  Where is the coldest place on Earth?

  Hardly the most popular holiday hotspots, these places are known for their extreme cold. If you are planning a visit, grab a blanket and get ready to hunker down – they hold the record for the coldest temperatures ever recorded.

  1) Eastern Antarctic Plateau, Antarctica (-94°C)

  The Eastern Antarctic Plateau claims the title of coldest place on Earth. Between 2004 and 2016, satellite data collected across Dome Argus and Dome Fuji, an area around the size of Australia, suggest that air temperatures could be around -94°C. This would be the coldest temperature on Earth, but researchers think that with the dry air around the area, it could cause temperatures to get even colder.

  2) Vostok Station Antarctica (-89.2°C)

  Part of the Southern Pole of Cold, an area in the southern hemisphere with the lowest-recorded surface temperatures, the Vostok research station was created by the Soviet Union in 1957. Thermometers here reached a low of -89.2°C in July 1983, the lowest air temperature ever directly recorded. It is also one of the driest places on Earth, receiving around 20 millimetres of precipitation a year, all of which is snow.

  3) Amundsen-Scott Station, Antarctica (-82.8°C)

  Located on the South Pole, the Amundsen-Scott Station was built in 1956 and gets six months of sunlight in the summer and six months of total darkness in the winter months. The highest temperature recorded on this part of the East Antarctic Plateau was on Christmas Day in 2011, where thermometers rose to a positively balmy -12.3°C. The coldest on record was -82.8°C in June 1982.

  4) Denali, Alaska, United States of America (-73°C)

  Denali, formerly known as Mount McKinley, is the highest mountain peak in North America, more than 6000 metres above sea level. With an average temperature of around -10°C, only half the people who attempt to climb this mountain actually make it to the peak. Between 1950 and 1969, a weather station there picked up a temperature of around -73°C, but wind chills can be as low as -83.4°C.

  5) Klinck station, Greenland (-69.6°C)

  The Klinck weather station holds the record for the coldest place in the Arctic Circle. Located in central Greenland, it beat the previous record held by Oymyakon (see below) by around 2 degrees in December 1991, reaching -69.6°C. Despite these cold temperatures, much of Greenland’s ice is melting rapidly.

  6) Oymyakon, Siberia, Russia (-67.7°C)

  Oymyakon is the coldest permanently-inhabited place on Earth and is found in the Arctic Circle’s Northern Pole of Cold. In 1933, it recorded its lowest temperature of -67.7°C. With a population of below 500, schools will shut only if it’s colder than -55°C, which can be the average minimum temperature during the winter.

  7) North Ice, Greenland (-66.1°C)

  This research station, set up during the British North Greenland Expedition in the 1950s, held the record low temperature in North America at the time. In 1954, the temperature plunged to -66.1°C.

  8) Yakutsk, Siberia, Russia (-64.4°C)

  Yakutsk is one of the coldest cities on Earth and located on permafrost. Although the region experiences some short but warm summers, with temperatures in 2011 reaching up to 38.4°C, it also has long and extremely cold winters. In 1891, temperatures dropped to -64.4°C. Located along the Lena river, during the winter months it is often cold enough for the river to freeze and become strong enough to be used as a road.

  9) Snag, Yukon Territory, Canada (-62.8°C)

  In 1947, the small village of Snag in the Yukon of northwest Canada was home to around 10 First Nation people. The village was used as an emergency landing strip during second world war and later as a weather station, where temperatures as low as -62.8°C were recorded, prompting researchers to get their equipment retested to make sure it was working correctly.

  10) Prospect Creek, Alaska, United States of America (-62.1°C)

  Built as a settlement for workers of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System in the late 1970s, the village is now practically deserted. In January 1971, a frosty -62.1°C was recorded and the settlement still claims some of the coldest winter temperatures in the USA.

  WMO releases ‘tell-tale signs’ of extreme weather conditions around the world

  The clear need to do much more to cut greenhouse gas emissions was again underscored throughout events in 2022, said the UN weather agency, advocating for strengthened climate change adaptation, including universal access to early warnings.

  “This year we have faced several dramatic weather disasters which claimed far too many lives and livelihoods and undermined health, food, energy and water security and infrastructure”, said WMO chief Petteri Taalas.

  While Global temperature figures for 2022 will be released in mid-January, the past eight years are on track to be the eight warmest on record, according to WMO.

  While the persistence of a cooling La Niña event, now in its third year, means that 2022 will not be the warmest year on record, its cooling impact will be short-lived and not reverse the long-term warming trend caused by record levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

  Moreover, this will be the tenth successive year that temperatures have reached at least 1°C above pre-industrial levels – likely to breach the 1.5°C limit of the Paris Agreement.

  Early warnings

  Early warnings, increasing investment in the basic global observing system and building resilience to extreme weather and climate will be among WMO priorities in 2023 – the year that the WMO community celebrates its 150th anniversary.

  “There is a need to enhance preparedness for such extreme events and to ensure that we meet the UN target of Early Warnings for All in the next five years”, said the top WMO official.

  WMO will also promote a new way of monitoring the sinks and sources of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide by using the ground-based Global Atmosphere Watch, satellite and assimilation modelling, which allows better understanding of how key greenhouse gases behave in the atmosphere.

  Climate Indicators

  Greenhouse gases are just one climate indicator used to observe levels.

  Sea levels, which have doubled since 1993; ocean heat content; and acidification are also at recorded highs.

  The past two and a half years alone account for 10 per cent of overall sea level rise since satellite measurements started nearly 30 years ago, said WMO’s provisional State of the Global Climate in 2022 report.

  And 2022 took an exceptionally heavy toll on glaciers in the European Alps, with initial indications of record-shattering melt.

  The Greenland ice sheet lost mass for the 26th consecutive year and it rained –rather than snowed – on the summit for the first time in September.

  National heat tolls

  Although 2022 did not break global temperature records, it topped many national heat records throughout the world.

  India and Pakistan experienced soaring heat in March and April. China had the most extensive and long-lasting heatwave since national records began and the second-driest summer on record. 

  And parts of the northern hemisphere were exceptionally hot and dry.

  A large area centred around the central-northern part of Argentina, as well as in southern Bolivia, central Chile, and most of Paraguay and Uruguay, experienced record-breaking temperatures during two consecutive heatwaves in late November and early December 2022. 

  “Record breaking heatwaves have been observed in China, Europe, North and South America”, the WMO chief added. “The long-lasting drought in the Horn of Africa threatens a humanitarian catastrophe

  And while large parts of Europe sweltered in repeated episodes of extreme heat, the United Kingdom hit a new national record in July, when the temperature topped more than 40°C for the very first time.

  Record breaking rain

  In East Africa, rainfall has been below average throughout four consecutive wet seasons – the longest in 40 years – triggering a major humanitarian crisis affecting millions of people, devastating agriculture, and killing livestock, especially in Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

  Record breaking rain in July and August led to extensive flooding in Pakistan, which caused at least 1,700 deaths, displaced 7.9 million and affected 33 million people.

  “One third of Pakistan was flooded, with major economic losses and human casualties”, reminded Mr. Taalas.

  FRANKFURT/MADRID, Feb 2 (Reuters) – Beleaguered wind turbine maker Siemens Gamesa (SGREN. MC), soon to be delisted and folded into parent Siemens Energy (ENR1n.DE), said on Thursday its first-quarter net loss more than doubled on higher warranty provisions as a result of faulty components.

  The net loss in the October-December period, Siemens Gamesa’s fiscal first quarter, widened to 884 million euros ($974 million) from 403 million in the same period last year, the company said.

  The company last month flagged increased failure rates of unspecified components of its installed onshore and offshore wind turbines, triggering higher warranty provisions that have also plagued Danish rival Vestas (VWS.CO).

  “The negative development in our service business underscores that we have much work ahead of us to stabilize our business and return to profitability,” said Siemens Gamesa Chief Executive Jochen Eickholt, who joined from Siemens Energy last year.
