  Lobos Island is small enough that you can probably see most – if not all – of the island on your visit if you wish to do so.

  The main points of interest on Lobos Island are:

  Playa de la Concha is a lovely beach with a pretty cool view to the volcano crater.

  It’s about 5-10 minutes of easy walking from the ferry drop-off to the beach and there is plenty of space for you to find your own little spot.

  Don’t be surprised if some people sunbathe in the nude (as on other beaches in Fuerteventura).

  It doesn’t take long to reach the beach on Lobos Island.Playa de la Concha is quite spacious – and incredible from above!From Playa de la Concha there’s a great view of the volcano crater.

  Puertito Isla de Lobos

  Puertito Isla de Lobos is a small harbour 5 minutes of walking away from the one you are dropped off at when you arrive on the island.

  The water is perfectly turquoise and so gorgeous here.

  It was a little windy when we visited, so we didn’t jump in the lagoon but come at high tide if you want to swim here.

  Montaña La Caldera

  Montaña La Caldera is the highest point on the island at 127 metres.

  The pathway up there is made of volcanic rocks and cement and it’s a good idea to wear hiking shoes or sneakers (though probably doable in sandals) as it can be rather rugged at times.

  From the bottom of the caldera, it takes approximately 15-20 minutes to reach the summit where you not only can look into the volcano crater but also will be rewarded with astonishing views of Lobos Island as well as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

  Faro de Punta Martiño

  Faro de Punta Martiño is a lighthouse in the north part of Lobos Island about an hour walk from the ferry port.

  While the building isn’t the prettiest or open to the public, it’s a nice “goal” for a hike and the surrounding landscapes and views from up there are stunning.

  The trails on Lobos Island are a bit rocky, but nice.Hiking around Lobos Island is one of the more popular things to do on a visit.

  Fun fact: Isla de Lobos means Wolf Island and the islet is actually named after the monk seals that once lived here – which are known as sea wolves in Spanish.

  How to get to Lobos Island

  A 15 minute ferry ride from Corralejo in Fuerteventura takes you to Lobos Island so it’s very easy to visit on a day trip.

  As far as we know, there’s no direct connection from Lanzarote to Lobos Island but you can take a ferry from Playa Blanca to Corralejo and then take the ferry from there.

  There are also tours offering boat trips to Lobos Island from Lanzarote or Fuerteventura where you have a good chance of spotting wild dolphins in their natural environment.

  You can book your ferry ticket online or in one of the ticket booths at the harbour in Corralejo. Just be aware that you also need a permit to visit Lobos Island.It’s relatively easy and cheap to get to Lobos Island from Corralejo. Here you see Corralejo town with the island in the background.

  Opening times

  As there’s no accommodation or camping allowed for tourists on Isla de Lobos, you can only visit the island during day time.

  Most visitors arrive on Lobos Island between 10.00-10.30 and the last ferries leave around 17-18 in the afternoon.

  Price and permits

  There’s no official entry price for Lobos Island, but as most people arrive on organised tours or with one of the tourist ferries, you could say that the transport is the price for visiting.

  Additionally, you need a permit and the authorization can be obtained online, however, some tour companies will take care of the process for you.

  The price for the ferry seems to be around €13 to €15 per adult (children is half the price) depending on the company you choose and whether it includes the permit or not.

  We had a good experience booking online with Naviera Nortour and paid €15 per adult + 2 x €1.5 in administration fees for arranging the permit.

  The access to Lobos Island is limited to 400 visitors per day so if you plan to visit during peak season, it might be a good idea to book your ticket a few days in advance.

  We only booked the day before but we visited in the low season (January 2022). There were very few tourists in Fuerteventura and we saw less than 100 people on Lobos Island.

  When to visit Lobos Island

  Lobos Island can be visited all year round and the weather is very similar to the weather in Corralejo.

  If it is really windy (as it undoubtedly is in Fuerteventura at times) you should be extra careful if you’re going up to the volcano crater. And while beach bumming isn’t the best in overcast or windy weather, hiking all the way around Lobos Island is always a great activity!

  When we visited in January, it was a bit windy. We still enjoyed lying on the beach but the water wasn’t the clearest with all the ripples.

  When we visited Lobos Island, the calima (sand from Sahara) coloured the sky and it was a bit windy but we still enjoyed the day trip very much.

  No matter the weather, you can always hike around the volcanic landscapes of Lobos Island.

  Where to stay near Lobos Island

  Unfortunately, it’s not possible to stay over on Lobos Island so staying in Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura will be the obvious choice as it’s from here the boats leave for Lobos.

  On top of that, Corralejo is the most popular place to stay in Fuerteventura for a reason.

  Staying here means you’ll be close to the small beaches of Corralejo, but also be just minutes away from the famous Corralejo Sand Dunes – the “desert” of Fuerteventura with absolutely stunning beaches.

  Also near Corralejo apart from the protected natural area Lobos Island? The climbable Calderon Hondo volcano as well as El Cotillo and lots of other beautiful beaches.

  Corralejo itself is a cosy town with lots of great restaurants and supermarkets. If you’re looking for plant-based options in Fuerteventura, Corralejo is probably your best bet.

  • Bring your own drinking water in a refillable bottle.
  • Avoid single-use plastics, including straws.
  • Dispose of waste properly. While putting your trash in a nearby trashcan is convenient, wrappers and other small items are prone to get taken by the wind and end up in the ocean.
  • Check your sunscreen. Many brands contain oxybenzone and other chemicals that are harmful to corals.
  • Take only photos, leave only footprints. Let shells and volcanic rocks stay where they belong on Lobos Island.
  • Be considerate of other visitors.
  • Respect wildlife.

  A trip to the Island of Lobos is highly recommended if you’re on holiday in Fuerteventura or Lanzarote. This islet is entirely protected, comprising a small desert paradise where you can enjoy a whole day of sunbathing, hiking and surfing without having to deal with annoying crowds of people.

  The Island of Lobos covers a total surface area of six square kilometres, lying two kilometres from north-east Fuerteventura and eight kilometres from southern Lanzarote. Lobos Island is an authentic ecological treasure; the perfect destination for disconnecting from the stresses of day-to-day life.

  The Island of Lobos: how to get there and entry requirements

  As this is a small protected island, access to the Island of Lobos is limited to 400 visitors per day. The Fuerteventura Island Council issues 400 visitation permits for the Island of Lobos, split equally across two daily windows: 200 in the morning slot and 200 in the afternoon slot, with each permit valid for four hours. In other words, you can only spend four hours on the Island of Lobos.

  Permits are made available on the official website of the Fuerteventura Island Council three days before each visit day.

  If you’re looking to visit the Island of Lobos, you can take one of the various regular boat trips that depart from the port of Corralejo in northern Fuerteventura. It’ll take around 15 minutes to reach the island.

  Besides the regular ferries, you could also rent a private boat in Corralejo to travel to the Island of Lobos. There are options and activities for all tastes, ranging from catamarans and sailing boats to kayaks and ‘water taxis’. Alternatively, there are several options that combine boat rental with snorkelling, fishing, golf buggy rides and bike trips around the island.

  The Island of Lobos

  You can also reach the Island of Lobos from the neighbouring island of Lanzarote, located to the north of the islet across the La Bocaina Strait. It’s slightly further away than Fuerteventura, but if you find yourself on holiday in Lanzarote it’s a perfectly good option for a day trip. In Playa Blanca, in southern Lanzarote, you’ll find various options for getting to the Island of Lobos, some of which pass through waters in which dolphins are regularly spotted.

  Private boat trips usually come with the required permit, although we recommend checking this when you make the reservation.

  Things to do during the trip to the Island of Lobos

  The Island of Lobos is a natural setting of huge ecological importance. However, besides wonderful nature, don’t expect to find any tourist attractions. Lobos Island is home to a virgin volcanic landscape that remains unspoilt; a magical place like no other.

  You will enjoy a heavenly environment

  The ferry will drop you off in the small dock in the south of the island. Close to the dock, heading eastwards, you will find the island’s only buildings. These are a series of oceanfront bungalows, including the island’s only beach restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat. These buildings look out onto a small bay of turquoise waters with a smattering of dark-rocked islets.

  The lack of depth lends a wonderful shade to the bay’s idyllic waters. Snorkel lovers will be blown away by the rich marine fauna, with the crystal-clear waters providing optimal conditions for this sport. A small wooden jetty, the Puertito de Lobos, sticks out a few metres into the bay, where visitors can jump into the water or pose for the perfect photograph. This is just the beginning of your trip around the island!

  Lying westwards of the port where passengers are dropped off by the ferry is the surprising Playa de la Concha de Lobos. Shaped like a crescent or a half-moon, the curvature of this beach almost forms a complete circle. You will feel like you’re swimming in a lake rather than a small island in the Canaries! While the only two beaches on the Island of Lobos are the examples mentioned above, its wonderful coastline comprises other spots where you can head down to the water and take a dip.

  Much like the other Canary Islands, Lobos Island is also a famous surfing destination. Despite its small size, the west coast of the island is exposed to the longest wave in the Canary Islands. This is known as “la ola derecha de Lobos”, measuring 300-500 metres long. This wave is found in the area beside the La Caldera volcano.

  Besides sunbathing on the beach and swimming in the ocean, hiking is another fantastic option for your day on the Island of Lobos. Lobos Island is easy to hike, with well-signposted tracks and barely any difficult stretches. The only difficulty is keeping track of time, being sure to return to the port before your 4-hour permit expires.

  We recommend taking a circular route. Leaving from the Playa de la Concha, your first main milestone will be the La Caldera volcano. This is the highest point on the island, measuring 127 metres above sea level. Despite its low height, it still offers fantastic views of the neighbouring islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, with the Corralejo sand dunes in the foreground.

  Despite it being a short climb, there’s no avoiding the slopes. As with all landscapes in the Canary Islands, this is a stony path, so make sure you bring suitable footwear.

  Reassuming the track after your descent, the route continues northwards, passing by several small coves on the west coast. You’ll soon reach the northernmost tip of the Island of Lobos, which is home to the Punta Martiño lighthouse; a key structure that helps to guide ships through the La Bocaina Strait. Turning back from the lighthouse, another trail will take you back to the “puertito” along the eastern side of the island. En route, we recommend stopping in Las Lagunitas, where the refreshing water encroaches upon several parts of the coastline.

  Lobos Island: Canary Islands’ Secret Paradise

  Places that offer both tranquility and adventure are like rare gems. Not everyone who seeks them can find one. In the Canaries, though, there is one in the north of La Oliva in Fuerteventura. It has a rough landscape with gentle contours formed by the wind and the turquoise sea that surrounds it. It is Lobos Island, the most mystifying in the whole of the Canaries.

  A Brief History

  Before any man arrived in what we now call Isla de Lobos, sea wolves dwelled in this hidden paradise. All that changed when Jean de Béthencourt conquered Fuerteventura in 1405. The once untouched islet became a resupply base. Sea wolves were also mercilessly hunted for their meat, fat, and skin. Because of the massive scale hunting, the very reason for the island’s name no longer lives in it. When Fuerteventura’s eventual fall happened, Isla de Lobos was left disused.

  In 1865, the Punta Martiño Lighthouse at the northern tip of the island, one of the oldest in the Canaries, was opened. Although it was unoccupied for centuries, a change did come in 1968. It was then that the faro keeper, together with his family, moved to the island to operate the lighthouse. His name was Antonio, and he even gained prominence in Corralejo. In fact, a school was named after him.

  The more recent decades have been very kind to this oasis. In 1982, it was classified as a nature reserve and renamed Parque Natural las Dunas de Corralejo e Isla de Lobos. By 1994, it was reclassified as a separate nature park from the Corralejo Dunes and was finally renamed Parque Natural Islote de Lobos.

  An Unforgettable Lobos Island Day Trip

  The 6,000- to 8,000-year-old Lobos Island is a tiny paradise with small but limitless natural beauties. Because of its pristine state, the island has been popular with tourists. Even so, it never has a swarm of visitors. And, as it is a protected sanctuary, intact natural spectacles fill the island.

  El Puertito

  After a short boat ride, visitors disembark at the island’s small port. The few rocks sprinkled around its equally rocky shore form lovely natural sea pools. Aside from the breathtaking Playa de la Concha, many tourists swim here too.

  Enjoy the view of the bouldered bay and the vast blue sea. Also, delight in the sight of the handful little houses dotted on the rough landscape. These abodes are either whitewashed with blue doors or with volcanic rock masonry. Some are occupied all year round, while the others are used as summer homes. For a glimpse of what a truly simple life is, stay a little bit longer in El Puertito.

  Punta Martiño Lighthouse

  From El Puertito, a 3.5 km walking trail leads to Punta Martiño Lighthouse. Up and running by 1865, it is one of oldest in the entire archipelago. Its age, though, only proves that is a timeless beauty.

  With a one-story house affixed to a tower of volcanic rock masonry, it is a classic charmer like the other 19th century Canarian faros. The dark, rugged hill it stands on captivatingly contrasts the glimmering azure ocean. So, if the lighthouse itself doesn’t impress, the postcard-perfect panorama for sure will. It’s an enduring spectacle on a serene oasis which makes it a definite must-visit.

  Montaña La Caldera

  The Montaña La Caldera towers above the whole island at 127 meters high. From El Puertito, the trail that leads to the foot of the ancient volcano is suitable for all ages. It is rough but not at all bumpy. The ascent to the mountaintop, though, is short but can be quite challenging as the path is rather narrow.

  From the peak, the little island, the resorts and dunes of Corralejo, and even Lanzarote can be admired. Unfortunately, access to the summit of La Caldera is no longer allowed. To be permitted, tourists must get authorization from the Cabildo de Fuerteventura. Needless to say, the extra effort is well worth it.

  Playa de la Concha

  Most tourists visit the Canaries for its breathtaking beaches. And, it seems that the hordes of beachgoers skip Lobos Island because it’s known to have craggy shores. The Eden surrounded by dazzling waters has a secret that would change their minds though.

  Only a 15-minute walk away from the port is Playa de la Concha, a secluded and marvelous white sand cove. Its semi-circular bank acts as a breakwater that protects the bay from harsh waves. Aside from its calm waters, the island’s all-year-round sun makes it an even more ideal seaside getaway. For those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the famous Canary resorts, this is the best beach escape.

  Flora and Fauna

  The Lobos Island or Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos is a protected area. As such, its diverse flora and fauna thrive in its volcanic landscape. For them to further flourish, tourists must stick to the paths and areas where they are allowed. Restricted zones are restricted for a reason, and must be respected at all cost.

  The island may look more like a desert, but it is home to more than 130 plant species. Floras such as the Sea Uvilla, White Caleton, and Siempreviva are the most beautiful living accessory to a seemingly arid landscape.

  It is also a sanctuary for birds that nest on its cliffs and rocks. Amongst its feathered residents are shearwater cinderellas, little shearwaters, herring gulls, yellow-legged gulls, storm petrels, and Bulwer’s Petrel. A couple of fish species like the barracuda, bream, Canarian fish, hammerhead shark, and striped fish also dwell in the waters that surround it.

  Traveler Tip

  For those who want a rain-free hike, avoid visiting between November to January. The most rainfall occurs on those months and trails can be muddy.

  There’s only one restaurant on the entire island, so bring plenty of water and snacks. As visitors, remember to bring back what was brought to the island.

  Most people love to bask in the glorious Canarian sun but wear sunscreen as there are few shades around. After all, no one wants to get toasted.

  Dining

  Lobos Island has plenty of sights to offer, but it lacks dining options. As a matter of fact, the only restaurant is Restaurante Antoñito el Farero. This humble food establishment is owned by the son of the original lighthouse keeper.

  The place is often packed with diners so there might be a waitlist. Before sauntering around, consider booking a table first to avoid a long wait. For their best-sellers, try their fried fish and paella.

  How to Reach the Hidden Canary Island

  At the moment, there’s no direct bus from the Fuerteventura Airport to Corralejo. For less hassle, though, tourists may opt for car hires, taxis, or airport transfers. These options are especially popular with families traveling with kids.

  Those who will hire a car must go north via FV-2 to Puerto del Rosario. On the exit, take FV-3 then FV-1 at the northern end of the capital. From there, follow the coastal route which leads directly to Corralejo.

  For those who prefer to ride a bus, take bus line 3 from the airport to Puerto del Rosario. From the capital bus station, take bus line 6 to Corralejo. This option is most popular with people traveling alone. It also the cheapest as it only costs only around €5.

  From the harbor of Corralejo, tourists must take a ferry to Lobos Island. At the moment, there’s but one ferry company that services this route. Tourists can take the 15-minute boat ride (each way) to the island or go for the one-hour excursion. The latter includes equipment for snorkeling and drink on board.

  Lobos Island Is an Open Secret

  The Lobos Island is between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. Around these two giants, the desert islet has gone unnoticed until very recently. Those who have been on its shores and traversed its landscape are surprised. How can such a stunning stretch of land go under the tourism radar for so long? Well, that is both puzzling and something to be thankful for.

  It was declared a protected area before the outside world took notice. For this reason, its natural beauty remains unblemished. It was a hidden treasure that is now an open secret amongst those who love nature and tranquility. It’s a paradise that missed the tourism bus, and we couldn’t be more grateful.

  Lobos Island (Fuerteventura) – Things to do and places to visit

  Despite its small size, there are many things to do on Lobos Island, in the Canary Islands. You’ll find incomparable nature and landscapes that look like they’re from another world on this islet that belongs to Fuerteventura.

  Not so long ago, a large population of sea wolves, also called monk seals, inhabited the island’s coasts; they gave this small volcanic islet its name, which, in Spanish, means “the Island of the Sea Wolves.” Attempts to recover the species have been unsuccessful so far, but perhaps monk seals will be seen again soon on Lobos Island.

  Visit Lobos Island, Fuerteventura

  Isla de Lobos, Fuerteventura has been a protected natural park since 2007. Because of its popularity among tourists, if you’re going to visit Lobos Island, you must know how to get there, how to obtain the permit to visit Lobos Island, and how to make the most of your limited time there.

  Below, I’ll give you all the information you need to know to take a one-day trip to Isla de Lobos and enjoy it as much as we did during our trip to the Canary Islands.

  There is only one way to get to Lobos Island, Fuerteventura, and it is by sea. The ferries leave from Fuerteventura, from the port of Corralejo, to go to Isla de Lobos. It only takes 20 minutes to cover the 5 km that separate these two islands. Visiting Lobos Island is one of the best things to do in Fuerteventura.

  Ferry to Lobos Island

  We took this water taxi to Lobos Island since, in addition to being the cheapest one, it includes the necessary permit to visit the island. On its website, you can check prices and boat schedules to Lobos Island. This is, without a doubt, the best option if you want to visit Lobos Island on your own.

  Another option is to book a boat excursion to Lobos Island, where not only is transfer included, but also activities such as dolphin watching, kayaking, and snorkeling. This is the most comprehensive tour if you want to take it from Fuerteventura, although if you want to visit Lobos Island from Lanzarote, I recommend this excursion. Please note that there are no ferries from Lanzarote to Lobos Island if you want to explore the island on your own.

  Permit to Lobos Island

  Whether you take a ferry to explore the island on your own or book an excursion to Lobos Island, you must obtain the necessary permit to visit Lobos.

  The ferry and excursions to Lobos Island that I have recommended in the previous section already include such a permit, but if you book any other tour or water taxi, you should ask them if the price includes the permit to Lobos Island.

  If not, you can obtain the Lobos Island permit yourself from the Cabildo website.

  Permit to Lobos Island

  Keep in mind that Lobos Island is a nature reserve. When this restriction was first implemented, only 400 visitors a day were allowed, but since September 2019, the limit has increased to 700 people.

  The authorization to Lobos Island must be requested up to 3 days before your visit and has a maximum duration of 4 hours in two time slots; you can visit Lobos Island from 10 am to 2 pm or from 2 pm to 6 pm, but in any case, you will only have 4 hours to explore Lobos Island.

  There is no accommodation on Lobos Island or option for being on the island for more than 4 hours. I admit that this is a shame since you could get to know Isla de Lobos better with more time, but I also think that this restriction is fair in order to protect and preserve Lobos Island. In our case, we visited Isla de Lobos before these limitations were put in place, and we spent approximately 6 hours on the island. Even with 4 hours and a little more haste, it’s still worth visiting Lobos Island.

  Best things to do in Lobos Island (Fuerteventura)

  Now that you know how to get to Lobos Island and how to obtain the permit to do so, I’m going to list the different places to visit on Lobos Island so that you can make the most of the four hours of your visit.

  The island is small and you can explore it in four hours, but I recommend planning what to do on Lobos Island in advance.

  1. Tour the island by bike, the best thing to do on Lobos Island (Fuerteventura)

  You can go to Lobos Island and try to explore it on foot, or rent a bicycle to go faster and make the most of your time.

  Isla de Lobos is not too big. It takes approximately 45 minutes to get around it by bicycle. However, the trail is not in perfect condition. There were sections we had to walk and others with quite a few bumps, but I think biking is the only way to see the island and have time to enjoy its charms.

  1. Tour the island by bike, the best thing to do on Lobos Island (Fuerteventura)

  Even though we were able to visit Lobos Island before the restrictions were implemented and stay on the island for more than six hours, we spent all of our time doing things because there are many beautiful places that are worth stopping at.

  Keep in mind that on Lobos Island, they don’t rent out bicycles. You will have to bring one from Fuerteventura, and this water taxi is a great way to do so. We rented them from Easy Riders, near the Corralejo port.

  2. Punta Martiño Lighthouse, the most interesting thing to visit on Lobos Island

  Until 1958, the only inhabitants of the island were the lighthouse keeper and his family, who were in charge of its maintenance. The Punta Martiño Lighthouse is located 5 kilometers from the Puertito, where the ferry leaves you. It is located on a small hill, called Martiño Mountain, from which you get spectacular views.

  2. Punta Martiño Lighthouse, the most interesting thing to visit on Lobos Island

  This lighthouse is one of the most significant places to visit on Lobos Island, Fuerteventura. Neoclassical in style, this lighthouse was built of basalt stones.

  Since the lighthouse is on a mountain, a large tower wasn’t necessary, so it’s only 20 feet high, as well as 100 feet above sea level.

  If you visit Lobos Island with kids, this might not be the best option, since this area is the farthest from where the boat leaves you, an area called “El Muelle”.

  Puertito de Lobos is the old port of the island. It is no longer used as such but it is right next to “El Muelle”, making it a must-do stop on Lobos Island.

  This small cove of clear blue water is a perfect place to snorkel, thanks to the fact that the sea is always calm here, which facilitates visibility.

  In addition to the swimming area, where you’ll see thousands of fish, here you will find the only restaurant on the island, an ideal place to eat overlooking the sea.

  In a place as remote as Isla de Lobos, the seabed is full of life. If you bring your own equipment, I recommend that you go to the Puertito, since this is where the waters have great visibility and you can admire the entire underwater world.

  Another very popular thing to do on Lobos Island and Fuerteventura is to book a snorkeling excursion. This excursion, in addition to taking you to the island from Fuerteventura (thus saving you the ferry) and leaving you time to explore on your own, will take you to the area with the best seabed and provide you with the necessary snorkeling gear.

  5. La Caldera Mountain, a place you can’t miss on Lobos Island

  Climbing up the 330 feet of Caldera Mountain is one of the best things to do on Lobos Island. From the summit, you’ll see the whole islet, in addition to Fuerteventura and Lanzarote in the distance.

  From El Muelle, you can take the path that takes you to this volcano. Don’t worry – there are a lot of signs that tell you where to go, and it takes approximately 40 minutes to reach the top.

  La Concha beach is not only the best beach on Lobos Island but is also practically the only one. The rest of the island’s beaches are inaccessible or simply form small coves.

  La Concha beach is divided into two sections by a strip of rocks. Most visitors usually stop in the first area, which is also the smallest, perhaps because they are unaware of the existence of the next section. The other section, in addition to being larger, is rather prettier, and hopefully you’ll be practically alone there.

  7. Dolphin watching, one of the best activities to do on Lobos Island

  If you’re wondering what to do on Lobos Island with kids, seeing dolphins is one of the best options. You can take a guided tour of the area where these cute aquatic animals usually swim.

  Of all the options available from Fuerteventura, this is the most comprehensive. You’ll start the tour with an hour and a half of whale watching, where a guide will give you a lot of information about the animals you find. Keep in mind that sightings are not guaranteed, as these are wild animals in their natural habitat, although it’s true that dolphins can be seen very often. With a little more luck, you might also be able to see humpback whales, pilot whales, and sea turtles.

  After this incredible experience, you’ll take an excursion to Lobos Island to see La Concha beach and El Puertito. The tour includes snorkeling equipment, as well as kayaks so you can explore the sea surrounding Isla de Lobos. Finally, you can end the day with a small lunch on the catamaran, before returning to Fuerteventura. This is, without a doubt, the most complete tour for spending a day on Lobos Island.

  If you want to take an excursion to Isla de Lobos from Lanzarote, I recommend this one.

  8. Las Lagunitas, a beautiful bay with natural pools on Lobos Island

  If you decide to take the route that takes you to the lighthouse, you can stop at Las Lagunitas, one of the most interesting places to visit on Lobos Island. There are natural pools here, which are s favorite of visitors who prefer to spend the day isolated from the rest of the world and surrounded by nature.

  In addition, as the bay is such a remote place, there is usually a large influx of seabirds, so I recommend it if you like wildlife photography.

  Las Lagunitas is also known for being where Limonium Bollei grows, a unique plant species found only on Isla de Lobos.

  9. Surfing, an interesting water sport to do on Lobos Island

  Surfing on Lobos Island is the most popular activity for locals. Any casual or professional surfer can enjoy catching the longest wave in the Canary Islands. This perfect and unusual wave can be caught on the southwest coast of Lobos Island, specifically in Marrajo. It’s considered perfect because of its length, diversity of sections, and quality, which make it the most desired wave for visitors.

  9. Surf, an interesting water sport to do on Lobos Island

  Although the place is usually quite crowded, I recommend you try surfing on Isla de Lobos and try to catch this wave.

  10. Hiking on Lobos Island, the best way to see Isla de Lobos

  If you haven’t brought a bicycle, don’t worry. You’ll have enough time to tour the entire island on foot and see its main attractions thanks to the circular route that runs through Lobos Island.

  Keep in mind that the total trail is 8 miles, with an elevation gain of 660 feet, but I assure you that it will be worth it. This is one of the main activities to do on Lobos Island, although you will have to bring hiking boots or, at least, sneakers. Don’t try to do it in flip-flops!

  10. Hiking on Lobos Island, the best way to see Isla de Lobos

  You’ll be able to visit all the places of interest on this tour, such as the Punta Martiño Lighthouse, Las Lagunitas, El Puertito, the Caldera Mountain, and La Concha beach, although you won’t have much time to stop at each of the sites.

  As a recommendation, don’t forget the sunscreen. You won’t find any shade on the whole island.

  Restaurant on Lobos Island, Canary Islands

  There is a unique restaurant on Lobos Island where you can eat with spectacular sea views. The restaurant, which is near the Puertito, is simple and cozy, with good value for money considering that it’s the only restaurant on the island. The variety of dishes isn’t great, but if you like seafood, it’s a must-try.

  I recommend that you go there and make a reservation as soon as you get to Lobos Island because although there are several shifts, as it’s the only restaurant to eat on Lobos Island, it fills up quickly.

  If you’re going to tour the whole island, either by bike or on foot, bring your own snacks. Mind you, make sure you don’t leave a trace and take all your trash with you.

  Lobos Island near Fuerteventura is a fascinating place to explore.
  Located in the Canaries, just 2km North of its mother island, it offers wild beaches, lagoons and volcanic scenery.

  Why visit Lobos island?

  The Fascinating volcanic landscapes of Los Lobos island

  Lobos has a great variety of scenery with beaches, desert area, a caldera, a lagoon and a lake.
  It is actually home to more than 130 species of plant and several birds.

  But for me the most fascinating were those round mounts of lava. They are called hornitos (“little oven”). They are created when lava comes into contact with water creating explosions.
  This is why it is one of my favorite excursions in Fuerteventura

  About Lobos island – Facts

  And here are a few facts about Lobos island Fuerteventura to help you with some context:

  • located only 2km North of Fuerteventura
  • very small – under 5km2
  • estimated to be between 6000 and 8000 Years old
  • officially a nature reserve
  • There are no permanent resident on the island since the lighthouse has been automated
  • its highest point is Montana La Caldera which reaches 123m (403ft)

  About its name

  The name Los lobos means The Wolves. So it is the island of the wolves. LOL
  It comes from the large number of sea wolves that used to live on and around the island (monk seals). A colony had settled there when the island was ‘discovered’ by the Spanish conquerors in the 15th century.

  As you land on the island, near the wharf you can see a statue of the seals to remind us of where the name comes from.
  Sadly there are no more seals to be found, since they were hunted by the sailors and fishermen.

  So how to get to Lobos island? The easiest is from Fuerteventura of course, but you can find boat tours around the island from Lanzarote.

  Ferry to Lobos island

  So first you need to take the ferry from Corralejo to Lobos. 
  The boats are average size, quite comfortable with space inside and outside.
  You can even go down to see the fishes underwater.

  As you float away from Fuerteventura you can see the port town of Corralejo and the volcanic summit of Volcano Bayuyo behind it.
  And you quickly approach the island of Lobos with its biggest crater being La Caldera. (You actually have better view of the whole island on the ferry from Lanzarote)

  You disembark on a wharf, so there are no difficulties. Near the wharf are some general information about the island, the bins and the visitor center. Inside you can find pictures and data about the Fauna and flora of the island.
  This is where you find the only toilets.
  From 1 July to 30 September it is opened 10:30am to 5:30pm and the rest of the year it closes at 3:30pm

  Getting around Lobos island – Map

  So right by the wharf you can find a map of Lobos island with the recommended tour.

  There are 2 types of visitors to the island – the ones that go to El Puertito to lay down and swim and those who want to explore. 
  The former go straight right, so it is quieter to head left as recommended by the map:

  At different crossroads you can find signs indicating the direction of the various landmarks and how far they are.
  I recommend planning a little bit more time than what is indicated. The sun is harsh, there is no shade and sometimes you are walking on sand so it is tiring. Plus you need time to take pictures.

  The paths are clear and you won’t get lost. 
  It is not allowed to go off the paths in order to preserve the fauna.
  Take plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat!!!

  Playa de la Calera (La Concha Beach)

  So the first stop only 10minutes away from the wharf on the left side is the beach called Playa de la Caldera.
  It is a beautiful round sandy area with the Montana La Caldera in the background.
  Playa de la Calera is the official name on the island but many sites (including Google maps) refer to is as La Concha Beach. from what  understand it is because there are rocks in the middle of the sand, so the first half is Calera and the rest is La Concha.

  Because of its shape, it has calm beautiful water.
  A really nice place for those looking the spend the day at the beach.

  The sand is on most of the beach but you also have a lot of lava rocks. I love the contrasts in colours, don’t you?

  Montana La caldera of the Isla de Lobos

  Next the path heads North towards the lighthouse and on the side is the biggest crater of the island Montana La caldera.
  It reaches 123m above sea level.

  After a little while, you get the option to turn on a side path and start the climb of the volcano. 
  It is indicated 30min to the top. The path is quite steep with some steps made or rock. With the harsh sun it can be difficult. From there you have nice views of the island, of the beach and of Fuerteventura.

  I opted to climb at the lighthouse at the other end of the island because it was easier and because it is not as high (so better to photograph the many lava rock mounts). So I have no photos to show you. 

  West walk

  So the West path of the circular walk is really fascinating. You are surrounded by this lava formation, desert landscape with small bushes.
  The sun is very hot!!! but the path on this side is quite easy as it is hard all the way.

  Towards the end, before the lighthouse, you get closer to water and you can see the fascinating cliffs created by the lava flow meeting the sea. Not as impressive as on La Graciosa or at Los Hervideros on Lanzarote, but still I love it.

  Faro Martino (Punta Martino Lighthouse)

  After a bit more than 1 hour, I reached the lighthouse. The climb is really easy and not too steep as you can see in the photo below.
  The lighthouse is still active and is automated. So nobody lives there anymore.
  It date back to 1865 which makes it the oldest one in the Canary islands. It marks the strait of La Bocayna between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

  I love the view you get from the top. 
  You can see the lake and all the little volcanic pyramids. It is quite fascinating.

  East Walk

  I came back via the East part of the loop. The beginning was difficult because it was covered with sand. And I am not good at walking in sand. But after a while it went back to a flat path.

  It is quite amazing to see the plants are able to grow in this harsh landscape.

  Some of the ‘lava pyramids’ are taller than other. You can see the scale in the picture below.

  Las Lagunitas of the Island of Lobos

  After touring a harsh desertic land for more than 1h, it was surprising to discover this blanket of green right in the middle!
  You can find information about it at the viewpoint where this first picture is taken.

  It is a salt marsh called Las Lagunitas. It is subjected to regular floods during high tide which allow the presence of special fauna in the area. And it has created a feeding and resting area for migratory birds.

  However it is a every fragile environnement, so be respectful (not like some people I spotted) and don’t enter the area. Stay on the path, it is already great to see from there.

  El Puertito

  I finished my tour of the island with the small fishing village of El Puertito.
  Apart from the lighthouse this is the only place with houses. Those are weekend houses for local fishermen.

  It has several natural coves that are protected from the waves so it feels like natural pools which are great to just float 🙂
  However there is not much sand. The whole area is shaped by volcanic rocks.

  This is where you can find the only food on the island. It is only serving the fish of the day and you need to book your lunch in advance

  Snorkelling near Lobos Island

  On the return trip on the ferry, when booking here, you can opt for the snorkeling return.
  In that case, the boat enters one of the cove and you can jump in the water before getting back to Fuerteventura.
  After a long walk under the sun, it was great to refresh a little

  However I think that sadly they were dropping food to attract the fish so we could see a lot of them. But this is not great for sustainability.

  From the northern part of the island of Fuerteventura, you can see the Island of Lobos whose surface is less than 5 square kilometres. It is a unique and paradisiacal corner to make a getaway from Fuerteventura and enjoy this Natural Park that stands out for its seabed and stunning views.

  Get to know Isla de Lobos

  In Fuerteventura, Isla de Lobos is located in the north, in front of the beaches and the town of Corralejo. The island has its highest point at the Caldera with 127 meters and its total area is 4.5 square km. square kilometres.

  The name Lobos comes from the fact that it was a place where monk seals or sea lions used to live. In the year 1982 it was declared a National Park and the measures of access and activities that can be carried out have been restricted over time to preserve this incredible natural landscape.

  Corralejo and its National Park

  To get to Isla de Lobos we access the town of Corralejo, famous for the Natural Park Dunas de Corralejo, a privileged natural area whose beaches often have winds and dunes, such as the Duna del Moro. In addition, the park is home to several wild species, some in danger of extinction. It does not even lack the volcano, as it has the Montaña Roja, from which you can enjoy incredible panoramic views. The centre of Corralejo, an old fishing village, has a large number of bars and restaurants and hotels.

  We highlight the former Hostal Corralejo, today Avanti Fifestyle Hotel, in calle Delfín, 1, a cozy boutique hotel on the beach with only 14 rooms, where you can spend the night or in whose restaurant, Rompeolas, under the command of chef César Soto Fernández, you can taste its renowned cuisine of dishes full of flavor and very marine, such as prawns, black rice, scallops, octopus…

  How to get to Lobos Island

  To the island of Lobos can be reached by ferry from the town of Corralejo, in a very short tripIt is a very short trip that takes only 15 minutes. The boats dock in what is known as El Puertito, a small port very close to the only nucleus with buildings on the island and right next to the Playa de Las Conchas, one of the wonders of Isla de Lobos.

  What you can do on the island of Lobos in Fuerteventura

  The island of Lobos is a different place where you can enjoy a unique environment where nature has not been altered by man. The different activities that can be done on Isla de Lobos are:

  Hiking

  One of the main attractions of Isla de Lobos is to walk the trails that exist on the island to know all its corners. It is an island of volcanic origin surrounded by crystal clear waters and some white sandy beaches, a unique contrast that makes hiking in this environment a very satisfying activity.

  Eating in a paradisiacal setting

  The only restaurant on the island, where you can enjoy fresh fish, is located in the only urban centre made up of a few fishermen’s houses. Fishing in Lobos Island is very rich and varied, but it is regulated.

  Enjoying a bath

  Throughout the island there are different beaches where bathing is allowed. One of them is Las Conchas Beachwhere you can enjoy a swim in turquoise waters and white sand.

  The snorkeling in Isla de Lobos is another of the star activities. The seabed in the area is really spectacular so take the goggles and the tube and admire what is hidden under the sea in Isla de Lobos is one of the best options. The kayak is also highly recommended.

  Contemplate a unique view of Fuerteventura

  Lobos in Fuerteventura offers spectacular views of the island of Fuerteventura. From Isla de Lobos you can appreciate in all its splendor the contrast that occurs in Corralejo, where the dunes end in the sea on spectacular beaches. Once back in Corralejo, another hotel, h20 Oceans Dreamsanother boutique hotel, located 550 meters from a white sandy beach, very close to the Natural Park of the Dunes of Corralejo. Its spa centre, Turkish bath, jacuzzi and swimming pool are undoubtedly a good attraction, but above all its gastronomic offer, based on fresh produce and originality, and its terrace and bar, more informal, will ensure we spend a great day.

  Lobos Island in the Canary Islands is a wonderful and unique place, ideal for a day trip and enjoy a different experience, walking its trails, contemplating its seabed or taking a swim in an idyllic setting.

  Los Lobos, new Canary Island

  One day in Fuerteventura we went to check in on a new island in our collection – Los Lobos. This island is located in the strait between Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, but closer to Fuerte (2 kilometers in total). It looks quite small.

  In 2009, when we spent a week in the Costa Blanca (on Lanzarote), we were already going to Los Lobos, but then we did not have time.
  That time we went to Fuerteventura for one day without spending the night and managed to see the dunes of Corralejo, Betancuria, drove through the city of La Oliva and looked at the surfer beach in El Cotillo.
  Therefore, this year we did not consider the dunes in detail, especially since at the moment when we approached them, there was no sun. The day, unfortunately, was not sunny at all. Clouds were flying and the sun jumped out to us only occasionally.

  It has been 7.5 years since our last visit to Corralejo, and our family size has increased significantly. There were two of us then, and now there are four of us.

  Boats to the island of Los Lobos go from the town of Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura, you can also get there from Lanzarote, but there are only a couple of flights a day, and here there are more than a dozen of them.
  Corralejo – one of the main villages of the island. It is located at the foot of a mountain with a picturesque crater.

  Imagine how high the mountain was before it exploded. There are similar craters in other areas of Fuerteventura, as well as on Lanzarote.
  Coralejo is a tourist village, but it has its own identity. Not quite a standard hotel-tourist, as mentioned in the first part of the story about Fuerteventura Morra Jable and Caleta de Fuste.

  Boats from Corralejo to Los Lobos run every hour and a half. Swimming is not far, but the pitching in the strait can be good. On the way, Los Lobos turns to the audience with its highest part – Mount Montaña de Caldera.

  The mountain is actually not high, about 120 meters above sea level, and, of course, it is an extinct volcano. Los Lobos was formed about 50,000 years ago. However, he doesn’t seem to have changed much since then. Most of the island is occupied by what the locals call “malpais” – this is such a volcanic “inconvenient”, “bad land”.

  The pier where the boat arrives is rather improvised:

  Los Lobos is a national park with several trails for walking. It is not allowed to walk anywhere, but in principle no one checks this, and I, to be honest, walked:

  The island is small, I ran around it in 50 minutes slowly, and making stops for photos.

  True, I did not climb the mountain. The girls gave me only 1 hour to explore the island, and then I had to choose: either climb the mountain, or watch everything else.
  Of the rest, there are:
  1) Tourist paths along which inquisitive tourists roam, but at the same time there are few signs explaining what and how they put up here. Part of the paths goes through “mal pais” (these are lava fields, as the locals call them):

  And in the center of the island there is a sandy plain, where sometimes even vegetation is found:

  In one place there is even a semi-dead “loslobosovsky forest”. I couldn’t even restrain myself and went off the reserved path to look at it closer.

  One of the signs for tourists said that over 130 species of plants live on the island, but they seem to hide very well. It seems that there are actually 10 of them, no more:

  Once upon a time people lived here. There were few of them, but they also left:

  2) Lighthouse. All curious tourists actually go to the north end of Los Lobos to see the lighthouse.

  I thought that there would be an impressive view of Lanzarote from here. But for some reason, the view turned out to be not so bewitching:

  Lanzarote is 8 km away, and opposite you can see the resort village of Playa Blanca, where we once spent a happy week in April in 2009.
  The view turned out to be much steeper on Los Lobos itself:

  At the foot of the hill with the lighthouse there is a small fresh lake.

  It must have been very valuable to the inhabitants of the island.
  Lighthouse was built in 1860. Since then, people who served the lighthouse have lived here. The profession was called the beautiful word “farero”. But in 1968, the lighthouse became automatic and since then no one has lived here anymore.
  3) The third attraction of the island is the beach (Playa de la Concha). It seems that the weather was not very conducive to swimming, but most of the tourists who arrived on the island preferred to settle down here. Many of them had sandwiches with them (or whatever foreigners take with them on a hike).

  But the main focus of the island’s visitors was the village. People still live there. According to official data, there are 4 permanent residents on the island.

  There are more people in the village, but probably some people come here to work, and the job here is to serve and entertain day-trippers coming from Fuerta and Lanzarote.
  It seems that you can rent a house here and spend the night in these houses:

  The village is located in an amazingly beautiful bay, protected from the ocean by a peninsula and a small island.

  You can eat here. There is no choice of dishes, the order takes about an hour. You just come and say: “I’ll have three servings of food.” They write down the name and it takes a really long time to prepare everything. We ordered and I went to run. While the girls were playing in the bay:

  The food is delicious, they pour wine. You only need to pay in cash, of course.

  In general, Los Lobos is good. I would go again.

  We still have to climb the mountain, and somewhere under the mountain there is a trendy surfer beach. On the way back to Corralejo, the guys who came there with boards rode with us on a boat. Everyone is so tanned and surfer. They spoke among themselves, oddly enough, in German.

  Near the pier there is a bust of the only famous inhabitant of these places – the writer Josephine Pla:

  According to Wikipedia, this serious aunt, looking like an evil teacher, was Paraguayan: “a poetess, playwright, master of art reading, essayist, ceramist, art historian, artist and journalist.” Josephine was born to a local lighthouse keeper in 1903. She spent very little time here, as the family moved to continental Spain, where she subsequently married the Paraguayan artist Julián de la Herreira. Well, in 1926 they left for Paraguay, happily avoiding all the horrors of life in the following decades in Europe. At 19Her husband died in 37 – and there, in Paraguay, a girl from the Canaries managed to become one of the pillars of local literature.   Geography

  Lobos Island, like all other Canary Islands, is a volcanic island. Its age is estimated at 6,000 to 8,000 years. The highest point is on the volcanic caldera, Montaña La Caldera, 127 meters (417 feet) above sea level. The island has a small lake, but the low rainfall creates an arid landscape.

  Fauna and flora

  Despite being a desert and volcanic landscape, Lobos Island has a large number of natural habitats. For some, the sea is just the sea, on the shore of which you can spend your vacation, sunbathe on the beach or swim … Nothing more … For me, the sea is something more … I can sit for hours on on the coast of my native Baltic, admire the white caps of the waves, listen to the cries of seagulls and think about the eternal. .. Of course, feeling boundless love for the sea, I wanted to see the ocean too… to feel its power, to feel its character…

Until recently, it was only a dream, but if you really want it, any dream can turn into reality. Last year’s trip to the Canary Islands allowed me to touch the legendary Atlantic, and thereby make one less dream.

The Atlantic Ocean , bounded by Europe and Africa to the east, and the two American continents to the west, is the second largest ocean on earth and second only to the Pacific. Its area is approximately 91.56 million sq. km², average depth 3600 m, and the greatest – 8742 m (Puerto Rico Trench). It is distinguished from other oceans by a strong indentation of the coastline, which forms numerous seas and bays, especially in its northern part.

The name of the ocean comes from Greek mythology from the name of the titan Atlas (Atlanta), supporting the sky near the garden of the Hesperides, on the western tip of the earth. However, there are two alternative versions. According to one of them, the ocean got its name from the legendary island of Atlantis – the great civilization of Atlantis. On the other – from the Atlas Mountains in northern Africa.

The Atlantic Ocean is divided into northern and southern parts, the boundary between which is conventionally drawn along the equator. The Canary Islands are located in the middle of its northern part, closer to the African continent and are washed by the cold Canary Current.

From the balcony of our hotel, on the northeast coast of the island of Fuerteventura, there was a gorgeous view of the Atlantic towards the African continent. The wonderful panorama was complemented by two neighboring islands – a huge Lanzarote (Spanish Lanzarote ) and a small deserted island Los Lobos (Spanish Los Lobos ).

It’s still great to sit on the balcony early in the morning, drink delicious tea, contemplate the turquoise water surface, listen to the sound of the surf and breathe the ocean air! The smell of the ocean is, perhaps, the first thing that rushed into my mind, and the first difference from my native Baltic … It is impossible to convey it, you must definitely feel it yourself!

The second is the endless loud sound of the surf that fills all the space around. But he does not bother at all, but on the contrary, gently envelops and soothes. The sounds of the ocean surf, to the accompaniment of all kinds of musical instruments, are one of the most powerful and popular means of relaxation.

Depending on the weather, the ocean looks different. On cloudy days, the Atlantic looks menacing and changes color from lead gray to dark blue. But on sunny days, the ocean shimmers with all shades of beautiful turquoise and greenish colors.

With the onset of dusk, the picture changes dramatically. The setting sun beautifully illuminates the clouds, reflecting bright colors on the water surface. In cloudless weather, the sky is strewn with myriads of stars… It seems that two oceans, water and air, unite into one, erasing all the boundaries between them. At such moments, I want to look at this natural miracle and think about the infinity of the Universe.

The moon rising over the island of Los Lobos only adds harmony to this amazing fantastic picture.

Another difference between the ocean and the sea is strong tides – an interesting natural phenomenon that occurs as a result of the gravitational attraction of the Moon and the features of the relief. And if at sea these phenomena are insignificant and almost imperceptible, then here, after low tide, the water goes from 20 to 100 meters, exposing the volcanic bottom and forming small lagoons.

One day we made a trip to the west coast of the island, to a small fishing town El Cotillo (Spanish: El Cotillio ), which I will tell you more about next time. Our goal was to see “another ocean” – powerful and raging. From the western side of Fuerteventura, there are no obstacles for the waves, so they roll with great force onto the rocky coast of the island, breaking with multi-meter fountains of snow-white spray.

Swimming here is extremely dangerous, but this does not stop professional surfers, for whom extreme and big waves are only a joy.

A harsh picture opens up from the sheer shore. .. there are no longer snow-white beaches and gentle surf… Tons of water with colossal energy fall on the coastal cliffs, as if trying to make their way deep into the island.

Frankly speaking, it is very difficult to take your eyes off this panorama. At some moments you forget that you are in the Canary Islands, because the surrounding reality would probably be more suitable for Norway or Kamchatka. It’s even more difficult to realize that there, beyond the horizon, there is nothing for many, many miles … and America is even further away.

Famous navigators-discoverers of past centuries flash through my head. You are amazed at the bravery and courage of these people, who set out to conquer the boundless and eternal unknown elements with disastrous storms, not knowing what awaits them ahead, and whether they will return back…

Having discovered the Atlantic, I wanted to go even further from the coast, cross the equator, and also get to know the rest of the oceans, especially since I already have something to compare with. It remains only to make dreams come true, and I will strive for this!

FUERTEVENTURA – THE CANARY QUEEN OF BEACHES Canary Islands, Fuerteventura, Gran Hotel Atlantis Bahia Real 5*. Review of the tourist about the trip

Despite the huge number of the most beautiful places on our globe, for some reason I am regularly attracted to the Canary Islands. And it seems that there is a problem with greenery, and there are only volcanoes and lava, and I return there again and again. Tenerife and Gran Canaria have already been mastered by our family. According to the stories of Yuri (St. Petersburg), we met Palma, Homer and Hierro. But there were two uncovered islands – Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, the thought of which haunted me. Therefore, when planning my next vacation, I had no questions about where to go. Of course, to fill our “Canary gaps”.

A LITTLE HISTORY AND FACTS

In general, the Canary Islands is a very interesting place on the globe. A long time ago, about 20 million years ago, powerful volcanic activity was seething on the earth, which actively changed the relief of the earth’s surface. New heights were born on the continents, and future islands rose from the depths of the ocean. It is believed that it was then that the islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote appeared – the first of the chain of future Canary Islands. Soon, having formed a new link, Gran Canaria appeared, then, after 8 million years, Tenerife and La Gomera. The youngest islands – El Hierro and La Palma – formed about 3 million years ago. There have been and are many legends about the islands at all times, the main of which boils down to the fact that the Canary Islands are the remains of the mythical Atlantis (although, I think, Santorini would willingly argue with them), and the indigenous inhabitants of the Canaries – the Guanches – are the inhabitants of the sunken Atlantis. But back to the oldest of the formed islands and the second largest – Fuerteventura. After all, our path is exactly there. The island is about 100 km long and 5 to 30 km wide. The coastline of the island is 340 kilometers. Fuerteventura is closest to the coast of North Africa of all the other Canary Islands, being only 90 km from Morocco. Thanks to this, Fuerta is warmer than other islands, there are practically no doges and the sun is all year round. Here are the longest and most beautiful beaches, I would even say – ideal: the smallest white sand from the Sahara, azure waves that are not inferior to the azure of the Caribbean, and a complete sense of freedom.

Most of the island, especially its central part, remains pristine and undeveloped. Fuerteventura is the most sparsely populated of all the Canary Islands. The population of the island is only 100 thousand people (22 people per 1 km2). For example, the population of Lanzarote, which is half the size of Fuerteventura, is about 150 thousand people. According to tradition, all the indigenous peoples of the Canary Islands are called the term “Guanches” (in translation – “man”), but formally, not Guanches, but mahorers lived in Fuerteventura. “Mahorero” comes from the ancient word “machos” meaning a type of goat shoe worn by the indigenous people. They also come from North Africa and are related to the Berbers. In the pre-Hispanic period, the island was divided into two kingdoms with two rulers: Giza and Ayoze. The north, Mahorato, was ruled by Giza, and Jandia, in the south, by Ayoze. But in 1402, the Norman knight Jean de Betancourt began to capture the entire archipelago, starting from Lanzarote, and the peaceful local tribes could not offer him worthy resistance. Two years later, Jean de Bethencourt was proclaimed King of the Canary Islands. After which colonization began in earnest, and the capital of the island was established, the city of Betancuria, located in a fertile inland valley less prone to pirate attacks than the vulnerable coastline. By the way, speaking of Betancourt… I think this name is known to many. After all, one of his descendants, who was born in the Canaries almost four centuries later, worked in Russia for a long time. He designed both the Moscow Manege and the bridges in Peterhof and on Kamenny Island in St. Petersburg. It was not just an architect, but a mechanical engineer and organizer of the transport system of the Russian Empire – Augustine de Betancourt Yes, and this great-great-grandson of the great Jean de Betancourt was buried at the Smolensk cemetery in St. Petersburg.

GEOGRAPHICAL AND CLIMATIC CONDITIONS

Now Fuerteventura is a rather bald and deserted island, without any vegetation (except for cacti and succulents). This is especially visible from an airplane. By the way, there are really a lot of cacti and aloe here. 650 endemics grow on a small area of ​​the island. But the island was not always so bare. In former times, the island was as green as the modern La Gomera, but active deforestation for the needs of shipbuilding, strong winds, rare rains and close proximity to the African continent did their job … erosion processes started and the island began to turn into a bare rocky desert with African landscapes. The absence of high mountains on the island (the maximum height of the ridges does not exceed 1000 m) also played a role in the formation of the relief and microclimate. Humid Atlantic clouds, not delayed by anything, quickly sweep over the island, the clouds have nothing to catch on, so rains are considered a rarity here. Happiness if precipitation falls at least 3 times a year (usually this happens in February-March).

But if there is no rain on the island, then everything is fine with the winds. And the island got its name precisely for its winds. After all, Fuerteventura in translation is a strong wind.

The tourist season in Fuerteventura lasts all year round. Due to its proximity to Africa, Fuerta is the warmest of all the Canary Islands. The climatic conditions are said to be reminiscent of Florida and Mexico, which are at the same latitude. The temperature of the water in the ocean, even in winter, does not fall below 19degrees. And the warmest water is in September-October. At the end of October, when we were here, the water temperature reached +24 degrees, which is extremely atypical for the usually cold Atlantic. As for the air, the temperature is comfortable all year round. In winter – around 25, in summer it is warmer – it reaches +30 degrees. In autumn, in October, it was warm with comfortable +27. The only thing was that in the evening, after sunset, because of the wind, it became cool and I wanted to put on a blouse.

As for the fauna, there are no annoying insects, no poisonous snakes or spiders. Nothing poisonous on the island, in principle, does not live. There are very few animals on the island – these are mainly goats, the ubiquitous chipmunks and donkeys. And camels (mostly domestic). But several hundred species of birds live here, plus many migratory birds make a stop in Fuerteventura.

Now the island is recognized as a biosphere reserve and starlight reserve – here you can see the maximum number of stars in the night sky. The symbol of Fuerteventura is the goat, which is depicted on almost all souvenirs and stickers. There are a lot of goats on the island. As they say, even more than people. Moreover, there are three types of goats. The first type is domestic goats that live with the owners, they are milked, fed, and so on. The second type (intermediate) is semi-wild goats that live on their own, but come for milking. And the third species is completely wild goats that do not come anywhere, they get their own food and live, it would seem, in general in uninhabited places.

BEACHES

As I mentioned in the title, Fuerteventura is the queen of beaches among the Canary Islands. Here and beaches with white Saharan sand, and with golden and black volcanic. The beaches are densely populated and completely secluded, beaches with waves (a paradise for surfers) and without them. The length of all beaches is a third of the island (about 100 km).

HOW TO GET THERE

There are no direct flights to Fuerteventura from either Moscow or St. Petersburg. Therefore, the most convenient way to get there is with a transfer in Madrid or Barcelona. There is only one airport on the island, it is located in the capital of the island – Puerto del Rosario. We took a taxi from the airport to the hotel. Parking is right outside the airport. The trip is metered. To the north of the island (Corralejo) a trip will cost about 30-40 euros, and to the southern resorts (Morro Jable) it will cost 90 euro.

There is also a more budget option – a bus. From the airport you can take bus number 3, which goes to the Puerto del Rosario bus station and leaves every half an hour (travel – 1.40 euros), and from there you can already transfer to a bus to any corner of the island. The only thing I can say is that the buses don’t run often. On the way from the airport to Corralejo, we personally did not meet a single bus in either direction. Therefore, if you want to use the bus, you should study the schedule in advance.

By the way, the name of the capital – Puerto del Rosario – is translated as Port of Roses. Although once the capital had a less poetic name – Puerto de Cabras (Port of Goats), but then it was decided to rename it, since the old name was considered not very attractive for travelers. But the goat is still the symbol of the island.

GRAN HOTEL ATLANTIS BAHIA REAL

Initially, I wanted to live in the north, in Corralejo, next to the dunes. Therefore, the search for a hotel is greatly simplified. From the pictures, I really liked the Gran Atlantis Baia Real, and I took it. But I must say right away that it is far from the dunes. The dunes start about 15-20 minutes walk from the hotel (to the left). On the right, in about 20 minutes, there will be the city of Corralejo, where you can walk along the promenade, go to numerous restaurants and shops. From there, ferries go from the port to neighboring Lanzarote. If someone wants the hotel to stand directly in the dunes, then I recommend Rio Oliva – there are already real dunes, but apart from them there is nothing near the hotel. Those. in fact the hotel is in the middle of nothing, all around only sands. And if you want to hang out, you will have to walk for an hour to get to the city. Although you can also take a taxi – the trip will cost five euros, no more.

Coming back to our hotel. The hotel, in my opinion, is the best in Fuerteventura. It stands right on the Atlantic coast, on a sandy beach. The hotel is stretched along the beach, so I think most of the rooms will offer stunning views of the ocean and the neighboring islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote.

The hotel is made in the colonial style, everything is very beautiful, respectable and rich. Upon check-in, they are treated to welcome champagne (i.e. cava). We took the Junior Suite. It is divided into two zones, in fact, two rooms. So my husband and I were placed on one half, and the child on the other). But my favorite part of the room is the terrace. It was huge and looked directly at the Atlantic. And given that the room was on the first floor, the Atlantic was very close – just reach out your hand. And in front of the room, a wonderful palm tree grew, which I really liked to photograph in the mornings, when the rising sun stuck in its branches every time.

The hotel area is a real oasis, especially in comparison with the surrounding landscapes. Palm trees, banana trees, and even frangipani grow all around. All surrounded by outlandish flowers and funny figurines of animals. Throughout the territory there are soft corners for relaxation. At the pool on the sun loungers, although there is no pandemonium, but there are plenty of people. I am surprised every time. Near the ocean, and warm besides, well, what a joy to hang around in bleach? We, despite the fact that the pool was right in front of the exit from our room, never once experienced it.

The hotel’s beach is slightly different from the photo on the Internet. Everything is so, the sand is available, only this is how it looks at high tide (closer to the night). And during the day, at low tide, everything looks different. Stones are exposed and it is not easy to enter the ocean. However, this is not a problem. There are two piers, from where you can freely go down the ladder into the water. There is no depth at once, it will be slightly to the waist, not deeper. And the bottom is sand, without a single pebble. The water, as I already mentioned, is warm, clear, a lot of fish swim. The sunbeds on the beach are very interesting. In the form of a house with walls with which you can isolate yourself from neighbors.

For those who can’t get enough of just sunbeds, there’s Coco Beach Chill Out, a beachfront lounge offering Balinese beds and personalized bar service. But this is for additional bablos, of course. I didn’t find out the price of the issue, because. we have never been on the beach. They came – bathed – went on about their business. We had only 4 days on the island, there was no time to lie down)

Meals at the hotel. Breakfasts are wonderful, as it should be in a good “five”. All kinds of jamon-sausage-cheese cuts, salad mixes “do it yourself”, next to all kinds of sauces for dressing, eggs in any form, sausages, grilled vegetables, muesli flakes, fruits in a wide range, freshly squeezed juices, smoothies. Even hot dishes were present: fried fish, nuggets, jamon cutlets, potatoes, pasta, porridge. You won’t remember everything. Oh, and a gorgeous sweet table. There the chef baked pancakes, pancakes and Belgian waffles. And kava, where without it)

For dinner, the hotel hosts a themed buffet dinner every day. We went once – just for an evening of Canarian cuisine. What was not there! The tables were full of everything, including seafood. The choice was so rich that I didn’t even take my favorite shrimp, considering them too banal in this company. Well, the husband and child hit the steaks, which were grilled here.

Availability of shops near the hotel. 5-10 minutes from the hotel (down the street to the right, in the direction of Corralejo) there is a huge supermarket where you can buy everything you need.

DUNES OF CORRALEJO

The Dunes of Corralejo is a huge national park that stretches on both sides along the road to Corralejo. The park covers an area of ​​more than 2,600 hectares and is significantly larger than the similar Maspalomas park in Gran Canaria. Once in the dunes, you immediately feel that you are in the desert. And only the azure waters of the ocean take you away from this illusion. The sand on the dunes is sand brought here directly from the Sahara, because Fuerteventura is the closest island to Africa. The ocean in the Corralejo Dunes area is amazing in color: all shades of turquoise and azure, depending on the depth. The beach offers views of the islands of Los Lobos and Lanzarote. This beach with white sand and azure water is considered one of the most beautiful on the island. It is a favorite place for shooting commercials of heavenly places and photo shoots. I really wanted to arrange a photo shoot there too. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out quite the way I imagined. The husband and child categorically refused to move deeper into the dunes, where there was an illusion of an absolute desert. They walked about 15 minutes from the hotel and said: “That’s it, we like it here, and the place for swimming is good, we’ll stop here. ” They did not pay attention to my remarks that these were not quite dunes, because here and there some bushes stuck out. “Nothing” – they say, “shield the bushes with your fluffy skirt – and it turns out that you are in the desert.” So, somehow, and took a photo session)

Despite the wondrous beauty of this beach, there is one “but”. As in Gran Canaria, gentlemen nudists love to hang out in the dunes. On the beach, here and there, “nests” of stones are equipped, in which these nature lovers live. Actually, I think these “nests” were originally built to protect against the wind. But now only nudists live there, where, apparently, they protect their chandala from the wind, and us from the sight of their chandala;)

ISLAND SIGHTSEEING TOUR

Studying the issue of excursions, I found out that there are a lot of excursions on the island. And by bus with large tour groups, and individual cars, and jeeps, and buggies. That’s just all of them were limited to either the north or the south. And I wanted to see everything at once in one day due to lack of time. After all, we had only 4 days, and each of the days was strictly planned. So I took a private tour. Guides (Anastasia and her husband Andrei) found on the tripster website. Great guys. Already 9years live on the island, came from Odessa. The tour was conducted by Andrei (and Anastasia and I then met by chance at the market the next day – the world is small). Andrew explained and showed everything perfectly, so I recommend it. He says that even Eagle and Tails turned to them to film a program about Fuerteventura. Andrew told them Ok, no problem. However, having received an idea of ​​the difficult logistics and costs, R&D have abandoned this idea for the time being.

Below I will tell you what we saw during the tour. I had to shrink it a little in order to turn it from a two-day excursion around the entire island into a one-day one, covering all the main places.

EL COtillo

El Cotillo is a fishing village in the northwest of the island. This is a quiet, peaceful place. There are no hotels here, but apartments are actively rented. There are several cozy restaurants, life here flows lazily, in the best traditions of the Spanish “manana”. The main attraction here is, of course, the ocean, which is eye-catching and breathtaking. There is a wide strip of beaches here, where everyone can find a secluded place. Apart from the beach, there is nothing special about El Cotillo. There are only a couple of attractions – this is, first of all, the El Toston tower. It is located on the outskirts of the town and was built in the 18th century as a fortification to protect against pirates. A little north of the city is an old lighthouse, which also serves as a fishing museum. Well, the skeleton of a whale on the shore, immortalized in a monument. Actually, that’s all. But if you are looking for peace and quiet, and even for very budgetary money, then you are here.

FUCKING AND ROCKS KALETA NEGRA

Ajuy is also a fishing village famous for its black volcanic sand and rocky beach surrounded by steep cliffs on both sides. The waves in this place can be very high, and in places near the rocks you can observe dangerous whirlpools and funnels. But Ahui is not so much attracted by the beach as by its famous caves located in the rocks of Caleta Negra. The caves are so high that in them you seem like a midget. And very lengthy. The tunnels are up to a kilometer long. Getting to Caleta Negra is not easy, you have to climb up large stone steps, you must definitely walk in comfortable shoes and take water with you. The views from here are so fantastically beautiful that you begin to understand why this place is called “Ahuy” – it conveys the meaning exactly. This is a real paradise for geologists too, because the rocks here are so bizarre and multi-layered, and the sedimentary rocks of the oceanic crust are clearly visible.

SACRED MOUNTAIN TINDAYA

Mount Tyndaya (400 meters high) can be seen from afar. It has long been a place of religious worship of the ancient Canarians. The ancient inhabitants of the island considered the mountain sacred, magical properties were attributed to it. This lonely, relief, windswept mountain stands out against the background of arid flat landscapes typical of the island. Objects of high historical, cultural and archaeological value are found here. Therefore, entry to the territory of the mountain is strictly prohibited. Access is allowed only to the military and scientists exploring this mountain. I had to admire the mountain from afar and go further.

BETANCURIA

Betancuria is the old capital of the island, a very beautiful settlement with a rich historical past, founded by Jean de Betancourt. It is located in the crater of an extinct volcano. What is the legend about. The volcano, at the foot of which the city is located, was not always extinct. One day it started erupting. All residents of the city were ordered to immediately leave their homes and leave the city. However, residents acted differently. They lined up in front of the volcano and began to pray together. And suddenly the lava flows stopped right on the way to the city. Such is the miracle.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Betancuria stands out in the city, which was built over 100 years from 1404 and incorporated elements of different styles: from Gothic to Baroque.

Near the island there is a mirador on the top of Pico de Betancuria, from where you can enjoy the most magnificent view of the island. A spectacular 4.5-meter monument was erected there to the ancient leaders of local tribes – Giza and Ayoze. Now Betancuria looks the same as it did 7 centuries ago.

COFFEE BEACH

Kofete is number one in my ranking of all the beaches I have seen around the world. In fact, there are two beaches here: Cofete and Barlovento, which smoothly flow into each other and stretch as far as 30 kilometers. This is the perfect beach, where there is only you, space, wind, the sound of waves and kilometers of golden sand. There is not even a memory of civilization here. There are no hotels, no restaurants, no settlements. People come here specifically to enjoy the loneliness and splendor of nature. Here it seems that you are at the end of the world. Swim, jump in the waves, have a picnic and sit, admiring every piece of this beach, soaking up this beauty and drinking chilled champagne. This is my paradise! But getting to this paradise is not easy. Cofete Beach is located in one of the most isolated corners of Fuerteventura from the outside world. Access to this area is carried out only through one dirt road, which will take an hour and a half, at least, to get to the beach.

WINTER’S VILLA

There is another place on the beach that attracts many tourists. It is very beautiful and lonely stands on a slope, on the mountainous coast of the Jandia peninsula. From here you have a magnificent view down to the large sandy beach of Cofete. This is the villa of Gustav Winter – a man with a romantic halo, elegant, educated, and, as he is presented, in black glasses and with a black dog. His romance is also rather “black”, since Gustav Winter’s connections with Nazi Germany are beyond doubt. One day at 19In the 30s, for unknown reasons, General Franco gave the German engineer Gustav Winter the south of the island, which was uninhabited, where this villa was built on an isolated cliff. In 1939, local residents were evicted from Jandia, and in 1941 the peninsula was sold to the German company Dehesa de Jandia under the leadership of engineer Gustav Winter. Here Winter built a villa in which he lived for the rest of his life. The house is famous for its legends. Some claim that a network of underground passages was built under the peninsula. One of them connected Cofete with Morro Jable, that is, it crossed the peninsula through and through, from coast to coast. Traces of these passages can still be observed on the nearby mountains, which here and there have some depressions, which may well be underground passages leading to another part of the island.

Another legend – in the area of ​​the Jandia Peninsula there was a secret base of German submarines. They hid in numerous underwater grottoes and lava tubes that are typical for these places. There is information about the attempts of the British to conduct aerial photography and reconnaissance from the air in 1943, which ended in the death of their aircraft. It is known for sure that German submarines entered the port of Las Palmas in the early 40s. 6 such cases are documented.

The house was surrounded by a fence, guards with dogs guarded it around the perimeter. The road to the estate was built by prisoners from the Tefiya concentration camp. Later, these people talked about the construction of an airstrip on the territory of the villa. The base was also used as a staging post at the end of the war when Nazi criminals fled to South America, including the main one, Adolf Hitler, who allegedly did not actually get poisoned, but fled to Argentina with Eva Braun. It was here that they underwent plastic surgery. And, of course, treasures, how could it be without them … They say that the treasures of the Third Reich were taken out and hidden right here, in local dungeons. They still excite the imagination and haunt many adventurers. It often happened that people who were actively trying to get to the bottom of the truth of this place suddenly died suddenly. Here is such a “black romance” of this place in myths and legends. By the way, Winter’s son did not deny that after the death of his father during the renovation of the villa at 1985, the entrances to its underground premises were tightly cemented. Now the protection of the villa has been removed, tourists can freely inspect it.

OASIS PARK

Oasis Park (Oasis Park) – a park of cacti and animals was opened on the island of Fuerteventura in 2000. Today it is one of the largest cactus parks in the world, as well as other attractions that complement the rest in this park, since its territory is 160 thousand square meters. m. On the territory of the Cactus Park, 2300 different types of cacti from all over the world are collected, and the total number of plants is about 28 thousand. Some of the plants of the cactus family reach 4 meters in height. Representatives of the animal world from all over the planet are also collected here. Motionless giant reptiles, rare birds, lemurs, mongooses, cheetahs.

Tickets for children over 12 years old and adults cost 33 EUR, for children from 4 to 11 years old – 19.50 EUR, for people over 60 years old – 28 EUR. Additionally, you can pay for camel safaris, interaction with lemurs and sea lions. We “interacted” with lemurs – very interesting. Especially, to hear the enthusiastic stories of the child that there were already three lemurs sitting on it!

Oasis Park is located far from Corralejo. Drive an hour and a half. Getting by public transport will be difficult and expensive. However, every morning at 8.15 – 9.30 from different parts of Fuerteventura there are free buses to Oasis Park, at 16. 30 – 17.30 flights return. Very comfortably. SEA WALK

Studying the list of excursions in Fuerteventura, I came across one very interesting, pleasant and completely relaxed. It was proposed to go on a catamaran to the island of Los Lobos – a small virgin island in the middle of turquoise waters, where there will be an opportunity to practice any water sports. The tour was offered by Fuertecharter. The four hour trip included free use of kayaks, paddle boards, snorkelling equipment, curricón fishing (from a moving catamaran), or simply relaxing on board with unlimited cava/wine/beer/soft drinks and snacks. The catamaran made a stop at Playa dela Concha, an idyllic spot with turquoise waters. There was also a stop on the island of Los Lobos to explore this island a bit. Los Lobos Island is no less interesting than all the other Canary Islands. It is tiny and uninhabited. This is a nature reserve with an area of ​​​​6 square kilometers, in which several small lagoons await you, where tourists are very fond of swimming. Apparently, the water there is like fresh milk.

There are several hiking trails around the island, leading to the old lighthouse and to the top of the mountain. It is impossible to get lost there, as the trails are well marked and there are signs everywhere. It will take about 2-2.5 hours to go around the entire island. The name Los Lobos means “wolves”. This is due to the fact that people who sailed to this island for the first time saw huge seals off its coast, which they imagined as wild animals))) The landscapes on the island are absolute Mars, something from the world of fantasy.

CANARY CUISINE

The most popular representative of the traditional cuisine of the island is papas arrugadas (shriveled potato) – potatoes “in their skins”, boiled in very salty water and served with fragrant mojo verde or mojo picon sauces (garlic, pepper, herbs, olive oil and vinegar) . In addition, the local hand-made mahorero cheese made from goat’s milk is also popular. He is considered the best in the Canary Islands and often takes prizes at international exhibitions. I love gambas al ajillo (garlic prawns) and also fish baked in salt (it has become my favorite way to cook fish). The rabbit in salmorejo sauce (conejo al salmorejo) is also popular there, there is meat and a variety of seafood. Simple, light and unobtrusive cuisine, which I really, really like to meet.

This is how our 4 days in Fuerteventura flew by. But this is not the end of the journey. After all, we have not explored another island – Lanzarote, where we will go further. To be continued.

Paradise Lago Taurito is one of seven large hotels located in Taurito — a self-contained resort park nestled in a desert valley on Gran Canaria’s south coast. Taurito is laid out like a village, with a small cluster of thatch-roofed kiosks selling excursions, and a main pedestrian walkway lined with countless market stalls. It also comes complete with its own beach, water park, disco, arcade, restaurants, bars, and supermarket. In other words, it’s best suited to those who prefer quick and simple access to everything, without the inconvenience of leaving the area.

At 192 rooms, the hotel itself is a rather large, mid-range all-inclusive with a casual vibe. Common areas are spacious, with high ceilings, beige marble tiling, and Greco-Roman style statues and water fountains. While it may appear to verge on formal, the constant foot traffic and packs of energetic kids certainly offset any stuffy decor. During our visit, some areas — including the restaurant at peak lunch hour and the pool — were borderline chaotic. The hotel is best suited to families accustomed to noise and the constant buzz of activities, and many hail from the U.K.

  Very good

  good hotel. the rooms are spacious, the opportunity to use the water park for free (but in the pools there is sea water, it’s not very pleasant to slide down the slides), it’s very close to the beach, you just walk along the water park and shops (the prices there are no higher than in the city, you can buy souvenirs) – this does not cause inconvenience – no need to climb uphill or roll down. The food is varied and delicious.

  although the hotel positions itself as a 4-star all-inclusive hotel, it tries to charge for literally everything. internet 25 euros per week, sun loungers in the water park and on the beach 3 euros per day, shower and toilet on the beach 1 euro, beach towels 1 euro per day + 10 euro deposit. room cleaning every other day.
