How to Successfully Apply for a Visa for Spain
Applying for a visa for Spain and getting your head around its entry requirements might seem complicated. But there’s no need to get stressed – we’ve created a step-by-step guide to make the visa application process easier for you. So preparing for your trip to Tenerife will be a piece of cake.
Do I need a visa for Spain?
As Tenerife is a part of Spain, EU citizens can visit the island without any restrictions. Passport-holders from Iceland, Norway and Switzerland also don’t need visas.
If you don’t have a passport from one of the above-mentioned countries, then you will need to apply for a visa. There are some citizens however who can stay in Spain for 90 days within a 6 months time frame without a visa (check the list below if your country qualifies for that).

What kind of visa types are there?
The most common visa for travelling to Spain is for the tourist visa, also referred to as Schengen visa, which is valid for the whole Schengen area. Most countries of the EU (22 of them) are part of the Schengen area – as are Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. It’s an area without border-controls and they have a common visa policy. With a Schengen visa, you can travel to all 26 Schengen member states – not only to Spain.
If you come to Spain for one of our language courses or for a digital marketing course you can either apply for a Schengen-visa or for a student visa.
For courses which last up to 90 days, a tourist visa is the right choice for you. If the course lasts longer, then you have to apply for either a short-term or a long-term student visa.
There are other types of visa, like working visa or non-lucrative visa which might be relevant for Digital Nomads who want to stay in Spain for a longer period of time.
Two types of student visa
1) Short term student visa: The short-term student visa allows you to stay in Spain between 91 and 180 days. Please note that the short-term student visa cannot be renewed once you are in Spain. You would have to apply for a new visa in your home country.
2) Long-term student visa: If you want to stay in Spain for more than 180 days, you can apply for a long-term student visa. Once you enter Spain on a long-term student visa, you have to apply for a student resident card within one month after your arrival. You have to go to the Immigration Department branch (Oficina de Extranjeros) to do this.
With a student visa, you can take language courses, university degrees, training and research without receiving a salary from the University. In case you receive a salary you should apply for Residence Visa with Work Permit Exemption. The student visa allows you to apply for a work-permit and, with this permit, you will be allowed to work part-time. This has to be compatible with your studies, of course.
If you want to work in Spain you must get a working visa. Before you can apply for that though, you need a work permit. You cannot apply for a work permit on your own though. It’s something your employer has to do.

How to Apply for a Schengen or Student Visa?
Get in touch with the Spanish Embassy or Consulate closest to you. Make sure you have the information about the required visa type on hand as you book an appointment. If you seek a tourist or student visa, try to get an appointment at least four weeks before your trip is scheduled to begin.
At this appointment, you have to personally hand in all the required documents (see below which documents are required for a tourist visa, a student visa or a working visa).
The processing of the visa, which takes place after you’ve handed in all required documents, usually takes in about 2 to 4 weeks.
What to bring for your tourist visa application
-
- Completed and signed Application form for Schengen Visa
- A passport which is valid for at least 3 months beyond the completion of the trip. There has to be at least two blank pages left for the visa
- A copy of the passport
- 1 recent colour photo in passport format
- Flight documents that confirm your travel dates and the dates of your stay. We recommend that you provide a confirmed flight itinerary or reservation so you won’t have to incur cancellation costs in the event that your visa is denied
- Invitation letter from the person who is inviting you or information about your place of residence during your stay – such as booking documents of the hotel / address of accommodation
- A cover letter stating the purpose of your visit to Spain and itinerary (i. e. a letter from our school stating that you study spanish here)
If you are a student: A no-objections letter from your school or university confirming your leave, along with details about what you are studying and the year when you will finish your studies - If you are employed or self-employed: A document which proves employment or self-employment (issued by place of employment or finance office and addressed to the Spanish Embassy). Also, a no-objections letter from your employer confirming your leave, your position in the company and the termination date of your contract. If self-employed, you need a copy of your income tax return. These documents show that you will not overstay your visa and, though it is optional in many cases, it’s a good idea to have it since it will increase your chances of a successful application
- Bank statements of the last three months and the balance of your bank account – which is supposed to prove that you have enough money to care for yourself during the time of your stay. A minimum of € 538 per month is required. Cash is not acknowledged as proof. The last three paychecks have to be visible in the bank statements. If you are supported by your spouse or parents, you have to present a proof of your civil status (marriage certificate or birth certificate) as well as the latest two bank statements of the person who is supporting you.
- The fee for the visa in cash (the fee might vary depending on the country in which you are applying) and will be around € 60. You will find detailed information about the requested amount on the website of the Spanish Embassy of your country.

Don’t forget: All documents have to be presented in Spanish or English.

Spain Visa Application in a Nutshell
Plan way in advance
Getting your visa for Spain can take up to 6 weeks. You should never rely on the estimated processing times, however. Try to get an appointment at the Spanish Embassy at least 6 weeks before your departure.
Make sure you have all requested documents with you
Before heading to the Spanish Embassy, you should double-check that you have all the necessary documents with you. The list of requested papers for a visa to Spain is long. You can guarantee that the responsible administrators will thoroughly check that everything is there.
Since it is so hard to get an appointment at a Spanish Embassy, you do not want to be sent away again.
Double-check for correct spelling in all your documents
If there are spelling errors in your application, your visa might get declined. Therefore always double- or even triple-check to ensure that everything is spelled correctly. Make sure your name in your passport exactly matches how it is spelled on any other document, for instance.
When applying for a Student Visa the school you want to attend needs to be spelled correctly. The person in charge will check that as well. One minor spelling error could lead to your visa being declined. Therefore, we highly recommend you to go through all your documents thoroughly. For example, if want to study Spanish at FU International Academy Tenerife in Puerto de la Cruz or Costa Adeje, you have to write the full name of our school.
Be patient
For your own peace of mind – be patient. It can be difficult at times to meet the requirements and provide needed documents, then have to sit and wait.
Keep calm and bear in mind that it will be your gateway to getting to Tenerife and having a great time here.
One more thing: be empathic with the employees at the Spanish Embassy. They can’t speed up the process of getting your visa.
Now that you know everything about the visa requirements – go for it.
Come to beautiful Tenerife and become fluent in Spanish with our long-term language course.
We’re looking forward to meeting you soon.

Entry Requirements for Tenerife – Tenerife Airport
Airport InfoArrivals Entry Requirements for Tenerife
As part of Spain, Tenerife is within the EU and the Schengen area. The entry requirements differ, depending on whether you are travelling to Tenerife from another Schengen member state, an EU country that is not part of the Schengen area, or a third country.
Please note that, due to Covid-19, additional travel documentation is currently required. A Health Control Form needs to be completed by everyone travelling to Tenerife from abroad. In addition, you may be required to provide proof of your vaccination status. Please see our Covid-19 travel documentation page for details.
Tenerife Entry Requirements for Citizens of Non-EU / Non-Schengen countries
Since the end of the Brexit transition period on 31/12/2020, this includes the UK.
Passport
You will need a passport to be able to travel to Tenerife. It is important to check the age and expiry date to ensure that it is valid for travel. Your passport has to meet two criteria:
- Valid for 3 months or more after the day you leave Tenerife. Please check the expiry date of your passport.
AND
- Less than 10 years old when you travel to Tenerife. This is calculated from the date of issue.
Please note:
If your passport was renewed early, some additional months may have been added to its expiry date. Your passport may therefore still be valid for 3 months on the day of your return from Tenerife, but may already be more than 10 years old from the date of issue. Please check in good time before you travel that your passport fulfils both criteria.
The above information is based on the advice from the European Union website. Some airlines are currently requesting passport validity of 6 months or more at the time of travel, so please double-check your airline’s requirements.
Visa
The visa requirements for Tenerife will vary, depending on your nationality. Citizens of many countries do not currently require a visa if they visit Tenerife as a tourist for short trips. These countries include
- The United Kingdom
- The United States
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- amongst many others
Please see the European Union website for a full list of countries whose nationals are exempt from the visa requirement.
If you are travelling to Tenerife from one of the above-mentioned countries, the following rules apply:
- You can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
- However, if you are also visiting other EU countries, you will need to check that you do not spend more than 90 days in total across all the countries you visit, in any given 180-day period.
- Different rules apply for business travel and longer stays.
If you do require a visa, you will need to apply for this at the Spanish embassy in your country of residence prior to travelling to Tenerife.
Additional requirements
If you are visiting Tenerife as a tourist from a non-EU / non-Schengen country, you may also be asked to provide proof of the following:
- a return ticket
- the address of your accommodation in Tenerife
- sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Tenerife (currently, this equals € 100 per day)

Using the NHS COVID Pass to demonstrate COVID-19 status
This page applies to England. See information about COVID certificates in Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man.
NHS COVID Pass: what it is and how to get it
The NHS COVID Pass lets you share your coronavirus (COVID-19) status records in a secure way.
It allows you to show others the details of your COVID-19 status when travelling abroad to some countries or territories.
The domestic NHS COVID Pass is no longer available for venues or events to use as a condition of entry
You can get an NHS COVID Pass:
-
digitally through the NHS App or online via NHS.UK
-
as a letter sent to you in the post if travelling abroad, if you require an accessible format, language guide or have limited digital skills
You can find out the eligibility requirements on the NHS website.
Getting your digital NHS COVID Pass
Get your NHS COVID Pass letter
If you are in the UK armed forces, visit ‘My health care hub’ on the Defence Gateway (login required) to find out how to get your NHS COVID Pass.
The NHS App is not the same as the NHS COVID-19 app
The NHS App has been built to provide access to medical services such as seeing your medical records and booking GP appointments. It has been extended to support functionality to demonstrate COVID-19 vaccination status. The NHS COVID-19 App was developed to help manage the outbreaks of COVID-19 and supported features that told you if you had been near someone who tested positively for COVID-19 or you had been to a location that subsequently registered a number of positive cases.
How to use the NHS COVID Pass when travelling abroad
You can show the vaccination records in your NHS COVID Pass as proof of your COVID-19 status when travelling abroad.
Proof of recovery from prior COVID-19 infection if you have tested positive with an NHS PCR test in the last 180 days is also shown.
You will also need to follow any additional rules set by the country you are travelling to when abroad.
You should register with the NHS App before booking international travel.
Read more information on travelling abroad during COVID-19.
You should check that your first name and your surname on your passport match how they are displayed by your NHS COVID Pass at least 3 weeks before you travel. If the names are different, contact your GP practice to have your details updated. Please note, name changes could result in temporary issues with matching your GP record to your hospital and prescription records.
If you have not been fully vaccinated, you should continue to follow the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to, such as proof of a negative COVID-19 test on arrival. You should carefully research the requirements of your destination country before travelling.
Further details on entry requirements can be found on the GOV.UK foreign travel advice pages and on the websites of your destination country.
If you think your vaccination record is incorrect, see what to do if your COVID-19 vaccination record is missing or wrong.
COVID-19 booster vaccinations
You should get your COVID-19 booster as soon as you are eligible.
If you have received a booster vaccination it will show in your NHS COVID Pass for travel within 5 days. You will see a 2D barcode for each vaccination record.
Your vaccinations will show in reverse order, with the most recent first. This is also the case if you download a PDF of your NHS COVID Pass for travel, or store it within the Apple Wallet or Google Pay Wallet.
In advance of planned travel, you should download an offline copy of your NHS COVID Pass, by saving or printing a PDF or storing a card in your Apple Wallet or Google Pay Wallet.
You will also see your detailed booster vaccination information in the ‘View COVID-19 Records’ section of the NHS COVID Pass within the NHS App and online service.
If you require non-digital proof of your booster vaccination for international travel, you can order an NHS COVID Pass letter via the NHS 119 service or via NHS. UK. Your letter will show a 2D barcode for each vaccination you have received, including booster vaccinations.
Some countries require travellers to demonstrate that they received their primary course of a COVID-19 approved vaccination or booster within a certain time period. Travellers should carefully check requirements before travelling.
Your NHS COVID Pass can be scanned to check and validate your COVID-19 status in over 70 countries and territories, including those in the EU.
Find out more about the EU Gateway
Residents in England who have received COVID-19 vaccinations overseas
If you live in England and have had one or more of your COVID-19 vaccinations administered overseas, you can have your vaccination details added to your NHS Record. You can then generate an NHS COVID Pass for international travel if you meet certain certification requirements.
You can use this service if you or your child are aged 5 years old or over and have an NHS number.
Eligible vaccines
You can use this service if you or your child have had one or more of the following vaccines outside of England:
- AstraZeneca AB (Vaxzevria)
- Pfizer/BioNTech (Comirnaty)
- Johnson & Johnson (Janssen)
- Moderna (Spikevax)
- Institute of India (Covishield)
- Bharat Biotech (Covaxin)
- SinoVac (CoronaVac)
- Beijing Institute of Biological Products (Sinopharm BIBP)
- Novavax (Nuvaxovid)
- Serum Institute of India (Covovax)
- Gamaleya (Sputnik V)
If you received a Sinopharm vaccine, your evidence must show that it was manufactured by the Beijing Institute of Biological Products (BIBP). Other Sinopharm manufacturers are not accepted for this service.
Book an appointment to register your overseas vaccinations
To register your overseas vaccinations, you’ll need to book an appointment at a selected list of vaccination centres across England.
Book an appointment to register your overseas vaccination with the NHS
Staff are not able to register your overseas vaccinations unless you book in advance.
Details of your overseas vaccination will then be recorded in the National Immunisation Management System.
If you are registered with a GP in England and were vaccinated in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland or the Isle of Man, you do not need to book an appointment at a vaccination centre as your vaccination event details should flow automatically.
If you need help using this service, read the guidance available on NHS.UK in the first instance. If you still need help answering your query, contact the NHS COVID Pass service by telephoning:
Booking for someone else
You can only book for someone else, such as your child or someone you care for, if you have their consent. You will need to enter their details when booking.
If you book for someone:
Children under 16 years old cannot attend an appointment on their own. They must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible person aged 18 years old or over.
Getting your NHS COVID Pass
Eligible overseas vaccinations will display within your NHS COVID Pass in the same way as vaccines administered under the UK vaccination programme. However, you may see some fields left blank for overseas vaccines.
Your NHS COVID Pass for international travel will show the vaccinations you have received. It may take up to 5 days for vaccines to show in your NHS COVID Pass.
Although you can now have the Gamaleya (Sputnik V) vaccine added to your NHS record for continuation of care purposes, it will not show in your NHS COVID Pass as it is not recognised by the UK government.
Non-eligible overseas vaccinations will not generate an NHS COVID Pass.
Residents in England who have taken part in COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials
On 8 October 2021 the government announced that clinical trial participants of relevant COVID-19 trials would be eligible to receive additional approved vaccine doses to facilitate travel abroad.
Further information on the offer can be found by visiting the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) website.
Clinical trial participants who have received additional doses of approved vaccines will see those doses in their NHS COVID Pass for travel via the NHS App and online via NHS.UK. These doses will show in your travel pass alongside your trial vaccinations, with the most recent vaccination received appearing first.
If you need a non-digital NHS COVID Pass for travel, the NHS COVID Pass letter also includes additional ‘top up’ approved vaccinations. You can ask for this via the NHS 119 service or via NHS.UK. The letter should take up to 7 days to arrive after you order it.
Clinical trial participants who have not received additional doses of approved vaccines
If you took part in a clinical trial within England which was ‘unblinded’ (you were informed of the vaccine used), then you should be able to obtain an NHS COVID Pass for travel if your trial site has uploaded vaccination information onto the NHS vaccine database. If your vaccine records are available and uploaded, then you will see these in your NHS COVID Pass for travel, with your most recent vaccine first.
Participants should contact their clinical trial site if they cannot yet access their travel pass. Before you travel abroad, check the entry rules for any country you want to go to.
If you took part in a clinical trial within England which was ‘blinded’ (you were not informed of the vaccine used), it is recommended that you consider other options for demonstrating your COVID-19 status when travelling abroad, such as additional testing.

Children
NHS COVID Pass digital service
Children aged 5 and over are able to get a digital NHS COVID Pass for international travel.
A digital NHS COVID Pass will:
- provide a record of COVID-19 vaccinations received
- show evidence of prior infection for 180 days following a positive NHS PCR test
See ‘How to use the NHS COVID Pass when travelling abroad’ above.
A digital NHS COVID Pass is available through the:
-
NHS.UK website for a parent or guardian to request for their child aged 5 to 15
-
NHS.UK website for those aged 12 and over who want to request it for themselves (as a PDF you can download or print)
-
NHS App for those aged 13 and over (age restrictions apply for use of the App)
To request an NHS COVID Pass for themselves, the child aged 12 and over will either need to have access to the email address or mobile phone number on their GP record or register for an NHS login. They can do this themselves (or a parent or guardian can help register on their behalf). They will need to:
Verifying identity can take a few days to complete (although it normally takes around 24 hours).
To request an NHS COVID Pass for your child aged 5 to 15, you will need to:
- give the child’s full name, date of birth and NHS number or postcode registered with their GP surgery
- have access to the mobile phone number or email address on the child’s GP record
NHS COVID Pass letter
Children who have had a full primary course of COVID-19 vaccination can get an NHS COVID Pass letter for international travel, with an internationally recognised 2D barcode. Children aged 5 to 11 can also get a recovery letter if they have evidence of a positive COVID-19 NHS PCR test within the last 180 days (not available in the Isle of Man).
This service is available to:
- children living in England under 16
- children living in Wales and the Isle of Man aged 5 to 11 (recovery letter not available in the Isle of Man)
Letters sent to children living in Wales will be in English and Welsh.
Children aged 12 and over living in Wales and the Isle of Man cannot get an NHS COVID Pass letter for travel abroad using this service – they should request letters from those nations’ certification services:
- in Wales, on the Welsh Government website
- in the Isle of Man, by calling 0808 1624 119
This service is not available to those who have received an incomplete course of vaccination (for example, one dose of a 2-dose vaccine).
Requesting an NHS COVID Pass letter
Only a person with legal responsibility for the child (such as a parent or guardian) can request the letter on their behalf. You can request the letter for yourself if you are aged 12 or over.
You can request an NHS COVID Pass letter for travel abroad:
-
online at Get your NHS COVID Pass letter
-
by calling the 119 service (0808 1624 119 for residents of the Isle of Man)
-
on the Welsh Government website, for children living in Wales
You should wait 5 days after the full primary course of vaccination has been completed before requesting a letter. It can then take up to 7 working days for the letter to arrive.
The letter is sent to the address held on the child’s NHS record (the address held by their GP). It will show all the vaccinations they have received. Letters for children aged 5 to 11 will not include details of the administration centre where the vaccination took place, but are still fully valid.
Your GP cannot provide you with this letter.
You should carefully check the entry requirements of the country you are travelling to. Further details on entry requirements can be found on the GOV.UK foreign travel advice pages and on the websites of your destination country.
If you are unable to get vaccinated for medical reasons
In line with removing the domestic NHS COVID Pass for use in venues or events as a condition of entry, the medical exemptions service has closed.
Your medical exemption will still be included in the ‘View COVID-19 Records’ history section with an expiry date (if applicable).
A medical exemption is not valid for international travel. There are no arrangements in place with other countries to accept people from the UK who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons and treat them the same as a fully vaccinated traveller.
Your medical exemption will not appear in the travel NHS COVID Pass. It is up to other countries to decide whether or not residents in England with a medical exemption can follow the same rules for travel as those who are fully vaccinated.
Protecting your data
Your COVID-19 status is either held securely within the NHS App or sent to you via a PDF or a letter. It can only be accessed via a validated NHS login, or by verifying information held on your GP record. The NHS COVID Pass shows your COVID-19 vaccination or recovery status in the form of a 2D barcode and allows you to view the details of your COVID-19 vaccination or recovery record.
Appropriate technical, organisational, and administrative security measures are employed within our systems to protect any information we hold in our records from loss, misuse, unauthorised access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction. We have written procedures and policies which are regularly audited and reviewed.
Your NHS COVID Pass letter that you request via 119 or NHS.UK has been produced and printed with a range of embedded security features to help prevent fraud.

What the barcodes and expiry dates mean
On your NHS COVID Pass for international travel you will see one 2D barcode for each vaccination dose.
You will see the barcodes either:
-
within the NHS COVID Pass in the NHS App
-
if you save or print a PDF of your NHS COVID Pass
-
if you save a copy to your Apple Wallet or Google Pay Wallet
-
on the travel NHS COVID Pass letter
The expiry date does not apply to your vaccination status. The expiry date refers only to the barcode and will update automatically in the digital version of the COVID Pass. The barcodes have expiry dates to protect your data privacy.
However, if you download and save or print a copy of your NHS COVID Pass, the expiry date will eventually show as expired and will not automatically refresh. You will need to log into the NHS COVID Pass service to generate a new copy. Proof of prior infection (recovery) is only valid for 180 days.
If you order a travel NHS COVID Pass letter via the NHS 119 service or online via NHS.UK, the barcodes in your letter will expire after 180 days.
Storing your NHS COVID Pass in Apple Wallet
If you get your NHS COVID Pass through the NHS App or Safari web browser using an Apple iPhone, you can store your NHS COVID Pass in Apple Wallet.
You can then show your NHS COVID Pass, even if your device is offline.

Before You Apply
Before you file your application, make sure you find out the following:
- The type of visa you need to apply for. We cannot stress it enough how important it is to apply for the right visa type. The whole application process depends on it.
- Pre-requirements you need to meet. Every visa type has some pre-requirements that you must meet in order to be able to apply. If you do not meet these pre-requirement and you still apply, your application will be rejected and all your work will go in vain. I.e. those applying for a visa must have an employment offer/agreement with an employer in Spain, or students must be accepted or enrolled at a university in Spain, etc.

Application Steps for a Spain Long Stay Visa
Once you have found out the information specified above, you can then undertake concrete steps to apply for a Spain visa for long-term stays. Find these steps listed in order and explained below:
Complete the Spain national visa application form
There is one application form for short-stay visas and another for long-term stays. Make sure you fill in the right one.
Collect the required documents
You need to collect and submit a number of documents for a Spain Long-Stay visa. Aside from the common documents required for every visa as the application form, photos, passport, and copies of older passports and visas, you need to submit other documents as well.
This includes:
- Proof of financial means. Depending on the type of visa you are applying for, this could be your bank statements, affidavit of support, scholarship, etc.
- Police Record that shows you have not committed any crime in the past.
- Medical insurance provided by an authorized insurance company in Spain.
- Original medical certificate issued by a doctor, verifying you do not have any contagious diseases, and that you are free of drug addictions and mental illness.
- Proof of enrolment at a university in Spain when applying for a student visa.
- Work authorization and copy of employment contract when applying for a work visa.
Note that depending on your visa type, situation, country of residence, and a few other factors, you will need to submit additional documents. All the documents should be translated to Spanish by a recognized Spanish translator.
Make a visa appointment
Depending on your country of residence, you will have to make this appointment online or through a consular call center.
Attend the visa interview
On the day of the interview, you will need to attend a short interview with the visa consular.
Submit your biometrics
If your biometrics aren’t registered in the common EU system, you will need to give them on the day of your interview. This means you will have your facial image and your fingerprints taken.
Pay the visa fee
You will also need to pay a fee on the same day. The costs you need to pay depend on the Spanish long-stay visa type you are applying for.
The Spanish long stay visa fees are different from the Spanish Schengen visa fees. In particular, for American and Canadian applicants who are subject to higher fees compared to the nationals of other world countries.
The fees vary from €80 to about €674. Check our full list of Spanish visa fees for to see the prices.
In addition to the visa fee, if you submit the application at a visa application center as i.e. the BLS, you also need to pay a small fee to them.
Once you complete all these steps, you should then wait for the processing of your visa.
After You Arrive in Spain
Upon arrival in Spain, depending on the intended period of stay, you may have another one or two steps left to complete.
Note that if you are permitted to stay in Spain for a maximum of 180 days, then you do not need to complete any other procedures. On the other hand, if you will be staying in Spain for more than six months, then you should get a tarjeta de identidad de extranjero (TIE), which means Foreigner Identity Card.
Apply for a Foreigner Identity Card within one month of arrival in Spain, at the Foreigners Office in the area where you have settled. You will need your passport with the Spanish visa in it, three photos, and proof of payment of the corresponding fee.
Note that those moving to Spain for employment purposes with a Spanish employment visa, need to register at the Social security scheme before applying for their identity card.

When traveling to Spain on a US passport (visa-free travel), border authorities have the right to request the following documents when entering Spain from the US:

Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended date of departure. Also, it should not be older than 10 years, be in good condition, and have 2 blank visa pages available.

A Return Flight Ticket
Authorities may ask you to present a flight ticket that indicates when you will be leaving Spain. Your flight ticket should show that you will be leaving Spain before the initial 90 days are over.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, all visitors traveling to Spain must have valid health insurance. When considering health insurance, it must cover any medical expenses and provide a minimum of €30,000. Also, your health insurance must cover medical costs across the entire European Union.
During your stay in Spain, you’ll need to be able to fully support yourself financially. Spanish officials may ask you to present proof that you can do so. To prove you have sufficient financial means, you may present documents such as bank statements, payslips, credit card statements, or a letter from your sponsor. Visa in Tenerife – prices, terms and necessary documents for obtaining a visa – “Single Visa Center”
If you want to visit the picturesque island of Tenerife, you need a visa that allows you to cross the border of the Spanish state. A standard Schengen is also suitable for travel, since the archipelago legally belongs to Spain, although it is located next to Africa. Back in 1995, Spain became a member of the Schengen Agreement, so to enter the Canary Islands you need a Schengen visa from any state.
The Canary Islands are popular for their wonderful climate. A visa opened for the Canary Islands gives you the opportunity to enjoy the sun, a light fragrant breeze, warm Atlantic waters, beautiful beaches, excellent weather. For a memorable holiday, you just need to observe small formalities.
It is noteworthy that Spain is considered a country where Russian citizens are treated kindly. Reviews about consular staff are good.
Requirements and list of documents
The set of required papers includes:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of the intended border crossing.
- Completed questionnaire. Information is entered in Spanish or English, in case of problems, you can resort to the help of consular staff (but for a fee).
- Photocopies of old passports. This inspires confidence in the applicant on the part of the representatives of the consulate.
- Return tickets / to a third country. Representatives of diplomatic delegations, people working on ships, pilots are exempted from this.
- Information about solvency. It is necessary that the applicant has at least 90 euros per person per day in the account.

If a minor child travels with a father or mother, a notarized consent is required from the parent who is not traveling. Perhaps his journey with a confidant, but then the consent is prepared by both the father and the mother.
Types of permits
Depending on the purpose of travel, visa permits are divided into classes:
- C1 – single entry travel permit. Its owner has the right to stay in the European Union until 30 her. Free movement throughout the country is allowed.
- C2 – multiple tourist permit. If you are going to Tenerife, a visa for Russians of this type allows you to stay in the country for up to 90 days.
- C3 – multiple permit valid for up to a year. As practice shows, it is usually issued for a visit to relatives.
- C4 – long-term permit valid up to 5 years. It is issued very rarely. Usually open for those traveling for educational or business purposes.
Users often ask themselves if they plan to travel to Tenerife, which visa is suitable?
If you are going to just relax, get acquainted with local attractions, you should open class C1-C2 permits. To obtain them, you need the least amount of paperwork, and a period of 1 to 3 months is usually enough for a standard tourist trip abroad.
Denial of permission
No person is immune from refusal. Therefore, you should take seriously the procedure for collecting the required documentation, comply with all established standards. At the same time, the Consulate reserves the right to request additional paperwork if it deems it necessary.
In order to obtain a visa to Tenerife for Russians 2020, the following conditions must be met:
- Correctly fill out all forms – without errors, inaccuracies, blots.
- Be sure to put down signatures in the required places.
- Indicate only reliable information.
- Remain calm, behave adequately at the interview.
- It is optimal to submit papers in advance – at least a month before the trip.
The sooner you collect the documentation, the more time you have to fix problems (if any).
They often refuse when the representatives of the Consulate have doubts about the close ties of the applicant with the homeland. Therefore, it is important to provide evidence that you are not going to emigrate.
Usually the refusal is accompanied by an explanatory letter. As a rule, after 14 days, you can submit papers again.
How to check if your visa is ready when applying through the Visa Application Center
Applying for an entry permit through the Visa Application Center is very convenient – you can always track its status. To do this, you need to know her number. After entering the numbers in a special field, you can see at what stage of consideration the application is.
This approach saves time and effort, eliminates exhausting trips, which, moreover, may turn out to be fruitless. As soon as the data on the readiness of the passport appears, it is enough just to come for it.
Traveling with children
If you plan to travel with a child, in addition to the basic set of documents, additional paperwork is also collected:
- If the parents are divorced and the child is traveling with one of them, a notarized consent from the second is required. This rule also applies when the child travels with a proxy (but then the consent must be from both the father and the mother, and in the transit zone he must be met by a proxy – a resident of this country).
- Photocopies of parents’ internal passports are required.
- Provide the original birth certificate of the child.
- A copy of the child’s passport is attached if he is 14 years old.
- Medical insurance required.
- Completed questionnaire.
The specifics of each case are taken into account, depending on this, additional paperwork may be required. For example, if one of the parents is deprived of rights, a document confirming this is attached. One of his parents has passed away, a death certificate is required.
Categories of permits
To spend time in Tenerife, a visa is required for Russians, regardless of the purpose of the trip.
The classification of entry documents is based on their validity periods:
- Long-term – national type D. They are issued for a long stay, they can study and work in Spain. They operate from 1 year to several years.
- Short-term type C. Allows you to stay in the archipelago up to 90 days within 6 months of opening.
- Type A – allows you to transfer at a Spanish airport. A visa for Russians of this type to the Canary Islands gives the right to move around the transit zone, but not leave it.
- Type B – it is received by those who plan to stay in the country for 5 days.
Tenerife visa – the cost of the document
If you deal with opening a permit yourself, it will cost 35 euros. That’s how much the consular fee costs. Urgent permits are opened at a price of 70 euros.
If you use the Visa Application Centre, you will also have to pay a service fee. It is 29.50 euros per application. The final amount may include the cost of additional services (photos, photocopies, etc.).
All payments are due at the time of filing. Children under 6 years of age are exempt from paying any fees.
Extension of permit, violation of the terms of stay
With a standard tourist permit, you can stay in Spain for no more than 90 days. But local legislation provided for the right to extend the visa. As a result, the period of stay in the country can be doubled. But there must be serious reasons for this:
- The need for urgent medical intervention.
- Accident.
- Other health related causes.
The application is submitted to the General Office for Aliens or the police station. A passport is attached to it, confirming that there are good reasons for extending the paper, evidence of a sufficient material base, and insurance.
Failure to comply with the established dates of stay may result in a ban on future visits.

Since May 21, Spain has simplified the rules for entering the country. The corresponding order was published in the government bulletin.
Russians can now enter Spain if they test negative for the coronavirus. Instead, as before, they will accept a certificate of vaccination with a drug approved in Spain, such as Pfizer or Moderna, or a document on the transferred covid. A certificate from public services, most likely, will not work. You will also need a Schengen visa to travel.
You can get to Spain only with transfers: direct flights with Russia have been stopped due to sanctions.
I’ll tell you more about everything.
Does Spain issue visas for travelers? This was confirmed to me at the Spanish visa center.
List of documents required for the Spanish Schengen visa
The visa fee is 3257 R, the service fee is 1438 R. The Spanish visa center clarified that they can only be paid in cash and only in rubles. Travelers write on the Vinsky Forum that visas are processed on average in 4-10 business days. Most receive them for two years.
Let me remind you that you can enter Spain with a Schengen visa from another country. For example, Greek or Finnish.
What documents do travelers need to enter Spain
Travelers from Russia need a passport with a Schengen visa. Children under 12 and transit passengers will not need coronavirus certificates, but only if the transit lasts no more than 24 hours and the person does not leave the clean area of the airport. All others must submit one of the following documents: a vaccination certificate, a certificate of recovery, or a negative covid test result. I will tell you about the requirements for these certificates.
Coronavirus certificate requirements in Spain PDF, 949 KB
Vaccination certificate. Only a document of vaccination with a drug that is approved by WHO or EMA will do. Among them are Comirnaty (Pfizer), Vaxzevria (Astrazeneca), Covishield, Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), Spikevax (Moderna), Sinovac, Sinopharm, Covaxin, Coronavac, Nuvaxovid (Novavax) and Vero Cell. A minimum of 14 days must elapse after vaccination is completed.
Submit the document in Spanish, English, French or German. The validity of the certificate for adult travelers is 270 days. For persons under 18 years of age, the certificate is considered to be indefinite.
Certificate of recovery from coronavirus in the last 180 days. It must be recognized in the EU. The rules say that if a person presents another document instead of an EU digital certificate, then he must show along with him a positive test result for coronavirus, which he received during his illness.
I could not find information that Russians came to Spain with certificates from government services or from Russian medical institutions. If you had such an experience, share in the comments.
Negative covid test. PCR test must be submitted within 72 hours prior to departure. Instead, they will accept the result of an antigen test. It is handed over within 24 hours.
The rules have not yet been updated on the portal of the Spanish Ministry of Health – this will probably happen in the near future.

Study (student) visa to Spain. Spain in Russian
Permission to stay in Spain on the basis of training
Every year hundreds of our compatriots come to study in Spain. Traditionally, many of them arrive on a tourist visa type C to study Spanish courses, thus combining vacation and education in Spain. Recently, however, schools and universities in Spain have become increasingly popular, training in which involves a long stay in the country. This requires a D visa to Spain with further issuance of a resident card.
There are two types of study visa to Spain:
- Spanish study visa, which gives the right to stay up to 180 days;
- Spanish study visa, which gives the right to reside for a year in Spain with the possibility of further extension.
Student visa to Spain for up to 180 days is usually issued for long-term studies. The process of obtaining this visa is quite simple, as it does not require a medical certificate and a certificate of good conduct. The main disadvantage of this visa is that it cannot be extended in Spain.
In this article, we will look at how to apply for a D visa to Spain (permission to stay on the basis of studies), which gives the right to reside in the country for a year. This visa is also called a “student residence”.
Please note that student residence in Spain does not have the status of a residence permit. Therefore, for example, in the case of applying for Spanish citizenship, the period of residence in Spain on a study visa will not be counted towards the required minimum.
Student visa to Spain: documents
1. Application for an official Spanish national visa, completed and signed in two copies by the applicant or his official representative (for minors).
2. Valid passport (as well as copies of all pages), the validity of which must exceed the period for which the visa is requested.
3. Documents confirming the availability of funds for living in Spain during the period of study and for repatriation of both the applicant himself and the family members living on his support. The minimum level of income for a student is set at 100% of IPREM (El Indicador Público de Renta de Efectos Múltiples – a multifunctional general indicator of income). IPREM is currently 532.51 euros for one month. 75% of IPREM (399.38 euros), for the second and subsequent – 50% of IPREM (266.26 euros). Documents confirming the availability of funds may include the following:
- sponsorship letters, usually from parents;
- bank statements;
- certificates from the place of work.
4. For minor students who will be in Spain without parents, it is required to issue:
- original notarized travel permit, which includes the name of the educational institution, the expected duration of the course and the details of the guardian who will be in charge of the child;
- the original of the notarial deed on the acceptance by the guardian of the relevant obligations.
5. If the child will live in Spain without parents, in order to obtain a student visa, it is necessary to arrange guardianship. We are talking about those situations where children live on school grounds, if the school provides the opportunity to live in a hostel or Spanish families. In the first case, the director of the hostel or school, as a rule, acts as the guardian of the child, in the second – one of the parents of the family where the child will live. Only a resident of Spain can be a guardian of a child.
Documents confirming accommodation in Spain for the entire period of study
1. A document confirming enrollment in an officially accredited training center for a full-time study program that provides for the issuance of a final diploma or certificate. The document must contain the following data:
- student’s name;
- name of the training center;
- name of the training course;
- period of study;
- course program and number of teaching hours per week.
2. For adult pupils/students, a certificate of no criminal record for the last five years issued by the authorities of the country of residence.
All submitted documents must be translated into Spanish and certified by the Consulate of Spain in Russia. Notarial documents and a certificate of good conduct must have an apostille.
Applying for a study visa in Spain
Documents are submitted personally by the applicant (for minors – by parents, guardians or official representatives) to the Consulate of Spain in Russia at the place of residence.
Payment of the fee is made immediately at the time of filing the application. In case of refusal of a visa, the amount of the fee is not refundable.
The term for consideration of an application for a long-term visa to Spain is one month from the day following the day of submission of documents. If after the expiration of the specified period no response is received from the consulate, it is considered that a negative decision was made on the application, and the applicant was denied a visa. The consulate has the right to invite the applicant for an interview and require any additional documents.
Registration of a Spanish resident card
If the decision is positive, the long-term visa type D is pasted into the passport of the applicant to enter Spain. To obtain a visa, it is necessary to appear at the consulate with a passport within 2 months. If the applicant does not appear within the specified period, then it is considered that he refused the visa, and the case is transferred to the archive.
The visa is valid for 90 days. During this time, you must enter Spain and then, within 1 month, request a residence card from the relevant police department. Many cities have an appointment system (for example, in Barcelona and Valencia). We recommend signing up for the submission of documents immediately upon arrival, especially in large cities, as there are queues.

Do Russians need a visa in Tenerife, how to apply in 2020
Hot sun, warm sea, soft sand, amazing nature and a lot of entertainment for every taste – all this offers tourists modern Tenerife – a wonderful island in the Atlantic Ocean. It is not surprising that this corner is a real paradise on earth and is very popular with tourists. Many people go there every year. Others are just planning their first trip and therefore want to know if Russians need a visa in Tenerife? And if so, where and how can you get it?
Features of the visa
To answer the question of whether it is necessary to apply for a visa when going to Tenerife, you should first understand which state this island belongs to. Tenerife is the largest of the seven Canary Islands that are part of Spain. Accordingly, the rules for traveling to it are the same as the procedure for visiting any Spanish city or resort.
The second question that needs to be dealt with when going on vacation: what kind of visa do Russians need in Tenerife? Here everything is also quite simple. Since Spain is a member of the Schengen Union, Russians will need a Schengen visa to travel to Tenerife.
Types of visas that open the way to Tenerife
For those who are going to get a Schengen visa for the first time, you need to know that there are several different categories of visas, the difference between which lies in the purposes and duration of the tourist’s stay in the country.
Thus, Class A and B visas are designed for transit passengers. At the same time, the first gives the right to stay in the country for no more than three days and only in special transit zones. By the way, Russians do not need this category of visas, since they can stay in transit zones without additional permits and marks.
Holders of the second category, if necessary, can leave special zones and move freely around the country, but not more than 5 days, and only if they have a ticket to a third country. This visa is suitable for those who plan to visit not only Spanish territories, but also other European countries in one trip.
You can also go to Tenerife on a Schengen visa category “C”. This is the most popular visa option among tourists. Moreover, this category is further divided into several subcategories:
- C1 – a visa that gives the right to stay on the Spanish island for up to 30 days. At the same time, you can visit not only the Canary Islands, but also freely travel around Spain. But there are restrictions on crossing the borders of other states.
- C2 – allows you to arrive, leave and return to Tenerife within 90 days.
- C3 – a visa issued for a period of 1 year, which gives the right to enter any Schengen Union countries and stay in them for as long as you like, subject to certain rules.
- C4 – operates in the same way as the previous one, but is issued for a period of 5 years.
In addition, there are also category “D” visas with the right to stay in the country for a long time and travel to other countries for up to 3 months once every six months. Such visas are suitable for those who go abroad to study or work. However, it is much more difficult to get it than a regular tourist one, and it is absolutely not necessary for those who are only going to spend a vacation on an exotic island.
If you have valid Schengen visas from other countries, then there is no need to additionally issue a permit to travel to Tenerife.
How to apply for a visa in Tenerife in 2020?
The most important document for obtaining a coveted visa is a valid passport. At the same time, it must be received no earlier than three months before applying for a visa and its validity period must end no earlier than 90 days after the end of the holiday in the Canary Islands.
Copies of all pages of foreign and civil passports will also be required.
In addition, you will need to fill out an application for a Schengen visa. The data must be entered in it in Spanish or English (those who do not know these languages should not worry, as they can help in filling it out both at the consulate itself and at special translation agencies). The application form must be signed by hand.

Passport and application form must be accompanied by two color photographs. Pictures must meet a number of requirements:
- size 35×45 mm;
- shooting time – not earlier than 6 months before the paperwork;
- without border;
- background – white.
The photo must show the applicant with open ears and no accessories.
Also, anyone who is interested in how to get a visa in Tenerife should remember about health insurance. It is issued for an amount of at least 30 thousand euros. At the same time, its effect should exceed the planned time spent on the island by 15 days. You can purchase the necessary insurance at the visa center or via the Internet.
Additional documents
As additional documents for obtaining a travel permit for Spain in general and the Canary Islands in particular, you may need:
- Proof of residence (this may be a hotel reservation, permission from relatives or landlords) ).
- Reservation of air tickets (or confirmation of their purchase, depending on the requirements of the consulate).
- Certificate from the place of work, which indicates the position and salary, as well as the date of vacation and details of the employing company. The certificate must be printed on company letterhead.
- Papers confirming solvency (certificate from a bank on the state of a bank account or an extract from a credit card).
Also, a sponsor’s statement (this can be anyone, including relatives) can be used as proof of solvency.
A mandatory procedure for those who receive a visa for the first time is fingerprinting. Only children under the age of 12 and people with physical injuries, as a result of which papillary lines were damaged, are exempted from submitting biometric data. Fingerprint information is stored in the database for 59months. Therefore, when you re-obtain a Schengen visa during this time, you will no longer need to take fingerprints again.
Traveling with a child
When planning a holiday in Tenerife with a minor child, it is important to remember some additional nuances. So, a visa to the Canary Islands for a child can be issued only if:
- Copies of the birth certificate. Moreover, if the parents and the child have different surnames, additional confirmation of the relationship between them will be required (a copy of the parent’s international passport with information about the child and his photograph).
- Certificates from the place of study.
- 2 color photos and medical insurance.
If children are traveling with only one parent, a notarized permission for the child to leave must be provided.
The cost of a visa in Tenerife and the term of its issuance
After collecting and submitting all the necessary documents, obtaining a visa can take from 7 to 10 days.
The amount of the consular fee for obtaining a visa in Tenerife is the same as for obtaining permission to enter any EU country. At the moment it is 35 euros. If you want to speed up the process (reduce the period of consideration of documents to 1-2 days), you will have to pay 70 euros.
At the same time, it is important to remember that the increased payment is not a guarantee of obtaining a visa at all, but only an acceleration of the document verification process. The decision to issue a permit is influenced by whether the tourist received Schengen visas before, whether he violated the visa regime in Spain and a number of other circumstances.
Children (under 12 years of age) and those whose next of kin are permanently residing in Spain legally are exempted from paying the consular fee.
Also, when submitting documents, the services of the consular center are additionally paid in the amount of 15 euros per person. This amount is paid by everyone, without exception, even those who are exempt from paying the consular fee.
