Your refund rights if a flight is delayed or cancelled due to bad weather

Dozens of flights were cancelled at Heathrow on Monday as icy fog affected traffic at the UK’s busiest airport.

More than 12,000 passengers faced disruption as the temperature fell to -8°C, with Aer Lingus, Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, SAS and Swiss among the airlines cancelling services.

Flights to European destinations and long-haul services to Miami and New York were among the cancellations.

The “reduced flow rate” at Heathrow had been lifted by lunchtime on Monday, although more than 20 flights departing later in the day were cancelled.

Here is what you are entitled to if your flight is cancelled or delayed.

What are my rights if my flight is disrupted?

Passengers have a right to a refund or to be rebooked on another flight to their destination if their service is cancelled.

You may also be entitled to accommodation, if required, and food and drink.

Further compensation for cancellations is unlikely, however, if restrictions on air traffic fall under an “extraordinary circumstance”.

Coby Benson, flight delay solicitor at Bott and Co, told i: “Delays and cancellations caused by air traffic control restrictions are usually considered an ‘extraordinary circumstance’ and therefore do not qualify for compensation.

“The exception is if an airline has failed to take ‘reasonable measures’ to avoid disrupting the passenger’s journey. For instance, airlines should offer to re-route passengers on alternative flights, even with another airline, however they often fail to do this.”

Airlines also have a responsibility to get you to your original destination if your flight is diverted.

What happens if I request a refund?

You will waive your other rights if you opt to get your money back.

Airlines are permitted to offer you a refund in vouchers, rather than cash. However, passengers are entitled to insist on a monetary refund.

More on Travel

Will the weather cause further disruption this week?

The cold snap is expected to last until later this week. However, temperatures around Heathrow are not forecast to drop below -1°C.

Jonathan Vautrey, operational meteorologist at the Met Office, told i: “High pressure will remain in charge across southern areas of the UK for the next few days, keeping winds light. Where this happens in combination with clear skies overnight, there is the chance of a sharp frost and freezing fog patches forming on Monday night.”

He said that the main risk areas were along a corridor from The Wash and the Midlands down to southwest England.

“Cloud that has pushed into southeast England today, including across parts of London, will reduce the risk of freezing fog from forming in this region overnight,” he added.

“Further patches of fog could develop throughout the coming week where these conditions occur again. However, temperatures are likely to return closer to average for the time of year.

Cheap places to fly to from Manchester for some winter sun

February is easily the worst months of the year. If you’re not still traumatised from cutting down on everything you enjoyed in January and trying to fill booze-free weekends with something more meaningful than happy hour, you’re berating yourself for failing at your new year’s resolutions already. It’s cold, it’s dark, and summer seems miles away, so there’s no better time to book a holiday.

Although February isn’t known for being the hottest of the year for short haul flight destinations, temperatures are still reaching around 20º in the likes of Cyprus, Malta and Morocco, all of which are included in our list of the cheapest places to fly to from Manchester for some winter sun.

From exploring the rolling hills of Austria’s ski slopes to gorging on plates of lamb tagine in Marrakech, all of the below cities and countries cost less than £200 to get to in February this year.

Read on for our list of cheap places to fly to from Manchester airport.

A winter evening in Vienna. Image: Vienne Tourist Board.

Vienna

We’re starting off with somewhere that, admittedly, isn’t the warmest in January, but winter sun doesn’t always mean bikinis and Pina Coladas. Austria is a country that’s celebrated for its love of the outdoors, from panoramic mountain ranges to crisp Alpine lakes.

It’s also got some breathtaking architecture to explore – especially in capital Vienna. A destination known for its art, music and culture, Vienna is also home to Schöenbrunn Palace, one of Austria’s most important cultural assets. The grandiose building was once built as an imperial hunting lodge for Emperor Joseph I. As you can imagine in any home fit for someone of his stature, you’ll find gold accented furnishings, symbolic high ceilings and unflattering self portraits, as well as a whole load of history to be learned.

If you’re looking for places to wine and dine in the city, Austria’s national tipple is Marillenschnaps, a brandy-based beverage that’s distilled from apricots – get it on your list. But, if you’re looking for a specific restaurant to book whilst you’re there, Vienna’s Skopik and Lohn is a contemporary eatery loved for its traditional dishes and laid-back ambience.

Zagreb

Next up, flights to Croatia are insanely cheap at the moment, meaning that you can get there and back for less than an open return ticket to York. The temperatures are similar to Austria at the moment, sitting around the 10º mark, but it’s certainly better than another week of drowning in Manchester rain.

Zagreb is the cheapest place to get to in the country, a city known for its captivating Austro-Hungarian architecture accented by yellow and white palace-like structures that confidently stand above you on the street. There’s tons to see and do in Zagreb, most notably paying a visit to the Museum of Broken Relationships, where you hopefully won’t see a regrettable framed picture of you and your ex.

The museum is truly one-of-a-kind and showcases a huge collection of items dedicated to failed love. Exhibits include items such as belly button lint (I’m not joking here) and even an axe – which I’d love to know the story behind. While you’re there there are plenty of restaurants serving up traditional Croatian peka – a stew comprising either octopus, lamb, veal or chicken and cooked underneath a terracotta or iron lid.

Paphos

As Cyprus is situated in the Middle East, it goes without saying that we’re finally getting to the good stuff here – some proper warm winter sun. Around this time of year, temperatures usually peak at around 20º across the country, which can feel like a comforting hug especially when you’re getting six hours of strong sunshine a day.

Paphos, the birthplace of ancient Greek goddess Aphrodite, is one of the cheapest places to fly to in Cyprus from Manchester this winter. The city has an idyllic combination of culture, history and escapism and you’ll be spoilt for choice if you pay it a visit, with the famous Adonis Baths our top pick for whilst you’re there. A peaceful two-tiered waterfall with swimming areas, mud therapy, and statues of another Greek god Adonis adorn the solitary spa, allowing anyone fortunate enough to pay it a visit a complete mind and body detox.

The old town is also jam packed with dainty market stalls selling Paphos-themed trinkets and restaurants serving up freshly caught seafood, including the Ouzeri Restaurant at the Almyra Hotel. This comes highly recommended as it focuses on the local cuisine with dishes such as lobster pasta and seafood orzo.

Flights: from £89pp return based on Sunday 5 – Sunday 12 February

Panoramic view across Athens. Image: Athens Travel.

Athens

Greece is another country with an all year round Mediterranean climate, meaning that even in February you’re likely to see a bit of sun. Athens is your best option, as the capital city is packed with history, museums and endless amounts of meat and cheese.

With open air theatres, 2,500 year old mythical structures and the fragrant Varvakios Agora indoor and outdoor market, Athens is bursting at the seams with things to do. The city is steeped in history and the hilltop Temple of Poseidon provides panoramic views of the coastline and a crumbling structure for fans of Greek mythology. This is the god of the ocean Poseidon’s palace, which was first built to guide sailors home safely. Not much of it remains now, but it sure does bring a tear to the eye against the backdrop of a Greek sunset.

And if you’re not going to Greece for the food, then why are you really there? Across Athens, there are plenty of traditional Greek delis serving plates of cheeses and cold cut meats, alongside regional dishes like fried aubergine and zucchini in a Cappadocian sauce served with pastourma – a highly seasoned, air dried cured beef. You’ll also find traditional dancers and music in most restaurants for a truly wholesome evening away from home.

Flights: from £176pp return based on Tuesday 7 – Saturday 11 February

Genoa

Genoa, Venice, Milan, Bologna – all of these cities are super cheap to get to across the next couple of months, which means days filled with pizza, pasta and religious art from Italy’s greats.

Italy’s long Mediterranean coastline offers golden beaches aplenty, all littered with candlelit bars and restaurants that still have their terrace doors held open even throughout the colder months. For anyone seeking a less touristy more traditional Italian experience though, Genoa is the perfect place to book as you’ll get a chance to explore art, architectural gems and a varied food and wine culture that will no doubt expose you to some new favourite dishes.

The city houses a picturesque fishing village which is the exact spot you’d expect to find on a postcard. Complete with pastel coloured houses, its pebble beach is the ideal spot for sunset stroll or to enjoy a stacked ice cream from the famous Antica Gelateria Amedeo, an incredible gelato restaurant with a vast colour palette of flavours.

A glimpse into Valletta’s breezeblock-style architecture. Image: What I Saw in Valletta.

Valletta

Valletta in Malta is a city full of character, after all it was built by the grand Knights of Malta as a way to ensure a better defence of the peninsula and island as a whole. The entire city is a UNESCO world heritage site with an unmistakable nod to a bygone era, complete with palaces and fortification that slot nicely into its now more contemporary everyday life.

Starting off your trip with a stroll down to the Triton Fountain, you’ll find yourself steeped in history and surrounded by the new Maltese Houses of Parliament, designed by Renzo Piano. As you explore further you’ll also stumble across the Old Theatre which was destroyed during WW2 and the stone faces that adorn many of the breathtaking buildings peering down at you, a trait Valletta parades with confidence.

After your big day of Carrie Bradshaw meandering through the streets of Valletta, you’ll want somewhere to enjoy a spot of traditional family made Maltese food. The city is known for being a hub of hospitality excellence, and one restaurant in particular, Noni sits at the heart of it all. With huge cast iron doors and stone vaults it’s the place to be if you want home cooked dishes from the heart. You’ll find octopus tagine, and a black tea dessert which is a desired sweet treat.

The Millennium Bridge in Podgorica. Image: Podgorica Today.

Podgorica

Yes, that’s right, a mere £25 to get to Montenegro this Winter, a picturesque part of the world that has travellers returning time and time again. The country is unique in that it’s situated in-between four climatic zones, which essentially means that even on a warm summer’s day you’ll be able to jump aboard a Montenegro day trip to a snow capped peak.

In winter, several ski resorts operate where you can drink endless cups of morning Domaca coffee ahead of the slopes, as the January sun strokes your rosy cheeks. In Podgorica, the largest city in Montenegro and the cheapest to get to this winter, you’ll get a chance to explore the city’s brutalist architecture – post-war structures that were designed post WW2 after the city was severely bombed.

Podgorica is also overrun with hidden gems. Coffee shops tucked away underneath bridges, bookshops frequented by local artists, and loads of incredible street art that you can properly explore by following the city’s map trail. It also has its own Millennium Bridge, but this one isn’t stormed by Geordies crossing over the ever-loyal River Tyne, it’s one of Podgorica’s landmarks and has breathtaking views of the city over the Morača River.

Marrakech

Morocco is definitely a destination for those in the mood for the kind of winter sun that requires only a t-shirt and sunnies. Temperatures peak at around the 20º mark in the North African country in February, and a return trip will cost you less than a meal out. Even better, you’ll be somewhere warm gorging on deep dishes of lemony tagine instead.

The winding streets of Marrakech are splashed with pops of colour from its characteristic tiles The real fun here lies in the markets where you’ll find hundreds of stalls selling everything from hand-painted pottery and leather goods to spices and hot, ready to eat food – if you’re tagined out, try tangia, a lamb shank stew cooked in an urn-like clay pot. If you prefer to dine at a table, the place is packed with restaurants serving platters of meat and fish, B’ssara, Harira and more and many of them have beautiful rooftop dining areas which you can pop up to for just a drink if you like – do bear in mind though that alcohol is forbidden in almost all of them.

You can also explore palaces, galleries mosques and the super popular Jardin Majorelle, a huge botanical garden featuring stunning royal blue art deco features at its centrepiece and an accompanying Yves Saint Laurent museum that is essential for anyone interested in fashion. Flights to Marrakech come in at around £150 per person in February, with the average hotel around £62 a night.

Be prepared for a lot of uphill walking in Lisbon. Image: Isa M.

Lisbon

Lisbon in Portugal is definitely a city for your travel bucket list. The sun is often shining at this time of year, and across the versatile tourist trap there’s plenty to see and do, starting off by paying some influential landmarks a visit.

In Lisbon, you’ll find the Torre de Belém a building that soars above the sea front and is a breathtaking example of Portugal’s fusion of artistic architectural styles. When you pop inside the UNESCO World Heritage site, the views from the watchtower span across the water and back into the past, as the scenery has remained unchanged for over 500 years.

No trip to Lisbon would be complete without Portugal’s pastry mascot the Pastel de Nata, too, and the city is churning out over 20,000 of the custardy treats every single day.

Barcelona

The UK’s favourite holiday destination, Spain obviously makes the list, especially when flights currently cost less than a Megabus journey to Birmingham. Flights to Palma, Alicante, Barcelona and Lanzarote have all been slashed in half, and the weather isn’t too shabby either – definitely warm enough for alfresco dining anyway.

Spain is often frequented for its white sandy beaches and crystal waters, not to mention its tapas selections that are made to be washed down with jugs of juicy Sangria, all of which you’ll find in Barcelona. A city packed full of art and fashion it’s a no-brainer when booking a winter getaway.

Barcelona is also home to the iconic architecture of Antoni Gaudi, cited as one of the greatest pioneers of Catalan Modernism. Marvel at his architectural works combining twisted structures with curved stones and organic shapes to create monumental constructions such as the famous La Sagrada Familia.

Strong shockwave & ‘huge roar’ reported in Gran Canaria was meteorite impacting ocean water

Meteorite impact Gran Canaria video

First, it ripped the sky over La Palma, La Gomera and Tenerife at great speed, like lightning that emitted colours with shades of green and red, to then cause such a roar over Gran Canaria that it was heard from many areas of the island before, finally, crashing in the sea, causing astonishment among the islanders who, at first, didn’t know what it was.

Scientists have confirmed that it was a meteorite which, although it is not the first to fall in the Archipelago, there are no precedents for what happened yesterday, as it was accompanied by tremors. Fortunately, the Emergency Services announced that there is no record that it caused injuries or material damage.

The incident occurred on November 30, 2022 just after 3pm, although the exact time of the impact recorded by the measurement systems installed by Involcan and the National Geographic Institute (IGN) recorded various readings between 3:16pm and 4:35pm.

The first alert the Emergency Services received came from the province of Tenerife, due to reports of a very fast green and red object in the sky.

But what really triggered all the alerts occurred immediately afterwards, when a huge roar was heard over Gran Canaria that residents of municipalities across the island including Agaete, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Brígida and Las Palmas demanded, with some concern, information about the noise and tremors.

Even the window panes and blinds trembled,” say those who phoned 112 to report it. Their testimonies regarding the sound spread too far to be, for example, an airplane breaking the sound barrier, which was one of the initial hypotheses.

Seismic activity was also ruled out, without leaving any room for doubt by scientists in less than an hour. While it was urgently verified that no one was in danger or that there had been any emergency associated with this phenomenon, everything pointed to an object arriving from outer space.

The Canarian Government gave an official statement in the afternoon that, indeed, the aforementioned “sonic boom was from a fireball that had crossed the sky over the Canary Islands and that has touched the atmosphere on this island, generating a powerful acoustic wave.

By then, the director of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, Rafael Rebolo, had already confirmed the information advanced by the Dean of the Canary Islands Press: it was a meteorite whose size is estimated, with natural precautions given the pressure of time, to be approximately a “meter in length” and whose weight would exceed “several tons.

Translation of the Facebook post:

The Canary Seismic Network, which operates INVOLCAN, has registered at 16:35 hours (Canary time) a seismic signal on the island of Gran Canaria caused by the passage of a powerful acoustic wave across the island.

The preliminary analysis of seismograms shows a form compatible with an N-wave, produced by the impact on the earth’s surface of a shock wave caused by an object, natural or artificial, moving in the atmosphere at its speed personality.

The following figure shows the seismogram recorded by the GART seismic station (Artenara). The N-wave is a signal that produces a crash wave that impacts the Earth’s surface and most likely its source was a solid. [Guide to Canarin Islands]

Dust over the Canaries | EUMETSAT

Record dense dust over the Canary Islands originates near the African coast.

An intrusion of fine Saharan dust covered the Canary Islands on 22-23 February 2020, causing general disruption in air traffic. This dust event was the worst this century, in terms of PM2.5 concentrations, for some of the islands.

Figure 1: Meteosat-11 Dust RGB with 925hPa streamlines overlaid, 23 October 23:00 UTC

Both Meteosat-11 and GOES-16 offered a seamless temporal view of the dust evolution, after it was raised from the African ground to about 1km height during its course westwards of the source. Figure 2 is an animation of the Meteosat-11 Dust RGB superimposed with 925hPa streamlines, that shows the dust (in magenta) as it moved to higher levels.

Figure 2: Meteosat-11 infrared Dust RGB, 22 February 01:00 UTC–23 February 23:00 UTC

Sentinel-3A, through its solar ocean colour instrument OLCI (True Colour RGB at 0. 86µm, 0.56µm and 0.44µm), also pinpoints the geographical origin of the dust, near the African coast (see Figure 3). With Sentinel-3’s high horizontal resolution of 300m, the dust could be seen dust rising from the ground under cloud, then reaching cloud-free areas.

The dust appeared in yellow hues, which is easier to distinguish over the ocean.

Figure 3: Sentinel-3A OLCI True Colour RGB, 10:40 UTC

The dust helped visualise the wind dynamics around the Canary Islands, usually hidden from satellites. The short High Resolution Visible animation (Figure 4) showed gravity waves in the leeward air, caused by the islands’ orography. In particular, a wake-like wave interference between Gomera and Tenerife, and the rings around Teide mountain in Tenerife, were obvious.

Figure 4: Meteosat-11 HRV, 23 February 14:27–17:27 UTC

The infrared-window, or Dust RGB, showed slight differences for GOES and Meteosat, due to the channel widths and centres, plus the ampler option for window channels in GOES.

Figure 5 compares Meteosat and GOES, in terms of perspective and channel width differences. The GOES signal for dust (magenta) shows a higher contrast than Meteosat due to the longer optical depth. The second example on Figure 5b shows a surprising hue shift from magenta to peach colour, due to different optical depths for both satellites, plus possibly to using three channels around 11µm in GOES rather than two of Meteosat.

Figure 5b: Comparison of Meteosat-11 Dust RGB with GOES-16 Dust RGB, 27 February 10:40 UTC

A night inversion may be gleaned from the Night Cloud Microphysics RGB (NCMP) of Meteosat-11 on 22 February at 05:00 UTC (Figure 6, centre panel). Figure 6 shows a grey fog or low-cloud patch further south along the coast (yellow arrow in middle pane. While the Dust RGB of Meteosat-11 (left) marked this patch, GOES-16 (right) showed no signs of it. On the other hand, other fog or low cloud between Gibraltar and Morocco (top right corner of images) showed off quite well on both images.

Also, both Dust RGB images illustrate the change in the blue shades over the circulation. It appeared in GOES-16 (green arrows in right panel) but not in Meteosat-11. This may be explained by the Dust RGB scheme used for GOES-16, which takes advantage from the availability of two IR-window bands around 11µm.

Figure 6: Dust and NCMP composites from Meteosat-11 (left and centre) and GOES-16 (right panel), 22 February 05:00 UTC.

There were two main dust waves, on 22 and 23 February. Both started in the morning after the dissipation of the night inversion under a low-level jet, which is a usual mechanism. The second dust release reached far out into the Atlantic and, encountering a deformation zone, part of it moved back eastward. This part arrived over the northern part of the Iberian peninsula on 27 February (where it moved off the FOV of GOES-16) (see the dust\s progress in Figure 7). The other parts of the dust circulated anti-clockwise around the low pressure system. More dust was injected on 24 February from the coast of Senegal and Mauritania, which remained mostly hidden by cloud.

Figure 7: GOES-16 Dust RGB, 22 February 06:00–27 February 12:00 UTC

By Tuesday 25 February the dust had spread southwards and mixed with condensation to form cloud. Figure 8 is a comparison of the standard Dust RGB from GOES with its channel at 2.24µm, which generally enables cloud or aerosol particle size estimation.

Alternative image recipes

Introducing solar channels in the standard recipe adds value and colour to the Dust RGB. The result pinpoints details, in this case of the structure of the dust cloud. It can only be used during the day however, which is a high price to pay. Two partly-solar alternatives are analysed: (a) solar information on the green beam (Figure 9, left) and (b) solar on green and blue (Figure 9, right). The ABI Channels used were 15-13, 5-6 and 13-0 in the left-hand image and 15-13, 5-6 and 3-1 in the right-hand image.

Figure 9: Comparison of two experimental mixtures of solar and infrared sources in the same RGB, 23 February 14:45 UTC.

The difference 1.6 µm–2.2µm at the green beam does not generate a good contrast between dust and clear areas (just 4% reflectivity in the difference, vertical axis on Figure 10). The small pixel differences (around 0.6K) between infrared channels, used as blue beam, indicate low flying dust.

Including the blue beam solar information from the channel at 0.55µm (left in Figure 9), creates a more detailed image for the dust distribution. The contrast of dust with ice cloud is now clear, but not if dust is compared with the oblique view of the clear ocean.

In a contrasted close-up of the GOES image (Figure 11, the orographic blocking effect on dust downstream of the islands was clear for Tenerife (T), and also Hierro and Gomera — pointing to low level flying aerosol.

Figure 11: Colour enhancement on the Dust RGB from GOES image, 23 February 14:45 UTC

The ocean surface reflectivity was lower in the wake of the islands, where it was sheltered from the wind. Northwest of Gran Canaria (GC) there was a cold cloud development of -45°C, but it did not interfere with the dust crossing below.
