La Arena beach

On the natural beaches of Tenerife, volcanic fine sand of anthracite color. In the heat it warms up so that it is impossible to walk on it even in beach slippers. Under the feet there is black sand, the fore azure ocean, the behind palm trees – this fabulously beautiful place is called La Arena, which immediately captivates with its tranquility and comfort.

Photos

Beach description

La Arena is located in a small bay right in the center of Puerto de Santiago. The beach is not big itself. The length is a little more than 100 meters and in depth up to 40 meters. Entering the sea is although shallow, but sometimes there is a strong wave that brings large stones. It is better not to enter the water without special shoes And also this beach is not very suitable for families with children. They will be uncomfortable in the hot black sand, and they won’t be able to keep the baby on a deck chair. The water in La Arena is warmer than in many places, as a small bay warms up faster. Near the coast you can find fish, shellfish, even octopuses. For lovers of snorkeling it is the most suitable. And besides, coastal restaurants prepare these living creatures very tasty, although not cheaply. This beach is preferred by young people, as it is very beautiful, and jumping on the waves near the shore is a pleasure. The elderly tourists also like the beach, since black sand is very healthy.

When is it better to go

In Tenerife, you can relax all year round, but the most comfortable months for a beach holiday are July, August and September. In winter, the island is prone to precipitation and strong winds. The temperature of the ocean all year round is around +21 °C.

Infrastructure

La Arena Beach is a calm place, equipped with everything you need. There are umbrellas, sun loungers, and wooden walkways, although they reach only the middle of the beach, and then it is a red-hot “cereal”. It’s funny to watch people get up from their towels, and then jump into these walkways with rabbit leaps.

On the beach, rescuers are vigilantly watching the tourists. There are many cafes, restaurants, convenience stores and souvenir shops around. There is a small parking by the beach. We have to leave the car a few streets from the beach.

There are a large number of apartments in the surrounding area. Prices are various: from 50 to 200 € per day. Nearby hotels are mainly four-star hotels, the closest one is Be live experience Playa La Arena 200 meters from the beach. Overnight at the hotel will cost 190 €.

  • Shower (paid)
  • Toilet, also a place for changing clothes (paid)
  • Rescuers work

What to see

Near the beach there are the Mask Gorge and Los Gigantes, which are definitely worth a visit.

The completely sheer cliffs of Los Gigantes, like stone walls, reach a height of half a kilometer. They rise formidably above the ocean. They were called the “Walls of Hell” in the Middle Ages and thought that here it is the edge of the earth. The cliffs stretch for 10 km. Tourists-tourists are brought to them by boats, which at the foot of these rocks seem to be grains of sand.

Maska Ravine is one of the most popular tourist routes in Tenerife. They go to the ravine either from the beach, or, conversely, from the top, which you need to climb the mountain serpentine by car. Here you can arrange a sumptuous photo shoot if you do not get tired of the long path (4 km) along the gorge.

Playa de la Arena – Tenerife

Playa de la Arena is located on the south-west coast of the island of Tenerife. It is becoming a popular destination for Most vacationers gravitate towards popular destinations, and it’s no different in Tenerife. Tourist attractions such as Los Gigantes and Puerto Santiago are great. However, venturing out to Playa de la Arena, their lesser-known neighbor also located in the municipality of Santiago del Teide, offers a unique travel experience worth trying.

Why Visit Playa de Arena

Playa de la Arena is a 175-meter long and 75-meter wide cove of fine black sand. It boasts calm waters, peaceful surroundings, and a laid-back vibe that is great for families and those looking to recharge. In this natural beauty, you can leave the hustle and bustle of major tourist spots without sacrificing comfort. It has all essential amenities, a commercial strip, and nearby accommodations. In addition, this free-for-all beach is well-placed, being around fascinating marine life and a short distance away from some of the island’s most exciting sights.

The highly coveted blue flag has been flying on Playa de la Arena’s pristine bay for 32 straight years, making it the longest beach in the Canary Islands to hold the status. This well-recognized annual award is granted to beaches, marinas, and boat tour operators that pass the foundation’s stringent evaluation on the bathing waters’ quality. To get it, candidates must meet and maintain strict accessibility, environmental, educational, and safety criteria.

La Arena Beach’s winning streak started in 1987 but sadly ended in 2020 and is still without it in 2021. The beach fell short in meeting the incredibly high standard for achieving blue flag status, but it certainly meets minimum quality for bathing water. Thus, it remains a great choice for vacationers, with excellent online reviews in recent years to settle any doubts.

An Uncrowded Paradise with All Modern Conveniences

Playa de la Arena boasts glimmering sand, swaying palm trees, fairly calm waters, and a superb view that is even more specular as the sun sets over La Gomera on the horizon. All these things work together to lend the beach a tropical feel and turn it into a perfect place for relaxation away from the tourism hubbub. Here, you can have a taste of the quieter side of life with the volcanic landscape under your feet.

Located in a part of the Tenerifethat enjoys some of the best weather, it hardly ever rains in Playa de la Arena, even in the winter months. This makes it an excellent spot for tourists searching for sun, sand, sea, smiles, and serenity. It’s also wheelchair accessible, with several gentle paths from the promenade leading down to the beach. Families with kids visit as well, but the cove can grow too deep too fast for little ones, so it’s best they stay supervised and just alongside the water at all times.

From the boardwalk, you’ll see a good number of loungers and parasols at Playa de la Arena. The beach is also equipped with nine toilets, twenty showers, a first-aid post, and, on high season, a lifeguard service. Additionally, the main road, commercial establishments, and a medical center are nearby the inlet.

Plenty of Things to Do & Places to Visit

With the commercial strip just across the road, vacationers need not go far to enjoy a cocktail right before or after hitting La Arena beach. It has an active day and nightlife hosted by the dozens of bars, pubs, and restaurants in the area. In the evening, family-friendly bars with karaoke and/or live performances typically pull the crowd.

If you enjoy water sports or want to learn a new one, Playa de la Arena is an ideal place to do so. Many tourists try windsurfing, water-skiing, and paragliding during the high season. It also serves as the playground to several diving clubs due to the rich marine life in the area and the jaw-dropping volcanic rocks that envelop the beach. Another popular option is snorkeling, a more economical and low-commitment activity that allows vacationers to admire the endemic species dwelling in its unique seabed.

Los Gigantes Cliff of the Giants – ©amoklv

Moreover, vacationers can visit other nearby waterfront attractions to experience the various characteristics of the Tenerife coastline. El Charco de Isla Cangrejois perfect for less confident swimmers as its pool serves as protection from crashing waves. On the other hand, Cueva del Tancón, or simply El Tancón, is a volcanic sea cave that must only be admired and left untested. Swimming is not allowed here due to the deadly and unforeseeable behavior of its waters.

Additionally, visiting the viewpoints close by is something all holidaymakers must try as it affords the island’s best panoramic views. Mirador Archipenqueand Mirador Puerto de los Gigantes are two of the best in this side of Tenerife and are excellent spots for admiring Los Gigantes. They also offer incredible views of the town and the harbor, but the latter is much lower and closer to the sea. FYI: The Los Gigantes marina has whale- and dolphin-watching tours on offer vacationers can avail.

If the walk to the observation decks isn’t enough and your senses crave more outdoor exposure, completing the Masca walking trail may be a great activity for you. The track is set in a ravine in the Natural Park of Teno and can extend down to the sea, where a boat can be arranged to bring you back to one of the coastal towns. This hike takes between 3 to 6 hours to complete, depending on how experienced the hiker is, and goes through a long path that includes some of the most challenging terrains in Tenerife, so it’s not for the faint of heart.

Weather in Playa de la Arena

The weather in Playa de la Arena is pleasant and warm almost all year round, peaking at 24°C in August or September. As expected, the temperatures drop during winter, but not by much at approximately 20°C.

Dining Options

Just behind Playa de la Arena is a commercial avenue with plenty of restaurants and cafes serving international or Canarian cuisine. While surrounded by all-inclusive hotels, the gastronomic scene in this family-friendly resort is tempting enough to have vacationers exploring. Plus, experiencing the local culture through food is a massive part of holidaying in Tenerife, especially if you go for traditional dishes.

Poggetto Ristorante Italiano

Chef Michele of Poggetto Ristorante is originally from Tuscany. Together with his son and wife, they bring a taste of Italy and its well-known hospitality to La Arena beach.

Dining in Poggetto was a positive experience that started with seafood salad. It had calamari, prawns, veggies, fruits, and a squeeze of lemon to balance the taste of the meat proteins. We then devoured truffle tagliatelle, burrata ravioli, and cod with pistachio dressing. These dishes all seem so uncomplicated yet incredibly delicious and luxurious, making you feel like you’re cheating at life with every bite.

Additionally, there’s an evident mastery of pasta in this restaurant. The swirl of noodles and stuffed pasta parcels are handmade and just had enough sauce to keep everything well-lubricated. More importantly,  the sauce is fresh and bursting with flavors with a good hint of garlic and basil.

The wines, which are also all from Tuscany, and dessert on offer at Poggetto Ristorante must be celebrated as well. I had a glass of Borgobruno, a perfect pair to my pasta, and mojito sorbet to end my lovely Playa de la Arena dinner.

La Quinta Restaurante

Walking along the commercial avenue behind Playa de la Arena as the waves roll into the shore, we decided to try La Quinta a little before lunch service. We read online that it is the go-to restaurant for unique rice dishes in Puerto Santiago, and we were not disappointed. It is truly a place you go to for an authentic yet unique culinary experience.

As you enter the ocean-front restaurant, you’ll immediately be welcomed by the vibrancy of Mireya, the owner, and assisted by a pleasant waitstaff. The food already on other tables will also surely catch your attention, as they smell and look appetizing.

Known to put a creative twist on traditional Spanish and Canarian dishes, we decided to try La Quinta’s version of our familiar favorites. The croquettes filled with goat meat sauce and topped with lemon mayonnaise were refreshing, while the rib-eye steak with cinnamon was unusual yet insanely delicious. For the rice dish, we ordered pork rib and sausage paella. It isn’t something new but nonetheless above average.

La Quinta has a great selection of local wines on offer and knowledgeable staff that can help you decide which one is best for your taste. You can also opt for a cup of coffee like I did. No one can deny that coffee pairs well with anything.

Delhi Darbar

Delhi Darbar is an Indian restaurant a few minutes walk away from Playa de la Arena and is also along Avenida Marítima Puerto de Santiago. The signage with its name and the slogan “experience wow!!” lights up the street, the friendly staff welcoming you in with a lovely smile. It’s a reasonably sized place that’s pretty packed, even on a Tuesday night.

After scouring the Delhi Darbar menu, my famished group chose papadums and mango chutney to get us going. A pint of Cobra beer for me and a glass of house white and red wine for the rest. We got the tandoori mix grill to share for starter, which arrived piping hot and smelling incredible.

For our mains, we went for pilau rice, naan, and lamb methi to share. The lamb was succulent and rich in aromatic herbs but with just enough spiciness for us. After the first bite, there was no question in my mind why this is a strong hit with diners. To mix our dinner up a bit, we ordered a hearty saag aloo side dish. It’s mildly spiced yet tastes so delicious.

We were stuffed after this Indian feast and wholly convinced that the Delhi Darbar’s flavor-packed menu can win over anyone.

How to Reach Playa de Arena

Playa de la Arena is an accessible urban beach. It’s only a 30-minute drive away from Tenerife South Airport, while it takes more than an hour when coming from Tenerife North Airport, also known as Los Rodeos Airport, via taxi or rental car.

If you prefer going by public transport, vacationers coming from TFS must ride the bus line 111 then get on bus line 473 in Costa Adeje. The entire trip would take almost 2 hours. On the other hand, it takes around 3 hours to reach La Arena beach from TFN via bus lines 20, 110, then 473. All routes mentioned have a bus every 30 minutes.

Untapped Paradise with Modern Comforts

The sunny Playa de la Arena has natural black sand, warm waters, and an uncrowded bay. There are great local and international restaurants for hearty meals, light snacks, and cold beverages just across the beach, along with exciting attractions a short distance away. While modern comforts are undoubtedly in abundance, it’s still an untapped paradise, with other big tourist resorts in Tenerife attracting much of the vacationers.

Playa de la Arena Tourist Information and Travel Guide

Although I’m sure that at one point in the very recent past, the three resorts
destinations of Playa la Arena,

Puerto Santiago,
and

Los Gigantes
were 3 individual villages in their own right, the ever increasing demand for
holiday beds on Tenerife has seen their individual expansion to the point where,
for all intents and purposes, they have now all merged into the single resort
that is actively marketed by many tour operators under the generic name of Los
Gigantes.

Overall the three resorts are now without doubt the largest coastal development
of the municipal district of

Santiago del Teide
on the west coast of Tenerife, although technically parts of the ever expanding
Playa la Arena do now cross the border into the district of

Guia de Isora.

For most people arriving on Tenerife via the

Reina Sofia International Airport
in the south of the island, the journey over to Playa la Arena will necessitate
one of the longest resort transfers on the island, and although the main TF-1
motorway practically takes you the entire route, the geographic nature of
Tenerife dictates that it must follow within a few kilometres of the coast,
resulting in a transfer time of around 1.1/4 to 1.1/2 hours from the time you
leave the airport grounds.

This unscheduled “island tour”, although very scenic I’m sure, is however
forcing many visitors to actively consider making their own arrangements for the
journey by either pre-booked hire car, or alternatively taking one of the many
taxis from the ranks outside of the arrivals hall.

Although these taxis do all operate on a fixed price basis, this “fixed price”
can, and often does, vary slightly depending upon the number of suitcases, the
time of day or night of the journey, and of course the number of passengers
carried. It’s also worthwhile mentioning that as a rule, taxis do not normally
carry child seats, so very small children will have to sit on their parents
knees for the journey.

If this is a cause for concern, we strongly recommend that you make arrangements
for a pre-booked taxi to be waiting for you, and clearly specify at the time of
booking that a child seat is needed for the journey.

Pre-booked taxis are often a little more expensive, although as with all things
in life, you only get what you pay for.

Whatever method of transport you ultimately decide upon to make this transfer,
and as with the other resorts on the island, we have put together the basic
route for the journey, complete with links to maps where appropriate, and this
is available from the

Route Map
link on the left hand frame of this page.

Of the three resorts, Playa la Arena is probably the most modern, and visitors
may still witness a small degree of continued building works, although certainly
nothing on the same scale as the development that is currently going on
elsewhere on the island.

The name Playa la Arena literally translates into English as “Beach of Sand”,
which reflects that the resort does have one of the few natural beaches along
the west coast of Tenerife. Whilst its black volcanic sands may at first appear
off putting to some, this beach has been awarded the internationally recognised
Blue Flag for cleanliness, water quality and local amenities, every year since
1989.

At this point we would draw your attention to a fact sadly missed by many tour
operators, that being a somewhat remote island in the middle of the Atlantic,
the seas along the west coast of Tenerife do experience some very strong
undercurrents, so particular care must be exercised with weak or inexperienced
swimmers. A series of warning flags are in constant operation, and as a very
general rule green means safe, yellow warns you to be careful, and red you
mustn’t swim at all.

A point certainly worth mentioning here, is this area of Tenerife is very hilly,
and therefore may not be suitable for visitors who experience any form of
walking difficulty or equally for parents with very young children in push
chairs. Having said that, for the majority of people moving around the resort,
or further afield into either Puerto Santiago, which is little more than 1/2km
away, or the somewhat larger Los Gigantes, is very easy and relaxed.

A beachfront promenade, that is backed by a varied selection of bars and
restaurants, runs part of the way, which in turn follows the route of the
Avenida Maritima the main arterial route between the various resort centres. If
the very thought of walking between the two extremes of Playa la Arena and Los
Gigantes fills you with dread, then don’t worry too much as the

Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife
also run a very reliable bus service, and even a taxi only costs around 3€ for
the trip.

A Spanish island off the coast of West Africa, Tenerife is the biggest and most populous of the Canary Isles. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries cartographers called the island la Isla del Infernio: the island of Hell, because of the volcanic activity of Mount Teide. Fortunately, it has shed this grim name and is now a popular holiday destination with people desperate to get away from cold and rainy climates to enjoy some warmth and sunshine.

There are all sorts of deals available: from discounts on couples’ weekends to free child accommodation or half price kids’ meals on week-long family holidays, to a complimentary bottle of wine and a fruit basket: as well as finding the best price for your holiday, you will also enjoy a host of perks and additional extras that will give your last minute holiday that extra sparkle.

The Best Things to See and Do in Tenerife

    1. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

If you happen to be in Tenerife at the right time of year (about two weeks before Ash Wednesday until shortly after) in February or March, you can see the wonderful spectacle that is this carnival. Considered to be the second best known carnival after Rio de Janeiro’s colourful spectacle, the festival kicks off with a parade and continues for days until the ceremony known as the ‘burying of the sardine’ which is the official end of events. However, the party tends to continue, sparking up again at the weekend! During carnival there are a host of organised official events and a lot of street carnival events, which tends to be an expression of celebration by the local people.

    2. Loro Park

Set in the beauty of Puerto de la Cruz, this zoo started life as an aviary, specifically for parrots. It is now home to an enormous range of animals and birds, from tigers to crocodiles, chimpanzees to sea lions.

    3. Teide Mountain

The World Heritage site is open 24-hours a day and you can hike up or go by cable car to enjoy the crystal clear air and breath-taking views of the island and the distant ocean. Or you can head to the nearby observatory from which the night sky is observed and recorded. Tours of the observatory are fascinating and well worth the time investment. Should you wish to go further up, to the crater, you will need to acquire a permit well in advance.

    4. Whale Watching Tour

Book a place on a boat that will take you out to admire these immense mammals as they go majestically about their own private marine business. The tours vary in cost from €20 up to around €50 and much depends on the size of the boat, the extras included in the price and the length of the tour.

    5. Laze on the Beach

With over 400km of beaches – seventeen of which have Blue Flag status – the thing to do in Tenerife is be incredibly laze and simply lie in the sun and enjoy the warmth. Do be safe however, avoid the heat in the middle of the day and use a good quality sun screen to prevent painful sunburn. If the beach is too far away (and you are never really far away from a beach on Tenerife) grab a sun lounger by your hotel pool instead and enjoy the pool-side bar service!

    Our Practical Advice for Tenerife

The weather in Tenerife ranges from quite hot to very hot indeed, so be prepared for greater heat than you are perhaps used to, drink plenty of water, and avoid exerting yourself in the middle of the day when it is hottest.

What to pack for a last minute break in Tenerife?

With year round sunshine and warmth, pack light clothes: plenty of swimsuits, shorts, t-shirts and flip-flops. If you are going to be hiking or walking a lot, loose long-sleeved clothes will keep you protected from insects and the sun. Dress codes in Tenerife are fairly laid-back, but one or two smart outfits will ensure that you can get into any unexpected high-class places that take your fancy.

What budget to plan at the last minute?

Plan on needing about €70 or €80 per person per day after accommodation has been secured. This will cover any meals not covered by your package, and any souvenirs, day-trips and transport, so you can make the most of your holiday without fretting about running out of money.

Useful information before going to Tenerife

Tenerife is a Spanish territory and uses the euro for its currency. It is relatively safe, but do use the usual cautions and try to avoid walking about alone or in pairs late at night – there are some illegal immigrants and disenfranchised youths who take advantage of privileged visitors. However this is rare, and most people are warm, welcoming and very friendly.

The Spanish island of Tenerife is popular among couples with children, among young people, and among somewhat conservative travelers due to the huge number of vacation options.

For example, noisy companies will like such resorts as Las Americas or Costa Adeje, where nightly discos literally do not stop. But Puerto de la Cruz is more suitable for connoisseurs of tranquility and ecological tourism, since this part of the island coast has many rocks and beautiful places that are practically not “spoiled” by civilization. In addition, holidays in the Canary Islands of Tenerife 2022 have another significant plus: there is absolutely no winter here in our understanding.

So, in the winter months, temperatures are equal to +20°C, but in the summer, there is no heat typical for other popular resorts – temperatures do not exceed +25°C. It is thanks to this amazing climate that Tenerife has another name – “the island of eternal spring.”

                    Tenerife tourist infrastructure

Most of the island’s hotels are marked with 4 stars, and the service meets the highest European standards. However, the travel agency of the retail network PEGAS Touristik WTC LLC will select for you a room in a luxurious five-star hotel or more budget accommodation in a three-star hotel according to your desire.

In almost every hotel, professional animators will organize your children’s leisure time, and evening entertainment, sports events and other entertainments have been prepared for adults.

As for the rooms, almost all are equipped with air conditioning, private bathrooms, safes and wireless internet. Meals operate on two systems: “half board” and “all inclusive”, although any drinks are paid separately.

Young people will not get bored either, because the number of evening shows and discos is not inferior to noisy Ibiza.

Entertainment in Tenerife and island cuisine

Holidays in the Canary Islands Tenerife 2022 will be very popular with children who can get bored with a relaxing holiday on the beach. So, an excursion to the Tenerife Zoo will be very exciting for children, where they can admire very rare and exotic species of mammals.

But the most unusual cacti can be seen in Cactus Park, located near the city of Arona. The most mind-blowing water attractions are in the Octopus water park.

For adults, the PEGAS Touristik travel agency WTC organizes a trip to the Teide volcano, which is surrounded by a black desert. For a more conservative audience, there are also activities such as golf. No less interesting will be a boat trip, during which you can watch whales.

Holidays in the Canary Islands of Tenerife 2022 can also be devoted to gastronomic acquaintance with this part of Spain. You should definitely try the amazing Canarian wine and a special island dish, which is prepared using jacket potatoes grown in the highlands of the island, served with mojo sauce.

                              Tenerife resorts

Tenerife is the largest and most hospitable island of the Canary archipelago. Here you can find entertainment for every taste – from a relaxing family holiday in Puerto de la Cruz to unforgettable diving in the southwestern part of Tenerife, from the bustling resorts of Las Americas and Costa Adeje to the sands of Playa de la Arena, to which many attribute healing properties. Windy beaches with high waves coexist here with calm lagoons. And the largest tourist centers on the archipelago with a developed infrastructure and the famous Loro Park, which is simultaneously a zoo, a botanical garden, an oceanarium and a dolphinarium, annually attract many vacationers to the island.

Tenerife is the largest island of the Canary archipelago, it is known for its unique climate, developed resort infrastructure and a large number of attractions. Therefore, it is not surprising that the resorts of Tenerife are very popular with tourists from all over the world. About 4 million people visit the island every year. The holiday season here lasts almost all year round, in the south of the island it is always warm and sunny, the amount of precipitation is not significant. Most of the resorts are located on the south coast, with the exception of Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north.

                              Playa de las Americas

Playa de las Americas is Tenerife’s largest and youngest resort. There are many hotels of different levels of comfort, from fashionable to quite budget ones. This resort is preferred by tourists, for whom not only a good hotel and a beach are important, but also the presence of a mass of entertainment . A huge number of restaurants, clubs, discos and bars offer entertainment for every taste.

                              Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje is a resort located in the southwest of the island and adjacent to Las Americas. The city has all the conditions for a comfortable stay at any time of the year. It offers tourists a developed infrastructure – shopping centers, restaurants, discos and concert halls . Resting in Costa Adeje, you can choose between a measured beach holiday and an active one.

                              Los Gigantes

Los Gigantes is a resort in Tenerife located on the northwest coast. This is a charming little town nestled at the foot of a mountain range. This is a place for a quiet family vacation, there are no noisy discos and music until the morning. Most tourists stay in aparthotels of different levels of comfort.

                              Los Cristianos

In fact, Los Cristianos is a continuation of Las Americas. These two resorts of Tenerife have long merged into one. But at the same time, Los Cristianos has its own specifics – it is considered quieter and more fashionable , focused on family vacations.

                              El Medano

El Medano is a rather specific resort in Tenerife, thanks to the constantly blowing winds on the coast, this town is especially loved by tourists who are fond of windsurfing, kitesurfing , etc. For active recreation, all the necessary infrastructure has been created here. Hotels here are mostly budget.

                              Playa Paraiso

Playa Paraiso is a small resort located near Las Americas. This town is interesting for those who prefer a quiet holiday within the hotel. Inexpensive budget hotels offer tourists a comfortable stay at an affordable price. There is also one Las Galgas beach and nearby there is an equipped paid swimming pool with sea water.

                              Ten-Bel

Ten Bel is a small resort in Tenerife, located in the south of the island. This resort town is characterized by peace and quiet around, so it attracts those tourists who seek to relax from the hustle and bustle.

                              Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is the only major resort located in the north of the island. Unlike the south, it is cooler here, the climate is humid, and lush vegetation pleases the eye. Tourists are attracted here not so much by beach holidays as by the special atmosphere reigning here.

                              Beaches Tenerife

Tenerife is a volcanic island known throughout the world for its dark, sometimes even completely black sand. Such beaches are found on both the southern and northern coasts. It is important to consider that some of them have high waves and undercurrents – especially in the north of Tenerife, where the vast majority of beaches are wild. But, of course, there are also “tamed”. One of them is Playa de la Arena. In addition to quiet walks, this place is also suitable for general recovery – volcanic sand serves as a natural relaxant and has a beneficial effect on the state of the body, especially on the musculoskeletal system.

Tenerife also has several “bright” beaches – they are concentrated mainly in the southern part of the island and are artificially created specifically for tourists. Sand for these purposes is imported directly from the Sahara. There are golden beaches in the north of Tenerife – for example, Las Teresitas. It is located near Santa Cruz and is ideal for families. The beach is well protected from the waves and is equipped with free showers and changing cabins. The only negative is the proximity to the mountain range, because of which it is often windy and cloudy on Las Teresitas.

But the south-eastern part of the island is ideal for surfers – constant wind and long coastlines of beaches create all the conditions for practicing this sport. El Medano is recognized as a real paradise for surfers – a natural beach with yellow-orange sand. Here you can also buy all the equipment for surfing and at the same time get a couple of lessons at a special school.

By the way, absolutely all the beaches of Tenerife are municipal, so you can relax on any part of the coast that you like. Umbrellas and sun loungers are paid here (from 2 to 10 EUR depending on the beach). Also, in some places you will have to pay for the use of toilets and showers.
It is worth noting that although there are no “closed” beaches in Tenerife, some of them are quite popular with nudists. Places where it is better not to go with children and jealous girls include, for example:

Playa Blanca (aka Diego Hernandez Beach) is a calm wild beach in the south of the island. During high tide, it is almost completely hidden under water, so you should not leave your things on it for a long time.

Playa de las Gaviotas is adjacent to one of Tenerife’s most famous beaches, Las Teresitas. Nudism here is a seasonal phenomenon, reaching its peak in winter.

Playa de la Tejita is the longest natural beach on the island. Here, too, the wind blows almost constantly, but this does not prevent the beach from being one of the most popular places among connoisseurs of an even tan without stripes.

Tours in Tenerife | Tours to the Canary Islands

Holidays in Tenerife, which is rightly called a “tourist’s paradise”, opens up a lot of opportunities for all guests of the island. Someone prefers to just lie on the ocean, enjoying the gentle sun, endless azure sea, pleasant breeze and picturesque landscape, while someone longs for something exciting and unusual.

How you spend your holidays in this marvelous place will largely depend on which tour you purchase. Therefore, the selection of a tour in Tenerife must be approached thoughtfully and responsibly!

Consider what kind of tours there are in Tenerife.

According to the method of organization, tours can be divided into:

                              • Early booking of tours in Tenerife – provides for the advance purchase of tickets to the most prestigious and popular resort hotels at the most attractive prices. As a rule, the reservation is made a few months before the start of the tour, because the earlier it is, the greater the discount you can get. However, the disadvantage of early booking is that having ordered and paid for a ticket in advance, it will not be possible to make any changes to it either in terms of terms or conditions of rest.
                              • “Special Offer” is the purchase of a tour at a reduced price. Most often, special offers are provided by newly opened hotels that want to lure as many guests as possible with low prices. In addition, at a special price, you can purchase a tour to new tourist routes. In this case, a significant reduction in the price of a tour is a kind of advertising ploy that allows you to interest vacationers in new excursions, an unusual way of relaxing, or a brand that is not yet too well known.
                              • “Last Minute Tours in Tenerife is a tour for which the tour operator reduces the price many times over, for the reason that its term ends in the near future. Not wanting to lose the full cost of the travel package, the agency sells the ticket very cheaply, sometimes setting the cost of a “hot tour” below the cost of the operator.

Last minute tours in Tenerife can be found on sale throughout the year, but closer to the summer months, when the holiday season begins, the chance to get a really worthwhile ticket from among the “hot deals” increases significantly.

Such great offers go on sale quickly and are sold out instantly, because many people want to relax in one of the best resorts in the world for little money. To get the cheapest option for a trip to the island, you will have to spend a lot of effort studying travel agency sites on the Internet and calling tour operators on the phone.

As a result, your efforts will certainly be rewarded, and you will receive an excellent trip to the Canary Islands for half of its original price, and even on better terms.

The average price of a “last minute” package in Tenerife for a period of seven to twelve days in a luxurious four-star hotel, such as the Parador de La Palma, for example, will be only five hundred to eight hundred euros.

Tours in Tenerife can be divided into:

Tours can be divided into: beach and sightseeing, medical and sports, family and wedding, gastronomic and shop tours.

                              Beach tours in Tenerife

Taking advantage of this tour, you can soak up the soft sand, enjoy the warm sea and the gentle sun on the best beaches of the island, such as Playa del Duque, Playa del Medano or Playa de las Teresitas. And lovers of extreme sports and thrills will be able to arrange an active holiday in the form of windsurfing, diving, kiteboarding and fishing.

Review of: Castillo de San Gabriel

Did not go in, but enjoyed the experience

Thursday 13th January we were exploring and sightseeing in Arrecife and we visited here.

This Castle is one of the main attractions in the City and is located on the small island of Islet de los Ingleses (Islet of the English).

There are two causeways which led to the to the Castle. We walked across to the Island by means of the causeway used by vehicles. We walked back to the promenade along the pedestrian causeway which is known as Puente de las Bolas (Ball Bridge) and the drawbridge.

The 16th century stone fortress is now a museum. We spoke to a very nice lady, who worked in the museum, she could speak in a number of languages. She advised us that normally there would be an entrance fee of €3 per person. However, they were not charging at the moment as the castle was recently broken into and the cash machine vandalised.

If we were going to enter the Museum, then the Lady would have given us a brief summary of the history and how to proceed around the Museum in accordance with COVID restrictions and regulations. Sadly we did not go into the museum due to our time constraints. We did enjoy getting up close to the old Castle.

One of the features of the castle are the two large cannon guns standing on duty outside the entrance.

The was also a small sandy beach nearby the front of the castle.

      not a must, but nice

while the exhibition was interesting, but nothing wow (4 € entrance fee p.p.), the setting in the dark rooms of this old castle is very nice. there is also a very nicely done restaurant downstairs with great interior and a beautiful window front on the harbour (unfortunately there is little nice to see there). all together worth a short stop for sure.

      Marina excellent, shopping centre rubbish

The marina is superb. The variety of boats is amazing, with size varying from small to rather large. Some fabulous craft in ther. Take a camera.
However, the shopping centre, lauded as something special, is anything but that. It’s not a centre where one can wander around under cover from shop to shop, but individual shops and cafes etc linked under one roof, each of which can only be entered from the outside. All high-end clothing, as are the majority of restaurants and cafes. Plainly built to cater for all the well-off boat owners in the adjacent marina. And it blows a gale around the centre. Locals all say it’s overpriced and does not cater for the ordinary people of Lanzarote, despite what you might read in the travel brochures. Do not waste your time and money, but do see the marina itself

The Castillo de San Gabriel, a tribute to the history of Arrecife

The Castillo de San Gabriel, one of Lanzarote’s oldest fortresses, rises above the calm waters of the bay of Arrecife, on an islet which the locals (or conejeros) call ‘del Castillo’. To the older islanders however it was always known as the Islote del Quemado—a reference to the devastating fire suffered during an attack by the feared Ottoman corsair Morato Arráez in 1586. Down the centuries, English, French and Dutch pirates also faced the cannons of San Gabriel, but the resounding defeat of the British Rear Admiral Horatio Nelson, on the nearby coast of Tenerife, marked the beginning of the end for piracy at the close of the eighteenth century. Nowadays the Castle stands as an essential stopping-off point, not only for the Museo de Historia which it has housed since 1972, but also because of the breathtaking views from its rooftop of both the island’s white capital city and the immense Atlantic Ocean.

A history of pirates and corsairs

If you hadn’t already realised it, a good proportion of Lanzarote’s place names reflect a distinctly military character. Although many will disagree, the name of the island itself originates from the lanza rota [broken lance] of the Norman conqueror Jean de Bethancourt when he landed on the island in 1402. Other similar examples can be found around Arrecife’s waterfront, the hub of the present capital. One is the popular Reducto urban beach, whose name reminds us of the huge wall that, in the age of the pirates, would shield the soldiers from enemy attack, or the Puente de las Bolas, whose famous balls are nothing less than the cannon balls regularly used to repel attacks by pirates. This bridge leads us to the Castillo de San Gabriel, a fortress built in 1573—at the request of the Captain-General from whom it takes its name—in response to the devastating attack by the Berber pirate Dogalí two years earlier.

We have only touched on the beginning of a centuries-long story, in which pirate incursions into the port of Arrecife became a regular feature. The Castillo de San Gabriel was to be one of the first fortresses in the Canary Islands purposely built to counteract this menace, spurred on by the same Christian mounted forces which, with the consent of Carlos V, were advancing on the coast of North Africa.

El Castillo de San Gabriel through history

Nowadays, the Castillo de San Gabriel is accessed via two distinct roads, one for traffic and the other for pedestrians. While the first is an unprepossessing structure, the other has been known, since it was built in 1771, as the Puente de las Bolas: a small drawbridge with two cannon balls mounted on its pillars. This, along with the Castle itself, has held the status of a National Historic Heritage Site since 1972.

Leaving the sea some 175 metres behind us, we arrive at the fortress which Don Agustín de Herrera y Rojas (the first Count and Marquis of Lanzarote) ordered to be constructed in 1573, in response to the imminent threat from pirates. Although the first version was made from wood, and as might be expected, was burnt down ten years later under siege from Morato Arráez, there is no question that the second version, built in 1591, was built to last. The work of the Italian engineer Leonardo Torriani, who was sent by Philip II to restore the island’s precarious defence system, the new castle incorporated important innovations, evidence of which can still be seen. A primitive bridge, which predated the above-mentioned Puente de las Bolas, was built and provided with six cannons, whilst the towers were rebuilt in stone. On the flat roof formed by the second floor, there are still signs of the alterations—two gunboats and an exquisite belfry with a solid bell inside. Nowadays it is an object of admiration but in the Archipelago’s dark past, the locals would ring the bell vigorously when the dreaded pirates were sighted on the horizon.

The Museo de Historia, or the legacy of Juan Brito

Some will immediately recognise the figure of Juan Brito as the donor of a significant proportion of the cultural treasures now held in the Museo Arqueológico y Etnográfico del Castillo de San Gabriel [Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum]—officially the Museo de Historia de Arrecife since 2014. Juan Brito was a self-educated Canary Islander born in 1919 who, from a young age, felt compelled to scour his native island from dawn to dusk in order to gain an understanding of its past. He made some great discoveries, such as the colonies of fossils in Punta de Papagayo in 1958, and the engraved pre-Hispanic stone made on the order of the native king Zonzomas, which he found in 1962. In 1972 he gifted his entire collection, consisting of thousands of archaeological finds, to the Museum which was then preparing to open.

Today at the museum’s entrance, as a reminder of the building’s military history, there stand two heavy brass shells which were brought here at the end of the Second World War. Once inside the castle, a tour of the various rooms (and their collection of over 3,000 items) transports us back to the different periods in the island’s history: pre-Hispanic remains, most of them from the majos (the name given to the original inhabitants of Lanzarote) including idols, symbolic adornments and primitive tools, as well as Castilian and Andalusian ceramics dating from the early years of the conquest of the Canary Islands. It is also worth mentioning the scale models and facsimiles of historical documents that provide a concise explanation of the capital’s development, from its fishing and agricultural origins to its present status as a popular tourist destination.

Finally, an interesting titbit: in 1973, Juan Brito was appointed as the Official Custodian of the lava fields and landscapes of the Island of Lanzarote and, following his suggestion, houses on Lanzarote have been painted white ever since.

    Castles

The Castillo de San Gabriel is situated in the centre, inside is the history museum for the capital. The impressive drawbridge is called the Puente de las bolas and was constructed in 1599 by engineer Leonardo Torriani as part of the city’s defense against pirate attacks. The name refers to the balls resting on top of the pillars.

Castillo de San José is the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) and situated overlooking the port, there is a bar and restaurant which you can visit separately as well as the art exhibitions. This 18th century castle is also often used for entertainment as a concert hall.

    Market

The beautiful little La Recova market is hidden away in the centre, accessed by small passageways. There is a selection of artisan craft shops together with a fresh food market on the weekdays and a second hand market on a Saturday.

The Saturday morning market is stretched out along the pedestrian streets between Leon y Castillo and Charco San Ginés. Here you can find traditional crafts, fresh produce and handmade goods.

    Charco San Ginés

The sea water lagoon known as El Charco de San Ginés is a beautiful open space just off the city centre. Here you will find small boats moored and tapas bars. In the summer there are entertaining jolatero races and the men playing with their model sailing boats. Look out for the alley way back to the San Ginés church called El Aguaresío.

    The Kiosk

The Quiosco de la Música (music kiosk) is a bandstand on the seafront in Arrecife. The one standing today is a replica built in the 1960’s. Currently home to a tourist information office.

    Skate Park

The Parque Temático is situated at the far end of the beach, directly opposite the bus stop and Cabildo. This is a large area with skateboard ramp, children’s play park, excercise equipment , sculptures and gardens. Check out the green grass!

    Shopping

Shopping in Arrecife is best on a Saturday morning when the market is on or in an evening, there’s a lovely atmosphere with pavement cafés, a mixture of shops from surf, designer, fashion, household, shoes and more.

Arrecife – Travel guide at Wikivoyage

Arrecife is Lanzarote’s capital and a vibrant cosmopolitan city. With around 61,000 inhabitants (2019), it is by far the largest town on the island and an important commercial and administrative center. Most visitors to Lanzarote will only get to know Arrecife Airport; the city doesn’t have many attractions to offer.

    Understand[edit]

    Avenida de César Manrique

About 40% of Lanzarote’s population lives in Arrecife, so it is more of a busy, functional city than a picturesque fantasy resort. Nevertheless it has a lovely beach and seafront, and with buses to everywhere on the island, makes a fine base for exploration.

Arrecife is on the southeast coast of the island. There was a small fishing settlement here as early as the 15th century, and their boats found shelter from pirates in the small bays behind rocks and reefs. The Castillo de San Gabriel was built at the end of the 16th century; it is on a small offshore island. The church of San Ginés was built around 1630 and the fortress of San José was built around 1770. In 1812 Arrecife received city rights. Arrecife became the island capital in 1852, when it replaced the inland city of Teguise.

    By plane[edit]

    • 28.950738-13.6057661 Arrecife Airport (ACE IATA), Apartado de Correos 86 (5 km west, via LZ-2), +34 913211000, [email protected]. The island’s only airport. (updated Feb 2017)

The city is a 10-min bus ride from the airport.

    By ship[edit]

    • 28. 971492-13.5263432 Arrecife. Trasmediterranea, Naviera Armas (updated Feb 2017)

    By bus[edit]

    • Arrecife buses. The island’s bus network is centred on the capital. There are two main bus stations: (updated Jan 2020)
      • 28.966963-13.5516743 Estación de Guaguas. The main bus station for the city. (updated Jan 2020)
      • 28.957825-13.5619114 Intercambiador de Guaguas. Many routes also stop at the Interchange station near the beach (Playa del Reducto). (updated Jan 2020)

    Get around[edit]

    28°57′36″N 13°33′0″W

    Map of Arrecife

Arrecife is quite small and almost anywhere of tourist interest is within walking distance.

Beyond that, regular bus services exist; see info under “Get in”, above.

If you like a bit of history, then Arrecife is the place.

    Promenade[edit]

A stroll along the promenade takes you to the city’s main attractions. Start at the ocher-coloured building of the island government in the west. There are parking spaces and a large bus station nearby. In order from west to east along the coastal road:

    • The Parque Temático with its statues is beautifully planted, there is a large children’s playground and a skate ramp
    • The Playa del Reducto is a large sandy bay whose light sand invites you to swim, but the water quality is not always the best.
    • The Grand Hotel is the only high-rise building in Lanzarote. From the bar on the 17th floor you have a nice view over the city and can’t see the concrete block of the building.
    • The small Parque Islas Canarias was created based on designs by the artist César Manrique.
    • Behind the Club Naútico then begins Parque Municipal or Parque José Ramirez Cerdá, here you can sometimes find market stalls in which otherwise expensive brands are sold at the lowest prices. Their authenticity is doubtful.

Castillo de San Gabriel with the Puente de las Bolas

    • 28.956486-13.5478661 Castillo de San Gabriel. Historic fort guarding the harbour, now containing the local history museum. The Castillo de San Gabriel was built on a reef in 1573 to protect against pirates. It didn’t do much good, as it was destroyed in 1586. The building visible today was built between 1590 and 1599. Access is via the Puente de las Bolas, a drawbridge with large stone balls. (updated Jan 2020)
    • Further east is the port, Puerto de Naos.
    • The Castillo San José was built between 1776 and 1779, it was remodelled by César Manrique and houses a museum of contemporary art. It is open daily from 11:00-21:00, entry is free
    • The Calle León y Castillo is also often referred to as Calle Real . Near the Puente de las Bolas there are some interesting old houses, further into town you will find modern concrete buildings, in which shopping malls are housed, whose range of goods is tailored to the needs of the islanders.

    Iglesia de San Ginés

    • The Iglesia San Ginés is located between Calle Real and Charco de Ginés. The main church of Arrecife stands on the site of a 17th-century chapel; in its current form it was completed in the 19th century. It is open during the day from 09:00-13:00, and from 17:00-20:00.

If you like shopping, then Arrecife is the place to buy designer wear at low prices. Arrecife Market is another place to bargain hunt.

In the shopping street Calle León y Castillo or Calle Real you will find a wide range of goods, mainly tailored to the needs of the locals. Cosmetics and cigarettes are particularly cheap, the price level corresponds to that of the airport duty-free shops, but the same quantity restrictions apply to duty-free goods when you return home. There are also numerous small shops along the promenade.

In the shopping centre Buganvillas are more likely to be found for everyday needs. If you are looking for Canarian specialties such as mojo sauce or almogrote, you will find it in normal supermarkets.
