Vallehermoso – Negros Oriental
Vallehermoso is a town in the Negros Oriental province of the Philippines. It is located on the border of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental, which are the eastern and northwestern parts respectively of the island of Negros in the Central Visayas region. It is surrounded by three cities, San Carlos in the north, Guihulngan in the south and Canlaon in the east. The municipality of Vallehermoso is divided into fifteen barrios or barangays, which means village, district or ward, and is the smallest administrative division in the Philippines.
The town was founded by Don Diego de la Viña y de la Rosa, a revolutionary and a local hero of Negros Oriental who was of Spanish-Chinese parentage. In 1881 he came from Negros Occidental looking for new land to occupy. He called the place “Valle hermoso” or beautiful valley when he first saw it from the top of a hill, and that was how the town got its name. The region, then called Bagawines, was the home of the unfriendly Bukidnons, an aboriginal tribe. Don Diego met their chief Ka Saniko and offered fine canes and other artifacts in exchange for land. Clearing the land with the help of some members of the tribe, Don Diego built his home, a casa tribunal, and a chapel. Within five years the valley became a hacienda where rice, corn, sugar cane tobacco, and coconut were grown. Don Diego continued to increase his estate until it stretched north to Macapso on the boundary of San Carlos, south to Mopolo on the boundary of Guihulngan and the slopes of Canlaon, where his horses and cattle grazed. He had a civilizing influence on the Bukidnons and inculcated in them a love of work and ideas about religion. Don Diego also built a road to Negros Occidental, which gave him access to take part in the historic revolt against the Spanish.
According to the census of 2010, Vallehermoso has a population of 36,943. Most of the people are farmers and fishermen while some work for the government or in private businesses.
More than half have completed secondary schooling while many are professionally trained.
Getting to Vallehermoso
Located approximately 152 km away from the capital of Dumaguete City, Vallehermoso is a small provincial paradise here in Negros Oriental.
Getting to Vallehermoso via a Ceres Bus will take you about 3 hours and 30 minutes for traveling time from Dumaguete and will cost approximately Php 210.00 for air-conditioned buses and about Php 190.00 for regular non-air conditioned buses. Another way to get to Vallehermoso is via a V-hire (Van for hire). Traveling time takes only about 3 hours and 15 minutes from Dumaguete City and will cost Php 140.00.

Festival in Vallehermoso
Negros Oriental, being a mainly Christian Roman Catholic region, has Fiestas to celebrate harvests, births, victories and religious events.
There are twenty-four fiestas, each dedicated to its patron saint. Vallehermoso, along with Ayungon and Zamboanguita, celebrates the Fiesta of San Isidro Labrador on May 15. Saint Isidore the Labourer, the patron saint of farmers, worked for the betterment of the poor and for animals. The town also takes regularly part in the Buglasan Festival, one of the highlights of the festival season of Negros Oriental, that takes place in Dumaguete City in the second week of October. Booths are set up by all towns and cities in Negros Oriental exhibiting their special products and tourist attractions. The festival, with street dancing contests and a float parade, goes on for a week. The Grand Fiesta Of Vallehermoso starts 13th to 15th of May its called Kanglambat Festival.
Places of Interests in Vallehermoso
Vallehermoso or the “beautiful valley” lives up to its name and offers a scenic and peaceful experience removed from the hubbub and noisy rush of a big city.
Its caves and sugar cane fields are soothing to the eye as well as to the soul. The picturesque landscape and the beach are the other attractions. The close proximity to three cities, all within a 29-mile radius, makes it convenient for the tourist as well.
Sayaw Enchanted Falls
The virgin forest though not as big compared to other forests, still has many trees, wild plants and flowers, and abundant water. This becomes the dwelling place of these species of birds known as “SAYAW”.

Economy of Vallehermoso
Most of the area of Vallehermoso is made up of agricultural land with sugarcane and corn as the main product. Rice, coffee, banana, and cassava are also important crops. Coconut adds another source of income through arguably the best “tuba” (coconut wine) of Negros Oriental. Bags, broomsticks and fashion accessories made from indigenous materials are also made and sold by the locals.
Climate
Negros Oriental lies outside the “Typhoon Belt“, however, it still gets hit by typhoons and heavy tropical storms each other year. Vallehermoso has a climate that can be divided into distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season lasts for one or two months while there is light to heavy rain for the rest of the time. The people of Vallehermoso distinguish between “rain from God” that helps things to grow and “rain from the devil” that destroys things. April is the coolest month while July is the hottest. The least and most rainfall occurs in April and October respectively.

Information
Vallehermoso municipal market was built in 1930 and its architectural structure was novel in comparison to other shopping hubs of the era. Its colourful and traditional façade makes it impossible to miss; it appears, unmistakeably, on the corner of the streets Vallehermoso and Fernando el Católico, underscoring the importance of the market in the past as well as the present. Since September 2017 it boasts a new look as well as an innovative new offering: a permanent farmers’ market.
The market contains several stalls featuring a careful selection of quality produce at reasonable prices, including butchers, fish mongers, grocers, creameries, poulterers and bakeries as well as specialist shops offering Italian products, spices and tea, among other items.
The market’s ground floor is occupied by the Farmers’ Gallery, made up of small artisan food businesses that offer environmentally-friendly foods at fair prices which are produced locally using traditional processes. These include fresh garden produce, eggs, meat, snails, milk, etc., as well as processed food: lunch meats and sausages, liqueurs, smoked foods, cheese, coffee, chocolate, croquettes, pies and pasties, among other offerings. The space also features a tasting area where food can be sampled on site.
In the market visitors can also enjoy culinary offerings from a variety of cultures (Argentinean, Japanese, Thai…) as well as a broad programme of leisure and entertainment activities.

Vallehermoso: Nature’s Landscape Masterpiece – Canary Islands Info
Sprawled in La Gomera‘s western part is the glorious Vallehermoso. As the largest in the island, the vast municipality is home to various types of terrain. Its coast, although not always welcoming to eager swimmers, is also stunning. Here, vacationers are close to natural wonders and can walk in towns where time stood still.
History
La Gomera was once a kingdom under one ruler. After the death of King Amalahuigue, however, the island was divided into four smaller territories: Mulagua, Ipalán, Agana, and Orone. Then, the conquest and eventual fall of the Canaries came. Today’s Vallehermoso was, at that time, part of the last two cantons. It wasn’t until 1678 that it was finally declared a separate municipality.
In the 16th century, the vast area started sugarcane cultivation.
This industry well lasted until the 18th century and was the force behind the population growth. While other regions were experiencing economic hardships, Vallehermoso was the engine that kept La Gomera afloat.
The 19th century was an entirely different story as the demand for sugarcane significantly dropped. Alas, the era of agricultural prosperity brought by this particular crop came to an end. Other produce such as tomato and orchilla, unfortunately, didn’t return enough profit. Nonetheless, Vallehermoso still expanded with the addition of Chipude in its territory.
1910 came and what was once fields and fields of sugarcane were turned into banana plantations. Sadly, the resurrection of the farming industry was short-lived. Many years of political turmoil in La Gomera caused many of its inhabitants to leave the island for greener pastures. A good number moved to Venezuela and other countries in South America. Tourism eventually landed on its shore by the 90s and has been the primary reason for the surge of developments in the green isle.

Natural Monument Roque Cano
Rising from the hillside of Vallehermoso is the unique-looking Roque Cano. It has quite a portfolio that attests to its landmark status. Los Órganos Natural Monument
Chiseled out of the north-west coastline of the island by the harsh Atlantic waves, Los Órganos is an all-natural spectacle.
Unlike the prior that is visible from many parts of Vallehermoso, the cooled mass of magma remains hidden from the inland but out in the open from the sea. The only way to see it is by joining a boat excursion.
Fortaleza de Chipude
La Fortaleza is an imposing beauty at 1241-meter-high. Even in the time of the original inhabitants of La Gomera, it already played a vital role. As such, its flat summit is home to several valuable archaeological sites. Today, vacationers can admire it from the nearby town of Chipude or hike to its peak.

Ravines of Orone
Erques-La Rajita and La Negra, the two ravines of Orone, are also favored by hikers. Aside from the breathtaking vistas that enthralls adventurers, the semi-abondoned villages of Erques, Erquito and La Rajita are also a must-see. Somehow, they have this melancholic charm that makes the walk and visit worth it.

Only three kilometers from the town center is the stunning beach of Vallehermoso.
With towering cliffs surrounding the unspoiled gravel beauty, it is gaining popularity amongst holidaymakers. As marvelous as it looks, though, its choppy bay is only for experienced swimmers. Those who wish to take a dip can still do so in the seawater swimming pool built just beside it. Fitted with changing rooms, showers, and a snack bar, the complex is very much like a tiny resort. Here, visitors can swim, lounge around, and bask in the sun and all the glorious panoramas.

El Castillo del Mar
Built in 1890, the former banana loading station in Playa de Vallehermoso is quite an intriguing structure. It stands at the bottom of the cliff, and its platform extends to the sea. From here, people can admire the wondrous beach and the silhouette of Mount Teide. Today, apart from being a tourist attraction, it also hosts cultural events.

Jardín Botánico del Descubrimiento de Vallehermoso
Of course, the municipality has something to offer plant enthusiasts. Get to know the endemic floras of La Gomera in Jardín Botánico del Descubrimiento de Vallehermoso. The 16,219-square-meter botanical garden, constructed in 2000, also houses plant species from the other Canary Islands and five different continents.

The clock stopped ticking a long time ago in some of Vallehermoso’s villages. Serene and timeless, they embody the authentic rural Canary Islands that has since been lost. The north-west of the island is particularly rich with those kind of hamlets. Hear the crashing waves in Arguamul and Alojera.
Visit one of the island’s oldest church, Ermita de Santa Lucía, in the mountain-top Tazo. Not in that region but undoubtedly a must-visit is El Cercando. It’s in the center of the island and is a go-to for people who love pottery or want to it.
Getting to and Around Vallehermoso
By Bus
Tourists arriving in La Gomera by plane and going to Vallehermoso by public transport have two options. From the airport, the fastest route is by going north. Take bus number 06 to El Cercado, Chipude, and Alejeró (towns in Vallehermoso). To go to the town of Vallehermoso, they must stop at Las Hayas and take bus 04.
Another option and is to head to San Sebastian first via bus number 07. From the capital, bus number 02 will go straight to Vallehermoso while 03 goes to Alajero. Those arriving by ferry must take either of the two (depending on where they plan to go).
Once already in the town of Vallehermoso, travelers can take bus numbers 04 and 05 which stops at the different towns in the municipality.
By Car
From the airport to the town of Vallehermoso, drive along GM-2 then GM-1. If coming from San Sebastian, GM-1 will take them straight to the town center.
Where to Stay
When planning to spend a holiday in Vallehermoso, dismiss the idea of staying in a lavish hotel. Sojourning in this municipality means living like the locals and being close to nature. With unspoiled scenery right next door, it’s no surprise people are moving here for good.
In the Municipal Capital
Many vacationers opt to stay in the town of Vallehermoso as it is near several natural landmarks and is fitted with ample commercial establishments. When in the heart of the municipality, the three-bedroom Casa de Telégrafos is an excellent choice. Guests can get relax in the cozy seating area or cook when and what they want in the fully-equipped kitchen. They can also admire Roque Cano from the roof-deck.
In El Cercado
When going to El Cercado whether to learn pottery, hike, or just unwind, Casa Vista Bella’s door is wide open.

Most of La Gomera’s best international food establishments are in San Sebastian and Valle Gran Rey. Vallehermoso, however, has a good share of excellent Canarian restaurants. For true island flavors with a touch of Spanish and Mediterranean taste, there’s no need to search outside the municipality.
Vallehermoso’s Must-Trys
Vacationers in Vallehermoso (the town) should not miss Tasca Restaurante El Carraca and Bodegon Restaurante Agana.
Literally split in half, the prior is a bar on one side and a seated restaurant on the other. Morcillas Caseras (homemade blood sausages), Albacore A La Plancha (Grilled Longfin Tuna), and Leche Agana (baked egg custard) are their best-sellers. On the other hand, the latter is a local favorite known for their huge pork chops, Costillas con papas y piñas (Ribs with potatoes and pineapples), Escaldón, fish soup, queso frito, and Leche Asada.
Romantic Meal by the Beach
To sweep your partner off his or her feet effortlessly, drop by Prisma. Don’t think it’s only for couples, though. All seafood lovers near or in Alojera should try their menu. Their tuna salad and “catch of the day” selections are always cooked marvelously. Diners can enjoy a meal and a glass of wine while watching the waves crash against the sea wall. They can also play with the friendly neighborhood cats if they want.
Local Bar in a Picturesque Village
Bar Victoria is a favorite amongst La Fortaleza hikers and El Cercado visitors mainly for three reasons.
They have a wide range of local wines, inexpensive but delicious food, and the encompassing scenery is heart-stopping. Their must-trys include watercress soup, beef and goat stew, pork liver and mojo picón, almendrados, almogrote, goat cheese, and milk pudding with palm honey.

Vallehermoso is a coastal municipality in the province of Negros Oriental.
The municipality has a land area of 101.25 square kilometers or 39.09 square miles which constitutes 1.87% of Negros Oriental’s total area. Its population as determined by the 2020 Census was 40,779. This represented 2.85% of the total population of Negros Oriental province, or 0.50% of the overall population of the Central Visayas region.
Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 403 inhabitants per square kilometer or 1,043 inhabitants per square mile.
