La Concha beach, Fuerteventura, perfect for the whole family

Fuerteventura entices you to come and enjoy its coastline. The oldest of the Canary Islands (geologically speaking) has around 150 kilometres of shores with typical volcanic and black pebble beaches, and fine, white sand beaches too. El Cotillo, a small fishing village in the north-west of the island, is home to La Concha beach (not to be confused with the beach of the same name on the Island of Lobos), an idyllic spot considered by many to be the best beach on the island. In addition, it combines the charm of unspoilt coves with the ease of visiting a well-serviced beach. Join us below on a virtual tour around La Concha beach to discover all its nooks and crannies.

La Concha, a multi-coloured beach in Fuerteventura

Over the past few years, La Concha beach has sporadically flown the prized Blue Flag above its shores, an award given to beaches and ports that comply with certain requirements concerning information, environmental management, water quality, safety and services.

The beach is really easy to reach: from the village of El Cotillo follow the directions on a sign that points you towards Los Lagos, Playas, Faro; after 700 metres another turning to the left leads you directly to a car park right next to the beach.

La Concha beach is probably most famous for its huge range of colours: the turquoise blue ocean contrasts with fine, white sand that is dotted with chunks of black volcanic rock. La Concha isn’t usually too crowded so you can easily find a good spot to set up camp—you’ll soon notice two important factors here: the wind and the surf. La Concha is a fairly windy beach, something that locals have tried to combat by building corralitos, small arches of volcanic rock that break up the wind. In fact, some of the corralitos that are scattered along the shore are large enough for a whole family to fit inside.

Paradoxically, surf is sometimes practically non-existent here thanks to a natural horseshoe-shaped reef offshore that functions like a protective shield. This means that a huge number of marine animals live in the water so scuba-diving is very popular and highly recommended.

La Concha Beach

What’s more, the International Kite Festival has been held at La Concha each year since 1987. This competition sees 450 kites from different countries around the world flutter in the skies and decorate the shores of this beach in El Cotillo, adding to its charm.

Finally, make sure you don’t miss the sunset at the end of your day of relaxation and exploration: at this point on Fuerteventura’s coastline the skies turn a mysterious shade halfway between lilac and blue.

La Concha beach, all the services you need in El Cotillo

La Concha beach succeeds in retaining the beauty of an unspoilt beach but has all kinds of services for beach-goers at the same time. Wooden walkways make it easier to reach the sand for people with pushchairs or wheelchairs. There are also public toilets and showers if you want to wash off any annoying sand before leaving.

And if you fancy a bite after long hours on the beach, Bar Torino is close to the car park, a beach bar that serves dishes typical to the area, such as ‘wrinkled potatoes’ with mojo sauce or fresh grilled fish. However, if you’d prefer a table and tablecloth, Italian and Mediterranean restaurant Azzurro Chill Out is just 300 metres away and it has a full menu, a long wine list and live music.

La Concha Beach

Other El Cotillo beaches at a glance

La Concha beach, also known among locals as Playa Chica, is especially enchanting due its diminutive size. However, at 200 metres long and 60 metres wide, this does mean that people who love strolling along the seashore might be a bit disappointed. But there’s no need to worry! El Cotillo has many other beaches apart from La Concha and they can all be walked along as part of a 4-kilometre long route.

For example, Los Lagos beach is connected to La Concha to the south; this family beach is similar in appearance to La Concha but is unusual because small natural pools form among its rocks so swimming here is a real adventure.

You’ll find two other beaches in the opposite direction, to the north: El Islote and El Río. They also have similar characteristics to Los Lagos and La Concha, however, El Islote and El Río are both unspoilt and isolated without any kind of nearby services. They’re a great option if you’re interested in naturism.

And if you continue bordering the coast northwards, after 2.5 km you’ll come to El Tostón lighthouse, which was built on Punta Ballena in 1897. In 2008, the lighthouse building was converted into the Traditional Fishing Museum, a collection of original pieces that aims to reveal the historical importance of fishing on the island. In addition, the views from this spot get better and better as the sun rises and sets.

10 Best things to do in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

One of the beautiful lagoons in El Cotillo

El Cotillo used to be a small fishing village in Fuerteventura and nowadays it’s a quiet place for a holiday on the island, with plenty of amazing beaches nearby, some of each are ideal for surfers.

El Cotillo is situated on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura and it’s home to some of the best beaches on the island. La Concha beach was voted among the most beautiful beaches in Europe by Tripadvisor users and it is truly a small paradise, with all the lagoons and crystal clear waters. The village offers some nice hotels and good restaurants, and it’s usually a quiet place, in comparison with other resorts on the island like Corralejo.

What to do in El Cotillo

The village gained lots of popularity in the last years, and it is all because of the beautiful landscape, which is so peaceful and relaxing.

The beaches are the main attractions in El Cotillo, especially Playa de La Concha, ideal for families, which is easy to find and offers easy car parking. From here you can continue your road towards the lagoons in El Cotillo, a series of small beaches, very private and with beautiful white sand.

1. La Concha beach

La Concha Beach – El Cotillo’s most popular beach and one of the best in Fuerteventura

La Concha beach is featured on many postcards of Fuerteventura and it’s been named as one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe by Tripadvisor and many other travel publications.

The white sand, turquoise water, the view… everything makes it idyllic and a great place to visit in El Cotillo.

One thing we need to mention about Playa de la Concha is that it’s often quite windy here and there are no sunbeds or umbrellas for hire. If you plan to spend several hours here you should bring your own beach tent or parasol, otherwise, you will definitely get a sunburn. Also, the beach looks different depending on the tide, so when the tide is high the water gets deep quickly and when the tide is low, it’s a great place to be with kids, as they can fully enjoy this beautiful beach.

There are no restaurants or shops on the beach, so it’s recommended to bring something with you to eat and drink.

2. El Cotillo lagoons

El Cotillo Lagoons

The lagoons are El Cotillo’s own collection of private beaches, secluded, with wonderful calm waters, ideal also for families with small children.

You can get here by car or on foot, and it is worth spending here at least a few hours to explore around the lagoons.

We love coming here at low tide in summer, when the water is warm, with almost no waves and it is probably the calmest image you will see of the Atlantic Ocean.

There are no bars or shops, so if you plan to spend the day here it is advisable to bring some snacks or you will have to go back to El Cotillo in order to have lunch.

People come here because of the wild and untouched landscape, where you can admire the true beauty of Fuerteventura, with its marvelous beaches and endless dunes of sand.

3. Surfing in El Cotillo

El Cotillo is one of the best spots for surfing in Fuerteventura and there are people coming here also from Lajares, Corralejo and all over the island, just to ride the great ocean waves.

If you’re inexperienced and you want to learn, El Cotillo is a great place to be in Fuerteventura, as there are many local surfing schools to choose from. In El Cotillo, you can also try SUP or kitesurfing, as the location of the village is ideal for water sports in general.

4. Playa del Castillo (Piedra Playa)

Piedra Playa in El Cotillo

If you are interested in surfing, then once you get to El Cotillo village you should head left, towards Playa del Castillo, also known as Playa Piedra. This beach is extremely popular among surfers in El Cotillo but you can also enjoy the views and the landscape even if you don’t surf.

Continuing from Playa Piedra there are 2 more beaches which are wild and with big waves, also ideal for surfing.

5. Castillo de El Toston

On your way to Playa Piedra, you will pass Castillo de El Toston (Castillo del Cotillo), which is a small circular structure, which can be visited for a small entrance fee of 1,5 euros. You will find out more about Fuerteventura’s history and it also has beautiful views of the ocean.

6. El Cotillo lighthouse

El Cotillo Lighthouse, officially known as Faro El Toston (El Toston Lighthouse)

On the road towards the lagoons, about 5 km from El Cotillo, you will pass by El Toston Lighthouse, where you will find a small museum and a cafe.

The Traditional Fishing Museum is showcasing aspects of traditional fishing in Fuerteventura and also offers panoramic 360 degrees views towards the ocean and also Lanzarote.

  • It is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 am till 6 pm.
  • Entrance fee: 3 Euros

7. El Cotillo Market

Every Friday evening there is a small market in El Cotillo. It’s a nice place to look around for souvenirs and maybe afterward, get dinner and watch the beautiful sunset in El Cotillo.

8. Watch the sunset

Since the village is situated on the west coast, El Cotillo is the best place to admire one of the most dramatic sunsets in Fuerteventura, so even if you are staying somewhere else on the island, it is worth visiting El Cotillo just to be able to see the sunset and the colors of the sky at golden hour.

9. Fuerteventura en Musica (FEM)

FEM is an annual event organized on the beach in El Cotillo.

The entrance is free and it’s a really popular music festival especially among the Spaniards, who come from all over Spain in order to attend. It’s a really nice and chilled vibe and it lasts for 2 days (Friday and Saturday).

10. Discover the bars and restaurants in El Cotillo

La Vaca Azul is a well-known restaurant in Fuerteventura, and there are people coming to the village just to eat here. You will find fresh fish and seafood, great serving and nice views from the terrace. It is easy to find, there are signs that guide you to the restaurant.

Azzurro is another good restaurant, which is a bit harder to find, on the road that takes to Faro El Toston.

It serves both Spanish and Italian dishes, also with fresh fish and seafood.

Places to stay in El Cotillo

El Cotillo does not have many hotels like the bigger resorts, so private apartment rentals are the most popular options in terms of accommodation.

You can find lots of nice apartments in El Cotillo on Airbnb, with breathtaking ocean views, which would offer you more privacy than a hotel, a fully fitted kitchen and more space than a hotel room.

The most popular hotel in the village is by far the Hotel Cotillo Beach, a 3 stars hotel with beautiful ocean views. All the rooms have a balcony and pretty spacious and the location is ideal if you like surfing, since you will be close to some of the best locations in Fuerteventura. There are some mixed reviews about this hotel, especially regarding the food served, so you should take this into consideration. However, if you are decided to stay near El Cotillo beach, then this is one of your best choices.

If you think El Cotillo is not for you, then find out more about where to stay in Fuerteventura.

The Canary Islands is a place that can be visited all year round because of their fantastic weather.
The best time for the perfect beach holidays is from April-May to October, but the rest of the months is also good weather and more calm because there are less tourists.

Good to know

El Cotillo Beaches & lagoons

The El Cotillo beaches and El Cotillo lagoons are a great draw for people staying all over the island and are one of El Cotillo’s greatest assets. Although many people refer to them just as El Cotillo beach, there are actually many more than just one beach around the village (Playa del Cotillo if you are Spanish or spiaggia El Cotillo if Italian).

In fact, El Cotillo beaches provide probably the widest variety of beaches anywhere on the island. They comprise, without doubt, some of the best beaches in Fuerteventura. They are so diverse that there is definitely an El Cotillo beach to suite everyone’s taste – whether you like your beaches quiet or busy or perhaps small or large beaches.

You may just like to lie on the sand, or in a fox hole, with the occasional dip in the calm waters of the lagoon beaches. If you like to be more active and do some surfing then head for the water sports beach (Piedra Playa) with its 1.5km of sand and some great waves.

Fortunately, you will not find row upon row of sunbeds, umbrellas, or any of the other tourist rubbish, found on some other beaches in Fuerteventura. Just wonderful, natural, unspoiled beaches with lovely sand and clear water.

El Cotillo Beaches Map

El Cotillo Beaches Map

The beaches to the north of El Cotillo

  • To get to these beaches on foot. If you are arriving in El Cotillo on the no 8 bus from Corralejo then stay on it when it gets to the bus station and then get off at the bus stop through El Cotillo village, near the Cotillo Beach Hotel. You will see the start of the beaches when you get off so just head for those and walk along the various small beaches until you find one you like. It will take you about 10 minutes gentle stroll to get to La Concha Beach.
  • To get to these beaches by car. When you arrive in El Cotillo you will see the football ground on the right (with floodlights) so drive past this and take the first right hand turn which is signposted to Faro de Toston (the lighthouse) and there is a new large El Cotillo sign (more like a sculpture) at this junction. Follow that road through the village and past the Cotillo Beach Hotel (on your right). After another 500 metres the road turns 90º left and the runs along the coast behind the beaches. The most popular la Concha Beach is opposite the Azzurro restaurant with its own car park behind it.

La Concha Beach (Playa de la Concha)

La Concha Beach

Playa de la Concha Fuerteventura is the most popular of the El Cotillo lagoon beaches (La concha = the shell). It is just to the north of the village, on the road towards the lighthouse or a nice stroll from the village along the smaller beaches before it.

It takes the form of a small bay with lovely white sand and has calm waters as it is protected from the big waves by rocky reefs just offshore. This makes it great for children, swimming and snorkelling.

During very high spring tides a shallow lagoon forms just behind the beach which is ideal for small children to play in.

This El Cotillo beach has to be one of the safest and best swimming beaches in Fuerteventura.

There are toilets and showers at the back of this beach.

Sue enjoying a paddle on La Concha Beach

This is a link to a live Playa de la Concha webcam so you can see up to the minute what it is like, how busy it is and whether the sun is shining!

Also at the back of the La Concha beach is a car park. This car park is where the annual Fuerteventura Music Festival takes place in July.

Although naturists can be found anywhere on Playa de la Concha they generally stick to the right-hand (north) side, near the rocks.

The only beach bar in El Cotillo, Torino’s, is located at the back of La Concha beach.

It is family run and serves fresh fish and many say makes the best paella in the village and perhaps even the best in Fuerteventura.

Torino

It is a very popular place on a sunny day to chill out with a beer or to have lunch. Also a lovely spot to watch the sunset. See Torino’s Facebook page for further details.

UPDATE: Sadly, the morons at the town hall have closed and dismantled Torino’s beach bar after 22 years, as well as two bars on the beaches in Corralejo. This is for “environmental reasons” which is code for the corrupt officials can make more money in another way.

My video of a walk along the beaches described below from El Cotillo to Torino’s for a drink.

The first beaches north of the village

The view from our honeymoon Marfolin apartment of the first beaches looking towards Playa de la Concha. The tide is out.

Between the village and Playa de la Concha are a series of small white sand beaches, all very sheltered from any waves, so ideal for a quick early morning dip. These are popular with families as they are a shorter walk I guess.

The popular Marfolin apartments, Cotillo Sunset Apartments and El Balcon apartments have direct access to the first El Cotillo beach to the north. When we staying in one of the El Balcon apartments, some years ago, my morning ritual was to get up, make myself a coffee and then walk into the sea up to my knees and drink it. Not a bad way to start the day.

First beach on the edge of El Cotillo going north towards La Concha beach

Caleton Beach

This is so called because of the small complex of Caleton apartments right on the edge of the beach. It is a small, but nevertheless, lovely beach. It is a great place to swim, although at low tide almost all of the water disappears. This beach is often frequented by naturists. Many naturists stay in the Caleton apartments.

Caleton Beach (Caleton apartments at the back of the beach)

There is a well-known rock pool which forms to the south (left) of the beach when the tide goes out that is always full of fish.

Rock pool on Caleton Beach

El Cotillo Lagoons

The lagoons (los lagos) extend from Caleton Beach pretty much all the way to the lighthouse and then on along the north shore almost to Corralejo. This includes the quirky Popcorn beach.

The lighthouse

There are lots of little beaches among the rocks with many of the stone circles to sunbathe in to keep out of the wind. For those that like to explore the minute world of rock pools there are many to be found among the rocks with small fish, crabs, shrimps and even the odd sea cucumber if you look closely.

This is the area most often used by naturists in El Cotillo as it is the most out of the way area but clothed and unclothed sun worshippers co-exist quite happily.

The beaches to the south of El Cotillo

To get to these beaches on foot. If you are arriving in El Cotillo by bus then get off at the bus station. The first beach, Piedra Playa, is only a few minutes walk along the cliff. Just walk past the Toston Tower and keep going. To get to Steps Beach will take you around 15 to 20 minutes along the cliff path.

To get to these beaches by car. The easiest way to get to these beaches is when you arrive in El Cotillo take the first turning on the left (next to the Dragon China 2012 shop and opposite the Superdino supermarket). Follow this road around a right hand bend until you get to the junction. Turn left there and follow this well maintained track which passes behind all of the beaches. You can turn off and park at various places to access different parts of the Surfer’s beach or continue on to Steps Beach.

Surfers’ Beach / Piedra Playa /Playa del Castillo

Piedra Playa/Surfers’ Beach

Just south of the village is the Piedra Playa (Stone Beach) also known as both the Wild Beach and Surfers’ Beach locally and is shown as Playa del Castillo on many maps. Despite its name it does have lots of lovely soft sand – 1.5km of it in fact. It is less than a 10 minute walk from the new harbour.

This is the most popular beach for water sports including surfers, kite surfers and wind surfers. Many surf and kite surf schools operate from this beach. Having said that it is still popular with sunbathers and families, particularly at the El Cotillo end.

There is a lifeguard station and a flag indicating whether it is safe for swimming or not.

This is a link to a live Piedra Playa Beach webcam so you can see how busy it is, what the waves are like and whether the sun is shining!

Nature is wonderful as most winters there is a large storm with big waves and much of the sand on this beach gets washed away. Within a couple of months the beach repairs itself which I find quite incredible.

2nd beach going south

Our feet on this beach a few years ago

There is another beach just around the southern headland of the Surfer’s Beach that can often be reached at low tide by walking along the base of the cliff. It may have a name but I am not aware what it is.

If you are as nimble as a mountain goat you can also follow a steep path down the cliff to reach it.

If you go around the cliffs at low tide then you may need to go up the cliff path to get out if you get caught out by the rising tide. So be careful!

There was a well-known English man called Billie who lived on a flat area half way up the cliff in a makeshift shelter for many years. He died unfortunately a few years ago.

Steps Beach / Playa de Escaleras

Steps Beach

This beach is quite a walk, as it is 4km south of the village, so is best reached in a car, along the coast track (you can’t call it a road).

Steps beach is accessed down a set of Heath Robinson type steps, built by a German guy many years ago I believe – hence the name. It is the least accessible of all the El Cotillo beaches but certainly worth the effort to visit. See photo below.

Steps to get down to Steps Beach

It is a wonderful beach with beautiful sand and is generally not very busy, even in the summer. It is the best beach in Fuerteventura I think.

The stairs have recently been renovated which is great news.

Beach Webcams

There a few webcams in El Cotillo showing the beaches and the sea so you can see the state of the waves etc.

Piedra Playa Webcam – this is positioned in the Seahorse bar facing across the bay towards the beach

Playa de la Concha Webcam – this webcam is located at the Azzurro restaurant opposite the beach

The Other Beaches

The Old Harbour Beach

Old Harbour Beach

The Old Harbour Beach is used occasionally and mainly by locals. It is quite popular in August, particularly during the fiesta. On the first Sunday of the fiesta this is where the Virgin is transported from.

The New Harbour “Beach”

The smallest El Cotillo beach is a very small pebbly beach next to the quay in the new harbour. You can reach it either by walking through the harbour or follow the path down from the road above, opposite the Seahorse bar.

El Cotillo Beaches Naturist Information

Many of the El Cotillo beaches in and around the village are naturist friendly, with the exception of the beach in the old harbour. The further north towards the lighthouse you go, the more naturist the beaches become. They are some of the most popular nudist beaches in Fuerteventura Canary Islands.

The El Cotillo lagoons are probably the quietest of the Fuerteventura naturist beaches making them popular with many Fuerteventura naturists. As they are secluded with plenty of private areas they are suitable for people wanting to try naturism discretely first before trying more populated beaches.

The most popular of the El Cotillo beaches, La Concha beach, is a mixture of textile and naturist. Naturists tend to go towards the right hand side of the beach. Some days it is more naturist than others. The theory is that it depends on who arrives first. Many couples are happy to either be nude or wear something so if there are no naturists to be seen when they arrive they wear something but if there are some they join in.

The Surfers’ Beach/Piedra Playa used to be more naturist than it is now, particularly towards the far end away from the village. However, the beach is much busier these days, particularly with surf schools, so it is less naturist now.

If you go further south to Steps Beach then there are usually plenty of naturists as it is rarely busy. It is the least visited of the El Cotillo beaches so usually the quietest.

I have written an article on my Fuerteventura website about the naturist beaches of Fuerteventura and naturist accommodation which includes a Fuerteventura naturist beach map.

JP in Fuerteventura( Site Owner )

TOP 5 beaches in Spain

In Spain there is everything to ensure that even the most spoiled and sophisticated tourists get full pleasure from their vacation. A separate item on this list is beautiful, picturesque and incredibly numerous beaches of all types, shapes and sizes. Moreover, due to the fact that the country includes several islands, beach tours to Spain are in demand throughout the year.

The total length of the Spanish coastline is almost 5000 km, but the exact number is there are no beaches in Spain . But it is known that in 2021 this country once again retained its leadership in the number of beaches marked with the Blue Flag. At the moment, there are 615 beaches in the country that have been awarded this honorary European award!

We at Deluxe Voyage are working to ensure that you get the most out of your holiday in Spain, so we have compiled the TOP 5 best, in our opinion, beaches in countries that deserve your attention.

La Concha Beach, Basque Country

La Concha Beach, Basque Country

Located in the northern city of San Sebastian, this beach regularly ranks at the top of TripAdvisor’s travel platform and is included among the “12 Treasures of Spain” , and is also included in the rating of best beaches in Europe, compiled by the English edition of The Guardian. He deserved such unprecedented popularity due to a number of factors.

Name La Concha means “shell” in Spanish, and this is no coincidence. This is the shape of the bay, along the coast of which the specified beach stretches. Its length is 1350 meters, and the average width is 40 meters (during high tides, its area is reduced). The beach is covered with sand and surrounded by mountains, which perfectly protect it from wind and waves.

Along the beach is La Concha Promenade – the city’s promenade, which is always filled with vacationers. Sunbathers can be seen on the beach all year round, and some daredevils dare to swim here even in winter.

Playa de Illetas, Formentera

Playa de Illetas, Formentera

Reviews about this beach are usually full of superlative adjectives: it is called the most attractive, cleanest, most picturesque, stunning, etc. Playa de Illetas is located on the small island of Formentera , part of the Balearic Islands . This relatively small beach (its length is about 500 meters) is famous for its amazingly clear, azure water, the finest “powdery” white sand and picturesque landscapes.

Playa de Illetas is called one of the best places to relax in Spain with children: the sea is shallow here, the coast is very gentle, so the water is always perfectly warmed up. In addition, there are no noisy bars and restaurants, so you can fully enjoy the sounds of waves and wind on the beach.

Playa de Muro, Mallorca

Playa de Muro, Mallorca

In the bay of Alcudia, 62 km from the capital of the island of Mallorca – the city of Palma, there is a beach Playa de Muro . It is located on the territory of the natural park “Parque Natural S’Albufera” and is surrounded by pines and juniper thickets, which create a special atmosphere here. The beach stretches for 9km, it is covered with the purest golden sand and has a very gentle coast. The territory of the beach is conditionally divided into three parts: the western and central parts are more comfortable, several hotels have been built along them, and there is the necessary infrastructure. The eastern section is ideal for active beach lovers in Spain, in particular for sailing, water skiing and paragliding.

Playa del Duque, Tenerife

Playa del Duque, Tenerife

Playa del Duque is definitely the leader in popularity among other beaches of the island of Tenerife. It is located in its southwestern part, near the cities of Caleta and Playa de Fanabe. Unlike most island beaches, the coast here is covered not with dark volcanic sand, but with golden sand brought from Africa, which further increases its attractiveness in the eyes of vacationers. Playa del Duque is only 390 meters long and 60 meters wide. The bottom here is clean, without stones, but the depth starts quite quickly. This beach provides all possible amenities: cafes, rental points for sunbeds and umbrellas, showers and toilets, centers for practicing various sports. The swimming season here lasts all year round, so tours to Spain, to the resorts of Tenerife are constantly in demand.

Playa de las Catedrales, Bay of Biscay

Playa de las Catedrales, Bay of Biscay

One of the most picturesque and amazing beaches in Spain can be called Playa de las Catedrales , located on the northwest coast, on the Bay of Biscay . Its name translates as “the beach of the Cathedrals”, it deserved it thanks to the arches and caves that appear here in all its glory during low tides. Some of the rock formations are up to 30 meters high and look very impressive! Also, at low tide, a passage opens between the rocks, leading to the beaches located further, but when going there, you need to be careful, because. the tide comes quickly and inattentive tourists can be trapped. Playa de las Catedrales has been declared a natural monument in Spain and is one of the most photographed in the country.

Rodas Beach, Cies Islands

The title of the best beach in the world by the British newspaper The Guardian could well hold this title. There are several reasons why this beach is perfect for relaxing all day long. The Cies Islands are on stage Atlantic Islands National Park , a specially protected natural area. It can be reached by ferry from Vigo and other points on the Galician coast. The journey is worth it. Rodas beach is located next to the port, so it’s a bit of a walk to get there. Its water is very clear and the sand is fine and soft. It has been compared to a Caribbean beach, albeit with the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Cathedral Beach, Lugo

We continue north and Galicia has some of the most beautiful beaches in Spain. We have Playa de las Catedrales in the north, in Marinha de Lugo. A beach that stands out because you can walk around and take pictures of them. rock formations are so amazing that with centuries the erosion will disappear. Of course, we must know the tides, because at high tide the beach itself disappears into the water and only part of the rocks are visible. You must go there at low tide to fully enjoy it.

Bolonia Beach, Cadiz

Cadiz also has some incredible beaches, so it could be the perfect place to relax. One of the most famous is undoubtedly the beach of Bolonia. This place not only has natural beauty, being a protected area, but also has historical significance. On the one hand, we have dunes that move every year and on which we can walk. On the other side Ruins of Baelo Claudia . This Roman ruin is an archaeological site and it was a small coastal town that grew up around the second century BC.

Papagayo Beach, Lanzarote

Papagayo Beach is located in the south of Lanzarote. The various bays and beach areas are separated by rocky cliffs with low elevation, which means that on the beach you can enjoy different bays with a bit more privacy . From here, you can also see Lobos Island and Fuerteventura Island while swimming in the turquoise waters.

Cofete Beach, Fuerteventura

Be sure to visit this beach in Fuerteventura. It stands out for its untouched nature, for being surrounded by natural areas, like one of those beaches that are found off the beaten path, and also for the fact that its length is enormous, some 12 kilometers of arena enjoy. Of course, if we are swimming, we must be aware that there are currents in the water, and that it is better if we are experts.

La Concha Beach, San Sebastian

This beach has been voted the best beach in Europe and the sixth best in the world by Tripadvisor users in Traveller’s Choice. Undoubtedly, urban beaches do not have the same charm as those surrounded by natural areas, but they can also be among the best. In this case we have San Sebastian beach , which has always been considered a good, quality beach, ideal for families.

Ses Illetes Beach, Formentera

This sandy area on the island of Formentera has become one of the best. Its almost transparent water will give the impression that we are swimming in the pool . The sand is very clean, we are a paradise for tourists who come to Formentera in search of beautiful beaches. Though obviously there are quite a few crowds at the moment due to how beautiful it is.

Monsul Beach, Almería

This beach Cabo de Gata Natural Park is famous for being featured in the Indiana Jones movie. But it is also a sandy area, full of peace in the middle of nature. We can get to the beach along the forest path from the city of San José, by car or on foot. It is definitely worth a visit.

Es Trenc Beach, Mallorca

This beach is located in the southeast of Mallorca, in protected natural area . This is one of those perfect beaches for relaxing, with clear water, clean sand and not too crowded even in high season. Definitely the perfect place to explore Mallorca. And it has a zone for those who wish to practice nudism.

Cala Macarelleta, Menorca

Cala Macarelleta is a smaller cove that is located next to the Macarella cove in Menorca. These are coves that are usually just as crowded during the high season but not the rest of the year, and are really beautiful places with their clear waters and rock formations.

Aiguablava beach (Catalonia)

Recognized as one of the most beautiful bays in the world, Cala Aiguablava is located 3 km from the center of ancient Begur, famous as a long-standing refuge of the Catalan elite seeking solitude. With a length of 100 m and a width of 25 m, this is a miniature paradise for lovers of relaxation away from civilization, diving enthusiasts and yachtsmen. At their service is a pretty yacht port, a diving center, a kayak rental and several luxurious seafood restaurants. Velvet white sand, light turquoise sea and views of the Begur castle, built in the 11th century, create a special romantic and relaxed atmosphere “for the elite”.

Granadella Beach (Valencia)

The pebbly Playa La Granadella is safely hidden in a secluded bay and has long been a secret treasure of the locals. However, the long serpentine leading here from Javea did not become an obstacle for the ubiquitous tourists: in the summer this wild corner is packed to capacity. The complete absence of waves, clear water, convenient access to the sea and stunning views attract vacationers from all over the world like a magnet. In addition, the surrounding rocks are indented with caves, which attracts a large number of divers and snorkelers. You can refresh yourself in cozy cafes specializing in fish dishes, and you can leave valuables while swimming in safe boxes arranged right in the beach umbrellas.

Macarella Beach (Balearic Islands)

The pearl of Menorca is regularly ranked among the ten most beautiful coasts of the planet. These are the famous Balearic Islands in their most beautiful manifestation: the perfect combination of soft and fine, like flour, sand and flawlessly smooth azure sea with a transparent bottom. Protected from the winds by sheer walls of rocks dotted with caves, the corner is famous among those who like to soak up the sun in solitude and nudists. During the season it fills up very quickly, so those who know recommend taking a sunbed with the first rays of the sun. If the mission is still failed, you can visit the nearby cove of Macarelleta, a mini-version of Macarella, no less impressive in its beauty.

Bologna Beach (Andalusia)

One of the last virgin corners of the province of Cadiz stretches for 4 kilometers in the Estrecho Natural Park, 20 minutes from Tarifa, next to the ruins of the ancient Roman settlement of Baelo Claudia. This stretch of coastline is especially exposed to the winds, attracting hundreds of surfers, and on windless days it’s perfect for families. Playa Bolonia, crowned with a giant dune 30 meters high and washed by the emerald waters of the ocean, is one of the most beautiful wild beaches in Spain. Picturesque pine trees, natural pools, a sea of fish taverns and whale watching excursions will make a lasting impression.

Maspalomas Beach (Canary Islands)

Wonderful Maspalomas, which is located at the southernmost point of the island of Gran Canaria, annually attracts thousands of tourists from different countries. It owes its popularity to its proximity to a natural landmark – the Dunes of Maspalomas, picturesquely stretched against the backdrop of the blue ocean. The beach strip occupies 4 km of land and flows smoothly into Playa del Inglés. Its “wild” character is expressed not only in virgin cleanliness and a large area for naturists, but also in a very modest infrastructure: there are no bars and cafes, and showers are installed only at the exit to the city. However, this does not bother vacationers – high ocean waves always attract surfers, and in the dunes you can ride a camel or sand sleigh.

Ses Illetas Beach (Balearic Islands)

Representing a long sandy spit, it belongs to the Ses Salines Natural Park of Formentera, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, which means constant care for its cleanliness and restrictions on the construction of restaurants, hotels, etc. An added bonus: the gentle slope and calm seas are ideal for families with toddlers.

Benijo Beach (Canary Islands)

Fascinating black sand and cold water, constant winds and high waves – the photogenicity and inconvenience of the wild Playa Benijo in Tenerife are approximately in equal proportions. Hidden in a protected natural area, Benijo has no lifeguards or other amenities, but is very popular with nudists and surfers, because it has the “right” waves, a flat entrance and a bottom without stones. For lovers of outdoor activities, there are playgrounds for playing basketball, volleyball, football and ping-pong; there is an interactive board that shows the air and water temperature, there are showers, safes, restaurants. Fine light sand, a gentle entrance to the sea and relative peace away from tourist spots attract holidaymakers of all ages, but especially families with small children.

Almost all of Spain is one huge open-air historical museum, surrounded by a ring of beautiful seashores and resort areas, many of which are considered the best in Europe.

Spain is a country with a long history. The most ancient cultural monuments in Spain belong to the Paleolithic era. These are rock paintings on the walls of the Altamira cave. From the architecture of the Iberians (ancient tribes that inhabited the Iberian Peninsula in the 1st millennium BC), there were ruins of gigantic stone walls in Tarragona. The Romans in Spain are mainly reminded of civil buildings – water pipes, bridges, aqueducts, amphitheatres, arches. One of the Roman bridges is perfectly preserved – Alcantara on the Tagus River. The bridge has six arches and a triumphal arch in the middle. Majestic are the ruins of the Roman amphitheaters in Merida and Sagunto for 6000 spectators and the arches in Medisaneli and Bar, built in 107-102 BC.

Arabs had a great influence on the development of medieval Spanish art and architecture. The Alhambra palace-fortress in Granada, the mosque in Cordoba, the La Giralda minaret in Seville are world famous.

Mosque-Cathedral in Cordoba (VIII-X centuries) – the largest mosque in the world after the famous Kaaba in Mecca. Its 19 naves with 32 arches occupy a significant area (175×140 m). A double monument – a mosque and a cathedral – testifies to the attempt of the Christian government to get rid of even a hint of Muslim influence. In 1236, after the capture of the city by Christians and the flight of Muslims to North Africa, King Ferdinand III ordered to turn it into a Christian temple. Were closed 19doors facing the courtyard, chapels were built along the inner walls of the building, the minaret was turned into a bell tower.

Alhambra (in Arabic “red”), a palace-fortress of the 13th century, is a miracle of Muslim architecture. Depending on the lighting, its walls and towers change color during the day. Particularly beautiful is the courtyard of Lviv, surrounded by columns of white marble. In the middle of the courtyard is a fountain. Its huge marble bowl rests on 12 lions. There are several magnificent halls in the palace: the Hall of Ambassadors with a huge dome made of cedar wood, the Royal Hall with golden lace arches in the form of stalactites, the Hall of Secrets with amazing acoustic effects.

La Giralda – the former minaret of the mosque, built by the Arabs in the XII century. The mosque was not preserved, and the minaret was turned into the bell tower of the cathedral. This is the most famous monument in Seville. Its silhouette is amazingly graceful. If you climb the bell tower, to a height of 97 m, then a beautiful view of the city opens from there.

Numerous medieval castles – paradors – have been preserved in Spain. Usually they are located in picturesque, quiet and cozy corners and provide excellent opportunities for both leisure and work. Now it is a whole complex of buildings and structures that combine strict architectural lines with modern interior rooms. Rooms are equipped with heating and air conditioning, TV, telephone and minibar. For lovers of outdoor activities in such buildings, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and gyms are necessarily provided.

Madrid – Prado National Museum of Painting and Sculpture, Museums of Modern Art and Natural Sciences, archaeological and ethnographic, of the Spanish people. Royal Palace 18th century and the Sabatini Gardens, the 18th century San Francisco el Grande Church, the Bueno Petiro Park with the zoo and the Botanical Garden, the residence of the monarch Zarzuela, the El Esprial monasteries, the Valley of the Fallen – a memorial to the victims of the civil war.

Barcelona – Maritime and Archaeological Museums, Museums of Catalan Art and Pablo Picasso, Montjuic Fortress, Sagrada Familia, Church of San Pablo del Campo – 914 AD, Gothic Cathedral of Santa Junania.

Zaragoza – La Seo Cathedral 12-16th century, El Pilar Cathedral 17th century, residence of the Aragonese kings Castillo de la Alyaferis.

Spain is considered the largest “hunting” country in Europe. The largest hunting reserve – Sakha (177 thousand hectares) occupies almost the entire eastern half of the province of Santander in the Cantabrian mountains (north of the country). In the beech and oak forests of this reserve, bear, wild boar, roe deer, wolf, chamois are hunted, and among birds – partridge and snipe.

One of the most beautiful and richest in flora and fauna hunting reserves in Spain – Somiedo (88 thousand hectares) – is located in the mountains of the northern province of Oviedo. Its forests consist of a wide variety of broad-leaved species. Bear, wolf, fox, wild boar, roe deer, chamois, polecat, marten, hare are found here, among birds – capercaillie, partridge, snipe, wild pigeon, quail.

In Spain, the Sierra de Cazorla, crossed by the Guadalquivir River, is considered a real miracle of nature in terms of the richness of species and the beauty of landscapes. On its right bank, in the lower reaches, there is the Koto-Donyana nature reserve. The landscape of marisma is protected here – brackish-water coastal swamps of the southern type (reminiscent of the lower reaches of the Volga) with exceptionally rich flora and fauna. Colonies of waterfowl are especially numerous: ducks, geese, flamingos, white storks. A huge colony of herons lives here. The semi-desert southeastern regions of Spain are considered one of the most convenient places to study the life of scorpions and tarantulas. Chameleons live in the south of the country.

Climate:

Spain is divided into three climatic zones:

  • North of the country (from Galicia to Catalonia) – influenced by the Atlantic Ocean. The area is characterized by mild, wet winters and moderately warm summers.

  • Southeast coast (Andalusia and Extremadura) – Mediterranean-type climate with exceptionally mild, short winters and dry, hot summers. This area is characterized by a fairly low level of precipitation, falling mainly in autumn and winter.

  • Central Plateau – here the climate is sharply continental, with significant differences between day and night temperatures (in the center of Spain in summer the temperature during the day rises to +30 degrees, and at night it drops to +15 degrees). Summers are hot and dry, winters are dry and cold.

Despite the fact that the Iberian Peninsula is surrounded by sea on almost all sides, in its central part the influence of water masses on climatic conditions is vanishing. Mountain ranges stretching along almost the entire coastline protect the interior of the peninsula from external influences. In general, the country is dominated by a subtropical climate of the Mediterranean type, although in its pure form it can only be stated in the south and east of the country. The influence of the continental climatic zone increases with distance from the coast. On the coast, where the sea acts as a huge reservoir of solar energy, the climate is very mild. On the Mediterranean coast, the average winter temperature is +17°C, +19°C degrees (the thermometer rarely drops below +10°C). In summer the temperature does not rise above + 32°C. The beach season here lasts from June to October.

In Castile and La Mancha, located on the central plateau, the weather is very hot from May to September, and in winter squally, piercing, cold winds blow here. The climate of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria and Basque Country is characterized by high humidity – it rains here literally all year round. At the same time, the south and southeast of Spain often suffer from drought.

In the highlands of Spain during the winter months there are often frosts, heavy snow falls. In the Pyrenees (Andorra), the mountains of the Sierra Nevada (Andalusia) and the Sierra de Guadar Rama (near Madrid), ski resorts operate all year round.
