest coast of Gran Canaria. The pond is easy enough to reach, with some lovely landscapes on the way and a perfect, picturesque place to take a solitary dip and cool down beneath the small waterfall.

LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, Spain — In a sunlit courtyard, volunteers at a church soup kitchen are handing out lunch bags and cups of fruit juice.
Arcadina Dámaso, the coordinator, says demand has shot up.
“Until December, a maximum of 50 people would come here,” she says. “Now, we’re serving 75. Most of the new ones are Senegalese and Moroccan. “
The Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of Western Sahara, have seen a surge of African migration. Last year, 23,025 people arrived on boats — 8 1/2 times more than in 2019, according to United Nations refugee agency data.

Stricter controls across the Mediterranean have led more migrants to choose this longer, treacherous route to Europe. Nearly all who reach the islands want to end up in mainland Spain, to find jobs or join relatives, which is more than 1,000 miles away.
Citing COVID-19 restrictions, Spanish police are stopping migrants from leaving the Canaries for the mainland — even those with valid documents. Only the most vulnerable migrants and refugees have been officially transferred.
The bottleneck has angered some locals, while for migrants it’s causing misery.
Younes Rida, 30, is getting a meal at the soup kitchen. After his work as a painter and mechanic dried up, he spent three days in an open boat from Agadir, Morocco, across the Atlantic, to Gran Canaria.
Through an interpreter, Rida says that he used his share of his family’s land to pay his passage to the islands — 2,000 euros ($2,380). But the people smuggler tricked him, taking his money and leaving him stranded. He paid another 2,000 euros to come. He’s desperate to get to mainland Spain, find work and send money home.

Rida wants to earn money for his mom’s diabetes medicine. He says the family is poor and there’s no future for him in Morocco. He’s not alone. Moroccans make up one of the largest immigrant groups in Spain. And according to a recent survey by Arab Barometer, an independent research group, 70% of young citizens consider emigrating due to frustrations over a lack of economic opportunities.

Stuck In Canary Islands, Migrants Fear What Comes Next
As the Spanish government struggled to accommodate the surge of arrivals, hotels left empty because of the pandemic were used as temporary solution. Now it is opening six new migrant camps for 7,000 people on the islands.
Rida was living in one of them, but after demanding to go to the mainland he says he was kicked out. Now he’s homeless, sleeping by the dock with a handful of friends.

Some Canarians are not happy that the islands have become a holding ground for migrants.
Aday Arbelo, an out-of-work welder from Gran Canaria, is also eating at the soup kitchen.
“We’re all afraid!” he says. “Every day there’s police around here, every day there are fights and robberies.”
“It’s awful. One day this is going to explode because there’s no solution at all. The government promises and promises and nobody helps.”
Canarian Aday Arbelo is a welder, but he’s been out of work for years. Unemployment here is over 25%, one of the highest rates in Spain. Arbelo feels like the migrants are getting more help than him.

“They eat in the camp, breakfast lunch and dinner. And us? We’re hungry. Hungry and ashamed, because it can’t go on like this,” he says.
Pockets of xenophobia have bubbled here since the crisis began. There have been anti-migrant marches and reports of organized groups attacking Moroccans.

Stephan Carlsen, who works at the Spanish Commission for Refugees, says most locals are more concerned about their own economic problems.
“People are not working now because there are no tourists here,” he says. “And now when they see all these people arriving, they maybe get frustrated.”
“The main problem is not the migrants arriving but the local authorities and the government,” Carlsen adds, “the image they are giving in front of the Canarian people — they feel like they are abandoned.”
But many Canarians support the migrants and are trying to help.
At a hostel, locals are chatting with a group of Senegalese men. The locals are part of a new solidarity group, Somos Red, which is offering food, clothes and legal advice to migrants.

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska has said that the government wants to minimize transfers to the mainland in order to “prevent irregular entry routes into Europe. “
The center-left government’s junior coalition partner, the leftist United We Can party, demanded migrants urgently be allowed to travel, condemning what it considers the “repeated infringement of human rights” in the Canaries. They say the situation is beginning to resemble that of the Greek island of Lesbos, where refugees are stranded, locals are fed up and tensions have mounted in crowded camps.
A spokesperson from Spain’s Interior Ministry told NPR that all undocumented migrants without international protection under asylum law face deportation. After the pandemic halted repatriation flights for months, deportations to Morocco, Senegal and Mauritania are now underway.
Diop has applied for asylum. He says he faced arrest in Senegal for his involvement in a protest over fishing rights, during which he claims his boat was burned by police.
He hopes to join his older brother in Seville.
“If I stay here, it will be hard,” he says. “I’ve got no family here, nor any work. “
Meanwhile Rida is desperate not to be sent back to Morocco.
At the dock where he sleeps with his friends, the group show videos of their boat journey, faces laughing and hopeful as it skims across the sea.
If he gets deported, Rida says he’ll try again to come to Spain.

Information for apartment owners Canary Islands
Renting with Globexs, how does it work?
Globexs is a company specialized in expat-rentals: Flexible, temporary rentals for expats, companies, remote workers and digital nomads for periods between 1-11 months. This page is written for apartment owners on the Canary Islands and explains the advantages of renting with Globexs, and how it works.
What are expat-rentals?
More and more apartment owners in the larger European cities are moving away from traditional rentals and are opting for renting to expats and remote workers.
In Spain 3 types of rentals coexist: Traditional long term unfurnished rentals, mid-term (3-11 months) furnished rentals and short term holiday rentals. The holiday (airbnb) market is clearly saturated in a lot of cities, causes troubles with the neighbours and is very labor-intensive.
Traditional rentals scare many apartment owners because of potential payment problems and the risk of a bad tenant (with no way of kicking him out). So that is why expat-rentals are becoming increasingly popular.
Click here to read about the advantages of renting to expats.
Indeed, if properly managed by a professional company like Globexs, expat-rentals offer huge advantages to apartment owners.
The principles of expat rentals
-
The tenant stays between 1-11 months -
The tenant cannot use the address as a first residency -
The apartment is fully furnished (including bath and bedlinen) -
All the expenses are included in the price (wifi, water, electricity, etc.) -
The contracts have flexible cancellation terms
Why expat rentals are so interesting in Canary Islands
Since the start of the pandemia more and more employers are allowing their staff to work online from home, or from… wherever. The lead to the creation of a new profile of young professionals: Remote workers, also called digital nomads, or professional expats.
The Canary Islands are strongly positioning themselves as one of the preferred destinations for remote workers and expats. Especially on Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura the community of remote workers is growing. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is actually the most popular destination in the Canary Islands for remote workers, but also the expat communities in the beach villages of El Cotillo, Lajares and Corralejo in Northern Fuerteventura are growing fastly. Most remote workers on the Canary Islands come from the UK, Germany and Scandinavia.
Renting your apartment to remote workers is a good idea, because they usually value local businesses and professionals, and will treat your apartment respectfully. In general, remote workers are highly qualified young professionals, usually without family obligations, and with an entrepreneurial spirit and an open mind.
The services provides by Globexs
Commercial
Globexs is a company which main activity is the provision of suitable accommodation for expats, companies and remote workers. We publish the owner’s apartment on globexs.com and offer the apartment to our expat-customers. Globexs finds the right expat (tenant) for the right apartment.
Financial
The rental price that the owner wishes to receive is determined in consultation with Globexs, and may vary for each rental, depending on the duration of the rental. The owner bears the costs of the utilities, such as electricity, gas, water, television, property taxes, etc. In the case of energy costs, costs over 100€/month (may vary depending on the destination) will be deducted from the tenant’s security deposit.
During the rental period Globexs collects the rent on behalf of the owner. The monthly rent is transferred to the owner either on the 5th of on the 20th of the month.
The rental contracts are always accompanied by a deposit, paid by the tenant to Globexs. The amount of the deposit is negotiated between Globexs and owner, but is usually the value of 1 month’s rent. Globexs collects and manages the deposit until the end of the rental. (see Deposit management)
Contracts
Globexs takes care of all the paperwork. With the owner Globexs signs an intermediation contract, and with the expat (tenant) Globexs signs a rental contract on behalf of the owner. The actual rental contract is an agreement between the expat (tenant) and the owner. Ask your Globexs agent for a sample of both contracts.
Problem solving
Globexs is the contact person during the complete stay of the tenant. In case of problems both the owner and the expat (tenant) contact their Globexs agent who will try to solve the problem by appropriate intermediation.
How does Globexs Canary Islands make money?
The Globexs fees are paid by the tenant
For its services Globexs charges to the expat (tenant) a commission, an administration fee, and/or an agency fee. These fees are variable and depends on the duration of the booking. They are charged on top of the rental price that Globexs has agreed with the owner, and will be invoiced to and paid by the tenant.
Publication fee
The publication of the property on globexs.com is subject to a 1-time administration fee of €150 + VAT to be paid by the owner.
The obligations of the owner
Equipment of the property
-
The owner must ensure that the rented house is sufficiently furnished and equipped with sufficient household goods for the number of people for whom the house is intended. -
All appliances must be in good condition and work perfectly. -
There must be a refrigerator with sufficient space for the number of people for whom the house is intended. -
Indispensable: Fast wifi, a good-size TV, oven/microwave, toaster, kettle and washing machine. -
Optional but highly recommended: Dishwasher, dryer, coffee machine. -
Beds must be in good condition and clean (including mattresses and bedlinen). These items can be purchased in the Globexs webshop. -
Cleaning products, shampoo and toilet paper are provided. -
The property must be delivered impeccably, completely clean and in good condition as well as free of personal belongings.
Obligations during the rental
-
The owner is responsible for check-in and handing over keys -
The owner must ensure that utilities (electricity and/or gas, water), wifi and television distribution are connected and operational throughout the rental period. -
The owner is obliged to consider as priority all necessary repairs and improvements, and to replace all furniture or appliances damaged as a result of normal use. -
The owner is responsible for managing the cleaning after the rental period, as well as the washing of the bedlinen and bath linen. -
The owner is responsible for the check-out process and the control of the apartment after check-out (see Deposit management).
Deposit management
Globexs collects the deposit and keeps it until the departure of the expat (tenant). The owner checks the apartment and communicates damages to Globexs within 5 working days after checkout. If the owner considers that (part of) the deposit should be retained Globexs opens a deposit report.
Reasons for non-refund of the deposit
The owner can decide to retain the deposit (partly of completely) in the following cases:
-
If the tenant does not leave the apartment surface clean on check-out. The tenant is not obliged to wash the bedsheets and the towels, but he is obliged to leave the apartment surface clean before he leaves: The dishes need to be washed. It is not allowed to leave the dishwasher with dirty dishes. The trash needs to be removed from the apartment. The fridge needs to be emptied. In case the apartment is left behind dirty a cleaning fee can be charged. The cleaning fee amount will be decided by the owner in collaboration with Globexs (minimum 75€ and maximum 1 month’s rent), and communicated to the tenant by Globexs. -
If the tenant causes damages to the property. Accidents can happen, but the tenant is obliged to cover the damages that he causes. (unremovable stains on bedlinen and furniture, broken furniture of kitchen equipment, etc….). The value of the damage will be decided by the owner in collaboration with Globexs and communicated to the tenant by Globexs. The owner needs to justify the cost of the damage with invoices or receipts. -
If the tenant has consumed more energy than included in the rental price. Energy costs over 100€/month will be deducted from the tenant’s security deposit. The owner needs to justify the energy costs within 2 weeks after checkout.
Partner properties
Apartment owners in Canary Islands can also choose to collaborate with Globexs as a partner. Globexs partners manage their own bookings. Globexs is not involved in the contract and the payments. The role of Globexs is limited to generating leads in exchange for a commission. Becoming a Globexs partner might be a good option for:
-
Professional holiday makers that want to diversify and start selling to expats, companies and remote workers. -
Managers of coliving communities. -
B&B’s and aparthotel managers. -
Owners of shared apartments.
Holiday makers, B&B’s, aparthotels and owners of shared apartments / colivings can choose to become a Globexs partner.
What is the difference between a Globexs property and a partner property?
Globexs properties are housing facilities of which the booking process is managed by Globexs. Partner properties are housing facilities that are fully managed by a third party, a Globexs partner. In other words: A booking in a Globexs property is managed by Globexs. A booking in a partner apartment is managed by the Globexs partner.
Other things to know
-
Globexs does not require exclusivity. The owner has the right to publish the property through other sources. -
Globexs does not guarantee a minimum occupancy rate, but in general our average occupancy rate is 10,5 months / year. -
The rental price for an expat-rental is ususally 30-40% higher than the rental price for a traditional rental. However owners need to keep in mind that the occupancy is not a 100%, and that the owner is likely to having to bear some maintenance / cleaning costs in between 2 rentals. In the long run, expat rentals are only slightly more profitable than traditional rentals, but owners choose expat-rentals for the other advantages: Control over the apartment, minimum financial risk, etc. -
Sometimes the rent is paid by a company. If this is the case the owner has to pay more taxes than with a traditional rental. Globexs recommends the owner to consult a financial advisor. -
Every trimester Globexs provides an income statement to the owner on request. -

A Migrant People: Canary Islanders’ Routes of Resistance
By Enrique Galvan-Alvarez
The Canary Islands are an archipelago off the north-west coast of Africa. The island closest to the African continent is within one-hundred kilometres of the Moroccan coast, while the distance between the northernmost Canarian islet and the Spanish mainland is more than 900 kilometres. The archipelago consists of seven major islands and a number of minor, mostly uninhabited, islets. The population is currently concentrated on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Nowadays, the population of the Islands is above two-million, of which about three-quarters are Canarian. The islands are, politically, a part of Spain, despite having their own distinct fiscal regime and semi-independent institutions. Canarians, regardless of their ancestry, are nowadays considered full Spanish citizens. This however obscures the complex history and sense of identity that emerges from the geography, colonial past and migrant networks of the Canary Islands. Though in the contemporary imagination the Canaries are a mass tourist destination linked to beach tourism and package holidays, the Islands’ history is deeply enmeshed in colonial histories and resistance movements that shaped the history of the Atlantic.
Unlike the other archipelagos of the region (Azores, Madeira and Cape Verde), the Canary Islands were inhabited before the European ‘discovery’ and conquest of the 15th century. They are, after all, the closest to the African mainland and seemed to have been populated about one or two millennia before the European Conquest, depending on the island. These initial Amazigh, or Berber, settlers from north Africa had been neither Christianized nor Islamized and their culture emerged from the proto-Berber matrix with marginal Egyptian, Carthaginian and Roman influences. Indigenous Canarians were also called Guanches and their skin colour and features seemed to have been very similar to those of their new colonial masters: the only recently Christian peoples of Southern Europe, in particular of the Iberian Peninsula.
The conquest of the seven islands spanned almost a century (1402-1496) and was met with fierce resistance in at least four of the seven islands. In 1496, the Canaries were officially brought under Castilian sovereignty, though challenges to European/Spanish rule continued. This coincided with the beginning of the Spanish colonial expansion in the Americas and the Canaries, and the resistance of their original inhabitants, can be said to have been a blueprint and a laboratory for Spanish imperial conquest elsewhere. However, the Islands were also on the route to America and quickly developed a very important relation with the newly conquered territories across the Atlantic. Canarians, both of indigenous and European descent, were present in some of Columbus’ journeys. The flow of people from the Canaries to America was constant from the late 15th century to the middle of the 20th century.
Though some Canarians, especially those of European descent, were considered fellow Spanish by the conquerors of the Americas, Canarians, by and large, did not become assimilated or regarded as Spanish in the New World. The Canaries were not quite considered part of the Old World but neither were they entirely seen as the New World. The social and ethnic make-up of early colonial Canarian society resembled that of the Americas. A large contingent of the indigenous population mixed with European settlers from Spain, Portugal, Normandy and Genoa, who in turn introduced black African slaves and North African indentured labourers. Although the Islands were legally speaking part of the kingdom of Castile, Canarians were not seen as naturally Spanish or European, but as hybrid subjects, neither fully Spanish nor fully colonial or American. This led to the formation of distinct Canarian and Canarian-descendant communities across the Americas, who were characterised as ‘marginal whites’, below the ‘fully white’ Spanish elite but above Native Americans and African slaves.
The continued migration of Canarians to the Americas, due to the small size and poverty of the Islands and their subaltern position in colonial societies, created a singularly rebellious underclass. The first challenges to the Spanish imperial establishment came in the late 18th century from the Canarians of Venezuela, whose experience of oppression prompted them to seek to oust or replace the Spanish and Creole elite. Leaders such as Francisco de Miranda and Simón Bolívar were of Canarian ancestry and their projects are haunted by a powerful sense of in-betweenness which is typical of Canarian consciousness. Canarians and Canarian descendants also played a key role in the Cuban and Puerto Rican struggles for independence, as they made up a large section of the impoverished white peasantry and small business class. The iconic leader of Cuban independence, José Martí, had a Canarian mother and was acutely aware of the colonial condition of both Canarians and Cubans.
Through their contribution to various struggles, Canarians also aspired to lose their own stigmatized sense of identity. Canarian consciousness is based on colonial mimicry and desire; in the same way that they struggled, and failed, to be recognized by their Spanish colonial masters as equals, Canarians also joined the Latin American independence struggles wishing to shed their ‘white marginality’ and emerge as hybrid and empowered American subjects. Being Canarian was often associated with being part of a shameful underclass and thus Canarian rebelliousness was consequently expressed as a desire to relinquish Canarian identity.
Secundino Delgado, the first Canarian known to have articulated a Canarian national consciousness, reclaimed this subaltern space. Delgado was a Canarian migrant to the US, Cuba and Venezuela, whose life embodies the transatlantic networks of resistance of the late 19th century, which brought together the transnational anarchist movement and anti-colonial struggles (Cuba, Philippines). Delgado approached his involvement in the trade union and anarchist movements as a Canary islander, which for him involved a racialized, hybrid and subaltern subjectivity. His life reflects not only how the 19th century anarchist imagination informs Canarian consciousness, but also reveals the many connections between Canarian and American history, woven through the routes of the Canarian diaspora.
Delgado has become an iconic figure in the modern Canarian imagination. In this mural he appears surrounded by symbols from the indigenous past and the current nationalist movement’ (The author would like thank Ramón David Tosco y Díaz for letting him use this photograph)
The last large migration of Canarians towards the Americas took place in the 1950s and had Venezuela as its target. Since then, Canarians have started, for the first time in their history, to migrate to Europe. Although most have settled in Spain, relatively small Canarian communities can be found in the UK, Germany and Sweden. In Europe, Canarians seem to self-identify or be identified as Spanish, except within Spain where they are still perceived as in-between subjects and are often mistaken for Latin Americans. Despite this fact and the many instances of casual racism experienced by Canarians in the Spanish mainland, they have not formed a distinctly separate underclass. Canarians have overwhelmingly mixed with mainland Spaniards and today can be found in some positions of power and influence. Like their predecessors in the Americas, second generation Canarians in Europe quickly adopted the identity of their host countries, while keeping a distant connection to their native or ancestral land.
A small minority of Canarian emigrants and descendants have also returned to the Islands from the 1960s onwards. As living conditions worsened in Latin America and at the same time improved on the Islands with the boom of tourism, many American-born Canarian descendants sought Spanish passports so that they could settle back in the land of their ancestors. They have further Americanized the Islands and have helped to complicate and enrich a society that by the late 20th century had become, after centuries of mixing, a tight-knit mono-ethnic group.
Despite their invisibility in popular and academic discourse, Canarians represent a peculiar example of a transnational and migrant community that is as old as modern European imperialism. To Northern Europeans they appear Spanish, to the Spanish they are colonial or Latin American voices, to Latin Americans they present an ambivalent image, neither entirely alien nor fully local. In countries like Uruguay or Cuba, even to this day, the terms ‘canario’ or ‘isleño’ are used as slurs for uneducated peasants, which confirms the survival of their socio-ethnic identity as an underclass.
Through their many migrations, however, Canarian communities have succeeded to bargain power and negotiate their sense of dispossession into a deeply pragmatic and ambivalent attitude, something expressed through rebellion and sometimes through strategic accommodation.

Volcanic eruption occurs underwater at a depth of 60 meters
An underwater volcano eruption south of the Canary Islands may lead to the emergence of a new island or increase the territory of one of the existing ones. And if for tourists volcanic activity is a colorful sight, then for the inhabitants of the Canary Islands it is a serious blow to the conditions of their existence.
“He’s angry today! Look what’s going on!” says fisherman Elio Morales Rodriguez from the village of La Restinga on the south coast of El Hierro.
“That green spot on the water is a dead zone. Everything is dead. No fishermen, no diving schools, no tourists, just dead fish on the surface,” he says, looking out to sea.
For more than a month, three miles from El Hierro, the smallest of the seven Canary Islands, an underwater volcano has been erupting.
El Hierro is located 50 km southwest of its nearest neighbor, La Gomera, and 100 km from the most populated and popular of the Canary Islands, Tenerife.
At a depth of 60 meters, the volcano erupts gases and burning lava, some of which rises above the surface of the water.
The eruption almost wiped out the flow of tourists, but on El Hierro there were many film crews and photographers. Journalist Barbara Belt says the locals have no idea when this will all end and when they can return to normal life.
In the coastal village of La Restinga, many bars, restaurants and hotels have closed and many residents have already fled their homes.
On suitcases
According to scientists, the volcanic eruption is only part of a long process of volcanic evolution of the Canary Islands, which may lead to the emergence of a new island or the expansion of the southern coast of El Hierro.

However, there is also seismic activity in the north of the island.
“On the south coast, magma has broken through the crust. Now the question is what will happen on the north coast,” says Nemesio Pérez of the Institute of Volcanology of the Canary Islands.
Over the past four months, the institute has recorded about 11,000 tremors in different parts of El Hierro, the magnitude of one of them was 4.6 on the Richter scale.
Most of these tremors went unnoticed by the inhabitants of the island, but a few of them made the population nervous.
“The inhabitants of the island are literally sitting on suitcases in which they put a change of clothes, a radio, a blanket, a flashlight and a supply of food,” says Barbara Belt.
And Carmen, who works as a teacher in the north of El Hierro, describes activities with children in elementary school.
“When I blow the whistle, they try to get under the desks as quickly as possible. While the drill is going on, we sing songs. Then we line up and, holding on to the rope, go outside,” says Carmen.
Ash cloud?

Over the past four months, about 11,000 earthquakes have been recorded on El Hierro Island traffic. And, worst of all, the flow of tourists has actually dried up.
Maximo Rodriguez from La Restinga believes that the media is to blame for everything, which overdramatize the situation.
“Television and newspapers dramatize everything they can. They scare people away. Tell me, how often do you get the chance to watch such a spectacle?” Maximo Rodriguez asks the few patrons of the village bar.
Bar owners José Antonio Pérez and his wife Maria Fonte Armas speak the same way.
“Tourists from northern Europe come to us throughout the winter. Now everyone has canceled their trips. But in reality, everything is not as dramatic as the press writes. We know a lot about volcanic activity! You are on volcanic islands!”, – José Antonio Perez says
There is no danger of an ash cloud over El Hierro yet, says volcanologist Joachim Gottsmann of the University of Bristol in England.
“Currently, volcanoes only erupt underwater,” explains Gottsmann, who leads the European Commission-funded volcano survey.
However, he immediately adds that everything can change at any moment. And this means that a cloud of uncertainty hung over the inhabitants of the Canary Islands.

More than 1,000 people were evacuated due to forest fires that broke out on the island of Gran Canaria (Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands). It is reported by El Pais.
The evacuation of the population is taking place in the municipalities of Artenara, Tejeda and Galdar. As the Canary Islands rescue service clarifies on Twitter, the fires began on August 10 and have now affected more than 1 thousand hectares of forest.
The fire has not yet been brought under control. Now more than 200 servicemen and ten aviation units are involved in the extinguishing.

On Saturday, the Civil Guard detained the alleged perpetrator of the forest fire in Gran Canaria – it turned out to be a 55-year-old man. The possible cause of the fire was the use of a welding machine near the road.
According to La Razon, in the region covered by fires, precipitation is not expected in the near future, the air will warm up to plus 30 degrees, and the maximum wind speed will be 70 km/h.

Intelligent urban lighting in the Canary Islands will help the work of astronomers
26 July 2018
Puerto de la Cruz, Spain – Canary Islanders get even better stargazing with a new city street lighting system from Signify (Euronext: LIGHT), the world’s leading lighting technology company. Smart luminaires for outdoor lighting will be installed in Puerto de la Cruz, a city on the north coast of the island of Tenerife. Their main advantage is that they allow you to remotely adjust the brightness of light and, with the help of special optics, reduce its scattering, which could interfere with the work of nearby observatories.
This project is an example of our work to push the boundaries of LED solutions. The glow of the night sky, caused by the reflections of the lights of city lights, is a problem for astronomers around the world. The Milky Way is hidden from the eyes of one-third of the inhabitants of the Earth, including 60% of Europeans and almost 80% of North Americans. Our street lights are equipped with special LED modules with optical panels that are able to filter out the blue part of the light spectrum and direct it to the ground. These energy-efficient outdoor luminaires are wirelessly connected to a single lighting system and can be controlled from a distance, making it possible to increase or decrease the intensity of the light output remotely.

How to keep the night sky clear
The sky over the Canary Islands is the “clearest” in Europe. This creates unique conditions for observing the stars, which is why several world-famous observatories are located on the archipelago. The “clearness” of the sky is also protected by the Spanish law “On the protection of the quality of astronomical observations of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC)”. According to the document, the municipalities of Tenerife North and La Palma must take measures to reduce light pollution, such as a ban on the use of high-pressure mercury lamps and fluorescent lamps, except when it comes to lighting sports facilities and lighting advertising structures.
“For astronomers and connoisseurs of starry nights, there is nothing more important than the opportunity to observe the night sky. We want, on the one hand, to preserve this unique resource, and at the same time make our streets even safer for citizens and tourists,” said Lope Afonso, mayor of Puerto de la Cruz. “This state-of-the-art lighting solution meets the needs of local observatories and will further reduce electricity consumption for street lighting by around 65% while providing access to smart city capabilities. We want Puerto de la Cruz to become one of the most innovative cities in Europe and therefore have made the decision that Signify, as our partner, will bring Philips advanced lighting technology to our infrastructure.”
The city is getting smarter
The project involves re-equipping the city with 6000 street lights. It also includes a pilot program to use 100 SR Philips LED luminaires with connectors for sensors from other manufacturers (such as noise, air pollution, traffic monitoring, etc.) and the ability to connect to Signify applications . Testing this technology is part of the practical implementation of the municipality’s strategy for the development of smart city services, aimed at improving the service to residents, as well as protecting the environment. Installation of the Interact City managed solution is scheduled for August this year.
This project demonstrates Signify’s leadership in innovation in energy-efficient LED technology and the company’s leadership in IoT lighting solutions.
Signify N.V. is the new company name of Philips Lighting N.V starting May 16, 2018. Signify will finally transition to the new name by early 2019.

what benefits does the passport of an island state give?
Advantages of a Caribbean or Vanuatu passport
Caribbean or Vanuatu citizenship provides an investor with many opportunities – we list the main ones.
It is not necessary to live on the islands to retain citizenship. Citizenship by investment programs of Vanuatu, St. Lucia, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis do not require the investor and his family to reside on the islands.
Exception – Antigua and Barbuda. An investor needs to fly to the country within the first five years after he receives a passport and spend five days there.
How an investor can get a second citizenship for $100,000
Travel to more than 130 countries without visas. With a Caribbean passport, an investor can stay on the territory of the Schengen countries up to 90 days within 6 months.
Citizens of the Caribbean and Vanuatu can stay in the UK without a visa for up to 180 days in a row, as these countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Caribbean passport holders are eligible for visa-free entry to developing countries such as Hong Kong and Singapore, while Grenada citizens can stay in China without a visa for up to 30 days a year.
180 days
length of stay in the UK without a visa with a Caribbean passport
Freedom of movement gives an investor the opportunity not only to travel the world even during a pandemic, but also to actively develop their business in the global market.
How to get a second passport for $1000?
None. But we know how to get a passport for investments from $100,000. We talk about the citizenship of the Caribbean countries in a weekly newsletter.
Easier to get a US visa. With citizenship of Vanuatu or a Caribbean country, you can get a B-1 / B-2 visa to the United States for up to 10 years in two weeks. This visa allows you to stay in the United States up to 180 days a year for the purpose of vacation, medical treatment, participation in sports or cultural events, visiting relatives.
The Grenada passport allows you to obtain an E-2 business visa for an investment of at least $100,000 in a company in the United States. With this visa, the investor and his family members have the right to live, work and study in the country. The visa can be extended as long as the business generates income.
My sister married an American, became a citizen and lives in the USA. To see her, I needed to get a US visa.
My husband found out that it is possible to get a visa to the USA without any problems with a passport of another country. We considered the options and settled on the citizenship of Grenada. We were attracted by the fact that with the citizenship of this country, you can get an E-2 business visa to the United States and open a family business there.
We received Grenada citizenship for the whole family for investing in a hotel in the amount of $ 250,000, and after that we received an E-2 visa to the USA without any problems. For the second year we have been living in Florida, my husband and son have their own online auto parts store.
Alla
Received an E-2 visa to the USA with her husband and son through Grenada citizenship to meet her sister and develop the family business
Education for children in UK universities. The British education system is considered one of the best in the world. More than 500,000 foreign students come to the UK every year to study. Diplomas from British universities and schools are valued all over the world – we talk about this in the article “The best countries in terms of education level”.
British universities provide benefits to citizens of the Caribbean and Vanuatu, as these countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations. For example, you can enter the Queen Mary University of London.
Investor’s children can study in the British and American education systems and universities in the Caribbean. With the received diploma, you do not need to take additional exams when applying for a job in the USA, Great Britain.
An alternative location in a warm climate by the ocean. A Caribbean or Vanuatu passport holder does not need to live on the island to maintain citizenship status. The exception is the Antigua and Barbuda citizenship program. Under the terms of the program, an investor spends five days in the country during the first five years after receiving a passport.
The investor and his family will always have the opportunity to quickly come to a safe place if political or military conflicts begin in the country of permanent residence.
The Caribbean Islands are picturesque nature, tropical climate, warm sea with water temperature up to +27 °C all year round and developed infrastructure for tourists. Here everyone will find entertainment according to their interests: a relaxing holiday on a sandy beach, yachting, water sports, diving or a fun nightlife.
The richness of the Caribbean Sea: yachting, fishing and encounters with manatees
Tax optimization. Citizens of the Caribbean and Vanuatu can choose the most favorable tax system. For tax residents, there are no taxes on wealth, inheritance, gift, capital gains and global income.
In Vanuatu, the tax rates for tax residents and non-residents are the same. Companies registered in the country do not pay taxes for 20 years, but pay a fixed fee of $300 annually.
Favorable conditions for business. The company registration procedure takes up to two weeks. To register it in the Caribbean, you need to spend an average of $1,200. The size of the authorized capital for registering a foreign company is on average $50,000.
Business and taxes in the Caribbean
Many lines of business offer tax incentives, such as tax exemption for financial or educational services.
Information about the owner of the company and its registration is strictly confidential and is not published in the public domain. Financial reports are not required or are kept in a simplified form.
I received a Saint Kitts and Nevis passport back in 2015 in order to run my IT business. I became a tax resident of the country. Now I don’t pay tax on dividends. The state is not obliged to disclose information about the activities of my company on its territory.
With a Caribbean passport, I can visit the UK for business travel without a visa. Together with me, my wife and daughter received Caribbean citizenship.
Andrey

The Russian authorities are investigating the presence in the Canary Islands of undeclared property of Alexander Kozlov, the prosecutor of the Tula region, and his wife Alena Sokolskaya, head of the Klin district of the Moscow region.
The ABS newspaper has information that the spouses have real estate in Tenerife, which, apparently, was transferred to a trustee. Russian officials are not forbidden to own such real estate, but the problem is that the spouses did not declare it on time, that is, at the time of its purchase.
This is a real estate investment in the municipalities of Arona and Adeje, in the south of Tenerife. When the spouses began their official duties, they declared that they did not have property abroad. Alena Sokolskaya said that she was the victim of false news in connection with the Klin garbage dump.
Operations
The property was purchased between 2007 and 2010, when Kozlov served as deputy prosecutor of Moscow. In 2013, an inspection by the Prosecutor General’s Office was carried out, which did not find any possessions in Spain. Now Sokolskaya is the head of the Klinsky district of the Moscow region, and Kozlov is the prosecutor of the Tula region.
Their largest property is located in Arona. This is a two-storey bungalow in the municipality of Arona with an area of 109 m2 with a parking space. In the same municipality, they also have an apartment of 94 m2. In the municipality of Adeje, Sokolskaya has an apartment of 59 sq.m. and commercial premises with an area of 46 sq.m. In 2013, they passed to a close confidant.
Now the owner of the rest of the property is Dmitry Sokolsky, the son of Alena Sokolskaya from his first marriage. His Facebook page says that the young man lives and even studies in Tenerife at the University of La Laguna (Universidad de La Laguna).
Casinos and landfills
In 2005-2011, Kozlov was involved in the so-called “gambling case” associated with the owner of a network of underground casinos, Ivan Nazarov. Then it turned out that he had property in the UK.
Sokolskaya said that she would not answer journalists’ questions about her interests in the Canary Islands: “I will answer only to officials.” She stressed that she perfectly understands why everyone is interested in her actions in Spain: in particular, because of the high-profile story with the garbage dump.
In 2011, Ivan Nazarov was accused of organizing a network of underground casinos in the Moscow region. The network was founded in 2007. In 2010, it consisted of casinos in 15 cities of the Moscow region and restaurants in Klin, Pushkin and Shchelkovo. In 2008, when influential businessman Valery Kazakov was shot dead, Alexander Kozlov was Pushkin’s prosecutor.
The murder took place in broad daylight, right on the threshold of the Pushkin prosecutor’s office. Valery Kazakov was leaving the prosecutor’s office when several bullets were fired at him at close range from a Kalashnikov assault rifle. Then his throat was cut with a knife. Kazakov’s business was associated with waste and garbage disposal.
Galicia and the Canary Islands are changing the face of Spanish winemaking
20 November 2017
In the summer of 2016, the jamessuckling.com team held a large number of tastings throughout Spain. 800 different wines came into view of the tasters. For the second year in a row, all efforts are focused on finding regions that best reflect the development and potential of the Spanish lands. Galicia and the Canary Islands did not leave specialists indifferent.
Hitherto little-known wine-producing areas have begun to seriously change the entire scene of Spanish winemaking. With unique taste qualities, the wines of Galicia and the Canary Islands instantly brought these regions to the top of the wine-growing pyramid.
White and red wines were equally flawless and varied (many of them are created according to organic and biodynamic laws). In particular, red wines favorably emphasized their terroirs, were distinguished by lively energy and drinkability, without losing structure for further aging.
Galician vines
Familiar to every buyer, the classic regions of Rioja and Ribera del Duero continue to delight us with irresistible examples that are born thanks to the painstaking work of famous winemakers and stubborn revolutionaries, but some producers from these places still prefer to produce overly concentrated “black” wines that are not distinguished by elegance and balance. Adherents of this approach, along with big brands, are in danger of being left out of the new wave of exciting Spanish wines that the world is destined to experience in the future.
Wines of Galicia
Our favorite region was Galicia, although its wines did not end up with the highest ratings. The wine region of Galicia is located in the northwestern part of Spain, floating above Portugal like a cap on your head. Galicia has always been called “the end of the earth”. The climatic conditions here differ from the rest of Spain, where, due to the Mediterranean influence, summer temperatures rise significantly. The landscapes of Galicia are more likely to remind you of Ireland. The Atlantic Ocean is responsible for Galicia’s cool summers and rainy winters, which brings out the vibrant tannins and lively acidity in the wines, while focusing on a unique fruity character.
Vineyard in Rias Baixas
Within Galicia there are 5 appellations:
- Ribeira Sacra is home to interesting mencia red wines with great potential.
- Ribeiro – white wines with tropical notes from the Treishadura variety.
- Monterrey is the most mysterious and smallest area. In addition to mencia and godello, you can even find tempranillo here.
- Valdeorras is the best place for the godello variety, which was almost lost.
- Rias Baixas is the patrimony of the white variety Albariño. It was here that this variety managed to prove that it is possible to produce not only light summer wines from it.
“We strive to ensure that white and red wines can express the full potential of our microclimates and soils. I also like the freshness of our wines, I try to emphasize it”, – says Eulogio Pomares, head winemaker and owner of Zarate, which is the leader in the Rias Baixas region.
As for the Canary Islands, we were struck by the wines of Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago. The wineries of Envínate and Suertes del Marqués skillfully handle the fine delicate character and natural balance of local wines influenced by volcanic soil (volcanic pumice in particular).
Bodegas Tierra de Frontos in Tenerife
Tenerife wines mainly consist of a mixture of local grape varieties – Listan Negro, Malvasia Negra, Baboso, Vihariejo, Listan Blanco, Marmajuelo, Albillo. During the tastings, we could not fail to note the influence of the wonderful terroirs of the island and the Atlantic on the character of the wines produced. According to Jonathan Garcia Lima, owner of a leading winery in the verdant Orotava Valley, all good things are just beginning for the local appellation.
“These vineyards have been here for 500 years. But we have done an important job – we have finalized wine-growing practices and increased care for our lands. The result speaks for itself”, – Jonathan Garcia Lima.
At the end of our journey, we realized that the Ribeira Sacra area (Galicia) is one of the most attractive places for the production of red wines. Local wines have a mineral and rocky character, while slender acidity and tannins make them fresh and incredibly drinkable. With all this, they cannot be denied complexity; in taste, these wines evoke pleasant memories of the steep slopes of the area.
Appellation Ribeira Sacra
A rare 1986 white wine Marques de Murrieta Gran Reserva Castillo Ygay from the good old Rioja received 100 points in the entire Spanish tasting. Created for the most part on the basis of the Viura variety, which grew in an old vineyard, the wine was aged in a barrel for 21 years (!) And an additional 6 years in cement tanks. A truly outstanding terroir wine that can be classified as one of the best white wines in Spain and around the world.
“The successful future of Spanish wines does not lie in industrial wines that do not at all reflect the character of the regions in which they are produced. We must produce and promote artisan wines that best express our lands”, says revolutionary winemaker Telmo Rodriguez, who was one of the first to draw the attention of the world to the unknown terroirs of Spain.
