We base the humidity comfort level on the dew point, as it determines whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Unlike temperature, which typically varies significantly between night and day, dew point tends to change more slowly, so while the temperature may drop at night, a muggy day is typically followed by a muggy night.

The chance that a given day will be muggy in San Juan is gradually decreasing during February, falling from 86% to 82% over the course of the month.

For reference, on June 12, the muggiest day of the year, there are muggy conditions 100% of the time, while on March 9, the least muggy day of the year, there are muggy conditions 81% of the time.

All data relating to the Sun’s position (e.g., sunrise and sunset) are computed using astronomical formulas from the book, Astronomical Algorithms 2nd Edition , by Jean Meeus.

All other weather data, including cloud cover, precipitation, wind speed and direction, and solar flux, come from NASA’s MERRA-2 Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis . This reanalysis combines a variety of wide-area measurements in a state-of-the-art global meteorological model to reconstruct the hourly history of weather throughout the world on a 50-kilometer grid.

Land Use data comes from the Global Land Cover SHARE database , published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Elevation data comes from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) , published by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

  2. Mauritius

  4. Red Sea, Egypt
  5. Barbados
  6. Phuket, Thailand
  7. Gambia
  8. Marrakech, Morocco

Whether you’re looking to escape the flurry of festivities or simply need some seasonal sunshine, there’s a wealth of desirable places to choose from when it comes to finding winter sun in December.

As you might expect at this time, reaching truly hot and sunny conditions requires a mid-to-long-haul flight, with Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, such as Marsa Alam, and gorgeous Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands two of the closest viable options for a beach break.

If you’re thinking of heading to either of these destinations, however, do book yourself accommodation with a heated pool to guarantee water warm enough for a good swim.

For something a little more exotic, you can see Mauritius, St Lucia and Barbados are sitting pretty in our top 10, and for good reason.

During this time, the luxurious Indian Ocean island enjoys hot and super sunny weather with just the outside chance of encountering a passing shower. Meanwhile, over in the Caribbean, it’s the start of the dry winter season with hot days, the same amount of sunshine as Mauritius and slightly warmer sea temperatures, perfect for swimming or watersports.

Goa takes the crown in December for its abundance of sunshine (a whopping 10 hours per day) and high temperatures both in the sea and on land; it’s a really glorious time to go to the west coast of India and make the most of those long golden beaches.

If you’re looking for a city break to remember, the winding scented streets of Marrakech are wonderful in December. Expect seven hours of sunshine per day and pleasant conditions with temperatures around 20°C. Go for the good food, beautiful gardens and to experience souk-shopping for last-minute Christmas presents.

Top winter sun holidays in January 2023/2024

  1. Goa, India
  2. Maldives
  3. Barbados
  4. Phuket, Thailand
  5. Mauritius
  6. Kerala, India
  7. Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain
  8. Cape Town, South Africa
  9. Grenada
  10. Marrakech, Morocco

What better way to kick start the new year than with a relaxing winter sun break? Many people choose to leave the chill behind to find warming sunshine, perfect for winding down after the festive season has come to an end.

If this sounds like your kind of January, consider Goa, which remains a hit during this month for much the same reason as December: think hot and sunny weather, ripe for lying on the beach or exploring the local resorts.

Looking further south, the beaches and backwaters of Kerala, are also very inviting in January, which is a great time to visit before it gets too hot and sticky from February onwards. Much like Goa, it is beautifully sunny and the sea is delightful in January.

Staying in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is a super stylish option with so many incredible oceanfront properties oozing charm and sophistication in hot, sunny conditions. January marks the start of the dry season here, so you can bank on high temperatures and generally dry days.

While Mauritius is also an Indian Ocean companion, its location nearly 2,000 miles southwest of the Maldives and south of the equator means that January sits in the wet season. Don’t let this put you off though: showers move on quickly leaving dry, hot and sunny weather in their wake.

Over in Southeast Asia, resorts such as Phuket in southern Thailand offer very hot and sunny conditions, perfect for making the most of the famed beaches, as well as a wide range of places to stay for all tastes and budgets.

We know not everyone likes it hot hot, so for a sunshine break without any crazy heat or humidity, Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands promises ample sunshine (seven hours per day, compared with two in the UK at the same time) and comfortable weather, with highs of around 19°C. Do seek out a heated pool if you think you want to swim, however.

Another great option for those not too fussed about the beach or high temperatures is cosmopolitan Cape Town in South Africa. Ascend Table Mountain, visit Robben Island and go penguin spotting under an incredible 11 hours of sunshine each day and warm daily highs of about 25°C.

Top winter sun holidays in February 2023/2024

  1. Maldives
  2. Chiang Mai, Thailand
  3. Goa, India
  4. Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain
  5. Cape Town, South Africa
  6. Dominican Republic
  7. Tamarindo, Costa Rica
  8. Majorca, Balearic Islands, Spain
  9. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
  10. Grenada

With half term and Valentine’s Day in one month, there’s no shortage of excuses to book a winter sun trip away in February. Once again, the real heat and long, sunny days are found closer to the equator in the likes of Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean.

Big hitters like the Maldives, Thailand and Goa in India remain at the top of the list for their almost unbroken sunshine records in February.

Both the Maldives and the mountain city of Chiang Mai in northern Thailand see their sunniest time of the year in February, and Goa isn’t far behind.

All three destinations also bask in high temperatures as well as heat and humidity, ensuring things are hot, sunny and lapped by warm water where applicable.

Heading west, the Caribbean island nations of the Dominican Republic and Spice Isle of Grenada are deep into their dry seasons by this time, guaranteeing some pretty spectacular weather that was made for anyone wanting to recline and relax on a beach holiday.

Central and South America don’t disappoint either, with both Costa Rica’s Pacific coast haven of Tamarindo and the throbbing heart of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, offering dry, sunny, summery weather; ideal for exploring, hiking, beaching and just enjoying.

No winter sun rundown would be complete without a mention of the Canary Islands and Gran Canaria is back in the spotlight in February. Think Bournemouth in August and you’re about as close to imagining what conditions are like there at this time, including a healthy seven hours of sunshine per day and warming daily highs in the low twenties.

Over in the Med, Majorca is the stand-out destination, thanks to its share of sunshine, which is greater than the likes of Greece or Italy. Just remember it isn’t hot in February, so any winter sun break to the Balearics should feature activities centred around culture and adventure, not so much the beach.

“City Winter” annual searches and “City Things to Do” during winter were taken from Google Keywords. “City Winter” annual searches were recorded as annual results for each keyword. “City things to do” were taken as winter searches (from December, January, and February) for each keyword.

Average nightly hotel costs were taken from Kayak by calculating the average costs of hotels from December, January, and February. All currency conversions were made on the 28th of October 2022.

The ‘Winter Holiday Score’ was created by giving each factor a normalized rank and then combining these scores. US cities were included in the global ranking. A separate ranking was also created for US cities in isolation.

Winter sun of Stalingrad | Pravmir

The battle lasted more than half a year. In the summer of 1942, 430,000 Nazis and 386,000 Red Army soldiers clashed near Stalingrad. In November, about 900,000 invaders and more than a million Soviet fighters and commanders were already fighting on Volga soil. Away from Berlin, they fought to win the war.

The national idea cannot appear as a Homunculus, it cannot be deduced by laboratory means. They manifest themselves organically, in the character of the people, in their destiny. And for Russia, the national idea has been expressed for a thousand years in one word, which we write with a capital letter. That word is Victory. It is impossible when we are drowning in strife, in the war of ambitions, in the struggle for someone’s rating.

Let’s think about it: for more than half a century there has been no city called Stalingrad on the map of the country. Nevertheless, this name sounds in different languages and is even reflected in the toponymy of many European capitals, starting with Paris.

Because Stalingrad is not just an old name for a city on the Volga. This is the place of the greatest battle of the twentieth century, when for our country the question was, like Shakespeare’s: “To be or not to be?”.

Soviet soldiers storm the house in Stalingrad, February 1943

In February, the end of a months-long confrontation on the Volga, where the armed forces of the two great powers were concentrated, took place. History has never known such a large-scale and fierce confrontation. How much iron does the Volgograd land store today!

The artist Vereshchagin, who saw many battles in the 19th century, has a textbook painting: “The Apotheosis of War”. Stalingrad was the apotheosis of the bloodiest war in the history of mankind – World War II.

Already near Moscow, the enemy felt the power of Russian weapons. I felt that the political disintegration of the USSR, which Hitler counted on, would not take place.

But after the victory near Moscow, there were defeats in 1942, when the war took on a protracted character, and rivalry on the battlefields, in diplomacy and in the field of the military industry continued at an unprecedented level of tension. Before Stalingrad, everyone understood: the scales of History can swing in any direction.

Which hero of Stalingrad should be named first? Lieutenant General, future Marshal Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov, commander of the 62nd Army, stood to death in Stalingrad. The true heir to Suvorov glory, the general, who was idolized by the soldiers. A bright personality: the writer Vsevolod Vishnevsky knew him well, who left detailed notes about the war days.

Command post of the 62nd Army: Chief of Staff of the Army N. I. Krylov, Army Commander V. I. Chuikov, member of the Military Council K. A. Gurov, commander of the 13th Guards. SD A. I. Rodimtsev, December 1942.

For six months the soldiers of the 62nd fought on the streets of the destroyed Stalingrad, on the open bridgeheads near the Volga. The headquarters of Chuikov’s army was almost on the line of trenches. They didn’t back down. In Chuikov’s army they said: “For us, the soldiers and commanders of the 62nd Army, there is no land beyond the Volga! We have stood and will stand to the death! “I swear: either I die in Stalingrad, or I defend it!” Chuikov said.

There is no superfluous panache here, although Chuikov understood that the army needed slogans as well as daily bread. In these words – the whole essence of the Battle of Stalingrad, a six-month confrontation.

When the German field marshal Paulus was captured, he asked: “Where was the command post of the 62nd Army?” They answered him: “On Mamayev Kurgan.” “Intelligence informed us, but we could not believe in such impudence!” exclaimed the German field marshal. Chuikov did the impossible for Victory.

In April 1943, the army received the rank of Guards. With her – from the 8th Guards – Chuikov will reach Berlin. These are Chuikov’s guards – Yegorov and Kantaria – will hoist the Red Banner over the Reichstag.

When in 1967 the memorial complex on Mamaev Kurgan was opened in Volgograd, Chuikov was not given a word for a long time. Brezhnev, Kosygin have already spoken… And the people were still waiting for the hero-marshal to give the floor. And the very first words of Vasily Ivanovich Chuikov made the courageous front-line soldiers shed tears: “My brothers, Stalingraders! . .”.

According to the marshal’s will, he was buried on Mamaev Kurgan – in 1982. He wrote:

“… FEELING THE APPROXIMATION OF THE END OF LIFE, I IN FULL CONSCIOUSNESS MAKE A REQUEST – AFTER MY DEATH, BURY THE ASSELS ON MAMAYEV KURGAN IN STALINGRAD, WHERE IT WAS ORGANIZED BY ME ON SEPTEMBER 12, 1942 YEARS MY COMMAND POINT. FROM THAT PLACE THE ROAR OF THE VOLGA WATERS, volleys of guns AND THE PAIN OF THE STALINGRAD RUINS ARE HEARED, THOUSANDS OF FIGHTERS THAT I COMMANDED ARE BURNED THERE. FIGHTERS OF THE SOVIETS, TAKE AN EXAMPLE FROM THE GUARDS AND WORKERS OF STALINGRAD! VICTORY WILL BE FOR YOU! JULY 27, 1981. V. CHUIKOV.

Marshal Chuikov is buried where he stood to his death. Where his comrades-in-arms who fell in Stalingrad are buried. Thousands of people came to say goodbye to Marshal Chuikov. On the monument to the marshal, the words are carved: “There is a city in Russia to which my heart is given. It went down in history like Stalingrad.

Commander of the 62nd Army V.I. SD S. S. Guryev. Stalingrad, Krasny Oktyabr plant, January 3, 1943

How can one not remember Yakov Petrovich Pavlov? The whole country knew the name of this sergeant. Together with three fighters, he drove the Germans out of a four-story building in the center of Stalingrad. And this house, shelled from all sides, became an impregnable fortress for two months.

There were no homeowners in the USSR, but in Stalingrad everyone called this building Pavlov’s house. Pavlov (and this is a great happiness!) returned from the war alive, with the Star of the Hero.

Pavlov’s house after the end of the Battle of Stalingrad

Everyone knows the glorious name of the sniper Vasily Grigoryevich Zaitsev. For a month in Stalingrad, he destroyed 225 enemy soldiers and officers, including 11 snipers.

Zaitsev’s duel with one of the best German snipers, Major Köning, who arrived in Stalingrad with the task of destroying Zaitsev, went down in history. Zaitsev shot the “German bird”. The rifle of the German major is in the Moscow Museum of the Armed Forces.

In January 1943, shortly before the Stalingrad victory, Zaitsev was seriously wounded, for a while he lost his sight. He was also lucky to see the Victory in 1945. Guard captain Zaitsev died in 1991, in Kyiv. But only 14 years later, Zaitsev’s will was fulfilled – and his ashes were reburied at the Mamaev Kurgan in Volgograd.

Sniper Hero of the Soviet Union Vasily Zaitsev (left) explains the task to the newcomers. Stalingrad. December 1942

Senior Lieutenant Ruben Ruiz Ibarruri, the son of the famous “Passionaria”, Dolores Ibarruri, fought in Stalingrad. His mother languished in the Francoist dungeons, and his son was taken to the USSR. In Stalingrad, he commanded a machine gun company. More than once raised the fighters in counterattacks.

The attack on 24 August 1942 was fatal. The enemy was thrown back, the Germans left a hundred people killed on the battlefield. But the commander was badly wounded. A few days later, Senior Lieutenant Ibarruri died in the hospital. He did not see Stalingrad cleared of the enemy, but Russia honors the memory of the brave Spaniard to this day.

You can list the heroes of Stalingrad for a long time. It was then that the fair concept of “mass heroism” was established in the Russian language. Half a million front-line soldiers during the war wore the medal “For the Defense of Stalingrad”.

The last page in the history of the Battle of Stalingrad is Operation Ring, carefully prepared by the General Staff and Headquarters. The decisive role in the offensive operation was played by the troops of the Don Front of the future Marshal, and then Colonel General K.K. Rokossovsky.

250 thousand selected Nazi troops were surrounded, in the cauldron. The result of the operation is the defeat of the southern and northern groupings of German troops, the capture of Field Marshal Paulus in the basement of the Stalingrad department store, a complete Victory.

German soldiers captured near Stalingrad

Paulus was taken to Rokossovsky. On February 2, Headquarters representative Marshal of Artillery Voronov and Rokossovsky sent a report to Headquarters:

“Fulfilling your order, the troops of the Don Front at 16.00 2.2. actions in the city of Stalingrad and in the region of Stalingrad ceased.

Here it is, victory! Stalingrad calmed down, in which artillery did not stop for half a year.

From 91 to 110 thousand enemy soldiers and officers were taken prisoner. The Third Reich did not know such a defeat. After Stalingrad, it became clear to millions of people around the world that the Soviet Union would not lose the war… And even in Germany, only adventurers were now thinking about the complete enslavement of Russia. The tide of the war has turned. From now on, the front moved to the West.

Stalingrad also influenced the military-political plans of the allies. The importance of the Soviet Union increased dramatically. Two years remained before the fall of Berlin, but it was already impossible not to believe in the Victory. Resistance arose in France, in Poland, in Yugoslavia. Everyone was inspired by Stalingrad. And in the Red Army, the concept of “Stalingrader” meant the ability to win.

The Stalingrad epic can be divided into two halves, unequal in time: the first showed the inflexible stamina of our army. The second is the ability to encircle large enemy groupings and conduct brilliant offensive operations. These are two sides of the Stalingrad medal – and both shocked the world.

In the USA, the Stalingrad victory was celebrated as a holiday. President F.D. Roosevelt sent a letter to the heroic city:

“On behalf of the people of the United States of America, I present this letter to the city of Stalingrad to mark our admiration for its valiant defenders, whose courage, fortitude and selflessness during the siege since September 13, 1942 years to January 31, 1943 will forever inspire the hearts of all free people. Their glorious victory stopped the wave of invasion and became a turning point in the war of the allied nations against the forces of aggression.

The King of Great Britain sent a sword to Stalingrad, on which the inscription was engraved in Russian and English:

“To the citizens of Stalingrad, strong as steel – from King George VI as a token of the deep admiration of the British people.”

And Winston Churchill owns the words:

“Stalingrad itself has become a symbol of the courage and resilience of the Russian people and, at the same time, a symbol of the greatest human suffering. This symbol will be preserved for centuries.”

Many poets have written about the great battle. But best of all about the Stalingrad victory, about its role in the fate of the Great Patriotic War, Alexander Trifonovich Tvardovsky said in verse, a poet whom the soldiers read all four war years:0106
And, sensing death, the enemy fled from us,
Driven back by our right hand weapons.

That was a pledge, a pledge of pledges,
That we will calm him down forever,
But Don, Donets, but the old Dnieper and Bug –
Our relatives were rivers.

In the steppe, in the mountains, we brought death to him
And in the sea they overturned from land.
But the sorrow of the war trampled earth,
Our souls tormented our native land.

Sorrow, patience, feat, victory, Motherland – all this is Stalingrad. A word that has sounded all over the world. The allies, who closely followed the events on the Volga, tried to comprehend Russia, its soul.

City center of Stalingrad, February 2, 1943

Stalingrad taught many to love Russia. Before the war, only the left-wing press wrote about the Soviet Union without hatred. And here:

“The Russian soldier is taciturn, more restrained than the British and Americans are used to. In intimate relationships, he is more impulsive, confident, and emotional…and in everyday life, he is more patient. He smiles less, rarely laughs, sighs more. Cynicism is not in his nature. His favorite songs “Dugout” and “Let’s smoke” are sad and tender. His thirst for knowledge is indomitable: many even go into battle with a textbook in their pocket… You experience amazing emotions sitting in a Moscow theater in the company of soldiers on leave who came to see the fabulous beauty of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

That’s how he was, a victorious soldier. And this is how the Times correspondent saw him in 1943. It is a pity that another stereotype of attitude towards the Soviet fighter soon won in popular culture. In the films of the Cold War, we see the bestial martinet.

The peoples did not save the military brotherhood. But these misfires of history happened later, and in February 1943 our grandfathers breathed freely – perhaps for the first time in a year and a half.

Hungry for the Winter Sun Malta

During the long winter months, I always fantasize about the sun coming back to full power. It even seems to me that I can completely forget about how it is especially hot here in the south of Spain. In any case, regardless of where we live, we all crave the winter sun. In this article, I would like to write a little about one of my favorite places for winter and sun – Malta.

© istock/Allard1

Sitting in the middle of the Mediterranean, it’s easy to forget about Malta, and it’s a place that not many people think about. However, three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, an endless amount of incredible history and an average annual temperature of 20°C make Malta easy to love!

Beaches

© istock/Meinzahn

Every winter, to enjoy the sun, you need to have some great, uncrowded beaches where visitors can soak up so much missed sun! Malta has some stunning beaches and seaside locations, and two of the most popular are the Blue Lagoon location and Golden Bay Beach. Unlike the winter sun in the Canary Islands, the beaches here are golden white sand and the water is fantastically clear. In particular, Golden Bay Beach is known for the breathtaking sunset you can catch on a clear evening.

Diving

© istock/Wojciech-P

In addition to great weather and beaches, Malta is one of the best dive sites in all of Europe, with warm (ish) clear waters and several great wreck dive sites. It’s a fairly cheap dive site, and although it doesn’t have as much marine life as Bali or Mexico, diving here is still exciting and fun. One of the best wreck dives is the P-29 wreck that sank in 2007.

History

Due to the strategic position that Malta occupies in the middle of the Mediterranean, it changed hands and was the focus of the military. It really shows in the number of great historical buildings that visitors can see on this island.

Many sea fortresses, churches, cathedrals, town halls and other important buildings are hundreds of years old, and some even longer.

The world continued its relatively warm start to 2022, with February ranking as the seventh-warmest February in the climate record.

Last month also wrapped up an extremely warm December – February season for the planet, according to scientists from NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information.

Here’s more from NOAA’s latest monthly global climate report:

Climate by the numbers

February 2022 | Season (December 2021 – February 2022)

The February global land and ocean surface temperature was 1. 46 degrees F (0.81 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average, ranking as the seventh-warmest February in the climate record.

Regionally, Asia, Europe and South America saw average temperatures that ranked among their eight-warmest Februaries on record. North America was the only continent to have a below-average February temperature.

Looking at the three-month season, the global surface temperature was 1.51 degrees F (0.84 of a degree C) above the 20th-century average of 53.8 degrees F (12.1 degrees C), tying with 2015 as the world’s fifth-warmest such period on record.

December through February was also the Northern Hemisphere’s sixth-warmest meteorological winter and the Southern Hemisphere’s seventh-warmest meteorological summer on record.

A map of the world plotted with some of the most significant climate events that occurred during February 2022. Please see the story below as well as more details in the report summary from NOAA NCEI at http://bit. ly/Global202202. offsite link (NOAA NCEI)

Other notable takeaways from the report

  • Polar sea ice was scant. Antarctic sea ice extent (coverage) for the month was the smallest on record — 830,000 square miles (29.6%) below average — surpassing the previous smallest February extent set in 2017. The February 2022 Arctic sea ice extent was 4.5% below average and the 14th-smallest February extent in the 44-year record.
  • A warm start to 2022 so far. The year-to-date (January and February) global surface temperature was the sixth highest on record. According to NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook, it is virtually certain (> 99.0%) that 2022 will rank among the 10-warmest years on record.
  • Tropical cyclone activity saw a significant uptick. The globe had an above-average number of tropical cyclones in February, with a total of eight named storms, four of which intensified to become hurricanes (also known as cyclones or typhoons in parts of the Eastern Hemisphere). The South Indian Ocean was the most active ocean basin with five named storms, tying with February 2000 and February 2007 for the most named storms since 1981.

Bay Area residents could expect the uncommonly warm, windy February weather to linger into the coming weekend, meteorologists said Wednesday.

Record or near-record high temperatures in the 70s — about 10 to 20 degrees higher than usual — were expected across the Bay Area through at least Friday before cooling off toward the end of the weekend and into next week.

Temperatures in downtown Oakland set a record Wednesday after reaching 75 degrees, breaking the old high of 74 degrees set on Feb. 9, 2006.

“It’s not really hot weather,” said Ryan Walbrun, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in the Bay Area. “But in February, in the middle of winter,” it’s unusual, he said.

The warm, dry weather is the product of a stubborn high-pressure front that’s camped out over the California coast and isn’t likely to budge for several more days. Offshore winds, more common in summer and fall, began blowing early Wednesday morning, with a gust reaching 60 mph in the North Bay mountains and winds in the upper 30 mph range in the East Bay hills and along the San Mateo County coast.

Overnight saw wind gusts around 40 mph, isolated up to 60 mph over the highest North Bay Mtns, w/ dry relative humidity.

As offshore winds prevail, conditions are forecast return once again tonight at higher elevations of North & East Bay. #dontBeThatSpark #CAwx pic.twitter.com/HqTWBQjtc9

— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) February 9, 2022

The National Weather Service has not issued a red flag or fire warning — mainly because vegetation is still moist from October and December rains — but is advising people to be cautious of sparking fires which could spread more quickly in the dry, gusty winds. A vegetation fire sparked Wednesday near Stinson Beach in Marin County, but it was quickly addressed by firefighters.

“February is usually one of the wetter months but we are now in excess of a month without appreciable rain,” Walbrun said. “If you bring record warm temperatures and higher than usual winds, you will get increased fire danger. Fuels still have moisture but each day without rain, you lose a little bit more of that.”

Cal Fire officials said the warm weather, as well as the 700-acre Colorado Fire in Big Sur in January, serve as reminders that the California wildfire season never really ends.

“We have this misnomer that in winter fire season ends,” said Jon Heggie, a Cal Fire battalion chief. “The weather we’re experiencing is not normal but it’s not unheard of, either. It definitely adds to potential for ignitions.”

Since he joined Cal Fire as a seasonal firefighter in 1991, Heggie said, unusual weather events like December’s record rainfall and the current spell of rainless days have become increasingly common, he said, making fire season more unpredictable.

“It makes it great for the flowers but is concerning for us,” he said. “We’re wondering what the results will be as we get closer to springtime. Will we see an increase in fire activity?”

Mike Pechner, an independent meteorologist who lives in Cordelia, said the warm weather and the extended lack of rainfall had a devastating effect on the Sierra snowpack, which serves as a water bank for California, feeding reservoirs as it melts, typically in the spring and into the summer.

But warmer temperatures cause the snow to melt earlier, he said, still pouring into reservoirs, where it’s drawn down but not saving water for the dry season.

“This February is dry so far and of great concern because at this point, the snowpack should be increasing, and it is not,” he said. “We’re actually falling behind. The snowpack is about near average for this time of year but every day we go without snow, it’s going below average.”

At Donner Summit, Pechner said, there were 120 inches of snow on the ground on Jan. 5. By Wednesday morning half of that had melted.

“That’s a huge drop,” he said.

The UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab, which reported record snowfall in December, tweeted about a new record Wednesday — the longest consecutive period in winter without precipitation — 32 days, and 32 without snow.

Record broken: Our lack of storms over the last month has now led to the longest consecutive period without measurable #precipitation during meteorological winter (WY 1971-2022) with 32 since our last #snowfall.

The previous record was 31 days in 1990. 1/2#CAwx #CAwater pic.twitter.com/8Ht4lbTETV

— UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab (@UCB_CSSL) February 9, 2022

But there is hope for the snowpack. The weather is expected to turn cooler by the start of next week and a weather system known as “an inside slider” could move down the Sierra next Tuesday or Wednesday, bringing much-needed snow along with temperatures that will slow, or even stop, the meltoff, Pechner said. It’s not expected to bring rain to the Bay Area, though high temperatures should return to the 50s and 60s.

The Bay Area’s next hope for rain, meteorologists agree, should come near the end of the month. Pechner said forecasts show rain is possible around Presidents’ Day with another couple of storms following. None of those appear to be big storms, he said, but they are still welcome.

“We just might see enough rain and snow to save the month of February,” he said.

Weather in Dubai in February

Immediately after entering the plane, with the first rays of the bright Arabian sun, it becomes clear that you have arrived in the summer. The UAE is dominated by a dry subtropical climate and enjoys warm weather throughout the year. For those who suffer from high blood pressure and do not tolerate the heat, it will seem more than comfortable. The absence of debilitating heat and unbearable stuffiness provoked by an increased level of humidity favors an active pastime. You can move through the streets not as before, in small dashes, but measuredly and leisurely, not each time trying to cool off in an air-conditioned bus stop or cafe. The average daily air temperature, according to meteorologists, is about +24 °C. On some days it rises to +25..+26 °C. When planning a long stay outdoors on clear days, do not neglect sunscreen. Although ultraviolet radiation is not as powerful as before, nevertheless it is quite enough to get a burn.

Some days the weather is feverish with rain. The total amount of precipitation in this month is small, but in the context of the whole year it is maximum. According to statistics, there are 3 to 5 rainy days in February. In general, for these parts they are a rarity, so if you find them, consider that this is a kind of attraction. In addition, the rains are quite warm and do not cause any unpleasant sensations. When packing your suitcase for a trip, do not forget to put long-sleeved clothes in it, such as: a windbreaker or a light jacket, a thin sweater or raglan. They will come in handy when visiting shopping malls and traveling to the subway, where air conditioners are running around the clock, as well as during evening walks. The fact is that with the onset of darkness, the air cools rapidly: on average, 15..+16 °C is recorded, but sometimes it is +16..+18 °C. An unpleasant feature inherent in February is sandstorms. True, they do not happen often, but when they do, they certainly upset the plans of tourists. So, in 2012, such an anomaly disrupted the famous Trade Festival. The Global Village had to close for several days. One can imagine the disappointment of those whose main purpose of arrival was shopping.

What to do in Dubai in February?

Despite the fact that the February weather is far from ideal, crowds of foreigners flock to Dubai at the end of winter. The most attractive emirate for tourism greets its guests with unfailing hospitality, offering all the best that the UAE has to offer: generously golden sun, amazing white-sand beaches, exciting entertainment, marvels of engineering and advanced technologies. A separate line should be highlighted shopping, which exceeds all the wildest expectations of fashionistas and women of fashion: this month, the final stage of grandiose sales called “Dubai Shopping Festival” takes place.

Beach holiday

Dubai is famous for its endless strip of virgin sandy beaches with superbly developed infrastructure, high levels of cleanliness and ecology. However, pampered holidaymakers, most likely, will not like a beach holiday in February, since the water in the Persian Gulf cools down to +18. .+21 °C. Swimming in it is pretty invigorating, you hardly want to swim for a long time: you plunge and immediately bask on the shore. By the way, the weather is very conducive to sunbathing, and if you do it every day, then you are guaranteed an impeccable tanning effect.

For “insurance”, some tourists settle in hotels that have beach clubs on their territory. A few meters from the water’s edge – a concentration of pools of various sizes and depths. This is convenient because if the sea is stormy, you can indulge in water pleasures. And for those who are on vacation with children, this option is most acceptable. If accommodation in hotels 4 and 5 * is not affordable, for an additional fee, entry to private beaches becomes available to everyone.

Entertainment and excursions

For fans of a variety of excursions, Dubai in February is a real blessing. The most comfortable air temperature allows you to take an active part in educational tours even in the daytime. And this means that you will be able to see much more than during the high holiday season. The first thing that strikes everyone who sets foot on the fertile land of the emirate is skyscrapers that outdid the most famous buildings in the world in design and luxury. They are champions not only in height, but in their “saturation”. In order to view all the skyscrapers at the same time, purchase a ticket to the “on the top” observation deck, located on the 124th floor of the 828-meter Burj Khalifa tower. But keep in mind that you need to do this in advance – at least 3-5 days in advance, since there are a lot of people who want to. Another building that attracts the attention of the tourist public is the 7 * Burj Al Arab hotel in the prestigious Jumeirah area. To get there, you have to spend a lot of money. The easiest way to marvel at its chic decoration is to book a tour with a guest dinner. Another masterpiece of architectural and engineering thought is the twin towers Emirates Park Towers 376 m, considered one of the highest hotels in the world. “Catchers” for beautiful views must certainly ride around Dubai at night, illuminated by a million “cosmic” lights.

If it did not exist in reality, one could say that this is the city of the future. In addition to seeing the skyscrapers in Dubai, you will find numerous entertainment centers, water parks, golf courses, nightclubs, as well as restaurants and cafes with multinational cuisine. In February, shopping is of great interest, shopping centers offer significant discounts to customers as part of the “Shopping Festival” that started in January. Among them, for example, Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Deira City Center and Wafi City Mall. No less exciting is the process of shopping in authentic oriental bazaars and markets. To admire the city “from the water”, head straight to Creek Bay, where for a nominal fee you will be taken for a ride on a traditional Arab schooner “dhow”. To test the thrill, we recommend taking part in races on wild sand dunes.

Holidays and festivals

Except for the “Shopping festival” which takes place on the first few days of the month,

in February, the Dubai Tennis Open is sponsored by the Prime Minister. Another sporting event is the Desert Classic organized by the Emirates Golf Club. Also in February you can find exhibitions and music concerts.

What are the prices for holidays in Dubai in February?

Mallorca weather in February

It is not a secret that trips to Mediterranean resorts are in high demand in the classic season of holidays – summer and autumn. But in winter they languish in the shackles of solitude, sinking into hibernation and dreaming of departed hot days, splashing warm waves and carefree tourists who come for a rest endless stream. It is believed that there is absolutely nothing to do at this time of year. But is it true or not? Let’s talk about the weather in Palma De Mallorca in February.

The weather in Mallorca Spain in February

Going to Mallorca in the last third of winter, you have to realize that it is not Thailand or Egypt – in T-shirts, shorts and oil shales at this time you will not walk here. Like the rest of Spain, it’s the coldest part of the year. The only thing is that the Mallorca weather in February is much warmer than in some mainland cities, so down jackets and thick sweaters are superfluous. An adequate set of clothes includes a coat, a windbreaker (for clear days), several long-sleeved sweaters or raglans, jeans, and sneakers. You may need something else to wear. In this case, when packing your suitcase, navigate to the daytime air temperature of +13 … +15 ° C, given the high humidity level, where the perception of cold is usually exacerbated. As the weather forecast shows, the general dynamics is such that on especially successful days the mercury column sets records, jumping to +17 … +18°C. In general, there is a lot of rain in February: according to long-term observations of forecasters, the number of “wet” days reaches 13 (which, however, is 2 days less than in January).

However, the periods of cloudy weather in Mallorca in February are much less than sunny or cloudless. So walking through the patriarchal Spanish villages and picturesque provincial towns is a good idea this month! It’s also the nature that pushes it in turning it into a real paradise garden. At this time, inquisitive tourists flock here to enjoy a delightful natural performance – the lush flowering of several thousand almond trees, covering the island with a delicate white-pink haze and filling fields, forests, and parks with an invisible magical scent. For Mallorca, this is a truly remarkable event, as from time immemorial, the almond nut has been considered its symbol and a major source of income. The good news is that there has been a noticeable increase in the length of daylight hours so that you can have a rich and entertaining holiday. But it should be kept in mind that with the onset of dusk it gets very cold: in the evenings the thermometer column is expected to drop to 7-8 degrees with a “plus” sign. So if you plan to stay outside until dark, take care of a warmer jacket.

What’s interesting about Palma De Mallorca weather in February?

Mallorca is a wonderful Spanish island with an exceptionally mild climate, lush beauty of flowers and lush greenery. The pearl of the Balearic archipelago, Mallorca, will regain the taste for life lost in the long winter months, charge with positive emotions, and at the same time improve health. In February you can leisurely go sightseeing, get acquainted with national traditions, and enjoy hot fun at the grand carnival.

Beach recreation

The Mallorca February weather is not so good for the sun and sea bathers. The water is almost icy – about +14 ° C, and the air is very cool to decide to take off your outer clothing and put on a bathing suit. In addition, the uncomfortable winds are often blown causing only one desire – as soon as possible to hood yourself. The beaches are deserted, with no signs of infrastructure, and quite unlike what tourists see in summer. However, the fans of the atmosphere of graceful silence and tranquility will like this environment and will enjoy Mallorca weather in February.

There is nobody around. It seems that all this picturesque coast with overgrown pine groves, impregnable steep mountains, secluded azure bays and coves belong only to you and no one else. The promenades at the water’s edge are not only pleasant but also useful. Inhalation of the salty breeze, mixed with aromas of wild herbs and needles, has a strengthening effect on the immune system, calms the nerves, and promises a good sleep. Take a note of the paved pedestrian capital embankment, framed on both sides by slender rows of statues palms. It’s a great place to go for a walk at any time of day. Among other possible activities, we would like to mention a snow-white yacht cruise, which allows you to get to where it is very difficult to reach the shore, and fishing by boat with access to the open sea. The weather in Palma Mallorca in february is good for such a trip.

Entertainment and Excursions

Even in the low season, the island remains accessible to its guests. Just a few hours on a fast liner leaving Barcelona and you are already in its arms. Along with its breathtaking scenery, Mallorca boasts a challenging, turbulent history and, as a result, a host of centuries-old architectural and religious monuments. In winter, when the sightseeing trails are free from crowds, it is a pleasure to see them. There are three optimal options: take part in a group tour, use the services of a qualified guide, or rent a car to explore everything by yourself. Whichever of them you choose, you are guaranteed a mass of unforgettable experiences cause weather in Mallorca in February is pretty good for that.

Ancient Moorish palaces in Arabic style, rich royal residences, monasteries with relics of revered saints, Gothic cathedrals – what kind of buildings can you find here? This is because for several hundred years Mallorca has been the centre of a mix of cultures and generations. The representatives of animal and plant life deserve special attention. In Palma Nova built park “Marineland”, which collected many species of marine mammals, the capital is trying to visit the “Palma Aquarium”, in Palma Sineu interesting mini-zoo “Natura Parc”, and in Bunyola – botanical garden “Jardins de Alfabia”. For cycling enthusiasts, we recommend areas such as Saurier, where you can meet many like-minded people. Learning to play golf is a great way to diversify your leisure time. Today, there are 13 professional golf courses on the island. The evenings are perfect for tasting national dishes with a glass of good wine (there is mass cultivation of grapes and production of the wine). So if you like trekking, then Palma Mallorca weather February will be suitable for you.

Holidays and festivals

On the 3rd, some villages have a rather unusual St. Bly’s feast. On this day, locals smear their houses with holy oil, believing that it helps to avoid angina. The cathedrals also illuminate dried fruits which are eaten for preventive purposes. On the 5th of February, they celebrate the day of St. Agda – the patroness of the home. The mistresses set the festive table, and the crowned young piglet with fried potatoes is the specialty of this remarkable day. February 27 commemorates the nun Sor Francina Sirer, who was named a saint by order of the Pope. A week before the beginning of Lent, almost every city hosts colorful carnival processions accompanied by dancing, music, and public outing.

What are the prices for a holiday in Mallorca in February?

The inability to swim in the sea in February is more than offset by the low prices of hotel accommodation and organised tours. On average, a holiday costs 1.5-2.5 times cheaper than a high season peak. So if you want to learn more about the island of Mallorca and avoid crowds of tourists, February is a great option for a trip. But don’t forget to bring warm clothes, as Palma De Mallorca weather February may not be the most pleasant for tourists.

What To Do & The Best Places To Visit

Discover the best reasons to visit Mallorca in winter, as well as some of the things you can do and see while you’re there.

If you’re considering visiting Mallorca in winter, great decision! The months between November and February make a fantastic time to go to the Balearics. Mallorca’s mild climate and virtually non-existent crowds in winter mean that it is one of the best places to find winter sun in Europe.

Cheaper flights to Mallorca

Your money will go a lot further than you think in Mallorca in winter. While the entrance fees to most attractions stay the same price all year round, visiting Mallorca during the off-season will save you a fortune on flights.

A quick search of Skyscanner shows a return flight from London to Mallorca in August is 47% more expensive than average, while the price of similar flights to Mallorca in January is 40% cheaper than average! Most no-frills airlines fly to Palma de Mallorca from across Europe, so you’re bound to find a bargain.

Take your pick of wonderful accommodation in Mallorca

If you’re a first-time visitor to Mallorca, you’ll be spoilt for choice of accommodation. And this is even more true in winter! Visiting in the off-season means you get the pick of the bunch when it comes to accommodation before they’re snapped up by the summer crowds. Choose from the best rated hotels in Palma, to the most beautiful lodges in the heart of the island.

Hotel Can Cota in Selva treats guests to some incredible views

Hotel Can Cota* in Selva is a great example of where your money goes further. It’s a boutique hotel set in picturesque countryside, overlooked by the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The family-run hotel has just 7 rooms, making it the perfect place to unwind after a busy day exploring the island. Guests are free to enjoy the hotel’s many facilities, from the games room with table tennis table, to the expansive gardens and infinity pool. For those interested in gastronomy,  the breakfast is made to order and you can choose from all manner of cooked food, pastries and fresh fruit. You can even wake up early and nab the outside table for breakfast with a view! Hotel Can Cota* is my personal pick for places to stay in Mallorca, outside of Palma.

Disclaimer: I paid full price to stay at Can Cota* – I just really enjoyed my stay and am happy to recommend it!

Visit the lesser-known Mallorca holiday destinations

In the summer, visitors to Mallorca flock to the coast and beaches to cool off from the blistering heat. That’s not necessary in winter, thanks to the cooler temperatures. Instead, winter makes a great time to explore the Mallorca towns in the centre of the island.

Selva

Selva is a small village set at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range. It’s relatively unknown, meaning there’s not many ‘traditional’ tourist sights, but that’s what’s so loveable about it! You can use it as a base to explore, enjoy walks through the historic alleys or simply take it all in from your hotel’s terrace.

Selva in Mallorca makes the perfect winter getaway

S’Albufera Nature Reserve

S’Albufera is an area of wetland on the east coast of Mallorca, popular among birdwatchers, nature lovers and those with a passion for wildlife and sustainable travel on Mallorca. While it’s open all year round, one of the benefits of visiting S’Albufera in the winter is the possibility to see many bird species that use the park as an escape from the cold weather in northern Europe. Among others, you’ll see large populations of ducks, herons and starlings.

Mallorca winter weather is not too hot, but not too cold

Mallorca is a great place for winter sun as it’s one of the warmest places in Spain in winter. Of course, the average temperature highs between November to February in Mallorca are colder than summer at 15-19°c, but I’ll bet you that’s warmer than home.

Between November and February, Mallorca averages 7 hours of daily sunshine and approximately 47mm of rainfall. Compare these figures to the rest of Europe (where there’s much less sunshine and much more rain) and you’re in for a treat!

Thanks to Holiday Weather for providing the data in this section.

The weather in Mallorca in winter is warm enough to grow Seville oranges!

Visit famous Mallorcan attractions without the crowds

One of the major benefits of visiting Mallorca in December or other winter months is the virtually non-existent queues for some of the top attractions. You can take your time exploring Palma Cathedral, enjoy a peaceful visit to the Drach Caves and enjoy the Alcudia Old Town without the crowds.

During the summer months, the beaches are full of tourists, but you could almost have them all to yourselves in winter. If that’s not reason enough to go, I don’t know what is!

Find fantastic photo opportunities on a winter visit to Mallorca

If you search for images of Mallorca online, you’re bound to be met with thousands of photos of blue skies and yellow sands. Yet, the photo opportunities in the winter are even more spectacular! Imagine coming across Palma Cathedral in the snow – wouldn’t that make a wonderful and unique photo? Or capturing the mist as it forms over the hills in Valldemossa one wintry morning – beautiful, huh? One thing’s for sure… you certainly couldn’t take photos like these in the summer!

Seeing the mist in Valldemossa is easier in winter

Enjoy the Christmas season in Mallorca

Traditionally a religious country, Spain does Christmas well. And Mallorca? It does it really well. The streets are filled with beautiful lights, the churches host incredible nativity scenes, and cheery locals spill out onto the streets to celebrate their favourite season. Even between Christmas and New Year (one of my favourite times to visit Mallorca!) the festive markets stay open to help the locals prepare for the Three Kings Day or epiphany. It really is the most wonderful time of the year!

Christmas in Palma de Mallorca is a special time to visit

Take advantage of the empty roads when hiring a car

If you’re considering hiring a car in Mallorca, the roads in winter will be relatively empty thanks to the lack of other tourists. This should really help boost your confidence when driving in an unfamiliar country, or if you’re not used to driving along the windy mountain roads in Mallorca. They can be very tight!

The Canary Islands are renowned for their year-round celebrations and fiestas, with a calendar of events ranging from deeply religious festivals to hedonistic, day-long celebrations. Among the most popular of Canary Island holidays for visitors to attend are Carnaval in February, when drinking and dancing take over the streets of Santa Cruz, and the June religious reenactments of La Orotava’s Corpus Christi observances.

Three Kings Festival

While the rest of the world is recovering from Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve, and attempting to stick to their resolutions, the people of the Canary Islands are preparing for the next festival in their calendar – the Three Kings Festival. Los Reyos Magos, as it is known in Spanish, celebrates the Epiphany on the eve of January 5. Parades march through towns and sweet treats and fancy dress are in abundance.

Music Festival of the Canary Islands

One of Europe’s most distinguished classical music festivals welcomes some of the world’s top classical performers to its stage each year from mid-January to mid-February. Stages are set up around the archipelago, with numerous acts playing simultaneously. Now in its 28th year, the festival provides a great alternative to spending the day relaxing on the beach, trekking, or kitesurfing.

Carnaval

March sees the most colorful and most spectacular festival of the archipelago’s calendar occur. Carnaval takes place in February and is one of the best times of the year to visit the Canary Islands. No matter where you go, it is virtually impossible to escape it once in full-swing. The most elaborate celebrations occur in Santa Cruz and Puerto de la Cruz where locals pull out their fancy dress and put away their inhibitions. The dancing, drinking, and downright hedonism goes on for days and gives Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival a run for its money.

Festival of San Juan

June 23 sees Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, celebrate an ancient tradition inherited from the original settlers of the Canary Islands, the Guanches. Unless you know what is going on, you could quite easily think the people have gone a bit mad, as they take cattle down to the sea en masse to wash them. In addition, the Icod people set impressive decorations of flowers alight on campfires.

Corpus Christi Festival

Held in June, the Corpus Christi fiesta celebrates the establishment of La Orotava’s Eucharist (Holy Communion). The town is adorned in multi-colored sand and the community reenacts biblical scenes. The festival get everybody excited, with people of all ages joining the celebration.

Saint Candelaria Festival

The celebration of the Canary Islands’ patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria, is hailed on August 14 and 15. During these two days, many Canarians go on pilgrims to the city of Candelria to pay their respects. The Feast of Saint Candelaria is held on February 2.

Canary Islands – Morocco. February 27-March 10 – Marine practices

…. a sailor who has the opportunity to eat – must be full, a sailor who has the opportunity to rest – must get enough sleep …

27 February

Today the new voyage of the Juliet began. On board: Vladimir Manilov (Bermuda Triangle 2011), Alexander Sebilev, Olga Khan, Andrey Suzdalev and Polina Tarbaeva. Yesterday we successfully swept through Tenerife, were on top, walked through the Martian landscapes among the lava fields. Finally, the correct comparison was born – if the landscapes in Fuertoventura are such that westerns are filmed there, then Star Wars was filmed in Tenerife. The difference is clear.
In the evening, in the company of Viktor Yazykov, pancakes saw off Shrove Tuesday. This morning he went on the “Daughter of the Wind” to a nearby marina to rise, clean the bottom and prepare for the passage to Panama, and at 1120 we started in the Northeast direction. It is not yet clear where we are going today … to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, or even further .. in general, we are going to Morocco, but how, what stages the voyage will take is not yet clear.

1234, 14 knots headwind. We put the steering wheel on the nut and, clinging to the wind, we go on the port tack. Warm. Sun.
2007, we entered the wind shadow of Gran Canaria, removed the sails, we rise to the North, under the engine. Andrei did an excellent job frying tuna, freshly bought in the market in La Gallettas in the morning. North Cape Punta Sardina is 14 miles away. It will be necessary to decide where we are going.
2151, approaching the cape. Most likely we are going to Lanzarote. It’s still a day’s journey.
2226, abeam Punta Sardina. I’m going to Lanzarote. You need to do this while the headwind has a hitch. And how cozy it is in Las Palmas now. It’s within reach of him!

February 28,

0508, coordinates 28*27’8N 015*02’8W.
We continue to climb to the top. Wind up to two points, North. We help ourselves with a motor. One entertainment — to steer. Taxiing skill is acquired in such voyages. Night. Of the landmarks, only a couple of stars in the sky and instruments.
0633 dog watch on dog islands.
0727, “A young woman with purple fingers, Eos, rose from the darkness.”
Fuertoventura sails in the East. The wind is less than two points, we can say that we are very lucky with the weather. A week ago, I could not even dream of such an “elevator” to the top, to the North.
1321, 15 miles to Rubicon Marina. Wind Northwest, two points. We go with a good roll, but on the motor. Sun.
1530, arrived at Rubicon Marina.

We bought groceries, cooked stew, refueled, refueled with water.. cut halyards and sheets… Sasha and Volodya moved the winch… I hung another clock in my cabin so as not to wake up the watch. I dream of making a connection between the cabin and the cockpit, so that at night or during the day, I don’t have to wonder painfully – what’s going on there and not appear in the cockpit for nothing and in my pajamas).

1605, started from Lanzarote. I’m going to Morocco.
1735, under the wind of Lanzarote. There are two days of close-hauled wind ahead. I hope we don’t get too much. “Mushroom” sends surprisingly fickle forecasts – everything changes every day.

1915, passed the traverse of the town of Arrecife. We’ll soon leave Lanzarote.

March 1,

0354, coordinates – 29*01’5N 012*42’8W. Tackling in Morocco, such a hassle! We go to the wind no steeper than 70 degrees and anyway, from time to time we fly into the oncoming wave … Olga and Andrey, courageously do not want to move from the forward cabin to the calmer aft ones. They are now like litmus test papers… only I got a little more than necessary and Olga starts to swear at everyone: Both at the helmsmen and at the waves. He bonfires them… It’s convenient when someone in the team takes on this function – he swears. I rest.
You can see the glow of the lights of Africa.
0700, coordinates – 29*03’6N 012*24’1W. It turned out that the “glow of Africa” was the fires of the fishermen. There are quite a few of them here. I had to make a couple of tacks to disperse.
Turns out today is World Sleep Day! What luck, in 42 minutes my watch ends. Go to sleep. Something good might happen.
0956, saw a whale. They walked two meters away. He didn’t even move his nose. Maybe he’s asleep, but that doesn’t make it any easier.
1405, that’s definitely a day of sleep. Polina and I got shifts from 16:00 to 20:00 and from 04:00 to 08:00. You can sleep all day, just like all night, with the exception of twilight. But, most importantly, sleep during the day. That’s why it’s a holiday – a day of sleep.

March 2,

0451, coordinates – 29*38’3N 010*18’1W. As soon as we hit Africa, the wind began to turn to the west and we follow it .. we climb up along the coast towards Agadir. On the right, African towns slowly float by. It inflated, for a couple of hours up to 20 knots and again subsided.
A flock of dolphins played with the Boat for an hour. Green comets cut through the water next to the side.
1102, Agadir 20 miles. Warm and sunny, after a long hibernation, the inhabitants of gloomy cabins get out to warm themselves on the forecastle and forecastle … in the east, over Africa, the Anti-Atlas Mountains rise like an impregnable wall..
1530, came to Agadir

February 3,

went south through the Anti-Atlas Mountains to Tafraout. Another surprise in life… such a beauty.. these pink-orange colors combined with greenery. The original plan was to get to Essaouira, then to Marrakech, but when we arrived in Essaouira on the evening of the 4th, of course, the idea came to not go anywhere else and spend one day walking around the city and not hurrying anywhere.

Immediately upon arrival, we found a good inexpensive hotel in the old part of the city and spent three days there. We walked a lot, bought all sorts of necessary and unnecessary things on the street, drank Moroccan tea, simply stared at the surrounding unreal reality, slept on beds that did not rock, drank wine, tried the exotic sweets of “happiness” of the African-French hipovic resort . .. “What, Vova covered with gingerbread?” – this is an immortal phrase from Sasha Sibilev.
On the sixth evening they returned with gifts on board the Julta. Before the holiday of March 8, “Juliet” received new elegant covers for ottomans, cushions for sofas and real Moroccan rugs in the cabins as a gift. She seems to be happy.)

March 7th

We left Agadir Marina at 1420. Judging by the forecast, we have a good tailwind ahead of us. Now, while we are behind the cape, we are going on a motor and with a dull – reefed mainsail. Let’s see what happens in a couple of hours. Before the start, we were approached by several pairs of smart-looking young people, asking to get to the Canary Islands. They didn’t take it. No free places. Sasha was upset – “there will be no one to talk to after the shift)”.
1552, the wave that began to approach the North is impressive. And we still have 5 knots, the sun is shining gently, only things are rattling in the lockers … Or is it canned food under the sofa?
1748, coordinates 30*07’3N 010*00″3W. Almost a storm, wind up to 33 knots, wave three meters. The grotto was removed in time. Now, under one genoa, on a wave, it broaches so much that you want to remove it by half. What a blessing that it’s all along the way. Went upstairs to share experience, instead got a bucket of water in the face. I sit wet and think whether to change clothes or not. At the same time, we continue to broach. Just now Olga yelled in a bad voice, the boat was brought in. I run to the top. On the bridge there is a struggle for the helm. Olga, with her eyes wide open, is trying to get the boat off (the boat is brought, we are lying on our side, the wind is whistling), screaming, calling for help. Sasha arrived in time for Olga, the two of them are trying to save us … And at this time, Andrey is hanging on the lee wheel and leading the boat! It hangs silently, but it is clear that it is strong: Olga and Sasha cannot overcome it.
And the wind is not too strong, but what a healthy wave.
1828, reefed Genoa. We continue to be led to the wind. What are they doing next, etching the rope from the stern windward hawse?
Changed the keyboard on the computer.
We go 9 – 12 knots.
1947, coordinates 29*54’5N 010*12’4W. Storm. For the first time I see how on the “Juliet” one wave knocks down three people at once. First Olga, and then two more Olga.

March 8,

0408, coordinates 29*26’3N 011*14’2W. The ocean decided to wash us off for the last Moroccan visit.
0812, in the morning the cyclone broke away from us and fled to the West. We can only go under the motor on this crazy wet arable land.
Sasha and Volodya arranged a festive breakfast. Among the scattered dishes, oranges and wet clothes, they raked a place, laid the table and scrambled eggs with wine, congratulated Polya and Olya.
Happy holiday dear ladies!

1456, festive dinner. We continue to go under the motor. We see a lot of swimming turtles heading to America.
Sharing experiences. Sasha: “I just lit a cigarette, I feel the buzz begins … Then this wave comes! Fuck! All tobacco on the face! And Vovka, as he stood imperturbably at the right helm, is still standing, only now behind the left …
By the evening we caught up with the cyclone, the night sailed up to 10 knots.

March 9,

Passed between Lanzarote and Fuertoventura around midnight.

1530, came to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria… 340 miles, in two days, not bad at all.

March 10,

Day off, visited the Wishing Stone. A little sun and good mood before Moscow…

15 amazing places to go on holiday in February 2023

February isn’t known for having the best climate — the chilly weather in Europe is only really a positive if your idea of the perfect break is being up a mountain, staring down a ski run. One advantage are the carnivals in the run-up to Lent, which manage to dispel any gloom; Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras, usually falls in February. For guaranteed warmth and sunny weather, you’ll need to travel a bit beyond Europe and read up before you set your sights on the shade of a particular palm tree — tropical destinations can vary immensely when it comes to their wet and dry seasons. Read on for the best winter sun escapes and the long-haul destinations that shine at this time of year.

New Orleans’s French Quarter during Mardi Gras (Getty Images)

1. New Orleans, USA

Why go in February? For the biggest of parties in the home of good times

Average temperature 19C

Old-world streets decked out in green, purple and gold announce the arrival of Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The two weeks leading up to Shrove Tuesday see a crescendo of parades and parties by krewes (carnival clubs), with lots of floats, jazz and body paint. It’s a busy time to visit of course, but much less humid than in Louisiana’s summer months, when temperatures are generally in the high teens. You’ll find a more local vibe to Mardi Gras away from the heritage facades and tourist traps of the French Quarter.

Where to stay Henry Howard Hotel is a townhouse dating from 1867, with a classical colonnade and part-contemporary design, one block back from a big parade route along St Charles Avenue.

Lamai Beach on Koh Samui (Alamy)

2. Koh Samui, Thailand

Why go in February? For a later start to perfect beach weather

Average temperature 28C

Koh Samui and its neighbouring islands in the southern Gulf of Thailand are at their driest in February, after a short but intense wet season from October to December. You’ll find some of the biggest Full Moon Parties on the island of Koh Pha-ngan, while the northeast of this jungle-clad island is quieter, as is smaller Koh Tao to the north, best for diving and snorkelling. Koh Samui itself is a gateway to both and Thailand’s second-largest island after Phuket, so there’s plenty of variety in its beaches, activities and hotels.

Where to stay All-villa accommodation on a small private island just off the northeast shore of Koh Samui makes Cape Fahn Hotel a luxurious choice.

3. Lofoten Islands, Norway

Why go in February? For a meeting of land and sea under the aurora

Average temperature -1C

It only takes three months for the Lofoten Islands, above the Arctic Circle, to catch their first glimpse of the midnight sun after many weeks of 24-hour night or twilight, and February sits in the middle of when it all starts to shift. This is the month to balance having enough darkness to hope for a sighting of the northern lights, with at least a few hours of sun to light up these majestic islands, where mountain ranges meet the ocean. A highway threads along the chain as far as the concisely named village of Å, passing old fishing settlements where wooden cabins perch on stilts at the water’s edge.

Where to stay Get a taste of a Norwegian fisherman’s life in the days of old by staying in one of the 38 cabins at Svinøya Rorbuer in the town of Svolvær.

Whale watching in Baja California (Alamy)

4. Baja California, Mexico

Why go in February? For extraordinary wildlife encounters

Average temperature 25C

This is a generally dry and slightly cooler time of year across Mexico. Winter sun aside, the best reason to visit in February is to catch some incredible animal migrations. Millions of monarch butterflies are getting ready to fly north after their winter stay in the forested mountains of the Michoacán-Mexico State border. And in the lagoons on the coast of Baja California, grey whales come right up to visitor boats in some of the world’s most well-managed wildlife encounters. You’ll find both high-end resorts and abundant nature reserves along this 700-mile peninsula.

Where to stay In the Baja Sur town of Loreto, which is often a base for whale-watching trips, La Mision Loreto Hotel is a modern outpost with hacienda-style touches, right on the shore of the Gulf of California.

5. Ari Atoll, Maldives

Why go in February? For beach time and underwater discoveries in the best conditions

Average temperature 31C

The almost 1,200 tropical islands of the Maldives experience their driest month in February. They are grouped into 26 atolls that lie in an elongated loop, like necklaces within a necklace, suspended in the midst of the Indian Ocean. Whale sharks tend to move to the eastern atolls around December and back west again in May, but at Ari Atoll on the western side these gentle giants can be spotted year-round and now is a great time for diving visibility generally and high season for escapes to white-sand beaches.

Where to stay Well placed for spotting whale sharks and manta rays, Lux South Ari Atoll has over-water villas and thatched beach bungalows on a mile-long island, plus eight restaurants and plenty of family options.

Tschäggätä mask-wearing carnival in Lötschental, Valais (Alamy)

6. Valais, Switzerland

Why go in February? For hitting the ski runs in the most Alpine of settings

Average temperature -10C

Assorted European half-term holidays can make Alpine ski resorts busy in February and this month is typically the best for finding powdery snow. If Switzerland is the heart of the Alps, then the canton of Valais is it in microcosm: French-speaking in the west, German-speaking in the east, with the pinnacle of the Matterhorn almost halfway. Zermatt, Verbier and Crans-Montana are among the best-known resorts, but under-the-radar alternatives include Grimentz, which has kept much of its traditional wooden architecture, and the valley of the Lötschental — of interest even to non-skiers for its slightly scary Tschäggätä carnival, famous for its frightful masks.

Where to stay The 32-room Hôtel Alpina in Grimentz has an ideal location between the two main ski lift stations in the village, with an unfussy modern Alpine look inside and cycling facilities for the summer season.

7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Why go in February? For samba and sequins in a spectacularly set city

Average temperature 28C

While the pre-Lenten carnival season is generally chilly in its European home, in Brazil the revelry happens at the height of summer. It’s a favourite Brazilian holiday time despite bursts of rain in much of the country — apart from the northeast, where Salvador and Recife have their own proud carnival traditions. If you’re looking for bucket-list spectacle, Rio de Janeiro’s show tops the bill, whether you score a ticket to watch the dazzling parade in the 90,000-seat Sambadrome or join in with the beating of drums at neighbourhood parties, watched over by Sugarloaf Mountain and the statue of Christ the Redeemer.

8. Luxor, Egypt

Why go in February? To follow in ancient footsteps along the banks of the Nile

Average temperature 23C

Winter in Egypt means packing something a little warmer to wear outside in the evenings. Summer temperatures regularly top 40C, so if your sights are set more on temples and pyramids than diving in the Red Sea, go in February for pleasant conditions under the desert sun. The pay-off gets bigger the further up the Nile you go and in Luxor (annual rainfall: less than 1mm) you’ll find an outstanding concentration of historic sites in and around one of ancient Egypt’s capitals. Now is the time to explore the Valley of the Kings without feeling as parched as the mummies its painted tombs once held.

Where to stay Overlooking the Nile, the Sofitel Winter Palace is an atmospheric piece of Luxor history, built in 1886 and visited by Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill and Tutankhamun expedition sponsor Lord Carnarvon.

The Winter Carnival in Quebec (Alamy)

9. Quebec, Canada

Why go in February? For joie de vivre in sub-zero temperatures

Average temperature -9C

It’s the second-coldest month of the year in Quebec, but the province’s inhabitants are ready to party. In the capital, Quebec City, the Winter Carnival runs over ten days, usually in early February, and features parades, snow sculptures and winter sports such as ice canoeing. Overlapping with this, La Poutine Week glorifies the national dish of Canada: chips, cheese curds and gravy in a festival that began in Montreal and has spread nationwide. Outside the cities, now is also the season for skiing (downhill and cross-country) in resorts such as Mont-Tremblant.

Where to stay Quebec City’s landmark par excellence since 1893, the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac looks even more splendid with snow on its turrets — it’s possibly the world’s most photographed hotel.

10. Palawan, Philippines

Why go in February? For tropical island-hopping at the most comfortable time of year

With more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines defies easy categorisation, but it’s true that apart from along a narrow eastern fringe, February sees the lowest rainfall of the year. It’s still high season and there are fewer tourists than in the New Year period, plus there’s a host of celebrations including Baguio’s flower festival, making February all-in-all a great time to explore. Inland attractions include the Banaue Rice Terraces and the Chocolate Hills of Bohol, but the call of white sands and turquoise waters speaks loudest. The province of Palawan has world-class wreck diving and — in the Bacuit Archipelago around El Nido — a wonderland of limestone islets sheltering secret coves.

Where to stay One of a small group of hotels dotted around northern Palawan, El Nido Resorts Miniloc Island has rooms in thatched cottages perched on stilts between sheltered waters and green cliffs.

The carnival in Valletta (Alamy)

11. Valletta, Malta

Why go in February? For parade floats in a superb fortress city on the Med

Average temperature 13C

The week before Ash Wednesday brings out the crowds, in what is otherwise Malta’s low season, for carnival celebrations across the Mediterranean island nation. Small but rich in historic sights, capital Valletta is the centre of the action, with larger-than-life floats featuring colourful and often satirical figures and dancers in equally eye-popping get-up. Other festivities include the Nadur Carnival on Gozo, with more macabre themes. Costumed merriment aside, it’s a mild time in Malta, with temperatures around the low teens; not exactly beach weather, but a fine choice for some winter sun while staying (just) in Europe.

Where to stay By the waterfront in Senglea, one of the Three Cities across from Valletta, the Cugó Gran Macina Grand Harbour has 21 suavely contemporary suites inside a 16th-century bastion.

Ostriches in Little Karoo (Alamy)

12. Eastern Cape, South Africa

Why go in February? For inspiring scenery and safaris in South Africa’s second-largest province

Average temperature 17C

Summer in South Africa is both the driest time of year around Cape Town in the southwest and the wettest as you go northeast towards Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park. The picture is more diverse in the province of the Eastern Cape and this variety — not just in climate — is key to its appeal. Its boundaries encompass coastal trails at the eastern end of the Garden Route, the semi-desert surrounds of the Karoo inland and wildlife-spotting, including all (with luck) of the Big Five at Addo Elephant National Park and other preserves. The Wild Coast to the east is green and rugged as the name suggests.

Where to stay Woodall Country House & Spa is ideally positioned for trips to see Addo’s elephants and has spacious country estate-style rooms on a working citrus farm.

Sunset on the Osa Peninsula in Puntarenas (Alamy)

13. Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Why go in February? For rainforest wildlife and unspoiled sandy beaches

Average temperature 28C

Central America’s ecotourism star gets tropical downpours throughout the year in most places (hence its resplendent rainforest) but if you’re on the Pacific coast, February is a drier time — busy, but less so than January or Easter. Puntarenas Province covers most of the country’s western shore, including the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, with relaxed beach vibes around the town of Montezuma, and further along, two of the country’s top national parks: Manuel Antonio (small and accessible, and very biodiverse) and more remote but stunning Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula.

Where to stay Between Manuel Antonio and Corcovado national parks, Oxygen Jungle Villas has ocean views from the infinity pool in its green hillside perch and a Balinese-inspired vibe.

Tasmania, Australia

Why go in February? For late summer days on Australia’s island state

Average temperature 21C

The last days of January signal “back to school” across Australia, but temperatures remain near their summer highs well into February, accompanied by tropical rains in northern parts. At the other end of the continent, the island of Tasmania is at its sunniest and its landscapes are at their most inviting, from the vivid colours of the beaches in the Bay of Fires, to the epic vistas of Cradle Mountain. Add to that a mix of both familiar Australian critters and locally endemic wildlife (wallabies, wombats, Tasmanian devils), food and wine trails, plus cultural discoveries in the capital Hobart and Australia’s outlier state promises a well-rounded holiday.

Where to stay On the east coast en route from Hobart to the Bay of Fires, the Piermont Retreat is a beachside collection of stone cottages accompanied by a fine farm-to-table restaurant.

A young mountain gorilla in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Alamy)

15. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

Why go in February? For gorilla encounters and other wonders of nature

Average temperature 19C

Most of Uganda gets two dry(ish) seasons — December to February and June to September — and although the first is the wetter of the two, it’s also a less busy time to visit. Thinner vegetation at the end of this first lull in the rains means easier wildlife-spotting. Uganda’s Western Region is home to many of the country’s biggest draws, from the elephants and lions of Murchison Falls National Park in the north, to the otherworldly flora of the Rwenzori Mountains and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in the south. Book well ahead for guided treks in the prime sanctuary for mountain gorillas.

Where to stay At the southern edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Rushaga Gorilla Lodge has comfortable cottages part-way in style between log cabins and safari tents.
