Top choices for kitesurfing when in Spain

In order to practice safely kitesurfing we recommend to have a full equipment that has a good quality. Buying yourself a full equipment might be expensive, so that’s why many people choose rental places or schools in order to get the needed equipment. The price of buying an equipment can go up to 1800 € or even more for newer models.

A full kitesurfing equipment includes:

  • kiteboard
  • kite
  • wetsuit / comfortable swimming suit
  • lifejacket
  • harness
  • helmet
  • control device

When renting kitesurfing equipment, make sure that the equipment is in perfect shape. Sometimes the continuous use of the equipment damages its integrity and safety. If you are only an occasional kitesurfer or it is the first time when you are trying it, it is better to rent rather to buy the whole equipment. Be aware of any medical issues before practicing this or any other extreme sport.

Kitesurfing in El Médano – My Salty Sisters

My Salty Sisters are coming back to Tenerife to host our Empowerment & Kite Retreat on this beautiful Canary Island. We are taking you to El Médano, the best kite spot of
Tenerife.

As it is one of our home spots we are offering two dates during summer holidays.

I wanna go

I wanna go

In the charming village El Médano lies one of the most diverse kite spots of the Canary Islands. The bay offers wonderful free ride conditions as well as a huge playground for directional riders.
Depending on the wind you can have a very chilled or a bit more challenging session – with lot of options to learn, practice and improve. But the most important is: It is an amazing kitesurfing
spot to have fun!

El Médano is only 10 minutes away from the Tenerife South Airport (take care, there are two different airports on the island!) and easy to reach by taxi. The area offers all the infrastructure
you need to be able to focus completely on what you love most: Kitesurfing! My Salty Sisters will stay in a cosy apartment in the village.

As always, the main focus of our trip is one thing: Kiting!  We will have one to two daily kitesurfing sessions together (depending on the wind) during which we support you to get more
confidence on the water, learn new tricks or simply boost your kitesurfing skills to the next level. We provide coaching, support and (most of all) fun – on and off the water – for our group
of kite ladies.

We also offer daily body & mind workouts, such as yoga, fascial muscle relaxation, etc., a simple guide to an active and healthy way of living as well as empowerment activities and personal
development workshops.

This is more than a kite camp: Our retreats focus on empowering women on and off the water. Together we celebrate every day, session and progression, share thoughts and experiences to be
able to grow.

Our mission is to build a strong sisterhood of kite girls (and those, who want to become one) and to show the world how much women rock on the water!

  • Daily guided kitesurfing session as well as group progression coaching
  • Daily body & mind workouts (Yoga, Stretching, etc.)
  • Empowerment activities
  • Welcome drink & surprise goodie bag
  • Group workshops
  • 7 nights in an appartment, shared rooms
  • Kite storage & beach access
  • Rescue service
  • 1 no-wind activity – just in case 😉
  • 100% support by the My Salty Sisters team as well as a group of inspiring women
  • Flights to/from Tenerife South
  • Airport Transfer
  • Food & Beverages
  • Insurance (we assume no liability to any kind of damage or injury during the whole retreat)
  • Kitesurfing lessons / assistance
  • Rental gear

As always, we offer limited spots for the most personal experience. Escepcially on Tenerife we focus on small groups. Feel free to send us a message regarding
information about the spot, transfer, kite lessons, rental – or anything else, that’s on your mind.

What kite level do I need?

At our retreats, all kitesurfing levels are welcome! Please note that due to safety reasons you have to take kiteboarding lessons or assistance until you
are able to go upwind in any kind of condition (light wind, strong wind, gusts, wavy spots, etc.) and be completely confident with the self-rescue maneuver. If you
haven’t reached that level yet, we are happy to help you arrange everything with our partner school Sunset Kite
Center prior the trip. Please always inform us before the retreat about your
kitesurfing level. Even if you are a beginner or need some refreshment lessons, we will still make sure to ride together and share unforgettable experiences on the water. Of course, our team will provide coaching and share tipps with all the participants – no matter the level.

What is the difference between a My Salty Sisters Empowerment & Kite Retreat and a kite camp?

Our retreats are more than a kite camp: We want to shift the focus to the one thing that matters most to us – having fun on the water and enjoy every kite
session. We truly believe that progression comes with a feeling of safety, support and pure joy – and that’s what we want to provide to our Salty Sisters. Empowering each other is a big part
of this process, which means we will be there for every little step you do towards reaching your personal (kitesurfing) goal.

/ Kitesurf on Mero Island

Source: www. facebook.com/notes/my-sailing-experience

After check-in and parking in 3 different bays of Union Island, we went to Mero Island. It belongs to the area of St. Vincent & Grenadines. Union Island is only a few miles north. According to the rating on the Internet, kiting here is in second place after Yunyen. According to my personal rating – on the first! nine0003

From Chatham Bay (Union) we flew to Mero in just three hours. More time was spent on the passage of wind and shade for Yunien and tags. There are several anchorages near Mero Island. For my taste, the most interesting is in Karnash Bay (Salt Whistle Bay).

This is a real bounty beach. There are many moorings, catamarans come almost to the shore. There are not many places for parking, boats are parked cramped. But it’s worth it. Especially if you are traveling with a kite. nine0003

In the bay itself there are about 5-6 bars with delicious food, cocktails, lobsters. Not a big mini March (in the city the assortment is worse, the price tag is the same), nearby they sell coconuts, bananas, mangoes and papayas in the micro market. There is an otlchik for those wishing to live on the beach. Wi-Fi is caught, if there is no signal amplifier, anchor closer to the shore. The locals are not very intrusive, but sometimes someone comes up on a boat, offers fish and all sorts of things. The lagoon is flat, but the boat is slightly twisted by the wind and there is a small side wave. Rides on the bed. nine0003

But the main thing that I liked everything here is a great kite beach just 150 m from the bay. It is located on the windward side and stretches for more than a kilometer.

In principle, you can ski anywhere. There is a clearing for launching on the left side of the beach, very close to the yacht parking. At the bottom of the algae and the relief is not wavy (like stones). There are hedgehogs in the grass, but few and short-spined, I have never pricked myself barefoot. But it is better to go 150 meters to the right. There is another patch to launch. And there is a sandbar that stretches up to 100 meters or more into the sea. There, in places knee-deep, turquoise water. Nice ride and easy to learn. nine0003

The edges of the reefs are not very sharp, but at all times and at low tide I would not want to get out there. A small wave rises on a reef about 150 meters from the shore.

However, apart from a beautiful beach and kite surfing, there is nothing to do on the island. Trekking is average, in 3 hours you can get around the entire island. The cafe on the beach makes delicious cocktails

Price – 2 EUs, about 8 USD. The food is also delicious here, but somehow not cheap.

At the time of our arrival, the North Kite team was hanging out on the island. And CEP and I even took a picture with a world celebrity, one of the top riders of the team – Annabelle. nine0003

We stayed at Mero for about a week. We rode with kites and went to look at the fabulous place Tobago Cays. About which I will make a separate post.

Den-Electro-Snake was with you.

chasing the wind! Popular spots and bays for kiting

Golovna
Good afternoon everyone!
I mostly write about what interests me, is close to me or what I personally encounter. So, recently I was engaged in a very interesting request – where can I go in for cool kiting, but not so far to fly and not very expensive? Of course, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, the Canary Islands, which are in the TOP 10, immediately come to mind, but they did not fit my request at all. Therefore, I share with you the beaches and bays found within 3-4 hours of summer.

nine0003

What is kiting

A small remark, maybe someone has never tried it, but now they will be interested)
Kiting (kitesurfing, kiteboarding) is an active sport based on the traction force of a sports kite. Kite (translated from English, “kite”) is a special device, a machine for using wind power. Kiting is a very diverse sport, involving the use of different surfaces and equipment. Basically, it is divided into summer (kitesurfing on the water) and winter (snowkiting on the mountain slopes).
nine0003

Chasing the wind

1. EGYPT, NABK BAY

Such familiar Egypt can please not only lovers of beach holidays, snorkeling and all inclusive))) There are places here that attract kitesurfers from all over the world, and we are only 4 hours away from them. One of the best places for kiting in Egypt is Nabq Bay, which is characterized by a noticeable windiness. There are several kite schools where you can rent equipment, hire an instructor to learn how to fly a kite, and improve your skills.
nine0003

2. CYPRUS, LIMASSOL

This option is even closer – some 2.5 hours and you are already on the beautiful Cypriot beaches, and some of them are also a great place for kiting. Namely, the coastal zone near the St. Raphael in Limassol and Ladies’ Mile beach here in Limassol. The first one is called St. Raphael Marina, here is not only a very beautiful promenade, a good beach, many entertainment venues, but also an open sea area where the wind roams) The second – Ladies’ Mile – is well suited for beginners, as it is quite shallow here. The main feature and big plus of Ladies’ Mile is its size. The beach is about 5 km long, divided into several sections – there are equipped for a beach holiday, there are wild ones for those who are chasing the wind.
nine0003

3. GREECE, CRETE

“Greece has everything” – truly true, even places for kiting)) A stunning Greek island attracts not only connoisseurs of Greek history, cuisine and nature, but also connoisseurs of good waves and wind. There are several bays in Crete that will delight kitesurfers. One of the best is the Amoudari bay, located in the northern part of the island, just 15 km from Heraklion.

Sun, sea and the ‘big three’: How and why World Cup cyclocross arrived in Benidorm

Sun, sea, sand …. and now also the “big three” of cyclocross. That’s what springs to mind at the mention of the Costa Blancan tourist trap of Benidorm.

Long lumbered with a reputation for sunburned and beered-up Brits and north Europeans, the Spanish resort makes its debut appearance at the World Cup Cyclocross this weekend.

Wout van Aert, Tom Pidcock, and Mathieu van der Poel will all be there Sunday for what looks to be their last three-way throwdown of the winter.

The brutal towerblocks and cheap bars of Benidorm are already buzzing for the first World Cup on Spanish soil since 2011.

“The fact that more than 9,000 tickets have already been sold is a clear sign that Benidorm is going to be a great success, both for us at Flanders Classics, for the local organizers, and the city itself,” said race chief Tomas Van Den Spiegel.

“Benidorm is a well-known city here in Belgium, and therefore it is a very interesting option for us. Not only next week but also for the future.”

How and why ‘cross came to the Costa Blanca

Benidorm was branded the home of ‘package tourism’ after it became the destination of choice for north Europeans in the 1960s and 70s (Photo: Getty Images)

The UCI’s premier ‘cross series stretched its legs in recent seasons.

Trips to Val di Sole, Italy, and Dublin, Ireland, saw the sport expanding territories in its bid to hit the Winter Olympic schedules sometime soon.

World Cup chiefs are always on the hunt for new venues to expand the sport’s reach – and so hunting hosting bids from the relatively untapped terrain of Spain seemed a no-brainer.

But after racers objected to the long flight to the Alpine Val di Sole, why is the UCI taking the likes of Van Aert, Van der Poel, Fem Van Empel, and Puck Pieterse some 1,800km south from the Belgian heartland of ‘cross?

Because they’re already there.

Most of the WorldTour that’s not racing Down Under or en route to Argentina are on a training camp in the bike-friendly resorts around Calpe, Denia, and Altea – all of which are just a short drive from the high-rise skyline of Benidorm.

Indeed, Van Aert, Van Empel, Van der Poel, and Pidcock are all topping up tanlines and building base fitness on Spain’s “sunshine coast” right now.

“We long had a typical training camp destination in mind for a new race,” Van Den Spiegel told Het Nieuwsblad. “In recent years there had been tentative talks with Calpe, we had someone who thought he would get an organization there, but in the end, that never materialized. It works now with Benidorm.”

Van Aert is currently on camp a short drive south of Benidorm in Campello with his Jumbo-Visma road teammates. (Photo: Matthias Ekman)

And with a long history of attracting Belgian and Dutch tourists, Benidorm makes for a home-from-home for the lowland heartland of ‘cross.

Belgians began to flock to southern Spain in the 1960s, and it’s reported the coastal city currently plays home to some 8,000 natives of the north European country.

“After Great Britain, we receive the most tourists from Belgium and the Netherlands,” said Lucho Perez of Visit Benidorm. “We can offer them something extra with cyclocross.”

The World Cup’s trip to Benidorm is not just for the Brits and Belgians though.

Spain has long been a bit-part player in top-level cyclocross – something the nation wants to change. At present, only Felipe Orts and Lucia Gonzalez are keeping a toehold in the elite-level mud of Belgium and beyond.

“I love cyclocross and I want to push it to the next level. That’s what we’re working on right now,” said Pascual Momparler, Spanish national ‘cross coach and co-organizer of this weekend’s event.

“We now have the World Cup in Benidorm, next year there will be the European cyclocross championships in Pontevedra.”

What to expect Sunday

The Benidorm cyclocross will be no coast-tracking beach race.

The mass of tourist apartments close to the coastline limited organizer’s beachy options and forced a shift inland to two downtown parks.

Officials forecast fast, dry racing featuring grass, gravel, sandpits, and an ever-undulating dynamic on the part-man-made, part-natural track.

📸 Os dejamos por aquí alguna foto del circuito de la Copa del Mundo de #BenidormCX.

😍 No os podéis imaginar lo que significa ver como esta locura se plasma en la realidad.

— CX Benidorm Costa Blanca – CX World Cup 22/23 (@BenidormCX) January 19, 2023

As the penultimate race in the World Cup series before the final round in Besançon, France, the overall victory can be all but sealed Sunday.

In the men’s league, Laurens Sweeck and Michael Vanthourenhout are locked in a tight battle at 333 and 309 points respectively. Racing is equally close in the women’s standings, with Van Empel leading Pieterse by just 35 points.

And headline names Van Aert, Van der Poel, and Pidcock?

It could be the last time the “big three” share the startline this winter before Pidcock pivots to road mode and skips ‘cross worlds.

With eight wins from 11 starts, and no finishes lower than second, don’t be surprised to see Van Aert crowned the first male winner of the Benidorm ‘cross.

And from Benidorm, it’s a fast descent to a mouthwatering “MvdP” vs “WvA” epic at the February Hoogerheide worlds.

Ibiza – TRADITIONS AND FESTIVALS

Hotel search in Ibiza
For foreign travelers who are accustomed to the hectic pace of life, the indigenous population may seem too slow. It seems that nothing can disturb the atmosphere of harmony and serenity that reigns on the island. It will take several days to get used to the local rhythm of life, but after that you definitely won’t want to return to the old everyday bustle. Despite some slowness, the inhabitants of the city are very hardworking and have a heightened sense of responsibility. nine0005

The youngest Mediterranean resort, which is distinguished by an amazing hospitable atmosphere, wondrous beauty of nature, a large selection of entertainment and the best nightclubs in Europe and … Open

It is customary to start the working day here quite early, around 7 o’clock in the morning. In the daytime, when the heat reaches its climax, the city freezes. All shops and government offices are closed, a significant part of the people go to the beach. After 16:00 everyone starts working again and works until late in the evening. nine0005

It is worth noting the great sense of humor of the locals, their positive attitude and optimistic outlook on life is very contagious. The townspeople easily translate their failures and mistakes into a joke, but they always show concentration and seriousness in their work. Some natives may seem too “noisy”. The thing is that during a conversation they often give vent to emotions, so the argument can take place in raised tones. However, exclamations and loud remarks should not be taken as a manifestation of negativity, increased emotionality is only one of the character traits and does not carry any negative meaning. Many consider Ibiza a beach party resort, completely unsuitable for families with children. Nevertheless, here you can organize a wonderful family holiday and not limit it to just one … Open

When making an appointment with local residents, you should not rely on punctuality. Being late here is the norm, not all citizens are distinguished by punctuality. The general daily routine is shifted to the second half of the day, it is customary to have dinner here no earlier than 10 pm. At the same time, an ordinary dinner can turn into a long feast, it is always accompanied by conversations and heated debates. When choosing a topic for conversation, you should be extremely careful, some of them are considered taboo. nine0005

You should not start a conversation about politics or personal life, this can be perceived as a sign of bad manners. Indigenous people are ready to talk endlessly about sports, local culture and attractions. They have great respect for those who are interested in national culture and lifestyle. With regard to appearance, one should be guided by generally accepted rules. For an important event and a prestigious restaurant, you should wear a classic suit, and for going to a nightclub or walking along the beach, you can safely put on the brightest and most extravagant outfit, here it will be appreciated. nine0005

Ibiza invites gourmets to visit the best gastronomic establishments, each of which will surprise guests with specialties and exotic drinks. Ancient people restaurant will appeal to those who … Open

As for the holidays on the island, it is worth noting that in the summer, numerous parties are held on the beaches of Ibiza, which have already become the hallmark of the island. It all starts with an event called the Emerging Ibiza Festival, which takes place at the end of May. Its venues are not only clubs (Ibiza Rocks Hotel, Ocean Beach Ibiza, Sankeys) and beaches, but also yachts, as well as parks (Benimussa). Not only those who have already won the love of thousands of fans of electronic music come here, but also those who have yet to go this way. As a rule, the festival is closed by a guest star, whose name is not disclosed – this is a kind of surprise for the public. nine0005

The season ends with the Party Hard Closing Festival Ibiza, and it takes place in mid-September. At this time, festival visitors – both locals and tourists – have fun with all their hearts, as if it were their last day – however, according to the locals, this is exactly how you should spend time. Among the headliners are always eminent guests; during the end of the summer season, no one indulges in the slightest pleasure. But just before the party season (in mid-May), Sueños de Libertad Ibiza is held – a colorful festival during which tourists can visit contemporary art exhibitions, purchase hand-made products in the markets, and also try local dishes. There is also a place for children, for whom interesting events are organized at this time. nine0005

Fashionable parties can be diversified by visiting cultural holidays. One of these is the Fiestas de la Tierra, which takes place in early August. During his behavior, scenes from the Middle Ages are shown to tourists, and at first some cannot believe that the action takes place in the 21st century, and even at a resort world-famous for its incendiary parties. Visiting the festival is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the history of the Balearic archipelago and local culture. Among the entertainments available to visitors during the event are concerts of folk performers, theatrical and dance performances, fireworks, tasting of local cuisine, as well as religious ceremonies. nine0005

In mid-October, you can witness a colorful holiday called Ibiza Festa delle Luci. At this time, the resort is changing, the play with light shocks even those who think that nothing can surprise him anymore. Locations – the streets of the Old City. Not without DJs who perform in clubs where people dance all night long during the event (however, this always happens in Ibiza). The Festival Internacional de Cine de Ibiza is also held here, where the winners of independent cinema (actors, directors) are awarded the highest award – Falcó d’Or (Golden Falcon). Among other holidays that are widely celebrated in Ibiza, it is worth highlighting Semana Santa, Nit de Sant Joan (June 23), Dia de Verge de Carmen (July 15-16) and Festa de Sant Jaume (July 25). nine0005

The first timers full guide to the best Canary Islands

written by
Joanne Owen

updated 8/27/2021

The Canary Islands are home to the world’s second biggest Carnival and the highest mountain in Spain as well as world-class wines and beaches. Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro – all have a lot to offer travellers. But what is the best Canary Island? Read our guide and choose for yourself.

Continue reading to find out more about…

  • What is the best Canary Island?
  • 1. Tenerife – best for infinite variety
  • 2. Fuerteventura – best for wind-sports and beaches
  • 3. Gran Canaria – best for diverse landscapes
  • 4. Lanzarote – best for elegant ambience
  • 5. La Graciosa – best for secluded getaways
  • 6. La Palma – best for jaw-dropping scenery
  • 7. La Gomera – best for heavenly hiking
  • 8. El Hierro – best for utter escape
  • How to get to Canary Islands:

The information in this article is inspired by The Rough Guide to Spain, your essential guide for visiting Spain.

What is the best Canary Island?

The diversity of landscapes on the Canary Islands really is staggering, spanning dramatic deserts and snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys and towering cliffs. Then there’s the seemingly infinite number of beaches – of both the black and white sand variety – take a look at our guide to finding the best beaches in Gran Canaria as proof

What’s more, the Canaries are volcanic (hence that black sand), and volcanic islands are never dull. For example, La Palma’s Teneguia erupted as recently as 1971 – if you find that thought exciting take a look at our guide to the top 20 volcanoes around the world.

Given all this diversity, there’s no question about which is the best Canary Island – rather, it’s a case of which is best for you.  And the good thing is, no matter what your travel style, there’s an island to suits your needs.

1. Tenerife – best for infinite variety

The largest of the Canary Islands in size – Tenerife is especially suited to families and couples whose interests diverge. Say one of you is a confirmed beach bum while the other likes to hike, it’s also one of our best places to visit in winter for sun.

While Tenerife’s dry southern strip is its tourist epicentre – a string of resorts, restaurants, water parks and bars beloved by Brits – most of the island’s attractions lie beyond this entertainment enclave.

On the north coast, picturesque Puerto de la Cruz has been attracting northern Europeans for over a century, with much of its colonial grandeur remaining intact, despite the commercialisation of its seafront promenade.

Fans of Spanish food and old-time charm would do well to visit La Orotava, an unspoiled town perched on a steep hill above Puerto de la Cruz. Blessed with stately mansions, ancient churches and cobbled streets, it’s also home to an abundance of beautiful local restaurants.

To experience Tenerife’s jaw-dropping crowning glory, head inland through cool pine forests to Teide National Park, home to the eponymous iconic volcano, and Spain’s highest peak. The epic lunar landscape around Mount Teide is best seen from a cable car in the company of a local guide as part of a wider island tour.

Where to stay in Tenerife:

  • For La Orotava stays: Hotel Alhambra
  • For beach stays: Hotel Cleopatra Palace
  • For luxury stays: Hacienda del Conde

2. Fuerteventura – best for wind-sports and beaches

Next up in our guide to the best Canary Islands is Fuerteventura. The second largest island, Fuerteventura lies less than a hundred kilometres away from the African coast and is one of the least developed islands. Wind-swept, sandy and barren, it boasts the best beaches of the archipelago, most of which are blessed with fine golden sand.

Once a sleepy fishing port, unpretentious Corralejo is now a lively seaside resort town with a mix of Brits, Germans and locals contributing to its vibe. This tapas-bar-rich town is also close to some of the island’s top natural attractions.

The main highlight is Corralejo National Park, a swathe of protected sand dunes best explored on a buggy or quad bike trip. Alternatively try a 4×4 fix with a juddering jeep tour which takes in Cofete Natural Park – think cacti and incredible coves.

If you’re seeking a beautiful beach experience, look no further than the soft sand of Playa del Moro. Its epic, windy setting gives it an appealing wildness, and it’s also one of the area’s best places to surf.

Lastly, no visit to Fuerteventura would be complete without heading to idyllic Isla de Lobos. Travelling to, and exploring, this largely uninhabited nature reserve is rewarding for nature-lovers and families alike.

Where to stay in Fuerteventura:

  • For Corralejo stays: Luxury Cayetana
  • For beach stays: Castillo Playa
  • For family stays: h20 Tindaya

3. Gran Canaria – best for diverse landscapes

The third largest of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria comes a close second to Tenerife in terms of having all-round appeal – dramatic scenery, perfect beaches, lively resorts, cultural sites aplenty, and restaurants worth writing home about.

Gran Canaria’s dramatic landscape comes courtesy of its classic volcanic cone profile and if you’re up for an adventure take a look at our guide to exploring the rugged heart of Gran Canaria on foot. The island’s mountainous nature also causes huge climate variations. So you might leave Las Palmas in damp and cloudy conditions and an hour later be enjoying blazing hot sun on the spectacular Maspalomas Dunes.

As for Las Palmas itself? At once a major commercial hub, historical centre, cosmopolitan resort, and essential seaport, this is arguably the most beguiling of Canarian capitals. Adorned with attractive museums and galleries, it’s a stunning place to amble of an afternoon with an informed Canary Islands travel guide taking you on an Old Town walking tour.

For an easy hike to an epic sight the entire family can enjoy, head to Roque Nublo. Given that this mighty rock was once worshiped by the island’s indigenous population, this is sure to satisfy culture vultures and outdoorsy types alike.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria:

  • For rural stays: El Rinconcito de Tejeda
  • For beach stays: Valentina Beach Apartments & Suites
  • For family stays: Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa

4.

Lanzarote – best for elegant ambience

The youngest of the seven main islands, stylish Lanzarote is also the most aesthetically pleasing – largely thanks to the work of one man. César Manrique was a visionary architect who stamped his creative architectural style on lots of local projects.

To see the magical side of Manrique’s vision in situ, head to Jameos del Agua. The first visitor attraction Manrique designed, this mood-music accompanied fantasy journey through a gorgeous volcanic grotto and underground lagoon really is out-of-this-world.

Alongside Manrique’s unique architectural vision, Lanzarote is also known for its idiosyncratic viticulture that sees Malvasia wine grapes grown in the island’s craters. Seeing as the island’s wine is made distinct by its volcanic terrain, it makes good sense to combine wine-tasting with a visit to the island’s Timanfaya National Park.

For family-friendly resort life, plus golden beaches and a bustling marina that’s perfect for people watching, Playa Blanca comes up trumps. It’s also where you catch the forty-minute ferry to Fuerteventura. Speaking of ferries, for a more remote (and incredibly beautiful) beach experience, head to tiny La Graciosa – a picture-perfect place to get away from it all for the day.

Where to stay in Lanzarote:

  • For boutique stays: Hotelito Rural Flor de Timanfaya
  • For beach stays: Apartamentos Acuario Sol
  • For family stays: Grupotel Cinco Plazas

5. La Graciosa – best for secluded getaways

At the northern tip of the Lanzarote is the small fishing port of Orzola. This is the embarkation point for a ferry service to the tiny Isla Graciosa, run by Líneas Maritimas Romero. With superb beaches, this is the place to get away from it all for the day.

For an unforgettable view of Isla Graciosa drive up to the Mirador del Río an observation gallery built into the cliffside – yet another of César Manrique’s unmissable creations. This is probably the most spectacular mirador in the Canaries. Great cliffs curve down to the beach, with Graciosa just across the strip of water called simply El Río (The River), and two smaller islands, Montaña Clara and Alegranza, in the background.

Combined with a small section of the northwest coast of Lanzarote, the islands form the Parque Nacional del Archipiélago Chinijo. The only sound here is the wind gently whistling through El Río.

Spain is well known for its amazing wines and this tailor-made trip to The Lands of Wine allows you to explore two famous regions: Ribera del Duero and La Rioja. Four different wineries, from traditional to modern, and many restaurants on the way await your visit.

Where to stay at La Graciosa:

  • For couples stays: La Pardela Excellence Apartamentos
  • For beach stays: La Graciosa Camelia Beach Vistas Mar
  • For family stays: Apartamentos Graciosamar

6.

La Palma – best for jaw-dropping scenery

The entire island of La Palma has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve for its remarkable scenery – some parts are dramatically volcanic, others are lushly forested. It’s no wonder that the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands is known as both La Isla Bonita (The Beautiful Island) and La Isla Verde (The Green Island).

The capital, Santa Cruz de la Palma, is an attractive history-rich town that’s well worth a day (or two) of exploration. Clean and bright with a mix of traditional and modern architecture, back in the day (namely, the Renaissance era), it was the third most important port of the Spanish Empire, after Seville and Antwerp.

A cool way to uncover La Palma’s volcanic origins (in both senses of the word “cool” – these caves are chilly) is to take a guided tour of the unique 500-metre-long, 3-metre-wide lava tunnel.

Moving now from subterranean exploration to peak adventuring, the pinnacle of La Palma’s scenic highlights is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, where the finest views of the archipelago can be seen from Roque de los Muchachos.

You can drive most of the way up and then ramble around the volcanic mound on foot. Blanketed in dense Canarian pine woods, and zigzagged with deep ravines, the park is a picture-perfect paradise for ramblers.

Where to stay in La Palma:

  • For Santa Cruz de la Palma stays: Hotel Emblemático Holiday Time
  • For beach stays: Puerto playa
  • For country stays: Apartamentos La Caleta

7. La Gomera – best for heavenly hiking

Columbian history, rugged terrain, and honey rum – more on that later – La Gomera is cheese to Tenerife’s chalk. It’s a mountainous island, criss-crossed by long, winding roads, with a coastline dominated by dramatic cliffs – and few beaches.

For stunning views overlooking the island’s main town San Sebastián and over to Tenerife, you might want to investigate booking a stay at Parador Conde de la Gomera. If you’re keen on paradors, you might also like our guide to the best hotels in Spain: pick of the paradores.

But the real jewel in La Gomera’s crown is its interior – lots of vertiginous verdant valleys that are often capped by clouds, with the Parque Nacional de Garajonay at its heart. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this park has a well-marked circular trail and contains rare laurel forests, subtropical plant species and archaeological sites – all the while serving up sweeping views.

Though small in size, La Gomera is big on delivering food and drink specialties, such as almogrote, a spicy cheese paste. To wash it down, there’s lots of local wine to choose from, or ronmiel liqueur (literally, rum honey). While Canarian rum is popular on all the islands, this is a La Gomera speciality, as is guarapo – a honey-like syrup made from the heated sap of Canarian palm trees.

Where to stay in La Gomera:

  • For sea views: Apartamentos Tapahuga
  • For various activities: Telegraph Hostel
  • For town stays: Hotel Torre Del Conde

8.

El Hierro – best for utter escape

Last (but not least) in our guide to the best Canary Islands comes rustic El Hierro – the smallest and most south-westerly island in the archipelago is also the hardest to get to, and the least set-up for tourists.

If you’re looking for bouncing bars in the company of 24-hour party people, this isn’t the island for you. And, as with La Gomera, if you’re looking for picture-perfect beaches, this isn’t your nirvana either. El Hierro is a sanctuary from tourist trappings – a haven for divers, hikers, and get-away-from-it-all-ers.

Valverde, the only Canarian capital located inland is small, with a cluster of friendly bars and restaurants. Other impressive inland sights include the Tubo Volcánico, a 295-foot volcanic cave, and El Sabinal, a forest of juniper trees (sabinosas) that have been twisted, gnarled and bent by the wind. If you’re desperate for a bit of beach time, Playa del Verodal is El Hierro’s best.

For fine dining and diving, you’ll want to head to La Restinga, a laidback fishing village with a black sand beach, diving centre, and bunch of good fish restaurants. Neighbouring Bahía de Naos is a marine nature reserve.

Where to stay in El Hierro

  • For wonderful views: El Laurel
  • For coast stays: Salitre
  • For beach stays: Lightbooking Varadero La Restinga

At present there are several flights to the Canary islands from the US operated by British Airways, Air Europa and Iberia, that usually go via Madrid or via London airports.

You can also travel to the Canary Islands by ship. The most popular operators are:

Excellent – 8 reviews for Canary Islands tours

      Great

We liked the interior design of the rooms with antique furniture. Staff was very friendly and customer oriented. Breakfast even though with not a big variety it was delicious and was promoting local products, which was what we were looking for. The food and the service at the restaurant was excellent as well. Flexibility at the breakfast opening hours was greatly appreciated.

Windsurfing el medano tenerife: WINDSURF – Red Rock Surf & Kite Academy, El Medano, Tenerife, Canary Islands

    Опубликовано: April 24, 2023 в 8:46 pm

    Автор:

    Категории: Miscellaneous

    El Medano (Tenerife, Spain)

El Médano, Tenerife, Canary islands (Spain), is a world wide famous spot for windsurfing. We were there in April 2016, and, with this review we want to give some tips to those going there for windsurfing (but not only).

At Tenerife, you can do windsurfing almost exclusively at El Medano, which has two bays suitable for this purpose: that one to the west of the village (Playa Sur), and El Cabezo, to the East.

The two bays are divided by a rocky and flat cape. The spots work fundamentally with winds from the northeast, that is, with the Trade Winds, more frequent and likely when sunny and stable conditions prevail on the Canary Islands. But sometimes, they can also blow with partially covered skies. If there are low pressures around the islands, these conditions disturb the flow of air which generates the Trade Winds, and winds can blow from the other quadrants. In this case, the spot can also work with winds from the South-East and South-West (on-shore), or from the west (side), generally less strong than the Trade Winds (we enjoyed a West wind at about 20 knots). The westerly wind is partially disturbed in the Medano Bay (Playa Sur) by Montana Roja, and generally does not enter at Cabezo Playa (too sheltered by the village buildings). With West Wind, at Playa Sur you have flat water conditions. With winds from the South, you can have a bit of shore-break and Waves, of variable height,  depending on the intensity of the wind and swell, possibly coming from offshore. If the wind comes from the North, both the bays are sheltered, and there is calm.

With South West, you can also surf at the beach of La Tejita (west of Montana Roja), where, however, there are no rental facilities. Finally, we point out that we’ve seen wind at 25-30 knots from the north/north-west direction at Las Americas (West coast), where, usually, people go only for wave surfing. There was no one out doing windsurfing, on that occasion. There are no windsurfing rental centers here (some only for wave surfing). Conditions there did not appear prohibitive, even if the shore in several places, is full of rocky plateaus and breakwaters, so that you can not do mistakes. But it is better to ask information to the expert riders at El Medano (also with regard to possible strong currents), before going out here, and have problems. That day, in El Medano, no wind at all …

But to El Medano, you go to catch the Trade Winds. July and August are the most reliable months for these winds, although, they tell us that occasionaly even in these months there are days with no wind, or light wind. During the rest of the year, you can have a few days, one, or two consecutive weeks, with beautiful Trade Winds, and others with scarce or absent wind. So, except for July and August, it would be better to move on predicitions, although, in case of absence of wind the island allows you to do some very nice trips (read this article).

For those who want to evaluate alternatives to Tenerife, they tell us that Fuerteventura is a bit more windy. In particular, Sotavento, not being sheltered at North, also works with the winds coming from the north direction, which, as mentioned, in El Medano, can not enter. However, it should be clear that if the Aliseo is disturbed by weather conditions around the archipelago of the Canary Islands, you won’t take much of the wind also at Fuerteventura.

The websites most consulted  by local riders to verify wind predictions for El Medano are:

    – muchoviento.net

    – surfmedano.com

    – windguru.cz

As regards windmeters, you have a very good one at El Cabezo, the data of which are available here.

Here, you have a real time webcam which shows El Cabezo bay.

At Playa Sur at El Medano, you, generally, enter into water to begin your session in the South West part of the bay, at the end of the seafront, where there are all the windsurfing rental centers, and where there is the Hotel Playa Sur.

This bay provides quieter conditions than El Cabezo, both because the coast is mostly sandy, and because you have less wave here. With Trade Winds, waves that you can surf side rise near the dam facing the village. In the bay, instead, choppy conditions prevail. Note that the part of the bay in front of the village would be reserved for bathing, while further west, toward the Montana Roja  (and downwind with Trade Winds), to Kitesurfing. But, in fact, anarchy reigns: swimmers and kiters invade the central portion of the bay that would be reserved for windsurfing. Conditions with more significant waves, and shore-break, appear if Trade Winds blow strong for several days, or as a result of swell coming from offshore, because of far away storms (we are in ocean). With winds up to 20 knots, however, the bay appeared suitable for everyone, and we met lots of beginners practicing.

We have to underline the fact that all (local riders), and persons engaged in the rental centers,  advised us not to go out from the bay, both with North East (passing the promontory of Montana Roja), and with West wind (passing the cape in fronto of El Medano), because winds and currents (the say that they may be very strong, even at 6-7 knots), push hopelessly offshore, and there is no good swimmer that can counteract them. So, it is better to adhere to this advice.

El Cabezo, instead, is the spot reserved for more experienced riders, at least with strong Trade Winds and rough seas. If, however, the wind does not exceed 20-25 knots and the sea is not very big, even the intermediate surfers can try the spot (bump and jump conditions, with some nice waves that you can begin to surf). The value of this spot is that you can surf side. You can enter into water from two sandy beaches: the first one next to the hotel Arenas del Mar (further east), where there is a beach bar (chiringuito), or the beach just close to the area for campers (autocaravan). Surfing front side, you end up in front of the rocky point facing the village. Here is a rocky plateau, and especially the submerged rock named Godzilla, which, in case of wipe out, are ready to eat your equipment….

In the google map, at end of article, you will find the various places listed above.

In the South part of Tenerife, the temperature is fairly constant throughout the year (around 20-25 Celsius degrees, regulated by the Ocean), with low moisture. However, there is some seasonal excursion, with warmer in summer and less in winter. When we were there in April, the air temperature ranged between a high of 28 degrees (sunny days with little wind), and a minimum in the evening, or at dawn, of 18-20 degrees. The water temperature was 20 °C (we went out with long wetsuit 3/2 mm, and barefoot).

As for the rental business, there is plenty of choice. We have visited the Surf Center Medano Playa Sur managed by the Gahmig family. We met Arne, one of the instructors, who is very kind and friendly. The center has excellent Naish equipment of the current year (see movie).
We also visited the Tenerife Windsurf Solutions, which has windsurfing equipment of the main brands of the current year

Our piece of advice, frankly, is to book your equipment rental only in July and August, if you do not go there with your equipment. In April, when we went there, there are no big crowds, so you can reserve day by day, depending on conditions.

Finally, with regard to the shops selling windsurfing equipment, we have not seen particularly large businesses. The most significant shop appeared Cabezo Surf shop in Calle La Graciosa. Others predominantly sell Surf Wear.

Arne Gahmig, of Surf Center Medano (but also Howtowindsurf101.com webmaster), has published a very detailed guide on its website. El Medano is his homespot, and, for that, Arne is able to really provide many useful tips.

Arne provides guidance about dangerous or restricted areas in the bay of the spots, about the typical winds that blow, the waves conditions, schools and windsurfing rentals, as well as on stores selling equipment.

Finally, he also gives many helpful tips on El Medano village, with proposals for accommodation, bars, restaurants, and alternative to windsurfing.

So, if you want to read all his precious suggestings, click here.

See at the bottom of this article to find the spot on google maps.

    Enjoy. Fabio

El Medano and Los Abrigos, Tenerife

Notes about the trip to Tenerife and La Gomera in October 2013, all series about this trip are here.
Not far from the south airport of Tenerife, on the coast, there are two resort towns of El Medano and Los Abrigos. El Medano is a mecca for wind and kite surfers. A new, not at all historical resort town on the south coast.

The right wind for these sports is blowing here and it blows regularly. My wife Sasha really likes windsurfing, and although she does not do it regularly, she learned to ride on all her recent holidays (in Rhodes, Kos, Thailand, then in Egypt). She does not like to ride in the Gulf of Finland – the water is very dirty. nine0003 That’s why during our holiday in Tenerife we regularly went to El Medano so that Sasha could practice “beach start” and “water start”.

The wind was weak for the first week, it was possible to slowly “tram” under sail back and forth:

only by the end of the second week it “blew”. And then the whole coast was filled with kiters.

While our mother was skating, Polina and I hid from the wind. The wind here carries a huge amount of sand. Instantly the whole head, all the clothes, everything is filled with sand. Probably, this is not the right place for non-core tourists to relax. nine0004

In the evening, the promenade is filled with quite a “civilian” (not surfer) type of people. Restaurants are full, souvenirs are sold. But the souvenirs are predominantly surfer-oriented:

Some special spirit is present here, but I must say that the surfer audience did not seem very friendly to me, it is such a closed world, more for its own:

Windsurfing is a complex science to look decent, you have to come here for the whole summer and really study. It seems to me that learning how to sail under a sail is more difficult than just on a board. The first steps, perhaps, are easier, but then things get more complicated, and some things simply cannot be understood without a good coach. So we plan to come back here for a month to learn. Nice place:

East of El Medano is Montana Roja (Red Mountain). I never managed to run to it – windsurfing training in this area was more important.

Another semi-desert beach behind the mountain. In windy weather, it is also chosen by wind and kite surfers.

Further west, closer to Las Americas, is the resort town of Los Abrigos. It lies a little on the outskirts, there are fewer tourists here. Pleasant and calm place. There is a lot of unfinished real estate around the edges of the town. It seems that people rushed to build / invest money. But then everything fell into place. nine0003 The town center with its small port and promenade is absolutely charming.

In each of the restaurants on this short promenade, we were offered to go to dinner. They don’t seem to be spoiled by customers. We chose one, as it was called now and I don’t remember. They took a huge plate with different fish. It was very tasty and cheaper than in Las Americas. Los Abrigos left the most pleasant and delicious memories.

Island paradise at the Ritz-Carlton Abama resort, Tenerife

The Abama overlooks the volcanic island of Gomera

LUX steps into a different universe of tranquillity, colour and cuisine at The Ritz-Carlton Abama resort in Tenerife, a short hop from western Europe

Stepping out of your room into a kaleidoscope washed by warm salty air is a delicious feeling. The kaleidoscope was the lavishly planted sea of flowers in multilayered, terraced tropical gardens around the villa where we were staying. A short stroll along the path took us past even more plants, trees and flowers of every conceivable colour, which rose first past several organically shaped pools and then onto the terrace where breakfast was served.

    Follow LUX on Instagram: luxthemagazine

The Ritz-Carlton Abama is located on top of a cliff overlooking the ocean and a volcanic island opposite. During breakfast time, this island was always covered in a mysterious, horror-movie murk, almost indistinguishable from the light-blue sky around it. The sun rises slowly in equatorial zones, and even though the morning air had a hint of chill in it, due to the coldness of the sea currents, we were indeed in an equatorial zone off the coast of Africa. The Canary Islands may have become host, in part, to unglamorous mass tourism recently, but they first came into Western awareness as a hive of distinctive species and ecosystems.

The villas are set in lush gardens

The days soon took on a familiar rhythm. Adjacent to the breakfast terrace, a 50-metre pool, curvaceous and irregular, is boarded by rows of sun lounges with a view down over the gardens to the sea. As the sun became stronger, we moved down to the beach, where a seafood and grill restaurant was washed by calling breezes and salty air. There is cliff jumping from either side of the bay where the long, sandy beach is located, and in the next bay you can jump from black volcanic rock to black volcanic rock admiring great schools of crabs, blue and orange, living in the twilight zone beneath them, between land and ocean.

Read more: Gaggenau’s latest initiative to support emerging artisans

Swimming in the clear sea, sheltered by a breakwater, involved being accompanied by fish – sometimes individuals, sometimes in shoals, occasionally monochrome, usually in an array of colours to match and even outdo their plant-based counterparts on land, with fluorescent blues and oranges all the vogue.

If we had not had the energy in the morning, an early-evening game at the tennis centre based around perfect clay courts next to the (celebrated) golf course was a way of adding to the exercise quotient, before either moving to one of the restaurants, or dining on room service on our own terrace overlooking treetops, banana plantations, the ocean and the volcanic island of Gomera. In the evening, this was lit up in pinks and greens, and strung by lights from its occasional roads, just visible from our vantage point 20 miles away across the water.

Abama’s main pool – one of seven at the resort

Fine dining is not often associated with the Canary Islands, something the original creators of Abama sought to change when building this resort. Unusually for an island in the Atlantic, 1,000 miles from the southern tip of Spain, it has Michelin-starred restaurants and an array of other dining spots with specialised cuisines and, often, spectacular views.

The most notable is Kabuki, a Japanese restaurant high above the resort and the 18- hole championship golf course. The whole resort is built on a steep volcanic slope, meaning the view down from Kabuki to the gardens, plantations, swimming pools and the sea is particularly captivating at dusk. Aperitifs are served on the terrace, and inside, the restaurant serves a celebrated blend of local and Japanese cuisine. The flame-seared fish nigiri is easily the most memorable thing on the menu.

At the other end of the resort, although by no means at the other end of the scale, El Mirador is an eagle’s nest atop cliffs that plunge down to the ocean. From the tables you can hear the sea crashing against the rocks far below and smell the ocean spray. Appropriately, El Mirador serves grilled fish and seafood, and is also celebrated for Spanish cuisine from a different part of the country: black rice paella. Like a number of the restaurants in the resort, it also serves a mean bowl of Canarian potatoes, which maximise on intense, nutty taste, accompanied by red and green chilli sauces.

The kitchen and terrace at El Mirado

The cascade of colours at sunset at El Mirador is a match for any oceanside location in the world, and a fitting end to a day that began with the kaleidoscope of flowers outside the villas. The villas themselves are the most secluded category of accommodation in a resort that is bigger than it may seem, so well blended is it with its natural context. We had a seaview suite, including a large living room, huge bedroom and two balconies, which should be plenty for any couple. It can be combined with an adjoining (equally large) bedroom for a family area big enough to match many people’s homes. Interior décor is all cool stone and tiles, with equally large bathrooms to match. And that fabulous morning cascade of colour as soon as you draw the curtain, or open the door.

One-bedroom suites in villas at The Ritz-Carlton Abama Tenerife start from €615, plus tax. Find out more: ritzcarlton.com/abama

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama Resort with Adults Only Villas

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama is an impressive resort with superb facilities for all the family…

    Description & Location

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama Resort is located on the sunnier west coast, close to the village of Playa San Juan. 30 minutes drive from the south Tenerife airport.

Instantly luxurious, designed in a red hue Moorish style. Set amongst extensive tropical gardens, leading down to its own golden sand cove beach (funicular lift takes you down the final stage to beach level).

    Accommodation

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama Resort has a total of 315 rooms and suites in the main Citadel building.

All spacious with a choice of tropical garden views or  sea facing aspect, albeit from a distance. Each room is tastefully decorated, in a bright, but restful modern style.

For those travelling with children, we particularly suggest the extra comfort and space offered by the Junior Suites with their integrated living space. The hotel also has numerous interconnecting Deluxe Rooms. These can usually be confirmed at time of booking, although early booking is suggested – especially at peak school holiday periods.

In addition there are 144 Villa Rooms and Suites. Set in 4 rows in the garden leading down towards the sea, with each row having its own shared swimming pool.

The Adults Only Villas are in a separate exclusive terrace area reserved for adults only – no children under 18 – with their own shared swimming pool and your own buggy to drive around the resort.

They include soft drinks/beer during the day, up to 4 snack food presentations around the pool.

    Facilities and Activities

    • Facilities include numerous speciality restaurants in differing
    • locations spread throughout the resort (see note below)
    • Several swimming pools – Some are adult only
    • Excellent sporting facilities, including tennis
    • Gym
    • Spa
    • Championship golf course.
    • The kids club caters for children from 4-12  years
    • Freelance babysitting can be arranged, at extra cost
    • Children under 4 years can go into the club if accompanied by adult or babysitter

    CHIC CHECK

The Ritz-Carlton, Abama Resort has excellent facilities, spread over the extensive 400 acre estate.

An impressive resort, with superb facilities for all the family.

There is quite a steep hill leading down from the main hotel past the manicured gardens to the beach cliff top, but for the less energetic a regular buggy service (complimentary only for villa suites) or resort train operates on demand.

When half board has been pre-booked, this will be limited  to a few of the restaurants with a credit for dining in the others, should you desire.

A few of the restaurants will be adult only and/or require those wishing to dine as a family to eat earlier.

The resort has fantastic leisure facilities with a championship golf course adjacent, and an extremely well equipped tennis club. Lessons for both can be prearranged on request.

The resort is in a tropical estate, fringed by banana plantations.

There is a small village with some restaurant options within a 10 minute drive, or the more developed areas of south Tenerife are just 15 minutes away.

Tenerife is an interesting island to explore, with vastly different scenic attractions, so we would suggest car hire to add to your flexibility.

    Weather in Marmaris

Marmaris is a magnificent Turkish resort located on the picturesque coast of the Aegean Sea. Most of the vacationers are residents of Germany, France and Holland, but there are fewer Russian tourists here than, say, in Kemer or Alanya – and therefore almost all sellers, waiters and hotel employees do not speak Russian at all, as is the case in others country resort.

The beach season starts here in May, but the best time for swimming is during the summer months, September and October, when the water is at its warmest. The remaining months of the year are suitable for a relaxing holiday on the coast, as well as excursions.

Marmaris is famous for its excellent tourist infrastructure. Most of the hotels are located along the waterfront – mostly 3-4-star compact hotels with a small territory; many hotels in Marmaris operate on the HB system (breakfast and dinner). The embankment itself, paved with neat tiles, stretches for as much as 12 kilometers – in the evenings, many tourists walk here. Despite the fact that the city has hotels with animation, as well as two water parks and amusement parks, Marmaris is considered more of a youth resort than a family one.

The beaches of the city delight with cleanliness and order. True, the beaches here are quite narrow, and at the peak of the season there is nowhere for an apple to fall.

The city has many unique sights preserved from time immemorial: it’s hard to believe, but Marmaris was founded in the 11th century BC. e.! You can learn about the past of this magnificent city in Ashartepe, the archaeological center in the north of Marmaris – in addition to the ruins of ancient buildings, there is also a very beautiful garden with peacocks.

Marmaris is a famous port city. You can admire the yachts in Netsel Marina. Surprisingly, up to 750 yachts can moor here at the same time! And in the evenings in this area it is very fun and crowded, because next to the port lies the famous bar street, where you can have a good rest. On the long promenade there are bars, hookahs and clubs for every taste, with different audiences and music (r’n’b, house, disco, pop and even Russian music), and along the clubs in the summer there are bar counters where you can try cocktails and local spirits.
