The Bahamas are a dream destination for many, and rightfully so. With over 700 islands to choose from, there’s no shortage of activities and places to explore. But if you’re looking for a relaxing beach day where you don’t have to worry about the wind blowing sand in your face, then you’ll want to head to one of these 5 least windy beaches in the Bahamas.
Green Turtle Cay
Green Turtle Cay is one of the least windy beaches in the Bahamas. It’s a small island located in the northern part of the Bahamas. The average wind speed is only about 10 mph. This makes it a great place to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The water is crystal clear and there are plenty of activities to keep you busy, such as swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking.
Treasure Cay
Treasure Cay is a small island located in the Bahamas. It is known for its calm and clear waters, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving. The island also has a beautiful beach with white sand and turquoise waters.
Eleuthera
If you’re looking for a less windy beach in the Bahamas, head to Eleuthera. This island is located just southeast of Nassau and is known for its calm and clear waters. The beaches here are also some of the most beautiful in the Bahamas, with pink sand and turquoise waters. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy on Eleuthera, from snorkeling and diving to exploring the island’s many hidden coves.
Cat Island
Cat Island is one of the least windy beaches in the Bahamas. It is located in the central part of the country and is well-known for its clear turquoise waters. This beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling. There are also several restaurants and bars in the area, making it a great place to spend a day or two.
Exuma
The Exumas are a chain of islands in the Bahamas that offer some of the least windy beaches in the area. This makes them a popular destination for those looking to enjoy some sun and sand without feeling like they’re being blown away.
There are plenty of activities to enjoy on the Exumas as well, from snorkelling and swimming with the pigs, to exploring caves and hiking through lush tropical forests. And with so many islands to choose from, you’re sure to find a spot that’s perfect for you.
How to enjoy a beach day with little wind
If you’re looking for a beach day with little wind, the Bahamas is the perfect place to go. With its beautiful weather and turquoise waters, the Bahamas is a popular destination for beachgoers. However, the Bahamas can be quite windy, so it’s important to know where to go to avoid the wind.
One of the best ways to enjoy a beach day with little wind is to head to one of the many sheltered coves or beaches on the island. Many of these beaches are located on the leeward side of the island, which means they’re protected from the wind. You can find a list of some of the best sheltered beaches in the Bahamas here: [insert URL].
Another great way to enjoy a beach day with little wind is to head out early in the morning before the winds pick up. The early morning hours are typically much calmer than later in the day, so this is a great time to enjoy the beach. Just be sure to pack some sunscreen and water, as it can get quite hot during this time!
Finally, if you’re looking for a truly Wind-Free Beach Day experience, consider taking a catamaran cruise. These cruises typically depart from Nassau or Paradise Island and head out into sheltered waters where you can enjoy a full day of sun and fun without worrying about the wind.

9 absolute best things to do in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife
You might be familiar with the popular resort towns of Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas in the south of Tenerife, but Puerto de la Cruz might be a stranger to you. Situated in the north of the island, Puerto de la Cruz is a small town that boasts a charming Old Quarter which is abundant with historic buildings, sociable squares, unique shops, and bistros and bars. And despite becoming more popular in recent years, Puerto de la Cruz still manages to retain its fishing village vibe,…

Actual nearshore temperatures may vary by several degrees from the indicated values. This is noticeable after heavy rain or after prolonged periods of strong winds. Some downstream winds cause cold, deep waters to replace surface waters that have been warmed by the sun.
To develop a forecast, we use our own mathematical model, which takes into account the current change in water temperature, historical data and the main weather trends, wind strength and direction, air temperature in each specific region. We also take into account data for other resorts in Spain.

The temperature slowly builds in Mallorca during March, but the island still has a fresh feel. The Mediterranean sea remains cold and the weather fairly damp. The climate is warmer than the UK winter, and so March is an ideal month for those looking for deserted beaches and quiet resorts. We’ve looked at the most up-to-date weather data for Mallorca, covering the last 12 years up to 2023, plus we’ve asked our team of travel bloggers for their first-hand experiences in order to answer the most frequently asked questions about Mallorca weather in March.
What’s the temperature like in Mallorca during March?
The temperature reaches around 16℃ during the daytime in March, falling away to 10℃ at night. The UV index will be moderate at this time of year, so not something to worry about for the average person. However, if you’re going to be outside for long periods it’s worth wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen and UV-blocking sunglasses. Remember that bright surfaces, such as water and sand increase UV exposure.
Does it rain in Mallorca during March?
On average, there will be 3 rainy days during the month, amounting to 42.8mm in total. That’s broadly comparable with the amount of rain we see in England during the summer months, and would be considered dry. There’s a small chance that you’ll catch a thunderstorm during your trip.
Is it windy in Mallorca during March?
You’re unlikely to experience any strong winds. Expect a gentle breeze that increases to moderate at times during March. With moderate air temperatures, any breeze will feel cool.
Is it too cold to swim in the sea in Mallorca during March?
The water around Mallorca is a bracing 14℃ during March and would be considered too cold for swimming. Those who are a bit more hardy or frequently swim in cooler open water might want to take a quick dip. A wetsuit would be advisable if you wish to spend longer than 5 minutes in the water.

Kobe Goossens wins stormy Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana at Challenge Mallorca
Kobe Goossens made a decisive solo attack in the final two kilometres of Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana, taking his second stage in a row of the Challenge Mallorca on a day of severe weather conditions in the Tramuntana mountain range.
The Belgian rider delivered Intermarché-Circus-Wanty their third win in the race so far with his solo victory from the day’s successful breakaway, riding into an uphill finish in the town of Lloseta ahead of Lennert Van Eetvelt in second place and Ilan Van Wilder in third.
The day was marked by an early course alteration, caused by snow layered across the high mountains of the Tramuntana range, which resulted in a decision to shorten the stage from 155.5km to 123.2km, and restricted the course to remaining below an elevation of 500m.
Despite the alteration to the course, the weather still presented considerable adversity to the riders, with severe rain and hail throughout the day’s racing which rendered time gap information unavailable to riders and commentators.
Goossens was part of the day’s successful break. It followed an early split in the peloton with 80km remaining, which was brought back together with around 50km remaining. From there, a successful 8-man breakaway formed at 25km to go, containing Andrea Bagioli, Lilian Calmejane, Hugh Carthy, Kobe Goossens, Davide Martinelli, Brandon McNulty, Harry Sweeny, Lennert Van Eetvelt.
The 8-man breakaway was pursued by a four-man chasing group of Joao Almeida, Alessandro Tonelli, Ilan Van Wilder and Cian Uijtdebroeks, who caught the main break over the day’s hardest climb of Coll de sa Batalla, where Hugh Carthy made an aggressive attack to no avail.
The descent saw Uijtdebroeks and Eiking dropped as they descended cautiously on the drenched Mallorcan roads, before the remaining 10 riders rode into Lloseta.
Goossens made an opportune attack just as they approached the finish town, and some indecision among the chasers gave him a buffer of around 15 seconds – enough to hold off the chase all the way to the finish line, where Van Eetvelt beat Van Wilder in the sprint for second.
“I was super cold today,” said Van Eetvel after the finish. “Second after the third place yesterday, which is pretty amazing but kind of sucks as well.”
The win marked Goossens’s second in two days, and distinguished Intermarché-Circus-Wanty as the most successful team in the race series ahead of the final stage tomorrow.

Visiting Malta in March is a great idea for the simple fact that March is when the Maltese winter starts to come to an end, but it’s also right before the big boom of tourists hit. This means you’ll get the best of worlds: weather that is becoming warmer and historical sites and stunning locations that are not overcrowded by visitors.
Better yet, if you’re lucky enough to get some really warm and sunny days during your trip, you’ll be able to do a lot of outdoor activities that you wouldn’t necessarily risk doing in the colder months.
What’s the weather in Malta like in March
Malta in March can be quite beautiful some days. The days start to get much longer and sunnier, with an average of 7.3 hours of sunlight daily and temperatures start to rise with the average temperature ranging between 10-17o C (50-62o F). Even the sea starts to warm up with the average temperature going up to 15o C (58o F).
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the good weather is here to stay 100%. It is not uncommon for the weather in Malta in March to include days with rain showers, strong winds, and lower temperatures. The humidity will also make it all seem a little harsher as it’s at high levels all year round.
Is Malta warm in March?
Malta in Malta is usually always quite warm. Spring tends to start off mildly from around this time and gradually become warmer over the next few weeks. If you’re lucky, you might even get a particularly warm March, with bright sunshine and refreshing breezes.
Don’t expect it to be hot or scorching. That type of Maltese weather is reserved for later on in the year.
The weather in Malta in March tends to be somewhat more predictable than the previous months of the year. It doesn’t mean, however, that you won’t feel like you’re experiencing all the seasons in one day – very warm during the day and cool in the evening.
It’s common to get the sense that you’re experiencing multiple seasons in a day! What might start out as a relatively warm day can quickly turn into a colder, grey one which might even have strong winds blowing.
Is Malta sunny in March?
Yes, the sun is usually a welcome sight during the month of March. Blue skies and bright days are more common, with grey, rainy days being less frequent. Strong winds can still hit the islands, but they often die down quickly.
What to wear and what essentials to pack
Waterproof jackets and boots are not strictly speaking a necessity. However, it’s always a good idea to bring a coat and some shoes that can withstand possible wet weather
Given the fact that rains are not always expected to be extremely heavy during March, an umbrella would usually protect you well and so, it’s smart to have one
Sunglasses are a great idea for when the sun is shining very brightly. If you’re susceptible to easily getting sunburnt, pack up a hat and some sunscreen as well, even if it is of a lower strength
Layers are always a good idea around this time. Extremely thick clothing is usually unnecessary but you’ll be grateful for the possibility of being able to put on a cardigan or a light jacket when the evening comes and the temperature becomes colder
What is Malta like in March?
March is the month when life in Malta starts to flourish. Streets become busier, sites become fuller, and the social calendar starts to fill up with more and more outdoor events.
Even restaurants and bars will dare to put some chairs and tables outside if the weather is good and warm enough.
Malta is a sunny country, not just when it comes to the weather but also in character and you will most definitely see signs of this with the locals.
That being said, March in Malta is still not peak season and definitely not the busiest time of year. You will still be able to get around and visit places, museums, and historical sites without bumping shoulders with too many other tourists.
Apart from that, the weather in Malta in March can make for some of the best time for outdoor walks, hikes, and even strolls to the beaches (which are still relatively quiet at this time of year).
Malta Throughout the Year

With the sunnier, warmer days in March come the open-air celebrations that Malta is the perfect setting for. From local festas, to holidays, to other fun social events, there’s plenty going on in Malta in March.

Events on in Malta in March
St Patrick’s Day – In Malta, this is a huge event. You may not be visiting Ireland, but the Maltese take celebrating this holiday very seriously. Thousands gather in St Julian’s, by Spinola Bay, all ready to party in a sea of green out on the street, seemingly as at an impromptu street party! Music and beer start flowing as early as just before lunchtime and go well into the night. But beware – if crowds are not your thing avoid them at all costs. Roads will be blocked with traffic jams, parked cars, and food and drinks stalls.
Feast of St Joseph – For those looking to celebrate in more traditional ways. Officially a public holiday in Malta, this day falls on the 19th of March each year and schools and workers are given the day off. Traditionally, the biggest celebrations are held in Rabat. A perfect excuse to visit this beautiful location while experiencing a traditional Maltese festa, complete with a marching band, nougat and imqaret stalls, and colourful fireworks.
Freedom Day – Every 31st of March, Maltese people commemorate the faithful day in 1979 when the last British troops left the island and freedom from colonisation was achieved. This day is another national holiday given to schools and workplaces. Flowers are laid at the monument in Vittoriosa (in front of the marina) in memory of the event. While not strictly speaking an activity, it’s definitely an event that’s good to be aware of. You can even spend the day going around Vittoriosa after a quick visit to the monument!

Maltese beaches
The weather in Malta in March can be particularly stunning. If you’re lucky enough to get to experience lots of sunshine and warmth during your trip, I would definitely suggest going to one of the picturesque beaches around the island.
Remember though, the swimming season doesn’t start just yet, even though some brave people do go for a dip in March. But be careful – no lifeguards will be present on the beaches and the sea can still be a little bit rough at this time of year with underwater currents not unheard of.
However, being March, beaches won’t be crowded with sun-worshippers and swimmers and you can enjoy a quiet stroll or picnic along the coast. If you want some ideas on which beach to go to and why you can always have a scroll through my article for the Top 10 beaches.
Other things to do
Sunnier weather in Malta in March offers endless possibilities for how you can spend your time during your visit. There is so much to see, do, and even taste!
This includes:
Going on nature trails such as Xemxija Heritage trail, Selmun, the Marfa Ridge, Dingli, Żurrieq, or Girgenti, among others
Going on open-air bus tours (Hop On Hop Off)
Enjoying a meal al fresco (sitting outside) in places like the Vittoriosa marina or the Valletta Waterfront
Going on picnics at Buskett, Ta Qali’ National Park, or the family park in Marsascala
Sipping cocktails in the sunshine, such as at the Sliema or St Julian’s promenade
Visiting some of the national museums or historic sites, such as the Grandmaster’s Palace (State Rooms) and Palace Armoury and Casa Bernard among others.
Is March a good time to visit Malta?
March is one of the most wonderful months of the year to visit Malta. The weather is less likely to be cooking up a storm and if you’re looking for a getaway to a warmer country (without being roasted in the heat) then it’s the perfect time to visit.
Do keep in mind that there is never a guarantee it will be warm, sunny and lovely blue skies every day of your visit. However, the risk of facing cold, grey days is smaller in March.
Apart from that, visiting Malta in March means you achieve that happy medium of more sunlight hours during the day, less likelihood of bad weather, more activity and life around, and some fun occasions of being to spend time sitting outside without feeling too cold.
Where to stay
Visiting Malta in March means you’re coming over right before the peak influx of tourists and visitors starts. This means that you may still be able to get your hands on some end-of-winter-season deals and discounts, particularly from hotels.
If staying at hotels is not your style, or simply not your intention for this trip, you can always look towards other forms of accommodation, such as apartments, bed and breakfasts, and single room rental.
Where you stay also depends on what type of holiday you’re looking to have. If you want to be in the heart of it all, I would recommend staying somewhere like Sliema, St Julian’s, Msida, or Gżira.
As the capital city, Valletta could also be considered to be pretty central, especially when it comes to public bus transport. However, do note that the atmosphere and lifestyle is a complete type of busy than in the towns above. Stay here if you’re looking for easier transport around the island, quicker routes to museums, and a milder pace of life.
If, on the other hand, you’d rather be closer to nature and more rural areas, you can always look towards sleepy villages like Marsascala, Birżebbuġa, and Marsaxlokk in the south of the island, Mellieħa, Qawra, and Xemxija in the north, or Siġġiewi and Rabat in the centre.

Where does this data come from
Weather data for Puerto Del Carmen was collected from the MERRA-2 project from NASA, which used a climate model combined with historical data from weather stations around the world to estimate what the conditions were like for every point on the Earth.
For all data based on historical data, we’ve averaged the data from the past 11 years (2010-2020). For example, for the hourly temperature at 10am, we’ve looked at the temperature at 10am on every day in March (e.g., March 1, March 2, etc. in 2010, 2011, etc.) and took the arithmetic mean. We did not smooth the data, so for example, our daily temperature line will have some randomness due to the fact that weather is random in the first place.

What is the weather like in March in Mexico?
Due to the fact that Mexico has a large territory, the weather can vary in different parts of the country.
While it is dry and hot on the plains and the coast, the climate in the highlands is pleasant and refreshing.
Average air and water temperature
In March, real spring weather comes to Mexico . If even at the beginning the warming is not very noticeable, then by the end of the month, vacationers on the coast are met with rather hot weather conditions and high humidity. At the most popular seaside resorts of the country, the air temperature during the day rises to +27-31 degrees. At night, in the hottest regions of the country, it becomes quite fresh – up to +21 degrees.
On the way back from Mexico, most likely your luggage will be increased by one more bag with souvenirs and gifts. Read here what to bring from this country. nine0003
The most pleasant and hot weather is at the following resorts:
Acapulco ;
Merida ;
Puerto Escondido .
Water temperature on the coast of Mexico also pleases tourists, allowing you to enjoy swimming and excellent beach holidays in the spring. In the Pacific Ocean, the water warms up to a comfortable +28 degrees, in the Caribbean – +25 degrees.
Slightly cooler than in March on the west coast of Mexico – in this region the average air temperature during the day is +25 degrees, at night – +20°С. Sea water in resorts such as Mestalan does not exceed +21 degrees, which is completely unsuitable for swimming.
The coldest temperatures are observed in the north of Mexico. This part of the country is dominated by mountainous terrain , so the thermometer does not rise above +17 degrees during the day and +15 at night. nine0003
But this weather is ideal for exploring the sights of the country, which are quite numerous in this region.

Weather conditions
March in Mexico is considered one of the most stable months – the transition from winter to summer will not be noticeable. This is due to the fact that temperatures across the country will rise by only 3-4 degrees. The only difference from the previous month is the absence of showers and sudden short-term rains, which are typical for February. In March, precipitation is practically absent, and they are replaced by an abundance of warm and clear days. nine0003
Increased humidity is observed only on the coast of the country, but so far it is not so noticeable. Pleasant breezes and softening breezes in the resorts of the Pacific Ocean make the feel comfortable in such conditions. The onset of the warm season is most felt in Acapulco and Cancun.

Pros and cons
The weather in Mexico in March is ideal for a holiday in this country. If excursions are planned, then it is worth taking comfortable shoes with you , because this country has an incredible number of interesting places and attractions. To get acquainted with only a small part of them, you will have to spend almost the entire vacation. In addition, some are located in mountainous areas, where it is quite cool and damp, so a windbreaker and an umbrella may come in handy. nine0003

In Canary Island, the average high-temperature in March marginally drops from a hot 31°C (87.8°F) in February to a moderately hot 27.4°C (81.3°F). In Canary Island, in March, the average low-temperature is 16.1°C (61°F).
Heat index
The average heat index in March is evaluated at 28°C (82.4°F). Exhaustion is likely with prolonged exposure and activity. Sustaining activity may result in heat cramps. Take into consideration that the heat index values are calculated for shade and light wind conditions. With exposure to direct sunlight, the heat index may be increased by up to 15 Fahrenheit (8 Celsius) degrees. Note: The heat index, also known as ‘felt air temperature’, ‘feels like’, ‘real feel’, or ‘apparent temperature’, is what the temperature feels like to the human body when the air temperature is combined with the relative humidity. This effect is individual, with diverse people perceiving weather differently for numerous reasons (wind, differences in body mass, height, and shape, metabolic differences), and activity. Be aware that direct exposure to sunlight increases heat impact and may raise the heat index by up to 15 Fahrenheit (8 Celsius) degrees. Heat index values are especially crucial for babies and toddlers. Children are often less aware of the need to rest and re-hydrate. Thirst is a late sign of dehydration – it is vital to remain hydrated, particularly during prolonged physical activities.

Sunshine Hours
However, there’s also 6 hours of sunshine too. Temperatures generally settle between 9 °C and 20 °C.
Temperature
The daily average temperature for Seville during March is around 15 °C. Despite the chance of rain, the weather during the day is cool and fresh with the average humidity around 61%. It definitely feels comfortable during the day but pack a light jacket or mac just in case.
The weather can be unpredictable, so it’s best to pack an array of clothing and wear layers. The highest ever recorded temperature for March in Seville has been 32 °C with the lowest temperature recorded being an icy -2 °C, however these are highly unlikely at this time of year and you can generally expect the weather to remain within the averages for the month.

When is the best time to visit Spain
Spain is a country that lives and breathes the good life – from the timeless villages and cities to the Mediterranean coast. But, when is the best time to go?
Spain is as diverse as they come, and its culture is just as captivating as its landscapes. From some of the finest food and wine in the world, to fiestas (parties) and flamenco, Spain is famous for its passionate people, vibrant energy and extraordinary creativity. The seasons of Spain are distinct, too; due to its varied landscapes and sheer size, conditions can fluctuate around the country.
Spring is often touted as one of the best times to experience Spain. Not only is the weather sunny and warm between March and June, but it’s also fiesta season. Even the smallest, rural towns come to life with celebrations like Semana Santa (Spanish Easter), and Seville’s April Fair. Andalucia hosts many of the largest festivals and experiences idyllic conditions; both Seville and Granada average 22 degrees celsius in the middle of Spring. Valencia, on the south-eastern coast, is a few degrees cooler and enjoys its annual orange blossom during this time.
Madrid Weather
The capital Madrid averages around 18 degrees celsius in Spring, while Catalonian Barcelona hovers around 19 degrees – perfect for exploring the colourful streets and amazing architecture.
Summer is peak season in Spain. The beaches are at their most popular, and afternoon siestas (naps) can stretch for hours. But when the midday heat recedes, get ready to wine and dine your way through the balmy night. Attractions in many cities are crowded in summer, with visitors enjoying the Spanish sun, so pack plenty of water and sun protection.
Seville, in Spain’s interior, is one of the warmest places to be in summer. With an average temperature of 35 degrees celsius in July, mornings and evenings are the best times to explore. Granada is a little cooler, being in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and stays around 27 degrees during this time – beautiful for a day discovering the Alhambra. Further north, Madrid averages around 32 degrees and Barcelona 30 degrees, the latter assisted by its coastal location. Temperatures in Valencia are typically in the high twenties.
Boat excursion at a canal in Plaza de Espana
Come autumn, both the crowds and the temperatures start to simmer down. Spain’s grape harvest begins in autumn and in many regions, this is celebrated in true Spanish style – with a fiesta! In Seville, the Alcazar and picturesque Plaza de Espana are a pleasure to explore, with temperatures around 26 degrees celsius – and likewise in Granada.
Those visiting Madrid in the autumn should stop at Retiro Park, where the trees are awash with orange and red leaves. Pleasant temperatures in the late teens are perfect for picnics. Head to Barcelona to tour Gaudi’s architectural gems in comfortable 22-degree temperatures, or south to Valencia where the mercury drops to 24 degrees.
Spain’s stereotypes don’t generally include snow, but head to the southern Sierra Nevada and you’ll find plenty of it in winter. December to March is considered the off-season, so if you want to miss the crowds and you don’t mind packing a coat, winter is a great time to travel. Although temperatures dip, the Andalucia region gets plenty of sunshine at this time of year. Seville seems to barely know what ‘cold’ is, averaging 16 degrees celsius, while in Granada, people are still dining al fresco in 21 degrees.
Al fresco dining in the old town of Granada
Madrileños (people from Madrid) drink their sangria indoors in winter, as the capital averages around 10 degrees celsius. Barcelona is slightly warmer, at 13 degrees, while Valencia stays mild at 16 degrees.
Spain is truly a feast for all senses and most people who visit never want to leave.

The group stage of the World Cup ended in Qatar. Its most interesting results » Vecherniye Vedomosti
Four years ago the World Football Championship was held in Russia and with the participation of the Russian national team. Russia could not qualify directly for the championship in Qatar, having conceded the decisive goal 10 minutes before the end of the key match with Croatia, and football officials no longer made it possible to break through the “joints” of the Russian team, having disqualified for geopolitical reasons.
But the Russian national team has never been considered the leader of world football, and the World Cup is still the No. 1 sporting event of the year, which is why the attention of billions of people around the world, including Russia, is riveted to it.
The group stage ended tonight, which means that ¾ (48 out of 64) of the championship matches are behind us – we can already draw certain conclusions.
What happened for the first time
If you look at the organizational moments, many things at this championship are happening for the first time – starting with the fact that the championship itself has never been held in the Arab world or the Middle East before.
The smallest host country
Secondly, the championship has never been held in such a small country – and if in terms of population (about 2.9 million people now live in Qatar), Qatar is ahead of Uruguay of the 1930 model (1.85 million people ), then in terms of territory it has no equal among other organizers, since the area of \u200b\u200bQatar is only 11.5 thousand square kilometers (Switzerland, which hosted the World Cup in 1954, is closest in this regard – its area is 41 thousand square kilometers).
The most compact stadium layout
The small size of the country has made all eight stadiums so compact in a World Cup – between the furthest of them, El Janub in El Wakrah and El Bayt in El Howrah – a distance of only 70 kilometers (for comparison: the stadiums of the previous World Cup in Yekaterinburg and Kaliningrad were located at a distance of 2. 5 thousand kilometers from each other). And four of the eight stadiums are located in the capital, Doha. 7 out of 8 stadiums can be reached by metro, which was built in Doha and its suburbs specifically for the World Cup and opened in 2019year (unlike Yekaterinburg, which was only promised a subway, in Doha, 40 new metro stations were opened near Mundial). The proximity of the World Cup stadiums in Qatar prompted Russian sports journalist Timur Zhuravel to the ambitious task of attending all 64 matches of the tournament, which, according to him, no one had been able to do before.
The first football World Cup in winter
It is often heard that the World Cup takes place in winter for the first time in history. But this is not entirely true – after all, six times the world championships were held in the winter. But it was winter in the Southern Hemisphere. Therefore, it is more accurate to say that the championship is held for the first time during the period when winter is in the Northern Hemisphere. And also during the height of the football season in the European championships, and not after it ends. For this, a pause was made in all the leading European tournaments, but now few people will remember this – all attention is riveted on the Mundial.
Holding the championship in winter has led to the fact that in tropical Qatar the air temperature at the stadiums turned out to be even lower than in northern Russia – during matches it ranges from 23 to 28 degrees, while in 2018 in Russia there are many matches were played at temperatures over 30 degrees, including in Yekaterinburg.
The highest attendance in the XXI century
FIFA has not yet announced the average group stage attendance. However, it is already obvious that it is higher than 4.5 years ago in Russia. Thus, according to Metaratings.ru calculations, the average attendance of the first round of the 2022 World Cup was 50,187 spectators (the average stadium occupancy was 94.1%), so the value in the other two rounds, as practice shows, will be about the same. In 2018, FIFA reported an average group stage attendance of 45,394 spectators, the highest figure in the 21st century. True, both Russia and Qatar are far from the most visited World Cup in history – in 1994 in the United States, the average attendance was over 60 thousand fans per game.
First female chief referee
For the first time in the World Cup, a men’s team match was officiated by an all-female team of referees. Frenchwoman Stephanie Frappart, who worked at the match Germany – Costa Rica, went down in history as the first female chief referee at the main football tournament of mankind.
It so happened that it was in an Arab country that for the first time a woman refereed a football match. Photo: veved.ru reader
First goal – from the penalty spot
As for the sports component, many things in Qatar also happened for the first time. For the first time in history, the first goal in the World Cup was scored from a penalty spot. In the opening match, Ecuador striker Enner Valencia converted a 11-meter kick into the net against Qatar.
Master failure
For the first time in the history of the World Championships, the host country team did not win a single victory. Moreover, the Qatar team did not even score a single point, losing all the matches in the group. This is the second time in history that the hosts have not advanced from the group – the previous time was in South Africa in 2010, but then the South Africans defeated France (2:1) and drew with Mexico (1:1). The Qatar national team also set an anti-record for goals conceded by the host country in the group stage: 7 goals.
Longest match and latest goal
The match between England and Iran was historical in several aspects at once – at the moment it is the longest in the history of the World Cup (excluding play-off matches with extra halves) – 117 minutes 16 seconds (the previous record was set in the South Korea – Bolivia at the 1994 World Cup – 103 minutes 56 seconds). It is not surprising that the last goal in history was also scored in this match – Iran converted a penalty against England when the scoreboard was lit at 102:30. Officially, 24 minutes were added to the match between England and Iran by the chief referee Rafael Klaus. The reason was the long-term provision of medical assistance to the goalkeeper of the Iranian national team. But this case was not the only one – the championship in Qatar will be remembered for the fact that referees added 10-15 minutes to many matches. This is due to FIFA’s new approach to stoppage time calculation
There are no clear leaders
For the first time in the history of the World Championship final stages, in which 32 teams participate, none of the winners of eight groups could show 100% of the result and score 9 points. The last time all teams lost points was in 1994 when the World Cup was played among 24 teams.
At the same time, only three teams out of 32 – England, the Netherlands and Morocco – managed to score more than 6 points in the group. There were also no obvious outsiders – in addition to Qatar, only the Canadian team became the “supplier of points” in their group, all the teams in all other groups scored at least 1 point and kept their chances of reaching the playoffs until the last.
Ronaldo’s new record
Cristiano Ronaldo is the first player in history to score in five World Cups. The Portuguese surpassed Lionel Messi, Miroslav Klose, Pele and Uwe Seeler in this indicator – they scored in four world championships.
The end of the unique series of the Mexican national team
By the beginning of the previous World Cup in Russia, only three teams could boast of a stable entry into the playoffs at the World Championships – Brazil (11 consecutive times out of the group), Germany (16 times) and Mexico (7 once). In Russia, this streak was interrupted by the Germans – it was the Mexicans who left them behind, extending their streak to 8 successful exits from the groups.
But in Qatar, the series of Mexicans was also interrupted – they took only third place in the group, losing second in additional indicators to the Polish team. Thus, the streak continued only for the Brazilians – now they already have 13 exits from the groups in a row. However, another streak of the Brazilian national team in Qatar was still interrupted – 17 matches without defeat in the group stage. In their group, the pentakampeons defeated Serbia (2:0) and Switzerland (1:0), but lost to Cameroon (0:1), interrupting their successful streak.
Yeltsin’s first goal
In Russia, the name of this football player of the Costa Rica national team traditionally attracts a lot of attention, since Yeltsin Tejeda received it in honor of the first president of our country – his mother was so delighted with the activities of Boris Yeltsin. Tejeda has been playing for the national team of his country for more than ten years, but only in Qatar did he score the first goal in its composition, and the goal was not against anyone, but against the German national team. Germany, by the way, became one of the main disappointments of the group stage, having failed to advance from the group for the second time in a row. In addition to the Germans, the favorites were disappointed by the teams of Belgium, Denmark and Uruguay, which were also considered by the bookmakers as contenders for the playoffs.
Asia beats South America
For the first time in history, more teams from Asia than from South America made it through the group stage. South America has been a trendsetter in football from the very beginning, but gradually the results of teams from this continent began to decline, for 20 years South American teams have not been able to win the World Cup, and in Qatar it has already come to the point that there are more Asian teams in the playoffs than teams from South America: the AFC in the 1/8 finals is represented by three teams – Japan, South Korea and Australia (since 2006 this country has moved to the Asian Football Confederation), while CONMEBOL has only two: Brazil and Argentina. Previously, the Asian teams have never performed more successfully in the group stage than the South American ones (and up to 1994 years never even left the group).
The champion left the group
And the European teams, on the contrary, managed to overcome their curse. Since the World Cup finals are played in the current format (of 32 teams), the reigning champion, if he represents UEFA, has never been able to reach the playoffs – in 2002 France, in 2010 Italy, in 2014 Spain, and in 2014 Germany couldn’t make it past the group stage, with France and Germany finishing last in their group. But in Qatar, France managed to reverse this tradition and confidently advanced from the group after winning the first two matches.
True, the French lost the third match in the group and made “history” for the Tunisian team – the representatives of this African country for the first time celebrated the victory over the Europeans in the World Championships.
The end of the group stage did not become a reason to take breaks in the schedule – the first matches of the 1/8 finals will take place today: the Netherlands will play with the USA, and Argentina will meet with Australia.
Encompassing such a wide and unique area of the world, it can be hard to know what the best time to visit Europe is. Featuring widely varied geography, weather patterns and popular seasons to visit, each country differs so much, meaning that you simply can’t apply one set of travel advice to the entire continent.
Although dozens of different countries are located within Europe, we’ve decided to focus on some of the most popular destinations, from France and Italy through to Croatia and Russia. Check out when you should be visiting, when you should avoid travelling and some of the top events taking place in each country!
France
Best Time to Go
Allowing you to enjoy all that France has to offer without long queues or exorbitant flight and accommodation expenses, the country’s shoulder season is one of the best times to visit. Spanning from April to June and September to November, these travel periods often see lower temperatures compared to high summer (July and August), but make for a more enjoyable travel experience with fewer tourists and better rates across flights, hotels and more.
Major Events
Cannes Film Festival – May
Tour de France – July
Bastille Day – July
When to Avoid Visiting
Although high summer (July and August) provides France with its warmest weather, it also coincides with the country’s largest annual influx of tourists, especially in major centres such as Paris. As visitors flood into the country, locals often retreat to rural regions or neighbouring countries to enjoy their own fun in the sun, leaving some accommodation, restaurants and shops without staff at this busy time.

Italy
Best Time to Go
Much like France, it’s often best to travel to Italy outside of the peak summer season, which spans from July to August. Touring Italy in the shoulder season (from April to late June and from September to October) typically delivers more comfortable temperatures than summer’s peak, as well as better access to popular attractions in major cities such as Rome, Milan and Venice.
Major Events
Carnival of Venice – January or February (date determined by Easter celebrations)
Milan Fashion Week – February or March
Rome Film Festival – October
When to Avoid Visiting
The tourist high season (July and August) attracts large crowds to Italy’s cities and holiday hotspots, resulting in increased demand for accommodation and higher rates across flights and hotel rooms. Unless you are willing to shell out more for your holiday and don’t mind queuing for some of the country’s best known attractions, this time of year is best avoided. The low season, which begins in November and concludes in March, does see fewer tourists heading to Italy and lower costs compared to the high season, but attractions and hotels are often closed in areas along the coast and in mountain regions at this time.

Germany
Best Time to Go
Forget braving the crowds in summer, it’s easy to see the best of Germany from early to mid-autumn (September and October). At this time of year, the summer crowds have headed back home, attractions are far less packed and accommodation and airfare rates have dropped once again. The weather is generally pretty good at this time of year, but be prepared for some rainy spells.
Major Events
Berlin International Film Festival – February
Oktoberfest – September to October
Christmas Markets – December
When to Avoid Visiting
Summer (June, July and August) is typically Germany’s busiest tourist season and, while the weather is warm, it can also be rather unpredictable. It’s this time of year that often sees the most rainfall, which could certainly interrupt even the best made plans. Heading to Munich during Oktoberfest (September to early October) should also be avoided, unless you plan to take part in the festivities. Tourists flock to the city at this time and the cost of accommodation skyrockets.
Berlin, Germany.
United Kingdom
Best Time to Go
As with most European destinations, the best time to visit the United Kingdom falls outside of the summer peak, with the shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October offering the best opportunity to catch theatre, opera, ballet and other cultural events that don’t always take place during high summer. During this time, attractions are quieter, British Summer Time (the same concept as Australia’s daylight saving time) extends daylight well into the evening, and temperatures are fair.
Major Events
St Patrick’s Day – March
Chelsea Flower Show – May
Glastonbury – June
Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe – August
Hogmanay – January
When to Avoid Visiting
The United Kingdom’s hottest and busiest months, July and August, are best avoided for a better travel experience. At this time, major cities are filled with tourists, rates are high and temperatures may be uncomfortable. Similarly, winter should also be avoided as the days are short and cold, and many attractions are closed during this time.
Tower Bridge, London, England.
Spain
Best Time to Go
Accompanied by mild weather and fewer tourists, the best time to visit Spain falls within the shoulder season, which spans from March to May and September to October. The weather during these months makes it easy to get active, while most local attractions, businesses and events are in full operation throughout the season. Without the demand from holidaying visitors from nearby countries, hotel rooms and flights are generally cheaper at this time too.
Major Events
Fiesta de San Fermines (Running of the Bulls) – July
La Tomatina – August
San Sebastián International Film Festival – September
When to Avoid Visiting
From November to February, weather becomes less favourable across Spain, with increased rainfall and lower temperatures both commonplace. Accommodation in beach side areas is likely to be closed during this time, while the country’s ski resorts experience their peak season. Unless you are planning to hit the slopes, it may be best to see Spain at a different time of year. Similarly, mid-summer (June to August) is also best avoided unless you cannot change your travel plans. Temperatures are high during this time, large crowds are abundant and many locals head on their own holidays at this time, reducing both shopping and dining options.
Barcelona, Spain.
Greece
Best Time to Go
While the height of summer might appear to be the perfect time to visit Greece, spring to early summer (mid-April to mid-June) or autumn (September to mid-October) can actually be a better option. Avoiding high summer, you can expect to enjoy lower prices, good weather and smaller tourist crowds, making for a cheaper and more enjoyable trip to Greece and its islands.
Major Events
Athens Epidaurus Festival – June, July and August
Thessaloniki International Film Festival – November
When to Avoid Visiting
Beyond the shoulder and high seasons, there are generally fewer flights to Greece and some hotels and tourist operators may not be available during this time. Unless you take the time to carefully plan out all the details of your holiday and thoroughly research what will be available to you at this time, it may be better to reschedule your Greek holiday for another time. It’s also best to avoid travelling to Greece during high summer, as prices are heavily inflated and temperatures soar. This time of year is very popular with tourists, meaning that crowds and queues are sure to be in abundance.

Russia
Best Time to Go
With temperatures in some areas rivalling the Mediterranean and a lack of air conditioning in some hotels and public transport, the height of summer (July and August) might not be the most the most comfortable time to head to Russia. Instead, the shoulder seasons from May to June and September to October offer cooler weather and better conditions for discovering this vast and diverse country. September and October are close to the Russian winter, so if you are considering travelling at this time, it’s wise to pack a few extra layers.
Major Events
Victory Day – May
Stars of the White Nights Festival – May to July
Circle of Light Festival – September
When to Avoid Visiting
Blanketed with snow and gripped by freezing temperatures, Russia’s short winter days are best avoided unless you arrive well prepared. From November to February, the country sees much fewer hours of daylight and, unless you’re looking to go skiing or celebrate a Russian Christmas, it isn’t the most appealing destination at this time.
Red Square, Moscow, Russia.
Iceland
Best Time to Go
With more attractions and tours operating across the country, late May to early September is the best time to visit Iceland. As with most countries in the region, high summer (July and August) will see more tourists flock to Iceland’s shores, but the time either side of this busy period is also pleasant. If you don’t mind travelling during the European winter, it might also be worth considering visiting Iceland in February or March, where you can enjoy lower prices and more daylight hours than earlier winter months. However, be aware that some tours, attractions and transport routes may not operate at this time.
Major Events
Reykjavik Blues Festival – April
Reykjavik Arts Festival – May to June
Independence Day – June
When to Avoid Visiting
As a general rule of thumb, the period from late September to April isn’t the best time to visit Iceland as temperatures are very cold, daylight is limited to just 4 to 6 hours a day, and storms occur frequently. However, this time does coincide with the time at which the Northern Lights are at their most active. Their peak spans from September to October and March to April, and is an experience that should be ticked off every bucket list. If you are travelling on a budget, it is also best to avoid the height of the tourist season (from mid-June to August), which sees expenses increase.
Natural waterfall, Iceland.
Poland
Best Time to Go
Typically, the best time to holiday in Poland is during the summer months. The weather is warm at this time of year and most attractions are open to the public. Being the peak tourist period, prices may be higher for flights and accommodation, but the weather is normally more settled than early autumn and late spring. If you are thinking about travelling at this time, it’s best to know that some hotels and public transport may not have air conditioning.
Major Events
Jewish Culture Festival – June
Chopiniana – July
International Film Festival – October
Warsaw Christmas Market – December
When to Avoid Visiting
From November to March, Poland is often blanketed in snow and days are at their shortest. If you’re not planning to take part in skiing and other winter sports, or are wanting to experience Poland at its coldest, it may be best to reschedule your visit to another time of year where you can more freely, and comfortably, explore all that the country has to offer.
Krakow, Poland.
Sweden
Best Time to Go
The period spanning from May to September is generally thought to be the best time to visit Sweden. While the best weather can be found from June to August (high summer), the months either side of this time also offer plenty of opportunities to get active and soak up the sights of the country’s natural attractions at a lower cost than high summer. If you are planning to visit in September, be sure to pack appropriate clothing as temperatures tend to drop from this point onwards.
Major Events
Smaka På Stockholm – May or June
Medeltidsveckan – August
Malmö Festival – August
Stockholms Kulturfestival – August
Stockholm International Film Festival – November
When to Avoid Visiting
From November to March, the temperature drops across Sweden and the days get much shorter. Unless you are intending to take part in winter sports or attend a specific event, it is best to avoid visiting Sweden at this time. High summer (July and August) is also best avoided as accommodation and flights are more expensive and many major cultural attractions, such as opera, dance and ballet, shut down for the season.
Stockholm, Sweden.
Denmark
Best Time to Go
Much like most destinations across the continent, Denmark’s high season begins in June and concludes in August. Although the country does receive fewer visitors than some of its neighbours at this time, the cost of flights and accommodation do typically increase. If you’d rather not pay inflated rates, the best time to visit Denmark would be from May to mid-June or mid-August to September. At these times, the weather is generally mild, tourist crowds have reduced and the country looks beautiful as it enters either spring or autumn.
Major Events
Copenhagen Jazz Festival – February
Roskilde Festival – June to July
Århus Festival – August
Christmas Markets – December
When to Avoid Visiting
From October through to the end of April, temperatures drop and daylight hours are reduced across Denmark. Some seasonal events do take place closer to Christmas, but many attractions are closed during this period. If you are wanting to experience the natural beauty and culture of Denmark, it would be better to visit outside of winter and early spring. However, if you are looking to partake in snow sports and are wanting to enjoy an authentic Danish Christmas, this time of year may suit your travel plans.
Copenhagen, Denmark.
Croatia
Best Time to Go
Although July and August is the most popular time for tourists to head to Croatia, May, June and September offer warm weather without the crowds. Prices are lower at these times, and, while the beaches may not be quite as appealing as during high summer (July and August), the water is still warm enough for swimming. Some tourist facilities may not be available at these times and some transport routes limited, but the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of Croatia without overwhelming crowds is certainly worth the sacrifice.
Major Events
Split Summer Festival – July to August
Dubrovnik Summer Festival – August
Zagreb Film Festival – October
When to Avoid Visiting
If you’re thinking of heading to the Adriatic coast during your next Croatia trip, it’s best to avoid doing so during winter. At this time, most beaches are closed and most resorts are left abandoned throughout the chilly season. If you are still interested in visiting at this time of year, be sure to head inland and prepare to deal with some rather chilly temperatures.

7 destinations to travel in March in Europe
In addition to the favorable weather, March is low season in Europe’s main tourist cities. Take advantage of this chance to discover famous places, without having to face so many queues and with cheaper prices on hotels and tours.
Time to take a long trip, one of those with stops in several countries. And if you have time, go beyond the big cities, exploring attractions and locales inland.
If you want to go to the beach in March in Europe, the only viable destination is the archipelago of Tenerife, which is part of Spain, but is much closer to Morocco, in Africa.
1. Lisbon, Portugal
Average temperatures: 11ºC to 19ºC
Rainfall: 53mm
The pleasant climate combines with the long walks necessary to get to know the Portuguese capital. From Praça do Comércio to Bairro Alto, Lisbon is an open-air museum. The winds can still be icy, but it is now possible to take a sailboat ride on the Tagus River and enjoy the view of the beaches of Costa Caparica.
A trip to Lisbon is not complete without a trip to Belém , the birthplace of the great navigations, and another to Sintra, home to the most beautiful castles in Portugal.
2. Paris, France
Average temperatures: 5ºC to 12ºC
Rainfall: 47mm
All year round, there is no shortage of things to do in Paris, with its dozens of museums, art galleries, palaces and cafes. But on days without rain, the French capital shines much brighter. Take a good jacket and comfortable sneakers, because you will surely walk miles every day.
Paris is one of the most expensive cities in Europe. With the current exchange rate of the Euro, hotel prices are absurd for us. This is another advantage of traveling in March, the low season month, with lower hotel demand, which generates some good deals.
3. Barcelona, Spain
Average temperatures: 9ºC to 16ºC
Rainfall: 45mm
March usually has Champions League final round games
March is not yet beach time in Barcelona . With the icy waters and winds, take the opportunity to focus on the most important Historic Center in Catalonia. Places like the Gothic Quarter have a tourist spot on every corner. In addition to secular buildings, lively nightlife and the creative architecture of Gaudí.
The whole of Spain is an excellent destination in March. The tip is to travel by train. From Barcelona, there are high-speed trains to Zaragoza (1h33) and Madrid (2h55). Also worth visiting are Seville and Valencia.
4. Athens, Greece
Average temperatures: 7ºC to 16ºC
Rainfall: 49 mm
Take advantage of high humidity and less crowded tourist spots
You know that scene with huge queues, with thousands of tourists under a scorching sun strolling through the Parthenon? Not in March. In the last month of winter, temperatures are pleasant in Athens and the air humidity is still good. Concentrate on the historical side, as the Greek islands are not yet beached.
5. Amsterdam, Netherlands
Average temperatures: 3ºC to 9ºC
Rainfall: 58 mm
In March, the Keukenhof season opens
In the country of mills, the winds are almost always strong and icy. It’s no different in March in Amsterdam . Take the opportunity to pedal a lot and reach the main attractions of the city by bicycle: its parks and canals, beautiful and free places.
The season for the Keukenhof, Holland’s largest tulip field , usually starts around March 20, the official start of spring in Europe. The landscape continues to be colored by flowers until the beginning of May.
6. London, England
Average temperatures: 3ºC to 11ºC
Rainfall: 47mm
March is the least rainy month of the year in London
Who says it’s always raining in London , it’s because they’ve never been to the English capital in March. It is the driest month of the year. Great for outdoor walks, like taking a walk in Hyde Park or feeling like Julia Roberts (or Hugh Grant) in Nothing Hill, browsing its little shops on the charming slopes. And if the weather gets too cold, go to the corner pub and try a Fish and Chips.
7. Rome, Italy
Average temperatures: 6ºC to 16ºC
Rainfall: 53mm
Connected by cheap flights to Europe’s main capitals, Rome is a perfect destination in March. Stay a minimum of 4 nights to get to know at least the basics of the monumental Italian capital. From Vatican cathedrals to massive piazzas , explore Rome in the off-season and skip the long lines at sights like the Colosseum and Roman Forum.
Where NOT to travel in March in Europe
If you prefer to avoid very intense cold, it’s not enough to just run away from the Nordic countries, such as Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
Also avoid traveling to the main destinations in Central Europe, such as Berlin, Prague and Vienna. In this region, March begins with negative minimum temperatures.
In Eastern Europe, the cold also punishes the most important tourist cities, such as Krakow (Poland), Budapest (Hungary), and practically the entire European part of Russia.
★ When to go to Europe: travel time ★
Peak season
Half season
Off season
Roman Colosseum is busy during the peak season.
Wet weather shouldn’t get in the way of visiting Europe’s biggest cities, which are bustling all year round.
Some people have flexible enough jobs and lifestyles to choose when they go on vacation, but many others have less choice. Fortunately, Europe welcomes visitors 365 days a year – and each season offers a different atmosphere and experience. nine0012
In travel industry parlance, the year is divided into three seasons: peak season (roughly mid-June to August), field season (April to mid-June and September to October), and off-season (November to March). Each has its pros and cons. No matter when you go, if your goal is to “meet people”, you will find Europe filled with them at any time of the year.
Peak season
Summer is a great time to travel – except for the crowds and high temperatures. Sunny weather, long days and vibrant nightlife make Europe a powerful magnet. I haven’t missed peak season in 30 years. Families with school-age children are usually locked up during the peak season. Here are some tips to help you stay calm:
Organize your trip with crowd control in mind. Go to busy areas as early as possible or at the end of the season. For example, consider a six-week trip to Europe starting June 1, half with a rail pass to see the famous sights of Italy and Austria, and half visiting relatives in Scotland. It would be wise to do the train pass section first, enjoying fewer people, and then spend time with family during the last half of your holiday when Florence and Salzburg are swarming with tourists. Salzburg on June 10 and Salzburg on July 10 are two completely different events. nine0012
Spend the night. Popular day trip destinations near major cities and resorts such as Toledo (near Madrid), San Marino (near the huge Italian beach resorts) and San Gimignano (near Florence) take on a more peaceful and pleasant atmosphere at night, when legions of day trips retreat to the predictable plumbing of their big city hotels or beach. Small towns usually lack hotels large enough for tour groups and are often out of reach for large buses. So, at worst, they experience crowds at noon. Also, popular cruise ship destinations like Venice and Dubrovnik are hellishly packed during the day – but more tolerable at night when the cruise crowds are sailing away. nine0012
Get ready for the intense heat. Europeans swear it’s getting hotter every year. Even colder climate restaurants (such as Munich or Amsterdam) currently tend to have enough outdoor space to take advantage of an even longer outdoor season. Across Europe, high temperatures – even sweltering – are expected in July and August, especially in the south.
Don’t discount July and August. nine0026 While crowds in Europe can usually be built on a bell-shaped curve that peaks in July and August, there are exceptions. For example, Paris is relatively empty in July and August, but full in June and September for conferences and trade shows. Business class hotels in Scandinavia are the cheapest in the summer when business travel is not running there.
In much of Europe (particularly in Italy and France), cities are partially closed in July and August, when local city dwellers relax on the beach. You’ll hear that these are terrible times for travel, but it’s actually not terrible. You can’t get a dentist and many laundromats can be closed, but Europe’s massive holidays don’t affect tourists. Just don’t get caught on the wrong road in the first or fifteenth month (when holidays often start or end causing huge traffic jams), or try to compete with all of Europe for a piece of French Riviera beach in August. nine0012
Some places are best experienced during peak season. Travel in high season in Scandinavia, the UK and Ireland, where you want the best weather and longest days, where horrendous crowds of other places are rare and attractions are sleepy or even closed during shoulder season. Scandinavia has an extremely short tourist season – mostly from mid-June to the end of August; I would avoid it behind this window.
Half Season
The “shoulder season” – typically April to mid-June and September to October – combines the benefits of both peak and off-season travel. During the holiday season, you will enjoy good weather, long enough daylight, fewer people, and a local tourism industry still ready to delight and entertain. nine0012
Shoulder season depends on destination. As autumn and spring bring cooler temperatures to Mediterranean Europe, the holiday season in much of Italy, southern France, Spain, Croatia and Greece can actually reach peak overflows and prices. For example, with the exception of beach resorts, the peak season in Italy is May, June, September and October, not July and August. As mentioned earlier, Paris is surprisingly quiet in July and August.
Spring or autumn? nine0026 If you’re discussing the merits of traveling before or after summer, think about your destination. Both the weather and the crowd are about the same in spring or autumn. Mediterranean Europe tends to be green in spring and dry in autumn. For hikers, the Alps are best in early autumn because many good hiking trails are still covered in snow until the end of spring.
Please note that round-trip airfare is based on your date of departure. So if you’re flying during peak season and returning late in the fall (forearm), you can still pay for your roundtrip airfare during peak season. nine0012
Off-season
Every summer, Europe encounters oppressive tourists. Before jumping into a pile of pigs during the peak season, consider traveling during the off-season – usually from November to March.
Expect to pay less (most of the time). Off-season prices are often hundreds of dollars cheaper. With fewer crowds in Europe, you may find that you can sleep less: many great hotels are dropping their prices and there will be plenty of vacancies in budget hotels. And while some small or rural living spaces may be closed, those that are still open are usually empty and therefore more comfortable. The opposite is true for business centers in big cities (especially in Berlin, Brussels and the capitals of Scandinavia), which are busiest with corporate travelers and most expensive during the off-season. nine0012
Enjoy Europe for yourself. During the off-season, loitering carelessly around the home of Leonardo da Vinci, contemplating the Roman Forum alone, kicking the sand on lonely Adriatic beaches, and conversing with laid-back guards around fires in French castles. In Venice in winter, you can be at the top of St. Mark’s Campanile, watching the clouds of your breath roll over the church’s Byzantine domes towards the crystal Alps skyline. Down in Piazza San Marco, pigeons squirm and wonder, “Where are the tourists?” nine0012
During the off-season, adventurers enjoy enhanced service in shops and tourist offices, and get to know European Europe. Although many popular tourist parks, shows and tours will be closed, the off-season is the high season for high culture: in Vienna, for example, the boys’ choir, the opera and the Lipizzaner stallions delight the public in all their places. glory.
Be ready for any weather. Since most of Europe is in Canadian latitudes, winter days are short. By 5pm it’s dark. The weather can be terrible – cold, windy and drizzling – and then get worse. nine0012
Packing for cold and wet clothes – waterproof jacket, gloves, wool hat, long jeans, waterproof shoes and umbrella. Dress warmly. Cold weather is colder when you’re outside trying to have fun all day, and cheap hotels can be chilly and drafty during the off-season. But just as summers can be wet and gray, winters can be crisp and blue, and even in mid-November, the mountainsides sparkle with colorful leaves.
Beware of short hours. nine0026 Get the most out of your limited light hours. Some attractions close completely during the off-season, while most operate shorter hours, with sunset often determining the closing time. Winter excursions are great in big cities that are bustling all year round, but they’re more disappointing in smaller tourist towns that can be boringly quiet with lots of sights and closed restaurants. In December, most beach resorts shut up as tightly as canned hams. While the beautiful European outdoor evening vibe persists all year in the south, the winter streets are empty in the north after dark. English-language tours, common in the summer, are less common during the off-season when most visitors are indigenous. Tourist information offices are usually open all year round, but they have less time in winter. nine0012
