Graphic detail | Daily chart
IT IS NOT a good season for Europe’s skiers. Those hoping to enjoy winter sports after Christmas were left high and snowless—and what little snow there was had melted. After a mild autumn, a record-breaking heatwave moved into much of Europe towards the end of December. It came at the end of what has been the hottest year on record in Britain, France, Ireland and Spain, according to national weather services. The continent experienced its second-hottest year since records began in 1950, according to Copernicus, the EU’s Earth-observation programme.
As 2023 began, temperatures in Europe were more freakish still. On January 1st eight countries recorded their warmest-ever January day—by huge margins. In Switzerland the average maximum temperature from December 14th to January 10th was 1.6°C higher than the average of the same 28-day period between 2012 and 2021 (see chart). In Bulgaria, the average maximum temperature since December 14th was 9.4°C, compared with an average of 4.6°C for the previous 11 years. On New Year’s Day Poland exceeded its highest previous temperature before sunrise. Warsaw, the capital, ultimately hit 18.9°C, a full 5°C above the previous record. In Bilbao, Spain, temperatures of 25°C outstripped average temperatures for January by 10°C. Several meteorologists described the heatwave as one of the most extreme weather events in European history.
Climate change is almost certainly to blame, although its impact on this heatwave has not yet been assessed by scientists. Unusually high sea-surface temperatures and La Niña, a weather pattern that typically brings warmer winter winds to Europe, may have contributed to the heatwave. Both of these may be influenced by climate change, too—but it is not yet clear how. What is certain, however, is that rising global temperatures—caused by humans pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere—are making heatwaves more frequent, and more intense. Because the world is now, on average, about 1.3°C warmer than before the industrial revolution, temperatures can spike to levels that would previously have been unimaginable.
In Europe temperatures are rising twice as fast as the global average. This year, European leaders may have welcomed that. The heatwave has helped lessen the impact in Europe of the energy crisis. Less demand for heating has meant that Europe has only had to pump half as much gas out of storage than in the previous two winters. In a period in which energy is scarce and prices are exceptionally high, warm weather may help Europe keep the lights on for now. In the long run it will cause more harm than good. ■

Catholic : His legend is that he was born into a noble Roman family in the third century. While still a child, Ansanus was secretly baptized by his nurse Maxima (venerated as Saint Maxima of Rome) and secretly brought up as a Christian. Ansan openly proclaimed his Christian faith during the persecution of Diocletian when he was nineteen years old. According to tradition, Saint Ansanus preached the Gospel at Bagnoregio (then Bagnorea), and the church of Santa Maria delle Carseri at the Alban Gate is said to have been built over the prison in which he was held. The national holiday of Romania, the Great Union Day (also called Unification Day) occurring on December 1, celebrates this event. The holiday was established after the Romanian Revolution, and marks the unification not only of Transylvania, but also of the provinces of Banat, Bessarabia and Bukovina with the Romanian Kingdom. These other provinces had all joined with the Kingdom of Romania earlier in 1918, and the Union of Transylvania with Romania thus resulted in the final unification of the entire country. Monday 25 December, 2023
Catholic or Protestant : Since prehistoric times in Europe
the beginning of longer days was marked by various celebrations and rituals. The Roman festival of Saturnalia lasted for several days in December. The Germanic tribes also celebrated the middle of winter. Bulgarians (with caroling) and Poles (with Gwiazdka) continued this tradition. Jesus of Nazareth was born around the springtime. But in the fourth century, December 25 was chosen to celebrate his birth by Pope Julius I. Thus the element of Christianity was introduced into the long-established midwinter celebrations. Until 1582, many Italian cities celebrated New Year and Christmas on the same day. nine0005

The price of gas in Europe at the end of December 2022 fell by 48% compared to the end of November and amounted to about $845 per 1,000 cubic meters, according to data from the London ICE exchange on January and February futures and TASS calculations. Gran Canaria is a winter-sun destination, and so you’ll find December is pleasantly warm. Pack a hoody and light rain jacket just in case. The sea is warmer than you might expect and is comfortable for swimming, but beaches are typically quiet. We’ve looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Gran Canaria, covering the last 12 years up to 2023, plus we’ve asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Gran Canaria weather in December.
It was warm in the day we still wore shorts but colder at night. We did actually swim in the pool on Boxing Day but it was rather chilly!

I would recommend summer clothes but long sleeve clothes for the evening. For women, Maxi Dresses are lovely for the evening but pack your cardigans too. I’d also pack long trousers or leggings for after dark, with long sleeved tops. We didn’t need a coat. Men can wear shorts and t-shirts but also long sleeved shirts for the evenings

Speed cameras if you hire a car! We went over Christmas and you could get a traditional Christmas dinner if you wanted one, as well as Spanish cuisine

The temperature is extremely stable in December with average highs of 20℃ and lows just 3℃ lower at 17℃. The UV index will be moderate at this time of year, so not something to worry about for the average person. However, if you’re going to be outside for long periods it’s worth wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses. Remember that bright surfaces, such as water and sand increase UV exposure.
The answer is no. Gran Canaria is typically bone dry in December. You’re not likely to see a thunderstorm during your trip.
You’re unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during December. With moderate humidity and mild air temperatures, the breeze will have a slight cooling effect.
The water around Gran Canaria is around 21℃ during December. It will feel a little on the cool when first entering, but you’ll warm up quickly. Most kids will have no problem with this temperature, but those who feel the cold are unlikely to want to swim.
