With summer just a few months away, and the U.S. increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates, Americans are gearing up for the possibility of a more normal summer season. But while residents in the northern U.S. typically enjoy comfortably warm temperatures, Americans in other parts of the country increasingly face months of extreme heat and other severe weather events. According to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), some U.S. cities experience nearly 200 days per year with temperatures of 90℉ or higher, a number that’s rising.

Many parts of the U.S. with already high summer temperatures are seeing their temperatures climb even higher as the Earth’s temperatures warm. In every year since 1977, global average temperatures have been higher than the 20th century global temperature average. And the difference from the average 20th century temperature has been steadily climbing.

In 2020, the global temperature average was 1.6℃ higher (2.84℉) than the average temperature from the last century, making it the warmest year on record (tied with year 2016). The impacts of global climate change are already occurring in the form of sea ice depletion, faster rise in sea levels, and more intense heat waves. Scientists predict that global temperatures will continue to increase, although not uniformly, and much of the western and central parts of the U.S. will be subject to more frequent and extreme summer heat waves.

As the Earth warms overall, such high temperature extremes are becoming increasingly common. In 2020, 49% of the U.S. had maximum temperatures much above normal—that is, nearly half of the country had high temperatures in the upper 10th percentile of the local historical record. At the same time, cold temperature extremes have become less common. For example, in 2020, no part of the U.S. recorded low temperatures in the bottom 10th percentile.

At the state level, some states have had more marked increases in their average temperatures than others. Comparing data from the past year to the historical record, Rhode Island experienced the greatest average temperature increase, 3.6℉, from the 20th century average temperature. Other states with similar increases include Maine, Arizona, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, California, and New Jersey. Only two states, Arkansas and Oklahoma, actually recorded slightly lower average temperatures than last century’s average, -0.2℉ and -0.1℉ lower, respectively.

Filterbuy’s MERV 13 air filters stop 98% of airborne particles from entering your home. Be sure to keep the air in your home healthy and clean with Filterbuy.

To find the hottest city in every state, researchers at Filterbuy analyzed the latest data from NOAA. Within each state, the researchers ranked cities according to the greatest long-term average number of days per year when the temperature is 90℉ or higher. Researchers also calculated the long-term average number of days per year when the temperature is 100℉ or higher, the long-term average high temperature during the summer months, and the average long-term low temperature during summer. Only cities with populations of 10,000 or greater were considered in the analysis.

Detailed Findings & Methodology

Of the hottest cities in each state, Yuma, AZ boasts the highest number of days per year with temperatures above 90℉, at 185 days or over half the year. Yuma also has an astounding 124 days per year with temperatures over 100℉. On average, the hottest cities have 59 days per year with temperatures over 90℉ and 13 days per year with temperatures over 100℉.

Summer high and low temperatures also vary substantially among the hottest cities. On average across all 50 cities, the average summer high temperature is 89℉ and the average summer low temperature is 65℉. However, some cities have far hotter days. Yuma’s average high in summer is 108℉, while the average high summer temperature in Fairbanks, AK is just 71℉. Besides more moderate temperature during the day, northern states also tend to have cooler nights and mornings during the summer. This is reflected in the average summer low temperatures. The average low temperature in the summer in Fairbanks is a brisk 49℉, while summer temperatures typically don’t fall much below 80℉ in Indio, CA.

To find the hottest city in every state, researchers at Filterbuy analyzed the latest data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Centers for Environmental Information’s (NCEI) Climate Normals dataset. The Climate Normals are three-decade averages of climatological variables, including temperature and precipitation. Within each state, the researchers ranked cities according to the greatest long-term average number of days per year when the temperature is 90℉ or higher. Researchers also calculated the long-term average number of days per year when the temperature is 100℉ or higher, the long-term average high temperature in summer, and the average long-term low temperature in summer. Only cities with populations of 10,000 or greater were considered in the analysis.

Weather and the best places to visit Thailand in February.

Introduction

February represents the tail end of Thailand’s peak Christmas season — the crowds thin out a little, but the weather remains excellent. Everywhere from Bangkok north will see a slight increase in the chance of rain, while in the South the chance of rain will recede even further. Temperatures will remain oscillating around the low 20s to low 30s mark.

Where is best in Thailand in February?

While still busy, popular islands like Ko Chang and Ko Samui have passed peak season and room rates start to come back down to earth — unless you visit a destination that’s popular with Chinese travellers, like Chiang Mai or Ko Samui, during Chinese New Year. With dry season in full swing, ugly brown-yellow rather than scenic green pervades the paddies around upcountry spots like Nong Khai and Sukhothai. Even so, there’s no place that we would avoid in February.

What are the most popular Thai islands in February?

Though crowds are generally thinner than during the peak season of late December and January, February is still considered high season on every Thai island. Rain is rare and seas are calm across the board: in Andaman Sea islands like Ko Kradan and Ko Lanta; in lower Gulf islands like Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao; and in eastern Gulf islands like Ko Chang and Ko Maak.

Bangkok and Central Thailand

Bangkok and Central Thailand see a slight rise in temperatures, accompanied by a small uptick in the chance of rain. That said you’re still only talking about one or two days of rain in the month. This is the last “cool” month till October or November.

Eastern Thailand

Temperatures will be slightly lower than in Bangkok and Central Thailand, though there will be more rain — perhaps some rain every four to five days. February remains an especially popular time of the year to visit eastern Thai islands like Ko Chang and Ko Kut.

Northern Thailand

February sees Northern Thailand begin to make the transition from the cool to the hot season. Evenings will remain a little cool, but during the day it will warm up. Those going trekking should still check that blankets are a part of the package. Chance of rain remains very low. This is a good time in northern Thailand as the haze from the burning hasn’t really got going and the weather is quite reasonable

Northeast Thailand

The Northeast’s weather in February is really an extension of Central Thailand, albeit a little cooler come the evenings. Daytime temperatures are beginning to rise. Expect a couple of days with rain month, but not more. This is probably the last month in which the heat isn’t oppressive, to visit the Northeast until the rainy season ends.

Southeast Thailand

On the Gulf Islands and the southeast coast, expect temperatures in the mid to high twenties. The rains of January should have backed off making for all round excellent beach weather. Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Tao are excellent in February.

Southwest Thailand

Like January, February is one of the best months of the year weather-wise to visit the Andaman Coast of Thailand. From Phuket to Trang and beyond, expect excellent weather, a lot of sunshine and perhaps just one or two days with rain. The temperature sits around the mid 20s to low 30s range.

Abnormally warm weather in Yakutia and record heat in the Arctic

A prolonged and intense heat wave in the north of Yakutia was marked in Verkhoyansk, located north of the Arctic Circle, by a new record temperature in the Arctic of 38°.

Maximum air temperature from June 13 to 24, 2020

Verkhoyansk is known as the pole of cold, in 1982 on February 5 and 7 the temperature there dropped to -67. 8 °. On June 20, 2020, the daytime temperature reached 38°, which was a triple record: days (previous record 31.4°, 1993), month (previous 34.0°, June 16, 1990) and summer (previous record 37.3°, July 25, 1988). Now Verkhoyansk will also be known as the hottest place in the Arctic.

Now the annual temperature variation in Verkhoyansk is 105.8°. Verkhoyansk is located a little north of the Arctic Circle – at 67°33’N. and 133° 23” E (Arctic Circle – 66°33′44″ ) .

The confirmed value of the maximum temperature on June 20, 2020 at the Verkhoyansk metro station, received from Roshydrometer, will pass the standard verification procedure for the experts of the Global Archive of Extreme Weather and Climate Events, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) reported in a message dated June 23. nine0003

So far, WMO “has not tested potential records for the ‘highest temperature recorded north of the Arctic Circle’. However, there has been enough interest in this extreme observation that we are currently exploring the creation of such a new category for the official archive, according to Randall Cerveny, WMO Special Rapporteur on extreme weather and climate extremes.

“The WMO Rapid Response Team gave provisional recognition of this observation as a legitimate observation, which is consistent with current observations in the upper atmosphere at the time in Siberia,” said Prof. Cherveni. “This will now be subject to the usual process for a detailed formal review by a team of WMO atmospheric scientists.” nine0003

The reason for the prolonged heat wave: the spread of a warm air mass from the southwest (from Kazakhstan through Siberia), the formation of a low-moving high anticyclone over the north of Central Siberia and Yakutia, very long daylight hours (practically polar night), dry air, lack of snow .

In Verkhoyansk, for 11 days from June 18 to June 28, 2020, the maximum daily temperature exceeded 30°C, and ranged from 31.4°C to 35.2°C, with a peak on June 20th up to 38.0°C. Average daily temperature: from 23.8° to 28.2°, nights: from 13.8 to 17°. Updated 9absolute maximum temperature (from 19 to 25 June and from 26 to 28)

June 2020 in Verkhoyansk with an average temperature of 19. 2°C became the warmest in history, ahead of June 2019 with the same indicator of 17.9°C, which held the title the warmest is only one year. In 2019, the average June temperature in Yakutia, Eastern Siberia and Chukotka was 4-8°C or more above normal.

Season and climate | Pyatigorsk

  • About Pyatigorsk
  • Season and climate

Pyatigorsk is located in the southern part of the temperate continental belt, in the center of the vast isthmus of the Caucasus, between the Black and Caspian Seas. Volcanic cones of Pyatigorye rise around the city, with the dominant peak Beshtau. The high Caucasus mountains do not allow warm air from the Transcaucasus to enter the territory, but they also do not retain cold air from the Arctic, which comes in winter and fills the space up to the mountains. The climate for this reason is more severe than in many other regions that are located at the same latitude. nine0003

The city is located in the foothills, the climate here is milder than in the surrounding plains. Only 90 km from Pyatigorsk rises the highest mountain in Russia – Elbrus.

On the one hand, the formation of the climate is influenced by the relief of the foothills, the proximity of the snowy peaks of the Caucasus and the glaciers located on it, on the other hand, the semi-deserts of the Caspian coast and arid steppes, which determine the continental features of the climate.

The territory is also affected by all types of air masses, with the exception of equatorial ones. nine0003

Most of the time in the year there is continental air of temperate latitudes. From here, the weather is hot, cloudy, dry in summer, and frosty and clear in winter.

The climatic regime changes throughout the year.

Winter comes in late November – early December, but in December cold days often give way to warm ones, snow falls and melts, real winter is January and February. Temperature -3, -5. Rarely, but it drops to -20, but, as a rule, lasts for several days. Eastern winds dominate, winter winds are frequent and of high speed. Most days are cloudy. Only with the establishment of high pressure do the days become clear. There is little precipitation in winter, since the cold air contains little moisture, the snow cover is about 10 cm. There are often frost, ice, fog. Cold winters in the modern period are extremely rare. nine0003

Snow cover is low and unstable, usually falls and melts quickly. Most of the winter passes without snow at all.

Spring begins in the first half of February. The temperature begins to rise, and it is not uncommon for warm air to come in from South Asia. March is characterized by a rapid increase in daytime temperatures (although there are also sharp drops). The snow begins to melt and by the end of March, as a rule, it disappears completely. The average daily air temperature rises above 5°, the growing season begins. But often in April-May, air humidity decreases, which leads to the appearance of dry winds. The amount of precipitation increases, the first thunderstorms occur in April. There are frosts almost every year in April. In spring it is mostly foggy and rainy. nine0003

May is often rainy and wet, but not always.

Summer starts already in the middle of May. The average daily temperature is in different years above 25 °. Western winds prevail. Dry winds are frequent in August. Most precipitation falls in June. As a rule, these are showers with thunderstorms and hail. In the past 10 years, more often in summer the weather is cool and humid.

Summer in Pyatigorsk is warm, sometimes hot, but the heat is tolerated quite easily, thanks to the blowing winds, which intensify in the daytime. The swimming season is usually June-August. nine0003

The average atmospheric pressure in the city is slightly below the norm – 712 mm, the lowest in July, and the highest in January. Most precipitation falls in June, February has the minimum.

Autumn comes somewhere in the middle of September. In October it is still warm, but by November it is cold. Often there is low cloud cover, drizzle falls. The temperature is from 8-11°, but sometimes cold arctic air masses come in, lowering the temperature to negative values.

It is cool and dry in autumn, although sometimes the temperature fluctuates around +20°. Small frosts begin, as a rule, in November. nine0003

The best period of the year is from May to October. The average January temperature in Pyatigorsk is 4°. The minimum was – 33 °. In July – +22° (maximum +40°). Average annual – +8.6°. 98 clear days a year.

The resort has a sharp transition from summer to autumn and from winter to spring.

The best time to visit is in autumn. The weather is dry and sunny, bright landscapes and an abundance of fruits.

Researches of bioclimatologists have shown that the air is transparent and has a high ionization. Ultraviolet radiation ionizes oxygen, and ionized air is very useful. Resort parks and mountain meadows purify the air from pollution and fill it with healing volatile phytoorganic substances.

The Wall Street Journal: shot by the SBU for treason turned out to be a hero guards.

On March 5, 2022, the media, including our publication, reported that during the arrest, representatives of the SBU shot dead banker Denis Kireev in Kyiv, who participated in the negotiations between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia in Gomel on February 28. He was allegedly suspected of treason. nine0003

On March 5, the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine announced the death of its employee Denis Kireev while performing a special task. The Main Intelligence Directorate published a list of dead Ukrainian intelligence officers – Denis Kireev is listed among others. He attended the first peace talks with Russia, held in the Gomel region of Belarus on February 28, although he was not officially listed as a participant in the meeting.

“The Wall Street Journal” writes that 45-year-old banker Denis Kireev was killed as a Russian spy: Ukrainian security services left his body with a bullet hole in the back of his head on the sidewalk in the center of Kyiv, a few days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, a few days later, Kireev was buried like a hero and laid next to the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine at the Baykove cemetery in Kyiv. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed documents on awarding Denis Kireev posthumously with a medal for “an exceptional contribution to the defense of state sovereignty and state security. ” nine0003

The Wall Street Journal writes that Denis Kireev, who was shot dead at the beginning of the full-scale war and whom the Ukrainian Security Service called a traitor, on the eve of the Russian invasion, warned Ukrainian intelligence about Moscow’s plan to seize Kyiv. According to the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, General Kirill Budanov, Kireev passed on information from his Russian contacts that helped Ukrainian forces successfully defend the capital last February:

“If not for Mr. Kireev, Kyiv would most likely have been taken.” nine0017

According to him, Kireev developed ties with European intelligence services, with the Russian military and officials. He agreed to represent Kyiv in early ceasefire talks between Russia and Ukraine. As one of Kireev’s friends notes, he “liked playing the role of agent 007.”

Denis Kireev was born in the Ukrainian capital and started his career in finance, working in local branches of Western banks, including Crédit Lyonnais, Citibank and ING. Interest in espionage, Kireev’s associates say, he showed up in 2003, when his relative became deputy head of the SBU. nine0003

In 2006, Kireev went to work for Donetsk-based businessmen Andrei and Sergei Klyuev, close to Yanukovych, who made their fortune in metallurgy and real estate. After the Klyuevs escaped in 2014, Kireev helped manage some of the brothers’ assets from the capital.

In 2021, Denis Kireev, at the crossroads of Russian and Ukrainian business and security, caught the attention of Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

At a time when Russia began amassing troops on the border with Ukraine in the spring of 2021, Budanov summoned Kireev to the headquarters of the Main Intelligence Directorate in Kyiv and asked him to use his connections to infiltrate Russian military intelligence. He agreed and, according to WSJ sources, traveled from Kharkov to the Russian Federation and then reported to the head of the GUR.

In the fall of 2021, the US military and spy agencies began to warn Ukraine of the Russian threat. At the same time, Kireev learned from his sources that Moscow was preparing for an invasion, Budanov noted, and became the first to sound the alarm in Ukraine. nine0003

On February 18, Kireev refused to go with his family to the French Alps, and on the afternoon of February 23 he gave Budanov new intelligence: Russian President Vladimir Putin had just ordered an invasion early the next morning. According to the head of the GUR, Kireev also knew the main point of impact.

At 8 am on February 24, Russian combat helicopters landed troops at the Antonov airport near Kyiv. The Kremlin planned to seize the airport in order to transfer troops and equipment there to storm the capital. According to the head of Ukrainian intelligence, Kireyev’s tip gave Ukraine a few precious hours to deploy troops to counter the Russian attack. After a fierce battle, the airport was damaged and could not be used by the Russian military. nine0003

After Russia’s plans for a quick strike were thwarted, the parties agreed to negotiate a ceasefire in Belarus. Given that Kireev was familiar with two members of the Russian delegation, Budanov invited him to take part in the negotiations, and he agreed.

The head of the GUR noted:

“After he appeared there, his connection with the secret services became obvious to everyone. Unfortunately, the situation was critical then, and we had to take risks.”

After returning from Belarus, Kireev met with Budanov, their meeting lasted several hours. According to his security officer, Kireev was aware that he was in danger and left the meeting in a silent mood.

A few days later Kireev was visited by a friend in his house on the northern outskirts of Kyiv. Holding a large-caliber hunting rifle, Kireev said he fired it at Russian operatives who had come to his house a few nights earlier. nine0003

When Russia and Ukraine agreed on a second round of talks on March 3, Budanov again insisted on Kireev’s participation. According to Budanov, on the night before the talks in Belarus, Kireev received a call from the office of Alexander Poklad, head of counterintelligence of the SBU. Poklad, who was in charge of detaining intelligence and security officials suspected of working for Russia, wanted to meet. He himself declined to comment, as did the press secretary of the SBU, referring to the law on state secrets, the newspaper notes. nine0003

Kireev arrived at the Kyiv railway station with his bodyguards and military intelligence agents for a trip to Belarus. He told the guards that he might be arrested on the way and, according to his guard, said: “Don’t interfere.”

The group went to the center of Kyiv to the St. Sophia Cathedral. Soon minibuses with SBU agents arrived, immediately ordering military intelligence officers and Kireev’s guards to lay down their arms. Kireev himself was taken to a minibus and taken away. An hour and a half later, military intelligence agents were called to the place where Kireev’s body was found. nine0003

The Ukrainian State Bureau of Investigation, which is responsible for investigating such murders, declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal recalls that in July, Volodymyr Zelensky fired the head of the SBU, Ivan Bakanov, and also fired or prosecuted dozens of department generals for their possible role in facilitating the Russian invasion.

In an interview with the Latvian Delfi, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the President’s Office, spoke about the poor coordination of the Ukrainian special services at the beginning of the war, which was the reason for the murder of Kireev, one of the consultants of the Ukrainian delegation, accused of high treason:

“He was related to the main intelligence department, and his murder was due to the fact that there was no unified coordination between law enforcement agencies. On the one hand, there were certain claims against him, on the other hand, they did not manage to resolve these claims in a dialogue format, this is not connected with the work of the delegation and with the negotiation process.

Lanzarote is a winter-sun destination, and so you’ll find February is pleasantly warm. It’s an ideal month for hiking – not too warm with clear skies and little rain. The sea is warmer than you might expect for February and is comfortable for swimming. We’ve looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Lanzarote, covering the last 12 years up to 2022, plus we’ve asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Lanzarote weather in February.

What’s the weather like in Lanzarote in February?

The weather in Lanzarote in February is mostly sunny, like the rest of the year on the island! The southern part of the island, in particular, has minimal rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it a great place to visit from the UK for some winter sunshine. Daytimes have temperatures reaching from 18 to 22 degrees Celsius on the warmest days in February, and dropping to around 13 degrees during nighttime. It’s not dissimilar to a warm spring in the UK as cloud cover and wind can make you feel cold and reach for a light cardigan, but the calm and uninterrupted blue skies make for perfect sunbathing weather!
Answered by Travel Vixta

What should I pack for a holiday in Lanzarote in February?

Most daytimes in Lanzarote in February are perfectly warm enough for beachwear. Think shorts and t-shirts, dresses and flip flops for the daytime. Take a light cardigan for windy days and a light raincoat in case you’re unlucky and catch one of their two days of rainfall for the month!
If your hotel pool is heated then you’ll definitely want your swimwear, but if not then the pools are pretty cold in February! The same for the sea.
Nighttimes are noticeably cooler, so you may prefer jeans or trousers for the evenings and light jackets in case of breezes. February in Lanzarote is not dissimilar to a warm spring in the UK where you can start to wear summer clothes in the daytime when the sun is out, but you need a cardigan or something warmer to put on for cloudy days or when the sun disappears in the evening.

What’s great about Lanzarote in February?

One of the best things about visiting Lanzarote in February is being out of the summer season, it is relatively quiet! I say relatively as it’s still a popular spot for UK tourists to get some winter sun, being so close, and there is a school half term in February so this will be a busier week. You can also get much better prices for hotels and package holidays in February compared to the summer months, so it’s a great time to visit if you’re on a budget. The flight is around four hours long, making it a relatively quick destination to get to for some winter sun. February is often the coldest month in the UK with average temperatures of 7 degrees, so stepping off a plane in Lanzarote in 18-20 degree weather feels amazing! Like stepping right into spring or summer!

Europe’s south offers a warm welcome to energy migrants

  • Summary
  • Cheaper rent, cheaper bills
  • Some people moving permanently
  • Greek tourism minister toured north Europe to seek visitors
  • Other countries have also campaigned

MADRID/LISBON, Nov 28 (Reuters) – Software developer Victor Varlamov logs in every morning to work on a sunny Spanish island off the coast of Africa after the prospect of steep heating bills and a winter made harsher by the Ukraine war drove him to leave his adoptive home in Poland.

He is not alone in pursuing a warmer, cheaper way of life as tourist boards across southern Europe have seized on the cost-of-living crisis to advertise the benefits of wintering abroad to those living in more northerly countries.

Varmalov, 50, together with his wife and teenage daughter, moved from Poland’s Baltic coast to Gran Canaria in Spain’s Canary Islands two months ago and plans to stay for the coming months.

“The economic crisis and mostly the war situation have pushed me here,” said Varmalov, who is Russian by birth.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February drove some energy prices to record levels in August. They have eased, but are likely to stay high and have led to painful levels of inflation.

Before leaving Gdansk, where he has lived since 2016, Varmalov calculated he could save 250 euros ($259) on rent each month and pay 140 euros for all his utilities and internet, instead of the 200 euros he was paying for electricity alone in Poland.

What he now saves, he spends on eating out, he said, and also enjoys beach walks in his lunch breaks.

“The reality is better than my expectations,” he said.

The regional government of the Canary Islands, where the average winter temperature is 20 degrees Celsius (68°F), launched a social media campaign in September to attract remote workers, such as Varmalov, and retired people from countries including Britain, Germany and Sweden.

“It is no secret this will be a winter of great economic uncertainty in Europe but in the Canary Islands, we want to turn the situation around,” said Yaiza Castilla, the regional tourism chief, describing the islands as an “economic refuge”.

Other southern European countries also see the potential.

The Greek tourism minister in September visited Austria and northern European countries, such as Sweden, to “turn this huge energy crisis plaguing Europe into an opportunity”.

Portugal’s tourism board has also campaigned and its head Luis Araujo said expectations for winter tourists from northern Europe were “very positive”.

Tourism data supports his optimism.

Data collected for Reuters by home rental search engine HomeToGo showed that compared to last year, searches from countries such as Britain, Germany and the Netherlands rose 36%, 13% and 3% for winter accommodation in Spain, Greece and Portugal, respectively.

Gabriel Escarrer, CEO of Spanish hotel chain Melia, said people are booking apartments and suites for two or three months this winter in the Canary Islands, with a notable presence of Scandinavian visitors.

‘REFUGE FOR WINTER’ AND BEYOND

Visitors and more permanent residents are also arriving from Germany, which was highly dependent on Russian gas before the Ukraine war and is anxious about possible winter energy shortages.

Among schools enrolling more students from abroad, the German school in Gran Canaria received 40 applications from foreign students this year, which it said was higher than in previous years without giving precise figures.

Repeople, a co-working association in the Canary Islands, said it had been fully booked for November and 80% full for the rest of the winter.

Among those occupying a slot at Repeople is 31-year-old German freelancer Heiko Schaefer, who plans to stay until Christmas.

“The current rising prices is a reason for many people to move further south,” he said. “This island is a refuge for the winter.”

Airlines will increase by 31% the number of seats available to the Canary Islands, the regional tourism office said.

TUI fly, the leading airline operating between Germany and the Canary Islands, said it would increase flights by around 10%, adding in a statement energy costs were “a psychological element” in pushing more people south.

Airbnb, the short-term rentals firm, said searches for winter stays in southern Europe tripled between April and June.

STUCK AT HOME OR A PERMANENT MOVE

For the majority of northern Europeans, however, heading south is just a dream when the rise in living costs means they cannot afford the luxury of travel.

Instead they are stocking up on goods to keep themselves warm such as duvets, slow cookers and electric blankets, retail sales figures in Britain show.

Others though have decided to move permanently.

Natasha Caldeiras, from Kent, southern England, and her family are moving just before Christmas to her husband’s native Portugal. They said energy prices were the spur.

Caldeiras believes the warmer weather will allow them to turn on the heaters for a shorter period than in Britain, where their monthly bills are around 200 pounds ($242) per month and set to rise.

“Even before the energy crisis, we would have liked to be in Portugal because of the weather,” the 28-year-old said. “But with the energy crisis, (being in Portugal) gives us more security because of the climate.”

Murat Coskun, chief executive of real estate advisory firm Get Properties, said the cost of living crisis was “fuelling the trend” of Britons deciding it was time to leave.

“I don’t think we are at the peak yet,” he said. “The winter is going to be tough.”

Where to go in February

Costa Rica

|

32nd

Costa Rica is one of our biggest exotic Good Trip destinations – 32nd on the index for strong press freedoms and a good record on human rights and LGBTQI+ equality. If you’re looking for a week away on a sunny beach paradise with a clear conscience, only Aruba scores higher.

February is the peak of the dry season, so for sunny blue skies and very little chance of rain this is the best month to head out and explore the beautiful coastlines and islands.

Have a good trip – winter sun

Ethical and sustainable choices for a winter sun break.

Chişinău | Moldova

|

48th

Eastern European city breaks are on the up, and the Moldovan capital Chişinău is no exception. The city suffered during WWII and the tragic earthquake that hit in 1940, so the Soviet Union rebuilt much of it from scratch. What you’ll see today is a reflection of this – earlier grand architecture, brutalist modernism from the later Soviet period and the odd relic of pre-WWII Chişinău.

Chişinău makes for a great long weekend away. As well as having a rich, turbulent history to learn about, the food and nightlife are a real treat. You’ll find a thriving cafe culture, superb wineries nearby and many street festivals throughout the year that bring the city to life. And thanks to its central location, the rest of Moldova is just a day trip away, so it’s the perfect base to explore the country.

Baja California | Mexico

|

70th

Baja California is one of the best destinations in the world for whale watching and February is one of the best times to go. The majority of the world’s population of grey whales return to mate and give birth. The whale watching here is exceptional as you can get up close to the incredibly friendly whales – there’ll be no need to squint into the distance for a hopeful sighting.

If you tire of the sea, there are land-based delights to explore too. Baja California is a great region for wine thanks to the warm and dry climate. There are plenty of vineyards to tour, and of course plenty of wine to taste!

New Orleans | USA

|

23rd

February sees one of the most popular events in the US – Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans. Mardi Gras translates as ‘fat Tuesday’ in French, which reflects the origin of the festival as the last chance to eat rich and fatty food before lent.

The tradition was brought to the US by French Catholics and the celebrations are continued today in New Orleans thanks to its French heritage. During February there are float parades throughout the French Quarter organised by krewes – the most intricate floats are usually put together by Orpheus, Bacchus, and Endymion.

New Zealand

|

9th

If you’re looking to escape the dreary British weather then head to New Zealand, which in February is enjoying the height of summer. The warm days and nights make it the perfect time to book a camper van and hit the open road. It’s best to give yourself 2 weeks minimum to explore – the flight is long and you’ll want to make the trip feel worth it.

There are two islands, North and South. The South is more mountainous and where you’ll find popular sights like Mount Cook, Milford Sound, Lake Tekapo and Christchurch. The North is home to the capital city, Auckland, hot springs at Rotorua and of course Hobbiton itself.

Our guide to Middle-earth

There’s so much more to New Zealand than Hobbit-spotting – but while you’re there. ..

Visit Middle-earth

Treviso | Italy

|

27th

Rather than heading to Venice for Valentine’s, head to nearby Treviso – just as charming but not quite so busy. Plus it’s a short train ride to Venice if you want to visit for the day – especially as the Venice Festival takes place during February.

Just north of the city you can visit the rolling hills that produce that most romantic of beverages – prosecco. Le Colline del Prosecco di Conegliano e Valdobbiadene has recently been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site thanks to it’s unique viticulture.

Swap an expensive destination for a budget break this year – even if you’re skiing!

Madeira | Portugal

|

12th

Tired of your usual trip to the Canaries? Why not mix it up this February and give Madeira a go instead. This Portuguese island is located off the coast of Morrocco and average temperatures in February can reach 19°c.

The island is volcanic, which means that although it may not have the sandiest of beaches there are plenty of interesting sites to explore, like the rugged Pico do Arieiro peak. Plus of course the island is known for its fortified wine, which you’ll want to sample while you’re there.

Singapore

|

71st

Singapore is home to what’s widely considered the world’s best airport, Changi, meaning your holiday starts the moment you step off the plane. In fact you could probably spend more than a day exploring everything there is to do in the airport.

Once you step out of the airport the wonder continues, as Singapore is home to some incredibly interesting sites – like the futuristic Cloud Forest and the iconic Marina Bay resort. February is a great time to visit as it coincides with the Chinese New Year and the end of monsoon season. This means less rain, less humidity and more sunshine.

Train and rail strikes February 2023: Dates and lines affected

26 January 2023, 10:02 | Updated: 1 February 2023, 12:59

Train strikes are set to cause further chaos in 2023.

By Zoe Adams

Are trains on strike today or tomorrow? And what are the official strike dates for February? Rail strike action has been dominating the country in recent months and cancellations and delays are set to continue in 2023.

Trade unions have been calling for better pay and working conditions for a number of industries including buses, ambulances and Royal Mail, but some of the biggest strike action has come from rail workers.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) carried out multiple industrial walkouts in 2022 and early 2023, including a number of dates in the lead up to Christmas, and strike action has also been confirmed for a number of dates in February.

With no pay deal accepted, negotiations are continuing as members fight for a pay rise in line with the current rate of inflation and cost of living.

So when are the next rail strike dates? And what’s the latest in the negotiations? Here’s the dates you need to know for February as lines including the c2c, Greater Anglia and SouthEastern trains are set to be affected.

RMT and rail bosses have failed to reach an agreement so far.

When are the next rail strikes?

Train drivers union Aslef announced two more walkouts on February 1 and 3 after rejecting the latest pay offer. This will also see train delays on the 2nd and 5th.

No further rail strike dates have been confirmed for the main line, London overground or underground trains but further dates are likely according to experts, as the dispute remains unsolved between bosses and workers.

London bus company, Abellio, has confirmed further strike dates which will also bring chaos and disruption to travel around the city.

Which train lines will be affected on rail strike days?

Its action will affect passengers who use the following services:

  • Avanti West Coast
  • Chiltern Railways
  • CrossCountry
  • East Midlands Railway
  • Great Western Railway
  • Greater Anglia
  • GTR Great Northern Thameslink
  • London North Eastern Railway
  • Northern Trains
  • Southeastern
  • Southern/Gatwick Express
  • South Western Railway
  • SWR Island Line
  • TransPennine Express
  • West Midlands Trains

What’s the latest on the RMT pay negotiations?

No official agreement has been reached yet, however, union boss Mick Lynch and the train companies met on January 16th for the next round of talks.

Currently, Mr Lynch and the RMT already have a mandate to run strikes until the end of May but he has said extending this to November is a “possibility”.

“Gazprom” is unlucky with the weather – Newspaper Kommersant No. 1 (7202) dated 01/10/2022

A sharp warming in Europe during the New Year holidays crippled Russian gas supplies in the first week of January. Pumping through Ukraine was almost halved, through the Turkish Stream – by a third, and through the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline remained zero. Expecting a warm winter, Gazprom’s European customers are minimizing current purchases and using stored gas.

Picture: Viktor Chumachev, Kommersant

Picture: Viktor Chumachev, Kommersant

Gazprom nearly halved gas supplies to Europe via Ukraine in the first nine days of January. Thus, according to the Slovak gas transmission operator Eustream, the average daily volume of supplies on January 1-9 fell to 54 million cubic meters, which is 55% less than in the previous ten days of December 2021.

Although gas consumption in Europe traditionally declines in early January due to lower industrial activity during the holidays, last year deliveries through Ukraine were about 50% higher during the same period.

Gazprom currently sells gas to Europe only under long-term contracts. The volume of supplies through them does not depend on Gazprom, but on its customers – it is they who determine how much gas (within the framework of contractual restrictions) they intend to take away every next day. Gazprom could increase supplies to Europe outside the framework of long-term contracts (for example, by selling gas on its electronic trading platform), but prefers not to do so.

In addition to the Ukrainian route, Gazprom supplies gas to Europe via three more gas pipelines: Nord Stream, Turkish Stream and Yamal-Europe. Deliveries via Turkish Stream, according to the Bulgarian gas transmission operator, decreased by an average of 37% over the period under review, to 25.4 million cubic meters per day. Considering that Gazprom has not used the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline at all for almost a month due to the lack of customer applications, the total volume of Russian gas supplies to Europe (excluding Turkey) fell in the first ten days of January to a minimum in at least the last ten years . Deliveries via Nord Stream continued almost unchanged.

According to Kommersant’s interlocutors in the gas market, the main reason for such a sharp drop in Russian gas supplies is warm weather.

In the last days of December and early January, the air temperature in Central and Western Europe set several records: for example, in Berlin and Paris on December 31 in the afternoon it was almost 12°C, in Vienna – 16°C. The wave of warming began to decline only at the end of last week. As a result, despite reduced purchases from Russia, European consumers were able to sharply reduce the rise in gas from storage: according to AGSI+, from December 30 to January 2, stocks in European underground storage even increased, as injection exceeded withdrawal. However, current inventory levels have already fallen below 54%.

Although warm weather led to a correction in gas prices at the end of December to almost $800 per thousand cubic meters from a high of $2,000 reached on December 21, prices began to rise again in the new year. This is partly due to the normalization of weather conditions, partly due to rising oil prices. Trading in February futures for the TTF index on the ICE exchange closed on December 7 at $989 per thousand cubic meters (€83. 4 per 1 MWh).

The Weather Company currently expects January and March in Europe this year to average slightly warmer than multi-year averages, with February warmer in the north of Europe and colder in the south. If this forecast turns out to be correct, the best strategy for Gazprom’s European clients may be to minimize current purchases in order to survive until the warm season on stocks in storage purchased at much lower prices than the current ones.

What’s the weather like in Cyprus in February?

Cyprus is one of the warmest destinations in the Mediterranean due to its location close to southwest Asia, just off the south coast of Turkey and north of Egypt. You’ll get a good amount of sunshine if you plan your Cyprus holidays during February, although it’s one of the coolest months of the year due to the mild and wet winter.

    Climatic influences

The Mediterranean Sea’s coolest in February, which keeps the weather mild. You’ll find things warmer and drier in the east due to westerly winds, while there’s little difference between the north and south. There’s less rain in the east because of Cyprus’ two mountain ranges, with Mount Olympus the tallest of the Troodos Mountains at almost 2,000m.

    Averages

There are different weather averages across Cyprus, but popular Paphos has an average high temperature of 17ºC in February. There’ll be lots of time to relax on the beach during the day, although you should pack some warmer clothes for the evenings as temperatures drop to 8ºC. The average sea temperature’s 17ºC, while humidity’s low and ranges from the early-50s to around 85%. Average rainfall’s 64mm across eight rainy days.

    Daylight

You can expect 11 hours of daylight with six hours of sunshine each day in February. The UV index will be moderate, while sunset’s around 5.20pm at the beginning of February; this gradually gets later until it’s at 5.45pm by the end of the month.

weather by month, when to go on vacation…

The season in Cyprus lasts all year round, but holidays at different times have certain features, because the weather on the coast changes every month. We will tell you everything in as much detail as possible.

Climate in Cyprus: features of the weather and seasons for recreation

If you are in doubt about when to go on vacation to Cyprus, then you should know that rest is available here at any time. The island is located in the Mediterranean climatic zone (a subspecies of the subtropics), the main features of which are early warm spring, hot summer, mild winter and pleasant autumn with a long velvety season. nine0003

The change of seasons is pronounced. It can be clearly traced by noticeably changing temperature, wind direction and humidity levels. At the same time, the most unstable weather is observed in the off-season. The spring and autumn months are very capricious and unpredictable. They are characterized by prolonged precipitation and sharp warming or cooling.

The main signs of summer are intense heat and lack of rain. Winters, on the other hand, are characterized by prolonged downpours and strong winds. In some months, the amount of precipitation rises to 70-9five%.

From late spring to early autumn, Cyprus is influenced by the continental climate of southwest Asia. In this regard, the island is experiencing significant warming, increased pressure and a decrease in humidity to 15%. A significant decline in vacationers is observed in November. February-March is called the low season.

Studying the season in Cyprus by months, it should be noted that the island gets up to 340 sunny days per year. In addition, the local weather and climate are very good for human health. And these are not just words, but confirmed facts: scientists have proved that the longer life expectancy of Cypriots (10 years more than that of Europeans) is connected precisely with the climatic features of the island. nine0003

    Seasonal weather in Cyprus

To make the task easier, find out the nuances of the weather on the island by months.

    Spring

Spring in Cyprus begins much earlier than indicated in the calendar. The weather is mostly warm and pleasant. Light day lasts from 10 to 13.5 hours. March is considered the coolest spring month. At this time, it still rains in the resort, but the air temperature is confidently approaching +19 ° C – a great time for sightseeing trips. You can also walk along the beach, enjoy the sun and admire the surrounding panoramas. nine0003

With the advent of April, the weather noticeably improves – the sea is still quite cool, but the air temperature rises to +25°C. You can already sunbathe, some even swim. Outdoor recreation and excursions are also appropriate. From clothes you can take summer things, but for the evening you will need a sweater or a light jacket.

The full tourist season in Cyprus starts after May 15th. The thermometer readings reach +30°С, the water warms up to +20…+22°С. The resorts of the country are open – we advise you to visit Paphos, Limassol, Ayia Napa and one of the most popular – Protaras. nine0003

    Summer

Monthly weather in Cyprus in summer does not depend on the region. It is hot all over the coast, but the capital Nicosia, Famagusta and Kyrenia are especially affected. You should not count on long walks and excursions under such weather conditions. But the beach holiday will be in full swing.

Summer on the island starts from the 20th of May, when the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea reaches +22°С, and the air warms up to all +30°С. The same indicators are observed in June, while July and August are “pleasant” with extreme +35-40°C. Due to the low humidity of the air and fresh sea breezes, they are felt easier than in Europe, but the sun is very active – you can easily get burned. This advice should be taken especially seriously by those traveling with a child. The children’s body is sensitive to high temperatures, so your vacation may be overshadowed by the baby’s poor health. To prevent this from happening, do not forget to use sunscreen. For children – not less than +50 SPF, for adults – from +30. Also bring a wide-brimmed hat or umbrella for walking. nine0003

The dry Cypriot summer lasts almost until the end of October. In addition to a beach holiday in the warm months in Cyprus, you can climb the Troodos. It is colder there than below, and there is snow at the top. As for the coast, Paphos and its surrounding villages are considered the coolest resort on it. But the water in the sea there is also not so hot. Daylight hours are 14 hours. The most sunny days are in July (22). The remaining 2 months lag behind quite a bit (21 each).

    Autumn

Autumn weather on the sea of Cyprus is not at all like the velvet season we are used to. In the first 2 months it is dry, warm and sunny. +25…+30°С are clearly felt in the air during the day. By evening, breathing is much easier. At the beginning of autumn, water indicators are kept at +24°С, in October – +21°С. The autumn months are considered the best period for a leisurely vacation. You can enjoy nature, observe its changes and take a quiet stroll through the main tourist attractions. nine0003

With the advent of November, the weather gradually deteriorates – there are still warm days, but the sea is already getting colder. The ranks of tourists are thinning: it’s time to drive through the villages, buy the famous Cypriot wines, as well as visit Paphos, Amathus, Larnaca, Kourion and Polis. The distances between settlements are small, so you can safely get from one part of the island to another in 2-3 hours. In different months, the sun shines from 12 to 9 hours a day (data are listed in descending order).

Note: Cavo Greco is a natural attraction in Cyprus.

    Winter

Although the winter season is mild, the sea temperature in Cyprus barely reaches +15°C, so only walruses swim here. As for the air, during the day the thermometer stops at + 15 … + 17 ° С, at night it drops to + 5 … + 10 ° С. It also rains in winter, but mostly the sun shines. The wettest weather falls on the first 2 months. January is considered the most windy and coldest. Light day lasts from 8 to 9hours.

There are no frosts on the island at all. Snow falls only in the Troodos mountains and lies until the end of March – this wave is enough for skiing and other winter sports. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, at the end of January, active flowering of orchids begins in Cyprus. In February, fields and mountain slopes are covered with many different flowers and juicy fresh green grass. Popular places to stay during the cooler months are the mountains, the capital and Limassol. nine0003

When to go on vacation to Cyprus?

As you can see, you can go to Cyprus in any month, so be guided by what kind of vacation you need. If you plan to do a lot of walking and want to get a tan, go on vacation in April. You can swim already at the end of May – the sea is still quite refreshing, but this does not stop either adults or children. In the summer months there are no restrictions – the water is very warm, it’s hot outside. But you need to book flights and hotels in advance. During peak periods, seats fill up quickly and prices skyrocket. September and early October are perfect for lovers of the velvet season. The local sun still pleases with warm rays, but they are no longer as hot as in summer. Another big plus is the reduction in prices for vacations. nine0003

If we take the low tourist season, long walks, sightseeing tours and skiing are ideal for it. By the way, all winter tours are focused on this type of recreation. We recommend visiting the Akamas Nature Reserve (located on a peninsula near Paphos), the ancient ruins of Kourion near Limassol, Kolossi Castle and the Kykkos Monastery in the mountains.

Another important reason to travel to Cyprus in winter is the New Year holidays. On the island, they begin on December 23 – at this time, Christmas trees are set up in the squares, around which folk festivals are organized and fireworks are launched. Also in February, there are festivities and carnivals that precede Lent. The main venues for these balls are Limassol and prestigious Paphos. If you are lucky enough to visit such a holiday, be sure to try the legendary wines and Cypriot cuisine. Another annual carnival takes place in Limassol in March and lasts for 10 days. At this time, the city is decorated with festive installations, and local residents dress up in medieval costumes and masks. Dances are organized on the old square, and children’s and adult parades pass through the streets.

8 Winter Sun Destinations – Marriott Bonvoy Traveler

For a dose of winter sun, you might choose one of Europe’s balmier pockets, venture to the reliably blue-skied Middle East or even make your way to the blissfully warm embrace of South Africa. Here are eight fantastic destinations for some winter downtime, filled with beautiful beaches, culture-rich activities and delicious cuisine.

Take full advantage of Dubai’s temperate sweet spot

Between November and April, Dubai’s beaches of golden sand are an inviting prospect (Photo: Getty Images)

With temperatures in the mid-20s°C between November and April, it’s no wonder the UAE is such a tempting winter-months prospect – it’s both warm enough to sunbathe and mild enough to explore. From its golden-sand beaches and world-class shopping to unique sights such as the stunning Museum of the Future and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, Dubai’s attractions can happily sustain a visit of any length – whether you’re visiting for a week, a fortnight or just a weekend.

For something a little different, strike out into the desert for a dune safari, which come in many forms – perhaps you’ll drift over the landscape in a hot-air balloon, plod through the sand on a camel or ‘bash’ those dunes in a buggy. With access to Jumeirah Beach, Le Royal Méridien Beach Resort & Spa is the perfect urban base or, for easy access to desert experiences, book into the indulgent Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah. Another great place to stay in Dubai is Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, where you can dine on the sand at beach restaurant Senor Pico.

Enjoy Europe’s sub-tropical paradise in Tenerife

The stunning Playa de las Teresitas is just one of Tenerife’s sixty or more beaches – and you can enjoy it even in the winter months (Photo: Getty Images)

Tenerife basks in temperatures of 20°C and above throughout the winter months – the perfect weather to sample the island’s sixty-plus beaches, from white-sand Playa de las Teresitas to golden-hued Playa de la Tejita. If you want to get even closer to the water, take a whale-watching trip – humpbacks visit Tenerife in winter, too. Another unforgettable activity that will get you close to nature is hiking through the volcanic landscapes of the Anaga Mountains, an atmospheric realm of misty forests and ancient ferns.

You’ll wake to views of that wildlife-rich ocean at The Ritz-Carlton, Abama on Tenerife’s west coast. For a more urban experience, consider AC Hotel Tenerife in capital Santa Cruz.

Pick the perfect time to visit Morocco

In the height of summer, Morocco can be sweltering, but February and March’s 20°C temperatures are perfect for exploring (Photo: Getty Images)

February and March are the best bets for a winter trip to Morocco. With the mercury hitting 20°C and above, it’s an ideal time to discover three of the country’s most fascinating cities. Start in Marrakesh and its ancient walled medina, a bewitching warren of alleyways, souqs and squares. Simply wander at your own pace to encounter everything from craftsmen making brass lamps and leather slippers to beautifully restored mosques, riads and palaces. You’ll not miss Jemaa el-Fnaa, a vast square that comes alive with food stalls and street performance after sunset. Just outside of the medina, be sure to call into beautifully restored Bahia Palace, with stunning marquetry and painted woodwork on display. Pool-side at Le Méridien N’Fis is an ideal place to relax afterwards.

Fes offer just as many Arabian Nights-style wonders in its medieval heart, as well as the unique spectacle of its leather tanneries. Recharge at opulent Fes Marriott Hotel Jnan Palace, perhaps with a mint tea by the pool.

Finally, spend a while in capital Rabat. Its wide boulevards, manicured Andalusian gardens
and breezy coastal location make a refreshing change after Fes and Marrakech. Rabat Marriott Hotel enjoys a superb location in the heart of the Moroccan capital.

Embark on a sun-drenched trip to vibrant Tel Aviv

From the beachfront to the winding lanes of Jaffa, Tel Aviv’s attractions bask in 20°C temperatures come early spring (Photo: Getty Images)

Tel Aviv is a city constantly on the move, with exciting new bars, restaurants and cultural sites opening with thrilling regularity. It rarely gets truly cold even in the depths of winter, but visit from March onwards and you’ll discover this energetic scene – as well as the city’s 14km-long beachfront – while enjoying pleasant temperatures of 20°C and above. You might take Tel Aviv as a jumping-off point to explore some more of wider Israel’s many attractions, from the ancient, storied city of Jerusalem to the legendary waters of the Dead Sea.

There are lots of great places to stay in Tel Aviv: Publica Isrotel, Autograph Collection, a boutique hotel with a rooftop pool, and The Jaffa, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Tel Aviv, a beautiful reimagining of a nineteenth-century hospital, are two of the best. From the latter, you’re within easy walking distance of Jaffa’s historic harbour and lively flea market – perfect places to take the pulse of the city while enjoying some shawarma and arak in the sunshine.

Embrace Cape Town’s warm welcome

To visit South Africa, you barely have to leave your time zone, but you definitely leave the winter weather behind (Photo: Getty Images)

Visit Cape Town between December and March and you’ll find it bathed in sunshine. For two very different perspectives on the city, catch the glass cable-car up Table Mountain and view it from on high, then take a boat trip from the Victoria & Albert Waterfront to see it from the ocean. The Waterfront is a lovely place to stroll afterwards, with plenty of boutiques, restaurants and bars. And don’t miss the chance to tap into the city’s craft-beer scene – you’ll soon find a favourite new tipple in one of its breweries.

With its rooftop pool, Cape Town Marriott Hotel Crystal Towers is a great option when visiting the city during this period of at least 25°C warmth, while stylish The Westin Cape Town is another terrific option, with spacious rooms and memorable views of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head and Signal Hill.

Soak up everything that sunny Cyprus has to offer

You can bank on enjoying temperatures of around 16–20°C in Cyprus even on a winter break (Photo: Getty Images)

The short flight time is just one of the many reasons that the Mediterranean island of Cyprus is so attractive as a winter break; that temperatures will be hovering around 16–20°C is another, with things starting to warm up from March onwards. With its tranquil spa and six fantastic restaurants, Parklane, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa makes a great base.

Beyond the beach, a great way to see the island is on a jeep safari. You’ll bounce through mountain villages, stop for gorge hikes and spend time at some of Cyprus’s many archaeological sites. Included in most itineraries are visits to the UNESCO-listed Agios Ioannis Lambadistis Monastery, which dates back to the eleventh century, and the village of Omodos, famous for its wineries and lace-making.

Bask in Oman’s glorious winter warmth

December to February is a beautifully temperate time to discover highlights of Oman’s landscape like Wadi Shab (Photo: Getty Images)

Come to Oman between December and February and you’ll get to explore this land of incredible landscapes – all wind-whipped deserts and mountains riven by gorges – in temperatures of around 25°C.

Muscat is an ideal base. Take palatial Al Bustan Palace, a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, the smart Sheraton Oman Hotel or stylish W Muscat as launching pads for day trips out of the capital. Swimming in the natural pool of Wadi Shab, surrounded by red-rock cliffs, is a special experience – and particularly welcome after the hike you’ll take to get there. For more water-based adventures, take a dhow cruise on the Arabian Sea and watch dolphins leap around the prow as the sun sets.

Lounge on Egypt’s gorgeous beaches

Enjoy the beaches of Egypt’s Red Sea coast in gorgeous sunshine, even during the European winter (Photo: Getty Images)

Winter is one of the best times to visit Egypt, with temperatures rarely dipping below 25°C on its Red Sea coast. It’s perfect weather for lounging on the country’s many beaches, and there are plenty of opportunities to get active, too – perhaps snorkelling, diving or taking a boat trip on the beautifully clear waters. Book into Sheraton Sharm Hotel and you’ll have access to a private beach as well as an outdoor pool.

For a totally different Egypt experience, spend some time in capital Cairo, which offers unmissable experiences galore, from the awe-inspiring Museum of Egyptian Antiquities to the fantastic artisanal shops at the Khan El-Khalili Bazaar. Cairo is also a good starting point for cruises along the Nile. With a vantage point looking right over the famous pyramids, Le Méridien Pyramids Hotel & Spa enjoys one of the best locations in the city.

5 of Europe’s Weirdest Christmas Traditions

The day after the winter solstice is added from the evening

MOSCOW, December 24 – RIA Novosti. After the winter solstice, the Sun may rise even later than before it, and the length of the day gradually increases in the evening due to the higher speed of the Earth around the Sun. This was told to RIA Novosti by the head of the Department of Astrometry and Time Service of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute of Moscow State University (GAISh), Doctor of Science Konstantin Kuimov.

The winter solstice, from the point of view of astronomers, is the moment when the Sun reaches its minimum declination, that is, it is at the lowest angular height above the horizon. The solstice took place on December 21 at 23.28 UT, on December 22 at 02.38 Moscow time. nine0005

According to Kuimov, after the solstice, the daylight hours begin to increase, but this does not happen evenly, and not from “both sides” – first, the moment of sunset is pushed back in time.

“If you look at the table of sunrises and sunsets, you will see that despite the fact that the length of daylight hours increases, sunrise is a little later for the first few days, and sunset is also a little later. They say that the day is added in the evening” – said the astronomer.

So, on Friday the Sun in Moscow rose at 08.58 and will set at 15.59, and on Saturday already at 08.59 and at 15.59, respectively. Over the next few days, sunset will move about a minute a day, and sunrise will “stand still” at 08:59.

“This happens because the Earth rotates around its axis at a certain speed, but in winter it is close to the Sun and moves in orbit a little faster than in summer. The annual movement of the Sun in the sky is somewhat faster than in summer, and, combined with the daily movement , this gives such an effect,” Kuimov explained. nine0005

The Earth’s orbit, although very close to circular, has a noticeable eccentricity (the degree of elongation of the ellipse), it has a point as close as possible to the Sun – perihelion, and as far as possible – aphelion. According to Kepler’s laws, a body moving in an elliptical orbit has a greater speed at points close to the central body.

“That’s why it turns out that the Sun moves a little faster across the sky in winter, and a little slower in summer,” the agency’s interlocutor said. nine0005

According to him, the Earth is at perihelion around January 3rd, and at aphelion around July 3rd. The date can change by a day or two, because the movement of the moon also affects the distance, the scientist added.

Kuimov noted that the ellipticity of the earth’s orbit affects the climate: when in the northern hemisphere winter – the Earth is closer to the Sun, and in summer – further, which somewhat softens the difference between the seasons in the northern hemisphere and somewhat increases – in the southern.

Because of the perturbations of the planets, in 100 thousand years the situation will be reversed. The perihelion point makes about one revolution every 200 thousand years. nine0005

“The difference in distances between the Earth and the Sun in winter and summer is 0.3% -0.4%. The illumination decreases with the square of the distance, and the difference can already reach 6%, and this is already a noticeable value. After about 100 thousand years, these 6% could cause noticeable climate change,” the astronomer said.

According to him, some experts believe that this is one of the reasons for regular glaciations, although only this astronomical reason should change the climate in different hemispheres in different directions. nine0005

Myths about the winter sun: hide or walk?

Myth #1: There is little sun in winter, so you don’t need sunscreen

First, let’s understand what sunlight is. Ultraviolet radiation is 95% UVA rays, which provoke a reaction of melanocytes – skin cells that produce the pigment melatonin. This provides a bronze tan, but provokes skin aging. The remaining 5% is UVB rays, which help produce vitamin D but cause redness and burns. nine0005

Thick clouds “extinguish” part of the UVB rays. But UVA rays calmly reach the Earth’s surface, which means that skin needs to be protected from them even in cloudy weather. Cosmetologist Marina Plieva believes that SPF cream can be neglected in December and January, especially if you are not going to spend the whole day outdoors.

“But from February 1, the solar radiation becomes more and more intense – from this moment on, the skin must be protected constantly. It is especially necessary to protect the face after peelings, laser resurfacing and other aggressive procedures that temporarily aggravate skin sensitivity. It is extremely undesirable to go out with “bare skin” at this time, even sunburns are possible. nine0005

Beautician Arina Chanova explains how to determine when it’s time to take out the sunscreen.

“The activity of the sun is indicated by the ultraviolet index – data on it can be found on sites with weather forecasts. With low or medium values, you can do without a cream with SPF.

Don’t leave your lips unattended – a moisturizing stick with SPF should always be with you, regardless of gender and age. Frost and sun dry out already thin skin – as a result, cracks and inflammation may appear. nine0005

Myth #2: SPF 15 in cosmetics is enough to protect the skin

Even the most generous make-up, consisting of a base, tonal foundation, blush and powder, does not completely protect the face. The American Academy of Dermatology has determined that an SPF of at least 30 is required to guarantee sun protection. Anything below is just a nice bonus.

“The sun protection factor listed on the package is the amount of time you can spend in the sun without fear of getting burned. SPF 10 or 15 only protects for 1-1.5 hours.” nine0005

The method of applying sunscreen is also important. Ideally, the sunscreen should be the last layer, after moisturizing and decorative cosmetics. When you rub or brush on powder, lotion or cream, the previous protective layer is destroyed. It is not fatal if the first was a colorless make-up base. But if you are used to taking on a UV cream first, you should reconsider the order of application.

It is believed that the powder contains zinc oxide particles that cope with sun protection. This is not entirely true: powder particles spread unevenly over the skin and fall off during the day. Even if you apply a thick powder, this layer will allow UVA and UVB radiation to pass through.
nine0004

Myth #3: A hat is enough to protect your hair in winter

Even if you always have a hat with you, the ends of your hair are usually left unprotected. For them, you can and should choose leave-in care with SPF and panthenol, almond, shea, macadamia, vitamin E oils. Conditioning additives in such products will make your hair soft and shiny.

To prevent hair from becoming frizzy and electrified, hairdresser Marina Kobzar advises choosing the right shampoo.

nine0002 “The sun protection factor listed on the packaging is the amount of time you can spend under the sun without fear of getting burned. SPF 10 or 15 only protects for 1-1.5 hours.”

If the environment has already harmed the hair, professional procedures will help: Botox, keratin straightening, Olaplex, body wrap. Marina Kobzar explains: “Such procedures help to “imitate healthy hair”, that is, the cuticle scales adhere to the hair shaft, making it smooth and shiny. It is always easier to take care of such hair, it does not delaminate, does not fluff, moisture does not evaporate from them. nine0005

Myth #4: You can take a tanning bed to make up for your lack of vitamin D

Dermatologists and skin cancer experts believe that exposure to UV rays is harmful and damages the DNA of skin cells.

Solariums are equipped with UVA lamps, which not only give a bronze tan, but also provoke aging and dehydration of the skin. If you choose a tanning bed with lamps that have a UVB spectrum, there is a chance to benefit. However, the risks of tumors, unfortunately, do not disappear. nine0005

In order for vitamin D to be synthesized in the skin under the influence of UVB rays, a 20-minute walk in the fresh air is enough. The shortage can also be filled through the diet: replace cutlets with red fish, and pate and sausages with tuna, herring, cod liver and sardines. Don’t forget mushrooms, herbs, beans, fortified milk, and egg yolks.

If the tuna and spinach salad doesn’t appeal to you, you can buy food supplements.
