Of course, compared to the cities of Eastern Europe, the cost of a night in hotels and hostels in Berlin is not so attractive, but due to the popularity of the destination and the large number of flights, tickets to Berlin can be bought quite inexpensively (especially if you take care of buying a few months before the trip).

9. Riga

    Tourists will face new restrictions on electric scooters in parts of Tenerife next year. The Canary Islands hotspot is cracking down on the controversial mode of transport.

    Tenerife, one of Spain’s top holiday hotspots, is set to introduce new rules for people using electric scooters. Tourists could face fines of up to £2,600 for breaking the new laws.

    The Santa Cruz Council in Tenerife has approved a new Mobility and Road Safety order which regulates the use of electric scooters.

    The new rules will apply to privately owned scooters, companies that rent the scooters and guided tours.

    Under the new guidelines, people won’t be able to use electric scooters on pavements or in pedestrianised areas.

    Riders will need to get off the scooters and walk with them or they could face a fine ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 euros (£1,327-£2,654).

    Electric scooter riders must also get off the scooters at pedestrian crossings and cross on foot.

    Every user will also be required to wear a helmet, as on a bicycle and they must be age 16 or over.

    Leaving a scooter badly parked will be judged as a minor infraction but could still incur a fine of 750 euros (£663).

    Electric scooters will also likely be banned from seafront promenades and town squares which are usually pedestrianised.

      Riders may use the scooters in cycle lanes on roads but if there isn’t a cycle lane, they can’t travel on a road with a speed limit higher than 30km per hour.

      Rental companies will also be required to follow new rules and must use a location-tracking app to monitor the scooters.

      Tour guides will need to ensure that there is a gap of 50m between different groups at all times.

      The new rules are expected to come into place in February 2023 after receiving final approval.

      Cigarette butts are a major source of coastal pollution and can be extremely harmful to marine life.

      The new rules will also require beach bars and restaurants to have bins and stop customers from littering.

      The popular holiday destination is aiming to reduce the amount of litter spoiling its stunning coastline.

        What’s the Weather like in Playa Del Carmen in February 

        Temperature 

        Temperatures start to warm up in February in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, though it is still winter and one of the coldest months. Thanks to its location close to the equator, Playa del Carmen sees a mild climate year round, ensuring warm weather and plenty of sunshine even in the winter months. February is also part of the dry season, which means that the resort sees barely any rainfall. This, combined with hours of sunshine and high temperatures make it the perfect place to go for some much-needed winter sun.

        During the hottest parts of the day, temperatures in February can rise to 29°C and above,
        but you can normally expect average temperatures to sit at around 24°C. Even in the evening it is still very mild, with average low temperatures sitting at around 20°C. This means that t-shirts, shorts and swimwear are perfect for the daytime, but you might want some slightly warmer layers for after dark. Remember to pack lots of sun cream too because, even though it is still winter, the sun is very strong at this time of year.

        Rain

        February falls in Playa del Carmen’s dry season and it is actually one of the driest months of the year with only around 15mm of rainfall throughout the entire month. This tends to fall over just 2 days, so it is highly unlikely that you will get caught in any showers. With only a 13% chance of rain throughout February, there is no need to pack an umbrella or waterproofs you can always seek out shelter if the heavens do open up.

        Sunshine Hours

        Playa del Carmen is situated close to the equator which means that there is barely any change in sunshine hours throughout the year. Luckily this means that, in February, you can expect to enjoy around 9 hours of sunshine per day plenty of time to get out and about, soak up the sun on the beaches, and explore everything the resort has to offer.

        Average Sea Temperature 

        Beach-going is a popular pastime for visitors to Playa del Carmen, as the resort boasts a number of lovely sandy beaches. But more importantly, the water is very warm even in February. Despite it still being winter, sea temperatures languish at a tropical 26°C, providing the perfect environment for sunbathing, swimming, and exploring the region’s colourful underwater world. Bear in mind that there is a 25% chance of a windy day at this time of year so, if it does get a bit blustery, be sure to keep an eye on the changing currents and waves.

The rustic décor of the lounge provides a natural atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and indulging in a little bit of wellbeing. The bar also serves as a shop where you can buy some of the ingredients and health foods on offer, plus it also runs a series of yoga and Pilates classes for those looking to truly chill out.

        Coffee Stop is the perfect place to enjoy a hearty breakfast, or to stop at for a quick bite to eat throughout the day. Set amongst a relaxed, laidback surrounding in the heart of Playa del Carmen, Coffee Stop stocks a range of coffees and teas, as well as cold drinks such as Mocha Frios and Caramel Frappes. The menu is filled with delicious bagels, including tuna, cheese and ham, salami, and jam, and there are a selection of croissants, too, ranging from marmalade to cheese, ham, and salami.

        Things to do in Playa Del Carmen in February 

        The Nuestra Senora del Carmen Catholic Church is a beautiful white-domed building close to the beach. It’s surrounded by green palm trees and the interior is classically simple, with a bright and airy ambience thanks to the huge, archway windows. Visitors can attend Mass ceremonies every weekend which welcome in new guests with open arms, or they can simply visit in their own time and enjoy the peaceful environment.

        The ruins of Coba lie just two hours from Playa del Carmen and offer an insightful look into the rich and fascinating history of Mexican life. There is a huge pyramid typical of the Mayan era, as well as hidden passageways moving through oversized, gnarled trees and there are numerous wildlife species that call the area their home. Though a few of the buildings have been restored, many have been left in the state they were found in, meaning visitors can experience what life might have been like for Mayans back in the early days.

        The Chaak Tun Cenote is a real hidden gem, tucked beneath the thick layers of jungle in Playa del Carmen. Situated below the ground, it opens out into a clear blue lake framed with knobbly stalactites and stalagmites and uneven, rock beaches. Visitors can explore the numerous decorative caverns that make up the cenote whilst learning more about the natural history of the site, which is named after the Mayan God of rain.

        Playa del Carmen is located along the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. It traces its roots back to the pre-Columbian Mayan civilization. Aptly named “Xaman-Ha” which translates to “waters of the north”. It was considered an important stop along the Mayan pilgrimage to Cozumel. In 1519, Spanish colonists traveled throughout the Playa del Carmen area, bringing with them the Catholic faith; some Europeans also settled in the area and this was the time when the area experienced a major boost in commerce.

        In contemporary times, Playa del Carmen grew as a tourist spot in its own right and its central spot in the Riviera Maya further strengthened this position.

Some people like colder weather, and others prefer a warmer climate. Some are fine with some humidity, and others are not.         These are some examples. I will try to answer the question with a more generic person in mind. The more detailed information in this article should be enough to check further if this applies to you as well.

        Weather in the Canary Islands in February

        The Canary Islands have warm weather all year round – this place is one of those places where eternal summer goes on for all 12 months. However, there are not many tourists in the Canary Islands in February. And this is an excellent reason to visit here for those who prefer calmness and measuredness to noisy crowds.

This year-round pleasant weather makes Tenerife a top holiday destination at any time of year.

        Although the weather doesn’t vary between the seasons, it does between the north and the south of the island. Generally speaking, the south of Tenerife enjoys warmer temperatures, more sunshine and less rainfall than the north of the island, which is why most holidaymakers choose to stay in the south. Despite this, Tenerife is well known for having a plethora of microclimates, so the weather could still differ according to what part of the south you’re staying in.

        Spring Weather in Tenerife South

        Spring is only really a transitory state in Tenerife, turning winter into summer. Average temperatures are 20â°C, climbing slightly from the cooler winter before growing more intense in the summer. Rainfall is moving in the opposite direction, dropping from 15mm over two days in March, to 7mm over only one day in April. This is a good sign that the warm, dry summer is on its way. Sea temperatures, as always, are slower to shift towards their yearly highs than the temperatures on land. March still sees waters at their coolest, but as this is only 19â°C it can’t really be complained about!

        Many people are surprised to discover how much cooler the average sea temperature for the Canary Islands is compared to the Mediterranean. That’s because unlikeSpain,Cyprus,Crete, Corfu,Maltaandthe Balearicswhich are surrounded by the warm Mediterranean Sea, the Canary Islands are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, which is significantly cooler.

        Summer Weather in Tenerife South

        If you visit Tenerife South in summer, you’re very unlikely to see anyrainfall.June andJulyhave an average monthly precipitation of 0mm testament to how little rainfall the south of the island experiences during this time of year!Mayand August experience a meagre monthly average of 1mm, whilstSeptember receives a monthly average of 4mm.

        Average temperatures rarely exceed 25â°C and average high temperatures rise to 28â°C, makingSeptemberthe hottest month of the year in Tenerife South. During the daytime, you’ll need to apply lots of sun cream and wear light beach clothing to keep cool. Temperatures drop a fair bit at night, to 21â°C in August, but you can still wear shorts and t-shirts without feeling cold at all.

        August, September and October see the highest average sea temperatures, at 23â°C, meaning that beach time is an absolute must. Whilst the sea is always warm enough for swimming whenever you visit South Tenerife you’ll need to take a dip to cool off in summer.

        July is the sunniest month of the year when the south of the island boasts an average of ten daily hours of sunshine.

        Autumn Weather in Tenerife South

        Autumn in Tenerife South is really only the time when summer turns into winter. This can be seen by the dropping of temperatures, falling from 24â°C in October to 22â°C in November, and a sudden leap in rainfall. Tenerife summers are famed for their minimal rainfall, but as winter draws near the precipitation rises. On average 12mm falls over two days in October, whilst 26mm falls over two days in November. Whilst these amounts are still rather low, they are a massive increase compared to June and July’s 0mm.

        The highest monthly rainfall Tenerife South has ever experienced is 212.8mm, which was recorded at Tenerife South Airport on November 1983. The highest amount of rainfall to ever fall on one day occurred on the 19thof this month, when 136mm fell within a single 24-hour period.

        November starts the period with the least amount of sunshine in South Tenerife. An average of six hours of daily sunshine will now run through until February when it will begin to rise again.

        Winter Weather in Tenerife South

        The wettest month of the year is December, which is subject to an average of 30mm precipitation spread out over four rainy days. Drizzle is the most common type of precipitation to affect the island, which occurs on 35% of days with rainfall. This is followed by moderate rain (28%) and light rain (24%).

        The most amount of wet days in a single month in South Tenerife was experienced in December 2001 when 14 wet days occurred, whilst December 2002 saw three stormy days that’s the highest number of storm days a month has ever experienced.

        JanuaryandFebruaryare the coldest months of the year, when the average temperature is 19â°C and the average low temperature drops to 15â°C. Even though these months are cold for the locals, most tourists from Europe will find the temperatures pleasantly mild. You won’t need more than a thin jumper or cardigan and a pair of trousers or long skirt to keep you warm of an evening. Many of the hotels heat their swimming pools during these months and with 6-7 hours of daily sunshine, you’ll still get plenty of sunbathing time in.

        The coldest temperature ever recorded in Tenerife South is 9â°C which was registered at Tenerife South Airport on 16th January1988. The lowest minimum average temperature is 12.9â°C, which was registered across February 2009.

        Weather Hazards

        The only time temperatures change significantly in Tenerife South is when there’s a calima an unusual weather phenomenon which can occur at any time of year. Whilst the trade winds usually blow over Tenerife South in a north easterly direction, a calima occurs when the winds blow in directly from the east. When the winds come in from this direction, they travel over the Sahara Desert in the north of Africa first, bringing with them extremely high temperatures and concentrated dust and sand particles in the air which result in very limited visibility. When the region is affected by a calima, average highs can increase up to 10â°C hotter than normal.

        It’s very difficult to predict when a calima will occur the island usually gets a day or two notice at the most. Moreover, it’s almost impossible to tell how long they will last. Mild calimas can stay for just one or two days, whereas intense ones can last for up to a fortnight. There is no way to completely avoid a calima. If you’re struggling with the heat and dust, you can choose to stay inside your air-conditioned accommodation or hit one of the beaches on the south eastern coast of the island. This part of Tenerife is almost always affected by strong winds, which help keep the air as cool as possible and make the high temperatures a bit more bearable. The inland mountainous parts of the island are often cooler than the coast, so you can also consider hiring a car and driving up in the hills to avoid the heat.

        Even though Tenerife is subject to storms each winter, the island is still very unprepared for it. When a lot of rain falls within a short period, as is customary in the winter months, the drains across the island quickly get blocked up, which results in flash flooding and the closure of roads. Sometimes, rainfall can get so intense that beaches get buried under huge puddles of water or large portions of sand get washed away. Fortunately, storms like this usually only last for a few hours and are quickly replaced by bright sunshine shortly after.

        If you’re willing to travel further, long-haul destinations include Orlando in Florida, Dubai and Thailand.

        The Post Office report found those destinations to be the cheapest for Brits, using a three-course dinner for two with wine, a cup of coffee, a bottle of local beer, sunscreen, bug repellent, a Coca Cola can, a glass of wine, a bottle of still water as cross-references to compile the list.

        The best bargain holidays were in Turkey; however, the temperatures are not the warmest in winter.

        Spain and Cyprus are good contenders coming in fifth and sixth spots.

        The average cost for a package holiday, a daily cup of coffee, beer and a three-course meal, is less than £500 per person.

        Italy may create a new quarantine zone due to spikes in coronavirus death tolls (update) the death toll and the number of cases have risen.

        According to the Civil Protection Agency, 27 people have died from a serious contagious disease in Italy in the last 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 79human. The increase in deaths was the largest since the outbreak started 12 days ago in the wealthy northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto. Lombardy was hit the hardest, but the virus has since spread south.

        Residents are blocked inside the affected cities, and the police prevent unauthorized persons from entering.

        Washington State Buys Motel to Isolate COVID-19 Patients (Updated)and those who are actively undergoing treatment.

        “We have entered a new stage of struggle to contain and mitigate this outbreak,” Konstantin said at a press briefing.

        Officials did not disclose the location or name of the motel, but are expected to release more information after the purchase is completed in the coming days.

        According to MyNorthwest, modular housing units throughout King County, including Seattle, will also be used to accommodate patients.

        Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe discussed the coronavirus situation in China with US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper in a telephone conversation Wednesday, the Chinese Defense Ministry said.

        Wei said that the positive trend in China’s coronavirus situation is getting stronger, according to a statement posted on the Chinese Defense Ministry’s official WeChat account. He also said that the two countries should resolve their differences through dialogue and consultations.

        Esper expressed his willingness to promote closer dialogue and consultation between the two countries, as well as strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the field of epidemic control and prevention.

        Calling its anti-virus campaign a matter of “national existence,” North Korea banned foreign tourists, postponed the school year, quarantined hundreds of foreigners and thousands of locals who traveled abroad, cut off almost all border traffic with China, and mobilized tens of thousands of health workers to monitor for residents and isolating people with symptoms.

        One can only guess how many people are infected in North Korea.

        Doctors Surprised by Children’s Immunity to Coronavirus (Updated)

        As the deadly coronavirus continues to spread across the globe, doctors are puzzled by children’s apparent resistance to the deadly disease. Meanwhile, supermarket shelves are being stripped amid heightened concerns about the virus.

        In China, children under 19 make up 23% of the total population compared to 62% of adults aged 30 to 79years.

        An analysis of 44,672 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in China published by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that:

        • Less than 2% of cases (965 cases) occurred in children under the age of 19, compared with 87% in adults aged 30 to 79.
        • Children in China were also less likely to die from the disease than adults.
        • Deaths among children aged 9no one was younger, although the overall case fatality rate is between 2% and 4% in Hubei province and 0.7% in other parts of China.

        So why are children more resistant to coronavirus?

        There are two main scenarios:

        1. The new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, is less likely to infect children than adults.
        2. Children have milder or no symptoms and are therefore less likely to seek medical attention than adults.

        The direct translation of Fuerteventura means strong (fuerte) fortune (ventura), but it’s supposed to describe the windy climate as well. Besides the strong wind, the island is known as a paradise for white sand beaches. Entirely true, but there are more things to see and do in Fuerteventura than sunbathing all days.

        During the road trip we propose in this 5 days Fuerteventura itinerary, you will have the chance to explore the charming villages, unique landscape and rock formation. For a moment, you will think you are on another planet.

        5 days Fuerteventura itinerary

        This post will give you all the information on indispensable things to see and do in Fuerteventura in 5 days and which to exclude. At the end of each day, you will find suggestions for additional best things in Fuerteventura so you can modify your Fuerteventura itinerary to meet your travel style.

        To follow the suggested Fuerteventura itinerary for 5 days you should rent a car. It’s the easiest way of transport around the island.

        DAY 1: Discovering Eastern Fuerteventura

        Landing in Fuerteventura in the early afternoon, we decided to explore the Eastern coastline while driving toward our base for the first few days in South of Fuerteventura.

        Salinas del Carmen

        A few kilometres from the Fuerteventura airport lies over 26 thousand m2 of salt ponds votes as the best salt in the Canary Islands in the Official Agrocanarias 2020 Marine Salt Contest. Salt production started precisely here in the 18th century. Today the Salinas del Carmen produce around 60 tons of salt per year.

        The visit to the salt ponds is free of charge. From the parking spot, go to the right (opposite the museum) and down. You will see the entrance on the left side. Wander around the salt worker’s house, warehouse and ponds of unique colours. To get to know the process of producing the salt in details, visit the museum.

        Pozo Negro

        The village of Pozo Negro is an archaeological remain of the settlement of La Atalayita. Tourist untouched area is an excellent escape for those to step back in time and enjoy unspoilt nature. There are no facilities on the black volcanic beach. Apart from a few fishermen’s houses and two local restaurants, there is nothing else to do.

        Entallada Lighthouse

        This active lighthouse is situated around 200 meters above the sea on high cliffs. It’s the largest one in the Canary Islands and the closest point to Africa – 100 km from Morroco.

        To reach this point, you need to pass the fishing village Las Playitas that we will visit afterwards. The last portion of the road is relatively narrow and not suitable for two cars meeting. Therefore, please be cautious when driving as there is no fence. Once there, you can find a large car park and a wooden path to the viewpoint offering a spectacular view over the ocean.

        We recommend you stop by in the morning to admire the sunrise or in the afternoon to watch the sunset.

        Las Playitas

        The traditional fishing town in Fuerteventura features small white houses and volcanic sand beach. Mainly a family resort area and a great stop to enjoy your lunch or dinner while visiting this side of the island.

        Landing in the morning or deciding to be stationed on this side of the island, we highly recommend adding below beaches and beautiful places in Fuerteventura to your itinerary. Due to rainy and windy days, we didn’t stop at them and so regretted it. But hey, you can’t control the weather.

        DAY 2: Beach hoping on the South of Fuerteventura

        The second name for the South of Fuerteventura is beaches. The most extensive coastal area with sandy beaches everywhere you look. We decided to stationed ourselves here to explore them for a day before heading to the other side of the island. There are many resorts directly at sea, with Morro Jable being the biggest town in this area.

        Playa de Sotavento

        Endless golden beach sand is stretching over 6 km. It is made of 5 beaches: Playa de La Barca, Playa Risco del Paso, Mirador, Malnomre and Playa de Los Canarios. It’s ideal for windsurfers and kiteboarders enthusiasts.

        The tide variation of the sea creates beautiful lagoons. The water is incredibly clear so that you can see even the tiny fishes. Due to its length, there is enough place to find your oasis and enjoy far away from the others. To see them make sure to come early in the morning. The sea temperature was pleasant in February, even for people freezing like me (Tjaša). You can park directly at the beach.

        We would highly recommend stopping and enjoy this incredible beach. It was our favourite beach in Fuerteventura.

        Playa Esmeralda

        Next to Sotavento beach, you can find numerous other sandy heavens. We decided to stop by Playa Esmeralda. It’s a more windy beach and nudist as well. However, you don’t need to be a nudist to enjoy it. You can also rent sunbeds.

        Playa La Pared

        Touring the northern part of the island by car will inevitably lead you to see the windmills wherever you go. The estimated number of windmills in Fuerteventura is around 1000.

        They were introduced to the island in the 18th centuries. The abundance of cereals at that time contributed to their importance. The first mills built were tower type. It’s the type best known to all. They have a circular shape and three floors of height.

        The most preserved are located in Villaverde (you will find more information later on) and in Tefia. Both are easily accessible by car.

        We ended the day by catching the sunset at the Grandes Playas Corralejo.

        DAY 3: Unique landscape of central Fuerteventura

        We devoted the third day to explore the central part of the island while moving towards the north, where we spend the rest of four days. We booked a hotel in Corralejo to be close to the other point of this five days Fuerteventura itinerary and the airport.  

        Viewpoints overlooking unique landscape

        There are many gorgeous viewpoints where you can stop and admire the unique landscape making you think you are on a completely different planet. The best and most rewarding ones for us were Mirador de Sisacumbre, Mirador del Risco de las Peñas and Mirador de las Peñitas. 

        We have also stopped at:

        • Betancuria viewpoint
        • Mirador Guise y Ayose
        • Mirador de Morro Velosa. 

        They are all next to the road leading towards Corralejo, making it easy to quickly decide whether you want to stop or not.

        Ajuy caves

        Driving from the first viewpoint, Mirador de Sisacumbre, towards the west coast of Fuerteventura, we stopped at Ajuy caves. They form the oldest rock formations in the Canary Islands. More than 100 million years ago flow of lava and sediment coming to the surface created these unique forms. In 1987 they were declared a National Monument. Make sure to visit them and travel back in time to the very origins of Fuerteventura.

        Arriving from the main road, you will see a free car park. From there, descent to the beach and continue to the right side. The road to the caves begins on the beach itself and it’s nicely marked. You should set aside not more than one hour to go around. We recommend comfortable shoes.

        Barranco de las Peñitas

        One of the most exciting hikes on the island is Barranco de las Peñitas. You can find the 2 km long route between the town Vega de la Peñas and the enclave known as Buen Paso.

        To start the walk, turn left when descending from the Miradors de las Peñitas. Drive to the restaurant Casa Naturaleza and over the bridge where you will find small parking. The path begins a few meters from here. From there, follow the trail taking you through the route lined with palm trees. It reminded us of a path leading to an incredible oasis with a secret water pond. At the moments, it felt like someone moved a piece of Morocco to Fuerteventura.

        After walking for some time, you will reach the dam wall or Peñitas Dam, which is no longer operating. The artificial stream enables the creation of series of small pools. Walking further alongside the stream, you will reach a white house (small hermitage) called the Ermita de las Peñitas. This is the most beautiful part of the path.

        The first part is not steep and is suitable for almost anyone. The path is also marked, making it hard to get lost.

        How to reach the Arco?

        At the end of the Barranco de las Peñitas route, continue straight until you see the ruins of an abandoned house. There is a split and you need to use a slightly marked trail towards the north. Soon the marked route disappears and you need to climb up the rock, sometimes also with the help of your hands. It gets a little complicated and difficult if you don’t have enough condition. Once you reach the top, you will see the Arco de las Peñitas on your left side. A natural wonder in the middle of rock forms an arch similar to those you see in the National parks in America. It took us about half an hour to complete the second part of the hiking.

        Betancuria

        Betancuria is a former capital city of Fuerteventura and the first city built in the Canary Islands. It was founded in the 15th century by Jean de Bethencourt, a Norman conqueror, due to its natural benefits. Positioned inland and with fertile land surrounded by mountains to prevent any invasions. However, the city was under several attacks during history.

        The most beautiful part of the small town is the Iglesia de Santa María de Betancuria. The first church built on the island has managed to preserve only the bell tower. However, the charming and picturesque walk towards it surrounded by beautiful flowers and palm trees will stay in your memory. There is not much more to do than have lunch or a refreshing drink at one of the restaurants, but Betancuria is so worth the stop and a quick glimpse into the past life in Fuerteventura.

        Molino de Tefía

        DAY 4: Best of the North Fuerteventura

        From volcanos, incredible beaches and popcorn on them to windmills, the symbol of the island. All that you can find on the north of Fuerteventura. This part of the island is windier than the south and the sea was way colder. Due to this is heaven for surfing and kiting. Life happens in Corralejo, where most of the resorts are and consequently the tourist during their holidays.

        Calderon Hondo

        Calderon Hondo is part of several other volcanos which are together known as the Buyayo alignment. They emerged around 50 thousand years ago. The lava they produced contributed to the enlargement of the northern part of Fuerteventura, making it even closer to its neighbour Lanzarote and creating the Lobos island.

        To access the volcano from Corralejo, drive towards Lajares and leave the road at the sign for Majanicho. You will see the parking lot at the foot of the volcanos. From there simply follow the road and begin the journey. It took us 40 minutes to reach the top offering an impressive panorama view over the other volcanos and Fuerteventura. The highest point of the crater is around 280 meters above sea level.

        La Oliva and windmills

        A small village surrounded by the volcanic mountains was the island political centre between the 17th and 19th century replacing Betancuria. Today it’s mainly focused on agriculture. It’s also home to Tindaya, a sacred mountain. In the eyes of the aboriginal inhabitants, the shape of a foot of the hill suggested it has magical properties. You can climb the mountain, which is accessible through a rocky road. Another option is to stop at the Mirador de Vallebrón, which offers fantastic views over Tindaya and its unique surroundings.

        Another famous part is two windmills on a hilltop separating the cities of La Oliva and Villaverde. You can drive up to the hill with the car and take great photos with the gorgeous landscape.

        El Cotillo

        A small fishing village located on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura managed to retain much of its charm over the years. A great day trip from Corralejo to enjoy some of the finest beaches on the islands. As the west coast is windy, these beaches mostly attract surfers and kite surfers. Its location also provides a great place to catch one of the best sunsets you’ve seen.

        Barranco de Los Enamorados

        Close to the village of Lajares you can find one of the wonders of Fuerteventura. The fossil dunes are dating back more than 135 thousand years. This area began to exist when the sea level lowered. Then, it was carved out by water and shaped by the wind.

        The Barranco de Los Encantada got the nickname Barranco de Los Enamorados due to many couples from Tindaya and El Cotillo coming here to get away from the crowds and spent a romantic evening.

        The 4 km long ravine of fossilised sands is truly impressive and hidden from the eyes. We followed the below instruction and were not able to find the prettiest part of it. Give it a try. We cross our fingers you’ll be luckier. To reach Barranco de Los Encantados, you need to take dirty off the road at the roundabout at Lajarers towards El Cotillo.

        Playa del Bajo de la Burra – Popcorn beach

        It’s one of the most exciting beaches on the northern coast of Fuerteventura. Instead of rocks, you will find tiny algae that look like popcorn. Isnt’ it so cool? Unfortunately, it doesn’t taste like popcorn.

        After some research I found out that what looks like popcorn are dead red algae, more specifically Rhodoliths. For the time of their life and under the sea they are red colour. However, after they die, their skeleton becomes white due to the remaining lime. The waves carve the skeletons and bring them to the beach.

        You can reach it directly from Corralejo either by foot (one-hour hiking) or by car. Most of the itineraries suggest going all the way to Majanicho, but it’s not necessary. Use off the road on the right side of the Avenida Juan Carlos I. There is oversized parking and the northern beach of Corralejo. Just follow the road and you will arrive at the beach in 10 minutes.

        It’s a great place to visit and see the algae for yourself. But it’s not a beach where you would sunbathe and swim.

        DAY 5: A step from the capital to the desert

        To finish our stay in Fuerteventura and due to the windy climate at the time of our stay in February 2021, we had to adapt our itinerary from relaxing at the beach to finding a last-minute solution that wouldn’t take much of a drive. We did stop by the Grandes Playas de Corralejo and stayed there for half an hour, but I (Tjaša) was freezing.

        So we decided why not visit the island’s capital to see why no one suggested it to us.

        Puerto del Rosario

        As most towns here, Purto del Rosario was a small fishing village without significant importance turned into the capital city due to its central location. The latter made it possible for the city port to grew and became the main trading route for Fuerteventura. The growing importance made the city capital of Fuerteventura in 1860.

        Mainly people stop in Puerto del Rosario arriving from the airport or are passing through to one of the resort towns. It’s a quiet city with a few bars and nothing else. It could be because of the Covid-19 situation, but we had difficulty finding a bar to sit down and have a drink. There is a lack of buzzing vibes that would attract tourist coming mostly for beach hoping and relaxation.

        Dunas de Corralejo

        Have you ever seen kilometres of sand dunes and be a step from miles of turquoise beaches? Neither have we. Welcome to Corralejo sand dunes – the natural wonder of Fuerteventura. The dunes covering almost 3 thousand hectares were declared a natural park in 1982. They are also the largest ones in the Canary Islands that can in some places reach up to 50 metres of height. You have to park next to the beach and walk into the desert. There is a lot of free parking available, but you can also catch a bus or hike from the centre of Corralejo.

        Next to the dunes you will find Grandes Playas de Corralejo. Long beaches and clear water is split into small beaches. They are a nudist-friendly and great spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

        Due to rainy and windy weather, we were not able to finalise our itinerary as planned. But here are some other beaches we included based on our research.

        Summary of 5 days Fuerteventura itinerary

        Each island of the Canary Islands is different to the other. But we didn’t expect that it will impress us so much. From the first corner out of the airport, we couldn’t get enough of this unique landscape.

        We could do much more in these five days, but you cannot plan the weather. If you have some additional time, we recommend prolonging it for one or two days to stop by other major sights – La Cofete beach and the natural pool. You won’t be disappointed. Everywhere you look, you will find great photo opportunities and views that will stay in your memory.
