Green Hysland Workshop in Gran Canaria: Exchange on green hydrogen and island systems

Scroll down for the recording and slides!

After Cres, Gran Canaria is the second stop on Green Hysland’s Tour of European islands – its ‘Transferability Roadshow’, aiming to disseminate information on the project, but also to establish synergies and engage with other stakeholders of the green hydrogen sector.

Our host,  the Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC), has been developing innovative solutions to increase Renewable Energy Sources (RES) penetration in small and weak insular electrical grids for over 25 years. Green hydrogen quickly presented itself as an interesting technology.

ITC’s Facilities in Pozo Izquierdo are home to the first hydrogen activities ever in the Canary Islands. We started our activities on hydrogen technologies 20 years ago with feasibility studies. We jumped to technical installations 16 years ago. We are also advising our local administrations with their energy transition plan and new hydrogen strategy. Gonzalo Piernavieja, Technical Director of the Canary Islands Institute

ITC’s vast experience was further demonstrated first by Santiago Díaz Ruano, who presented the green hydrogen roadmap in the Canary Islands, embodied in the document prepared by the Institute together with the rest of the support strategies for the Canary Islands Energy Transition Plan ( PTECan 2030) led by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Climate Change and Territorial Planning of the Government of the Canary Islands.

Later during the day,  Salvador Suárez García, head of the Renewables Department at ITC showed the steps the Technological Centre is taking in the implementation of infrastructures for research and testing of new renewable fuels for sustainable mobility, especially aimed at public transport. A key project currently under development in this domain is Biogreenfinery (Green Hydrogen for biorefinery), co-funded by the EU’s Recovery Aid Fund and the regional government of the Canaries. The biorefinery will operate in a self-consumption regime isolated from the grid through a hybrid wind-photovoltaic-biodiesel system that will provide the renewable energy necessary to produce hydrogen and synthesis fuels derived from it. This biorefinery will be the first in the Canary Islands to operate in isolated network conditions.

The workshop aimed to bring together ITC representatives with experts from the Green Hysland project, in order to compare their experience and discuss how to accelerate the decarbonization of islands through green hydrogen technologies. Green Hysland was represented by Enagas Renovable, Redexis, CALVERA, University La Laguna, and the Spanish Hydrogen Association (Aeh3).

Carlos Navas Pérez (Enagas Renovable), the coordinator of the project, first laid the ground by explaining the context in which Green Hysland was developped and the structure of the pilot: 2 PV plants to produce the green hydrogen, a pipeline to distribute the hydrogen to different end-user applications (hotel, municipal building, transport applications, port), and some of the h3 to be injected into the natural gas distribution network. Most of these activities will be in operation in the course of 2023. By the end of the project (december 2025), Green Hysland hopes to avoid 21,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

When developing a green hydrogen project, it is essential to have some procedures in place to manage the administative processing. As explained by Pablo Martínez Fondón from Redexis, there is a quite diverse picture on the current status of national legal and technical framework in regards to hydrogen implementation in Europe. In Spain, a lot of national decrees were introduced since the start of the Green Hysland project in order to simplify the procedures.

Green Hysland was a first timer. It opened the way and even anticipated the establishment of the necessary regulatory frameworks.Pablo Martínez Fondón, Innovation Operational Support at Redexis

Moving to technical considerations, David Capapey shared the large experience of Calvera on the storage and transport of high-pressure hydrogen through several projects they are involved in. Calvera is a leading manufacturer of h3 equiments in Europe who dedicates a part of its revenues on research, and carefully studies the needs and requirements of each project, in order to adapt the design of their equiments accordingly. In Green Hysland, they are provide two tube trailers to distribute the green h3 to the different end-users. In addition, they will also provide the storage unit for the Port of Palma as well as an uploading panel to reload the storage from the tube trailer and supply the hydrogen to the fuel cell. Therefore, integration of all equiments is key for this kind of hydrogen projects.

The presentation of Ricardo Luis Guerrero Lemus, professor at University La Laguna, allowed to give the perspective of a Follower Territory of Green Hysland. These seven Territories aim to replicate the Mallorca pilot, and the first step in this regard is analysis of the local situation through different studies. Ricardo thus presented the current situation in Tenerife and the Canary Islands, and the potential for the increase of RES penetration and production of hydrogen on the island.

There is no such thing as hydrogen economy, but rather a energy economy. Hydrogen will be a facilitator for introducing more and more renewable energy into the system and is not an objective per se. The objective is to make sure we go towards a green future, and green hydrogen will help us to get there.Enrique Girón, Technical director at Spanish Hydrogen Association (Aeh3)

Our last speaker of the day, Enrique Girón (Aeh3) started with this powerful statement. For a fast transition into hydrogen technologies, he argued that even though these technologies are advanced and some are already in the market, research and development is crucial in order to continue to improve them and to decrease the costs. Regarding islands, each one is different and stakeholders have to understand their energy and storage capacities.

Onsite participants had the privilege to participate in an open discussion on challenges and opportunities related to the topic, and to visit ITC Facilities and innovation projects in Pozo Izquierdo which deal with RES production and storage, but also biotechnology (production and processing of marine microalgae) and innovation/support to entrepreneurship.

COP15: Why the world needs a new deal to protect nature

About 195 countries from Dec 7 will be tasked with finalising a new global biodiversity deal to halt damage to ecosystems, similar to the 2015 Paris Agreement

Hard on the heels of this month’s fractious COP27 climate talks in Egypt, exhausted environmentalists are shifting their attention to another upcoming UN green summit, known as COP15.

At the Dec 7-19 gathering in Montreal, about 195 countries will be tasked with finalising a new global biodiversity deal to halt damage to plants, animals and ecosystems – similar to the 2015 Paris Agreement to tackle climate change.

Hit by pandemic delays and moved from China due to COVID-19 restrictions, negotiations on the nature protection pact took place in March and June, but observers have been frustrated by their slow progress.

Boosting conservation and management of natural areas, such as parks, oceans, forests and wildernesses, is seen as crucial to safeguarding the ecosystems on which humans depend and to limiting global warming to internationally agreed targets.

Here’s what to expect from COP15 – the 15th conference of parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) – and what it aims to achieve:

WHAT IS THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY?

Signed at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 and later ratified by about 195 countries – not including the United States – the UN convention is designed to safeguard plant and animal species, and ensure natural resources are used in sustainable ways.

It also seeks “fair and equitable sharing” of the benefits from natural genetic material, used in everything from medicines to new crop varieties.

That means ensuring indigenous people and countries that are home to biological riches gain from their exploitation.

“COP15 is absolutely vital to reversing the nature crisis we’re witnessing,” said Margaret Kuhlow, finance lead at green group WWF International.

“This is the moment we’ve all been waiting for – for world leaders to finally come together and agree on the next decade of conservation targets and take actions to reverse biodiversity loss to protect and preserve our life on Earth,” she added.

China holds the COP15 presidency, although the summit will take place in Montreal, the seat of the CBD secretariat, as Beijing continues to grapple with COVID-19.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend COP15, despite China’s plan not to invite heads of state – a decision criticised by green groups. Chinese President Xi Jinping is not expected to go.

WHY IS IMPROVING NATURE PROTECTION SO IMPORTANT?

People depend on nature, from oceans to wildernesses, to supply them with clean air and water – and to regulate rainfall that is vital for growing food crops. When ecosystems are harmed, their basic life support services can falter, scientists say.

And because plants absorb planet-heating carbon dioxide to grow, strengthening conservation is widely seen as one of the cheapest and most effective ways to slow climate change.

But forests and other ecosystems are still being destroyed, often to expand agriculture and production of commodities like palm oil, soybeans and beef, to feed a growing world population.

“Human activities are causing the largest loss of life on Earth since the extinction of dinosaurs,” said Toerris Jaeger, head of the Rainforest Foundation Norway.

“Our behaviour and the way we produce and consume are putting at least 1 million species at risk of extinction according to science, more than ever before in human history.”

WHAT IS COP15 AIMING TO ACHIEVE?

The summit hopes to set both long-term nature-protection goals for mid-century, as well as shorter-term targets for 2030, and to push for those to be enshrined in national policies.

That mostly did not happen with previous global targets to slash biodiversity loss, set in 2002 and 2010, which were largely missed. They also suffered from a lack of finance.

Global annual spending to protect and restore nature on land needs to triple this decade to about $350 billion by 2030, a UN report said last year.

The need for more money to help developing nations meet the goals of any new nature deal has been a sticking point during the talks, although China launched a new fund for that purpose.

Other COP15 focus areas include recognition of the rights and leadership of indigenous peoples and local communities in safeguarding biodiversity, and phasing down or reallocating subsidies that are harmful to nature.

There has been wide support for a central pillar of the planned nature pact: a goal to conserve at least 30% of the planet’s land and oceans by 2030, known as “30×30”.

It has now gained the backing of at least 110 nations, a big boost from 70 a year ago, leaders said at the COP27 climate summit.

WHICH COUNTRIES ARE LEADING THE PUSH FOR A NEW NATURE PACT?

Countries calling for more ambitious nature protection from COP15 include Canada, European Union states, Costa Rica, Colombia and Britain, according to conservationists.

Some officials have called for stronger political leadership from China to ensure a successful outcome.

The United States never ratified the original CBD treaty and so does not play a formal role in negotiations, although it will send a delegation to COP15 and recently appointed Monica Medina as special envoy for biodiversity and water resources.

In addition, President Joe Biden has pledged to protect at least 30% of US land and coastal waters by 2030, as part of the broader international campaign for 30×30.

Many developing countries, however, have yet to back the goal, hoping to extract more money from richer nations, which rely on the commodities poorer states supply, observers say.

And some political leaders are still betting on exploitation of their countries’ natural resources to lift people out of poverty – especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The largest risks are distracted global leaders, some outright opponents of ambitious action on biodiversity, and the failure of wealthy nations to provide adequate financing to implement an agreement,” said Brian O’Donnell, director of the U. S.-based Campaign for Nature.

“Several wars and regional conflicts, energy price spikes, inflation and budget challenges have drawn attention and leadership away from nature,” he added.

CAN CLIMATE AND NATURE ACTION WORK HAND IN HAND?

How countries monitor, report and ramp up their promises of action will be key to the success of a new biodiversity deal, said Georgina Chandler, an international policy expert at the UK-based Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

“We have the opportunity to create a framework with more measurability, accountability and commitment to delivery,” she said, adding there was concern those aspects may not be secured as part of an agreement at COP15.

Protecting and restoring ecosystems is also seen as essential to meeting the Paris Agreement goals, while the impacts of climate change are having devastating impacts on nature around the planet, said Chandler.

“There are shared climate and biodiversity problems with shared solutions,” she said, pointing to planet-heating emissions from deforestation and farming activities, which also drive nature loss.

Climate change impacts and adaptation — European Environment Agency

Context

Climate change has already led to a wide range of impacts on the environment, the economy, and society.[1][2] These impacts have been felt both in Europe and across the world. Even if greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were to stop today, climate change would continue for many decades as a result of past emissions and the inertia of the climate system.[2] It is therefore necessary to adapt to the changes that have already occurred and to prepare for plausible scenarios of future climate change.

To help promote this adaptation, the European Commission in 2013 adopted the communication ‘An EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change’.[3] The communication supports adaptation actions in countries, and promotes better research and information-sharing. It also supports ‘mainstreaming’, the process whereby adaptation concerns are integrated into existing sectoral EU policies (like agriculture or regional development). Overall it aims to help make Europe more climate-resilient, enhancing its capacity to respond to the impacts of climate change at local, regional, national, and EU levels.

Adaptation is also considered in other EU initiatives, particularly Europe 2020 — Europe’s growth strategy,[4] and the Resource-Efficient Europe flagship initiative.[5] Moreover, a new international climate change agreement is expected to be negotiated by the end of 2015. Several adaptation-related elements of such an agreement are currently being discussed. These include capacity building, institutional arrangements, financing, incentives for private investments, and provisions promoting transparency through monitoring, reporting and verification.

Key trends

Climate change impacts

Human influence — primarily emissions of greenhouse gases, but also changes in land use — has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century. The last decade was the warmest since global temperature records became available.  Climate change impacts can be seen in accelerating global sea-level rise, in changes in various climate extremes and in changes in the global water cycle. Precipitation has generally increased in northern and north-western Europe, but has generally decreased in southern Europe. Snow cover in Europe has been decreasing, and the extent and volume of Arctic sea ice have been decreasing much faster than previously projected[1][2] (see SOER 2015 briefing on the air and climate system; and on climate change).

Observed climate change has already led to a wide range of impacts on environmental systems, economic sectors, and human health and well-being in Europe. These impacts vary across Europe depending on climatic, geographic and socio-economic conditions. Figure 1 shows key observed and projected impacts from climate change for the main biogeographical regions in Europe.

Adaptation

These climate change impacts have spurred policymakers at national and European level to introduce adaptation policies that will help societies and economies to cope with the effects of climate change and socio-economic changes.

On a European level, ‘mainstreaming’ of climate change adaptation is taking place within various EU policies, such as freshwater and coastal management, biodiversity and nature protection, and disaster-risk reduction.[6][7]

In order to assist the development of adaptation policies in Europe, the EU maintains a website, the European Climate Adaptation Platform (Climate-ADAPT). Climate-ADAPT enhances the sharing of up-to-date, reliable, and targeted information and data. It supports the development and implementation of adaptation policies across all levels of governance in Europe, for example by providing examples of adaptation options, case studies of implemented actions, and an adaptation-support tool.

On the national level — and at the city and regional levels — implementing adaptation is still at an early stage.[8][9] Most progress has been reported for freshwater management, flood-risk management, and agriculture. The adaptation actions in these sectors have mostly consisted of ‘mainstreaming’ adaptation priorities into these national sectoral policy areas.

Although adaptation implementation is still at an early stage, adaptation planning work is underway in most countries. As of June 2014, 20 EEA member countries have adopted national adaptation strategies (13 more than in 2008). 17 of these countries have also developed an adaptation national action plan to help further define the adaptation actions they will implement.[7]

Most European countries report that the level of public awareness regarding the need for adaptation has increased during the past five years and that adaptation has reached the national political agenda.

On a transnational level, adaptation action is mainly the result of shared natural resources such as transboundary water catchments. Transnational cooperation of this sort is often supported by European funding instruments (e.g. in the Baltic Sea region) and through European regional conventions (e.g. the Danube Commission).

Prospects

Climate change impacts

In the long term, the magnitude and rate of climate change depends on future global greenhouse gas emissions. The European Union is committed to limiting global temperature increase to below 2 °C above the pre-industrial level, as agreed globally under the UNFCCC. However, the projected rise in global average temperatures over the 21st century is 0.3 °C–1.7 °C for the lowest emission scenario, and 2.6 °C–4.8 °C for the highest emission scenario.[2]

Figure 2: Projected changes in annual mean temperature (left) and annual precipitation (right)

Source: Climate change projections for Europe based on an ensemble of regional climate model simulations provided by the EURO-CORDEX initiative.
Note: Projected changes are for 2071-2100, compared to 1971-2000, based on the average of a multi-model ensemble forced with the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 8.5 high emissions scenario. All changes marked with a colour (i.e. not white) are statistically significant. Individual models from the EURO-CORDEX ensemble or high-resolution models for smaller regions may show different results.
Indicators: Global and European temperature (CSI 012), Mean precipitation (CLIM 002).

Annual average land temperatures over Europe are projected to continue increasing by more than the global average temperature. The largest temperature increases are projected over eastern and northern Europe in winter, and over southern Europe in summer. Annual precipitation is generally projected to increase in northern Europe and to decrease in southern Europe, thereby enhancing the differences between currently wet regions and currently dry regions (Figure 2). The intensity and frequency of extreme weather events is also projected to increase in many regions, and sea-level rise is projected to accelerate significantly.[1]

Climate change may increase existing vulnerabilities and deepen socio-economic inbalances in Europe. Major climate risks for Europe include increased coastal and river floods, significant reduction in water availability, and extreme heat events. [10] According to a recent study, under a high-emission scenario and in the absence of adaptation actions, some climate impacts would roughly double by the end of this century. Heat-related deaths would reach about 200 000 per year; the cost of river flood damages would exceed EUR 10 billion/year; and every year forest fires would affect an area about 800 000 ha. In this scenario, people affected by droughts would also increase by a factor of seven to about 150 million per year, and welfare loss due to sea-level rise would more than triple to EUR 42 billion/year.[11]

Adaptation

Adaptation policy at the European level will receive new financial resources in the coming years. 20% of the EU budget for 2014–2020 will be used for climate-related actions (i.e. adaptation and climate-change mitigation). This funding will be disbursed to Member-State level through a range of EU funds such as the European Regional Development and Cohesion Funds, European Structural and Investment funds, LIFE+ projects, and the INTERREG regional cooperation funds. [12][7]

In 2017, the European Commission will report to the European Parliament and the Council on the state of implementation of the 2013 communication ‘An EU Strategy on adaptation to climate change’, and will propose its review if needed.

Assessment processes are also in place at national level, and will lead to better knowledge in the future about effective adaptation. Four European countries are currently implementing a monitoring, reporting or evaluation scheme. Nine countries have already developed — or are developing — indicators on climate change impacts, risks or adaptation.

Climate change risk or vulnerability assessments are available for 21 European countries, but more information is still needed, particularly on the estimated benefits and costs of different adaptation options. Another area that requires more research is the issue of how best to craft adaptation responses in the light of uncertainty concerning future climate change impacts, societal change, and the effectiveness of adaptation responses.

Where to walk in Southern Europe for the best weather

Do you have any questions?

Written by

FionaOutdoors

One of the top reasons for heading to Southern Europe for a walking holiday is for warm and sunny weather. Of course, the weather can never be accurately predicted months in advance, but there are some comforting averages that give people the confidence to book a trip.

While some people like the conditions to be hot with back-to-back days of sunshine, others prefer weather that is a bit warmer than the days back home, or they like to travel at a time of year that offers the chance of brighter blue skies and less rain. Southern Europe is also referred to as “Mediterranean Europe” and includes the countries of Spain, Portugal, Italy, southern France, Greece, Malta and Turkey. We take a look at the weather of Southern Europe throughout the year so that you can choose the best time for you to go on a walking holiday.

Where to go: November to March

This part of the year, which is normally winter for people living in the western areas of the world, can be the coldest and wettest. Certainly, for the UK and northern European countries, it’s a time when you take your chances on a daily basis with how chilly, rainy or even snowy it will be.

Madeira can offer favourable winter weather.

There are some locations in southern Europe that can be a good bet for a warmer weather walking holiday. These include the Canary Islands, where temperatures can rise to 18 or 19C in December, January and February, and 20C in November and March. There is a risk of rain, however, and the total rainfall in these winter months can be higher than in the UK, although it usually rains heavily for a spell and then dries up, rather than the non-stop lighter rain traditionally associated with the cooler months in Britain. Another couple of places to consider for warmer weather winter walking are Malta and Madeira.

Where to walk: April and May

Temperatures start to hot up in southern Europe as spring and summer arrive. These months benefit from reduced rainfall, too, and if you enjoy walking in warm conditions but without an intense mid-summer sun this is the time to travel. Recommended destinations include Turkey’s Antalya Coast, Greece mainland and islands, Spain mainland and islands, Malta, Portugal and Madeira, Italy.

Greece and its many islands is a lovely place to walk in early summer.

You should note that there can be sudden downpours of rain at times but usually they are short-lived and the temperatures allow you to dry out quickly if you get caught. The best idea is to carry lightweight waterproof jackets for walking holidays at these times. These months can still be quite quiet because they are outwith the popular tourist high season and this means they are both attractive in terms of crowds and also for favourable prices.

June, July, August and September

The traditional summer season can be hot. Some people like to travel when the sun is at its warmest and there is less chance of rain. You are far more likely to enjoy long hot days of sunshine in all areas of southern Europe in the summer months.

Head to higher places in the hot summer months, such as the mountains of the Canary Islands.

If you travel at this time for a walking holiday you could plan to get up early and walk before the sun is at its hottest around mid-day and then walk again in the later afternoon. Or choose a walking holiday take you to higher altitude or along the coast so you will benefit from cooling breezes.

One of the best months: October

October is a great month for walking in southern Europe. The weather is often quite stable and the landscape begins to take on the hues of autumn so it can be particularly beautiful. The rain levels will be higher than the summer months but they can often be lower than in the spring and early summer months. This month, as well as September, can be fantastic for a walking holiday. Take a look at Macs Adventure’s wide choice of European walking holidays.

Ski Europe

different °C

March is considered the end of the season in ski resorts, so planning to spend a vacation there in March can save a lot of money. It is during this month that popular European ski resorts become relatively affordable. The weather is usually sunny and warm, there is no abundance of tourists, prices are lower than seasonal, and the quality of the ski slopes is still at the proper level. Ski hotels in high-altitude villages and towns in France, Austria, Andorra, Switzerland, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland in early spring serve tourists as actively as in the winter season. These comfortable conditions will last until the end of March, and lovers of skiing and snowboarding, who for some reason did not have time to visit these resorts in winter, can still catch up. Moreover, at lower prices, using the discount systems provided by bases and hotels in March.

Sightseeing Europe

different °C

March is a good month for sightseeing tours to European countries, especially those located in the south. During this period, warm weather sets in, which is suitable for excursions and sightseeing. There are still few tourists during this period, there is no noise made by them, crowds and queues. Almost ideal weather in March will accompany trips to Spain and Italy, Greece and the Czech Republic, France and Germany. Excursion routes may include visits to nature reserves, medieval cities, ancient castles, temples, museums and much more.

Maldives

+31 °C

March is the final month of the dry period in the Maldives, followed by the rainy season. That is why there are so many tourists here in March – they are those who rush to enjoy the sunny days that the prevailing monsoon of the northeast direction of Iruwai provides. With the approach of summer, the amount of precipitation increases, but so far they are shed in the form of short rains and mainly on the southern islands. In March, the heat rises, but it does not feel like sweltering heat, the chic Maldivian beaches are full of vacationers. During the daytime, the air temperature is about +31°C and is perceived as comfortable. Water during this period warms up to +29°C and it is pleasant to dive into it even at night. Visa to the Maldives.

Dominican Republic

+30 °C

The weather in the Dominican Republic in March is similar to February, only the temperature is a couple of degrees higher this month. The amount of precipitation is gradually increasing, but there are still few rainy days (no more than five). At the same time, relative humidity is low, which is good news for those who do not tolerate stuffiness. This is the last month with stable favorable weather (in April it becomes unbearably hot and stuffy in the Dominican Republic due to high humidity), which is why there are so many tourists here in March. There are especially many tourists with children, as this period coincides with spring break. At noon, the air here warms up to an average of +30°C, at night it drops to +20°C. The highest daily temperature is in San Juan (+31°C), the lowest is in Punta Cana (+28°C). March is considered one of the best months for a beach holiday on this tropical island located near the equator, where every month of the year is summer.

Sri Lanka

+30 °C

March in Sri Lanka is the perfect month for a holiday with beautiful weather, which is known to tourists all over the world. This is the only month when you can safely travel around the island without the risk of getting into a tropical hurricane or a downpour. Daytime air temperature in March is about +30°C, ocean water temperature is about +28°C. In addition to beach holidays, the island attracts tourists with its comfortable hotels, the opportunity to see real tropical forests with exotic flora and fauna, famous tea plantations, majestic Buddhist temples, taste local cuisine and get acquainted with the history of the country.

Vietnam

+30 °C

Vietnam is a meridional country and the climate of the northern and southern parts of the territory are significantly different. However, in March, at the height of the “dry” season, the contrast between north and south is much smoother. This is a period of relatively low humidity and lack of stuffiness, a period of comfortable temperature. In the northern part of the country, the daily air temperature reaches +18°C to +22°C, in the central part and in the south of the country it is sunny, the temperature can reach +33°C.

UAE

+27 °C

March in the UAE is the month when the transition from cold to warm seasons takes place. Therefore, the air temperature in the second half of the month is significantly higher than in the first. In the resorts of the northwestern coast of the country, the temperature rises to + 28 ° C during the day, and up to + 27 ° C in the east. The sea water is still not warm enough, but it is already possible to swim, the water temperature reaches +23°C. The UAE in March is a good place for beach lovers, at this time there is still no exhausting heat, and if there are rains, then in very small quantities. But tourists in the UAE are attracted not only by beaches, the fact is that the beginning of spring in the country is the time of all kinds of festivals that have unprecedented popularity in the world and attract a huge number of guests here. Among the many festivals, a special place is occupied by the famous shopping festival, which lasts from the end of March to the second week of April.

Thailand

+30 °C

March in Thailand is usually sunny and stable, hot enough for a first-class beach holiday. At this time, there is still no April hell, but the thermometer is gradually creeping up. March is a transitional month between dry and hot seasons. It is better to choose the beginning of the month. The tourist dry season in March is already ending, which has a number of advantages: the absence of a large number of tourists and, as a result, lower prices. A trip to Thailand in March will cost much less and this is in the presence of wonderful weather. The average air temperature is usually +30-32°C, sea water +30°C. The ideal and most comfortable place at this time is the coast.

Jordan

+25 °C

In Jordan, March is the last month of the “low” season turning into “high”. And it is in March that tourists have the opportunity to try all the pleasures “in one bottle”: the air has warmed up enough for walks and excursions to the sights that the country is rich in, and in the southern regions the weather is already quite suitable for relaxing on the sea coast. There is practically no rain this month. The average daily air temperature in the center of the country and in the north is from +16°C to +20°C, in the southern part – from +24°C to +28°C. A trip to Jordan in March will cost at an average price, and most hotels offer all sorts of discounts. Fans of outdoor activities will enjoy excursions to Jerash, Amman and Ajulan, safaris in nature reserves, passive ones – the beaches of the Dead Sea and Aqaba.

India

+30 °C

In the Indian state of Goa, located on the west coast, in March, the air temperature gradually increases with a simultaneous increase in humidity – the rainy season is approaching, which will begin in June. But for now, there is a comfortable beach atmosphere with a daytime temperature of +31°C, while the water temperature is +28°C – the perfect combination for swimming in the sea. In addition, in Goa you can make interesting excursions that introduce tourists to natural and man-made attractions.

China (Hainan)

+30 °C

In March, on the Chinese tropical island of Hainan, the ideal weather for a beach holiday sets in: with decreasing humidity, the air temperature rises to + 30 ° C, water – up to + 25 ° C. Passive rest can be combined with excursions: dormant volcanoes, hot springs, mountain rivers, combined with secluded restaurants of local cuisine.

About Morocco | Resorts Morocco | Weather in Morocco

The proximity of the Atlantic and the Sahara Desert, numerous plains and the Atlas Mountains – all this forms the weather of Morocco, making it unique and quite diverse. Due to this geographical location, several climatic zones are divided on the territory of the country. In the northern part of the state, a Mediterranean climate reigns, in the center of Morocco – continental, along the ocean coast – Atlantic, and on the southern and eastern side – a desert zone. The weather conditions on the coast of the country are conducive to sunbathing and swimming throughout the year. But in the winter season in the northern regions it can be quite cold.

The warmest month is August. The temperature in the daytime is +30 degrees, at night it drops to +20. The coldest period of the year falls in the middle of winter – January. At this time, during the day, the mark on the thermometer does not rise above +18 degrees, and with the advent of night, it varies around up to +8, +10. In addition, the most significant amount of precipitation falls in winter. In December, their number is 90 mm.

And on the western coast of the country, due to the cool Canary current, the weather is never excessively hot. In the daytime, cold air with fogs is predominantly observed. The Atlas Mountains, stretching from the southwest to the northeast, act as a natural barrier to the penetration of raw sea air into the cities of Morocco. For this reason, most precipitation is typical for mountainous and foothill areas – more than 1700 mm annually. In the winter months, snow can fall above 1,500 m, and a dense snow cap is observed at an altitude of 2,000 m, which lasts for 60 days.

In the central regions of the state beyond the mountain ranges, during the summer season, the atmospheric temperature during the day is often +40 degrees. In the winter months at the same time, the mark on the thermometer shows +20. There is not much precipitation in this area – about 200 mm per year.

Sometimes cyclones come from the Sahara, bringing dry hot winds to coastal areas, often reaching hurricane power. The locals call them “shergs”, in European countries they are called “sirocco”.

The hottest weather reigns in Marrakech. In the summer months, the temperature here reaches +40 degrees in the daytime, +24 degrees in the dark.

The best period for a trip to the resorts of the country is autumn or spring. In summer it is quite hot here, and in the winter months strong winds often blow, and the air temperature does not exceed +15 degrees. However, this time is suitable for sightseeing tours.

Weather in Thailand in March

Weather in Pattaya

Pattaya is a wonderful place, because it is located in the bay, and this guarantees a calm sea. When in 2011 the south of Thailand was drowned from the Andaman Sea, there was not even a tide in Pattaya. It is far from the northeast and therefore heavy rains in the off-season do not reach it. However, it obeys the general climatic norms and it is still worth going to Pattaya during the season, because this is a coastal region and almost everyone is counting on a beach holiday. November, December and February are the driest and most comfortable weather in Pattaya. But from February it gets so hot that until 12 only psychos sunbathe without an umbrella,0005

you can get sunburned in such a sun in less than an hour

before 14 you can walk along the streets only in dashes from one Sevenileven * to another and this sultry disgrace recedes only at 16:00. By May, the monsoons completely fall asleep and hellish heat sets in. Relief brings the rainy season, which begins in the second week of May and lasts until October, and then again great weather.

Weather features, water and air temperature

March in Thailand is a hot season. It lasts approximately from March to May, although there is no clear division into dry and wet seasons: in different months, the rains flood different resorts in the country.

BANGKOK
In Thailand in March 2021
Water temperature
Phuket +29…30°C +26…28°C +30°C
Pattaya +29…30°C +26…28°C

Samui +28 … 29 ° C +28 … 30 ° C +30 ° C
+32 . .. 34 ° C +25 … 27 ° C 9ATHER

The water and air temperature at this time is high, and is approximately the same in all resorts of the country. Almost all days of the month are sunny, with the exception of the eastern regions of the country, where it rains regularly, about 3 times a week. nine0005

You can not take warm clothes, you can walk day and night in dresses and swimsuits. But it’s better to grab an umbrella. And, of course, stock up on hats and sunscreen – there is nowhere without them.

Water temperature deserves a special mention. She is what is called “fresh milk” – ideal for a long bath. It is impossible to freeze here, even if the wind blows. A good time for diving, which is very popular in Thailand.

Prices for tours

The month of March is the period when tour operators and airlines deliberately reduce prices for accommodation, flights, services. The chances of getting a ticket with significant discounts, promotions, or becoming the owner of a last-minute tour increase. The popularity of Thailand in the Thai climate, water temperature and healthy air, which has a beneficial effect on health. Weather in Thailand in November

From the end of October to the beginning of November is the time of the next weather change.
On the Andaman Sea (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi, Lanta) the weather returns to normal – the rains end smoothly, the sea calms down and becomes pleasant for swimming and travel, ferry navigation opens, prices rise to the ceiling – in general, a normal tourist season:)

The weather is getting sad in the Gulf of Thailand. On the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, tourists watch the rains, smoothly turning into floods and rough seas.

In Chiang Mai in November, the weather is even and dry. Everyone is getting ready for Loy Krathong.

Rainy season (May-October)

The most unpredictable tourist season in Thailand falls during the rainy season. From year to year, the intensity, frequency and duration of monsoons differ significantly. Be prepared for the fact that it will rain every day. This does not mean that the downpour will last continuously, 24 hours a day. But for several hours during the day, and more often at night, vacationers will have to watch the tropical elements. The average humidity level is kept at around 90%, the temperature very rarely drops below 29°C. This is a real bath – hot, humid and stuffy.

On the Andaman coast (west), the rainy season is stronger than in other regions of the country. Precipitation begins in April and continues until the end of November. The heaviest showers and hurricane winds are in September and October. During this period, floods often occur, which literally cut off entire areas from civilization. Going on a trip during the rainy season, you should prepare for the fact that the route will need to be adjusted. Unless, of course, you don’t want to stay in Thailand for an extra 2-3 months until the water level drops. nine0005

The East Coast and its islands are less affected by wayward monsoons than the Andaman archipelago. It rains from October to January, the peak of the wet season here is in November.

Holidays and celebrations in Thailand in March

March is rich in various events with large-scale celebrations. At this time, not far from Bangkok, a major Sak-yant festival is taking place, which offers an extraordinary spectacle – tattoos that the monks of the local monastery put on the body for everyone. The procedure is quite painful, since the use of anesthesia is not expected, but it’s worth it, since it is believed that such tattoos are a kind of protection for their owner from various external influences, as well as a talisman that attracts good luck in various matters (love, business). At the end of the drawings on the body, the monks begin some kind of prayer, from which those people who are marked with a new drawing fall into a trance, start running and screaming until the monastery servants sprinkle them with holy water. nine0005

March 17 is Muay Thai Day. The festival takes place in the old part of the city of Attyutthai. By visiting it, you can witness various fights with a demonstration of martial arts.

The Petchaburi province (Cha-am city) hosts a kite festival, and if your trip is scheduled for the first days of March, then you can still catch the Hua Hin Balloon Festival (runs from mid-February to March 6). Here you can not only stare at the flying balls, but also ride one of them yourself for a fee. nine0005

From 11 to 13 March, Koh Chang hosts the International Fishing Competition. It will be very interesting for fishing lovers, and almost everyone can participate.

About 80 kilometers from the capital of Thailand, on March 13 (Elephant Day), spectacular events are held with the participation of elephants.

From March 23rd to April 5th, Bangkok hosts an international car show. Luxurious cars from various international companies and beautiful women are guaranteed. nine0005

As you can see, March is quite a busy month, when Thailand hosts many different festivals and exhibitions. Therefore, going here in the first spring month, you can enjoy not only beautiful nature and sunny weather, but also get unforgettable impressions from visiting various national holidays and events.

Which region is best for a holiday in March

The least suitable region for a holiday in March is the north of the country, but this is more true for the second half of the month, when the heat and drought really become unbearable. nine0005

In Bangkok, the weather is also hot at this time, so it is better to plan excursions and walks around the city in the morning and evening, when the heat subsides.

But for a beach holiday on the Andaman coast, this month is quite suitable, since the hot season is much easier to spend on the seashore, enjoying the light breeze.

Well, the most pleasant region for a holiday in March is the southwest of the Gulf of Thailand, where the hot season has not yet come into its own, and the weather is comfortable. nine0005

By the way, if you are just going to Thailand, but have not yet chosen a hotel, then I advise you to look at the hotellook search engine website (there you can find the best deals from 40 booking systems) or search the map of hotels where you would like to stay:

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is located in the north of Thailand and is the cultural capital of the country, similar to St. Petersburg in Russia. Since this region is not very hot in March and there are showers, this time of year is ideal for exploring the resort. nine0005

A huge number of historical buildings, temples, palaces and other attractions are concentrated on its territory. Since the air temperature in the daytime does not exceed +25, you can safely go on long excursion programs. In general, the climatic conditions are reminiscent of the weather that is set in the middle zone of Russia in the summer.

If you want to “refresh” yourself even more, you should visit Chiang Mai Mountains, where in the daytime the air temperature warms up to +10… +15 degrees. nine0005

  • Daytime +25 in the city.
  • At night +21.

Where to go in May

Phuket

Phuket

This island has long established itself as one of the best tourist destinations. May is not a reason to abandon your journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
What attracts tourists to Phuket? Phuket is a favorite destination for many vacationers, as it has picturesque nature, well-groomed white beaches, and clear sea water. The island does not suffer from a lack of attractions and interesting places. The infrastructure of Phuket is well developed, there are many hotels, cafes, nature reserves, discos and various establishments. nine0005

It is still beautiful here, you can enjoy picturesque landscapes, excellent hotel facilities, architectural landmarks, lush tropical vegetation, white sand beaches, green hills and turquoise waters.

In addition to the beautiful exotic, tourists are offered a well-developed infrastructure. You will easily find a hotel with the necessary services, including if you are traveling with small children

It is very important that animators work in the hotel, offer separate beds, shallow pools for kids. Some prefer to rent a bungalow and live directly on the beach, which is also very romantic

On the island you can also visit numerous zoos, nightlife, clubs, discos, national forest reserves. You will definitely not be bored and you will find those entertainments that are of interest to you.

Pattaya

Pattaya

Pattaya is best suited for active tourists who are not ready to sit still and are constantly looking for new entertainment. Local beaches (located directly in the center of the resort) are not suitable for a good rest. Since the water near the shore is dirty, you are unlikely to want to swim. However, if you move to the outskirts of Pattaya, you can find a couple of paradise places for a beach pastime. nine0005

  • Pattaya’s main advantage lies in its well-developed infrastructure. Here you will find many hotels of different levels of comfort. From super-luxury establishments to very budget ones. The second reason to visit Pattaya is shopping.
  • Many first-class shopping and entertainment centers have been built on the territory of the resort, where you can spend the whole day not only for adults, but also for children. Among other things, you can go on a tour of the botanical gardens, visit zoos, museums, water parks. The cultural program is very extensive and will not make you bored. nine0306

Weather in Thailand in September and October

In the photo: the weather in September – October is not conducive to relaxation. Rains almost everywhere in Thailand

The rainy season is in full swing: in Chiang Mai, Phuket and even in Pattaya rest is in doubt. A real rainy season. The rains can be long and last for several days, there are waves on the sea, there is often no electricity on the islands, floods are possible. Sea travel to most of the islands in the Andaman Sea is impossible – navigation is closed until November. It is strange that it is in October that the “Russian season” opens in Pattaya – probably because the prices here are low and tourists go despite the rains and bad weather. In October, there is only one region in Thailand where the weather is normal. And this is not Pattaya or Phuket …

Weather in Pattaya in March

Pattaya, an ideal holiday resort with chic hotels and cozy bungalows, great restaurants and a rich nightlife, exciting excursion programs and excellent beach holidays in March, will not disappoint its guests. The weather in Pattaya in March still resembles the “high season”, especially at the beginning of the month, although the total number of wet days is slightly more than in Phuket. The average air temperature during the day is 31 degrees, at night it drops quite a bit – up to 25 degrees. Local beaches delight with comfortable water temperature – 27 degrees. nine0005

The weather in Pattaya in March makes it possible to quickly get a beautiful even tan, and excellent conditions for water sports will make it easier to endure the rising heat.

Holidays in Phuket

Phuket Island is an ideal place in Thailand where tourists who are tired of the long winter in their native country can go. This Thai resort is located in an area with a lot of sun and heat, which have a positive effect on the body. Phuket is located in a tropical climate zone where the influence of the monsoons is felt. Despite the season, the island is constantly dominated by warm and hot weather. It remains the same in March, when there are a lot of sunny days, it rarely rains, and the air temperature is more comfortable than in other months. nine0005

It is almost impossible to get on cloudy days in March in Phuket. Therefore, before going to the beach or going on an excursion, sunscreen with a maximum SPF factor should be applied to the body. Humidity gradually increases, which negatively affects the overall perception of heat. Tourists note that when they go out into the street they get into hot air, and it seems that the temperature is +40 degrees. At this time, it is better to be near the water – on the beach or near the pool. The water in the sea warms up to +27 degrees Celsius. nine0005

A huge number of tourists come to Phuket in March, who are not deterred by humidity and stuffiness. In the daytime, the air temperature reaches +32, and at night it drops to +27. Rainfall in Phuket in March is about 121 mm.

Seasons in Thailand

There are three seasons in Thailand according to weather conditions. Depending on the region, the seasons vary, but in general the picture is something like this:

  • The holiday season is from November to the end of February
  • Hot season – from March to mid-May
  • Rainy season (low season) – from late May to October

During the high season, the weather in Thailand is most suitable for a beach holiday: not too hot, comfortable sea it rarely rains.

The hot season can be distinguished as part of the high season. At this time, it is still sunny and there are no waves on the sea, but the air temperature becomes too high. This heat is especially hard to bear in the north of Thailand, where the humidity is higher. nine0005

The rainy season in most of Thailand lasts from May-June to October-November. At the same time, the rest is spoiled not so much by rains as by constant cloudiness and strong waves at sea. Rains are usually short-lived and fall at night or in the evening, but can sometimes charge for several days.

At the same time, there are some advantages in the low season: prices for housing, flights and entertainment can be several times lower, and the beaches are not overcrowded with tourists.

Weather in Thailand in March

At a time when snow is just beginning to melt in our latitudes and the first spring rays of the sun appear, the weather in Thailand in March has long been clear and sunny. It is in March that this country can offer you a very hot climate, which our compatriots miss so much.

March in Thailand welcomes vacationers with sunny, clear and hot weather. The air temperature during the day is on average at around +33 degrees, at night – +26 degrees. If you are looking at the mountainous terrain of the country or prefer to relax in the north of Thailand, then be prepared for the fact that the nights here are much colder and the thermometer is unlikely to rise above +13 degrees after dark. nine0005

The air temperature in March has long been settled, and the southwest monsoon has not yet gained its full strength. Therefore, tourists who prefer dry air can relax at this time with great pleasure.

Holidays in some provinces in Thailand can be somewhat overshadowed by heavy smog, which occurs due to frequent fires in the jungle, as well as the annual tradition of farmers to burn dry grass before the onset of heavy rains. This situation reigns from Chiang Mai itself to Burma. nine0005

It is unlikely that you will be able to catch rain in March, as this month is considered dry and hot according to the local calendar. The maximum recorded number of rainy days in some areas does not exceed 4-5 days.

What to do in Thailand in March?

March does not differ much from other months in terms of the excursion program, as well as opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Tourists of the older generation, as well as elderly vacationers, prefer to go to the islands, where peaceful nature, beautiful landscapes and a lot of greenery around. Surfers also strive to get there, from morning to evening looking for a suitable wave for them. nine0005

Those who still prefer to get a lot of impressions from their vacation, as well as representatives of the youth part of vacationers, prefer Pattaya or Patong Beach: after all, here you can combine a daytime beach holiday and a variety of entertainment at night.

March is a great time to get acquainted with the life of the Thais, their national heritage, values and various ancient beauties, because the cost of excursions is not high, and finding the perfect tour option is not difficult. nine0005

However, you should be careful, because extreme heat and dry air can adversely affect your health. When choosing a trip, carefully review the route. It is best to opt for those tours where there are small stops along the way with the opportunity to dip, relax or just sit in the shade.

Lovers of flora and fauna are recommended to visit local national parks, botanical gardens, nature reserves, as well as excursion tours to plantations and farmers’ fields. So you can not only see the unique Asian nature, but discover those plants and animals that have long been protected as endangered species. nine0005

reserve

or participate in their care.

elephant farm

Another favorite entertainment is one-day walks and sea cruises to the islands of Thailand. Here, not only the beauty of coral reefs is breathtaking, but also numerous waterfalls, rocks, ancient temples, fishing villages and much more. nine0005

Nightlife and all kinds of entertainment await you in Pattaya, on the main beach of Phuket – Patong, as well as on Koh Phangan, which is rightfully considered a worthy successor to the famous party Ibiza. Every month on a scheduled day on Koh Phangan, the world-famous Full Moon Party begins, which all the party-goers of Europe, Australia, America and Asia aspire to attend.

There is a similar party, though on a smaller scale, on Koh Chang. It is because of its similarity to the one held on Koh Phangan that it received the name “Mini Full moon party”. nine0005

Thai massages and spa treatments are not to be missed. The cost of one session of body massage is approximately 200-300 baht (depending on the chosen technique and salon)

Massage in the country can be found almost anywhere: in a specialized salon, with masters on the streets, on the beach. The best massage parlors and masters are those located on Koh Samui and Phuket. A very interesting fact is that in the salons massage is done only by qualified doctors, often with the highest category in their profession. nine0005

March is perfect for holidays, and some resorts even set off-season. This suggests that you can not easily enjoy the accepted weather conditions, but also save money on the tour. Moreover, traveling under moderate climatic conditions, it becomes possible to see all the natural and architectural sights at a leisurely pace, in the absence of crowds.

For some, this is really important. We also recommend using the services of professional guides who know all the best routes and excursion programs

You will learn a lot of informative things from his mouth and remember it for a lifetime.
As we found out, the hottest weather awaits tourists on Koh Samui and in Bangkok. However, do not forget that Koh Samui has access to the sea, so you can quickly cool down, and in Bangkok you will have to endure the sweltering heat. Therefore, you should carefully approach the choice of a place of rest. nine0300 March is also the perfect month to travel to Phuket. There is no less beautiful nature here, a huge number of hotels have been built, there are entertainment centers for adults and children. If you’ve dreamed of being in a tropical setting, perhaps staying overnight in a bungalow, this resort would be the perfect choice.

I would also like to pay a little attention to insurance while traveling. You can not go on a long trip without buying the “services” of an international company

Any trip carries risks, and it is very expensive to use the help of local clinics, public hospitals will not help you. By paying a small amount, you can be sure of your future and, if necessary, visit a medical center. This is especially true when traveling with children, who often behave improvidently. nine0005

How to spend one day in Palma Mallorca

The capital of the Balearic Islands looks almost unreal when you first look at it in a magazine. And everything becomes more outlandish when you finally find yourself in front of its cathedral. Or stroll around at night on the promenade, inhaling the salty air of the Med. Some people arrive in Palma and never leave (like the famous English poet Robert Graves.) And once you visit, it’s easy to see why….

Autumn is the best time to see those warty, wrinkly looking fruits called Osage oranges, and this year, I have dozens of them growing at my farm.

Have you ever heard of an Osage orange? The Osage orange, Maclura pomifera, is actually not an orange at all, and is more commonly known as a hedge-apple, horse-apple, or mock-orange. Each one is about four to five inches in diameter and filled with a dense cluster of hundreds of smaller fruits – some say it even resembles the many lobes of a brain. For the most part, the Osage orange is considered inedible because of its texture and taste, but they’re very interesting and fun to grow.

Here are some photos, enjoy.

I have beautiful healthy Osage orange trees along three sides of my North Maple Paddock surrounding the run-in field and shed, not far from my tennis court. Here they are now as the leaves start to fall.

Before the leaves turn color, these trees are bold green. Properly maintained, these trees make a lovely natural hedge and fence and can grow up to 60 feet tall.

In winter, the trees must be pruned regularly to keep them in bounds. Without pruning, Osage orange trees grow in dense unruly thickets as multi-stemmed shrubs.

This is what they look like all pruned. We prune these Osage orange trees every couple of years.

Yesterday, the Osage orange trees were standing out in their autumn yellow. Before the invention of barbed wire in the 1800s, thousands of miles of hedge were constructed by planting young Osage Orange trees closely together. The goal was to grow them “horse high, bull strong and hog tight.” Farmers wanted them to be tall enough that a horse would not jump it, stout enough that a bull would not push it, and woven so tightly that a hog could not find its way through.

And they grow very fast for small deciduous trees – the shoots from a single year can grow up to three to six feet long. I planted many of the Osage trees at the farm about five years ago and they’re thriving.

The wood of the Osage orange tree is extremely hard and durable. On older trunks the bark is orange-brown and furrowed. The heavy, close-grained yellow-orange wood is very dense and is prized for tool handles, treenails, and fence posts.

The leaves are three to five inches long and about three-inches wide. They are thick, firm, dark green and pale green in spring and summer and then yellow in fall. There is also a line down the center of each leaf, with lines forming upside-down V-shapes extending from the center line to the edge of the leaf.

Here is a closer look at the yellow autumn leaves – so bright.

On this side of the paddock closest to my tennis court, the trees are in the process of turning. Osage oranges should be grown in full sun on well-drained soil. This tough, native plant can withstand almost anything when established – heat, cold, wind, drought, poor soil, ice storms, and rot.

Osage orange branches are armed with stout, straight spines growing from the leaf axils.

On this tree, one can see the many, many fruits on almost every branch. Osage Orange is actually a cousin to the mulberry tree.

Here’s a closer view of the fruits on the tree – this is the most prolific year ever for the Osage orange at my farm.

The Osage orange is dioecious meaning that there are both female and male trees; only female trees produce fruit. So far, we have one female tree laden with these warty looking fruits.

The name of the tree comes from the Osage tribe, which lived near the home range of the tree and could smell the orange-like aroma of the fruit after it was ripe.

The fruits are strong – they often persist on the tree after the leaves have fallen off.

Upon close inspection, the Osage orange is large, round, hard, and wrinkled or bumpy in texture.

Cut in half, the fruit exposes a pithy core surrounded by up to 200 small seeds that are much sought-after by squirrels. It is also filled with a sticky latex sap that some say repels insects.

By late fall, many fruits drop to the ground. Although these fruits are not edible to humans, they are not toxic to humans or other animals.

And looking past the Osage orange hedge into the pasture, one can see these handsome boys – Friesians Rinze, Bond, Hylke, Geert, and the Fell pony, Banchunch, grazing away. Do you have Osage orange trees where you live?

November 7, 2022

The landscape looks so mysterious shrouded in thick fog.

Do you get a lot of fog where you live? My Bedford, New York farm is in close proximity to a reservoir, where early patches of fog are quite common. Fog is essentially made up of condensed water droplets – a result of the air being cooled to the point where it can no longer hold all the water vapor it contains. It can be thin or thick – sometimes so thick it obscures the road and other objects ahead making it difficult for driving or even walking. One day last week, I woke up to a very dense fog, which covered the area for several hours.

It was a great opportunity to capture some photos of this atmospheric phenomenon, enjoy.

It’s hard to see where this road turns. This is the carriage road leading to my home – my tall stand of bald cypress trees is on the left and my long and winding pergola is on the right. In the distance, there are many trees still showing off their fall colors, but heavy fog blocks them all.

This is my allée of pin oaks. These tall majestic trees look bewildering in the fog. At the end is a carriage road intersection, but the thick fog makes it impossible to see.

On this foggy morning it was even difficult to see trees up close. These are two of my American beech trees, still holding tight to their leaves.

This view through the woodland is also very foggy – only the green and yellow foliage of the tree on the left stands out. Fog can form in two ways: either by cooling the air to its dew point or by evaporation and mixing – this happens often when the earth radiates heat at night or in the early morning.

Fog happens when it is very humid. There has to be a lot of water vapor in the air for fog to form. This is one of the most popular vantage points at the farm – the foot of the carriage road leading to the woodlands and my hayfields.

And don’t confuse fog and mist. Fog is denser than mist. This means fog contains more water molecules in the same amount of space. Fog cuts visibility down to six-tenths of a mile while mist can reduce visibility to about one to 1.2 miles.

In between the trees and the fenced-in paddocks, one can barely see the giant dark green white pines in the distance – but they’re there.

Even with the dense fog, my outdoor grounds crew keeps busy with all the autumn leaf blowing. It is hard to keep up with it – there are so many leaves to blow this time of year.

Some of the ginkgo trees have already lost their leaves but many tend to lose all their leaves at the same time. As the weather gets colder, the petioles get what’s called scars to protect the tree from disease after the leaves fall. After the hard frost sweeps down the east coast, this ginkgo, and others at the farm, will drop its leaves to the ground leaving a gorgeous carpet of color below.

This is the view through this grove of dawn redwoods, Metasequoia. These are so pretty in fall. They have feathery, fine-textured needles that are approximately a half-inch long. And look at its bark. The bark of the dawn redwood becomes deeply fissured as the tree matures.

This photo shows the thick fog just past the weeping branches of the willow.

Here’s more fog seen from the fence of my run-in horse paddock. The thicker the fog, the longer it takes to dissipate. This fog lasted until mid to late morning.

This view is in the back hayfield looking at the trees – one can barely see their outline.

At the upper edge of my back hayfield was a family of wild turkeys walking single file across the grass. They seemed un-phased by the foggy conditions.

At the far end of the back hayfield is my giant sycamore tree, the symbol of my farm. This tree is among the largest of the trees on the property.

This is a view looking down a section of my Linden Tree Allée – one of two at the farm. At the end is the carriage road to my home – hard to see, but it’s there.

Do you know what’s ahead in this photo? This image was taken from my Boxwood Allée looking toward my stable at the end.

This view is from my Boxwood Allée looking at my new living maze – look long enough and see the outline of the trees in the distance. Do you know… the foggiest place in the world is Grand Banks, off the island of Newfoundland, Canada? The cold Labrador current from the north and the warm Gulf Stream current from the east create just the right conditions for thick fog to form almost every day of the year.

Here’s a look across a pasture to another section of the Linden Tree Allée. This entire allée runs from the old corn crib all the way down to the vegetable garden.

The sun tried hard to shine through the clouds. All the fog was gone by afternoon, when the skies were blue and the temperatures hit nearly 74-degrees Fahrenheit. Today is also expected to be unseasonably warm, and then tomorrow, autumn weather returns with temperatures expected to drop to the 50s.

Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon continues to provide a great meal-kit delivery service that’s full of delicious recipes and helpful cooking tips.

Last week, we hosted a “Friendsgiving” event to highlight our Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon Thanksgiving menu sides and desserts. Lifestyle editors, influencers, and members of the press gathered in the test kitchen of our New York City headquarters to join us. I showed everyone how to make one of my favorite autumn cocktails – the apple cider bourbon sour. Guests also participated in a charcuterie board making activity using lots of delicious cured meats, crackers, fresh and dried fruits, nuts, and an assortment of cheeses from Murray’s on beautiful cutting boards by Khem Studios, one of our American Made Makers on Martha.com. We served sweet and savory bites from Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon, Martha’s Chard by 19Crimes and a variety of Fever Tree drinks. It was a wonderful time for all, and a great way to kick-off the busy holiday season.

Here are some photos.

At the entrance to the test kitchen was a stack of Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon boxes. Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon always delivers the ingredients and the recipes in well-marked, well-packaged boxes.

Around the center island, we displayed recipe cards featuring Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon Thanksgiving sides and desserts.

The middle work station was decorated with pumpkins and gourds and dressed with all the ingredients for our special charcuterie board making activity.

Trays were filled with specialty food items for the boards. A charcuterie board is an appetizer typically served on a wooden board or stone slab, either eaten straight from the board itself or portioned onto flatware. It features a selection of preserved foods, such as cured meats, cheeses and crackers.

There were also bowls of olives and cornichons, or tiny pickles. In some places they’re referred to as gherkins.

We provided an assortment of cheeses from the famous Murray’s artisanal cheese and specialty foods retailer and wholesaler in New York City. The cheese selections included Barn First Creamery Quinby, Stichelton, Murray’s Cave Aged Reserved Greensward, Gruyère, and Alpage Moléson.

The event was scheduled for 4pm – everyone arrived right on time.

A photo station was set up in one corner for those wanting to pose with fun hand signs. Here are Geanine (@geaninecilenti) and Brianne (@strollerinthecity).

And here’s Inga (@ingatylam) with a hand sign of me.

This group photo includes Alexa (@alexamjdotcom), Adeola (@theadeolacrown), Allison, Tiffany, Tasheena (@simplytasheena), and Morgan (@nomastehungry).

Here’s a nice snapshot of some of the Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon team – Kevin Chen, Sarah Crowder, Rachel Perlmutter, and Molly Krueger.

And here’s one of Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon’s Eliza Winograd, Theo Kaloudis, and Jennifer Aaronson.

Some of the hors d’oeuvres passed around included these Turkey Meatballs with Cranberry Glaze – one of the appetizers featured on the Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon menus for Thanksgiving – everyone loved them.

For beverages, we offered my 19Crimes Martha’s Chard and an assortment of Fever Tree drinks – club soda, ginger ale, sparkling lime & yuzu, and sparkling Sicilian lemonade.

In this area, Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon desserts, also available as part of the meal menu options for Thanksgiving. Among them, Pink Lady Apple Crisp with Oats & Warm Spices, Cranberry Buttermilk Chess Pie, Pecan Pie with Maple, Caramel & Brown Butter,
and Pumpkin French Toast Bake.

Everything was set up for my demo. I showed everyone how to make my apple cider bourbon sours. I filled a pitcher with eight-ounces of bourbon and 16-ounces of apple cider. Then I used a citrus juicer to squeeze the juice of one lemon. The serving glasses were pre-rimmed with brown sugar. After each cocktail was poured, it was garnished with a thin apple slice.

I also offered several tips during my demo, including this one – use a frozen ball of apple cider in place of ice, so the drink doesn’t get watered down as the ice melts. I keep the apple slices in a bowl of lemon juice nearby, so they don’t brown while the drinks are being prepared.

At each charcuterie board station was a beautiful cutting board from Khem Studios, an American Made maker featured on Martha.com. These are Walnut Mega Whale Bone Cutting Boards – handmade using locally sourced, kiln-dried hardwoods.

It was so nice to see everyone enjoying their projects. Making them, and then eating from them.

Here’s a photo of influencers Stephanie (@adventuresofchefanie), Jen (@indulgenteats), Jessica (@cheatdayeats), and Rachel (@thecarboholic).

And here I am with influencers Taylor (@taylorjphillips) and Jeff (@jeffodonnell). It was a fun time had by all. Please visit the Martha Stewart & Marley Spoon page and find out how you can get our delicious meal kits including our flavorful sides and desserts for Thanksgiving. It’s such a wonderful and easy way to ensure you and your family can enjoy tasty and nutritious meals now and for the holidays.

at the beginning, end of the month, reviews

The weather in the Crimea in March is fundamentally different from that to which the inhabitants of Siberia and central Russia are accustomed. Nature shakes off a short winter stupor, the air becomes warmer, and the sea no longer cools. The sun warms quite noticeably, but its rays are gentle and spare the awakening vegetation. Snowdrops begin to bloom in the mountains, followed by daffodils and hyacinths. Such beauty cannot be seen here in another time period. In general, weather conditions continue to be changeable, but the average daily temperature is +8 °C. Anomalies happen every few decades. The record values recorded during the observation period are +27. 8 °C and -7.3 °C.

Precipitation, especially on the coast, is surprisingly low. But in the mountains it is still frosty, the ski centers are crowded, the tourist season is reaching its peak. Although nature gives Crimea more heat this month than in autumn, it is cooler in spring, since most of it goes to warm the earth and the upper layers of water in the Azov and Black Seas. The temperature gap between different regions of the peninsula is shrinking, but still continues to be felt.

CONTENTS

  • What is the weather like in the center of Crimea?
  • March on the eastern shores of the peninsula
  • First month of spring on the west coast
  • What will please the forecasts and climate on the South Coast?

What is the weather like in the center of Crimea?

The coolest weather in the Crimea in March (reviews confirm this) in the central and northern regions. Its formation here is greatly influenced by air masses coming from the continent. They do not meet obstacles in the form of mountain ranges and calmly penetrate deep into the region. Cool northern winds are accompanied by rains, which bring discomfort. In the first month of spring, much more precipitation falls than in April. According to this indicator, it surpasses all others on the peninsula.

The average temperature during the day is about +8 °C, but sometimes the air warms up to +12 °C. At night, the thermometer drops to 0 °C. Small frosts are considered quite normal. However, the morning sun copes with them in just a few hours. Most of the precipitation falls as rain, which can be quite unpleasant when accompanied by strong winds. Snowfall is a rarity. As a rule, it melts before reaching the ground, and there is no question of establishing a snow cover.

March on the eastern shores of the peninsula

Finding out what the weather is like in Crimea in March, the east will also please you. On the coast of the Sea of Azov, which warms up more slowly than the Black Sea, spring is in no hurry to come into its own. Interestingly, in its northern part, the climate is more mild than in the southern. If the temperature of sea water in Kerch is one degree higher than in Dzhankoy, then the situation with air is reversed. During the day in the latter, it is generally twice as warm, and the usual Kerch night frosts, reaching -4 ° C, end here in February.

The number of clear days doubles compared to the end of winter, reaching ten. Sometimes in the last decade of the month the sun warms up the air even up to +16 °C. However, even with lower rates in calm weather, you can feel quite comfortable. The average amount of precipitation falling per month is only 26 mm, therefore, when going here for a vacation, you don’t need to take an umbrella. But this can also be said about a bathing suit – the temperature of the water in the sea at +6 ° C is not conducive to swimming.

The first month of spring on the west coast

On the west coast, the weather in the Crimea in March allows holidaymakers to feel quite comfortable. It is ideal for rehabilitation in one of the local sanatoriums. The average temperature during the day is within +9 °C, and at night it rarely drops below +5 °C. On calm and clear days, the thermometer often reaches up to +13 °C. It becomes cold only when squally winds begin to blow from the sea. The length of the day gradually increases and by the end of the month it is already 12.7 hours.

The best on the site: Where is the warmest in Crimea in March

In March, as in February, strong winds continue to blow, the average monthly speed of which is 7.5 m/s. They will begin to subside only in April. Sunny days alternate with cloudy ones, their number in March is about the same. But there is little rainfall. Together with November, the start of spring is considered the driest in Western Crimea. The sea here is rarely absolutely calm, but it almost never comes to real storms. Dense fogs, typical for February, are also observed less frequently. Sea water maintains a temperature of about +7. 5 °C.

What will please the forecasts and climate on the South Coast?

Although the breath of spring begins to be felt on the southern coast already from the first days of March, the air warms up gradually, literally by one degree. If in the first decade the thermometer in the daytime will be at +6 ° C, then the weather in Crimea at the end of March will please more, here the temperature rises to +12 ° C. Average nighttime figures will be +3 ° C at the beginning of the month, and slight frosts are quite possible. In the last decade, it will already reach +8 °C.

Not in a hurry to Yalta or Alushta and the sun. Cloudy weather at this time is not uncommon, and there are only about twelve clear days. According to experienced tourists, you should not be afraid of annoying rains. Precipitation in March is only 40 mm, which is one of the lowest figures for the year. The average wind speed reaches 5 m/s. However, there are both absolutely quiet and extremely windy days. The sea temperature near the coast is about +9 °C, which is not conducive to swimming.

Now you know what the weather is like in Crimea in March. In general, it is already quite comfortable to spend a vacation on the peninsula. The ski season is in full swing, museums and other attractions are available all year round, it is already warm around by average Russian standards. And, of course, the March prices for rest and treatment cannot but rejoice!

Tenerife: the island of records | Saturday

“Saturday” at the invitation of the Spanish Ministry of Tourism explored the island with the best climate in the world and got acquainted with its new tourist opportunities. We share useful addresses and tips.
Tenerife is called the island of eternal spring. It is believed that this place has the best climate in the world: the average air temperature is + 24-25o C, and the water is + 22o C. Due to the volcanic origin and the energy of the ocean, the island has a healing effect – it is not for nothing that astronauts and cosmonauts are sent here for rehabilitation. Tenerife is ideal for people of elegant age and those who want to put their heart and blood vessels in order. According to the NASA space agency, the climate of the Canary archipelago is the best on the planet. The Tenerife Tourist Department has even launched a special medical tourism program: various medical, health and rehabilitation courses (translation into any language is provided to clients).
The tourist season is here all year round. European pensioners and families with preschool children have chosen the island for “wintering” – they rent apartments for six months and spend the autumn-winter season here, when the Canary Islands become the only sunny and warm place in Europe.
Canary Islands is 115 km from Morocco. That is, geographically it is Africa. But at the same time, in fact – Europe, a piece of Spain, and one of the best and most colorful. The roads are beautiful, the towns are well-groomed, the service is excellent.
From the countries of mass tourism, you can swim in the sea in winter in the exotic Emirates, Egypt, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Seychelles, Mauritius, Brazil, Mexico and the Caribbean. In terms of cheapness, the Canaries are in third place after Egypt and Thailand. In favor of Tenerife are also the flight time (three to four hours from any Western European capital) and the imperceptible time difference with the mainland (no acclimatization). But most importantly, the Canaries are a safe, civilized Europe.
* * *
We got to Tenerife via Berlin. On the plane, we found ourselves next to a friend from Riga, who was traveling for a whole month with her third-grader son. When asked why not to Turkey or Greece, she answered that they were in Turkey – Greece, I want to combine a vacation for a child with a development and broadening of horizons program in the style of the Discovery Channel. Plus, there is no crazy Mediterranean heat here in the summer and vacations are cheaper at prices. Prices in Tenerife are much lower than in continental Spain, since the cost of living in the Canaries is lower than on the continent.

Family program

Indeed, Tenerife seems to be created for families. In addition to the standard beach set, you can create any vacation scenario here: from visiting the observatory and hiking to the crater of the volcano to watching whales and dolphins and exploring the ancient pyramids. There are relic forests and picturesque gorges, scorched volcanic landscapes and banana plantations, cute medieval towns and bustling American-style resorts. And such a variety of theme amusement parks is not, perhaps, anywhere else.
Loro Parque is the main hit of the island. This is a botanical garden, a nature reserve, a circus, an amusement park and an educational center under one roof. Rather, behind one fence of the zoo.
The world’s largest penguinarium, a unique orchid nursery, a colossal show of killer whales, dolphins and fur seals, a giant coral reef aquarium, a flamingo nursery and a huge collection of parrots: more than 600 rare breeds, many of which can only be seen here as they disappear forever from the wild. In a special performance, you can see how the parrots ride a bike, swing on a swing, read, count and perform other unimaginable tricks. The Loro Parque Aquarium, with a 20-meter glass tunnel where sharks swim above your head, is considered one of the best in the world.
Loro Park is always full of tourists – groups arrive at 12 o’clock. In order to see everything calmly and without hustle, you need to go to the opening, by 8.30.
The owner of Loro Park also owns one of the best hotels on the island, Hotel Botanico, where this year they launched a special children’s program Botanico Kinder Adventure: while parents enjoy the spa or relax by the pool in a tropical garden, children are taken to Loro Park under the supervision of teachers , where they are entertained by animators, they play with animals, go backstage, attend dolphin and fur seal training.
* * *
Jungle Park is less known but worth a visit. This is a real tropical jungle island. In addition, there are no crowds of tourists here, so you can even get lost in the tropical thickets among vines and waterfalls, where a giant pelican or a free-running flamingo will meet you.
The park is located 10 minutes from the resort area of Las Americas. You can get there on a free green panoramic bus that runs around the resort every half hour. Parrot shows start at 11.00 and 14.30. Performances of eagles and hawks – at 12.00 and 16.00.
The pride of the park is a white lion. Today there are only 27 such copies in the whole world. The funniest inhabitants are raccoons and meerkats. Animals are housed in spacious enclosures in conditions close to natural. You can ride a bob (bobsleigh) or walk along the rope obstacle course (Jungle Raid).
* * *
Siam Park is the best water park in Europe. Its creators visited fifty water parks around the world and took the most interesting ideas. Designers and engineers have made Siam Park large-scale and spectacular. Each attraction is special. The park is surrounded by tropical greenery. At the entrance you are greeted by fur seals living in their pavilion with a swimming pool. On the territory there are beaches with sun loungers, many restaurants. More suitable for teenagers. And with kids it is better to visit Aqualand.
* * *
Aqualand has lost popularity since the opening of the new Siam Park. But on the other hand, there are no queues for water rides – while in Siam Park you have to stand in line for slides for 40-50 minutes. In addition, Aqualand has a quality dolphin show (daily at 15.30). You can also get there by panoramic free bus.
* * *
On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays there is a jousting tournament with dinner and a flamenco show at Castillo San Miguel. On Thursdays there is a translation of the show into Russian.
* * *

The Piramides de Guimar Park is a complex discovered by the famous traveler Thor Heyerdahl. Here you can learn a lot of interesting things about the local ancient pyramids of Guimar and other famous pyramids in the world: from the Incas to the Egyptian ones. And also see various exhibits brought by Heyerdahl from travels, models of the boats on which he sailed, including the model of the legendary papyrus boat Ra II.
* * *
Camel Park near Los Cristianos offers camel rides and traditional Arabic cuisine.
* * *
The Jardin de Aclimatacion de La Orotava botanical garden in Puerto de la Cruz, founded in the 18th century by order of the Spanish king, has a unique collection of plants from all over the world, from Brazil to Madagascar. Jardin Botanico on the island of Tenerife is one of the oldest in the world.
* * *
The Pueblo Chico (“Little City”) miniature park is located here, in the La Orotava area. Here are copies of the most famous Canarian architectural structures and landscapes in 1:25 scale: the Teide volcano, the lunar landscape, buildings of the pre-Hispanic era of the Guanches, the ancient capital of La Laguna, endemic plants that grow nowhere else in the world.
* * *
Monkey Park (Monkey Park) – a mandatory item in the children’s program. Here you can freely enter the animal enclosure, feed them from your hands, pet them and take pictures. You need to come to the opening, while the monkeys are still hungry and not sleepy. At the entrance, you buy a box of vegetables and immediately find yourself in an enclosure with lemurs – they trustfully take food directly from their hands. And chimpanzees and green monkeys clap their hands for carrots. Children squeal with delight.
* * *
In the small Parque del Drago park of the town of Icod de los Vinos, there is the oldest dragon tree – a relic plant resembling a giant cactus. Among the Guanches, the ancient inhabitants of the Canaries, it was considered sacred. Dragon trees do not form annual rings, so it is impossible to determine their age. It is believed that the age of this tree is 2500-3000 years. If this is true, then this dracaena is the oldest living organism in the world.

There is also the Butterfly Museum (Mariposario del Drago) – the Garden of Eden, where exotic specimens from all over the world flutter in the wild, a laboratory for observing caterpillars and pupae, a cinema hall. Data source and citation

Raw data for the calculations made to find the sea surface temperature in Santa Cruz de Tenerife comes from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and their 1/4° daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature.

The water temperature data is constructed by combining observations from different platforms (satellites, ships, buoys, and Argo floats) on a regular global grid. A spatially complete sea surface temperature map is then built by interpolating to fill in gaps in the data.

Where better to relax in Tenerife in March. How does the island of Tenerife live in March and what awaits “spring” tourists there

    0

Do you know what people call the island of Tenerife? Island of Eternal Spring! This is because here all year round the weather is like spring: it is not cold, but there is no real heat either. All this is due to the location of the island and the Atlantic Ocean, which also has almost the same temperature all year round. So what’s the point of staying here? The answer is just as simple: it’s beautiful here, it’s great here, and here you can escape from the Russian cold. For example, the weather in Tenerife in March 2020 is much warmer than in southern Russia. And although the temperature of the water in the ocean is not suitable for swimming, you can sunbathe on the beach without any problems. And so, we will tell you about the farthest island of Spain, and what awaits tourists here in early spring.

As we have already mentioned, Tenerife is located in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The closest land neighbor is Africa, and this also leaves its mark on the climate. Thanks to this neighborhood, spring comes here earlier, and the air warms up faster. True, this does not affect the temperature of the water in the ocean, but even so, hundreds of thousands of tourists constantly rest here.

With the advent of March, the amount of precipitation in Tenerife is significantly reduced. For the whole month, 25 millimeters of rain can fall. At the same time, there are no completely rainy days or no more than one. In general, it can rain up to five times in March, and its duration is about three hours.
The rains are uneven on the island. For example, in the south it can be cloudy and rainy, and at the same time the north of the island will illuminate the sun and warm tourists. It is also often possible to observe showers and thunderstorms in the ocean, and there will be comfortable sunny weather on the shore.

Comfortable sunny weather on the island at the beginning of spring happens quite often. If you believe the statistics of weather and climate observations, then in March there are about 20 sunny days. On such days, the sun shines for more than 70% of the entire daylight hours and is only occasionally hidden behind the clouds. And the daylight hours have already become much longer, and if in the first days of March it was 11.6 hours, then by the end of the month it is already 12. 4 hours. This is great news for vacationers as they can spend more time relaxing on the beaches and spending more time under the sun.

The average air temperature during the day is about +17 degrees Celsius. On sunny days, the air can warm up to +23 and then absolutely all the tourists of the island rest on the beaches. Also, the temperature can be lower, usually it happens in cloudy weather, when the sun is hidden behind the clouds.

If during the day you can often walk in shorts and light T-shirts, then in the evenings and nights it is better to wear warmer clothes. At night, the air cools down and becomes no higher than +13 degrees. Plus, a breeze begins to blow from the ocean, which is not always warm and pleasant.

The first month of spring on the “Island of Eternal Spring” – do you think this does not happen? You are deeply mistaken. Come to Tenerife and see for yourself! Well, first of all, the Tour Calendar invites you to find out what makes this resort attractive in March, and how much tours can cost.

    Weather in Tenerife in March

While in March in Russia spring is only on the calendar, in Tenerife the onset of this month promises beautiful sunny weather. The mild subtropical climate and proximity to Africa provide the island with consistently warm and sunny days throughout the year. If you decide to go on vacation this month, your suitcase will not be overloaded with heavy things. During the day, summer clothes like shorts, T-shirts, skirts and sundresses are appropriate, and for the evening you will need trousers, a windbreaker or a thick sweater. This wardrobe is relevant not only in the southern resorts, but also during a trip to the north. Although in some cities in this part of the island the temperature is a couple of degrees lower. Excursion to Pico de Teide requires separate equipment. It is very cold there, and in March there is snow even at low altitudes. The ideal option would be a jacket and sturdy boots with durable soles, allowing you to make a difficult climb. Sunscreen and sunglasses are equally important items on the road. It only seems that the sun’s rays are very weak. Even in mountainous areas, the nose can burn. An umbrella is also an indispensable attribute. March weather is often described as unstable. Although, of course, everyone puts their own meaning in this concept. In fact, this means that in the northern regions about 6 days of precipitation are expected, and in the south – at least 4.

But they do not follow each other in a row and alternate with dry and partly cloudy ones. In addition, Tenerife repeatedly indulges its guests with a piercing blue clear sky. Now let’s briefly consider its temperature background. In principle, no special changes have occurred in it since February. Is that the nights have become a little warmer. During the day in the capital, which lies on the northeast coast, weather forecasters record an average of +22 ° C. The total duration of sunshine is somewhat lower than in the south. However, during the midday hours, the air tends to warm up much above this mark. Evenings are a little different. As you know, they are not comfortable enough even at the height of summer. This month, the thermometer steadily drops to +14 ° C. Puerto de la Cruz experiences lower numbers – +12..+19°C Apparently, its location in the lowlands affects. Humidity here is slightly elevated, often the sky is covered with a cloudy veil, so there are few people who want to walk on its volcanic sand. In the southern regions, the average value of the absolute maximums is approximately +22 °C, and with darkness the air cools down to +15 °C.

Despite the fact that Tenerife is adjacent to the Sahara, March is not very suitable for a classic beach holiday. The water is still cool, although some daredevils, it should be noted, take a dip. In any case, for children, bathing is fraught with colds. The first month of spring is more suitable for admiring pastoral landscapes, as during this period outlandish flowers bloom in the meadows and forests and various trees exude a sweet aroma. Renting a car will give you freedom of movement and save a lot of precious vacation time. Fortunately, car rental on the island is not expensive at all. Children will be delighted with amusement parks, while adults will remember interesting cultural programs and cozy evenings in restaurants.

    Beach holidays

If we consider the option of a beach holiday, then definitely in the southern resorts, where the weather is more pleasant. In early spring, the water temperature in the Atlantic Ocean continues to stay at the same level as in January and February – +19 ° C. According to the “experienced”, only a few enter the water. And even the euphoria that reigns during cruises to watch pilot whales and dolphins (by the way, highly recommended) cannot overcome the fear of their participants. Therefore, a stop for swimming comes out only nominal. But if it is cold for taking sea baths, then the weather is more than suitable for sunny ones. Although the daily maximums will seem unimpressive to someone for reclining on soft velvet sands. In fact, the sun is already palpably hot.

And sometimes the outdoor thermometer announces all +25..+26 °C. The only thing you need to choose the right beach for sunbathing. It is natural that it be leeward. Such places should be sought on the southwest coast. For example, in Los Cristianos, Las Americas or Costa Adeje. In the southeast, the ocean often storms due to the fact that the wind rose comes from the east, from the African continent. El Medano deserves special mention, a real mecca for surfers. Waves here disturb the water surface almost all year round. So this resort is exclusively sports-oriented. I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that at about three in the afternoon all the beaches begin to empty. Firstly, the sun is setting soon, and secondly, it is getting colder.

    Entertainment and excursions

To come to Tenerife and not visit the tourist attractions that are rumored all over Europe, even with complete indifference to any educational trips, is simply unrealistic. Your feet will carry you to some point of interest. In addition, the cost of organized tours is not so high. Perhaps the main advantage of the March excursion is the lack of tourist crowds. And this means that on the most “cult” routes, like Loro Parque, the Pueblo Chico themed miniature park or the Teide volcano, it will be relatively calm and free.

In addition to the places mentioned above, the Güimar Pyramids, mysterious stepped structures built by the ancient Guanches, are very popular. Their appearance and layout bear a strong resemblance to the pyramids of Giza in Egypt and those in the Lambayeque Valley in Peru. Relatively recently (in 1998), an ethnographic park was opened on their territory. Every day, a documentary about ancient civilizations is shown in the cinema hall. Those who went on vacation accompanied by the younger generation will not have to worry about what to do with their own children. In addition to Loro Park, which is in the northern part of the island, we recommend that you look into the Eagles Park in Costa Adeje. His calling card is a breathtaking open-air performance of raptors. Along with them, parrots and marabou demonstrate their skills. An excellent alternative to the ocean for children will be Aqualand, which is half empty in winter. The water temperature is maintained at +24 ° C, there are no queues for the slides – beauty and more! The water park offers not only rides, but also go to the dolphin show.

It is said to be much more spectacular than in Loro Parque. However, this water park is mainly geared towards ages 3-5. For teenagers and adults, there is a direct road to Siam Park, which is notable for its Thai-style design. A pleasant end to the evening can be a tasting of Canarian cuisine from freshly caught fish or rabbit meat. If you are in Las Americas, be sure to splurge on the Carmen Mota flamenco show at the Pyramid of Arona concert hall. Enjoy untold pleasure!

    Holidays and festivals

The main carnival celebrations in the capital died down already in February. But if you go south, you will still find the enchanting spirit of the carnival. In towns like Playa de la Arena, Puerto de Santiago and Los Gigantes, the fun begins right after it fades in the north.

As a rule, festive events take place here in the first week of March. After which the baton is taken over (next weekend) by Costa Adeje, Playa de las Americas and El Medano. If Easter falls on this month, consider yourself unspeakably lucky. For the islanders, it is of great importance. And of course, the celebrations are not complete without religious processions. Many cities organize theatrical performances and reenactments of biblical events. Lush parades mark the southern city of Aron and Puerto de la Cruz, in the north of the island.

Bright and magical dignity of the island of Tenerife – comfortable weather conditions all year round. Such pleasant weather throughout the year, as in the Canary Islands, cannot be found anywhere else in Europe. And maybe all over the world =)).

Different spring in the north and south

The island consists of 4 altitudinal zones, which are separated by a high ridge that holds back the clouds. What does it mean? In different places in Tenerife, the weather, temperature and precipitation are very different from each other. Sometimes 10 degrees! O_o

First you need to clearly understand that the temperature on the island is very different, it is always colder in the north. Therefore, if you want to relax in Tenerife in March, April or May, then choose the southern resorts. .

Tenerife is called the island of “eternal spring”, due to the fact that there are no pronounced seasons of heat, rains and other unpleasant periods. Tenerife differs from mainland Spain in its mild climate and warm winters.

To sum up, Tenerife is very nice in spring! Already in March you can sunbathe on the southern beaches, and in April and May you can swim. In the spring, temperatures even out, trees and flowers begin to bloom all over the island! This is a wonderful time for hiking and observing wild beauty.

Do not forget that the temperature in Tenerife in March, April and May depends more on the place on the island than on the month.

    Air temperature

The general weather pattern in Tenerife in March is unstable. This is due to the cold winds often blowing from the Atlantic. Nevertheless, the March weather has its positive aspects. Most of the entertainment in Tenerife in March is not connected with a beach holiday, or rather with its “bathing” component. But it is already possible to sunbathe, especially in the second half of the month, when the midday sun is already hot. But still, the prevailing holiday in Tenerife in early spring is associated with trips around the island, since, despite the relatively small size, there is something to see here.
First of all, we are talking about such natural attractions as the Teide volcano, the laurel forest in the Anaga park, the Maska gorge and the wonderful Botanical Garden.

If you went on vacation with children, then you should definitely visit the real “pearls” of Tenerife:

    • Loro Park with a magnificent penguinarium and a collection of parrots;
    • Monkey Park;
    • Siam Park;
    • Jungle Park.

Another interesting activity in March is the jousting tournament. This event takes place in the castle of San Miguet and gathers a large number of people who want to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The show runs on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, starts at 19-00. Entrance ticket for an adult will cost 48 euros, for children a 50% discount.

Trip in March – the cost of the tour in Tenerife

The cost of holidays in March is not as high as in the high season, which will start a few months later. If we talk about average figures, then for $ 2000 it will be possible to spend a very good week together. If you’re lucky, then by purchasing some kind of “burning” tour, you can reduce this figure. However, do not forget that you should carefully approach the choice of a travel agency – try to work only with trusted companies.
