The 13 Best Hotels in the Canary Islands for Families

Protected sandy beaches, fun water parks, and excellent whale- and dolphin-watching make Spain’s Canary Islands a great choice for a family getaway. We’ve visited hundreds (and hundreds) of hotels in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote to find resorts with the most family-friendly features, like large or apartment-style guest rooms, beach proximity, pools for kids, and on-site entertainment.

See All Canary Islands Hotels

1

Puerto Rico, Caribbean

Built into the cliffs overlooking Amadores beach on Gran Canaria, the Gloria Palace Royal Hotel & Spa is a sprawling oceanfront resort with beach access and stunning vistas of the water. The two outdoor pools are definite highlights, as they are large and overlook the beach. There is also an indoor playroom with a ball pit and jungle gym, as well as the outdoor children’s area and kiddy pool. Games and entertainment tailored specifically for the little ones are also offered.

2

La Caleta, Adeje, Tenerife

Hotel Suite Villa Maria is a quiet village-like sanctuary perfect for young families. Its 78 duplex villas are more like vacation homes than typical hotel rooms. (Maybe make that dream vacation homes, since here you can cook dinner and leave the kitchen disorder to housekeeping.) They start at 800 square feet and come in one-, two-, and three-bedroom configurations, all with full kitchens, living rooms, and multiple bathrooms (even one-bedroom villas have guest bathrooms on the first floor). The villas are positioned around a peaceful pool complex with three pools (one for kids), an enclosed playground, and a pool bar with barbecue. The hotel has a teen room with four PlayStations, and an adjacent supervised kids’ club with activities like face-painting, bingo, water aerobics, Play-Doh, ping-pong, balloons, live music, and a nightly free mini disco. When we visited, the mini disco was just getting started in the main square, but the participants were largely distracted by the exotic bird show that was setting up a few feet away.

3

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

This 271-room luxury hotel is kid-friendly and large — with five buildings, two pools, three restaurants, and a wide array of on-site amenities — but sprawling grounds allow for uncrowded and mostly serene spaces. Family-friendly features include a heated kiddy pool, playground, and kids’ club with activities, as well as outdoor tennis court, a nine-hole putting green, an indoor squash court, and loaner bikes.

4

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

HD Parque Cristobal Tenerife’s bungalow concept is unusual in Playa de las Americas, an area where most hotels are big-box balconied buildings. But Parque Cristobal’s low-rise layout doesn’t mean it’s not lively: a digital concierge in the lobby lists day’s agenda, which might include water polo, yoga, sangria workshops, rifle shooting, shuffleboard, and football tournaments, and live entertainment is staged every night in a subterranean nightclub.  The enclosed grounds mean that kids can rove about freely with newly acquired friends without parents’ constant concern. For this reason, and because of its easy stroller access, Parque Cristobal is first and foremost for families with children. The hotel’s Kid Suites were renovated in 2015, and come with changing tables, high chairs, bottle warmers, and food processors. Their colorful second bedrooms feature two beds, beanbag chairs, and PlayStation 2s.

5

Meloneras, Gran Canaria

There is always a lot going on at this sprawling, African-inspired resort, with a kids’ club with daily activities, two kiddy pools (one of them with slides), and a packed entertainment program for adults and children. Additionally, there is a long sandy beach down the street. Just be aware of the handful of extra fees, including for Wi-Fi, parking, and in-room safes.

6

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

The kids’ club at this large, luxurious resort features a kiddy pool, daily activities, and an area for teens with a PlayStation, board games, and a foosball table. Tennis courts, a putting green, yacht day trips, and an on-site astronomical observatory that hosts guided star-gazing nights keep kids and their parents entertained.

7

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

Costa Adeje Gran Hotel is a large, family-friendly hotel conveniently located a short walk from the beach, bars, restaurants, and shops. With three large pools, two restaurants (one particularly good), optional all-inclusive rates, and a kids’ club with daily indoor and outdoor activities, the hotel offers a solid upscale resort-style stay in a central location. However, some guests may find rooms a little plain for a hotel that advertises itself as a luxury property, and extra fees can add up.

8

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

An all-inclusive resort catering to families and couples, the h20 Costa Adeje looms large as a 467-room property. Its on-site beach is small and rocky, but the hotel runs free shuttles to Las Américas beach. There is also free Wi-Fi, a buffet restaurant (plus two others: one Japanese and one a la carte), and a  kids’ club offering daily activities, a playground, and mini-disco at night.

9

Costa Adeje, Adeje, Tenerife

Melia Jardines del Teide is located a 15-minute walk from Playa del Duque, one of Costa Adeje’s best beaches. The hotel is a popular pick among families, thanks to its kids’ club, a playground, a kiddy pool section, and kid-friendly entertainment, so be warned that it can get busy. Wi-Fi comes at an extra charge, but all in all, this is probably the area’s best all-inclusive.

10

San Agustin, Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

Though the 448-room Gloria Palace San Agustin is not right on the sea, it offers impressive views of the beach, which is about a 10-minute walk away. The property is conveniently located near one of the main highways and the shops of Playa del Ingles. It caters to families in particular with its kids’ club, table tennis, child-friendly entertainment, and kiddy pool. All ages can enjoy the extensive pool complex, which spans two levels that house two outdoor pools (in addition to the one for children only) and plenty of lounge chairs.

11

Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Families and groups looking for an all-inclusive beachfront hotel with plenty of dining and entertainment options won’t be disappointed with Sandos Papagayo Beach Resort. With 488 rooms, three pools, and several restaurants, the most common issue guests have is getting lost on the grounds. Guest rooms vary in size but even the lower-category room types have terraces and some rooms have beautiful water views, along with dated decor. The hotel offers daily activities for kids and adults, including a sports complex with tennis and basketball courts, miniature golf, and a kids’ club with a playground and lots of toys and activities.  Las Coloradas Beach is easily accessible via a direct path from the hotel.

12

Puerto Calero, Lanzarote

This family-friendly all-inclusive resort has serene grounds and ocean views. In keeping with the many all-inclusive resorts that line the shores of the Canary Islands, the Hesperia Lanzarote Hotel offers the standard amenities one would expect: four outdoor pools (including two that are heated year round), three decent restaurants (an international buffet, a Mediterranean eatery, and an a la carte restaurant serving regional cuisine), and kid-friendly features, such as a kiddy pool, a kids’ club, a playground, and a mini-golf course.

13

Costa Teguise, Lanzarote

The 368-room Sands Beach Resort is a mid-range beachfront property popular with families and older couples seeking value. Spacious apartment-style rooms can be hit or miss, as some have been renovated and feature simple but contemporary decor and updated kitchens, while others feel like they haven’t been touched in years, with dated elements including tube TVs. Aside from the on-site beach, the property offers dozens of daily activities for all ages — including seven pools, a restaurant, a tennis court, non-motorized water sports, a game room, and nightly entertainment — but it’s mostly quiet thanks to its sprawling grounds.

Why choose and where to stay in El Hierro?

El Hierro, one of the smallest and furthest islands in Canary Island range, it offers a unique experience to unknown. To get there, simply take a ferry or plane from both Tenerife or Gran Canaria islands.

Which is the least touristy Canary Island?

While Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote may be packed with tourists during summer and winter, Fuerteventura receives slightly fewer tourists although it is the second-largest island among all Canary Islands.

You can find the least tourists in La Palma, La Gomera, El
Hierro, and La Graciosa.

La Palma is the furthest one and it takes up to 8
hours to get there by ferry or 4 hours by plane.

However, you can get an amazing getaway during your visit to Tenerife visiting La Gomera or El Hierro.

From Gran Canaria, you can take a flight to El Hierro and enjoy a couple of days in total nature beauty and tranquillity.

If you travel to Lanzarote, it is the best place to plan a getaway to the least explored and most peaceful island, La Graciosa.

So, what is your best Canary Island to visit now?

What is the best time to visit the Canary Islands?

The Canary Islands are famous for their all-year-round sunshine, and warm nice water at any beach you go to. So, when to visit the Canary Islands?

The best time to visit the Canary Islands is either between March and May or September and November. Summer is one of the most expensive seasons, all the islands are overpacked and hotels are overcrowded. This just makes everything significantly more expensive and more challenging to get.

We went to Gran Canaria in the last days of September until mid-October and are absolutely convinced that this is the best time to go. We felt like VIP guests with very few tourists around us. The majority were Canarians. The weather was pleasant, the beaches were not packed, and our daily routine for two weeks ended up being in the water anyways. Plus, no queues, cheaper tours, car rental, and hotel prices.

Are the Canary Islands safe for tourists?

Apart from figuring out which Canary Island to visit, it is important to look into other aspects of your future travel.

In relation to safety, the Canary Islands are extremely safe and have a low crime risk, especially in tourist areas. There are good police presence and safety regulations, especially at the beaches.

Are the Canary Islands expensive to visit?

It is no wonder the Canary Islands is one of the most popular destinations by UK tourists and now I know why. While you can get a cheap flight to one of the islands for as little as £20 GBP ($25 USD) one-way flying with a low-cost airline, you are also guaranteed to get tanned, swim in warm water without getting too much wind at the beach, and enjoy all-inclusive hotel deal for much lower than you would get it in the UK, or frankly speaking, anywhere else in Europe. I’d say the alternative could be a resort area in Egypt or Turkey.

If you get an all-inclusive deal, you won’t need to worry about spending your money on food, or alcohol drinks at all. So, the rest is up to you on how much you want to spend on tours and souvenirs.

Can you drink the water in the Canary Islands?

Most of the tap water in the Canary Islands is drinkable as it is desalinated seawater, but it tastes funny. While it is safe to drink, it is up to you whether to buy bottled water or not. During our stay, we have got a couple of bottled spring water, 8L each. Also, every hotel will provide you with any water amount you want offering it one of the bars next to the pool with slides.

What language do they speak in the Canary Islands?

The official language is Spanish. We found very few tourists
when we went to Gran Canaria and spoke Spanish daily. The only tourists we
found were the hotel animators.

In the majority of the Canary Islands, there are many people who speak English because there are lots of tourists throughout the year, so you will be safe to travel there language-wise.

The second most spoken language is German. In fact, many hotels have signs and menus in three languages, limited to Spanish, English, and German.

Canary Island Families

On March 9, 1731, fifty-five Canary Islanders arrived at Béxar,
becoming the first municipality in the Spanish province of Texas

The last phase of the strategy was to establish a civil settlement or presents in
Texas.  To that end, on February 14, 1719, the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo proposed
to King Philip V of Spain that 400 families be transported from the Canary Islands,
Galicia, or Havana to populate the province of Texas. His plan was approved, and
notice was given the Canary Islanders to furnish 200 families; the Council of the
Indies suggested that 400 families should be sent from the Canaries to Texas by way
of Havana and Veracruz.

By June 1730, twenty-five families had reached Cuba and ten families had been sent
on to Veracruz before orders from Spain to stop the movement arrived.

Under the leadership of Juan Leal Goraz, ten families started out from the Canary
Islands.  Within a month after the group arrived at Cuatitlán in September of 1730,
the number increased by marriages to fifteen families and four single men, a total
of fifty-six persons.  This is evident from a comparison of the list of the families
taken at Cuatitlán, September 9, 1730 with the official list taken just before they
left Cuatitlán, November 8, 1730.  At Saltillo in the state of Coahuila a new list
and inventory was taken on January 31, 1731.  They were provided with an escort of
10 soldiers to the Presidio de San Juan Bautista and from there they where escorted
to the presidio of San Antonio de Béxar by Francisco Dubal, where they arrived at
eleven o’clock in the morning on March 9, 1731.

The Alvarez Travieso and the Arocha families apparently joined the original party
of settlers after their arrival at Cuatitlán.  A new and final list was made after
arrival at San Antonio in order to confer upon them the title of nobility, as first
settlers and upon their descendants, the title of Hijos Dalgos or Hidalgos, mandated
and so honored by the king of Spain, Philip V, each family head could use the term
“Don” before his name, denoting his title.  Today, there are many individuals and
families who are descendants from these original Canary Island colonists.

Herodotus called the Garden of Hesperides, Homer the Elysian Fields and Pliny the
Fortunate isles. Christopher Columbus visited them in 1492. The name Canaries is
derived from canis, the Latin word for “dog.” Early explorers named them for the
many dogs they found there. The isles share an eternal spring climate but they differ
dramatically amongst each other.

The original inhabitants of the Canaries were a race known as the Guanches, a name
derived from guan, meaning man or people, and achinch, meaning white mountain in
an obvious reference to Tenerife’s snow-capped Mount Teide. The natives lived a Stone
Age existence of shepherding and very rudimentary agriculture. They buried their
dead and, in the case of chieftains, mummified the, much like the ancient Egyptians.
In Tenerife, Bencome, the mencey or leader of the tribe, fiercely resisted the conquistadors
with his flint exes and slings, while in Gran Canaria the ruling guanarteme, Semidán,
welcomed the European strangers and established truces.

Modern contact with the Canaries began to develop in the Middle Ages as sailors from
peninsular Spain arrived to plunder the isles of their orchids, which were used to
make dye, and of their inhabitants, who were enslaved. Conquest in earnest only began
with the Norman explorer Jean de Béthencourt who, in 1402 , claimed Lanzarote on
behalf of his feudal lord Henry III of Castile and who later became king of the islands.

One of the few remaining possessions of Spain, the Canary Islands lie in the Atlantic
Ocean about 60 miles (95 kilometers) from the northwest coast of Africa.   Their
total area is 2,796 square miles (7,242 square kilometers). The Canaries are divided
into two provinces of Spain Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.  They comprise
seven principal islands Tenerife, Grand Canaria, La Palma, Hierro, Gomera, Lanzarote,
and Fuerteventura and several smaller uninhabited ones.  They were called Fortunatae
Insulae (Fortunate Islands, or Isles of the Blest) in ancient Roman legends.

During the settlement of Texas in the early 1700’s, the Spanish government recognized the need to both Christianize and civilize the Indians of Texas. They also realized they would need to keep the French from encroaching on Spanish territory. They developed a three-fold strategy. First, was establish a series of missions to bring Christianity to the Indians.  Next, protect those missions by a series of presidios or forts and finally, populate the territory with civil settlements loyal to New Spain.  The presidio of San Antonio de Béjar was established on the San Antonio River in 1718.  That same year, the mission of San Antonio de Valero was moved from the Rio Grande to the vicinity of the presidio, completing the first two stages of the three-fold strategy.  Béxar, as it was known, was populated only by a small group of solider’s and their few families. A civil government did not exist at this time.

Karen, better known as Travelmadmum, realised her tribe had been suffering from a bad case of them when they escaped to Fuerteventura with Barceló just after Christmas for a Canary Islands holiday with children.Winter is never an easy time, and it can be even more trying when you’ve got kids. Once the Christmas lights have come down and the holidays are over, the cold months stretch out before us, with a long wait until spring decides to deign to make an appearance.Karen and her husband Shaun decided what they and their two little ones, Esme and Quinn, needed was an escape from the not-so-Great British Winter to the sunshine, in the form of family-friendly holidays in the Canary Islands. And, as far as winter family holidays go, this one definitely did not disappoint.

Who is Travelmadmum?

Travelmadmum, Karen Edwards, is an Instagram sensation with over 105 thousand followers and a hugely successful blog, who first gained media attention when she and her husband Shaun took to the road during her maternity leave. They like to call it a baby gap year. Her little girl Esme was only 10 weeks old when she went on her first adventure!Since then, they’ve added little Quinn to the tribe, and he’s been exploring the world almost since day one, too! This tiny person has already been to 27 countries, Esme to 41, and their mum and dad to 81. And they’re not going to be stopping any time soon!

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bsds_nfhCHE/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_medium=loading

As Karen points out on her blog, she and her husband don’t have high-powered jobs or sky-high salaries. They’re just travel lovers, who want to share that love with their kids. They simply made the decision back when she first got pregnant to make the most of her maternity leave to spend quality time with their new arrival whilst discovering the world, and have never looked back.As Karen puts it, ‘the overall aim (of the blog) is to inspire like-minded, travel-loving parents – your travel days do not have to be over. It’s all about incorporating your little person into your way of life.’ Travelling with young children doesn’t have to be impossible!Currently based in London, the thought of Canary Islands winter holidays was something they just couldn’t resist.

Canary Islands family holidays: Fuerteventura winter sun

Right after the Christmas madness was over, in need of an escape from the cold of London, Karen, Shaun and the kids packed their bags and headed for the Barceló Castillo Beach Resort on the shores of Fuerteventura for a child-friendly Canary Islands holiday. The kids couldn’t believe their eyes when they got out onto the balcony of their apartment and saw the playground, beach and swimming pool, their stomping ground for the next few days.As it’s one of the best child-friendly hotels in the Canary Islands, there are all kinds of kids’ activities laid on at the Castillo Beach Resort’s kids’ club to keep little ones occupied whilst their parents have a chance to relax and unwind, as this family found out. One of Esme’s favourite parts was the kids’ disco, which she really got stuck into!Karen was particularly grateful that there was plenty to keep the kids amused after having been keeping them entertained all Christmas long, as we’re sure any parents out there will understand only too well. They spent their days soaking up the glorious winter sunshine, the perfect antidote to all those coughs and colds that we all fall victim to at this time of year, especially the smallest people amongst us.Whilst she was in Fuerteventura, Karen had lots of people sending her messages asking whether it was really that warm at the beginning of January, struggling to believe it when looking out of their window’s in the wintry UK, dreaming of short breaks to the Canary Islands. Her video answer spoke louder than words. She uploaded a video story from the sandy beach showing Shaun paddling in the shallows with Esme on his shoulders, both in full swimming gear, soaking up the gentle rays. If that doesn’t prove that Canary Islands family holidays are the best way to get a bit of sun at this time of year without going too far from home, we don’t know what does!

Puerto Rico is a great resort for families with small children

Gran Canaria is mainly a sun and beach destination, so spending time at the beach will probably be your no.1 activity with the kids (or time spent by the pool as well, depending on what you prefer).

In our opinion, the best family beaches in Gran Canaria are Playa Amadores, Playa de Puerto Mogan and Anfi Beach.

These beaches are especially suitable for kids because they are well equipped and have calm waters, which make them safe even for small children and babies. All these beaches have plenty of restaurants nearby, so it’s easy to grab lunch or some drinks during the day.

6. Poema del Mar

Photo credit: Poema del Mar website

This is a really interesting place for kids, but for adults as well. Poema del Mar is located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the island’s capital and it’s part of the same group as Loro Parque and Siam Park in Tenerife. Poema del Mar is home to a giant Aquarium with many species of marine life, along with many other exhibits that will keep you occupied for a few hours.

11. Aqualand

Aqualand is the largest water park in Gran Canaria, located very close to Maspalomas.

If you’re staying in the area and your kids really want to go to a water park, then you might give it a go for the day. We have included this park on our list because we think that you should be aware of its existence on the island, although it does not have very good reviews and prices are quite high in the park for food and drinks.

12. Lago Taurito Water Park

This is a much smaller water park than Aqualand, but their prices are reasonable and you can have something to do even for very small kids. which island to choose for vacation?

When the beach season ends on the mainland of Spain, many tourists turn their eyes towards its island part – the Canary archipelago. In Russia, a situation has historically developed that when we say Canaries, we mean Tenerife, but in fact, the Canaries are 7 inhabited islands, each of which has more or less developed tourism. I was lucky enough to visit 6 of them, and I would like to tell you about the features of recreation on each of these islands.

    Tenerife

The most famous of them is, of course, Tenerife. It is very popular with Russian tourists, which is completely justified. Possessing excellent climatic characteristics, this island is interesting for its nature and landscape, as well as excellent infrastructure for recreation for both the elderly and families with children and young people. The popularity of the island is also explained by the ability to fly to it without a transfer in just 7 hours. The island has a well-developed hotel base. You can stay in modest and inexpensive apartments, as well as in luxury hotels with a huge territory, luxurious interiors and excellent service.

The island is big enough, so even during a long vacation you can always entertain yourself with something and keep yourself busy. Here is the highest point in Spain – the Teide volcano, which is visited by almost all vacationers on the island.

Good beaches, good restaurants, nightclubs and amusement parks make the island popular with outdoor enthusiasts. Those who prefer a beach holiday get great pleasure from swimming in the ocean, walking along the embankments and excellent local cuisine. The most popular park in Tenerife is Loro Park, which is home to a huge number of animals and birds. Shows of parrots, dolphins and seals are held here. Another park of interest is Siam Park Water Park with its state of the art water slides, pools and restaurants. There are also several other theme parks, ancient towns and scenic landscape attractions on the island.

Tenerife is perfect for all types of tourists. The only caveat is that since the island is located in the Atlantic Ocean, even in summer the water rarely warms up above 23 degrees.

    Gran Canaria

The second most popular island is Gran Canaria. The island is also very interesting and unique. Of course, the entertainment industry is somewhat more modest here, but nevertheless, you won’t be bored here either. The island has several beautiful resorts, the most popular of which is Maspalomas, located in the southern part of the island. The resort is famous for its endless dunes and sandy beaches.

Here you can stay in luxurious hotels of many European chains. There are very few vacationers from Russia on the beaches of Gran Canaria. For children, Palmitas Park, a water park and Sioux city were built on the island. The island will appeal to lovers of mountain landscapes, good beaches and people who are interested in a relaxing holiday away from noisy cities.

    Lanzarote

A very peculiar place is the island of Lanzarote, very popular with German tourists. This island’s landscape and scenery immediately shows its guests that it is of volcanic origin. A visit to Lanzarote combines a relaxing beach holiday and sightseeing. A characteristic feature of the island is the symbiosis of nature and design: the famous artist Cesar Manrique had a hand in almost all of its interesting places. He designed a restaurant in a cave, built unusual buildings all over the island, and created a very picturesque cactus park in an abandoned quarry. It is he who owns the emblem of the Timanfaya volcano park – a funny imp that you will meet on the roads of the island.

Timanfaya National Park is an amazing sight: many volcanoes of various shades, standing in the middle of a desert area where there is practically no vegetation.

Here in the park, in the El Diablo restaurant, you can taste dishes cooked on a volcanic grill and make sure that the volcano is not extinct, but simply asleep. Lanzarote has enough beaches, both wide sandy and small, hidden in secluded bays. Due to the very sparse vegetation, the island may seem somewhat uncomfortable to some. For a leisurely tour of the island, combined with rest, 7-10 days are needed.

    Fuerteventura

Lanzarote’s closest neighbor, the island of Fuerteventura, is nothing like it. If the main color of Lanzarote is dark brown and black, then Fuertevetura has a light beige hue. The name of the island in Spanish means “strong wind”, and this is the true truth. Fuerteventura is a paradise for windsurfers who come here from all over Europe.

The island is bordered by sand dunes, and in the center of the island there are mountains that form a very peculiar lunar landscape.

In principle, the main concept of holidays in Fuerteventura is windsurfing and relaxation. There are no big cities, huge amusement parks, the infrastructure of the island includes everything you need, but nothing more. The island is suitable for a relaxing pastime or water sports.

    La Gomera

The island of La Gomera is very often visited by tourists as part of excursions from neighboring Tenerife. In general, this is justified, since the island is small and cannot boast of luxurious beaches, noisy discos or modern amusement parks. Its main attraction is the Garajonay Natural Park, where a relic laurel forest grows, which is under the protection of UNESCO.

The island is cozy and provincial. Its capital, San Sebastian, is a pleasant place for a day trip. Its main legend and attraction is the well, from where Christopher Columbus drew water before setting sail for America.

The island is very interesting for lovers of hiking in nature. The hotel base of the island is poorly developed.

    La Palma

Probably the least known island among Russians is La Palma – the greenest of all the Canary Islands. Despite its modest size, the island has enough sights to interest tourists for 5-7 days. There are several good beaches, interesting volcanic parks where you can walk and see the craters of volcanoes. In the center of the island there is a very picturesque gorge, viewing platforms and the highest point of the island – Roque de los Muchachos. There is an observatory next to it. A very winding serpentine leads to Roque de los Muchachos, so when planning a trip, take more time for this part of the tour. Near the city of El Paso is the visitor center of the Caldera de Taburiente Natural Park, which has many hiking trails of varying difficulty. When visiting La Palma, you should understand that hardly anyone will entertain you on the island, so the main purpose of the visit should be to relax and explore the natural beauties.

    Hierro

The smallest island of the archipelago is called Hierro. The island has a very diverse landscape, part of it is covered with the remains of volcanoes, solidified lava, the coast of the island is formed by high rocks and cliffs. Despite this, the island is quite green, its central part is covered with thickets of relict laurel forests and ferns. Hierro has small beaches covered with volcanic sand. The island is of interest to diving enthusiasts. Currently, Hierro is not very popular with tourists, as in 2011 there was little volcanic activity on it.

    Choosing a holiday destination

So which of the islands is the best choice to visit if you are visiting the Canary Islands for the first time? Well, probably, after all, Tenerife. Here you can easily find the necessary balance between relaxation on the beach, educational pastime and numerous entertainments.

From Tenerife you can also visit the island of La Gomera.

The second place, in my opinion, is shared by Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. When choosing one of them, it is necessary to take into account personal preferences and preferences. Gran Canaria is greener and more familiar to the eye, Lanzarote is completely unusual and almost devoid of vegetation.

Fuerteventura is the perfect choice for windsurfers or people who just want to relax and unwind. If you want to arrange an excursion part of your vacation, you can swim in Lanzarote by ferry.

La Palma is for gourmets who have tried all the other parts of the Canary archipelago and are looking for something new. The island itself is very wonderful, but it is quite difficult to get to it. In addition, for many people who are accustomed to a fun and noisy resort life, La Palma may seem too boring.

Joan Torrent retired. He received prizes in clothing and did not take Rosell to Cantera

Joan Torrent Sole (born in Barcelona on 6 January 1941) is a rare type of professional dedicated to one club. Fully committed to Barcelona, he has been linked to the club for 54 years at various stages of his life. Torrent joined the Blue Garnet as a player in 1959 and remained with the Blues until 1968 before returning to coach from 1975 to 2021. An example of constancy and fidelity.

Torrent started playing football in Palamos (Girona, Catalonia) where he lived between the ages of 6 and 16. His mother, Maria, was sent to Girona by doctor’s order for treatment of some ailments, and took little Joan with her, leaving the rest of the family in Barcelona’s Gracia district in the care of his father, who was fond of cycling and was a big movie lover.

Joan started his career in the Infantile category of the Palamós club, and soon Girona took him to their Juvenil. He excelled as a defensive midfielder due to his physique, physical and technical qualities. His debut for the Girona first team came in season 1958/59 at the age of 17 under the direction of Ricardo Gagliart. The legendary Barcelona player Josep Samitier laid eyes on him and took him to Condal (the predecessor of Barcelona B) for 400,000 pesetas and a friendly match at Vista Alegre (former Girona stadium). “I already have a replacement for Luis Suarez [Miramontes],” Torrent recalls the words “Sami.” “He was wrong,” he adds with a laugh, making it clear that “Luisito was Luisito.”

    Barça

He spent two seasons at Condal under Gomez de Lecube and Enric Rabassa. Of the latter, Torrent recalls that he “was a miracle coach and a great person.” From 1959 to 1960 he trained with the Barca first team and made his debut in a friendly in Manresa. “I was shaking and E.E. (Helenio Herrera) noticed my nervousness. I was 18, and I had to play with players whom I saw only on the cards. He told me to calm down, that I would eat all the opponents … And so it happened, I had a great match, ”recalls Joan.

Condal were relegated in 1960/61 and Torrent was loaned to Segunda side Las Palmas. Another blue garnet legend, Ladislao Kubala, advised him to head to the Canary Islands, because there his game, similar in style to island school football, would make great progress. He guessed. Torrent shot while playing for Las Palmas, during which time he also served in the army (22 months as a volunteer) and found the love of his life. October 8 marks the 60th anniversary of his marriage to Violeta, a native of the Canary Islands.

At Las Palmas, he played alongside Yellow legends such as Tonono, Germán, Gilberto, Ulasia, Juan Luis and Guedes, with whom he formed a historic duo in midfield. His third season at Las Palmas ended with a promotion to La Liga under Vicente Daudera. Torrent wanted to stay, but Barça demanded him back. He signed a three-year contract and made his debut under Cesar on 27 September 1964 in A Coruña (2-1 victory).

That season, Torrent was blamed and infamous for Amancio’s injury in the Barça-Madrid match on 28 February 1965 years (dislocation of the peroneal tendon). The truth, however, was that the Madridista entered the Camp Nou pitch already in trouble, as he himself revealed when meeting Torrent at Chus Pereda’s funeral in 2011. Amancio did not appear on the field until October. And Torrent had to endure an unfair campaign of harassment and humiliation.

With the start of the 1965/66 season, Barça’s new coach Roque Olsen suggested that he leave: “With Müller and Gallego you’ll be on the bench for a long time,” he told him. And Torrent, who wanted to play, agreed to a new lease. This time – in the “Sabadell” under the leadership of Pasiegito. He stayed there for two years, missing six months due to hepatitis and scoring a life-saving goal for Celta in the Liga play-off. Returned to Barça in season 1967/68 when Salvador Artigas was already the coach. He played only six matches, the last on May 31, 1968, in the Cup against Real Sociedad (6:1).

    Sabadell

Torrent asked to be released and signed a contract with the Sabadell club for three years. There he was again met by Pasieguito and many former Barça players: Pujol, Vidal, Montesinos, Marañon, Alfonceda, Saballa, Pereda… He recalls that President Ricardo Rosson, a textile businessman, paid bonuses for winning with suits from his factories. During the time spent there, Joan managed to fill a whole closet with them.

    Composition of Sabadell in 1966-69

Bottom: Saballa, Montesinos, Seminario, Muñoz, Pujol

After his stage with the Woolies, Torrent decided to stop, although he had offers, including from Cesar’s Cultural Leonesa. He retired in June 1971 and received a regional coaching certificate, but still played football at the end of the season 1972/73 with Girona in Tercer.

Torrent managed clubs such as Palamos (brought to the next category), Esparreguera and Mollet (rescued from relegation), until in 1975 he received an offer from Laureano Ruiz to lead the Aleviins of Barca. And he remained on the coaching staff for 46 years, until 2021. During one of the screenings, he refused 12-year-old Sandro Rosel. “I sent him home and when he became president he reminded me of that,” says Joan, adding that the future Barça president thanked him for his frankness. Among his wards were Amor, Guardiola, Xavi, Gabry, Puyol, Piqué…

In 2021, an employee of the club called him and said that he would not continue to work, and today Torrent regrets that after so many years he was not informed of the separation in a more beautiful way. Torrent is still linked to Barça through AJB. He started out with a socio card number 350 and is now number 13. “Unification is amazing,” he says. And he remembers the “brothers” Manchon, Tejada, Verges, Ramallets and Zhensana, with whom he experienced so many moments of real “blue garnet” passion.
