Big waves in Bajamar, Tenerife (March 2019)

Bajamar is a small town and resort in Tenerife, which is especially popular among German tourists and also among tourists coming from the Nordic countries in Europe.

Bajamar is located in the very north of Tenerife, close to Punta del Hidalgo and is part of the municipality San Cristobal de La Laguna.

The tourism in Bajamar is very different from the noisy and busy south of Tenerife; here most of the noises come from the ocean, which is truly an incredible spectacle to watch on most days.

Bajamar is a pretty tranquil place to stay in Tenerife, an ideal location for people who want to relax, enjoy nature and do some hiking, as you have the Anaga Rural Park nearby.

In Bajamar you won’t find any all-inclusive hotels, instead, you’ll mostly find private apartments and holiday homes, so we recommend checking Airbnb if you want to look for accommodation in the area.

What to do in Bajamar

Best things to do in Bajamar: surf, relax and enjoy the natural pools.

Life is simple in Bajamar and much quieter and laid back compared to the continuous buzz of the southern resorts. So if you’re looking for a more remote and quiet place to stay in Tenerife, take Bajamar into account.

In Bajamar you are not totally cut off from civilization, in the sense that you’d still be staying in a small coastal town, with bars and shops and restaurants, but the entire feeling of the place is totally different from what you can find in Tenerife South. 

There are a lot of Canarian residents living in Bajamar, so the place still feels authentic and retains its Spanish atmosphere. In terms of visitors, most of them come from Germany and Scandinavia, so you will find less British visitors in Bajamar. 

Bajamar would also be a good base for anyone interested in hiking in Tenerife since the north has the most amazing trails and footpaths.

Rental prices are also lower in Bajamar compared to places like Costa Adeje or Los Cristianos, so it’s also a good option for anyone looking for an affordable place to stay in Tenerife, especially if you plan to stay for longer and you want to rent an apartment.

Although it’s situated in the North of Tenerife, Bajamar is still much warmer in winter than most other places in Europe. So if you’re not looking to sunbathe every day, but instead you just want to escape the dead cold winters of Northern Europe, Bajamar could be the place where you can rent an apartment for one or two months and stay here comfortably to relax and enjoy the laid back pace of Tenerife (especially if you’re a digital nomad or you switch to online remote work for a few months a year).

The natural pool in Bajamar

The natural pool is the top local attraction and the reason why many visitors come to Bajamar even for a short visit. It is a lovely natural pool, with seawater, where you can enjoy swimming without having to worry about currents or waves. 

There’s no entrance fee so everyone can enjoy the natural pool in Bajamar for free.

You’ll even find showers and toilets next to the pools and there are lifeguards on site even in winter.

The natural pool is the main attraction in Bajamar and there’s a nice promenade in front, where you can just sit and admire the huge waves coming in and breaking when they hit the concrete.

Playa Bajamar is the beach right next to the pool and it’s probably the most photographed place in Bajamar (see the first photo in this article). The big waves come crushing with a strong force in the stone wall that protects the beach, which creates the potential for dramatic photography. 

Between the natural pool and the beach, you can see the Bajamar lighthouse.

What to see in Bajamar. Nature, hiking and coast

Following the route by some emblematic villages of northern Tenerife, Bajamar is a place you like to know and also has bathing areas, ideal for hot days.

A little information about Bajamar

The small town of Bajamar is located in the northern part of Tenerife, within the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna It is quite frequented by German tourists, many of whom have a holiday home in this area of the island where you can enjoy beautiful sunsets, with the nature very present in all the surroundings. Here also reigns the tranquility, being a coastal town of scarce inhabitants.

The population of Bajamar surpasses by little the 2,000 inhabitants, and has a total area of 2. 08 square kilometers.

The town of Bajamar is adjacent to some of the other villages that we talked about previously in our blog, such as Tegueste, Tejina or Punta del Hidalgo. In addition it is only fourteen kilometers from the center of the municipality, the beautiful university town of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, a must visit for all tourists visiting Tenerife.

What to see in Bajamar

Natural pools of Bajamar

One of the most representative points of this small coastal town are its natural pools, which are quite large and in which you will find room with ease if you want to take a bath in them. However, in Bajamar there are not so many chances that you will find an optimal sunny day for bathing as you will find in other areas of the island.

It is also necessary to mention that parking is complicated in this area, especially at weekends, holidays and summer.

Faro de Bajamar

The Lighthouse of Bajamar provides, at least, a picturesque stamp for the visitors of this small northern town.

Playa de San Juan or Playa de Bajamar

In addition to the natural pools, Bajamar also has a beach that is also quite calm waters, due to the dam that protects it from the strong waves that are sometimes in the area.

It is a beach of gravel and sand of about 200 meters in length, which also has all the necessary services and you could expect any tourist, such as showers, wastebaskets, toilets, as well as bars and restaurants in its immediate vicinity.

As a curiosity, you should know that you can find a picturesque rock formation in the shape of an arch, located on top of a cliff that can be seen from Bajamar.

Directions to Bajamar

If you do not have a rental car during your visit to Tenerife, you can reach Bajamar by public transport.

From Santa Cruz you can take line 105 and from La Laguna, bus lines 050 and 224.

If you are staying in Puerto de la Cruz, you should take two buses, the first one to go from Puerto de la Cruz to San Cristóbal de La Laguna station. Once you have arrived in the university city, take another bus towards Bajamar.

Hiking in Bajamar

Bajamar also can be an excellent place to start a path through the beautiful mountains that enrich the landscape of northern Tenerife.

From Bajamar you can start multiple paths that pass through the Anaga Massif. Your destination can be Punta del Hidalgo, Pedro Álvarez or the Cruz del Carmen, it all depends on how much you are willing to walk.

Bajamar is a town that seems to have a special attraction for German tourists, but it will also please anyone who wants to know a little better every beautiful corner of Tenerife and loves nature.

It is also within a journey on which you can enjoy in one day some of the most picturesque villages in the north, being able to plan a trip to spend a perfect day and make the most of it, with a hiking trail included and which can finish or start with a swim in the sea.

If you are willing to squeeze the most of your experience in Tenerife, if you love nature and like to get to know its people and its most beautiful villages, then Puerto de la Cruz can be your best option to have on hand all these experiences.

And Bahamar is also an ideal resort for a person who is not very secular and understands the natural beauty of nature.

There is neither deliberate pomposity nor intrusive service here – only the all-consuming magic of the Atlantic, merging with which you turn into Atlanta. Everything else is exactly as much as is needed so that the hopes for the rest come true, and life seems beautiful.

The peaceful atmosphere of a resort atypical for Tenerife is ideal for family holidays and swimming. Tall storm waves can be considered its hallmark. Well, where there are waves, there, of course, is a haven for surfers.

Description

The village of Bahamar is located at an altitude of 50 m above sea level at the western foothills of the Anaga massif in the picturesque surroundings of a tropical park. Historically, it belongs to the Municipal District San Cristóbal de la Laguna . About 2,200 people live permanently in the fishing village. Agriculture is not widely practiced in the region. Local peasants have long migrated to the regional centers. But small fishing artels exist. Basically, the town trades in the resort economy, in which it is very successful.

Bahamar, together with Punta del Hidalgo , Tejina and Valle de Guerra , is part of the resort core La Laguna with brightly colored nature and a provincial measured life pulse. The territory of the town is small, only about 2 sq. km. It is a symbiosis of the urban area and rural coastal areas, partly protected.

The main attraction of Bahamar is luxurious natural pools carved directly into the rock. At high tide, they are filled with crystal clear sea water. You can consider them a curtsy from the violent Atlantic Ocean in these places. I must say that not everyone decides to swim in open water. Another thing is the blue expanse of quiet lagoons, where even small children are comfortable.

Playa San Juan

Playa de San Juan

Encased in concrete, San Juan municipal beach stretches in a narrow (25 m) strip for a distance of 600 m. A typical northern Tenerife native. He can hardly boast of a golden imported sand. The basis of the rocky coastline is the products of volcanic activity: basalt pebbles and black lava dust. Rocks reliably cover the bay from the wind, but do not interfere with high waves.

Natural pools

From the outside, Bahamar beach would hardly be attractive if it were not for the fonts artificially carved into the rocks: one for adults is deep and large, the other for children is small and shallow, creating a natural pool from this. Cool sea water in them constantly circulates, being updated with each fresh surf. You can approach the pools along a concrete fence, the descent is equipped with ladders. On the parapets you can stretch out to sunbathe or just sit down. It’s stormy all around, and you’re watching the rampant elements, kind of like from the sidelines. It must be said that the locals who “ate” the ocean prefer to swim in such places.

Walk about 800 m towards Punta del Hidalgo to reach this pebbly and sandy beach. Behind from the side of the island you will be covered by a rocky coast, and the town of Hidalgo is visible from the right to the east. The beach is wild and not suitable for cultural recreation. But here you can retire surrounded by mountain landscapes and the sound of waves.

What to see

In itself, a cozy, clean town with a Spanish flavor is unremarkable. There is little entertainment here, but seekers find it.

  1. Walking along the embankment is an incomparable pleasure. It seems like you can watch huge waves crashing ashore for an eternity.
  2. Surrounding natural pools and lagoons: Roquete , Troche , Arenal , San Juan . Amazing corners of island tropical and subtropical nature.
  3. Faro de la Punta del Hidalgo is a modern lighthouse in nearby Punta del Hidalgo. Unusual author’s work 1992 years old
  4. Surfing and bodyboarding spots very close: Baja Nueva , Paso , Lobo , Las Bordas .
  5. Anaga Mountains
  6. A picturesque mountain village Chinamada and Taganana lost in the Anaga ranges. Luxurious views.
  7. Jurada cave: on the map. Fancy rock with a hole. Go there, towards the turquoise lagoons. Don’t forget your swimming trunks or swimsuit.
  8. Temples San Juan Bautista and Gran Poder de Dios .
  9. San Juan Hermitage.

Bahamar Holidays:

  1. The annual festival of national folklore, which received international status in 2000. It takes place at the peak of the tourist season on August 7-25.
  2. Basketball tournaments 3×3 featuring world stars such as Sergio Rodriguez . Organized since 1993 by the Bahamar Basketball School Costa Lagunera-CBV .
