Costa Caleta is best for…

Sun seekers: Set in an idyllic location with shallow turquoise waters, Costa Caleta beach is perfect for working on topping up your tan and lounging back getting stuck into that new book you recently bought ready for your Costa Caleta holiday. With a warm climate and year-round sun, you can holiday at any time of the year and will still need the factor 30!

Families: Holidays to Costa Caleta offer fantastic family-friendly hotels with excellent facilities, as well as the resort being within easy reach of brilliant waterparks and an excellent zoo. There is also a great choice of restaurants and bars to enjoy.

Golf enthusiasts: This resort is located only minutes away from the first 18-hole golf course in Fuerteventura. A fantastic venue designed by Juan Catarineu which can be enjoyed all year round. It is widely considered as one of the best golfing destinations on the Canary Islands.

Getting around Costa Caleta

By car: If you’re interested in taking day trips and exploring the island, hiring a car would be a sensible choice. The roads are good in Fuerteventura, and the island is small enough to get across in a couple of hours. However, check out the documentation you’ll need before you travel and remember the Golden Rule of driving on the right.

By bus: Buses are clean, prompt, and reliable. There are 16 bus-routes, covering most of the island, making this a great way to soak up the scenery without having to worry about driving on the ‘wrong’ side of the road and where you’re going to park.

By bike: Perhaps the most serene way of seeing the sights, cycling is very popular on holidays to Costa Caleta. There are dedicated cycle-paths and trails, and bike-hire companies catering for all beginners through to the pros. Fuerteventura is becoming one of the top spots for cycling in Europe.

By foot: Stunning views to take in and great hiking tracks will be waiting should you decide to avoid any form of transport. Explore everything that this natural beauty has to offer while on a Costa Caleta holiday.

Events in Costa Caleta

Kite Festival: The international kite festival is held every year, in November, located in the nature reserve of the dunes of Corralejo. This event is aimed at attracting both amateurs and professional kite enthusiasts. During the four-day event, there are exhibitions, competitions, workshops and special sessions for kids. Roughly 700 kites in various shapes, colours and sizes decorate the sky in the Gran Canaria breeze.

Carnival season: The Fuerteventura carnival season takes place during February and March every year. Each major town hosts its own carnival with a selection of cultural, sporting and musical events. The main event takes place in the capital Puerto del Rosario, and the carnivals that take place in the popular tourist resorts of Costa Caleta and Corralejo usually held on to two weeks after the carnival in the capital.

Water sports: For the 33rd time in a row the Windsurfing / Kiteboarding World Cup will be held in Fuerteventura, and it’s highly recommended. The event takes place down in Playa Sotavento where you can experience world stars closer than anywhere else. There will be live music and a colourful support programme suitable for the whole family creating a unique atmosphere for a great day out. There are also legendary World Cup parties that run on through till dawn if that’s your thing.

Craft market: Every three months, March, June, September and December the small village of Tetir becomes home to the popular craft market. This event attracts residents and tourists from across the whole island where you can find aloe vera products, pottery and handmade jewellery. Expect a festival-like atmosphere with the typical Canarian music and cultural activities; sometimes there’ll even be activities for the kids such as inflatable castles or bicycle tours.

Crete, Greece – Live Weather Update

    Spring Weather in Crete

After a cold, wet winter, the weather begins to improve in Crete in spring. This season which is classed as April and May starts off with a low average temperature of 17°C which quickly jumps up to a much warmer 24°C by the end of the season.

At this time of year, average highs are 20°C and 24°C, respectively, while average lows are 10°C-12°C, respectively.

How Much Does It Rain In Crete?

Rainfall drops significantly during this season, down from 21mm over six days in April to a meagre 11mm, which is just over three days of rain. If you don’t want to see rain on your holiday, you’re best off visiting the island toward the end of May.

    Spring Sunshine Hours

The sunlight hours rapidly increase in May with six daily sunshine hours in April and eight daily sunshine hours in May.

So although you’re bound to get the odd cloudy spell during your spring holiday in Crete, you’ll rarely get a totally overcast day and the sun will shine for at least a short while each day.

How Warm Is The Sea In Crete?

Spring is preferable to autumn in terms of both rain and sunshine, but unfortunately, the sea remains too cold for swimming throughout the season. The average sea temperature is a cold 17°C in April and a slightly warmer 19°C in May.

    Summer Weather in Crete

How Warm Is Crete In Summer?

Summer usually June to September is the most popular time to visit Crete, when temperatures are high and there’s hardly any rain. At this time of year, the average temperature is around 24°C, peaking at 26°C in July and August, which are the hottest months of the year.

There is a big difference between day and evening temperatures average highs range from 28°C to 29°C, while average lows range between 18°C and 22°C.

This sharp decrease in temperature after sunset provides welcome relief for travellers struggling with the heat of the Mediterranean sunshine.

Although these average low temperatures are very mild, they can feel a couple of degrees cooler than they actually are, due to low humidity and the sea breeze blowing in off the coast.

    Sirocco Winds

Although temperatures generally keep under 30°C, they can rise up to a stifling 40°C in the south, when the island’s weather is affected by siroccos hot winds blown over from the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa.

Sirocco winds first hit the south of Crete and blow northward, bringing with them extremely high temperatures, aridity and airborne sand. As a result, the sky can become hazy and the air can often appear dusty.

    Meltemi Wind

Crete’s prevailing wind is from the northwest and is known as the Meltemi. This cool wind is coveted by sailors, windsurfers and kite surfers, as well as sunbathing holidaymakers in need of some relief from the sizzling summer sunshine.

    Sunshine Hours and Sea Temperature

At this time of year, Crete experiences a huge number of daily sunshine hours 11 in June, 13 in July (the sunniest month) 12 in August and 10 in September.

During this season, the average temperature of the sea around the island is remarkably warm, ranging from lows of 22°C in June up to highs of 25°C in August.

How Much Rain Does Crete Get In Summer?

Rainfall is extremely unlikely to occur in summer in Crete. July through August sees a tiny average of 1mm each month and September has just a smidge more at 10mm falling over an average of two days.

    Autumn Weather in Crete

    Autumn Temperatures In Crete

Autumn is usually classed as October and November in Crete and it’s a fair bit cooler than summer. But compared to most of northern Europe, the island is still very mild.

In October the average temperature starts off at 20°C and drops to 17°C in November.

Holidaying in Crete in autumn is best for travellers who don’t mind the odd overcast or rainy day. It’s also an excellent month to visit if you want to avoid crowds at the of the peak season.

Average highs of 24°C-21°C during the day make this a great time to visit Crete for sightseeing and exploring, instead of lounging by the pool or at the beach.

With just six hours of daily sunshine in October and three hours of daily sunshine in November, you won’t get much chance to sunbathe at this time of year, anyway.

The sea retains the heat from summer during this season, when the average sea temperature is 23°C in October and 20°C in November. So even if the sky is overcast, the sea will still be warm enough for a swim.

Evening Weather In Autumn In Crete

Autumn evenings in Crete can get very chilly, with an average low temperature of 16°C in October and 13°C in November. Due to the low humidity and cool breeze which blows in from the coast, evening temperatures often seem cooler than they actually are.

    Heavy Autumn Rain

After an extremely dry summer, the heavens open in Crete in autumn, when rainfall drastically increases. October sees an average of 40mm of rain falling over an average of six wet days. And in November you can expect eight wet days.

    Winter Weather in Crete

How Cold Is Crete In Winter?

The winter months in Crete are from December to March when the weather is mild but wet and blustery. During this month, the average temperature is around 13°C, peaking at 14°C in December and March and dropping down to a low of 11°C in January, the coolest month of the year.

During the daytime, average highs are 16°C-17°C andaverage lows drop to 10°C-8°C. With such cool nights, you should pack plenty of winter clothing.

    Does It Snow in Crete?

Sub-zero temperatures and snow are rare in the coastal areas of Crete, although they’re not totally foreign. In February 2004, temperatures dropped to a record low of -0.8°C and a light dusting of snow covered the whole island.

Don’t let these freak conditions put you off visiting Crete, as the island is generally much warmer than more northern holiday destinations. Temperatures can sometimes rise up to 20°C when the sky is clear and sunny.

    Does It Rain In Crete?

How Winter sees the most rain for Crete. December has the most rainfall with 89mm of rain which falls on nine wet days.   January has the highest number of wet days, with 78mm of precipitation falling on 14 rainy days.

    Is Crete Sunny In WInter?

The number of sunshine hours plummets to an average of four in winter, peaking at five daily hours in March. This translates into lots of cloudy, overcast weather, but the sun should still poke its head out for short spells each day.

The low sunshine hours and a chilly sea temperature of 15°C-17°C, makes a day at the beach quite a brave decision.

island of Crete in summer, autumn, winter, spring

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands

Located in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea, the ancient island of Kaphtor, known throughout the world under its modern name Crete, is washed by the Carpathian (Cyprus) Sea from the east, with south – Libyan, from the west – Ionian, and from the north – Aegean.

He is repeatedly mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible, where you can find information about how God brought the inhabitants of Caphtor, called the Phoenicians (Captars), to the coast of the Middle East, they built the cities of Tire and Sidon, spreading their settlements over all available harbors, and forming a powerful network of Phoenician colonies. The most famous is Carthage, subsequently waged long wars with Rome.

The Evangelist Luke also left testimonies about Crete, describing in detail the storm near the island, when the Apostle Paul, sailing on a ship past the capes of Sideros (Salmon) and Litinos, warned sailors about an impending hurricane called Euroclidon. The storm that broke out off the southern coast lasted two weeks and during this time the sun never came out.

The Arab chronicler Masud reports that in 535 AD a terrible earthquake changed the contours of the island of Crete: the western shores rose, forming rocky cliffs, and the eastern ones plunged into the sea.

The largest Greek island is located in two climatic zones, Mediterranean and North African. The weather of Crete is characterized by very hot summers and mild winters.

    Winter

    Chania region in winter

On the island of Crete, the weather at this time is typical of the subtropical zone, the zone of influence of which includes the entire island – cyclonic.

Areas of low pressure from the Azores archipelago, moving along the Mediterranean Sea, are gaining strength and, “cling” the northern regions of the Sahara, bring with the southern flows of notos and either zephyros to Crete not only a noticeable warming, but also rains, sometimes with fine sand.

In the event of an invasion of cold masses of the troposphere from Europe, brought in by the rear parts of the Azores cyclones, the weather here is quite cold, so that snow falls not only in the mountains, but also in the valleys.

Cold boras and euroclidon winds bring beautiful cloudiness, and then clear weather, as a result of which the rapid “work” of the sun’s rays begins.

Myths about the ancient gods of Greece and descriptions of the famous sights of Crete that are associated with them are waiting for you on this page.

    December

Winter in the town of Vafipetro

Shortened daylight hours are observed this month: no more than 6.5 hours. The low sun slightly warms the surface of stony soils, and the midday temperature of Crete on average does not exceed plus 12-17 degrees.

In mountainous areas, where the troposphere cools by 5-6 degrees per kilometer, these readings, in accordance with the height, can drop to zero, and on the peaks of Pakhnos and Ida there is usually snow and the temperature most often has negative readings.

At night, the mercury columns of thermometers drop to + 9-14, frosts are frequent guests in the mountains, but the water in the seas is very warm, up to + 18, and above it on sunny days, the number of which this month can reach nineteen, in the absence of wind , a beautiful phenomenon of nature occurs in the form of swirling steam.

    January

    Winter Psiloritis

Longitude of the day increases insignificantly, but it is not significant for air warming – prevailing Euroboruses and Euroclidons, northeastern and northern troposphere mass transfers in the Eastern Mediterranean in winter, affect thermometer readings: at night +7- 12, during the day +11-16, but sometimes there are cold snaps to zero.

Cyclones from the west periodically continue to attack the island, bringing rain and cloudy weather, the number of days of which in this month reaches 10-15 or more.

Sea water cools slowly, but remains warmer than the atmosphere: 15-16 degrees.

    February

    Crete in February

The weather in Crete in February is still unstable.

This month the length of daylight hours increases noticeably (up to 11 hours), and the probability of rainy days slightly decreases.

But the dominant northern winds, borras and mesoborras, continue to cool the troposphere of Crete: at night + 7-12, in the daytime – + 12-17 degrees.

In some periods, cold air currents from Europe can cool the surface layer of the troposphere to zero, but the sea remains warm: plus 15-16 degrees.

    Events and holidays

Feast of the Epiphany in Crete

Winter time in Crete is a season when there are few tourists and vacationers. Local residents celebrate the Nativity of Jesus Christ, New Year, Epiphany (Photo), Candlemas. These holidays are very suitable for exploring the sights of the island, its culture and traditions.

Thus, instead of Father Frost in Crete and Greece, Basil the Great Saint of Cappadocia brings gifts to children. Greek children are sure that it is he who puts long-awaited gifts in their shoes on New Year’s Eve. In honor of St. Basil, special pies are baked here, called “Vasilopites”, inside of which a “lucky” coin is hidden.

And on the day of Theophany, that is, Epiphany (Baptism), which is popularly called Fota, during the consecration of water, the priest throws the cross into the sea. Wishing men and youths dive, trying to get it first.

From the second half of January in Chania and other towns of the island, the sales season begins, which officially ends on the last day of February and continues unofficially for the first two weeks of March. The best time to save money! It is best to visit a lot of historical and natural sights of the island in silence, make the necessary purchases, and find exclusive new clothes in this winter time.

    Spring

Spring on the plain of Castelli

From the end of March, humid air masses “look” at the island less and less.

By May, the Azores cyclones, which fed the land of Crete and the Balkans with rains, stop their activity, and over the eastern Mediterranean, a tropical type of weather is gradually established, characterized by clear skies, northern trade winds-etesias and high thermometer readings.

But until the beginning of summer, little by little, the precipitation falls, nourishing the hard-leaved flora of Crete, whose appearance is even scientifically called Mediterranean.

    March

    Triopetra beach waiting for tourists

The sun’s rays are already strongly warming the lower layers of the troposphere, more sunny days and fewer clouds.

Temperature indicators are rising: in the afternoon it is usually plus 15-17 degrees, at night plus 10-13. The water starts to warm up to +16.

The length of the day “steps over” 12 hours.

But the weather on the island of Crete in March often brings surprises: occasionally cyclones come over Gibraltar, bringing heavy rains and thunderstorms with them.

    April

Georgoupoli town in the Chania region in early spring

The average daytime temperature reaches +16-21. The length of the day is growing, the number of overcast and cloudy days is decreasing, and the amount of precipitation is noticeably reduced.

Temperatures at night vary around +12-15, and the water is even warmer – up to plus 17. And more and more often stuffy siroccos, which are especially felt on the southern coast of Crete, “drop in” here.

Everything on the island is in bloom at this time, in a hurry to complete its cycle before the end of the rainy season.

And only in the mountains at this time there is an excess of water, as the process of snow melting is in full swing. The weather in Crete in April is the most favorable for relaxing trips around the island and sightseeing.

    May

    The Omalos Plain in May

Following the vertical rise of the Sun above the horizon, the average daily thermometer readings also increase: the temperature in Crete in the afternoon is plus 22-27 degrees, nighttime readings are plus 16-19.

The surface layers of water in the seas are heated up to 19-twenty. Therefore, already in the first decade of May, the island is one of the first in Greece to open the beach season.

Thunderstorms and rains can rumble a few more times this month, but inclement weather in Crete in May is rather an exception, because according to statistics, the number of sunny days here reaches 28-29, and rainy days – no more than 2-3.

    Spring events in Crete

    Apokries in Rethymno

A bright, significant event of this period is the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, celebrated on March 25th.

It coincides with Greek Independence Day. All-night vigils and solemn divine services are celebrated in churches and monasteries.

In all cities of the country, processions of schoolchildren and dance groups in colorful national clothes are held, and military parades are also held in the capital of the country, Athens and the capital of Northern Greece, Thessaloniki.

However, the main holiday of spring in Crete, as in all of Greece, is the Resurrection of Christ. Cretans definitely visit churches during Holy Week, and the most solemn liturgy takes place on the night of Holy Sunday. Anyone who wants to see the folk customs of the Cretans at Easter, taste the amazing dishes prepared in abundance for the Easter table according to old recipes, we advise you to find an opportunity to visit the island at this time.

    Summer

    Summer in Chania

This is the time when the etesia season comes into its own, taking them away from the sirocco. Northerly winds, called slippers (there are many names for this phenomenon), continuously raise waves. Starting early in the morning, they reach great strength by noon, thereby softening the heat. In the southeast of the island, cirrocumulus clouds sometimes form, which melt in the evening along with gusts of northern etesia. The northern coast of Crete, which is most prone to the “blows” of the northern trade winds, is especially picturesque in the summer months: against the bright blue background of the sea, white lambs of the waves jump, leaving foam traces.

During the summer months, the climate of Crete is dry – there is almost no rain, clouds appear very rarely, strong heat is softened by gusty winds, and air humidity is very low, so the climate is conducive to general healing.

The weather in Crete in June will please connoisseurs of the sea and the sun. It is in this month that the influx of beach lovers begins in the numerous resorts of the island.

The heat intensifies, daytime temperatures fluctuate between 23 and 30 degrees, but often go off scale, exceeding 35 degrees in the shade.

The nights are cooler: +16-25, the water in the sea heats up to 23 Celsius. Grass and plants gradually “transition” to an economical mode of evaporation, because there is no rain here until October.

    July and August

    The famous Cretan goats Kri-kri

During these months the heat reaches its peak, but for Cretans this is normal. Siesta – rest in the afternoon at the hottest time of the day, is very common here. The mercury column from the very morning stands at about twenty-three degrees, and in the middle of the day it sometimes exceeds +30. But the gusts of northern slippers noticeably ease the feeling of heat, and the low humidity of the troposphere makes it easy to endure the heat.

Night temperatures fluctuate between 21-27 degrees, and the water in the seas surrounding the island heats up to +25-26 and above. There are no clouds, even cirrus, in the sky, and there is no need to mention the rains during these months.

Festive events in Crete in the summer

Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin in Crete

The yachting season reigns on the island, numerous competitions are held.

Lovers of this type of dispute can rent a yacht, enjoy riding on the waves of the Carpathian and Libyan seas, as well as admire the numerous sailboats whitening on the turquoise and blue waves of the sea.

For gourmets, starting in July, the island hosts the “Sardine Festival”, where you can taste a variety of dishes prepared from freshly caught fish.

The main holiday of the summer is the Assumption of the Mother of God, celebrated on August 15th. Referred to as “Summer Easter”, this event is widely celebrated throughout the country, the day is declared a holiday. Churches hold special services. They are performed according to a different order from the Russian Typicon. Everyone who came to Crete at this time can participate in an amazing holiday and visit the numerous monasteries of Crete: Feromeni, Preveli, Akrotiri and Kardiotissa.

    Autumn

    Preveli Monastery in autumn

At this time the heat begins to subside. The meltemi-etesias blowing from the north are weakening, cirrus and cirrocumulus clouds appear in the sky, and the length of the day is decreasing.

The sun is rising lower and the probability of cyclones passing from the Azores is increasing. Most fruits and fruits ripen and the amazing velvet season begins.

In the second half of autumn, the number of cloudy days increases, the frequency of cyclones “diving” across the Mediterranean increases, bringing rain and thunderstorms to Crete. The humidity of the troposphere increases, and the pressure decreases.

    September

    Agios Pavlos bay in autumn

The weather in Crete in September still bears little resemblance to autumn.

In the first month of autumn, the heat is strong: daytime temperatures reach up to 30 degrees or more, at night it is a little cooler: + 20-25, the water in the sea warms up to 26.

There is almost no precipitation, and the number of sunny days reaches 29.

The swimming season continues, there are significantly fewer tourists in the second half of September, the very first weeks of September are no different from the end of August.

    October

    Olive harvest

The Cretan Velvet Season continues this month.

But gradually, cyclones from the Azores archipelago become more active, bringing long-awaited coolness and rains to the island.

The sun burns less and less with its rays. The length of the day is shortened. The temperature takes on a more “European” look.

At night the temperature does not rise above +19-20, and during the day it is plus 24-26. But you can still swim: the water is warm – up to +23 Celsius.

    November

    Crete in November

The last month of autumn is characterized by an increase in the frequency of cloudy and overcast days. “Atlantic breath” drives rains, fogs to the island, the temperature drops: at night to + 15-17, in the daytime to + 18-22. Frequent northern borras cool the troposphere to 12 degrees and below. The water is cooled down to +21 Celsius.

The length of the day by the end of November is only 6.5 hours.

Throughout autumn, but especially in November, gusty winds with sand blow from the Sahara and strong storms are not uncommon.

    Events in autumn

    Ohi Day in Rethymno

In September, Crete, as well as throughout Hellas, hosts numerous festivals, the wine festival being especially popular here.

Lovers of the blessed drink can enjoy not only it, but also grape juice and all kinds of late berries – they are waiting for them in the small home wineries of Crete, hospitable hosts.

At the end of October, fans of agritourism can visit the numerous olive groves, where the harvest of olives begins at this time.

The main event of autumn is the Ohi (no) holiday celebrated with military parades on October 28th. This is the word that the Cretans, along with all the Greeks, uttered to the fascist regime of Mussolini. Also, the inhabitants of Crete remember the battle near Marathon on the second Sunday of November, and on the 17th day of the last month of autumn falls “Polytechnio Day”, when all the inhabitants of Greece pay tribute to the students who fell in the fight against the “Black Colonels” regime.

Crete is the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, 300 days a year caressed by the bright Greek sun. Come to Crete at any time of the year – they are waiting for you here, they will gladly receive you, and they will see you off with the hope of a new meeting!

What is the best time of the year to visit Crete?

    September 7, 2018

The best time to visit the island of Crete is between May and October, because due to its geographical location (between Europe and Africa), here you can enjoy 300 days of sunshine a year. This makes it no less attractive to visit in the rest of the year. We have prepared for you the most useful information that you need to know when planning your trip to Crete.

What is the best time of the year to visit Crete?

The high season in Crete starts from the end of June and lasts until mid-September, which other Greek islands cannot boast of. The hottest months are July and August.

If you are planning to explore the sights and nature of the island of Crete at a time when there is not yet a large influx of tourists, then mid-May – early June is ideal for you. Also at the beginning of September, when the air temperature begins to gradually decrease, most travelers with children return to their homeland, the school time begins, you can safely enjoy the rest and the warm sea. It is still open in September and October, prices in hotels and apartments are reduced, which makes it possible to visit the island even on a limited budget.

What to do in Crete in March and April

The average temperature in Crete in March and April is 17-20°C during the day and 10-12°C at night. Crete is quite a large island, so some hotels and restaurants are open all year round. It is also a great time for leisurely sightseeing without being surrounded by crowds and having to wait in lines. Ferry services and flights are more limited compared to high season, however you can always find a few suitable flights via Athens (at Heraklion Airport and Chania Airport ).

At the beginning of March in Crete, you can become a member of the Pierra Creta event dedicated to the development of skiing in Southern Europe. The first event took place in March 2014 and is now held annually. It is also planned to be held in March 2021. You can find out more about this here.

On March 25, Greece celebrates a big holiday – Independence Day. On this occasion, parades are held every year and the whole island dances and celebrates this significant day.

Visiting Crete from May to August

This is the most popular time for tourists from all over the world. Usually, from the end of April until the end of October, there are direct flights to Crete from almost all major European cities and many other countries to Airports Heraklion and Chania . The average temperature in Crete from May to August is 24-29°C during the day and 15-21°C at night.

The following important events take place on the island during the summer months: The Cretan Wine Festival which takes place in Rethymnon in July.

Also in Rethymnon every year since 1987, the Renaissance Festival has been held. Almost all performances take place at the Erofili Theatre. Visitors can enjoy theatrical performances, international musical performances and exhibitions.

The Dormition of the Mother of God (August 15) is one of the most significant religious holidays in Greece. On this day, many churches around the island organize special events ( Panigiri ).

Is it recommended to visit Crete in September and October?

It’s no secret that September and October are the best months to visit the island. At this time, the flow of tourists subsides and you can safely enjoy the warm sea. The average air temperature in September and October is 24-27°C maximum and 16-19°C minimum. Here are some of the events taking place on the island at this time:

Chestnut Harvest Festival, held in the villages Prassas and Elos . The most important event is the day of OHI (NO), which is celebrated on October 28th. On this day in 1940, the Prime Minister of Greece Ioannis Metaxas rejected the ultimatum of the Italian dictator Mussolini demanding to submit to the Italian government and let their troops go to the Balkans.

Things to do in Crete from November to February

The coldest and rainiest month in Crete is January. The average temperature from November to February fluctuates between 16-21°C during the day and 8-13°C at night.

Winter sports enthusiasts will be pleasantly surprised by the fantastic skiing opportunities at White Mountains (Lefka Ori) .

Winter time also provides an excellent opportunity to visit some of the most popular traditional events in Crete: the Tsikoudya festival, which usually starts in the first days of November and lasts until mid-December. During this time, the locals participate in the process of making tsikudya (raki), called kazanemata. Making raki in Crete is an experience you won’t want to miss. Be sure to bring a bottle of raki for your friends along with other souvenirs, believe me, they will be grateful to you!

You can witness another important religious event – the feast of the Epiphany, which is celebrated in Greece on January 6th. The traditions of this one of the oldest Christian holidays are quite remarkable.

    Earth Hour

Sunset from the Teide National Park by El Coleccionista de Instantes

Saturday 28th March, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, is Earth Hour, a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

You can stay at home and turn off all your non-essential lights for an hour (a very good thing to do, by the way), or you can pop along to Garachico, where Earth Hour celebrations are beig held as part of preparations for International Environmental Film Festival Canarias.  There will be an afternoon of activities related to the environment and sport. From 4pm until 6pm in the Glorieta de San Fransisco, you can watch the sun thanks to the Museum of Science and the Cosmos’ solar telescope. Anyone who wishes may see the sun’s surface with its sunspots and solar flares.

That’s followed by a story competition where students from 6th grade of Garachico schools describe experience with the environment and what it means for them. Then, you can enjoy ‘lively FICMEC’ with the screening of various short films of the International Environmental Film Festival Canarias.

The Garachico Earth Hour celebrations reach their climax at 8:30pm, when the lights in the main streets of Garachico, and homes of residents who want to collaborate, will go out. Also, the start of the race Garachico 8KM race joins the FICMEC initiative and will run through the streets of the town with the lights off.

    Los Gigantes

We calculate that the 4 main days of the Los Gigantes Carnaval 2016 should run from Friday, 19th February 2016 to Monday, 22nd February 2016, thus:

    • Friday, February 19th, 2016: Election of the Queens.
    • Saturday, February 20th, 2016: Kid’s activities
    • Sunday, February 21st, 2016: Main parade from 5pm.
    • Monday, February 22nd, 2016: Burial of the Sardine from 9pm.

    Güímar

    • Friday, February 12th, 2016 – Las Burras de Güímar

    Los Cristianos (Arona)

We’ve attempted to come up with a way of predicting the dates of the Los Cristianos (Arona) carnaval before and been unable to do so because it does not publish information in advance and it doesn’t stick to a regular program. Until 2008, the main parade of carnaval in Los Cristianos had ‘usually’ happened on the Sunday, 12 days after Shrove Tuesday. Then in 2009, it was 19 days after. We’ve tried again now, but still no regular pattern emerges, with some years that gap being as much as 26 days after Shrove Tuesday.

Confirmation of details for 2015 came just 2 days before events began.

Los Cristianos Carnaval events run from the 4th to 14th of March 2016. See detials. Los Cristianos International Carnival Programme 2016

NB: We provide these dates so you can plan ahead, with the usual disclaimer that we cannot be held responsible for changes made beyond our control.

Photo DANIEL L. CETRULO for the Ayuntamiento de Arona (Arona Town Hall).

Carnaval in Los Cristianos this year takes place from Friday, 6th March to Monday, 16th March, 2015.  It’s officially the Carnaval of Arona – Los Cristianos being a port and town in the district of Arona – but events do take place mostly in Los Cristianos. A pedantic distinction you might think, but I mention it because, if you were searching online, you would probably want to include both names to ensure you found everything. The Gran Coso Apoteósico del Carnaval en Los Cristianos (Main Parade of carnival in Los Cristianos), beginning alongside the Arona Gran Hotel, will take place on Sunday, 15th March, 2015 from 4pm.

    starspots Archives – Universe Today

Ever wonder what happens on the surface of other stars?

An amazing animation was released this week by astronomers at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics (AIP) in Potsam Germany, showing massive sunspot activity on the variable star XX Trianguli (HD 12545). And while ‘starspot’ activity has been seen on this and other stars before, this represents the first movie depicting the evolution of stellar surface activity beyond our solar system.

“We can see our first application as a prototype for upcoming stellar cycle studies, as it enables the prediction of a magnetic-activity cycle on a dramatically shorter timescale than usual,” says Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam astronomer Andreas Kunstler in a recent press release.

The images were the result of a long term analysis of the star carried out using the twin STELLA (STELLar Activity) robotic telescopes based on Tenerife in the Canary Islands. The spectroscopic data was gathered over a period of six years, and this video demonstrates that, while other stars do indeed have sunspot cycles similar to our Sun, those of massive stars such as XX Tri are much more intense than any we could imagine here in our own solar system.

STELLA on the hunt. Image credit:

Even the largest and closest of stars have a minuscule angular diameter –measured in milliarcseconds (mas, our 1/1,000ths of an arc second)—in size. For example, we know from lunar occultation timing experiments that the bright star Antares at 550 light years distant and 5 times the radius of our Sun is about 41 mas in size. At an estimated 910 to 1,500 light years distant and 10 times the radius of our Sun, XX Tri is probably comparable, at about 20 mas in size.

That’s tiny from our perspective, though the massive starspot depicted must be truly gigantic to see up close.

To image something on that scale, astronomers use a technique known as Doppler tomography gathered from high-resolution spectra. Over said six year span covering a period from July 2006 to April 2012, 667 viable spectra were gathered, covering 86 total rotational periods for the star. Incidentally, that’s not much longer than the average equatorial rotational period of our Sun—remember, as a ball of gas, the rotational period of our Sun varies with solar latitude—at about 22 days.

Our relatively sedate host star. Image credit: Dave Dickinson

The views compiled by the team show a pole facing, Mercator projection, and a spherical ‘real view’ of the star. Of course, to see XX Tri up close would be amazing, if a not a little intimidating with those massive, angry spots dappling its surface.

Watch the animation, and you can see the changing morphology of the spots, as they decay, merge and defuse again. Just how permanent is that massive pole spot? Why are we seeing spots across the pole of a star like XX Tri at all, something we never see on the Sun? Do other stars follow something analogous to Spörer’s Law and their own version of the 11-year sunspot cycle that we see on Sol?

Capabilities such as those demonstrated by STELLA may soon crack these questions wide open. Composed of two 1.2 meter robotic telescopes jointly operated by the Institute for Astrophysics at Potsdam and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), STELLA combines the capability of a wide-field photometric imager with that of a high-resolution spectrograph, ideal for this sort of analysis of remote stellar surfaces.

A diagram featuring the twin STELLA instruments. Image credit: Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP)

Hey, here’s a crazy idea: turn STELLA loose on KIC 8462852 and see if the hypothesized ‘exo-comets’ or ‘alien mega-structures’ turn up… though it weighs in much smaller than XX Tri at 1.4x solar masses, KIC 8462852 is also about 1,400 light years distant, perhaps just doable using high resolution spectroscopy…

The location of XX Tri (also known as HIP 9630) in the northern sky. Image credit: created by the author using Stellarium planetarium software

Want to see XX Tri for yourself? An RS Canum Venaticorum variable orange giant star (spectral type K0 III) located in the constellation of Triangulum the Triangle, XX Tri shines at magnitude +8. 5 and varies over about half a magnitude in brightness. Its coordinates are:

Right Ascension:  2 hours 3 minutes 47 seconds

    Declination: 35 North 35 minutes 29 seconds

The more we learn about other stars, the more we understand about how to live with our very own sometimes placid, sometimes tempestuous host star.

Spot evolution on the Star XX Triangulum (sic)

Does XX Trianguli look familiar? That might be because it was featured as the Astronomy Picture of the Day as ‘imaged’ by the Coude Feed Telescope on Kitt Peak way back when on November 2nd, 2003.
