dreamy beaches and much more

What to see in Los Cristianos? This is the question that lots of tourists ask themselves once they’ve booked their accommodation in this town in the south of the island of Tenerife. Although the area has been advertised as a ‘sun-and-beach destination’ for a long time, Los Cristianos offers a wide variety of leisure options, in addition to culture, gastronomy and the attractions of the seaside.

However, we wouldn’t want to play down neither the beauty of the beaches in the area (probably the most popular ones on the island) nor the omnipresence of the ocean. They are, unquestionably, Los Cristianos’ biggest draw, as it’s on the seashore that you’ll find some of the best things to see (and enjoy) in this tourist spot.

There are all kinds of other options on top of that, both in the town itself and in the rest of the municipality of Arona, which Los Cristianos belongs to.

Playa de los Cristianos beach, golden sand in Tenerife

Without doubt, one of the sights you can’t miss in Los Cristianos is its beach. This was one of the first places in Tenerife to attract tourism, back in the 1960s. Despite the spread of urban development, thanks to which Los Cristianos can host a growing number of people who come here to enjoy the area’s privileged climate, the town still maintains its seafaring spirit.

The beach itself is a 345-metre-long, 80-metre-wide stretch of golden sand. It’s equipped with all the facilities you could need: showers, sunbeds and parasols, bins and access for visitors with disabilities, amongst other things.

The seaside promenade which runs along the edge of the sand is lined with numerous shops, outdoor terraces and restaurants. Said restaurants are a great opportunity to enjoy the best of Tenerife’s traditional cuisine.

Playa de las Américas beach

Las Américas is, without doubt, one of the most buzzing beaches in the area of Los Cristianos. This cove is surrounded by a tourist complex of the same name and is one of the spots in Tenerife that draws a younger crowd and has a thriving night scene.

Playa de las Américas

The focus is the stretch known as Las Verónicas, which is lined with bars and nightclubs, in which the fun goes on until dawn, or even later.

But it’s not just nightlife that people go to Playa de las Américas for. There’s also an outstanding 18-hole golf course here (Golf Las Américas), located right in the heart of the tourism and leisure complex.

What’s more, in the port in the area of Playa de las Américas you can embark on all kinds of excursions to try your hand at water sports.

Playa del Camisón beach

The Playa del Camisón is one of the best beaches in Los Cristianos, especially if you’re travelling as a family. Thanks to the conditions here (it is protected from the waves by two breakwaters) it’s an unbeatable spot for your children to be able to swim safely.

This beach of fine golden sand, which is 350 metres long and 40 metres wide, boasts extremely clear waters. Next to the beach there are plenty of bars and restaurants where you can treat yourself to a cool drink and a bite to eat after a good sunbathing session.

In the evenings, Playa del Camisón beach has a very cosmopolitan vibe, but it’s a lot more chilled that the nearby Playa de las Américas.

The Arona pyramid

Not far from here you’ll find the Arona pyramid. This is definitely something worth seeing in the Los Cristianos area. It’s a show hall that’s been running for more than 20 years, with the Carmen Mota dance company performing.

This well-known choreographer has brought glimpses of some of the most acclaimed Spanish dance routines to this space during her 40-year career. The show is put on at night and is called Antología [Anthology]. It is, without a doubt, one of the best things to see in Los Cristianos.

Los Cristianos port

The town’s port is the point of departure to enjoy some of the best activities that you can do in Los Cristianos. More specifically, the channel that separates the island of Tenerife from La Gomera is one of the main whale and dolphin watching hubs in Spain, where you can spot dolphins and pilot whales.

On top of that, on board any of the vessels belonging to the companies that organise boat trips from the Los Cristianos port, you can behold some of the most spectacular views of the Teide volcano.

The port at Los Cristianos is also where most of the companies that organise excursions to Los Gigantes leave from. This is, without doubt, one of Tenerife’s most eye-catching geological formations, resulting from contact between volcanic lava and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

From Los Cristianos port you can also catch the ferries and fast boats that connect this part of Tenerife with the nearby islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Monkey Park Zoo

The Monkey Park zoo specialises in caring for primates and other small animals, and is a fantastic activity to enjoy in Los Cristianos, especially if you’re on holiday with children. What makes it unique is that you can enter many of the enclosures where the animals live, and even feed them.

The stars of the show here are the lemurs, marmosets and chimpanzees, but there’s also a terrarium with snakes, alongside lots of birds, such as macaws, cockatoos and toucans, and even crocodiles and tortoises.

12 Best Beaches You Should Try in Tenerife

Tenerife is mostly known as a place for an exotic vacation focused on beaches. On our trip to Tenerife, we discovered a completely different face of the island that we didn’t know exists. Yes, there is more to the island than meets the surface, but let’s now dive into the beaches.

There are beaches all over the island, however, the north has black sand beaches, while the south has more gold-sand beaches. Since the south has a warmer climate, it is the ideal place if you are mostly interested in beaches. You should also keep in mind that the south is more touristy and most cities are in fact resort cities. During the pandemic, these resort cities looked almost abandoned. Sad for the businesses and creepy for the wanderers.

We personally found black sand beaches more interesting because of the contrasting colors. However, as they are located in the north, you should consider that not all afternoons are sunny in this part of the island. We also enjoy blending in with the local culture and habits that you get in the north. Since we get bored from lying on a beach all day every day, we don’t mind the occasional clouds.

El Bollullo

Unspoiled black sand beach. Don’t forget your towel or surf board!

Plan your visit to this beach so that you are sure to fully enjoy the sun. Being surrounded by cliffs, in the late afternoon, part of the beach might be in the shade. You can either watch where you are lying your towel or go earlier when the sun is up.

The beach is mostly formed of sand, with very few rocks here and there that you can easily see and avoid. Surfers seem to like this place, we never seen this beach without surfers, especially in the afternoons.

El Bollullo Beach

There is parking close to the beach, but the road to it is narrow and it might be a hustle to get to your destination if you encounter cars coming the other way. At peak hours the parking might also be full so you risk being forced to head back. We recommend you leave your car somewhere in El Rincon before the narrow road and walk to the beach.

Playa de Martiánez

Black sand and pebbles beach in Puerto de la Cruz.

Like most beaches in the north of Tenerife, it has black sand and also pebbles. Entering or getting out of the water may be a bit of a challenge due to the rocks at the shore.

If you’re looking for a sand-only or mostly black sand beach, there is another beach in Puerto de la Cruz called Playa Jardín.

Playa Jardín is larger than both Playa de Martiánez and El Bollullo, but it is not an unspoiled beach like the latter.

Playa de Martiánez

Playa de Los Cristianos

One of the most known beaches and also most popular in Tenerife. To us it seemed a lot like any other beach you would go to in a touristy place. It didn’t have anything unique. However it’s sad is very nice which makes it perfect for beach sports like voley.

Playa de Los Cristianos

Playa de Las Vistas

Just next to Playa de Los Cristianos sits Playa de Las Vistas. It is also the beach of a resort city, populated mainly by tourists, but with awesome sand.

Playa de Las Vistas

Playa de la Enramada

No beach photos for this one, our attention was drown by the huge number of people paragliding here. Playa de la Enramada is the base beach for paragliders.

Playa de la Enramada

Playa de Las Teresitas

Man-made beach close to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Probably the only beach in the north of the island that is not black.

Playa de Las Teresitas

Playa de Roque Bermejo

What a better way to cool down after a hike under the sun?

This beach was like a surprise for us. We simply went on the Roque Bermejo Hike and didn’t know what to expect. In other words, there’s no easy way to get to this beach other than a hike or perhaps a boat if you are more adventurous.

The beach itself is not spectacular, it is a small strip of sand, not very wide and it can’t accommodate too many people. We believe that not too many people arrive here anyway.

The beauty of Playa de Roque Bermejo is due to its location. It is just perfect for taking a break from hiking and enjoying the greatness of the ocean on a beach that, if you’re lucky, is all for yourself.

Playa de Roque Bermejo

Playa de Almaciga and Playa de Benijo

Sometimes it rains and sometimes you’re there for the hike. Enjoy every moment as it is!

Playa de Almaciga and Playa de Benijo

Playa de Leocadio Machado

We stumbled upon this beach by accident after hiking La Montaña Roja (soon to be covered on this blog). It starts very unusually with some greed stony ground, but this is one of the largest natural beaches in Tenerife and it is a sandy one. Right next to it lays Playa del Médano famous for surfing.

Playa de Leocadio Machado

Playa de la Tejita

Tenerife’s longest natural beach.

Separated from Playa de Leocadio Machado by Montaña Roja, Playa de la Tejita is a fine sand beach. This beach spans more than 1 kilometer, and it is even longer than its neighboring beach.

Playa de la Tejita is almost always windy which makes it a great place for surfers, but can be off-putting for people who just want to sunbathe.

Playa de la Tejita

Playa de Los Gigantes

Black sand beach guarded by giant cliffs.

Playa de Los Gigantes

Playa Punta de Teno

This beach is a bit more complicated to reach. The easiest way to get there is by bus and the hardest way is to hike to it like we did. We have covered more details about how to get to Punta de Teno in other articles on this blog.

Playa Punta de Teno

It takes a lot of planning for the perfect trip, but packing can sometimes be frustrating. Either packing too many things or packing too few can both ruin a bit of the fun. We’ve perfected our packing checklist over years and we believe it will be of good use for you too. We also have some travel packing tips & tricks to share to save you the hustle we once had.

Top 10 Beaches in Tenerife

Destination guides

March 09, 2018

The largest island of Spain’s Canaries chain, located in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the coast of Morocco, Tenerife showcases year-round sunshine, exotic natural scenery and some of the most spectacular stretches of sand that you’re likely to come across outside of the Caribbean or the South Pacific.

Here are 10 of the top beaches in Tenerife. Each one highlights its own unique style and appeal, offering something to attract almost everyone – from the chilled out sun worshippers to the active sporty types. Best of all, all of these beaches are within easy driving distance of CLC World’s Tenerife resorts.

Playa de la Tejita

One of the largest natural beaches on the island, Playa de la Tejita is situated near to the laid-back kite-surfing haven of El Médano on the east coast. Less than half-an-hour’s drive from CLC World’s Tenerife resorts, this windswept sandy beach curves directly into a stunning landmark – Red Mountain or Montaña Roja, which juts straight up from the aquamarine sea.

A favourite with nature lovers and naturists alike, this golden-sand beach is virtually deserted during the week and remains largely undiscovered by most tourists. With its relatively shallow waters and charming cove, Playa de la Tejita will enchant those who are looking to escape entirely from civilisation.

Playa de las Teresitas

Set along the north eastern shore of the isle, within close proximity to its capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, this picture-postcard beach is only about an hour’s drive from the Tenerife resorts of CLC World. It would be hard to find a more beautiful beach than man-made Playa de las Teresitas with its two-kilometre sweep of silky Saharan golden sand fanned by waving palm fronds and lapped by turquoise waters.

Despite its renowned prettiness and easy access to a wide selection of restaurants serving up fresh fish, bocadillas and tapas, this beach is usually remarkably uncrowded. Overlooked by the dramatic Anaga Mountains, this idyllic spot is a magnet for those in search of the quintessential beach.

Playa del Duque

A white-sand beach lined with elegant striped huts and thatched straw parasols, and presided over by a quaint colonial-style restaurant on stilts, Playa del Duque serves as a mecca for those beachgoers who crave the high life and adore being in the very centre of it all.

Located on the western tip of Costa Adeje, within a 10-minute drive from CLC World’s Tenerife resorts, this beach not only promises sun-soaked hours of swimming and people watching on the satiny sands, it also sits near to chic boutiques and delicious restaurants.

Playa El Bollullo

Gorgeous, black-sand El Bollullo imparts an authentic taste of the true Tenerife. Nestled below cliffs that are tucked behind banana plantations, just to the east of Puerto de la Cruz, this beach redefines the concept of “secluded”. Yet, it’s still only about an hour-and-a-quarter’s driving time from the splendid resorts of CLC World in Tenerife.

While it undoubtedly calls out to those adventurous spirits who want nothing more than to explore untamed nature, this beach also beckons gentler souls. You won’t find any hotels or shops backing onto Playa El Bollullo, but the beachfront café will do the trick. Not to mention, the views are simply unforgettable.

Playa Jardin

This black-sand beach in the northern city of Puerto de la Cruz offers a cornucopia of delights, with elements sure to please just about everyone. Playa Jardin’s most outstanding feature is its magnificent tropical gardens, including a man-made waterfall, which were designed by famed Spanish artist and architect César Manrique, as part of his innovative plan to create a magical coastline for the island.

With the majestic and often snow-clad peak of active volcano Mount Teide looming in the distance, and the vibrant profusion of plants and flowers that creep almost up to its black sands, Playa Jardin or “Garden Beach” will surely not disappoint those who have always dreamt of relaxing in a breathtaking tropical paradise.

Playa Las Vistas

A mere 10-minute jaunt by car from CLC World’s Tenerife resorts, Playa de las Vistas in Los Cristianos offers a spacious 850-metre expanse of pristine golden sand. Sporting a blue flag, this well-manicured beach is perfect for families because of its safe swimming conditions and easy access.

Beachgoers of all ages will take delight in splashing about in the refreshing blue-green sea. And afterwards, head over to the promenade where there are plenty of ice cream kiosks, restaurants and shops to keep you busy and make certain that everyone is happy and well-fed.

Playa de los Gigantes

Towered over by cliffs that soar up to 800 metres high, the black-sand beach of Playa de los Gigantes or “Giants Beach” can be found on the west of the island. Imagine working on your tan as you gaze out at a placid bay, bordered by steep stone mountainsides that slope precipitously down into the sea.

Although a popular spot, the sheer natural loveliness of Playa de los Gigantes, which is only half an hour away from the Tenerife resorts of CLC World, will have you feeling like you’ve happened upon your very own castaway haven.

Fañabé Beach

Only an 8-minute drive from CLC World’s Tenerife resorts, Fañabé Beach lures those who thrive on constant activity and enjoy spending hours taking part in a wide variety of water sports.

From jet-skiing and parasailing to banana boating and paddle boarding, this sandy beach has you covered. Plus, for those less inclined to heart-racing pursuits, glass bottom boat rides are available to show you a colourful glimpse of the undersea universe just off the shores of Tenerife.

Playa del Médano

Adjoining Playa de la Tejita and displaying its own glorious views of the burgundy-hued Montaña Roja or Red Mountain, Playa del Médano is the largest beach in Tenerife. In addition to its seemingly vast spread of light golden sand and its windswept coves, this beach exudes a wild vibe that can’t help but pique the interest of nature fans.

With its windy conditions and wide-open bay, Playa del Médano is well-known as the ideal spot for surfing, kite-boarding and windsurfing on Tenerife. Yet, it’s also a great beach to simply sunbathe and feast your eyes on seascapes that will take your breath away.

Playa del Camisón

Gently curving, golden-sand Playa del Camisón lies on a headland between Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, only about 10 minutes away from the Tenerife resorts of CLC World. This gem-like beach – which is close to all the action of the main southern towns, yet set apart on its own mini peninsula – delivers a wide array of choices to suit most tastes.

Whether your idea of heaven consists of lazing under the Spanish sunshine all day long, swimming in clear aqua-coloured seas or sampling the local flavour at a beachfront bar or restaurant, you’re likely to fall in love with Playa del Camisón.

Los Cristianos Tenerife | Beaches, Marina and Restaurants

The harbor by the resort town of Los Cristianos is a busy place. Ferries leave from this South Tenerife port to go to the islands of La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Marina and Los Cristianos viewed from port

Our ship, the Harmony V, moored at Puerto de Los Cristianos during our cruise in the Canary Islands. From the dock, we had a panoramic view of the marina filled with yachts and fishing boats.

Behind the marina, buildings (many of them rental apartments and hotels) clustered around Montaña Chayofita. The resort area is clean and safe, with flower and palm-lined walkways joining one beach area to the next.

Playa de Los Cristianos

The closest beach to the port and marina is Playa de Los Cristianos. It’s a short but wide stretch of sand that is popular with families.

Like Pied Pipers, two buskers attracted a throng of children by making giant bubbles on the walkway encircling the beach. The kids gleefully jumped up-and-down to burst the floating iridescent globules.

Playa de las Vistas

On the opposite side of the marina, Playa de las Vistas has a very different personality. You can rent a lounge chair or a blue beach umbrella on the very long beach and enjoy a massage in a tent.

The beach is wheelchair accessible. A sign at the entrance warned: “No camping. No dogs. No loud music.”

Information about whales and dolphins by Playa de las Vistas

Whale-watching

An information sign overlooking Las Vistas beach from the walkway described the short-finned pilot whales and dolphins that live in the protected coastal waters.

Translated into Spanish, English, German and Braille, it explained that these marine mammals hunt for food with their eyes closed, using sonar. A map showed the best places for viewing the whales and dolphins.

Pedestrian walkway

Paseo de Vistas, a tiled pedestrian walkway, follows the beach. The Tourist Information Office here gave us a free map and brochures about Los Cristianos attractions, restaurants and places to stay.

Judging by the languages that we heard, the pedestrians came from around the world. Parents pushing baby strollers, dog-walkers, hand-holding couples, seniors, people on motorized wheelchairs, cyclists and rollerbladers all enjoyed the balmy South Tenerife weather.

Beach volleyball

Palms, dragon trees, hibiscus blossoms and cacti lined Paseo de Vistas. From park benches, we viewed beach volleyball and elaborate sandcastles.

Opposite the beach, numerous cafés and shops sell liquors, beachwear, massages and manicures. Red tiled-roof stucco buildings house the Vista Sur Shopping Center.

Playa del Camisón

The tiled walkway changes to the paved Andrade Fumero pedestrian street at Playa del Camisón. This crescent beach is not as wide as Playa de las Vistas.

Sunbathers relaxed on lounge chairs under thatched palapa umbrellas. Some were topless.

Just past the Parque Santiago Shopping Center, we discovered a black lava beach with seagulls. A massive steel sculpture of cacti dwarfed strollers.

Playa de las Américas

Paseo Francisco Andrade Fumero leads to Playa de las Américas. This holiday resort area is known for its hotels, watersports and nightlife.

At Playa El Conquistador, we watched surfers riding the waves. Bars along the beach enticed nighttime crowds with music, flamenco dancing and mojitos-to-go.

Where to eat

Los Cristianos restaurants span the spectrum from pizzerias to seafood restaurants serving fresh fish. Fast food places range from McDonald’s and Burger King to ice cream stands. Many offer outdoor seating areas.

Don’t worry about having to speak Spanish. Billboards show photos of restaurant menus and food specialties, from tapas to paella and sangria for two. Restaurant servers speak numerous languages.

Estación Marítima

On the way back to Los Cristianos port, we stopped to walk along the breakwater housing the Maritime Station.

A colorful undersea mural painted with fish, sea urchins and a coral reef decorated the breakwater. The walkway on top offered great views of the marina and Los Cristianos.

Black Sand Beaches in Tenerife (+ 20 of the Best Beaches in Tenerife)

Temperatures have dropped here in London.  I don’t mind the cold if I am wrapped up warm.  These old English houses though are pretty to look at but completely draughty.  I have the heating cranked up but am still feeling cold. The whole experience has me dreaming of our holiday on the black sand beaches in Tenerife. Here is our pick of 20 of the best beaches in Tenerife, a Spanish island blessed with great weather for an easy escape for winter sun. With many black sand beaches, Tenerife is great for a family holiday. Of course, there are white sand beaches in Tenerife too (with sugar soft golden sand imported from the Sahara!).

Why The Beaches of Tenerife?

A couple of years ago, before the children started taking skiing seriously, we went to Tenerife during February half-term break.  The average high temperature in Tenerife is in the low 70’s which is pretty good for a quick break from England for winter sun in Europe.  Not only is the flight time only 4 hours from London but also there are plenty of family-friendly things to do in Tenerife, like Tenerife black sand beaches.

Wow! Tenerife is blessed with mild winters and warm summers with an average annual temperature in the 70’s.  And, Tenerife has lots of sunny days averaging about 3000 hours of sunlight per year! Do you need any more convincing to get yourself to a Tenerife black sand beach?

What Color is the Sand in Tenerife?

The original Tenerife sand is black and so you get the Tenerife black sand beaches. The other type of Tenerife sand is golden sand from the Sahara imported for people who don’t like the black sand beaches Tenerife originally had.

Why Are There Black Sand Beaches in Tenerife?

The black sand beaches in Tenerife are the result of a volcanic basaltic coastline meeting the erosion of the sea.  The island has a coastline of 250 miles of which 40 miles are sand beaches in Tenerife.  Chances are you will find a Tenerife black sand beach that you will love. In terms of Tenerife beaches, black sand is the original version.

Most of Tenerife’s golden sand beaches are man-made.  They were created by importing soft yellow sand from the Sahara.  The yellow sand beaches are in the more touristy areas on the south of the island.

In fact, the famous Playa del Duque started off as a black sand beach but got covered up by golden sand in the 1990’s. Maybe you can convince your kids to keep digging until they get to the original Tenerife beach black sand ? That should keep them busy.

Due to their colour, black sand beaches also retain the heat better – a big plus in the winter months!

Why Kids Love A Black Sand Beach in Tenerife

I find black sand is a bit stickier and less grainy than yellow sand.  My children absolutely loved the black beaches Tenerife had to offer though  They filled up the Tenerife black sand holes with water and pretended they were Peppa Pig jumping in muddy puddles.  The children looked a fright once they were finished playing in the black beach Tenerife style.

On the plus side though, all the black sand Tenerife has washes off and it was definitely easier to spot black sand caught in little crevices than golden sand on a little sun-kissed body.

Also, black sand in Tenerife is heavier than yellow sand and brushes off easier when it is dry!

Our favourite black sand beaches in Tenerife were Playa de las Arenas (on the West coast) and Playa Jardin (on the North Coast).

Your Perfect Black Sand Beach Tenerife

Your choice of black beaches Tenerife offers really depends on if you have kids with you.  An isolated black sand beach in Tenerife will give you that Robinson Crusoe feeling that you may not find on the rest of this touristy island. On the other hand, you may not want to lug food, drinks, toys etc, to some of the best beaches in Tenerife

The best black sand beaches Tenerife offers for kids

      • Playa Jardin in Puerta de la Cruz is a Blue Flag black beach Tenerife locals love. This beach is sheltered and great for kids. It has lots of facilities as well as a mix of locals and tourists.
      • Playa de las Arenas is another black sand beach in the south of Tenerife located near Los Gigantes. It is a Blue Flag Beach and the kids will love exploring the rock pools.
      • Playa de Troya is on the Costa Adeje on the South coast.  This black sand beach in Tenerife is in the Las Americas tourist section of the island. Although Las Americas is known as party central in Tenerife, during the day Playa de Troya is a family-friendly Blue Flag beach.
      • Playa San Juan is in the South of Tenerife in Guia de Isora, a small fishing village. The beach is small and sheltered and so good for kids. This Blue Flag beach is less touristy than other beaches because the area has more apartments than hotels.
      • Playa San Marcos is located on the North Coast. It backs onto a little fishing village and is sheltered enough for kids to play safely.
      • Playa de la Martianez is located on the North Coast near Puerto de la Cruz. Although a small black sand beach in Tenerife, your kids will LOVE the Lago Martianez which is a waterpark that combines pools and art. Yes, really.
      • Also on the north coast near Icod de los Vinos, Playa San Marco is a popular black sand beach Tenerife visitors love. It’s family-friendly with calm waters and sun loungers for rent.

A dramatic setting for this black sand beach – Tenerife’s soaring cliffs, blue sky and turquoise waters.

Other black sand beaches in Tenerife

If you want the novelty of a black beach Tenerife has got lots of great options. Not every Tenerife black sand beach though may be suitable for families. For example, on some of these black sand beaches Tenerife permits nudist sun bathing.

      • Playa de los Gigantes is a small beach on the West Coast.
      • At Playa Bollullo in La Orotava, you will find your escape from the crowds. However, there are no facilities and the waves are strong so it’s not great with little kids. Nearby there is a nudist beach in Tenerife.
      • Playa Las Gaviotas (near the golden sand beach of Las Teresitas) is also a nudist beach in Tenerife.
      • Continuing with the nudist beach in Tenerife theme, Los Patos is an enormously popular black sand beach located in the Orotava valley in Tenerife. At low tide, the beach is very wide. It’s not easy to access but has a spectacular setting amongst banana plantations, cliffs and the sea.
      • Playa Socorro has attained Blue Flag status. One of the top beaches in Tenerife, it is popular with surfers. The waves may be too much with younger children.
      • Roque Bermejo in Eastern Tenerife is not the easiest to visit. You will need either a boat or trek for two hours. Personally, I think that is way too much effort in getting to a Tenerife black beach.

Top Beaches in Tenerife

These top beaches in Tenerife are the ones which have been awarded a Blue Flag rating for their cleanliness, convenience, amenities and ease of access, including for people with disabilities.  These sandy beaches in Tenerife are a mix of golden sand and black sand. A Blue Flag rating pretty much means these beaches have been certified to be the best beaches in Tenerife.

5 Blue Flag White Sand Beaches in Tenerife

We didn’t limit ourselves to just black beaches in Tenerife! In terms of beaches Tenerife is blessed so it’s a perfect place to explore different sandy options.

My daughter loves white sand beaches in Tenerife as well.

These white sand beaches in Tenerife are all in the south of the island:

  • Playa Fanabe in Costa Adeje is one of the best beaches in Tenerife for families. Facilities include showers, bars, restaurants, lifeguard service, police, sun lounger rental and water sports equipment for hire.
  • Playa del Duque is also in the Costa Adeje and another one of the top beaches in Tenerife. Facilities include showers, bars, restaurants, lifeguard service, police, sun lounger rental and water sports equipment for hire.
  • Playa las Vistas is near the bigger beaches of Los Cristianos and Las Americas on the south coast. The beach is fairly sheltered and the gentle water is perfect for younger children. Facilities include showers, bars, restaurants, lifeguard service, police, sun lounger rental and water sports equipment for hire.
  • Playa del Medano is located on the south coast near Granadilla de Abona. Facilities include car parks, restaurants, lifeguard service, sun lounger rental and water sports equipment for hire. Playa del Medano is one of the beaches Tenerife offers for sports enthusiasts, and even hosts the World Kite Surfing Championships every year.
  • Playa la Jaquita is also located on the south coast near Granadilla de Abona. Facilities include a car park,  sun lounger rental and water sports equipment for hire. This beach is one of the less touristy of the beaches in Tenerife.

You have a choice of sandy beaches in Tenerife, whether black or golden

7 Blue Flag Black Sand Beaches in Tenerife

Some of the blue flag black sand beaches in Tenerife have been mentioned above for being particularly family-friendly (Playa de Troya, Playa de las Arenas, Playa San Juan and Playa Jardin) or unique for some other reason (El Socorro).

Here are two other choices in the North of Tenerife  if you are still looking for the perfect black beach Tenerife has to offer:

  • Playa San Telmo is located in Puerto de la Cruz. During low tide, the rock pools are great for children to play in. On the less family-friendly side, there’s not car parking nearby so you will have to haul your stuff to the beach.
  •  Playa la Arena is located in Tacoronte. Small with calm waters, it’s one of the black beaches Tenerife locals love.

Los Cristianos beach (Playa de los Cristianos)

Los Cristianos beach (Playa de Los Cristianos) you will find in the city of the same name, located in the south of Tenerife and which is a popular resort where tourists from Great Britain, Germany, Italy like to stay and other countries. In this article you will find information on how to get to Los Cristianos from Tenerife South Airport , learn about the infrastructure of the beach and its features, hotels located next to it. You can get a more complete picture of the beach by looking at a photo and a short video.

Many people call the city of Los Cristianos quiet and sleepy. But it is not so. Indeed, this resort is much quieter than its noisy neighbor Las Americas, where they like to have fun all night long. And if in the morning or in the evening you decide to walk through the narrow streets of Los Cristianos, you will meet few people on them. The whole life of a small town is concentrated near the ocean. During the day you can spend time on the beach, and in the evening you can stroll along the picturesque promenade, have a snack and drink a glass of wine or sangria in numerous coastal bars and cafes, listen to street musicians play. The city has 2 beaches: Los Cristianos and Las Vistas. Let’s take a look at the first of them.

Part of the promenade opposite Los Cristianos Beach

Playa de Los Cristianos is one of the oldest beaches on the island. Not so long ago, it and the territory adjacent to it were reconstructed: fresh sand was added, a modern embankment was equipped. The peculiarity of the beach is its location. It adjoins the port with its southern part. There are pros and cons to this. The advantage is that once you are in Playa de Los Cristianos, you can look at fishing boats, ships and sightseeing ferries and have the opportunity to take a walk along the coast of Tenerife or to its neighboring islands. Another bonus of the beach is the calm water. There are no raging waves here, and you can safely swim to the buoys.

The northern part of Los Cristianos beach

But the same water and transport can be called the disadvantages of Playa de Los Crisnianos. Boats and ferries sometimes create noise when you want silence. Cutting through the ocean surface, transport makes the water muddy. Near the shore you can see floating algae. Some tourists complain that the water here sometimes gives off gasoline, although I didn’t feel anything like that while relaxing on this beach.

In all other respects, Playa de Los Crisnianos is not much different from other coastal areas. This is a beach convenient for relaxation, where a large number of people can relax, because the width of Los Cristianos is 80 m, and the length is more than 300 m. You can get here from the seaside boulevard, walking along the wooden decks to the center of the beach. On the territory of Playa de Los Crisnianos you can see towers with lifeguards and rent sun loungers and tents for the day. They cost 3 and 3 euros respectively. If you want to save money, you can spread a towel on the gray sand near the water. True, then it will have to be thoroughly shaken, because. the sand in Tenerife is very fine and sticky.

Los Cristianos beach in the evening

The entrance to the water is quite gentle, so they like to bring small children to the beach, who feel comfortable here. The bottom is smooth and soft. While swimming, you can admire the palm trees on the promenade, the ships in the port and the mountains that surround Los Cristianos. And in the evenings, enjoy the beautiful sunset right out of the water as the sun gilds the brown hills. In Los Cristianos, you can play volleyball on a special court, as well as rent a catamaran. When leaving the beach, do not forget to wash your feet under special showers that only work until 19hours.

Sunset over the port and beach of Los Cristianos

If you want to relax in Los Cristianos, you need to know how to get to this town. From Tenerife South Airport, there are several buses of the Titsa company (locally called guagua) that go to the resort. These are routes No. 111, 343, 450, 451, night bus 711. The fare on them for June 2018 costs 3.70. After 40 minutes, you will be dropped off at the stop on Avenida de Juan Carlos I. Follow it towards the ocean and soon you will see the port, and next to it is the beach of the same name. You can also get to Los Cristianos by car, by renting a car in Tenerife , or by taxi from Tenerife South Airport.

In the city you can stay in hostels, apartments and hotels. Hostel Tenerife and Dive Resort Ocean Dream will be the budget option. A bed in a 6-8-bed room will cost from 18 euros per night. These hostels have views of Los Cristianos Beach from their rooms or terraces. And to reach it from rented accommodation, you will not need more than 5 minutes.

View of the beach and the port of Los Cristianos from the terrace of the hostel Dive resort Ocean Dream

If you prefer apartments and hotels near the beach, you should pay attention to Bonamar, Cristianos Beach and Edificio Arco. You can relax with increased comfort in the rooms Saint George, Labranda reveron Plaza, The Suites at Beverly Hills. It is easy to check the cost of hotels in the Los Cristianos beach area in all booking systems at once and choose the best option for yourself using the Hotellook service (the search form is in the side column of the site).

The video will help you to better understand the surroundings of Los Cristianos beach and its territory. You can leave comments about visiting this place under the text.

Tenerife’s seven wonderful beaches.

Spain in Russian

Tenerife is perceived as a wonderful island, where life is easy and simple. If you know where the best beaches are, then this is true. The weather on the island varies, but the beaches are consistently good all year round.

It is pleasant to note that all the beaches of Tenerife are municipal, on any of them you can sunbathe and swim whenever you like. The only known private beach belongs to the five-star Abama Hotel, but both the hotel (and it is very extensive) and the small bay with the beach are free to enter. Beautiful chamber weddings and other ceremonies take place there, which you can “peep” from the observation deck. There are no closed beaches in Tenerife.

Lifeguards are on duty at major beaches. Many beaches in Tenerife have a quality mark indicating their safety and environmental friendliness, which is true. A fee is sometimes charged for the use of the shower and goes towards the salaries of the housekeeping staff who maintain the cleanliness. Sun loungers are almost always paid, of different quality, it is not necessary to use them at all.

Ocean waves washing the beaches of Tenerife vary in intensity depending on the weather and wind. Only certain places are suitable for surfing, we will talk about this below, and all beaches are good for swimming from April to October. Please note that the water in the ocean does not warm up above +25 degrees even on the hottest days. The Atlantic Ocean is always cool and “agitated”, breakwaters only slightly smooth out the waves, so it is not recommended to swim far. There are no poisonous jellyfish off the coast, but sea urchins come across, which are very unpleasant to step on, be careful. The waves here are bigger and longer than in the Mediterranean Sea, for example.

“Spain in Russian” has compiled a unique guide to the top 7 beaches of Tenerife and invites you to familiarize yourself with each of them. Beaches such as Las Teresitas in the capital of the island of Santa Cruz, the beaches of Las Americas and other major resorts can be easily found. Our ranking is as follows.

About the beach in Los Gigantes (Los Gigantes) you will read in the article “Mask Gorge and Los Gigantes – amazing excursions in Tenerife”. Passing the Mask is certainly a daring feat. You can come here and just sunbathe, and we guarantee that you will want to come back again and again. Los Gigantes is the sweetest town, not overloaded with tourists and advertising. It is located on a slope, so at the entrance to the city and on a smooth descent along the streets to the beach, you will see the famous giant rocks from afar, and you will swim at their very foot. The beach is small but very beautiful! The waves are quite strong, the depth is great.

After swimming, you will want to endlessly admire the bay, the horizon of which stretches into the distance. In Los Gigantes you will sunbathe on the natural and typical black sand of volcanic origin. It is very hot, you need to step carefully, but after sunset you can still bask on the sand for a long time, slowly cooling down after a hot day. On the way back, be sure to try a refreshing cocktail in one of the cafes right on the beach. All local cafes are very cozy and located exactly a stone’s throw from the shore.

Playa del Duque is one of the most famous beaches in Tenerife. The first thing that attracts here is its location in a prestigious and prosperous area. Respectable and elderly people usually rest here, there are almost no noisy young people, peace and tranquility reign. Gentle nature protects the peace of vacationers, and the ocean waves here are quiet and gentle. If you are traveling with young children, then Del Duque is the place for you to enjoy. The beach is quite wide and long, there is enough space for everyone. This part of the island is a tasty morsel for property owners, so the beach here is artificial, “tourist”, but very beautiful. You will see fine velvety light brown sand brought from Africa.

Playa Puertito is another cool place, unique in its own way. Puertito is a small town in the south of the island with an adjacent beach, also small, only a few hundred meters. Convenient parking adjoins it, yachts and boats swim into the bay, on which people rest. The bay is surrounded by rocks, so the waves here are very calm, and from the rocks you can freely dive into the clear water, there are also special iron stairs that go into the water, like in a pool. But the main charm of the place is that it is in this bay that sea turtles live, already accustomed to divers. There are no instructors or equipment rentals as this is an unofficial diving site, but you can buy a mask and snorkel at any store and it will be enough for swimming.

Las Arenas Beach can be described as a “postcard-looking” beach. In fact, this is one of the best beaches in Costa Adeje, which is chosen for recreation by both tourists and Canarians. This is a very picturesque place with sprawling palm trees, black stones and sand. Black volcanic sand is considered beneficial to health. Radiculitis, arthritis, osteochondrosis, back sprains, fractures are treated with natural heat and minerals of black volcanic sand. Be careful – during the day, the sand easily burns your feet in any season, except, perhaps, the winter months. The water here is relatively warm and calm, the place is almost idyllic. Nearby there is parking, many restaurants with fresh seafood and other pleasures.

Callao Salvaje is another small town in the south of the island, as well as a rare beach for Tenerife with almost no tourists. There is little sand here, mainly medium-sized pebbles and smooth black stones of volcanic origin. In this bay there is a pier from which you can dive, the waves are quite strong, the water can be muddy. It is good to direct your feet here on a hot day, the beach will certainly be free. The beach has parking, several cafes and one restaurant.

El Medano Beach is located near Tenerife South Airport. Natural orange-yellow sand for one and a half kilometers is a very rare phenomenon for Tenerife. According to legend, strong winds, grain by grain of sand, brought it here from the African continent over many centuries. El Medano is a very famous place, the incessant trade winds and long coastline allow for surfing and kite surfing all year round. All the necessary equipment is sold and rented near the beach, and finding an instructor is not difficult.

The so-called Hippie Beach completes our top list of Tenerife beaches. You can get here by following the sign La Caleta (not to be confused with Las Galetas). The beach is surrounded by small rocks, there is yellow sand and the purest calm water. There are tents on the beach all year round, and people sunbathe naked. There are many natural caves and depressions in the rock on the island, which were mastered by hippies back in the 1970s. It just so happened that a small part of the island’s population is always made up of people who deny the benefits of civilization, the media and social networks. This beach is more of a legend and a landmark, but you can visit the hippies at any time.
