Tenerife: Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Tenerife

Where is Tenerife?

Although Tenerife is an autonomous region of Spain, it actually lies just 300 km off the west coast of Africa, thus giving it a unique blend of Spanish culture and African sun.

Is Tenerife in the EU?

Yes, as a part of Spain, Tenerife is very firmly within the EU and its currency is the Euro. However, the island has VAT free status which means it falls outside of EU Customs allowances.

When is the best time to visit Tenerife?

Although Tenerife has low seasons, it has no ‘off season’ and places are generally open all year. The visitor trend is for Northern Europeans to favour the winter months in order to escape the cold of home and for Spanish mainlanders to favour the summer months in order to escape the heat of the cities and plains. If you like it quiet, try May, early June, and early December.

What is the weather like?

Tenerife has a sub tropical climate which means that sunshine is its default setting all year round and you can sunbathe no matter what month you visit. Summers are hot, but not too hot with average temperatures around 26°C and cooling trade winds to keep the island in the comfortable zone. Winters are pleasantly mild with an average of 19°C.

Is there a time difference?

Unlike mainland Spain, Tenerife is on Greenwich Mean Time and moves its clocks forward in spring and back in the fall, so if you’re coming from the UK, there is no time difference.

Can I climb Mount Teide?

Yes, provided you have the stamina, anyone can climb Mount Teide but you need a permit to reach the summit for which you can apply online. Most people prefer to take the cable car to within 200 metres of Spain’s highest peak but those who wish to plant their virtual flag on the top can do so either by climbing from the base of the mountain at Montaña Blanca or from the cable car exit.

The ultimate reward goes to those who begin from Montaña Blanca, stay the night at the Altavista Refuge and then climb to the summit to witness daybreak over the archipelago, for which you don’t need a permit provided you return before the first cable car of the day.

My cruise docks at Santa Cruz for one day. What’s the best way to spend my limited time?

The city of Santa Cruz has many attractions including botanical gardens, museums, splendid architecture, great shopping and excellent cafés and restaurants. It’s also very compact to explore on foot so get hold of a walking guide and get to know Tenerife’s capital city.

If you’re looking for a beach, jump on the 910 bus at the port and head to Tenerife’s most beautiful sun, sea and sand spot, the golden, tropical paradise of Las Teresitas. If you want to get to Mount Teide, pick up a local excursion but expect to spend in total up to three hours of your time travelling.

Is Tenerife safe?

Yes, Tenerife has a very low crime rate and is a very safe place to visit and to live in. There aren’t any ‘no-go’ areas and streets are safe to wander in at night as well as during the day. You should nevertheless exercise common sense, particularly in the main tourist resorts, by not leaving valuables unattended on the beach or in your hire car.

I’ve heard the north is cloudy and wet while the south is sunny and dry…is that true?

Generally speaking, the north of Tenerife enjoys the same idyllic climate as the south but is a little cooler and cloudier, most noticeably during the summer months of July and August, and it does get rainfall in the winter, mainly in the months of November and March.

Is the water safe to drink?

Yes, but because of the heavy treatment of tap water, your stomach may not be used to the additives. Most visitors choose to drink the bottled water instead. But if you’re out walking and find a water fountain in a picnic zone or a rural village, stock up – it’s fresh mountain water and delicious.

Do I need to hire a car to see the island?

No, there is a very good bus service – Titsa – which has good coverage over most of the island, is clean and reasonably reliable. But some journeys can take a long time, particularly in tourist areas where every little hamlet is served, and some places are too tricky to get to by bus so ultimately, car hire gives you the most flexibility and freedom. It’s cheap too.

Are there cockroaches?

It’s important to recognise that Tenerife is a sub-tropical destination and inevitably you may encounter the occasional cockroach but they are largely confined to the tourist areas around large bins and of course are only nocturnal. You can also find mosquitoes in late summer, particularly around fresh water sources such as irrigation tanks but generally speaking, Tenerife is largely a pest-free zone. ..

Are there timeshare touts?

…speaking of pests, all the big resorts on Tenerife have a few touts who will try to get you to a timeshare sales venue via scratch cards. A polite refusal is all you need to keep them at bay. The same goes for the street vendors with their ‘designer’ sunglasses and watches.

Is it expensive to eat out on Tenerife?

No. As in most of Spain, eating out is an integral part of the culture and can be done for as little as seven or eight Euros for a three course menu del dïa and beer at €1 – €1.50 a pint. For those who have more exacting culinary tastes, Tenerife has some excellent restaurants serving both local and International cuisine.

Is it easy to get work for a season?

Pre-Brexit, yes. Now, not so much… if you’re going to do it legally!

Excellent cruise

10+ Cruises • Age 70s

We are regular Fred. Olsen cruisers and this was one of the best experiences we’ve had with them. Let’s get the negative out of the way first – charter flights with Monarch are never good news! So little leg room. We had a late flight, arriving at the Braemar in Tenerife at about 9.00 p.m., and we had to load our own luggage onto the coach and off at the other end. Not a good start. Our late …

We have just returned home from a lovely cruise on Fred Olsen’s Braemar to Cape Verde, The Gambia and Senegal and fully understand why people travel more than once on this ship. We certainly will! Having previously travelled on P and O, Princess cruises, Holland and America, Ocean Village and Thomson we found that “Fred” comes up trumps!

A little disappointing

Review for Braemar to Africa

Maudash

6-10 Cruises • Age 80s

Fred Olsen flew us to Tenerife via Monarch from Manchester. We couldn’t book seats in advance as there was some kind of tension between Monarch and Fred Olsen. The Monarch plane was appalling. Extra seats had been installed and there was no leg room and no air supply for some seats as they were out of sync with the new seating. You could book extra leg room on a few rows on check-in for £30 each …

2-5 Cruises • Age 70s

Having just been on a cruise with Fred starting at Tenerife to Cape Verdi and west Africa an back to Gran Canaria and Fuertaventura I am going to give it 5 star rating. The ship is good. It is not as glitzy as some but is neat, tidy and easy to move around. Cabin was clean and comfortable and adequate although not oversized. We were on deck 4 outside with a window and it was very convenient and …

10+ Cruises • Age 60s

My husband and I are veteran cruisers and this was our second time on FOCL’s Braemar. We have been on all the ‘Fred’ ships and the Braemar is my own personal favourite as she is just the right size to make a more personal experience.
We were allocated balcony cabin 7050 and this was perfectly fine. Clean, comfortable and quiet, with twin beds and two chairs, a sunlounger and a table on the …

We have just returned from our Cape Verde cruise on board the Braemar, this was our second with Fred Olsen, the last one on the Boudicca. West Africa Cruise – First Timer

Review for Braemar to Africa

Gizmosmum1

First Time Cruiser • Age 50s

We hadn’t cruised before, being under 50 we really thought that cruising was for older people. That’s certainly true for the Braemar but many guests told us about other cruise lines who cater for a younger audience so I’m happy to stand corrected.

My husband is terrified of water and to get him to go I had to book a cabin with a balcony above a lifeboat! Within a couple of days he was quite …

Finding African influences in T Canary Islands gastronomy

When we first started travel writing social media was a term of the near future, travel writers didn’t inhabit cyberspace, and blogs hadn’t yet become mainstream. Subsequently, there were far fewer sources of detailed destination information online. When researching, we spotted very quickly that much of the information we read came from the same limited sources. Information lifted from guidebooks peppered numerous websites. Some of it was good, some of it wasn’t. When the source got something wrong, that same mistake was repeated over and over and over again. One example related to which movies were filmed on Tenerife. For years travel guides (both in print and in human form) incorrectly informed visitors that Star Wars and Planet of the Apes were filmed in Teide National Park. As a result, when we researched the places we visited on Tenerife, as well as using other sources, we popped into libraries to shore up our own experiences/perceptions with locally archived facts, history and anecdotes.

Film crew in Teide National Park.

The travel writing world has changed in the intervening 15 years. There are now, on the face of it, multitudinous sources available at the press of a button. But the same old patterns still exist. Many of the travel articles you read about Tenerife, or any destination for that matter, will not be original. Too many will be written by people who haven’t visited the place they’ve written about or experienced the things they write about. The information included will have been gleamed from elsewhere. It’s not difficult to spot this as similar sounding sentences pop up all over the place. One common one is that Tenerife and Canarian gastronomy is a mixture of Spanish, African, and South American cuisine. You’ll see this referenced in numerous travel articles about Canarian food, and every time I read it I know the words which follow have been penned by someone who doesn’t really know Canarian cuisine.

South American street food, found even in small towns on Tenerife.

Sure, there are many dishes on the menus in traditional Canarian restaurants which are common on the Spanish mainland, and the South American influences are there to be found as well. But what about Africa? What exactly are the local concoctions which might have diners remarking “that’s just like that dish we ate in Essaouira/Banjul/Dakar/ Mindelo…”?

A Cape Verdean feast, for two.

It’s one of those Tenerife travel ‘facts’ churned out over an over again. The island’s markets and supermarkets might share some of the same fish, fruit, pulses, and vegetables found in the markets of the lands not so far away to the east. There might be messy ‘everything but the kitchen sink’ stews and busy fish and seafood rice concoctions, but you’ll struggle to find dishes on menus which reflect the ones eaten in West and North West Africa.

Migas and fish in Andalusia.

As well as having notched up god knows how many Canarian restaurants on all the islands over the years, we’ve eaten at traditional restaurants in Morocco, The Gambia, and Cape Verde – all African countries which are relatively near to the Canaries. Yet, in Canarian restaurants we haven’t seen variations of the likes of Moroccan tagines, Cape Verdean cachupas, or West African spicy jollof rice on any menus. In fact, we tasted far more evidence of Moorish influences in the food we ate in villages in Andalusia; unsurprisingly, given the Moors ruled parts of Spain for 800 years. In the centre of Lisbon, thanks to links with former colonies, West African food is relatively common, and certainly far easier to find than it is in the Canary Islands.

Spicy and creamy African cuisine in Lisbon.

Despite the proximity of the African continent, the likelihood the islands’ original inhabitants came from North Africa, and the superficial claims of many a travel article/website, Canarian gastronomy surprisingly doesn’t bear much resemblance to that found on the fascinating land to the east at all.

So far, most of the above is deduced from our personal experiences, and on the ground research.

Tagine in Marrakech.

But talking of research, let’s bring this full circle. Like I mentioned at the start, we like to confirm our own findings/perceptions by checking them against credible sources. The food & drink section of our The Real Tenerife guidebook is fuelled not only by our own experiences but by info gleaned from numerous interviews over the years with farmers, vineyard owners, specialist producers, and local chefs etc.

Cachupa for breakfast in Sao Vicente, Cape Verde.

In this case that credible source is a West African organisation dedicated to educating people in the Canary Islands about the ‘richness’ of the culture, life, and gastronomy of the lands they represent. In a document specifically about gastronomy they write this:

“One of those multiple riches is gastronomy, one of the great unknowns to Spanish society.”

Tellingly, one of their aims is to ‘bring the cuisine of the continent to their neighbour’.

They wouldn’t have to do that if it was already there.

Nuestra Señora de África Market – Barceló Experiences

Due to its pink colour-scheme and neo-Colonial appearance, the Nuestra Señora de África Market, better known as La Recova, is impossible to miss on a stroll through Santa Cruz de Tenerife. In fact, it should be included in all tourist walking routes owing to the fact that it is a historic building where you can get a real feel for daily life in the city. It is also perfect for discovering local produce, as you can taste the island’s most authentic flavours right on the premises. Above all, make the most of your visit to acquaint yourself with delicious Canarian cheese, wine, mojo sauces and tropical fruit. Over 200 traders await to talk to you about their exclusive produce. Is there a better place to find a culinary souvenir to take home?

How the Nuestra Señora de África Market began

The market opened its doors in 1943 and is heir to the former nineteenth-century poultry market situated on the other side of the Santos Ravine. In the beginning the market was an essential space to come to for buying food, not just in Santa de Cruz de Tenerife but for the whole island. Its facilities combined ordinary retail trade as well as wholesale, an important role that it maintained until 1974.

Free cancellation

This was the year in which the second life of Nuestra Señora de África Market began as it said farewell to those golden years by creating a separate wholesale market, Mercatenerife, where much of its trade was to move. Although commercial activity was reduced, it continued until 1985, when it started to become apparent that food habits were changing among citizens, as they began to opt for other type of shops and larger establishments. The sale of fresh produce began to drop and the number of supermarkets, which took business away from La Recova, started to increase. The repercussions were soon apparent and stands began to close (30% are empty). For a decade the situation hardly changed and few locals call for the traditional market model.

In this critical state of affairs, a voice from within the market emerged advocating self-management of the space, a proposal that was accepted by the City Hall. From then on, Nuestra Señora de África Market began to manage the facilities itself whilst trying to adapt to new times. As a non-profit cooperative, it safeguarded its interests and assessed new ways to make the space profitable. Today this same model still persists; a model that has been recognised with various awards, such as the Gold Medal from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Gold Medal from the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

High-speed construction

The history of the market’s construction is fascinating, as it was only possible thanks to the donation of one and a half million pesetas by the capital general Ricardo Serrador Santés, who put forward the money with two conditions: that it be built in a maximum of six months and that it be overseen by a representative of the Economic Authority of the Canary Islands. Although it was finished in 18 months, the result couldn’t have worked out any better as a striking building—declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 2004—was eventually built. The market’s main entrance is a large archway spanning eight metres, leading into an interior that is built around three courtyards, which are connected via porticoed walkways. The market was named Nuestra Señora de África [Our Lady of Africa] in memory of the saint of the captain general’s wife.

In the beginning, produce had to be sold on the same day as it didn’t have refrigerators. Fish was conserved with ice until 1957 when the first cold storage room was installed in the semi-basement. The basement, which initially served as a warehouse, was integrated into the market three years later due to demand from traders.

Today the ground floor houses the fishmongers, 16 shops selling varied produce, and the car park (free for customers). The rest of the stands and a children’s play area are situated on the first floor. Next to the market is the Rambla Azul, where books, bazaar items and artisan products are sold.

When in the market look out for sculptures such as The Milklady and Homage to Chicharreros (the name given to the inhabitants of Tenerife), and a clock mechanism from the late twentieth century.

Daily shopping and gourmet food tasting

The Nuestra Señora de África Market offers a practical service to residents of the capital of Tenerife, who come to do their daily shopping. At the market they can find fruit, vegetables, poultry, preserves, charcuterie, cakes and pastries, baked goods, salted items and meat and fish, among others. The flower stalls, situated in the central courtyard, provide a touch of colour and aroma, making it an even more enjoyable experience.

In addition to shopping, you can also savour the best gourmet food tastings at the market. This trend, which is so widespread across Europe, has now arrived at the market. For travellers it is an excellent opportunity to sample the finest produce that the Canary Islands have to offer all under one roof. You can’t leave the market without trying a barraquito (a coffee liqueur) or papas arrugadas con mojo picón (‘wrinkled’ potatoes served with a spicy sauce). Tenerife’s cuisine is truly delicious, so be sure to make the most of the occasion.

In addition to enjoying a walk through the market and grabbing a few bites to eat, it’s also possible to attend special workshops that are organised regularly such as ‘La Recova Nights’ and ‘The Flavours of La Recova’.

Places of Power: Tenerife Island – Canary Islands or traces of the legendary Atlantis

It is rare to find mention of Tenerife and the Canary Islands as a Place of Power, because basically they are known as a paradise on Earth, as about islands created specifically for a beach holiday and, nevertheless, they fascinate and attract millions of people from all over the world with their mystery and beauty of legends. And not by chance. Someone inexplicably falls in love with these places, they give strength to someone and replenish energy, but many do not even realize the incredible nature of the attractiveness of this corner of the globe and simply strive to come here again and again. Although our journey began as a purely touristic one, either due to the peculiarities of perception, or thanks to the enticing and mysterious spirit of the island, it very quickly grew into something more. Judge for yourself…

What is the Canaries

The Canarian archipelago includes 7 large and several small islands. Each of them is unusual and interesting in its own way, but the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are the most attractive for holidays.

canary archipelago

Although the Canary Islands are located at a distance of 1200 km from Spain, this is one of its autonomous provinces. They are located in the Atlantic Ocean, just 100 km from the coast of Africa. But there is no African hell here: the Canary Islands have a mild spring climate that allows you to enjoy your vacation at any time of the year without suffering from excessive heat.

There is no African heat in the Canary Islands

With its even, mild and dry climate, the Canary Islands are never too hot or cold. The average monthly air temperature does not fall below 21C (December – February) and does not rise above 30C (July – August).

The water temperature in the coastal zone fluctuates slightly around 20C (February – 19C, August – 24C), so you can swim in the ocean all year round.

The history of Tenerife is more like a legend

In Western Europe, the existence of the Canary archipelago has been known since ancient times. In the Greek myths described by Homer and Hesiod, the islands are described as “the abode of the blessed and the garden of the Hesperides.”
Most likely, the islands owe their inexpressible energy power and attractiveness precisely to their connection with Atlantis. The traces of its presence on the islands have been preserved since its inception to this day. Take at least the indigenous inhabitants of the islands. When the conquistadors came to this fertile land, people called the Guanches lived on the islands, which in the local language meant “son of Tenerife”.

Tenerife, like other islands of the Canary archipelago, arose on the site of Atlantis that existed more than 12 million years ago, which was buried under the water column when the hitherto dormant volcano woke up.

Guanches – indigenous people of the Canary archipelago or Atlantis

The origin of the Guanches is lost in legend. Tall, fair-haired Guanches are a solid tangle of mysteries and contradictions, just like their whole history. Who they are, where and how they got to the archipelago, no one knows. The Portuguese, and then the Spaniards, the French, having discovered the Canary Islands, expected to meet here with the African population, but they found a Caucasoid type of people, moreover, similar not to southern, but to northern Europeans: Swedes, Pomeranian Slavs . ..

Islanders, as a selection, tall blond with white skin. Women were distinguished by a wonderful figure and soft hair of flaxen, red and chestnut colors. In character and temperament, the Guanches also resembled Europeans. At the same time, they walked in skins and ate the meat of dogs. Despite some differences between the inhabitants of individual islands, they were all similar to each other and spoke dialects of the same language.

It would be most correct to assume that the Guanches came to the islands from the sea. But how? They didn’t have boats. And they were so ignorant of navigation that they were horrified at the mere thought of sailing or rowing from one island to another. However, not like boats, the Guanches did not make boats, or even rafts. Fish were caught from the shore on a hook or shoals were driven into nets by hand. But the ancestors of these people somehow ended up on the islands?! True, the Guanches swam well, but this does not explain this riddle, because the islands of the archipelago closest to Africa – Fuerteventura and Lanzarote – are still 60 miles away from it.

On the one hand, the Guanches managed to 15 century. to reach the Neolithic (Stone Age), on the other hand, they had a script that has not been deciphered so far (unless, of course, the inscriptions found in the caves in an unknown language belong to the Guanches). There is no other people in history that would have created writing while still at the Neolithic stage. Well, is it really impossible not to agree that they actually come from a real-life Atlantis. Although the ancient Canarians lived in the Stone Age, their social organization was quite complex. Each clan was ruled by a monarch (mensei) and a “parliament” – a council of elders. The Guanches did not know metal, mummified the dead and used paint to decorate bodies in the form of clay stamps. Oddly enough, exactly the same stamps were found in Mexico.

However, a rather long digression into the history of the Guanches should not confuse you, because the mystery of this people is part of the general spirit of the Canary Islands.

How to describe paradise and the feeling of being in it?

We must be honest and say that for many, the original purpose of visiting the Canary Islands was still a vacation that will seem incredibly wonderful in a cold and unfriendly November, December, January, February or March with April. Indeed, after arriving on the islands and feeling a strong temperature drop, your whole being will plunge into a soft feather bed of bliss bestowed by the fertile nature of the island:

  • gentle sun and ocean in the south,
  • incredibly clean, fresh, iodine-filled air,
  • mighty rocks, attracting with their powerful energy,
  • and of course the incredibly blissful and friendly feeling that reigns throughout the island.

Very soon, filled with the gentle energy of the sun, you will realize that the traditional entertainment that is offered in abundance to tourists on the island does not inspire you, and, as if hearing a call, you will begin to make a list of the mysterious places of power of the Canary Islands.

Personal list of the mysterious places of power of the Canary Islands

We recommend that you first of all visit the “barranco” (gorge) of Masca. To get to this curious place, you will certainly have to drive along incredibly beautiful mountain serpentines one and a half cars wide and breathe in the cleanest air coming from the ocean.

Masca Gorge, Tenerife

We must immediately make a reservation that if you, as a diligent tourist, are going to walk the entire 600-meter route leading from a small village where the descendants of pirates live to the ocean coast, then you, of course, will arrive at the place early in the morning and be able to enjoy the views , 2.5 hour descent and no less expensive ascent.

Mask Gorge: an incredibly beautiful mountain serpentine 1.5 cars wide

However, you can enjoy truly powerful sensations from contact with the energy of a huge tectonic fault if you walk, stopping at every step and trying not to lose sight of any of the relief of the island that opens up to our eyes. If you arrived at the place rather late, then remember that there are about 4 hours of darkness left and, therefore, you will not have enough time for a full descent and ascent. But as it turns out later, this is the most favorable time to immerse yourself in the surrounding nature in relative peace (without crowds past tourists scurrying up and down). But there is something to see in the gorge.

Either because of excessive impressionability and wild fantasy, or because of incredible sensitivity to all kinds of influences, you will feel someone’s presence all the way. As if someone is watching your every move with a keen eye. At the same time, this feeling is not hostile …. rather, it makes it clear that you are obliged to obey the incredible power that comes from these places. And having gone deep about halfway through the stunningly beautiful waterfalls, you will finally find a place for a halt and a gorgeous photo session.

View of the waterfall from the bottom of the Maska gorge

This is where all your feelings will really open up. It is impossible to convey the overwhelming feeling when you are at the depths of the Maska Gorge, even if you have visited the mountains more than once, and you really have something to compare with. Being alone with nature, one has only to listen…. Mountains always create a feeling of greatness and inviolability, but there really is something here …. as if along the bottom of the gorge there is a thin line between the worlds in time and space, and vigilant Guanches guards tirelessly watch and protect every visitor.

In general, I must admit that the island really does not feel the passage of time and everything is filled with peace and grace. This is truly heaven on earth! ))))

Pico del Teide

The central place of all legends and the place of worship of the Guanches is, of course, Pico del Teide (Mount Teide). The mountain is considered the highest point not only in the Canary Islands, but also in Spain. Thanks to Teide, Tenerife is called the “two-faced island”. It divides the island into southern and northern parts. The south is rocky and sunny with many coves, the cleanest beaches of black volcanic sand, the north, on the contrary, is buried in fantastic elven forests and attracts all lovers of secluded relaxation.

Mount Teide – height – 3718 m.

Tenerife car rental experience

In general, if we talk about choosing the right vehicle to move around the island, in order to feel the energy of the island yourself and truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the island’s unique places of power, you need to travel by car. An incredibly pleasant feeling is left not only by the nature of the island, but also with what care the inhabitants keep and protect it.

Stopping at numerous miradors and slowly climbing your way to the volcano, you will surely appreciate the sophistication of the transition from the desert coast in the south, through the belt of misty clouds, where the majestic Canary pine grows in abundance, and to the sunny Las Cañadas del Teide, the national park of Spain . Well, where else can you go through the clouds like this on a cool gloomy day, rise to the very sun and feel life itself in all its love and beauty!

Canarian pine

Canary pine is worth mentioning separately. She, like many things on the island, is unique. Over the years of living in such a difficult place to live, the tree has developed an amazing property – it has become fireproof. Even if the tree burns by 80%, it will recover very quickly. Thanks to these unique properties, Canary pine is considered the most valuable building material.

Teide Experience

Throughout the trip to the Teide peak, many tourists, according to their stories, did not leave the feeling of happiness and a sense of the sacrament that was about to happen. And everyone who has been there and climbed the funicular to the very top will surely understand these impressions. All the way to the volcano, you can think about the history of Atlantis, the origin of Teide, its purpose and the secrets kept under the layers of volcanic rock.

When you get to the El Teleferico lift, you can say with confidence that meeting with a powerful volcano will change your life and significantly renew your physical, mental and emotional body!

Having risen to the level of 3555 m on the lift, you are so close to the center of a powerful column of positive energy, beating from the very heart of the volcano into space. And this energy permeates you, breaks through all energy plugs, cleanses of everything superficial that interferes with the free movement of energy, makes your own Qi flow gently and evenly and fills you with pure vitality, a powerful positive charge … and this is only part of the message that was received on top of the mountain…and there is still so much to do.

As soon as you come into contact with this pure stream, you begin to return to the origins of yourself, as if the same light appears again at the end of the tunnel, which guides you through life and gives you strength to search for your true destiny . .. .. and everything immediately falls into place.

It is impossible to describe the desire to fly and the complete feeling of freedom outside of time and space, gravity and consciousness that arises on top of a mountain. This is how he is – a powerful master, like a loving father accepting his sons and giving them a piece of “original” life…

Incredibly difficult to describe sensations, but we hope not to bore you in our immersion in inner sensations. In addition, we need to move on in our story, because there are still so many places of power on this tiny island in the ocean!

The next stop on the map of Tenerife was Benijo Beach.

Esperanza Forest

Through the forest of Esperanza (Bosque de la Esperanza) runs the TF-24 highway from Mount Teide to the town of La Laguna. The Elven Forest of Hope (as translated from Spanish la Esperanza) is located on the northwestern slope of the Teide. Canarian pines are being replaced by fragrant eucalyptus trees with “peeled” trunks. Ah, what a fragrance in this forest!

Esperanza Forest seems close in spirit and for some reason resembles Siberian pine forests. And the energetically viscous air filled with the aromas of eucalyptus seemed intoxicating and immediately wanted to stay in it longer. But unfortunately, many do not notice these beauties, but rush to drive it only along the highway, watching its amazing beauty from the car window.

Description of the experience of walking in the Esperanza Forest

As if spellbound, we stopped the car and, having parked, went for a walk in the forest. For some reason, the elven queen stood before my eyes all the time: beautiful and mysteriously beckoning travelers into the thicket of the forest. I really wanted to sit down in meditation and, having united with the spirits of the forest, go on a journey in search of the secrets of the universe, but we were driven by time, or rather, the inexorably approaching darkness. How I want to be there right now!

But at such a walking pace, you may not make it to your destination – a small village called Benijo – on this day, so you should hurry up or postpone the trip the next day.

Where to go on your last day in Tenerife

On the last full day of your stay in Tenerife, take the TF-1 highway to the capital of Tenerife – Santa Cruz, and then through the Anaga ridge and the forest of Las Mercedes along the pass to Taganana.

Les Las Mercedes

Initiates know that in the preglacial period, when dinosaurs inhabited the earth, the entire territory of modern Europe was covered with subtropical evergreen relict forests. Such forests are preserved today only in the Canaries, the Azores and Madeira. The prehistoric forest is really beautiful and doesn’t look like Esperanza at all. However, these two amazing and completely different forests evoke their own associations and sensations for everyone. Forest Las Mercedes is a completely different property. Here the air is much lighter and a walk through the forest is more likely to meet another unique plant than to meet an energetically charged place. However, as mentioned earlier, everything on this island has an extremely positive charge, and the keepers carefully protect everyone and everyone that falls into their domain.

Having passed the wonderful forests of Tenerife along the northwestern slope through the Taganana Pass, we headed for a small village called Benijo. Some time ago this place was not so popular, but now its popularity is steadily growing among lovers of ecotourism.

You can arrive early in the morning, park your rented car at some small cafe and go down a long equipped staircase along the rocks to the beach, which was the ultimate goal of traveling to this part of the island. Benijo beach (Benijo) is not particularly suitable for swimming, because it is not located in the bay, but almost at the junction of land and the raging ocean. This is evidenced by the inscription standing at the descent to the wild beach.

Benijo beach

If you arrive at the time we wrote about above, then on this beach you will be lucky to meet only local hunters for the inhabitants of the sea.

Once on the beach, you can decompose the numerous belongings that you brought with you, and, having a snack, get to know the ocean better. I must say that the power of the open ocean is impressive and mesmerizing at once. Only when you go waist-deep into foaming, seething water and barely keeping your feet from the blows of huge waves that come one after another and, retreating, tighten with incredible force, you feel like a tiny sliver in a free element, whose name is the Atlantic Ocean.

Esotericists say that two energies are mixed here: the energy of the ocean and the energy of the volcano. On the ocean shore on the beach of Benijo, you seem to find yourself in a parallel world. Everything mundane becomes insignificant and you find yourself in two worlds at the same time. The feeling of freedom is combined with the state of searching for the meaning of existence….

Such a variety of places of power and pearls of natural beauty can rarely be found on such a small corner of the land. It’s a pity that a lot can’t be seen and felt during these 2 weeks. But there are still mysterious pyramids in the Guimar area. In the southeast of Tenerife, not far from the famous resort of Las Americas Tenerife, a 5-minute drive from the city of Candelaria with its famous basilica dedicated to the Black Madonna, and half an hour from the capital of the island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is another place of power Canary Islands – Pyramids of Guimar. Here is a complex of ancient pyramids, which are still shrouded in mystery for archaeologists.
