Fog trail among plant Treasures of Tenerife

The path that connects Cruz del Carmen and Punta del Hidalgo consists of three sections, where the traveler will get acquainted with the different types of vegetation of the Anaga Rural Park, located in the northern part of the island of Tenerife. On the first leg of the journey, from Cruz del Carmen to Las Carboneras, you will see laurel forests, then small farmlands begin and continue to the Chinamada area. The last section of the route is a descent to the coast of Punta del Hidalgo, dominated by bushes.

Path leading from the mountain top to the beach

Ten kilometers long, with a maximum level difference of 916 meters, this route is of medium difficulty and is a combination of a trail, forest paths and several sections of the trail. Its passage will take about four hours. Don’t forget the equipment and comfortable shoes you need to get down to the coast. Also bring food and drink with you. If you have a camera with you, you can take amazing pictures of the landscapes of the La Laguna valley, and at the Aguaide lookout you will see panoramic views of the coast of Anaga.

A large clearing, which now houses parking and various infrastructure facilities, is located at the intersection of many roads. Previously, there was a cross dedicated to Our Lady of Carmel, the patroness of travelers. At the end of the 19th century, a local forester decided to reward anyone who brought a stone here with a bundle of firewood. Thus, material was collected for the construction of a chapel at the Cruz del Carmen crossroads.

Before starting the descent, it is worth going to the observation deck, which offers one of the best views of the La Laguna valley.

After the pass with stairs, one of the most difficult sections of the route begins, very steep, but, fortunately, very short.

This settlement in the middle of the road is a vivid example of cave dwellings preserved in Anaga. Most of them are dug in tuff, because there was not enough flat land for agriculture and people had to huddle along the edges so as not to occupy a single meter of fertile soil. Most dwellings are concentrated around the rock.

Before continuing the descent, you can go to the viewpoint of Aguaide with an impressive view of Punta del Hidalgo and the entire northern coast of Anaga.

A little further along the path in the middle of the gorge, you can see a majestic rock, which is the mouth of a volcano made of phonolitic lava, which is distinguished by a light shade. This is the cliff of Los Pinos, on which you can see a grove of Canarian pine, unique in that this tree usually grows above the level on which the park is located. On this rock, there is also a plant endemic to the park – rockrose (Cistus chinamadensis) .

This magnificent rock is the symbol of Punta del Hidalgo. Its name (“Two brothers”) is associated with the legend of the indigenous people, the Guanches. Two young brothers, who had forbidden love for each other, climbed a rock under the cover of night and threw themselves from it into the abyss. From grief and pain, the mountain split in two with a groan.

Cruz del Carmen – Punta del Hidalgo, Tenerife

The buildings on the side of the gorge belong to the La Fajana well, the water of which was used to irrigate the agricultural land of Punta del Hidalgo. The main building contains old equipment of high value, but now it can not be seen. The well is actually a water tunnel that leads inside the gorge, collecting fresh water and preventing salt water from the ocean from entering.

The route ends at the tourist information center on the observation deck overlooking the coast and the Anaga massif, from which we descended. A monument to one of the greatest representatives of Canarian folk music, Sebastian Ramos, nicknamed El Puntero, testifies to the fact that this city is the cradle of the folklore tradition.

If you continue towards the sea, you can swim in the natural pools of the coast and see one of the most interesting seaside landscapes of the island. There is also a bus stop at the end of the route.

    World Cruising Club

The ARC is a ‘must do’ for many sailors, and attracts over 200 boats and 1200 people every year to sail 2700 NM across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia.

The ARC is for everyone; families with children, tough racers, cruising couples, big boats and modest boats. Crossing the Atlantic together, but having their own adventures. More than just a boat race, the ARC is about friendships made ashore in the two weeks of pre-departure activities continued over the radio net at sea. It’s about arriving in Saint Lucia to be met on the dock with a rum punch and a chilled beer, knowing you have achieved something fantastic – crossing an ocean on a small sailboat.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank you and your team for a great event, and most probably one of the best experiences of my life” Max Klink, yacht Caro (GER)

ARC Weatherman Chris Tibbs has forecast a classic trade wind passage for ARC 2022, but with a lively start, as a lingering cold front ‘heats-up’ the wind accelerations zones off Gran Canaria. His advice to cruisers setting off tomorrow, Sunday 20 November, was to sail conservatively on the first night and head south of the rhumb line course, following the classic ‘south until the butter melts’. .. TESTIMONIALS

Thank you all for your fantastic and enthusiastic support and work to make this a wonderful ARC for us and all participating yachts. Once again we thank you all, we had a wonderful time.

    Gijs & Femke, King’s Legend ARC 2014

I have to admit that I was a little cynical and wary about whether I wanted to be organised into a rally environment before signing up but I am now a convert – and indeed should anyone enquire I will be an advocate for both this event and your organisation

The level of support was just pitched perfectly and the quiet way that the team organised both us and the overall group was superbly efficient but without fuss and over complication. The camaraderie of the participants was fantastic and added a rich element to our first transatlantic experience.

It’s hard to miss the pitter-patter of feet at the ARC socials. As the adults enjoy a drink or two at the sundowners and parties, there are always a club of smaller sailors grouped together with wide smiles and a game of tag soon ensues. Children in the ARC are a great enhancement to the atmosphere, with a special family boat programme to enjoy to get to know fellow cruisers with kids…. more info

37th Atlantic Rally for Cruisers Sets Sail

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    Sunday 20 November 2022
It was an exciting start to the 37th edition of the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) today, Sunday 20 November, from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, as a north easterly swell gave the boats a rolling send off. In total, 138 of the 143 strong fleet took the start for the 2,700nm sail to Saint Lucia, with a long-range forecast promising good tradewinds to whisk them to the Caribbean. Over 800 crew are taking part in ARC 2022 on board a diverse fleet of cruising yachts with monohulls, multihulls and a motorboat leaving Gran Canaria today.

Hosts of the start since the first ARC in 1986, Las Palmas Marina has come alive with the annual event once again for the two-week rally pre-departure programme. Participants have enjoyed exploring Gran Canaria, and the city of Las Palmas has been excellent for provisioning and preparing for the crossing to Saint Lucia, which is expected to take 18-20 days for the average cruiser. Rally organisers World Cruising Club have carried out safety checks for each boat and organised a varied programme of seminars and social evenings in the lead up to the start, fuelling the rally camaraderie evident on each dock of the marina. “It’s been a really slick operation, all the aspects here in Las Palmas,” said Mark Lawrence, crew on board the Australian Dufour 56 Smooth Operator. “The services and facilities have been really good, from the riggers to the provisioners, and it just takes so much stress out of the preparations having all this support. Now we feel, ‘let’s get going’! We can’t wait for some great trade wind sailing to the Caribbean!”

There was an emotional farewell atmosphere as Las Palmas Marina gradually emptied leaving bare pontoons for another year. The Tourist Board of Gran Canaria, the Port Authority of Las Palmas and the Ayuntamiento of Las Palmas, have been wonderful hosts to ARC participants for the past two weeks, and crews said goodbye to the city with waves and cheers as the yachts processioned out of the marina.

Over the past 48 hours in Gran Canaria, as crews made their final preparations for the start of their Atlantic crossing, strong gusting winds from the NE have built up a significant 1.5m swell; ideal for surfers, but causing some discomfort for boats on the start line today. The wind was more easterly than is typical for an ARC start, meaning it was a white sail reaching start in the 18-20 knot winds. The weather forecast for the next 24 hours shows winds around 20 knots, with higher gusts in the acceleration zone to the south of Gran Canaria. The acceleration zone extends 100NM down from the Island, where its 2000m high mountain causes significant increases in wind strengths south of the island. Skippers will need to take precautions, reefing early and navigating a more southerly route away from the strongest winds during the first 24 hours. With daylight tomorrow, they fleet should be moving into more settled trade winds, especially to the south of the rhumb line, a pattern expected to hold for at least the first week of the crossing.

With the committee vessel, the Armada española (Spanish Navy) ship Meteoro on station, the first start was for the Multihull and Open Divisions, just as the sun emerged following a cloudy morning. Despite carrying a reef or two, the performance catamarans streamed over the start making 5-6kts, led by all-electric ITA Catamaran 14.99 Nanomole (MLT) skippered by Ulrik Bjerl Nielsen from Denmark.

Up next, a smaller than usual ARC Racing fleet battled the swell on the inshore line and it was a safe and steady start with many days of ocean sailing ahead. Harmony 52 Sao Jorge (GBR) edged out a lead to cross the line first, followed by Beneteau First 53 Firstlady (DEU), and the smaller Beneteau 40.7 Escapado (GBR) following in third. Sao Jorge and Escapado are both charter boats from the British based Sail Racing Academy, carrying guest crews with a professional skipper and mate onboard.

It was a spectacular sight as white sails of over 100 yachts in the Cruising Division peppered the blue horizon of the harbour of Las Palmas at 13:00. Anthony Auger’s Oyster 665 Patience of London (GBR) was at the front of the fleet, with the steady winds already propelling them towards Saint Lucia.

As the fleet leave Gran Canaria in their wake, a classic trade wind sail is forecast as the boats head south before they turn to point theirs bows to IGY Rodney Bay Marina. From the youngest crew, aged just two years old, to the oldest skipper at over 80, the ARC sailors coming from 35 different nations will soon adapt to life on the ocean waves after a rush of pre-departure preparations. All ARC boats are fitted with YB Tracking satellite trackers, allowing family and friends to follow the fleet from the comfort of home via the ARC website or YB Races App.

The departure of the ARC fleet sailing directly to Saint Lucia today means a combined total of 234 yachts are crossing the Atlantic under the ARC banner in November 2022. The ARC+ fleet of 91 yachts departed Mindelo, Cape Verde for their second leg of their crossing last Friday, bound for Camper and Nicholson’s Port Louis Marina in Grenada. A further 43 yachts will join the second edition of ARC January, setting sail in the new year, in a third Atlantic crossing rally organised by World Cruising Club, sailing from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia.

MM Grand Hotel Puebla, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

    4.5/5Excellent101 Reviews

1.72km from Zoo Parque Loro Puebla

Very good impression of this hotel, cost-effective, better and cheaper than Mexico City Airport. Well, the airport is for connecting flights. There is a bus from Mexico City Airport to Puebla. It takes ten minutes to get off the bus and take a taxi to the hotel. The traffic is very convenient. The breakfast is local, but the scrambled eggs and broccoli are very suitable for the Chinese stomach. Hahaha The fruit is very fresh. The room we booked does not include breakfast. We paid for the card in the morning. The waiters are very good, but not much English, but the basic communication is still no problem

    Hotel Misión Puebla Angelopolis

    4.1/5Very Good100 Reviews

2.66km from Zoo Parque Loro Puebla

I visit Puebla every year and I like to try different hotels. This time I choose Misión Angelópolis. Now, I regret that. The Hotel by itself is very basic, but that wasn’t the problem. The room is small and badly distributed – the bathroom is as big as the bedroom. The first night I washed my hands and the hand towel was dirty and with stains. I complained about it next day and they told me they will check it out. They never left another hand towel because they did not have any more! I stayed for 5 nights. Only the first day they left amenities and water after that we had to ask at reception for more! On the 4th night I was planning to leave my room around 1 pm and they kept knocking to clean the room. I mentioned I was going to leave at 1 pm they went three times asking if they could clean the room until I had to put a do not disturb sign. The last night they never even cleaned the room even though I put the ”Please clean the room” sign. Summarizing the food was meh, terrible cleaning service, not very good location, basic room. The restrooms next to the restaurant very dirty and I forgot to mention very noisy, someone was singing around 8 am and people running on the hall I do not recommend this hotel and of course I would never come back.

Loro Park celebrated its 40th anniversary

The largest zoo in Spain “Loro Parque” was opened on December 17, 1972 by Wolfgang Kisling in the picturesque town of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island. Loro Parque, which means “parrot park” in Spanish, was originally conceived as a paradise for birds, but over time has become one of the most interesting zoos in Spain and the world.

The mild climate, the abundance of trees and plants have become an ideal environment for both parrots and other animals. The founder of the park himself became so attached to his “green” project that he settled directly in the very center of Loro Park.

Now the park has more than 350 species of parrots, including 20 species of cockatoos (with only 21 species distinguished in the world), as well as 4,000 birds. In addition to parrots, tigers, monkeys, meerkats, turtles, iguanas and other animals from different parts of the world live in Loro Park.

A special pride of the park is the world’s largest penguinarium. It recreates all the conditions of the real life of penguins, both in the cold and in the heat.

In the park you can see one of the most remarkable aquariums with moray eels, piranhas, clown fish, live corals and one of the longest shark tunnels in the world.

Loro Park is not only a zoo, but also an amusement park. So, several times a day you can watch shows of dolphins, fur seals, parrots and the visiting card of the park – a bright show of killer whales Orca Ocean. It is noteworthy that this is one of the few killer whale shows in the world, so it is definitely worth watching.

Especially for the anniversary, the park has prepared a new exhibition with an anteater and capybaras. Also new to the park are tours in different languages (including Russian) called Discovery Tour: Behind the scenes. Their highlight is that the guide will tell not only about the peculiarities of animal life, interesting and funny stories about incidents in the park, but also show places that are closed to tourists – so to speak, take you behind the scenes of the park. On such a tour, you can learn about how gorillas are kept, what they are fed, and see their unusual bedrooms. Go down under the aquarium, see the entire water filtration system, learn about the secrets of the park – in three hours you can look at the whole ins and outs of the park and make sure that the animals here live a full life and do not need anything.

One of the keys to the success of Loro Park is without a doubt the most comfortable conditions for keeping animals. Qualified personnel several times a day clean all cages and aquariums, feed and care for the inhabitants of the park. Since 1994, the Loro Parca charitable foundation, also organized by Wolfgang Kiesling, has been operating. The main objectives of the fund are to save animals on the verge of extinction and their habitats.

Loro Park differs from many parks in its large research and scientific center. Here they study the development of animals, their features of reproduction and behavior.

The park is open all year round from 8:30 am to 6:45 pm. A free train runs every 20 minutes between the park and Reyes Catolicos. Ticket price: standard ticket for adults – 33 euros, for children – 22; premium ticket (with “Discovery Tour: Behind the scenes” plus lunch) – 52 euros for adults, 34 euros for children. Detailed information on how to get to the park and the show schedule can be found on the official website of Loro Parca.

U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Morocco

The purpose of your intended travel and other facts will determine what type of visa is required under U.S. immigration law. As a visa applicant, you will need to establish that you meet all requirements to receive the category of visa for which you are applying.

See our Directory of Visa Categories on usvisas.state.gov to determine which visa category might be appropriate for your purpose of travel to the United States.

    Nonimmigrant Visas

    Immigrant Visas

    What is a Visa?

A citizen of a foreign country who seeks to enter the United States generally must first obtain a U.S. visa, which is placed in the traveler’s passport, a travel document issued by the traveler’s country of citizenship.

Certain international travelers may be eligible to travel to the United States without a visa if they meet the requirements for visa-free travel. The Visa section of this website is all about U. S. visas for foreign citizens to travel to the United States.

(Note: U.S. citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit.).

    Contact Us

For questions about the application process, including cancelling or rescheduling an appointment, or adding a family member to an appointment, contact the Call Center:

    • Be forthcoming about your purpose and plans.

    About The Holiday Village Tenerife

The Landmar Costa Los Gigantes (previously known as the TUI Holiday Village Tenerife and Be Live Costa Los Gigantes), is a family friendly, all inclusive resort in the Los Gigantes/Playa de la Arena area of Tenerife’s popular western coast. Set atop a hillside location between Playa de la Arena and Playa de Santiago beaches, the resort enjoys stunning views, with a whole host of facilities and activities on offer to keep the whole family entertained, including kids clubs (split into the HV Club and HV Crew), evening entertainment, as well as water slides, gym and much more. Plus ree WiFi is included throughout the hotel.

Whether it’s spending time in one of the six swimming pools, trying your hand at the high ropes, chilling out on a balinese bed, or enjoying delicious food at one of the hotel’s two restaurants, you’ll want to come back on holiday here time and time again.

Being an all inclusive hotel, you might not want to venture out, but if you do, there’s loads of places to see and enjoy, including exploring the area of Los Gigantes or heading to Costa Adeje and to Siam Park for some waterpark fun and the chance to try your hand at a scary water slide or two.

During the summer, between May and October, the hotel is sold as TUI’s Holiday Village brand, while during the winter months, between November and April, when the weather is a little cooler but still plenty of sunshine, it is now sold as Landmar Costa Los Gigantes, part of the Landmar Hotels chain. So you can book the all inclusive hotel with other holiday companies like On The Beach and Jet2 Holidays to Tenerife, as the Landmar Costa Los Gigantes. We’ve also summarised the latest reviews below to help you get a quick feel for comments made by holidaymakers who rate the hotel ‘very good’ according to Trip Advisor reviews.

    Latest holiday offers

Now known by it’s other name, the Landmar Costa Los Gigantes, the Holiday Village Tenerife can be booked as part of an all inclusive package holiday with TUI, or as hotel only in the winter through popular websites like Booking.com and Love Holidays. The best prices can be found by shopping around, but it’s worth considering that by booking your flight and hotel together with a brand that is ATOL or ABTA protected, you have much better financial security. HV Tenerife may also be included in several Free Child Places offers so make sure you check out what deals are on offer before booking.

Holiday prices can vary by the time of year. Booking early can lead to some discounts, while last minute deals may also provide you with a fantastic bargain.

    In-hotel facilities

The hotel offers all the facilities you’ll need while you’re on holiday. Here are just a few of the more popular ones:

    • Free WiFi

    • Six Swimming Pools

    • Television

    • Children’s Clubs

    • Air Conditioning

    • Gym

    • Bar

    • Entertainment

    • All Inclusive

As with all Holiday Village resorts, Tenerife offers plenty of facilities for the whole family including a kids club, from the little ones up to teenagers, and adults too. To start with, there are three outdoor swimming pools (a livelier activity pool, a water slide pool and a quiet pool with bali beds, which are salt water pools and we believe one of which is heated), as well as two splash pools for babies. There is also an indoor pool, which is part of the relaxing spa circuit and costs a little extra (payable locally), and is perfect for those cooler days when you need a warmer pool. The spa itself features a number of relaxing facilities, including hammam and Finnish sauna, whirlpool and hydrotherapy pool, and the gym is perfect for those who like to keep fit and active while on holiday. Beauty spa treatments can also be booked during your stay.

While the spa caters for grown ups, there is plenty to keep the kids busy, with a huge range of activities. The swim, stage and football academy are sure to help improve the children’s skills (the swim academy is a favourite), although this isn’t included in the all inclusive offer and is at an additional cost. There’s also a multi-sports court, games room with pool tables and arcade machines, mini-golf, and a fantastically fun high ropes aerial adventure course.

    Entertainment

From the in-resort creche to the endless activities that the fantastic entertainment team put on, there’s loads to enjoy and experience here.

As with all Holiday Villages, the kids clubs are split into two with a wide range of activities put on for them to enjoy and make new friends, whether that’s around the activity pool, in the clubs, or the games room. And when evening comes around, there’s live music, a mini-disco, plus six bars to enjoy, including one that is ideal for a sunset drink.

Day passes for the entertainment and use of facilities are not available for guests staying at other hotels.

    Food & Drink

Enjoy all inclusive and have all your meals and local drinks included in the cost of your holiday and premium drinks packages may be available for an additional charge. Food at the hotel is varied to cater for all tastes and dietary requirements. If you do need anything specific such as gluten free, speak to hotel staff when you arrive and in the restaurant who can advise accordingly.

There are two restaurants and a snack bar at the hotel so you definitely won’t go hungry:

    • Teide Y Chinyero – The main buffet restaurant where a mix of foods from around the world is served for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
    • Palapa – Palapa is the hotel’s A La Carte restaurant, offering Italian cuisine
    • Snack Barbacoa Trebolino – A snack bar open from 10am – 5pm for when you get hungry during the day.

Meal times at the buffet restaurant are from 7:30am – 10:30am for breakfast and 6:30pm – 9:30pm for dinner.

    Things to Do

Los Gigantes/Playa de la Arena is a small resort but there is still plenty of things to do near the resort. Make sure you take a wonder out and try some of the local bars and restaurants, as well as heading to the beach too. Or even venture down to Costa Adeje if you have a car to see more of Tenerife.

    Shops Nearby

There are a few shops near the Holiday Village in the main town of Playa Arena, such as pharmacies, clothing and beach shops, and supermarkets, as well as car hire places too. The hotel is all inclusive, but there is a large Mercadona supermarket just 5 minutes walk from the hotel.

    Beach

The nearest beach, Playa de la Arena, is about a 15 minute walk away and is one of the largest in the area. As with many of Tenerife’s beaches, Playa de la Arena, and nearby Playa de Santiago, are black sand beaches, both of which are close to a range of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars, and the all important ice cream parlour.

    Excursions

If booking your package holiday with TUI or First Choice, excursions aren’t included in the all-inclusive package but it may be possible to add pre-departure for an additional cost. If you’ve booked hotel only, or with another holiday company, you can organise excursions once you arrive at the hotel. There are plenty of excursions to enjoy in Tenerife, from a fun-filled day at Siam Park or a boat trip to go whale and dolphin watching, to a more cultural experience, trying local cuisine, or discovering one of Tenerife’s hidden gems. Simply speak to the in-resort reps when you arrive to organise.

20 Reasons to Book Holiday Village Tenerife with Kids (Review)

Last Updated on 1 June 2022 by Colette

This post features a hosted stay & affiliate links

Holiday Village Tenerife is part of the Be Live Hotel; Costa Los Gigantes, situated near Playa de la Arena – the quieter, calmer little sister of Playa de las Americas which is half an hour down the road.   Dave stayed in Playa de las Americas for a stag do last year and said it is like Blackpool – make of that what you will!

We actually saw very little of Playa de la Arena, only leaving our hotel for a day out at Siam Park (we booked a private taxi as we wanted to get there early but you can get a bus from the hotel).  This felt extremely lazy but in reality is testimony to how well looked after we were at Holiday Village Tenerife.  Usually we would have explored local beaches & markets but the time just slipped away from us.  I think if we’d been staying for another week we might have planned to explore more but we just really didn’t feel the need.  Dave described this as a “take your brain out” holiday – you just don’t need to think about anything. Your meals are organised, the kids are entertained, your bed is made. This is a far cry from the self catering holidays we would usually book and our heads have been well and truly turned – Dave actually started looking at booking our next Holiday Village break before we’d even got home!

    With that in mind, here’s

    1.

    Beautiful, spacious rooms

I don’t mind sharing a hotel room with the kids for a night or two but for a week or more you really need separate sleeping spaces!  At Hotel Costa Los Gigantes we were spoilt for space with a double room and a suite with an interconnecting door.  This meant that the kids had their own bathroom and balcony, Ben slept on a pull out bed in the living room and the girls had a twin bedroom whilst Dave and I had our own double room with its own bathroom and balcony.  Being able to put the kids to bed, shut the door and retire to our own room in peace was fantastic – especially as it meant we didn’t all have to go to bed at the same time (though in all honesty most nights we weren’t far behind the kids!).  The rooms at Holiday Village Tenerife were bright, clean and spacious and had everything we could have needed.

    2. Incredible views

Because Hotel Costa Los Giagnates is sat on a hill side, the views are amazing.  We had a beautiful sea view from our private balconies, but if I’m honest the view was gorgeous from just about anywhere both during the day and at sunset!  I think my favourite view was from the Balinese beds.

    3. Swimming pools

Holiday Village Tenerife has three pools as well as some super shallow pools for tiny tots – it’s worth mentioning that these are salt water pools rather than chlorine which we found took a little getting used to.  I found it made my eyes sting but the kids weren’t bothered at all!  The “Main Activity Pool” – better known by my children as “the party pool” was a bit of a culture shock when we first arrived – I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like it before.  It’s noisy and full of fun – there’s a fairly steady stream of entertainment going on, with a daily poolside quiz and a pool party every lunch time where you can join in with a string of Holiday Village dance routines (the HV Bounce, Live + Loud and Let’s Get Ridiculous were firm favourites and ones which Chloe is still making me play in the car on a regular basis!)  This pool was always busy and the kids absolutely loved it.  Tucked away in a corner was a single slide, it wasn’t the biggest and best slide I’ve ever seen but the kids enjoyed it, though to be honest we only went right down there a few times, they were so well entertained in the pools themselves that they weren’t that bothered by the slide pool – and that’s saying something for my three!  At the opposite end of the hotel site was another, smaller pool which the kids referred to as the “Y pool” – this was much quieter in that there was no music or entertainment and no inflatables or balls allowed.   We found ourselves mixing it up and spending time at both pools during the course of the day which really seemed to suit us all.

    4. Kids’ clubs at Holiday Village Tenerife

Kids’ Clubs were a new experience for us – and one we were looking forward to!  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to take my kids on holiday and then not see them all day but knowing that for a couple of hours at a time, they could be entertained at an age appropriate level in professionally run Kids’ Clubs whilst Dave and I took the chance to relax really took our holiday to a different level.  Don’t for one second think we were pushing the kids into clubs so we could have time to ourselves either, Amy was choosing to go to Kids’ Clubs up to three times a day even over a bit of Mummy and Amy time!  That was me told!  Dave had the Kids’ Club timetable on his phone so we could just sit and look through the options and let the kids pick out what they fancied.  The Kids’ Clubs are organised by age group which meant Amy was in the youngest group and the big two were in the next group up together.   I had worried that Amy might be bothered that she was on her own but she honestly couldn’t have cared less.  Ben was only two weeks off moving up to the next age group which was a bit of a shame as I think it would have been quite nice to separate them all and give them a break from one another!

    5. Evening entertainment

Although there was a full programme of evening entertainment including live music in the bar, we found ourselves at the Holiday Village outdoor stage almost every single night.  The kids absolutely loved it – from the nightly Live + Loud show (which was basically like watching Saturday morning television on stage), to a pantomime or pop show – they were thoroughly entertained from about 6pm through to 10pm every night – we were hard pushed to get them away for tea some nights!  The entertainments team really did give 100% at all times – and we have to give a special mention to Aron, I’m fairly sure this guy is made of springs he has so much bounce and energy!

    6.

    Balinese beds

There are nine private Balinese beds with stunning sea views which can be pre-booked (at a cost of around 30 euros) and accessed with a key.  They are set behind privacy glass panels to the side of one of the swimming pools, which means you can hear a gentle buzz of activity in the background but not so that it disturbs you, in fact Dave said it he quite liked it as it made him feel quite separate from everything.  A platter of fresh fruit and a bottle of cava is delivered to your bed each lunchtime – just to add to the feeling of decadence.  Although families are welcome to use the Balinese beds, Dave and I preferred to go there on our own whilst the kids were in clubs and enjoy the opportunity to sunbathe in peace or read a book.  We did take our team to the beds one morning but found we spent more time worrying about them disturbing other people than we did enjoying the experience!

    7. Gym

Now it will come as no surprise to you to know that I didn’t go anywhere near the gym . . . however, Dave was in training for #RideLondon and I think we all know that an all inclusive holiday in the sun is rarely the best training for a 100 mile bike ride!  He hit the gym a couple of times while Ben was at Football Academy, and whilst he said he struggled for the lack of air conditioning, the view was amazing.  It certainly served his purpose of getting a few miles under his belt.

    8. Spa

Although we had free access to the Spa, I chose not to use it.  I love a good spa day but it just didn’t feel like something I wanted to do when I could lie on a Balinese bed in peace and read – I guess I just didn’t feel the need to escape and, when I was already super warm, the idea of a steam room wasn’t so appealing!  We did visit the spa to get washed up ahead of leaving and I must admit at that point I regretted not popping in sooner!

    9. Awesome Reps

Every single member of Holiday Village Tenerife staff we came into contact with was friendly, enthusiastic and ready to help with anything we needed but at no point did we feel pressured to sign up to anything or join in with things if we didn’t want to.   From the lovely girls who met us at 2am after a slightly stressful transfer (which involved our taxi driver accidentally dropping us off at the wrong hotel!), to the Kids’ Club staff or the gang dancing energetically at the pool side every day – these guys are loving their jobs and their banter and enthusiasm is infectious.

    10. Food

You really won’t go hungry at Holiday Village Tenerife, there’s lots of options of places to eat around the site with several restaurants open at different times of the day serving a wide variety of buffet options, a daily BBQ and an à la carte restaurant which you are welcome to dine at once per week.  Initially we found the buffet a little overwhelming, if you arrive at a restaurant at peak time it can be trickier to find a table for a family of five and guiding three children through the buffet options when it’s busy really isn’t fun – in fact I nicknamed in the Buffet Bum Shuffle! However, we soon figured out when the quieter times were to go and found it much easier to sort the children out first then once they were settled Dave and I would go back to choose our own meals.   When it was quiet Ben and Chloe were able to go and serve themselves fairly independently.

The buffets offered up a huge choice of familiar foods (yes all the chips, pasta, roast chicken, a full English breakfast) as well as more adventurous local dishes or themed evenings, a children’s area (though they are more than welcome to choose from the main buffet), healthier options and plenty of fruit and veg.  We particularly liked the freshly cooked options each day which were served at a counter – Dave enjoyed an omelette made to order most mornings for breakfast.  As I have mentioned, the all-inclusive package includes one à la carte meal per week – this is something you need to pre-book and I recommend doing this fairly early on in your stay as it quickly books up.  There are two menus available and these alternate – so if you are staying for two weeks you might want to try and time your à la carte visits so you get to try both menus, particularly as the menus are limited to a few choices for each course.   To enable us to review this option fully we were invited to eat at the à la carte restaurant several times which meant we tried out both menus during our week’s stay.  For Dave and I, we found it felt like a real treat to sit down, choose our meal from a menu and have it brought to us after a few days of negotiating the buffet!  The children’s menu in the à la carte restaurant is very limited so our three much preferred the choice of the buffet restaurant.  With hindsight it would have worked well to feed the kids at the buffet first then have our à la carte meal in peace while they were at a Kids’ Club!

    11. Drink

You certainly won’t go thirsty at Holiday Village Tenerife either!  There’s plenty of options for keeping your glass (or coffee cup) topped up throughout the day.  Both the main activity pool and the quieter pool have bars serving a range of soft drinks and slush as well as beer, wine and sangria on tap which you can help yourself to.  The bar area in the main hotel building, which has both indoor and outdoor seating, is open all day with machines to serve yourself hot drinks, milkshake and soft drinks as well as all the usual alcoholic suspects served at the bar. In addition, there’s a bar at the Holiday Village stage on an evening.  I think the kids and I were probably about 50% slush at all times – I actually drank very little during our holiday but Dave definitely enjoyed a beer or two with his meals and in the evenings.  In addition to the standard all-inclusive drinks available, there is an optional drinks package charged at 10 euros per person, per day, which includes premium branded drinks.

    12. Lots of comfortable sun beds

Row upon row of sunbeds flank the pools at both ends of the hotel but, as I’m sure you can imagine, these get taken up very quickly.  Whilst you’re not strictly allowed to save your sunbeds, people absolutely were, which we found frustrating and tried not to get involved with!  If you want a bed right next to the poolside so you can keep an eye on the kids, you’re going to have to get there first thing.  We soon discovered that if you hadn’t made it to the main activity pool by mid morning you weren’t going to be lying anywhere whereas the quieter pool at the other end of the site often had beds available.   The sunbeds were comfortable and most had a parasol for some necessary shade.  We didn’t really spend all that much time on them preferring the peace of the Balinese beds if the kids were in Kid’s Clubs for any length of time or more often we just tended to be in the pool with them or at least sat at the side.

    13. Towels are provided

There’s no need to take your own beach towels on holiday with you, these are provided by the hotel.  You are given a token which allows you to change them on a daily basis for fresh ones.

    14. Onsite shops

There are a number of onsite shops.  The first selling gifts and clothing – we picked up some new flip flops for Chloe after realising her Crocs were too small.  The second shop was all about the sweets and chocolate – miraculously we managed not to set foot inside it all week! And the third and final shop stocked more practical items like sun cream and shampoo as well as inflatables for the pool.  Of course you do pay a premium for the convenience of buying these things on site, I paid over 6 euros for a box of tampons.

    15. Splash park

The onsite splash park, whilst small, was a whole world of fun!  Packed with sprinklers, a small slide and an enormous bucket of water which tipped a huge quantity of water over the park on a regular basis, the splash park provided plenty of entertainment for our children – and for Dave and I as we watched them!  It provides a welcome break from the pool whilst still offering up the fun and refreshment that comes with playing in sprinklers!

    16. Aerial adventure

The aerial adventure is a free activity but it must be booked in advance.  You have to be over six for this high up assault course – and as Chloe isn’t a fan of heights she gave this a miss but it was right up Ben’s street.  Safely harnessed up, he had a great time climbing around the course – and despite his confidence, there was actually one section which scared him – just enough to still be fun of course!  There’s no sense of achievement if it’s all easy is there?

    17. Swim Academy

Swim Academy lessons at Holiday Village Tenerife are lead by ASA-qualified teachers and can be booked in groups or individually from ages 3 right through to adults.  We chose to book an individual lesson each for Ben and Chloe at a cost of 21 euros for half an hour.  They have both been having lessons at home since they were 3yrs old but we thought it would do them both good to have a really focused lesson.  Edward quickly assessed their swimming ability before setting to work on teaching them – he showed Ben that his arms do all the work and that he needs to concentrate on harnessing the power in his legs.  At the end of the sessions Edward gave us a quick overview of what he’d worked on with them and what they needed to do next.  I’d have loved to have been able to book more sessions for them but as a result of the lessons being super popular we just didn’t have the time.  If you do want to book private Swim Academy lessons I recommend you make this a priority on your first day so you can get your places confirmed as soon as possible!

    18.

    Football Academy

Ben had two Football Academy sessions – these were two hours at a time and cost 20 euros each (this also included a Football Academy football shirt to play in).  Football isn’t really Ben’s thing but he knows that he needs to be able to hold his own in the playground, particularly as his best friend is obsessed!  Dave and I decided that a couple of sessions with qualified coaches was worth the investment for him, luckily Ben didn’t need convincing and was really enthusiastic about going.  I had been a little worried that the Football Academy session would be too much for Ben, that the other children would be too good and it would knock his confidence but I needn’t have worried.  The sessions are organised by age group and are tailored to children of all abilities and he absolutely loved it.  In Ben’s words, “It was the first football thing I’ve ever enjoyed!”

    19. All inclusive

Booking an all inclusive break means that there’s no budgeting worries.   From your food, to your towels to the kids’ clubs – everything is included in the price and you could easily not spend a single penny from arriving to leaving.  Of course there are plenty of places you can spend extra money – the spa, Swim Academy lessons, Football Academy, the games room – and these would soon add up, but it really isn’t necessary if you are keen to keep a control on costs.  What money we did spend, was on Swim Academy and Football Academy, a few arcade games, steak supplements and a three hour kids’ party which frankly was worth every penny!)

    20. Check out arrangements

Although check out is 12pm, you are not expected to sit in Reception with your cases all day if you have a later transfer booked.  We weren’t due to be picked up till 8pm so we packed up and checked out whilst the kids were at a Kids’ Club and put our bags into the storage room (you can pay a couple of euros for a locker which we chose to do for our hand luggage as it had my laptop, cameras and all our tablets in).   Once we’d done that we were free to enjoy the rest of our last day at Holiday Village Tenerife – which meant more Kids’ Clubs, Swim Academy sessions and generally lazing about by the pool.  Rather than having to travel home straight from the pool, we were able to book half an hour per room in the Spa to make use of the showers to get washed and changed.

Phew, so there’s just twenty of the reasons why we think you should book a holiday with First Choice at Holiday Village Tenerife . . . if you’ve still got any questions after reading that little lot then leave me a comment or shout me on twitter and I’ll do my best to answer!

Thanks so much to First Choice for inviting us and to all the team at Holiday Village Tenerife for ensuring that we all had such an amazing holiday – you guys are doing a great job and Chloe has the worst case of holiday blues ever to show for it!

Tenerife, Canary Islands Of the seven Canary Islands off the coast of Spain, Tenerife is the most populous.

Eternal spring-like weather shapes the friendly, relaxed character of the people of Tenerife and holidays have been celebrated here for generations. 1,500 kilometers of coastline mean there is always somewhere more beautiful to explore.

Magnificent beaches and a sometimes stark, dramatic and rocky landscape mean there are few places as exotic and otherworldly. Wild with volcanoes, sub-tropical forests and a jet-set crowd, Tenerife is also a stepping off point for the other islands and for nearby Morocco. The people, traditions and cuisine, a unique medley of European and African influences, combine to form a fascinating and inviting vacation spot. Within a few hours of most European cities, Tenerife offers a complete infrastructure that leaves guests from the world over wanting for very little.
