When choosing a place to sit or lie down, leave enough space between yourself and the next towel. If possible, more than if you were dressed.
In this way, you make it clear that you do not intend to invade your neighbor’s personal space. This is another moment of comfort.
Do not try to have sex
Debauchery, whether with your partner, with someone you just met on the beach, or with yourself, is big no-no . Most nude recreation seeks to break the link between stripping and having sex.
In fact, the British Naturist Organization’s “Naturist Beach Code” explicitly states: “Any sexual activity is just as objectionable and just as criminal as any other public place.”

According to Lili Simpson, a 30-year-old Londoner who moved to Copenhagen about two years ago, Danes have an easy time with nudity. For example, they usually do not wrap themselves in a towel to change into a bathing suit. At the same time, in Denmark there are no laws prohibiting public nudity, so some women sunbathe topless. Klaus Jacobsen, a 36-year-old boy who grew up in the suburbs of Copenhagen, remembers that when he went to the beach with his family as a child, almost all the women, including his mother and aunt, were topless. But now the situation has changed. Danes have become less likely to use the right to be topless in a public place. Thorben Larson, chairman of the Danish Naturist Association (naturist is another term for nudists) is not convinced that the number of nude swimmers is declining across the board – among older Danes, Larson believes it is increasing – but agrees that the younger generation much less interested in nude bathing.

Public nudity is losing popularity not only in Denmark. Topless sunbathing has become less and less fashionable among French women over the years. The 2019 survey found a similar trend among women in the UK, Germany and Italy.
As for the United States, it is more difficult to assess here. The 1970s movement to legalize nudity on public beaches was much less successful in the US than in Europe. On the one hand, according to a survey conducted by a naturist organization, more Americans are embracing the idea of vacationing in the nude. From 2015 to 2021, the proportion of people surveyed who said they would try to strip on the beach if they knew it was safe and legal jumped from 28% to 45%. On the other hand, says Nude & Natural contributor Mark Storey, “Many of the nude beaches that were in the US during the heyday of naturism no longer exist.” nine0003
And those beaches that are still functioning attract completely different people than in the 1970s – then it was low-income youth.
However, according to Charles Daney, a naturist blogger and nude beach goer with forty years of experience, in the 1980s, these beaches were fairly well balanced by age and gender. According to him, there are now many more men than women, sometimes their share reaches 95%.
The decline in nude sunbathing, especially among young women, defies simple explanation. The naturists and historians I consulted for this article have made many suggestions about this. For example, the population of American and European cities is filled with people from cultures and religions where public nudity is not welcome, and in addition, modern people are better informed about the risk of getting skin cancer.
