Travel Startup Funding This Week

It’s always notable when either Insight Partners or Y-Combinator is backing something. Canary Technologies reported investment by not one, but both. Oh, and it’s got backing from Fidelity-affiliated F-Prime Capital, too.

Justin Dawes

Travel startups announced nearly $188 million in funding this week.

>> Canary Technologies has raised $30 million in Series B funding, led by Insight Partners with continued participation from F-Prime Capital, Y-Combinator, Thayer Ventures, Commerce Ventures and others.

The company has raised a total of $45 million to date.

The Canary platform is meant to help hotels modernize guest management, with digital features that enable contactless check-in and check-out, guest messaging, upsells, tipping, digital authorizations and digital contracts.

The platform is used by thousands of hotels in more than 75 countries. Clients have included Four Seasons, Best Western, Rosewood Hotels and Radisson hotels, the company said.

This latest funding will go toward hiring, strengthening the platform and expanding business globally.

“Canary’s mission is to help hotel operators modernize their tech stacks to deliver the best guest experience possible and remain competitive in the evolving lodging landscape,” said Harman Singh Narula, Canary co-founder, in a statement. “Guests want to engage with digital solutions, like Contactless Check-In and Digital Tipping, and hoteliers are increasingly adopting Canary’s platform to meet this demand and streamline operations.

>> ConnexPay has raised $110 million in growth equity investment, led by FTV Capital with contributions from previous investors.

ConnexPay can accept payments from consumers and pass that money to its clients through a single platform, which it said requires clients to negotiate only one contract and work with a single team. The single platform also gives clients access to that money as soon as a customer pays.

ConnexPay was founded in 2017 with a focus on the travel industry but has expanded to serve other verticals. ConnexPay has more than doubled its number of active clients and employees over the 12 months, the company said, adding that it is profitable.

The Atlanta-based company plans to expand internationally in Europe and beyond as it continues to enhance its platform.

The company has now raised a total of $145 million.

>> WeTravel, a booking and payments tech platform for multi-day travel operators, has raised $27 million in Series B funding. It was led by Left Lane Capital, with participation from existing investors Base10 Partners and Swift Ventures, as well several angel investors.

The latest investment brings the California-based company’s total capital raised to $34 million. It was founded in 2016.

In 2022, WeTravel expects to complete roughly half of a million transactions through its platform for more than 3,000 travel companies and tour organizers.

Going forward, the company plans to grow its team as it strengths its existing tech and adds more features. New features for business owners include better control of cash flow and the ability to pay suppliers and stakeholders.

“To extend our platform’s capabilities for users, we’ll be investing in multi-day travel businesses to engage, transact and retain their stakeholders and increase revenue,” said Johannes Koeppel, co-founder and CEO, in a statement. “What this platform extension means is opportunity for travel businesses to have access to the necessary booking and payment options that will help grow their travel business.”

>> The startup Bob W. has secured $20.9 million (21 million Euros) in Series A funding, led by IDC Ventures, Elevator Ventures, Verve Ventures and Flashpoint.

Based in Finland and Estonia, Bob W. is a short-term rental booking platform that says it offers higher quality experiences in individual rentals.

The rentals are in handpicked neighborhoods and contain furniture and design by local artists, the company said. Bookings can include features like breakfasts, gym access and local experiences.

Revenue has grown 800 percent year-over-year, and there is an average guest rating of 4.8 out of 5, the company said. It was founded just before the pandemic.

The company plans to expand geographically and strengthen its tech platform. The expansion plan includes the addition of more than 20 cities in Europe, the company said.

“Our goal is to use the funds to create a new industry benchmark for digital experience, and to support our explosive growth in new European markets beyond the UK, Spain, Finland and Estonia, where we currently operate,” said Niko Karstikko, co-founder and CEO, in a statement.

Company Stage Lead Raise
WeTravel Series B Left Lane Capital $27 million
ConnexPay Growth Equity Investment FTV Capital $110 million

Cybersecurity Researchers Build a Better ‘Canary Trap’

During World War II, British intelligence agents planted false documents on a corpse to fool Nazi Germany into preparing for an assault on Greece. “Operation Mincemeat” was a success, and covered the actual Allied invasion of Sicily.

The “canary trap” technique in espionage spreads multiple versions of false documents to conceal a secret. Canary traps can be used to sniff out information leaks, or as in WWII, to create distractions that hide valuable information.

WE-FORGE, a new data protection system designed in the Department of Computer Science, uses artificial intelligence to build on the canary trap concept. The system automatically creates false documents to protect intellectual property such as drug design and military technology.

“The system produces documents that are sufficiently similar to the original to be plausible, but sufficiently different to be incorrect,” says V. S. Subrahmanian, the Distinguished Professor in Cybersecurity, Technology, and Society and director of the Institute for Security, Technology, and Society.

Cybersecurity experts already use canary traps, or “honey files,” and foreign language translators to create decoys that deceive would-be attackers. WE-FORGE improves on these techniques by using natural language processing to automatically generate multiple fake files that are both believable and incorrect. The system also inserts an element of randomness to keep adversaries from easily identifying the real document.

WE-FORGE can be used to create numerous fake versions of any technical design document. When adversaries hack a system, they are faced with the daunting task of figuring out which one of the many similar documents is real.

“Using this technique, we force an adversary to waste time and effort in identifying the correct document. Even if they do, they may not have confidence that they got it right,” says Subrahmanian.

Creating the false technical documents is no less daunting. According to the research team, a single patent can include over 1,000 concepts with up to 20 possible replacements. WE-FORGE can end up considering millions of possibilities for all of the concepts that might need to be replaced in a single technical document.

“Malicious actors are stealing intellectual property right now and getting away with it for free,” says Subrahmanian. “This system raises the cost that thieves incur when stealing government or industry secrets.”

The WE-FORGE algorithm works by computing similarities between concepts in a document and then analyzing how relevant each word is to the document. The system then sorts concepts into “bins” and computes the feasible candidate for each group.

“WE-FORGE can also take input from the author of the original document,” says Dongkai Chen, Guarini ’21. “The combination of human and machine ingenuity can increase costs on intellectual-property thieves even more.

As part of the research, the team falsified a series of computer science and chemistry patents and asked a panel of knowledgeable subjects to decide which of the documents were real.

According to the research, published in ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems, the WE-FORGE system was able to “consistently generate highly believable fake documents for each task.”

Unlike other tools, WE-FORGE specializes in falsifying technical information rather than just concealing simple information, such as passwords.

WE-FORGE improves on an earlier version of the system—known as FORGE—by removing the time-consuming need to create guides of concepts associated with specific technologies. WE-FORGE also ensures that there is greater diversity among fakes, and follows an improved technique for selecting concepts to replace and their replacements.

Almas Abdibayev Guarini ’21, Deepti Poluru Guarini ’19, and former postdoctoral researcher Haipeng Chen contributed to this research while with the Department of Computer Science.

Dream and reality of canaries. Group “What to do?” in St. Petersburg and Berlin

In September in St. Petersburg searches were carried out at the homes of participants in the art project “Party of the Dead”. The formal pretext is suspicion of “insulting the feelings of believers”, but in fact the “Party of the Dead” held several bright anti-war actions, the photos are popular in social networks, and the Chekists took up the project participants who remained in Russia. The founder and ideologist of the project, Max Evstropov, left for Georgia on time, and those who were friends with him, in particular, St. Petersburg artists Dmitry Vilensky and Olga Egorova (Tsaplya), began to be involved in the case. After a search and interrogation, they left for Germany.

Dmitry Vilensky and Olga Tsaplya are members of the Chto Delat? group, which will turn 20 in 2023. It is an association of left-wing philosophers, artists and activists. On the basis of the Rose House of Culture, they hold lectures, seminars, exhibitions and film screenings.

The artists told Radio Liberty about their forced departure from Russia, the “Party of the Dead” case and their new works, including the film “Canary Archives”.

– Have you ever thought about emigration before, were you going to stay in St. Petersburg?

We took an anti-war position, believing that this was a line from which it was impossible to leave

Olga Tsaplya: It was clear that in the end this moment should come. We were waiting for a signal. In the meantime, we decided for ourselves that we would stand firmly together with our students, because we have a lot of responsibility: the school, our young comrades, the House of Culture, our friends, relatives, and we are responsible for them.

Dmitry Vilensky: Since over the past 20 years we have been engaged in activities that are not entirely compatible with the policy of the Russian state, this was expected. We have weighed the risks for a long time. But, on the other hand, we believed that our place was in Russia. These long years have created a huge scene, which is now under attack. In principle, we played openly, we have open foreign funding, we never hid it, everywhere we put the logo of the organizations that supported us. We took an anti-war stance on social networks, believing that this was a line from which it was impossible to leave.

– Novaya Gazeta published an interview with Kristina Bubentsova, who was searched and interrogated in connection with the Party of the Dead case. She tells how rude the search was, how they threw things on the floor, asked mocking questions. Did the same team of guardsmen work in your country house? How was the search?

Anti-war action of the group “Party of the Dead”

We are not terrorists, not extremists, we are artists who were engaged in political art

Olga Tsaplya: Not so. It seems that we managed to enter into a more balanced, or something, relationship with the people who came to search our place. There was a serious investigator who deals with murders, rapes, all sorts of major cases, there were several comrades from the FSB, a search specialist, witnesses … Seven people came to our house. They came very aggressively, and at some point it became clear that this was also partly a game for the investigator. They played that we are terrible criminals, but in fact they understood that we are normal citizens of this abnormal country.

Dmitry Vilensky: They understood that we were connected with some kind of anti-state activity, but it was very difficult for them to understand what kind of activity.

Dmitry Vilensky and Olga Egorova (Heron)

Olga Tsaplya: What is anti-state activity in our case? We are not terrorists, not extremists, we are artists who were engaged in political art, who run a school and a recreation center where there is a platform for expression. In a normal country, this cannot be a crime. It seems to me that the investigator came with one feeling, and then … in general, no, there was no such thing as throwing things on the floor.

They found a few words “Ukraine” and “war” in the book and attached it to the case

Dmitry Vilensky: Finding a space for communication, translating it into your protocols is very difficult. But in fact, here, as with thieves, you can lose. If you are not afraid, your hands are not shaking, you behave calmly, you understand that you are right, and not they, this inner rightness helps to get away from direct violence. I hope… Maybe it’s naive.

Olga Tsaplya: We just got lucky.

– How long did the search last and what was seized from you?

Dmitry Vilensky: The search lasted from 6.30 to 10.30, then we were immediately taken to the Investigative Committee, and books and two computers were confiscated.

Action group “What to do?” “Praise to Dialectics”, 2006

Olga Tsaplya: It was even funny. In one good philosophical book written by our comrade, they found a few words “Ukraine” and “war” and attached it to the case.

Dmitry Vilensky: They also confiscated the Art Journal, which contained an article by Max Evstropov about the “Party of the Dead”.

Olga Tsaplya: We immediately asked them: “What do you want to take?” They say: “We will look for books and computers.” What they wanted, they took.

“Parties of the Dead” is one of the most prominent artistic and activist statements in recent times

Dmitry Vilensky: We and our other comrades are very worried about the confiscated computers. They were not password-protected and, frankly, I do not really understand how it is possible to make a password on a computer that would protect the hard drive. In addition, as lawyers say, any data encryption or blocking is a serious aggravating circumstance – you are immediately under suspicion of committing some kind of illegal actions. What entails arrest and the possible application of measures of influence that reveals any passwords. It seems to me that it is precisely the openness of our events that has helped us to hold out for so long. There are about a terabyte of information on my computer – these are mostly films and documentation of all kinds of events that are in the public domain. There is nothing that could be regarded as some kind of extremist activity. Yes, there are also many financial documents, but this applies more to my situation than to other people. Yes, we worked openly with Western funds, institutions and partners, but there was not a single undesirable organization among them. So I really hope that what they profited from will not lead to serious consequences.

– How are you related to the “Party of the Dead”?

Dmitry Vilensky: “The Party of the Dead” is an art project initiated by Max Evstropov. To call it a party, as the investigation does, is naive. This is a performative artistic expression. The “Party of the Dead” did several exhibitions, performances at our site in the Palace of Culture, Max Evstropov taught at our school, and we are close colleagues. I have written many articles about the “Party of the Dead”, which, in my opinion, is one of the most striking art-activist statements in recent times. Max Evstropov hit the nerve of this necropolitics, necro-empire, necro-capitalism in the Russian version. In my opinion, this is a very bright and strong phenomenon. We are all proud that we supported him, this is what we told the investigator in plain text. We said that this is a wonderful thinker and artist – a person worthy in all respects.

Action group “What to do?” “Praise to Dialectics”, 2006

– You gave a lecture in Berlin about what happened in the art community during the six months of the war. Tell us, please.

During the war, disgusting dehumanization occurs, people lose important human qualities

Dmitry Vilensky: Since the beginning of the war, many really strong statements have been made. But we do not know which of them we can enumerate so as not to harm our comrades. Therefore, we can say about Sasha Skochilenko – she is now under investigation and she needs support. Her sticker campaign, when she pasted tiny anti-war slogans on groceries in supermarkets, was so praised by the authorities that she has not been released from prison for several months.

Many worthy remarks were made. But the pressure is very big. The criminalization of all artistic expressions did not begin on February 24 and not with the adoption of new laws on fakes, it has been going on since 2012 and is very tough. Therefore, the community is very vulnerable, people are seriously psychologically traumatized.

Olga Tsaplya: During the war, a monstrous, disgusting dehumanization takes place, people lose important human qualities. And in the House of Culture of Roses, in our commune, which was all summer long, we were trying to cultivate a new type of human relations, which are based precisely on increased humanity, partly even tenderness, vulnerability, fragility. For us, the question was how this tenderness can be transformed into strength, how people try to insist on their right to be human.

group “What to do?”

– Soon there will be an anniversary of the group “What to do?”. Please tell us about its evolution.

Decolonization issues now come to the fore

Dmitry Vilensky: Yes, it will be 20 years next year. The group was formed from the very beginning in a broad international context of the new left, which is not Stalinist, not conservative, not orthodox, but in sync with the whole palette of new left movements that Toni Negri wrote about, and different understandings of art, its genealogy as a project of universal equality, social justice. The escalation of the war led to a serious rethinking of what internationalism, solidarity, and opposition to new forms of fascism are. We found ourselves in a very complex symbolic rethinking, a kind of collapse. Of course, there are questions that have set the teeth on edge: what is Russian culture, why should it be abolished – a culture that represents imperial power or, on the contrary, is always crushed by this power and fights? In my opinion, this is exactly the culture for which we are ready to fight even now. The problems of decolonization have now come to the fore. In Russia, the question of culture and its role in society is too overestimated and put from a false position. It is very important to develop it from the other side, which is what we are trying to do.

Olga Tsaplya: We lived as a family, and now a part of our group has remained in St. Petersburg, and we cannot see each other.

– Yes, Europe closes its doors to the Russians. There are strong arguments both for and against. What do you say?

Olga Tsaplya: For people of our circle, this is simply terrible.

Who will now help those young people whom we had to abandon in Russia?

Dmitry Vilensky: You correctly said that there are legitimate arguments both for and against. The wave of tourists, the middle class who travels to Europe for shopping, of course, causes appropriate irritation. On the other hand, tourist visas were an opportunity for many people to continue their professional activities, because work visas were difficult to obtain, everyone worked on tourist visas. And when there were signals from the authorities that they were starting to deal with you, a tourist visa made it possible to quickly get out of this situation.

Some of the dreams are told before the war, and some after it began

Olga Tsaplya: These visas made it possible to live in Russia. Should someone stay there? Who will help now those young people whom we had to abandon in Russia? And not young? And the old people?

Dmitry Vilensky: To think that such measures stimulate a military uprising in Russia against Putin is a big illusion.

Cover of the zine of the summer art commune near St. Petersburg

– On the contrary, it is a punishment for not rebelling against Putin.

Dmitry Vilensky: Put in a corner? Well, yes. We made a zine this summer, it just came out. The title contains a quote from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: “We must live in our own world until they change their philosophy. ” He demanded that all Russians be deported. We took this phrase very personally and very seriously: “we must live in our own world.” What does it mean in your world? What is our world like? Why is it all called the “Russian world”, although we all have different ethnic origins? “Change your philosophy.” What does it mean to change your philosophy? We always had a philosophy, like Mandelstam’s: “I was only childishly connected with the world of sovereignty, I was afraid of oysters and looked at the guardsmen frowningly.” Here is our world.

– And shortly before the zine, you made the film Canary Archives. What is this canary?

“Canary Archives”

Olga Tsaplya: When the miners descended into the mine, they took a bird with them. If a gas came in that has neither smell nor color, the canaries sang, then fell silent, began to dance and fell dead. We started doing this work during covid. The time was alarming, it became clear that the clouds were gathering, we were all full of terrible forebodings and decided: let’s make a film about the canary that lives in the soul of each of us. At some point, it became clear that it is best to catch this canary on the verge between dream and reality. And we decided that each of us would tell his dream, through a dream we would see this same canary. The film consists of several parts. One part is the most important – where all nine members of the group in bed tell their dreams, or what can be called dreams. On the other screen, there are nine canaries in a cage, their number decreases with each dream. As a result, not a single canary remains. On another screen, vertical, we ourselves are in canary suits, yellowish plaids are so stupid. Miner’s lanterns are burning on our foreheads, that is, we are either birds or miners. We Dance. Another screen where the shaft goes down. And all these four screens are placed in a cage. We started filming this work before the war started and finished on March 5th. Therefore, it turned out that some of the dreams were told before the war, and some after it began. This is how each chapter begins with us: 5 days before the war, a week after the start of the war, and so on. If we were offered to shoot now, we would hardly have succeeded. But at that moment we were already well prepared, and I think that the statement was formed.

– At one time you protested against the presentation of the Kandinsky Prize to Belyaev-Gintovt. The ideology proposed by Gintovt has now become a leader, but there is no feeling that the authorities are completely supportive of it. The exhibition of Bruskin is closed, but Gintovt is not opened instead. How do you see the intentions of the authorities in the art world?

The quality of the stupefaction is simply incredible

Olga Tsaplya : It is very interesting what the authorities will offer us as contemporary art. It is not yet very clear. But it is clear that the ideological machine works effectively – the quality of the brainwashing is simply incredible, because they work with emotions, make gestures to confuse everyone, and all this goes straight into the soul of a normal person.

Dmitry Vilensky: We really didn’t expect a propaganda effect from television, which mixed the codes of cold and hot media. It has ceased to be a cold (according to McLuhan) media, a TV set with a more or less balanced picture, but has become just a Facebook srach for the entire TV screen world. This mixture of hot and cold with an audience of millions turned out to be a know-how that really took off. But all these scumbags from the world of propaganda know very well what is really going on. Now, with the defeat during the Ukrainian counter-offensive, I really hope that the propaganda machine will crumble. And contemporary art has always been the most marginal activity in microcommunities, in fact, it’s probably not even worth talking about it.

– How do you feel in Berlin? Did you feel like full-fledged emigrants and what are you doing now?

What was real a week ago becomes unreal

Dmitry Vilensky: I have been a German resident since 1997. It was my ethical and political choice: I decided that I needed to be in Russia while maintaining a very wide international activity. Therefore, in Berlin we are half at home, we spend a lot of time here, we have a gallery here, many friends. We earn money only in the West, but we spend it on the development of an alternative culture in Russia. Now we are looking around, continuing what we started, doing a big project with the Swedes “School of Emergency Situations”. But it has become very difficult to bring people from Russia to our programs in Europe. The Baltics are closed, tickets through Turkey cost astronomical money. How to deal with this new situation, I still do not understand. What was real a week ago is becoming unreal. We have been preparing a huge project in Narva for 8 months to resist the Russian propaganda that Olga was talking about. When everything was ready for us, the Estonian Ministry of Culture issued an order that people with Russian citizenship were not allowed to do anything in Estonia, either in the field of sports or in the field of culture.

Take a look at the best luxury hotels in Playa de las Americas.

See All Playa de las Americas Hotels

1

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

One of the most luxurious hotels in the Canary Islands, Hotel Las Madrigueras Golf Resort & Spa is a 57-room adult-only golf hotel on the border of Golf Las Americas. Manicured grounds and tropical foliage surround its Spanish-Colonial-inspired buildings, and a hushed atmosphere permeates inside and out. Spacious rooms and suites are regal and refined, with traditional decor such as hardwood floors and rich area rugs, plus conveniences like minibars, pillow menus, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi. Las Madrigueras’ two restaurants offer outdoor seating, but note that terrace reservations go quickly. The hotel’s heated pool, quiet spa and fitness center, and lush courtyard are peaceful, but the entire daytime atmosphere feels somewhat desolate, as most guests are out on the course. At night, a billiards room and piano bar provide some liveliness.

2

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

Hotel Sir Anthony is a boutique resort that’s part of a larger complex shared with two rowdier — and less chichi — resorts. The 70 rooms and suites are unabashedly elegant, with high-end amenities (minibars even have full-sized bottles of top-shelf liquor), sleek bathrooms, and sea-facing balconies. Its location next to the beach in the heart of Playa de las Americas is among its most attractive selling points, although the lovely outdoor pool surrounded by grass and palm trees is not too shabby either. A great restaurant serving locally sourced fare and a spa with ample treatments are also available, but no fitness center directly on-site. Travelers who like the location but want to save some cash may prefer the more affordable Cleopatra Palace or Mediterranean Palace, both of which are part of the same larger resort complex.

3

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

Tigotan Lovers & Friends is an upscale adult-only hotel with stellar facilities and 416 lovely rooms and suites, some of which were upgraded in 2016. All rooms have balconies and those that look out over the pool have particularly stellar views (particularly from the top floor), but the industrial views from the back of the building leave plenty to be desired. The main hub of activity at this property is at the main pool on the ground floor, which offers over 400 lounge chairs, a pool bar with an entertainment stage, and three hot tubs, the largest of which seats 16 people. There are two more infinity pools on the rooftop (and nude sunbathing) along with the hotel’s own branch of Ibiza’s iconic Cafe del Mar. Half-board and “exclusive” dining packages are available. Unfortunately, it’s a 10-minute walk to the nearest beach, so travelers wanting to be right on the shore may want to consider the sea-facing Europe Villa Cortes instead.

4

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

The upscale, beachfront h20 Las Palmeras was one of the first hotels in the area, but thanks to a 2015 renovation, it’s also one of the freshest, with a bright, retro-modern look that is a major deviation from what is commonly found at Playa de las Americas hotels. But there’s substance as well as style. In addition to trendy decor, the 519 rooms have mini-fridges, air-conditioning, flat-screen LED TVs, and balconies or terraces — many with ocean views. Plus, Las Palmeras has so many features (three pools, five eateries, three bars, an exhaustive entertainment program…), you’d think it was in the middle of nowhere, not in the smack-dab center of town on a prime beachfront piece of land. Travelers looking for less of a big-resort experience could check out Aparthotel El Duque, a scaled-down all-inclusive that’s a short walk from Costa Adeje’s best beach.

5

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

h20 Conquistador’s monstrous concrete exterior commands the coastline, but the 485-room upscale resort makes up for its unsightly bulk with a surprisingly fresh and contemporary interior design, warmhearted service, and a considerable set of features. Three pools, a gorgeous spa, seemingly endless buffet, and three distinct a la carte restaurants are standouts among the substantial offerings, not to mention direct beach access. Rooms are a squeeze, but come with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and balconies, many overlooking the ocean. In all, the property has across-the-board appeal for all sorts of guests — families, couples, even the rare business traveler — but those looking for a quieter vibe (and the same killer location) could check out Parque Santiago IV.

6

Playa de las Americas, Arona, Tenerife

The 191-room Sunprime Coral Suites and Spa is an upscale, adult-only hotel with vibrant and modern decor. Contemporary and colorful guests rooms are outfitted with free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and well-equipped kitchenettes, as well as furnished balconies. Note that some previous guests have complained of noise, particularly in road-facing and lower-level rooms. The hotel’s central location puts guests within an eight-minute walk of the famed Playa de la Americas, as well as near restaurants and bars. An array of on-site features include a large outdoor pool, expansive spa, gym, and well-reviewed restaurant with all-inclusive options. Visitors traveling with children under the age of 16 might enjoy the four-pearl, beachfront h20 Costa Adeje Palace.

Visual representation of the elections in St.

Petersburg – the magic of cheating votes / Sudo Null IT News

Hello!

In September of this (2019) year, the elections of the Governor of St. Petersburg were held. All voting data is in the public domain on the site of the election commission, we will not break anything, but simply visualize the information from this site www.st-petersburg.vybory.izbirkom.ru in the form we need, conduct a very simple analysis and determine some “magic” rules.

I usually use Google Colab for these kinds of tasks. This is a service that allows you to run Jupyter Notebooks, having access to the GPU (NVidia Tesla K80) for free, this will significantly speed up data parsing and further processing. I needed some prep work before importing.

 %%time

!apt upgrade
!apt install gdal-bin python-gdal python3-gdal
# Install rtree - Geopandas requirement
!apt install python3-rtree
# Install Geopandas
!pip install git+git://github.com/geopandas/geopandas. git
# Install descartes - Geopandas requirment
!pip install descartes

Next are the imports.

 import requests
from bs4 import BeautifulSoup
import numpy as np
import pandas as pd
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import geopandas as gpd
import xlrd

Description of libraries used

  • requests — module for requesting connection to the site

  • BeautifulSoup – module for parsing html and xml documents; allows you to access directly the content of any tags in html

  • numpy – math module with basic and necessary set of math functions

  • pandas data analysis library

  • matplotlib.pyplot – module-set of plotting methods

  • geopandas – module for building an election map

  • xlrd table file reader

The time has come to collect the data itself, parsim. The Electoral Committee took care of our time and provided reporting in tables, which is convenient.

So, that’s what was discussed. Data in Google Colab is collected quickly, but there is not so much of it.

Before building various graphs and maps, it is good for us to have an idea of what we call a “dataset”.

Analysis of election commission data

There are 30 territorial commissions in the city of St. Petersburg; in the 31st column we include digital polling stations.

Each territorial commission has several dozen PECs (precinct election commissions).

The main thing that interests us is the turnout at each polling station, and what dependencies we can observe. I will start from the following:

  • dependence of turnout and the number of polling stations;

  • dependence of the percentage of votes for candidates on turnout;

  • dependence of turnout on the number of voters in the polling station.

From the table of bare data, it is quite difficult to trace how the elections went and draw any conclusions, so the graphs are our way out.

Let’s build what we came up with.

 ### Plot Data
#Votes in percent (appearence) - no need in extra computations
#Appearence (num of voters) - no need in extera computations
#Number of UIKs (appearance)
interval = 1
interval_num_of_UIKs = []
for i in range(int(100/interval+1/interval)):
    interval_num_of_UIKs.append(0)
for i in range (0, int(100/interval+1/interval), interval):
    for j in range(len(appearance)):
        if appearence[j] < (i + interval/2) and appearence[j] >= (i - interval/2):
            interval_num_of_UIKs[i] = interval_num_of_UIKs[i] + 1
 ### Plotting
#Number of UIKs (appearance)
plt.figure(figsize=(10, 6))
plt.plot(interval_num_of_UIKs)
plt.axis([0, 100, 0, 200])
plt.ylabel('Number of UIKs in a 1% range')
plt.xlabel('Appearance')
plt.show()
#Votes in percent (appearance)
plt. figure(figsize=(10, 10))
plt.scatter(appearence, votes_for_Amosov_percent, c = 'g', s = 6)
plt.scatter(appearence, votes_for_Beglov_percent, c = 'b', s = 6)
plt.scatter(appearence, votes_for_Tikhonova_percent, c = 'r', s = 6)
plt.ylabel('Votes in % for each candidate')
plt.xlabel('Appearance')
plt.show()
#Appearance (num of voters)
plt.figure(figsize=(10, 6))
plt.scatter(num_of_voters, appearence, c = 'y', s = 6)
plt.ylabel('Appearance')
plt.xlabel('Number of voters registereg in UIK')
plt.show()

Dependence of turnout and number of polling stations

Dependence of the percentage of votes for candidates on turnout

  • “green” – votes for Amosov

  • “blue” – for Beglov

  • “red” – for Tikhonova

Dependence of turnout on the number of voters at the polling station

The buildings are quite tolerable, but in the course of the work it turned out that on average there are 400 people at the polling station and the percentage for Beglov is from 50 to 70, but there are two polling stations with a turnout of >1200 people and percent 90+-0. 2. It is interesting that this happened in these areas. Did some fantastic agitators work? Or just brought 10 buses of people and forced to vote? Anyway, we’re excited that a little bit of this kind of investigation is coming along. But we still have to draw maps. Let’s continue.

Visualization and working with geopandas
