What to do in Santa Cruz de La Palma & places of interest

From a tourist’s point of view, Santa Cruz de La Palma is a good place to stay in La Palma if you want to have an active holiday and explore lots of corners around the island. Being the capital, the city is well connected with most other places in La Palma and it’s easy to get around, either by using public transport or by renting a car, which we absolutely recommend.

1. Plaza de España

Considered by critics as the best Renaissance-style complex in the Canary Islands, Plaza de España has functioned throughout history in its dual use as the main square, intended for the celebration of civil acts, and as a square of the Church of El Salvador.

If you’re interested in Canarian architecture, then in this main square of Santa Cruz de La Palma you can see several buildings of interest: the house Monteverde (Plaza España, 1), built by Pablo Monteverde after 1618; the Lorenzo house (Plaza de España, 2), with a classicist façade; the public fountain, built in 1588; the church and bell tower of El Salvador (Plaza de España, 3), whose construction dates from the early 16th century; the Massieu house (Plaza de España, 4), with an 18th-century façade, the Pereyra house (Plaza de España, 5), built in its current state by Miguel Pereyra Pérez in 1864; and the Town Hall. The center of the square is dominated by the Monument to Father Manuel Díaz Palmeras, a key figure in politics, education, culture and charity in La Palma during the first half of the 19th century.

2. Church of El Salvador

Founded around 1500, the parish of El Salvador is situated in Plaza de Espana and it’s one of the top places to see when visiting Santa Cruz de La Palma. The church of El Salvador has many interesting architectural features, like stonework from La Gomera, as well as gothic elements.

3. The balconies of Avenida Maritima

Walk aimlessly and admire the architecture – it’s our best advice when it comes to visiting Santa Cruz de La Palma

These typical wooden Canarian balconies are the main thing that you see in photos depicting Santa Cruz de La Palma. These balconies on Avenida Maritima in the capital of La Palma are the best-preserved wooden balconies in the Canary Islands. You can also admire the so-called double balconies of Lusitanian influence, reminiscent of Portuguese architecture. I

4. Naval Museum of Santa Cruz de La Palma – Ship of the Virgin

The ship houses inside the Naval Museum of Santa Cruz de La Palma made up of materials of various kinds that portray local maritime life. For the construction of the ship, its promoters – descendants of sailors, shipbuilders and collectors of maritime objects – took as a reference the Nao Santa María, aboard which Columbus starred in the discovery of America.

5. Insular Museum of Fine Arts, Natural Sciences and Ethnography

The house where the museum is located used to belong to the Convent of San Francisco de Santa Cruz de La Palma and today it is home to the General Archive of La Palma, the Insular Library and the Insular Museum of Fine Arts, Natural Sciences and Ethnography.

The Fine Arts section exhibits a collection donated for this purpose by Senator Pedro Poggio Álvarez, a fan of painting and the first general director of Fine Arts. Arts of Spain. It also has other funds acquired by the Island Council, highlighting, among the local authors, the realist Manuel González Méndez, trained in Madrid and Paris, the academic painter Gregorio Toledo and the avant-garde Carmen Arozena (to whose name the island institution has dedicated an international printmaking prize) and, among foreigners, the Berlin expressionist Bruno Brandt.

The Ethnography section contains pieces related to housing, agriculture, gastronomy or artisan textile production. The Natural Sciences part of the museum originally made up of the Natural History Museum of the Royal Cosmological Society has been enriched with new minerals and zoological exhibits.

6. Contemporary Art Museum

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Santa Cruz de La Palma is located on the site of the house built around 1616 by Captain Juan Vandewalle de Aguiar. After being affected by a fire in the twentieth century, the building was demolished, the house was acquired by the Santa Cruz de La Palma City Council and it was turned into a museum.

The building houses on its upper floor the Interpretation Center of the Bajada de la Virgen, which proposes a sensory journey through the most emblematic festival of La Palma.

7. Casa principial de Salazar

Known under the name of Casa Principal de Salazar, this is the most important home that the Salazar family, originally from the Burgos valley, would come to own on La Palma is known.

Nowadays, the Main House of Salazar is owned by the Cabildo Insular de La Palma, which has rehabilitated the property and has converted it into a cultural center.

8. La Alameda kiosk

The Alameda kiosk is the center of attention of La Alameda square, which is a place dedicated to public recreation and leisure. Located next to the Naval Museum, this typical kiosk is the perfect place to stop for churros and chocolate for an authentic Canary Islands experience.

9. Real Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves

The Plaza de Las Nieves is a charming place in Santa Cruz de La Palma, paved with pebbles and featuring a stone fountain. If you’ve climbed all the way here on foot you can stay and rest under the shadow of the jacarandas, the magnolias and the araucarias.

The Royal Sanctuary of Our Lady of Las Nieves is a place that you absolutely must visit when in Santa Cruz de La Palma, first of all for the architecture and treasures it hides inside, and then for the moments of tranquility that you will get to enjoy in the plaza in front of the church.

10. Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma

Enjoy a day at the local beach after a few days sightseeing around the best places to visit in Santa Cruz de La Palma

The capital of La Palma has a city beach, with black volcanic sand, located close to the port and with lifeguards on site. It has facilities like showers and changing rooms.

Be careful when going for a swim here on the beach in Santa Cruz de La Palma because the currents are strong and sometimes the waves are big as well, so it’s not exactly the best beach for swimming or snorkelling.

Overview

Pico de la Cruz from the north

Of the many summits on the crest of Caldera de Taburiente, there are some, which appear to be more important than others. Roque de los Muchachos, the highest mountain on La Palma, naturally takes the first place in any listing. Roque Palmero in the west of the caldera and Pico de la Nieve in the south come to mind as cornerstones. All these mountains have one thing in common: their summit blocks are big and they stand out from the caldera and its crest. And among these mountains, Pico de la Cruz takes a special place.

Here we are talking about a mountain with three summits, the central one of which reaches 2351m and thus is the third highest summit on the island. It is located in a place on the crest, basically the north-eastern end, where it is visible from all the important lookout spots on La Palma. From the opening of Caldera de Taburiente, from Puerto de Tazarcorte on the western coast, you can look through the narrow Barranco de Angustias and what do you see? Pico de la Cruz. You go to Ermita Virgen del Pino or the Cumbrecita saddle and what is right opposite? Pico de la Cruz. As you climb the long Cumbre Nueva Ridge towards Punta de los Roques, what hovers right above the Punta? You guessed it, Pico de la Cruz.

For the trekkers, who hike Ruta de la Cresteria, sometimes together with Ruta de los Volcanes, Pico de la Cruz is an important landmark: here, in the nooks and crevices around the basalt summit block you can pitch a tent and shiver through the cold Palmeran mountain night during the multiday treck.

Pico de la Cruz, however,, is also popular among the hikers and regular tourists on the island. Its summit is located a 15 minute hike from two parking lots on LP-4, La Palma’s mountain road, which runs from Santa Cruz de La Palma to San Domingo de Garafia in the north-west of the island. Every guidebook will recommend the drive and during mid-day you can witness small traffic jams near Degollada de Franceses, 2km to the north-west of the mountain, where the tourists, in order to snap a shot are known to park their car in the middle of the road.

Pico de la Cruz is set aside from this place and there are two parking spaces on either side of the summit. Anyone who wants to see a bit more than just one glimpse down into the Caldera will park there and try to reach the summit. The southern approach is more difficult as it involves block scrambling across the basalt blocks which make up the summit. The northern approach, however is easy and well beaten by the many boots which walk it every day. On top of Pico de la Cruz you find a small cabin, erected as a meterological station. It is closed and thus not much use for the trekkers which intend to stay overnight.

Pico de la Cruz is a stormy peak. Usually north-eastern trade winds push the clouds across the crest through the saddles to both sides but sometimes, when western winds prevail, the air is channelled into the Caldera, where it rises and gets rid of its humidity by heavy rains. As Pico de la Cruz stands in its way it gets the most of this precipitation. However, weather is a local affair on all the Canary Islands and you can witness wonderful days on the summits nearby even though Pico de la Cruz is hidden in clouds. Usually, however, when evening falls the clouds retreat to reveal cold and starry nights.

(Close to the) summit panorama

Somehow I didn’t manage to get a real summit panorama. 360° were out of the question, thanks to the meterological station on the very top. Moreover, clouds spilled over the caldera rim, so that the only reasonable panoramas I have are from some 20 – 30m beneath the summit block.

Getting There

Pico de la Cruz from Pico de la Fuente Nueva

La Palma, like all the other Canarian Islands can easily be reached from almost all major European airports. The airport is rather small and compared to Tenerife or Gran Canaria air trafic is rather low. Only Iberia has regular flights but all year round you’ll be able to book charter flights. The airport itself is located on the eastern coast of the island, almost at its centre.

There are several trailheads which can be used to climb the mountain. All lie on LP-4, the high mountain road which connects Santa Cruz de La Palma with Garafia and which serves to support the astronomical observatories on top of the caldera. Pico de la Cruz is located directly above the road and the shortest access is from small parking lots to either side of it. More interesting trailheads are at Pico de la Nieve 5km to the southand Roque de los Muchachos, 5km to the west.

  • Follow LP-1 from the airport through the capital of Santa Cruz.
  • After the city, at El Morro, LP-4 turns off to the left (west). There are signs for the observatories at Roque de los Muchachos.
  • Follow the winding road towards Pico de la Nieve, Pico de la Cruz or Roque de los Muchachos.

Red Tape

The summit of Pic de la Cruz is part of the Parque Nacional de la Caldera de Taburiente. This means on the inside of the park boundary you are not allowed to leave the trails or to camp in the vicinity of the summit. Depending on the weather, leaving the trails can be rather dangerous. The caldera is composed of rather loose rocks and in wet or stormy conditions many a rock fall will occur.

Accommodation

The eastern Caldera de Taburiente seen from Pico de la Cruz (almost)

Accommodation is not much of a problem. Though there are no campgrounds on the island, hotel rooms and apartments (or number of beds) exceed the actual number of travellers by a ratio of 3:1. Every European travel office will be able to book hotel rooms and apartments for you. Or you can simply use google to find good offers. Often rural fincas can be much less expensive than the regular tourist offers though quality might be more of a problem.

Weather Conditions

Usually all year round the Canarias have the same weather with little alterations: north-eastern trade winds which deposit fog and dew on the north-eastern slopes of the islands. The eastern and southern parts usually are very dry and there you’ll get some hours of sunshine each day. Especially on the higher islands like La Palma you usually don’t have to worry about weather too much. The mountaintops will stick out of the clouds.

Punta de los Roques and Pico Bejenado

Now here’s the problem: We spent two vacations on La Palma in late February 2005 and late December 2009. Both times we had fierce western winds which were loaded with moisture. We had torrential rain for hours on end and several times couldn’t even drive by car because the roads were flooded. In these conditions anything can happen in the mountains!

There are no reliable weather forecasts for the mountain regions of La Palma. Often a cloudless day turns into a foggy one within half an hour. Forecasts for the coastal regions, however are available. You have to subtract 0.7°C for every 100m of altitude so that Roque de los Muchachos will still be near freezing when the coasts have already fine and sunny beach weather. The following table gives a little overview about the average weather data of the capital of Santa Cruz:

Maps & Books

  • Maps

I have used a fantastic map by Freytag & Berndt which shows all of the many hiking and biking trails of the island. With its scale of 1:30000 it is still large enough to be usefu for car tours as well. Moreover here you will find all the new designations and acronyms (which were changed some few years back).

  • Santa Cruz de La Palma

Exploring Santa Cruz de La Palma is like visiting an art gallery. As such, the capital of La Palma is nothing short of ravishing with its colorful colonial homes made even more vibrant by balconies with gorgeous and captivating flowering plants. Even its cobblestone paths complement well with its traditional architecture, radiating a mix of typical Canarian and Carribean feel.

What’s more, this second largest city of La Palma is oozing with rich maritime flavor. Its volcanic sand beach offers a serene therapeutic vibe. Meanwhile, yachts dot the marina as well as luxury cruise ships.

On the whole, strolling from the promenade to the inner streets is a sensation-filling experience. This place steeped in history treats visitors young and old to a delightful glimpse of the island’s bygone era.

    A Look into the History

Situated on the east coast of La Palma, Santa Cruz is a city with an illustrious past. It traces its history back to the 15th century when Alonso Fernández de Lugo conquered the island. From that point on, it became an important port on the route between Europe and Spain’s colonies in the Americas.

The port city reached its peak during the 16th century when it became the third most important maritime port in the continent, after Seville and Antwerp. With a flourishing export hub, it attracted a large number of merchants and bankers, thus the mansions by the promenade. All these and more contributed to the fact that Santa Cruz is, today, one of the best cities to visit in the Canary Islands.

Things to Do in Santa Cruz de La Palma

The city and municipality’s glorious past still lingers in the air. Travel back in time and get lost in Renaissance era churches, remarkable museums, and Flemish art pieces. Wander along its twisting back streets and admire the unique set of rustic balconies that are sure to brighten up a gloomy day.

    Avenida Maritima

Avenida Maritima is the bonbon of Santa Cruz de La Palma. Stroll down the cobblestone streets and take in the riot of colors from brightly-painted houses. Soak in the wooden balconies adorned with a variety of blooming plants – which makes for a truly delightful sight. These nicely-preserved colonial homes are not open to visitors except for some that its owners transformed to charming little restaurants and shops.

Continue further south to the promenade. Here, visitors can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and stop at the Castle of Santa Catalina. This military fortification helped defended the city from the pirates and corsairs in the 16th and 17th centuries.

    Camino Real

Camino Real is more than just the city’s main highway. Mostly cobbled, it is where the main shops, squares, and interesting buildings are. Wandering from north to south, it is not hard to gain an insight into the capital’s history and culture. After all, almost every structure on this street stands a testament to the centuries-old tradition of the Canary Islands.

    Calle O’Daly

The quaint cafes, jewelry shops, and souvenir stores are what makes Calle O’Daly stand out from the rest of the city. This road, dubbed as the shopping street of Santa Cruz, is the perfect place to take back a little something of the island back home. It is also worth noting that the famous designer Manolo Blahnik hails from this city, so shoe-lovers are in for a treat. Overall, the immaculate cobblestone pedestrian street is perfect for a stroll anytime of the day.

    Plaza España

Sitting on the north of Calle O’Daly is the palm-shaded Plaza España. The square, regarded as one of the most remarkable Renaissance architecture in the archipelago, also serves as the nerve center of the city. It houses some of the most prominent buildings including the impressive 16th-century Town Hall. On the other side are the historic Church of El Salvador and a beautiful bronze statue of Manuel Diaz in the middle.

Insular Museum of La Palma (Museo Insular)

Step back in time at Museo Insular, an excellent museum housed in a former 16th-century monastery. Wandering around, visitors will find a diverse range of exhibits from Guanche skulls to impressive shell and coral collection. The museum also holds galleries of 20th-century paintings and contemporary art.

    The Naval Museum (Museo Naval)

When in Santa Cruz, it is hard to miss the full-size ship that looks stranded. But this ship, a replica of Christopher Columbus’ Santa Maria, is the Naval Museum. It features a permanent exhibition of ancient maps and sailing knots. Also, the museum retells interesting stories revolving around the sugar industry on the island during the Spanish conquerors’ time.

Santuario de la Virgen de Las Nieves

Take an easy hike north of the city to see La Palma’s primary object of pilgrimage. Santuario de la Vigen de Las Nieves boasts fabulous baroque interiors. It’s Mudejar-carved ceiling, crystal chandeliers, and eye-catching sculptures are the precursor to the Virgin Mary herself. This 14th-century figure is the oldest religious statue in the Canary Islands. Sitting peacefully on an elevated spot surrounded by greenery, the area also offers splendid views over Santa Cruz.

Getting to and Around Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz de La Palma, on the eastern side of the island, is accessible by ferries. From the main port, several ships sail to other islands in the Canaries.

Meanwhile, those who are not comfortable with traveling through the waters may take the convenient inter-island plane. The airport in Villa Mazo is only 6 kilometers from Santa Cruz. From here, travelers can hire cars and take LP-5, LP-2 and LP-20 motorways. Otherwise, they may take the efficient public bus. Route 500 takes passengers from Punto Limpio to La Recova bus station in less than 30 minutes.

Guide to Santa Cruz de La Palma

Santa Cruz de la Palma (Spanish for “Holy Cross”) is located in the eastern part of the island of La Palma in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in the Canary Islands (Spain).
The city was founded by Alonso Fernandez de Lugo on May 3, 1493 years. The city originally served as a port, connecting routes in North and South America, exporting goods such as sugar cane. The city was sacked by pirates and was later rebuilt and fortified against future pirate attacks.
This splendid past has left in the historic quarter of Santa Cruz de La Palma a valuable heritage of palaces, colonial buildings and houses with typical elements of traditional Canarian architecture, such as wooden balconies.

Santa Cruz de la Palma is a small town in Spain, located on the island of La Palma and is the capital of the island. La Palma is the greenest and most picturesque of the Canary Islands. The Canary Islands are, of course, eternal summer, unsurpassed natural conditions, magical and affordable holidays. There is no industry on the island, and life here proceeds measuredly and calmly, which is immediately transmitted to visiting tourists.

Once the town of Santa Cruz de La Palma was a major port and served as a transit point between America and Europe. Nowadays, this small town with many old buildings and narrow streets welcomes tourists from all over the world. Dali Street and Salazar Palace, the 16th century old town hall of Ayantamiento and Plaza de España, the Church of the Holy Light and the House of Tobacco are interesting places in the city that are definitely worth a visit.

Places such as Plaza de España , attract a large number of tourists. On this small triangular square in the city center is Church of the Savior with a high bell tower, built in 1503. On the other side of the square stands City Hall with an arcade in the style of the Italian Renaissance. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, a fortress has been preserved that protected the city from pirates. An amazing life-size model of Columbus’ ship Santa Maria is used as Maritime Museum .

Fans of outdoor activities can walk along incredibly beautiful routes on foot, where you will meet trees and ferns, which can rightfully be considered real living fossils.

    PROMOTIONS AND ADVICE FROM OLESIA!

Santa Cruz de La Palma cruise port / Santa Cruz La Palma

In terms of port infrastructure, Santa Cruz de La Palma is 100% deja vu with the port of the same name on the island of Tenerife. It turns out that both ports with the same name (except for the last word) are operated by the same office. The same concrete wall-pier, protecting the passenger long pier from the waves. Only here on the wall is additionally depicted the relief of the island of La Palma, reminiscent of a heart. The same blue and green lines on the pavement leading from the city to the ferry and cruise piers. Same ferry lines and flight schedules between the two islands.

The town itself is small, so cruisers usually leave it for later after returning from long-distance excursions around the island. Free shuttle buses run in the port, which will “throw” cruisers to the city center. In the morning, a sightseeing train for those cruisers who decided to just explore the port capital and its suburbs arrives at the pier, closer to the liner.

Also on the pier there is a stand of official licensed taxis that offer trips around the island to all the viewing platforms that you yourself indicate on the map.

Preparing to visit La Palma, I faced the problem of finding a Russian-speaking guide on the island. Sometimes it seemed easier to find a Russian-speaking guide on the African island of Madagascar than on the Canarian La Palma.

He asked for help in organizing a sightseeing tour of La Palma for us with an ascent to the highest point of the Taburiente volcano, Elena Orlova, who lives on the island and her name flashed in search engines. But not as a guide.

Unexpectedly, she agreed to help us personally! One could only dream of such a creative person (singer, assistant director, “collective farmer” growing organic flower teas) and just a charming woman in love with the island of La Palma to show us the island of La Palma.

This is how, on the morning of April 9, when we got off the ship, we could personally pay our respects to Elena Orlova. She was already waiting for us with a rented Nissan minibus and a licensed driver from autosislaverde.

Our main goal on the island of La Palma was to climb the Taburiente volcano. The top point of the crater is called Roque De Los Muchachos. It is located in the center of the island at an altitude of 2426 meters. A huge crater with a diameter of 8 kilometers and a perimeter of almost 30 kilometers is clearly visible on the satellite map.

There is a trace of a tongue of lava flowing down the left (west) side. Now in this place on the ocean coast is the fishing village of Tazacorte (Tazacorte). In general, all this is now called the national park “La Caldera de Taburiente”.

So we started our trip to the top of Roque De Los Muchachos. The 30-kilometer crater itself is visible only from space
and only the imagination can draw a picture of driving a car along the crater and all the cliffs, this is just a small part of the volcano’s mouth. Mountain serpentines are very, very winding. Stops periodically to photograph general views.

In the Church of Santuario De Nuestra Senora De Las Nieves, you don’t have to light a candle yourself. The coin is lowered and the electric candle automatically lights up.

So that tourists do not spontaneously arrange impromptu parking and do not interfere with traffic, civilized viewing platforms-miradors are organized. A sort of “parking pockets” on the highway, where you can park for a while, go out to enjoy and take pictures.

Therefore, conventionally, a trip to natural attractions on each Canary island can be called a trip to miradors: from one mirador to another mirador. So, Mirador De Los Andenes became the first official observation deck when climbing to the top of the Taburiente volcano.

The famous astronomical observatory on the island is considered #1 in the world. It is located at an altitude of more than 2000 meters above sea level. Clouds are almost always lower, blocking and absorbing the light of electric lamps coming from below from settlements.

Therefore, this observatory has the most ideal natural conditions for observing the night sky, distant planets and dangerous asteroids. The observatory complex consists of several huge mirror antennas and spherical telescopes.
Astronomers sign up here a year in advance.

And now, after a couple of hours of unrestrained and hysterical roar of the engine of our minivan, overcoming one steep mountain serpentine after another, we have reached the top point of our excursion. Viewpoint Roque De Los Muchachos at an altitude of 2426 meters.
On the one hand – the appearance of the ocean, sky and observatory. On the other hand, an internal view of a 700-meter-deep gorge in the center of the alleged crater.

Views of the inner gorges and cliffs are also interesting because of the clouds that live their own lives. Crawling on the mountain peaks inside the caldera, they flow down the slopes of the crater.

The observation deck is not the highest point here. To get to the real Roque De Los Muchachos, you still have to walk a few hundred meters along special paths.

The sun is mercilessly hot at the top, so you should definitely cover yourself with sunscreen. And the wind there is hurricane – it blows away specifically.

Our next destination is the fish restaurant and the beach in Tazacorta. On the way, another Mirador – Barranco De Garome.

Then Mirador De El Time. Located at an altitude of 534 meters above sea level directly above the Aridane Valley, Los Llanos and Tazacorte beach. This is the most cultivated observation deck. There is a monument to the local figure Don Candido Eloy Garcia Brito, a restaurant with a panoramic view, a spyglass, etc.

We descended from the observation deck several kilometers along a mountain serpentine, passed the town of Las Lianos and here we are at our second goal. Tazacorte beach is one of the best beaches on La Palma. As the island itself is not as overcrowded with tourists, the beaches are not as crowded as compared to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The sand is black, volcanic. The water was invigorating, you can’t swim in it for a long time.

Playa Mont is located on the Tazacorte promenade and specializes in seafood. The restaurant is decorated in a cruise marine theme: a lifebuoy, a bell – a ship’s bell and, of course, fish delicacies on the table.

The choice of the fish menu was so varied and Elena Orlova patiently explained to us the essence of the ingredients of each dish, that in the end we decided to take the entire menu for one tasting portion, and then ask for additional dishes we liked. In addition to fish delicacies, for the Palmer (and Canarian) table, goat cheese (especially fried) and grilled jacket potatoes prepared in a special way are obligatory. Beer drank local brand “Dorada”.

The taste of fish dishes cannot be expressed in words. Forgive me the chef of the perfect cruise cuisine “AIDAsol”, fresh seafood is always better than frozen.

Palmer cuisine is a special treat. Fish of all stripes, shrimp, cuttlefish, squid, specially cut and cooked either in batter, or breaded, or deep-fried, or in a bag of dough, or in some kind of sprinkling. In general, I have never seen or tried such a flight of fancy as it is prettier and tastier to make fish stuffing. Plus sauces: green, red from local herbs and olive oil, etc.

And for dessert – a three-layer barakito coffee with foam and condensed milk. Canarian condensed milk is no worse than Rogachev’s. Eh, we didn’t have time to buy a couple of jars in the store, take it with us

After an exotic fish lunch, it’s time to set off on the way back, but not through Taburiente, but in a different way – through the REFUGIO DE EL PILAR nature reserve and the tunnel, so that along the way you can see a few more iconic places for the island of La Palma.

In the town of El Roso there is a small church Pino de La Virgen, built on donations from patrons. There, icons with biblical scenes hang on the walls, made in volume with a 3D plasticine effect. The courtyard and the area around the church are in themselves also an observation deck – a mirador.

We drove up, or rather, returned from the other side to the port town and the observation deck – Mirador de La Conception.

The central part of the island’s capital is typical of any seaside towns. Embankment-promenade, side narrow streets, souvenir shops, city hall and central square.

Answering the question “Why is the local wine, malvasia, so expensive?” the granny saleswoman proudly replied, “Vary Special!” Very special.

The time of the tour flew by quickly. Of course, only one day tour of Caldera de Taburiente is not enough to fully explore the island. La Palma is waiting for the return of tourists for at least a few days in order to systematically visit all the miradors and volcanoes (and this is not only Taburiente, but also several smaller brothers).

It’s time to get all aboard. With gratitude, we take the final joint photo with Elena and the driver, who have become hospitable guides for us around their island! See you soon!

We will definitely return to green La Palma!

    History

Royal sanctuary of Notre Dame de Neige, patron saint of La Palma.

Santa Cruz de La Palma was founded at by Alonso Fernández de Lugo. Then it was located on the banks of the river, near a cave called Tedote (today Cueva de Carias, north of the city). Named Villa del Apurón, the city was a port on the sea route to the Americas and exported products from the island such as sugarcane. Santa Cruz de La Palma was attacked and destroyed by pirates. It was rebuilt and fortified to protect it from future attacks. Among the most famous fortifications – Castillo de Santa Catalina and Castillo de la Virgen .

During the rise of fascism in Spain and the civil war in 1936, Santa Cruz de La Palma resisted and remained loyal to the Republicans until the arrival of the Gunners Canalejas le. .

During the transition to democracy in 1975 and free elections in 1979, the city was one of the first to elect a communist mayor from the CPE.

The municipality hosts the Royal Sanctuary of Notre-Dame-des-Nèges, the patron saint of La Palma. Every 5 years Bajada de la Virgen is celebrated in her sanctuary in the highlands in the city center. Every year on August 5, the feast of the Snow Virgin is celebrated.
