An aviation legend, a star of world cinema, a holder of many world records, a carrier of the first persons of states and just a beautiful aircraft – all this is about the Boeing 747, whose century is coming to an end

This week the last produced Boeing was delivered to the Atlas Air cargo airline 747. The car, which gained worldwide fame and became one of the most recognizable in the world, was produced for more than half a century! The 747 has earned a reputation as a tough and reliable aircraft and has become one of the most popular wide-body aircraft. How did his story unfold?

Need more passengers!

It all started with a request from the Pan-Am air carrier, which in the 60s of the last century actively used Boeing’s first jet airliner, the four-engine 707. In those days, flying was the privilege of rich people, so there was only one way to reduce ticket prices – increase the number of passengers. This is exactly what Pan-Am put forward to Boeing.

Visual size comparison of two Boeing 707s and 747sSource: Boeing

The project was quite ambitious – the carriers wanted to increase the capacity of the liner by 2.5 times, which would allow them to reduce ticket prices by a third. The “father” of the 747 was the American Boeing engineer Joe Sutter, who led the development team of the future legend of the aviation industry.

The Boeing 747 made its first flight on February 9, 1969Source: Legion-Media

In those days, aircraft were built according to the classical scheme with one passage between two rows of seats. And it was the Boeing 747 that became the first wide-body airplane with a cabin where there were already two aisles – this arrangement is still used to this day. But this was not enough, so Boeing decided to take a very bold step and made the 747 … double-deck!

The first versions of the Boeing 747-100 could accommodate up to 366 passengers, depending on the layout. As a rule, the first class cabin was located at the top. The public debut of the Boeing 747 took place in 1969 at an air show at the Paris Le Bourget airport – and the 747 made a splash! Because of its gigantic size, the car was immediately dubbed “Jumbo Jet” in honor of the famous elephant Jumbo. Before the advent of the Airbus A380 in 2005, it was the Boeing 747 that was the largest passenger airliner in the world.

There would be no happiness

Boeing’s ambitions were so serious that the company’s management signed the first order for only 25 aircraft, despite the unprecedented complexity of this project and huge investments for its implementation – it quickly became clear that the aircraft was too heavy, and it required a titanic effort from engineers to lighten it in order to match the traction characteristics of four Pratt & Whitney engines.

Subsequently, the order was expanded to hundreds of copies, but it was believed that the start of operation of the Concorde and Tu-144 supersonic aircraft in the 70s would put an end to the giants of aviation. It turned out, however, exactly the opposite. Flights on the Superpersonics proved to be too expensive: they required huge amounts of fuel, frequent qualified service and pilots of the best level of training. And not the most outstanding reliability and several accidents completely put an end to supersonic passenger transportation.

The Boeing 747SP, shortened by 14 meters, was designed for longer routes, but did not find much demand due to its small capacity. A total of 45 copies were released out of 200 planned. Source: U.S. The NARA

Boeing 747, on the other hand, flourished and reveled in the near absence of competition for years. The liner was constantly improved – new Rolls-Royce and General Electric engines appeared, cargo modifications, a funny “short” 747SP and more spacious options 747-300, 747-400 and 747-8, designed for more than 400 passengers (they are easily identified by a longer fuselage hump). Modern avionics and control systems have reduced the flight crew to 2 people.

The Boeing 747 also holds world records – and it’s not just about capacity and size. In 1989, an Australian Qantas 747 covered the 18,001 km distance from London to Sydney in 20 hours and 9 minutes, making it the longest non-stop flight. In 1991, a Boeing 747 carried 1,122 people during Operation Solomon to evacuate Ethiopian Jews to Israel. For its many achievements and outstanding capabilities, the Boeing 747 has earned the title of “Queen of Heaven”.

And another unexpected Boeing 747 record was set thanks to… the weather – Hurricane Kiara on the way from New York to London helped the British Airways airliner reach a speed of 1327 km / h, as a result, it landed at Heathrow Airport almost 2 hours earlier schedules! However, the liner could not overcome the sound barrier, because it was in the air stream.

Not without the exclusive

Successful and reliable design, as well as high payload made the Boeing 747 an excellent blank for a variety of projects. The most “pompous” of them is, of course, the plane of the US President, “illuminated” in many films. The Boeing VC-25 is a deeply modified 747-200 equipped with special communications and protection, a conference room, a stateroom for the president and first lady. A new Air Force One aircraft based on the latest version of the Boeing 747-8 is being developed.

Aviation enthusiasts will surely remember the photos of the giant An-225 with the Buran space shuttle attached to the fuselage. So, in the USA there was also a similar carrier based on the Boeing 747, which differed from its progenitor in special mounts for the Space Shuttle and a modified tail unit. And the “pot-bellied” Boeing Dreamlifter was created to transport large parts of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

The list continues with the “doomsday aircraft” Boeing E-4 (a flying command post in case of a nuclear strike), a stratospheric infrared astronomy observatory with a telescope installed on board a Boeing 747, and even an experimental Boeing YAL-1 combat aircraft with . .. a powerful laser that , as conceived by the creators, could shoot down various flying objects.

Black spots in history

High reliability has given the 747 a good reputation among airlines and passengers – among the many accidents, only a few serious accidents can be identified. Alas, the large capacity of the aircraft in these cases also led to massive human casualties – this was mainly due to terrorist attacks and explosions on board.

However, the largest air crash in terms of the number of dead happened not at all through the fault of the aircraft – moreover, it happened on … the ground. 27 March 19For 77 years, due to a terrorist attack on the largest airport of the Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, all flights of wide-body ships were directed to Los Rodeos on the island of Tenerife. As a result, it was overloaded, because on Sunday the passenger flow was very high.

Source: Legion-Media

The sharply deteriorating weather also brought confusion, which reduced visibility to literally hundreds of meters. Rigid labor laws required pilots to take off before the end of the working day, and the growing nervous tension led to skirmishes with the air traffic control service. The result turned out to be deplorable – two Boeing 747s of KLM and Pan Am airlines were sent … towards each other. The collision at full speed claimed the lives of 583 people – all who were inside the planes.

In 1983, a Korean Air Lines Boeing 747 veered off course, twice intruded into Soviet airspace, and was shot down by a Soviet fighter after failing to respond to requests to change direction. In 1996, a Boeing 747 crashed shortly after takeoff in New York City due to a fuel tank explosion. And the last two catastrophes that claimed human lives happened to cargo Boeings in Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan. The first happened in 2013 due to a cargo placement violation (you can easily find a creepy video on the Web), and the second happened in 2017 due to a crew error during the landing approach.

Why was the Boeing 747 discontinued and what’s next for the Sky Queen?

The fate of the 747 was decided by carbon emissions quotas that airlines have to pay for, poor fuel efficiency and, consequently, an increase in operating costs, which invariably affects ticket prices.

Which of the world’s island escapes is right for you?

Some travellers dream of eating a zingy salad and chargrilled lobster on an empty beach in an African archipelago. Others crave the promise of primordial adventures and the anticipation of jumping down the face of a vertiginous waterfall in a tropical jungle. Many dream of indulging in time for themselves, to take yoga classes overlooking an electric blue sea or chant with monks in a spiritual setting. Whether you’re looking for an island that has carved a reputation for being a foodie destination or an enchantingly different, lesser-known haven where you can soak up the seascape, much of the world has now reopened for travel and that dream destination is back in reach.

Dominica’s dramatic cliffs are abutted by deep forests and secluded coastal coves.

1. Dominica, Caribbean

Best for adventurous travellers

If the views of jagged peaks from luxury resort Secret Bay’s magical treehouses send your pulse racing, wait until you try the activities on Dominica, home to nine volcanoes, dense rainforest and 350 rivers and waterfalls. Scramble, abseil and climb steep rock faces surrounding some of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls, plunging feet first into pristine pools in the heart of the tropical forest on a canyoning expedition. Or saddle up for a canter along the coastline watching the ocean for whales or dolphins. Night snorkelling and scuba diving are on offer too, as well as sedate hiking trails that lead to hidden beaches and hot springs or the chance to go standup paddleboarding along the resort’s river surrounded by native birds and wildlife. And if you’ve worked up an appetite, join a foraging and cooking class with a local chef to learn how to cook sustainable, freshly caught seafood.

How to do it: Seven nights B&B including flights from £3,586 per person.

Or try… The Azores

This far-flung archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic is made for adventure. São Miguel is the largest, and now easily accessible via direct flights with low-cost airlines and, more recently, British Airways. Its landscape looks like it hasn’t changed in millennia and the surrounding waters teem with life. Take a sea safari to spot whales and dolphins, surf the waves or explore the dramatic interior by mountain biking, trekking or kayaking. Adrenaline sports such as paragliding and canyoning can be organised independently or by Furnas Boutique Hotel, which is built on and around naturally occurring thermal waters.

How to do it: Two nights, based on two sharing, from €220 (£185).

2. Galápagos, Ecuador

Best for wildlife-watchers

Follow in the footsteps of Darwin and explore this biodiverse volcanic archipelago where blue-footed boobies nest on the ground, flightless cormorants hop from rock to rock, penguins play and marine iguanas soak up the sun. While most tours take in a variety of islands, the largest, Isabela, is home to one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. It’s not every day you’re able to wander around the slopes of the world’s second biggest active volcanic crater. Punta Vicente Roca on the west coast is the place to scuba and snorkel among turtles, sea horses, frog fishes and the elusive ocean sunfish, which can grow to weigh more than 2,000kg. For some of the best views, stay at the safari-style Scalesia Lodge on the slopes of a volcano overlooking a forest and coastline.

How to do it: Wexas Travel features three nights’ full board at Scalesia as part of an island-hopping tour with prices from £5,735 per person including return flights, excursions/cruising, three nights’ full board at the Finch Bay Galapagos hotel and three nights’ B&B accommodation in Quito.

Or try… Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

Not far from Tortola, the 850-acre forest-clad Guana Island is an unpretentious paradise, crisscrossed by hiking trails that reveal native wildlife including flamingos, tortoises, turtles and giant iguanas at every turn. Accessible only by boat or helicopter, the private island has 15 charming cottages, which means only 30 guests on its seven secluded beaches at any one time. It’s the perfect destination for those seeking solitude among an almost completely untouched wilderness.

How to do it: Seven nights from £3,299 per person, all-inclusive, with flights and transfers.

Enjoying a wellness treatment on the island of Koh Samui.

Photograph by Kamalaya Koh Samui

3. Koh Samui, Thailand

Best for spa seekers

A firm favourite among travellers looking for a sublime spa retreat with warm weather and idyllic beaches, Thailand has a reputation for delivering wellness programmes that combine pampering treatments with meditation and holistic health, as well as wholesome food. Nestled in a valley with views overlooking the southern coast of Koh Samui, adults-only Kamalaya is considered one of the best. The brainchild of a Canadian who spent over a decade living in the Himalayas under the tutelage of a yogi master, there’s a real sense of spirituality and calming energy with result-driven programmes combining naturopaths, traditional Chinese medicine doctors, yoga teachers, fitness trainers, massage therapists and mentors. In between treatments, guests can attend lectures and workshops, or simply relax in the grounds of the resort overflowing with lush, tropical foliage, cascading streams and an idyllic beach.

How to do it: Seven nights’ full board including a Destress Asian Bliss programme but excluding flights from £3,115 per person.

Or try… Sumba, Indonesia

Just an hour from Bali, Nihi Sumba has long been popular with surfers and those seeking barefoot luxury and it now has a growing reputation as a wellbeing destination. Offbeat spa experiences include a spa safari — a 90-minute sunrise trek over rolling hills, through rice fields and a traditional Sumbanese village to meet a therapist in a private cliffside bale by the sea for a treatment. While yoga classes predominantly take place on an outdoor pavilion, there’s also the option to try it on a horse to help calm anxiety and stress. Alternatively, guests can simply watch the animals — every morning, they’re released from their stables to gallop freely along the beach and swim in the sea.

How to do it: From £900 per person per night. £100 for the spa safari.

4. Soneva Fushi, Maldives

Best for foodies

A handful of restaurants serve up the very best of international, Asian, plant-based and seafood specialities at this luxury resort in the Baa Atoll, but those looking for the ultimate gourmet getaway should time their visit to coincide with the rotating programme of visiting Michelin star chefs. This year, the star-studded line-up includes Chapter One’s Mickael Viljanen (1-15 July), Kong Hans Kælder’s head chef Mark Lundgaard (15-30 July), Northcote’s Lisa Goodwin-Allen (19-28 October), and Chantelle Nicholson (25 October to 10 November). But it’s not just the food that’s impressive, but where it’s served. Each restaurant has a fabulous setting with Flying Sauces taking it up a notch or two. Here, diners glide along a 655ft zip-line through the leafy jungle to reach a treetop table and open kitchen set 40ft above the ground with exceptional views over the sparkling ocean. Take the leap for breakfast, high tea or dinner for an elevated dining experience like no other.

How to do it: Prices from £4,449 per person based on two sharing a villa with pool for five nights including return flights from Heathrow and seaplane transfers.

Or try… Majorca

For those who believe good food to be a key ingredient of a memorable holiday, then Majorca — with 10 Michelin star restaurants — is an island worth visiting. But you don’t have to stay in Palma to sample the incredible food of one of the island’s most acclaimed chefs — El Vicenc de la Mar opened this year in a beautiful bay on the north of the island at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains. Here, star chef Santi Taura, best known for his 12-course tasting menu at DINS at El Llorenç Parc de la Mar in Palma, has set up a new restaurant. Expect traditional Balearic cooking with modern flair using seasonal products and a cultural story to each dish.

How to do it: Rooms from €400 (£333) per night.

Dining in style on Mnemba Island.

Photograph by andbeyond.com

5. Seychelles

Best for beach bathers

Synonymous with sweeping powder beaches and dazzling cerulean seas, Seychelles is the place to dive, without crowds, amid graceful turtles; wander through a jungle blanketed by coconut groves; or to gaze into the knowing eye of a 200-year-old giant tortoise. The archipelago of 115 islands has prolific rare and endangered species of plants, lizards and birds as well as some stunning picture-postcard beaches. For one of the best, head to the tiny coral island Desroches, just a 35-minute flight from the main island of Mahé. With eight miles of soft, white sand beaches, every guest can get that elusive castaway fix, but for those craving more activity, there are plenty of leisure activities on offer, too, from world-class diving and fishing to exploring nearly 10 miles of cycling trails.

How to do it: Seven nights starts from £5,050 for a one-bedroom pool villa on a B&B basis with two nights free at its sister hotel on Mahé.

Or try… Mnemba, Zanzibar

Ringed with powder-white sand and immaculate coral reefs far from the crowds, Mnemba island is famed for its blue waters, palm trees and spectacular sunsets. This roughly triangular island is just 1,640ft by 0.9 miles in size — a mere blip in the ocean that’s home to andBeyond Mnemba Island. This is a glorious shipwreck fantasy with life’s little pleasures conveniently at hand with a restaurant and just 12 rustic chic beachside bandas tucked into the tropical forest a few steps from the ocean. It’s a place to relax or explore the sea, a marine conservation area and important breeding ground for the endangered green turtle. Dive, snorkel and swim among hundreds of species of fish, dolphin and stingray and even humpback whales between August and November. Or just sit with your feet in the sand and watch the sun rise.

How to do it: Prices from $1,320 (£1,000) per person per night, on an all-inclusive basis, based on two sharing.

Paragliding Miracle

On 14 February 2007, in spite of weather reports heralding the presence of violent thunderstorms, Wiśnierska decided to try to fly in order to train for the 2007 paragliding world championship near Manilla, New South Wales, Australia. She got trapped in the updraft of two joining thunderstorms. Unable to get out, she was lifted to an altitude of 9,946 metres (32,631 ft), according to her GPS. The GPS variometer also tracked vertical speeds of up to +20 m/s (77 kilometres per hour (48 mph)). She landed 3.5 hours later about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of her starting position.

In the same weather event, the Chinese paraglider He Zhongpin was killed by a lightning strike.

Red Bull X-Alps 2019: Full Documentary

As snow settles across the Alps it seems crazy to think back to just six months ago when 32 of the world’s top adventure athletes set off from Salzburg to race to Monaco.

Athletes have been quick to move on with their lives, back to the day jobs as teachers, engineers, guides, instructors and full-time adventurers now skiing and flying. But for many of us, fans and athletes included, the memories are still fresh – the pain, the glory, the exhaustion and elation.

With this documentary on the race, we take a look back to remind ourselves of some of the golden moments and unique trends from the 2019 edition.

The race may be six months ago, the pain may be long since forgotten. But as the saying goes, the glory lives on.

Relive the World’s Toughest Adventure Race | Red Bull X-Alps 2017

In July 2017, 31 world-class athletes from 20 different nations embarked on a grueling hike and fly adventure across the Alps. Filming the race was an 18-man camera crew, equipped with the latest technology and a helicopter. Just in time for the holidays, we’ve put together a 52-minute documentary showcasing the most epic moments of this year’s edition.

Jam-packed with incredible paragliding and almost impossible feats of Alpine adventure. Narrated by race reporter Tarquin Cooper, the documentary features veteran pilots such as reigning champion Chrigel Maurer (SUI1), Paul Guschlbauer (AUT1) and Romanian running man Toma Coconea (ROU), as well as rookies like Benoît Outters (FRA4) and Simon Oberrauner (AUT4).

Red Bull X-Alps 2015: The Documentary

Red Bull X-Alps 2015 saw fierce competition, tough weather conditions and athletes pushing themselves to the limit to make it to the cool waters of Monaco. Relive the race with ‘The Documentary’.

Best Moments from Red Bull X-Alps 2013

Monaco welcomed its tenth and final athlete, just hours before the Red Bull X-Alps came to an end at 12:00pm local time. It is perhaps fitting that on the ten-year anniversary of the first Red Bull X-Alps, it should be Toma Coconea (ROM) to arrive in 10th place as he has competed in every edition of the race since 2003.

X-Alps Ends with a Bang – Event Recap – Red Bull X-Alps 2011

It was a spectacular end to the world’s toughest adventure race today with a close duel between two athletes sparring for second place.

The Red Bull X-Alps finishes 48 hours after the winner arrives in Monaco. Christian Maurer clinched victory at 16:22 on Thursday, and at that time, his nearest followers were over 150 km away.

However, by last night, Toma Coconea and Paul Guschlbauer were lying neck-and neck, around 65 km out from Monaco. They had both flown spectacular flights at heights of up to 3500 m through the southern Alps putting them within range of goal.

As dawn broke, Coconea set off. He ran fast through the twisting valleys that lead to Monaco, sometimes averaging 10 km/h and living up to his nickname, ‘the raging Romanian.’

Meanwhile, Guschlbauer took his time. He knew good flying conditions were forecast, and elected to hike to the same launch place above Isola that Maurer had used two days ago.

Best climate in Europe – Stop waiting for spring and summer

Enjoy the sunshine on Costa del Sol

It is well-known that Costa del Sol has the best climate in Europe. At Quartiers we are having the best winter weather ever.

There is no need to fly to the Canary Islands, or more far-away destinations, to get a well-needed dose of sunshine in winter. Rent a premium holiday apartment at Quartiers Marbella. Experience a sunny break and luxury comfort that no hotel can offer.

Holiday Rentals in the Sunshine of Costa del Sol – Quartiers Marbella Apartments

In November 2019 we had an average day temperature of 19.5 degrees Celsius in the area. The average night temperature in Marbella was 19.0 degrees C. Amazing!

Even in winter, there are very few rainy days at Costa del Sol. The nice weather and pleasant temperatures explain why Malaga is Europes top golf destination. Where else can you enjoy springtime in the middle of the winter?

December is a busy month in Marbella, San Pedro, Benahavis and Estepona. While shops and businesses are trying to create that special Christmas feeling, tourists and visitors are enjoying the sunshine relaxing on the terraces and eating on the restaurants in front of the sea.

January and February are probably the months that fewer travellers arrive at Costa del Sol. Many people do not know that winter weather in southern Spain is perfect for all kind of outdoor sports and sightseeing. Also, being considered “low season”, these months are a great occasion to find cheap flights and discounted accommodation.

Now, in February, the days in southern Spain are already getting longer, and warmer. The sun rises a few minutes after 08.00 AM and shines until 07.00 PM. It gets brighter every day. The average daily temperature in March is expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius. We will have 11-13 hours of daylight every day.

Being honest, we have to confess that the Mediterranean’s waters along the coast in Marbella still are a little bit cold for bathing and swimming in February and March, but that will not last for long. Spring and summer are arriving at Costa del Sol. And, if you want to go for a swim, one of our four outdoor swimming pools is heated to 28 degrees Celsius, and always ready to offer lazy days and relax in the sunshine.

The beach season on Costa del Sol and Marbella starts just before Easter. Spring and early summer are already in the air.

Don’t hesitate. Book a stay at Quartiers Marbella Apartments. Enjoy the sunshine and being outdoors, while winter still is far from its end everywhere else in Europe.

Close your eyes and picture yourself walking around in our tropical gardens. Reading a book in the sunshine by the swimming pool, or playing golf under a clear blue sky. Imagine waking up and having breakfast on the terrace, while overlooking breath-taking views of the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar and the coast of Morocco.

Life’s good in the sunshine. Life is better at QUARTIERS MARBELLA

Stay in one of our amazing apartments

INTERVIEW Climate change: time to adapt is running out |

AS: It has been 8-9 years since the previous reports were published. What are the main problems related to climate change that you can single out today?

SS: Risks to natural and economic systems remained about the same, but they began to increase at lower temperatures. It used to be thought that if the average global surface temperature rises to two degrees relative to the pre-industrial period, then dangerous changes occur. This report notes that risks and threats begin to emerge at lower temperatures – one and a half degrees and even earlier. nine0005

This global temperature increase is already included in the Paris Agreement. But since the previous report was completed in 2014 and the agreement was signed in 2015, there was very little discussion of these global goals in that report. Now they have been considered very carefully.

The authors of the report also analyzed the impact of global warming on many objects in the whole world and in its different regions: in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Australasia (Australia, New Zealand and Tasmania), in Antarctica and the Arctic, and so on. Further. Small islands are singled out because they are considered to be very sensitive to global warming and especially to sea level rise. And in each of these regions, changes were found for a variety of objects of influence. nine0005

If we take, say, Russia, then we can say that there will be an excess of water resources in its northern part, and a deficit is planned in the European southern part

But, if we talk about changes in natural ecosystems (without human activities – editor’s note), then it is not entirely correct to say whether they are positive or negative, since there is no land use there. Whereas for economic, anthropogenic systems, we can separate what is good and bad. If you look at the global analysis, in most cases this impact, from the human point of view, will be negative. But in some regions there are also positive effects of global warming – for example, on productivity and grain production. nine0005

When it comes to water resources, this report does not cover countries, but only regions. But, if we take, say, Russia, then we can say that there will be an excess of water resources in its northern part, and a deficit is planned in the European southern part.

The report also focuses on adaptation – that is, activities that reduce the exposure of systems to climate change and sensitivity. For example, if a city is partly on a river floodplain and is subject to flooding, which often happens in Europe and Asia, then building exposure is the percentage of buildings that are in the floodplain, and their vulnerability is what the buildings are made of: wood, from concrete, with piles, etc. Sensitivity is the impact at the moment when the event has already happened. nine0005

The fundamental conclusion is that if global warming increases, then the possibility of adaptation will decrease.

These are the main features of the report, if I can say in a nutshell about the content of a thousand-page document.

AC: You mentioned unpleasant and some relatively positive effects. Can you please highlight the most negative consequences? And tell us more about the positive effects of climate change.

SS: I will not undertake to single out the most negative consequences. Because each country believes that it has the most negative consequences. For example, small island states consider the frequency and intensification of cyclones, which on the one hand bring quite a lot of disasters, and on the other hand bring there water necessary for agriculture, as very serious consequences.

As for the positive consequences, for example, for Russia, the reduction of the ice cover in the Arctic and the increase in the duration of navigation along the Northern Sea Route opens up opportunities for commercial transportation of goods. This is good for the economy. It can also be said that there are more water resources somewhere and the grain yield per hectare is increasing in some areas. But in general, of course, the consequences are mostly negative. nine0005

There is a very common point of view, since Russia is a northern country and a cold country, then an increase in temperatures is for the better. This is not entirely correct. 66 percent of the territory of our country is under permafrost. And the foundation of technical structures and residential buildings is designed for the fact that the piles are in the permafrost. If it gets warmer, then the strength of these foundations will decrease. Therefore, new buildings will need new building codes and regulations, respectively, their cost will be more expensive. And existing buildings need to be strengthened, which also requires money. Therefore, warming is not always good for Russia. nine0005

Another typical example, which is typical not only for Russia. With global warming, a certain trend towards an increase in extreme weather events has been noted. For example, the so-called “heat waves”, that is, a long period of elevated temperatures. This leads, in particular, to fires in forests and peatlands. This is bad not only because forests are burning, but also because both carbon dioxide and methane are released into the atmosphere. That is, the amount of greenhouse gases is increasing. In addition, it is very bad for people’s health. This is typical not only for our country, but also, for example, for Australia and the USA. nine0005

AS: You said that Russia’s problems in terms of climate change are not unique. It turns out that the entire northern hemisphere, in particular, the northern countries, one way or another face similar consequences?

SS: Yes, there are similarities. This happens, for example, in Canada. Just like, say, all of the Pacific and Caribbean island nations are facing rising sea levels. It may seem that this is a small increase: we are talking about an average of several tens of centimeters. But these and larger boost levels can make a difference in storms, for example. nine0005

There are also uniquenesses. These are, for example, mangrove forests that grow from water. They are carbon sinks and are typical mainly for tropical countries. For Russia, this problem is not relevant, because we do not have such forests.

AS: How will climate change affect cities and metropolitan areas?

SS: First, metropolitan areas and cities are climatic “heat islands”. The temperature there is usually higher than in the surrounding rural areas. Why is it so? Because cities have a lot of asphalt and concrete, and there is relatively little greenery compared to the suburbs. Here the temperature is one or two degrees higher for physical reasons. In addition, there are problems with atmospheric circulation due to the fact that cities are poorly ventilated. These are, for example, Mexico City and Beijing. nine0005

View of Beijing, the capital of China

In addition, until relatively recently, cities were poorly adapted to heat waves. True, after the heat wave in Europe in 2003, many cities began to install air conditioners and develop special programs to better adapt to such changes.

Russia, within the framework of the UN Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, took certain commitments to reduce emissions, which it has 100 percent fulfilled

Together with global warming, the so-called vector-borne diseases, such as encephalitis or malaria, began to spread to the north of Eurasia, that is, they appear in regions where they did not exist before. This means that now the network of epidemiological stations must take measures in connection with the expansion of the areas of these diseases.

AS: You have already talked about climate change adaptation programs. What documents exist today on prevention or adaptation to climate change? nine0004

SS: There is such a well-known document as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It was signed in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro. There was the Kyoto Protocol was to this convention and the Paris Agreement.

The activity of this convention relates to the field of mitigation, that is, the reduction of anthropogenic impact on climate, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the reduction of landscape transformation that is associated with the emission of additional greenhouse gases and adaptation. Adaptation is something that does not reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Mitigation is not a reduction in emissions, but simply a reduction in the impact of warming. Engage in adaptation or mitigation, and in what proportion – the political choice of each country. nine0005

Russia, under the UN Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, took certain commitments to reduce emissions, which it has 100 percent fulfilled. Now, after signing the Paris Agreement, the country is developing an adaptation plan. Moreover, the first pilot part ends next year and the time for the second stage is coming. He’s getting ready.

Of course, adaptation still lags behind mitigation. But the Paris Agreement obliges to catch up. nine0005

On July 1, 2020, Germany took over the Presidency of the Council of the EU for six months. Coping with the coronavirus pandemic is the most urgent task. The presidency is held under the motto: “Make Europe strong again. Together”, which means that climate protection is one of the first items on the agenda. One of the most important projects is the European climate law. Without it, the “climate neutrality” goal set out in the Green Deal cannot be achieved by 2050. In addition, we have to raise the bar set in the EU for 2030 even higher. Germany supports the Commission’s proposal to increase the previous target (40 percent) to reduce greenhouse gases to 50 and even 55 percent. compared to 1990 year.

Goals of the Green Deal

The EU Green Deal sets out a number of far-reaching goals. Europe should become the first climate neutral continent by 2050. The project, presented by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after she took office in December 2019, is not just a master plan for the next few years. The project is supposed to use the next three decades to modernize Europe on the principles of sustainability and social responsibility. The Commission is responding to the growing risks posed to the EU economic system by climate change and species extinction. The commission also takes into account the results of the European elections in May 2019year, when a large number of citizens, as shown by the voting results, spoke in favor of strengthening measures to protect the climate and the environment.

Green Technology as an Opportunity

The Green Deal is a new growth strategy. The basic message is simple: Europe’s economic efficiency largely depends on the preservation of its natural foundations. We are talking about water, air, soil, as well as forests, oceans and a stable climate. Prevention is the best way to ensure future prosperity. Therefore, the Green Deal is based on green technologies and respect for nature. The aim is to decouple economic growth from resource use and create new jobs at the same time. The project’s numerous initiatives provide companies with the security planning they need and create the framework conditions for a more crisis-resilient EU. The same applies to the fight against the coronavirus crisis. nine0005

Video: The European Green Deal

Sustainability as a development concept for the European Union did not appear yesterday. But the Green Deal has more ambitious goals. It is supposed to accelerate the restructuring that has already begun and turn it into a comprehensive concept of the future. The plan takes into account all sectors of the economy and society – from industry, trade, transport and agriculture to biodiversity, natural heritage, the circular economy and structural change. Taxes and finance, as important levers for transformation processes, should also be transformed in accordance with green criteria.

Paloma Beach à Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat- ©Istock – Onnes

Playa de Muro, a fabulous beach in Mallorca

In the northeast of Mallorca, next to the tourist port of Alcudia, is the beach you’ve been dreaming of: Playa de Muro. This is the largest sandy beach on the island: six kilometers of clean, white sand, clear and shallow waters … and all this beauty is located on the territory of an impressive natural park. So, dive in to find out more about Playa de Muro, Mallorca’s dream beach!

Beach for all

Playa de Muro is divided into four parts. The first two are the closest to Alcudia beach, so they are very popular, surrounded by hotels, restaurants… and all the amenities you could want on a beach. With easy access and easy parking nearby, these two sites are ideal for families. In addition, the water is very shallow, so children can play in total safety. In fact, if you want to lose a leg, you have to walk a lot. Here you will find a wooden bridge perfect for beautiful photos. Walk across it and at the end you will be able to jump into deeper water. nine0003 © iStock / Balate Dorin

The third site, Es Como, is the most beautiful and most difficult to access. It is surrounded by sand dunes and pine trees. I recommend you walk among them to take in the scenery and then head straight to the beach for a swim. There are no restaurants on the beach or any other amenities that would disturb the view, so it’s worth walking away from the car park if you’re looking for a quieter spot.

The last site, Es Capellans, is close to Ca’n Picafort and is therefore again surrounded by hotels, restaurants. .. everything you need.

What to do

In Playa de Muro, you can practice any water sport that comes to your mind: kite surfing, parasailing or jet skiing. However, if you decide to leave the beach for the day, there are plenty of other options for you. For example, if you love nature, you should visit the beautiful S’Albufera Natural Park located right next to the beach. This park covers more than 1,500 hectares and is divided into four routes, each of which is very simple. Walk or bike through them to admire the magnificent scenery of Albufer: a vast expanse of flat sweet water, reeds and tons of different birds flying around: falcons, eagles, black vultures… up to 250 different species! nine0003 © iStock / KevinAlexanderGeorge

On the other hand, if you’re more into sightseeing, there’s a gem right next to you, the historic city of Alcudia. Wander its medieval streets and city wall, and sample local produce at the market every Tuesday and Sunday. And if you like Roman cities, beautiful Pollentia is just a kilometer away. There are two very curious things here: the smallest amphitheater in Spain and the tombs inside the theater tiers. nine0003

After reading all this, I think you will agree with me that if you ever find yourself in the Balearic Islands, you cannot miss Playa de Muro, fabulous beach in Mallorca!

I live between Salamanca in Spain and Marvão in Portugal. I love to travel and have visited over 30 countries on four continents. I am currently doing my PhD in Greek mythology, working with horses, and participating in horse riding tours. nine0003

Luxurious and multi-faceted Paris, spread out on the banks of the Seine River, is the capital of France and impresses everyone who has been here at least once with its grandeur. It has everything that travelers can dream of – a relaxed atmosphere, numerous historical sights, excellent shopping, fine French cuisine and entertainment for every taste.

Geographically, Paris, which occupies an honorable first place in the ranking of resorts in France, is divided into 20 districts of varying degrees of importance – some are interesting to walk along the streets and admire architectural monuments, others are quiet corners for a comfortable stay. Today it is one of the five most visited cities in the world. nine0003

Excursion tours to the capital of the country – a great opportunity to wander around the Latin Quarter, see the Eiffel Tower, which is a symbol of the city and France, visit the Louvre and admire the charming smile of Mona Lisa. Curious travelers will be able to see the pearl of Gothic architecture – Notre Dame de Paris, known as Notre Dame Cathedral, or visit the bohemian Montmartre and drink delicious coffee in a small restaurant where Van Gogh and Picasso once visited. nine0003

Ile-de-France

The Parisian region of Ile-de-France is a historical region in the heart of France, embracing the charming Paris and surrounding areas with magnificent palaces, romantic and luxurious parks, residences of French kings, and Gothic basilicas and abbeys. Many architectural monuments erected on both banks of the majestic Seine and located in the region are included in the list of UNESCO cultural heritage sites. nine0003

These include the magnificent palace and park complex of Versailles and the Benedictine abbey in Saint-Denis with the tomb of the kings, located in the northern suburbs of the capital, the luxurious royal residence in Fontainebleau and the medieval city of Provins. In the vicinity of the capital is also located the famous palace of Vaux-le-Vicomte, built during the reign of King Louis XIV.

Choosing the Paris region in the description of the resorts, travelers will be able to get acquainted with the specialties of the famous French cuisine in numerous Michelin-starred restaurants, as well as visit the largest amusement park – Disneyland Paris in the town of Marne-de-Vallee and no less famous entertainment center – the park “Asterix” in the town of Playa. nine0003

Rhone-Alpes

Rhone-Alpes, the second largest province in the east of the country, has a common border with Italy and Switzerland. It is named after the natural attractions of France – the full-flowing Rhone River and the highest Alps in Europe, and has a rich historical past. In the capital of the region, Lyon, a large number of ancient architectural monuments included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list have been preserved. Discerning travelers are pleasantly surprised by luxurious hotels, excellent cuisine, and excellent infrastructure of the region. nine0003

The success of the province lies in the stunning beauty of the Alps with the majestic Mont Blanc peak, a large number of lakes, on the banks of which there are hot springs and bases for a comfortable pastime. Travelers are attracted by the natural park Vercors, which includes four mountains, from which a magnificent panorama of alpine meadows, surrounding plains and gorges opens. The Rhone-Alpes region is home to several popular ski resorts, including Courchevel, beloved by Russians.

South of France

The French south has a special charm. The resort towns of France, located in the southern regions, are characterized by a measured pace of life. Magnificent Mediterranean beaches with amazing azure blue water, majestic mountains and picturesque plains attract travelers from all over the world. The rich historical past is evidenced by the ruins of ancient Greek and Roman cities, medieval castles and fortresses, stone houses with traditional red tiled roofs in small villages and cities. nine0003

The south of France is worth a visit to discover the secrets of winemaking in Bordeaux, visit the walled city of Carcassonne, which hosts historical festivals and shows, or see the preserved monuments of the Renaissance architecture in Toulouse. Especially discerning travelers can comfortably relax in the fashionable resort of Biarritz, admiring the views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Provence

Provence is considered the most romantic region in the southeastern part of the country. Its picturesque nature is immortalized in the paintings of Cezanne and Van Gogh. Endless fields of lavender resemble fantastic alien landscapes. There are “lavender trails” that pass by fields that emit an unusual intoxicating aroma during the flowering of lavender and provide complete relaxation. nine0003

But the region is also famous for the fact that it combines the popular resorts of France – Nice, Cannes, Saint-Tropez, located on the Cote d’Azur, with part of the Languedoc and the snow-white peaks of the Alps. The noisy Croisette with sea piers and luxury yachts is linked into one whole with small calm villages and ancient Christian churches, the scorching heat of the sunny beaches of the French Riviera – with the piercing winds of the Alps. Provence offers travelers all the best – warm gentle sea, lush nature, luxurious boutiques, delicious food and fine wines. nine0003

National visas

Third-country nationals require a national visa when they are going to stay in Spain for more than 90 days (in any 180-day period) for the purposes of work, study or establishing their residence. They also need a national visa when moving to Spain to work for a period of under 90 days.

Citizens of the European Union or of the States of the European Economic Area or Switzerland do not need a visa to establish their residence in Spain or for long-term studies or to work. However, once in Spain, they must be entered on the Register for Citizens of the Union. Family members accompanying them, and who benefit from the right to free movement, must apply for a residence permit in Spain. If they need a stay visa because of their nationality, they must obtain a visa for family members of a citizen of the Union (see section “Visas for family members of a citizen of the Union”).

The national visa allows the holder to travel to Spain and to transit through and move around the territory of any Schengen State for a maximum of 90 days. However, it does not automatically entitle them to enter the Schengen area. The border authorities can refuse entry if not all entry requirements are met (See section “Conditions for entry into Spain”).

[Procedure]

1. Collect the required documents for a Spanish visa application.

As a part of your Spanish visa application, you should submit some mandatory required documents to support your case (Choose a visa)

We recommend you to schedule your appointment at your earliest convenience once you decide to visit our Embassy. It is essencial to confirm your attendance in advance of the appointment to avoid no-show. You will receive an email to confirm your attendance at the appointment in advance of 3 days. You will have 2 days to confirm your attendance from the moment youreceive the email. If you do not confirm your attendance before 2 days, the appointment, automatically, will be cancelled and you have to reschedule it. Appointments made less than the confirmation time will be automatically confirmed. Please arrive at least 5 minutes earlier before your appointment. After the time of your appointment, we will not be able to attend you, in which case you will have to make another appointment for another day.

The legal period for reaching a decision is of 15 working days as of the day after the application submission date, but this period may be extended if an interview or additional documents are requested.

The visa/passport/refusal certificate must be collected in person by the applicant or by their representative (if the applicant is a minor) within a maximun period of 1 months, counted as the day after the date on which the RESUELTO is notified. You may pick up your visa/ passport/ refusal certificate by APPOINTMENT or you may come to the Embassy, without an appointment on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 12.00p.m. to 12.50p.m.. Please bring the proof of receipt of the application provided by the Consular Office.
