90,000 FBI finally admits: Hitler died in Paraguay in 1973.

The Americans organized his escape only to prevent him from falling into the hands of the Russians, reports kratko-news.com.

According to the history books, Adolf Hitler committed suicide in 1945 with his mistress Eva Braun. However, there is information suggesting another theory that Hitler did not die, but escaped and lived in South America. Official figures show the brutal dictator shot himself in the head while his wife took cyanide pills in a bunker in Berlin.

Their bodies were soon set on fire and buried. But what if this information was just a distraction while Hitler fled, just to keep him out of Russian hands? It sounds unbelievable, but historian Abel Basti explains this theory in detail in his new book, entitled Hitler in Exile.

“An agreement was reached with America that Hitler would run away so he wouldn’t fall into the hands of the Russians,” Basti says.

“It makes sense for the scientists, the military and the spies who later participated in the fight against the Russian regime,” he added.

Basti believes that Hitler escaped through a tunnel that led to Tempelhof Airport, where a plane was waiting to take him to Spain. He first arrived in the Canary Islands, then moved to Argentina, where he lived for ten years, after which he settled in Paraguay, where he was under the protection of the dictator Alfred Stroessner.

“Wealthy families who helped him over the years were responsible for organizing his funeral,” Basti explains.

“Hitler is buried in an underground bunker now located in a luxury hotel in Asuncion. The entrance to the bunker was closed in 1973, and about 40 people came to say goodbye to Hitler. One of them was Hitler’s close soldier Fernando Noguera de Araujo, who told reporters about the ceremony,” says Basti.

This is stated in the channel’s documentary “Hitler’s Hunt”, which aired in 2015. Bayer and his team claim to have found evidence of Hitler’s escape using 700 pages of FBI documents. Among these documents is a report that mentions the meeting of a man named Guidano, sent to meet with Hitler and his entourage (50 people in total), as soon as they reached the submarine in Argentina, two and a half weeks after the fall of Berlin.

Guidano was one of four people who met Hitler and his entourage when the U-boats arrived in Argentina.

“Hitler with two women… doctors and other people over 50 went ashore. They arrived at the ranch in the evening to hide. Guidano is ready to reveal the names of the three who helped Hitler and his people. Guidano says he was given $15,000 to help him with all this,” the FBI said on August 14, 1945.

Another message (also dated August 14) mentions the arrival of Nazi U-boats in Argentina. The FBI Headquarters began sending Hitler’s reports to the public and investigators in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act of 26 April 1976 years in an abridged version.

2023 Komoot Women’s GranGuanche Rally

Following the inaugural Komoot Women’s Rally on the GranGuanche route earlier this month, Mia Altieri reports in with her impressions from the week-long ride around Spain’s spectacular Canary Islands with a group of 40 other women. Find her story with a warm and airy gallery of images here…

Words and photos by Mia Altieri (@mia.magnolia)

Komoot Women’s Rallies are week-long bikepacking events that aim to “connect, unite and break down the barriers in adventure cycling by making adventures by bike more accessible to women of all backgrounds.” Entrance is guaranteed for a few attendees, but for most, admission is possible by entering a raffle. Once the application period closes, 50 women are selected for the event. Three rallies are planned for 2023, the first being the GranGuanch Gravel route in the Canary Islands, which took place earlier this month.

The GranGuanche route hops from island to island across the Canaries; each island is connected by a set of ferries. While there are some desolate sections, the islands are well inhabited, meaning there are plenty of stops with food and accommodations. The Komoot Women’s GranGuanche Rally was organized by a team of highly capable women: Gaby Thompson and Lael Wilcox handled logistics, and Mayalen Noriega handled route-specific logistics. Sami Sauri and Rue Kaladyte acted as a media team and captured content throughout the trip, while Martha Perry took the important support role of driving a truck around the island to intervene in emergency situations and help the media crew get around.

The rally took place over seven days between January 14th-20th, 2023. Mileage-wise, it‘s possible to travel the entirety of the GranGuanche gravel route in seven days. But considering the ferry schedules, which run at a limited schedule in the winter, traversing the entire gravel route at a leisurely pace in seven days isn’t possible. Initially, the plan was to bikepack on the islands of La Graciosa, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and finish on El Hierro. However, due to the ferry schedules, this would not quite be workable. To facilitate ferry logistics and timing, the rally was changed to include only Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, and Tenerife, with the 15-kilometer loop on La Graciosa left as an optional shakedown ride the day before the rally.

In the month before the rally, an email was sent out with information regarding the start and end locations. The plan was to meet on the 13th of January in La Orzola and ride the short island loop of La Graciosa and end for a finishers party in Los Cristianos on the southern end of Tenerife on January 20th. Additionally, the organizers hosted a Zoom call where they covered a comprehensive set of topics such as terrain, route, food options, legality of camping, flying with a bike, what bike would be suitable, etc.

The group was particularly interested in topics such as food, whether or not the ride would be a no-drop ride, and the legality of camping. Sami Sauri answered questions about food and showed photos of the cheese board that she likes to bring bikepacking. The organizers clarified that this was not a no-drop ride and that the intention was for us to group up with riders of similar capabilities. As for camping, the organizers made it clear that camping is illegal in most places, but emergency bivvying is acceptable. Finally, the organizers gave all participants three free months of Komoot premium so they could download all of the routes for the trip.

The 50 riders who were selected were of different capabilities, ages, and mindsets. Some riders admitted that this would be their first time bikepacking, others were professional gravel cyclists, but most were hobby bikepackers. In the weeks leading up to the rally, information, tips, and worries were shared in a WhatsApp group with all the participants. There was a communal effort to answer questions, not just from the organizers, but from the participants as well, cultivating a sense of community in the group. It was interesting to see how differently each of us approached the trip. One of the rally riders had planned how many kilometers she would do each day and had already booked accommodations in advance, while another only started packing in the late hours of the night before her early morning flight.

By Friday afternoon on the 13th, most of us made it to La Orzola. In the end, about 40 riders of the 50 riders who’d signed up were present. Unfortunately for one of the rally riders, the airline had lost her bicycle in transit, and she wouldn’t be able to get the bike to her for another two days. Those of us who had our bikes assembled—and weren’t already seasick from the ferry rides—took the short ferry ride to the small island of La Graciosa and did the quick 15-kilometer loop. Many of us met for the first time on the ferry ride to La Graciosa and chatted away excitedly on the rough Atlantic. Once on La Graciosa, we all rode the tiny loop together. The terrain on La Graciosa was spectacular. It had Martian-like landscapes, some brief sandy sections, and spectacular views of neighboring islands.

After returning to Lanzarote that evening, Komoot treated us to tapas and drinks. Those who hadn’t met on La Graciosa met at the dinner, and it was officially the first time the entire group was together. Despite most of the attendees not knowing one another, the group bonded quickly, and there was an incredibly friendly atmosphere full of excitement and anticipation. After the welcome meal, the organizers gave a brief speech and some reminders for the ride. Some goodie bags were given out with stickers, a buff, and a patch, and after we disbanded and made final adjustments to our bikes after dinner.

The next morning, on the first day of the rally, we gathered at the start point, where Rue took each of our photos as we eagerly waited to start the ride. While most bikes were suitable for the gravel and terrain ahead, the bikes took all shapes and forms. Tires sizes ranged from 38 to 3.0”, everything from steel to aluminum to carbon, and a variety of bar types, including drop bars, flat bars, and alt bars.

We finally started at around 9:30 a.m., and we rode as one big group for the first 30 minutes but slowly formed different groups according to our riding styles. As we pedaled across the island, we experienced a variety of terrain, including lava rock, sand, gravel, and pavement. I spent the day bouncing in between groups and enjoying the ocean views, red mountains, rock formations, beautiful coastlines, and the charming town of Teguise. Lanzarote was my favorite island of the trip; I particularly enjoyed biking through the volcanic rock section in Parque Natural de Los Volcanes and my brief swim in the ocean. By the end of the day, most of us were on the ferry to Fuerteventura, where we would start the following day.

After a quick stop for pastries in a cafe in Corralejo the next morning, a majority of us started out on Fuerteventura. The day’s ride kicked off with a beautiful coastline followed by some long road climbs. Most of the group slept at the halfway point on the island, and the next morning, we left to try and catch the afternoon ferry to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. After two days in Fuerteventura, we arrived in Gran Canaria. Gran Canaria was one of the most anticipated islands due to its steep climbs. There were some ominous texts in the group about a steep gravel section that shouldn’t be underestimated.

I started the climb with new friends Katie L’Herpiniere, Liz Seabrook, and Mille Gibbons. It was sunny when we started the climb in the nature reserve Marteles, and we were greeted by a spectacular green gorge with a smooth paved climb. The terrain was absolutely breathtaking and unlike anything we’d seen on the previous islands. A light rain began as we climbed, and the smooth pavement turned into the forewarned steep gravel section. As we got higher, my tiny group splintered off, and I was on my own. The rain became substantial, and the visibility was poor. Cellular service was unreliable, but when it was available, texts would come through from the Komoot group chat with riders reporting how unbelievably cold they were on the descent. One rider didn’t bring a raincoat and fashioned one with a trash bag.

At the top of the mountain, I found myself extremely cold and wet. Before the descent, I changed into my wool clothes and rain gear amid the downpour. At this point, I was still soaking wet, but at least I was a little warmer. When I finally got down the mountain, most everything I owned was soaked, and when I turned my phone on, there was a flurry of messages. Some people needed to get picked up from the top of the mountain and messaged the group for help. One woman attempted to bivy at the top but found herself unable to get warm. Another woman forgot to pay her phone bill and had a hard time routing down to the mountain. Yet another two ended up getting confused and ended up in the town they’d started in that morning. Needless to say, there was some chaos. When the sun rose the next day, there was still a light rain but plenty of rainbows to light the way and spark joy throughout the group.

Once on the ferry to Tenerife, we discussed whether or not to do the gravel route in Tenerife as it would not only be equally as rainy but also snowy. Ultimately, we decided to bike to the final destination of Los Cristianos on a road alternate. While most of us were disappointed that we wouldn’t be able to go to the top of Tenerife and see Teide, we agreed this would be the best decision. Taking the road meant most of the group arrived in Los Cristianos two days earlier than anticipated. The touristy town was quite a shock for us as we had been staying mostly in small towns and city outskirts. But, admittedly, we were all grateful to be in Los Cristianos as the sun was strong, and there was nary a cloud in sight. Despite how excited we were to be in the sun, most of us felt lost and didn’t know what to do with our extra time. The next day, some groups splintered off, some explored islands, some surfed, and some went on a gravel route along the southern coast of Tenerife.

The next day was the final day of the rally, and we celebrated with a finishers’ lunch hosted by Komoot, where we were treated again to tapas and drinks. We exchanged stories as a group, and some people even made plans to ride together in the coming months. At the end of the lunch, Lael flew back to the start of the route to compete in the road race version of the GranGuanche, where she finished the route in just over 40 hours (go Lael!).

Despite not being able to ride to the top of Teide in Tenerife, this ride is one of my most memorable bikepacking experiences. I feel immensely grateful to have attended this rally. I typically bikepack solo or with one other person, as when I ride with another person, there’s usually a compromise in riding style and paces. But, biking with such a large group in a non-race environment meant I could ride at my own pace and that there was always someone nearby to ride with.

Before this, I had never biked with only women, and it felt incredibly empowering to be surrounded by so many inspiring women. The sense of community in the group was heartwarming, and it was great to see women supporting each other and lifting each other up. Thanks to this trip, I now have an extensive community of female bikepacking friends, and my bikepacking community strengthened tenfold. I can’t recommend these rallies enough. If you identify as a woman and would like to participate in one of Komoot’s Women’s Rallies, they will host two more this year: one in September in Slovenia and another in November in Tucson, Arizona.

Top 6 Places to Visit in February in China

February is the last month of winter in most of China. It’s the right time to appreciate rape flowers and plum blossoms in warm places. Meanwhile, Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, is more likely to fall in February, when China will be filled with happiness and huge celebrations.

1. Beijing — the Great Wall in Snow, and Skiing

February is a quiet time for traveling to Beijing (apart from during the Spring Festival rush). You can enjoy a less-crowded trip, especially at the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace, which are full of crowds in peak season.

If you are interested in skiing, Beijing is an ideal place. There are several ski resorts around Beijing: such as Chongli Thaiwoo Ski Resort and Nanshan Ski Resort.

If you are traveling during Spring Festival, we recommend Beijing’s temple fairs, a traditional experience held at ancient temples for hundreds of years. The most famous temple fairs in Beijing are Changdian Temple Fair, Dongyue Temple Fair, and Baiyun Temple Fair. Read top 10 Beijing temple fairs.

Recommended Beijing Tours:

2. Harbin — Colorful Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival

Harbin is the northernmost city of China, near Russia. You can see many Russian-style buildings there, such as St Sofia Orthodox Church. It is always an ideal place to visit in China’s wintertime.

The Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival last till late February. You can see many (life-size) famous buildings etc. sculpted in ice or snow.

Harbin is also a good place for skiing. If you are interested in skiing, please refer to Yabuli Skiing Center, Erlongshan Skiing Resort, and Jihua Skiing Resort.

Recommended Harbin Tours:

3. Changbai Mountain — Splendid Wintry Scenery

Changbai Mountain is one of the top scenic mountains in China. It has splendid scenery in all four seasons, but it is especially beautiful in winter and an extraordinary winter resort for all kinds of visitors.

Heavenly Lake is like a sapphire set in the snowy mountains. Gorgeous rime hangs on the branches. Mt. Changbai’s hot spring river is covered by mist.

Changbai Mountain offers various snow activities like skiing, winter rafting, sledding, and snowmobiling. There are also many luxury hot spring resorts.

Recommended Changbai Mountain Tours:

4. Yunnan — Rice Terraces, Flowers, Hot Springs

February is a good time to visit Yuanyang’s Rice Terraces (in Kunming prefecture, southwest China). It is one of China’s five most beautiful rice terraces.

It looks like a huge palette, with red earth and water in the fields reflecting the blue sky and golden sunshine. Around mid-February, the blooming wildflowers make it more charming.

It’s also an ideal month to see rape flowers in Luoping. The yellow rape flowers, covering an area of more than 100 square kilometers (39 sq mi), are in full bloom between February and March.

The warm sub-tropical sunshine, clear dry-season skies, and moderate climate will let you enjoy abundant outdoor activities. Explore tropical landscapes in Xishuangbanna, hike on the original Tea Horse Road in Lijiang, and relax in a volcanic hot spring in Tengchong.

Recommended Yunnan Tours:

5. Sanya — Warmest Place in China

If you want a trip away from the coldness of China’s winter, Hainan Island is ideal. It’s the warmest place in China during February.

You can have fun in the sea and on the beaches in Sanya, known as “Oriental Hawaii”. Experience spreading the sails, diving in the blue ocean, flying through a tropical forest by zipline, hiking in ‘Sky’s Edge Sea’s Corner’ Scenic Zone, and shopping for duty-free commodities.

Recommended Sanya Tours:

6.

The Yellow Mountains — Magnificent Snow Scenery

If you are looking for enchanting mountain snow scenery, the Yellow Mountains is an ideal destination.

Different from many famous pictures, the Yellow Mountains in February have breathtaking views of a pure white world. The famous scene “the seas of cloud” is more likely to be seen in winter.

And the sunrises and sunsets on the mountains are very splendid. You can enjoy the scenery by yourself most of the time, unlike in the overcrowded summer.

Africa in February sees summer in full swing. Rain has settled in across most of the continent, nourishing its vast savannahs and irrigating the tropical coastline through afternoon showers. But it’s not all grey clouds: choose the right destination and you’ll find yourself under Africa’s classic blue skies and gorgeous sunshine.

It’s a great time for both safaris and beach holidays if you know where to go in February, and you’ll be perfectly in time for some of the year’s biggest wildlife experiences. If you’ve ever wanted to snorkel with a 12-metre (40-foot) whale shark or encounter a rare mountain gorilla in its natural habitat, this is the time to do it. It’s time for cool wine cellars on sprawling estates in the Cape Town’s magnificent winelands and palm-thatched bandas on endless tropical beaches.

Want to see blue skies overhead? Book a vacation in Africa in February. It might not be peak season in the most popular places, but it’s the perfect season for a little R&R under the African sun in these destinations:

Kenya

1.

Kenya

Saruni Samburu

Samburu & Masai Mara

Nudging northern Kenya’s savannah plains, the Samburu National Reserve is a very different destination to its more famous southern cousins, Amboseli and the Masai Mara. Samburu’s palm groves and thorny scrub are in complete semi-desert contrast to the Mara’s rolling grasslands, but the wildlife is equally as superb. You’ll find all the regulars here – elephant, lion and leopard – along with some species unique to the region such as the Samburu Special 5: Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk antelope, reticulated giraffe, Besia oryx and Somali ostrich.

Remember, it’s hot in February, so lodges with pools are ideal, but this is a nice dry window of opportunity between Kenya’s rainy seasons. Game viewing by 4X4 is the main activity here alongside cultural encounters at the local villages, fascinating guided nature walks and even camelback safaris.

Samburu and the Masai Mara is where to go in February and one of the best ways of experiencing Kenya in our opinion. You get to enjoy the diversity and unique landscapes of the Samburu with the iconic savannah and wildlife of the Mara.

South Africa

2. South Africa

Aerial view of Cape Town.

Cape Town

February is the connoisseur’s choice for summer in Cape Town. Free from the festive-season crowds, it’s as sunny as Africa should be and as dry as an oak-matured chardonnay. From the spectacular white-sand beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton to the shopping hub of the V&A Waterfront, there is plenty to do and see. But our advice is to skip the sun-baked City Bowl and head south for the cooler, shadier slopes of Table Mountain, where plump rows of green vines mark the start of the Constantia Wine Route.

One of Cape Town’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, Constantia is home to South Africa’s oldest wine estates and the February heat makes those chilled wines and under-the-oak-tree picnics sublime. There’s also excellent hiking in nearby Silvermine Nature Reserve, as well as organic food markets to browse and local beaches to visit. Finish off a lazy summer day with a music concert in the natural beauty of Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden – the perfect way to experience South Africa in February.

Tanzania

3. Tanzania

Mafia Island, Zanzibar

Serengeti National Park

After Tanzania’s short rains season, the southern Serengeti offers good grazing for the Wildebeest Migration’s herds. It’s calving season until about March – prepare yourself for plenty of wobbly babies and potential heartbreak as predators swoop in on easy prey. If you’re looking for dramatic predator action, East Africa in February will deliver lions, brown hyenas, leopards and even wild dogs taking advantage of vulnerable calves. If that’s not enough action, February also kicks off the Migration’s rutting season when males joust for the right to mate with receptive females.

Zanzibar

Longer than a London bus and weighing twice as much, the whale shark is the ocean’s biggest fish by a country mile. But its great size belies a curious fact: slow-moving, filter-feeding whale sharks are about as dangerous as a dozing cow. Snorkellers have even grasped a table-sized fin to catch a ride! Young whale sharks are known to be playful with human divers.

A migratory species, these beautiful giants grace the East African coast between October and April in numbers unheard of just a decade ago, and February is the best month to see them. Head for the south coast of Kenya or Zanzibar’s gorgeous islands where your visit will happily coincide with the archipelago’s best weather. Chumbe Island is great for general snorkelling, while Mnemba Island has its own marine reserve, and Pemba and Mafia islands are legendary whale shark snorkelling spots. If you’ve always dreamed of swimming with our planet’s biggest fish, then head to East Africa in February.

Uganda, Rwanda & Congo

4. Uganda, Rwanda & Congo

Mboko Camp, Congo

Elephants, chimpanzees and forest buffalo are big attractions, but the stars of the show are endangered gorillas. Congo, Uganda or Rwanda are where to go in February to see these great apes in their natural habitat. Although gorilla trekking is considered a year-round activity, February is one of the best times for these expeditions: it’s dry, hiking conditions are good and the month has the lowest malaria risk. For most of the year, gorillas eat a diet of plain, starchy vegetation, but come February, they can be found beneath the trees heavy with fruit.

Seychelles & Mozambique

5.

Seychelles & Mozambique

Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique

If you’re planning an Indian Ocean holiday in February, you’d better pack an umbrella: it’s cyclone season. So why are we recommending Mozambique and the Seychelles? Because they are located outside the cyclone zone and, although there are occasional afternoon showers, both destinations offer classic sun-drenched, palm-fringed beaches at the time of year when the northern hemisphere is under snow and ice.

The small, exclusive Quirimbas Archipelago lies off northern Mozambique and is ideal for honeymooners and adventure-seeking families. The Seychelles experience ranges from family resorts to private islands with everything in between. Both destinations offer an unbeatable blend of water sports action and indulgent pampering and, thanks to easy logistics, both make a fantastic add-on to your safari in Africa in February.

Winter in Sochi is mild, there are practically no frosts, the snow that has fallen quickly melts. If you do not take into account the cool weather, a holiday in Sochi in February has many advantages. At this time, the main resorts of the country rest from tourists, which means that all the sights can be visited without queues. The cost of flights and accommodation in the low season is traditionally lower, so there is every chance to save a lot. In addition, a holiday in Sochi in winter is indicated for those who are dangerous to stay in the open sun for a long time in conditions of sweltering heat. nine0003

Finally, in February in Sochi there is an opportunity to get from summer to winter in just a couple of hours by visiting the Krasnaya Polyana resort. At the end of winter, more than ever, you want to escape from the noisy city to nature, breathe fresh air, get a boost of energy, enjoy the sea sunset. To reboot and relax, you should go to the Crimea. Even in the cold season, the air temperature in Crimea rarely drops below zero. nine0003

Winter is a wonderful opportunity to get to know the capital of Crimea, which you forget about in a hurry in the summer, trying to get to the sea as soon as possible. Simferopol has something to surprise guests with: amazing architecture, theatres, temples, museums, extensive parks and gardens. From Simferopol by public transport you can get to the capital of the Scythian kingdom, see the ruins of defensive structures, the buildings of the Southern Palace, the mausoleums of Skilur and Argot. An excellent panorama of Simferopol opens from above. nine0003

By car, you can explore the most hidden corners of the peninsula. Such as the lighthouse at Cape Tarkhankut. In February, it is bewitchingly quiet and beautiful here. From above, a view opens up for many nautical miles. As in the warm season, the Yalta Reserve is available for visiting in winter, where more than 30 eco-trails of varying complexity are laid. St.

Petersburg

February for St. Petersburg is the low season. The New Year holidays are over, and the white nights are still far away. Therefore, it is at this time that you can expect lower prices for flights and accommodation. The air temperature is in the range of -3..-5 degrees, sometimes rolling into the plus. However, due to the high humidity it feels much cooler. It is better to plan your program in St. Petersburg so that you spend as little time outdoors as possible, and the famous suburbs (Tsarskoye Selo, Pavlovsk, Gatchina, Oranienbaum) are worth visiting with an organized group. nine0003

This is not the most touristy month for the city on the Neva. All interesting activities are moving to museums, theaters, art spaces, warm and atmospheric cafes. The unpredictable February weather inspired many poets to work, to recall at least the famous lines of Pasternak: “February. Get ink and cry …” works. nine0003

In February, many people have a desire to escape from the endless series of cases and go away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Karelia is a great destination for a vacation away from civilization. Most winter entertainment in Karelia is associated with outdoor activities: sledding and snowmobiling, horseback riding, skiing, fishing. In winter, as well as in summer, excursions to the museum-reserves of Kizhi and Valaam, to the marble canyon “Ruskeala” are popular. The Kivach waterfall does not freeze even in Epiphany frosts. nine0003

From the platform of the city of Sortavala, you can make an exciting journey to the Ruskeala Mountain Park on a colorful retro train. The route passes through the snow-covered Karelian expanses, including the picturesque century-old arched bridge. The marble quarry of Ruskeala in winter acquires a special charm, from about 5 pm evening lights begin to work, which add magic and fairy tales to the appearance of the marble rocks.

The fate of Yekaterinburg is intertwined with the events that have taken place in the country throughout its history. Therefore, it is difficult to pass by the Church on the Blood, which is associated with the tragic biography of Nicholas II and his family. On the opposite bank of the city pond, the Yeltsin Center was recently built, dedicated to the first president of Russia, a native of the Sverdlovsk region. nine0003

What to do on Lake Baikal in winter

What to do if the sarma, the most powerful and frightening Baikal wind, knocks you off your feet? Why lie on ice on your stomach? And also: skating expeditions, freeride, curling, hot springs, amphibious boat and dog sledding: we found a couple of dozen reasons why to go to Baikal in winter. Go! nine0349

Winter on Baikal is real: long, cold, snowy and quite sunny. You will find here all the usual winter activities – from skating or skiing to ice fishing, hot springs and a real Siberian bath. Yes, it’s snowy and cold here. But along with the temperature, prices also drop. The main thing is to dress well and stock up on healthy curiosity. You have never had such a vacation!

Baikal ice

The first cold comes to the Irkutsk region and neighboring Buryatia in early October. But the most frosty days usually fall on December, and it is then that the ice binds the lake and gains density and thickness; it will begin to melt only in mid-April. Snow lies on the shores of Lake Baikal from November to May, and the depth of the cover reaches two meters. But if you don’t surprise visiting tourists with snowdrifts, then Baikal ice is something completely special. nine0003

Photo: Katvic / Shutterstock

The water in Baikal is so clean and clear that the stones at the bottom can be seen at a depth of up to 40 meters. Freezing, it turns into the same transparent ice.

Amazing photos

Where else have you seen people take so many pictures of the ice of a frozen lake? A rich palette of blues and all its shades, from baby blue to jet black, with stunning patterns of layers, cracks and bubbles. The favorite entertainment of tourists is to lie on their stomachs and peer into the depths of the Baikal waters. And take pictures, pictures, pictures. Huge Baikal hummocks and icy rocks only add variety to the graphic plots of the photographs. nine0003

Photo: Serg Zastavkin / Shutterstock

Natural ice rink

Not only natural beauty attracts tourists to Lake Baikal. This lake is also the largest and most picturesque skating rink in the world. Due to the crystal clear water and the strongest winds, the surface of the Baikal ice is surprisingly smooth and slippery. The most desperate thrill-seekers go on real skating expeditions. Tourists do not have to go for such feats: any decent camp site standing on the shore clears a nearby area of ice for skating and rents out skates. In Listvyanka, on the Small Sea and on the southern coast, where the hotels stand close to each other, the skating rinks stretch along the coast for several kilometers. They also play curling or golf on the ice of Lake Baikal and hold a festival of ice sculptures. nine0003

Ice roads

Ice on Baikal has an important practical application – not only for tourists, but also for local residents. It is so dense and strong that often people simply drive along it to the most beautiful shores in cars, snowmobiles or amphibious boats. In summer, the number of car routes is very limited: there are few roads around the lake, driving along them is a dubious pleasure, and you have to walk or fly by helicopter to the most dizzying and untouched places. And in winter, I got into the car and drove straight. nine0003

Photo: Viktorya Telminova / Shutterstock

True, winter roads – roads on ice monitored by the traffic police and the Ministry of Emergency Situations – are laid only along the most popular routes. Otherwise, riding on a frozen surface is at your own peril, risk and luck. Usually the strongest ice is from mid-February to early April. And the main advice completely contradicts traffic rules: when driving on ice, in no case should you buckle up, it is better to steer only with your right hand, and with your left at any moment you need to be ready to open the door handle in order to jump out of the car if it suddenly starts to go under water. And these are not just horror stories: there are several dozen such cases on Baikal every year. nine0003

Ice fishing

Fishermen take to the ice in January when Baikal bays freeze. And since February, when the thickness of the ice reaches one and a half meters, they fish literally everywhere they can get. The most fishy and convenient place is the Small Sea, between the coast of the Irkutsk region and Olkhon Island. Perch, burbot, grayling and the most famous Baikal fish, omul, are taken out of the holes.

Photo: ivandan / Shutterstock

Ice diving

Any diving under water is an excursion to another world. But when a one and a half meter layer of the most beautiful ice is above you, the sensations and emotions are unearthly. This entertainment is available only to very experienced divers who are ready for risky and unusual situations. To dive, you need a “dry” wetsuit, which can be rented at a local diving center – for example, in Listvyanka.

For information on what to do on Lake Baikal in winter, see the Follow Me program on the Let’s Go! TV channel. nine0349

Winds of Baikal

The heaviest and most dangerous thing on Baikal is winds. There are many of them, they are different, and only local residents can accurately tell whether the beginning breeze will remain just a small breath or turn into a real snow storm. The wind along Baikal usually blows calmly. But the transverse ones are very dangerous!

Photo: Anastasia Sladkova / Shutterstock

The most insidious is the Sarma wind. Sensing his approach, the locals immediately go to the shelter. A powerful stream of air is capable of dragging a person across perfectly smooth ice at incredible speed. Forwarders take ice axes and crampons in case of strong winds, but if a sarma arrives, they will not help either. So do not leave or go far from the coast so that you can return as soon as you or your guide sense the approach of bad weather. nine0003

Ski holidays on Baikal

Baikal is surrounded by high mountains from almost all sides, the peaks of which are covered with snow even in summer. There are also ski centers on the slopes of the Sayans. The most popular resort is located on Mount Sobolinaya, on the southeastern shore of the lake. Here, eight lifts serve 12 ski slopes with a total length of 17 kilometers. The highest point is at 1004 meters. The elevation difference is about 500 meters. Of course, there are more interesting ski resorts in Russia and neighboring countries, but the landscapes of Lake Baikal and the Khamar-Daban mountain range cannot be confused with anything. nine0003

Mount Mamai, located nearby, is a cult place for freeriders. Snow falls here already in November, and at the height of winter its depth reaches six meters, so skiing is quite safe – it is almost impossible to run into stones under the snow. But you need to be able to hold on to deep powder and have the equipment necessary for such skiing: if you fall into the snow, it will not seem enough. The longest descent along the Mamaia virgin lands stretches for about three kilometers.

Horse and dog sledding

You don’t have to climb mountains to ride with the breeze on Lake Baikal.

There is also a horse farm and a sled dog kennel in Listvyanka. On horseback or in a sled with dogs, you can ride through the Siberian taiga.

Snowmobile or amphibious rides

Want to get even faster? It’s worth a ride on a snowmobile to see a kaleidoscope of winter landscapes in a short trip – from snow-covered taiga to breathtaking views over the expanses of Lake Baikal. nine0003

Photo: Katvic / Shutterstock

And if a trip on a frozen lake beckons you, then instead of a heavy car, it is better to choose the maneuverable Khivus – a small hovercraft. On it you can drive up to the most picturesque natural monuments on the shores and islands of Lake Baikal.

Hot springs of Baikal

Winter Baikal is not only majestic ice and powerful air currents surrounded by beautiful Sayan Mountains. There is also something much more pleasant. Hot Springs. All of them are concentrated on the Buryat coast. The most ennobled and, accordingly, the most expensive hot springs to visit are located on Cape Kotelnikovsky. You can get here at any time of the year only by the lake – in summer by boat, in winter – by car, Khivus or snowmobile. nine0003

Photo: Pomorzev / Shutterstock

Hot springs are free to visit in Zmenina Bay in the Zabaikalsky National Park, there are wooden changing rooms and fonts, and there are almost no people. The easiest way to get to Dzelinda and Goudzhekit springs is, for example, by train from Severobaikalsk. And there is even a free transfer to the Khakusy thermal resort.

Siberian bath

If a trip across the ice of Lake Baikal to hot springs seems like an extreme adventure for you, but you really want to get warm and mellow, look for a good bath. They are available in many recreation centers and private guest houses. Siberians will steam you for real! And then they will be treated to cold beer with whitefish or omul, tea from Siberian herbs or a hearty dinner. nine0003

Siberian and Buryat cuisine

When you visit Baikal, be sure to try the local fish — hot smoked omul, dried whitefish and grayling. Frozen fish is used to prepare splitting – a Siberian version of stroganina. From fresh – saguday. And also very satisfying and tasty poses or buuzas, very similar to manti: with meat filling and broth. The national Buryat soup bukhler is made from lamb. On the Irkutsk coast, at the end of the meal, you will be offered tea with herbs, and on the Buryat coast – with milk. And you should definitely try it yourself and bring real pine nuts as souvenirs to your friends – you will find them so fresh and tasty only in Siberia. nine0003

Olkhon Island and the Small Sea. The strait between the mainland of the Irkutsk region and the island of Olkhon stretched along the coast is called the Small Sea. And he, in turn, is a concentration of natural monuments, places of power and amazing legends. In winter, a dense and snow-white road to the Small Sea is much more pleasant than a dusty summer dirt road. And to get to the island, you do not need to wait for the ferry: a winter road is laid across the strait. The journey from Irkutsk takes about four hours. On the way you will see the snow-covered Tazheran steppes, and on the Small Sea – the most transparent, colorful and patterned ice of Lake Baikal. The sarma wind blowing regularly here blows snow off the ice, so here it is usually crystal clear and smooth. Once on Olkhon, do not forget to visit Shamanka rock and Cape Khoboy. nine0003

Circum-Baikal Railway. This monument of engineering is impressive at any time of the year: dozens of tunnels cut into the rocks and stone bridges over bays and rivers. Once the road was of great practical importance, but now it is a tourist attraction that everyone should ride. And be sure to take the time to Slyudyanka, a small town on the Circum-Baikal Railway, which houses a unique private museum of colored stones and minerals. nine0003

Shaman sites, rocks and caves. They are literally on any part of the coast of Baikal or its islands. Ask any local resident and he will dip you into the world of spirits, ancestors and mystical stories.

Buddhist datsans. The Buryats occupy a rather prominent role in the world life of the Buddhist community and are proud of their great lamas. There is also a real sacred stupa in the Irkutsk region – on the small and uninhabited island of Ogoy, not far from Olkhon.

Taltsy Open Air Ethnographic Museum. Here, in the suburbs of Irkutsk, there are about a hundred historical buildings typical of Western Siberia – from wooden churches and houses to defensive structures and national dwellings of northern peoples. You can trace the history and culture of the peoples living here – Russians, Buryats and Evenks, starting from the 10th century. Here, not only a Siberian settlement is recreated, and inside the buildings – the life of different classes, but also the work of potters, blacksmiths, architects and other artisans. nine0003

Settlements on Lake Baikal. The easiest way to get to Listvyanka – buses and minibuses go here from Irkutsk, and there are many hotels, recreation centers and other tourist infrastructure here. There is also an interesting Baikal Museum. It is very picturesque in the area of Staraya Angasolka, to which a four-kilometer hiking trail leads from the Tyomnaya Pad station; You can also walk along the sleepers of the Circum-Baikal Railway from the village of Kultuk. In addition to being simply beautiful here, there is also the house-museum of Nicholas Roerich. And it’s worth a trip to Bolshoye Goloustnoye to get from there by winter road to Peschanaya Bay — unique in its beauty at any time of the year.

This chart shows the 14 day weather trend for Canary Islands (Canary Islands, Spain) with daily weather symbols, minimum and maximum temperatures, precipitation amount and probability.

    • The deviance is coloured within the temperature graph. The stronger the ups and downs, the more uncertain the forecast will be. The thick line represents the most probable trend.
    • Variation in precipitation is represented as a „T“. These uncertainties usually increase with the number of forecasts days ahead.
    • The forecast is created with „ensemble“ models. Several model runs with varying start parameter are calculated to estimate the predictability of the forecast more precisely.

Matriculating from the Canary Islands, Diaz Graham twins make Pitt their 2nd home

He attacks from behind, always with a weapon in his hands. Every day. And gets away with it.

“When he has that blocking pad in his hand, you better be ready for anything,” Pitt freshman Guillermo Diaz Graham said of associate head coach Tim O’Toole.

It’s all part of how O’Toole gets his big men ready for the rigors of the ACC. The soft blocking pad is meant to simulate the bumping and shoving associated with action in the paint.

“I’m not used to all the bumps (in games),” said Diaz Graham, a 7-foot freshman from the Canary Islands. “I’m working out with T.O., bumping everywhere, getting ready for the contact (to) just get tougher and get stronger.”

This is a season of transition for Diaz Graham and his 6-foot-11 twin brother, Jorge. Guillermo, who speaks Spanish, French and English, plays in the post, while Jorge is a wing player.

Coach Jeff Capel is thoughtful in his usage of the twins. Guillermo scored seven points in 30 minutes against VCU in November, six in 20 last Wednesday at Louisville. Then, he played in the seven-point loss to Florida State on Saturday for less than six minutes, only long enough to grab one rebound.

Jorge never got off the bench against the Seminoles, but he is averaging more minutes (11.3/8.6) and points (3.4/2.0) than his brother. Their rebound totals are similar (45 for Guillermo, 44 for Jorge).

Yet, with 6-foot-9 center John Hugley lost for the season, Pitt might need the twins’ length Wednesday against Wake Forest and in the crucial second half of the ACC season.

Florida State used four players 6-10 or taller. When Pitt (13-7, 6-3) meets Wake Forest (14-6, 6-3), the twins and starting 6-11 center Federiko Federiko must contend with 7-1, 250-pound Matthew Marsh and 6-10, 220 Andrew Carr. Guillermo’s listed weight is 205 pounds, Jorge 190.

In practice, Federiko gives Guillermo a workout under the basket.

“He’s hard to guard. I have to box him out,” Guillermo said. “I have to push him around. He’s pushing me back and I’m getting used to being pushed. I think it’s great for both. It’s more than we expected.

“Every one of the guys on the floor are pushing you. Be ready for 40 minutes of being pushed around.”

Jorge is only 1 inch shorter and 15 pounds lighter than his brother, but they play two distinctly different positions.

“I’ve always been taller and stronger than him, and he’s always been quicker than me, better footwork, more like a wing player,” Guillermo said. “Growing up, I just decided to stay in my floor position and post up and get open. It’s just how we grew up.”

In the Canary Islands, a Spanish community 62 miles off the coast of Morocco, the twins played basketball and soccer. No surprise, Guillermo was a goalkeeper.

In July, Guillermo helped the Spanish national team win the Under 20 European Championship, averaging 6.3 points and 1.7 blocks per game. Jorge was invited to train with the team.

Both attended IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where Jorge averaged 15.5 points, shot 44% beyond the 3-point arc and had seven 3s in one game. Guillermo averaged 12.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

That’s where they met O’Toole, a coach from a city called Pittsburgh that was largely unfamiliar to them.

Eventually, O’Toole met with the twins and their parents, Francisco Diaz and Elizabeth Graham.

“He told us about Pittsburgh,” Guillermo said, “how me and my brother could play together at Pitt. We made a visit here. We fell in love with Pittsburgh.”

He said they chose Pitt over Utah State, San Francisco and UMass because of “the people.”

“I have a family back home, far away,” Guillermo said. “(Pitt coaches) told me they would take care of me. It’s a big family here. That’s the No. 1 thing.”

Plus, there was the competition and the chance to grow.

“The ACC is big-time. We wanted a big challenge,” he said.

The twins weren’t obsessed with going to the same school, but Guillermo said Pitt made it seem right.

“At the last moment,” he said, “we felt like, ‘OK, we have to (stay) together because this thing is really good.’ ”

Guillermo, 19, said Pitt’s older players have helped their transition.

“I remember early in the season when I was not getting many minutes, all the guys came to me and said, ‘Be ready,’ ” he said.

Then, during the World Cup, the twins and their teammates formed another bond.

“Me, Fede, Jorge and Nate (Santos),” Guillermo said, “we were going to watch it by ourselves. Then, they put the games (on the TV) in the locker room. I got Greg (Elliott), I got Nelly (Cummings) watching and asking me (about the game).

“I’m going crazy in the locker room. These guys really care about me because they don’t care about soccer, but they get excited about a game they don’t know (about), just because they see me excited.

“Instead of watching it alone, I got the whole team doing it. You don’t feel like you’re that far away from home.”

The twins’ parents visited over the holidays, with Elizabeth making sure their refrigerator was well-stocked and fixing their favorite meal (steak, cooked with onions and dates).

“I had Fede and Nate try it. Two minutes, it was gone.”

Their parents watch Pitt games at 2 a.m. in the Canary Islands, but they were in town for the North Carolina and Virginia victories.

Guillermo told them, “We won both games. You have to move here.”

How we spent the winter in Spain and how much money we spent

We (Dasha – yoga instructor and Max – programmer) spend the winter months traveling for the third year in a row. During this time we have visited Latin America and Southeast Asia. This year we decided to go to Europe to get acquainted with the Canary Islands, mainland Spain and Portugal.

    How to get there

Since we are from Minsk, it is the cheapest way for us to fly to mainland Spain and the Canary Islands from Warsaw on the low-cost airline Ryanair. If you take tickets in advance and not at the height of the season, then it turns out quite budget. Tickets Warsaw – Tenerife cost us 60 euros per person. The flight time was just over 5 hours. nine0003

From Russia, it is usually more profitable to fly to Barcelona first, and from there either travel around mainland Spain or fly further to the islands.

    To Barcelona!

    Winter weather

The Canary Islands have good weather all year round. In winter, the temperature does not fall below +18C both on land and in the ocean.

On the mainland, for example, in Valencia, in the winter months (January and February), at night the thermometer mark can show zero, and during the day from +15 to +20C. It becomes cold even in apartments, only a heater helps out. Perhaps that is why in winter the Spaniards themselves try to spend more time on the street. They bask in the sun and save on electricity. nine0003

On the way to the Teide volcano (Tenerife island)

    Rental prices

We always use Airbnb to find accommodation when we travel. If you book in advance, at least a couple of months in advance, you can save a lot, and there will be more choice.

In the Canary Islands, we lived in apartments for 25 euros per night, with a separate bedroom and a combined kitchen-living room. On the mainland, this time (from December to March) is considered the low season, and we were lucky to rent a studio right on the seashore for 30 euros per day. And in Portugal, for the same money, we spent several weeks on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in an old house. nine0003

    South coast of Portugal

    Rent a car

On this trip we rented a class A car for only 11 euros per day. You should carefully read reviews about rental companies. Unobvious payments and problems with deposit refunds can be hidden behind the low cost of renting a car.

Traveling by car in Spain and Portugal is a real pleasure: high-speed highways away from cities, specially equipped places for recreation and non-stop change of scenery from orange and olive groves. Sometimes you have to pay for such pleasure. Toll roads are found in both Spain and Portugal. The cost depends on the mileage. nine0003

    Food

    In restaurants

Spain’s gastronomic wealth consists of seafood and fish, paella (a dish of rice with saffron, seafood or meat, and vegetables cooked in a special pan), small tapas and several varieties of cold tomato soup gazpacho. The regions of Spain differ from each other not only in history, but also in cuisine. In each city you can try a special dish that is found only in this area. nine0003

The average price for a hot dish in establishments is 8-10 euros, paella for two is about 25 euros. In the Spanish city of Granada, tapas are brought free of charge when ordering a drink. In the Canaries, in cafes and restaurants, olives, bread and local sauces are brought free of charge as an aperitif. For the same set in Portugal, they offer to pay about 5-7 euros.

Portuguese cuisine cannot be imagined without cod – dried cod, salted cod, baked and fried cod. There is even a joke: “If you live with a Portuguese, then 365 days a year he will cook cod according to different recipes and will never repeat it.” For dishes in establishments in Portugal, you will have to pay a little more – about 12-18 euros per serving. nine0003

    In stores

In Spanish supermarkets and fruiteries (small shops selling vegetables and fruits) we have always been pleased with a large selection of inexpensive and high-quality vegetables and fruits. Oranges were especially sweet and juicy. The cost of an orange per kg is less than a euro; bananas, pineapples, apples and pears – about 1.5 euros. Mango and papaya cost us more – more than 2 euros per kg. Fresh seafood was the cheapest in the Canary Islands – about 8 euros per kg, on the mainland – 10 euros, squid – 4 euros, mussels – 2 euros. In Portugal, prices for all the same products were slightly higher. nine0003

We cooked more at home, and went to cafes mostly only on weekends.

    Internet

In the Canary Islands and the mainland, we paid 19 euros for mobile internet for 10 GB. The concept of unlimited mobile Internet, in principle, does not exist. In Portugal, you will have to pay 30 euros for the same tariff plan. We liked the quality of the Internet in Portugal more than in Spain.

    Conclusion

We liked wintering in Europe! We got everything we were looking for – the sea, the sun, fruits and fantastically beautiful places. Of course, there is no Asian heat, simplicity and ridiculous housing prices.

    Things to do in Arrecife

What are the best things to do in Arrecife?

Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, and as you might expect the least focused on tourism, but that doesn’t mean that it’s difficult to find things to do. Quite the opposite in fact! Arrecife is home to the major port of Lanzarote and welcomes many cruise ships to the island. The majority of cruise guests book up on tours and excursions around the island, and there are certainly plenty to choose from.

Attractions to visit in Arrecife Lanzarote

Lanzarote has an interesting history. Not only due to the fact that the island was formed during a period of immense volcanic activity but also through one of their own, César Manrique. Many of the attractions around the island that we see today were inspired and created by the late artist himself. To this day the influence of Manrique is present in every corner of the island. The excursions to these attractions are all bookable online with pickup and drop-off in Arrecife.

    Los Jameos Del Agua

A concept and development by César Manrique, Los Jameos del Agua is a collection of smaller attractions that fuse man with nature. The lava tunnel is home to thousands of tiny albino crabs, whilst a cave-based auditorium delights guests with outstanding acoustics and musical performances.

Timanfaya National park. One of the must things to do in Lanzarote

Quite possibly the jewel in the crown of things to do in Lanzarote, The Timanfaya National Park is a stark reminder of the devastation and destruction that helped form the island into what it is today.

Mirador del Rio. The must-see lookout is built into the cliffs of Famara.

If you’ve got a head for heights, then El Mirador del Rio is a must-see. This Manrique-inspired lookout is built 400m high into the cliff side of El Risco de Famara and overlooks the neighbouring island of La Graciosa. Inside there is a small cafe/snack bar and gift shop. Things to do on the water in Arrecife Whilst there are no Catamaran excursions that depart Arrecife itself, it is possible to get a pick-up/drop-off service to Puerto Calero included in the price of an excursion. The best Catamaran Experience in Lanzarote The CatLanza excursions offer some of the most amazing experiences you will find in Lanzarote. Catlanza operates three different Catamarans that are available for special events, private hire, or as an excursion giving you a memorable afternoon out at sea and on anchor at the stunning Papagayo beaches.

Still, looking for things to do in Arrecife?

    Support the Lanzarote football team

If you like football, UD Lanzarote plays their home games in Arrecife and you can usually catch their home games on a Sunday lunchtime during the football season. The crowd is a great mix of locals, holiday makers and people from around the world who have made Lanzarote their home.

Tea and Cake on the 17th Floor

You might have noticed that most buildings in Lanzarote are only a few stories high. This was a law that was put in place to protect the skyline and buildings have to be painted white. There is one exception to the rule though, and it was strongly contested. That’s the Gran Hotel in Arrecife. This building is the only high rise in Lanzarote. The 17th floor of the hotel has a restaurant and a cafe, from which you sit and look down on life happening in the city. It’s definitely on our list of things to do in Arrecife.

Visit the Aquarium at Costa Teguise

Costa Teguise is a town and holiday resort just up the coast from Arrecife. One of the main attractions here is the largest aquarium in the Canary Islands. The Aquarium offers a great day out for all the family and is easily accessible via a short bus trip from Arrecife.

    Shopping in Arrecife

For Lanzarote, Arrecife is a large city and has many different areas dedicated to shopping. You can find many high street brands in the main city center and marina, whilst out of town, there are larger commercial areas that are great for furniture, home improvement, and electrical items. Truth be told, if you can’t find what you need in Arrecife, you might need to turn to the internet! One tip for shopping in Arrecife – avoid Saturday afternoons and Sundays. It’s a ghost town as the locals shut up shop for their weekend siesta and day of rest. Whilst Arrecife isn’t particularly a popular tourist resort, it is home to a number of hotels on the seafront. The city is generally busy and vibrant and you’ll find it to be much more typically Canarian than the main holiday resorts. There are plenty of things to do in Arrecife and it’s definitely worth a visit or two during your stay on the island.

    San Agustin : Travel guide

San Agustín, an outstanding archaeological site

San Agustin is a traditional and very welcoming village located in the heart of the Andes Mountains in the south of Colombia. It is the largest archaeological area in the country, with gigantic and imposing stone statues, reliefs, funerary burial mounds, paved paths and terraces, unique vestiges of a mysterious civilization that disappeared long before the arrival of the Spaniards.

    San Agustín : history

5,000 years ago, two primitive cultures lived in the Magdalena and Cauca river valleys. It was here that they met to exchange, trade and dig their graves. They became masters of sculpture using the volcanic rocks of the region, which they transformed into more than 500 life-size statues scattered over the hills of San Agustin.

What little is known about these peoples is that they had no written language and disappeared several centuries before the conquistador Francisco García de Tovar and his men were the first Europeans to arrive in this valley in the 18th century in search of El Dorado.

Five hours north of San Agustin is the archaeological site of Tierradentro, where the Paeces Indians dug deep and complex ancestral tombs decorated with geometric figures painted in white, red and black.

Did you know that? The Paeces people are still linked to their “land of the interior“, named after the conquistadors who had great difficulty penetrating this area where mountains and canyons meet. This rugged terrain allowed the Paeces to resist fiercely, and to ensure the survival of their culture thanks to their descendants who still walk the thousand-year-old paths of Tierradentro.

    St. Augustine – City Guide

St. Augustine is the oldest city in the United States that exists today. It was founded back in 1565 by the Spaniards. Since then, the city of St. Augustine has constantly existed – people have lived in it from the moment the first stone was laid in the fort on the site of the modern city to the present day. St. Augustine is located in Florida on the Atlantic coast. You can visit many attractions in the city – first of all, this is the Castillo de San Marcos Fort in the Spanish Quarter, the King Street area with museums and wineries, the Catholic Cathedral of the late 19century, many buildings in the colonial style, some of which have been restored, while others have been rebuilt. Of interest is the crocodile farm of the end of the century before last, where alligators are grown. On a nearby island is the 1824 San Agustin Lighthouse.

Actual water temperatures close to the shore can vary by several degrees compared to the indicated values. This can be noticeable after heavy rain or after long periods of strong winds. Some downwinds cause cold deep waters to replace surface waters that have been heated by the sun.
