25 of the Most Wheelchair Accessible Beaches in the World

There is a broad range of wheelchair accessible beaches throughout the world, from a variety within the United States to internationally in some of the most popular vacation destinations. Finding a beautiful beach to visit is fairly easy depending on where you’d like to travel, but finding information about the accessibility can be difficult.

Many beaches offer boardwalks, ramps, and assistive equipment to help wheelchair users enjoy the sand and shore. These top 25 beaches are some of the most wheelchair accessible beaches in the world and are perfect for a vacation destination because of their wheelchair accessibility.

Wheelchair Accessible Beaches in the United States

There are several amazing beaches along the coasts of the United States, and many of these beaches are wheelchair accessible, offering a destination that everyone can enjoy. The main accessibility features of these beaches include wider paved paths and handicap parking, while some may have accessibility equipment, ramps, and boardwalks.

1: Santa Monica and Venice Beach in California

Located on the west coast of the United States, California boasts one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. Many people are familiar with hot spots such as Santa Monica and Malibu. Those offer boardwalks and ramps, but are crowded much of the time due to their popularity as a travel destination for surfing, sunny weather and the beach life. Another thing that Santa Monica offers is a very eclectic mix of people. I’ve even had Cheetos thrown at me by a homeless man on the Santa Monica Pier before. No lie.

Santa Monica and Venice Beach are very popular tourist destinations in California, and they also happen to be very wheelchair accessible. While they do get very crowded, Santa Monica offers an accessible beach map as well as all-terrain wheelchairs. Venice Beach offers beach wheelchairs as well, usually near the lifeguard towers. The best way to visit these beaches is to call ahead to reserve a wheelchair or arrive early in the morning. Most Southern California beaches are beautiful in the morning hours and can be less crowded at this time.

2: Rehab Point in Oxnard, California

Rehab Point

Rehab Point in Oxnard features a paved path that is approximately 900 feet long. The path winds around sand dunes, offering great views of the ocean along the way, and you shouldn’t have a lap full of Cheetos afterwards either. The Rehab Point Project was completely designed with wheelchair users in mind, so everyone can visit the ocean. The concrete paths offer plenty of space to enjoy the area.

3: Virginia Beach in Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach

Located on the other side of the country, the east coast state of Virginia boasts some of the most picturesque beaches to be seen. Virginia Beach, in particular, is quite popular as a tourist destination and one of the best wheelchair accessible beaches. Boardwalks span much of the terrain, making travel easy and convenient. There are a few levels on the parking deck that offer direct access to the boardwalk so be sure to look for those when you go.

Several Virginia beaches also offer beach wheelchair rentals, but be sure to call ahead to reserve them. Virginia Beach does still offer free use of beach wheelchairs that were used in their pilot program a few years ago. They only have two though, so make sure to reserve them in advance.

Beach wheelchairs can be borrowed for free at several spots along the boardwalk. These wheelchairs are offered on a first come, first serve basis. The three beach access points with free beach wheelchair rentals are 2nd Street, 17th Street, and 24th Street. These beaches also have handicap restrooms. Several other beach access points have ramps and extended wooden walkways to enjoy the beach without a beach wheelchair.

4: Hanauma Bay in Honolulu, Hawaii

Hanauma Bay

This beach is located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. Hanauma Bay is a state park that was restored to its “curved bay” in 1990, creating a bountiful marine ecosystem in the area. This is a very popular snorkeling destination which is what led to its deterioration. Now the site is available to enjoy once again, with a heavy emphasis on conservation and protecting the land.

As a popular site, the beach is closed every Tuesday to allow the fish to naturally feed. The visitor population is also closely monitored and regulated to keep the beach in good condition.

They offer free use of its specially equipped beach wheelchairs for users with special needs. Wet or dry sand is easy to navigate with these special chairs. All-terrain wheelchairs are available at select beaches throughout the Hawaiian islands. The best way to rent or borrow an all-terrain wheelchair is to contact the ADA coordinator for the specific county.

5: Lydgate Beach Park in Kauai, Hawaii

The beaches on other Hawaiian islands also offer all-terrain wheelchairs, including select beaches on Kauai. For those looking for a more local beach experience, try Lydgate Beach Park on Kauai. The beach is a smaller, rock enclosed pond which keeps the waves small, creating a reef pond. This is a good place for a calmer ocean experience.

The park itself has concrete walking paths with amazing views of the open ocean. The pond offers calm waters from swimming, wading, or sitting, and with an all-terrain wheelchair, you can explore the whole area. This park also has restrooms, showers, and picnic space for a fun, relaxing day at the beach. Without an all-terrain wheelchair, you can still explore most of the park, enjoy the view, and picnic. To rent or borrow an all-terrain wheelchair, contact the County’s ADA coordinator.

.

6: Kure Beach in Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington is a great place to explore not only the city, but also the parks and beaches. Wilmington itself has two wheelchair accessible parks with unique playground equipment or athletic fields. Hugh MacRae Park is a very popular park and has accessible playground equipment including a Liberty Wheelchair Swing. This swing is designed to support wheelchairs and the keys can be borrowed at the Parks & Gardens office.

Olsen Park is home to The Miracle Field, which is a special rubberize turf that allows those with mobility limitations to play a variety of sports. This field also gives wheelchair users space to navigate freely. This park is also where Miracle Playground is located, another accessible playground with unique equipment.

Wilmington has several island beaches, including Kure Beach, which offers free beach wheelchair rentals through the local fire department. These wheelchairs can be rented for a week at a time. Kure Beach has three wheelchair ramps for beach access, making it the perfect beach to visit for accessibility.

Carolina Beach has three WaterWheel beach wheelchairs that are free to the public. These beach wheelchairs are different from standard beach wheelchairs and allow the user to sit lower to the ground. These chairs are made of stainless steel and are often used to feel the ocean and even transfer to a surfboard.

.

7: Myrtle Beach in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

There are three different beaches in Myrtle Beach that offer beach wheelchairs for accessibility. The entire area of Myrtle Beach prioritizes accessibility, wanting all visitors and residents to be able to enjoy the area.

All beach wheelchairs are available for free, with multiple beach access points at the Grand Stand. The beach wheelchairs are available on a first come, first serve basis but can also be reserved. With a reservation, this ensures that your beach wheelchair will be delivered to your location, if the weather cooperates. Beach wheelchairs are only available until 5pm, but can be delivered as early as 9am.

Myrtle Beach has 31 wheelchair accessible beach access points. Several offer beach ramps, while others are completely accessible. There is a resource to help navigate the access points at Myrtle Beach as well as at North Myrtle Beach and Surfside Beach.

.

8: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo, Florida

The beach is accessible via ramps and wooden walkways. However, one of the strong appeals to this area for disabled travelers is the ability to go snorkeling and diving. A few local companies specialize in outfitting wheelchair users for underwater experiences and even have beach friendly wheelchairs for sale or rent. Boats feature lifts for easy transfer on and off, making this a great, safe way to explore the underwater sea life.

One option for water adventures in Key Largo is Tranquil Adventures, which is a fishing vessel that is specifically equipped for wheelchairs. There is a lift to lower disabled passengers into the water for shallow water snorkeling and swimming. On board are also wheelchair accessible bathrooms, which is something many other excursions and boats don’t offer. Many state and marine parks through the Florida Keys are wheelchair accessible including John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.

.

9: Gulf Shores Beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama

Gulf Shores in Alabama is another great wheelchair accessible beach destination because of the city’s priority to make their beaches more wheelchair friendly. The city has recently added a 20 foot wide concrete promenade along with access mats on the beach.

Access mats are on both the east and west ends of the beach, giving wheelchair users an opportunity to enter the sand without a beach wheelchair. The access mats stop short of the water to avoid the natural slope and give wheelchair users space to get closer to the ocean.

There are also beach wheelchairs available at the Beach Safety office at Gulf Place Public Beach. These are available on a first come, first serve basis. Both Beach Safety Officers and Lifeguards can provide assistance with accessibility while visiting the beach.

.

10: Tybee Island Beach in Tybee Island, Georgia

The beaches at Tybee Island are designed for everyone to enjoy, no matter their accessibility requirements. There are both ramps and Mobimats, or mobility mats, to allow wheelchairs access to the sand.

In addition to the paths and Mobimats, Tybee Island offers beach wheelchairs for free rental depending on their availability. Wheelchairs can be found at the lifeguard station near Tybee Island Marine Science Center. Wheelchair availability can be confirmed if you call ahead before your trip to the beach. This will give you an opportunity to reserve a wheelchair for your visit. It’s clear that Tybee Island is working diligently to ensure their beachfront is wheelchair accessible, which makes this a great beachy destination.

.

11: Stearns Park Beach in Ludington, Michigan

Stearns Beach in Ludington is one of the most popular beaches in Michigan, making it a great tourist destination as well as a wheelchair accessible beach. Knowing how popular this beach is, the city worked with Disability Connections of West Michigan to make Stearns Beach more accessible for all.

The first step was installing accessible walkways at the beach. These walkways stretch from the North Concessions Stand to 300 yards down the beach to the water. There’s another south walkway that extends from the concrete to the pier and down to the beach. A third walkway runs down the middle of the beach, giving plenty of access through the sand as a way to visit the water and enjoy the view.

These walkways are just the beginning of adapting the most popular beach in Michigan to be accessible. This is a great start and gives many the opportunity to enjoy the beachfront, water, and natural landscape.

.

12: South Padre Island beaches in South Padre Island, Texas

The beaches on South Padre Island are a destination, people from all over the world visit and so there are many accessibility elements in place so everyone can enjoy the space. There are a total of 18 beach access points with Mobimats for easy access and 4 of these access points are completely wheelchair accessible. Many of the access points use wide wooden ramps to allow walk-over or wheelchair access over the sand to get closer to the shoreline.

The beaches also have several Mobi-Chair units, that is amphibious wheelchairs for accessing both the sandy beach as well as the water. Half of the beach accesses use Mobimats and the addition of Mobi-Chairs allows South Padre Island to offer wheelchair accessibility to all. To reserve or rent a Mobi-Chair, contact the South Padre Island Fire Department.

With these accessibility modifications, South Padre Island is known as one of the most wheelchair accessible beach destinations in all of Texas. The use of ramps, walkways, Mobimats, and the availability of Mobi-Chairs gives wheelchair users an opportunity to explore the beach, get closer to the water, and even splash in the shallows.

.

13: Santa Barbara, California

Another great destination for relaxed beaches is Santa Barbara. The wide stretch of beachfront is lined with paved paths and several stops for snacks, dining, and relaxing. There are a few ramps leading into the sand as well as covered pavilions and beachside restrooms. Depending on where you visit, the beach may have accessible equipment, but mainly this public beach is available like a public park. There’s several parking lots and large walkways.

Beyond the beach there’s a quaint town with State Street for dining, shopping, and exploring as well as Stearns Wharf for a great view of the ocean. The Wharf also offers unique dining and shopping, perfect for a day at the beach and exploring the city. The farther you get into the downtown, the less wheelchair friendly the sidewalks are, but most of the paths along the beach are wide enough to accommodate the foot traffic and gives everyone space to enjoy the view.

.

International

If traveling abroad is more your style, there are some amazing wheelchair accessible beaches around the globe. The following were chosen because they not only offer solid accessibility but also are beautiful destinations to enjoy sight-seeing, food and dining, tours, and views.

.

14: A-One Pattaya Beach Resort, Thailand

Pattaya Beach

One of the more popular tourist destinations for globetrotters (and my number one dream destination!), A-One Pattaya offers luxury and quality at every turn. This beach resort was designed specifically with wheelchair users in mind.

The hotel itself has a variety of wheelchair accessibility from the ramp in the car park to the seated desks for check in and a lowered elevator panel for easy access and visibility. The entire property is connected by ramps that stretch out over the water connecting the massive property.

All of the rooms are accessible and the beach offers ramp and boardwalk access. This is one of the few resorts in Thailand that has disabled travelers in mind. All these wheelchair accessible elements make this resort a great international destination for enjoying the beach and the weather.

.

15: Nassau Beach in New Providence, Bahamas

The Bahamas is a popular cruise destination, which can be a great wheelchair accessible vacation. Choosing to cruise to the Bahamas is often a more accessible option, as the cruise line port is very wheelchair friendly compared to navigating your own transportation to Nassau. The port offers a smooth transition from the ship to land and as a destination there are many wheelchair accessible activities along with wheelchair accessible van transportation. Be sure to book your transportation in advance, maybe even months in advance to get your shuttle to the beach.

The beaches in Nassau are more wheelchair accessible than other cruise ship port beaches. These have wooden boardwalks to allow wheelchair users access to the space and to get closer to the water. The boardwalk extends into the water, allowing wheelchair users to roll into the water. Beach wheelchairs are also available to explore the sand as well as the shore. There’s even beach excursions like swimming with dolphins that are wheelchair accessible, depending on your ability.

.

16: Sirens Resort, Loutraki, Greece

Sirens Resort

Sirens offers one of the best wheelchair travel experiences in the world. This Mediterranean resort in Loutraki, Greece is equipped with wheelchair accessible rooms throughout as well as showers that offer roll in access. The property features nice wide walkways that make navigation easy. It also has the distinction of being one of the only resorts in the world that offers direct access to the ocean. A ramp extends into the sea. Yes, it really is as epic as it sounds! You can roll right into the ocean for a total immersion experience, but I recommend not doing so in a powered chair unless you want a bit of a shock.

The beach is a resort style beach with plenty of wheelchair accessible accommodations. The highlight is the sea-access ramp which is wide enough to allow manual sea-wheelchairs entry directly into the sea. A sea-wheelchair is provided to each guest at no rental fee or extra cost, allowing all visitors to experience the wonders of the Greek Sea. The beach is fully accessible including sun umbrellas and lounge chairs as well as covered cabanas. The paved paths through the garden make it easy to explore the entire resort and truly get to experience all the wonders of the beach.

.

17: Sandals Beach Resort in Negril, Jamaica

For a wheelchair accessible all inclusive resort experience along 7 miles of white sandy beaches, consider Sandals Beach Resort in Negril, Jamaica. This resort has 6 completely wheelchair accessible rooms, which range in their specific accessibility. Some include ramps, level room entrances, and wider doors to accommodate wheelchairs. The bathrooms are also accessible with lower sinks, grab bars, and roll-in showers. The restaurants are all wheelchair accessible which makes it easy to choose your favorites and dine in luxury.

The 7 miles of beach runs parallel to the resort and some rooms even have beach access directly from their door. There is 1 beach wheelchair available upon request, along with several manual wheelchairs. Many guests rent or bring their own motorized scooter for enjoying the grounds. This resort is mainly flat, which makes it easy for wheelchair users to explore and enjoy the space. The beach is wheelchair accessible and accessibility equipment can be requested such as ramps for patios and bathroom benches.

.

18: Freedom Shores, Isla Aguada, Mexico

Freedom Shores

A war veteran who became quadriplegic after a diving accident created this resort property and the entire development was crafted with wheelchair users in mind, making it the place to go if you’re looking for a tropical Mexican getaway. Beach access at this 4 star resort is made possible via a large promenade designed specifically so disabled travelers could enjoy the beach. Many other perks such as roll-in showers exist and local taxis were made to transport wheelchair users back and forth on the property. You can even enjoy an accessible and relaxing boat ride in the waters if you wish.

This is a great accessible beach destination because the beach is one of the best in the area. It’s not only a place to enjoy the sand and water with the use of a free beach wheelchair, it’s also the place most people enjoy the sunrise, sunset, drinks by the water, and even full meals. If you’re looking for a destination where you can enjoy the beach all day everyday, this is a great place.

.

19: Cancun, Mexico

In addition to offering some of the most stunning scenery on the planet, Cancun is one of the most wheelchair accessible beach destinations. Plenty of boardwalks are located along the beach and resorts in Cancun, Mexico offer wide paths (enough space for you and the countless iguanas that are plentiful in Mexico) and private beach access as well. Umbrellas can even be rented for a small fee if you want to spend the day on the sand without roasting like a lobster. Staying at a resort is the best way to have private access to a less crowded beach.

Many resorts offer beach wheelchairs and some can even be reserved ahead of time through companies like Accessible Cancun. In addition to the beach wheelchairs, resorts are more likely to have wheelchair accommodations from wheelchair friendly dining to handicap accessible rooms, and even a lift for using the pool.

.

20: Manly Beach, Australia

Manly Beach

A short ferry ride from the mainland will land you at Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia. Very accessible with a plethora of cafes, restaurants, and shops, there is plenty to see and do beyond just spending time on the beach itself. Be sure to eat some pizza at Hugo’s if you visit. I ate it back in 2014 and am still thinking about it… Delicious!! However, if lounging seaside is on the agenda then there is a nice walkway between Manly and Shelley Beach with beach wheelchairs available if you desire.

The beach itself is accessible to wheelchairs by a pedestrian boardwalk that leads to Shelley Beach. This is a great way to explore the local wildlife and there are plenty of places to stop, grab a snack, and take a break while enjoying the sights. The ferry along with the beach is a great way to spend a day and gives you that perfect day at the beach.

.

21: Tobacco Bay in Bermuda

There are plenty of beaches to visit in Bermuda, but Tobacco Bay is a shallow, crystal clear bay with reef which makes it perfect for snorkeling and enjoying the calm waters. This beach is on the small side compared to resort beaches which are typically long stretches of sand.

Visiting Tobacco Bay is a great few hours at the beach, but Bermuda takes it a step further with a wheelchair accessible island tour. This air-conditioned bus tour allows you to see all the sights, make stops at historic land and enjoy the beach. These tours can also be customized to your liking, making it easier to visit the beaches you’d like to see and make sure you get a chance to see all destinations during your stay.  Visiting Bermuda can be completely wheelchair accessible with the right resources, and there are plenty of options from transportation to beach destinations.

.

22: Tuscany, Italy

Tuscany

This great Italian region has several wheelchair accessible beaches. Ramps and boardwalks are abound in this tourist Mecca with the top four most accessible beaches in Tuscany being Alcione Beach, Bagno Auroria, Fossa Maestra, and Stella del Mare. A few of them offer showers and changing rooms. Many of the resorts in Tuscany offer accessible rooms as well. Make sure you call ahead to check availability or you might get booked in a regular room even if you requested an accessible room online.

Finding a specific beach in Tuscany can be a little tricky, as many public beaches are considered free beaches and may be little spots along the coast. The best way to find a wheelchair accessible beach and accommodations is to consider a resort because these establishments often have their own beach access, or know the best way to go about accessing a local beach.

.

23: Nova Icaria in Barcelona, Spain

The beach in Barcelona is very wheelchair accessible with several access points. Each access point uses a ramp to merge the city sidewalk with a beach boardwalk, allowing you to move through the sand easily. The wooden ramps go all the way to the water on some paths, making it very easy to enjoy the view and the water as well as the sand.

Of all the beaches in Barcelona, Nova Icaria is one of the most wheelchair accessible. Here they not only have amphibious wheelchairs, but also provide accessible bathrooms, changing rooms, and a hoist to assist with transferring from a wheelchair to an amphibious wheelchair.

.

24: Wellington Beach in Wellington, New Zealand

New Zealand is a great destination for a vacation because there’s so much to do. Ships Creek is a trail lined with boardwalks that allow you to get close to the coast as well as explore the natural terrain. The boardwalks are broken up with hard terrain to give you a full trekking experience. Napier and Kaikoura are also great for enjoying the waterfront. Most locations have paved paths which make them easily accessible.

If you’re looking to get into the water in New Zealand, there’s a variety of beach wheelchairs available at many beaches. These wheelchairs are capable of going into the water as well as across the sand for a full day at the beach. Destinations that have aquatic wheelchairs available include Wellington, Christchurch, and Auckland. Beach mats are also available in Wellington, allowing wheelchair users better traction across the sand.

.

25: Jaco Beach in Costa Rica

To increase accessible tourism in Costa Rica, Jaco Beach was the first beach to have recycled plastic mats installed on the beach to provide access to the shore. These beach mats allow wheelchair users to navigate through the sand with a more sturdy base, making the beach more enjoyable for all.

Other beach amenities that make it more wheelchair accessible include reserved parking for those with a disability, ramps, adapted bathrooms, locker rooms, and shaded areas. There are also amphibious wheelchairs available along with a defined beach area. Jaco Beach has a lift to help wheelchair users in and out of the water. These adaptations have made this destination in Costa Rica more wheelchair accessible, giving those that would like to visit a place to have a day at the beach.

There are a variety of wheelchair accessible beaches throughout the world. Many of the beaches in the United States are wheelchair accessible due to the ADA regulations, as well as adapted equipment and beach paths. Wheelchair users can explore the beaches both within the United States and abroad, allowing everyone to travel internationally to enjoy the waters around the globe.

8 Wheelchair Accessible Beaches in the U.S. (Recommended)

I’ve compiled a list below of some of America’s best wheelchair beaches – take a look and see if there’s one near you!

  1. Gulf Shores, AL
  2. Panama City Beach, FL
  3. San Diego Beaches, CA
  4. Key Largo, FL
  5. Hanauma Bay, HI
  6. Myrtle Beach, SC
  7. Stearns Park Beach, Ludington, MI
  8. Tybee Island, GA

Gulf Shores, AL

The south is well known for its hospitality. You’ll find this especially true for Gulf Shores, Alabama. Not only are the locals polite, with that wonderful southern drawl, but the beaches are sandy-white and pristine. You’ll probably want to rent a beach wheelchair to make the most of your visit. These chairs are made specifically for sandy travel, so you can roll about the shoreline with ease. Luckily, there are numerous beach resorts and companies offering rentals throughout this area.

For dolphin lovers, you’ll probably want to think about taking a local cruise. There’s nothing quite like seeing these smart and majestic creatures swimming fancy-free in the wild. They often like to swim by the boats, so you can see them up close and personal, along with a host of sea birds and other wildlife. If you’re planning ahead, you’ll find there are charter boats available that offer full wheelchair accessibility.

Panama City Beach, FL

What could be better than being able to roll onto the beach in your own wheelchair? Located on sparkling turquoise waters, you’ll want to visit the M.B. Miller County Pier at Panama City Beach. Here you’ll find the wheelchair version of the “red carpet” called the Mobi-Mat. You can roll directly from the wooden walkway ramp onto this smooth rubber pathway, perfect for power and manual wheelchairs, plus those who use walkers and other mobility aids.

This wheelchair accessible beach offers another advantage for mobility device users called the Mobi-Chair. There are two Mobi-Chairs available, free of charge, on a first-come, first-served basis. These unique chairs can float and seat two people. The wheelchair user gets strapped in and pushed to the seashore by a companion. Once in the water, the person pushing the chair hops into the back seat, and both float out onto the sea. You’ll probably want to arrive at the beach early to take advantage of these chairs!

San Diego Beaches, CA

While there are over a dozen wheelchair accessible beaches in San Diego (check out this excellent guide to San Diego’s beaches), you’ll probably want to visit Coronado City Beach, Mission Beach, or Imperial Beach. The sand at Coronado City Beach literally sparkles due to the mica, a gold-like mineral, that is found here. Mission Beach features the classic, bustling boardwalk and is perfect for grabbing a bite to eat. Imperial Beach is the city’s southernmost beach, just four miles from Mexico, and is a wonderful setting to take in a stunning seaside sunset.

Not only are these some of the most beautiful beaches around, they offer motorized and manual beach wheelchairs free of charge to visitors. Or if you need something with a little more power, Scootaround can provide rentals throughout San Diego as well. The beaches also offer handicapped parking and wheelchair accessible restrooms, so you’ll enjoy the ocean breeze and eternal views while lounging in the moderate temperatures that make this city famous. The powered beach chairs are a blend of a regular power wheelchair and a dune buggy, allowing independent exploration of the beach, while the manual beach wheelchair requires a friend to assist. What’s better than spending the day at the beach with a friend anyway?

Key Largo, FL

Home to a variety of wheelchair accessible beach resorts, the golden and white sands amidst the soul-soothing sounds of lapping waves make this a favorite beach hotspot. Key Largo is renowned for sunbathing on the beach, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, fishing, and is home to a unique ecosystem.

A visit here would be incomplete without chartering a boat. Luckily, Tranquil Adventures offers wheelchair accessible boat eco-tours. In proximity to the Everglades, tourists will have the chance to see native mangroves, underwater coral reefs, and may even spot an alligator lurking along the shore. Furthermore, Tranquil Adventures offers adaptive equipment and special lifts for water transfers, allowing travelers with disabilities the opportunity to snorkel, swim with the dolphins, and even kayak.

After spending a day upon the sea, you’ll probably want to watch the sunset while dining on fresh seafood. There are many wheelchair accessible indoor and outdoor eateries throughout Key Largo.

Hanauma Bay, HI

How does a visit to one of Hawaii’s wheelchair accessible beaches sound? Look no further than Hanauma Bay, which means “Curved Bay” in Hawaiian and features an 1,800-foot crescent-shaped beach. This natural wonder is carved out among the cliffs of an ancient volcanic crater.

With a mountainous backdrop, this protected beach is accessed from the top side via road or a transport shuttle. The shuttle is only $1 per person and is highly recommended, as the steep road has been known to burn out power wheelchair motors. Another option is to travel via car. If you use Para City Transport in your hometown, there is a reciprocal agreement in Hawaii, meaning you can schedule a ride for only $2.

Last, beach wheelchairs are offered free of charge to visitors. You can pick one up at the beach kiosk, which is open from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. daily. You’ll probably want to take your own cushion for optimal comfort. Otherwise, get ready to enjoy a fun-filled day at the beach on this excursion.

Myrtle Beach, SC

With over 60 miles of beachfront property, Myrtle Beach is a top destination for beach-goers. This city is one of the most famous wheelchair accessible beach resorts. Dedicated to inclusivity, there are over two dozen fully accessible beach entrances spattered from one end of the city to the other. Additionally, free parking at metered spaces is available to anyone with a handicapped hang tag or distinguished Veteran license plate tag.

On the beach, you’ll hear Atlantic waves crashing while enjoying moderate temperatures year-round. The city also offers beach wheelchairs free of charge and will even deliver them to your requested location. The promenade is the ideal spot to savor an ice cream cone after a hot day on the beach. When you’re ready to relax under the setting sun, the Marsh Walk at Murrell’s Inlet offers visitors a roll along a half-mile accessible walkway. Here, you can also enjoy fine waterfront dining as the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Stearns Park Beach, Ludington, MI

If you’ve never considered a visit to Lake Michigan, you’re missing out on the opportunity to visit both a woodland and beachfront region. You’ll probably want to begin your journey at Stearns Park Beach in Ludington, which was voted as the fifth most accessible walkway in the nation. Here you can remain in your own wheelchair while exploring the beaches of Lake Michigan. The north walkway extends to the water’s edge and is perfect for all types of wheelchairs. The south walkway meets up with the concrete walkway and ends at the pier.

Another famous sight to see when visiting Ludington is the North Breakwater Light. You’re sure to have seen this famous lighthouse in pictures and movies, but it can only be called a light since a house was never attached, thus its name. Lastly, this area boasts the best of both worlds with forested woodland and waterfront trails snaking their way throughout Ludington State Park. If you’re ready to make smores around a campfire, many of the campsites here are also wheelchair accessible.

Tybee Island, GA

Another one of the southern wheelchair accessible beach resorts, the charm and natural splendor of Tybee Island will let you unwind in style and comfort. The beaches here are also home to Mobi-Mats, so accessing the beaches from the walkway ramps is a breeze. Speaking of a breeze, you’ll feel the warm air tickle your hair and fill your senses with the smell of salty sea spray. The Mobi-Mats wind throughout the entire tip of the peninsula and the city offers free beach wheelchairs to traverse the sandy areas. They even offer a floatable beach wheelchair so you too can enjoy a water-logged afternoon at the beach.

Tybee Island is an important nesting area for loggerhead sea turtles, and you’ll often spot the little ones making their heroic journey to the sea, especially during the early dawn hours or late nights. These special turtles are protected, so please do not touch them or their nests, or shine bright lights on them during the nighttime.

An adventure at one of these wheelchair accessible beaches will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Whether basking in the sun on a golden beach, rolling about the boardwalk, or viewing wildlife in its natural glory, you are sure to find the perfect beach destination suited to your tastes and needs.

Traveling to one of these beaches? Scootaround can take care of all your mobility rental needs, with a wide range of options that are sure to help make your beachfront vacation unforgettable.

8 Fantastic Wheelchair-Accessible Beaches In The U.S.

Everyone has the right to bask in the sun on a beach and to breathe in that salty sea air. However, many people who are mobility challenged may not have access to beaches because they can’t maneuver their wheelchairs or scooters in the sand.

Good news: These days, a growing number of beaches in the United States use Mobi-Mats, portable rollout beach access mats that provide a firm and safe surface over sand or dirt. Some mats may extend to the edge of an ocean or lake (although many do not, because high tides may destroy the materials in the mats). Some beaches provide wide-wheeled beach wheelchairs or, more rarely, wheelchairs with flotational wheels and armrests.

1. Siesta Key Beach

Siesta Key, Florida

Siesta Key is located on Florida’s Gulf Coast near Sarasota, and its famous powdery white sand beach often appears on lists of the Best Beaches in the United States. You’ll find a 400-foot Mobi-Mat stretching from the paved parking lot to the shoreline. At Siesta Key and other lifeguarded Sarasota beaches (including Lido Key, Longboat Key, Venice, Casey Key, and Manasota Key), beach wheelchairs can be obtained from the lifeguard towers free of charge every day.

Pro Tip: The beach wheelchairs at Siesta Key beach are manual, meaning that you will need someone to push them.

2. Miami Beach

Miami Beach, Florida

Miami Beach, located on a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, is directly across from the city of Miami. It is a great destination for wheelchair-accessible beaches because it offers Mobi-Mat paths and free rentals for both manual beach wheelchairs and motorized beach wheelchairs.

You can swap out your own wheelchair for the beach version at Beach Patrol (1001 Ocean Drive) and South Pointe Park. There are more than 20 entrances to the Miami Beaches with Mobi-Mats or IPE (an exotic hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot and decay and is hard-surfaced) boardwalks.

In 2016, the Sabrina Cohen Foundation launched its free Adaptive Beach Days program in Miami Beach to provide access to the beach and ocean for disabled individuals, veterans, children with special needs, and the elderly.

Pro Tip

Also check out Hollywood Beach, about 15 miles farther north along the coast. Hollywood Beach was the first destination in Florida to offer wheelchair-access mats leading to the beach. There are eight access areas to the water for wheelchair users along the famous Broadwalk.

3. Destin Beaches

Destin, Florida

Destin is a resort town located on the Gulf of Mexico. With Panama City Beach directly to the east and historic Pensacola Beach directly to the west, there are a plethora of accessible beaches from which to choose. Many beaches in and around Destin offer wooden walkways and ramps to the beaches. The city of Destin itself offers free beach wheelchairs, but reservations are recommended.

Pro Tip

The Destin Fire Control District provides a no-cost Beach Wheelchair Program to allow residents or visitors access to the beach from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

4. Myrtle Beach

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach in South Carolina has some 60 miles of coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. While the city of Myrtle Beach has 114 public beach access points, only nine of these are fully accessible or have a beach access ramp, so make sure that you find the right one.

5. Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach, on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, has been cited as one of the Top Ten Most Accessible Beach Towns in the world. Grommet Island Park is considered the first place in the United States to have a wheelchair-accessible beach. There are free chairs available there, as well as a completely accessible playground and accessible walkways on the sand. There is also a flat, smooth, and accessible 3-mile-long boardwalk along the shore, with shops, hotels, restaurants, and beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean.

6. Oxnard Beach Park

Oxnard, California

Oxnard Beach Park in Oxnard, about an hour northwest of Los Angeles, contains one of the country’s oldest accessible beaches, with a 900-foot-long concrete path weaving among the sand dunes and leading to the beach. Called Rehab Point Path, this path was built more than a quarter of a century ago, thanks to the efforts of disabled World War II veteran Ed Hunt.

Pro Tip

Nearer to Los Angeles, both Santa Monica and Venice beaches are more crowded, but both offer all-terrain wheelchairs. These can be reserved ahead of time.

Newport Beach, California

7. Newport Beach

Newport Beach, California

On Newport Beach (about 45 minutes south of Los Angeles), beach wheelchairs can be borrowed from the lifeguard stands under Newport Pier and at Corona del Mar State Beach. Employees at both sites will help people in and out of the chairs. There are also several miles of smooth concrete paths on the boardwalks and promenades along Newport Beach and Balboa Island; most are accessible.

Pro Tip: The California Coastal Commission has a map and list of beach wheelchair locations on all of the state’s beaches.

Hanauma Bay

8. Hanauma Bay

Oahu, Hawaii

Although the beach at Hanauma Bay on Oahu is located at the bottom of a steep cliff (created by the collapse of an ancient volcano), it is still one of the more accessible beaches in Hawaii and a wonderful spot for snorkeling. There is a tram that runs from the rim down to the beach which is included in the price of admission. Beach wheelchairs are available free of charge at the beach kiosk on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations must be made to enter the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve (be sure to check open hours and days).

Other accessible beaches on Oahu include Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park, Kailua Beach Park, and Fort DeRussy.

Pro Tip

There are also a number of accessible beaches on the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. Lydgate Beach Park and Poipu Beach on Kauai offer all-terrain wheelchairs. Kealia Pond Coastal Boardwalk on Maui is located within a national wildlife refuge. The Big Island has at least 11 accessible beaches. Check the Hawaii Visitors Bureau for additional advice.

Where There’s A Wheel, There’s A Way

Beach lovers can independently find destinations that are accessible. However, travelers might well consider booking travel through a company dedicated to folks who have more mobility needs. One such company is accessibleGO, a travel platform for people with disabilities (which also provides a community forum). Other companies that offer accessible tours or that include certified accessible travel agents include Wheel the World, Sage Traveling, and Planet Abled.

Access to the beaches is vital for those who are mobility challenged, but accessible parking, washrooms, and curb ramps are also necessary for beachgoers. And, while the Americans with Disabilities Act mandates that public beaches be accessible, there are few specific directives.

Tamar Sherman of Northport, New York, found that the mat at her local beach had “a curb in front of it so it was inaccessible to people who used wheelchairs,” and that it was impossible to get into the wheelchair beach buggy on her own. “It takes more than equipment to make beaches fully accessible,” she says, “It also takes workers who are trained in their use.” When beaches provide total accessibility to those who need it, every person can experience the joys of basking in the sun.

9 Best Wheelchair-Accessible Beaches in the U.S.

Beautiful sandy beaches are a vacationers’ dream. For wheelchair users or anyone with a mobility aid (cane, crutches, walker, and scooter), the shifting surface can be treacherous and often impossible to navigate. Fortunately, a day at the beach can be enjoyed by everyone when communities consider the needs of all their visitors.

Beach Wheelchair Travel Tips

If you or someone in your travel group requires an accessible beach, spend a little time researching the destination before you leave home. Call or visit the area’s official tourism website—often called a Convention and Visitor Bureau or CVB —to find the best match for your particular needs.

Wheelchair-Accessible Beaches

Accessible beaches have ramps or specially designed synthetic mats that grip the sand and create a stable surface. Typically, these do not reach all the way to the water because high tides would cover them. If you want to explore beyond the mat, you’ll need a beach wheelchair.

Beach Wheelchairs

Unlike standard wheelchairs, beach wheelchairs feature oversized wheels that easily glide over the sand and won’t get stuck. Some beach wheelchairs are motorized—allowing the driver to be independent. Most manual beach wheelchairs do require someone else to push the occupant.

Hundreds of beaches across the country provide beach wheelchairs. You can borrow one for the day or a few hours—often at no cost. Typically, you’re asked to leave something valuable, such as a driver’s license or deposit, in exchange for the loaner beach wheelchair. Most communities only have a small number of beach wheelchairs available and lend them on a first come first served basis.

To guarantee you have a  beach wheelchair during your vacation, renting might be the best option. Private businesses that rent beach gear—paddle-boards, umbrellas, bikes—often rent beach wheelchairs.

Whether borrowing or renting a beach wheelchair, be sure to address when the chair needs to be returned and ask for detailed instructions on how to use it. Some beach wheelchairs will be ruined if they go into the water and others can float in the waves.  Thoroughly discuss the features of the beach wheelchair before venturing out and ask for the phone number of someone who can assist you with any additional questions or concerns.

For the wheelchair user’s comfort and safety, consider bringing a cushion from home. Not every beach wheelchair has a seat belt. Travelers can improvise by using a long piece of velcro looped around their waist. Also, some wheelchair users may find transferring from their personal chair to a low slung beach wheelchair difficult and should plan accordingly.

Whether you are visiting a small seashore town or a beach in a metropolis, there’s dozens of communities with a range of accessible services. Here’s a list to get you started.

The Best Wheelchair-Accessible Beaches in the U.S.

Corpus Christi, Texas

Visit Corpus Christi

Cruising the shore is a breeze in Corpus Christi where all-terrain beach wheelchairs easily maneuver the soft sand. The bright yellow balloon tires, high backs, and padded armrests provide a comfortable ride and transform  into floating lounge chairs when taken into the water. Borrow a beach wheelchair from the lifeguard stands at Packery Channel, Michael J. Ellis Beach & Seawall,  Whitecap Beach, and McGee Beach. On the mainland, a beach wheelchair is available at McGee Beach. Beach wheelchairs are loaned at no charge (must leave photo I.D.) from noon until 6 pm.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama

Known as a family-friendly getaway, Gulf Shores is about 50 miles south of Mobile. Mild temperatures and 32 miles of pristine beaches makes this coastal community a year-round destination. The city has four beach mats in place:

  • East Gulf Place (parking/beach access for Gulf Shores residents only)
  • Gulf Place just east of Hangout Restaurant
  • Bathhouse at 101 West Beach Blvd.
  • West Gulf Place (public parking/beach access)

Beach wheelchairs can be rented from three local companies.

Huntington Beach, California

Not only does the beach provide access at multiple entrances, but there’s an adaptive surf program, a therapeutic horseback riding center, and an all-inclusive playground. Wheelchair-friendly beach access can be found at the state beach parking lots, the Huntington Beach Pier, 11th and 9th Streets, and Dog Beach. Rent a beach wheelchair from Zack’s Rentals.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Kevin Ruck | Adobe Stock

Known as the Grand Strand, the Myrtle Beach area spans sixty miles and is one of the most wheelchair-friendly destinations in the country with more than 40 accessible beach access points. Loaner beach wheelchairs with balloon tires and seat belts are delivered and picked up from your location at no charge. Travelers with a valid handicapped, Purple Heart, Disabled American Veterans, or Medal of Honor vehicle license tag or an official handicapped hang tag may park for free at any publicly operated meter.

Pensacola, Florida

EW Bullock, Pensacola Advertising Agency

Pensacola’s more than 450 years of history, walkable downtown, and 18 miles of sugar-white beaches makes a fascinating get-away. Five of the beaches have mats: Casino Beach, Park West, Moms Beach (Quietwater Beach), Boardwalk Beach, and Baby Beach. Johnson Beach, a designated recreational area on the Gulf Islands National Seashore, has beach wheelchairs available. Ask a park ranger or volunteer for assistance.

South Walton County, Florida

Visit South Walton

Located in Northwest Florida, the 26 miles of South Walton County beaches sit beside the emerald waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Each of the sixteen beach neighborhoods emit a unique vibe. Seven of the nine beaches are ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible and offer different benefits. For example, the Van Ness Butler Jr. Beach entry is about a three minute walk from the intimate Watercolor Inn. Stairs and a wooden ramp provide access to the beach which has accessible bathrooms and parking. During peak season, life guards are stationed here. A beach wheelchair can be borrowed free of charge through the South Walton Fire District (available March 1 – Oct 31, 10:30 am – 5:30 pm).

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Milwaukee County Parks

Last year, Bradford Beach completed the final phase of a five-year accessibility plan to make the beach usable for people with a range of disabilities. A 100-foot-ramp, made of smooth concrete, runs from the street to the beach. The 8-foot width allows two wheelchairs to easily share the path. A portable mat extends from the end of the sidewalk to the water’s edge seasonally. Four beach wheelchairs may be borrowed at no charge through the concessionaire, The Dock, at the Beach House.

San Diego, California

Disabled Beach – Beach Adaptation Guide for MHS

People with disabilities, like everyone else, have the right to a beach holiday. To do this, a place of rest near the water should be adapted taking into account the characteristics of people with disabilities of all categories and other people with limited mobility.

For the movement of wheelchair users, a separate descent to the water with a hard, rough surface, equipped with handrails 0.7 and 0.9 meters high, and a changing cabin, also with the possibility of entering it along a special path with handrails, should be provided. The number of tracks and slopes is not regulated, the main thing is at least one. The dimensions of the track are specified in clause 5 of joint venture 59.13330.2016 “Accessibility of buildings and structures for people with limited mobility”: width – not less than 1. 3 m, longitudinal slope – not more than 5%, and transverse – not more than 2%.

To create the right accessibility project, you need a well-prepared terms of reference!

Tiflotsentr “Vertical” develops projects on accessibility of the beach for people with limited mobility. To do this, you need to download the completed terms of reference for the design or leave an application on our website.

In order for a person in a wheelchair to move along the beach without sand, at the risk of getting bogged down or falling, it would be good to lay out separate paths 60 cm wide from longitudinal tactile indicators. The blind and visually impaired will also be able to move along them. Therefore, any obstacles, such as intersections with other paths, should be marked with warning markings with tactile cones laid in a linear manner. The width of the markup field must match the width of the track.

This manual takes into account changes to the new set of rules SP 59.13330. 2016. The adaptation scheme complies with the standards that came into force on May 15, 2017.

BROTHERHOOD Foundation Project

Holidays on the coast helps people with disabilities improve their health and recharge their batteries! Allows you to lead an active lifestyle!

Where is the beach?

The beach has a very advantageous and convenient location: 40 km from Simferopol (35 km from the airport), 10 km from Evpatoria, 5 km from Saki. Near the beach there is a road and a railway. Also, the attractive location of the beach is very convenient for vacationers because its distance from the sea is only 100 meters. In addition, 100 meters away is the largest water park in the Crimea “Banana Republic”.

For whom?

For many people with disabilities, a holiday at sea is an impossible dream, since the beach areas are not suitable for people with limited mobility. A person in a wheelchair cannot independently drive up to the coastline, enter the water, or transfer to a sun lounger. That is why a barrier-free environment should be created not only in the city, but also in recreation areas, including on the beaches! Relaxing by the water and swimming are not only good for health promotion. For people with disabilities and their companions, this is an outlet and a way to recharge with positive energy and good mood for the whole year.

The beach is the hallmark of the resort town of Saki.
