Best Of The Best Places To Visit In February: Top 5 Getaways Most Recommended By Travel Experts

February is the perfect month to get away and escape the winter blues. From sunny beach destinations to snowy mountain towns, there are plenty of great places to visit around the globe. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a fun vacation with friends and family, there are plenty of unique destinations. We turned to travel experts to find the five best places to visit in February by looking for spots most frequently recommended.

Taking a trip in February can also help you keep your New Year’s resolutions going. After all, for many of us, sticking to those goals often comes down to time. As it’s a new year and month, you’d be astounded to know that many Americans will give up on healthy New Year’s resolutions before February, a survey finds. So if you’re hoping to shed some extra pounds, work out more frequently, or read more books — taking a trip in February can be just what the doctor ordered to ensure you keep to your goals.

If you can’t find what you’re looking for in this post, we’ve got many other options to give you some potentially great ideas for a winter getaway. For our skiers, be sure to check out our Best of the Best Ski Resorts in the U.S. list. If a beach trip is more up your alley, you can see our list of the Best of the Best Caribbean Islands. Is it a romantic getaway you need? Our Best of the Best Places For Couples in the U.S. may also do the trick. There are plenty others for you to browse in the StudyFinds Travel section.

All that said, in our search for the best places to visit in February, we examined 10 “expert” websites and sought the most suggested places. We also considered where these locations ranked on their list. Of course, you may entirely disagree with this — and that’s fine! Let us know which one is your favorite place or the one that is on your bucket list.

1. Death Valley, California

There’s a reason it’s called Death Valley. This city is well-known for its scorching hot temperatures and spectacular wildlife. That’s why one of the coldest months of the year is the best time to come see this unparalleled destination. “February is right in the middle of high-season for Death Valley, with mild and comfortable temperatures and the best chance to see beautiful desert wildflowers,” writes Vacation Idea.

“There are only eight Gold Tier International Dark Sky Parks in America, denoting a location so free of light pollution that the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye. One of them is Death Valley National Park, where the dry air and isolation make it seem like the universe is right on your doorstep. (It’s one of those rare national parks that is actually better in the winter, namely because you’ll be avoiding the scorching, 100-degree temperatures of the summer months.) Stargazing isn’t the only after-dark activity here, either: Take a moonlit horse ride, or dip in one of the pools filled by natural springs that keep the water at a balmy 84.5 degrees, even on a crisp winter night,” explains Conde Nast Traveler.

The quiet, desolate roadways of Death Valley might live up to its name in July, but in February, it’s one of the best places to visit in the world, experts say. (Photo by Johannes Plenio on Unsplash)

Global Grasshopper adds: “The national park in the valley is known for its unique wildlife such as desert bighorn sheep, lizards, and tiny pupfish, which live in pools saltier than seawater. The valley offers breathtaking views by day and stargazing across this mesmerizing landscape by night.”

2. Costa Rica

Known for its beautiful beaches, exquisite resorts, and lush coastlines, Costa Rica is surely a dream location for anyone who enjoys a warm weather getaway in the cold of winter.”February falls in the middle of Costa Rica’s dry season. Fill your days with hikes through the jungle, birdwatching in the cloud forest, visits to small sugar-cane and coffee plantations—and of course, plenty of time relaxing along the country’s storied coastlines,” explains Wendy Perrin.

The World Pursuit writes, “One of the most amazing natural destinations in the world Costa Rica is also a green powerhouse. It was the first country to go a full year on 100% renewable energy and still operate at around 99%. The country has made a clear prioritization to preserve its natural habitats with large swaths of the country protected wilderness zones or national parks.”

Conde Nast Traveler adds, “Costa Rica is always on our minds, but the country’s dry season (December to April) is probably the best time to visit. Sink into the pura vida lifestyle as you surround yourself with misty waterfalls, deserted beaches, and protected jungles.”

3. Paris, France

Don’t let the colder weather make you think that the City of Love isn’t one of the places to visit in February. “There may be a chill in the air, but that just means you’ll have to bundle up and stroll to a cozy café for a romantic Valentine’s Day visit. A cruise on the Seine, a visit to a museum, and a fabulous dinner are a few ways to enjoy the uncrowded winter season in the City of Lights,” Travel and Leisure says.

Conde Nast Traveler writes: “The City of Love should be an obvious pick in February, but potential suitors are all-too-often put off by the weather. Très grosse erreur. Anyone who knows the French knows they scarper tout de suite in summer, shuttering restaurants, frustrating foreigners and not giving a tiny French fig. Come instead in winter, when everything’s open, visitors are fewer, reservations easier and rates lower. All the best stuff is indoors anyway: cute, candle-lit bistros; echoey art museums; bo-bo (bourgeois-boho) bars. South Pigalle – or SoPo – still sizzles as one of Paris’s hottest spots, where the best table is at Bouillon Pigalle. The queue around the block is worth it – three-course meals with drinks here can cost less than €25, practically unheard of within the list of the best restaurants in Paris. ”

And as The World Pursuit notes, if you’re looking to make your first visit to Paris without all the hustle and bustle of tourist season, this is the time for you. “For one, there’s no worry about businesses and attractions shutting their doors and skipping town for summer vacation. Everything is open and it’s business as usual! This is also the time of year when there are fewer crowds and hotel rates are cheaper.”

To help you decide where to stay in Paris, be sure to check out our Best of the Best Hotels in Paris list.

4. Texas

Americans looking to escape to warmer climates, but not do the traditional trip to South Florida or Southern California may want to consider the biggest state in the U.S. There are so many great cities to visit that a statewide journey would be one you’d certainly never forget.

“Because of its historical importance to the state and its family-friendly theme parks, San Antonio attracts tons of families with kids during the summer break. However, Texan summer is almost unbearable with high humidity and temperatures exceeding 90F. The lesser crowds and pleasant weather make February a far better time to visit this incredible destination,” explains Global Grasshopper.

Vacation Idea writes, “Dallas is a modern metropolitan city in north Texas. It is the main cultural and economical hub of the region and draws many visitors each year to its museums, historical sites, world-class events, and other attractions. One of the city’s most famous sites is the location of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, which has been memorialized in the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza and the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Memorial. Those interested in art will find thousands of years of art covered in the Dallas Museum of Art and the Crow Collection of Asian Art. Dallas World Aquarium, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, and the Texas Discovery Gardens are all popular among families and nature lovers.

If North Texas and the Dallas/Fort Worth area is where you’re headed, Good Housekeeping suggests a trip to the suburban city of Grapevine. “From taking a glassblowing class at Vetro Glassblowing Studio & Fine Art Gallery where visitors can create their own one-of-kind pieces to taking popular wine tasting tours for a memorable time, Grapevine has something for everyone.”

5. Italy

Like Paris, if you thought Italy was one of the worst places to visit during its colder days, experts say the complete opposite. “While many tourists steer clear of Italy in February, that is exactly the reason many travel agents advocate that it’s the best time to visit. Prices are rock bottom in this off-season month, meaning that you can get affordable hotels, airfare, and travel packages,” Planetware explains.

Afar says Venice is also a great place for couples to spend some quality time together. “If you’re looking for a romantic Valentine’s Day getaway, consider this, too: In winter, the glamorously decrepit palazzi and canals are more swoon-worthy than in the sultry, often smelly summer—think a scene from a classic Henry James novel through the eyes of Merchant Ivory. You’ll also likely have the chance to splosh through flooded alleyways during acqu’alta, or high water, when the lagoons surge at high tide and the city’s slow sinking becomes more evident.”

“February in Italy’s busy Dolomites is among the region’s busiest periods. This is when the ski slopes are at their fullest, so it’s the perfect excuse to discover a different way of exploring the region’s UNESCO-listed mountains,” concludes Wanderlust.

You can check out our list of Best of the Best Places to Visit in Italy if you do in fact plan to visit.

weather, reviews, tours, where to go

February is the perfect month to visit the exotic country of Sri Lanka. Rainfall is low this month and temperatures are quite pleasant. True, in coastal areas the temperature rises above 30 degrees during the day, however, a pleasant sea breeze does not allow you to feel the intense heat. In addition, you can always swim in the Indian Ocean.
February in Sri Lanka is ideal for sightseeing and hiking. In addition, some holidays and festivals are held this month, so you will not be bored here. nine0004

Weather in Sri Lanka in February

In general, the weather in Sri Lanka in February is good, but, as in any other month of the year, there are areas on the island in which the weather differs for the worse. In February, the southern and western coasts of Sri Lanka are bathed in sunshine. The weather here is warm and fairly stable, with an average daily temperature of 30.3°C and minimal rainfall during the month. The monsoon dominates the northern and eastern coasts of Sri Lanka, so the weather here is unpredictable. Quite often in this area it rains, there are strong winds. The sun doesn’t shine as often here as it does on the west and south coasts, but you can still expect to get plenty of sunbathing time. nine0003 As far as the Cultural Triangle is concerned, the area has an average daytime temperature of 27.4°C, but the weather is still not very dry, with a chance of rain. For those who are going to visit the Nuwara Eliya area, we will say that in this area the weather is relatively cool due to the higher altitude (average daily temperature is 20.3 ° C), but mostly dry. So February is quite suitable for a visit to this region.

Excursions in Sri Lanka in February

In my opinion, February is the best month for excursions in Sri Lanka. At this time of the year, the weather is beautiful all over the island, so you can choose any excursion. The most popular excursions in Sri Lanka at this time are Tea route and excursion Kandy + Sigiriya , during which you will also visit the elephant orphanage, botanical garden, Dambulla temple and some other places.

Excursions in Sri Lanka

Where to relax in Sri Lanka in February Which resort is better to choose. In fact, most resorts in Sri Lanka offer good sunny weather in February, so you just need to know which regions of the island at this time of the year are not affected by the monsoon and choose one of the resorts in these regions. nine0003 Where is the best place to go in Sri Lanka in November? Personally, I would advise choosing resorts on the western or southern coast of the island.

The northern coast of Sri Lanka is characterized by a maritime tropical climate. In February, the average temperature here is 27°C and strong winds are always blowing. In addition, it often rains in the north of Sri Lanka in February. The ocean is relatively calm here, although some other months it can be even calmer.
In February, the east coast of Sri Lanka is influenced by the northeast monsoon, as waves rage here and it often rains. The humidity in this region is quite high. Because of this, temperatures in the region of 28-32 degrees sometimes seem unbearable. Personally, I see no reason to go on vacation to the east coast of Sri Lanka in February. nine0003 On the south coast, February is considered one of the “coldest” months, but in this case it can be considered as a plus, as other months can be very hot here. If you are thinking about where to go on holiday to Sri Lanka in February, then the resorts of the south coast should be among the first on your list of options. In addition to pleasant sunny weather, February on the south coast is also characterized by relatively low rainfall.
In Colombo and on the entire western coast of Sri Lanka, the weather is fine in February. Although daytime temperatures can rise to 32°C during this time, and February is considered one of the hottest months on the west coast, the weather here is dry. In addition, the sea breeze does not make you feel the heat. nine0003 As we said above, February is one of the best months to visit the central highlands of Nuwara Eliya. The weather here is usually pleasant with an average temperature of about 20 ° C. The humidity here is very low, so even with physical exertion it is very easy to breathe.
Visiting the Cultural Triangle of Sri Lanka in February is not a good idea. Located in the central lowlands of Sri Lanka, the region is one of the hottest areas of the island. Cooling monsoon winds from the coast do not reach this area. So do not be surprised that in February the temperature here can rise to 34 ° C. Even at night there is no cooling. In addition, it often rains in the region. nine0004

The best beaches in Sri Lanka in February

If you are looking for the perfect beach for swimming in Sri Lanka in February, then you should immediately forget about the beaches on the east coast of the island, because high waves form here due to strong monsoon winds . Only in small bays can you swim more or less safely.
Personally, I think that the best beaches in Sri Lanka in February are located on the south coast. The weather here is good, and the water temperature is about 28 ° C. Windless weather also affects the ocean, which is unusually calm in February in the south of Sri Lanka. So here you will find ideal conditions for diving, snorkeling and regular swimming. If you need beaches in Sri Lanka without waves in February, then you will find them in the south and southwest of the island. nine0003 The beaches of the western coast of Sri Lanka are also suitable for swimming, but you still need to follow the flags and the state of the ocean.

What to see in Sri Lanka in February

Sri Lanka has some unique festivals and celebrations in February. Sri Lanka celebrates Independence Day on February 4th. Everywhere in the cities there are processions and rallies, accompanied by dances, acrobatics and music. In the evenings, performances are held, which mainly talk about Sri Lanka’s long struggle for independence. On this day, all temples are decorated and open to visitors. nine0003 In addition to this holiday, there are many local festivals in Sri Lanka in February, but they are quite modest in scope.
February in Sri Lanka is great for visiting all the national parks. At this time, one of the most beautiful reserves is the Gal Oya National Park in the west of Sri Lanka. The Senanayake Samudra River and the reservoir fed by it are filled with water after the rainy season. Many elephants come here for watering and bathing. The rainforests in southwest Sri Lanka are also very interesting in February, as after the rainy season the entire rainforest wakes up. nine0004

Sri Lanka in February: reviews of tourists

Alina, Moscow
We rested in three hotels in Sri Lanka in February, so we managed to relax in Galle, Bentota and Colombo in two weeks. In all cases, the weather was excellent, but it was in terms of weather that I liked the Galle area the most. It was not as hot here as in other places, especially in Colombo. Most likely, the unbearable heat in Colombo is due to the fact that due to the development there is no breeze, so nothing softens the heat. By the way, during excursions to national parks the weather was not so hot. It was even colder in the mountains. nine0004

Denis, Tver
We originally planned to go to the Dominican Republic, but then we found out that it could be cool there in February. Therefore, we decided to choose Sri Lanka. Let me tell you right now that I didn’t go wrong. At least I like hot weather, although I don’t like high humidity. If you relax on the beach, then you almost don’t feel the heat, but you just have to move 300-400 meters from the coast, so you get into some kind of greenhouse. It was also quite hot on the tour, so we decided that one tour was enough, although the plans included a safari and a tour of the Cultural Triangle. nine0004

In Russia, winter is in full swing, and in the Kingdom of Thailand, February is just the perfect time for a vacation. Many Russians who have already rested or traveled around Thailand are happy to return here to visit the corners of this amazing country that they have not yet explored. Those who have not been to Thailand dream of visiting the Kingdom, basking in the hot sun, splashing in clear waters, at the resorts of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. nine0004

Well, who doesn’t dream in the dead of winter, when your body misses the warm summer terribly, get free from work in a cold metropolis for a couple of weeks and rush off somewhere far away, where it’s always summer, the sea, the beach and plenty of entertainment. The weather in Thailand in February mostly pleases tourists with warm sea and bright sun.

General information

February in Thailand experts refer to the so-called high season, which begins in December and ends at the end of March. In Russia, the management of many companies offer their employees to divide the required vacation into two parts, two weeks each, so you can safely take part of the vacation in February and relax in Thailand. This month, after a significant influx of vacationers coming to Christmas and New Year holidays, relative calm sets in, even in the most popular places of Pattaya, Koh Samui, Phuket, in hotel complexes and on the beaches of resorts it becomes freer. nine0004

Vacationers before a trip to Thailand sometimes ask themselves what seas the coast of this country is washed by. The central part of the Kingdom is washed by the waters of the Gulf of Thailand, which in turn belongs to the South China Sea, and the southern provinces are washed by the waters of the Andaman Sea. That is why the weather, at the same time, in different parts of the Kingdom of Thailand is slightly different. In the south of the country, in the resorts of the Andaman Sea, in February the monsoon season does not yet begin, the winds that blow from the southwest direction all spring, summer and part of autumn. On the islands of the Gulf of Thailand and the resorts of this part of the country, dry winds mainly blow from the northeast. nine0004

Air and sea temperatures in different parts of the country in February do not differ much. In the resorts of the Andaman Sea at this time of the year, the daily air temperature is from 29 to 33 degrees Celsius. At night, it drops slightly to 27, 29 degrees. The water temperature in the sea keeps around the clock from 28 to 29 degrees, the average air humidity is about 40%. Within the resorts of the Gulf of Thailand during the day the air warms up to 33 degrees. And at night, the coast of the southern part of the bay cools down to 25 degrees, northern to 18 degrees. The water temperature in the Gulf of Thailand, at this time, is from 25 to 28 degrees Celsius, air humidity is within 40%. nine0004

Regions

In the south of the Kingdom of Thailand in February, the most interesting places for your holidays will be several main areas. The island of Phuket is considered to be the most iconic place and the most visited by vacationers. All elements of the tourism industry, multi-star hotels with swimming pools, nightclubs, excellent restaurants, shopping and entertainment centers, equipped modern beaches are concentrated in this favorite place. Phang Nga Beach, with its clearest waters, a national park, famous temples, waterfalls, caves and numerous islands. nine0004

The Similan and Surin Islands are one of the most loved destinations in the world for divers, deep-sea divers, fishermen and kayakers. The cities of Krabi and Ao Nang are the most quiet and peaceful places on the entire coast of the Andaman Sea. In February, there are practically no rains in these areas during the day, more often they occur in small numbers at night, but by morning everything dries up. The water temperature in the Andaman Sea is constant due to the warm current passing here. nine0004

Important! Due to the sharp temperature difference in Russia and Thailand, the body acclimatizes for some time, wear summer hats, sun glasses, be sure to have the necessary amount of drinking water with you.

Many vacationers, traveling with families with children in February, spend their holidays in the resorts of the Gulf of Thailand for several reasons. Firstly, there are no less famous vacation spots here than in the southern regions of Thailand.

One has only to list some of them, even a person who is unfamiliar with the Kingdom has heard of them:

  • Pattaya
  • Hua Hin Resort
  • Koh Samui
  • Koh Chang

Secondly, many associate this decision with the fact that the Gulf of Thailand near the coast is not at all very deep. The sand here is the cleanest and the water flow is slow, well, why not an ideal place for swimming with young children.

The third reason is directly related to weather conditions, in February it is hot here only during the day, in the evening the temperature drops a little, it becomes comfortable to walk, and most importantly, breathing becomes much easier, which simplifies the acclimatization of the body. nine0004

The Kingdom of Thailand, due to its historical and geological features, is just a godsend for lovers of outdoor activities and travel.

In this regard, it is the northern provinces of Thailand that are very interesting for visiting, such as:

  • Chiang Rai
  • Chiang Mai
  • Mae Hong Son.

When visiting Thailand, do not miss the opportunity to take a few days to get acquainted with the sights of amazing beauty and landscapes created by nature itself in these original provinces. Unlike large cities, life in these small towns is calm and measured. nine0004

Details

These historical places are famous all over the world for their beautiful temples and mountain landscapes. Here you will see many small rivers with amazingly beautiful waterfalls, hot springs, caves and many other wonders of nature.

Here all the provinces are permeated with original ancient history, stories about legendary rulers, epics about the origin of cities and temples. To plan a trip to such attractive places, you need to know what the weather is like here in February, which we will discuss in more detail below. nine0004

The cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, in terms of weather in February, are slightly different from the main recreation areas on the coast of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. In these parts, the influence of the mountains is already felt.

In the provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, daytime air temperatures are about the same as everywhere else in Thailand, kept at 30 – 33 degrees Celsius, with air humidity of about 40%. But the heat lasts until about 17-18 hours, then begins to decline.

Evening is the most pleasant time, it is at this time that tourists love hiking and admiring the scenery at sunset. By night, the air temperature in the cities drops noticeably and closer to the morning reaches + 15 degrees. There is very little rain in the month of February in the provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, in other years there is none at all. nine0004

Tip! Consider in advance what clothes to take with you for a trip to these areas. Perhaps you should stock up on things for the cool evening weather.

According to tourists, children are very interested here. In addition to unusual attractions, boat trips along local rivers, visits to small villages of local tribes and elephant riding through the jungle and mangrove forests are common, the rest here is unforgettable.

A special place in terms of weather in February, as well as in general in winter, is occupied by the cities of Mae Hong Son and Pai. The province is located in a mountainous area and the climate here is very different from other parts of the Kingdom. You should not refuse a trip to these parts, the mountain landscapes here are simply mesmerizing, and the city of Pai, according to tourists, is considered the creative capital of Thailand. nine0004

It has been known since the time of the Lanna kingdom and has been marked on European maps since the seventeenth century. Here people of creative professions get their inspiration and muse. Mae Hong Son is famous for its famous lake located in the heart of the city. Local Thais consider this area their Switzerland. In February, daytime temperatures here do not rise above + 15 degrees, and at night they drop to 0, rarely lower.

Results

This is the only place in the Kingdom of Thailand where snow falls, the wealthiest residents of the country come here to relax and it is not uncommon to meet a cool car here.

United Arab Emirates
Arab fairy tale in a new way – this is how the emirates can be called – oriental flavor multiplied by the modern benefits of civilization – this is something. Each resort has first-class clinics and spa complexes where you can bask in mineral baths, various baths and baths, and a jacuzzi. Some places can boast of natural baths with year-round warm water.

Caucasian Mineralnye Vody
Health does not know the concept of the season, just as the famous resorts of the KMV – Essentuki, Kislovodsk, Pyatigorsk, etc. do not know it. Each thermal spring gives water of a special type, thanks to which it is possible to treat diseases of any organs and of any complexity in KVM.

Unforgettable February vacation in the tropics

Thailand

In winter, Thailand is transformed, freed from tropical heat and monsoons. Dry sunny weather reigns in the land of smiles, literally calling for exploration of the most beautiful temples, palaces, ancient ruins left over from long-vanished principalities and civilizations.

At this time, you can fry on the beaches of the Andaman Sea or settle in nightclubs, explore the range of Thai markets, party in amusement parks or look for more sophisticated pleasures for which the Thai kingdom is famous. nine0003

Goa

In February, you can go on excursions to ancient cultural sites and colonial monuments – the weather favors travelers and adventurers. And do not forget about the magic of Ayurveda – local magicians will save all the suffering and thirsty from any misfortunes. nine0003

Bali
Although Bali is equally warm and welcoming at any time of the year, in February the monsoon season rules in the island paradise – these are short rains that fill the air with moisture, which in hot conditions will not be to everyone’s taste. But for diving and excursions, with which the island itself and its neighbors are rich, there is no bad weather. So it’s time to go towards discoveries, especially since prices at this time are significantly “losing weight”.

Vietnam
Vietnam is rich in both resorts and climatic zones, and in any month of the year there are a couple of suitable places to relax, where you will find holiday happiness and bliss. In February, Phan Thiet, Mui Ne and Phu Quoc become such places, joyfully meeting tourists with a snow-white carpet of beaches and landscapes a la bounty. It offers boat trips, excursions to waterfalls, jungles and ancient temples.

Philippines
February is the peak of the dry season in the Philippines, and the familiar heat loosens the grip a little, pampering residents and visitors with refreshing breezes. What is especially pleasing is that in the winter months annoying typhoons recede from the islands, and most resorts are available for recreation. nine0003

The range of entertainment is very wide, from traveling along nature routes with visits to “wild” villages that have abandoned civilization, to visiting colonial villas, museums and, where without them – beaches.

Sri Lanka
Midwinter in Sri Lanka is the height of tourist passions, when rains and other vicissitudes of the climate do not bother vacationers and they can relax on the golden sands of the beaches or explore the tropical expanses of the island. Add to this an impressive cultural wealth and a classic Asian halo, plus an abundance of exotic fruits, the virtues of local cuisine, and an assortment of excursion routes. nine0003

Cuba
The beaches of Liberty Island are a vacationer’s dream. But beach expanses are far from the main asset of Cuba. The richest underwater world of the Caribbean, colonial monuments of the distant past and the legacy of the liberation revolution, rum and tobacco factories, exotic plantations, clubs, tropical panoramas, bars and clubs – and each element has a unique Cuban halo.

All conditions for tourism in Cuba are created – protected beaches, excursions, water sports, sea fishing, comfortable hotels – you just need to click your fingers and all the island’s treasures will fall at your feet. nine0003

Dominican Republic
What is the difference between winter and summer in the Dominican Republic? Nothing – all the same snow-white beaches, tropical heat, vast expanses for research and high-class hotels on All inclusive. In hotels, vacationers are entertained by tennis courts, golf courses, restaurants of all cuisines of the world, discos, bars … The country’s main resort is sunny Punta Cana with its luxurious coastline.

At the disposal of travelers are trips to distant islands, tours to waterfalls, tours of the capital, diving, watching dolphins, burning the taste of rum on the lips, trips to fruit plantations, passionate dances in local cabarets – and this is only a classic set, but the Dominican Republic is full of more original proposals. nine0003

Hot spots: where large-scale conflicts and wars are currently taking place in the world

Tensions between Taiwan and China remain one of the main topics covered by the world’s media. In parallel, there is news about renewed hostilities between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

Mass protests have also become more frequent around the world. We wrote about the loudest of them in recent times – in Sri Lanka, Karakalpakstan and Iraq – on the website.

In the new review, we talk about countries in which large-scale conflicts and hostilities are currently taking place. nine0175

Ukraine and Russia | Serbia and Kosovo | Palestine and Israel | Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia | China and Taiwan

Ukraine and Russia

On February 21 of this year, Russia recognized the independence of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and the Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR), and on the morning of February 24, an appeal was issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin about the beginning of the invasion of the territory independent Ukraine, which he calls “a special military operation in connection with the situation in the Donbass.” The President justified this with a statement about the need to protect the DPR and LPR and Russia itself, and also characterized Ukraine as a neo-Nazi state. nine0003

Putin’s allegations of an “eight-year genocide by the Kyiv regime” were refuted by both the European Union and the UN, and Western politicians accused the Russian president of lying. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky immediately announced the severance of diplomatic relations with Russia.

On the same day, in his official statement, the President of the Russian Federation promised that an attack on Russia would lead to dire consequences for any potential aggressor.

In parallel with the outbreak of hostilities, countries began to impose sanctions against Russia and individual Russian citizens. For example, at the end of February, the EU imposed sanctions against Peskov, Sechin and some Putin supporters. nine0003

On February 28, near the Ukrainian-Belarusian border in the Gomel region, the first negotiations began between Moscow and Kyiv. The media write about the deaths of civilians and attacks on cities in Ukraine. Also at the end of February, the first news appeared that the armed forces of Ukraine opened fire from multiple launch rocket systems at the Lohvinovo settlement controlled by the Luhansk People’s Republic. The message of the representative office of the LPR says that from 10:20 to 10:55 the Ukrainian military fired at the settlement three times. nine0003

Vladimir Putin says that Russia’s actions on the territory of Ukraine are a forced measure, and Moscow had no other choice.

On March 7, it became known that Russia had brought into the territory of Ukraine almost 100% of the armed forces concentrated on the border before the invasion. At this time, the third round of negotiations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation ended, but the parties could not reach an agreement.

One of the most high-profile events since the outbreak of hostilities was the appearance of journalist Maria Ovsyannikova live on Channel One with a No War poster and the inscription “Do not believe the propaganda.” In July, it became known about her detention, but later she was released. After her house was searched without the presence of a lawyer, the journalist could face imprisonment for up to three years. nine0003

On April 1, the LPR office reported that Ukrainian troops had shelled the village of Donetskiy in the Luhansk People’s Republic. 12 shells were fired from an artillery gun with a caliber of 122 mm.

By mid-April, the death toll of civilians in Ukraine had risen to 2000.

On April 19, the world media reported that the Russian military dropped a bomb on a hospital in Mariupol. According to People’s Deputy of Ukraine Serhiy Tarut, about 300 people, including children, were under the rubble. nine0003

On May 9, Zelensky published an appeal in honor of Victory Day: “Today we are at war and will not give up a single piece of our land to anyone. Today we celebrate the Day of Victory over Nazism, and we will not give anyone a shred of our history. We are proud of our ancestors, who, together with other nations, as part of the anti-Hitler coalition, defeated Nazism …. And very soon there will be two days of Victory in Ukraine. And someone will not have a single one,” the Ukrainian president said.

On the same day, in his address to the people, the President of Russia stated that the “military special operation” in Ukraine was the only way for Russia to “prevent aggression against its territory”: “The danger grew every day. Russia gave a pre-emptive rebuff to the aggressions. It was a forced, timely and the only right decision, the decision of a sovereign, strong, independent country,” Vladimir Putin stressed. In late May, Zelensky called for Russia to be declared a “terrorist state.” In early June, a message appeared that so far Kyiv did not see the point in negotiations with Moscow. nine0003

The number of refugees from Ukraine approached 7 million people.

By July 2, 2,265,057 people had been evacuated to Russia from Ukraine, the DPR and the LPR. According to information on July 9, 4.8 million people fled from Ukraine. On June 21, it became known that the United States would help Ukraine in investigating Russian war crimes by creating a special group.

On July 14, the Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa was attacked by Caliber cruise missiles fired from a submarine in the Black Sea. The EU condemned the missile strike, while Zelensky called the move an “open terrorist attack.” On July 16, Russia launched a missile attack on the Dnieper. nine0003

In early August, British intelligence made a statement about the approach of a new phase of the war in Ukraine. A report released by the Defense Ministry in London indicates that the heaviest fighting will shift to a nearly 350-kilometer front that runs parallel to the Dnieper from the outskirts of Zaporozhye southwest to Kherson.

On August 5, the Kyiv city prosecutor’s office reported that several officials were suspected of collaborating with the Russian Federation. On the same day, the mayor of Donetsk, Oleksiy Kulemzin, said that the building of the railway station of the Donetsk station caught fire as a result of shelling by Ukrainian troops. nine0003

Military expert Igor Koziy is convinced that with the current regime in Russia “it is impossible under any circumstances to sit down at the negotiating table. ” “If Putin and his entourage remain in power, no agreement can be concluded with them, because all agreements signed by this government are violated,” the expert said in an interview. By mid-August, data were published that since the beginning of the war, about 800,000 Ukrainians had lost their homes. This was announced by Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on the Organization of State Power Olena Shulyak. nine0003

On August 18, it became known that Turkey would participate in the restoration of Ukraine. The Memorandum of Understanding regarding the restoration of Ukraine’s infrastructure was signed by the Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov and the Minister of Trade of Turkey Mehmet Mus in the presence of the presidents of the two republics.

On August 20, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation accused the Ukrainian side of using chemical agents against Russian servicemen and civilians. According to the ministry, on July 31, some Russian servicemen were taken to a military hospital with signs of severe poisoning. nine0003

On August 24, the Independence Day of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during his address to the people, noted that the country is determined to fight to the end and will not try to negotiate with Russia out of fear.

On September 1, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced that the Ukrainian military tried to seize the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant (NPP), landing troops on the banks of the Kakhovka reservoir, three kilometers from the power plant and near the village of Vodiane. The ministry claims that these attacks were repulsed. nine0003

According to CNN, since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, by the beginning of August, the Russian armed forces have lost about 70,000-80,000 people. According to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), as of August 22, 13,477 victims among civilians in Ukraine have already been registered: 5,587 killed and 7,890 injured.

Political scientist about the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

As political scientist Zhumabek Sarabekov notes, the conflict in Ukraine is already becoming one of the most destructive in the recent history of world development. According to him, during this time, more than ten million Ukrainians became refugees. nine0003

“The economic damage of the war to the whole world is estimated at a trillion dollars. Ukraine bears the greatest losses, which, according to forecasts, may end the current year with a recession of almost 50%.
Judging by the military actions, both Russia and Ukraine are preparing for a war of attrition.

The peace process has also finally stalled, and in recent months there has been no progress on the diplomatic track,” Sarabekov notes.

According to the political scientist, the scale of destruction will only grow. Sarabekov also added that another serious challenge is related to the fact that the hostilities affect nuclear power facilities on the territory of Ukraine. There is a real risk of the beginning of large-scale nuclear pollution. First of all, we are talking about the situation around the Zaporozhye NPP. nine0003

Kosovo and Serbia

Kosovo is a partially recognized state in Southeastern Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula. According to the Serbian Constitution, the territory of Kosovo is part of the country and is part of it as the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, but in fact this state is not controlled by the Serbian authorities.

In 1988, the situation in Kosovo worsened. In Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic came to power, who initiated a referendum that significantly affected the autonomy of the Republic of Kosovo. They banned teaching, as well as television and radio broadcasting in the Albanian language. However, already in September 19For 91 years, the Kosovars held their referendum, which was boycotted by the Serbs living in the region.

As you know, the Republic of Kosovo declared its independence in 2008. The country was recognized by 92 UN member states, including the United States and most of the EU countries, but later 16 of them withdrew their recognition. Serbia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo and considers it part of its territory.

This year it all started on August 31, when the Kosovo authorities announced a ban on Serbian personal documents and Serbian car registration numbers from August 1. nine0003

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also confirmed that the Kosovo authorities plan to block entry to anyone who does not have Kosovo documents. Information about the readiness for such measures was also confirmed in the office of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti.

Kurti warned that the license plates of cars that did not pass the re-registration would be withdrawn. In his speech, he addressed the Serbs living in the north and explained in their native language that the announced measure was a response to the actions of Belgrade. nine0003

On the night of July 31-August 1, a tense situation grew in Kosovo. Armed special forces were sent from Kosovo, the police closed the border crossing, the Serbian population of Kosovo went to rallies, and air sirens also worked. Police forces and KFOR (Kosovo Force) were drawn to the bridge over the Ibar River in the city.

News began to appear in the Serbian media that alarms had gone off in ethnic Serb towns in northern Kosovo, and about 200 Albanians had converged on the bridge connecting the north and south of Kosovska Mitrovica. It is known that the Serbs began to erect barricades and blocked the main road between the city of Pristina and the village of Raska. Kosovo security forces and ambulances left for the scene. The Kosovo police on their social networks mentioned the shots from the protesters. In turn, the Serbian Ministry of Defense declared that they were not involved in these events. nine0003

Due to protests, the authorities of the Republic of Kosovo have decided to postpone the introduction of new entry rules for Serbian citizens until September 1st. This decision was made after consultations with the EU and US ambassadors.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, also stressed at a government meeting that, in addition to replacing car numbers, migration cards will be introduced. Belgrade reacted negatively to the decisions of Kosovo.

By the end of August, it became known that Serbia and Kosovo agreed on the free movement of citizens across the border – Belgrade and Pristina reached an agreement on identity cards. nine0003

Thus, Serbia has agreed to cancel its entry-exit documents for holders of Kosovo identity cards, and Kosovo has agreed not to introduce them for holders of Serbian documents.

However, there is still tension between the two countries over license plates on cars and trucks. Pristina is pushing for the abolition of Serbian license plates for everyone, including Serbs living in northern Kosovo.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić noted that the problem with the identity card was small, but the problem with license plates is much more complicated, and there were no agreements on it yet. Meanwhile, Serbia still does not recognize the independence of Kosovo. nine0003

Political scientist on the conflict between Kosovo and Serbia

Political scientist Zhumabek Sarabekov characterizes the problem of Kosovo and Serbia as a relatively frozen conflict.

“The likelihood of a resumption of direct armed clashes between the parties to the conflict is relatively low. Both Serbia and Kosovo are closely integrated into the European community. Serbia, as you know, seeks membership in the European Union, like Kosovo,” Sarabekov said.

Palestine and Israel

The disagreement between Palestine and Israel, which is an integral part of the wider Arab-Israeli conflict, has been going on since the middle of the 20th century to the present. This is a dispute between two groups of people about the rights to the territory of Palestine. nine0003

According to BBC Ukraine, in 1922 Great Britain took control of the territory of Palestine. In those lands at that time, the majority of the population were Arabs, and the Jews were in the minority. Tensions between the two nations began to rise when the international community challenged Britain to create a “national home” for the Jews in Palestine. That territory for the Jews was the home of their ancestors, but the Palestinian Arabs also claimed the land and opposed it.

During period 19From the 1920s to 1940s, the number of Jews arriving there grew as many fled persecution in Europe and sought a homeland after the Holocaust of World War II. Parallel to this, clashes between Jews and Arabs grew, as well as protests against British rule.

In 1947, the UN voted to divide Palestine into separate Jewish and Arab states, Jerusalem would become an international city.

The Jewish leaders accepted the plan, but the Arab side rejected it, so it was never implemented. nine0003

In 1967, Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank, most of the Syrian Golan Heights, the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian Sinai Peninsula.

Today, most Palestinian refugees and their descendants live in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, as well as in the neighboring countries of Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. Israel did not allow them or their descendants to return to their homes, claiming that this would overwhelm the country and threaten its existence as a Jewish state. nine0003

All these years, tensions between Israel and Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the West Bank have always been high.

Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank say they are suffering because of Israeli actions and restrictions. Israel says it is only acting to protect against Palestinian violence. The situation escalated greatly in mid-April 2021. There were clashes between the police and the Palestinians every night. For all the years of the conflict, there were a huge number of dead civilians on both sides. nine0003

On August 7, news spread that Israel had agreed to a truce with the Palestinians proposed by Egyptian mediators. The Palestinian group “Islamic Jihad” also confirmed the conclusion of peace with Israel in the Gaza Strip. On their part, a condition was put forward to release the leader Bassam al-Saadi, who was detained on suspicion of terrorism.

On the evening of August 31, the Palestinian media reported that, as part of an agreement with Israel, Islamic Jihad activist Khalil Al-Aoudeh would be released. Al-Auaudeh was detained by Israel in December 2021 and was under administrative arrest. The activist went on a prolonged hunger strike twice. nine0003

Political scientist on the conflict between Palestine and Israel

Zhumabek Sarabekov notes that not only Palestine and Israel, but the entire Middle East continues to be a “powder keg” in the international system. According to the political scientist, the interests of many players are concentrated in the region, including world and regional powers represented by the United States, China, Russia, Turkey, France and many others.

“In addition to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the situation in Syria has not yet been fully resolved in the region. The crisis in Libya is far from being resolved, and the conflict in Yemen is not over yet. In addition, there is a confrontation between Iran and Israel and the Arab monarchies,” Sarabekov notes. nine0003

The political scientist emphasized that the conflict between Palestine and Israel is unlikely to be resolved, as Tel Aviv relies on hard power, and the Palestinians do not see any real opportunities for themselves in diplomatic negotiations.

Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia

The multi-year Karabakh conflict is an ethno-political dispute in Transcaucasia between Azerbaijanis and Armenians over Nagorno-Karabakh. The conflict has been dragging on since 1987, and in 1991-1994, the confrontation led to large-scale military actions for control of Nagorno-Karabakh and some adjacent territories. nine0003

On May 5, 1994, the “Bishkek Protocol” was signed on a truce and a ceasefire between Armenia and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. However, in September 2020, the conflict again turned into a war phase, as a result of which Azerbaijan gained control of most of the previously lost territories, which were previously controlled by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic. In 2020, we also actively followed what was happening between the two states.

In early August of this year, hostilities resumed in Nagorno-Karabakh. On August 3, the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan announced the capture of several dominant heights in Karabakh during a special military operation called “Retribution”. Baku and Yerevan accuse each other of violating the ceasefire. nine0003

During the renewed hostilities, both sides lost soldiers. The European Union authorities called on the parties to the conflict to immediately cease hostilities and resume negotiations.

At the end of August, news appeared in the media that Russian peacekeepers had handed over control of the Lachin corridor to Azerbaijan, a six-kilometer mountain road that is of key importance for the entire region and connects Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. The city and the road itself from Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh were controlled by Russian peacekeepers – they have a five-year mandate with the possibility of extension. nine0003

Political scientist on the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh

Zhumabek Sarabekov notes that the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has received a completely new outcome over the past two years after the Azerbaijani army successfully carried out an offensive operation and managed to establish control over almost the entire region.

As a result of the 44-day war, a peace treaty was signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan through the mediation of Russia. However, as recent events show, the implementation of the document comes with great difficulties. Clashes are periodically resumed on the lines of demarcation. nine0003

“Each time Baku and Yerevan accuse each other of provocations. Nevertheless, in my opinion, there are still chances for the full implementation of the agreements,” says Sarabekov.

Taiwan and China

China and Taiwan have been in constant conflict for 70 years. The People’s Republic of China considers Taiwan to be a breakaway province that must return to China sooner or later. Taiwan has not yet officially declared itself an independent state, but the inhabitants consider themselves a separate people, and the island – a separate state. They have their own constitution, democratically elected leaders and their own army. nine0003

Over the years, relations between China and Taiwan have been easing, then deteriorating again. So, in 2018, they escalated even more after Beijing increased pressure on international companies, threatening them with a ban on doing business in China if they do not list Taiwan as part of China on their websites.

In 2016, Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party became the President of Taiwan. Four years later, she was re-elected to a second term, in what many saw as evidence that the people of Taiwan were even more chilled about the idea of reuniting with China. nine0003

The conflict escalated again after American Democrat politician Nancy Pelosi, a member of the US House of Representatives, visited Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan (Parliament) despite China’s threats against America.

Thus, on August 3, an American deputy met with the head of the Taiwanese administration, Tsai Ing-wen. According to Pelosi, the arrival of the US congressional delegation suggests that Washington will not refuse to support Taiwan. However, the White House argued that the deputy’s visit does not contradict the fact that America adheres to the “one China” principle. nine0003

As soon as Pelosi arrived in Taiwan, China’s state TV channels began to show footage of the Chinese army, air force and navy beginning to exercise around the island. The Chinese fighter jet repeatedly performed tactical maneuvers near the dividing line. Taiwanese fighter jets also patrolled the airspace on their side. However, aircraft from both sides did not cross the line.

Thus, China actively continued to conduct its military exercises on the border line with Taiwan. For example, Chinese state television reported on August 7 that drills on the “Taiwan” side of the median line, which in the past was accepted as the unofficial maritime border between Taiwan and China, would now be held regularly. nine0003

Taiwanese Prime Minister Su Zhengchang accused the Chinese authorities of violating stability in the region under the pretext of military exercises and urged them to moderate. The United States supported Taiwan in its criticism of China’s military exercises.

On August 5, information appeared on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China that China had imposed sanctions on the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and her immediate family.

In mid-August, a five-member US Congressional delegation arrived in Taiwan for an unannounced two-week visit. The goal is to discuss US-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, the global supply chain, and climate change. nine0003

Later, China imposed sanctions on seven political figures in Taiwan. From now on, all listed individuals, as well as their family members, are prohibited from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. By the end of August, warships of China’s large navy were increasingly crossing the median line of the Taiwan Strait between China and Taiwan as part of their military exercises. China has never officially recognized the middle line, which was organized by an American general in 1954 at the height of the Cold War between China and Taiwan. However, the People’s Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China respected the decision and did not cross the border. nine0003

On September 1, the Taiwanese military for the first time shot down a Chinese drone flying over one of the islands of the state.

Taiwan has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that Chinese drones have repeatedly flown near groups of Taiwanese islands off the coast of China, and also promised a counterattack against Chinese aircraft and ships that will intercept the state’s sea and air territory. Taiwan’s premier Su Tseng-chang said the Chinese government had left them no choice. He also stressed that China should exercise restraint. nine0003

Political scientist on the conflict between Taiwan and China

According to Zhumabek Sarabekov, the risk of Taiwan turning into a large-scale “hot spot” on the world map is increasing every month. Since Pelosi’s August visit to the island, tensions have only escalated.

Portugal in February: Travel Tips, Weather, and More

Weather

In Lisbon, you can expect daily highs of around the 60°F (15°C) mark and lows of 46°F (8°C)—still chilly enough for a sweater and coat. There’s an average of eight days of rain. Heading further north to Porto, highs hit averages of 51°F (11°C) and it’s wetter, with around 12 days of rain, so be sure to pack waterproofs and umbrellas.

The Algarve is a touch warmer, with an average of 55°F (13°C) and a maximum of 64°F (18°C). Days can be sunny and warm enough to get away with a T-shirt, but nights are still cool.

Crowds & Costs

February is one of the least crowded months to visit, with the chillier, more unpredictable climes and the likelihood of rain limiting the number of travelers. Major hotspots like Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve receive a mere fraction of the tourists. Low, off-season prices can be a great incentive to visit now, with rooms costing as little as 50% of what they would in the summer months. As a quick Internet search reveals, flights are much cheaper at this time of year, too.

The only flipside is that some of the resorts along the coast remain shut up for the season (reopening in spring), and the opening hours of sights and attractions in the cities are more limited (in smaller places, these are often only open from spring through fall).

Get Started

Where to Go

Temperatures usually hit double figures in February, but by all means come prepared for spontaneous downpours (pack layers, waterproofs, and an umbrella, just in case). The further south you go—the Algarve, say—the milder and generally drier it gets.

It’s a beautiful time to head out on a road trip into the backcountry, as in regions like the vine-laced Douro Valley and the rural Trás-os-Montes, stretching east of Porto, and the hilly, agricultural hinterland of the Algarve in the south, the landscape is one mass of pink and white blossom with thousands of almond trees in full bloom.

February is equally a chilled-out month to tick off some of the trophy sights in the cities, especially in honeypots like Lisbon and Porto.

What to do

Thanks to the relatively cool weather, February is a fine month for embracing activities that are either crowded or more strenuous during the hotter months. Big winter swells make for some of the best waves in the Algarve (in Sagres, for instance) and on the west coast (Peniche and Ericeira). And this is a great time to hike a leg of the 186-mile (300 km) Via Algarviana trail, linking riverside Alcoutim to the wild, windswept, lighthouse-dotted headland of Cabo de São Vicente, Europe’s westernmost point.

This is also an appealingly calm month to visit cities (with the added bonus of carnival bringing a dash of festival fun to a trip). You won’t have to contend with lines and madding crowds at the major museums and attractions in Lisbon and Porto, which get rammed in summer. And when the sun does come out, you’ll have the medieval alleyways of their historic centers pretty much to yourself.

February Events

Carnival Portugal gets its groove on for pre-Lenten carnival celebrations. Lisbon goes wild with street parties, processions, and balls. But more impressive and famous still are the three-day carnival shenanigans in Loulé in the Algarve, a true visual feast of parades featuring giant caricatures of celebrities and politicians, flamboyant costumes and hip-wiggling samba dancers in the Brazilian style. It’s a blast.

Fantasporto International Film Festival Fantasy, horror, and sci-fi movies hit big screens at Porto’s annual two-week film fest. The event kicks off in the third week in February and runs through to the first week in March. The main venue is the Art Deco Rivoli Theatre.

February 2022 global climate summary: 46th consecutive warmer-than-average February

According to NOAA’s monthly global climate summary for February 2022,

Globally, February 2022 was the seventh-warmest February in the 143-year NOAA record. The year-to-date (January-February) global surface temperature was the sixth highest on record. According to NCEI’s Global Annual Temperature Rankings Outlook, it is virtually certain (>99.0%) that 2022 will rank among the 10 warmest years on record.

(top) February 2022 temperatures compared to the 1981-2010 average, with warmer-than-average places colored red, and cooler-than-average places colored blue. Extreme temperature contrasts were visible across the Northern Hemisphere, with North America significantly cooler than average and Europe and much of Asia significantly warmer than average. (bottom) Bar graph of each February’s temperature compared to the 20th-century average between 1880 and 2022. Below-average Februaries are blue; above-average Februaries are red. The February warming trend over the full period of record is 0.81 degrees Celsius (1.46 degrees Fahrenheit) per century. NOAA Climate.gov, based on data from NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information.

The full February 2022 monthly report provides additional details:

The February 2022 global surface temperature was the seventh highest on record at 0.81°C (1.46°F) above the 20th century average. This value was 0.17°C (0.31°F) warmer than last year’s February value (2021), but 0.45°C (0.81°F) cooler than the record-warm February set in 2016. February 2022 also marked the 46th consecutive February and the 446th consecutive month with temperatures, at least nominally, above the 20th century average.

The month of February was characterized by cooler-than-average temperatures across North America, Greenland and its surrounding northern Atlantic Ocean, as well as parts of northern Africa, central and southern Asia, Australia, and the central/eastern tropical and southeastern Pacific Ocean. The most notable cold temperatures were observed across parts of Canada, where temperatures were at least 2.5°C (4.5°F) below average. However, no land or ocean areas had record-cold February temperatures.

Meanwhile, temperatures were much above average across Europe, western/northern Russia, the Atlantic, eastern Indian, and northern and western Pacific oceans, as well as parts of Central and South America and southern Africa. Record-warm February temperatures were observed across parts of the southeastern Atlantic Ocean, southwestern Pacific Ocean and across a small area in the southern Indian Ocean. According to the NSIDC, the Arctic, specifically the Eurasian coast and the central Arctic Ocean, had temperatures that were between 1°–8°C (2°–14°F) above average.

Percent difference from average (1979-2020) precipitation in February 2022. Places where precipitation was near normal (0 percent difference from average) are white. Places where precipitation was up to 100 percent below average (that is, no precipitation) are brown. Places where precipitation was up to 200 percent or more above average are blue-green. The signature of the continuing La Niña climate pattern appears in the tropical Pacific: below-average precipitation in the central and eastern part of the basin and above-average precipitation in the western tropical Pacific north of Australia. NOAA Climate.gov map, based on satellite data from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project.

When it comes to February precipitation, the report noted:

February precipitation was generally drier than normal across the western, central, and southeastern parts of the contiguous U.S., northeastern Brazil, northern Argentina, southern Chile, southern Europe, southern/eastern parts of Asia, and Australia. Wetter-than-normal conditions were notable across parts of the eastern contiguous, Alaska, northern Europe, western Russia, and eastern and southeastern Asia.

Many of the rainfall patterns in the tropics and mid-latitudes are typical of those that occur during La Niña, the cool phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation climate pattern. Although the phenomenon is anchored in the tropical Pacific, it has long-distance influences on the atmospheric circulation that change where and how much it rains in the subtropics and mid-latitudes. The report described several of these:

Outside the tropical Pacific the La Niña effect is also evident in some other locations, including the dry (negative anomalies) zone extending northeastward from the western Pacific, across Hawaii and into the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. This typical La Niña feature has helped to extend in time and increase the intensity of the long-term drought in the southwest U.S. On the wet side, the La Niña-related positive anomaly features over the Maritime Continent and northern South America were associated with rainy season floods and landslides in Malaysia and Indonesia and also in Ecuador, Colombia and Brazil.

Surface air temperature for February 2020

Temperatures in February 2020 were above the 1981-2010 average over almost all of Europe. They were extremely high for the time of year in the east, in a region extending southward from southern Finland to northern Ukraine and eastward over Russia. For the second month running, the average temperature reported for Helsinki was more than 5ºC higher than the 1981-2010 average for the month. Continuing mild temperatures over Germany led for the first time to the complete failure of the country’s harvest of ice wine, as the low temperatures needed did not occur this winter.

Rather unusually for recent years, but as in January 2020, temperatures were below normal over the Svalbard archipelago, where sea-ice extent  was close to its 1981-2010 average. Unusually warm temperatures east of the southern half of Greenland coincide with below-average sea-ice cover there.

Considerably above-average temperatures were not confined to Europe, but extended over most of Russia. Temperatures were also much above average over West Antarctica. Other regions that were quite substantially warmer than average include north-western Africa, Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asia, and much of China, with smaller pockets in North and South America, central and southern Africa and Western Australia.

Temperatures were much below average over the easternmost part of Russia, Alaska, northern Canada and Greenland. It was also colder than average, but to a lesser degree, over several other quite extensive areas of land. Among them is south-eastern Australia, where conditions were in contrast to those experienced earlier in the region’s summer.

Although regions of below-average temperature occurred over all major oceans, particularly in the southern hemisphere, air temperatures over sea were predominantly higher than the 1981-2010 average.

Global temperatures were substantially above average in February 2020. The month was:

  • 0.8°C warmer than the average February from 1981-2010, making it the second warmest February in this data record;

  • cooler by a little under 0.1°C than February 2016, the warmest February;

  • 0.1°C warmer than February 2017, which is now the third warmest February;

  • exceeded in anomalous warmth only by February and March 2016.

European-average temperature anomalies are generally larger and more variable than global anomalies, especially in winter, when they can change by several degrees from one month to the next. The European-average temperature for February 2020 was particularly high. The month was:

  • 3.9°C warmer than the average February in the period 1981-2010;

  • the second warmest February in this data record, after February 1990, which was 4. 5°C warmer than the 1981-2010 average;

  • •0.1°C warmer than February 2016, which is now the third warmest February.

Boreal winter – December 2019 to February 2020

The regions with highly anomalous temperatures tended to persist throughout the period from December to February, such that the map of temperature anomalies for the boreal winter of 2019/20 is quite similar in pattern to that already shown and discussed for February 2020. Exceptions include the USA, which is generally warmer in the winter average than in the average for February alone, and south-eastern Australia, as discussed earlier.

The persistence of above-average temperatures over Europe resulted in a December-February average temperature for the continent that was 3. 4ºC above the 1981-2010 norm. This makes 2019/20 by far the warmest European winter in this and longer data records. The 2019/20 temperature exceeded that of the previous warmest winter, 2015/16, by almost 1.4ºC.

Temperatures averaged over the twelve-month period from March 2019 to February 2020 were:

  • well above the 1981-2010 average over and near Alaska, over the far northeast of Canada, and over central parts of northern Siberia and the Arctic Ocean to the north;

  • above average throughout Europe, more so in the east;

  • much above average over southern Africa, Australia and some parts of the Antarctic;

  • above average over most other areas of land and ocean;

  • below average over a few land and oceanic areas, most notably over a central part of North America.

Averaging over twelve-month periods smooths out shorter-term variations in regional- and global-average temperatures. Globally, the twelve-month period from March 2019 to February 2020 was 0.64°C warmer than the 1981-2010 average. The warmest twelve-month period was from October 2015 to September 2016, with a temperature 0.66°C above average. 2016 is the warmest calendar year on record, with a global temperature 0.63°C above that for 1981-2010. 2019 is the second warmest calendar year in this data record, with a temperature 0.59°C above average.

0.63°C should be added to these values to relate recent global temperatures to the pre-industrial level defined in the IPCC Special Report on “Global Warming of 1. 5°C”. The average temperature for the twelve months to February 2020 is close to 1.3°C above the level. The average for February 2020 alone is more than 1.4°C above the level. The only month whose average temperature reached more than 1.5°C above the level is February 2016.

The spread in the global averages from various temperature datasets has been relatively large over the past three years. During this period the twelve-month-average temperatures, relative to 1981-2010, presented here are higher than those from five other datasets, by between 0.03°C and 0.14°C, with median 0.06°C, for the year 2019. This is due partly to differences in the extent to which datasets represent the relatively warm conditions that have predominated over the Arctic and the seas around Antarctica. Differences in estimates both of sea-surface temperature elsewhere and of temperatures over land outside the Arctic have been further factors. There is nevertheless general agreement between the datasets regarding:

  • the exceptional warmth of 2016, and the warmth also of 2015, 2017, 2018 and especially 2019;

  • the general increase in global temperature at an average rate close to 0. 2°C per decade since the late 1970s;

  • the sustained period of above-average temperatures from 2002 onwards.

There is more variability in average European temperatures, but values are less uncertain because observational coverage of the continent is relatively dense. Twelve-month averages for Europe were at a high level from 2014 to 2016. They then fell, but remained 0.5°C or more above the 1981-2010 average. Twelve-month averages have subsequently risen again. The latest average, to February 2020, is 1.6°C above the 1981-2010 norm, making the last twelve months the warmest such period on record, with a temperature 0.1°C higher than the next warmest period, which was the overlapping twelve-month period ending in January 2020. 2019 was the warmest calendar year on record for Europe as a whole, by a narrow margin.

The average surface air temperature analysis homepage explains more about the production and reliability of the values presented here.

According to meteorologists, in February the sun starts to warm up

Share

February in the Samara region may turn out to be warmer than January. However, surprises are not ruled out. The forecast was provided by the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.

The average air temperature in February is expected to be from -7.5 to -9.9 degrees. This is 1-1.4 degrees higher than the average long-term values. And this weather is unusual for the region.

– Usually February is a cold month, with blizzards and snowstorms. The negative radiation balance, combined with atmospheric circulation, leads to the persistence of severe frosts. Most often, cold weather is observed in the first half of the month. In the second half of February, due to an increase in the influx of solar radiation, the likelihood of severe frosts decreases. However, long-term data suggest that there are fewer days with a thaw, as well as with precipitation, during this period than in January. According to long-term observational data, the average monthly air temperature in February ranges from -8 to -16 degrees. Absolute temperature minima were recorded at 1929, 1930, 1951, 1954, 1956, 1967, 1976, 1994, 2006, 2011. Then the temperature dropped to 38-46 degrees below zero, – said in the Volga UGMS.

At the same time, monthly precipitation is expected to be within the normal range of 17–45 mm. Forecasters on average count 3-9 days of snowstorms, in some years – up to 10-12 days. But the sun on cloudless days begins to warm imperceptibly, and along with the light comes warmth. Also in February, the south wind mainly blows.

Let’s see how February 2022 will be remembered. As for January, this month was marked by heavy snowfalls. We even had to close the roads. Also during snowstorms, there were several accidents, including fatal ones. The last one took place on January 31st.

      beware, it’s going to g

You are tired, a little numb, and you caught a slight cold.

It’s normal, it’s February. The doctor has prescribed you some vitamins: “two pills in the morning before drinking your coffee, it will boost your immune system“.

You take them, these little capsules, to give you a little energy at the end of winter. It has been tough: between work, family and shortened days, you haven’t really had time for yourself.

You are probably longing for summer, and honestly, me as well… The feeling of warm sand under your fingers, the smell of sun-drenched plants, the crystalline sound of a river, all these little pleasures of a summer adventure that is still far away.

Fortunately, tonight, on TV, there is Indiana Jones. You’ll be able to share his desert and jungle escapades, just to get a whiff of the exotic.

Except that, miracle! While you are quietly sitting on your sofa, Indiana leaps out of the screen and grabs you to take you with him to the other side of the TV.

And wham! Here you are immersed in sunny settings, where the heat deliciously tingles your skin, where adventure takes you to authentic encounters and picturesque landscapes.

No, it’s not a dream: or at least, it soon won’t be.

Thanks to my small selection of the best destinations where to go in February for the sun, you’ll be able to treat yourself with such a solo getaway.

After all, in real life, why couldn’t Indiana Jones be a woman? Yes, today’s globetrotter is you!

It’s up to you to go on expeditions under the sun, to you to discover new places, and the world!

All you have to do is choose what you prefer: a more accessible escape to get you in the swing of things, or a more daring odyssey to jump straight into the unknown?

      1. First choice of destinations where to go in February for the sun: from Morocco to the DROMadories

You have never been away alone before?

You can use our 10 tips to organise your first solo trip and get your plane ticket for the four destinations I’m going to introduce you to right away.

This way you can make sure you travel without too many stopovers to reassure yourself in your project.

If, on the other hand, you already live in these regions… Why not welcome a solo female traveller into your home and introduce her to your exceptional environment?

You will become its ambassador so you can share the values that are dear to you and ensure more responsible tourism in your beautiful region.

      • Morocco

Morocco is an excellent destination for you to go in February for sun.

Marrakech, for example, enjoys an average temperature of 20 degrees in winter, ensuring you a pleasant stay where your comforter will be moaning about your absence.

Situated in the heart of this vast country, it is nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains and benefits from a rare cultural halo: a former imperial city, its heritage is more than remarkable.

There is no lack of activities in this economic artery, but the best thing is to let yourself be guided by a local who will share his daily life with you.

Find an authentic female host in Marrakech.

Meknes is another city to discover in Morocco according to Patricia, a traveller who travelled the country for 6 months before choosing to settle in this authentic town.

Ranked in the top 10 cities to visit in 2019 by the very famous Lonely Planet guide, it seems clear that it is a must in the country. I haven’t even told you yet that it is protected by UNESCO… In case you still doubt its potential.

It’s a good thing: Patricia is a hostess who will be ready to welcome you according to her availability.

Find an authentic female host in Meknes.

Finally, why not make a stopover in the Sahara?

Yes, rather than suffocating in the middle of summer, discovering the sand dunes in February will allow you to fully breathe in the mildness of its temperatures (which still go up to 30 degrees…)

I haven’t yet had the chance to see these landscapes with my own eyes: but I dream of climbing the dunes at dawn to admire the ochre sand bathed by the light of the rising sun.

It’s much better than a few vitamin pills, isn’t it?

      • Tahiti

I’ve already talked about it as a flagship destination where to go to France in February, and for good reason: with a minimum of 25 degrees, this Polynesian island has something to make you dream.

Diving is an activity not to be missed: the conditions are favourable and above all, the few tourists will allow you an exclusive tête à tête with its seascapes. With sea water at 28 degrees, it is not so difficult to be tempted by a sea excursion.

Rather white beach or black beach? Of volcanic origins, Tahiti has a thousand colours. Authentic villages, caves, waterfalls, it is a real little paradise. Moreover, if you are more into hiking than lazing around, there are some very beautiful paths to explore.

Natural toboggans where the waterfalls have polished the rocks, unique flora and fauna, surfing spots where you can find the thickest waves in the world, the list of opportunities in Tahiti is still long: they are all accessible even if you are solo and promise a change of scenery for a French territory.

We are not very far from the sun-drenched nature and the river noises we were talking about above… A huge playground that you can definitely discover on your own.

Jessica  is an adventurous traveller who enjoyed a solo trip to Polynesia and I can assure you that her travel stories make you want to take the first plane to meet this exceptional region.

      • French Guiana

It is often said that French Guiana is ideal in the dry season: but did you know that February is a month of “little rainy season” where showers follow the good weather in the evening?

It is therefore a mild period when the plants are swollen and the landscape green: it must be said that its territory is almost entirely covered by the Amazonian forest.

Between mangroves and nature reserves, islands and beaches, rare and preserved ecosystems, French Guiana offers a whole range of sites, each more exceptional than the last.

Frankly, there is enough to feel the soul of an adventurer!

A rich and varied region, its fauna and flora are therefore to be discovered. Moreover, February is a month of celebration: it signs the Guyana carnival, which lasts nearly 2 months…

Indeed, this festival brings together different communities (metropolitan, Brazilian and Chinese) according to an old tradition.

A colourful and cheerful show that brings everyone together for weeks of fun and entertainment.

French Guiana is ultimately a wild and festive region, for a unique stay on the other side of the world while staying in France. An exotic and yet nearby land: the perfect mix for all those who dream of an accessible getaway.

What if you were to determine your adventurer profile to find out if this destination is right for you?

Find an authentic female host in Kourou.

      2. Second choice of destinations: between Ivory, Nordeste and Malabar

These three names don’t mean much to you, do they? Come on, a little hint: I’m talking about 3 different geographical coasts.

If you’re already used to travelling alone, or if you feel like challenging yourself after being convinced by the 7 good reasons to go on a solo holiday, then you may prefer this second choice of destinations where to go in February for sun.

I strongly recommend, however, that you sleep in a private home to ensure a safer and more immersive environment.

Adventure is all well and good, but it is better to benefit from a safe place to fully enjoy the experience.

Come on, without further suspense, here are the 3 countries to which the different coasts correspond:

      • The Ivory Coast

February is the ideal month to discover this West African country. With temperatures peaking at 30 degrees, a dry season that is in full swing and offers optimal swimming… Between seaside resorts and tropical forests, arid savannahs and lake-fringed reliefs, there is no shortage of choices.

If you want to get away from it all and head off into the unknown, you’ve come to the right place. Why not start with a tour of the capital, Abidjan, a city teeming with activities and cultural diversity.

Find an authentic female host in Abidjan.

Grand Bassam is another town worth a visit: a former capital, it is now nestled between past and future in a timeless architectural setting.

If you prefer natural landscapes, then head for Man: “the city of 18 mountains” is indeed surrounded by a chain of reliefs that you can hike through its lush forest.

Part of it is even nicknamed “the sacred forest of monkeys”. Proof that the fauna and flora of the Ivory Coast abounds in life and colour.

      • Brazil

Brazil is a huge country: the fifth largest in the world. Covered in part by the Amazon rainforest and overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, whether you are interested in hiking, exploring or just lazing around, there is something for everyone.

Since the seasons are reversed, in February, Brazil lives the heart of its summer. An ideal period for the north and centre of the country. If you decide to go to Rio, for example, then bingo: the sea is very warm and you can also enjoy the carnival period…

Indeed, Rio’s carnival is certainly the most famous in the world, and for good reason: it exudes a real fairy-tale atmosphere when, at nightfall, the floats go around illuminated with a thousand colours in the local songs and music.

Samba schools compete for the best choreographies they have prepared throughout the year. This is a real show not to be missed if you are planning a holiday in Brazil.

But of course, it would be simplistic to limit this country to its carnival alone: the North, for example, is an often neglected region, although it is endowed with spectacular landscapes.

And what could be better than to set off to meet this colourful and festive country thanks to a host who will know how to share her love of her country with you?

Find an authentic female host in Fortim.

      • India

Unlike the Ivory Coast and Brazil, February in India is the local winter… Yes, but a winter at 32 degrees.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had worse!

February is the perfect time to treat yourself with a trip to India.

So yes, I’ll grant you: the sea is only 25 degrees… (I hear Tahiti giggling, Brittany a little less). Nevertheless, there is on average only one rainy day in the whole month.

Yes, yes, only one rainy day out of the 28 days of February.  Is it me or is there going to be a massive exodus from Brittany as a result of this article? Well, it is perhaps not for nothing that Véronique, a Breton woman, settled in Gurugram…

Find an authentic female host in Gurugram.

In short, you will have understood it: Indian February is ultimately the best plan if you want to go on a trip at that time.

As for what you can do there…

Visit the Taj Mahal and see one of the 7 wonders of the world, discover the fascinating soul of Delhi and lose yourself in the old quarter, admire Jaipur and its pink and oriental facades, explore the atypical Pondicherry where French and Indian architecture mix in a remarkable way…

But wait, I haven’t yet told you about Varanasi, the sacred heart of Hinduism where the Ganges meanders.

Do you like tea? You can also take a trip up to the Darjeeling resort, whose valleys are covered with the famous tea. You will even have a breathtaking view of the Himalayan range.

Well, I think you will have understood: I dream of going to India and it is difficult for me to talk about it objectively. On the other hand, I am lucid and I know that it is a destination where a woman alone must remain attentive.

But what’s that noise… Ah, I think it’s the ending credits of Indiana Jones starting.

His adventures are over and you are ready to turn off the TV. Time flies when you start dreaming: it’s already late, the night has settled down and an icy wind is blowing in the street.

Yes, winter is still here and seems to take pleasure in reminding you that the next warm days are still months away.

Tomorrow, you’ll have to think about taking your vitamins to get through the end of this cold season… Or looking at plane tickets to choose your next adventure in the sun.

I don’t know which country would have chosen our good old Indiana, but it doesn’t matter: what will YOU choose?

Florida in February: Everything You Need to Know

Thinking about spending some time in Florida in February? We’ve got you covered with this comprehensive guide.

February in Florida is a beautiful weather month for the state, making any type of vacation enjoyable for the whole family. Whether you’re here for Spring Training, Walt Disney World or to experience one of the many beautiful beaches, there is plenty of fun to be had this month with excellent conditions for your travels.

Some of the best things you can experience only in February include swimming with manatees in Crystal River, attending the Florida State Fair in Tampa and seeing the Ocala Winter Circuit in the Horse Capital of the World. In addition to these unique experiences, adventurers will thrill in the Everglades cooler weather and the sailfishing in the Keys.

From weather to beaches, attractions, and things to do, this guide will tell you everything you need to know about visiting Florida in February.

This article is part of Roundtript’s series of expert Florida travel guides for every month of the year.

For a summary of each Florida month & season all in one place, check out our big guide to the Best Times of the Year to Visit Florida.

      February Weather in Florida

      Aerial shot of Miami Beach.

February in Florida can vary widely from year to year, depending on how cold the early Winter was. Some years, the Winter is warm for Christmas, then cold blasts in from February through March. While Florida is bound to fluctuate in late Winter, expect to pack light layers you can put on and strip off when necessary.

Florida is the only place in the United States that maintains a subtropical to tropical climate all year round. Based on where you’ll be traveling, temperatures are likely to vary.

In the northern part of the state (Central Florida to the Panhandle) average daily highs in February will be around 68°F (20°C) and lows will be about 45°F (7.2°C). In the southern part (Central Florida to the Keys) average highs in February will be closer to 74°F (23.3°C).

February is in the dry season in Florida, and snow is extremely rare even in the Northern areas. Rain is also scarce. Humidity levels will remain higher than the rest of the country, but February tends to have drier air. One of the main cautions for February is the fogginess of the morning hours. Very often the cold air collides with humidity at this time, creating fog on the roadways for a few hours every morning until about 10am.

February Affordability & Crowds in Florida

Travelers at airport in Fort Meyers, FL. EQRoy/Shutterstock

February crowds in Florida will vary depending on which region you visit this month. However, February tends to be a slower month for vacationing. Most parts of Florida will experience a lull, even on the beaches, as most families will not be traveling this month in general.

The places where you’ll experience the biggest influx of visitors will be in towns that are popular with “snowbirds” (Northern residents who stay in Florida for the Winter and Spring). The snowbirds usually arrive in October and stay through May. You’ll generally want to avoid traveling to places like St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Naples, Fort Myers and Hollywood, FL, as these will see some of the largest amounts of winter visitors.

Most travelers will enjoy lower than average rates for Florida hotels in February. Decent accommodations in Orlando will range from $200 – $350 per night, hotels in Tampa will range from $250 – $350 per night, and the more populous city of Miami will see rates from $300 – $500 per night.

Best Things to Do in Florida in February

      Experience Miami & Fort Lauderdale

American Airline Arena, home of the NBA’s Miami Heat. Tiago Pestana/Shutterstock

Miami and Fort Lauderdale are two cities in the state that are very much their own experiences, but so close in proximity it’d be a shame not to experience them together. While Fort Lauderdale tends to be more widely known as a place to live, and Miami being the place to visit, there are loads of things to excite you in both environments.

Miami, of course, is well-known for it’s white, sandy beaches and exquisite nightlife. We highly recommend booking a hotel on Miami Beach to get access not only to on-the-water vacationing, but to also be near the sights and sounds of downtown Miami. There are so many events going on in February, from NBA games to Art Fests and everything in between. We recommend taking a boat or helicopter tour of the city, exploring Little Havana and seeing the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

In the same trip, you can easily get to Fort Lauderdale via car in about half and hour. Fort Lauderdale offers a big city atmosphere with a more exclusive vibe, featuring upscale dining, entertainment and excursions. There are many day cruises perfect for a family outing while taking in the scenery, and there are fishing and sportfish charters you can take into the Atlantic. Don’t miss Las Olas Boulevard for when you need some high class dining and shopping to rival Miami.

      Visit Ocala

Silver Spring State Park in Ocala. Sorin Popa/Shutterstock

Ocala is a lowkey destination in the Northern Central part of Florida, known for it’s abundance of horse farms, expert equestrian trainers and race tracks. It’s renowned as the Horse Capital of the World. The main attraction in February is the Ocala Winter Circuit, a competition that lasts from mid-December to March. Every weeks hosts a different equestrian competition with prizes ranging from $50k to $1mil.

Many of the over 1,200 horse farms located in Ocala will offer tours and horseback rides for families and groups. They also offer feeding activities and carriage rides for special occasions. But horse farms aren’t the only entertainment around this vast area; Ocala is also home to some of the most beautiful natural habitats in inland Florida.

Tourists will revel in the landscapes of both Silver Springs State Park and Ocala National Forest, featuring natural springs, waterways and tree-lined wetlands. Glass-bottomed boats can be rented to get the full experience of the crystal clear springs. Ocala also has Juniper Springs, Rainbow Springs State Park and KP Hole Park, giving your party many options to choose from. And if fine dining or shopping is on your vacation bucket list, Ocala Downtown Historic Square has plenty to offer.

      Swim in Crystal River

      Manatees in Florida’s Crystal River.

Where else can you swim with real Florida manatees? These gentle creatures can be found in the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean and the Amazon, but Crystal River is the only place where you can legally swim with them. They are lovingly referred to as “sea cows” for their peaceful demeanor and slow-paced, vegetarian lifestyle.

Crystal River, located on Florida’s Nature Coast, is the Winter destination for manatees seeking warmer waters than the ocean. The river maintains an even 72°F (23.3°C) all year long, making it a comfortable environment for both manatees and people in the Winter months. Residents recommend staying at the Plantation on Crystal River, for the nicest amenities, beautiful white plantation accommodations and old-school Southern charm.

While there are plenty of water adventures like kayaking and fishing, and dry land biking and exploring, no experience beats swimming with the manatees in Kings Bay. There are several outfitters that will take you on guided tours of the springs where these manatees refuge in February. They’ll rent equipment and take you right into the water for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

      Tour Everglades National Park

February is a great time to see Everglades National Park since there are fewer visitors this time of year and the weather is favorable for outdoor exploring in these typically hot wetlands. This national park makes up 1.5 million acres in Florida’s southwest corner on the opposite side of Miami, filled with mangroves and hundreds of wildlife species.

It’s touted as the United States’ Largest Subtropical Wilderness and guests can experience the habitat in many different ways. Guides host daily tours via tram, rented bicycles, and airboats. You even have the opportunity to take a fishing tour, eco tour or go kayaking and camping in the Everglades.

Kids will love the Everglades “Every Kid Outdoors” program. This special pass is applicable to multiple national parks around the U. S. and allows kids to experience the fullness of national parks while learning with expert guides along the way. In the Everglades, children and parents will get to see everything from alligators and manatees to birds and turtles.

      Diving in the Keys

The Winter months are a great time to dive in the Florida Keys with great visibility and fair temperatures in and out of the water. Outfitters dot the Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West, giving you plenty of options for a guided dive and rental equipment. Because the water temps are cooler, a wet suit is highly recommended for your trip.

The top dive sites you’ll find in the Keys are reefs filled with aquatic animals from sea turtles to sharks. Looe Key off of Big Pine Key is a great jumping off point for reef diving, along with Molasses Reef in Key Largo. You can also dive wrecks like the USS Spiegel Grove off Key Largo and the USNS Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the preferred diving spot in Key West. There’s even a sunken “Christ of the Abyss” you can find in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the most sought-after diving experience in the Keys.

If you’re into spear fishing, the Keys is one of the world’s best locations for the sport. In February, you’ll be searching for some of the Keys finest catches, including Hogfish, Lionfish and Grouper. If you prefer fishing above the water, February is a great month to take a charter offshore in search of Sailfish. Sportfishing is huge here and February through March is the finest time for landing these beastly fish.

      Visit Mount Dora

Mount Dora is a small town in Central Florida, about 45 minutes north of Orlando. The town is a popular antique shop destination for Florida residents and makes a great stay for a quiet vacation away from the hustle and bustle of city life. In February, the crowds will be minimal and lodging rates will be fairly low.

The main event happening this month will be the Annual Mount Dora Arts Festival, held on the lakeshore. Locally recognized artists and a few renowned creators from across the country will make an appearance at the festival over the course of three days. Guests will have the opportunity to view hundreds of different works with many available for purchase.

Downtown Mount Dora is dotted with antique shops, restaurants and hometown goods. Those visiting will enjoy the quiet comforts of walking the main drag, upscale dining at a local cafe or touring one of many historical buildings. The residents and business owners are extremely friendly and welcoming to all guests who enter their doors.

      Best Florida Beaches in February

Florida has a multitude of great beaches to visit all year. Below we’ve listed the best beaches in each area and what the experience will be like in the month of February.

      Gold Coast: Best All-Around

Ocean Drive on South Beach, Miami.

The Gold Coast is located in the southwest side of Florida, mainly encompassing the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area on the Atlantic side. Miami has the highest temperatures in Florida all year round, making it the top destination for February visitors who are looking to avoid the cold. The beaches in this area are very popular with tourists, so expect them to be fairly crowded, with water temps at 71°F (21.6°C).

Our top recommendations for Gold Coast beaches include Las Olas Beach in Fort Lauderdale, Miami Beach and South Beach. The best part about visiting this area is cruising down Ocean Drive, choosing from a wide variety of dining and hotel options and enjoying the night life in the city.

      Treasure Coast: Best Weather

Palm Beach, Florida, USA clock tower on Worth Ave.

The Treasure Coast is located just above Miami’s beaches and has some of the warmer temperatures – about 74°F (23.3°C) – you can experience in Florida in February. West Palm and Palm Beach are popular beach towns in this area known for glamorous residences on pristine white sands. There are many things to do in this area, making it a nice place to vacation.

Our top beach recommendations in this area are West Palm, Delray, Pompano, Palm Beach, and Boca Raton. All feature slightly different styles. Delray Beach not only has excellent beaches, but has a booming arts district. Pompano Beach has multiple diving sights to explore coral reefs and shipwrecks. Boca Raton is great for recreational activities like golf and shopping.

      The Florida Keys: Warm Getaway

Smathers Beach in Key West, Florida.

The Keys are an extremely popular destination all year round, and February is no exception. February offers a winter reprieve for snowbirds and tourists alike, so the Keys will also be packed with visitors this time of year. The water averages 71°F (21.6°C). Our favorite spots include beaches on Key West, Key Largo and Marathon, as well as Bahia Honda State Park and the Dry Tortugas National Park.

Some fun and unique things to do in this area include exploring historical places like the Hemingway House, the old civil war base at Fort Zachary Taylor and getting a picture at the Southernmost Point. We highly recommend flying in for those looking to do an extended weekend in the Keys, but driving from Miami will give you some of the most scenic ocean views you’ve ever witnessed.

      Paradise Coast

      Board walk on Marco Island.

The Paradise Coast is opposite of the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area, featuring a more natural habitat and relaxing environment for winter visitors and older audiences. The area tends to be an idyllic setting for snowbirds, with lots of events and activities within a serene atmosphere. It’s also one of the closest beach spots to the Everglades.

The vacation areas will be fairly busy this time of year, with cool and clear waters averaging 69°F (20.4°C). The top destinations on this coast are Marco Island, Naples, and Fort Myers. Marco Island is great for fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding, making it a fun beach trip for families and active seniors. While Naples and Fort Myers generally draw an older crowd for a more refined experience.

      Cultural Coast

Aerial view of Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island.

We are most partial to the Cultural Coast as it’s been the favorite summer destination for our families since before we were born. In February, the water and weather will be slightly cooler than you’d expect for the Gulf Coast. The beaches are beautiful here, but the water will average 64°F (17.3°C).

Our best suggestions for visiting the Cultural Coast are Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key, Siesta Key and Sanibel Island. Anna Maria Island is the perfect beach town with a very relaxed atmosphere that encourages walking and biking around the island. Longboat Key on the other hand puts on more of the ritz. Siesta Key has recreational accommodations for the whole family and Sanibel has a great natural habitat in the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Preserve.

      Space Coast

The Space Coast is located slightly north of Orlando on the Atlantic side of the state. Known as the home of Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral and the famous Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, this area has been a popular Spring Break destination for decades. While the beaches don’t rock as much as they did in the early 2000’s, tourists still enjoy what the Space Coast has to offer.

February will be cooler on the Space Coast, with the water temperatures averaging 65°F (18.3°C) which is cold to Floridians, but vacationers may not mind. The best beaches on the Space Coast are Melbourne, Cocoa Beach and Daytona Beach. All have a very similar structure and atmosphere, so choosing your location may be based on their proximity to Orlando – in which case Cocoa will be your closest option.

      Sun Coast

The Sun Coast is north of the Cultural Coast on the Gulf side of the state, with similar weather and water temps at 61°F (16.1°C) in February. The Sun Coast boasts Tampa Bay’s best beaches, including Dunedin, Clearwater and St. Pete Beach. While these beaches are heavily marketed and popular with tourists, the coasts mentioned above will have more pristine offerings and lodging.

Our best recommendations for this area are to visit Caladesi Island State Park or Honeymoon Island State Park. Both require ferry trips from the mainland in Dunedin. These well-preserved state parks have designated dog-friendly areas, picnic tables and walking paths to take in the natural island habitats. You’re also guaranteed to see gopher tortoises, sea turtles and ocean birds with every visit to these islands.

      First Coast

The First Coast is Florida’s coldest coast on the Atlantic side, featuring the historical cities and beaches of St. Augustine, Jacksonville and Sea Islands. The water temperatures in the month of February will be about 62°F (16.6°C). Visitors to this area will love the historical aspects of the region even more so than the beaches themselves this time of year.

St. Augustine is known as Florida’s oldest city and has many landmarks to explore, including the Castillo de San Marcos fort. Jacksonville is Florida’s most populous city with many parks, gardens and museums to experience. Amelia Island is the perfect escape for a luxury resort stay with upscale golf courses and shopping districts.

      Emerald Coast

The Emerald Coast makes up Florida’s panhandle from Pensacola to Tallahassee. This coast will experience the coldest temperatures in Florida during the Winter, so expect February water temperatures to follow suit 61°F (16. 1°C). Despite the cooler weather, the Emerald Coast has a lot to offer in the month of February.

Our top beach recommendations in this area are Pensacola, South Walton Island, Destin and Panama City. Swimming may not be your top option this month, but beach walks and inland activities will make a great vacation. Pensacola has many museums to visit, while Panama City has several state parks to experience. South Walton has a great art scene and Destin has excellent golf courses and other recreational activities.

      Top Florida Attractions in February

      Walt Disney World

Stormtroopers interacting with guests inside Disney World’s Star War’s Galaxy’s Edge.

Walt Disney World is the vacation capitol of the world, therefore it’s Florida’s biggest attraction. Walt Disney World is comprised of four different theme parks (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) and two water parks (Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon). Disney is located outside of Orlando in Lake Buena Vista. In the month of February, the weather will be cool but dry and the parks will not be very crowded.

Epcot International Art Festival is going on during the entire month of February, with special events and merchandise featured inside the park. Resort rates will be lower this month, along with ticket pricing and even food pricing (which fluctuates with tourist volumes). February is also when the Princess Half Marathon takes place in the Magic Kingdom.

There is so much to do at Disney World, as you can see on this big list of 110 Disney World Must Do’s.

      Universal Orlando

There is plenty for people of all ages to enjoy inside this ocean-themed park. In February, the weather is cool and dry and the park will have fewer visitors. Most people expect to get wet at Sea World, but it’s actually not common unless you sit up front for the whale shows, so no worries about getting wet in the colder weather.

      Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens is the biggest theme park in the Tampa Bay area, located in north Tampa. It’s a great option for a full day to add into your weeklong vacation in Tampa, St. Petersburg or Clearwater, about 15 miles from the Tampa International Airport. In February, the Food & Wine Festival is going on, featuring live concerts with food and drink specials around the park.

      Legoland

Legoland is one of Florida’s newest theme parks, located in Winter Haven, right in the middle of Central Florida. A quick drive from Orlando, Legoland is entirely themed after these popular little toy blocks which have inspired movies, roller coasters and water rides. There’s event a Lego resort where you can stay with the whole family. February is a great time to visit Legoland with dry, cool weather and fewer visitors.

      Gatorland

Gatorland is a lesser known amusement park when compared to the likes of Walt Disney World and Universal, but a popular attraction nonetheless. Visitors love to learn more about Florida’s swamp creatures and natural habitat in this fun experience. Gatorland is south of Orlando and offers ziplining fun, off-road adventures and petting areas. February will be a slower month for the park, with cool and dry weather for your trip.

      February Events in Florida

Florida hosts thousands of events each year appealing to a variety of audiences. We’ve listed the best events in February that most everyone would enjoy that take place over the course of several days or long weekends.

      Baseball Spring Training Games

Many Northeastern baseball teams come to Florida for Spring Training since it’s the only state not snowing on the field this month. They call it the “Grapefruit League” and each team makes it’s “home away from home” in different cities throughout the Sunshine State. You’ll find the New York Yankees in Tampa, the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers and the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, to name a few. Check the schedule to see if teams are playing in your vacation destination this February.

      Florida State Fair

The Florida State Fair is held annually in Tampa at the Florida State Fairgrounds. This 12 day event features carnival rides and games, free entertainment and loads of fair food for guests to enjoy. There are many shopping kiosks throughout the fair, as well as cultural exhibits and even agriculture exhibits with over 5,000 animals on display.

      Florida Strawberry Festival

The Florida Strawberry Festival kicks off prime strawberry season in the month of February through March. Plant City in Central Florida is home to some of the best strawberry farms in the state and hosts this festival annually for everyone to enjoy. The festival has rides, games and vendors scattered around the grounds, along with live concerts with national headliners and strawberry shortcake stands.

      Valentine’s Day

Depending on your destination, there may be tons of different Valentine’s Day options for you to choose from. Restaurants all over the state will likely be booked far in advance, so it’s best to plan ahead if you want to dine somewhere specific on this special day. In addition to eating, there are other activities offered in many parts of Florida for you to have fun with your love.

      Conclusion

February is a beautiful month in Florida, but underrated by many who typically wouldn’t travel this month. If you’re looking for some of Florida’s best weather for experiencing it’s vast number of recreational activities, look no further than the perfect month of February.

A vacation to Florida in February is most ideal for lovers seeking a Valentine’s destination, baseball fans who want to see Spring Training games and outdoor enthusiasts who come to experience diving in the Keys, exploring the Everglades and even swimming with manatees in Crystal River.

Where to go for a seaside vacation in February

February is far from being the most popular month for holidays in warm countries. New Year holidays and vacations are over, and summer is still far away.

But this particular month is considered the most successful for those who do not like the big crowd of people at the resorts. In addition, the flow of tourists is becoming significantly less, which means that prices for tourism services, infrastructure and services will decrease compared to the previous month. Therefore, February is a great way to save money and also save yourself from the chaotic fuss of tourists during your vacation.

Where can you fly to relax in February?

If you have a desire to bask on the warm sea beaches, then the best option would be to look at the resorts of Southeast Asia. Since the Mediterranean is not yet open, February is great for getting to know the beaches of the Asian-African direction. It is there that tourists can fully sunbathe for their pleasure at a fairly budget cost. A good alternative could be the direction towards the Caribbean Sea. But in this case, the flight will significantly increase the cost of the tour, which will cost approximately twice as much as the Asian region.

      Thailand

This country is a constant favorite for winter travel. In the middle of the month, the resort becomes an ideal place where you can go to relax in February at an affordable cost. During this period, Thailand pleases tourists with an inexpensive price and low population. The most popular resorts – Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui – this month have comfortable sunny weather, crystal clear warm sea and a lot of excursion programs. Fans of great exotics will be pleased with the unique Thai cuisine and, of course, therapeutic Thai massage, known throughout the world for its healing properties.

      • The air temperature in February is approximately +33°C.
      • The cost of the tour starts from 600 USD.

      United Arab Emirates

This resort is well suited for tourists who prefer to learn the history and culture of the country more than plunge into the sea water. The sea temperature in February is approximately +22°C. But this does not prevent seasoned Russian tourists from swimming and enjoying the sunny Emirates on the coast. Supporters of a warmer bath can always swim in the hotel pools, which are heated. At this time, there is a chance of precipitation in the country. But a little warm rain always brings only freshness in sunny weather. You can get a tan on the coast of the UAE resorts very well, and shoppers will be pleased with pleasant February discounts.

      • The air temperature in February is +24°C.
      • A trip to the UAE will cost at least 800 USD.

      India (Goa)

Goa in winter is perfect for a beach holiday. For a small price, you can fully experience the real exotic. Therefore, this resort is preferred and loved by a large number of tourists from all over the world. Due to moderate humidity, throughout February, you can appreciate the numerous excursions taking place in Goa. Supporters of cooler weather and fun parties are best to visit the northern part of Goa. But for tourists who come for comfortable warmth and a calm, quiet holiday, South Goa is more suitable.

      • The air temperature in February warms up to +35°C.
      • The cost of the tour will depend on the part of the resort that you have chosen: North Goa will cost 600 USD, and South approximately 800 USD.

      Dominican Republic

In February, the Dominican coast is perfect for a comfortable stay. This is a sunny place where couples with children can fly to relax in February. Entertaining animation programs will keep kids entertained while adults scuba dive and watch the incredible underwater world of the Dominican coast. Low humidity and calm weather attract more and more tourists every year. The national cuisine of the Dominican Republic will appeal to both adults and children.

      • The air in February warms up to about +35°C.
      • Prices for trips are acceptable for tourists of the middle class – about 600 USD.

      Cambodia

A real paradise for eco-tourists. In the resorts of this country you can find not only untouched, pristine nature, but also a rich historical heritage. The tourism business in the country is developing very rapidly, and the government of Cambodia does not spare money for it. In addition to the cleanest air and snow-white beaches, Cambodia attracts vacationers with its democratic prices: you can treat yourself to a 20-minute exotic fish peel or feast on a fried frog with ginger for only $1.

      • The weather in February is quite hot – +35°C.
      • Cambodia is very rich in sights and beautiful beaches, it’s just that this resort is not very advertised. Therefore, the cost of the tour is small – from 300 USD.

Resorts where you can have fun in February

The scientist told why February is warm0001

February spring has already been dubbed the weather that has settled in Astrakhan and some districts of the region this week. The anomalous, as it seems to us, has been keeping warm since last weekend. And at the beginning of this week, the thermometer rose as much as 10 degrees above zero. Even in Akhtubinsk, in the north of the region, on February 2, up to +6 C was recorded. . However, by Wednesday, the 10th, the air may again return to the previous “plus” 9-10 degrees. Here are the swings.
However, is it worth considering the February vagaries so anomalous?

      Nothing anomalous

Dean of the Faculty of Geology and Geography of ASU, Professor Alexander Barmin does not find anything out of the ordinary in the current weather.
“Warm weather in winter is a common occurrence in Astrakhan, there is nothing strange here. This happens almost every winter. It’s just that we don’t remember this, ”he commented to KK on the spring that began in February.

      It used to be stronger

The professor suggested that, according to forecasts, the last month of winter will be quite warm and, according to long-term data, will not go beyond the average temperatures of past years. “The temperature throughout the month will fluctuate between minus 4-6 at night and plus 3-7 during the day. But in Astrakhan, such weather does not always happen in winter. There were also more significant temperature differences in some years from minus 20 to plus 7 on the same days,” the scientist explained.

      Wind – south

Doctor of Geography noted that in February the wind, which will bring relative warm weather, will be southerly up to 60%, and southwesterly up to 40%. “But Astrakhan residents will not feel the north wind, and our region will pass the cold. But it will be cloudy for almost the entire month, and Astrakhan residents will see the sun for only two or three days,” he predicted.

      “It shouldn’t freeze”

According to the scientist, the weather is favorable for agriculture.

Kitesurf in the Dominican Republic: Cabarete, Uvero Alto, Juan Dolio

Kiting in the Dominican Republic is better developed than other types of surfing. The Dominican Republic is the perfect place for this kind of sport. It’s all about suitable conditions, the main of which is a constant even wind. An important role is played by the fact that the Dominican Republic is an island state. Extensive beaches provide many opportunities for the development of entertainment. nine0003

But the main reason that attracts kitesurfers to the Dominican Republic is competition. The peculiarity of these competitions is that they are held here regularly. For their sake, athletes from different countries come to the Dominican Republic. This event is worth at least a look.

      5 reasons to visit

      Skiing level

Trainings from beginner to advanced level

      Kite schools

More than 20 throughout the country. There is a Russian school

      Infrastructure

Very developed. All the necessary conditions have been created

      Prices

The cost of living in hostels and campsites starts from $15. Price for an individual lesson – from about $60

      Visa

      Not required

      Season

Throughout the year the weather conditions on the island are comfortable, the climate is tropical. The surf season in the Dominican Republic lasts all year round. Therefore, it is not necessary to choose the time when it is better to rest. Despite this, there are small differences between the winter and summer periods. nine0003

In summer, the high temperature is felt more strongly due to the high humidity. But still, there is no sharp sensation of heat, thanks to the sea breezes. Often there are hurricanes. This is one of the reasons why there are not so many tourists on the island during the summer. Brave travelers take advantage of this, and they get tours at low prices. The average air temperature is +31℃ during the day, +22℃ in the evening. The average water temperature is +28℃.

The climate is more comfortable in winter. Humidity is low, so the temperature is not felt as much. The average air temperature is +28℃ during the day, +20℃ in the evening. The average water temperature is +26℃. nine0003

In addition to the time of year, weather conditions depend on the region of the country. It is always colder in the central highlands. In December or January, the temperature there can drop below zero. The average annual temperature on the coast is +25℃, and in the central mountainous regions – +16℃. The peak of the heat is almost always in August.

The best time for kitesurfing starts in September and lasts until April. The rainy season lasts from May to July. This is another reason why many people choose not to visit the country during the summer. However, do not draw premature conclusions. It usually rains in the morning and evening. And during the day on the coast, the weather is comfortable for skiing. The middle of summer is considered the best time for kitesurfing in the south of the country. The best period for studying in the north of the country is from September to February. But these marks are conditional. The road from one part of the island to another does not take much time, so tourists have a choice anyway. nine0003

Due to the climatic features of the region, weather conditions are unstable. Usually the rains are short. But sometimes inclement weather continues for several days in a row. And sometimes there is no precipitation for weeks. However, such anomalies rarely occur. Almost always, the tourist is waiting for beautiful sunny weather.

      Spots

Conditions on most beaches are ideal for beginners. But amateurs and professionals will also be able to find suitable spots for themselves. Some kite schools in the Dominican Republic provide access to secret spots that few tourists know about.

      Cabarete

The spots in Cabarete, a small village in the north of the island, are unique. International competitions take place here, beginners and professional athletes come here from all over the world, and the sky resembles an umbrella all year round due to kites. nine0003

Cabarete is located near the city of Puerto Plata. The uniqueness of this place lies in the fact that there is a place for everyone on the beaches. Surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing spots are separated from each other along the coast. There is also a separate beach for swimming, where there is practically no wind. So athletes and vacationers do not interfere with each other, and everyone does their favorite thing.

The great love of athletes for this place is explained by the fact that Cabarete has all the conditions for skiing:

      • warm water, which makes it possible to dispense with a wetsuit;
      • sandy beach without stones;
      • wind blows almost all year round;
      • there are no jellyfish and other unpleasant and dangerous animals in the sea;
      • correct wind direction.

But that’s not all. The place is suitable for teaching beginners as well as for experienced and professional kitesurfers.

      Uvero Alto Beach

And this kitesurfing spot in the Dominican Republic, on the contrary, is the least known. It is located far from the tourist routes in the northeast of the island. But here you can also stop for a kite. There are several good hotels on the beach. Basically, the guests of these hotels and locals know about this place. The territory outside the hotels is not equipped for recreation, and tourists are rarely seen there. nine0003

But the atmosphere is quite calm. Uvero Alto Beach is ideal for lovers of peace.

This is a great place for professional kitesurfers because the waves here are some of the biggest. But for children, swimming in this area is a serious threat.

      Beaches Juan Dolio

Not far from the town of Juan Dolio is the beach of Playa Caribe. The city beach of Juan Dolio is different in that there are almost no waves there. So this place is not suitable for skiing. But Playa Caribe, unlike the local beach, is very popular among kitesurfers. nine0003

      Playa Blanca Beach

This spot is located in a closed area in the hotel area.

3 Tenerife Surf Sports for Beginners

With fantastic weather throughout the year, Tenerife makes an excellent choice for those looking for the best place to go for surfing in Spain for beginners. Located just a few degrees north of the Tropic of Cancer, the powerful swells of the North Atlantic make this island a top spot for fantastic surfing experience and with strong offshore winds to help, other water sports are available all year round. Read on for our guide to the top three Tenerife surf spots for beginners.

Surfing is a fantastic experience on the island throughout the year, but those who live on this surfer’s paradise in the Canary Islands rate October to February as the best months as part of the Tenerife surf season which lasts from September to April. If you were to take a look at a surf map Tenerife, you would see three places that really stand out as perfect for beginners to safely hit the waves.

The water temperature in the Canaries is fantastic for surfing all year round, but you are advised to wear a 2mm or a 3/2mm wetsuit if surfing in the winter months. In summer you can surf without a wetsuit. In summer the temperatures hit around 22 °C whilst in winter they drop to around 18 °C which is a little chilly even for the most hardened of surfer. Wear suitable footwear to protect your feet from urchins on the sea floor and jagged rocks.

      El Arenal

Located in the north of the island, near Punta del Hidalgo and within driving distance of the capital city this is an exposed beach with consistent surf which produces both left and right walls which make it ideal for goofy and regular footed surfers. Surfing here is at its best at mid-tide when there is a two to three-foot swell.

      El Conquistador

In the south of the island on the Costa Adeje near Los Cristianos, is this brilliant beach. With a left and right-handed wave which works best from waist height and holds over-head as well, the middle section of the wave here is perfect for learning turns before the last section of the wave walls up steeply.

      La Tejita

Another hot spot for surfing in Tenerife south, this beach is located near Las Galletas and El Médano. Probably our top choice for beginners, the waters here are crystal clear with a sandy bottom beach setting. The left- and right-hand waves here are perfect for beginners, with a south to south east tail and three to four-foot winds coming from the North and North West. A fantastic choice for a full day’s surfing, whether you are a novice or an expert.

Where to stay on your surfing break

To enjoy everything that Tenerife has to offer, whether it is the best weather in Spain all year round, good food and a town with plenty to do, you need a hotel which offers a relaxing stay.

The Catalonia Oro Negro Hotel in Playa de las Americas is a top choice if you are looking for hotels in Tenerife. An on-site adults’ swimming pool which is heated in winter sits alongside a children’s pool and there is a solarium and hammocks for the ultimate in holiday relaxation after a day on the surf beaches in Tenerife. Playa de las Americas is one of the island’s best places to visit whether you are on holiday as a family as a family or as a couple. The hotel is located near the town centre where there are fantastic restaurants, bars and amazing nightclubs and is only eight minutes on foot from the beach.

        1. Weather in Rome in February

February in Rome is one of the coldest and rainiest months of the year. However, even in winter in the subtropics there are enough sunny and clear days, which would be the envy of summer in countries with a more northern climate. February in Rome is already a couple of degrees warmer than January. But winter is still fighting for its rights, which will be reminded by rains and gusts of cold wind. However, something elusive in the air, in the watercolors in the sky, in the first delicate and timid colors anticipates the imminent approach of spring. And the closer to the end of February, the stronger this feeling. nine0003

Snowfall and frost in Rome in winter are very rare, and photos of frozen Roman fountains and snow against the backdrop of the Colosseum on the Internet only emphasize this fact, because this happens once every few years.

However, it was at the end of February 2018 that snow fell in Rome , brought by the insidious Siberian wind Buran, as the Italian media dubbed it. This has not happened for 6 years, since February 2012! But in 2012 there was light snow. But in 2018, something incredible happened: 3-4 cm of snow fell, the temperature dropped below zero at night, and the next morning the Eternal City woke up in a winter fairy tale 2 days before the calendar spring. However, such a natural phenomenon in Rome in February is a rarity and anomaly, not the norm.

        • Average daily temperature in Rome in February +9° C
        • Maximum daily temperature in Rome in February +14°
        • Minimum daily temperature in Rome in February +3°

        2. Rome in February – how to dress?

As in other winter months in this part of Italy, autumn jacket or coat and comfortable waterproof shoes will be the best choice of clothes. Take a cue from the Romans – dress like cabbage . The sun warmed up – you can take off your jacket, it became colder – take out a hat with gloves.

        Photographer: Mikael Korhonen

Italians (like the French) are very fond of scarves and wear them almost in any weather, so you can’t go wrong if you bring or buy in Italy this stylish and practical accessory. It also doesn’t hurt to pack an umbrella and a waterproof raincoat in your suitcase if you have one.

        3. Holidays in Rome in February

There are not so many holidays in February (compared to December and January, when there was a continuous series of holidays), but they are still there.

        Roman Carnival / Carnevale Romano (February 13 – March 1, 2022)

The Roman authorities are currently deciding whether the carnival will take place this year.

Even if you have never personally attended the carnival in Venice , you must have heard about it. Without exaggeration, the Venice Carnival can be called the most famous in the world. But its Roman counterpart is much less known, although in fact the tradition of carnivals originates precisely in the Eternal City. Some of the customs and rituals of medieval carnivals date back to the ancient Roman Saturnalia and Lupercalia – pagan holidays of fertility and harvest, when it was allowed to do what was not allowed on ordinary days (for example, masters and slaves changed places, and during dinners at the festive table, faces were hidden behind masks ). nine0003

When paganism finally succumbed to the onslaught of Christianity, the traditional holidays did not disappear, but were adapted by the new religion, which invested its significance in them. The dates of carnivals began to depend on the date of the celebration of Easter. The beginning of the carnival (an analogue of Shrovetide among the Slavic peoples) is Sunday Septuagesima , or Pentecost, from which the countdown of 70 days from Easter and 3 weeks before the start of Lent begins.

Carnival end date is “Fat Tuesday”, also known as “Mardi Gras” (mardi gras) in French and martedì grasso in Italian. It is followed by “Ash Wednesday” – the beginning of Lent in the Catholic rite, or the 46th day before the Easter holiday.

Tuesday (Ash Wednesday Eve) was nicknamed Fat because it was the last day when one could indulge in excesses in food (and not only) and fun. And the very word carnevale, according to one version, means “goodbye, meat!” , since immediately after the end of the carnival, Great Lent begins, during which believers must refrain from fast food. nine0003

For centuries, starting from the 10th century, it was the Roman Carnival that was considered one of the main and largest and competed for this title with the Venice Carnival. Carnival in Rome was held with the high permission of the Pope in the presence of the nobility, celebrities and influential people from all over the world.

It was a lavish celebration, during which folk festivals, theatrical performances, processions of masks of the Italian Commedia dell’Arte were organized , street concerts and jousting. During the days of the carnival, food and money were distributed free of charge. On “Fat Tuesday”, on the eve of the beginning of Lent, at dusk, candles (mocoletti) were lit, which symbolized purification, and they played a game – everyone tried to knock the candle out of the neighbor’s hands and at the same time keep their own.

The French writer Alexandre Dumas, describing in his book The Count of Monte Cristo the unrestrained atmosphere of the carnival in Rome, wrote: “…Piazza del Popolo was a picture of a cheerful and noisy orgy. Masks flocked in crowds from everywhere, jumped out of doors, climbed out of windows; from all the streets came carriages loaded with pierros, harlequins, dominoes, marquises, transteverantes, clowns, knights, peasants; they all shouted, waved their arms, threw eggs, confetti stuffed with flour, bouquets, showered jokes and projectiles on their own and others, acquaintances and strangers, and no one had the right to be offended – everyone was answered with laughter “.

But the main spectacle of the Roman Carnival was the race on Barbary horses , which took place between Piazza del Popolo and Piazza Venezia, right along the modern Via del Corso (then Via Lata). Of course, a wild horse race was not safe for spectators, and in the 19th century, after several fatal accidents (and due to a change in the political situation), the Roman carnival was effectively banned.

The revival of the Roman Carnival took place in 2009, and on a much smaller scale – Venice remains the absolute carnival capital. Far from all the traditions of the Roman carnival have survived to this day (after all, many of them cannot be called safe), its duration does not exceed one week, but partly its magic returned to the Roman squares and streets .

The Roman carnival is inferior to the Venetian one in terms of duration and scale. The main events usually start a week before Ash Wednesday. nine0003

But still, this is also a colorful event. Horse guard performances, vintage horse-drawn carriages, theatrical performances, street concerts, processions of masks, a costume contest and a free tasting of Italian dishes – this is an exemplary program of events in Rome. Also, the carnival is considered a children’s holiday, and at this time you can see a lot of Italian kids in masks and costumes on the streets, throwing confetti into the air.

At the Villa Borghese during the Roman Carnival

        Rome’s main carnival venues:

        • Piazza del Popolo
        • Via del Corso
        • Piazza Venezia
        • Piazza Navona
        • Plaza de España

Albania in February: Travel Tips, Weather & More

      Weather

Balkan Albania, in southeastern Europe, enjoys a Mediterranean climate. While summers are hot, winters tend to be relatively mild, especially compared to more northern parts of Europe. However, there’s quite a lot of variety within the geographically small country, with the climates of the coast and mountains different from each other.

While February temperatures can drop well below freezing in the mountains and at higher altitudes, coastal and lower-lying areas of Albania have relatively mild winters. The capital city, Tirana, is cold in February but not exceptionally so: its average monthly temperature is around 55°F (7°C). Cities farther inland, like Korçë, are a bit colder, averaging 37°F (3°C), while coastal areas are warmer.

In general, Albania receives a lot of rain in winter, which can cause problems in mountainous areas, with landslides common.

      Crowds & Costs

Along with the rest of winter, February is the low season for tourism in Albania. However, the country is never as busy as many other countries in the region, even during the busier summer peak season. Albanian ski resort areas (especially those in the country’s southeast) are most active between January and mid-March. Most travelers who visit Albania in winter come for the skiing. Still, even the country’s ski resorts are less busy than those elsewhere in Europe. Albania has been called one of the most affordable ski destinations in Europe.

While off-season travel can be a great way to experience some places without the crowds, it’s worth noting that many resorts and restaurants on the popular Albanian Riviera are seasonal and closed for winter.

      Where to Go

To enjoy a mild winter city break in February, check out Albania’s underrated capital, Tirana. Its mixture of Ottoman and Soviet-era architecture is quite unlike any other European capital. Don’t miss the derelict Piramida, the monuments around Skanderbeg Square, the National History Museum, and Bunk’Art, a museum and gallery in an underground bunker.

Located slightly inland and roughly halfway down the country, Tirana is also a convenient jumping-off point for day and overnight trips elsewhere in Albania. Head to Krujë, north of Tirana, on a day trip to check out the medieval castle and the mountain views. To the south of the capital and a little farther afield is lovely Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with well-preserved Ottoman architecture.

      What to Do

Albania’s ski season runs from January to mid-March, so February is a reliable time to hit the slopes. Head to south-eastern Albania for great ski runs and far fewer people than in the mountains of neighboring European countries. However, the resorts are somewhat less developed than you’d find elsewhere.

The city of Korçë is a good base for snow adventures to ski fields in the Morava Mountains nearby, as well as popular Bigëll/ Dardhë and Voskopojë. Korçë is on a high plateau, and there are cultural attractions to enjoy here, too, when you need a break from skiing, such as visiting the National Museum of Medieval Art and the Ngjallja e Krishtit Cathedral.

From UGS facilities in Europe for the season 2020

      2 min

Only 29% of gas reserves remain in UGS facilities.

Moscow, April 5 – IA Neftegaz.RU. At the end of the season of gas extraction from underground gas storages (UGS) in Europe, a record volume of gas was raised during the publication of open data – 65. 6 billion m 3 .
Gazprom announced this on its Telegram channel.

According to Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), on March 25, 2021, the gas withdrawal season from UGS facilities in Europe ended. nine0019
The volume of selection was a record since 2011
The previous maximum was recorded in 2017-2018, when Europe was covered by the Beast from the East.
So in Europe they called the cyclone, which brought abnormal cold weather with snowfall in February-March 2018.
By March 21, 2018, the occupancy of European UGS facilities was only 19.78%, which allowed Gazprom to set a record for gas supplies in 2018.

Winter season 2020-2021 left only 29% of gas reserves in UGSFs in Europe. nine0019
At the same time, in Germany and Austria – 26% each, in the Netherlands – 23%, in France – 17%.
These countries are included in the 5 ku largest in terms of gas storage capacity.
To restore reserves in UGS facilities, Europe needs to pump in 57. 3% or 23.9 bcm more gas than in 2019
This additional volume is comparable to Gazprom’s total gas exports in 2020 to such large consumers as France and the Netherlands.

That is, the campaign to fill storage facilities that has begun promises to be one of the largest since 2011.
And one of the key factors for the increased demand for gas in the European market.
On April 2, 2021, Gazprom reported that in Q1 Q gas supplies to non-CIS countries increased by 30.7% or by 12.4 bcm 3 to 52.7 bcm 3 .

Recall that at the beginning of February 2021, gas reserves of European UGS facilities fell below 40% due to the atmospheric ice front that covered Europe.
However, as early as 2 and half of February 2021, the cold weather receded and warm favorable weather set in, followed by a decrease in gas withdrawals and reserves began to recover, which in turn led to a decrease in spot prices. nine0019
But at the beginning of March 2021, the cold weather returned, and the temperature dropped below normal again.

In addition, in January 2021, Gazprom began to artificially restrain gas supplies to Europe amid rising prices.
Gazprom removed excess gas from the market in order to avoid a situation in 2020, when an excess of gas in underground storage facilities led to a collapse in prices.
Fearing that the conclusion of a transit contract with Ukraine would be thwarted, Gazprom pumped too much gas into underground storage facilities to supply European consumers with fuel in a stable manner when the temperature drops. nine0005

Next winter will be even worse. IEA predicts gas shortage in Europe | Economy | Money

Warm weather and a high level of occupancy of underground gas storage facilities will allow Europe to survive the coming winter relatively safely, Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Haberturk on December 27 . But by March, UGS stocks will drop to a third of their total capacity, replenishing them will be much more difficult, and next winter will be a real test for the EU. “The risks for Europe this winter are quite low as European gas storage facilities are 90% full. If nothing unforeseen happens and the winter is not cold and long, Europe will survive it,” Fatih Birol said in particular and added: “But in February-March, the stocks in storage will decrease to 30% and increase them to 80-90% by next winter will be very difficult. Get ready for next winter. Next winter will be much harder than this one.”

The reason for the shortage is China and the Russian Federation

An international official substantiated his forecast with the possible complete cessation of gas supplies from Russia, as well as the cancellation of pandemic restrictions in China planned next year, which will provoke an increase in LNG consumption in this country. “This year, China’s imports of liquefied natural gas have decreased, but will increase in the future. It will buy the main volumes of LNG, and there will be little left for Europe. In addition, Europe is still receiving Russian gas this year, in the future it will most likely not be, ”said Birol. nine0005

Russia provided 40-45% of European gas consumption, but after the start of a special operation in Ukraine, the EU countries began to increase LNG purchases and reduce the supply of our pipeline gas. As a result, this autumn we transported only 70-80 million cubic meters to Europe every day. m (through the “Turkish stream” and through the Ukrainian GTS), while a year ago this figure did not fall below 300 million cubic meters. m, and on peak days it exceeded 400 million cubic meters. At the same time, European LNG imports grew by 44.5 billion cubic meters in the first 10 months of this year. m – up to 107 billion cubic meters. But liquefied gas producers were not ready for such a huge increase in purchases – according to the independent agency Rystad Energy, global demand for LNG in 2022 will amount to 436 million tons, and the supply will not exceed 410 million tons. With the end of the Chinese lockdown, the shortage of LNG in the market will only increase, which will predetermine price increases and make it extremely difficult to provide European consumers with energy next winter. nine0005

      Russia warned

The International Energy Agency is certainly a very authoritative organization. But 2 days earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said almost the same thing . “With the latest decisions to introduce a ceiling on gas prices … Western colleagues are provoking a deep long-term crisis, destabilization in Europe,” a Russian official told reporters on December 25 and even substantiated his opinion in detail, “Lockdowns in China restrained demand growth, and warm weather reduced consumption in Europe. However, even despite this, the Europeans had to reduce gas consumption this year by 40-50 billion cubic meters. m of gas due to the closure of enterprises for the production of fertilizers, gas chemistry, and metallurgy. Novak also pointed out that domestic gas production in the European Union will fall in the medium term due to the limited resources of Norway and the UK, and, taking into account all factors, concluded that Europe is facing “an imminent gas shortage.” At that time, European capitals were skeptical about the statements of the Russian Deputy Prime Minister, perhaps the words of the IEA Executive Director will be taken more seriously there. nine0005

But so far, according to forecasts, Europe is fully supplied with gas. The storage occupancy level does not fall below 80%, the cost of natural gas is gradually falling. During trading on December 28, quotes fell by 4.3% to $837 per 1,000 cubic meters. m, although during the year the peak values reached 3.8 thousand dollars per 1 thousand cubic meters. m. In the European gas supply, unlike the proverb, cubic meters are counted in the spring. In March, data on actual reserves in UGS facilities will appear, which will say a lot about the prospects for the EU energy market in the coming years.
